#I love Irish but the way gender works is...not very intuitive

everyone complains about grammatical genders in languages like French or Spanish but Irish manages to make it even more of a headache. At least in romance languages the article tells you what gender it is. But in Irish the article is the same regardless, you only know the gender because the word itself changes in certain contexts.
#you add an urú to a noun after this phrase but ONLY if the noun is feminine#I love Irish but the way gender works is...not very intuitive

so i think i found the thing i'm irrationally pretentious about.
as we should all know by now, i am a massive tolkien nerd. i am not pretentious about tolkien as such. i will happily explain elrond's entire family tree in order to get to that one pun at the end of the akallabeth. i am still working my way through the andy serkis lotr and enjoying it greatly (when my auditory processing will allow), movie-cast voices and all.
(in the process, i have decided that -- okay, so i have several covers of the song "loch lomond" on my phone, because part of my family emigrated from there about 275 years ago and i'm like that. they are mostly in Generic Scottish Accent ^TM. one is bafflingly in Generic Irish Accent ^TM and came from a gas station mix cd of otherwise irish (and irish-american) songs. however! the first three chapters of rotk, which i have now reached, are in pippin pov. this means i have been listening to a *lot* of andy serkis's billy boyd impression. which means the concept has finally percolated through my brain that "loch lomond", being about a location very near glasgow, really ought properly to be covered in a glaswegian accent -- every vowel crimped off with pliers and tossed out through the roof of your mouth [affectionate].)
anyway! that is not actually the part i'm pretentious about. but in addition to imprinting on tolkien's love of linguistics in general and his opinions on localization (positive) in particular, ten-year-old jt imprinted very strongly on the fundamental concept of elvish word order that, when there are multiple possible ways to say something, you pick the one that sounds the prettiest, and/or looks the best written down.
in practice, this applies for me mainly to neologisms, because most older words have firmly enough established connotations that there's often a single best one for a specific use case.
so, descending from the general to the particular: i cannot stand the word "queerplatonic". it appears to be the word we have, and i don't actually have a better suggestion, but!
(1) it's not intuitive to people who aren't already familiar with the concept. they have to ask what it's even supposed to mean, and then "how does that differ from friendship", and then they get torn to pieces for not already being informed, and nobody is any the wiser.
(2) it only applies to asexual relationships. i'm, if not allosexual, closer to that than to asexual, and you *cannot* ask me with a straight face to try to wedge the concept of "sexual partner" into a word that explicitly evokes the current english connotations of "platonic". a word that is supposed to be The word for committed nonromantic relationships should cover the ones that are *just* nonromantic. (one could perhaps attempt the addition of "queerromantic" and "queersexual" but please god no *ahem* i mean, i hope the idea of those parallel constructions helps demonstrate why i feel like this is a Bad construction and does not communicate the concept it intends to. "queersexual" especially sounds like it belongs to an entirely different family of concepts, such as being queer in sexual orientation in addition to or rather than queer in gender identity.)
and (3) -- this is the part i feel i am probably being tolkienaically pretentious about -- it's hideous on the tongue. "rpl" is not a phoneme set anybody should have to apply to themselves. "kweerp" is a fine noise by itself, especially if you're a frog or a bird (excellent creatures all), but it feels like it wants to stop there.

Do you have a vlog? No. I have no interest in being a vlogger/YouTuber. Plus, my vlogs would be incredibly boring.
If not, have you ever considered starting a vlog? Nope. Like I said, they’d be incredibly boring. I also just don’t want to be in the front of the camera and I wouldn’t feel comfortable uploading videos like that about myself.
Did you go to AM or PM kindergarten? I remember going in the morning.
What are your favorite youtube channels to watch? I have several--from vloggers to lifestyle videos to ASMRtists.
Which relative(s) do you look the most like? My mom.

Who was your best friend in high school? I had a couple my freshman and sophomore year and then it changed my junior and senior year.

𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘 !
seventh child and only daughter of arthur and molly. first girl born into the weasley fam for GENERATIONS, so that makes her special. had too many brothers. biggest grievance was they never let her play quidditch with them, so she broke into their shed and taught herself. cried every single time they went to hogwarts without her.
eventually got there herself. her first year notoriously SUCKED.
if ‘sucked’ is a good enough word to describe being possessed by tom riddle and opening the chamber of secrets, which ultimately led to a lot of people almost dying, including herself.
this, understandably, royally fucked ginny’s shit up. easily seen by her extra special hysterical reaction to the dementors. didn’t do much in her second yr other than be upset by them on the train and be hermione granger 2.0 ( overachiever extraordinaire ).
fully supported harry potter during his fourth year, when he became the unwitting fourth champion. would have gone to the yule ball with him if she hadn’t pledged herself to neville longbottom, who goes on to become one of her best friends.
got all up in order business in her fourth year, against her parents wishes. you can take the girl from the rebellion but you can’t take the rebellion from the girl. joined dumbledore’s army. also named it. became a royal pain in umbridge’s ass. was super talented at spells ( she’s special ) that they were being taught. had a rough christmas cos her dad almost got killed by voldemort’s ugly snake. hexed draco malfoy and still giggles about it to this day. fought off death eaters in the department of mysteries and was witness to sirius black’s death.
everyone rly wanted a piece of ginny in her fifth year ( understandable ). she got invited to slug club. was also made chaser of the gryffindor quidditch team ( after playing seeker the previous year when harry was banned ). she dated harry for a hot minute after she finally got rid of dean thomas ( srry dean ), but... after dumbledore died and death eaters attacked the school he broke up with her to ‘protect her’ which... sucked.
honestly. summer in general sucked. her bro got attacked by a werewolf. her boyfriend dumped her for her own good. there was a wedding, for some reason.
