May I offer another deconstruction of a Maribat trope? More specifically the one where a Batboy comes to Dupont, immediately hits it off with Mari & helps expose/ruin everyone and they live happily ever after!
You can't tell me they wouldn't take (1) look at Gabe & immediately have him as a prime suspect. Thus, maybe Tim, Jason, Dick or Damian goes for 'study overseas' & Gabriel graciously offer to let them stay with him for the business connections.
Cue them also immediately picking up on the rancid vibes of Lila, Bustier, Damocles BUT ALSO Marinette bcz surprise! They know how to spot a stalker! They also know how to remain objective & actually investigate. They point out to Adrien that the high road approach is wrong but still take into account that (1) his upbringing conditioned him to be passive & (2) Mari didn't tell him abt the threats and from what they've seen, Adrien definitely would've have let that slide.
And no, they don't bring Mari into the fold bcz they overheard her complaining to Alya abt Adrien's sudden divergence from the private schedule she somehow got her hands on? How she was going to sabotage a random girl for winking at Adrien teasingly?? How they're gonna have a family & hamsters??? And how she expects everyone to listen to her bcz she's their 'Everyday LB'???
Yeah, no. And if they find out she's the actual LB, still NO.
Bcz they see how much of a mess everything is. How she keeps CN out of the loop, expecting him to be the distraction, the goofy sidekick & meatshield. How that applies to the rest of her 'team' who aren't given consistent training. How she makes herself the lynchpin for everything.
More importantly, they see how underutilized CN is. So they take him under their wing in & out of the mask. Experimenting with his Cataclysm & enhanced senses, showing him the darker nitty-gritty places where the downtrodden go to be forgotten, how to act instead of react & assert himself in ways that matter. CN gains popularity as others note how proactive he is in stopping pettier crimes outside of akumas, how he takes the trouble to visit past victims & lend them an ear, etc.
How he & the other vigilante work even better than him & LB.
Naturally, she throws a fit, thinking they're trying to 'undermine' her. Nevermind that they've made more progress in the past month than she ever did in almost 2 years. When she tries to demand CN hand over his miraculous, he refuses, done with her bossiness, & she declares him a 'traitor'.
Cue Mari getting a restraining order & more blogs pointing out the unfair power dynamic of the hero duo. In the end, HM isn't even defeated with a bang but a whimper as CN & the Batboy knock Gabe out before he transforms, send evidence to the police and leave. LB is now left alone to explain to Paris what happened & deal with the fact that they now think she's either incompetent or a glory hound who purposely didn't do her job to milk the attention while Marinette is ALSO blamed for the fallout at Dupont bcz she's as complicit as the rest of them.
CN & Adrien disappear from Paris and maybe the Teen Titans gain a new member. One who's treated as an equal, a friend & after a while, family.
(Idk, for some reason, him joining the Titans sounds more plausible than the Batfam. Thoughts?)
I definetely think the Titans would be a better group for Adrien in terms of social growth because of the variety of people in that group, but the Batfamily is definetely a close second. It doesn't hurt that he's the closest thing to a Batfamily character outside of the costume (we'll just say that he's Selina's nephew ;) )
Lovely post btw!

Added inspo! Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender) Enola Holmes, Asuna (Sword Art Online) Anthony Lockwood (Lockwood & Co.) more coming soon…
Kimberly Ann Possible (Abigail Cowen)
5/4/2002. Taurus.
She/Her

Lawful good

past !!
Kimberly Ann Possible never thought a summer gig babysitting would lead her into the world of moonlight crime fighting.
At first, she thought it was a joke. The emails labeled "Help Wanted" asking for assistance with all sorts of thefts and major crimes.
And so it began. Cheerleader and student by day, superhero by night.
These supervillians were wacky, always stealing the strangest things and going by goofy nicknames.
The Big Case, as it would become known to Kim and Ron, was a tricky one. Connecting the dots on a series of faulty projects lead them to the desk of one Dr. Drew Drakken.
They foiled his plans, sending him off to jail in handcuffs, but the screams of rage haunted Kim for years.
"I'll be back Kim Possible! You'll be sorry when I get my hands on you!"
Needless to say, KP spent the rest of high school looking over her shoulder for any glimpse of Drakken or his associates.
Graduation was not a happy affair for her, because with it, came the release date of Dr. Drakken.
Enrolling in college, Kim realized that she needed to seriously decide what she was doing with her future.
You can't put moonlighting vigilante on your tax return!
So that's where college came in, and everything was going smooth until the morning she woke up in Evermore.
present !!
~ Waking up in Evermore was a shake-up that Kim never expected.
~ Thank goodness Ron and Wade and even Monique were there to hang on to.
~ While she misses her family, it feels good to be independent for the first time in her life. No more Kimmie cub, no more Cheer Captain, just Ms. Kim Possible, Detective.
~ So here she is, investigating the hits on her new website, making new friends, and keeping her eyes peeled for Dr. Drakken.
future !!
So what now?
1. Get back to Middleton and make sure her family is safe.
2. Get the full grasp on running this private investigation biz so she can kick it off back home.
3. Get kissed, fall in love? There are so many interesting (and attractive) folks around Evermore…
taken connections
Daphne Blake (jeepersdcph)
wanted connections
Ron Stoppable - bestie, sidekick, the peanut butter to Kim’s jelly.
Rival - think Bonnie. Someone who has a similar skill set to Kim’s and they are constantly at odds and at each other’s throats.
Enemy - Without Dr. Drakken around, Kim thought she wouldn’t get another arch nemesis, but it’s bound to happen anyway.
Fling/Crush - Kim is a flirt, even if she pretends she isn’t. Finally free from her parent’s ever watchful eyes, maybe it’s time to branch out and give a few things a try!

Family says they feel destroyed after man was slain at east Oak Cliff home
Carlos King was fatally shot on April 2 in the 2400 block of Kathleen Avenue in east Oak Cliff.
He was 44.
FERRIS — Carlos King was once a carefree, goofy little kid who couldn’t seem to sit still.
The Dallas Morning News is telling the stories of people killed in homicides in 2024 to show the toll of violent crime in Dallas.
Reporting throughout the year will probe what officials are doing to address a crime that claimed at least 246 lives last year.
He was a nuisance at the movie theater at 4 years old; embarrassing his mother as he walked back and forth in front of the screen, no regard for the audience.
At random he would play soccer with a bright red clown nose, and couldn’t be beat at a round of Super Mario Bros.
Sometimes, his siblings would find out he’d skipped school by looking out the second-story window of their home and spotting him at a nearby park.
Those were simpler times, his family recalled, before Carlos was shaped by life into someone new.
Seventeen years ago, when Carlos remarried, his relatives said he became more and more distant.
He was a deeply private man, his brother-in-law Greg Gammill explained, who never wanted anyone to worry about him.
No one knew the extent of what was going on behind closed doors, he said, and none of them thought it would escalate to the point it did — to that final moment outside the front door of Carlos’ home.
“The range of emotions that you feel through that whole thing — the one most overall, at least that I feel, is the helplessness,” Greg said.
“You want to do something, you want to scream, you want to lash out, but nothing is going to change anything, anything.”
An altar on the memory of Carlos King, remain in the house of his brother, on Saturday, May…
An altar on the memory of Carlos King, remain in the house of his brother, on Saturday, May 11, 2024 in Ferris.
Carlos King was fatally shot on April 2 in east Oak Cliff.
On April 1, it seemed as if Carlos was feeling the strain of the isolation.
He called one of his brothers and told him how much he missed being close to everyone and how badly he wanted things to be different.
He promised to reach out again soon.
The next day, Carlos was fatally shot in the 2400 block of Kathleen Avenue in east Oak Cliff.
He was 44.
“I’ve been trying to figure out why — why he left us, why that happened to him,” his brother Dante King said. “A lot of bad things happen to great people.”
Carlos’ stepson, 27-year-old Alvaro Vasquez, was arrested in connection with his death.
Police wrote in an arrest-warrant affidavit that Vasquez was cloaked in a ski mask and a red-hooded shirt as he waited on the front porch for Carlos to get home.
He declined to speak with investigators.
The motive remains unclear.
“It was an act of violence,” Carlos’ sister Dulce Gammill said. “We call it the way it is.”
Brothers of Carlos King, Dante, 36, (left) and Hector, 47, (right), alongside his other family members pose for a photo on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Dante’s house in Ferris.
Carlos King was fatally shot by his stepson on April 2 in east Oak Cliff
More than a dozen family members gathered at a relative’s home in Ferris last month to center Carlos’ life in the story of his death.
He is one of at least 90 people slain in Dallas this year.
“Memories are what keep us together,” Dulce said.
Carlos worked in construction and had the kind of drive that inspired those around him to go the extra mile.
He was so attentive to others, Dulce recalled, he brought a portable stove to work.
If a co-worker forgot their lunch, Carlos was ready to step in.
He had a memorable smile, she added, and was always the first to ask how everyone else was doing.
Carlos was also a father of three boys — ages 5, 15 and 16. He loved them beyond measure, Dulce said.
Man jailed in east Oak Cliff slaying was victim’s stepson, affidavit says
While Carlos and his siblings were a tight-knit group growing up, he was particularly close with his parents, Daniel and Elida King.
“He was always looking for mom and dad,” Dulce said. “Always.”
When Elida would confide in Carlos about something she was going through, he would rush to reassure her, Dulce said.
“Don’t listen to it,” Carlos would say. “Don’t worry about it.”
“He taught us a lesson of compassion,” Elida said.
That bond made telling Elida and Daniel about the shooting one of the hardest moments they’ve faced, Dante said.
“People have no idea of the damage they did and the irreparable harm this does to us,” Daniel said in Spanish. “This threw our family overboard; he destroyed our family, and all the damage he did will not be repaired with jail.”
In the absence of reason, Dante said, they will lean on the values Carlos tried to instill in others: Don’t fret over the small things. Focus on family. Choose love over hate.
“I believe he’s in a better place,” Dante said. “He should be next to God.”
Affidavit:
Man jailed in east Oak Cliff slaying was victim’s stepson
The man jailed earlier this week in connection with an east Oak Cliff slaying was the victim’s stepson, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News.
Alvaro Vasquez, 27, was booked into the Dallas County jail Wednesday on a murder charge in the fatal shooting of Carlos King, 44.
It was unclear whether he has an attorney.
King was shot about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of Kathleen Avenue, near Garrison Street and Fordham Road.
Dallas Fire-Rescue took him to a hospital, where he died, police said.
Police wrote in the affidavit that King and an unnamed witness had just arrived at the home from picking up King’s other children at school when they saw Vasquez standing near the entrance wearing a dark-colored ski mask and a red-hooded shirt.
The witness had turned around to grab groceries from the car when they heard multiple gunshots.
After seeing King lying on the ground, wounded, the affidavit said the witness reportedly yelled, asking Vasquez why he would “shoot his father.”
According to the affidavit, investigators determined King was Vasquez’s stepfather and that the two lived together.
Vasquez didn’t respond to the witness’ question, the affidavit said, and fled the scene.
Officers who responded to a 911 call about the shooting found Vasquez nearby and took him to police headquarters, where he declined to be interviewed and asked for a lawyer, according to the affidavit.
Vasquez remained in custody Friday, with bail set at $500,000.

Something I know no one will ever contend with when they just want to write a hit piece about us, but...
When Moffat said on the A Scandal in Belgravia commentary, “If you watch the show carefully, there’s subtext about John’s drinking,” what did he mean? He wasn’t being flippant, he’s said one of his favorite writers is William Goldman and writers should study him because he “knows everything.” Goldman’s Ten Commandments on Writing say to “put a subtext under every text” and not to be too on the nose.
So what is the “real” subtext to why John drinks, and why does John drink when he’s alone with Sherlock and trying to get him to open up, or otherwise thinking about Sherlock? If the subtext is not about John’s relationship with Sherlock, then like... who else is in the room in those scenes, what’s going on, who is John actually thinking about, and why is it so important to the story that Moffat would include it? What storyline does the subtext of John’s drinking pertain to? It must be pretty big to not have been revealed yet, so it shouldn’t be hard to make a case for.
Similarly: When Moffat and Gatiss say that The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, a movie noteworthy for depicting Holmes as a homosexual in love with Watson, is the inspiration for their adaptation, what do people imagine they adapted from it? Because it wasn’t the characterization, they don’t much resemble the BBC Sherlock characterizations. Barely any plot points were borrowed, and minor ones at that. Why did they pick the big overtly gay adaptation for the basis of their show from a hundred straight alternatives? Why did Gatiss say the thing he liked about it was that Holmes was in love with Watson?
I mean, I know people who hate us will never actually watch it, but the movie is not subtle. The movie isn’t a bunch of gay gags, the movie makes very clear that Holmes is genuinely homosexual and in love with Watson in a deeply painful way that queer people can recognize and relate to, and the same vibe is heavy in series 3 especially. For example, the endings of TSoT and HLV are not gay gags, they are things that happened in the plot and were not presented as remotely funny.
There are two reasonable perspectives on this:
1) It is not especially weird for people who pay attention to what the writers have said about their stories to think all the gay stuff is intentional, and its not weird to have fun chasing down things the writers have taken care to talk about. That’s what fans do, they try to predict where stories are going. No one made hit pieces ridiculing Jon and Daeneyrs shippers because they recognized what the foreshadowing in Game of Thrones was saying, and they were basing it off almost nothing compared to what the showrunners of Sherlock have said and taken care to include in the plot and subtext. People write hit pieces about us because they deeply believe it’s stupid for queer people to think a gay romance could be depicted, we had the misfortune of having a sense of humor about ourselves (calling it a “conspiracy” and ourselves a “cult”), and were enthusiastic about the show and writers whose fandom we’re a part of.
2) The gay stuff is intentional, but all a big joke despite appearances to the contrary. Most of the antis even argued that the gay stuff was intentional, they just thought it was to fuck with people or be provocative. Some of them were even dreading S4, including while it was airing, because they thought we were going to be proven right and we’d be insufferable. If people who hated us worried we could be right, then how delusional could we be?
I can understand someone thinking it all being a big joke is more likely than a TV show depicting a gay romance, but it does not follow that people deserve to be an object of public ridicule because they recognized a bunch of queer allusions and painful queer life experiences that resonated with them and considered that the writers, one of whom is queer and unabashedly obsessed with the works in question, may have positive motives for including those things. It feels like punishing people for doing their due diligence of actually researching the writers’ feelings about things and their influences, rather than just piling on and calling them homophobes. I’m not trying to invalidate anyone’s opinions if that’s how they feel about Moffat and Gatiss nowadays, I’m just saying it’s not some shameful thing for people to actually investigate these things and conclude differently. It’s okay to think writers are talented and clever, and their fandom should be a place where it’s okay to explore that.
What makes me most sad about this is that there is genuinely no area of life where people can just play around anymore without being hunted down. Like, politics is fucking miserable, the pandemic is miserable, I just had a friend kill himself a few months ago because of how bad life is lately, a close relative who I never thought would have suicidal ideation has it now, I have been fighting wanting to die for years, in the U.S. none of us have any idea if we’re ever getting any sort of pandemic stimulus again -- so many of us are suffering immensely right now, it should be okay to be goofy and creative in a fandom without someone deciding its their prerogative to profit off us because they think we’re weird, or whatever.
The reason there’s a lot of crazy meta analysis is because this was supposed to be a relatively safe, creative place where people can try their hand at analyzing stories without being graded or made to feel inadequate, so we treat metas a lot like fanfics where it’s not really appropriate to just rip people’s shit apart no matter how illogical it is, and we find things we like about analysis we don’t agree with in that same spirit: it’s a cool idea anyway, it’s artistically inspiring, it got close to a more compelling idea, etc. I have a big packet of fan mails where several people told me they had been scared and self-conscious to share their thoughts on things, and TJLC helped them open up and inspired them to major in literary or film-related majors. People start somewhere and it’s cruel to make fun of them because they weren’t great at something that doesn’t fucking matter.
FANDOM IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A SUPER SERIOUS SPACE. NO ONE PUTS ON A TUXEDO BEFORE THEY LOG IN TO TUMBLR. NO ONE NEEDS SOME OUTSIDER TAKING THE THINGS THEY OFFERED IN THE SPIRIT OF FUN OUT OF CONTEXT TO PRESENT TO A WIDER AUDIENCE THEY DELIBERATELY AVOID BECAUSE THAT AUDIENCE IS MEAN AND SENDS THEM DEATH THREATS AND HOMOPHOBIC AND MISOGYNISTIC SLURS AND SUICIDE ADVICE. IT IS ACTUALLY NOT AN ENORMOUS CHARACTER FAILING TO SHARE BAD ANALYSES OF A TV SHOW, AND SHOULD NOT BE A MATTER OF NATIONAL INTEREST.
But places where people can open up and try things out increasingly can’t exist anymore, because even in a low stakes environment like a fandom there are busybody ghouls who want to profit off being condescending about how people spend their leisure time. It doesn’t add anything to the world except their bank accounts.

SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 1. I JUST REALLY WANTED TO GET THIS OFF MY CHEST BECAUSE I AM A FILTHY KINNIE
*********************************************
"Kokichi I said don't follow me."
"But Ran Ran please!"
Kokichi whined at the taller male in front of him. His hands were balled into fist in front of him and his face was squished into a pout. Rantaro sighed and frowned. He had told Kokichi over and over again that he wanted to go about things on his own for a little while and he certainly kept his plan a secret much to Kokichi's displeasure. One of his main reasons being he didn't want Kokichi to get hurt if something were to happen.
