What are your thoughts on post-STR Hiyori and Haruka?

this rather became a hiyori post but hehe. under the cut

i think theyre such an interesting duo because they're considered and welcomed as members of the mekakushi dan, but they both kind of arrive late.

these 2 and ayano are the ones who spent recent time inside the daze but ayano has her whole family and i think hiyori particularly feels. weird about ayano. because they're related.

THE THING ABT HIYORI or how i interpret her at least, she's conflicted about her family because. lol she had this secret sister her parents never told her about?? she suddenly finds out she has nieces and nephews?? she runs away to the city without them knowing?? what are ayaka and hiyori's parents like to cause this reaction on both their daughters...

ok im getting a bit off topic, this isn't a hiyori analysis BUT i say this to justify hiyori being a little weird with ayano+mekatrio. i think ayano especially would try ridiculously hard to have a relationship with hiyori... she's delighted about having MORE family, especially from her mom's side since it's always been like. a secret. ayano approaches her with the big sister mindset of course

but since she doesn't KNOW hiyori, she fumbles spectacularly. ayano's overexcited approach isn't well received by hiyori's conflicted feelings about not only the tateyamas but also everything that's happened to her. idk i think it would irk hiyori that ayano just ASSUMES they're gonna get along and be best friends. i think generally, post str hiyori is more of her serious side and not so much the cheerful act anymore. i think it's there for when she's taking it easy especially around momo for example. but otherwise...hiyori's rly serious i think

ON THE OTHER HAND, there's hibiya and momo. i think thats who hiyori is the closest to/normalest to in the dan, BUT THE THING IS... hibiya and momo are already closer to each other than they are to her. ofc we can argue it with hibiya, ive always and will always choose to interpret hibiya and hiyori as childhood friends so hibiya is in fact this person she's relied on and been with for her whole life!! and they most definitely deal with separation anxiety post str lmao and share a unique bond

BUT in the trio that forms with hibiya hiyori and momo, hiyori can tell they're close. hiyori is jealous by both sides because wtf that's KISARAGI MOMO and she's my best friend :3 but she's bester friends with HIBIYA?!?!? WTF IM HER BIGGEST FAN THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. bur also... hibiya is MY best friend not HER best friend. so its double jealousy LOL nowadays hibiya finds comfort in momo rather than on her bc he doesn't wanna trouble her, he's always been the crybaby of the two and hiyori's always had to pick him up... anyways she enjoys her time with them but DOES harbor some jealousy and feeling like an outcast

ANYWAYS that's where I'd start talking about haruka. ok kind of. im still talking about hibiya and hiyori. i think hibiya and hiyori feel completely different about the konoha situation... i honestly see it being in all sorts of ways, them accepting it or them being against haruka, both having the same opinion or different, etc. BUT PERSONALLY i like the idea that hibiya is completely and utterly against haruka's existence and thinks it's unfair konoha had to go. while hiyori is more understanding and defends haruka. i think it's a huge point of division for hibiya and hiyori... not to the point of causing a fallout or anything but it's a thing they know are in disagreement about.

i think it comes from different coping methods and the different circumstances they were in. like... hibiya's more with the urgency/denial and rly acts his age about it. like with him being convinced hiyori IS SOMEWHERE and HAS TO BE FOUND AND SAVED but he also learns to let go and be open with momo. coming back to childhood friends hibihiyo i think hibiya wears his heart in his sleeve with hiyori, while hiyori acts like nothing is wrong and never opens up and would immediately assume killing is the immediate solution to someone seeing her cry. i like to think hiyori's so rough with hibiya because, and these are purely headcanons: 1. he was the one person to treat her normally and not like a princess, then stopped when he develops a crush on her 2. he is the only person who's seen her cry. so she's like AUGHHH

anyways back to the konoha thing, hibiya's really mourning him (everyone is, but hibiya is kind of an ass about it) while hiyori looks at it from a different perspective. she's like, konoha is why i'm alive he wouldn't want me to be angry. also that's ridiculous and furrowing my brow would give me wrinkles 🙄 and she knows haruka was in the daze too so she's like. i was in there too i know what it's like not to be chosen and be left behind, it's cruel and unfair. and she feels for him. quick sidetrack about whether or not the daze ppl can meet each other... apparently they can but MY PERSONAL hc is everyone can do that EXCEPT haruka because of his link to the outside world, or like ppl can come see him but he can't really go to other dazes bc he HAS to be looking through his own eyes outside at the same time so he cannot leave his own daze. as soon as saeru takes over his body and he can't see outside anymore his daze is open that's why he gets to interact with shintaro&ayano when they come get him. ANYWAYSSS i speak from a hc where hiyori and haruka never meet inside the daze but are aware of each other's circumstances. if they did meet inside the daze it just adds to hiyori having so much empathy for haruka but yeah personally i like the idea haruka was just alone for the 2(+hibihiyo timeloop he had to watch) years. its more tragic like that (gets booed)

bc of this hiyori does hear haruka out while hibiya doesnt give him A CHANCE. like really for hibiya it's just that he needs more time to understand and he just. he needs to be angry for a bit. because he's a middle schooler and being mad at everything and the world is kinda how it goes so of course hibiya needs a damn minute

from haruka's perspective he is also super attached to hibiya and hiyori. we rly don't talk enough about how haruka's access to view what konoha did means he spent a lot of one sided time with hibiya & hiyori. he's 100% attached to them!! same with the whole dan and the one sided friendship thing "omg theyre gonna want konoha not me" thing i always talk about❤️ but with hibiya and hiyori it's even more concrete because not only is he attached but!! he rly feels like he owes it to konoha to maintain a bond!! konoha is most likely the one in the passenger seat now, seeing through him... haruka is sure he wants to see hibiya and hiyori!!!

so hiyori does hear him out and find out he saw everything, even the kagerou days timeloop and idk....i think they'd bond over the konoha situation, being unchosen by the daze, joining the dan last, having people inside the dan they're very close to yet these people ARE close to the rest so they feel like outcasts... hiyori hates to (and wont) admit that she finds a kinship similar of momo and hibiya's, with haruka !! sniff sniff...they are. best friends.

i think when hibiya and hiyori visit they stay at shintaro and momo's place. hiyori is in the middle of the sibling dynamic of shintaro momo and hibiya and tbh SHES ALSO A PART OF THIS. SHE VERY EASILY FITS INTO THIS SIBLING BANTER they all act like siblings not to mention mrs kisaragi probably adopts the hell out of them so its like.literally family times. but hiyori will NEVER admit that bc 1. girl thats a lot 2. she kinda likes being dramatic. again middle schoolers be like fuck the world.. idk was that just me. i feel like hating the world when ur 13 is a pretty universal experience but maybe im wrong. anyways its a difficult age even when ur not in a timeloop so hiyoris going thru it

anyways thats to say she gets out to go see haruka a lot. so she goes to harutaka apartment and theyre ALWAYS home bc they work from home so she's like hi. im here to see ur cat. ( <- pretty true but also wants to hang out with haruka) and haruka's like :3 ok come in. and they eat and chat and HANG OUT AND THEYRE BEST FRIENDS. and hiyori even just stays there watching tv while haruka works. sometimes she wants to sleep over but is too embarrassed to ask. takane is also there❤️ ig bc of this a bond would form between them too but we arent talking abt that. but i do think hiyori's a little iffy with takane for being haruka's partner. not in the HE'S MINE way. i just think since hiyori and haruka are so close she's protective and she's like u break his heart i break ur legs😐<- from a 12 year old girl. takane would laugh but knows it comes from loving haruka which happens to be takane's expertise so she can respect the enthusiasm. but from hanging out there/finding out their backstory hiyori probably grows to like takane. but again she loves being dramatic so she still insists to be indifferent towards her. but also keeps urging them to get married. not cuz she cares abt them getting married but she wants to go to a wedding. loses all interest when they tell her they wouldn't care to have a wedding

AND A QUICK acknowledgment of hiyori having a crush on konoha. first of all i think it's funny as hell bc konoha is weird as fuck and she's like omg...so dreamy... but also it's that she thinks he's really cute, its not REALLY a crush. my friends in hs following the seniors they thought were cute kinda vibes. turning red movie when the girls all are obsessed with the guy working at the grocery store. jandkejfjejd it's just sweet and funny and since it's about his looks yeah it'd translate to haruka post str but yknow after everything that happened i dont think hiyori would be delusional abt crushing on him?? if it still happened though id think its funny. i think ayano would weaponise haruka to try to hang out with hiyori

As epic as the hockey was last night - and it WAS lol especially the last period, jeff and i were on the edge of our seats. The best part though was a realization i had about this world im trying to break into.

See, my friend "paul" told me something before he left the city (and then got a new job in Japan a month later and im so jealous, he left me here all alone and sad and now he's off having even cooler adventures) - he said that the only way he got his promotion at his old company was by befriending his boss and going out for drinks after work. Which floored me.

And then thinking about the sculptor at l*ght box who blatantly and without shame announced in his presentation that every job he got, he got through friends that he would go out with to build relationships.

And then listening to the Legend talk about back in the day how the more experienced animators used to take him out to lunch when he was still 18, 19 and get him drunk as kind of a hazing ritual. And while the Legend's stories about being so tipsy he had to crawl back to his desk and then try to sit up and draw were absolutely hilarious, the stories made me despair because in an environment like that im not going to cut it.

My closest friends dont care that i dont drink - they've seen me dance, they know that i can act plenty dumb without a drop of alcohol. But people who don't know me well tend to project their own insecurities about alcohol onto me - if they feel guilt over maybe drinking too much they are going to hate me for my seeming judgement of them. (meanwhile im like man, i had to learn to deal with my drunken mother at the age of 14 who honestly was better when she was drunk because it was when she was sober that she was mean. Dealing with drunken friends who giggle a lot, throw up a little, come find me for help because theyre so high theyve lost their shoes and walked two blocks barefoot, and friends who sometimes need to be coaxed into a shopping cart to wheel them back to the car is easy by comparison, i am having fun, this is endlessly entertaining, im saving up fun story fodder for decades to come, no judgement, trust me)

Anyway, i have spent the past two months utterly despairing over the fact that i will never be the type of person who can 'network' properly, and i will never be able to form those 'genuine' bonds that make people want to find you a job.