sixth year also sucked. the da was reformed ( by ginny & her friends ) but could only do so much in the face of the gross misuse of power by grown ass adults. ginny did all that she could even when they were actively torturing them all, but was made go into hiding at easter.
followed her fam to hogwarts for the battle. almost had to sit the whole thing out, but ran off after she was forced to leave the room of requirement.
let’s recap the battle real quick : her brother? died. her friends? died. the love of her life? never even said goodbye and died. ginny? almost died! she did not have a good time. 0/10 stars on yelp, in fact. but they prevailed! they made harry proud! love when you succeed and get ptsd for your troubles.
ginny helped rebuild hogwarts over the summer, and went back in september to finish her seventh year, but... it wasn’t really home anymore. a war will do that. loss will do that. she was trying very hard to be okay - and in a lot of ways, trying a little too hard to be who she had ALWAYS been. she probably could have done with being told that no one expected her to be unchanged, but... everyone was going through their own stuff.
she tried to honor the one’s that they lost by living, but... that was easier on paper. ginny didn’t seem to make it all the way through the five stages of grief. she was angry, and she was sad, but she couldn’t deny it and she couldn’t change it - and acceptance was impossible. her grief turned into a persistent feeling of emptiness, and that took a toll on her, as a person.
a lot that made her happy once didn’t, anymore. she was scouted by the holyhead harpies fresh out of hogwarts, but when they asked her to sign, she didn’t immediately take them up on the offer. quidditch was about the only thing she had left at that point that brought her some measure of joy, and it felt...surreal, to be considering taking such a small pleasure and turning it into her life work. it felt not right, for some reason. doing something so ‘normal’ felt insulting, almost, to all the people who wouldn’t do anything normal again - but she couldn’t do nothing forever, and eventually, she was convinced.
she took the offer. she never looked back. things haven’t really gotten better in all the time since then, but at least they can’t get any worse.
𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 ! / talk of scars & death & trauma.
ginny’s scars tell more stories about her life at hogwarts than she has ever uttered. from her first year, she has marks that she can’t name the cause of. scarring along her thighs and upon her fingertips that were obtained in some of her black outs, that her parents BEGGED madam pomfrey to remove, but who she quietly told to not bother. there’s a small dent on her forehead that she sustained when she collapsed in the chamber of secrets, and you wouldn’t see it, if you weren’t looking. she doesn’t point it out.
of course, she sustained some in her fourth year. she fell over during a dumbledore’s army session and she scraped up the palm of her hand, something that they all laughed about, back then. she broke her ankle badly enough that it continues to click, even now, but luckily was never a hassle in her chosen career. maybe she’d have been even worse of, if bellatrix had tortured her like planned. ginny counts her blessings.
but it’s her sixth year that ruined her. that instilled within her a LOVE of long sweaters and a fear of being seen entirely naked. ‘blood traitor’ is carved into her right arm from lines she was FORCED to write with her own blood, over and over, after being caught putting graffiti on the side of green house number five. she didn’t cry, to them. she didn’t shed a tear. along her back there are criss cross scars from the CRACK of a whip, so many of them that ginny still closes her eyes when she’s getting into the bathtub, so she doesn’t catch a glimpse in the mirror. she’s been suspended by her ankles, by her wrists, and she has the taut skin there to show for it, and under one instance of the cruciatus curse, she FELL and sustained two wounds most commonly paired together in her thoughts - a scar along her left cheekbone, and a gnarly one upon her knee.
the war scarred her too. scarred her deeper. scarred her truer. she has more now than she can possibly remember that serve as a reminder to the war that they fought, together - and she tries to be proud of them. she really does. but even she finds it difficult.
ginny still keeps a bag packed and ready to go at the drop of a hat under her bed, just in case she has to run. it’s a habit instilled in her by her parents from when they went into hiding, and it’s one that she’s finding almost impossible to break. she still sleeps with her wand underneath her pillow every night, fingers curled around the wood - terrified, always, to be caught without it.
her nightmares vary, but they’re there. sometimes she wakes in a cold sweat, blinking away the MEMORY of green light that came all too close to finishing her off. sometimes, all she can see is the rotting body of her older brother and his open, vacant eyes. sometimes it’s harry, and he’s all alone, and she’s screaming at him - just screaming and crying and begging him to turn around and stop and come back, but he never does. sometimes she’s back in the dungeons of hogwarts, hanging by her ankles, and when she’s shakily sipping coffee in the morning, she can still hear the carrow twins laughter in her ears, clear as day.
she’s suffered from sleep paralysis, too, though this predates the war and began in the weeks after the chamber of secrets. her limbs too heavy to move, the demon that stands over her is tom riddle - her longest and most withstanding nightmare. she’s ashamed of the fact that though she fears she’s forgotten the exact sound of fred’s laugh or the feel of harry’s hand in hers, she’ll never be able to forget the features of sixteen year old voldemort.
ginny can throw off the cruciatus curse, now, and perhaps can even resist imperio. she’s never wanted to TRY, but after the many times it was used upon them in her sixth year.. she believes it possible.
she trained to be an animagus, more out of… boredom, than anything else. she’s registered as an orange tabby cat, and it’s not uncommon for her to run off in this form in the direction of the lake, where she can sit for hours.
ginny is bloody awful at all of the things her mother tried to teach her. knitting, cooking, general housework. she would sit for HOURS with molly in the lead up to christmas, a pair of knitting needles held awkwardly in both hands, fingers incapable of making the loops and stitches that molly is so skilled at doing, until SHE had all the christmas jumpers done… and ginny only had a rather pathetic excuse of a scarf. similarly, she tried many a time to lend a hand in the kitchen, or memorize the recipe and replicate her mothers famous homemade fudge - almost always creating some sort of inedible goop at the end of it all. she tries, god bless her, but she just doesn’t seem to have the knack that came so EASILY to molly, and years ago after a particularly disastrous attempt at knitting the weasley family matching jumpers that ended with tears all around, ginny gave up that particular hobby.
