OK, seriously, it's been 5 years of keeping this with me, but I think it's been too long and I need to get it out:

Gray isn't white skinned. Gray isn't a "white guy".

Whithe person is Tigress, Maelstrom, Paper Star, Chase Devineaux, Julie Argent, Zach and Ivy.

But Gray isn't. Gray has a "beige" skin tone, it's an almost orange skin tone. He isn't as white as other characters that if you put them in the light they almost shine like a Twilight's vampire.

And I have never understood why some call him "white man" because throughout the entire series it's very clear that he isn't. Yeah, ok, he's not brown, but he isn't white either. In Spanish we have a term called "apiñonado" (a middle term between white and brown, which people who are a mix between an indigenous person and someone with white skin tend to have. You know, the consequences of miscegenation)

Which has sometimes led me to think that Gray is a person with Aboriginal roots (that's another topic. And although I have no proof, I have no doubt either.)

Even here I leave you the best proof. In a place with little light. Chase and Gray. Chase is white, not Gray!

And well, I could put more proof, but I think these are the clearest. I'm not mad at anyone, but I'm not going to understand why even Gray's wiki says "Skin: white" when it's VERY obvious that it's not, and there have always been other terms to describe different skin tones, not just "black and white"

do you ever just get so exhausted by the same characterization of characters in fanfic that you have to binge read hannigram fics??

like fanfic is riddled with characters wrestling with their morality and making sure they’re good people and if they even do something slightly morally wrong they’ll beg for forgiveness and apologize over and over again through stumbled rambling. and the characters feel guilty about the dumbest fucking shit like having sexual fantasies about someone and they spiral because “it’s not right and they don’t have the right to have sexual fantasies about that person”. and the romances are painfully all healthy and sweet and they have conversations about everything in depth.

like god fanfic is so filled with morality it can just be exhausting and sometimes i just need to read about two men who are unapologetic about how toxic they are and use murder and manipulation as foreplay.

i want to talk about randall tier

hannibal draws a lot of inspiration from manhunter (1986), which was the first film adaptation of the hannibal books, and i want to talk specifically about the scene where randall crashes through will's window, because it derives from a scene in manhunter. i am going to compare these two scenes, and use this to further my discussion of hannibal, which will be the focus of this. (there is a TLDR at the end of this!)

in manhunter, at the end of the movie, will runs and crashes through dolarhyde's window, shattering it and directly jumping into a fight with him. now, there is a copious amount of imagery in manhunter depicting will talking to his reflection in glass, windows, etc as if his reflection is dolarhyde. we get the sense that dolarhyde is inside of will’s head, and they start to blur as will has to relate and empathize more and more with dolarhyde to catch him. 

will crashing through the window is him meeting the darkest parts of himself face-to-face – now, he and dolarhyde are on the same side of the glass. will kills dolarhyde, which represents will overcoming (or, at least, suppressing) his violent urges and the turmoil that comes with understanding killers so deeply.

so, will crashing through the glass to meet dolarhyde is him meeting the ‘bad’ part of himself, the part that understands killers and lets them inside of his head, and by killing dolarhyde, he defeats this darker part of himself. will graham, in typical 80s fashion, ends the movie stable in his morality and can return to his heterosexual family life and watch the sunset with his wife and child.

the scene in hannibal is a bit different. instead of the identity parallel being between will and dolarhyde, it is between will and randall tier. randall is (if i am not mistaken) the first patient of hannibal’s we meet that has undergone his “therapy” and is considered a success. this is when we fully start to grasp what it is that hannibal does with his “therapy.” and what will could Become if he accepted hannibal's guidance.

instead of solely will’s violent urges, like dolarhyde represented in manhunter, randall tier represents, in a way, what will could be: a 'balanced' person who embraces his violence and becomes one with it. randall tier has the same violent urges and the dissonance in his identity that will has, but he accepts it, embraces it, and revels in what he is. 

