My Angel (The Series) Rewatch

I'll start by saying this:

This is the first time I have seen these episodes since they originally aired.

I rewatched all of seasons 1-3. Because season 4 is….season 4, I rewatched 4x1 - 4x6, 4x10, 4x17, & 4x22. I’m skipping season 5 except "You're Welcome". I read the gist of season 5 for my memory and I remember snippets of it when it aired.

Angel & Cordelia were my OTP back then & that remains (probably even more so now that I have finished the rewatch and I am an adult now lol)

NOW (This may be lengthy, but I have alot to say)

We all know now (as much as we can know as outsiders) what really went down between Charisma & Joss. I think David Greenwalt's departure didn't help things. Lots to be said about the season 4 storyline for Cordelia (& Angel) vs its original rumored intent. LOTS. But that's neither here nor there. I'd like to shine a light on the following from what was actually aired.

Seasons 1-3 built up an incredible story for Angel & Cordelia that turned from acquaintances/semi-friends (on BTVS) to coworkers to friends to falling in love with each other.

Angel identifies Cordelia as his home. Almost the second he returned in 4x01, he told Connor "What you deserve rests on one answer. Did you do something to Cordelia?" This man, who holds his son above everyone. He tells Fred & Gunn he kept telling himself "I gotta get home to Cordelia."

He returns and he does everything to find her. In "Awakening", he dreams of being with her, together, and being okay with Connor and you realize that, underneath the terrible circumstances of season 4, there is a theme here. Home, for Angel, is with Cordelia & Connor.

He was a second too late in killing "Evil Cordelia" before she could give birth. And I wonder if that's something he really would have been able to do. Because he didn't do it, did he?

In 4x22, Wolfram & Hart offer the deal. He's not buying it. Lilah mentions the first assignment would be visiting Sunnydale and providing the amulet. He says "Buffy can take care of herself" and that he's not taking the deal. As soon as Lilah mentions they can find Cordelia & Connor, Angel stops. Now Connor endangers himself and Cordelia (Angel's' face when he sees Cordelia is strapped is heartbreaking). Angel & Connor fight. He takes the deal to give Connor a new life and to save Cordelia.

Season 5, he loses his way. He's lost without Cordelia. A shell. Unhappy. Guess who comes back to him? Connor & Cordelia, even for flitting moments. And who brings him back on his path? Cordelia. With a kiss. Because she loves him. "She set me on the path."

With the absurdity of season 4, I am so grateful we got Charisma/Cordelia back to fix it, even for one episode. Of course, I would have loved more and I probably would have watched all of season 5 if she was in it but, alas, can't change the past.

All this to say, Angel loved Cordelia and he loved Connor as he would love his wife & son ( Well, Connor is his son but you know what I mean).

He holds Connor & Cordelia as his most dear & don't you ever forget it.

And I choose to believe Angel & Cordelia got their life after the finale, with Connor involved a teensy bit maybe, we just didn't get to see it.

Honestly sock opera didn't make much sense, like he wanted to destroy the laptop and journal cuz dipper was getting "too close", but the journal was needed to operate the portal which was what he Needed and Wanted. my best guess as to why he did that is cuz he didn't want them to find and go off the warnings Ford wrote esp in invisible ink but i dunno. perhaps its that the journals (esp journal 3) wrote of a way to destroy him, im guessing, since ford tosses them to dipper in weirdmageddon saying theres a way to destroy bill, but still. odd. Came back from school to see my question got answered ^^ And now instead of studying for my exams which are this week I will be doing this instead >:3

When i say they feel distant i mean like they seem to argue alot like when Error was refusing to help watch Killer Nightmare felt the need to guilt trip (idk if thats the right word) him in order to get him to help. It doesnt feel like they trust each other very much based on this interaction alone. Even at the two arguments, I noticed that Nightmare was continually provoking Error.