she can garden, though. BOY can she garden. neville taught her how to take care of plants she thought were beautiful, and when she moved into her little bedsit, ginny pulled up the entire garden in her allotment - redoing it in her image. she spends hours out there, knee deep in mud, hands covered, and she comes in, sunburnt, smiling, blazing and beautiful. it’s such a simple joy to her, but it is one, nonetheless.
she always had an interest in muggles. ginny idolized her father ( and still, perhaps, does ), and some of her earliest memories were of clambering onto piles of scrap in the burrows yard, just to peek through the little dusty window on arthur’s shed and watch as he tinkered with some new muggle artifact. she was the one who told fred and george about the car, you know - though she never thought even for a MOMENT that they would end up driving it.
she learned the concept of ‘stick and poke’ tattoos from a worn out fiction book she borrowed from hermione, and learned how to replicate them with a good quill, some magical ink and a couple good spells. she gave herself her own one, in fact - the little snitch inside of the crook of her left arm, that isn’t a perfect circle, but still manages to glow BRIGHT when the conditions are perfect for quidditch. she got pretty good at them, too, giving many of her classmates their own magical tattoos as the years went by - though, like many things that brought her joy, she stopped doing them after the battle of hogwarts.

faceclaim: charlie co
❝ they’ve got the devil in them. ❞ . . . ( h i s t or y )
we’re going with the tv version of matt because uhhhhh sometimes the comics confused me and also i love jack murdock with all my heart.
matt murdock was born and raised in the heart of hell’s kitchen to ‘battlin’ jack murdock and maggie grace
we’re gonna skip over maggie going nutso and attacking matty from the comics but ! she did experience post-partum depression and leave matt and his father to go join the church as a nun
matt is raised by jack alone. they don’t have much, as they live off of the pay checks jack receives from his boxing matches, but matt grows up with a father who dotes on him.
when matt was younger, he was involved in an accident. he pushed an old man out of the way of an out of control truck. as a result, he was hit by the truck and the radioactive acid that the truck was carrying blinded him.
he completely lost sight in his eyes, but because of the radioactive nature of the acid the truck was carrying, the rest of matt’s senses became enhanced to a superhuman degree. he developed a skill called radar sense, which allowed him to “see” his surroundings through the his other senses and intuition.
not too long after this, battlin’ jack took a gamble in a big fight against a young opponent. he promised the irish mob that he’d throw the fight, but refused to because matt was in the audience. he won the fight, put away his winnings for matt, and was later shot and killed in the alley outside their home and was found by matt.
matt then went to an orphanage run by the catholic church that his mother worked at. he jumped from foster home to foster home but never stayed in one for very long and eventually aged out of the orphanage.
throughout this time, matt was trained by a man named stick who taught him several different styles of martial arts and how to best utilize his ‘radar sense’.
eventually, matt went on to collage and graduated with a law degree from columbia law. he became a defense attorney and started up his own firm with his college roommate and best friend, franklin ‘foggy’ nelson, which they named ‘nelson & murdock’.
around this same time, matt began to see the suffering around hell’s kitchen. he decided to take up a mask and begin doing something about the crimes in his neighborhood. his simple black suit eventually morphed into his iconic red costume and, thus, the devil of hell’s kitchen was born.
❝ so, forgive me, father ❞ . . . ( p e r s o n a l i t y )
pretty boy. he’s a charmer when he wants to be. he will play it off as unintentional, but he loves it when he catches someone’s interest. he’s a good looking dude and he knows it. the ladies know it. the guys know it. he’s not afraid to use it.
when he’s not trying to get on people’s good side, he can be rather curt and closed-off. this can be taken as rude, but mostly, he just doesn’t bother using his energy to be polite when he doesn’t see a need to. if he doesn’t trust you, there is no way he’s allowing himself to let his guard down.
he cares a lot about other people. he has to be in order to be able to put everyone else’s lives ahead of his own. he is fiercely protective of the people of his neighborhood and will go to many lengths to take care of the people he loves.
he has his boundaries, however. his business remains solely in hell’s kitchen. he doesn’t tend to get involves in any of the bigger villains that he knows other vigilantes sometimes wind up dealing with ( *cough cough* looking at you, webs *cough cough* ). he knows his limits and in the end, he is still only human. on the flip side though, he also does not like anyone else encroaching in his territory. hell’s kitchen are his people and he will deal with them.
he has a matyr complex. absolutely will sacrifice himself for the greater good of his community and he never learns when enough is enough. he’ll get the shit beaten out of him and keep coming back for more. probably stems from deeply-rooted childhood trauma but eh.
his personality almost seems to split. there is a distinct difference between the kindly blind lawyer who takes up cases pro bono, and daredevil, the man without fear. matt himself doesn’t actual know which one is closer to who he actually is as a person.
❝ for i have sinned. ❞ . . . ( t l : d r )
if you’ve made it here, please pat yourself on the back for me ! basically, he’s a blind lawyer with a hard-on for justice in whatever way he can serve it. don’t let his pretty face fool you, he will get the shit beaten out of him and try to convince you he fell down the stairs. he is 6′0′’ of coffee, vengeance, and a hearty belief that the lord has forsaken him. pls love him he needs it <3

TMR TALKS TO... Kitt Philippa | The Most Radicalist
In this interview feature, we get to know the most radicalist up and coming stars on the planet. This time we caught up with Northern Irish multi-instrumentalist Kitt Philippa. We recently featured this musician, songwriter, singer and producer with the release of their singularly captivating single ‘Fahrenheit'. This electronically-driven track was intricately composed in theatrical fashion, showcasing Kitt’s intuitive songwriting style. What’s more, ‘Fahrenheit’ gave us our first taste of the forthcoming Human LP. We’re expecting a few more electronic moments on the record, although Kitt is passionate about expressing stylistic variety as much as possible as so strains of their You EP can also be found, which should come as good news for fans of that previous release. Notably, and unsurprisingly, the album will feature title-track ‘Human’, as heard on the aforementioned EP and also lauded as Single of the Year 2018 by the Northern Irish Music Prize. With all signs pointing north, we’re getting ahead of the full record release and learning more about the industrious Kitt Philippa in the interview below.
