Eddie Munson is a modest man. With a wallet and dick that fat, you're surprised. Most men would be shouting from the rooftops of their penthouses that they're loaded, throwing hundreds at the dozen strippers they order every other friday night, just because they can.

From that moment forward, you were mesmerized.

The most difficult part about being romantically involved with him, was the gifts you'd receive from him. Eddie was very straight-foward with his wealth, he told you on your first date, to the exact same bar you tended. He told you he had toured with local bands from his hometown as an instrument and audio visual engineer. He made calls to different tour and musician managers to see if he would be able join their road crew. After a few years of life on the road, he managed to open up his own music shop. That's when the big bucks started flowing.

Despite knowing that he has more than enough money to spoil you with, you're still bashful and hesitant about accepting them. Hell, when he asked you to move in with him, you declined it almost immediately, not wanting to seem like you were financially leaning on him in any way. Even after you began living together, you maintained a 40-hour work week at the bar for some time.

The first gift, more like gifts, were beautiful bouquets of flowers he'd bring home to you. You'd be at home, curled up into the couch cushions with a paperback folded in your hands and in comes your darling boyfriend, ringed fingers curled around the green stems of another bouquet. Every Monday, he comes home from work with a fresh bouquet to replace your old ones. "To cure your Monday Blues, dollface," he'd say.

Then came the clothes. Every weekend he offered to take you shopping, saying something along the lines of, "Maybe we'll find something from one of those magazines you seem to actually read." Within the first month of living together, your portion of your shared closet took up the most space, at least a 3/4 ratio.

You feel beyond special, never taking his gifts for granted, especially since you're more than aware he knows he doesn't have to. He always tries to play it off, explaining how gift giving is just his love language. You might actually believe him, considering he gets his friends outrageous gifts as well, but it's different with you. There's a dark glimmer in his eyes when you tear back the paper encasing your newest present from your beloved.

Behind a deep maroon wrapping paper, lies a small white box. The name across the top of the box in golden script is of a jewelry shop you recognize. And it's not a cheap shop either. Lifting the lid off the box, your eyes flick up to meet Eddie, who's smirking, arms folded over his chest while a hand cradles his chin.

Once the gift has been revealed, a small gasp escapes from parted lips. It's a dainty anklet, sterling silver. As you lift the jewelry up by careful fingers, you notice the hanging letters. A less-than-subtle 'EM' charm hanging from it. It's also in a script font, making the 'E' look like a backwards '3'. A small gemstone sets between the initials, a beautiful cut ruby.

To say it's beautiful is an understatement. It's gorgeous, only something that Eddie Munson himself would think to be a perfect fit for his sweetheart. "Whaddya think?" He asks, though he already knows how you feel, more than confident at his gift-giving abilities.

"Eds, I love it. It's perfect, thank you," you chide, leaning up to press a kiss to his lips as another form of 'thank you.'

It isn't until Eddie decides that the two of you are going on vacation in Santorini that you ever really wear it. It's too ornate for every day wear, and a small part of you fears that it'll somehow slip or snap off and you'll have lost it.

Laid out on a reclining beach chair, you're soaking up the midday Grecian sun, shades perched atop the bridge of your nose and a mimosa in hand. The rental Eddie snagged for your two-week excursion was straight from a resort advertisement. The modern advancements made were stunning, but the architecture was true the city. You'd never imagined being sprawled out in front of a heated pool overlooking the beautiful seaside.

Aside from one of the many bikinis you packed for the trip and your sunglasses, you only had on the dainty anklet purchased by your lover. It settled against your skin and caught the sun's rays, making it shine.

"Look at you," you hear Eddie from over your shoulder. You hadn't heard him come outside, but the soft breath against the side of your neck made you jump, "spoiled rotten."

You can't help but snicker at his comment. He had made you this way with his expensive gifts, how could he judge? You decide to lean into this role of the 'spoiled rotten brat' he so lovingly teased you with, "What could you possibly want that's more important than me enjoying the sun?"

He knows better than to take the comment seriously, a small smirk tugging at his lips as he stands up from his crouched position, stepping to stand in front of the sun, "Wanna run that by me again, sweetheart?"