BUT but. As i was sitting there during intermissions chatting with jeff (who is essentially my boss if it wasnt a 'volunteer' gig lol) and finding out about when he used to coach college soccer and even won a national title, and chatting about the museum and the next couple of months agenda, and chatting about upcoming events we've both been invited to. And i was like holy shit. This is it. Im networking properly \o/ and not a drop of alcohol required, AND its genuinely just two friends hanging out.

anyway, tldr, people who have already found success are gonna try to tell you that there's only one way to do things, and that if you aren't doing it right you need to change what you are doing and maybe your entire personality and do it correctly. Listen to them with a smile, agree with them, and then go do it your own way anyway. Even if its a little slower and less glamerous

i cant HATE hanzo because i dont think that he meant to do what he did but his whole fight with gon was just a HORRIBLE lesson to gon. he 1000% internalised everything that happened theres just no way that he didnt. being told over and over again that he cant win, that he needs to give up, and having countless adults just stand around and not say or do anything. like i know i know its part of the exam it HAS to test his mental skill but its fucking cruel the only person helping him or showing that they care is leorio, killua, and kurapika. everyone else is literally turning their heads from him. hes getting told that theres no way he could win as hes fucking bleeding and all of his senses are fucked up. he cant see, he cant hear out of one ear, he cant get up, he has a broken arm, his nose just got busted and he still tries to fight, he doesnt give up, and he tells leorio that hes fine. its nothing he cant handle.

hes screaming out in pain and no one is doing anything. they might stare in shock or they might show that they litearlly cant stand to watch gon but gon litearlly cant SEE. gon is stubborn to all hell and he wont give up.

the fight does a couple of things.

by eventually winning, it teaches him that he can keep going. he can have absolutely no strength in his body and he still will force himself to try and recover and try to fight. i could see gon exhausting himself to death because of this mindset. he will force himself over and over and he refuses to give up no matter what and he will only ever use his own strength and try to win. he goes through the thought that hanzo wouldnt cut off his legs because that would make him bleed out-- he doesnt think about how horrific it would be to have his legs cut off, its not like he doesnt take it seriously, but he doesnt take his own life seriously. he doesnt CARE. he would rather die than not be a hunter.

people praise him when he does well in the fight, and that teaches him that all he has to do is keep going. all he has to do is do good and he will be fine. all he has to do is keep getting back up and people will love him and he'll be admired. and all of this because of his dad, because he wants to find his dad, and i think the fight also teaches him that his father would eventually praise him for all of his efforts.

by hanzo still being nice, and not actually wanting to kill gon, pleading with him over and over again that hes not going to quit, that gon is going to die if he continues... and then hanzo pussing out and not doing it like that plants the idea in his head that the "bad guys" or the people that he has to fight ARENT that bad, i believe. this ones a hunch. i think that this will put it in gons head that eventually he will come out on top because his opponents cant be the worst people inside of their hearts, that they wouldnt kill him. you can bring up that gon refuses to take an easy win, that gon NEEDS to have a fair fight, but that doesnt really change anything. subconsciously, i think gon has a bit of an overconfidence that he cannot die. hisoka didnt kill him, hanzo didnt kill him, genthru didnt kill him, whatever and whoever didnt kill him. he wont die. i think that if gon ever accepted that he COULD die, like truly let it set in, then he would lose part of himself. i think gon refuses to truly have it in his head that he COULD die because i think that would admit defeat. i know that gon knows he can die, but his mortality and his own life is not serious to him because thats not a concern to him. his concern is his father and his friends.

by his friends being the only ones to outwardly show support, by being the ones who would scream out and tell him to quit, by him hearing them and knowing in his heart theyre barely holding themselves back to save him, their bond grows. i dont want to say thats unfortunate... but its kind of unfortunate. i dont want their bond and friendship to grow over feelings of pain and anguish, but thats what happens. he hears their cries and i know he internalises it as strength for him to keep going. the desperation that his friend show him only makes him be committed to them more. gon doesnt need verbal support, he barely needs people to tell him they like him. after all killua is his closest friend not because killua says nice things to gon and tells him sweet things or anything like that-- he and killua are best friends because of their actions. killua is committed to gon. gon knows that. he trusts killua because of that. gon sees the things his friends do for him, and it makes him want to match those exact things as well.

hanzos age is also a small thing, but a big thing at the same time. hanzo does mention his age to gon as a side note, but gon brings it up as a main point. he talks about how hanzo is only six years older than him. he doesnt keep going with that point, but i think his brain does do something with it. gon ends up putting that as motivation, i know he wants to match hanzos strength. he probably wants to be better than hanzo, stronger and more skilled. if gon got to hanzos age and was weaker than him i think he would hate himself for it. gon has unreasonably high expectations of himself, and age matters to him in the way that he needs to be stronger than everyone else. yes, to make his father proud and to thank him, but i know its also so he can protect his friends and family as well.

even what killua eventually eventually does, just that small thing of drawing hanzos face on the ground and saying that gon is nowhere near his strength... thats just basically forcing gon to compare himself to hanzo (something i know killua didnt mean as a bad thing). hanzo isnt the biggest threat that gon has ever had to deal with; i dont think that he has made THE absolute most impact, but i HAVE to think about it in this sense: gons spirit is...strong. but hisoka wounds it when he gives him an "easy win" and passes gon his badge. this makes gon deal with a bunch of self worth issues for a few days straight... and then hanzo goes and does all of that to him. had it been separate from everything that hisoka did i think that it mightve not hurt as much, but all of the stress i know went to his head. the end of the hunter exams were some of the most impactful yet painful events for gon, at least thats what seems to show once you looka t the behaviour that follows. i cant hate hanzo because i know he didnt mean to make gon develop the way he did. but i think hanzos fight did horrible damage to the way gon thinks.

New chapter new analysis

I’m publishing it one more time because it didnt show in tags for some reason???

I put it under “read more” so maybe now.

I finally read translation so I can finally write something about the new chapter. I know people’s strong feelings towards it and I think it’s totally understandable huh

I, personally, liked this chapter even if I think it was creepy as fuck. But I know Jun’s work and how she writes her stories and I know that she purposely made it really uncomfortable. I think this chapter was made to be upsetting because what happened during it was kinda important?

Warning; LONG POST (contains spoilers to new chapter)

First thing - Noe was forced to see some Vanitas’s memories. Of course by Misha eyes, but still it’s Vanis past. And as we know already, Vanitas REALLY didn’t want Noe to know about anything his past-related. He even threated him that he would kill you if Noe would someday try to drink his blood. So it’s opening for totally new conflict. We have two options

Vanitas would come to place and see Noe drinking Mishas blood and it would be horrible

Vanitas wouldn’t see it and Noe would live in sting of remorse and we know how emotional Noe is and it would be also horrible. And this option also has 2 options

Noe would finally tell Vani that he drank Mishas blood and it would be horrible

Misha would tell Vanitas that Noe drank his blood and it also would be horrible

When Noe started drinking Mishas blood he walked into a trap and there is no escape now. Vanitas is going to KNOW this and its going to be a problem, because knowing Vanis past, memories and emotions was a borderline in their relationship - Noe didn’t get a permission to step over it. And now he just... steped, because of Mishas blackmail.

Also the whole scene was made to be creepy - we can clearly see that Noe is distraught and scared and uncomfortable. We can hear his thoughts, we can see his terrified face

He is terrified for A LOT of reasons. A lot.

He is scared of Domis life. He don’t know what is going on with her and she is unconscious and she can literally DIE. Domi is his best friend, his childhood friend and nearly all family he has left. Domi is the closest person to him and he can’t just lose her like he lost Louis.

He DON’T WANT to read Vanitas’s past without his permission and knowledge. Its awful, it’s non consensual and non-con it’s something Noe hates, because, even if he would like to know Vani’s past (what he said back before Gevaudan arc) he don’t want to know it without Vanis consenst and he didn’t push. And now he is forced to see them, to betray Vani’s trust.He, probably, hates himself thanks to it.

He is blackmailed, bullied and intimidated which is bad on it’s own. He has absolutely NO CONTROL over a situation, he is absolutely subordinated and can’t do anything to change his situation. It’s scary.

He is forced to drink blood, which is a really intimate and delicate activity for him. He hates being forced to drink blood and forcing to drink blood, and, additionaly, Misha is a kid. Or, at least, he look like a kid (it’s hard to say his age for sure and how many years their past with Moreau happened). It’s gross, creepy and weird and Noe feels it. We can see him backing away from a fucking kid.

Jun did it purposely. Combine all of it, to made the horror moment for him, probably to break him in front o Misha.

The running thing in Vanitas no Carte is motif of Noe not having any control over anything in his life (even without his noticing). Noe never had a control over anything.

He didn’t have a control over his life during childhood, ie when he was sold on auction

He didn’t have any control over Louis’s death and curse. He couldn’t do anything to save him or to save other kids back then. He could do nothing.

He don’t have any control in general - he was trained by the Teacher to be his pupil. Noe don’t even know how big control Grandpa de Sade has over him and his doings.

He didn’t have any control when Domi found him at Orloks. She just kidnapped him to Altus.

He don’t have any control over his relationship with Jeanne - anytime he wants to talk to her or about her he is interuptted.

He didn’t want his blood be sucked by Ruthven and he didn’t want to Swear.

He don’t have any control now. He didn’t wanted to know Vanis past non consensualy, he didn’t wanted to drink Mishad blood, he don’t want to see Domi in this situation.

It’s a writing continuity. We are being told how little control Noe has over his (and others) life. It’s becaming a plot point. MochiJun knows what she is doing. She purposely made the whole chapter creepy and unsettling. She need us to know that what is happening right now is wrong - not only drinking blood from a 1/4 naked kid, but also the rest. Everything. That this chapter is traumatic - we literally touched Noes trauma, Domis trauma and Mishas trauma over a few pages and panels:

Dominique - we can see how she reacted to Louis death, how she wanted to make Noe feels better, why she changed her hairstyle and outfit, how she hated herself because it was her brother who died, not her. We can see it now - she is depressed, she hatees herself and would prefer to die over Louis. She was easy to catch for Misha.

Noe - we can see that he can do anything for Domi because she is his last friend, his family, last thing (person) he has. He can’t lose her, he is desperate and traumatized over Louis death so he can do anything, even suck Mishas blood and know Vanis past even if he hates it and its wrong for him.

Misha - we can see thanks to his flashbacks that it was hinted he was (if I undertand english correctly, sorry, it’s not my first language) se*//ually abused as a child. He thought his mother was possesed by devil, it was traumatizing on it’s own, but he was also dressed as a girl, physically abused and hit by his mother and used during her “sessions” with clients. Then he was kidnapped by Moreau who, probably, was experimenting on him just like on Vanitas - so Misha was abused again. And later Vanitas killed “father” what also traumatized him. His behaviour towards Noe it’s not really that suprising - its horrible and sad and heartbreaking knowing why Misha is that way, but its logical. It has sense. It’s just how his trauma made him.

