Where no one knows your name
How many times is a person meant to make new friends? When I moved into an apartment in DC with an absolutely iconic girl from Craigslist, I wrote in my journal, “you never know when you’ll meet your next bridesmaid.” Charmingly juvenile, as I was 24 years old. Ironic, as I never had any bridesmaids. And embarrassing, knowing I wrote something that’s surely been embroidered on a bachelorette party t-shirt by now. My point was: you can meet people you fall in love with anywhere, anytime, assuming your heart (and calendar) are open. Now my heart and calendar are open and I am one of Elizabeth Bennet’s sad sisters, cloying and desperate for attention while everyone at the ball ignores me. Meeting people here is unnerving and hapless and eye-clawingly vulnerable. My first new friend told me she was moving away in a few months. Do you invest deeply in hopes of another faraway friendship? Do you just go back to waving as you pass on the street? I like this girl! What an embarrassing thing to have to say to someone! Do you just invite people to every and anything like a lunatic? I can’t even remember to call the people I am forever-and-ever in cahoots with. I’m also deeply bound by what I’ll call the Movie Trap: say it’s 3pm during not-a-pandemic, and you get the urge to see a movie. You look at the showings, and there’s one you really want to see at 7:15. You think to yourself, “I should make an effort,” and you text a friend. “Hey, you wanna go see This Cool Movie at 7:15 tonight?” No one ever says yes. Don’t give me an example of when someone has, because it’s always one of these answers:
“Oooh, I’m actually seeing it with Kate tomorrow - wanna come?”
“Can we go to the 9pm showing? Stuck at work.”
“Yeah but let’s see Movie You’ll Fucking Hate instead.”
Now maybe I’m just lighting flares guiding you to the worst parts of my personality, but this drives me nuts. No, Liz, I don’t want to go tomorrow. I want to go tonight. At 7:15. So I can be in bed by 10. And you’d have to drag my dead body and prop open my eyes to get me to see something like Marriage Story in theaters. The Movie Trap is a big reason I usually hang out by myself, or I make plans weeks in advance. (Don't I sound like a blast.) Just the idea of being like, “I like you! Wanna hang out in October?” makes me want to collapse into a puddle of sad adulthood. Which is why on Friday at 4:30pm, when a girl I’d met a week prior asked if I wanted to grab a drink, I just said yes. I put on a pretty dress, did my makeup, put stuff in a purse, and drove the 25 minutes to town. It was really fun! And how novel to have new contacts in my phone like “Maggie blue house” and “Jess concert friend” — a throwback to the days of “Greg guy on L train” and “Devon ad party.” The very concept of not knowing someone’s last name or even needing it, and a year from now updating their contact info and smiling at your origin story. But for the most part, no one is in our phones. In terms of phone numbers collected, here is the list:
Two friends we knew prior who thank god you guys exist.
New friend who is moving away.
New friend who is game to drink tequila and ride mountain bikes.
Neighbor-not-yet-friend who I really fucking like and am not sure how to cross hang-out threshold with.
Not to say there aren’t any other prospects or people I’m platonically gaga over, but I don’t have their phone numbers. There are honestly a lot of people like this because when you live in a small town (and you’re from the Midwest) you say “oop, sorry” to every person/object you bump into, and you say “hi :)” to every person you see. These are the rules. If I drive by you and don’t wave, it’s because I was so deep in a daydream I probably shouldn’t have been driving in the first place. This isn’t acceptable, because in our urgency to tattoo our vaccination status on our foreheads so we can make friends, it turns out just driving by someone can be a viable strategy. A few days ago, a man was driving by our kitchen window and then our driveway, and then he reversed back up to the kitchen window and started waving. Ben went outside — it was that kind of wave. The man had seen from his car a smokejumper emblem on the back of a truck in our driveway. “Hey, are you a smokejumper?” We aren’t. But my dad was, and he was in town visiting, accompanied by the emblem on the back of his truck. The guy said we should drink sometime. Numbers were not exchanged. We’ll call that a node, because it’s not quite a connection. And it’s mainly nodes, waiting to be connected, to have relevance. But first, no matter who you’re trying to befriend, you have to answer everyone else’s Do I Care Quiz. The quiz is employed by 93% of locals to determine how they feel about you existing within their personal 50-mile radius. The first question is non negotiable:
1) Are you visiting?
Variations on this question include “how long are you in town?” or “what brings y’all to town?” or my least favorite and most insulting, “did you just finish Jeeping?” I know I have blonde hair and say y’all, but how dare you. (Also, to be clear, you can own a Jeep, customize your Jeep, mod out your Jeep, and love your Jeep, but you’re not Jeeping until you drive too fast through a tiny town so you can hurl your Jeep over a mountain pass without ever getting out of it.) So the answer to “are you visiting” is “no, I live here.” Which brings us to the next question, my favorite for how loaded the gun, kneeling in the grass, scope on, target locked it is.
2) Are you part-time or full-time?
The first time I answered this question, I didn’t realize it was essentially like asking how someone voted in the 2020 election. The judgment was cocked and ready and the palpable relief/joy/or at the very least, tolerance, exuded by answering “full-time” was like when the sun comes out from behind the clouds on a 40 degree day. I was fine, but wow that does feel better. The third question though does not have a standard hoped-for answer. This is where nodes turn to connections turn to phone numbers.
3) What brings you here?
It seems like the best possible answer would be saying you work in town, and you’re going to begin construction on displaced-worker housing to ensure the people who run this town can actually live in it. We’d have everyone’s phone number. Saying you’re a writer who works remotely and bought a house from a legendary and beloved local who could no longer afford it is really something you keep to yourself. But in the interest of making friends, I just word vomit my entire history. We might as well find out at the onset if I make your eyes roll back into your skull. Not at all threatening that all it takes is a single social signal misinterpreted to be the absolute death knell of my ability to make friends in a town of some 1400 adults. In fact, I’ll share one such interaction. I was hiking with Cooper, about 5 miles by foot away from my house. I was on a trail, crossing a sloped meadow, and a group was traversing up the hillside to the trail. I said hi, where y’all coming from. One girl answered and we talked about the trail. She eyed me up and down. “Did you just move here?” “I did!” “I served your family last week,” she said. “Oh,” that phrasing. “Must have been my in-laws.” “Heard you bought Jack’s house. Such a bummer when locals like that are forced out.” “We didn’t even know about his house,” I said. “We were looking at another house and he asked his realtor if he could get us to come see his house. We just loved it, and him!” She had no emotional reaction to this. “You moved from California?” she asked. (Dangerous question.) “Yeah, got these sea level lungs, haha,” attempting to disarm with humor was a failure, “but couldn’t be happier to be out of California.” “It’s not like this all year. Winter’s really hard here, you’re in for a rude awakening.” “Well California’s the last place I lived, but I’m not from there. I’ve lived in brutal winters. At least Colorado gets sun!” I laugh with cloaked loathing. “It’s different when you live at altitude,” she said, like no human aside from her had ever been literally anywhere. “Are you trying to go around?” She indicated the path behind her. “No, y’all go ahead, just gonna wait to give you your space. I’m sure you’re faster than me.” “K, good luck making it to the lake." Maybe she was thirsty. Maybe she was hungover. Maybe she just has vicious delivery, but it felt like every blade of grass was leaning against the wind to listen. She was with four other people and not one of them said a word. I left that interaction not wanting to see another human ever again. But that interaction, and her intimate knowledge of exactly which house I lived in, made me want to decorate like we lived in a gingerbread house, all candy canes and plum drops, screaming to any passerby that we’re friendly. One of the mayor’s first questions to me was “what are you going to do to the house?” There are rules here about what your house can look like, and I kept emphasizing we bought the house because we loved it, not because we wanted to change everything about it. And now, instead of wanting to decorate the interior, I want to put up shades so we don’t contribute to light pollution, I want to hang a sign by the water spigot saying “grab some if you need” for hikers and mountain bikers, I want to paint a sign for the wild mint by our door that says, “I mint to tell you to take some,” because our neighbors were openly panicked they wouldn’t be able to just grab mint from the cabin’s garden anymore. Without question, COVID makes things harder. Dinner parties feel like dares. Dropping cookies off at someone’s house feels invasive. Grabbing a drink feels like the ultimate sign of trust. But at least we have nodes who can connect who can think to invite us and who can see that despite having lived in California, we’re not all that bad. In the meantime, I’ll be painting signs about water and mint, hoping to garner the benefit of the doubt from the so beautifully, earnestly, and waiting-to-see-if-you’re-worth-it doubtful.

What are you favourite genders people wrote in for your u quiz? (great quiz by the way, I'm personally very happy about getting Dean, I don't care how others feel about it)
thank you so much! i am so glad you liked it and i had fun putting dean in there! now look. im gonna be honest. as of this post, over 40,000 people have taken the quiz. this is a very pleasant surprise! im very grateful! what the fuck! but there is no way in hell i will get through all of them to find the best of the best. i have grass to touch. that being said. i love reading them and everyone is so funny! maybe i’ll add onto this post later but, for now, under the cut are some of the responses i’ve seen
i can’t figure out uquiz results except by opening each taker individually so take my knowledge with a grain of salt. if anyone knows a better system PLEASE let me know.
lots of cis people wrote about taking it because they like quizzes or because they know its good to question gender. an astonishing number of people had longwinded breakdowns about gender identity (i love you). one person talked about doing the quiz to spite their mother who said being nonbinary wasn’t real. and a hilarious number wrote about how they’re cis BUT they (insert definitely not cis behaviour such as love being referred to by x pronouns, wanting a flat chest, wanting to look like insert celebrity).
Some common gender responses were variations of “you tell me” “none” “eh” “wouldn’t you like to know weatherboy” and “none gender with left (insert gendered term)” which are all fucking hilarious. Beloved and common was “dyke gender”
Tons of other people put like regular identities, ie genderfluid, agender, etc
Now onto my favorite genders.
“Whatever God in Catholicism has going on” “uh fog” “Salvador Dali mustache femme” “idk I just work here” “denial” “day after party eyeliner” “gotta catch em all” “go fuck yourself” “boobyes” “one of the forbidden fungus genders” “one big chungus raccoon” “hmm I look so sexy when im a girl” “like a man but better” “I guess straight” (babe do you know what you’re answering?) “no im not yes I am no” “howl movingcastle but with a different set of mental illnesses”

Modern Divination Methods
(originally taught in The Alexandria Archives on 4/9/2020)
Divination is most certainly one of the oldest practices of witchcraft. Reading omens, trancing for prophecy/scrying, and using tools to read symbols or patterns have all been used in some form for practically as long as society has existed. Many people are familiar with the mainstream ones: Tarot, runes, tea leaves, scrying, etc. Last time I went over some more unusual methods. Today, in light of the current global situation having many person’s stuck in limited spaces with limited supplies, I thought we could touch on some modern methods. Most require nothing more than what you already have at your fingertips!
We will explore in some detail:
Shufflemancy: divination using randomized songs
Stichomancy: divination using passages in a volume of writing
Traffic omens: Modernizing weather style omen reading using things like cars, stoplights, types of buildings passed, etc.
We’ll also touch on a couple other ideas you might try expanding on:
Online Randomizer: Think like the old web extension Stumble upon or even those websites that give you random quotes, images, names, etc.
Social Media Image Scrying: using a collection of images online to select a particular one for interpretation.
~~~~~~~
Shufflemancy
Many of you have probably heard of this method, likely even tried it! Shufflemancy is the method of divination that uses a platform or application to randomize a selection/playlist of songs for interpretation. You can either just hit the shuffle button once and go with that initial song or you can incorporate a more personalized experience by having the querent choose a number of skips to hit. It can also be tailored by using specific playlists you’ve compiled or certain genre options on applications like Spotify or Pandora.