1. Unfortunately, yeah, even if they are close by technically, it doesn’t mean they are heathy. They are kinda like childhood friends who have grown into different people but still cling out of convenience and remaining love. If they met as adults, they wouldn’t get along, but they have history to them. They know how to push each other’s buttons, and since they have no one else to fight with without the fear of losing them, they target one another. That’s where their trust comes in, as they are the only people on the whole multiverse that they have. Sure, they are passing friends with Reaper, especially Error, but neither trust him enough to be themselves. They both know the other will never leave, so both can be utter assholes to one another, and taunt to get it out of their systems. It’s not healthy and it’s built upon their grief and subconscious blame towards each other and themselves after losing Ink.

They are in a bitter stage of their lives right now. One day, they’ll get back to who they use to be. For now, there’s only hints thru Killer’s perspective.

2. Error and Cross are parallels to Nightmare and Killer, and that’s all I can rlly say until Cross’s chapters. But yes, that’s still canon.

3. Error will have full chapters dedicated to him in the future! He’s not officially apart of the bad sanses, and is more of an ally to Nightmare as he doesn’t care for the other bad sanses besides Cross and Horror (who don’t come in until much later)

4. LOL I LOVE ERROR TOO! I’ve made jokes about how he’s my husband and I even jokingly got a body pillow of him to match with best friend irl mil_leon on tiktok. He will win this year….trust…

I have four OTPS, actually. BlackCoffee (reaper and Ccino), ColorKiller (rainbowknife), Errormare, and Drink. Shockingly, Errormare isn’t my favorite. DRINK is. 5. I really recommend binge watching ginjanijaowo and their speedpaints and character design videos! June taught me a LOT about character design and watching them draw inspires me a lot. I also suggest doing ugly arm up sketches before each important project to get the rust off! Don’t limit urself to only one anatomy technique- as I’ve tried every single one in existence and still developed my own. Drawing is all about finding what works for YOU and sometimes, the big popular artists techniques just won’t. Like… doing the gesture line is a very important part of the process….that I will never do LOL

However, giving art advice is tricky as it’s easier to focus on one aspect you want help on so the artist ur asking can focus their advice better! Like asking about anatomy, drawing heads, animatics, story boarding, etc! I wouldn’t mind doing any tutorials for those types of questions!

you get it. dont mind me, but this has been nagging for a few days when i saw mentions of chilaios has no 'canon basis' or along those lines or dont get why its even a thing and its really not that hard? like theres a ton of reasons why someone would gravitate this ship and for myself while i enjoy the height difference alot, its their deep mutual trust and respect that has me vice gripped. idk it seems like more ARE catching onto chilaios and its steady rising so its weird to still insist on its 'crackship' status

right??? it drives me insane. i don't know what the hell happened in modern fandom for people to dismiss ships with plenty of material to work with as having "no canon basis".

i guess it has something to do with fandom's increasing gravitation towards canon being necessary for shipping. in this fandom specifically you can certainly ship farcille by that metric, and like... god, i dunno what else. i assume they're just making shit up about how their ships of choice have a canon basis to make themselves feel better about it. bc at the end of the day, dunmeshi is not a romance, and the only kiss we ever see is from a relationship where one is in love and the other is like "aw, you're such a good friend." (kabru was real mean for that.)

either way, back to chilaios--back in my day (shakes cane), what they have was more than enough for a "valid" ship. so much so that no one would have questioned it except people who hated it. which... is probably true here as well, a lot of the time. like, dismissing a ship you don't like as being meaningless probably feels pretty good if you actually believe yourself.

you know what an actual dunmeshi crackship would be? (throws a dart at the wall) mithrun/dandan. makes no sense, right? they were in the same room maybe once, never interacted, and have no reason to interact. that's what a crackship is. it has no canon basis whatsoever.

crackships and rarepairs can overlap, and often do, but a rarepair can also be something with real canon interactions that just didn't take off in the fandom. chilbell probably still counts as one, though it does have fics and art, so your mileage may vary.

chilaios, then, with an entire fucking 14-volume-manga's worth of interactions, several of which were important specifically to the two of them, is not a crackship, and god knows it's no longer a rarepair either, if it even was back before the anime. (i know there was like, 1 fic on ao3, but the manga was being published for like 10 years so i assume the general fandom was just a lot smaller.)

calling chilaios a crackship is straight up just not true. not what that term means. they have the same amount of canon basis as multiple other popular ships, and imo they have the chemistry to back it up, but even that isn't necessary. all told it's a pretty standard ship. they're friends, there's tension between them but there's also a deep mutual trust, and there are very few chapters where they don't directly interact (either because the chapter isn't about the touden party or bc one of them isn't present).