You see him now, in all his glory. Long curls pulled back into a bun, strands creeping out from either movement or humidity, you aren't sure. A pair of black swim trunks hang off his hips and a Metallica muscle tank has been pulled over his tattooed torso, the ink etched into his arms still exposed. Good enough to eat.

Pushing your shades up on top of your head, you roll eyes at him once they're visible, "Ugh, you're blocking the sun, Eddie."

The metalhead raises his hands in defeat, a small smile on his features as he steps to the side, allowing the sun to once again be soaked up into your pores, "Alright, alright. No need to get feisty. Come inside for a while, I made lunch."

Even though you felt assured you'd won whatever playful battle was at hand, you weren't sure you were ready to drop the facade. Though, you were getting hungry, and if Eddie cooked? Your mouth watered at the thought.

"Fine. But because I'm hungry, not because you asked." You taunt as you swing your legs off the chair's recline, sliding your feet into your sandals.

Following him inside, he opens the sliding glass door for you, like the perfect gentleman he's always been, before following you through the threshold, sliding it shut behind him.

As the two of you enter the kitchen, your eyes land on the empty stove and countertops, eyebrows knit together in confusion, "Eddie, you said you-"

You're cut off by Eddie's fingers digging into your hip, backing you up against the marble counter top. Lifting your gaze up to his, the breath is nearly sucked out of you at his imposing stance in front of you, "I might've told a white lie," he mumbles, eyes glued to where his hand meets your flesh. His fingers slide underneath the thin band to your bottoms before allowing it to snap against your skin, "but then again, your attitude needs an adjustment."

Even with his tone bordering on mean, he leans in and catches your lips in a passionate kiss, taking his time. He can taste the freshly squeezed orange juice on your tongue. A firm, tattooed hand stays at your hip, holding you in place as your arms slink around his neck. With both his kiss and touch still relatively gentle, the thoughts that you're able to process are that he'll remain stern with you, but not unreasonable.

How do I start beef with an eldritch god of the sea?

I have some bloodborn type stuff that I need to get done, and don't know where to start.

Angering an ancient god can be dangerous, but if you should wish to do so, they aren't too difficult to piss off. Try the following list of things that can enrage the great old ones:

Disturb their slumber: Most elder gods are not dead, but dreaming. If you sound an alarm clock or loud music in their area, this can invoke their wrath. Try also a loud motorcycle, or crying baby.

Deface their idols: Nearly all gods have every season of American Idol on DVD, and scratching their discs will make them skip during the performances. This will surely bring down their hatred on you.

Kill the god's favorite animals: Most gods will not care if you kill their human followers, but if you massacre the animals sacred to that deity, they will be pissed. There are no records of storms at sea before the invention of whaling, and there are no records of political corruption before the snakes were driven from Ireland. These are due to the vengeance of the whale god Payakan and the snake god Thulsadoom, respectively.

Usurp their fanbase: Most gods are jealous, as seen in the film "Jealous Gods" which happens to be free to watch on YouTube and Vimeo. If you torment a god by stealing their worshipers, they will almost certainly wreak havoc on you and those you love.

Move the triad of statues out of alignment: If you invade the esper realm and raise the floating continent, then use the light of judgment to burn your dissenters or even for your own amusement, the returners will likely defeat you and magic will fade from the world. Or something, I don't know, I never played Skyrim.

Have sex with their spouse: From Greece to Egypt to Rome and beyond, sleeping with the spouse of a god tends to end poorly for all involved. This excludes of course the god Polyculus, patron of ethical non-monogamy. Sleeping with a spouse of Polyculus generally just entitles the participant to use the Sacred Shower of Lavacrum, and if needed, the Holy Lozenges of Desogestrel. Jesus is also married to like a million lonely nuns and hasn't smote me yet for what I did with Sister Redgrave and her convent...

Profane their sacraments: Many worshipers of the ancient ones will ingest various substances to commune with them. By ruining these sacred substances, you incur their ire. Just be sure you know what will work for which deity, because I know a guy who angrily threw fish guts on a sacrament of Dagon and now he's their high priest cuz Dagon fuckin' LOOOOOVED that shit. Like... In a creepy way.

any thoughts on the family dynamics on given and how they affect the characters?