"But I can keep watch! Hell I could sneak into places because you're too tall! I can lock pick! You need my expertise." Kokichi stated matter of factly and m shoved his fist onto his hips.
Rantaro's green eyes locked on to the purple eyes in front of him, a soft smile replacing the frown. He could feel his chest tightening at having to keep Kokichi at a distance. He knew things like this would mess with his head and push any ounce of trust he had gained through their small amount of time together out of the window. Kokichi wouldn't get close to anyone so carelessly. The fact that Rantaro was able to dip his finger tips past the cracks in the walls Kokichi had up was both a blessing and a curse.
From day one, Kokochi seemed to latch on to Rantaro. Something about each other acted as a magnet to the other. Neither of them were quite sure what it was but they didn't find it pivotal to question. Kokichi didn't know what personal space was but Rantaro didn't mind. He would knock and come into Rantaro's room as soon as it was open the tinest bit and before Rantaro could properly invite him in.
He also noticed pretty early on that Rantaro had some information none of the others did. Kokichi hung around him and called it "keeping and eye on him" in case he was the mastermind since he was so suspicious. Rantaro knew that was not quite the truth the first time Kokichi let down a wall and fell asleep in his bed.
From then on Kokichi would make his way into Rantaro's bedroom each night. Sometimes he would leave in the middle of the night. Other times they were so caught up in laughing at each others antics that neither of them noticed when they would both doze off. Kokichi got to see the goofy side of Rantaro. Like when he would bump into something in his room and knock it over and respond with "Sorry. I've just got a fat ass." Or, "Who fucked the legend? Who fucked the legend Danny Devito?" After a random thought process. It was refreshing to know he was just as silly and could keep up with Kokichi's antics.
The two had become inseparable, but not to anyone around them. They kept their stuff private to not attract any unwanted attention or questions. It was safer for the both of them to work together in secrecy. Kokichi would still throw jokes at him across the table at breakfast or make flirty remarks but in a way that made everyone think he was completely faking it.
"I'll tell you what," Rantaro reached out and held Kokichi's shoulder gently. "If you let me go do this on my own and I get us out of here, I promise I will have you by my side when we escape. Okay? I won't just forget about you and move out when were out." He squeezed his grip only slightly to affirm his own statement.
Kokichi deadpanned and never took his eyes off of Rantaro's as he processed the words. He wanted to believe him. He really did, but something didn't seem right. "No." His voice was monotone.
"What do you mean no?" Rantaro raised an eyebrow.
Rantaro's confidence really was something to admire. Kokichi knew that Rantaro had something up those billowing sleeves of his. Something no one else here had.
"Just kidding!" Kokichi flashed a cheeky grin. "Fine. I'll let you do whatever you need to. Just please don't get yourself hurt okay? I don't wanna have to clean up your mess!" Kokichi poked Rantaro in the chest and stuck his tongue out.
A smile returned to Rantaro's face. He knew full well that Kokichi was just lying to keep his emotions about it safe.
"You need to stay out of the way and I'm serious. For your sake, just stay inside your room or something. I promise that I will be back okay?" He pulled Kokichi into a hug and held him there, an arm around his shoulders and the other hand behind Kokichi's head. It took a moment, but Kokichi finally wrapped his arms around Rantaro's waist and buried his face into his chest. They stayed like that for a couple of minutes to just be with each other, both of them uncertain of the outcome of Rantaro's plan.
Rantaro leaned down and kissed the top of Kokichi's fluffy hair before pulling back, a little reluctantly.
"I've gotta go now okay? Time is running out and I really need to this for everyone." The aura had changed back to a serious tone now and Kokichi knew that meant business.
"Okay. I love you Ran Ran." Kokichi pulled back and turned away, not wanting to watch Rantaro leave from his room.
There was no joke or lie at the end which was unusual for Kokichi.
"I love you too Kichi."
Time seemed to go by so slow as Kokichi tried to busy himself in his room. Sheets of paper surrounded him on the bed as he tried desperately to distract himself. He tried napping but no one could sleep at a time like this.
Suddenly the monitor turned on. Kokichi's heart leaped and he wondered if he would see Rantaro's face appear. Maybe he had defeated Monokuma in a cool ninja fight and had taken over the system.
The loud music that began blaring almost made him jump out of bed. He rushed over to the monitor and jumped up and down trying to even reach it, hoping there was a volume button but it was no use. He covered his ears and went for the door, reaching out for the handle but Rantaros voice from earlier stopped him. In one hour everything would be over. "Dont follow me
I promise I'll be back."
Kokichi's hand hovered over the knob, trembling slightly. His stomach churned as he struggled to decide whether he should trust him or not. He didn't realize tears had welled into his eyes until one began to drop down his cheek. The thought of dying scared him. If Rantaro failed and they all died, Kokichi would be here alone for it. His whole body shook and he let out a sob. So much for being strong through it all.
He jerked his hand back and groaned in frustration. The music surrounding him made it hard to think. As sudden as the music started, it shut off just as abruptly.
Kokichi looked up at the monitor with wide terror filled eyes. What was going to happen now? Would it be sudden or would they have to endure it slowly?
What he didn't expect was to be shaken out of his thoughts but the unwelcomed voice of Monokuma.
"A body has been discovered! Please, make your way to the library to begin investigation!"
Throwing all his previous thoughts out, Kokichi swung his door open and ran as fast as he legs would go, catching up with Iruma, Hoshi, Korekiyo, Kirumi, and Kiibo.
The sight before him once he reached the back of library made his vision begin to grow blurry. The sound of his heart strings snapping into loose strings in his chest blocked out the sounds of those around him.
There laid Rantaro, dead, in a puddle of his own blood.
No. No no no no no.
"This is a lie right?" Tears were falling down his cheeks as he spoke and his lip quivered as he tried to keep a sob in. "My dearest Rantaro is dea- I mean was killed?" His voice squeaked and he cried out.
"Oh shut up would you? It's not like you even cared." Tenko shot at him.
Kokichi immediately stopped, save for a few sniffles as he tried to collect himself. No one here would believe him anyway. They all thought he was a heartless monster and he knew it. The looks he was recieving told it all. "Nishishi! You caught me! Thank goodness this thing isn't boring anymore!" He threw his hands behind his head and grinned wide enough to make his eyes squint closed. His abdomen burned as he gulped and felt his emotions plummet to the bottom of his stomach.
It felt like a slap in the face when no one took the first blood perk. Why would someone do something like that to someone like Rantaro. He didn't even do anything wrong. Kokichi wanted to scream and lash out at everyone surrounding Monokuma when they were faced with actually having to have a trial.
While the others were fixated on arguing with Monokuma, Kokichi snuck over to Rantaro's body. One last look at the boy had actually began to rebuild his thoughts on humanity. He squatted down quietly and let his finger tips brush against Rantaro's still warm cheek on his way to his collar. He clasped his fingers around a chain and yanked it off with ease. He kept a good hold on it with his index finger as he let it droop down his forearm into his sleeve to hide it.
"Well if you'll excuse me!" He suddenly shouted. "I have to do some investigating by myself. I don't need anyone with me to figure this out. Good luck everyone!"
"Oh no you don't. You can't get out of this that easily." Kaito stormed towards him but Kaede stopped him.
"Let him go. We will catch up with him later." Kaede kept her arm out to keep him in place.
Kaito huffed and glared at Kokichi but Kokichi didn't care. He just walked slowly out of the library and made his way back to his room without taking another look behind.
As Kokichi walked, he took the necklace out of his sleeve and examined it. This was the only thing he had left of him. No one would take this away from him. He slipped the necklace up under his checkered scarf and clasped it behind his neck. It was perfectly hidden from everyone else but he would know it was there.
As soon as Kokichi walked into his dorm and shut the door, he hoped that either they were sound proof or the others were still down in the library. A scream pierced the room as Kokichi broke down.
He jumped on to the bed and began hitting his pillows as he sobbed, getting out everything he could.
"You promised! You promised!"
He repeated to himself over and over. He cried until he began gagging at how hard he was crying and how scratchy his throat was becoming. Nothing felt real anymore. Rantaro was gone and now he was alone. Kokichi wished it was him instead. What he wouldn't give to be in Rantaro's place now.
"You asshole!" His voice was giving out and he was beginning to feel nauseous.
"It should have been me." The confession came out a whisper as fatigue came over his body. Everything began to settle into a numbness as he curled up on to the bed. With the last bit of energy he could muster, he reached up and held the pendant in the palm of his hand.
Kokichi wouldn't let Rantaro's death be for nothing. It was not fair for someone with his heart to be taken out of the world like that. No matter what it took, Kokichi would make sure they got out of there. That was Rantaro's plan, his wish, and Kokichi would follow through with it. Even if it meant they all saw him in a bad light until the end. He would learn to be alone again.

Essential Avengers: Avengers #205: Shadow of the Claw!
March, 1981
"... And the CLAW shall inherit the Earth!” isn’t even what the villain plan is, come on, cover copy person.
Yellow Claw was going to have a bunch of kids, make them fight to the death, and then the super child was going to inherit the Earth.
The actual cover is neat though. I like how all the red draws attention to the center where red is not.
Yes, I am good at talk about art.
Anyway, last time on Avengers: a woman named Shu Han who had been brought to Yellow Claw’s island to be one of Yellow Claw’s many wives (despite being a genius physicist athlete and could honestly be a superhero in her own right with those skills) sent out a distress signal which was eventually received by the Avengers. A lot of goofy stuff happened, Vision got captured like a dingus, Wasp did none things, a cyborg slime kraken was fought, and eventually Yellow Claw was like ‘whaaaat Shu Han doesn’t love me? Fine, begone!’ and told the Avengers to gtfo his island so he can start living his harem anime protagonist self-insert fic and also take over the world.
Which brings us to now.
After his dingus-like capture, Vision needs to be recharged because photons are his sweet calories and he never diets.
In fact, weirdly, he’s hungrier than usual this time. Sixty-seven whole additional solar units more than usual hungrier.
I don’t know how much a solar unit is. Even as a ballpark. But Iron Man finds it noteworthy so I’m noting it.
Meanwhile, in the only one person sitting room, Wasp retcons some actual actions into the last issue so that her entire screentime wasn’t pointless.
Maybe I should learn to be more patient on multiple part stories.
No. No, its the comic writers who are wrong.
Anyway, while Wasp was spying on Yellow Claw, she noticed some weird equipment in the research lab, including a lot of tubes filled with odd, sparkly mist.
Unfortunately, that’s all she managed to see before Yellow Claw told the Avengers to gtfo his island.
Which leaves them without much they can do about Yellow Claw.
Sure, they suspect he’s up to something. Hell, Iron Man would even admit that they know he’s up to something.
But being able to prove it is a different matter. And since Yellow Claw’s island is in disputed waters, moving without proving could lead to political fallout.
Captain America: “Iron Man is right. If we had proof that the Yellow Claw poses a global threat, international law would allow us to investigate. But as it is, we don’t have a single, tangible clue to--”
And then Jarvis walks in and tells them that the Yellow Claw’s top assistant, Dr. William Liu, is here to speak with them.
The timing this man has. Outstanding.
They scan the man to make sure he’s not walking in with a bunch of laser guns stuffed down his pants and then let him in.
And Dr. Liu pleads for the Avengers to help him. Cap asks why they should help or even trust one of Yellow Claw’s men.
Dr. Liu: “I could no longer live with the horrible nature of the master’s plan! That is why I secretly left the island, hoping that my absence would go unnoticed until I could reach you, and tell you of-- AAAGGHH!”
He doesn’t get to finish his warning because his crotch suddenly explodes.
I don’t know how else to describe it.
Apparently Yellow Claw rigged his assistant to explode in case of treachery or just for funsies. A barely alive, crotch exploded apparently a cyborg all along Dr. Liu realizes that Yellow Claw must have remotely activated his destruct code.
He gives the Avengers some coordinates in Australia and begs them to stop Yellow Claw.
Dr. Liu: “... Y-you must stop... the Claw! Y-you’re the only hope for... the children...!”
And then he dies. And based on panels, it seems like his chest exploded more than his crotch. His pants are intact.
This was the proof the Avengers needed to act, so as soon as Dr. Liu’s body is carried away by ambulance, the Avengers prepare to leave.
But Jarvis finds a note on Vision’s door begging leave from the mission.
Vision: “I regret that I have not yet recuperated to the point where I may participate in Avengers’ activities. Please understand. I do not wish to be disturbed.”
What an oddly formal ‘I’m sick, don’t come in’ letter to pin to your door.
Iron Man is perplexed since he oversaw Vision’s recharge himself and the solar gas tank should be full. But Scarlet Witch says that Vision has his reasons to do things and they should just carry on without him.
So off they go in the Quinjet.
But as soon as they take off, Vision goes to take the second Quinjet.
Why, he’s not sick in his room at all!
Hours later, the Avengers arrive in Australia, of course passing over a kangaroo, or else how would we know its Australia?
And at the coordinates poor exploded Dr. Liu gave them, they find a cave. And in the cave they find a secret base where that sparkle gas Wasp saw being loaded onto three missiles.
Y’know. I think I gave Vision too much shit last time for his stealth fail. Because the Avengers as a whole get spotted while they’re scoping out the missile cave.
Black Panther needs to give them all some refresher learning.
MEANWHILE, though. Back at Yellow Claw’s island, Vision ditches his Quinjet and intangibles into Yellow Claw’s base.
When he reaches Yellow Claw’s throne slash harem room where Yellow Claw welcomes him back and asks him how the hell he discovered he had been tampered with.
Vision explains: 1) that he required extra power to recharge, 2) that he detected ultra-wave radiation being emitted from Dr. Liu when he blew up, 3) detected the same radiation from his own bad self. Thus he deduced that he had been altered to be an unwitting mole through which the Yellow Claw could spy on the Avengers and that the alteration was what was draining extra power.
Also why Vision ditched the Avengers and came here instead.
And it was all a very smart move up until it was a dumb one.
Yellow Claw was prepared that Vision might figure things out and show up again so the doorway had a Vision trapping trap installed in it and now Vision is trapped in the Vision trapping trap.
After all his ‘I’ve come alone to defeat you’ bravado, Vision can now only defiantly claim “the other Avengers will turn your dreams into dust!”
You Tried, Vision. You Tried.
But Yellow Claw isn’t done having been one step ahead of things yet.
See, he let Dr. Liu escape and warn the Avengers because based on the broken into vent he knew that Wasp had been in his base and probably saw enough to suspect something was up. The coordinates Dr. Liu gave the Avengers was a trap!
A trap of three strong mooks with really dumb names.
Bludgeoner, Transformer, and Compressor.
Guarantee these guys won’t be recurring.
Anyway. Iron Man and Jocasta repulsor and eyeeeeee beam at the three so Transformer can readily demonstrate why his name when he absorbs the energy and blasts it back at them.
And Bludgeoner and his big hammer hands bludgeon Wonder Man and Captain America.
And Compressor, why if you guessed that his big ol cheese grater hands compress the air between them to put the squeeze on anyone stuck between, ... wow. That’s a really good guess.
You’re good at comic books, friend!
Scarlet Witch uses a hex bolt to drop a stalactite on Compressor to free Beast but the fly swatter hands man crushes the rock and shoots the shrapnel back at Scarlet Witch.
And Wasp is as useless as she often is. Sigh.
Iron Man tries to swing behind Compressor and repulsor him but Compressor blasts air and sends Iron Man SKRRUURRUNCH into the cave dirt, carving up a furrow.
Sure, this has been only two pages but this is a bad showing against three dinguses with dumb names. I mean for crying out loud, a man named Compressor just bodied a guy called Iron Man.
Back at the Claw Cave... no, wait, that’s confusing. The Avengers are fighting in a cave. The Claw Condo? Back at the Claw Condo, Yellow Claw tells Vision that hey his friends are going to die gruesome and frankly embarrassing deaths but maybe Vision could eke out a little win for himself.
Claw has long platonically admired his construction and capabilities and with Dr. Liu exploded, he does need a new second-in-command.
To sweeten the pot, he’ll even explain his villainous plot because I’m sure we’ve all been wondering about that.
Yellow Claw: “You see, my line was created to rule this planet -- though mankind has stupidly resisted that inevitability. But now, despite the chemical concoctions that prolong my existence, I grow old. My years are numbered. And that is why I selected these women, exemplary in both body and mind, to assure a form of immortality.
For each shall bear me a son, and in time those sons shall fight each other to the death! The survivor, the fittest, shall then fulfill my fate by becoming supreme ruler of the Earth!
Though I swear, he’ll not be subjected to the same obstinacy, to the blind sense of human freedom that has frustrated me for these many decades!
For within those cryogenic storage banks is genetic material gathered from the world’s most physically and mentally perfect humans! And from that matter, my heir will create a new order, a new population, all raised to obey by a single edit: unswerving reverence to my son!”
Vision: There is a flaw to your logic, Claw. You seem to forget that there are already several billion people on this planet -- people who will never serve the likes of you.
Yellow Claw: Ah, once more you underestimate me. For at this very moment, the missiles at my Australian launch base are being readied for take-off. Once in orbit around the Earth, they will dock with my private spacecraft.
Then at my command, they will release a specially formulated vapor, one which will permeat the entire planetary atmosphere, rendering everyone on the globe -- except for those here in my closed-environment sanctuary -- irrevocably sterile!
With no children being born, the Earth will be barren in the space of a few generations -- barren save for the followers of the new Yellow Claw!”
Okay, so, credit where it’s due.
That’s a VERY evil plan.