But Laiooooosss...seems like everyone and their mother is talking about him these days, and for good reason lol. I guess for the most part I'd go with the majority of saying that he's a neat character for a number of reasons, from being a genuine freak but not a pervert to his strong desire for friendship & the way that gets messed up and repaired to the way his love of monsters is significantly defined by how alienated he feels from much of humanity. I can't remember who said it, but he kind of reminds me of this quote I stumbled across where the speaker was noting how a reason many prefer the company of animals to that of humans is the way that animals are often very direct with their intentions and desires, whereas humans have a habit of hiding who they are and what they truly want. So especially for a manga that's all about the nature of desire, the potentially cataclysmic consequences of misreading intent, but also the absolute necessity of forming bonds with living things of all kinds to survive, Laios does make for a great protagonist.

I honestly didn't really ship him with anyone on my first read-through of the manga, but after seeing some posts on how well the compliment each other Kabru x Laios is growing on me. I think it really helps that both Kabru and Laios have goals, interests, and friend groups that lie outside of each other, but that they can complement each other so well thanks to each one possessing skills that the other one lacks and both sincerely wanting to help their loved ones. I do think it helps as well that Ryōko Kui didn't feel the need to demonize or dumb either Laios or Kabru down to make their friendship work. Hell, while Laios does become king Kabru becomes his advisor, and the manga itself stands testament to why that's a partnership that's likely for the best.

AUGH it's really hard to pin down but one non-romantic OTP for Laois given how much he loves each member of his party, but I guess ultimately I'd have to say Senshi. Besides being a fun character it was thanks to this dwarf's culinary skills with monster bits that Laios and his party were able to make the attempt to get Falin back in the first place, after all! More importantly for me however is the way Senshi has a deep understanding of the cycles that need to be maintained in order for a world of eating and being eaten to continue, and his explanation of them is something that I do think helped inform Laios's decisions which ultimately resulted in him saving the world from being consumed.

I don't think that it's a deeply unpopular opinion, but I do agree with others who've said that Laios's bouts of insensitivity and even outright bigotry shouldn't be dismissed as just him being autistic. Ryōko Kui made it pretty clear that biases of all kinds have an important hand in shaping what the world of Dungeon Meshi is like, and it definitely decreases the richness of the story to pretend that the main characters, Laios included, don't have any.

I do think that Dungeon Meshi ending where it did makes a lot of sense, but tbh I wish that we had seen more about what Laios is like as a king dealing with the more mundane day-to-day tasks of ruling. I do like that he apparently spends a lot of time and energy on the production and distribution of food, but I'd be keen to see what that would actually look like in practice, especially given the state of the island and the way a lot of the fantasy races which have long histories of being hostile towards each other are living alongside each other there. Dungeon Meshi is quite clear about Laios having a lot of difficulty reading people, and it would be interesting to see how that would play out with him in a position that's largely all about telling what people want and why and responding accordingly. Of course keep in mind this is coming from someone who's list of favorite books includes Moby-Dick (which contains lengthy descriptions of what's actually involved in boiling down whales for their oil) and the obscure sci-fi Grasp the Stars (who's hero is a middle-aged woman dealing with diplomatic emergencies at a space port), so my desire for this kind of expansion of Laios lore is probably not what most people want lmao.

For now I want her character to be the same, but more uptight and closed off, not even blinking at the sight of a new friendship because NO ONE in the show wants to like her and even if she moves away she can't move on, but she still has dreams, wanting to be someone great and wanting love, and has finally learned her lesson. This would be a great idea for a spinoff series just for her

ChlAli: One of the Royal's and family of a democratic country's president's daughter, I don't really ship it, but like what if Chloe's dad was upset that her daughter didn't have anymore friendships in her life in Paris because everyone she's known has abandoned her and sends her to Prince Ali's country to get to know each other more, since they probably don't interact all that much except international social events, so he sets up more meetings so she can have someone to hang out with, eventually becoming one of her closest friend and eventually when everyone around them is getting married and having families, everyone in their family worried that they'll never get married they set up an arranged marriage, they don't hate it but their not romantically interested in each other, they're just a guy and girl friends who decided 'meh if it had to be anyone I'd rather it be you' type of situation.

