I've come to the conclusion that, in my humble opinion, Higashide is the writer in TYPE-MOON who makes the best ships involving Heroic Spirits.

Which might sound really weird. After all, the central couple in Fate/Apocrypha is Sieg/Jeanne d'Arc, and it's a pretty divisive one. No offense to those who like it, but it's always a dynamic I thought made no real sense narratively and didn't have much chemistry. Sieg on his journey of self-affirmation and personhood didn't need a romance (except maybe with Astolfo, with whom the dynamic is much more fun). Jeanne, the historical figure who rejected a marriage proposal, wore male clothing, and whose famous nickname refers to her celibacy, getting into a romance just never vibed with me (especially when it felt like the parallels/relationship between her and Shirou Kotomine were far more relevant). Add to that the ending copying Last Episode without what made LE have a strong impact, and it makes the whole even less appealing.

But despite that, Apo is also the work where there is the surprising ship of Shirou Amakusa and Queen Semiramis of all people: the semi-legendary Assyrian queen credited with making one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world falling in love with the young charismatic Japanese Christian who rebelled against the shogunate and failed. It's a very strange crossover ship between two people who never could have met if not for being brought back and it somehow works in being endearing.

(Achilles and Atalanta kinda count I guess, but it's a one-sided ship with little reasoning, that I care so little about, and is eclipsed by the more compelling foils each get, Chiron for Achilles, Jeanne for a Jackie the Ripper-driven mad Atalante.)

Higaside having grown and improved as a writer by the time of FGO, what followed this growth was him not doing a repeat of Sieg/Jeanne, but writing better ships mostly involving Servants. Asterios the Minotaur and Euryale the Gorgon; last Byzantine emperor Constantine IX and fictional Popess Johanna; heck, you can even see the relationship between Mordred and Dr. Jekyll this way (it also works as simple close friendship). Being characters from usually completely different mythologies and historical cultures, there is care done to make it clear why they fall for each other and as a result these couples are very different from one another instead of being the same formula everytime. In a game where a lot of (female) Servants are made to fall for the last Master of Chaldea for sometimes very little reason, these are a breath of fresh air.

For all my problems with her, Sakurai does something similar, though her ships are usually people who canonically were together in their legends: Sigurd/Brynhild, Aslaug/Ragnar Lodbrok, Julius Caesar/Cleopatra, Ozymandias/Nefertari, Tomoe Gozen/Kiso Yoshinaka, etc. They can be one note and there is a repeated thematic tendency of hers of writing "inhuman woman discovering humanity by falling in love", but they tend to be very cute and I easily understand that these people are in love even beyond death, so I root for them to reunite. Higashide also has "canonical" pairings, but the results are more muddled here: Siegfried and Kriemhild are adorable as a divorced couple where there are clearly still feelings, no matter what the tsundere wife says. But Rama and Sita are just...there. I understand the point of their separation, but it's not very engaging and Rama essentially disappeared after the American Singularity, while Sita was yeeted to Arcade. A mark against Higashide, but not as bad as Sieg/Jeanne and overshadowed by the numbers of better ships he wrote in FGO.

And there's Orion and Artemis, where I'm split. Super Orion and LB Artemis was really good and poignant. Orion the teddy bear and ditzy Artemis are a realy bad joke that overstayed its welcome.

FGO prioritizes Master/Servant relationships, both because the last Master of Chaldea is a blank slate for players to self insert into, and also because human×Servant is the type of ship Nasu specializes in (Shirou/Saber, Rin/Saber, Kuzuki/Caster, Caren/Angra Mainyu, and to a lesser extent Bazett/Cu, Yukika/False Assassin, and Ayako/Medusa in FSN; Fate/Extra as a whole; Ritsuka/Castoria in FGO). But even there Higashide made better choices than when he penned Sieg/Jeanne. Charlotte Corday is a surprisingly well-done choice for her archetype, it seems like it's going to be another Kiyohime but no, he actually makes her a good character you get attached to.