I feel like the only family interaction we really get to see is with Uenoyama (his sister/dad). We get a little bit of Mafuyuu with his mom (and Kedama!) and Akihiko’s backstory, but we they don’t really go in depth. (also we get nothing on ugetsu and i would looooove to know more about his life)

Anyways, sorry for the random open-ended question, i love your essays!

first and foremost - thank you! I am super happy to hear you enjoy my essays! it's the biggest compliment I can receive

family dynamics in Given are genuinely something I wish were explored more. believe it or not - I specifically wanted more of Uenoyama's family, even though they are arguably the most developed. and I think I have quite a bit to say on them, so this will likely be quite long.

so starting with the adults, I don't actually mind not learning too much or seeing too much of their families? some adults do grow apart from their families, don't see them as often, it's just how it goes sometimes.

Akihiko does have the bonus of at least giving us that he isn't that close with his family, so that's great, that happens sometimes. I don't feel like I really wanted to learn about Akihiko's family, as he doesn't seem bothered by his not being too close to them. that being said - how they affected him? well, Akihito's father is a violinist in the UK, so that's likely where he got his love of music - especially his learning to play violin. it almost makes me wonder if he was pressured into violin specifically and that was part of why he started drums, as it wouldn't have the same pressure surrounding them. also, his father lives out of country, which likely plays a role in why they aren't that close, as it can be tough to keep contact when far away and with the time difference. I don't remember Akihiko's mother being mentioned, so I have nothing to say about her. my main thoughts are that Akihiko probably naturally drifted as he grew older and was influenced by his father in terms of his education and career (pursuing music but also specifically violin).

now onto Haruki. so he is canonically close with his family, which I think is great! I love that Haruki is a family guy, even if he doesn't necessarily see them after moving to Tokyo. the omakes with Haruki's sister are genuinely two of my favourites, I think it's really sweet to see that they're close, have an active family group chat, and that he is out and they're all accepting of him. again, as an adult, Haruki has grown away from his family, which is fine. they're all still close even if they don't always see each other, which is cute. I think they were probably pretty supportive with Haruki pursuing music, as he never seems to have any sort of struggle internally about deciding to do music. I feel like he's just completely healthy and normal family dynamics, which has also helped him be a good mentor towards the younger band members. I believe he's the youngest in his family, with two older sisters, which I also think would influence his attitude towards the younger band members - he can finally be the older brother figure and mentor.

finally, Ugetsu. I desperately want to know what Ugetsu's family is like - which I think was evident in my previous post about him. so what we know is that Ugetsu's father is a diplomat and grandfather a politician. I believe that it's possible that part of why Ugetsu failed at romance was because he may have felt more pressure from his family to be successful in his career. a diplomat and a politician are big to live up to, and definitely the type of careers and reputations where you're going to be watched as their legacy. I think that while Ugetsu has genuine passion for violin, he knows that his skill means that he can move up in the world and keep up a successful career line. I also wonder if Ugetsu is out as I'm assuming gay - due to homophobia being a thing, it's possible that he also wanted to hide his sexuality as that could impact the reputation that he has and the reputation of his family. on the other hand, there is the possibility that he wanted to be known for something other than his politically successful family and therefore decided to pursue music. it could really go either way.

overall, the adult family relationships are fine to me? I believe that they all make sense with their characters, and while I wish we got a little more, adults drift away because of moving or just not being close with their families, so that's fine to me.

now for the teens - which is Shizusumi, Yuki, Mafuyu, and Uenoyama. this is where families have the potential to get more interesting.

Hiiragi is not mentioned because his family isn't brought up other than one time, where he mentions them not being home soon after Yuki's death as an excuse to stay with Shizusumi. this is the only time we hear of them as far as I know. which is too bad, I want to know what family produced the absolute diva that is Hiiragi

Shizusumi is a foster kid though. I do think this can be seen within his character, as he's quiet, standoffish, and cares deeply for those who he is around. Hiiragi is basically Shizusumi's main person, which I believe shows possible attachment issues when it comes to family. his experience within the foster system isn't clarified, I don't know for sure that he bounced around homes or not, but I would think that if he did it's part of why he's a bit harder to read and appears only with a small group of people (Hiiragi, Mafuyu, previously Yuki, now Uenoyama). it's possible that parts of Shizusumi's personality are because of his growing up in foster care - he was in it from a very young age, like before he met Hiiragi even when they were tiny children. there's no confirmation for any of this of course, but I can't help but wonder if that's part of why he's a little more intense and also uncertain in his relationships. by uncertain, I mean with Hiiragi - as he comes off so strong and needs like proof that they can be together, that the memory of Yuki doesn't get in the way of them. I do wish that a little more of Shizusumi's background was known, I think it would be really interesting.