Sooo do I think what happened in the chapter was good or okay? No. It was creepy and made me feel sick. But do I think Jun is bad for making it this way? No. I think her work is great, because she actually did planned it logically. She delivered TONS OF INFORMATIONS by only one chapter. Tons, about a lot of characters - Misha, Vanitas, Noe, Dominique, even Roland (he know Misha is one thing, but, also, why he was so beaten up? What happened my man? Who hurted you?) It wasn’t just gross pedo-fanservice some people accused it to be. (even if it was gross anyway och my gos this scene with Misha standing over Noe was frightening, I was just as scared as Noe, I felt like I was in his place and I was looking at Misha)

Also! I’m pretty sure one of the reason for Misha undressing his collar a little bit was for us (and maybe Noe too) to see his possesion mark on his arm. For some reason we, as an audience, need to know this.

But! We also get a lot of different informations -

Domi is a royal guard and is working in castle, so she probably knew Luca before and had contact with him or some other royal people. i think it’s interesting that she worked at castleas a royal guard.

Luca probably likes Domi and was worried about her. Also after knowing she is missing he decided to took direct actions, he is not passive.

Misha has Vanitas of the Blue Moon’s possesion mark on his hand. It’s really interesting, especially when we know that its his prosthetic arm. Somebody tried to cut his arm with a possesion mark and I bet it was Vanitas or Misha himself. Yet it DIDN’T work, mark of possesion is still here, above his prosthetic.

Noe “don’t know anything about Vanitas”. It was an important sentence. It was something that Noe need to know narratively speaking. It’s pushing the story forward, because Noe’s and Vani’s relationship is the core of the story. It was literally told in the first chapter that it’s a story about their journey.

Misha had a lot of bruises on his whole body after he was rescued. We knew he was beaten, but we could also see it’s evidence.

Mishas face when Noe drank his blood was similar to his mother face when a vampire drank his blood. It wasn’t accidental, we were shown his trauma and how it’s affected him.

Next thing I noticed:

In this panel, Misha looks A LOT like Vanitas. Og course he has child features and chubbier face, he has white(?) hair and eyelashes ets, but his mimic, his gaze, how one of his eyes is covered by hair and his words. Its literally how Vanitas’s panel would be draw. It’s really Vanitaish.

We also got some questions, like:

What happened to Misha and how he lost his hand?

What Luca ordered Jeanne? (probably to check out real Paris and maybe find Domi or Noe)

Why Mishas mark of possesions was so important for us to know?

Is that Roland met Misha in the past important?

Why was Roland so beaten up?

There was also one more thing. Jun is operating in her story not only by making parallels betweend her characters (ie Teacher and VotBM, or Astolfo nad Vanitas, or Louis and Domi etc) but also contrasts. The biggest contrast motif on the story are probably Vanitas and Noe thanks to not only their history, but also their appearance, personality, design of their clothes, their height, their names (Vanitas being related to death and vanity, Noe being related to saving and something biblical etc). Their whole characters are made constrast. And so we got here:

Vanitas and Misha are not made parallels, theyre made contrast.

Misha is looking from the upside, Vanitas is looking from the above, Mishas hair is white, Vanitas hair is black, Vani has a shadow over his face, misha is lighted. Misha has white eyelashes, Vani has black. Misha looks calm an suprised, Vani looks stressed. Their whole “atmosphere” is different. Even if Misha is bruised in this panel he looks clean, even angelic, when Vanitas looks... bad, he has dark circles under eyes, wrinkled eyebrows, bandage etc. They’re made to contrast themselves, not to be compared to. It’s the next hint about their role in the story I suppose. That they’re not similar, they’re not the same and there is something basically different about their roles.

I would also like to write about shadow and light work in this chapter, but I’m just really tired right now, soo here it is! My analyze od the new chapter, or, at least, the most important parts of it (for me). I liked it in general, but it was... stressed and I was anxious about this chapter for the one whole day. But in general I think Jun did gods work with delivering informations she wanted to delivere.

AHHHHHHHHHH THIS IS GOING TO GET SOOOO LONG!!!! i have a different view of the indo fam as a whole. i call them the indo fam but i mean the found family trope!!!! theyre like a group of college students sharing a dorm if that makes sense, since their servant selves are obviously different from their initial myths/human vessels!!!

OK SO. RECENTLY, i have an oomf that found books about arjuna that summarize his exploits in the mahabharata(I DONT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO READ IT ALL IM SO SORRY) and also talk about him in a more philosphical manner such as his states of mind during each event etc and i’ve been meaning to read said book because im genuinely interested in arjuna now!!! and i’d like to know more about this indo prince because from what i’ve seen, he is portrayed in a rather bad light(?) in FGO which i find extremely !!!!!!!!!!! and incrdibley !!!!!!! strange !!!!!!! the mahabharata’s conflicts can be put in a mostly grey area where there’s no good nor bad, its not black and white. so seeing arjuna get bashed because of the way his conflict with karna was written is... hm. let’s say that im REALLY starting to understand arjuna fans that dislike seeing him get mischaracterized so much. OTHER THAN THAT, his design is adorable, his travel outfit is my favourite because he deserves to relax and have some fun!!! fgo making him a chuuni is cute and his VAs little moans are cute cute cute!!!!!!!!!!! (mash grabs my shoulder and forces me to sit down) i think that arjuna deserves better and im really happy to see him have fun in his travel costume voicelines. i think we should take arjun on a date!!! he’s a great lover, we’d have the best time!! OH ALSO, kama seeing him as the student council president in their interlude makes me SOOOOOOO HAPPY its unreal, i think it fits him very very well, the seitokaichou who was elected because of everyone’s hopes and recommended by teachers because he’s suuuch a good student but because of that, the pressure to be good is constantly towering over his head and everytime he looks out the window he wishes he could ditch class and skip a day just because he felt like going to the arcade and be a bad student.......just this once........i think hes very very cute...... i want him to cook for me. ANEWAYS i also have quite the thoughts about karna, his characterization in the game is linked to arjuna’s and thats fine but i think that forgetting how much of a little sassy bastard he can get was a mistake! did you know that in apocrypha’s german dub on netflix, when jeanne calls his name like “You’re Karna, aren’t you ? The son of the Indian Sun God !” HES LIKE “So ?” AND THAT WAS SOOOO BITCHY OF HIM, i think that karna is a good boy in fgo but the fact that he was such a fighty old man in the mahabharata shouldnt be forgotten and is a charm trait. I MEAN ???? HE THREW HANDS WITH AN 18 YEAR OLD(ARJUN) WHILE BEIN LIKE... THIRTY TWO. WHATS WITH THIS ANNOYING OLD MAN !!!!! knowing these little facts about him made me like him so much more actually !! i think karna being so nice is adorable!! but the little bitchy energy u can find in his voicelines is also very charming!! i think karna looking at me emotionless as i ask him to lend me his notes for the nth time that week and then saying “...Mn.” when i thank him is cute!!! his voiceline towards things he dislikes is interesting to me. karna seeming aloof and mean bc he doesnt know how to communicate but is actually nice underneath...... hey... thats a little delinquentcore........ i wouldnt say yankii but hes like... hes like... u know hes the handsome quiet one of the group of yankiis... u know the one...? hey where are you going

ganesha is also a character im deeply interested in but i havent played CCC so i dont know that many details about jinako herself !! my brain goes HMMMMMM it seems lord ganesha is trans in fgo ! (since kama used to be a male god originally as well!!) ganesha uses all pronouns!!! and ganesha is also special to me because they share similar traits with kama when it comes to their characterization AND mischaracterizations. ganesha isnt JUST jinako. theres a part of a god in the servant mix!!! and jinako HERSELF is actually a pretty sad character imo. the whole otaku/neet thing is obviously a facade and her true wish being that she wants to redo her whole life is also proof of how much she hates what shes become, yet at the same time, she doesnt know what else she could do. but anyways, i prefer looking at servants from a lore POV so i think that ganesha should still be considered a god and be adressed as such!! i like seeing people portray ganesha as jinako but i prefer it when a certain lavish more godly side of them is put forward. a side of jinako that managed to move on a little bit if that makes sense ? that got more serious. and became someone else entierly despite sharing similarities. needless to say their bond with karna makes me happy since he shows them respect as you should towards a god!! its a bit different from their bond in CCC... like they matured somewhat!! anyway ganesha is the one who taught everyone else in the indo fam about video games and technology and i will NEVER shut up.

(... would sita count.) and lakshi being a jeanneface is a waste. well, she’s still very pretty and her lore is also quite interesting!! i havent looked into it fully yet but i think she should be kissed on the mouth. her bad luck makes me slip on a banana peel whenevr i get close to her to kiss her and i hit my head on the pavement and pass away-

parvati is on a tough spot for me atm. i genuinely love thinking of her as the way the indian goddess herself is portrayed because thats where the fun lies for me in her character. especially when shes involved with other indian servants, thats a given!! i would like to see parvati grow, suffer and heal. because branding her as an “all-knowing mom” is easy, but every single parent makes mistakes if you follow that logic. also, since shes the sakura servant “thats closest to her initial personality”, she’s got some of the most Repulsive fans ive Ever witnessed in fandom spaces and lets say that im trying to work my way out of this hellhole and find things to like about parvati without the fandom’s influence. needless to say, im going to keep looking into her mythos and her lore by myself at my own pace and keep doing my own thing in my little corner.

rama shouldve been a jock. THE RAMAYANA IS OLDER THAN THE MAHABHARATA, WHY IS.....Hrm well him being summoned as his baby version gives me hope for a future rama alt perhaps??? but i think that he shouldve been a total jock and he shouldve been huge with a huge red lion-like mane for his hair and a teethy grin and big biceps and intense love for his wife. SPEAKING OF SITA, her charm point is her purity but i wish.... that their artist still hadnt drawn them like That, im not a fan of lily servants and i think purity = being young is a bit of an annoying excuse!!! rama and sita looking similar is because of their shared history which is fine but... rolls my eyes............. rama shouldve been 6ft tall and sita shouldve been a milf to match...... anyways i doubt ravana would be added as a servant but i’d love to have a ramayana centric event!! where all indo servants have their own lore centric role to play!!! oh thatd be a dream.... but i have learned to not expect much from a fanservice game so im jus gonna draw my own stuff! 14. Do they have someone that they consider to be a family member, even if they’re not related to your character by blood? What was one of your character’s favourite moments with them, and what makes them so special to them?