And then there is Kadoc and Anastasia. Words cannot describe how much I love them, how their personalities clash and complement each other in the best way, how aesthetically good they look put next to each other, etc. And it's not even just that we got a MasterxServant relationship outside Ritsuka, though that helped.

Basically, Higashide has become my go-to source for good ships, especially intra-Servants ones where Ritsuka is not involved and characters are allowed to not orbit around their Master. Sakurai also provides in that last aspect, but Higashide is doing that and also giving that crossover flavor you see in things like that one Cartoon Network ad with Johnny Bravo and Velma, and that works really well for me.

FSN

My most cringe prompt: Instead of modern age, the FSN Servants (somehow) got summoned in the Paleothilic, where their Masters are "UNGA BUNGA" people. Like imagine if Saber can't understand what Shirog (Caveboy Shirou) saying. Only Heracles understands caveman language.

(WARNING: MAJOR FSN SPOILERS for people just reading it now) So according to Nasu & Co., Shirou has a very low chance of becoming Archer in any route, the least in HF, with future installments implying that he could become EMIYA Alter instead via Mind of Steel ending in that route. But that does mean it's theoretically possible somewhere in the multiverse. Therefore, I'd like to see an UBW "Bad Ending" where Shirou, after years in spite of Rin at his side, becomes Archer. (Saber can be there too if you want but please keep emphasis on Shirou and Rin's dynamic.) Shirou: Become everything you swore to never be. Question if destiny can truly not be overcome. Your girlfriend begins to recognize parts of the man you never wanted to be in you and her treatment of you shifts accordingly. How do you handle any of that? How do you live with yourself and with knowing what fate awaits you? How does Rin cope with everything? What are the first signs, how well does she handle seeing Shirou slowly turn into her former servant? Knowing Archer asked her to help him and she failed? Is maybe a part of her even happy about it because she misses Archer? Just... Post-UBW Shirou turning into Archer.

(Kinda take in the HF route) Shirou Emiya just arrives at the Gate of Hell after his death due to destroy the Grail. His body was the same as the day he was born (no clothes). Shirou, like many other naked souls just arrived at Lake Acheron, waiting for Charon the ferryman to ferry them. While Shirou has ignore the cries of the souls from the Vestibule of Hell and the ones on the same boat with him. There is one cry that he heard: It was Shinji, who was punished in the 3rd ring of the 7th Circle. (Basically a Shirou meets Shinji again in Hell). Kirei Kotomine is Hell's tour guide, and Shirou gets to beat Shinji up for what he did to Sakura.

I'm sorry I can't promise to watch it, anon, but Fate Apocrypha burned me so hard I just can't do it again. Maybe times will change but until then...

Now, to your question.

I think they're hilariously awful. No, really, they usually just make me laugh.

Fate/Zero makes it work in part because they bring it up explicitly in service to the story.

Artoria's being misidentified as a man in history and having to fulfil a man's role is a central part of the show (where in what I've seen in the other Fates... it's sort of brought up but mostly so that Shirou bangs a woman). Alexander the Great's appearance being wildly different than what is known brings up how legends drift from reality/what little is known about the past and allows him to be neatly characterized as "Sort of Alexander but Not Really, Just Roll with it Viewer" in a way that services the plot. Jeann D'Arc looks exceedingly like Artoria so we get that whole subplot and the fuel for our caster character.

The point being, even though many of the designs originated elsewhere in other parts of the franchise, they work in service to the story in Fate/Zero and make sense.

Everything else I've seen they're bad, just bad, in every respect.

First you have the fact that we get a lot of same-face in the Fate universe. There are characters who look exactly like one another and, not coincidentally, tend to have the same tropes/archetypes associated with them. You get sabre-face, berserker-face, caster-face, the list goes on and while there are artistic tropes and styles associated with kinds of characters they should look distinct.

