oh also, I brought this up because I was randomly thinking about how foals in MLP have such stubby legs, and I was like “wait, real foals have such knobby long legs, that’s unrealistic” until I remembered that 1. mlp ponies are drawn simplified beyond belief, and 2. real life ponies have foals that are just THAT stubby-legged.

this also makes me kinda sad because it's like the devs really are about to abandon the og game... almost all the content can be found in nightbringer aside from the old events and cards

It doesn't quite sit well with me when parts of the fandom act as though they don't understand why, exactly, people become so hyper-defensive/are so hyper-sensitive when people bring up Mel being manipulative. It's because this trait has been weaponized to demean and disparage her at the expense of acknowledging any other nuance/facet about her character, and this also often goes hand-in-hand with ignoring the faults of other characters as to emphasize hers. The fact that Mel is a Black woman can not be put aside as a definitive factor as to why and how she's perceived the way she is—by both the fandom and the writers of the show. I would even argue that one of the show's original sins is a lack of understanding of the real-world intersections between race, class, and colonialism.

In regards to both Mel and Ambessa, this lack of understanding is evident in the writing. Writing that ignores the real-world implications of the Medardas and their social position relative to whiteness, which is one informed by socioeconomic and sociocultural disparities as a result of racism and misogyny. Yes, I understand it's a high fantasy show where things like racism don't exist, so to speak, but Arcane, like all media, is informed by the state of affairs of the world we live in. With classism—classism, which Black people are disproportionately victims of—being a core theme of the show (ostensibly), it's disingenuous to disregard the, from a Doylist perspective, haphazard nature of Mel's function in the narrative as a wealthy Black woman in a classist society juxtaposed against poor, oppressed white main characters (this also applies to Ambessa as a warmonger).

With that said, and harkening back to the beginning of this post, even if you're not bringing attention to Mel's flaws and complexities to demonize her, you have to acknowledge them in the context of her as a Black female character being written with little understanding of intersectionality and how they've been weaponized against her, which are the reasons people—specifically Black woman fans such as myself—are compelled to defend her (or even pretend these flaws don't exist. After all, it's never been a problem in fandom when non-black and male characters' flaws are erased/diminished. It can't suddenly become one now). It's easy to say Mel is a multi-faceted, three-dimensional character, thus, that's why downplaying her flaws is a disservice to her charcter, and this isn't an unreasonable point. However, it's harder to admit that the reason people point out these flaws is not always in the service of acknowledging her complexities but instead in the service of demonizing her due to internalized/unknown biases against Black women. In the end, no one has to like a character. No one even has to defend a character they don't like on principle. No one has to not be annoyed at the sanitization of a multidimensional character. But if those things are being done without an acknowledgement of how the perception of that character is mired by racism and misogyny—knowing or unknowing, from the writers on down—then maybe it's time to address some oversights or unpack some internalized biases before wondering why people feel the need to defend that character.

ok this is a super quick moment, basically just in a flash of the trailer, but i can't help but kinda lose it how even in this short second, wille still looks at simon with so much awe no matter what has happened between them up until this point

he's still so surprised by simon being soft with him and i just love that even after all this time he still looks at simon in the same way as when he first saw him

Man I just love ClownPierce. Like when he gets into bad pvp situations and close to death he goes silent or deafens, and because of everything that he's built up over his whole career he instantly gives off the aura of pissed, scary, murderous, livid, effortless in his escaping or destruction.

But occasionally, on someone else's stream or content, you hear what really goes on in his mind and it's always terror and ultimate focus so deep that listening and responding to someone else is impossible and incredibly stressful for him to do.

But he cleanly covers that all up by being silent and then getting perfect revenge later.

like i love how you get all that without breaking the narrative? like you have to intuit his fear from consuming lots of content. it's not like he goes on a character arc that shows his vulnerable side or smth boring like a tv show would do when they run out of other ideas. its just an extra layer to the whole complex thing.