CUCKOOCHIRP || hmmm let’s see….excluding his family (breamcloud, eveningscale, mintcloud, vervainstripe), then that would have to be Appleleaf, the ShadowClan seer! I’ve mentioned before that hazelnose was suffering from memory loss/degradation towards the mid/end of cuckoothroat’s apprenticeship and appleleaf was the one who stepped up and helped him with his training. Cuckoochirp came to both care about and admire appleleaf and they are always the first cat that cuckoochirp turns to when he needs advice or tips. They’re a very talented medicine cat and clever/crafty, which cuckoochirp also looks up to a lot; the duo developed a mentor-apprentice like relationship from early on and they’re both always excited to see each other. Cuckoochirps favorite moments with appleleaf were probably general training times! Appleleaf naturally couldnt just up and leave shadowclan for days, so theyd come by and visit or cuckoo would scamper on off to shadowclan for seer advice and lessons! Cuckoochirp thinks of the times when they’d both walk around the territories and examine herbs and their uses very fondly!

NIGHTTHROAT || OUGH OBVIOUS ANSWER BUT vervainstripe! Vervainstripe was the first friend nightthroat ever made in riverclan and i just dropped a little fic that touched up on their kind of dynamic just now but!!! Theyre very close and best friends, and nightthroats pretty much been absorbed into vervainstripes family because of how vervain as an apprentice would basically drag/invite night onto every endeavor or task at any opportunity he could!!!! Nightthroats favorite moments with vervainstripe would be their time alone when he and vervain would/do go out on walks. Vervain tends to ramble about a lot of things all at once and night might not believe in everything vervain chatters about he still listens fondly and endearingly bc he just loves it when his little buddy talks!Hes also pretty close with his apprentice shrewpaw! Theyre both rather mellow/logical cats and shrew actually went to night first about his gender issues and once he worked through it with nightthroat he went on to tell his family and the rest of his clan!

ROSEPAW || rosepaws got quite the growing amount of friends HA…besides his blood family in riverclan (hornetflower, beestorm and lightningface, honeystream), rosepaws closest to sootpaw, rookpaw and minkclaw! He used to be really close to swallowfang (his old windclan mentor) but after swallowfang helped orchestrate rosepaws escape from winclan (in secret) she had to drop contact with him in case yellow or gray go too suspicious. Besides that, rookpaw was one of rosepaws only friend in windclan (sycamorepaw/smokepaw/willowpaw were/are his friends but they were usually bustled away from contact with rosepaw bc the adults just. Wanted the kids to stay out of the drama). Rookpaw had been rosepaw’s best friend since their nursery days and when rosepaw was confined to the seer’s den, rookpaw would often worm his way into the den despite the disapproval of others and care for/curl around rosepaw (he’d bring him food and groom him as well). Rookpaw took a lot of care of rosepaw when he was still in windclan and he still keeps a good ear out for him now that rose is in riverclan!Now onto SOOTSY ROLL and MINKSTER….sootpaw was rosepaws first friend when he joined riverclan and as ive mentioned before they hit it off real quick due to their feelings of not having enough ties within riverclan! They quickly became best friends and, thanks to the fact that their mentors are also best friends, the duo practically do everything together in riverclan! Rose often drags soot along for things and soot makes sure that his dumb ass doesnt like, slam face first into a hive of bees (they have a very hornet-mink kind of friendship except soot can also be pretty reckless, but she’s grown a bit more hesitant/careful since the event with ashpaw happened). And mink/rose are obviously close because mink helped with rose’s rescue mission and now, as his mentor, the two spend a lot of time together. Rose has come to view mink in a very comforting position - almost like a better older sister or maybe even a mother figure (though he typically jokingly refers to hornetflower as mom). Theyre very attached to each other and care abt each other a lot!!!

OTTERPAW || once again excluding his blood relatives (lampreyface, shrewpaw, harrierpaw and cricketkit!), otterpaw is closest to hollypaw and chubstream! Ur gonna see a lot of really close-knit mentor/apprentice relationships in this story FHBDSHFD its rare to find a set who didnt like each other (i mean it happens but its just unusual)Hollypaw is otterpaws best friend since the nursery days as well, and although otterpaw is skilled at caring for kits and nursery issues, hollypaw is the one who steps up and takes care of otterpaw. Otter tends to be reckless when paired up with cats his age, and with his history with his father elmfoot, holly is quick to jump to otters defense in any time of need. In fact, it was hollypaw and sootpaw who were the ones who rescued otterpaw from his dad one day and holly literally fought elmfoot for otterpaw while soot ran off to get help. Theyre still super close and because of how close they are gorsefang is also on relatively good terms with otterpaw - they can be rather brunt and emotionally distant but theyve accepted otterpaw into their family as hollypaw’s best friend and gorse will get involved in trouble if it means protecting their son and his best friend from danger!Chubstream is also naturally close to otterpaw because chub is his mentor! Chub was ecstatic when otterpaw came to caretaking and was assigned as his apprentice and chub is a very encouraging and sweet figure in otterpaws life!Also of course rosepaw and otterpaw are growing closer but theyre not like family close lol theyre just good fwiends

CHUBSTREAM || CHUBBY BUBBY… i mentioned earlier that otterpaw/chubstream are close of course so besides that and his blood relatives (briarflower, minkclaw), chubstream is particularly tight with craneheart and even gorsefang, surprisingly! I mentioned earlier (again audhfusidf) that gorsefang had good terms with otterpaw, and as both chub + gorse are caretakers they found themselves hanging out more and more as otterpaws training went on. Chub however has always been pretty close with craneheart, and he was particularly involved in sootkit’s (and ashkit’s) nursery days when they were brought to riverclan. The three are good friends and although gorsefang comes off a little distant, they all care abt each other nonetheless

18. Does your character believe the ends justify the means? No matter who they have to step on to reach their goals?

CUCKOOCHIRP || nnnnnnnnno honestly. Cuckoo is very empathetic and the idea of hurting others or stepping on others reaaaally doesnt sit right with him. He doesnt agree that the ends justify the means especially if youre hurting, damaging or even killing someone in the process and this is one of the few things that can land you in permanent hot water with mr cuckoochirp

NIGHTTHROAT || hmm this one i gotta think about. I think nightthroat would agree with this but there’d have to be a limit? Of course he doesnt agree with getting others hurt bc huoy but he also doesn’t like the idea of being stagnant just because ur afraid of confrontation. Hes good at speech and talking and if theres something that needs to get done he’d rather talk it out or talk out a way that doesn’t end up hurting anyone emotionally/mentally or physically - but he does understand the idea in the most extreme circumstances.

ROSEPAW || another toughy! Rose doesnt agree with hurting others but hes okay with playing with peoples feelings and hes known to flirt and be cutesy/pretty when he wants something (hornetflower has given a lecture or too bc sometimes rose will try to flirt with an apprentice in another clan to will them to give him their most recent fresh catch lmao) but he doesnt agree with it if its like. Physically or extremely damaging, you know? In minor cases hes okay with it and even does it but in the grand scheme hes not fond of it lol

OTTERPAW || also a BIG no like cuckoochirp! Otter dealt with a lot of horrible shit from his father that could be boiled down to “the end (making otterpaw stronger for survival) justified the means (abusing him)” so he doesnt agree with it at all. However hes not exactly the most caring of others? He cares a lot about kits in the nursery and works well with them, but cats his age and older he can come off as kinda stand-offish and when it comes to drama like someone getting hurt by another persons path, he tends to stay out of it

CHUBSTREAM || another no! Chubs empathetic like cuckoo and he actively will get pissed at you if you hurt someone just because they were in the way of what you wanted. Hes not easy to anger but this will be something that really pisses him off

28. When your character was younger, how did they picture themselves growing up? Does it differ from how they really turned out?Leaving otter and rose outta this one bc they are still….relatively young lol theyre only about 10 - 11 moons currently

CUCKOOCHIRP || cuckoo had a lot of self esteem issues growing up. He wasnt bad at training as a warrior, but he wasnt happy and it wasnt sitting with him so around them he probably pictured his grown up self as just. Another face in the crowd? Nothing special or important - when he went into seer training, his mood brightened a lot but his moods take major dips after losses, especially after the loss of robinstream and hazelnose. then , his future self would switch based on his mood: sometimes he pictured himself as well liked and a crafty seer who went down in history with a positive note, or on bad days he imagined he’d end up as a disaster seer that ran riverclan into the ground. Nowadays hes a good seer - he’s good at his job and he’s great at making friends and alliances, and pretty popular amongst the population of the season change setting!

NIGHTTHROAT || nightthroat when he was a kid probably didnt see his future self as..even existing. His mother constantly told him how hard life was and he trained under her strictly learning how to survive - his mother had lost litters before due to inexperience and by the time she had night, her biggest focus was making sure he had learned enough to survive. Any idea of his future self that night had wouldve boiled down to either being dead due to external forces or a hardened rogue living on his own, and rather lonely. However he joined riverclan and now he’s got friends that he loves and cares for deeply and his life isnt nearly as hardened or lonely as he initially imagined it would be

CHUBSTREAM || pretty cut and dry! He imagined he’d live a long happy life with his mother and sister in riverclan, and he’s growing up that path right now! He’s very content in life and with the place he’s at right now

50. What’s their earliest memory?

CUCKOOCHIRP || goofing off with his siblings in the nursery den as his mothers watched on fondly

NIGHTTHROAT || hiding out with his mom underneath a man-made object from the rain, seeking shelter until the storm passed and his mom would take him out onto a hunting trip

ROSEPAW || wrestling or playing a game with rook while his older siblings campionfang and thriftfoot watched on, occasionally dipping in with their own game for the two kits - he’d rarely see his father or yellowtail, but at least he had those three.

OTTERPAW || squashed beneath harrierkit as he tried to get away from a bath session lampreyface demanded, before wriggling out from underneath his older brother and shuffling next to shrewkit, safely wrapped up in lampreyface’s thick-furred, warm tail

CHUBSTREAM || minkkit nibbling on his ear in the middle of the night, only to get shushed in frustration by his very-tired mother because dammit minkkit stop trying to wrestle chubkit and go to sleep!

66. If they were free to do anything, be it cruel, kind, or otherwise, without fear of repercussions, what is it that your character would do?

CUCKOOCHIRP || wander freely between other clan territory! He may be allowed to venture into shadowclan’s territory since shadowclan and riverclan are on good terms (and b/c apple and cuckoo are close), but windclan and thunderclan warriors wouldnt take kindly to cuckoochirp stepping over their border boundaries willy-nilly

NIGHTTHROAT || talk about his own emotions without fear of how others would reject or react to him - maybe even ask someone specific out on a date. He’s a good mediator and he’s great at debating + speech but he rarely opens up about his own feelings

ROSEPAW || meet up with his friends whenever he pleased. He doesnt really care about borders as much, and he’d love to be able to cross and visit his friends in their camps whenever he wanted to!