Ummmmm technically all my pairings are OTP's in their own way. Idk the closest is maybe his potential canon partner/wife Delainey and even then I'm still writing and figuring that out.

I think ships with @moonrevolutions @siiinfully (Harper) @dethdvncer @brooklynislandgirl @smolcuriouskitten and @hunting-songs had a big influence on how I write his romantic headcanons honestly.

Nonmonogamous things are cool, platonic things, romantic things. I’m pretty game for most things. noncon and abusive stuff clearly not for me. i work a 9 to 5 i hate, i'm trying to have fun and vibe. Maybe the occasional toxic ship but Chris is a very tired dude and doesn't have time for another toxic ting.

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

Considering in most verses that Chris is either in his mid 20s to early 30s, I don’t think he or I would be comfy with anyone who’s not 24+. Honestly if a 19/20 year old flirted with him, he’d just stare and say they’re a baby.

However, Chris does tend to date older as he has fallen for vampires and other paranormal beings. So he tends to prefer someone around his age or older.

Are you selective when shipping?

Half and half? Like Chris is easy to ship with but by the same token it also makes tough to ship with? Like he's such a nice easy going guy that he can work with alot of people. But at the same time, he's not always going to go for just anyone. I think it depends on the chemistry of the muses and their dynamic with Chris.

How far do steamy moments have to go before they’re considered NSFW?

Usually when clothes start getting removed and Chris is begging for more of his partner I usally slap on a read more or move it to the ol smut blog.

Once upon a tiem in the feywild there was a bunch of fried. They had alot of fin otghether `and went on adventures. On one adventure, the friends travelled to the astral planed becaue Minke’s mom was there (actyaly his granmda but we dont hve time to explain that). They found a really nice house there that actually belonged to Figs stepdad (HIS REAL DAD!!! WHO DOESNT HATE HIM OR KILL HIM!!!). They said woaw this is nice and went inside. Inside there was a nice picture and a cool couch and then som armour and stairs. Down the stairs there was a people. The people were parents… TO THE FREINDS!!! An orc man named mugorim was there and he was gifs dad but he tried to STAB HIM sand you know why??? Because he thought he was VAELLUS!!! AND HE WAS JEALOS OF VAELLUS BECAUSE ELIANA IS IN LOVE HIM AND NOT MURGIM!!!

They beat up figd dad and then got a message from… THE PRICNISSS GRRRRR!!! The princess said fig had to STOP BEING VAELLUS WARLOCK AND BE HERS INSTEAD AND FIG SAID YES OH NO!!! Princess alos said that vaellus and eliana were getting MARRIED YAY!!! And fig wanted to go back to be there but the ;rincess said the OOOONLY WAY was to be ber WARLOCK!!!

They got back and the wedding was happening. There wwere flowers everywhere and the air smelled like laundry detergent. So good. Fig saw his mom and vaellus getting married and the princess was doing vows for them but taking WAY TOO LONG BECAUYSE SHE SUCKS. Fig wanted to say hi to hs mom because its hims mom so he did but the princess told his mom fig was dead or something so she FREAKED OUT and got scared. Fig has a little guy friend named reghie and reggie was a bitch ansd sneaky snuck up and bit vaellus ANKEL!!! NOT THE NAKLE!!! So vaellus KICKED his leg and said that he got bit so eliana who is a good lady and wife wanted to get the guy who bit so she punched but she missed and aPUNCHED VAELLYUS NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Then EVEYRONE started fighting because it eaas cRAZZY and the rpicness trapped vaellus in a ground hole in the fgorund and he was stuck in the hole. Fig went to his mom and said hi mom and she said hi fig and mugorin said RAAAR and then the princess punched sevyn and sevyn flew into the skynbut minke turned into a angel (he can dp that trust me i have a good theory about it) and saved him and then aradenn said woah. adraenns mom was dancing but not kn a weird way it ws just a jig. Vaellus got out of the hole because eliana helped hi but the princess got SO MAD so she fell overt from the mad so minke threw an angel laser at her (this is part of my theory keepnup). She exploded into a dust and it was fine.