…so I’ve made some connections

(spoilers for all of TMA and TMAGP (as of Episode 15))

Lady Mowbray seems to have a lot of visual similarities to depictions of Scylla from Greek mythos. A woman of violent power with hounds at her hips and a taste for human flesh. The resemblance is uncanny, even with the added flavor of her being a capital-L Lady.

It’s interesting to me to see how the “fear powers” we’ve been introduced to so far in Protocol’s universe seem to have connections with Odyssey antagonists.

- Lady Mowbray aligns with Scylla

- The Sea (the Vast/Buried amalgamation from Ep. 11) aligns with Poseidon/the ocean (or possibly the Sirens)

- Mr. Bonzo aligns with Polyphemus

- The tree from Ep. 3 and the snakes from Ep. 14 align with Circe

- Needles seems to align well with Charybdis

- The starving crowd from Ep. 8 aligns with the Lotus Eaters (or possibly the Sirens)

Heck, even the Man on the Screen from Ep. 5 could align with the Oracle and the traveling merchant (responsible for the violin in Ep. 4 and (probably) the dice in Ep. 9) could align with Hermes (though I would hesitate to call either the Oracle or Hermes antagonists). Which leaves Ink5oul, the volunteers in Ep. 7, and the gambling app from Ep. 13 without any solid equivalents.

To be fair, I think basing all of TMAGP’s antagonists on a single epic may be too small-scale and isn’t enough for a solid theory, but the connections are interesting to dissect 👀

artist sirius means the world to me.

i think a lot about wizard portraits and how these pieces of art are given life, human characteristics, they talk and they move - and it does nothing but cause harm. memories, that's what they are. not a whole person, just the memories of whoever paints them and the vision they had of them.

and i think of sirius who grew up hearing stories of those in the frames, not because his mother believed in telling kids stories, no. he simply needed to know what there is to live up, what legacies he has to fill.

sirius who comes to hogwarts and gets a completely different perspective on portraits. who talks them into pranks, who asks them about their day, who befriends the Fat Lady and checks in on her everyday, who goes and sits with them after The Prank and listens to their advice.

and then i think of post-azkaban sirius with his mother's portrait. how he doesn't have memories of the hogwarts ones anymore and this? this screaming and yelling portrait? this is art? fuck that. fuck that.

sirius who starts art with a jagged claw (worn down from years of scrapping at azkaban's floors as if it would save him) in the garden, tracing lines in mud - maybe he's trying to map out memories. maybe he's trying to make them real again. sirius who then starts getting the bravery to spend time as a human again and finds his fingers tracing on the table the same way. who starts drawing little doodles at the bottom of letters to harry to try and cheer him up throughout the tournament. sirius who eventually graduates to ink and parchment, to canvas and paint and he creates art that tells stories without the movement. it's not needed, stories should be what we make them and if life has taught him anything, it's that it changes too much to imprint a small part of it into a wizarding portrait. so he goes traditional muggle.

sirius, who starts his biggest project. sirius who wants to show harry what james looked like to him. there's photographs, of course there is, but a lens doesn't come anywhere close to the love in his memories - so he paints. and he paints, and he paints, and he-

sirius, who started muggle art to bring things to life, and harry who sits infront of an unfinished portrait after the department of mysteries, wishing for nothing more than it to Move. to do Something. because it's incomplete. either way, muggle or magic, it would be incomplete. he had no time to finish the muggle painting before his death, and a wizarding one would be full of azkaban/shaped holes.

sirius who gets into art as a means of feeling complete again, and who never heard the muggle saying that art imitates life. who didn't know that his art would never be complete, even if finished. half a portrait and half a life, and half of james sitting and staring at still-drying paint.

I was going through my inbox on AO3 and remembered I love leaving ungodly, disgustingly long comments on works because it makes me look like a crazy person with a bulletin board full of papers and red string of all the things I like about them (and I love the reactions the authors give in reply, pfft)

I wish I always had the energy to write them because authors deserve to have their works appreciated and loved and analyzed to hell <3 please leave comments on things when you can! Fanfiction really is such a big part of the fandom community and being able to communicate and ramble about it is so fun and so rewarding