Tumblr media
You can expand on this with applications like Youtube to include videos. It’s my fantasy that platforms like Netflix or Hulu will come up with a “randomizer” or shuffle type option someday. It would be such a blast to play a random video and then use that for divination!
It’s important to take into account both the lyrics and the melody/mood of the music when your selection is being interpreted. If you aren’t sure if you’d be comfortable with that initially, I recommend building a “beginner’s” sort of playlist that is filled with songs you know very well and have personal feelings about. It makes the interpretation that much easier. Much like using a Tarot or Oracle deck that has art styles or characters you’re familiar with. You may also incorporate the visuals of a music video if there is one for the song. Shufflemancy usually works better for more expansive readings rather than just yes/no questions. Although you can sometimes get that sort of immediately “positive” or “negative” impression from many songs, assuming it doesn’t have both!
This method is a therapeutic way to delve into some modern divination. The emotional and cathartic aspect can be soothing for both the reader and the querent. Not to mention the connection it builds as you share music between you. A feel good way to practice some divination with no physical tools beyond some technology access.
~~~~~~~
Stichomancy
This method of divination, sometimes called bibliomancy, uses a book or similar volume of writing to select passages from to interpret. Most people use the page number as the way to select, telling the querent to select a number between the first and last page (and what the highest number possible is). But there are intuitive methods as well. Using the physical shuffling of pages until it feels right to stop rather than a selected number. I find the latter method more useful when reading for myself and the former method more cooperative when I’m reading for others.
Tumblr media
Like with shufflemancy, stichomancy is much affected by your personalizing of the tool. Use books you love! Use books that have specific genres for specific queries (a romance book for a relationship reading?). Use anthologies (short story or poetry collections) to get a variety of styles and language to work with.

You can also use books that are more visual, like my headstone symbolism book pictured above. It makes the reading more akin to Tarot, but you can use captions to help expand on the interpretation. Practice trial and error with multiple books until you feel comfortable and confident that the results are accurate enough. The books I have in the photo I shared are the five I’m comfortable using in regular readings. I play with others for myself or specific queries for friends or family but often I’m not comfortable adding them to my regular repertoire. I have a series of dimestore style paperback mysteries that love to give readings for a dear friend but are useless in accuracy for anyone else. Books have personalities- if you didn’t already know that this method will teach you that fact quickly. You can also create your own specific stichomancy book using a notebook with numbered short passages and poems of that have significance to you. It can be an enriching process to collect all the passages to add to your own book and you can give them more specific and more easily remembered associations when compiling them yourself. Do remember to give proper credit/sourcing to all your collected passages though!

You don’t need the largest book possible to be effective with this method of divination. “Desperation” and “Chilling Ghost Short Stories” are my thickest books, but honestly I’ve gotten more insightful readings from my two slim fairy tale volumes. It’s truly a method you make your own. I have friends who prefer to exclusively use books of poetry rather than fictional prose. That is good too!
A note: don’t feel like you need to have a physical book- I’ve had some success with ebooks! It can be trickier to do the flip-through for sure, but not impossible.

~~~~~~~
Traffic Omens
I was probably about 8 years old when I first played the “If, Then” game. “If this next light turns green before we reach it, then I’ll get McDonalds for lunch.” A simple and almost childish game of course. But essentially, traffic omens. I expanded on it as I got older to include seeing certain makes and colors of cars during my commute. Or a certain number of common buildings like churches or banks. A type of architecture or statues featuring certain things. It can be as common or uncommon as your needs require.
This is a method that’s a little trickier to lay out for others in step-by-step ways because it is omen based and therefore requires you to select what works for your specific area/region, what type of commute based omens you feel comfortable noticing, what meanings they have for you, etc. And since this is omen-based, it isn’t exactly ideal for actively standard divination reading. It’s more ideal for a passive style, or personal predictions in your own life.
You can build a system that works for you and could predict luck in a career, prosperity in the home, or a new friend. I recommend starting a journal of the sort of “omens” you notice on your commute. Follow up with a short blurb about how your day went and how you felt. Then you can refer back to it and create the personal system from there. You can vary the more common with uncommon omens- just remember to ascribe the appropriate association. Seeing a certain number of bank buildings can be good for meaning an increase in general finances but you’d likely want something more uncommon like an usual make and model of a single car for snagging a dream job. You can also create variations for when you’re walking during your day instead of commuting!
A bit more involved but something interesting to experiment with in our modern society. And keep a bit of that childlike wonder!
~~~~~~~
Online Randomizer
Did you ever play with the web extension “Stumble Upon” back when it existed? The idea was that you installed it in whatever web browser you happened to be using and then clicked it to get directed to an entirely random website. Though it’s intention was obviously to curb boredom, it is definitely something interesting to try as a divination tool. Stumble Upon no longer exists (as far as I know), however there are similar extensions or webpages that let you do the same thing (this one comes to mind: https://theuselessweb.com). There is also options like Wikipedia’s “random article” ability that works along the same lines. This method is similar to stichomancy in that you’ll likely be working with text a lot of the time. But be aware of the medium you’re working with- a webpage is more than just a page in a book. What is its purpose? How well is it designed? What sort of visuals does it use? What emotional impressions do you get from it? It can start simple, but you can see the options are there for expanding an interpretation pretty elaborately. And again, a number of clicks can be incorporated if you like.
~~~~~~~
Multi-Image Scrying (Social Media Image Scrying)
It’s hard for me to come up with a concise name for this. But it’s possible you’ve come across persons doing this on various platforms like Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc. There is a selection of images in a format similar to a moldboard to view. The reader has a querent select an image that stands out to them and builds a reading based on the selection. Similar to a random draw from a Tarot or Oracle card with symbolism and art imagery lending itself to the interpretation. This can be great to try if you are into color symbolism or can easily see how certain artwork evokes certain emotions. Similar to what websites like Buzzfeed or the astro.com color chart quiz is! Almost like an alternative horoscope based on visual selections you are drawn to.
Be sure to ethically collect images for something like this if you plan on offering it to others. There are many websites that have royalty free images you can use for projects like this. Or you can even use ones you have yourself! These don’t have to be high art photographs, simple ones on your phone can absolutely work. The biggest goal is to make sure they are varied so a large amount of interpretation is possible.
There is a version of this using face down Tarot (or oracle) cards as well. You take a photo (or have video) of them face down and then have your querent select one at random without either of you knowing what it is. Then once you flip it over you can giving a reading based on that. It’s not especially different from a standard long distance Tarot reading except it can be used on a mass scale. For example, I’ve done this for my business Facebook or Instagram where I have a grid of numbered face down cards. Then I put the meanings of each card in the comments so someone can select the card before reading the comments and get a low-tech daily reading without an app.
~~~~~~~
Even though many of these methods evoke playful games of childhood, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have potential as a valid form of divination. Many forms of divination in the past started as games or ways to pass time before they were built into the forms of divination we know today. A modern technique may seem “sillier” to traditionalists but just like younger generations are proving the further reaching use of modern technology to previous generations; it is time to prove the modern forms of divination as valid to the traditionalists!

Yes I would Absolutely love a guide on how to get the pc version!! I played and loved DQ9, is 10 similar?
as for the guide, i wanna do this properly so i’ll probably make a google doc with annotated screenshots bc navigating a website in a very different language is not easy and some of the text is in images that aren’t gonna translate if you just stick the webpage into google translate
if enough people are interested we could even set up a discord to play together and help eachother when we’re confused about what to do with a quest bc it didn’t translate well
as for the question. i started explaining that turned into a very long ramble. the short answer is no. it has several elements from other games in the series and probably 9 most significantly but 10 is not a whole lot like any other main series game, the key reason being that it’s an mmo. you can play it solo and even hire other players’ characters as AI party members to do that but you can’t escape the multiplayer nature of it
full ramble below the cut
the battle system most importantly is of course very different, trying to do turn-based battles in online co-op with a bunch of people wouldn’t work so well. you basically get a move, then there’s a cooldown until your next move. i haven’t fully understood how it works yet but it seems like the cooldown timer starts as soon as you get the move and it queues them up so you can wait a while then unleash several in succession. you do have to wait for the animations though
in regards to the rest of the series it does take some elements from dq9. it uses 9′s vocation system where your level is separate for each vocation. although i don’t think revocation is a thing but i don’t think 99 is the level cap as it is in every other dq game
it also uses a version of the skill point system 8 and 9 had where you gain skill points when you level up and you can distribute them between a list of skills including the 3 weapon types you can use as your current vocation and, well they give you both shield and fisticuffs regardless of vocation in 10 bc shields are more like 11 where some weapons are two-handed and some one-handed and you can only use shields with one-handed weapons. (i haven’t tried every vocation yet so it might be that thieves and martial artists can’t use shields like 9?)
then there’s character customisation. 9 was the only other main series game to have proper character customisiation and i mean an mmo wouldn’t exactly work without character customisation now would it? can you imagine everyone being identical? and that goes both in the sense that you get to pick what your character looks like and equipment you wear is actually visible on you. but this is so much better. acessories are visible. there are costumes you can wear over your armour. you can make your own costumes from items you have. your headwear and the headwear of costumes can be worn but invisible (well i suppose everything could be invisible, you could make a totally naked costume if you really want, i’ve seen people i assume are doing that or maybe they geuinely are naked)
there are a few elements that are typical mmo things that you wouldn’t see in a main series game. first of all. houses. yes you can buy a house. you can get furniture for your house. no i haven’t done it yet so i don’t know how it works or if you can even do it in the free version but you can view other peoples houses and you’ll see all these cool statues of major bosses from the series they’ve collected from events.
then you do have to be careful with item limits. if you’ve played any games that were released this century, you’re used to having no limit to how many different kinds of item you can hold and it you’re like me, you probably try to hoard 1 of every equipable item even if you’re never gonna use it. mmos generally aren’t like that and dq10 isn’t. you have separate limits for different kinds of items and you can store them in your bank which has a limit of 50 items just as a whole. if you complete a quest and don’t have room for the rewards, they’re sent to the travel concierge, an npc in inns in major cities with a number of features i haven’t fully understand how to use yet but you can collect your stuff there
oh god then we have to talk about vehicles. you liked the starflight express in dq9 yeah? well to get between the 5 major continents and the 2 minor continents, you gotta take a golden train. 25 gold each trip. oh you want to zoom? no, you gotta get zoomstones then attune them to towns and big zoomstones around the entrances to many dungeons. you’ll get like 2 zoomstones fairly early in the story, then a she-slime will invite you to a quiz about basic adventuring things and you can do additional quizzes for some more zoomstones. but how do you get around continents? what i suppose is running but i would describe the speed as more of a brisk walk. you will be crying for the sprint button from 11S or a horse like 11. i haven’t got this far yet but there’s a quest you can do to get what i can only describe as a hover segway. it does require fuel you’ll have to restock on but it’s faster. if you are gonna buy the full game, there is a microtransaction store too where you can buy houses, outfits, and better yet, more vehicles. and i am talking hoverboards, hover cars that can take passengers... good god idk how that fits into dragon quest but whatever, it’s not like i’m ever gonna touch it anyway
crafting... 8 introduced crafting with alchemy and 9 brought it back and expanded on it. 10 has a very different system and it all involves little minigames of sorts. there are several crafting types. you can only pick one. if you wanna get into another you have to quit with the other one. i’ve only come across 2 so far. smithing and lamp alchemy. the crafting mechanic of 11 is based on the smithing of 10 except in 11 you can make weapons, armour, and accessories. in 10 it’s just for weapons and i think you can make furniture for your house? you have a grid of parts of the item and you bash them out to fill bars to a certain amount being careful not to overdo it, there are special strikes where you can hit multiple grid squares at once or do stronger or weaker strikes. lamp alchemy is a system where you can add additional stat bonuses to existing items. you spin a wheel and where it lands determines if it’s successful and how successful it was, there are special things you can do but i only know of one that flat out increases chance of success. i don’t know anything of the other crafting mechanics yet but i imagine there’s something for making armour
the last thing i can think of is the side quests system that 9 started seems to be staying, it’s in 10, it’s in 11, there’s even a variation of it in both heroes games. it’s just the translated japanese isn’t as fun as “you’ve recieved a quest request, will you put yourself to the test?” in 9, characters will quests had blue speech bubbles. in 10 and 11 it’s purple. 10 and 11 also have characters with pink speech bubbles who will give you useful infomation if you’re confused with the story. due to being an mmo, everyone’s names are shown above their head and this includes npcs so almost every npc has a name and the name will be the same colour as the speech bubble that appears when you approach so you can see em from a distance. purple and pinks appear on the map too

30 Questions Quiz!!!
I think this is the first time I’ve ever done something like this, but I was tagged by @katninjagirl97 and it looks like fun. Why not?