OTTERPAW || word………………..probably just have a night to himself away from the camp? Or maybe just him and the cats close to him? Sometimes being in a large group gets overwhelming and he just wants to take it slow for a day

CHUBSTREAM || this isnt really a whole “fear of repercussions” thing but chub would love to raise a kitten/litter of kittens who viewed him as his dad one day but the opportunity hasn’t showed up yet. He wants 2 be a dad yo

69. Do they enjoy facing their fears? CAN they face their fears? If not, what do they do in a situation where they’re forced to face them?

CUCKOOCHIRP || huoy……cuckoo definitely doesn’t enjoy facing his fears but he can do it. He can even stand up to someone who’s terrified him - and he will which you guys will see happen in action eventually on. He has his own ways of standing up for himself/for others and being defiant against what he’s scared of

NIGHTTHROAT || :)………………he deals with a great big fear in the comic and you’ll just have to wait and see how he handles that huh ;)))

ROSEPAW || nooOOOoooo he won’t even go near windclan territory because he’s scared of it. He’d rather chase his own thrills or what he’s comfortable with rather than deal with whatever petrifies him the most. He’d probably lash out and grow aggressive if placed into a situation where he had to face those kind of fears/trauma

OTTERPAW || another great big no to both! Otter has developed a severe fear of water/being in water due to his father, so he stays away from venturing into water. He grows sick/queasy when he’s so much as paw deep in water and often crosses the territory via dry spots. He relies on hollypaw heavily when he’s scared and he would panic and flounder if dropped into the water randomly

CHUBSTREAM || i think chub could face his fears - he’s deeply worried about losing those he loves, especially with how close he came to losing minkclaw when she was injured by that fox as an apprentice. However if he ever did lose someone he was close to, he’d grieve but he would move on, eventually. Life goes on

This week’s ask meme Monday theme is “I make my friends do math” SO start at the top and answer prime numbers until you 1) run out of characters 2) run out of prime numbers or 3) lose interest. STEM boy

but i’m still doing it. randomly rolling starting with pcs, then npcs, then stopping

1. What’s one experience your character had that made them very afraid? Isaac: so i don’t know how much i’ve said on here about what isaac’s experience in hell actually Was Like. and i think I’ve used the word “puppet” before, and I think that was what it was like. she doesn’t remember a whole lot about it, because for the most part, she just wasn’t there. if she really tried, i think she could remember specific things, but she doesn’t Like To. it’s remembering when you had no choice or control, when your body wasn’t your own and you had to smile and laugh for things with too many hands and tails and teeth. a devil full ass remade her as a tiefling, grew her horns slowly but surely through the skin of her cheeks, up and through and out her eye sockets. like. shits fucked. now that she has her brain back, shes Very afraid of the thing that did that to her.

2. What is your character’s happiest memory? Nyxi: her patron probably had a kid while she was working with her and oh my god...... thinking about her and that tiny small little baby while her patron recovered....... knowing that no she wasn’t the one to give birth to them but they’re going to be, like their siblings have been, just a much a child of hers as theyve all been. she loved all her kids, of course, but there was something special about holding that baby in the first few hours of their life, watching them grow up and helping them with that growth. she’d probably rank those first few hours among the happiest of her life, for sure.

3. What’s one skill your character really wishes they had? Sarril: hmmmm. the ability to heal, maybe? I think that’s the kind of skill he would like. there’s just something nice about like. even if you get too angry and go too far there’s still a way for you to make it right, you know?

7. Have they ever encountered someone they really wanted to kill? Zephyr: no. like does she dislike a lot of people? sure! but she’s been mostly a stay-in-the-ivory-tower kind of person, and as such hasn’t really made any enemies. rivals, sure, yeah, and I doubt she made many friends before she entered into the academy. but she doesn’t want to kill anyone. (yet.)

11. What was something they struggled with greatly and how did they overcome it? Legacy: hmmmmm. I think legacy struggled a lot with like.... Mattering, if that makes sense? I think she got her Powers rather early in life because her grandmother looked at her immediately post her spouse dying and went “yeah she’s old enough” and came by like “yo adore whats up. want some cool Spells (eventually) and also to be my grandchild” and legacy, then adore, then 9 years old, said “boy WOULD I!!!!!” and then she spent the next eight or nine years really struggling with what to do with them? she’s got spells at this point and all she’s done is work in a print shop. at some point she turned to petty crime because she was good at lying her ass off, and then eventually she got a sword and went to Adventure because she straight up didn’t know what else she wanted to do. it’s only now that she’s kind of figuring out that like. yeah she does kinda like adventuring? even more when there’s people around her.

13. Does your character have anyone that they really care about, to the point that they would give their life for them? If so, who are they and what is your character’s relation to them? If not, do they wish they did? Is there anyone they wish they could build such a relationship with? Zier: so like......... yes and no? zier sucks. zier sucks big time. and I think the closest thing he has at least at the points i’ve played him, are MAYBE one of his little siblings. like yes he’s meant to be making them paranoid and selfish. but also maybe he has a little sister who’s just always been a bit too soft for his family. and maybe he remembers that he’s the only boy in his family because his oldest sister killed the other one. so maybe he’s a little protective but very good at pretending like he isn’t. maybe his littlest sister knows better than to trust him even if she’s soft, so he’ll never have much more of a relationship with her than that. and maybe he wishes that it was different. and maybe he knows better.

17. How was their childhood? Did their parents treat them fairly? Did they have any really good friends? Kenny: kenny had a very nice set of parents and I think I said in game that he had a little brother but I also think he might’ve been an only child? idk. but this ask doesn’t ask that!!! his parents were very fair. maybe a little lax but only because kenny was a pretty Good Kid. and I do think he kind of sees them through rose colored glasses now that theyre gone but they were pretty good. his tragic backstory focuses on Losing them. in addition, I think he did have some really good friends! he’s a charming boy and pretty friendly, and it was a decently small village. I think he found some other folk his own age and they played together when they were young and that translated into proper friendship as they got older.

19. Have they ever lost a loved one? What happened to them, and are they the same as they were before they lost them? Ecstasy: okay so. I made it semi canon that when she got the reapers hand, it may or may not have made her shoot her best friend point blank to devour her soul when it got hungry. I am canonizing this. this did happen, and it was the reason ecstasy started taking rogue levels instead of fighter levels. she like. got back to using guns? but she handed over her hugely cursed but also HUGELY powerful gun to her fuckbuddy’s friend without much of a fight, I’ll tell you that much.

23. Does your character know any languages apart from their native language? What one would they like to learn? Glade: lemme look at his character sheet. okay he only knows common and orcish. he uses common a lot more than he uses orcish, but orcish was his first language and now that he has red he uses it a lot more, trying to have her pick it up as a language too. and this is a predictable answer but still true: if he had much time to learn a language, he’d learn infernal. he knows a few words because he’s married to a tiefling, but he doesn’t have the bloodline-given understanding of the language like they do and he would Like To Know What His Wife And Two Year Old Are Giggling About, Please.

29. If they could change just one thing about themselves, what would it be? Endurance: so. like. I don’t know if endurance would change anything about herself??? actually no she would. she would love it if she were more decisive. like, relentless decided to fall and decided to claw her way back to amaunator’s side, and endurance like. isn’t like that at all. I think a lot of her regrets are still tied up in “should I have turned lent into the crownsguard” and because of the violence that happened, she shouldn’t have. but like. she REALLY hates how unsure she is about the circumstances surrounding it, you know? she didn’t heal her, she didn’t really try and stop it until it was too late, and she hasn’t accepted that she was passive in those circumstances. at least if she were more decisive, she thinks she would have already made peace with the things she did pre and post lent’s fall.

31. How patient is your character with others? Do they find it easy to handle people that try and bug them, or hard? Iris: very patient. she’s a princess and also deals with motherfuckers unlimited Literally Constantly. she’s SO patient. however. she also takes no shit. if someone is trying to bug her, then she will not attempt to deal with it. her ability to have Diplomacy means that she can rather easily and relatively politely just go “you are not having this conversation with me in a respectful manner. if you can stop deliberately prodding me for a reaction, we can continue with what we are discussing. if you cannot or refuse to respect me and my time here with you, then I am stopping the conversation here. which option would you like?”

41. Where do they live? What is that place like, do they enjoy living there? Kiya: kiya likes highgrasp! she probably likes it more than any other place she’s lived. it’s a nice city, it’s a clean city, she likes the ocean, and she likes the job she got there. not much to complain about!

43. What are they like when they’re drunk? Don’t be a prude and tell me they’ve never been smashed before. Coriander: zephyr and coriander are the Same when drunk. Loud and Intelligent. coriander also may be a Horny drunk but that may be because she just likes talking about her spouse and thinks (rightly so) that they are Sexy. she will get on her construct to be eight feet taller than most opponents and she will Debate them about magical theory whether they want to be a part of the conversation or not. oooh my god this is typical ellie “answered too long” there are no short responses but lots of ebull spoilers bc i dont care.

1. Does your character have siblings or family members in their age group? Which one are they closest with?

ebull has one big sister! she and her are obnoxiously close, and have been known to game situations so that they’re both doing similar things at the same time -- just so they can spend as much time together as physically possible. they’re physically separated most of the time, so they have to make any time they get for each other really count--!

ebull has always been achingly protective over her sis, who, in turn, is a bit more clever and wise than her. they kind of have always lived in each other’s minds and they really balance each other out!

2. What is/was your character’s relationship with their mother like?

loving, but distant. ebull doesn’t see her mother that much -- mostly for vacations and for the odd week or two out of the year. she talks to her on the phone often enough, but it’s not quite the same.

most of their face-to-face interaction is based in her mom making up for lost time -- which tends to lead to ebull’s fashion and life choices being prodded at. lovingly! but in that completely-serious-tongue-in-cheek way. theyre a pretty dry but warm family over there in gen, but it does embarrass her a bit.

she’s a bit more secretive towards her mom than with her dad -- but doesn’t really find that to be a bad thing! mostly bc her mom is a bit of a gossip though and it Strains Her Life. she’s also got an issue with respecting ebull’s privacy and she really hates that.