Then everybody cheered and the wedding kept going nd eliana and vaellus kissed. The spark between them was more electrifying than a flash of lighting in the moonlit sky, burning brighter than the fires of hell (where the princess hung out) and more passionate than anything ever before. Looking into his eyes, Eliana could see her one true soulmate, the most incredible man in the world who would give up life and limb to keep her save and cherished. He was hers and she was his, wholly and undoubtedly. It didn’t mater how manty people were watching them, because their souls were intertwined in a dance of destiny, their threads of fate woven together in an immaculate tapestry of glory.

They did some more kissies and then knicmkanc showed up and said HEY I HATDE KSISING but he was actually just dad because when the princess kept him hostage she said he could never find love and wasnt allowed it so he got jealous easy. Sevyn knew this and gave him the ring of message and said tp get a girfling of bofyriend or someone and he did ans it was he coral king and they are married now. But its more important that elaiana and vaellus are married because they are otp and goals and everything and this fandom is AWFUL to them so i will make them kiss again in this fanfic.

Eliana and vaellus kissed again and it wa sparkling and rainbowful. Fig was so happy and everyone else was there except mugroin cause i dont want him there anymore soforget he was ever there. Someone else was in lov but im not telling you rando al; my duck game ships but mor characters got married that day or a different day i dont know yet i stil have to thingk about it and be comfortable postign abot my shipz onlen. why i like them: i have been drawn to dragon trainers ever since playing hgss so of course i love this man. also absolutely love his cocky attitude, i think he has such an alluring personality. on a real note he’s so fine he gets me blushing lol oh and his lil tooth that sticks out :33

why i don’t: epitome of every gimmick i hate in battles LOL absolutely hate double battles and hate weather affects even more.

fave episode/movie: didn’t watch the anime after johto and definitely didn’t watch journeys so … no answer and i don’t feel like he appears enough in twilight wings to give an answer lol I’m gonna go with the microsecond he was in gotcha lol

brotp: sonia and raihan. like how he calls her miss clever clogs. i wanna be around to witness their leon gossip sessions lol. hc but i love the idea of them growing up in the gym challenge together and sonia always finding raihan super hilarious while her best friend nessa thought he was so full of himself lol. honestly i think he’s just super popular and social so gets along with every gym leader pretty well

headcanon: talked about this briefly in my tags, but a very special hc to me is that all dragon trainers come from a singular clan before splitting apart where they now live in the different regions. lance and raihan are cousins and are considered the most esteemed and powerful trainers in their clan and have had a friendly rivalry since being kids. despite bickering due their completely different attitudes and outlooks on life and what it means to be a dragon trainer, they also bring out positives in eachother. lance made raihan appreciate the culture of their clan more (which in turn helped him appreciate his vault job even more) and raihan taught lance how to loosen up and not feel so pressured by the very strict johto branch of dragon trainers. oh and he’s also great with kids and kids love him for how goofy he can be lol

wish: definitely wish we saw more of the gentle side of him that’s hinted to be there both via the game and anime.

why i like them: omg. my all time favourite gym leader and in my top 3 galar characters. love that they fed into the concept of alt people being teddy bears despite outwards appearances, reminds me of alot of people i knew growing up in the scene myself. loveee how protective he is of marnie and in general how much he loves his hometown and people around him. just an absolute sweetie 😭

why i dont: actually cant think of one reason or element i dont like, perfect character imo!!! is it basic to say the scene of him singing with no background vocals? why do him like that😭😭😭

headcanon: while always on the more reserved side, i love the idea of younger gym challengers piers being more boisterous (in his own way) and loved the party and gig scene in early spikemuth* - much to the suprise of those who only know him in his adult years. however, when the responsibility of raising marnie came into the picture, he relaxed quite a lot and now his old man tendencies tend to come out even with his fully adult friends and in his relationship. he’s the first people come to when they need advice cause despite being overly cautious and a worry-wart when it comes to marnie, he is quite grounded which comforts a lot of people. what a sweetie!