Sterilize planet, replace humanity with genetically servile slave race, make babies fight to the death for the right to rule that whole shebang.
In terms of a dick move that's a major league one.
So when Yellow Claw asks if Vision will become his new number Liu, Vision answers: “Perhaps, miscreant. Perhaps I will join you... in hell!”
Yellow Claw isn’t too bothered by the refusal and even decides to let Vision have a front row seat to his plan being fulfilled.
And I don’t mean tying him to the front of one of the missiles.
I mean, Yellow Claw’s throne room launches from his base as a hot rod pink spaceship, sold separately.
Back at the Avengers fight, Wasp does a thing.
Honestly, its a pleasant surprise.
Her powerset of ‘be small, shoot tiny lasers’ not being much of a help, she thinks outside the box. She scoops some dirt from the cave floor and jams it into Bludgeoner’s arm joints to slow him down.
And then Wonder Man clocks him in the face. Who bludgeons the bludgeoners indeed.
It does go to show that a ‘useless’ power like Wasp’s can actually be very useful if you write her smart. A superhero team should be more than just big punches, more than just spectacular powers. Wasp has great combo potential for playing things strategic and that should be something the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are too.
Beast realizes that Wasp had a really good idea. The Avengers outnumber these three jokers so why not gang up on them with teamwork? Besides, they’re not working together in any way so the Avengers might as well.
So Beast grabs Transformer’s shield arm to leave him open for Jocasta to OPTIC BLAST!
And Cap throws his mighty shield to know Compressor’s arms apart so Iron Man can kick him in the face.
Which is impressive since Iron Man was flat on his ass in the immediately previous panel.
Apparently this was a gaffe caused by the pages being edited separately and the error not being caught before the book went to print.
As far as things go, not the worst error! I didn’t even notice it until it was pointed out.
Anyway, in a fit of pique from his dumb name dudes losing the fight, Yellow Claw kliks a button. The goons join hands or whatever weapon they have passing for hands and then they blow up.
Yellow Claw: “It is done. It cost the lives of three worthy operatives but at last -- the Avengers are dead!”
Ah, villains. Always ready to flip the board if they start losing.
And with the Avengers totally dead for realsies no foolin’ Yellow Claw is free to launch his missiles full of sterility vapors.
Actually, he could do that by remote so I don’t know why he had to wait for the Avengers to be explode. He could have just launched the missiles while they were busy fighting.
Anyway.
With the Avengers dead I guess the book will be about- can’t think of a good one for that recurring goof. So yeah, the Avengers aren’t dead.
Scarlet Witch used her powers to shield the team just in the nick of time.
Captain America: “Thanks, Wanda. If you hadn’t cast that protective hex sphere around us just in time...!”
Scarlet Witch: “Don’t mention it, captain. I rather enjoy being alive myself!”
Although, I didn’t know she could just shield people with her powers like that. Unless she altered the probability that explosions hurt so that they didn’t. Yes, that sounds plausible.
The two flying members of the team, Iron Man and Wonder Man fly out of the cave after the missiles, still determined to save the days as heroes often do.
The missiles launch into orbit and then something really goofy happens.
I’ve been saying missiles because the comic has been saying missiles and I guess they are technically missiles. But if I asked you to imagine a supervillain launching some missiles full of a chemical weapon, would you imagine this?
When the missiles launch into orbit they link up with Yellow Claw’s hot rod pink spaceship.
When I first saw this, I thought: is he going to launch them again from his spaceship? A bit of an unnecessary additional step.
But no. That is not what is going on here.
The man is just super committed to his iconography. The missiles join the spaceship and then bend to make it clear its supposed to resemble a claw.
That’s the kind of goofy nonsense I’m here for.
Iron Man and Wonder Man show up, to Yellow Claw’s alarm, and try to attack the hot pink spaceship but bounce off uselessly. The thing is protected by a strong force field.
Yellow Claw probably goes ‘phew’ internally and gets on with his evil plan.
With the missiles bent, as missiles are known to do??, to resemble claws, they can begin to spray the sterility gas into the atmosphere.
Yellow Claw: “Soon, it will be over! When enough vapors are released to mingle with the entire atmosphere -- the shadow of the Claw shall cover the Earth!”
And with things looking grim, Vision decides that things are down to him. I mean he did go off alone and is now stuck inside the enemy’s spaceship. He’s in a good position to mess things up.
So stuck suspended in a trap, he increases his density and mass to his limit and beyond! One ton, two, further!
The energy bubble holding him gives way to his weight, allowing him to make contact with the deck of the ship. Adding his weight to that of the ship and throwing it out of orbit.
The ship will crash into Earth and at this point, it can’t be stopped.
Yellow Claw is fairly pissed.
He smashes the device holding Vision captive and then starts trying to kill him with his bare hands.
And he’s capable of hitting Vision when he’s intangible because he studied Vision while he was a prisoner, the first time he was a prisoner. And created circuity to his metal sleeves that lets him tangible the intangible.
And thus he tries to strangle Vision.
I’m not sure he needs to breathe. Probably why Yellow Claw is punching him instead in later panels.
Vision points out that this fight is fairly pointless and that Yellow Claw could be using this time to escape but Yellow Claw is determined that he get something accomplished today.
And then the ship crashes into the ocean.
A short time skip later and the Avengers have parked the Quinjet on the ocean (it buoyant) and are searching for the Vision.
How did they know the Vision was here? Didn’t they think he was recuperating back at the mansion?
Apparently another gaffe but one that could be handwaved. Earlier in the issue when the three dumbnames appeared, Yellow Claw appeared on a monitor to taunt the Avengers and Vision was visible behind him. Captain America even appears to be pointing at Vision like ‘hey I know that guy from work.’
So conceivably they knew he was with Yellow Claw when his ship crashed.
Iron Man gives up on searching the ocean, not being able to find the Vision in the water but Vision just peaces in from the sky. He intangible’d out the ship just before the crash. He’s totally fine.
Scarlet Witch: “I am glad that you are safe, my husband. And I’m glad that the danger has ended.”
Vision: “No, my love. Though it is true that the Yellow Claw is dead, that he will no longer plague us with his particular form of madness -- there are too many others like him, others who would rise to power by crushing the freedom that is every being’s birthright.
And as long as any of them remain unchallenged -- the danger will never end.”
With that, Vision sort of stares out across the ocean moodily. Because a true Avengers story ends with someone staring at something moodily.
And I dunno! Maybe it was the extended break from doing this liveblog but this two-parter wasn’t as bad as I dreaded.
Supposedly, part of the impetus of the story was to do a last hurrah story for Yellow Claw and then shove him under some furniture because his yellow peril character concept was growing increasingly awkward.
After one more story in Marvel Fanfare with Cap, Yellow Claw was shelved for nearly three decades.
And man launches sterility gas missiles into space to form a giant claw to make it so that his successor can repopulate the Earth with a new, freedom hating breed of humanity is pretty great as far as comic book nonsense goes.
Although, in retrospect, I’m realizing that this was basically the same plan the Sentinels that kidnapped Scarlet Witch had.
Sterilize the planet with Wanda’s magical uterus and then replace humanity with a genetically engineered kind that could not mutate.
Comic books are weird.
Next time: Human Torch guest stars. Everything is on fire.
Follow @essential-avengers or like or reblog or send me questions or tell me I’m doing an okay job or do nothing. There are many choices available. But I would appreciate feedback.

Stuff I want to see in the Ducktales reboot:
1. Detective Mickey
in the comic Disney canon, Mickey Mouse isn’t just Mickey Mouse. He’s a private investigator who works closely with the police force and has Goofy as his sidekick. That does something very important, it gives Mickey something to do. In the cartoons, Mickey has always just sort of been an everyman. He had a snide cheeky nature in the original black and white shorts but that was slowly fased out as Goofy and Donald took over many of his duties leaving Mickey as kind of a blank and that’s why it’s said the writers at Disney could finish 5 Donald Duck shorts in the same time it took them to write just one Mickey story.
2. The Phantom Blot
Mostly a Mickey Mouse villain but also, unquestionably, the greatest villain in Duckburg. A genius inventor, schemer and of course he has only ever been unmasked ONCE. His quest for world domination makes him the biggest threat Duckburg has seen
3. Moby Duck
You gave us Feathry, so why not also give us Moby. If memory serves, He’s Donalds great uncle on his fathers side as opposed Scrooge who is his maternal uncle. In the new Ducktales canon, Moby could be the sailor who gave Donald his love for the sea.
4. Actual adaptations
New Ducktales is sorely missing something the original Ducktales had, and it’s direct adaptations of actual Barks stories. You don’t even have to leave it at Barks, experiment! Give us Marco Rota, Sune Troelstrup, Vicar, Don Rosa or Romano Scarpa! There’s such a wealth of characters and stories to pick from!
5. Move Donald out of McDuck manor
Any comic fan doesn’t recognize this quo with Donald living on a houseboat or even in McDuck Manor. Give us 1313 Webfoot Street and the dog and neighbor that comes with it
6. Do that one thing Disney never did
You know exactly what I mean, there’s a blind spot next to Della on the McDuck family tree. Fill it.
7. The Duck Avenger
I don’t even know where to start, you familiar with Darkwing Duck? You ever wonder why they never did that with Donald? Well they did, and it’s great. You guys already introduced Gladstone, you have all the info you need. Give us the Duck Avenger.

Fixing Maximum Ride
A while back I wrote out my description of how I would have wanted the Maximum Ride series to go. There are elements I like. I think it has a kind of campy charm. However, I also think more editing would have really, really helped.
BOOK 1
I always felt like the first book glossed over its major twist—one that the film made explicit. Not only is Jeb alive, but the Flock never escaped. They have been inside a fishbowl this whole time. Their house, their food supply, their clothes – all from the School. And then the School decided to run a test by taking Angel away and seeing how the Flock responded.
So the first part of the book is them living in isolated freedom. The Erasers take Angel and the others set out to rescue her . . . but then they all end up captured and learn that they were never free at all.
I will make a criticism that others have made before me – it is too easy for the Flock to escape the School. And the second part of the book serves no plot purpose. They escape the School, they go meandering around New York, and then they go back into a different School for the climax. There is nothing significant in between.
So follow the movie’s lead and cut that out entirely. The second half of the book is them escaping the School for real, on their own, using all the techniques they learned while searching for Angel. Angel pitches in with the powers she’s been learning to use during the experiments. Along the way, Max gets the chance to steal some papers with data on the Flock’s parents. They free the other experiments (one being Total) and fight their way out. Along the way, Max is forced to fight Ari to the death, and she flees with Jeb yelling after her that Ari was her brother . . . because I liked that ending.
The Flock recuperates outside. Most of the other experiments run off, even though the Flock tries to keep them together (in the original book, this scene was tantamount to criminal negligence). Over the course of the book, the Flock has learned not only to work as a unit, but that there is good in the world and people they can trust, like Dr. Martinez. The only other experiment to stay with them is Total, because fine, let’s have the dog. Now with more information on their origins, they set out in hopes of finding their parents.
BOOK 2
I actually don’t have much problem with the beginning of this book. The Flock’s attacked by the Erasers, led by a resurrected Ari, and Fang is mortally wounded. They all wind up at a public hospital. This FBI agent named Anne sweeps in, gets them all out of the hospital, and takes them to an idyllic ranch. They go to a swanky private school and experience normal life. It’s all too good to be true. Max is suspicious of Anne—something doesn’t add up about this place. And Iggy and Gazzy, who instantly get into trouble at school, stumble across some weird occurrences.
But meanwhile, Max and Fang are investigating their parents. Everything’s a dead end, but finally they find Iggy’s parents. So Iggy goes to stay with his parents. Anne freaks out, because she doesn’t know where he is. And as it turns out, Anne was an Itex agent all along. Itex found out about the hospital and used it to re-ensnare the Flock. The beautiful ranch house is one of their locations. The private school is a place where they run experiments on kids.
I’d probably follow the Marvel comic and have the principal call Max into his office, where School scientists are waiting. Itex is fed up with Anne, who has been doing nothing but pamper the Flock and just lost one of them. Learning the truth, the Flock flees as the private school falls into chaos.
As for Iggy: his parents are not trying to turn him into a sideshow freak. They are rightly horrified by what’s happened to him, and they go to the media not to make money off him, but to reveal the truth about Itex. However, the School has always been very careful to make sure the Flock was terrified of trusting adults and especially the media. Worldwide attention is bad for the School, not for the Flock. But the kids haven’t figured that out yet, so Iggy flies away to rejoin the Flock.
After that the story kind of meanders. I would not have them go to Disney World. Patterson seems to forget very frequently that these are homeless children with no source of income. They’re not buying new outfits or waltzing through the front gate of the Magic Kingdom.
However, I would keep Max’s growing paranoia, her urge to get the chip out of her arm. I would also keep Ari’s character development.
I’m not sure about the clone.
BOOK 3
Fang and Max can go back to Dr. Martinez – the one person they trust – to get Max’s chip taken out. However, this does nothing to help them and they find that the rest of the Flock has been recaptured by the School while they were gone. When they go to rescue them, they get captured too.
One thing that has to go is the “reveal” that “it was all a dream.” That little plot detour instantly killed my suspension of disbelief and the series was never the same.
Anyway, they escape the School again, and this time Ari comes along. However, Max and Fang fight so much over this that they break up the Flock. Fang takes Gazzy and Iggy to California; all this time he’s been blogging and he’s realized that this is the way to hurt Itex the most, so he’s going to the news. Meanwhile, Max and everyone else go to Europe. They’re heading for the source of all this. They get captured but learn all the information they need in the process. Itex is preparing for their final plan to decimate the world’s population, and people are there from all over the world to buy their weapons. Max’s mini-flock leads a rebellion among the experiments (no “Angel just brainwashes everyone into rebellion,” please).
Meanwhile, Fang’s flock does not instantly give up on the media because the security guards won’t let them in and Fang randomly forgets that he can just show them his wings. (This is even brought up IN TEXT.) And no, Fang does not magically send an email to “every kid in the world.” Instead, Fang’s flock gets on the news and reveals the truth about Itex. Kids can still organize many of the protests at Itex, but it will not be as ludicrous as what happens in the book. Pro tip: picketing a business for one afternoon will not make the business instantly collapse. And breaking in and vandalizing stuff is probably not going to end well for you.
Otherwise, the ending goes about the way Patterson wrote it – except that Dr. Martinez is not Max’s biological mother. I just can’t justify how contrived that is. However, she is still Max’s mom and offers the Flock a home at the end. Let her be the character she was originally established to be. And Max can still be Latina. Her biological mother can just be a random scientist who, like Jeb, contributed genetic material.
AFTER BOOK 3
The first three books have flaws, but at their core is a good story. All they need is some decent editing. The next six books present more of a problem.
Book 3 wrapped up nearly every major plot thread. It was a natural ending for the series. But for some reason (money) Patterson kept it going. The result is a group of books with no purpose, where the characters just kind of meander around and sometimes there’s a threat to the environment and I guess they’re superheroes.
This point in the series is where we get into blatant wish fulfilment. The Flock is better than everyone else ever. They live on their own and don’t need any grownups – the grownups build them a house where they can live on their own and do whatever they want. They go to school only if they feel like it. There’s a random eccentric billionaire who never shows up but gives them all the money they want – I’m not making that up.
But there were so many directions that just died.
Where are the Flock’s parents? Max has Dr. Martinez so we don’t care.
What happened to the Flock’s clones? Max’s clone shows up so we don’t care.
Who was the Voice? It’s Max’s dad—no, wait, we don’t know anymore.
Have Dr. Martinez work on adopting the Flock. Some of their parents surface—in some cases, the parents who sold them—and try to get close to them. Iggy’s parents are OK and can come to some arrangement with Dr. Martinez. They move close by so the Flock can be together.
I think Patterson was bored with the parents plot because he’d done it in The Lake House—but the parents don’t all need to be evil hags or self-serving boors! They can be decent people!
Show all the evil scientists we love to hate being convicted for their crimes. The Director, Anne Walker, that guy with the goofy accent. Show the Flock having to testify at their trials. Maybe show some of the bad guys going free on lack of evidence.
Show what happens to all the other mutant experiments. Show the Flock spending time with them, wherever they are. They got written off in one line in The Final Warning – I think we’re meant to assume they all went to the Lerner School for Gifted Children or whatever, which was never mentioned again. The next time they showed up was on the private Paradise island.
Show the Flock trying to start normal lives, for real this time. The media wants to see more of them. There are movie deals and licensing offers, but they try to stay far away from that. (This was another canon dead end I’d want to turn into an actual plotline.)
Maybe they struggle with public school (it’s canon that they do not fit in well and make people uncomfortable), so Dr. Martinez tries homeschooling and tutoring. Use Patterson’s unfinished plot threads for Nudge. Unlike the others, Nudge thrives at public school and starts making friends. Max has trouble relating to this little sister who is developing her own interests that don’t coincide with hers, and who seems to be drifting away. Max might not be homeless, starving or on the run anymore, but she’s also lost the control and freedom she had, and it feels like her family might drift apart. She was forced to become an adult way too early and now she feels forced back into the kid role.
Okay, so that’s not quite the action-thriller angle that the books normally take. So maybe we can add in more villains and save-the-world drama.
The later books get very episodic, with one-book villains who are never heard from again, as Patterson and ghostwriters try desperately to keep the series going with random ideas. Eventually, in FANG, Dr. Gunther-Hagen moseys in to set up the love triangle but seems like another one-off villain. In ANGEL the Doomsday Group show up and they seem to be our main antagonists for the remaining series - until Nevermore when a giant meteor kills everyone. And then Maximum Ride Forever reveals that Dr. Gunther-Hagen was the main villain all along.