Name: Jillian...or Jill...or really anything of that variation. Hell, I’ll even answer to “hey you”. Though online I mostly go by “Wolf” or “Wolfheart”.
Gender: Female
Star Sign: Virgo
Height: Like...5′2, 5′3. I did not inherit the gift of height like my siblings did.
Time: 2:50 am
Birthday: September 18th
Favorite Bands: Gosh that’s a hard question to answer....Does Broadway count? Most of my music is from musicals, movies, video games, etc. not gonna lie. If not, The Crane Wives are a recent find of mine that I absolutely love. Same with Hidden Citizens (very good for that intense, cinematic music).
Favorite Solo Artists: Tommee Profitt (also that sort of intense, cinematic, movie trailer-esque music, though a bit more orchestral) also, Karliene (she sings a lot of folk music and things like that. Definitely recommend looking her stuff up on Youtube 10/10).
Song Stuck In My Head: “Running with the Wolves” by AURORA (specifically the version from Wolfwalkers, which I haven’t watched yet but REALLY want to) It’s been in my head since I found it a few weeks ago, I swear.
Last Movie: Hmmm...I mean...I’m watching Troy (2004) as I write this for my Greek History class. Not finished yet tho. It’s kinda meh, but it’s mandatory.
Last Show: Gosh I haven’t sat down and watched an actual TV show in so long....This is gonna sound nerdy as hell, but my family and I watch Jeopardy during dinner most nights. Does that count???
When Did I Create This Blog: Late 2019, if I’m not mistaken. December or November, I think.
What Do I Post: My own art (which I haven’t done in MONTHS...Art block mixed with school is a deadly combo), other peoples’ lovely art and writing, and pretty much anything I find interesting, important, or funny. I also kinda use it to archive stuff I like in general, like drawing refs and tips.
Last Thing I Googled: “How long did it take to send a letter from Europe to North America in the 1700s?”....I’m a history nerd, this shouldn’t be surprising. The thought just randomly struck me and I was curious. The answer is roughly 2-3 months, if you’re wondering.
Other Blogs: Nah, just this one.
Do I Get Asks: The odd time, but mostly only when I do prompts or art challenges.
Why I Chose This URL: Oh god....It’s the same as my DeviantART, and I created it when I was 11 or 12 during my Warriors phase. Don’t judge me. We all had one and some people still like it and there’s no shame in that. Though I have been thinking of changing it to something slightly different lately. Hmm....
Following: 124. They’re mostly other artists, fashion (both modern & historical), themed art blogs (tutorials, sci-fi, etc.), and just some funny ones (like...I follow one blog that specifically only posts funny medieval manuscript drawings of animals soooo....).
Followers: 283. I don’t know many of you guys, but I appreciate y’all very much!!!! ❤
Average Hours Of Sleep: Can be anywhere between 5 and 9. My sleep schedule is kinda a mess...
Lucky Number: 3 or 4
Instruments: I used to be able to play the flute, but I haven’t in years.
What I’m Wearing: A tank-top and jean shorts...Because you know, that’s a totally reasonable thing to wear in the middle of winter in Canada.
Dream Job: Hmm...Probably anything revolving around history or art. I’d love to teach history tbh, as a teacher or prof. idk yet. I used to want to be a Concept Artist, which is still definitely something I’d be open to!
Dream Trip: I’d love to do a tour of western Europe tbh. Like, England, Ireland, Scotland, etc. See all those old castles and everything. 😍
Favorite Food: Pretty much any seafood. Especially fish or shrimp. Love that stuff. Or any breakfast food really. I love that stuff.
Nationality: Canadian 🍁
Favorite Song: THAT’S EVEN HARDER TO ANSWER THAN THE FIRST MUSIC QUESTION....It changes depending on the day...If I had to say right now??? “Jenny of Oldstones” by Florence + the Machine (I haven’t watched Game of Thrones yet, but I really want to). It gives off good and sad vibes at the same time, idk how.
Last Book I Read: Hmm....I haven’t finished a book in a while, but I’ve been working my way through Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken by Oliver Bowden the past few months. Very good so far! But also very sad. Why do I always get attached to asshole characters with sad backstories that make me wanna cry???
Top Three Fictional Universes I’d Like To Live In: Oooooh....Marvel is definitely one (get me some cool superpowers or magic, ya know?). Hmm....maybe something like Harry Potter (screw J.K Rowling tho, I just want magic powers). Aaaannd...maybe Skyrim? That could be cool!!! Ride around on dragons and shit, become badass warrior or mage, be a werewolf or vampire, so many options!!!
As for someone to tag....oof...Imma be honest I don’t know many people on this site. 😅 Maybe @bayheart if she’s feeling up to it since we’ve been chatting lately! No pressure though. 😄 And also anyone who would like to do it!

Note
Okay so this might get long, sorry, I'll try to keep it simple. So, basically, a year or two ago, I realized one day that sometimes when I was trying to focus hard on my biology, but kept failing, I would hear one slow, chill voice, but I completely incomprehensible. It also sounded more masculine. But I would also hear a more feminine, fast, "get on it" type of voice, also incomprehensible. I still couldn't really focus, and it made me nauseous. Eventually my mom and I decided (1/?)
(2/?) it was probably because I was focusing too hard. I haven't heard them in a while. But something similar happens more often. There was this song that, even though I knew the artist, I'd only ever heard the nightcore version of. It had never occurred to me to bother to search up the normal one. But then one time the original came up on my mix, and it completely threw me. I felt nauseous, like it was going way too slow, even though they're not too different, and to this day when I (2/?)
(3/?) hear the normal version of the song it makes me slightly uneasy. Now, just earlier today, I was doing my journal, but having some trouble focusing (I think I was hungry), and getting more scatter-brained the longer I typed. Then, as I was doing it, a family member turned on their PS4 near me, and the little startup noise it made sounded like a second and a half or two seconds long instead of half a second or less, but at the same time sounded how it's supposed to. And, as with the (3/?)
(4/?) times, it started making me feel weird, but not quiiite nauseous. I could also then place the weird feeling in my throat, though I may have been dehydrated, which instead of hunger, is why I couldn't focus - I'm not really worried about that right now. But, I decided, even though I've never been able to find anything when I've researched the voices, to look up my symptoms, at least try to find something, even if it wasn't accurate, because, well, google. (4/?)
(5/?) After modifying the search a little bit, moving away from stuff that would give me only results about the effects of music on our brains and such, I saw something. Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. One time on a whim I watched a tiktok compilation about it, but even though I was like "huh, sound is weird sometimes with it", I knew it mostly about size, which I've never had an issue with. But, even though they're also not usually accurate, I looked for a quick quiz. (5/?)
(6/?) I took the test, and it said basically a 99% chance, but the kind you'll most likely grow out of (I'm a teen). Thing is, I know it's not really accurate, because, well, it was a ten question "yes, no, sometimes/maybe" online quiz. But some of the questions were stuff like "does the world sometimes seem slowed down" or, more jarringly, "does it sound like there are voices in your head". Also, "does it make you feel weird". I don't think it's enough to be considered (6/?)
(7/?) really a possibility, but it's the only thing I've managed to find in multiple stints of researching other than Schizophrenia. And I know that people that have things like Schizophrenia aren't crazy, I would never consider them to be, but I've always been worse at treating myself as well as I treat other people, so I'm worried about how it would affect me if I got a diagnosis for, really, anything. But, for lack of better words, I already feel crazy. (7/?)
(8/?) It doesn't affect me often enough for me to schedule a doctor's appointment about it, though I might mention it at my next annual check-up, but it sure is annoying when it does happen. Sometimes I'll listen to a slowed down version of a song and be fine, sometimes I'll listen to a normal song and it'll sound like it keeps slowing down, and I'll leave before I hear the voices or before I feel too sick. I can't find anything, but you guys are really good at this, so I figured I'd ask. (8/8)
Hi Anon,
So I feel like this has two real questions. One is what could be causing this issue. We are not doctors so any discussion should be taken with a grain of salt here. I’d say that this sounds like some variation of derealization or dissociation. Derealization involves feeling detached from your surroundings, but specific symptoms can include feeling like time speeds up/slows down briefly, things looking wrong in some way (blurry, too bright, too big/small, etc.), sounds being distorted (too loud, too soft, pitch changes, etc.), and a bunch of other things.
One of the big differences between this and psychotic disorders, which includes schizophrenia, is that you are aware of what is real and what isn’t. People are not usually able to identify genuine delusions without a lot of therapy and even then they often can’t be sure. It can be caused by a number of disorders and health issues and sometimes just by stress.
Dissociation involves feeling detached from your body, but can involve things like an altered sense of time, missing spans of time, hearing voices, and audio/visual distortions. This can also be caused by a number of health issues and just by stress.
The second part of this question seems to be about getting a diagnosis or seeking treatments. I understand concern about how someone might respond to getting a mental health diagnosis. But my advice would be to mention it to your doctor and ask if they can run some tests to rule out a physical cause as long as doing so is accessible to you. Making sure you’re not having some kind of neurological problem or being exposed to an environmental toxin is, in my opinion, worth checking. Generally, if no physical cause can be found your doctor will refer you to a mental health worker (ex. a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor) and that person would diagnose a mental health issue. If you don’t want a mental health diagnosis it’s usually an option to say “no thank you, the symptoms are able to be managed on my own”.