3. What is/was your character’s relationship with their father like?

extremely close. ebull is a bit of a daddy’s girl and it’s kind of obvious -- she spends a lot of time with him, tells him all of her issues, asks him for advice, rags on him -- and he dotes on her like no one’s business. she could probably get away with murder and have her dad ask her where to hide the body -- he enables a lot of her behaviors in a way her mom refuses to.

he does have a few very hard limits, though. and ... makes it painful when she crosses them, because he tends to feel rather personally slighted if ebull keeps things from him or goes against direct advice. they live together most of the time when ebull isn’t at home, so she tries to avoid this whenever possible.

sometimes by drawing in! oops. privacy.

he’s a really dry but extremely warm guy in gen tho -- kind of a great person and ebull admires him a lot.

does not fucking get video games though.

4. Has your character ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone else know?

ummm not really, not counting murder game things.

sawako’s death fucked her up in a way that she doesn’t like to talk about -- even to people she’s close to -- but well! that’s private--!

not even michiko knows the extent there and that’s saying something.

5. On an average day, what can be found in your character’s pockets?

advil, spare bandannas, potions, sawako’s love/friendship potion (it pokes at her back like constantly), tissues, pens, little scraps of paper, small vials of perfume, essential oils, hand cream, hershey kisses, needle + thread, mini toothpaste/toothbrush, a photo of her sister, gum, about four tubes of lipstick, mascara, her ID, like a single monocoin, sometimes you get a spare pair of clothing in there (plus calvins!), breath freshener, nail polish, nail cutters.

her jacket has more pockets than you’d ever fucking know.

6. Does your character have recurring themes in their dreams?

warmth. being enveloped in warmth. sunny days, laying in the grass, swinging a bat with her dad, driving over 100mph and feeling the warmth of the car through her hands.

sometimes she dreams of ow characters kissing her too but that’s a whoooole other kind of warmth she wouldn’t admit to.

7. Does your character have recurring themes in their nightmares?

coldness. dying slowly and alone. calling out to people to receive no answer. people she’s close to telling her she’ll be right back and not answering her call thirty minutes later. various situations of seeing various corpses of cared-for people in increasingly horrifying death poses.

8. Has your character ever fired a gun? If so, what was their first target?

nah! why use guns when she’s got THESE GUNS [pretend she flexed]

9. Is your character’s current socioeconomic status different than it was when they were growing up?

nah not really! and if it did change, she didn’t really notice.

10. Does your character feel more comfortable with more clothing, or with less clothing?

being honest -- super honest? more. a lot more. jackets and things to cover her neck -- she can’t wear dresses comfortably without pulling tights up or she feels uncomfortable.

but she’s willing to wear the hot ‘skimpy clothing’ to fit in better with her ‘fellow teens’ because that’s what’s attractive, right?? god shes sure this works?? janties are in season right she can bring them back??

stunningly if ebull is comfy w u she tends to wear more clothes in ur presence idk what that says about her.

11. In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?

the first few months in the game, before merge. it was a constant, waking fear back then. wake up in cold sweats and close to puking. character spoilers: she was always worried, anxious, and uncomfortable but u know she’s thriving.

(also, she’s ridiculously good at seeming calm).

there have been high points since merge -- including not getting texts back from tomoka, michiko calling her for help in ch5, and some assorted Other Business (lol) but yeah it’s eased off a little and hasn’t breached that level since.

outside of game i dont know if ebull knows what it’s like to know fear. she DID have a frighten that she thought was rather substantial in telling her parents she got into hpa for being a gamer but honestly she lived and like most things in her life it went better than she expected it to.

12. In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?

well, she’s really good at SEEMING calm despite alarm bells in her head. and she actually thrives during high stress situations! she is deathly composed and very comfortable during raids, and actually has found that trials are kind of becoming comforting, in a sense -- and she feels calm in her accusations.

in general, she does better once she’s used to a rotation.

13. Is your character bothered by the sight of blood? If so, in what way?

nah not really! she’s more squeamish than she seems at first glance, but it doesn’t obstruct her from what ‘has to be done,’ so to speak.

14. Does your character remember names or faces easier?

names -- comes with the territory (given the fact that she deals primarily with online people). but she’s super good at both, and very rarely gets a name unattached to a face -- or forgets either. she finds it inspires bad blood.

15. Is your character preoccupied with money or material possession? Why or why not?

kiiiiind of ? it’s a strange case. ebull’s used to the finer things in life and has certain standards -- like, if she’s dating someone, she insists on both sentimental and expensive gifts (because the combination ensures that she covers her bases and that they “really” care about her -- it’s proper that way), and if she was denied anything from her current standard of life she... might go through a bit of a culture shock, really.

money and status has been a huge theme of her life and upbringing -- with two working parents who sacrifice family time for their successes. so she knows what it’s like to have a lot of it in a rather... passive way. she has no interest in the excess that her family can get into, but she’s never ever ever had to even think about money in a lasting way -- she gets speeding tickets out the ass and the only concern she has is how her family might bully her, rather than the monetary cost associated with it.

she can afford to not be preoccupied with wealth, is probably the best way to put it. she gets that this puts her in a pretty good position, and is empathetic to people who struggle, but really wouldn’t know what to do if she couldn’t just pay for shit she breaks without thinking about it. so like, she’s not out there purposefully decorating her house with useless pieces of shitty expensive art or always after the highest brands, but wouldnt know what to do if the ability to do that was suddenly stripped away.

16. Which does your character idealize most: happiness or success?

ebull would claim a mix of both -- that competence and fulfillment in other areas help to ensure happiness, etc, but.

if you really put a gun to her head on this one, she’d have to admit to ‘happiness.’ she’s not very ambitious and not competitive in the slightest -- if she’s struggling emotionally and upset all the time, what point is there to her successes? does success mean anything if it’s not attached to fulfilling work?

she’d never claim that people have to be happy all the time, but don’t you have to lose to fully appreciate your wins? it’s a conundrum.

she’s very go-with-the-flow in nature, and finds things escalate fast when people stress over finishing, being right, or attaining perfection. it’s better to take a walk and let it sit for your health and happiness than push yourself further.

this is probably at least partially due to her overall ‘ahh’ feeling about how much her family works, but she absolutely doesn’t hold it against people who think differently. kind of admires them, really! she’s just not built for it.

17. What was your character’s favorite toy as a child?

a stuffed monkey her dad got for her during one of his trips to america. she keeps it somewhere in her room.

18. Is your character more likely to admire wisdom, or ambition in others?

ambition ambition ambition -- though admittedly, ebull has neither trait, in her view. wisdom is fine and good, but it’s easy to sit and get complacent with it, she finds. also people who think of themselves as ‘wise’ tend to give her headaches.

she admires cleverness above both but finds it’s not the same as either.

19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

jesus christ where do i even fucking start it’s kind of a cyclical mess.

her biggest is most likely how long it typically takes her to get comfortable with people. ebull finds vulnerability, opening up, and the like... extremely difficult (but v attractive). she’s extremely adept at turning conversations into what the other person is feeling, and avoids giving any insight about her life in most situations -- even with people she claims to be close to. she keeps any cards she intends to keep close to her chest, even when it doesn’t make sense to. she’s understanding to the point of becoming a doormat in some places, and is easy to take advantage of once she’s committed -- but fears getting to that level, and will naturally close off if someone doesn’t read her mind and figure that she’s uneasy.

then she’ll ghost that person for hurting her feelings or just using her. which happens often, not because someone actually did, but because she thought they did.

she works primarily in the realm of assumed knowledge, and, as a naturally perceptive person, knows that it’s unfair of her to assume people will remember as much about her as she does to them -- but it hurts her feelings anyway if she’s close to (or is crushing on) someone who doesn’t seem to just ‘get her.’ you can’t rush things in too fast, but you also have to be the one to make the first move. you have to get her but be okay that she will almost never tell you a direct answer.

she keeps her preferences and desires coy and mysterious until she’s comfy and ugh yeah.

like in general this is a self-feeding mess of an issue here and it’s of no surprise that before the game she’d never been in a relationship.

20. In what ways does your character compare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake of self-validation, or self-criticism?

usually it’s just to look for improvements to herself. she very rarely uses other people as a basis as to what she should be doing in an excusatory way -- like ‘if theyre not working, i dont have to be.’ she hates that.

21. If something tragic or negative happens to your character, do they believe they may have caused or deserved it, or are they quick to blame others?

she always -- and i mean always -- blames herself first. this drives BYE(star)BYE up a wall when theyre playing games because yeah she does this incorrectly a lot.

she usually needs people to let her know when she’s being a bit too hard on herself or over-extending. but even in these situations she... relies on someone else to take the blame off her directly, rather than believing it entirely herself.

22. What does your character like in other people?

cunning, warmth, a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude, bullying, ambition, COMPETENCE, a bit of daredevil attitude, ability to hold her leash, genuine care, passion, ability to admit fault, EMPATHY, work ethic, good-humoredness, effort, something that i can only describe as ‘has the vibe of a ‘’’bad boy’’’ but treats her right,’ the ability to balance her out in any way fucking possible, the ability to make decisions, teamwork, commitment, the ability to just ‘get her,’ caution.

no one person can have all these things which is so upsetting but she lives. mostly if you balance her out and make her smile... she’s good.

23. What does your character dislike in other people?

brattiness, hypocritical behaviors, blaming others needlessly, saccharine niceness, people who are weirdly friendly, touchiness too soon, obstructing team work, people who think theyre somehow above rules/norms, unwarranted self-importance, people who dont even pretend to try to understand where others are coming from, people who expect other people to do work for them, people who spread gossip too far, no boundaries, people who act as if theyre above bias/other human things/etc, ‘weak’ personalities, people who just escalate her rather than grounding her out a bit, people who take advantage of other people’s feelings, people who intentionally hurt others, sadistic qualities, overt self-flagellation, cattiness over men in women, men who are nasty towards women, infidelity, lack of loyalty, promise breaking, people who claim to care past a polite level but don’t.

...she can take any of those in doses, and she’s very willing to admit that no one is perfect -- and she’s sure she expresses some of those herself, sometimes.

24. How quick is your character to trust someone else?

weird question for ebull.

trust is a strange thing for this gal. when ebull uses the word ‘trust,’ she means she has an expectation. for instance, she trusts someone named “bigdragonfucker42069″ to be kind of unbearable in the team’s groupchat. she makes these kinds of judgments very quickly, and can be said to ‘trust’ every single member of her class -- such as, she trusts veronica to come into a trial logically and get exasperated by any court theatric, and she trusts masashi to say little in trial but to be marginally sensible when he gives ideas.

most of these expectations do include trust for being alone together with them, sometimes during motives, because she trusts people to not go after one of the clearly athletic people who could phone a friend and have backup in minutes. shit like that.

this doesn’t mean, however, that she trusts people in a traditional sense -- and it goes in negative ways -- like she trusts that there are maybe two people that, even before the game was revealed as a vr, would give a shit if she died beyond ‘fuck now we lost someone who does shit.’ it doesnt always work to her self image’s favor!

for a more traditional trust -- like trusting with emotional intimacy... um.