then there's Yuki, who has a similar story to Mafuyu in terms of family. Yuki was a latchkey kid whose mother worked and father committed suicide (as revealed in Strawberry Swing). so Yuki was reliant on Mafuyu more than his mother, as it's said by his mother than Mafuyu was his anchor. it implies that while they may have been close, they weren't as close as he was Mafuyu. because of this, Mafuyu was more influential, and it was an argument with him rather than with him mother that ended up triggering his suicide, as she wasn't his anchor. it's likely that Yuki had the same mental illness as his father, as they both committed suicide, ending their lives in tragedy. I think Yuki was probably close, but not actually super close with his mother.

now Mafuyu is also a latchkey kid with a single mother, but his father was abusive and was arrested early in his life. Mafuyu's quietness and inability to communicate at times is directly caused by his father - as he would hit Mafuyu whenever he spoke. I think this also gave Mafuyu his more reserved and shy personality, as a person who can't communicate or express themselves normally can struggle to connect with others. I believe that his father was the main reason for struggles that Mafuyu deals with in terms of his voice and expressiveness, leaving a long lasting nervousness around speaking up about his feelings and thoughts. as Mafuyu develops, this does fade out a little, he struggles less to communicate until he feels abandoned again when Uenoyama joins SYH - this is more of a history repeats itself thing that deals with Yuki rather than his father's abuse though. as for his mother - I think Mafuyu is quite independent, caused by the fact that he was a latchkey kid. I believe the same was true for Yuki, and that they learnt early on to grow up and be independent because they would be home alone while their mother's worked. this isn't a bad thing, and I still think that both of their mothers did their best, but it's really difficult to raise a child when you're a single mother. also, I say this as a latchkey kid with a single mother myself - you can sometimes grow up more independent, self-reliant in terms of anything emotional and educational simply because you spend more time on your own. I think that Mafuyu likely knows that he has his mother as a support system, but doesn't actually know how to communicate with her, therefore relying on bonds with peers - especially as seen with Yuki and his codependence. also, I wrote a post awhile back about how I think Kedama is a meant to be an emotional support animal given to Mafuyu after Yuki's death. I think that his mother knows she can't always connect with him because of that independence that was built after being distant due to work schedules, so Kedama was a way for Mafuyu to be motivated to get up and live his life, as he has another being relying on him now. I think that Mafuyu and his mother aren't too close but still love each other, just simply having some distance, and that Kedama was a really sweet and smart companion for Mafuyu in hopes that he would be more motivated to take care of himself after Yuki's passing.