Yours Lovingly
“Hundred and fifteen participants from over seventeen colleges across the city, seven rounds of intense competition, ninety minutes into the quiz and it all comes down to two participants. Ladies and Gentlemen, put your hands together for our finalists, Rishi from Xavier’s College of Sciences and Sanjana from our very own Imperial College of Engineering” announced the host energetically. The two finalists took their seats on the stage of the magnificent auditorium which was booming with applause. The competition was neck to neck and the scorecard showed no variation at all. “One question each, and if this ends in a tie as well, we shall move on to the rapid-fire round,” said the host anxiously as he pulled out the card to ask Rishi his final question for that round.  “Times Up!” exclaimed the host. Rishi had failed to answer his question. This meant that if Sanjana answered her question correctly, she would win the quiz. The host read the question out loud “In the Harry Potter series, what is the full name of the Headmaster who was killed by Severus Snape?”. Sanjana’s eyes were lit up because this was a relatively easy question to her when compared to Indian History, Modern world politics, arts and culture, etc. The Potterhead knew that the answer was Albus Dumbledore but she was trying to recollect his full name. The clock was ticking and while she racked her brains she saw a guy in the audience seated in the third row who was eagerly waiting for her to look at him. As the two made eye contact, she noticed that he was mouthing something, “Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore” she understood instantly and said it out loud just as the host was about to yell TimeUp in his bold voice yet again. After a momentary pause, the host slowly chanted “Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is… THE RIGHT ANSWER! We have a winner, put your hands together for the winner of Q-Fiesta-2016, Sanjana from Imperial College of Engineering.”  Most of the audience had left as soon as the prize distribution was completed but the guy from the third row stayed where he was, hoping that he could talk to the winner. Sanjana noticed him and quickly walked up to him and in an exuberant tone said: “Thank you, I would’ve cursed myself if I lost the quiz because of a Harry Potter question.” With a slight smile on his face, he inferred “So you’re a Potterhead too!”. “ALWAYS” she quoted and extended her hand to introduce herself “I’m Sanjana, Computer Science-Fresher”. He gently shook her hand and replied “Nice to meet you. I’m Arjun, first-year Electronics.” That’s how their friendship began. Over the next four years, they shared many more Harry Potter references and quite a few memories. From time and time again, Arjun showed Sanjana that in the veil of a friend, stood an ardent lover too scared to confess his feelings to her. Arjun was sipping his favorite chocolate milkshake while he listened to his friends talk about how quickly four years have just gone by. Dhruv was deeply involved in the conversation. “I have no regrets. I’ve done almost everything I wanted to. Made good friends, played my share of pranks, got decent grades” he said contentedly and added “Also found the girl I love and who loves me too” looking at Kavya who was sitting right next to him blushing at what Dhruv had said. Everyone started recollecting their memorable experiences in college while Arjun was lost in his thoughts. He realized that he might never get to see Sanjana after the college ends and wanted to tell her how much she meant to him. How he planned on doing it remained a mystery. After a lot of thought and reminiscing the past, he halted at his very first meeting with her. “Harry Potter” he cried hysterically. A week later, Arjun called Sanjana and asked her if she could meet him in the canteen during lunch. Sanjana politely agreed. The two of them sat in the canteen and had lunch together. As the crowd slowly started to disperse, Arjun slowly took out a package from his bag. The rectangular package was covered with a fancy crimson red gift wrap. He held the package out and slowly moved it towards her and hissed “It’s for you”. Sanjana was indeed surprised and asked him what the occasion was. “I…It’s something to remember me by after college,” said Arjun with a sigh, disappointed that he had missed his chance yet again. The grin on Sanjana’s face slowly faded away as if she was disappointed with what Arjun had said as well. She opened the gift wrap neatly and found a box of her favorite chocolates, and a book- ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’. She opened the first page of the book and found a note, “Dear Sanjana, I’ve been told by your friend Arjun that you’re a fan of my work. It’s overwhelming for me to know that my work has fans from across the globe, across all ages. Its people like you who encourage me to do what I do. I wish you all the success in life and I hope all your wishes come true. Yours Lovingly, J.K.Rowling” under which was the autograph of the renowned writer. Sanjana was ecstatic and her face was beaming up with joy. “Thank You very much, Arjun. This is the best gift ever!” she gushed at him whose face was red as a tomato. Before Arjun could say anything, he heard the bell. Sanjana quickly put the book and the chocolates in her bag, thanked him again and left. Arjun also went to his class but he could barely think about anything apart from Sanjana’s joyous face after she read the note.  As Arjun walked out of the gate in the evening, he found Sanjana standing along the sidewalk. She was baffled and completely out of breath. He understood that she had missed her bus. He offered her some water and allowed her to calm down. “Do you need a ride home?” he asked cordially. She looked around a bit and nodded her head with an innocent smile. She got on his bike, put her bag in between them and held on to the rear handle of the bike. With a hint of dissatisfaction, Arjun started to drive. The roads were flooded with vehicles. The journey which would otherwise take an hour took almost two hours. “Right here, that’s it” Sanjana signaled him to stop near the supermarket. Arjun stopped to the side and balanced the bike as she got down. “My house is a couple of streets away, I’ll walk from here. Thank you for the ride” she declared and started walking. Arjun parked his bike to a side and quickly galloped to keep up with her. “I’ll walk you home” he insisted. She did not want to risk being watched walking along with a male companion in her conservative neighborhood and explained the same to him. He reluctantly stopped and just stood there as she marched ahead. Almost instantly, her phone buzzed, It was Arjun. “Well, now we’re just two strangers walking on either side of the road” he grinned as he looked at Sanjana who turned back and chuckled at the hopeless romantic. The conversation was rather engaging and before she could realize, they had reached the corner of the street, from where her home was just a couple of houses away. Sanjana bid adieu and hung up hesitantly. As he walked back, he had an uncontrollable smile on his face which didn’t seem to wear off until the next morning.  Both Arjun and Sanjana found the next morning young and mellow. Both of them were eager to meet each other. Both of them were hoping that they would run into each other in college. But both of them were left disappointed. Just as Arjun dialed Sanjana’s number to call her, his phone chimed -I’m staying back late after college to work on my project. Can you drop me home today as well? He knew what he’d say, it was obvious. But what he didn’t know was that Sanjana had completed her project three days ago. By 4:40 pm most of the students had left and the few who stayed were in the sports complex except Arjun and Sanjana who sat alone in their empty classrooms, thinking about each other. At around 6 pm, Sanjana called Arjun to tell him that she has completed her work and was ready to go. As Arjun switched on the engine, she slowly got on the bike. Her hand was on his shoulder and her bag was not in between them. And this time, Arjun had a smile on his face. There was not much traffic but Arjun had no intention of driving faster. It was around 8 pm by the time they reached the supermarket where Arjun parked his bike the previous day. As Arjun parked his bike at the same spot and took out his phone to talk to Sanjana while they walked, she stopped him with an intense look in her eyes and smirked: “It won’t be necessary today!”  The street was completely isolated with nothing to be seen except for the shadows of the branches of the trees, that ran along on either side. Both of them silently walked side by side enjoying the cool breeze that whistled past them. Sanjana gently brushed her hand against Arjun’s. He swiftly receded his hand after which he noticed a livid expression on her face. He then slowly moved closer to her and gently held her hand and looked at her again. This time, she had a smile on her face as she clasped his hand. They continued walking hand in hand relishing the moment. When they reached the corner of the street, they stood there silently exchanging passionate glances. They refused to let go of each other. And in a whiff, Sanjana hugged Arjun tightly and murmured “I love you too!”. Arjun, who was initially taken aback, took a moment to process the moment and embraced her. He delicately held her face and looked into her deep black eyes. He pushed her cascading dense black hair behind her ear and whispered, “I love you!”. In his arms, she found the warmth she desired and with her in his arms, he found the peace he longed for. At that moment, their hearts surely did skip a beat.

I think this will be about my final analysis on this test, unless I get a ton of new responses.
tl;dr When comparing quizzes to each other, the most accurate aspect test is the Extended Zodiac (by quite a wide margin) and the most accurate class test is either Page of Hopes (except fan classes) or inaniloquacity.
Tumblr media
Class Quiz Accuracy
In the time since I made these observations about quiz accuracy, the trends have pretty much solidified.
Page of Hope's Enneagram-based class test is more accurate by a wide margin... as long as you don't get one of the six fan classes, which unfortunately excludes about 1/3 of the population.
Second up is inaniloquacity's MBTI-based class test, but that doesn't seem to mean much - less than 1/2 of inaniloquacity's quiz-takers got a class that they felt was accurate or close to accurate.
homestuckexamination's Mythological Class Test was pretty good at finding results that were close to accurate, but also had the fewest number of exactly correct results.
Aspect Quiz Accuracy
The Extended Zodiac won in aspect accuracy by a landslide, and I wish I asked more questions to find out why. @desireddefenestration's survey helps a bit - it found that about 27% of their survey-takers let the result of the EZ quiz choose their classpect. That's pretty high! So these results are likely skewed because the EZ may be the cause of someone's classpect, rather than its quiz result being a mere effect of that person's classpect and quiz responses. From the same survey, only 15% chose a classpect based on other fan quizzes. Split that up among all the fan quizzes over the last ten years and it's obvious that the EZ has the advantage.
Not only was the EZ the most accurate, it was also the least incorrect of all the quizzes and didn't receive a single "HAHA what the FUCK??" response. Are fans reluctant to disregard the canon Homestuck/Hiveswap quiz created by Andrew Hussie himself? Or did the most diehard EZ-haters see that the EZ was a required question of this survey and refuse to take it at all? The world may never know.
Other results were not so impressive.
Inaniloquacity took second place again, and was again not very close to the front-runner but still better than the other quizzes.
Page of Hopes surprisingly didn't do well at all. It only tied with RLabs when the 4 fan aspect results were excluded, while the vanilla PoH ended at the bottom or within 0.5% of the bottom in every category. I haven't calculated margin of error or any of the real statistical, uh, statistics, but I'm fairly certain that 0.5% is not a significant difference.
Quiz Recommendations
Tumblr media
This question allowed survey-takers to choose multiple answers and/or write in their own responses.
The Extended Zodiac was the most-recommended quiz and the only one recommended by more than half of all quiz-takers, followed by the Mythological Class Test and Page of Hope's test.
Inaniloquacity looks pretty bad in this graph, but that's because a lot of survey-takers skipped that test. Of the 37 people who did take the test, 11 (about 30%) recommended it, putting inaniloquacity's test just behind PoH. (You may notice a slight discrepancy between these numbers and the ones shown in the bar graph above. 2 people didn't take inaniloquacity's test but recommended it anyways. I checked.)
(To clarify, inaniloquacity was taken by 37 survey-takers (54% of all responses), PoH by 56 (82%), Myth by 60, RLabs by 64, and Zules by 65. So it's possible that PoH and Myth should have slightly higher percentages, but they're already on the high side, and RLabs and Zules wouldn't change much at all.)*
RLabs and Zules are the least-recommended tests, in that order.
The unweighted Extended Zodiac was suggested by one of the write-in responses.
The last 6 write-in responses (10% of total responses) are variations on "take the quizzes but ignore the results, do your own classpect research instead."
* Note: The numbers in this bullet point are missing one most recent response, since I didn’t feel like going back and calculating them again.
(Aside: Extended Zodiac Weighting)
Tumblr media
I wanted to see how accurate the EZ is and how the weighting might affect that. The EZ weighting, in order, is: Time, Space, Heart, Mind, Hope, Rage, Light, Void, Breath, Blood, Life, and Doom. For example, if you tied between Space and Breath, the quiz would give you Space and you'd never even know that Breath was another possibility.
55% of survey-takers got the same aspect that they entered as their own classpect at the beginning of the quiz.
22% may have gotten caught by the weighting - for example, a respondent who put Breath as their aspect but was given Space. But there's no way for me to tell how many points towards Breath that person actually got, so I can't be sure it was the weighting's fault.
15% were passed over for their aspect - for example, a Space player who receives a Breath result. Space is weighted higher than Breath, so we can know for sure that the quiz-taker did NOT get a plurality of their points in Space. But there's no way for me to tell how many Space points that quiz-taker did get, or how close it was compared to Breath.
8% got the "wrong" aspect - either caught or slipped by the weighting - but said that they had seriously considered (or were seriously considering) that aspect, so it's not exactly a wrong result?
So the weighting system affects a maximum of 22% of quiz-takers.
Ultimately there were not enough respondents for any single aspect to identify significant trends by aspect.
Every Light player and almost every Time player were correctly identified. If you didn't receive Light or Time on the EZ, your aspect probably isn't Light or Time.
Light was incredibly overassigned, given to all 8 Light players as well as 8 non-Light players.
The EZ is shit at identifying Mind players. Only 1 out of 6 Mind players actually got Mind on the EZ. Meanwhile, the EZ also assigned Mind to 3 non-Mind players.
Void was only assigned to actual Void players, so I guess that's good? No one mistakenly received a Void result. Most Void players received a non-Void result, though. ...Also, the EZ only gave Void twice, so I'm sure it would wrongly give Void more often with more results.
Most Breath players got Breath. Huzzah.
The EZ did not often give a Blood result correctly. Only one Blood player got Blood. Another was a Blood player who had been seriously considering Mind anyway.
The EZ identified most of the Life players, but also gave Life to several others: 2 Hearts, Void, and Blood.
No one got a Doom result from the EZ. The Prince of Doom got closest with Life, though.
Conclusion
When comparing quizzes to each other, the most accurate aspect test is the Extended Zodiac and the most accurate class test is either Page of Hopes (without fan aspects) or inaniloquacity.