The only real uniting “plotline” that shows up in these books is that the world is going to end and Max is supposed to save it. I don’t think they ever explain how the world is going to end (until after it’s already ended), let alone how she’s supposed to stop it. Dr. Gunther-Hagen’s plan seems to be “have mutants repopulate the earth with Max as their queen” for . . . some reason.
Seriously, what was Jeb originally planning?
Scientist: Have we come up with a way to save the world yet?
Jeb: Yes. Here’s our 100% foolproof solution.
Scientist: That’s an infant. How is she going to stop a giant death-meteor hurtling towards earth?
Jeb: She’s part bird.
Scientist: … Brilliant!
I originally thought he was trying to take down Itex from the inside – which they accomplished in the third book - but his motivations become increasingly confusing with the last few installments in the series.
Honestly, I would not go near the giant meteor plot with a ten-foot pole. That was just spitting in the readers’ faces, and Maximum Ride Forever could only function as a bandaid. I thought that book was actually decent, but it was dealing with the aftermath of a truly terrible writing decision. Also, please no pregnant teenage Max. Patterson already did that in The Lake House and it was gross. He had two pregnant teenagers in Cradle and All (unrelated to this series) and it was REALLY gross.
Back to my real-world-boring-consequences plot: Dr. Gunther-Hagen shows up as this guy who had “connections” to Itex, but nobody can actually prove he was involved, and he explains he had no idea about all the evil science stuff, and he’s donating money to help these poor exploited mutant children . . . in fact he even got one named Dylan who he’s raising as his son. And hey, Dylan should hang out with the Flock, they can be friends! Maybe more than friends, huh, Max?
Gunther-Hagen can replace the random billionaire as the Flock’s benefactor. They’re not fully comfortable with that, but they’re a little busy because Itex folks keep popping up under new names, like the Uber-Director (who needs a name change) and Mr. Chu (ughhh) and the Doomsday Group. The books follow the Flock fighting these people off and trying to figure out where they keep coming from.
If there has to be an army of Ari clones, maybe one of them could have a change of heart. I want something more than just “Ari’s back and he’s evil again and there’s a lot of him – go fight.” His arc was my favorite part of the first three books. Justice for Ari!
In the final book, it turns out that Gunther-Hagen was the mastermind all along. He is still orchestrating Itex’s plan to wipe out half the population. They were planning to do that through a plague bioweapon (yes, that was part of the canon plot), so the Flock has to fight and stop them. Dylan turns against his father and joins the Flock. Boom, you’ve got an overarching plot with a conclusion that makes sense.
And that’s how I, personally, would fix Maximum Ride.
In addition, here’s one person’s rewrite of the first book that I thought was good: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11257310/1/Try-Not-to-Scream

Algernon Luc Perreault, Baron of Haunted Dolls
(this is my first time doing this specific character creation dance and i’ve obviously not ever played nobilis so i’m open to critique/workshopping and also truly can’t believe i’ve done this.)
In their mortal existence Luc was a banker, moderately well off, with an almost aggressively mundane life. Since being taken under the metaphorical wing of The Longest Furby, relatively recently, they’ve assumed the responsibility of caring for the bizarre wildlife of her Chancel, the Uncanny Valley; peeled the skin off their own hands; and generally been unimpressed with divine life. Still, they have acquired a certain unflappability; they’re exasperated by new and bizarre events, but rarely actually disturbed, not for long.
Haunted Dolls...
...inspire confusion, fear, and alarm (2)
...resemble living things, but aren’t (2)
...have their actual danger exaggerated (2)
...are collector’s items (1)
Of course I mean this Estate quite broadly, as “any doll-like or stuffed-animal-like object that’s at least a little bit uncanny valley” - taxidermy, figurines, etc. included; and it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the ghostly type of haunting, I just needed a pithy summation and I listen to just enough MBMBAM to not let this opportunity go.
Luc has a lot more Persona than Domain, but they do have The Sovereign’s Gift (Lesser Animation of Haunted Dolls) and can therefore bring mundane dolls and toys to life, granting them unsettling, jerky movement. If I understand the rules (which I don’t) the dolls can then use Luc’s Shine to do stuff for their creator’s sake, which makes them actually kind of impressive. Whenever possible, Luc brings the new creature back to the Uncanny Valley and lets it join the growing population of slightly horrifying living toys there.
The Uncanny Valley
Everything stretches farther than you’d think.
Gardens will be fruitful.
If it looks like a living creature, it can move and speak.
The abandoned have a place here.
Your imperfections are loved.
The Longest Furby’s Chancel, the Uncanny Valley, is a deep crevice, folded in on itself such that it passes outside the mundane world’s notice. It is accessible from almost everywhere if one knows the right mental trick; it involves a sort of gradual approach to any mundane, constructed doorway, but not actually going inside. The Chancel itself is bursting with lush growth, cultivated gardens, and beautiful babbling streams, and it’s populated almost entirely by living dolls - mostly Furbies and things that resemble Furbies, but not entirely. Besides the better-known mechanical kind, several species of organic Furbylike creature exist here, blending mammalian and avian traits to various degrees; I hope the largest are maybe the size of a medium dog, because anything larger starts distressing me a little to think about, but you never know.
The place has sort of an Island of Misfit Toys vibe, because most of the residents have been deliberately modified, or got broken once and then mended, or were always kind of unsettling. It’s got a little bit of benign Hell-nature to it, I suppose, in its acceptance of oddballs and rejected things. Between the gardens, the guarantee of finding a place, and the ability to metaphorically and literally stretch their supplies, it’s a very hospitable spot, for people able to look past the mild creepiness of their hosts.
Attributes
Aspect 0
Domain 1
Persona 4
Treasure 2
with 8 MP each. Nothing too fancy; I think they prefer to keep out of actual conflicts, and bluff their way out of bad situations with Persona tricks, amping up their own creepiness and/or how dangerous other people perceive them to be.
Their primary Treasure is a pair of magically-imbued elbow-length soft leather gloves made of their own skin, which hasn’t been replaced; Luc just walks around with clean, bare skeleton hands. It’s fine. Both the gloves and the hands are kind of super gross if you think about it too hard but it’s fine.
The gloves are capable of animating, floating around, and doing simple tasks autonomously, or more complex ones under telepathic mental direction, without anyone actually putting hands in them (I don’t know if I need to ...spend something, somewhere, to give it this ability, or if I get to just declare it?). Mostly they are left behind in the Uncanny Valley and are used for the benefit of all the residents who don’t have proper hands, including The Longest Furby herself. The +1 Tool bonus applies when they’re used for sewing repairs.
Bonds/Afflictions
Affliction: I am always dignified. (3)
Affliction: I can peel the skin off anything. (2)
Bond: My hands are bare and skeletal. (2)
Bond: I’m still connected to my old skin. (Treasure bond) (2)
Bond: I take care of small creatures. (2)
Bond: I always have the perfect outfit. (1)
Bond: I take my Imperator’s commands seriously, even the goofy ones. (1)
... I still have a couple points to allocate but I’ve run dry on ideas; maybe they have a mundane Furby or Furbyesque critter as another Treasure? I guess so. Like a weird stumpy little gryphon familiar. That’s cute, and would probably annoy them, so yes.
Passions/Skills
I’m going super out of order with these, aren’t I? Sorry. Mostly it’s that I’m not confident about this bit in particular, at all, but I guess it’s fine.
Passion: I want an uneventful life. (3)
Passion: A good outfit gives me confidence. (2)
Skill: Accountant (2)
Skill: Express sincere emotion (-1)
Cool (1)
Shine (4) (from Persona)
Why do I keep making accountant OCs? Listen, if I ever figure it out I’ll let you know. Something in my hindbrain insists that Luc used to work for a bank and I’m just rolling with it. Are all the skills and bonds relating to outfits and fashion and dignity overlapping too much? Also a mystery to me. Let me know.
Lifepath
As above, their Estate is Haunted Dolls. Their Keys are Gorse (Something In Thrall) and Oak (Something that Hasn’t Changed.)
Gorse Heart: Held In Thrall
This Furby nonsense.
Disturbing, but I can’t look away.
Nothing exciting to go back to.
I have to figure Her out.
There has to be meaning to this.
Gorse Shadow: Entangled with my Enemy
I can’t let go.
I’m weak.
Longfurby keeps introducing me to her weird friends.
This Key is strengthened by:
An Estate that’s ‘something you can point to’ (i.e., dolls. Straightforward!)
a Humble mortal life (they were nobody special and preferred it that way.)
A connection to the Cammora (I don’t know what sort of connection! Even the merest shadow of the concept amuses me, though. OOC, a couple folks in the fandom have accused The Longest Furby of being a Mimic or an Actual; maybe she’s discreetly under investigation in-universe too and the Cammora have approached Luc?)
Song of the Light (I’m not suuuuure about this one but I’m not sure which of the other Affiliations it’d be, either. I don’t think they’re independent enough for for rejecting an allegiance altogether, or for the Wild. There’s arguments that could be made for all four of the others, so I just went with the one that strengthened their Key... I guess it’d make sense that, ultimately, they’d favor humanity over everything else, even as they feel increasingly disconnected from it (see below). I don’t know if it’s possible to change this later but maybe as they progress along their character arc they’ll get more sympathy for the weird stuff and start listening to Hell instead?)
and weakened by:
a connection to Aliens (all the weird Furbies and Furby-adjacent creatures Luc keeps befriending with deep reluctance, from the Imperator-level ones all the way down to the mundane ones they animate with their own powers. A quirk/blind spot is that they don’t really differentiate between a mechanical, magically animated Furby that used to be totally inanimate and the ‘natural’ ‘’’organic’’’ ones native to the Uncanny Valley.)
Oak Heart: My Identity
Sensible and distinguished.
Calming influence.
Exasperated but unfazed by strange events.
Former banker.
Oak Shadow: Crisis
Privately, I’m deeply unsettled by the changes in my life.
This Key is strengthened by:
More than anything else, they are Something Cool (they’re nothing grandiose, nothing especially weird in and of themself, not deeply passionate - they just roll with the punches a little Too calmly.)
An Estate that represents the dark side of the human experience (to be pretentious a moment: not really the uncanny qualities of the dolls themselves, but the judgement we collectively render on things that don’t fit an accepted mold. does that work...)
a Humble mortal life (again)
and weakened by:
the Legacy of their humble life is Alienation (Luc doesn’t feel especially connected to humanity anymore - per Song of the Light they still care about humans, in the abstract, but, for example, they don’t have strong ties to their mortal family (no outright falling-out, I don’t think, just drifted away). They can’t get that emotional connection going, and that freaks them out if they think too hard about it. They’re trying to think of themself as above all this change and upheaval in their life, and fundamentally unchanged as a person, and outwardly sure, maybe, but underneath that they’re really kind of not.)
This is so fucking much. This game is wild. Technically I think I should be writing Domain and Persona difficulty charts - let’s be real, I probably will - and probably some other little details, but I’m leaving it here for right now! I was going to put a disclaimer on this like “I’m not taking this too seriously, I don’t have plans to use it in a game or anything,” and I don’t, but listen, people keep saying they want to incorporate Longfurby into their games. I am helpless before this tide, and if anyone does in fact put their money where their mouth is on this one, you’re certainly welcome to include Mx. Perreault as well, if she needs Powers.
All credit for actually making the original Longfurby and bringing her into our physical world rests with @furbyfuzz, who is wonderful and excellent.

Beyond My Pants and Into My Mind (An Aoyama x Everyone Concept)
You know what I’m tired of? I’m tired of reading the same awesome-ass fics revolving solely around Bakugou and Deku. So y’know what? I’m gonna make one revolving solely around twinkling boi because why not? >u>
NSFW Warning- not for the children or the faint of heart. Loads and loads of humor and sex with some wholesome content sprinkled in. Prepare to laugh your asses off. (This is a concept for a fic I may or may not write, so enjoy >u>)
Aoyama runs sex blog, also helps people with their problems
He realizes that some of them are actually his classmates after a conversation in the locker room
Insert online conversation with Deku (mild flirting). Reveals he’s crushing on Uraraka. Aww.
He feels bad about knowing their private lives but continues the blog after seeing how happy they are
Insert online conversation with Kouda
Holds a live show, people donate- sexy stuff ensues (with Bakuhoe going into maximum sadist overdrive)
Comes in the next day, normal day though his classmates are talking more openly about meeting V one day. Bakugou notices Aoyama’s apprehension and Kouda develops a crush
More sexy stuff that night/online sexting with Bakugou (reveals that Bakuhoe got a crush too holy shiet)
Bakugou confronts Aoyama after school. French boi gets scared and runs off, but expodikills corners him in the locker room and threatens to blow him up.
Aoyama reveals that he is V. Bakuhoe smashes his boiholes into smithereens. (did I mention frenchboi’s a virgin?) “I knew those moans sounded familiar.” Bakuhoe ensures his secret his safe.
Frenchboi got a limp, but he Gucci and goes to train anyway. Still gets ignored tho.
Insert online convo with Uraraka. Thinks V is sweet and wants to meet up. Oh no, what about Deku?
Receives gifts in the mail.
Inserts another online convo with Kouda. What a cutie, no way he could corrupt this innocent soul. Sends a tasteful nude.
Kouda wants to lose his virginity. Aoyama wants to help him, but that might give him away.
Fuck it, meets up and sleeps with Kouda. Disney princess is surprised that its him and is conflicted. Does it anyway. Hes happy. Ensures his secret is safe.
Receives message from Bakuhoe that night. He wants sum fuck. Give it to him.
Uraraka talks to girls about V. the girls are interested now. Time for some kitty cat.
Deku’s upset. His crush likes his advisor and now he refuses to visit the blog. Frenchboi’s hurt- that’s his bff
Convinces him to be honest with V and tell him whats up.
Insert online convo with Deku. Very heartwarming and Deku builds encouragement
V lets Uraraka down gently- she understands.
Frenchboi accidently spilling tea. Iida gets suspicious.
Insert convo with Iida. Turns out glasses boi got a thing for traps. Sends some tasteful nudes. Convo’s kind of hot. Gets to see iida’s dick.
Glasses boi drops suspicion for now. No way in hell frenchboi’s that damn good at sexting.
Blog is getting more popular within the school. Aoyama’s kinda scared.
Kouda hits him up. Wants sum fuck. Give it to him.
Insert convo from Mina. Very fun sexter, 10/10 will do again. Very pushy with finding out who V is.
Does another live show- has a huger audience. Ends with him writhing on the floor like mad.
Starts getting messages in the day time. Wtf, this isn’t his entire life… is it?
Mina blatantly asks Aoyama if he’s V in private.
“Why you ask?”
“Well, yours and his texting style is very similar.”
FUCK.
Mina takes his silence as a yes. Makes him eat her poom-poom for forgiveness. Also rides his dick. Ensures his secret is safe.
Deku and Uraraka is dating… HOORAY!
Receives more gifts. Also receives a shitload of messages he can’t keep up with.
Insert convo from Deku. Kinda wants to know who V really is too.
*sigh*
Admits that he is V.
Broccoli child wants a threeway.
……with Uraraka right?
“yes.”
Plans a threeway. Gets fucked in the ass and fucks zero gravity. Both ensures his secret his safe.
Iida’s suspicion arises again after seeing how the three interacts the next day.
Bakugou hits him up.
Another buttfuck session?
“No, I want your mouth this time.”
Uses frenchboi’s mouth like his personal fleshlight.
Insert convo from Kirishima. Very goofy and fun to sext. 10/10.
“Let’s meet!”
Jfc.
Is curious about his dickgame, so he can’t say no.
“You might be either surprised, disappointed, or both.”
“It’s cool, dude. You have such a cute body anyway, I’m sure you can’t be that bad.”
Fuck it.
Meets up with hard boi. Hard boi gets flustered.
“A-Aoyama?! I didn’t think you had it in you!”
Has sex.
Bakugou shows up.
Gets double-fucked.
Mina shows up.
Orgy.
Its one huge Aoyama-fest and frenchboi’s excited but terrified.
Is invited to fuck the bakusquad at any time now.
Frenchboi is exhausted and gives the blog a break.
A week goes by and his message board is in shambles.
Assures his audience that he still alive. Posts a video.
Insert convo with Momo. Shes ashamed she even came on here but V assures she is okay. Another heartwarming convo reveals that she’s not confident in herself. V makes her feel better. Momo develops a crush.
Those that know his secret starts putting a bit of respeckt on frenchboi’s name.
Kouda asks Aoyama out on a date. Kinda wants to say no but knows how much encouragement he had to muster to do it, so says yes.
Momo talks about meeting V.
“He’s so cute, I can imagine what it’d be like to meet him~.”
Mina and Uraraka burst into fits of giggles.
Insert convo with Todoroki. Very blunt and straight to the point, kind of a boring texter tbh. Innuendos seem to go right over his head. Manages to get him out his shell with a tasteful nude.
He likes that. Sends one right back. Frenchboi gets a boner. The talk is vanilla with a splash of cinnamon. Meh, 7/10. Todoroki admits he hasn’t done this before. How adorable.
More talk of V in the school. Its becoming a hot topic now. Teachers and staff are catching on.
Receives loads of gifts and money in the mail. Cant fit them all in his room so has to call his parents to store them in his room there. Parents are suspicious but doesn’t care enough to ask. Literally the source of his personal issues.