TMR: Hey Kitt, how are you? Hello, I always find this question has an impressively broad scope; currently I am focused on these questions! Thanks so much for asking me to be involved. TMR: We recently featured ‘Fahrenheit’ as a List Pick, a track that is quite different from your previous material. Does this feel like a turning point for you sonically? Yes, thank you very much for that, I really appreciated it. I am constantly developing both as a person and a musician. ‘Fahrenheit’ is certainly more electronically based than most of my previous work, but I have an extremely wide appreciation of music and sound so, for me, it is just a continued exploration. TMR: How does ‘Fahrenheit’ fit in the span of the Human LP? Are there similar styles, sounds or themes? The sounds within ‘Fahrenheit’ are quite unique - I’m not sure another track on the album featured the woodblock, for example. ‘Fahrenheit’ is very detailed and this is something that is prevalent in all the tracks. Thematically, a form of searching, or trying to understand, is shared most notably with ‘L’. The LP’s namesake, ‘Human’, is also electronically based. TMR: The way you describe your music is fascinating, for example “I very much see all the individual parts like components of a greater structure - they have their own characters.” Have you always viewed song creation this way? I think so. It’s probably due to detail; in ‘Fahrenheit’ some of those details are quite contrasting - but they occur very naturally together. The interactions and formations within tracks can be very interesting. On the new record, the penultimate track, ‘Atlas’, becomes orchestral at the end; it felt important to have a plurality of instrumental voices to express the intentions of the track. TMR: An unprecedented amount of public figures are embracin their non-binary identities, such as Sam Smith. Is the industry more accessible to all genders in your opinion? Or what still needs to be done to level the playing field and create avenues for everyone? Listening to a variety of respectful thoughts and experiences will contribute to a society that understands the people within it. TMR: With each release, there’s been a noticeable progression towards electronic sounds. What’s inspired this? It hasn’t been a conscious decision from me, at least - I love working with all sounds. Within more electronic based genres; I enjoy the production on much of Mura Masa, Flume and FKA Twigs’ records. We are influenced a lot by our surroundings and the mediums that are most accessible to us. TMR: It must have been affirming to have three songs from your upcoming Human LP nominated for Best Song by the Northern Irish Music Prize? Very much so, yes; it is very encouraging. It is wonderful to be a part of something that celebrates music from Northern Ireland. I am also very grateful to those who have supported and shared the music. I make music primarily out of a need; to then offer it to others and for that response to be appreciation is special. TMR: There’s a great tradition of folk music in Northern Ireland, was this what encouraged you to first pick up an instrument? I was first interested in pressing an instrument: the keys of the piano in my house. It was simply the sound itself (of my mum playing) that drew me to my first instrument. Seeing orchestras perform and being able to hear a fairly broad scope of sound, from a young age, is something that I’m very grateful for. Northern Ireland has a lot of great music within it and the variety is deepening. TMR: What’s the last song you listened to? ‘Initium’ by Keaton Henson. TMR: Is there anywhere that listeners can catch you for a live performance in the near future? Yes - London: Set Dalston on Wednesday 23rd October and Dublin: The Sugar Club on Tuesday 26th november - thank you.

[ * NATALIA FALINE BARTON
“ - so pretty. so smart. what a waste of a young heart.“
NAME:
[ NATALIA ] — russian. unusual in most cultures and societies. named after rylie’s step mom.[ FALINE ] — meaning ‘in charge’ in irish. named after bailey’s mother.[ BARTON ] — a soulful, expressive name. people with this name have an inner need for quiet and peace. they analyze the world, and work towards finding deeper truths.
BIRTHDATE:
19th December
GENDER:
cis female
APPEARANCE:
[ HAIR ] — wavy, luscious and beautiful, just like rylie’s. bailey is often quite jealous of rylie and natalia’s hair, for it always falls the perfect way and they can rock it long or short. currently, natalia has it cut short, after seeing photos of rylie with short hair.
[ EYES ] — a dark green, and even more accentuated with her cut hair. her eyes are round and big.
[ HEIGHT ] — five foot three inches.
PERSONALITY:
+ UNDERSTANDING ; natalia is greatly empathetic. she has a special talent with just understanding people and being able to help them. most people are drawn to her due to her kind and easy going demeanour. she keeps her eyes out for everyone. because she is an older sister to daniel, she takes it upon herself to be a big sister to everyone in some way or another.
- EMOTIONAL ; she has a lot of trouble staying out of her head at times. sometimes she sinks far, far into a slump and it’s almost impossible to draw her out. sometimes, natalia takes days, weeks, or even months to return back to the girl you once met. it’s something that’s always been a part of her, although she’s working to change it. she knows that can make her slightly unreliable to friends, or seem like she’s not always completely there.
SPECIAL TALENTS:
SHARED VISION: what really keeps natalia in tune with her brother is the fact that they both literally share the same mind wave. they can see each other’s paths, and lives, and feel each other’s emotions. although it annoyed them when they were younger, to literally be connected and not be able to control it, as they’ve grown older they find it to be a good way to look out for one another.