finally, Uenoyama! so of course, we cannot talk about Uenoyama without starting with his beautiful sister, Yayoi. she's the most fleshed out of literally any family member in the entire manga - her personality, she social standings, her love life, her relationship to Ritsuka, all of this has substance within the series. Yayoi and Ritsuka have a pretty typical sibling relationship as far as I can tell - teasing and loving bullying, while still being supportive and understanding for each other. the one time this comes to a halt is when Yayoi discovers that Ritsuka is dating Mafuyu - and she becomes incredibly worried and slight uncertain about whether or not their relationship is even okay, if she should somehow stop him from seeing Mafuyu. I find that the panels where she tells Ritsuka that his relationship is "weird" and "unnatural", saying he'll "get hurt" show that while Ritsuka cares about Yayoi, she also isn't the most influential. some people will doubt themselves and their relationships when they're told that, people struggle with homophobia and internalized homophobia, but Ritsuka just acknowledges her words and barely listens to her. I think that he shows that in terms of big things like his love life, he won't be swayed by family, no matter how close he is with them - as Yayoi and him appear to be incredibly close. while he wants their support, Ritsuka seems to be a very strong person, as well as being quite independent at times. also, Yayoi is mostly just concerned and can't exactly wrap her head around Ritsuka being gay. to be fair - Ritsuka hadn't shown any sort of romantic inclination before, so I think she also figured he was just the stoic type. so to see him suddenly in a relationship with another boy, one who she doesn't know very well, her reaction was mostly shock and worry. it doesn't excuse her homophobia, even if it was born out of plain not understanding and worry, but it definitely means her wanting to learn how to understand makes sense. I think that after everything, Yayoi would end up being his biggest supporter not only in general but also his relationship. now this is one area where I kinda wish we saw more from Ritsuka's parents. we can gather that they're supportive in terms of his music and pursuing it, it's mentioned that Ritsuka's father is "a music geek and has been a big influence on him", so that in itself really says that yeah they're supportive of his music. however, I was always wanting more of a coming out arc for Ritsuka, as he is the character who discovers his sexuality and gets a boyfriend within the series. I didn't need it to be something big, but I don't think that his parents ever discover his sexuality or anything within the main series, and it kinda makes me wonder how they reacted. I also think that it would be a bit more of a way to show what his relationship is like with his family - if they reacted negatively, would Ritsuka be able to kind of brush it off like he did with Yayoi? would he want to change for them if they have more impact on his relationships in terms of romance? or would even care? would they go through an arc like Yayoi's of figuring out how to understand and support? a coming out arc or simply a small scene likely could've said a lot about what the Uenoyama family is like in terms of how close knit they are. again, I do believe that the scene with Yayoi shows that Ritsuka is secure in who he is as a person, so maybe it wouldn't have revealed too much about the family, as he appears closest with her. overall, Ritsuka is the one who's family I wish we saw more of, I think it could've been interesting to explore their reactions to his sexuality, as well as generally seeing them beyond the knowledge that they support him and his music and his father got him into it.

overall, I wanted more out of the families with the teens - mainly Uenoyama, Shizusumi and Hiiragi (like Hiiragi Mix doesn't give us anything, which I think is a shame). I'm good with what we got out of Mafuyu, but that may be because I grew up similarly in terms of only child with a single mother, and therefore have my own thoughts and experience as an insight to what I think he's like. I think a little more on Haruki's family would've been cute, I'm fine with Akihiko's situation and his family not ever appearing. but I completely wish we had gotten a little more on Ugetsu, as I think that it would've been really interesting to see if his family at all affected his career and his drive for his career over romantic and social lives.

I hope that this makes sense at all, I feel like it's just a ramble about the families and I ain't too sure about if it's the most comprehensive thing to read, sorry.

I may have gone a little overboard 😅 To be honest this tag came around at just the right time! I'd just gotten a new song association and have been working on schoolwork so much that I really needed to do something creative 😆

Originally these were all going to be in similar editing styles (more like Corey's) but somewhere along the way that stopped because I had different ideas that I really wanted to do. Also I cheated a little and a few got more than one song... 🤫

COREY ALTMAN

"Holiday" - Green Day:

This song being here is random song association at its finest. The trail pretty much goes "Holiday" by Green Day > Surf's Up > Beach Vibes > Sulani > Globetrotter Challenge > Corey Song. If that makes sense... 😂 Pretty much, you can blame the Sulani round of the Globetrotter Challenge for it, plus the fact that I feel like it's the type of song/genre Corey would use in his own music.

"Catch Me If You Can" - Set It Off:

Now, it would be a crime to talk about songs and Corey without a song by Set It Off. Corey was created when I was listening to their songs a lot, and it definitely rubbed off on him. From his aesthetic to the songs I imagine him playing, a lot of it came from Set It Off. Even his name was derived from the band's lead singer (although changed from Cody to Corey because that's the route my mind took with it idk). So, this song in particular specifically reminds me of Corey for... Honestly probably obvious reasons 😆 "Catch Me If You Can" was pretty much the theme of his Globetrotter Challenge, where he was constantly moving on the run from the law. A line I really like though for him is the part that says, "I only feel at home when I'm on the run," because I feel like that leads into the deeper aspects of Corey. He really isn't at home anywhere, he's always on the move, even when he's not evading capture anymore. There's a certain non-permanence to everything he does. Something funny about the image itself is that it originally wasn't going to be edited to look like the back cover of a CD. When I took the picture of Corey with the guitar I kind of thought "this looks like the back cover of a CD" and when editing I just needed a way to fill the space at the bottom and it turned into a CD back cover edit 🤣 It actually kind of fits though since both of these songs are the sound I associate with Corey's own music so it worked out in the end.