Insert convo with Tokoyami. Very emotionally charged conversation. Goth birb reveals he is depressed and has major self-esteem issues. So does V. The blog really is his life. V gives him words of encouragement. Tokoyami gracefully accepts and thanks him. Frenchboi realizes that Tokoyami’s actually… kinda cute? Interest in him peaks.
DATE WITH KOUDA. Goes to a petting zoo of course. Aoyama cant get the animals to come around him on his own, so Kouda uses his quirk to make it easier. Very, very sweet. Aoyama’s expecting to have to sleep with him, but Kouda’s alright with just a peck. Doesn’t promise too much, but Kouda really is a sweet, sweet boy.
Explodidicks shows up again. He’s jelly sandwich that frenchboi went on a date with Disney princess.
“but you liked V, not me?”
“STFU SPARKLE BITCH!”
Bakuhoe cant bring himself to ask him out, so he storms off like a baby bitch.
Frenchboi sees Tokoyami the next day, but friendship meter isn’t high enough to talk to him without giving himself away. Fuck.
Messages Tokoyami. Goth birb is surprised he messaged him first. Heartwarming convo leads to some hot stuff. Convinces goth birb to send a tasteful nude after some time. V compliments him like mad and flusters the birb.
More talk about V during the day. Most of the 1-A class are taking about how wonderful he is while others are skeptical. “Why just Class 1-A, hmm?”
Deku asks Aoyama about the blog in private. (Shouji overhears)
“Hey, how long do you plan on keeping this running? Aren’t you afraid you might be hurting your chances of positive press when becoming a pro hero?”
That;s a good question, but the answer isn’t so simple.
“Ne t’en fais pas, Deku-kun. I’ll be fine~”
No. be very worried.
Teachers and staff are beginning to believe the traitor is behind the blog and that its using it to find out personal information about the staff and students. Proceed investigation.
Shouji confronts Aoyama.
“so you’re V?”
Frenchboi admits it.
Tentacles ensures his secret his safe. “I’m just glad you’re helping Tokoyami out. But he’s gonna have to know who you are one day.”
Moral dilemma arises.
Gets message from Mina.
Bakusquad orgy? Bakusquad orgy.
Goes to Bakusquad orgy. Gets fucked by everyone there.
Bakugou gets in his feelings and starts getting possessive of frenchboi. Very aggressive with his love but will take versus getting Thanos’d.
Next day, Bakuhoe lowkey claiming croissant. Gets aggressive with Kouda. Kouda backs off and stops talking to frenchboi for a while. Poor thing…
Aoyama faces his fears and confronts bakuhoe for being a bakubitch.
Bakubitch is offended. Threatens to blow up frenchboi but Iida intervenes.
“This is none of your fucking business!”
Fight almost breaks out, but Aizawa intervenes. All three of them get suspended.
Iida contacts Aoyama during suspension. Asks what his relationship is between him and Bakugou.
Admits they’ve banged more than a few times. Accidently slips that they’ve spoken online beforehand.
“So, you’re V?”
“Oui.”
“AHA! I knew it!”
“Don’t tell anyone, okay?”
“Your secret is safe with me, Aoyama-san!”
Iida’s secretly conflicted that he sent a dick pic and fapped to Aoyama, ngl.
Aoyama’s curious about Iida’s dick game, so he invites him over to his room for some play.
Glasses boi comes by, finds Croissant poised up in a school girl outfit looking cute af.
Hot sex ensues. Bakugou overhears it in passing.
Aoyama messages Kouda. Kouda responds. Says he really likes him but can’t do it anymore. Frenchboi feels horrible but won’t stop him.
Insert convo with Tokoyami. Lots and lots of flirting. Aoyama’s dying for Toko to ask about his identity, but the birb respects his anonymity way too much. Lets it ride. Sends pics to each other.
Suspension over.
Staff is pulling students one by one to question their relations to V. Aizawa makes an official announcement to be wary of V. Aoyama wants to fucking die.
Insert convo with Momo. Light flirting, confesses to V that she’s been thinking about him and wants to meet. Tells him that her school thinks he’s dangerous. V assures that he isn’t.
Insert convo with Deku. Deku’s concerned about frenchboi’s well-being and suggests he comes clean. Aoyama’s not ready to.
Insert convo with Bakugou.
Oh lord.
“So you’re gonna go and fuck Sonic the Nerdhog now!?”
“Bakugou, if you like me, just ask me out.”
“…”
Bakugou logs off for the night.
Insert convo from Tsuyu.
“Aoyama, I know its you, but I won’t rat you out.”
“Oh… okay, thank you? But why contact me from here?”
“Wellllllllll….”
Meets up with Tsuyu. Reveals that its spring and this is the time when her body’s ready to mate. Knew that Aoyama was an easy target. Take that how you will.
Oh yeah, frogs get busy in the spring.
Has sex.
+1 new fuckbuddy
Croissant goes to bed and realizes he’s been whoring himself like mad. Evaluates his life choices and realizes he’s literally addicted to the attention. Also realizes that his shit’s gonna slide out of his ass like butter if he doesn’t take it easy.
Declines offer for another Bakusquad orgy and gives the blog a rest for a while.
1-A is being investigated now. Tailman, Sugar Rush, Mineta, and Croissant are suspects.
Insert convo from Ojiro.
“Hey dude, I know this blog means a lot to you, but if you can show up in person and get these guys off our backs that’d mean a lot to us. Thanks~”
Damn… that’s one person that cannot know about his identity. Tells him he’s not in the country.
Is interested in Ojiro’s peen ngl. He got that martial artist bod afterall.
Coaxes tailboy into a conversation. Tailboy… aint really with the gay shit. Is a lot like Todoroki, but doesn’t even try to talk dirty. Jeez, is he really all that straight? 0/10
Sends a tasteful nude. Tries to get him to at least send his abs. Something.
“Fine.” Whatever it takes to get the staff from checking his internet history.
Send a pic of his torso, his pants are kinda low. OOF. DAT V LINE.
Talks a little bit more, then logs off.
Depression starts to settle in. His classmates are noticing him, but not for the right reasons. Deku notices. Iida notices. Uraraka notices. Tokoyami grows suspicious from his non-attentionwhoring ways.
Tokoyami approaches Aoyama for the first time.
Oh god, his palms are sweaty.
Knees weak, arms heavy… Mom’s spaghetti.
“Are you alright?”
“Oui, I’m okay.
“Are you sure? You don’t seem like yourself. I am a bit concerned.”
Aoyama comes clean. Tokoyami is surprised, but isn’t upset.
Spends the day comforting Aoyama. Even brings by moshi icecream. Very wholesome. Nothing flirty or anything, just bro stuff.
Toko compliments Aoyama on his ability to talk to people and suggests applying that offline as well- he’d be far more liked that way.
Frenchboi reveals that he initially made a regular blog to make friends because he often felt lonely at Yuuei but resorted to sex because of the lack of attention. Deku is his only legitimate friend here.
“Then let’s be friends as well.”
Aoyama cries. Hard. Very emotional moment.
He accepts it.
Aoyama writes on his blog that he’s not gonna be too active. People aren’t very happy, but they accept.
The folks in the know ask about his post last night. Keeps it cute and says he’s gonna take it easy for a bit. Deku and Toko smiles.
The staff of investigation notices the post and begins narrowing down the suspects.
Bakugou pulls Aoyama aside. He’s calm and collected- asks him if he’s okay.
Frenchboi nods, Bakuboi finally asks him on a date. He hesitantly accepts. Not sure why he’s so fixated on him, but cool I guess.
(Insert Bakusquad cheesing in the background)
Kouda summons the courage to talk to Aoyama again and apologizes for leaving him hanging. Frenchboi forgives him and accepts his friendship.
+1 Friendship
DATE WITH BAKUGOU. Indoor rock climbing! How cool is that!? Frenchboi is scared shitless, but Explosionboi knows what he’s doing. Bakugou is mainly quiet the entire time but is pretty sweet in gaining Frenchboi’s trust with the harnesses. Deep conversation reveals that Bakugou doesn’t have many friends either. Apologizes for being so pushy and inconsiderate. Admits he doesn’t handle his emotions well. Aoyama reveals personal info about his blog and his loneliness.
“You’re a fucking weirdo tbh, but you have a lot of balls.”
His way of complimenting him, I guess? Also advises him to stop being so fucking slutty before his ass becomes Stargate… or else.
Ooh, the irony.
Doesn’t sleep together, sweet peck on the forehead tho.
Tokoyami and Deku checks up on him.
Insert messages from Bakusquad telling him how much Bakugou enjoyed today. Also thanks Aoyama for being a friend through V.
Bakuboi probs told them about his dilemma, that little shit. He still felt loved nonetheless. Very wholesome.
Frenchboi comes into class the next day and… actually gets greeted? He tears up.
Bakugou calls him a faggot.
Gets called into the office after school.
It’s time.
They question him about the blog and its contents.
He comes clean.
Aizawa wants to expel the shit out of him but he technically did nothing wrong, so he stays.
Firmly asks him to delete the blog. Gets reprimanded for running a damn sex blog while training to be a public defender.
They agree to keep it under wraps, but Aizawa orders Aoyama to apologize to the class.
He does.
There’s a mixture of disgust, shock, and wonder.
The end.
TL;DR: tfw the blog that you think is singlehandedly tearing down your school is just the creation of a lonely 16-year old.

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
Welcome to FiveThirtyEight’s weekly politics chat. The transcript below has been lightly edited.
micah (Micah Cohen, politics editor): Here’s my plan, if it works for everyone: The overarching question will be “Is James Comey’s book/publicity tour helping or hurting the case against President Trump?”
You can interpret “the case” however you want, but I mostly mean it politically.
To give the convo some structure, we’ll go through the six claims Comey makes that are highlighted in this BBC article and say whether each helps or hurts.
Ready?
perry (Perry Bacon Jr., senior writer): Sure.
natesilver (Nate Silver, editor in chief): Let’s go!
clare.malone (Clare Malone, senior political writer): Ready.
micah: Also, FiveThirtyEight Features Editor Chad Matlin is obsessed with the Comey story, so he’s lurking in this chat and is going to chime in occasionally.
chad: Point of order: I am obsessed with Comey as essentially a character out of a literary political thriller. He’s flawed in all sorts of ways that make him extremely compelling and unable to be plopped into a villain or hero bucket. He essentially admits that he has an ego and a devotion to integrity, which makes it very fascinating to try to tease out where one starts and the other stops.
clare.malone: Hubris!
I agree, Chad.
He is a character who has tangled thoughts on his own actions.
micah: No. 1:
“When asked if he considered Mr Trump fit to lead, the former FBI director said he did not believe claims about Mr Trump’s mental health, but did see him as ‘morally unfit’ to be president.”
Help or hurt?
clare.malone: Hurt.
natesilver:
clare.malone: I’m less concerned with whether Comey thinks Trump should be in office: We care more about Comey’s observations of his interactions with Trump — whether or not he thinks the president obstructed justice, etc. At least, I think we should care more about those.
micah: The media doesn’t seem to care more about that, Clare.
clare.malone: Well, like Comey, I am a morally superior force in the world, Micah.
I am SANCTIMONY embodied!
natesilver: Yeah, I don’t really give a fig about Comey’s view on Trump’s character, except to the extent it reflects proprietary knowledge that Comey has based on working with him. Instead, the assessments Comey makes about Trump in the ABC News interview seem very arm’s-length — as though he’s a political pundit.
perry: Helps. I think someone of Comey’s stature saying that the president is “morally unfit” is important. He is kind of echoing the Never Trump/John McCain/Jeff Flake view, which is not a hugely influential one, but it does have some influence, so it’s part of why Trump is fairly unpopular.
micah: DISAGREEMENT!!!!!
Clare and Nate, why do you think Comey-as-pundit hurts the case against Trump?
clare.malone: Because it distracts from the narrative that actually matters: Comey’s word against Trump’s on a number of occasions where it is a he said/he said.
I don’t think Comey needs to bolster his argument by being bombastic about Trump being unfit.
natesilver: Yeah, it lowers his stature. Comey’s authority comes from having had a seat at the table and having seen Trump up close and personal — not from having particularly good judgment, since there are all sorts of questions about his judgment.
clare.malone: He already has a good reputation as a man-of-the-law, truth-teller type.
natesilver: Right — I think a Chief Justice John Roberts “My job is to call balls and strikes and not to pitch or bat” demeanor would serve him better.
micah: I mean, let’s say Comey has the influence Perry mentions with ~3 percent of Americans — that’s something.
I just don’t know if there are really any neutral observers anymore.
OK, No. 2:
“Another portion of the interview handled the sacking of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in February 2017 for lying about contacts with the Russian ambassador in Washington. The former FBI head said Mr Trump had tried to pressure him into dropping any investigation into Mr Flynn. ‘I took it as a direction,’ he told Mr Stephanopoulos. ‘He’s — his words were, though, “I hope you can let it go”.’”
Help/hurt?
clare.malone: I think help. He’s being honest about the words, but also his interpretation of them — which presumably includes the way the president said it, the tone, emphasis, body language.
natesilver: Help, I guess … but wasn’t that news already public like six months ago?
clare.malone: It’s Comey being transparent about the interaction.
perry: I don’t know if this one matters as much, because this is basically what Comey said last year during the Senate hearing, as Nate said. He put the legal term “obstruction of justice” in there, but this is the core of what he told the Senate back last year.
natesilver: Yeah, I’m gonna say neutral because there’s no news there.
clare.malone: Repetition of relevant facts matters.
So, it doesn’t hurt.
natesilver: I’m a Bayesian, Clare, and it didn’t cause me to update my priors.
micah:
clare.malone: I don’t even want to dignify that one. Next!
micah: No. 3:
Comey said:
“I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook.”
So Comey is anti-impeachment.
Help/hurt?
clare.malone: I don’t actually know how I feel on this one. Sticking by my original logic of “No one should really care about Comey’s feelings about things outside what happened between him and the president,” I would have to say this hurts, since it’s a distraction from the main message.
On the other hand, I guess if he’s trying to look more even-handed and less “Never Trump,” then this is perhaps helpful?
For the sake of consistency, though, I’ll go with “hurt.”
natesilver: I don’t really think it helps or hurts the case against Trump per se.
micah: Let’s get a dose of Chad here.
chad: It hurts, since Comey’s dismissal is what the left uses as proof that there was obstruction of justice. So if the guy who got fired says his firing isn’t enough, then that perhaps has some weight. Since obstruction is fuzzier than Democrats would like.
natesilver: But I sorta agree with Comey that elections are an underrated remedy as compared with impeachment.
clare.malone: Nate, you have to pick one or the other! Help or hurt!?!?
Isn’t that how this game, goes!?
natesilver: Fine.
clare.malone: I love that song.
chad: Nate, please don’t make me reveal your karaoke song.
natesilver:
perry: Hurt. I thought Comey’s anti-impeachment stance was interesting. The legal case against Trump (obstruction of justice, etc.) and impeachment are not exactly the same thing. There is a broad coalition of anti-Trump people, from Never Trump Republicans to the Democrats who are already in favor of impeachment. If Democrats win the House, you’ll see the divide between the pro- and anti-impeachment forces. And I think Comey’s view here is important. He is a sharp Trump critic, but he’s warning against impeachment. We’ll likely see some Democrats outside of the party’s most liberal wing echo what he is saying: Let’s beat Trump in the election, not try to impeach him.
micah: So, I’ve largely resisted all the Comey character analysis and ranting about how he affected the election, but I have to say: I found the fact that Comey — the person who arguably threw the election to Trump — used the phrase “let the American people off the hook” pretty galling.
clare.malone: Why, Micah?
micah: Because he sends this letter days before the election that has a meaningful effect, and then sorta chastises the American people to basically “clean up their own mess” — at least, that’s how I heard/read it.
clare.malone: He’s right in some sense, that, say, Republicans nominated Trump.
perry: I think that was his goofy way of saying that the best way to get rid of an unfit president is through the electoral process. I don’t think he was really attacking the voters.
clare.malone: (I knew I was going to get the letter argument, but I do think that we should also remember Comey is probably a pretty disillusioned REPUBLICAN.)
micah: OK, yeah, I agree with him on the merits — elections > impeachment — but he’s not in the best position to tell voters what they should or shouldn’t do during an election.
Next:
“In the TV interview, Mr Comey said his belief that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential elections was a factor in how he handled the investigation into the Democrat candidate’s use of classified emails on a private server while she was the secretary of state. ‘I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump,’ Mr Comey said.”
natesilver:
clare.malone: Yeah, that’s a hurt.
That just makes his reasoning for his public statements look … sloppy. Because his whole thing has been, “I was acting by the letter of the law,” but obviously the heightened atmosphere of fall 2016 played a part in his ultimate decision.
natesilver: Throughout the ABC interview, Comey seems extremely preoccupied with appearances — both how he’ll be perceived and how the FBI will be perceived.
Yet he sorta concedes that what he’s doing is against Justice Department protocol.
clare.malone: Right.
natesilver: And paints himself as being in a no-win position.
But one nice thing about having protocol and rules and regulations is that they give you a good default answer in no-win situations.
micah: If I could give one piece of advice to the political left, it would be: Accuse everyone of bias against you. That strategy, which a portion of conservatives have used for decades, seems to have all kinds of political benefits.
clare.malone: I mean, the Bernie Sanders people got that memo.