Then they just often go off the walls with little to no explanation. Hans Christian Andersen, you know that guy who was a real person, yeah, he's now a blue-haired toddler who looks like he escaped from a toy store.

Half the characters are now women, which would be nice for gender diversity, except that they seem to be a different gender for sexy purposes.

Achilles? He's this guy who's oddly skinny looking and uh... not a Greek warrior.

And let's not talk about Nero, shall we?

Now, to Enkidu. I'll admit that one first had me doing a double take and going "ah, another Fate character design". And "not how I pictured Enkidu :/". However, I then heard that his appearance takes after the whore, and that he is some eldritch terrifying beast in truth, and that is a good explanation for me and also nice in that he still retains this strange otherworldly beauty and a face he's stolen from someone else.

I’m watching fate apocrypha on Netflix and my mind keeps on going back to fate aporypha abridged because it’s so funny.

Fate Apocrypha, and Fate/Stay Night abridged is hilarious! I go back and watch FSN abridged every few months, when I need a good laugh.   

Have you read the Light novels for Fate Apocrypha? I honestly think the anime is just ok, I wish that A1 pictures had three or four seasons to tell Fate Apocrypha’s story, it honestly could have used it haha.

Epilogue Event - Red Faction Servants

So I was thinking about how the Fate/Apocrypha anime (I can’t speak to the LN and manga) implies Achilles/Atalante and how I hate it a whole lot, and I realized ignoring the ship pushing actually makes the show better.

For why I dislike it, first on Atalante’s side. In myth, she was literally so uninterested in marrying that she convinced her father to let her race every potential suitor and would only marry the one who beat her. The guy who won only did because he fucking cheated (thanks Aphrodite you fucking cabbage) Her whole myth is about how she was rad and kickass and independent. On top top of that, in Fate/ she is entirely focused on her goal of saving children and never expresses any interest in Achilles (A common complaint about het ships for me tbh, female agency is a myth, they’re simply something to be won by the male counterpart.)

As for Achilles, he’s one of several figures that dusty old cis male historians bend over backwards to explain away obvious gay. He literally went from refusing to fight at all to literally fighting so furiously the gods had to intervene when his best buddy Patroclus was killed. After he also died, their remains were mixed together there is nothing straight about this. You could argue him being bisexual due to being distracted by Penthesilea’s beauty and calling Atalante pretty, but these are both pretty minor attachments vs Patroclus and also my above complaints re: Atalante stand.

SO if you ignore all implication of romantic interest, look at their most poignant scene, their last one. Achilles doesn’t rampage after Atalante’s death, as he in theory would have for someone he loved. Instead he just mourns her, as a fellow strong warrior, one with a “beautiful dream.” As someone he respected and liked for what they stood for and how strongly they stood for it. It’s about a million times more poignant than what Het Nonsense™ would imply, i.e. its SO SAD that this GIRL is dying because the BOY thought she was PRETTY. Atalante’s dream is very specific, very ambitious, very noble, and VERY integral to her character. Achilles’ dream (to live as a hero) is much vaguer and self-focused, really he’s just here to have a good time and look cool. A dream like Atalante’s is one he maybe doesn’t fully understand but he thinks it’s beautiful. This is all literally right there in the show, but the vague suggestion of romance draws attention away from it, so lets just ignore it.

I've been sitting on this achievement for about 4-5 days now, and my best Rider honestly deserves better than that, I think. Then again, considering his own myth and how he took Patroclus' passing as hard as he did, I know he wouldn't blame me for my writing being quiet.

Still wondering if I've really been feeling my grandpa's spirit hug me from behind every time I sing the Vietnamese hymm to let him go onto Nirvana leading up to the 49th day of death...

Ah well. The least I can do is write for him again with what energy I have.

Sometimes, Achilles could still remember the unease. The unending discord, the quiet foreboding. Even his goddess mother Thetis had cried tears over such things, much to his small, lingering regret as he went on to be the hero she wished him not to be.