EMPATHIC MIMICRY: due to how in tune natalia is with everyone’s emotions, its no surprise that her power is that she’s able to literally mimic other people’s empathy, or cast her on upon others. however, it isn’t just emotions she can mimic, but other people’s powers. whilst her mother, bailey, could imitate animals and was always working towards being able to mimic peoples powers as well, it seems natalia was given what bailey was searching for years to do. however, natalia does not know how to use it, nor does she trust herself to do so.
WHO THEY LIKE BETTER:
natalia loves both her parents equally and forever and honestly who wouldn’t, bailey and rylie are the otpest of all otps.
WHO THEY TAKE AFTER MOST:
it is very half and half here. although i would lean towards her being more like RYLIE in the sense that rylie and her are both very independent and strong people, although they do not know it. they both also feel things very deeply and severely, and need time to heal, but when they do finally heal, they come back and even better person. they are both incredibly loyal and willing to look out for who they need to, and put others needs before their own.
PERSONAL HEADCANON(S):
Alcoholism has been found to be genetic. Although Bailey would never blame Rylie if Natalia began drinking one day, Rylie and her both fear for the day Natalia starts drinking and never stops.
Natalia has clinical depression. Again, it’s something Rylie blames herself for, even though Bailey tells herself not to. But Rylie recognises a lot of herself in Natalia, especially with the way they both hide their emotions away or pretend they don’t exist. Natalia always puts on a brave face to her mothers, it’s her brother that she can never find herself able to lie to. He can read her too well for that, and is often the only person who can actually help pull her out of the slump she gets into.
Natalia is an incredible swimmer, just like Bailey. And she also does ballet like both Bailey and Rylie do. She’s a very graceful performer and in all of her movements. she could go professional one day without a doubt in anybody’s mind.
FACE CLAIM:
Katherine Langford
[ * DANIEL CARTER BARTON
“ - there are so many g o o d people in this world… if you can’t find one. BE ONE. “
NAME:
[ DANIEL ] — Hebrew meaning ‘God is my judge’. mainly named after a very close friend and person to both Bailey and Rylie.
[ CARTER ] — named after Bailey’s older brother, carter forrester.
[ BARTON ] — a soulful, expressive name. people with this name have an inner need for quiet and peace. they analyze the world, and work towards finding deeper truths.
BIRTHDATE:
5th May
GENDER:
cis male
APPEARANCE:
[ HAIR ] — dark brown, very fine and fairly straight. his hair is incredibly similar to bailey’s, except shorter, obviously.
[ EYES ] — dark brown. not particularly big, but when he wants to, he can make them look really wide and doe-y and get just about anybody under his finger.
[ HEIGHT ] — five foot five. he recently went through a growth spurt and is tall as heck.
PERSONALITY:
+ JOVIAL ; he’s very bright and always ready to share the happiness and joy. he loves making people smile or laugh, and takes after carter in that he can be a bit of a class clown at times with his clumsiness. daniel works hard on being liked, but not to the point where it’s unhealthy. he is simply just a charming guy who is able to get most people to like him without ever having to try too hard. most people find him to be reliable and constant, as well as good natured.
- MUTABLE ; daniel’s greatest downfall is that he’s terrible at making decisions. he’s flighty and always changing his mind. do not ask him to pick anything, for anyone, because it will haunt him for weeks and he’ll call you at 3am, asking you if you think his answer was okay. for this reason, he usually doesn’t test well because he spends too long on the multiple choice answers. he turns into a nervous wreck as soon as he has to make an executive decision, and he prefers following the crowd, or going with the flow of things.
SPECIAL TALENTS:
SHARED VISION: although daniel hated having to share this power with his sister when he was younger and accidentally tap into her mindframe, or see what she sees, as he’s gotten older, daniel has really become to appreciate it. it’s nice knowing that wherever he is, he can always stay in touch with his sister and ensure she’s safe. it’s also a way for him to know when she gets caught in one of her downward spirals, and he can make sure she receives help straight away.
INTUITIVE APTITUDE: whilst weapons are rylie’s forte, and something she can pick up and just know. daniel’s power is both similar and vastly different. he has a great sense of intuition, and its a power he doesn’t even realise he has. but daniel always has the ability to just know things. he can sense when something isn’t right, or when danger might be near. whilst most people learn to trust him quite easily and happily, not many people know that it’s not just about trusting his word, but about knowing that he is, quite literally, always going to be correct and know the answer.
WHO THEY LIKE BETTER:
honestly, if daniel ever chose between them then bailey would smack him because how can you choose between two gay goddesses???? you just can’t.
WHO THEY TAKE AFTER MOST:
again, it’s a very close call, but i would say BAILEY. daniel is slightly more in tune with nature, he usually spends hours outside with bailey, tending to their garden and just talking to her. he’s also very willing to go out on a limb for other people, or help those who need it. he’s a very selfless person, just like bailey often is.
PERSONAL HEADCANON(S):
Having been raised in a very very female dominated household, Daniel respects and loves women very dearly. He finds that women are just better friends and people to him, and he is definitely a number one Woman Ally. Overall, Daniel’s family are basically his best friends and he trusts them wholly and completely. He’d tell them anything and everything.
daniel is exceptionally close to his uncle carter. the two both are incredibly similar in that they are caring, compassionate people, with the same senses of humour and slight smart-arse quips.
Daniel is working to train and help out SHIELD just like his mother and grandparents have done, although he would drop anything in a second if he needed to, in order to help out his sister, although she’s older then him, daniel still cares for her and looks out for her dearly.