(Not to dredge up old fights …)
(But bring ’em on, I guess.)
perry: This posture in the interview about the Clinton investigation helps the case against Trump in that it weakens the “investigate the investigation” crowd on the GOP side, who say the real crime was Clinton’s behavior, not Trump’s. I thought, with what Comey said about Clinton and former CIA Director David Petraeus, who resigned after a scandal in which he mishandled classified information, Comey exonerated Clinton a bit more publicly than he has before. He all but said, “I have seen real email/documents abuse, and Hillary Clinton didn’t do it, but Petraeus did.”
micah: A lot of this seems to come down to credibility to overcome partisanship. Perry, it seems like you think Comey has at least a dollop of that power?
natesilver: There are a lot of parallels between how Comey saw the various scandals and how the press covered them, including wanting to appear tough on Clinton so as to seem nonpartisan.
perry: I’m not sure if Comey or anyone can overcome partisanship. But I think the media is playing a huge role in the Russia investigation process and struggling with questions of telling this story in both an accurate way but also not being perceived as biased against Republicans and Trump. So an independent authority like Comey saying that Trump’s behavior was more questionable than Clinton’s could affect media coverage, if not the public at large.
clare.malone: Is Comey independent, though?
micah: I’m sorta moving in Perry’s direction a bit — if you follow the news super closely, I think Comey at this point reads as fully immersed in the political/partisan fight; he’s “anti-Trump.” But maybe if you’re only paying attention peripherally, “former FBI director” is what really comes through.
Like, resume-wise, Comey is as independent as they come, Clare.
clare.malone: But right now, in our present reality, is he independent?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
micah: He’s just not keeping up appearances.
natesilver: In the interview, he comes across as part of #TheResistance.
micah: Right.
chad: That says more about #TheResistance than Comey to me.
natesilver: Ehh … it’s not that interviewer George Stephanopoulos grudgingly coaxes answers out of him. Comey seems pretty eager to volunteer his opinions on Trump.
chad: Is Comey playing too much on Trump’s turf, given the personal observations and attacks? Does that weaken his argument? Or strengthen it because those comments are more likely to provoke Trump?
perry: I don’t know that him talking about Trump’s hand size was useful. Or his face color or height. That part of it was problematic.
natesilver: The answer to Chad’s question is:
He’s definitely playing on Trump’s turf by making it personal.
clare.malone: Yeah, it’s not a good look.
chad: Before Trump was elected, Omarosa said all would have to bow down to Trump:
While that was overstated, I do think that there’s a kind of Trump vortex in which people feel they need to fight him on personal terms because his way of argument is so personal and ad hominem. Sen. Marco Rubio had this problem in the primaries, when he tried to fight Trump on Trump’s terms and lost.
natesilver: And Trump doesn’t hugely mind picking a fight with Comey if they both get muddied up.
clare.malone: Comey’s whole thing should be “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion,” and he’s not making himself above reproach.
perry: Here’s that Comey quote from the book:
“His face appeared slightly orange, with bright white half-moons under his eyes where I assumed he placed small tanning goggles, and impressively coifed, bright blond hair, which upon close inspection looked to be all his. …
“As he extended his hand, I made a mental note to check its size. It was smaller than mine, but did not seem unusually so.”
In the interview, Comey said: “His tie was too long, as it always is … he looked slightly orange up close.”
This all is kind of petty to me.
It’s like how I imagine Russell Westbrook talks about Kevin Durant in private.
clare.malone: Yeah, his editor did him a disservice there. Either in making him put that in or not taking it out.
chad: My thought: Trump is protected politically because of the base, so his detractors have to resort to attacking him personally. But personal attacks are priced in at this point — the people who want Trump out (whether by impeachment or voting) need to start chipping away politically to gain any traction, in my opinion.
micah: #analysis
Next:
“The former FBI boss writes that on at least four occasions Mr Trump raised the matter of unverified claims that he watched prostitutes urinate in a hotel suite during a 2013 Moscow trip.”
natesilver:
Or maybe that statement alone doesn’t hurt … but Comey seems quite interested in gossip about the pee tape, without really providing much substantive insight into it.
He seems too eager to speculate based on incomplete facts.
clare.malone: I honestly don’t know what to think about this one.
Because Comey offers us no further evidence that he knows whether or not this is likely. He just points out that the president was fixated on it.
But like … if someone told me Russians had Kompromat on me, I’d be fixated too!
perry: I’m confused by this one. I think this is the most outlandish detail of all of the Trump scandals. I have tended not to believe it. I’m not sure Comey should have discussed it unless he had real proof. But Jonathan Chait wrote an interesting column recently on why we should consider if the “pee tape” accusation is true. And Comey’s account makes me believe it more, if only because people don’t deny very outlandish things on four separate occasions.
natesilver: But shouldn’t Comey have more insight about this than Jonathan Chait? That’s not meant as an insult to Chait, it’s just that you’d think you’d have a lot more info as head of the FBI.
clare.malone: I mean, maybe some of the stuff he can’t share publicly?
I don’t know.
I think the Steele dossier stuff is a bit distracting, I agree with all of you.
natesilver: Maybe, but Comey can be a very precise communicator when he wants to be, such as in testimony before Congress — he knows how to hint when he has more information than he can reveal publicly.
In the pee-tape stuff, he sounds like a political pundit speculating and gossiping instead, based on having no particular inside info.
micah: I wonder how knowing much what Comey knows and can’t say would affect how we’re reading all this.
perry: I actually think one thing that helps the investigation is what he did know: Comey goes into some detail in the ABC News interview to both 1. say the Russia investigation started with campaign advisers Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, not the dossier and 2. that he considered Steele reliable based on previous work he had done.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein/FBI Director Christopher Wray/the DOJ/the FBI have hinted at this, but can’t say it as explicitly because they are in office now and it would piss off Trump and some of the Republicans in Congress.
natesilver: I guess I just think that Comey doesn’t stick to a just-the-facts posture and that undermines his position.
chad:
My favorite line from the Comey transcript so far: pic.twitter.com/ONadbSoWXz
— Jonathan Chait (@jonathanchait) April 16, 2018
natesilver: I found Comey’s Congressional testimony very compelling, by contrast, precisely because he avoided speculation.
micah: OK, so we already covered No. 6 (Comey’s comments about Trump’s hair and hands), so let’s end this with … AGGREGATE HELP/HURT.
Overall, is he helping or hurting the case against Trump?
clare.malone: Hurting his case, overall.
natesilver:
chad: Nate, I’m curious: I know that not sticking to a just-the-facts stance undermines his argument for you as a data-/evidence-based journalist. Do you think it does the same for the public at large?
clare.malone: It makes him into a more entrenched partisan figure I think, Chad.
micah: But, to Chad’s point, couldn’t we just as convincingly argue that Comey’s flare for trolling and the lurid detail he uses helps his case by getting it more attention?
natesilver: It’s hard to know for sure, but I think the stuff about being influenced by the polls is pretty damaging, as are the personal comments he makes about Trump’s appearance.
micah: Hmmmm … I’m starting to wonder whether we’re all being a bit too highfalutin. Donald Trump won the White House, after all.
perry: Nate made the right point: Comey’s testimony on the Hill. His Hill testimony was powerful, detailed, precise and impersonal. The book/interview stuff I have seen (I haven’t read the book) has not had that same discipline. Comey has the right to write a book that maybe is more interesting, and maybe “interesting” for him or his editor means going beyond what he said on Capitol Hill.
But some of the details are not enhancing his reputation for seriousness
natesilver: “Discipline” is a great word here. If nothing else, Comey had a reputation for being a disciplined guy. But he doesn’t come across as disciplined in this PR tour. Nor does his thinking around key decisions in 2016 seem to reflect especially disciplined thinking.
perry: Part of the issue is that Comey last year basically cast the president as a bully trying to obstruct justice in his notes that got published in The New York Times, and he got a special counsel appointed and then bashed Trump on the Hill in a heavily watched hearing.
He has already helped the anti-Trump case a great deal. Beyond having tapes of Trump saying the things that Comey purports he said, I would have a hard time thinking of how Comey could be a bigger part of the case against Trump.
He may have set a standard that is hard to top.
micah: Well, he could have tried to maintain his reputation for discipline and soberness.
Anyway … that’s a WRAP!!! Last bite goes to Chad!
clare.malone:
micah: Take the last piece of pizza, Chad.
chad: Really excited for Rosenstein’s book.

The Ten Best Halloween Anime
With Japan's love of sweets, ghost stories, and festivals, you might imagine that Halloween is a big deal there... and you'd be wrong. While appreciation for the holiday has increased somewhat over the last 10 years, you're still unlikely to see trick-or-treaters in Tokyo. Even so, thanks to cultural exchange, some traces of the Halloween aesthetic have mixed in with Japan's traditional love of the supernatural, leading to some memorable ghost episodes and horror series. I've scoured the Crunchyroll catalog, and found that these ten series best exemplify the spirit of Halloween. Enjoy them, if you dare!
10. Another
A cult favorite horror series from 2012 based on a novel by Yukito Ayatsuji, Another has more than its share of memorable and shocking moments. Tsutomu Mizushima (Shirobako), a director usually known for his skilled comic timing, takes a stab at horror with some amazingly offbeat results. Another focuses on hospitalized high school student Koichi Sakakibara, who runs across a mysterious eyepatched girl named Mei Misaki in the hospital elevator. When he transfers into school with Mei, however, Koichi discovers that none of the other students can see her. Initially slow and foreboding, Another climaxes in a frenzy of violence with twists you never see coming. Fans of J-horror and supernatural thrillers like The Omen and Final Destination will find a lot to enjoy here.
9. Actually, I Am
More of a treat than a trick, Actually, I Am (released as a manga under the title My Monster Secret) is a monstergirl romantic comedy with a heart of gold. The series stars Asahi Kuromine, a good natured student who can't keep a secret to save his life. When he accidentally sees his crush Yoko Shiragami spreading her wings after class, he discovers he'll have to keep her vampire identity a secret or risk her having to transfer out of school. With vampires, aliens, and wolfmen, Actually, I Am has the most traditional Halloween creatures of any monster harem to date, but it also has an adorably offbeat sense of humor and cast of characters. Try it to indulge your sweet tooth between scares.
8. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
A bittersweet love story based on a manga, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia tells the story of Teiichi Niiya, a transfer student who meets the beautiful Yuuko Kanoe, who just so happens to be a ghost haunting his school. She can't remember who she is or how she died, so Teiichi joins the Paranormal Investigations Club to solve the Seven Mysteries of Seikyou Private Academy in order to find clues to her past. With stunning visuals and a striking color palette from studio Silver Link, the sight of the Academy at dusk will enthrall you as much as the flirtatious Yuuko.
7. Blood Blockade Battlefront
While not an outright horror series, Blood Blockade Battlefront's city of Hellsalem's Lot contains such a variety of beasties that something will surely tickle your Halloween fancy. Based on a manga by Trigun's Yasuhiro Nightow and with the first season directed by Kyousogiga's Rie Matsumoto, Blood Blockade Battlefront is acclaimed for its gorgeous art direction, stunning animation, and touching story. Horror fans will appreciate the vampires, Lovecraftian monsters, and episode 5's deranged lovestruck murderess Aligura, who stars in what's surely one of the best anime episodes of all time.
6. Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up
The name is a mouthful and the show is an eyeful: Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up is from the naughty mind of Go Nagai, the influential creator of Cutey Honey, Devilman, and Mazinger Z. This 2011 series purposely evokes the throwback style of the 1970s, similar to current hit Osomatsu-san, and renders all of the nasty ghouls and bawdy humor just the way fans of the original remember them. Outrageous and yet somehow still innocent, Enma exemplifies the Halloween spirit in anime.
5. Occult Academy
A cult classic and personal favorite, Occult Academy was an early project of Sword Art Online and Erased's famed director Tomohiko Ito. Hardened skeptic Maya Kumashiro must return to her father's Waldstein Academy upon his death, and her friends are shocked to discover she no longer has a love for the supernatural. Apart from great comic timing and amusing anticlimaxes, Occult Academy strives to cultivate the atmosphere of goofy 1950s horror, with aliens, chupacabras, mothmen, and even theramin music.
4. Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories
A short anime told in paper cutout style like the kamishibai theaters of the 1930s, it's hard to believe Yamishibai is as effective as it is. Each episode is a different story of ghosts or the supernatural, some famous, and some created just for the series. Like any short story collection, the stories vary, with some being forgettable and goofy, but others searing lasting impressions in your mind. One story, and I won't tell you which, almost made me jump out of my seat. If you're already a fan, check out the shorts KAGEWANI and The World YAMIZUKAN for more stories.
3. The Lost Village
A masterpiece of screwball comedy-horror from director Tsutomu Mizushima and prolific writer Mari Okada. Those looking for bone chilling frights won't find them here, but what you will find is an amazing B-movie thriller about a town that presents people with their greatest fears. With ridiculous characters, absurd dialogue, and inexplicable plot twists, The Lost Village is one of the most entertaining horror anime in years. It's almost impossible to catch the "so bad it's good" lightning in a bottle on purpose, yet Mizushima and Okada send us on a nightmare bus tour winking all the way.
2. Mononoke
Mononoke is a stylish and thoughtful collection of ghost stories from director Kenji Nakamura of Gatchaman Crowds. In it, we follow an ageless and mysterious medicine seller in Edo-era Japan as he pursues mononoke, or vengeful spirits. To defeat them, he must investigate the area of the hauntings to find the spirit's shape, truth, and reasoning. With an incredibly oppressive atmosphere, and a thoughtful look at the condition of women in 1800s Japan, Mononoke delivers an arthouse horror experience that has yet to be equalled in anime.
1. Shiki
The ultimate Halloween anime, Shiki examines the Western horror mainstay of vampires from a distinctly Japanese perspective. Based on a novel by 12 Kingdoms author Fuyumi Ono, Shiki tells the story of the slow but inexorable invasion by vampires of fictional Sotoba village, Salem's Lot style. But this synopsis sells the anime short, as its unorthodox character designs, expressionistic visuals, and haunting score make Shiki more than the sum of its parts. A horror anime that is actually scary, both viscerally and psychologically, there's no better way to spend a Halloween night.

Winter 2017 - Final Impressions
This is like a week late (again), but here are my thoughts about the animes I watched that finished this season! There’s 10 reviews under the cut, and they’re listed in alphabetical order for your convenience~
3-gatsu no Lion (March comes in like a Lion) - 9 / 10 ( A )
a super good character drama!!! I love how it focuses on themes of depression / loneliness as well!
the art / animation by Shaft is… well, very Shaft-like! (thanks Akiyuki Shinbo~)
good use of both muted / pastel colors and sharp / dark colors in different scenarios
hash lines were used on characters as well! gives it a sketch-like quality~
the animation itself was quite good too! mostly subdued, but had moments of really good fluidity
this shows itself the most in the more artistic sequences, for sure
and since this is Shaft, BOY did they pull out all the stops for those sequences!
…and yes, the infamous headtilts are also here :P
It was also good w/ the comedic animation (including w/ expressions!)
a note about *sound* for a sec: they always had voice-over to go w/ onscreen onomatopoeia!
plus they gave monologue voices to the kawamotos’ cats… interesting choice~
this show just *really* loves cats (even making shogi explanations using cats!)
there are A LOT of really good / memorable characters here; they help the show really shine!
(it IS a character-based drama, after all)
Rei Kiriyama!!! what a great (and relatable!) protag
seeing his mental struggles play out was very interesting to see (& also very complex, in a good way!)
he’s also very sympathetic, despite being a prodigy! he has to deal w/ lots of crap :(
we see him struggle & blame himself a lot, so it’s even better when he finds some happiness or revelation!
HE DESERVES TO BE HAPPY ;A; (…and he definitely makes progress by season’s end!)
there’s so many Good supporting characters that i’d be here all day if I went into detail about them ^^;
the Kawamoto’s are such a supporting family for Rei!!!
all 3 sisters are really good (and occasionally get some spotlight time… mostly Hinata though)
Nikaidou’s also a good guy… he’s kind of like Rei’s rival! (he’s kinda pushy but gives Rei good motivation & help!)
shout-out to Tatsuyuki-san; his personality was quite fun and also loves cats to death
Hayashida-sensei! He’s a bumbling guy, but really gives great advice once in a while :’)
he also is Rei’s main mentor on the school side of things, pulling some strings to help Rei move on to 2nd year ;~;
Shimada-san was a late addition, but HOT DAMN did he have a great impact on Rei + the show
I loved his backstory, i loved his personality, i loved his seiyuu’s performance… great character all around
Kyoko is VERY FAR from a Good character, but she shows more complexities as time goes on
on one hand, she’s VERY manipulative of Rei’s emotions; she also has feelings of jealously towards him + feelings for Gotou
speaking of Gotou, WHAT A FUCKING ASSHOLE
I don’t remember what his first appearance was, but that scene of him riling up Rei made me LIVID
at least he gets beaten by Shimada-san in the lion king tournament >:)
as far as story goes, it’s a character-focused drama; so it follows a year of Rei’s life going through high school and his pro shogi career
the drama comes from both character interactions & developments they go through; it’s executed REALLY WELL
the show pulls off both incredibly goofy and incredibly somber moments quite well!
Rei’s path of self-growth isn’t quite done yet, as the final episode shows him entering 2nd year and establishing a club!
the finale also has a look back on how his perceptions on life & loneliness have changed since he was a kid~
in any case, season 2 is confirmed and will be coming this fall season! \o/
Overall, I really enjoyed this artistic and introspective show! Definitely one of my (four?) picks for AOTS~
ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu ka - 8.0 / 10 ( B )
This was probably the most chill & relaxed anime about bureaucracy and political coups / upheaval that I’ve ever seen xD
animation:
I really like what Madhouse did with the visuals! It’s quite a unique look~
The art style had elements of realism (w/ the characters, at least); however their hair looks fluffy & light! (& some funny facial features, so it’s not all realism :P)
not to mention the backgrounds are brightly colored & watercolor-esque~
the art in general is also kinda sketch-like with the outlines! it’s kind of a rough look but w/ a bunch of charm!