It wasn't an unfamiliar feeling either, but it didn't make it any less uncomfortable when sensing it start to trickle down his spine at the sight of Vy wordlessly offering yet another Bond Chalice to him, smiling through the fatigued lines and dark shadows underneath her eyes. He knew she was a selfless, caring girl like that, giving Servants food and rest like they were people and not just heroes, but Achilles wondered sometimes, when the exact moment was in her life where she stopped looking after herself.

There was only so much Novum Chaldea could do, and "enough" was still a subjective term for things with the Foreign God lingering on the horizon like a motherfucking demon that really needed to get her head out of her ass.

Even then, the exasperated smile tugging at his lips was real as he reached past the rainbow flame, past the gold cup keeping him in the room, to rest his hands underneath the arms of the oh-so-human girl who summoned him.

Before, in another world, he had to serve a priest who had far too lofty goals for Achilles' liking, probably as nothing more than an extra bodyguard if Amakusa Shirou Tokisada had anything to say on the matter. Or Semiramis, being such a pompous, dishonest queen. How Atalante agreed to working with them back then was beyond Achilles.

Here, however, in a world that was Bleached beyond repair, he could at least be another Hero, a successful one this time, to a girl who deserved to be saved at least once.

Achilles could see Vy's lips move in a wordless cry of his nickname (heck, their bond could let him hear her voice it without it taking physical sound waves in the softest, sweetest tone, even when he knew she would only ever love one Hero as a man in her heart) once he lifted her up from her place trying to hand him another gift, letting the Bond Chalice fall to the floor of the Enhancement Center with a clatter. In his arms, she squirmed, looking more like a child than a weakened, traumatized Master with her loose ponytail and the wide look in her brown eyes that reflected his image. Still, her hands rested on his shoulders, not even giving a sign of resistance as he brought her close to him.

Bump, went their foreheads.

"Silly Master," he whispered in response to the questioning muu that Vy made as he closed his eyes. "You gotta remember you matter before you lose your voice trying to give me things."

I won't treat you like I did Penthesilea. Never.

Vy croaked a soft, "A..." just as Achilles bumped their heads together again. "Achi..."

"No buts, Princess," he continued, adjusting his grip so that she was protectively nestled into his chest, her hair tickling the side of his neck. Her waist was tiny in his arms, thin despite the muscle and taut flexing that served as proof of her training outside the simulator. "I told you with the first Bond Chalice, remember? I lost one love before." No. Maybe two, when counting the Great Holy Grail War. But still. He rested a hand in those long brown locks of hair, stroking it quietly. "I'm not going to stand losing you."

Achilles only let himself relax and press his cheek into the top of Vy's hair once he heard the squeaked, "O... Okay."

It was something, at least.

To be powerful. To be sheltered. To be your equal. Figure it out and it’s easy to get them by your side. To get a whole kingdom by your side. It all falls down eventually.”

They stop. No doubt, they would have gone on for longer, if not for the sword in their stomach.

“Speak less.” Saber growls. “Dodge more.”

“Well, that’s rude. I was speaking.” Berserker frowns. “Also, it hurts. I mean I know that’s the point, but like, dick move.”

Saber forces more on the hilt, and Berserker groans when the blade pierces their back.

“Shut up.” Saber is always emotionless when fighting. Like a machine. But this isn’t fighting; Berserker still isn’t making a move to defend themself. This is a murder. And maybe that’s why anger seeps through her voice. “I have no interest in listening to the ramblings of a madman.”

“Shoulda figured that out.” They cough. There’s something red at the corner of their lips. It might be blood. It looks too bright. It looks like fire. “After all, your arrogance is legendary. Imagine being conceited enough to believe you alone could bring the fall of a whole-ass kingdom-!”

“Shut UP!”

Saber dislodges the sword and swipes. It cuts through Berserker, a neat diagonal, from shoulder to hip. The flesh is out for everyone to see and red is splattered all over the ground all over saber and it’s still flowing it’s still flowing- “You don’t know a thing about me.”