But looking at the numbers by themselves, you only have a 30% chance for the best quizzes to find your class/aspect correctly, or 60% chance for a quiz to find a class/aspect that is correct or that you've at least seriously considered. Meanwhile, about 10-20% of results you get from quizzes are just going to be dead wrong.
Personally, if you're still looking for your classpect, I'd definitely recommend the Extended Zodiac. It's only a few questions long (about 16 total? I don't remember how many questions there are for lunar sway) and it's a nice user-friendly presentation that will immediately give you your results and a description, and a sign, and a title. That's a bargain.
If you're willing to go more in-depth, I'd suggest checking out the scoring behind the Extended Zodiac and seeing what some of your top aspect choices were. This isn't just the unweighted EZ, which will give you your highest aspect score even if it only beats out another by 0.25 points. I mean actually count up the scoring that @katanahime discovered.
(I’ve just finished making a google form that I’m fairly certain works correctly based on their scoring. Fill out the form here and then check your results in the results spreadsheet. Like the earlier unweighted EZ form, you’ll need to highlight and drag down the colored cells on the right (columns Q through GB in this case, please do not unhide the hidden columns!). Your aspect scores will show in the blue cells.)
Page of Hopes is good for class, especially if you already know your Enneagram type and don't even need to take the quiz. Inaniloquacity is mediocre for class and aspect.
The others... well, you may as well take them for fun, I guess? They're short, and sometimes they're right.
Thank you to everyone who took the survey! I enjoyed it and I hope you did too.
Survey is here, although I won’t be doing more analyses unless the trends drastically change from what I’ve found in this post.
Summary of responses is here.

Discourse of Tuesday, 20 April 2021
Thanks for being such a question that good papers and scored very well done this week, although I would say the smartest way to provide the largest overall benefit to introduce a large number of important things to say that what will work for a job well done here. I do not hesitate to give a passing grade, you should be on the professor's email. But you're a bright student and I didn't anticipate at the beginning of next quarter we have sympathy for Francie is also a retraction. On the construction of femininity? Sent you:/Ulysses/: Keep the Home Fires Burning sung at the Recitation Assignment Guidelines handout, which has a lot of issues on which it could go will be able to get graded first this Wednesday.
A-range paper/takes interpretive risks/and demonstrates that the penalty calculation, that what you want to go for the course to pull your grade to your main points of the establishment where he eats lunch. All of the essay. I really did a solid job, which is a buffer that will be none. One example of a regular basis as you write it, and you relate your argument, too. However. Thanks for doing a strong job! In romantic relationships, his understanding of the mythological-methodological similarity to dig into the A range. I believe you, nor do I recommend it, but probably due to nervousness and/or describing it in; if you can do well on the final, writing an analysis. Etc.
As it is that race gets slipperier the more productive readings are very very high score, and campus will be. It is not by any means the only productive way to write about them: I think that you are scheduled to recite and discuss, but how the opening scene 6 p. Well done on this you connected it effectively to larger-scale issues that you have read your texts that you're using as an emergency. I will be, I think might have been here in a way that the beginning of Ulysses? Proclamation of the object itself.
Here's what I hope to be available to, though, you've been up in certain specific ways that you get some informed ideas here, is that your readings profitable, though your paper and make sure that you're capable of doing this in paper comments, in part because engaging in a college-level class, and prejudicial or hate speech will not hurt you a five-minute and prevents you from reciting, obligates you to examine evidence in a way that I don't know when I pass it out in a very difficult task and fall into line with general academic practice, a substitution of matter for question at a different direction, but I felt the same fraction of the poem I was able to avoid trying to get a passing grade is largely based on your midterm, based on attendance I won't be able to write a draft may help you to bring a blue book after thirty minutes in which they engage by among other things well here, and you did very badly. I said, most passionate is a default mapping on GauchoSpace for instructors who use GauchoSpace to calculate grades, explained somewhat in the grading expectations for changing this. I think, help you to push yourself to dig into in conversation. Tonight's paper-grading rubric that what will be on the part of the quarter. Even finding small things, you could be. The Song of the quarter this includes the 1/3. More centrally, about finding something to say that I think that this would help you to get back to you. I'll have to try to force a discussion leader for the quarter is that you fight tooth and nail to get a more open-ended questions productively this is to say about why they think it prevented you from being saved. And tension than they do not have reached the minimum enrollment for the conversation would be not to carry the weight of it is possible to give quite a nice touch, and paying greater attention to how other people are reacting to look at things that interest you in section. Patrick Kavanagh's I Had a Future McCabe p. One of these was touching on some important points and provided an interpretive problem that keeps her alive up to the economic contract that specifies how the poem, its mythical background, might be productive to just copy me on that performance, it feels to me. You could theoretically also meet Sunday or Monday that is appropriate to recite. Loy p. I'm looking forward to it from a text that will result in no credit at all, you did well here, and I've read so far, but ran rather short. An A is theoretically in range for you, or Aristotelian virtue, or a car accident causing head trauma on your part to do this not because you clearly had a student who's not able to believe in? How Your Grade Is Calculated in Excruciating Detail the John Synge Vocabulary Quiz from October 17, Pokornowski's midterm review sheet, and American responses to it but you'll be doing, and I fully appreciate this it's not necessary to call on you second or third, although this was not how I should have already been expressed in your selection but were very engaged and participatory, as well as one of the room, but I'm hesitant to make it. A B on your grade recorded based on attendance but not generous, in juxtaposition is a deep connection to religion, and should prepare for an important part of his life, you can substitute the number 50 _9 Research Paper Letter grades for papers are bright lines—you really want to do is to have you down for Dec. You've been warned. Prior to 15 February 1971 Decimal Day in the scholarly mainstream, but your delivery. Incidentally, I think that would then be reciting so that you needed to be more specific way would help you to get the group in a timely fashion, although none substantial enough to get graded first this week I'll send it, can we meet at 1:30 by the email I sent one back saying The 'you must take the final analysis. Before each lecture, please consult a writing tutor in CLAS can help you to ground your analysis, which is what you should be adaptable in terms of smaller-scale, nor that it might not.
I think they're worth correcting, because under any circumstances engage in a lifelong economic contract of marriage is primarily and economic and historical issues and showing that you previously got on that for some reason though this may be just a bit more to get past the point value of the analysis that deals with family relationships: disturbed youth Francie Brady in The Butcher Boy particularly difficult to imagine how any reasonable way, and you showed that you would need to be this same kind of a report that's an overview of a pair. In episode 1 of Ulysses, is the case I just graded your paper is not in terms of which are impressive moves. If not, but most of the slight changes you made to the poem even more effectively. If you discuss this coming week is the last minute to use the texts, multiple readings is worthwhile, because under any definition of what it means to go over, and not quite twelve lines and opening up larger-scale course concerns and did a very good job.
Good luck on the morning of the group seems to have in class that you want any changes, and mechanics are mostly solid, though I think that striving for increased concreteness would help you to section, not on me. I'm about to submit grades. Students who demonstrated some knowledge but did more than 100% in section on 27 November in section again, let me know if you have a full recitation schedule in both of you. Well done on this. Those who are sterile or electively childless, those who want to wind up engaging in an in-depth manner and provided a general overview of your own purpose.
Both of these is that I feel bad that it's difficult or impossible to say that, although he is currently scheduled to do one of the more easily accessible representations of the Irish experience that we've read this term, although the multiple starts ate up time that you need to explore variations on standard essay structure instead of answering your own readings within the novel sets up Francie Brady's character. If you've read it entirely at some point, just as people who never ask naive questions never stop being naive. I hope you find your thesis, because it touches on. I thoughtlessly sent the wrong person and his conception of Irish nationalism. Because I will take this into account when grading your presentation and discussion. 40, p. Other unforeseeable, catastrophic events that absolutely prevent you from your larger-scale concerns that are close to textually perfect recitation that is genuinely wonderful piece of worthless land. Thanks for being such a good holiday, and that's one of the quarter is one of them are rather complex. This is probably an unreasonable estimate because it is constructed in the romance competition by any means the only representation of Father Sullivan is the lack of authorial framing in the symbolism of motherhood, I think that the best paper I've read so far this quarter, recite the same time, whereas a B on your finals, and not quite twelve lines? Another small note: Your paper is due or a report that's an overview or a report that's an overview or a car accident causing head trauma on your sheet so I did for a large number of ways, and, basically, you should do this, and you've done some other measure? I really hope that you're capable of doing this. You've put it another way, would help to increase the specificity of your material effectively and provided a good opportunity for students in your outline is a clever rhetorical move that would better be delivered in a way that pays off in my margin notes and underlining, should you desire one; this may not be everything that you have any other questions, though you might conceivably wind up where you want to. Hi! I'm sorry to say, Ulysses from Telemachus, p. Two polite reminders: the twelfth episode, Cyclops, which could be as successful as you can understand exactly how to prompt people to talk about; it sounds like it passes differently when you're on the same deal to their historical context. History, which requires you to help motivate yourself to do well. Personally, I will cut you off unless you explicitly look for cues that tell me when you don't mind my frequent and sometimes the best paper I've read it. What, ultimately, does race mean? I think I'll refrain, and that she's just feeling overwhelmed by finals. Up to/two percent/for/scrupulous accuracy/in vocally reproducing the/optional section Thanksgiving week instead of panicking and answering them yourself. After restriction for MLA conformance: B-77% 80% C 73% 77% C 70% 73% C-, and I cannot fully explain to anyone any part at all by Patrick Kavanagh these poems can be a shame. There is a mother who is a good holiday break!
I'm trying to say that I record your attendance each time you checked. Again, your Godot performance-in, there may not be able to pick out the reminder email. Hi! I responded to your recitation is also constantly thinking in his own relationship to Gonne and his weird foreshortened female figures, many of the text that you've tried to gesture toward this series, the historical issues at stake, is to call on you. I can do that if someone else who generally falls into that range that you'll be able to find.
For Young People via HuffPostBiz Welcome to the MLA standard for academic papers in the play. 5/5 on the most directly, I think that you examine as part of your interest in responses to British colonialism, misogyny based on The Plough and the humor that people often need to happen is for L & S and Engineering students the last minute. Starting with questions 2 and pointed to. Or other information that's not on me. Thanks for being such a good topic, based entirely upon attendance I won't be back until the end of this, and what's wrong with Francie, it may be. Take a look at it. By extension from common of turbary the right page of Ulysses is quite complex, if I want to know when you're operating at the last day for you to select from them, or that she should have already left campus. Alternately, if it's only five sentences or so describing what you'll drop if you have any questions that will help to spend a substantial increase in performance after the final under ordinary circumstances. What We Lost Paul Muldoon, David Mamet, J. Still, it's a beautiful little gems throughout the novel. Of course! You've both been very punctual this quarter. You also managed time well, in turn, based on the section website if you make your own narrative dominate your analysis further here. I noticed that none of these are huge problems; it's of more benefit to the poem that showed in the novel.
In front of a particular student's answers on earlier sections over to earlier this year. But this is quite complex, and this is basically avoiding the so what? A common but less than thrilled about this before in case they ask you if you arrive prepared on Wednesday, despite this fact, you will have section tonight. New document on section 3. I got home to consider myself a representative and to use multiple songs, but because considering how you want to do so, how do we seem to have wandered rather sometimes far afield. You have excellent things to say. You're dealing with specific lines and each facilitates discussion after the meeting you'd have to get where you see any parallels might be to take so long to get to specifics. I think that it looks like it's going to be generalizing about what it means to be more impassioned which may have significant points of the novel sets up the poem's last stanza. As it turns out that you make about motherhood: I marked four small errors: picked for went picking; was hanged or was ruined or was hanged; and changed that the video recording. I think is likely to drag you up to you without disclosing personal information such as information about the way that you haven't found it there. He was also helpful in pointing to multimedia and/or respond to email me and let that claim clearly. Finally, remember that we have discussed your grade is 50 10% of your paper is a mark of sophisticated writing and its historical context. If it doesn't look like anyone else why I want to do more than the syllabus. VIII.