....

that takes. a long time.

...a very long time. and you have to pass shittests.

25. How quick is your character to suspect someone else? Does this change if they are close with that person?

quick to suspect, slow to solidify -- if that makes sense. she doesn’t put much above just about anyone, but she’s willing to see reason or be proven wrong, and is pretty gracious when this is done.

doesn’t change a damn bit if she’s close to someone, but her um. reaction. might be a lil different.

26. How does your character behave around children?

she loves kids so much and is eager to teach them things, show them things, the whole bit. god. she loves kids. easiest way to get her to genuinely smile is to bring a damn toddler around her.

27. How does your character normally deal with confrontation?

eagerly, but levelly. she doesn’t shy away from much, but she’s more looking to compromise or do whatever suits the group best than whatever interests she might have.

she finds she does get a lil excited at ‘locking horns’ with people, though. so to speak.

28. How quick or slow is your character to resort to physical violence in a confrontation?

depends entirely on the situation. usually really slow -- she’s got about three locks on herself, calm down mechanisms, ability to tone down her impulses (and her impulses are RARELY ‘hurt someone’) -- but she does have. big. no-nos.

if any of those no-nos are touched she kind of goes blank white and will get violent without warning. these things don’t really happen in real life though so she’s usually safe.

29. What did your character dream of being or doing as a child? Did that dream come true?

she really wanted to be the first female mlb baseball star. died when she was about nine because it felt really unattainable, and she’d rather... accept her lot in life than try hard for something and fail that badly (oops). now it’s too late to do anything about it even if she wanted to so she considers this a success in some way.

she isn’t here to make waves or so she says. she doesn’t talk about this much but she does still love The Sport.

30. What does your character find repulsive or disgusting?

people who use other people’s feelings against them, or abuse the trust other people have in them for their own gain. people who lie in relationships. cheaters. people who could give a shit if they hurt someone they claim to care about.

31. Describe a scenario in which your character feels most comfortable.

sitting with her family in their country home for their week alone together. having only a few homework assignments to do, about to go on a walk with her sister so her parents can have time alone.

32. Describe a scenario in which your character feels most uncomfortable.

she’s accidentally hurt someone she cares about -- they’re trying to act ok, but she can tell that they’re upset and that their trust in her took a hit. she has no way to really apologize -- no way to fix it quickly. she’s alone in her room, trying not to dwell on it but finding it impossible. it’s cold.

33. In the face of criticism, is your character defensive, self-deprecating, or willing to improve?

always always always willing to improve. she takes all crit pretty well and never takes things personally. maybe to a fault.

34. Is your character more likely to keep trying a solution/method that didn’t work the first time, or immediately move on to a different solution/method?

not only does she immediately move on to a different method, but she mapped that method out mentally around the middle-mark of her first attempt, making it easier to jump into. ebull has never seen the point in trying things over and over again in desperation, and is always looking for new ways around something. she’s adaptable in almost every sense, and doesn’t feel too bad about failure the first dozen of times as long as she eventually settles on an answer.

this sometimes leads to some rather unconventional solutions but you know.

35. How does your character behave around people they like?

ummm this is really dependent on the person, her intentions with the person, and their overall ‘relationship chemistry.’

ebull is extremely adaptable and finds it easy to go along with what other people need or desire in a relationship -- and therefore most of the time, if she likes a person, she tends to turn into some kind of balancing act. she’ll also seek their company in her own ways!

it diverges a little between her intending for a friendship and her intending for a lover, however. if ebull wants to have someone as a friend, she tends to spoil them -- to get into their interests a bit and starts to joke around early. friends also get clued into her feelings and her background almost readily, and she’s more willing to explain herself or get into the things she likes (or even reveal embarrassing tidbits about herself) with people she feels mostly platonic towards.

if ebull intends to try to date someone, she um.

does her best to act absolutely detached from them. if at all possible. she shields any information about herself behind seven proxies of coyness. she tries to turn every conversation into something about what the other person wants or their feelings rather than her own. she gives little, coy compliments -- winking nudges of her interest -- but absolutely doesn’t invite the chance to get closer. above all else, she tries to remain mysterious.

...it’s a lot easier to be her friend. or like. go from friend=>lover because holy shit is her dating scheme a pain in the ass.

36. How does your character behave around people they dislike?

depends on if this is a business/pleasure relationship. in business, or for similar things (like a family her parents are trying to impress), ebull is remarkably good at acting at least interested in and polite towards other people. she’s very willing to be or act compassionate even to people she detests, as she finds that there’s too much emotional energy used up by being mad or trying to behave anti-socially around someone she has to be around. ebull values group cohesion and effort above most else, and finds that she starts causing issues by gaining attitudes.

if she has to be alone with someone she dislikes, she’ll smile politely, giggle at all their jokes, shrug her shoulders a lot, and move on quickly. mostly you can tell if she dislikes you if she’s consistently trying to avoid speaking with you, and doesn’t coyly hint at things.

37. Is your character more concerned with defending their honor, or protecting their status?

she finds these two are almost irreparably related, and likely couldnt choose between the two. mostly because she’s more interested in just letting her actions speak for her, rather than get into fights over if she’s a good leader or deserves her position or anything. it’s counter-productive to focus on either of these.

38. Is your character more likely to remove a problem/threat, or remove themselves from a problem/threat?

weirdly enough she will usually just remove herself and her healers, if at all possible. that, or try to calm the problem/threat or work around it -- rather than remove it entirely. she’s not afraid of confrontation, but finds being quick to jump doesnt tend to look good.

39. Has your character ever been bitten by an animal? How were they affected (or unaffected)?

nope! ebull doesn’t tend to deal with animals often.

40. How does your character treat people in service jobs?

politely, doesn’t tend to seem entirely bothered by slip ups or the like. the type of person who notices that something is going wrong in the kitchen or her waiter seems frazzled and responds with “im in no rush, so take your time” or merely steers the dinner conversation away from how hungry people are into something more productive. tips well.

41. Does your character feel that they deserve to have what they want, whether it be material or abstract, or do they feel they must earn it first?

earn it, fullstop. and this includes things that people don’t traditionally associate with being earned -- like a good partner, for instance. she detests when people demand or act deserving of things like other people’s respect, time, sympathy, or effort without giving a good reason. this is partly why she’s not easy to phase even in the game when things go badly, because it’s easy for her to rationalize that she must have done something to disrupt other people’s trust in her -- and therefore lost her standing for their attention.

she has never, ever assumed that she deserves something just for being there or showing up -- and finds that when things are just given freely, she gets a little anxious. usually she assumes some ulterior motive.

42. Has your character ever had a parental figure who was not related to them?

nah!

um unless you count 12 year olds on youtube who love her tanking videos, no.

44. How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it?

if it’s by text to a person she’s friendly with and has no intention of ever dating? super easy. “ilyyyyyy” and shit, sometimes cheeky. she can also use the term ‘love’ very indiscriminately, as one of her more charming speaking tics.

any other circumstance? hoo boy. she can think of no harder phrase to utter -- and this is coming from a gal who refuses to make first moves or say things in a non-delicate manner.

she finds phrases like ‘i love you’ way too fucking vulnerable to be said lightly -- and has to be absolutely sure before saying it. because she fears not having her feelings reciprocated over most things, ebull will NEVER say it first, even if that means it takes years to exchange the phrase. she’s also the type of person who could hear someone else say it in earnest and feel only uncomfortable -- if she doesn’t feel the same way. rather than fake her feelings and return it, she’d find coy, cute ways to brush it off. she doesn’t take this shit lightly and has determined ‘i love you’ to be something said only with absolute certainty.

also if you say it too fast or in a position she thinks is kind of manipulative (such as saying it for the first time to her as you’re attempting to get next stage intimate), she’ll probably get disgusted at you for faking your feelings in an attempt to make her put her guard down and that’s a break up.

so yeah if she says it to you out loud, platonic or romantic? she means the hell out of it. also it probably embarrassed her to say and she might be close to crying.

45. What does your character believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?

ebull is a buddhist and is therefore ‘covered’ when it comes to the afterlife -- so she doesnt really fear what will happen to her on paper. off of paper she’s kind of still a bit weirdly superstitious and it’s a meld of traditional worries on top of bizarre concepts like american ghost hunting shows. she’s kind of superstitious and willing to believe a lot of things -- especially things that can’t be especially disproven -- and can consolidate a world where most people reincarnate but maybe christians or something all turn into ghosts, and--

she also quietly believes in cute sounding myths, or old adages like “what will be will be” which she finds strangely comforting. most things all point to her still being accounted for in the afterlife.

her big fear associated with death is leaving people she loves behind -- or how they’ll do without her there. she doesnt want people she loves to dwell on her being gone.