And-

Berserker-

staggers, forward, still unthreatening-

and their hands close around the invisible sword’s hilt (as if they could see it as if they knew it well) around Saber’s hands. Their palms are covered in their own blood. It has to be warm on Saber’s skin. It has to be sticky on Saber’s skin.

And Berserker falls forward, leans forward, lips to Saber’s ear, and Shirou can’t hear and Rin can’t hear but they whisper-

“I know you hate the feeling of blood on your hands.” An idiot with a smug smile on their face. An idiot with a smile and too much knowledge-

Artoria pushes them off and steps back. She’s not afraid. She’s not afraid. She’s not afraid.

(Not even her own knights knew that.)

F/GO High School/Modern AU BS

Me and @rex101111 have been talking about a modern/HS AU ft. as many Chaldean servants as possible. Here are the ideas we came up with (I am pretty much cut and pasting our message convo, so this is a mixture of both me and Rex's ideas):

Gil is the douchbag Senior everyone hates but his dad owns the school or whatever so he can do whatever he wants. The only decent person who willingly hangs out with him is his childhood friend Enkidu who's hoping he can un-douch his bro. He has kid Gil as his little brother and Caster Gil as his older bro who both agree that he sucks (Gil is the loser middle child of the family), Caster Gil wonders what Enkidu sees in his shit head brother. "He's too good for you." "Blow it out your ass." "One day he's going to wise up, see how much of a shit you are, and when you're all alone don't come crying to me." Caster Gil is in college studying political science, Kid Gil goes to a fancy boarding school. Archer Gil goofs off and throws parties

Scathach is a swimming class teacher, mainly b/c I recall underwater training being a part of Cu's regiment under her tutelage. People were jealous of the Cus for like two seconds when they find out the swim teacher is their mom, then they see her having them do an extra twenty laps and ignoring when OG Cu starts floating in the water. "CU DIED!" "YOU'RE NOT HUMAN!" while Scathach is like "you have two seconds to stop playing around before I ACTUALLY drown you" and he's back to doing laps.

Yeah with 4-5 Cus (if you count Setanta from Arcade) that is like 5 brothers.

Nightingale as school nurse, she is friends with Asclepius who works at a hospital associated with the school (strictly professional, but the students think otherwise).

Side note, keep in mind you can have multiple servants be the same type of teacher, just for different classes/grades.

King Hassan is the old Religious History teacher. Every one thinks he's older then the rock is the school is made out of. He has a scary face and a scarier voice but most students consider him the most fair and patient teacher in the whole school. He always gets a lot of food gifts before Ramadan form the students. (A few students, such as the Guda twins and Mash, call him gramps.) The other Hassans are his grandkids, like actual grandkids. He's super strict with them because he expects a lot from them. He always praises them when they do well though. He made sure they ALL got into his class and they've been living in fear ever since. They love their grandpa but by Allah they know not to disappoint him. The only one to ever get out of anything is kid Hassan (one of the hundred face). The three Avenger Nobus are three different people. 1st Ascension is basically Archer Nobu, then you got Oda Kipposhi, and then the mom is Ascension 3 with Demon King Nobunaga. The youngest Ascension 1 Nobu is a musician. Demon King Nobu is one of those "super scary but also super polite people that only makes them scarier" type, basically a female koei Nobunaga from samurai warriors (check out some cutscenes form the games with him, he's a treat).

For Siduri, there's a bunch of rumors she's dating Caster Gil but it's strictly professional, Caster respects her too much to consider that. Archer Gil hits on her relentlessly, she manages to wound his ego more severely then anyone else simply by being unfailingly polite in her rejections and treating him like what he is, a teenage punk jumping higher than he can handle to land.