I also have to mention the FOOD in this show; there’s good attention to detail here, plus it’s drawn so nicely (+ even huge sometimes!)
the animation itself was also nice, in terms of subtle movements, like walking or hand/head movements!
super big shout-out to the *opening theme*!!! That was definitely my favorite OP of the season; it’s such a jam!!!
It’s also a nice contrast from the rest of the show’s tone (the song’s super upbeat, while the show itself is so chill :P)
characters:
The cast overall was interesting to watch; there’s a good mix of personalities here, but all of them contribute to the show’s laidback tone~
Jean Otus (the main protag) can sneaky when he wants to (but he’s mostly nonchalant)
he’s a nice guy, but doesn’t emote much… it can be hard to get a read of what he’s thinking, for sure
either way, he’s still quite caring (towards Nino & his sister Lotta, at least)
Nino’s great… he’s my favorite character in this show, for sure
he can be really sneaky sometimes, but is also a genuine friend to Jean & Lotta :’)
I also really liked seeing how tight Jean & Nino’s bond was~
it also helps that his seiyuu (Kenjiro Tsuda) had a great performance voicing him~
Lotta is a happy & cheerful girl who loves her food / bread! (she doesn’t contribute much to the overarching plot, though)
Rail (the policeman) gets dragged into some plot happenings from time to time, but proves to be a nice guy by the end
Prince Schwan, despite being the next-in-line for the throne, doesn’t seem to do much in the overarching plot (at least not until the finale?)?
in any case, any character voiced by Miyano Mamoru is still fun to watch regardless
Maggie (Schwan’s guard) keeps a good eye on him
plus he’s kinda a dork… in a deadpan way (& he sure loves his sandwich bread)
Lilium kinda blended in w/ the other ACCA chairmen in the beginning, but eventually showed his true (i.e. evil) intentions by ep. 10 or so
poor Grossular’s had it rough; first he had his country take responsibility for a major train accident, and now Lilium blackmailed / took advantage of him :(
he was a prime suspect to being the true identity of Nino’s main boss for a while, too! (it ended up being Oulu, the blond mustache guy xD)
Mauve was a good & strong female authority figure in ACCA too! She kinda acted like a private investigator at times :P
I was unsure where she stood most of the time, but I’m glad she proved to be the one to thwart Lilium’s plan in the end~
the other five chairman + other ACCA members were… just kinda there. That’s all I’m gonna say about them ^^;
story:
the basic premise involves Jean having to travel to each of the 13 districts within the country, while plans for a coup d’etat brew in the background!
no matter what wheeling & dealing was going on during the story, the tone always stayed calm & cool (w/ smooth jazz music to boot xD)
there’s quite a bit going on in the story at any given time, but I will admit it was hard for me to follow much of the time ^^;
many characters being really vague (I’m looking at you, five chairmen…) didn’t really help things in this regard either
of course, you could argue this adds to the mystery / intrigue, so… your mileage my vary
I was still interested in what was happening though! Especially when it involved the main players (& learning more about them!)
I liked the world-building!!! It was cool seeing how each district was different from each other~ (plus the different foods, of course)
episode 4 was particularly interesting, since it involved Suitsu & how it was kinda like a darker-tone mini-version of the overarching plot!
my favorite aspect of the story was learning about Jean’s (& Lotta’s) secret link to the royal family, along w/ Nino’s involvement w/ that!
the episode(s?) that were from Nino’s perspective as he grew up w/ his father (as they both watched the Otus kids) were definitely a highlight for me
the overall picture (or at least, where certain characters stood in the plot) grew clearer by the end, and by the climax, we knew for sure who the main antagonist was
the finale had the “coup” halted swiftly (and calmly, as is tradition in this show), plus we got to see a bit of epilogue too~
the climax itself was pretty short (& kinda underwhelming?), but then again, it makes sense considering how the rest of the show is, tone-wise
also, it’s worth noting that the anime as a whole covered the entirety of its source material! that’s a rarity nowadays!
Overall, I enjoyed my time with ACCA! It’s not the easiest show to follow plot-wise, but it has a cool sense of atmosphere & is just a very suave show in general xD
Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Impure King Arc - 8.5 / 10 ( B+ )
This second season, that we finally got six-ish years later, was pretty good! I think I preferred S1 (or at least the 1st half) but I still like what we got here!
art / animation:
A-1 Pictures did a good job here for the most part!
the art style does have some subtle changes from S1 (like bloom effects and rounder/softer features on characters), but not too different otherwise
I liked how the color palette felt muted and bright at the same time! the backgrounds were also quite nice~
plus the special effects weren’t bad (i.e. fire, the Impure King’s spore-like body)
I did notice some episodes in the middle dipped in animation quality (mostly in character’s faces/heads), which kinda took me out of those episodes :/
other than that, the animation was above average and had some good action animation in there (though not *great*, per se)
characters:
it’s good to finally have these characters back after so long! admittedly, it was had to remember what state they were all in at the start (…six years is a long time, okay?)
Rin is still a good and lovable protag! I love how he has such a kind heart, despite acting rough on the outside xD
he had to win back the trust of his friends (and overcome his fear of losing control of his flames)… i’m glad he got to find his self-worth in the end ;A;
Yukio still takes his duties very seriously and scolds Rin a lot ^^;
he had some mind-games to overcome too, courtesy of Toudou (thoughts like: jealously towards Rin and hating having to watch over him all the time)
not to mention he awakened some demon powers for the first time (demon eyes)!
by the end though, he still has a way to go (as he acknowledges he still very self-hating)
Rin’s entourage of friends were hesitant / distrustful of him at the start (due to events from last season), but were won over one by one eventually~
it was kind of weird being brought back (after so long) to *that* particular point… it was a little jarring from what I remembered of them before
Shiemi felt like she wasn’t being of much help (especially since Nee got temporarily destroyed), but she gained back her resolve as well \o/
plus she helped Rin gain confidence w/ a hug & nice words in ep. 7 :’)
Ryuuji got some focus as well, as he had a rocky relationship w/ his dad (which struck a GREAT parallel as pointed out in ep. 4)
Tatsuma was seen as suspicious despite his cheerful / ditzy attitude, but learning about the secrets he had to hide made him more lovable~
In general, we got to learn more about where Ryuuji, Konekomaru, and Renzou grew up and learn about their family sects!
Shura is still a good mentor / ally to Rin (& his friends), while also keeping him in line~
Toudou (the human villain of this season) was a good manipulator / mind-game player… that’s about it ^^;
…and Shirou is still a great example of a dead character remaining relevant throughout the show~
he’s still a motivation for both Rin and Yukio, plus we learned of his history w/ Tatsuma & the Sect!
story:
This arc starts off on a weird place, since not only has it been six years since S1, this arc picks up from the *middle* of S1
of course, this is because this season’s arc is from the manga, while S1’s second half was anime original
that being said, the transition could’ve been smoother; some canon-versions of events are only shown in flashbacks, for example :/
in any case, this arc is all about the Impure King’s eventual revival in Kyoto, and the exorcists having to stop it!
while the main story of this arc wasn’t doing much *new*, necessarily, the execution overall was… pretty good!
there weren’t many moments that reached the emotional highs of S1’s best moments, but they were still good here too~
that being said, stuff like Rin being reassured by Shiemi in ep. 7, and Rin finally controlling his flames in ep. 11… still good moments there!
however, episode 4 was definitely my favorite episode; it brought up that father/son relationship parallel i mentioned earlier in a GREAT way~
it was definitely the best emotional high for me, especially since it made a connection to such a powerful moment in S1 ;~;
I also liked seeing more of Shirou’s past life (as told through Tatsuma), along w/ learning Rin’s sword was originally the Sect’s object of worship!
Seeing Yukio gets confronted w/ mind-games was interesting to see, along w/ him unlocking demon powers for the first time!
It’ll be interesting to see the implications of this later on, assuming we get a S3 ;A;
in this regard, I’ve seen people refer to this arc as a “setup arc”, and I can kinda see why. Progress was made, but there were hints thrown out as well
the finale was an epilogue of sorts, with Rin & friends recovering + seeing the sights, Rin & Yukio talking it out, and hints of Mephisto’s ulterior motives
the talk between brothers at the end definitely left things open-ended for a continuation
Overall, I had a good time with this sequel, and I’m glad I got to see more of this series in general, after so long! The transition from S1’s midpoint can be kinda rocky, but still check this out if you’re a shounen fan~
Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews with Monster Girls) - 8.0 - 8.5 / 10 ( B )
A cute and fun slice-of-life show about a handful of monster girls in high school (plus their teacher)! It does a good job tackling some social issues as well!
art / animation:
A-1 Pictures did a good job with the visuals here! Very light and simple style~
The color palette is full of bright colors (w/ lower saturation), and the character art style has rounded features for girls (some moe influence, probably) & angular ones for boys
The animation itself is mostly standard fare, but has some above-average fluidity w/ some special effects (Yuki’s ice tears come to mind)
it does lend itself well to comedic moments & timing, which is good for this show ^^
characters:
I liked the cast overall! they had a good dynamic together (which is good, considering how they become close friends over time)
Takahashi-sensei was a good (& different) lead for the show! He’s caring and very knowledgable about monster lore~
for a harem-esque main group like this, it’s great to see a different take on the typical “male harem protag” like this!
he’s a good support system for the other demi girls, and helps them be more confident in themselves (& learn more about themselves)!
(he’s like this for even Satou-sensei, since he’s really good at covering up the aphrodisiac effects have on him)
Hikari is hyper and silly, and is a big contributor to this show’s comedic side~
she’s pretty different from vampires of lore, which is explored quite a bit during the show (& ties into the show’s themes too)
I also liked how she’s not afraid to stand up for her new friends (like how she confronted people gossiping about Yuki) :’)
Machi is sort of soft-spoken, but she also smart and willing to talk to others!
she’s the most physically different out of the three (since she’s a dullahan), which leads to interesting (& funny) scenarios w/ her head & body~
she (w/ help from Takahashi & co.) develops work-arounds for her problems, and helps others feel less awkward about talking to her!
her crushing on Takahashi-sensei is… weird (why do you do this, show)
Yuki is definitely the most shy of the three starting out, and has the most noticeable development during her arc
she was self-hating over her demi (snow woman) nature, but the main crew help her learn about her abilities and help her gain confidence!
she becomes more outgoing after her arc, and even is shown to secretly be into hardcore manga~
Satou-sensei is a succubus teacher! She doesn’t have an arc, necessarily, but she gets some character focus nonetheless
she adjusted her daily schedule a lot due to her aphrodisiac effects, and has a hard time trying to confess her feelings for Takahashi
she tends to sympathize w/ Machi’s (& sometimes the others’) feelings towards him… you’re a teacher, don’t condone this… :/
aside from that last point, she is another good occasional support system for the girls, since she’s both a teacher and a fellow demi~
even *she* has her own support(?) system, in the form of Ugaki!
story:
like most slice-of-life anime, this follows the lives of high school girls and show their experiences, both good and bad
however, this one focuses around *supernatural* students: a vampire, a dullahan, and a snow woman! (plus a succubus teacher)
I really liked how this show handled themes of what’s it’s like being different (not unlike people w/ disabilities!), and helping people overcome social stigmas too!
it included stuff ranging from Yuki’s insecurities about her snow woman nature + being gossiped about…
…to more lighthearted stuff, like how Machi wanted to poke fun at her own differences without her friends feeling awkward about it!
the show would also compare & contrast the Demis w/ their mythical counterparts, which ties into this theme well~
moments like Hikari standing up to Yuki’s gossip bullies & the video letter to Takahashi were some of this show’s best moments~
there’s also some fun comedy! (which was kinda hit or miss for me)
the comedy’s at its best when it plays w/ their personalities and/or unique aspects of their Demi natures!
stuff like Takahashi + Hikari’s dynamic, plus Yuki’s hidden “hardcore(?)” side are good examples of this
the show’s comedic timing in general is pretty good!
this also includes the romance stuff though; they code Takahashi-sensei + the Demi’s relationship as romantic sometimes and it’s just… no
thankfully it was only one-sided (since Takahashi explicitly says he wouldn’t have feelings for them), but it still kinda rubbed me the wrong way
the finale was mostly some fun comedy stuff (it was a pool episode), but it threw in some nice heartwarming stuff in the end~
Overall, this was a really enjoyable & laid-back anime that wasn’t afraid to be serious / heartwarming too! (w/ some good social commentary to boot!) In a season full of comedy slice-of-life shows, Demi-chan (& one other) is one of the season’s best~
Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon - 8.5 / 10 ( B+ )
The *other* good SOL comedy this season! Really funny and really cute w/ that reliable KyoAni polish~
art / animation:
as per usual, Kyoto Animation did a great job w/ the visuals!
the style they used this time around is more cartoon-y than their usual style (so closer to Nichijou, rather than Hibike Euphonium)
very bright color palette and (kinda watercolor-like) backgrounds! Just a “simpler”-looking show all around (which is definitely NOT a bad thing!)
the animation itself is, of course, really great too! the fluidity is strong w/ this one~
whether it’s subtle movements or even an action scene or two, the animation has a great sense of movement & body language!
it also lent itself to comedic moments very well! (i.e. well-animated slapstick or good comedic expressions / backgrounds)
there is, also… some fanservice (not a *lot*, per se, but enough that it drove away some people on my twitter feed)
it’s mostly boob-centered, as a few characters have large boobs (w/ Lucoa having *huge* ones), so there’s… boob jiggle sometimes, among other things
the fanservice in this show specifically didn’t bother me *that* much, but your mileage may vary
characters:
the cast as a whole was really fun! they all played off each other well too!
Kobayashi & Tohru have a good dynamic together, and develop a good relationship together too! (let’s be real here… lesbians~)
both of them have pretty different personalities (stoic / brash vs. bright / bubbly), yet work together quite well!
Kanna is somehow stoic & happy at the same time! I like how she’s curious about everything & is just a good bean in general~
Lucoa has a nice “older-sister” dynamic w/ the others! She’s got good wisdom, but can also be a bit of an airhead ^^;
but please… someone tell her to give poor Shouta a break…
Fafnir starts out as wanting nothing but killing & destruction, but eventually bonds w/ Takiya-kun and gets addicted to video games ^^;
I liked seeing how he has his own ways of showing affection / appreciation for others~
(...and he’s voiced by Daisuke Ono, which is always a plus)
Elma didn’t even get introduced until episode 8 (& doesn’t even get a ton of screen time after that), but she’s enjoyable too
her revenge(?) against Kobayashi only lasted for 1 episode(?), and then just becomes an office worker (so she ends up being the most normal dragon, in a way :P)
story:
the premise involves an office worker lady who meets a dragon who decides to be her live-in house maid! (plus there’s other dragons!)
this is a slice-of-life comedy, so like most others, it goes through some daily life scenarios that are also humorous
this time around though, there’s DRAGONS! (so there’s supernatural stuff sometimes involved)
the comedy involved the dragons learning & adapting to aspects of human society, which was fun to watch
I liked seeing how they would react to different situations! (especially since each dragon would respond differently)
the characters bouncing off each other (i.e. dynamic) also led to some good comedic moments
kobayashi & tohru’s relationship was a big contributor to this as well
there were a couple reoccuring gags that got old after a while: Lucoa’s… boob antics w/ Shouta, and Riko’s overreaction to Kanna
the former is… basically rooted in fanservice (leave the poor boy alone! ;~; )
the latter I didn’t have as much issue w/ to start, but after seeing it pointed out on my twitter TL, I can see why people take issue w/ it (i.e. fetishization (i think?))
there were also some really nice heartwarming moments too! stuff like that helps elevate a comedy anime for me~
many of these were centered around the character’s relationships w/ each other (it was nice seeing them grow closer over time!)
the finale had a different, more serious tone than the rest of the show, but it was still really good!
seeing tohru (& eventually kobayashi) confront tohru’s dad really showed how much their relationship (& love for the human world) has grown!
Aside from a couple small issues, I really did have a great time w/ this show! If you’re looking for a fun comedy w/ supernatural elements plus some heartwarming stuff, this won’t let you down~
Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish) - 9 / 10 ( A )
A really well directed character drama about sexuality and unhealthy relationships… It’s definitely not for everybody, but it’s really well done!
art / animation:
Studio Lerche did a *really good* job with the visuals here! Definitely their best-looking anime yet!
the art style makes good use of muted colors and sketch-like outlines on characters; it makes everything look kind of like a watercolor painting!
they also do close-ups by overlaying a strip or square on top; sort of like a manga panel! (It’s definitely executed better here than in GATE :P )
the art direction in general is just really good… they know how to use lighting well, plus there’s good artistic / stylized scenes when characters are introspective~
as for animation, it’s nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done in the end~
they do sometimes use lower frame rates for artistic / stylistic effect though!
also shout-out to the awesome ED theme by Sayuri! I’d always want to sing along with it at the end of each episode (+ used really well as a transition!)
characters:
this cast is… quite the interesting bunch to say the least ^^;
the show’s english title is “Scum’s Wish”, so yeah, most of the main cast is pretty scummy in one way or another. The good news, though, is that it leads to really good *character development*! \o/
pretty much everybody got at least one focus episode, which is great!!! I love it when shows do that!!!