Exploring the Connections Between Your Social Life and Your Financial Life

This is the seventh entry in an eight part series exploring the connections between your finances and other areas of your life. A few weeks ago, I started a series exploring the connections between personal finance and the other spheres of my life. The first entry covered the connections between ones physical life and financial life, the second entry covered the connections between ones mental and spiritual life and financial life, the third entry covered the connections between ones intellectual life and financial life, the fourth entry covered the connections between ones marital life and financial life, the fifth entry covered the connections between ones parental life and financial life, the sixth entry covered the connections between ones professional life and financial life, and today were looking at ones social life and financial life. As noted in the first entry, I tend to view life as a bunch of spheres, or areas of focus. I really like Michael Hyatts list of nine such spheres: physical, mental/spiritual, intellectual, social, marital, parental, avocational (hobbies), vocational, and financial they cover much of what life is all about. Ive come to view these spheres as deeply interconnected, in that success in one sphere is usually linked in some significant ways to success in other spheres (and failures are similarly connected) and that knowing the connections can help people figure out how to succeed in both areas at once. Today, were going to look at the social sphere and how it connects to ones financial life. What Is Social Life? Social life simply refers to the time you spend with other people simply because you enjoy spending time with them and get value out of that time. It encompasses time spent with family, time spent with friends, and time spent in situations where youre getting to know people. This might seem like a common sense definition, but theres actually a lot going on here. Does social media count here? Does interacting with someone online count as actual social behavior? If so, is it weakly social? For me, digital communication with people really only counts as social if its oriented toward spending actual face to face time with that person in the future. For example, if Im looking at a Facebook picture of someone I havent seen in ten years, thats not really social, but if Im talking to someone on Twitter about a game night were going to have next week, thats definitely social. There are many deep connections between ones social life and ones financial life. Here are a few of the key ones. Not having a social life leads to negative health consequences and significant expenses. The social sphere tends to be one of the two areas of life (along with avocational) where people often let it dwindle until its almost gone, then lament the disappearance of that sphere. People are more lonely today than they have been in centuries (if not ever) and that decay of social lives has a lot of profound negative health consequences. In short, if you allow your social life to drift away because youre too engrossed in other areas of life, youll likely find at some point that youre struggling with loneliness, and persistent loneliness is very problematic for ones physical and mental health over the long term. Maintaining your social sphere inherently helps maintain your physical and mental health spheres, which in turn helps your financial life. Your social circle deeply influences your spending choices. Its often said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Im not quite sure thats true, but I do believe that our closest friends and family members have a large impact on how we view the world, what things were exposed to, and what things we think about. Thus, by extension, our social lives impact our financial lives by the spending choices were guided to (or away from) by our social influences. I personally find it very valuable to cultivate social relationships with people who encourage me to make smart spending choices. Friends who are always nudging me to spend have a profound negative impact on my financial life, whereas friends whose company I can enjoy without any spending pressure tend to have a lifting effect on my finances. Friends who are frugal by nature improve my own frugality; big spending friends nudge me toward spending too much myself. We can get trapped in a desire to spend money to impress our friends and acquaintances, often those outside of our most immediate social circle. We want to keep up with the Joneses. We want to have the burst of social cachet that comes with having the cool new thing. We want to be the nicely dressed one in the group, or at least not be the one that is talked about as being shabby. In truth, this is just the spotlight effect in action; because we think about ourselves so much, we over-assume how much others think about us. Yet, many of us find ourselves influenced by these thoughts, overinflating what others might think of us. Its good practice to stop worrying what other people think and instead behave as we would like to be treated, but thats often easier said than done. Friends can help greatly when you need to borrow something or have a major task to accomplish (like moving). Friends can be incredibly useful when you need something in a pinch. Whether its a cup of sugar, a foot in the door at a job, a truck to haul a couch, or an afternoon of help getting ready to move, friends can make all the difference and keep you from spending money on services and products (and theyll likely make the activity more interesting anyway). Naturally, this comes with some expectation of reciprocation, so it means taking on a helpful role in the lives of friends as well. Here are five low cost strategies I use for maintaining and improving my own social life. Strategy #1 Keep Room in Your Life for Social Activity As I noted earlier, it can be very easy to let our social life dwindle away in the face of all of the demands of our other spheres of life. Our health, our jobs, our marriages, our immediate family all of that stuff often takes priority over having a good social life, and so well steal time here and time there from our friends and social connections until, one day, we wake up and realize those connections have dwindled away, and were feeling lonely. Not only is loneliness a bad destination, we also miss out on a lot of fulfillment along the path to loneliness if we let our social lives be sacrificed at the altar of career and family and Netflix and smartphones. Dont let that happen. Block off time on your calendar each week for social events. Make sure youre doing at least something that involves interacting face to face with people that you dont have to interact with (meaning people outside of your professional, marital, and parental spheres). It can be anything you want it to be. It can be a dinner party. It can be a dinner out with friends. It can be a community event. It can be a meeting of a group or organization of some kind. It just needs to be something where you go there with the intent of interacting with others (or people come to you with the intent of interacting). Do this on a weekly basis at the absolute very least, and ideally more often than that. More importantly, block off time on your calendar for these things, and do that each week. Dont let these things slide by, because thats a direct road to a dwindling and disappearing social life and a bout with loneliness. If I look ahead at the next few days and dont have something social on it, Im either looking at the community calendar or Im contacting some friends so that theres something social on there. Strategy #2 Be Proactive in Terms of Meeting People While people might come to you socially by calling you up and texting you and contacting you and inviting you, you cant rely on that for social contact. Its not reliable, and many friendships will fade quickly if you rely on it due to short term scheduling difficulties, introverted natures, missed communications, and so on. If you want to have a social life, you have to be proactive in terms of meeting people (to begin the process of building new friendships) and also maintaining the friendships you have. You cant just expect people to come to you. You cant expect everyone to always have the ideas and always ask you. You cant expect people to keep asking if you have to say no with any regularity. It simply wont happen outside of maybe one or two super close friends. Theyll get the vibe that you dont want to associate with them any more and theyll fade out rather quickly. If you want to grow your social circle and your social life, those people are not going to come knocking on your door. Theyre not going to run into you on the sidewalk. You have to go out there and find them. For me, this means being involved in the community. This means putting in the work to find groups to be a part of so that I have people with at least some common interest to associate with. This means putting away my introverted tendencies and actually talking to new people, which can be hard for me. Its not easy. Its much easier to just look at my phone or read a book. Its also got a high failure rate I dont just go to one event and click with tons of people and suddenly have tons of friends. At the same time, its incredibly rewarding. I have more good friends at this point in my life than I ever have, as well as more acquaintances and people I know and who know me. Thats not a typical thing for an American male approaching middle age. How does this happen? Its simple, and it has just a few pieces to it. First of all, I go to lots of community events that seem interesting to me, and I dont go there with the intent to just stand around. I go to participate. I go to talk to people because I know that the other people there are like-minded and have at least some overlap with me (we live in roughly the same area and have at least some overlapping interests). I dive into lots of little sub-groups. Second, when I go there, I make it a point to be social. I use everything Ive learned from Dale Carnegie (heres a summary) and make a sincere effort to get to know people. If I click at all with someone, I usually find them on social media and follow up in the next day or two with something meaningful (more than just HI! REMEMBER ME!?). The vast majority of people I meet dont click deeply, and thats fine. Over time, some of those people do grow into friendly acquaintances and sometimes eventually blossom into friendships. The key is to find groups and community events youre comfortable with and enjoy. Strategy #3 Plan the Social Events and Invite People To Go One thing Ive found is that social contact sometimes fades because no one takes the initiative to plan anything. Often, this is due to a sense of misguided politeness as they feel like they dont want to push whatever idea they have on others, and sometimes its due to a sense of being overly busy and feeling overwhelmed. Quite often, people just want a clear invitation and a sense that theyre personally invited and wanted at the event. If you want to be social, be that person that starts the event. Come up with something to do and invite people to it. Make the plans, so that its just a matter of the other people showing up. Want to have a game day? Plan one, set a date, invite some people. Want to have a dinner party? Plan one, set a date, invite some people. Want to have a movie night? Plan one, set a date, invite some people. Sure, some will say no. Sure, some others might just no-show. Thats going to happen, and its usually not a slight to you. Forgive it to an extent, unless it becomes a long streak of nos or no-shows, in which case you might want to just do something with that person one on one. Dont just assume that the person doesnt want to be friends with you any more instead, assume that the person is struggling with something, because thats much more often the case, or maybe theyre just disorganized. Let them show you that the friendship is over directly if thats the direction they want to go on dont just assume that it is because the other person has some challenge in their life. You wont always have to do this well, for some friends you might because theyre apprehensive about the planning for some reason but youre almost always better off picking the thing and the time and the place and just inviting people rather than trying to get everyone to fish for ideas. Step up and be the social leader. Strategy #4 Make One-on-One Contact and Catching Up with Friends Into a Routine Over the course of every few months, I make it a goal to touch base in some direct one-on-one way with everyone in my social circle. Ill send them a one on one text just checking in on them (a Hey, how you doin? kind of thing) or Ill stop by some place where I know theyll be and have a chat with them or Ill plan on having lunch with them. My goal with these things isnt to talk about myself, but to find out how theyre doing, especially if I havent seen them lately. Are they doing okay? Whats going on in their life? Do they maybe need someone to talk to? Friendships ebb and flow all the time, but its easy for a friendship to just fade away not due to intent, but due to a natural low point in the relationship when youre both busy with other things at the moment. Maintaining that thread keeps the friendship alive and allows it to bloom again in the future, and it quite often will. As I write this, I cant help but think of several friendships in my life for which this is true. I have friends that live far away that I contact fairly regularly in a deliberate one-on-one fashion, just to see how theyre doing. I can also think of several cases where friendships that would have otherwise faded gradually grew into something deeply valuable again. I do this rather mechanically by using smartphone reminders and such. I dont want to accidentally forget about a friend and let that friendship die, so I set a reminder to keep in touch every month or every other month. My phone tells me to get in touch with Person X again and then I follow through. It works really well. Strategy #5 When a Friend or Acquaintance Needs Help, Do It (Especially If Its a Multiplier) If a friend needs help and I can reasonably give that help, I give it, no questions asked. I dont expect anything in return. Dont I feel used or unappreciated? Nope, not a bit. I choose to help. It is my choice. No one is making me do it. I would feel used if I was forced or manipulated into it, but thats a different situation entirely. What I find is that, if I use this policy, a lot of simultaneous good things happen. For starters, that friend that Im helping is almost always in a better place because of my help. Their life is better, and a rising tide lifts all boats. That friend is usually appreciative, and the friendship we have is strengthened because of it. The opportunity to help is often fun, and it usually feels good. That friend usually thinks highly of me, and that often comes up when Im not around. Again, this isnt an always thing, but its a usually thing. A friend that youve helped without any need of reciprocation is usually going to say good stuff about you when youre not there. Also, when I do need help and send out a call for it, a lot of people are willing to help me because they know Ive jumped up to help them in the past. Again, this isnt a universal thing, but if I help ten friends and then I need help, Im likely to get an offer from at least a few of them. Its worth noting that the best opportunities to help friends are what I call multipliers. Those are situations where the value of the help to your friend is many multiples of what it cost you to help. For example, spending a few hours helping your friend move boxes so they dont have to hire a moving service when they give you some pizza and a drink and you have some laughs and conversation together is a big win. Putting in a good word for a friend when theyre trying to get a job is a big win. Giving a key piece of advice regarding something you know a lot about is a big win. Those should always be given, as it lifts your friends boat quite high with little effort from you. Final Thoughts Your social life is a valuable part of your personal happiness, as well as a key support for your physical and mental health. It has many connections to your financial life as well. Thus, supporting your social life is incredibly important. The big ingredients in a healthy social life are time and attention. Set aside some time and some attention for your social relationships and youll find that youre paid back with far more value that you ever would have expected. On Sunday, Fleiss received information that the aforementioned historic notice would be going down on Monday nights episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live . Reality Steve was the first website to report that Kimmel would be sharing the news of Lindsays long-awaited throwing. LA Times reporter Amy Kaufman too vouched for the notice, tweeting on Friday that, I exactly found out a piece of information that draws me 100% certain that [ email protected] is the next Bachelorette.