Houstonian Tales: Lauren Eddy
Lauren Eddy. Photo: Hanna Gonzales
Twenty years ago in this town, you wouldn’t have seen too many people champion the efforts of women in the music industry. It’s pretty vile when you think about it, but that’s just the way things were, unfortunately. However, unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, it’s pretty hard not to notice all that women have been doing for the music scene in Houston and throughout the country. You also wouldn’t have given much thought to Galveston having much of a thriving music community twenty years ago, either. In fact, you probably wouldn’t have given it much thought a decade ago. While Lauren Eddy isn’t the only person booking shows on the island, her efforts through Wake The Zine shouldn’t go unnoticed. The monthly zine, which can be found at various shops like Deep End Records, Insomnia, and Wired Up, is a calling card to DIY culture and making the most of wherever you live. Through the zine and her band EL LAGO, she’s proving that she can not only write about music, but make some of the most intriguing music coming out of our area today. On the heels of finishing their debut album, Free Press Houston caught up with one of the strongest scene builders and artists you ought to get acquainted with.
Free Press Houston: Where are you from? You weren’t born in Galveston, correct?
Lauren Eddy: I’m originally from Texas City, right across the Bay, but the Irish side of my family has old roots in Galveston. I’ve lived here for five years now.
FPH: You co-produce the DIY zine, Wake The Zine for the Galveston area. What made you decide to start doing the zine and how long have you been making it for?
Eddy: It was a solo project at first, but a small team coalesced around it. My good friend Jorja Montgomery became the co-editor and did layout for a solid year, but she is currently on break. Grant Loomis and Lisa Gulesserian will be working on layout and editorial duties with me now.
I started making the zine because the shows here felt so underground. Only this small social circle knew or cared, and I was hoping to broaden that circle and bring people out to shows. I made the first issue in October 2015. That was before I met Dan Schmahl, who runs Super Hit Press in Galveston. It’s more fun now with the Risograph printing process.
FPH: You’ve gotten to land some pretty strong interviews, especially for the zine world. Have there ever been times when you couldn’t get someone you wanted to interview, or has there ever been a time when you landed an interview that you didn’t think you would?
Eddy: We did have an interview declined for the first time! Julian Jimenez, who is a longtime contributor, is a go-getter and tried to interview Clem Burke, the drummer from Blondie. We were hosting the Split Squad and Dressy Bessy at the local VFW Hall, but Julian said he just couldn’t seem to engage Burke in a conversation. Honestly, I can only begin to imagine how that rewires your brain socially — you know, to have that level of celebrity. I don’t blame him one bit. I think it could happen to anyone. Or maybe he isn’t supposed to do interviews unless they go through certain channels. I have no idea! I didn’t assign that one though. I think I’m really most interested in up-and-coming bands and local bands.
FPH: The zine also produces shows in Galveston. What was the catalyst in putting shows together and about how many have you done now?
Eddy: The collective has hosted about 20 shows now, the majority of which I’ve had the pleasure of booking. I love putting lineups together! There’s a lot of room for intuition and imagining how things might go together. And I tend to book gender diverse lineups because it feels so much more natural to me.
Before the zine, I was trying to bring in bands through EL LAGO. Starting out, Galveston was the only scene we felt like we had access to, although Houston feels like such a welcoming place now! It means so much to be included. I never thought that anyone in Houston would care about the zine or the band at all, you know?
FPH: Is there ever a time when it feels like people on the island don’t get what you’re trying to do down there with the zine and the shows, or have they been pretty receptive?
Eddy: The first year blew me away! I was shocked to move 300 copies every month, even if they are free. People don’t have to pick it up, but they do. And I’d never had a sparsely attended show until very, very recently — which is pretty wild!
It’s been a little more trying for me personally this year. With any project, it’s all about the chemistry and momentum, and that will kind of ebb and flow. I had to discuss a values issue with one guy who I was working with, and that wasn’t fun. He couldn’t really dialogue about it. Sometimes people don’t understand why things like that are so important to me.
I still appreciate Galveston so much. I’m muscling through for now with the amazing friends who still give a lot of their time and energy to make the zine and the shows happen. Every single person who comes out, I appreciate so much. I try not to “expect” anything or take it for granted.
FPH: For people who don’t know, where can people grab a copy of Wake The Zine, and how often does it come out?
Eddy: We’re trying to get back on schedule with a combined June/July issue, so we hope to get it out the first week of each month for the rest of 2017. Most of the zines stay in Galveston at MOD Coffeehouse, but I also take some over to Deep End Records and I send some to the Miss Champagne online distro. I also need to upload some past issues to our website soon.
EL LAGO. Photo: Jordan Asinas
FPH: You also front the band EL LAGO, who has had quite the year since this time last year. Is it hard coming up for shows so frequently when you have to make the drive back to Galveston each time?
Eddy: It can be pretty brutal! The roads do feel dangerous late at night. One time we pulled up to our building in Galveston, and Charlie and I heard this truck come screeching down Market Street. There was some kind of drunken fight at Buckshot. We heard this sound like a gunshot, so we dropped our gear on the sidewalk, left the car door wide open into the street, and ran inside to duck for cover like it was a drive-by. I heard afterward that it was the sound of a rock being thrown at the man’s windshield. That will make more sense if you’ve seen some of the crumbling sidewalks here! He hit a pole and left his bumper on our curb, so I’m glad we dropped everything and ran.
Funny, there was a similar place my grandpa told us about. When he was growing up, there was this place downtown called the Imperial Club, and it was modeled after a saloon. They called it “The Blood Bucket.” Thankfully, there are cops outside Buckshot just waiting for it now.
FPH: El Lago has been in the studio working with Austin Sepulvado of Buxton and Dollie Barnes, as well as with Steve Christensen. How did that come about and was it difficult working with two seasoned veterans as them?
Eddy: I met Austin at one of our early Houston shows. I believe you had told him to check us out, so thank you! I had fallen out-of-touch with Houston music, so I was so happy to discover this new wave of incredible artists like Dollie Barnes, VODI, Rose Ette, Ruiners, Black Kite and so many more! Austin has worked with Steve a lot and we talked about working together on our first release. He did production and added perfect, subtle synth parts.