LIZZY ALTMAN

"Unopened Windows" - Set It Off:

So this one is the context behind this post lol. It's been like two years since I started working on this plotline I have to finish it eventually 😆 Anyway, Lizzy's been teased in many tag games so far, but without a name or much information (note: and this name's not final I'm not sure yet). Here you can probably guess based on the song choice how her story goes 😅 Going back to the epilogue of the Globetrotter Challenge, we see that something is going on, and it leads to Lizzy and her dad being separated. So, the entire song lyrically I really felt spoke to them and their situation (more in a future gameplay 😉). Bonus points for it being a Set It Off song, who I associate with Corey, and thought music could have been something that they bonded over and enjoyed together. I have a few things to say about the image itself because it was a struggle but I looooove how it turned out! It turned out essentially how I imagined it with Lizzy playing guitar in the foreground with a sort of memory of her time with her dad in the background. I probably had about five or six different poses that I put in the background because I couldn't decide which one I liked the best 😆 This was the last image I had to work on out of the four, and I was having trouble with how I wanted the song title to look. While I was browsing for overlays and stuff I came across a lot of cutout style poems and ended up adding in some of the lyrics because I thought it would help explain the concept behind the image. In the end this one is one of my favorites which is unbelievable considering how much I thought it was not going to turn out like I imagined 🥰

"Little Chaos" - Orla Gartland:

In a wonderfully serendipitous coincidence, this was the song association I was very into when getting tagged, and was already planning what became this edit! I rarely have song associations for sims/sims stories (despite how many ended up coming together here) so that's why I'll never get over how well timed this all was (thanks again elderwisp!!) On to the song, it has to do with my upcoming gameplay story centered around the For Rent game pack, and starring the pictured sim (who doesn't have a name yet sorry! 😅). She's going through a bit of a tough time where she's very lost and I thought the lines, "And it's a good day for a meltdown. All my thoughts getting too loud," fit really where she's at, especially at the start. Plus, the vibes are perfect. The image itself was inspired by the song's MV and one part in particular, but it looks a lot different now (I was limited by the poses I could find because I refuse to sit down and learn to make my own yet). I liked this idea of the torn pages framing the image, especially because it plays into the plot, which sees the main character do a lot of journaling throughout the story. So, the lined paper had to do with that, and it doubled as being good for making the letters stand out, which I wanted to be big and misaligned to be more "chaotic," though I think that could have been done more/better. Aaaaand the background is a picture of Tomarang, where the story takes place. To be honest this will probably be the cover image once I finalize a name and get started on playing it 😉

GHOST COWBOY

"Ferryman" - Schafer James and Will Wood:

I've actually been having a lot of fun with this character since initially creating him back before the Horse Ranch pack came out (more on him coming out in a few days for the outlaw challenge 😉). So this song.... The entire concept of our ghost cowboy is that he, being somewhat half dead and half alive, winds up being a good source of convincing "unwilling souls" to cross over, and works with the character Death to do so in exchange for finding out why he's not entirely dead. I'll explain it better another time, but I also really love this song and just thought that the concept of the ferryman and the ghost cowboy as ferriers of the dead.

"Toss A Coin To Your Witcher (Epic Version)" - Samuel Kim and Black Gryph0n:

Liiiiisten... My family made me watch three seasons of The Witcher I had to get something out of it 😆 I joke a lot that this character gives off Geralt vibes but honestly they are definitely super similar just based on their overall aesthetic and horse companions. I wanted to be special though and chose this epic cover instead of the original... Just for fun 😁 There were some cool piano covers too that almost made the cut. This is probably a good place to talk about the actual image (yay!). I hope the visibility on it isn't too bad because it ended up waaaay more cluttered than I originally intended, plus the mist effect definitely makes it harder to see the characters. I made his (also unnamed) horse a little more transparent to try and give off this ghostly see through effect so I hope that comes through. The font isn't the kind of "wild west wanted sign" font that I wanted, but I think it's close enough lol.