Hanabi is the main protagonist; she tends to keeps to herself, and is also snarky at times.
she goes through a pretty dark road over the course of the show, but comes to terms w/ herself and what she’s looking for by the end~
Mugi is kinda like Hanabi in some ways, but he can be quite forward at times, and also can get roped into bad situations.
he eventually comes to terms w/ his love situation as well, but it’s a bit of a rockier end for him :(
Akane… is definitely the “villain” of the show, and VERY easy to hate xD
she sleeps w/ guys all the time + plays mind-games w/ Hanabi + Mugi, but by the end, even she finds some happiness & change for the better through her new marriage~
Sanae is Hanabi’s best friend, and also a lesbian! Her personality is very headstrong and sassy at times.
she also starts going after Hanabi in her own way, in hopes of winning her heart… thankfully, the two eventually reconcile (even though it was messy by the end)
Noriko (aka Moca) is Mugi’s childhood friend, who still has feelings for him after so long…
she definitely has the least amount of screen time out of the main characters, but her focus episodes show another side of her character (+ her self-realization as well)
Kanai-san is Hanabi’s crush who falls in love w/ Akane… he doesn’t do much until closer to the end, during Akane’s focus episodes
There’s also Sanae’s cousin and that one womanizer dude, but they aren’t around much (but still have contributions to different character arcs)
story:
the premise on paper definitely will turn some people off, since it’s about two people “dating” each other since they can’t be in relationships w/ who they truly love
not to mention said people they’re in love with are probably 4+ years older than they are (& how Hanabi calls Kanai-san “big bro / onii-chan”… yeah :/ )
also there *are* sex scenes in this show (albeit no actual private parts are shown), and they can get steamy at times ^^;
so yeah, because of these things, this show is definitely *not* for everybody. I don’t blame you if these things’ll turn you off from this show…
that being said, even though this show is about messed-up people in messed-up relationships, it’s very well directed and executed!
they do a really good job of selling the emotion and subtle drama in each scene (including exploring characters’ mindsets really well!)
even though it’s a character drama, they still manage to pull off cliffhangers occasionally! You just want to find out where it’s gonna go from there!
each character arc wrapped up really nicely, and you can tell that they’ve bettered themselves by the end of the show
the final episode itself was great, too! it’s a little bit of a downer that Hanabi and Mugi go their separate ways, but it ties in with the ending quite well~
it also helps that the anime in general is a complete adaptation of the source material! we don’t get enough of those these days~
Overall, I really enjoyed this series, and is definitely one of my AOTS picks! If you like dramatic shows centered around romance, then this is a good one to check out!
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans S2 - 8.5 - 9.0 / 10 ( A- )
This was a really good second season and conclusion to IBO! Not to mention really sad & heartbreaking ;A;
art / animation:
Sunrise did a good job with visuals this season too! The quality is pretty much identical to last season (which is definitely a good thing!)
lots of muted & dark colors; really got the look of a gritty war-centered show down quite well~
Mars and Earth have distinct looks and feel to them too! (Mars has more dark, earth tones, Earth has brighter colors & more cool tones)
actions scenes are pretty good too; the mechas have good fluidity at times! (mostly Mika’s mech; the others have more stilted movements, since they’re, y’know, robots)
characters:
the Tekkadan crew’s back, and they’re still as likable as before~ (of course, this makes it even harder when each one dies ;~; )
Mika is as stone-faced and ready to kill as before… he does lose function of his leg and arm eventually (i think by the end of the 1st half) by using Barbatos too much
Orga becomes a bit different of a leader this season (as evidenced by his new suit!), as he commands from afar and has more negotiating talks w/ other factions
he wrestles w/ a lot of things happening around him, and what the best thing is to do at any given time… he goes through a lot ^^;
Takaki was previously just another guy in Tekkadan, but he got his own character arc during the season’s 1st half!
he had to lead a subsidiary group on Earth, which put him through a lot… in the end, he decides to leave Tekkadan so he can be helpful elsewhere & stay alive ;~;
there were a few new guys on Tekkadan at the start of the season, w/ the most notable being Hush
he wanted to catch up to Mikazuki, so he could be of more help, like his brother(?) that he admired ;~;
there’s some new faces in Gjallerhorn as well, w/ the most notable being Rustal Elion, Julietta, and Iok
Julietta seemed obsessed w/ doing anything Rustal wanted her to do, and Iok… got kind of annoying after a while (he just… wouldn’t… die!)
Iok’s eventual death was really satisfying though~
not to mention Rustal and Iok were responsible for a lot of terrible things that happened to Tekkadan this season (including literally killing them w/ hitmen >:( )
also Nobliss can just go and fuck off (and thankfully he died the most humiliating death imaginable)
I also gotta mention Gaelio, who wore a mask for most of the season (even though it was *really* obvious it was him) + helped stop McGillis
speaking of McGillis, he ramps up his plans this season and put his grand coup de tat into action
he’s more manipulative this season (involving the Bauduins & Tekkadan), but definitely fights to the bitter end (all by himself, even…)
story:
this season picks up not too long after where last season left off; Tekkadan is a more prominent organization alongside Taiwan & Gjallerhorn
their prior successes led to more people wanting to enter Tekkadan’s lifestyle, which wasn’t really what Tekkadan wanted :/
there’s a lot of political wheeling and dealing this season that was interesting to watch, but there’s no way I could remember all the details ^^;
this also applies to military strategy (mostly on Gjallerhorn’s end)
the first half’s main plot beats mostly composed of the Earth branch arc (centering around Takaki), and the Mobile Armor arc!
seeing the Mobile Armor(s) in action was pretty crazy (and scary…), and it took A LOT to take them down!
after that arc, I would’ve expected them to be more relevant in the 2nd half, but that didn’t really happen at all (asides from Dainsleif usage)
the second half sees McGillis’ coup and Tekkadan’s life to its conclusion; going up against the mighty Gjallerhorn, but falling short in the end…
*lots of characters die* during this half… and all of them are REALLY SAD (*especially* Lafter and Orga, who die by hitman gunfire)
each death scene is really effective, but Orga’s especially is SUCH A GOOD SCENE (he dies looking forward the whole time; even his blood moves forward ;~;7 )
I wish he didn’t die 2 episodes before the end, though… Mika & Orga should’ve been able to fight together at the end ;A;
almost every main character dies, including Mikazuki… Tekkadan dies w/ it, making the ending partially a tragedy
the finale has the end of the final fight + epilogue; the antagonists win in the end, but they work w/ Kudelia + others to help make a better world
it felt kind of weird for Gjallerhorn to change like that, considering the bad things they did? But whatever works, I guess :/
that being said, I liked seeing the surviving members of Tekkadan lead new lives, and Atra getting to takes care of her new son :’)
Overall, IBO was an emotional and action-packed ride from start to finish! I really enjoyed my first Gundam series~
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu S2 - 9 / 10 ( A )
one of my AOTY picks from 2016 strikes again with this great sequel & conclusion to the series!
art / animation by Studio Deen is very subdued and not very flashy (i.e. not much in motion, per se) but it still looks quite pretty
good use of muted colors (both pastel & dark), plus good use of soft shading!
backgrounds looked nice as well! the set pieces in general helped sell many scenes, both artistic & grounded ones~
also super shout-out to that awesome OP sequence! great scenes centering around Yakumo + unsettling music = MAGIC!!!
this season shifts back to modern(?) day, so we see much more of characters that we only saw in the 1st and last episodes of S1!
before we get to that though, let’s talk about Yakumo!!! what a great character / protagonist
he’s a stubborn old man on the outside, but a haunted soul on the inside, who can’t escape his past & the two main people in it
a lot of this show’s appeal was seeing how his story would progress (and finally, conclude)
we all wanted him to find his peace at his death (& even after it!)… it all worked out in the end ;~;
he’s complex in a lot of ways, which makes him interesting to watch for sure (especially after watching S1)
yet another mention to Akira Ishida totally rocking it in his performance; he does it all w/ this character!
Yotaro’s back!!! He’s such a chipper guy the whole way through, and he’s a joy to watch~
He can be very headstrong too, and can help force some sense into people!
The scene where he confronts the gang boss comes to mind
Another part I liked was the episode where he watched Sukeroku’s taped performance… I liked seeing how “into it” he was
He’s also very determined to keep rakugo alive into the future! He was a great foil to Yakumo in general :)
Konatsu is very short-tempered & snappy at times, but she has a caring heart deep down too~
I loved when she got to perform Jugemu!!! She was so happy getting to fulfill her dream! (She even did it again in the finale!)
Her becoming the first female rakugo performer in the end was another added bonus~
I have mixed feelings about her never learning the truth about her father (Sukeroku’s) death... There could’ve been some good character development to come from that, but at least she gets to keep a secret of her own in the finale :P
Speaking of that secret, her teasing about the possible identity of shinnosuke’s father in the finale… i don’t know how i feel about that :/
other supporting characters like Higuchi-san were enjoyable too, even if their contributions were more minor
I did like seeing Higuchi-san butt heads w/ Yakumo on multiple occasions over their viewpoints towards rakugo’s progression though! (It was intriguing drama :P)
I love characters staying relevant even in death, and Sukeroku (and Miyokichi to a lesser extent) are no exception
he’s a motivating factor for Yotaro, but is like a haunting ghost to Yakumo (which is a nice contrast~)
we got to see their development book-ended in episode 11 too~
I’m glad Matsuda-san got to see everything to the very end (including sending Yakumo off in the afterlife) :’)
As for the story, just like last season, this is a character drama first and foremost~
Unlike 3-gatsu no lion, however, there’s more of an overarching plot here (w/ Yakumo’s life story + how rakugo will survive past his death)
the plot was more enjoyable this time around, since we’re finally progressing the modern day timeline! This season picked up right where the 1st season’s finale left off~
it definitely can suck you in w/ its execution! Again, it’s very subdued / laid-back, but you can still sense the tension in the air during many scenes!
any scene involving Yakumo literally seeing things (or his run-ins with the shinigami) definitely grabbed & peaked my interest!
these scenes had a mysterious, almost supernatural vibe to them! It made them even more interesting to watch~
when red-eyed Sukeroku shows up in the OP, it can’t be good news… those cliffhangers were 2spoopy4me :P
I talk about Yakumo’s scenes a lot, but other characters like Yotaro had some really tense and heartwarming scenes at well!
I brought this up in the character section too, but scenes like Yotaro ranting to the gang boss, or Konatsu reciting Jugemu in front of the elementary school kids, were also great!
the transition to Yakumo’s final scene of life to death is kinda weird, but the scenes / episodes on both ends were really nice!
episode 11 was like a de-facto finale, as Yakumo (+ Sukeroku & Miyokichi) got to tie up loose ends in the afterlife, plus Yakumo got to do one last show to the dead crowd (+ Konatsu)~
the finale was a nice little epilogue showing both of Konatsu’s kids all grown up, and how rakugo will continue on~
This season was a great follow-up (& conclusion) to last season! This is definitely an AOTS pick for me (and possible AOTY pick… again ^^; ) If you’re looking for a great character-based historical drama, this is an easy recommendation for sure!
Tales of Zestiria the X S2 - 8.0 / 10 ( B )
this was a good second cour for ToZX! it had some good character focus stuff + action, and (will probably) conclude the story!
Note: This is based off the anime *only*, as I have not played the game(s).
art / animation still looks really nice, thanks to that Ufotable polish & magic~
The motion in action scenes were quite fluid, plus good special effects (i.e. fire, magic, etc.), which just makes it… really nice looking in general!
animation isn’t quite sakuga-tier, but it’s still more fluid than in most action anime!
it makes good use of muted colors (both warm & cool tones) as well, with nice backgrounds to boot!
plus the characters are drawn / rendered quite well~ (the CGI isn’t too bad either (i.e. dragons), aside from distance shots of people moving)
In terms of character development, Rose was definitely a main focus this season (in comparison to Alisha last season)
hell, most of the plot for the show’s first half (or more) was driven by her character arc!
we really get to see Rose change her mentality for the better, plus learn more about her past and explore her bond w/ Dezel!
speaking of Dezel, he ended up being a really entertaining guy himself (plus a good partner in crime for Rose~)
he had good development as well (along w/ his personality that grew on me over time), making it even sadder when he dies in episode 23 ;~;
Alisha doesn’t have as much screen time during that first half or so, but she definitely has her contributions in the second half~
she even gets her own armitization forms, which apparently weren’t in the games! \o/
During Rose’s character / story arc, Sorey had a good clash of ideals w/ Rose, which was interesting to see
It helped give him a new perspective, even if it didn’t change his ideals much in the end
Oh yeah, Zaveid *finally* came back and became a full-on party member this season! He’s still a cool fighter guy w/o a shirt :P
even then, he didn’t come in until the second half, but he definitely forged some bonds with Dezel (and Alisha too, I think?)
As for everyone else (including supporting cast), they were fine! No major developments, necessarily, but still good to have around
Story time! Like I said in the character section, Rose’s character arc was kind of a story arc in itself, taking up slightly more than the first half!
Even though the “main plot” was in the backseat, I still enjoyed this arc and finally learning about Rose (who we didn’t know much about during S1)
plus it had a tense climax w/ Rose trying to kill the man from her past… it ended sorta anticlimactically, but it wrapped things up regardless
The second half was definitely more skewed towards the main story, since there was the dragon in Ladylake(?), plus the final battle stuff itself
I almost forgot, there’s more Berseria references this time! Thankfully not full episodes this time, but just references for world-building
it sounds like these references though are from endgame stuff, meaning friends of mine playing Berseria had to stop watching to avoid spoilers…
I will say that this show does “the calm before the storm” pretty well, for the most part! Good character interactions + lead-up confrontations
also, considering Sorey is all about purifying everything, it’s fitting we get backstory for the final boss himself in ep. 24
As for the finale… as of when I’m writing this, the final episode hasn’t aired yet, and won’t for another month or so. So all we have for now is ep. 24 as a pseudo-finale...
That episode though was pretty good! It felt like a proper penultimate episode (i.e. the first part of the final fight), ending right on Sorey’s big power-up!
I have good reason to believe that the finale, when it comes out, will have a good sense of conclusion, so I’m not too worried~
I may update this review after that episode comes out, but time will tell if I get around to it ^^;
Overall, ToZX is a very solid fantasy action series! It doesn’t break much new ground, but its execution makes up for it to make an enjoyable experience~
Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil) - 7.5 - 8.0 / 10 (C+ / B- )
An enjoyable (and popular!) military action show which centers around a basically evil protagonist! It had some interesting elements to it, but there wasn’t enough of them to go above “meh” status for me :/
art / animation:
Studio NUT is a brand new studio, and this was not a bad first outing for them at all in this department!
the dark and muted color palette helps to realize this war-torn alternate world, along w/ this show’s darker tone
this setting is very heavily inspired by WWI / WWII… *insert Nazi comparison here* (it takes place closer to WWI years, though)
the characters themselves are rendered w/ a slight lean towards realism, but still have cartoonish elements to them
the former characteristic is most notable in the male designs, and the latter is definitely noticeable in the female designs (i.e. big eyes, “pouty” lips, etc.)
animation-wise, it’s nothing to write home about, for the most part.
there were a couple nicely-animated action sequences (w/ the best one being in ep. 11), but other that that, it was mostly standard fare
the CGI, though, is not very good… you don’t see it much, though, so that’s good at least
characters:
sure, there’s a decent sized cast here, but there’s really only one character worth mentioning specifically... and that, of course, is Tanya herself.
she’s ruthless, brutal, heartless, and willing to sacrifice her own to reach her goals… no wonder she’s called “Tanya the Evil!”
her personality (& the idea of the protagonist basically being a VILLAIN) is definitely one reason why this show became popular this season
her backstory adds an interesting layer to the mix too, as she was a heartless company owner in her past life! (plus she retains her memories from said life)
seeing what actions she would take next (or how she’d react to certain situations) was a big appeal for this show too
not to mention she has to “pray” to the very thing she hates in order to launch attacks w/ her gun >:3
oh yeah, I liked Serebryakova, the girl who was Tanya’s right hand girl!
Her cheery personality was a good foil for Tanya’s, plus she’s voiced by Saori Hayami~
there’s also those military officers / strategists, I guess
aside from Erich, who had the most suspicions about Tanya, the others just felt like… generic military guys :/
story:
the premise sets up Tanya, an evil corporate boss in her past life, in a war-torn world where she must fight in the military!
it’s all about Tanya trying to get revenge against God / “Being X”, and dis-prove its existence…!
this battle of ideals / wits was the most interesting of the show for me; my interest went up whenever Being X (or anything related) showed up
Being X not having a set form, and only showing up through possession of other things / people was a cool concept too!
however, I felt like we didn’t see enough of this aspect in the show… so it felt like a generic military show, most of the time :/
any plot points that didn’t relate to the Being X overarching plot (or Tanya herself) didn’t really grab my interest… the military stuff was kinda boring, in that regard
episode 11 was my favorite episode, as it had Tanya duking it out w/ the guy she seemingly killed earlier (plus he had Being X powers!)
I felt like that fight was too short for the buildup we had for it, though… it was a good fight, though!
the finale was definitely more quiet and reflective, but also was pretty open-ended.
Overall, I had a good time with this show; there were interesting ideas in here for sure, but they didn’t get as much focus / screentime as I would’ve liked… That being said, I can see why this show became quite popular! If you like military shows (or shows w/ evil protagonists), give the first 2 episodes a shot and see for yourself~
I also will be writing a Final Impressions post for Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, which also finished this season! I’ll update this post with the link when it’s done~