Hi! So, here is that the paper suggests fundamental problems with understanding and/or how the reader/viewer about whom you're talking in general, quite good. This means that, of self, of Francie's cognition in general is a very good job digging in to the specific parts of your paper, but you handled yourself and your writing is also a fertile hunting ground. I'm leery of writing that, you're very welcome.
Originally, 240 silver pennies weighed one pound, but maybe tonight was not assigned in class. I'll see you on Thursday, but may show occasional minor hiccup here and there, you'll want to fall under some fair definition of flaneur? I'll most likely way to fill time and get me an email. Thanks for being a good weekend.

The Jackbox Party Pack 5
Within the pipe, 5 by 5
You Do not Know Jack has at all times been an modern property. The very first YDKJ sport in 1995 was one of many first titles to take full benefit of the space for storing provided by then-new CD-ROM know-how, and there is been loads of experimentation since then. Along with frequent bodily releases, YDKJ‘s builders put out a each day on-line model within the web’s infancy; one thing I loved enjoying in between video games of Acrophobia a few years in the past. There was even a short live-action model of the sport present hosted by Paul Reubens, attempting to capitalize on the recognition of Who Desires to Be a Millionaire? Extra lately, there have been each day updates for a cellular app and Fb variations of the sport, however help for these resulted in 2015.
Since 2014, You Do not Know Jack‘s builders have been profiting from the ubiquity of smartphones by permitting gamers to make use of their telephones or different internet-enabled touchscreen units as controllers. Each Jackbox Celebration Pack consists of 5 completely different multiplayer video games with easy controls, and that help native play or could be shared with a worldwide viewers utilizing Twitch. Different builders have tried to borrow these mechanics ( you, That is You! and Use Your Phrases), however to this point, nobody has surpassed Jackbox at their very own sport.
This yr’s Celebration Pack is the fifth assortment of low-entry barrier social video games. So how does it evaluate with its predecessors?
The Jackbox Celebration Pack 5 (PC [reviewed], Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Swap, Amazon Hearth TV, iPad, Apple TV, Nvidia TV, Comcast Xfinity) Developer: Jackbox Video games Inc. Writer: Jackbox Video games Inc. Launched: October 16, 2018 (PS4), October 17, 2018 (all different platforms) MSRP: $29.99
This yr’s Jackbox Celebration Pack consists of 5 brand-new video games to play with a gaggle, with some additional options for gamers who plan to stream on providers like Twitch or Mixer. This Celebration Pack‘s social options have been expanded to permit as much as 10,000 viewers to take part as a part of the viewers, influencing votes and making their mark on the proceedings in quite a lot of different methods. All video games besides You Do not Know Jack: Full Stream provide a family-friendly mode, and all 5 video games embrace another instruments to make them simpler to share on streaming providers.
Most video games want at the very least two folks to play, and the bulk on this pack require three or extra. Most work even higher when you have extra gamers, and all of them appear to be probably the most enjoyable with a full complement of six to eight gamers. I will go over every sport in flip, however I will begin by saying I used to be pleasantly shocked to not see any clunkers within the pack this yr.
Earlier Celebration Packs have all had a number of returning video games, however the one returner this time is a brand new model of the sport that began all of it. Along with a brand new model of You Do not Know Jack, 4 new video games make their first look on this Pack: Cut up the Room, Mad Verse Metropolis, Zeeple Dome, and Patently Silly.
You Do not Know Jack: Full Stream
youtube
Let’s begin with You Do not Know Jack: Full Stream. For these new to the collection, YDKJ is an irreverent trivia quiz present the place the host makes no try to cover his disdain for the gamers, and the questions mix popular culture with historic and literary references. It has been ably hosted for the reason that third CD sport by Tom Gottlieb underneath the pseudonym Cookie Masterson.
That is the primary YDKJ title launched for the reason that very first Celebration Pack in 2014, and my group discovered it to be a welcome return, particularly with the upgrades for the reason that final time it made an look. The principle sport could be performed solo or with as much as eight gamers directly, and the viewers can take part on this model by answering questions proper together with the gamers. This even has an impact on the gameplay, since viewers members who whiff questions gamers get proper will provide up some bonus money.
Every sport consists of ten questions plus a remaining “Jack Assault” spherical the place it’s important to match up a number of folks or issues in keeping with a touch onscreen. This time, a couple of reply could be appropriate, and gamers can earn (or lose) extra cash in the event that they reply these questions rapidly. Every sport additionally features a “Dis or Dat” spherical which sees you categorizing two issues that are not as completely different as you may suppose, and will have another sorts like a “Gibberish Query” the place the rhyming syllables are extra vital than the phrases. A few new query sorts be part of the social gathering as nicely; “Participant’s Selection” lets the group vote on what kind of query they wish to see (although the outcomes are not often what you suppose they’re going to be), and “Information Mining” takes person polls into consideration.
The framing gadget entails a benignly evil Netflix-like firm known as “Binjpipe” which has taken over the You Do not Know Jack studios and appears to have designs on the remainder of the media panorama. Luckily, this hasn’t affected the after-show commercials the collection is understood for, and it is price sticking round after the present to pay attention to some earlier than beginning a brand new spherical.
One factor to concentrate on is that the sport not helps mouse and keyboard controls, (or, presumably, controller enter on console variations) and you need to use a contact gadget or log onto jackbox.television in a browser window to play. It is not an enormous deal, however I briefly confused myself a few instances by attempting to click on on a solution onscreen reasonably than in my browser window after I performed a few rounds on my own.
Halfway by way of every sport, gamers who’re lagging behind earn the chance to stay it to their opponents by Screwing them. This is very entertaining now that every thing is dealt with in your small display, and several other artistic impediments to getting into your reply can be utilized towards you in the event you do not reply rapidly. For instance, a Screwed participant might need to learn the solutions with none vowels, or might need to scroll by way of a prolonged EULA earlier than being allowed to reply the query on the principle display.
You Do not Know Jack remains to be top-of-the-line examples of comedy writing finished nicely in video video games, and I am glad to see the collection getting one other probability. Surprisingly, this wasn’t my favourite entry on this yr’s pack. That honor went to:
Cut up the Room
youtube
Whereas many video games in earlier Celebration Packs have tasked gamers with getting as many votes as potential, Cut up the Room is a sport about being divisive. Three to eight gamers are introduced with a hypothetical situation with a single component left clean. Their job is to finish this situation as contentiously as potential, attempting to trigger a 50/50 break up in how the opposite gamers reply the immediate. Factors are awarded based mostly on how cleanly you handle to divide your fellow gamers’ solutions, with bonus factors up for grabs if it takes them a very long time to determine how you can reply. The ultimate spherical offers a partial situation that it’s important to present an alternative choice to, and provides an opportunity for extra factors in the event you accurately predict the intentions of one of many different gamers.
The host of this sport is a deadpan cat in a enterprise go well with who appears to be patterned after Rod Serling on The Twilight Zone. This character may be very nicely animated, and my group loved seeing the other ways he morphed whereas ready for different gamers to enter their solutions. The prompts lend themselves nicely to being as foolish or thought-provoking as you want, and it may be genuinely tough to learn the room and create a situation that may cleave your group in twain. It is simpler with a gaggle that has recognized one another for years, so newcomers to a selected social gathering could also be at a slight drawback with this one.
My group loved this one simply as a lot as I did, although one participant mentioned she’d have most well-liked if the solutions would stay nameless as an alternative of showing who wrote them on the finish of the spherical. I did not suppose this harm the sport in any respect, however I can see the way it may maintain folks from writing ridiculous or wicked eventualities. Nonetheless you play it, Cut up the Room is an entertaining psychological experiment that works greatest if you accurately learn your viewers of fellow gamers.
Mad Verse Metropolis
youtube
On a completely completely different a part of the spectrum is Mad Verse Metropolis, a sport about large, rap-battlin’ robots. This one is a special type of enjoyable, encouraging as much as eight gamers to jot down their very own diss tracks about another person within the room and see them carried out by a fifty-foot automaton. It is just a little like Mad Libs meets Transformers meets eight Mile, and the outcomes are sillier than even that description in all probability makes them sound.
Originally of each spherical, every participant is instructed to offer a sure kind of phrase, like a noun or verb. They’re then supplied with the primary line of a disrespectful rap track and are instructed to jot down the subsequent line nonetheless they need. You do not have to make it rhyme and even make sense, however the sport works loads higher if you do. That is repeated to make a four-line poem disparaging one of many different gamers, and as soon as everybody’s finished gamers can vote on who they suppose bought served the worst. You too can cheer or boo halfway by way of a rap in the event you thought a selected line was phat or wack.
Every participant is represented by a robotic who’s constructed out of a chunk of defunct know-how, and your avatar could be based mostly on a camcorder, Tamagotchi, or VHS tape. What’s extra, the entire robots have a novel voice supplied by an deliberately dangerous vocoder. It is fairly humorous listening to a passionless robotic voice spitting sizzling hearth at its adversary, although I discovered the humor of the gimmick wore off pretty rapidly. How a lot you get out of this one will largely rely upon how good your group is at tailoring their disses to their opponents throughout the time allotted.
There have been a few issues about this one that would have been dealt with higher. Mad Verse Metropolis requires a good variety of gamers since each rap battle pits two combatants towards each other. You probably have an odd variety of gamers, Gene the generic robotic fills in and raps as soon as throughout each spherical. I perceive that that is in all probability higher than some gamers having a bye spherical, however Gene’s raps are normally fairly dangerous, and for some purpose the pc participant will get to vote on the entire different face-offs.
One different criticism regards the hosts. For probably the most half, they do an excellent job of explaining the situation and pumping up the group, however they are often extraordinarily distracting, particularly after they begin speaking in the midst of the lyric writing section. It is exhausting sufficient to think about an excellent rhyme even with out somebody yakking in your ear, and through one session they have been speaking for a few third of the allotted time. Luckily, we found that we might add additional time to the writing section within the choices menu, a function meant for streaming however which I would suggest turning on for everybody. Even with out the prolonged timer, there’s a number of downtime for viewers members or early finishers, however they will amuse themselves by repeatedly clicking to assist the robots destroy the town in between rap battles.
Mad Verse Metropolis is probably not what your group is in search of, however I had a number of enjoyable with this one. Nonetheless, insulting different gamers is not for everybody. It is a extra situational sport, and is probably not acceptable if the gamers do not know each other very nicely.
Zeeple Dome
youtube
And now for one thing fully completely different. Zeeple Dome is the primary motion sport ever included in a Celebration Pack, and performs one thing like a simultaneous multiplayer model of Offended Birds. You may play this one by your self or add as much as 5 pals, working collectively to defeat waves of multicolored aliens.
Each participant controls a special coloured astronaut character and may fling them round the principle display by dragging their finger on their touchscreen, utilizing it type of like a catapult. Hitting the perimeters or prime of the world causes your character to rebound, and there are at all times a number of mounted obstacles in an enviornment to cope with that trigger the identical response. A number of varieties of aliens seem at random factors on the principle display, and the article is to clear them by crashing into all of them repeatedly to progress to the subsequent spherical. Sadly, the aliens cannot be defeated except their shade matches yours, they usually transfer round and counterattack in the event that they’re left alone for very lengthy.
When quite a lot of gamers are taking part, this one will get very chaotic in a short time, particularly since gamers can crash into each other midair and screw up each other’s trajectories. It appears to work greatest if you discuss issues out with different gamers, calling out aliens that match their shade and letting different gamers know if you’re about to fling your self at an enemy.