so, when randall crashing through will’s window, will not only comes face to face with himself, but the Higher Self that hannibal is guiding him to Become. this is why randall is depicted as the raven stag, and then the stag man: will is forced to come face to face with who hannibal is guiding him to be, hannibal's influence, and has to confront how to handle his violent urges once again by being forced to kill in self defense. however, his fight with randall does not represent him overcoming these violent urges, as was in manhunter. the fight does actually facilitate will’s Becoming. will throws his shotgun away and chooses to use his hands to kill randall, as hannibal suggested. through Will’s fight with and murder of randall tier, he actually becomes closer to his Higher Self and his Becoming.

this is furthered by will's choice to make randall tier into a tableau. will’s first tableau. in will’s pendulum conversation with randall, it is made even clearer: will says “you forced me to kill you” and randall replies “i didn’t force you to enjoy it.” !!!!!

TLDR: in manhunter, will crashes through the window to meet a man who represents the darkest parts of himself. by killing dolarhyde, will defeats this dark part of himself and fortifies his sense of morality. hannibal flips this completely around. in hannibal, randall crashes through will’s window. will comes face to face with him, who, in a sense, represents his Higher Self and who will could be if he accepted hannibal's guidance. his fight with randall marks the start of him beginning to embrace this intimate violence hannibal has been talking about. by killing and displaying randall in a tableau, will revels in his violent urges by killing him with his hands and enjoying it and becomes closer to his Higher Self and his Becoming. instead of will overcoming his violent urges through this fight between a him and a representation of his violence like in manhunter, will killing randall fuels these urges.

Leon’s wince turns into a wry smile. “Don't feel obligated laugh at my terrible jokes, it’s okay, I won’t feel bad.”

“No, it’s…” Ashley thinks for a second. It isn’t as hard to catch a breath. “It helps?”

“Great, my weird sense of humor is rubbing off on you.” Leon glances skywards. “Yet another thing that your dad’s probably not gonna like. 

Ashley snorts. “I’m an adult, he won’t care.”

“Hm, won’t he?” Leon asks, grimacing. “He’s gonna think I am a bad influence— hell, I am a bad influence.”

“As long as I don’t start swearing. He doesn’t like it when people swear.”

“Oh, shit, really?” Leon asks, eyebrows raised. “Thank god he’s not listening to this, fuck.”

Ashley laughs out loud. Leon grins. How does he do that so effortlessly? Is comforting hysterical girls part of his training?

“I’m glad you think I’m funny; I don’t think Hunnigan has cracked a single smile and I’ve been talking to her for hours.”

“That’s because you’re not funny, Condor,” Hunnigan says, interrupting her silence.

Leon’s shock at her comment might be fake, but it still makes Ashley giggle.

“Ashley is laughing, I must be sorta funny,” Leon argues.

“Don’t quit your day job, Condor.” Hunnigan replies, voice scathingly dry.

Anyway! Maybe you guys didn’t know this about me, but I love the Sentimonster Theory Canon. I really do. Crazy, I know!

I think if people picked up on it so early, it might be because it was planned from beginning. But I also think it shouldn’t matter, because a writing team who is ready to make changes to their story to make it more meaningful is doing a great job.

I think it ties the entire plot and themes of the show together, and tells a wonderful story about overcoming child abuse through the power of love (always so strong). I think it was crafted specifically for people who have felt othered their entire lives; I think it gave us representation (AH) we may never have gotten anywhere else, and that it is especially important that this narrative is available to young fans, who make up Miraculous’ core audience. I think it means something to people.

I think our fandom niche is small, but filled with people from all horizons, with the craziest, coolest, most diverse ideas. It is home to some of the most talented artists and writers I know, who I am proud to call my friends; it inspires others to be bold, to grab their pen or watercolours or laptop, and create something of their own for the first time.

I think Felix deserves to be a hero and Adrien deserves to go apeshit. I think Kagami deserves to be adored. I think their story isn’t perfect. I think it is a wonderful work of love.