Steve and Austin are both a total pleasure to work with! I’ve only been playing electric guitar for about three years now, and some guitarists will try to pick holes in your playing or push their ego at you, but I never have to be defensive with Austin. I ask him lots of questions, and he recommended a guitar tech, James Love, who set up the tremolo piece on my Mustang. I’ve really enjoyed that.
Steve is the best imaginable person to work with, and I also adore his cats, Black Cat and Other Cat, even though I am allergic and was on meds the whole time! He’s such an ace! And he has his workflow down so smoothly! It’s to the point where you might not know how much of the weight he is carrying because it’s so seamless.
FPH: I know that the album is pretty much done already, do you guys have a release date and a title or are you still working that out?
Eddy: It’s our first time to go through this process, so I really need to do my homework. We’re talking with Jessica at Miss Champagne about doing the tape release, and I can’t think of anyone I’d rather go through! We love Jessica, and it would be really special to us to be on the same label as so many local bands we love. We’re not sure about the title yet. Maybe Colors?
Lauren Eddy. Photo: Hanna Gonzales
FPH: As a woman in the music industry, who fronts a band, who writes music, who produces shows and your own publication, do you ever feel like it’s tougher to get respect than it is for a guy to get it who maybe does less than you do?
Eddy: There was some initial skepticism toward me, but it got better from there. I got the most skepticism as an electric guitarist, because there weren’t any women doing that in Galveston at the time, that I knew of. It really hasn’t been an issue since. No one has asked me if I’m a roadie or a girlfriend lately.
The same with the shows I managed. There was some concern early on that I should have a man work the door instead. I was assumed to be “too nice.” Now people are used to seeing me around, and I do have peers like Melanie Stone (India Tigers In Texas) and Sara Sims (Kink Shame) and Catherine Stroud.
I’m still trying to push for change beyond myself. I’ve had a few tough conversations with male friends and peers in my scene regarding language used on stage or in conversations, and some of them have been really understanding and willing to hear a different perspective. I appreciate that so much. Others have been maybe too fragile or too proud to dialogue. I guess it’s a good way to tell who your real friends are! They may not be the most cosmopolitan and they may not always choose the right words… but that they can handle an honest conversation about it and not resent you for challenging them in a heartfelt way.
FPH: You’ve kind of created your own world down in Galveston with everything that you do. Do you ever get overwhelmed with it all or is it just what you do?
Eddy: Oh, for sure! Charlie knows how overwhelmed I get. I think I am a little too private, and my friends don’t always know what I’m feeling or thinking. I strongly need an outside perspective sometimes though! I also want to tell you that you are doing such an essential thing, David, by connecting the Houston area music scene. You work so hard and I think it inspires all of us to keep pushing it forward. Thank you so much for this interview.
It’s definitely inspiring to see one person push so hard for their city to be considered part of the Texas music landscape. Through EL LAGO, Wake, and the shows Eddy is hosting on the island, she’s definitely helping to cement Galveston as a spot for people to catch touring and local bands on the regular. You can read the latest issues of Wake The Zine, here, you can listen to EL LAGO here, and you can see EL LAGO June 30 at the Birthday Club Tour Kickoff show. The all ages event has sets from Holly Halls and Ether Wave as well, with doors at 9 pm and a pay what you want cover, with more information here.

Task 12: Muse Booster
Name: Kara Brookes
Height: 5′4″
Age in Story: 24
Birthplace: San Francisco, California
Hair (color, length, style): Kara’s hair is naturally blonde, and while she usually prefers it short, it’s currently grown a few inches past her shoulders over the years. Keeping it straight is an easier way to style it, but sometimes she’ll curl or wave it.
Race/Nationality: White; American with some Irish, British, and German ethnicity
Regional Influences: California
Accent (voice, style of speech, slang, signature words/phrases): Kara doesn’t have an accent, and she tends to use more relevant, every day slang like “I can’t even,” “on fleek,” and “bae.” She is also pretty known for coming up with pet names for people (her most famous being the name she called Gabe Bradbury, “Bradbaby”). Her voice is kind of soft with a very subtle raspy/rough edge to it. Voice clip here.
Religion: Catholic, but super poor practicing
Marital Status: Unmarried, but dating
Scars/Other Notable Physical Attributes: She does have a few small, faded scars from fights as a Rebel. She also has a few small tattoos. Her first tattoo is a small cross on her right wrist. Her next one is a small 3 on the inside of her right wrist, which she got recently after she became the Third Nova of the Rebel Army. She has the Roman numerals LXXVI (76) on her left side. She also has two small anchor tattoos on each of her ankles. She got these shortly after she joined the Rebel Army, as symbols to keep herself grounded when she was training to gain control of her powers.
Handicaps (physical, emotional, mental): She’s emotionally very stubborn and a pro compartmentalizer. She’s also a functioning alcoholic to an extent.
Athletic? Inactive? Overall health?: Very athletic and healthy. She trains and works out every day in the Rebel base, and she tries her best to eat relatively healthy.
Style of Dress: Kara’s style of dress is always comfortable and casual. She likes to feel comfy in skinny jeans/ripped skinny jeans; Sperry’s, Vans, Converse, UGGs; crop tops, t-shirts, or tank tops with light sweaters or cardigans. Sometimes she’ll add a scarf or beanie as an accessory. She’ll occasionally dress it up with a nicer top or sweater with nicer flats or boots of varying lengths. While she dresses in a more casual fashion, she does have a good eye for fashion in general and wishes she could afford top trends for herself to wear on a daily basis.
Favorite Colors: Light blues and greens and silver
How does character feel about appearance? She definitely knows she’s attractive, and likes to keep up her appearance even in little ways.