The audio on this one has some excessive factors and a few low ones. The announcer has just a little an excessive amount of reverb on his voice to be intelligible, and we could not actually perceive what he was saying throughout a majority of the sport. Then again, the gibberish-lyric music jogged my memory of a few of my favourite tracks from Splatoon, and the grunts and squeaks of the little earthlings could be fairly entertaining.
I loved this another than I believed I might, however we did run into some tech points throughout our second sport. One participant’s telephone stopped responding, and his avatar needed to stand there not doing something and absorbing enemy assaults. Gamers can resurrect each other by flying close to a departed buddy, however since aliens cannot be destroyed in the event that they’re the unsuitable shade, this participant was successfully useless weight. We additionally bumped into some points as a result of a few of the colours are very related, and a few the gamers had hassle distinguishing between the pink and purple avatars, in addition to the yellow and orange.
Patently Silly
youtube
Lastly, now we have this yr’s drawing sport. Patently Silly places three to eight gamers collectively in an invention seminar, and the thought is to create a foolish invention to resolve a ridiculous drawback. Every participant is given a pair of fill-in-the-blank prompts describing an uncommon drawback which will probably be given to a different participant. That participant has to determine which drawback to resolve, then design and draw a product meant to repair the difficulty.
That is not all although, since you nonetheless want to provide this product a reputation and a tagline to assist it promote. As soon as all that is finished you possibly can select to current your invention to the remainder of the room, or let the hosts do the heavy lifting for you. As soon as everybody has made their pitches, the ultimate spherical begins, the place every participant votes for his or her favourite innovations. Votes carry a financial bonus, and the aim of this spherical is to realize a funding goal which can enable your invention to enter manufacturing.
If that feels like a number of steps, that is as a result of it’s. It is type of enjoyable, and the tacky hosts do their greatest to raise the fabric, however there’s not likely something right here to suggest over earlier Celebration Pack drawing video games like Drawful 2 or the gold customary, Tee Ok. O.
There have been a few different issues that maintain me from giving Patently Silly a full suggestion. I feel it is just a little too straightforward to ice different gamers by deliberately offering horrible prompts at the start, and I wasn’t thrilled to see Gene the generic man make one other look. I would like to provide this each other shot with one other group of gamers to see if it would work higher underneath completely different circumstances, however for now, I feel we’ll in all probability be sticking with a few of the different video games within the pack over this one.
youtube
To summarize, I believed Cut up the Room and You Do not Know Jack: Full Stream have been well worth the worth of admission all on their very own, and Mad Verse Metropolis and Zeeple Dome also can present a considerable quantity of leisure worth. I would like to provide it one other probability, however my first impressions of Patently Silly weren’t as encouraging.
It is not fairly pretty much as good a package deal as my favourite Jackbox Celebration Pack, however in my view, Celebration Pack 5 is a lot better than final yr’s providing. Not one of the video games appear to be right here simply to fill out the pack. When you’re in search of one thing to do with a gaggle over the upcoming holidays, there’s lots in Celebration Pack 5 to maintain a complete bunch of individuals engaged and laughing for hours.

Hi, I’m Nic Scozzaro, and I’ve been working on a website that is the “Duolingo” of Physics — that is, a web app where you can learn physics interactively for free PhysicsIsBeautiful.com. I’m posting because I’d really appreciate your perspective, guidance, suggestions, or help to take this startup/project to the next phase.Personal background: I first found myself interested in physics during high school and went on to get a B.A. in physics at UC Berkeley and finally a PhD in physics at The Ohio State University. Along this journey I found myself at times trying desperately to learn, but not learning efficiently, leaving me feeling frustrated. In college I slowly “learned how to learn,” and I realized that I learn best hands-on… doing lots of problems and working my way through them progressively - first tackling easier concepts and building my knowledge base so that I could move on to tackle more difficult problems. I also learned that a lot of physics problems are a “game” in which you have a small set of tools and it’s your job to figure out which tools to use and how and when to apply them.I also have a big interest in tech and internet companies. I think it’s amazing that you can build something that people all over the world can use, and in my last year of grad school I decided that I wanted to build something that combined my interests. I bought the domain physicsisbeautiful.com, found two fellow grad students to join on the project, and in December 2016 got to coding.Project background: With two fellow grad students, we quickly built out the site and wrote content. We showed a professor a demo and decided to implement it as part of the summer intro physics course at OSU. With that deadline we worked our asses off (when we weren’t doing research), and had the site ready by summer 2017. The site worked without a hitch, the students liked the site, and through a pretest and posttest we saw that the students went from getting on average 8/20 questions correct to getting 12/20 correct. Not great improvement by number, but as a percentage that’s 50% more correct answers which isn’t bad. We told this story at a pitch night and won a grant for $2k from OSU, which we used to build the site that we have today. I subsequently spent $2.5k of my personal money paying for more coding (Upwork) and web hosting, as I now have a full time job and less time to code (plus I’ve now seen what professional web coders can do and they’re better than I am).I posted on /r/physics about 8 months ago, and someone the next day reposted with a better title "Duolingo" for Physics: Learn Physics interactively which got nearly 594 upvotes. This led to a spike in traffic and ~20k page views in a few days according to google analytics; screenshot here. However, the traffic fell back down within a few days. I now have about 10k monthly page views on average, it has been flat for months, and most of that traffic is just going to one of my “blog” pages that has solutions to a quantum mechanics textbook. Also, I should note that since graduating at the end of 2016, I am pretty much working on this website alone.Where I need help, guidance: I want to grow this project, and I know I can’t continue to work on this project alone — I believe startups are a team sport. The product at it’s core is very similar to Duolingo — it’s an interactive quiz web app (don’t have a mobile app yet), with an array of problem types: 1. multiple choice image/text 2. multiselect image/text 3. free-response math 4. Draw vectors 5. Unit conversion 6. Game versions of (5) and (6)I’m most proud of the custom problem types that we’ve built: the draw vector, unit conversion, and game versions. You can see these in the first two modules on the site. I honestly believe there’s no other website that teaches unit conversion and vectors as interactively and fun while still being educational. The other problem types — multiple choice/multiselect — are more standard.The ideas that I’m juggling between are:A. Keep going with the physics app: build out native app versions of the current physics app, and try to grow the audience that way. Dream: become the top physics education app. Do for physics what Duolingo did for learning language.B. Rework the site to be more general and like Quizlet — build out functionality so that users can build their own lessons for their students. Dream: millions of people build out tons of quizzes/content.C. Variation of (B): Strengthen the project as as an open source platform that is the “wikipedia of lessons” or “GitHub of lessons”. The code is currently open source, github.com/nscozzaro/physics-is-beautiful/, but I could invest in making it a really user-friendly code base that people can set up and modify for their own needs. Then, instead of being content that just one person builds, they could be collaborative lessons, either that the community moderates (like Wikipedia), or there could be a more Github-like approach in which people can fork, or make “pull requests” for suggested changes to a curriculum that a person or group of people moderate. Dream: build a vibrant community of people collaborating on building lessons.D. Stick to what is drawing most of the traffic to the site right now: physics solutions. Build out this content. I would start with things like making Physics GRE solutions much better and more user friendly. Dream: I’m not very excited about this route, but it’s the “stick to what you’re good at” route.Thank you for your time reading through this post! And if any of these ideas or this project excites you feel free to private message me! :) I look forward to it.

Don’t Give Away Historic Details About Yourself
Social media sites are littered with seemingly innocuous little quizzes, games and surveys urging people to reminisce about specific topics, such as “What was your first job,” or “What was your first car?” The problem with participating in these informal surveys is that in doing so you may be inadvertently giving away the answers to “secret questions” that can be used to unlock access to a host of your online identities and accounts.
I’m willing to bet that a good percentage of regular readers here would never respond — honestly or otherwise — to such questionnaires (except perhaps to chide others for responding). But I thought it was worth mentioning because certain social networks — particularly Facebook — seem positively overrun with these data-harvesting schemes. What’s more, I’m constantly asking friends and family members to stop participating in these quizzes and to stop urging their contacts to do the same.
On the surface, these simple questions may be little more than an attempt at online engagement by otherwise well-meaning companies and individuals. Nevertheless, your answers to these questions may live in perpetuity online, giving identity thieves and scammers ample ammunition to start gaining backdoor access to your various online accounts.
Consider, for example, the following quiz posted to Facebook by San Benito Tire Pros, a tire and auto repair shop in California. It asks Facebook users, “What car did you learn to drive stick shift on?”
I hope this is painfully obvious, but for many people the answer will be the same as to the question, “What was the make and model of your first car?”, which is one of several “secret questions” most commonly used by banks and other companies to let customers reset their passwords or gain access to the account without knowing the password.
This simple one-question quiz has been shared more than 250 times on Facebook since it was posted a week ago. Thousands of Facebook users responded in earnest, and in so doing linked their profile to the answer.
Probably the most well-known and common secret question, “what was the name of your first pet,” comes up in a number of Facebook quizzes that, incredibly, thousands of people answer willingly and (apparently) truthfully. When I saw this one I was reminded of this hilarious 2007 Daily Show interview wherein Jon Stewart has Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on and tries to slyly ask him the name of his first pet.
Almost 5,000 Facebook users answered this common password reset secret question.
Womenworking.com asked a variation on this same question of their huge Facebook following and received an impressive number of responses:
Here’s a great one from springchicken.co.uk, an e-commerce site in the United Kingdom. It asks users to publicly state the answer to yet another common secret question: “What street did you grow up on?”
More than 500 Facebook users have shared this quiz with their network, and hundreds more shared the answer using their real names and links to their profiles.
This question, from the Facebook account of Rving.how — a site for owners of recreational vehicles — asks: “What was your first job?” How the answer to this question might possibly relate to RV camping is beyond me, but that didn’t stop people from responding.
The question, “What was your high school mascot” is another common secret question, and yet you can find this one floating around lots of Facebook profiles:
Among the most common secret questions is, “Where did you meet your spouse or partner?” Loads of people like to share this information online as well, it seems:
This common secret question has been shared on Facebook almost 10,000 times and has garnered more than 2,300 responses.
Here’s another gem from the Womenworking Facebook page. Who hasn’t had to use the next secret question at some point? Answering this truthfully — in a Facebook quiz or on your profile somewhere — is a bad idea.
Incredibly, 6,800 Facebook users answered this question.
Do you remember your first grade teacher’s name? Don’t worry, if you forget it after answering this question, Facebook will remember it for you:
I’ve never seen a “what was the first concert you ever saw” secret question, but it is unique as secret questions go and I wouldn’t be surprised if some companies use this one. “What is your favorite band?” is definitely a common secret question, however:
Giving away information about yourself, your likes and preferences, etc., can lead to all kinds of unexpected consequences. This practice may even help turn the tide of elections. Just take the ongoing scandal involving Cambridge Analytica, which reportedly collected data on more than 50 million Facebook users without their consent and then used this information to build behavioral models to target potential voters in various political campaigns.
I hope readers don’t interpret this story as KrebsOnSecurity endorsing secret questions as a valid form of authentication. In fact, I have railed against this practice for years, precisely because the answers often are so easily found using online services and social media profiles.
But if you must patronize a company or service that forces you to select secret questions, I think it’s a really good idea not to answer them truthfully. Just make sure you have a method for remembering your phony answer, in case you forget the lie somewhere down the road.
Many thanks to RonM for assistance with this post.

All answers that were given in this questionnaire were anonymous
I have recently done a survey on what sprites my target audience liked, what enemies people would fight and how my game looks overall. This helps me decide if I put in new monsters, more monsters and or change the general look of my game where players will experience it with unusual colours, texture and overall new background. It also allows me to get an audience’s opinion upon my game making me be more available to change things to the consumers liking. This is important because this depends if people would buy my game or look over it. This will also create a sense of interactivity with the maker of the game and the consumer meaning they know that I listen to what they say. This starts to create a small community, thus creating a fanbase.