Ibaraki is Shuten's adoptive little sister after she was taken from an abusive mother, hence why Ibaraki looks up to her. Ibuki is either Shuten's big sister who had to take on a guardian role, or just her mom. Shuten and Ibuki have a bit of a strained relationship because Shuten saw the way Ibuki acted as they grew up, taking more and more responsibilities onto herself and refusing any distractions. And she decided that her biggest nightmare is to wake up one morning and realize she's turned into Ibuki so she tries to do everything to avoid that, hence their relationship not being the best. Ibaraki is kinda stuck in the middle because she wants to side with Shuten but she sees where Ibuki is coming from. Messy.

Caren is still Kotomine’s daughter, but he isn’t a good dad and in rebellion she sleeps around despite being a woman of god. Including sleeping with local punk Angra Mainyu. Angra Mainyu seems like a bad guy but he has a shit load of issues due to being blamed for everything going wrong in his old town, eventually coming to believe them and thinking he will cause nothing but problems. Caren banging him gives him a type of closeness he’s never felt, but under very warped circumstances.

For the Tamamo family, Vitch totally fucked her way up a corporate ladder or something, imagined Tamamo Cat working at a Cat Cafe if she were a Student. Tamamo no Mae accidentally fed her prev BF a food he was allergic too, and that kind of haunted her and scared her rep. IDK basically she seriously fucked up a previous relationship, either on purpose or accidentally, and that kind of hurts her deeply so she wants to start over with Hakuno.

Nero and Tamamo no Mae are rivals over this one guy.

Kiichi Hougen is the adoptive mom, Benkei is the family friend/uncle, Taira is Ushiwaka's older sister. Taira isn't on the best of terms with her family, some drama way back caused a rift and nowadays Ushi is the only one who's willing to talk to her and visit. Benkei never lets her go alone because he doesn't trust Taira one bit. Taira and Ushiwaka are Kintoki and Tomoe's cousins (I say Tomoe b/c apparently her husband and Ushiwaka were half cousins, with their grandpa having kids with their grandmas. I tried to make a whole family tree out of a few servants).

Favorite Friendship: I don't know if this means canon or not, so I'm gonna safely say Achilles and Atalanta. Oh don't get me wrong, I ship them too; their friendship just...I love it.

Character I Most Identify With: Heroic Spirit EMIYA. ...He hated his past self, and questioned if what he was doing really was the right thing to do. He literally tried to eradicate himself from existence. I haven't, but...I understand why he did what he did. He's cynical and an asshole, but he cares for people close to him and wants an ending where the majority of people are happy. Furthermore, he found some closure in the UBW Route with Shirou, signalling that he's made peace with himself over what he's done up until this point. The small character growth was REAL.

Character I Wish I Could Be: No one. Strange, right? I think everyone has their own personal hell to deal with, and that it's their battle to fight. I can't imagine having to go through what each of them has. (Okay I said no one, but c'mon can you imagine being Astolfo with a big ass hippogrif [I spelled that wrong] as your mount? Fucking awesome - )

I still REALLY like the idea that Type Moon should incorporate the story of the Loathly Lady into Diarmuid’s canon lore (specifically the bit about how he DEFINITELY used the Holy Grail to heal her and lost his memories of his life with her in the process) and I want to hear a lot more about Dagda’s cauldron

I also really want more Robin Hood Lore but that isn’t quite a headcanon...

I definitely think Merlin has pointed ears (ajolote frills are a MUST) and sharp teeth that he disguises

I definitely think that Mash was raised Jewish.

It might be officially confirmed someday but I definitely think that Rider Nero is one of the Evils of Humanity. 

I also think that “Nameless” in Extella is definitely just Archer!Shirou Emiya going through a SUPER edgy phase.

I don’t believe a word about that Waverface in the Ionian Hetairoi being a different guy - like, they can write all the retcons they want, but you can’t tell me that when they wrote that scene, that wasn’t intended to be a grown Waver.

Absolutely LOVE the headcannon (idk if this was ever confirmed or not?) that Emiya participated in the Trojan War alongside other agents of the Counterforce such as Ajax just because Achilles’s rage at the death of Patrolocus threatened the very foundation of the World.