Any siblings?: Tanner Brookes (older brother) and Zed Avery (older half brother)
Relationship with parents?: Ever since she ran away when she was about 16, her relationship with her parents had been kind of strained. She rarely ever spoke to them, but not because they were bad parents. She respected and admired her parents, and loved them a lot, and she still feels guilty for running off without an explanation. Now that they’re dead, she regrets her past actions and not being able to see them or tell them she loves them before they were killed.
Memories about childhood?: Kara has very vague memories of her childhood, but she remembers it being mostly a normal childhood. She was happy, and she definitely remembers growing up with Tanner and how the two of them would torment each other but look out for each other at the same time.
Educational background? (Street smart? Book smart?): Kara is a high school drop out, but she is a good mix of book and street smart, excelling in street smarts. She’s been quietly considering getting her GED and going to college, possibly to study fashion design or business.
Work Experience: Rebel Army Third Nova
Where does the character live now? Describe home. (Emotional atmosphere & physical): Kara currently lives in both the Rebel Army base, and sometimes at Tanner’s apartment. The Rebel Army base has been considered her “real home” for the past few years since she ran away, but she wouldn’t exactly call it a relaxing place to live, especially as an authority figure to the other Rebels. Tanner’s apartment has become a relaxing escape for herself.
Neat or messy?: Kind of messy in the cluttered sense.
Sexuality: Straight.
Morals: Kara thinks her morals are pretty well rounded. She believes in Metahuman equality and wants to fight for it fairly, but she doesn’t believe in killing or aggressively gaining this equality. She will, however, kill for self defense or to protect someone, but she will still feel guilty about it.
Activities: Fighting, training, teaching younger Rebels, sketching, drinking wine, reading, sketching
Friends? Pets?: Alice, Deidra, Daniel, Foster, and Ryan are her closest friends. She kind of adopted Aslan, Val’s cat, as her own after the other Rebel’s passing.
Enemies? Why?: Lucien Gaudet. The man tried to kill her, pretty much killed Connor, and took some of her eggs without permission to create the biological daughter of her and Connor as a science project.
Basic Nature: Kara is definitely tough, witty, and unafraid to tell it like it is to someone’s face. She’s brave and strong, with quite the stubborn streak, and a difficulty in admitting when she’s wrong (but she’s working on it). She’s fiercely loyal and will go to the ends of the earth to keep those she loves safe and out of harm.
Personality Traits: Short-tempered, stubborn, strong-willed, bold, witty, sassy, creative, compassionate, calm, impatient, powerful, maternal, protective, argumentative, authoritative, intuitive, loyal
Strongest/Weakest Traits: Kara’s strongest traits are her protective nature, her wit, and her loyalty. Her weakest would be her temper and stubbornness, since these two traits make her reluctant in admitting when she’s wrong about something, and that has caused tension in her relationships before.
What do they fear?: She fears that the Rebels aren’t doing anything and never will, and that all they will accomplish against C.A.R.M.A is everyone getting killed fighting for Metahuman equal rights.
What are they proud of?: She’s proud of being part of the Rebel Army and the fact that she’s doing something (even if it’s not much) to work towards a better future for Metas and humans living together.
Outlook on life: She’s very realistic and secretly hopefully optimistic about the future.
Ambitions: To help the Rebels “win” the war of Metahuman oppression against the government and C.A.R.M.A without resorting to all-out violence.
Politics: Kara doesn’t feel as if she’s educated enough in most political areas to make an informed decision, but she’s very strongly for Metahuman equality and rights as a political stance. She does find herself slowly becoming more and more conservative with a few liberal values as she learns more.
How do they see themselves?: She likes to think she’s a strong and inspiring leader of the Rebels, but sometimes she doubts herself on doing a good job.
How are they seen by others?: Sassy, sarcastic, witty, brave, a fearless leader. Some would say she’s incredibly stubborn and argumentative, and that may cause some dislike towards her.
Do I (the writer) like this person? Why? Why not?: Absolutely. Kara’s the kind of person I’d want as my ride or die best friend. She’s fiercely loyal and trustworthy, and definitely someone I’d want fighting for me in my corner.
Most Important Thing About Them: Her strength and loyalty.
Present Problem: C.A.R.M.A and the government are continuing to crack down on the rights of Metahumans, and the Rebels haven’t achieved much of anything except for an increasing body count in the last few years. The Rebel Army’s stagnant progress is becoming incredibly frustrating for Kara and other Rebels.
How it will get worse: There are a million different ways this could get worse, really. C.A.R.M.A could continue restricting their rights as Metas until they are absolutely boxed in even further. Rebels could start going against Nova orders and attacking C.A.R.M.A’s base in Pansaw, thus cementing the fact that the Rebels are terrorists when they aren’t supposed to be. The Nephilim continuing to spread fear and discord with using their powers to harm others certainly doesn’t help the Rebels’ name.
Their goals in this story?: Kara wants to one day live in a world where she can live a normal life while using her powers freely, go back to school to get her degree in fashion design, get married and start a family (after first getting a job and a place of her own, of course), and just be happy. To start achieving this, however, she and the Rebels need to somehow end the war of Metahuman oppression.
What traits will help/hurt them in achieving this goal?: Her determination, strength, resilience, and unwillingness to give up.
What makes them different from similar characters?: I think what makes Kara different is that she doesn’t let her gender define herself in a role of power as a young female leader of a civil movement. She’s strong on her own, but knows when to ask for help, and most importantly, she doesn’t let her love life or any man define herself, unlike a few female main characters. She also freely speaks her mind however she likes, even if some people may say it’s “unclassy for a lady to talk that way.” She literally gives no fucks.
Why will readers remember this character vividly?: I think what makes Kara so memorable is that she’s a strong female character in a position of leadership, and she can admit that she’s not a perfect person. She’s human and capable of making mistakes, and even learning from them, and that makes her relatable and admirable at the same time.

Houstonian Tales: Lauren Eddy