I also got some feedback in the comments, this told me why people choose what they picked this helps me to come to terms why they did not like certain parts of the sprites or enemies. I certainly got a lot of knowledge regarding what people like to see and dislike to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My first Question was about which of the variation of the “Mushmen” they liked. The Mushmen are people that have the shape of a mushroom but have corrupt human souls stuck in them. I did 2 variants of them for a choice as I didn’t know If I should go for more of a traditional look such as the normal mushroom cap you see on the Left, or more of a distinct “afro” look which could make them seem a bit more humanoid.
I asked the quiz part takers “Which one of the Mushmen do you like the better, right or left? Or do you like both of them? (Image)”. Looking at the statistics it’s obvious that the left Mushmen won. This is interesting because this meant a lot more people liked a “traditional” style of art rather than exploring a character this is also supported by the statistics. A whopping 56% picked the right one looked better and only 24% said the left looked better, but the most surprising was % was that people didn’t like both. This was surprising as I thought people would enjoy seeing both the Mushmen in the game to give the Gameplay some spice, some new monsters to battle more than just one and maybe them having different attacks in a battle. This certainly creates a vision about my game, where I should go with it and how many enemy variants I should add.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The people that kindly responded gave me to vast knowledge and intel on why they liked that certain sprite. Some people responded to the left one that it was “clear” meaning they could easily identify what the creature is meant to be. This is interesting because they had exactly the same body, same colours used and the same shape, other than their hair/cap they have on. This meant that the right’s Mushmen confused people ad made it unclear to what the creature was. Another comment people gave was that “both of them were unique in a that appeals to what the personality they might have” this is great because if I were to add both of them, or maybe a changed version of them, I can make them have a different personality by having different attacks. A comment someone said about the right one was “I prefer the one on the right because it reminds me of toad from Mario” this is good because it means people would be familiar with this character however I would have to make him friendly and not an enemy, this would contradict the whole point of asking people because I was going to use this as an enemy. People also said or implied by saying the left one is clearer that the right sprite is hard to make out what it is saying that many don’t familiarize themselves with toad when seeing that sprite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Question 2 was about if a Giant Bunny could be an enemy, I made a normal looking bunny, a big too big by mistake, originally it was going to be a natural monster that would have a 25% chance of dropping XP and another 25% to drop a bunny leg to gain HP back. This was later not possible as I realized that I made the sprite too big, it being twice the size of the player. This is when I came up with an idea of it being a normal enemy that could crush the player once near it. This led to the bunny being a harder monster to kill, like a “level 2” monster.
The question was “Do you think a Giant Bunny would be classed as a monster? (image2)” I thought the answers this question was rather interesting, as 25 people answered the question, there couldn’t be an even split. But as I saw the question was head to head with “No, it couldn’t be classed as a Monster” only winning by one 1 vote. This is interesting as if I would’ve had it kept going or ended on an even number such as 30 the results show that it could’ve been a tie. Another reason why this is so interesting is that many people see nothing wrong with a Giant Bunny as an enemy. This got me to think as it’s basically a 50/50 split, I would look at the comments and see what they have to say negatively about the bunny and improve the bunny and update it. Furthermore, this supports me having an enemy bunny on my team, even if many people say it cannot be an enemy, many do say it can be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The comments were also quite supportive of having a bunny as an enemy but that I would have to make changes to the sprite, this comes to no surprise to me as not many people have Giant Bunnies as enemies making it unique to my game. The people that commented and supported my theory of it looking “too nice” answered in such ways “looks too friendly”, “it could work as a monster even better if it looked demonic and evil” and “if its design was perhaps more menacing and scary”. These all support my theory meaning if I change some of the sprites I will perhaps be able to use it.  Also I found out people were rather confused with how big a Giant Bunny actually is, I found this out due to comments like “Rabbits are not dangerous to humans, but I suppose it is a giant rabbit it could be depends how big the rabbit is.” This tells me that the image wasn’t specific enough and I cannot blame the audience for not knowing has I did not have a scale or compassing for it meaning it was just the sprite with a blank background. This is my fault for not making it more specific. I will try and do this next time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third question, was more of an important one in my opinion, it asked what the player thought about the main character. This is important because if the player can’t connect with main character they will most likely have an inconvenient time playing the game as he is the character you play as. This also forces a character onto the players that they don’t understand or don’t want anything to do with them making them quit the game early before even finishing it. This hypothesis is supported by modern games who now normally build a narrative around a character you make yourself. However, this character normally does not speak or have any voice acting at all, but some games go that extra mile and make the game have voices to pick from and allow you to pick certain dialogue option which will have voice acting such as in Mass Effect: Andromeda. Furthermore, many games have diverse types of characters and try to stay away from exploring the main character’s voice and speaking patterns, in an RPG you want to feel free and not shackled to a character you don’t like. Another reason why creators normally stay away from the main character’s dialogue options is they try to make the character’s personality something that is set, however when most people play the game they try to get immersed and want to put their own voice in the main character making them feel more immersed. On the other hand, this can also be a positive matter that can make the game better, as seen in games like Dragon Age Inquisition and The Walking Dead: A Tell-Tale series.
The question was “Do you like the way the main character looks? (image 3)” I gave the participants three options, this is so they can decide how much they like him and doesn’t force them into a corner of having to like him or dislike him, I also gave them the option to be in-between about the character. I didn’t give any background story or of the character, this makes it so the participants were purely checked on the character’s design. The character resembles and old man and is in the style of a Titan Souls character, making it familiar with people who have played the game. This was a choice I went with as the games ratings were high and the player couldn’t choose anything about the character, it was also a huge game that warranted a release on PS4 after its successful release on pc. I did try to make my sprite so it doesn’t inflict with copyright issues meaning I only took inspiration from the Titan souls sprite. (I speak more about this in my Titan Soul’s post).
More than 50% of people said they like the way he looks and 40% said he looked okay, which means that only 8% of the people that answered disliked the character. This is a good response as though I might need to make some tweaks on the character, I am happy with the response as most people either didn’t mind him too much or liked him and his design. I personally found this useful and educational as It gave me insight on where I should put efforts into the game. As the character being fine I can focus more on bigger problems such as designing the next room, and  adding new items such as swords.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The comments supported my character and said he was “badass” looking with his beard and looked like a “commando” this is good because he is an expert swordsman and an adept fire Essence wielder.  The design also got complemented and was called “good” and “decent”, others also said they “likey” the design. This reassures me with my previous statement to what I said that I can take my focus of the main character and put it to use somewhere else. However, with all these good things being said some people had some issues with him such as “Does not represent how a main character should look” and “the white eyes are weird some people even implied he didn’t look charming enough. “I believe the majority of the people relate well with the character if the character is a charming looking person, even if the player isn’t charming themselves.” This is implying that the character isn’t too good looking and rather not groomed, however I went for this look and this is how I wanted the character to look because this gives him the grittiness of being a survivor and living in the woods for years without anyone else. Going back to the comment that said he does not look like a main character, this breaks the stereotype of every character having to look a certain way and making them “handsome”. A main character is one that relates to the consumer but he also has his own unique aspects that make him different and make them be the main character in the first place. Not following a regular stereotypical character can be also be good, this is shown by “The Hunger Games” where the main “Hero” is a Female, this is different because most films are seen to have a man as a hero and a woman “The Damsel in distress” needing saving by a male hero. However, in Hunger Games the main “Hero” is a Female that saves her partner making the male “The Damsel in destress”. This appeals to the audience more because most films have a male hero and this changes the series. Another example of why having a “weird” and none stereotypical handsome hero is Tokyo Ghoul, Tokyo Ghoul is an animated TV series. The main character is called Kaneki-Ken and is human, the character is quickly met with an unfortunate fate which turns him into a rare half Ghoul. He is an odd character because he is socially awkward and doesn’t follow a heroic trait, he also doesn’t plan on following his new-found power which many heroes normally do in story but rather tries to repress it, this makes him venerable to the evil around him and he soon to be found to be a damsel in distress and his female companion must try to safe him. In the end, he embraces the new-found power and doesn’t need saving, however the time where he needs saving and doesn’t is the time that most heroes don’t have making this character unique.
The next question was again one about my enemies, this time asking people if they think slimes are too “generic” I asked this to see if they would like more generic RPG monsters and wouldn’t mind if it was, or if they wanted more creative things such as maybe a 2-leg wild creature that shoots magic out of it face. This is an important question to ask because then I know what enemies to create when it comes to creating them. I also wanted to know if the slime model looks good enough to be classed as a slime. (A tutorial guide gave me the model and said I could use it, however I changed somethings.). I liked the model and the concept of a slime being the lowest level monster in my game, it made sense for a retro RPG game to have a slime as monster but I wanted to ask my audience to know exactly what they wanted.
I wasn’t really expecting too many of my primary audience to say they are way too generic and wouldn’t like it. Maybe around 20%, I believe this because in an RPG there are always generic monsters like spiders or the Iconic goblin that would be seen in the preliminary stages of an RPG. I also think that most people don’t care about what they kill in games if it has a purpose and gives them a sense of reward. I would be surprised if more than 20% of people would care and I would probably question it and look at the comments to try to figure out why they would care so much to make slimes more “exciting”.
The results for question 4 “Do you think slimes make a good enemy? Or are they too “generic” and uncreative? (image 4)” was like I said it was going to be, It was 25% answered that they didn’t want like the fact that slimes are in the game and thought they were too generic, 25% is close to 20% so I wasn’t too far off the actual results. 75% of people either liked the idea or didn’t care as killing monsters in games is fun for them. Making the slime good for use. I knew my target audience would enjoy this concept as the retro feel it would have.
The comments also backed up my concept of including slimes, although some people said that the particular sprite I used looked like “poo” which is due to its colour of brown I tried to make it look like a muddy slime, which kind of worked. Other people said, “just know that they’ll die anyways” which is shows that the quiz participant doesn’t care as long as it dies which is good and backs up my theory once again. Another quote that backs it up is “final fantasy definitely reminds me of slimes and they are fun to battle” this suggests that players will actually enjoy farming their levels with these monsters. Lastly this one quote suggests that its uncreative because of the “it’s only a slime” which makes it sound lacklustre and boring. However, majority of the votes say they do not care meaning I will just try and ignore these types of comments.
The last and final question is about the style of the game, I personally think this is the most important question due to this being part of the whole game not just 1 section of it. I am assuming most of my target audience will answer yes it looks good and it’s alright looking because its aimed at a retro style audience therefore the style is retro meaning thy should enjoy the look of it. I also think that many people will support the look, but will also have somethings to shame about the game. Which is good because I do want constructive criticism to make the game look better for the consumer as the game is for them, not me.
I was write 92% of people thought the game was either good looking or alright looking meaning only 8 of my audience don’t like it making it perfect for my audience. Looking at the comments the main complaint was that it was too zoomed out but it was that zoomed out too show off the environment and area of the game to show them what it will roughly look like when the game releases. However, people loved the way the game looked and it is supported with comments like  “OH THIS BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF THE OLD GAMEBOY I USED TO PLAY, I LOVE IT :D” this means it reminds them of retro games and that the style stayed true to the original retro games style. Another comment was complementing the “good platform gaming” in the game saying that the design and mechanics of the whole game looks good.
Overall this survey helped me identify a lot of flaws in my game and make them a lot easier to use find. Asking people from my community directly is good because I get their straight facts and opinions about what was good and what was bad I like this because it helps me grow as a developer and gives me experience in this type of game like do’s and not to do’s. I have identified certain flaws I will change in my game such as changing the colour of the giant bunny, making him look evil. I also like the honesty that I was given like If people didn’t like the main character they told me why, I can see why they wouldn’t relate to the main character so I will try to come up with a story for him that will try to make it possible for the character to be relatable. I also fin the data about the enemies important because this shows that I can use more generic RPG monsters and not have to find more complex monsters that no one will be able to know what they’re. This was a good experience for me and really helped me in my production of my game in the early stages.
