I often see people question why Nori wasn't considered for the Burglar (in the movie), considering the crux of his character was being a thief, and I've seen plenty of creative explanations as to why that is the case - But I think the easiest explanation here is... Nori just didn't WANT to. My guy already joined the the Quest to avoid facing the consequences of petty thievery, there's no way he's going to face A DRAGON

So I rewrote the Battle of the Five Armies for my Everyone Lives AU because yes I’m still in denial and no you can’t stop me
• Everything up to Fíli getting captured is the same
• Fíli is caught by Azog and held out over the cliff. Kíli is below in the nook. While Azog is giving his speech, Kíli shoots him from below in the wrist, causing him to let go of Fíli. Fíli falls to the ground, onto Kíli, breaking his fall, who drags him into the nook and hides him as he tends to his brother’s wounds. Fíli regains his strength after a short moment and, despite Kíli’s better judgement, Fíli gets up, and races back to the top, calling for Kíli to follow.
• The two brothers fight countless orcs as they climb the stairs of Ravenhill, searching for Thorin. Once they come upon the plateau of ice, they find Bilbo weeping over Thorin as they speak.
• Kíli shuts down, thinking it is too late, but Fíli remembers something crucial. Back in Lake-town, he had pocketed a pouch of Kingsfoil in case his brother’s wounds hadn’t truly healed. With it was a messily-written note of Tauriel’s incantation written out phonetically.
• “I will not let you go, uncle. Not today. It is not your time. We will have a great feast tonight and will walk within the halls of Erebor among our kin. I cannot walk there without you.” - Fíli to Thorin as he kneels down opposite Bilbo, preparing the Kingsfoil. He rips open Thorin’s shirt, revealing the weeping wound before pressing the mixture into it. Thorin lets out a roar of pain but Kíli snaps to attention and runs to hold him down to stop his thrashing. Bilbo grabs Thorin’s hand with both of his, pressing his forehead against the bloodied knuckles, whispering pleas for him to hold on.
• The Kingsfoil incantation only partially works due to Fíli being a novice in elven spells, however it buys them time for Gandalf to get there and finish the spell properly.
• Thorin is taken to the medical hut where he regains his strength for the next week despite his refusal and insistence that he is fine. Bilbo eventually gets through to him and Thorin gives in, allowing the healers to aide him.
• Thorin does not remember what happened when he had succumbed to the dragon sickness, it is only when Bilbo flinches at a sudden movement of his when he is getting frustrated that Bilbo realises Thorin does not remember. Bilbo reluctantly tells him the truth when Thorin demands to know what he did wrong.
• Thorin never forgives himself for his actions, even going so far as to denying his birthright and banishing himself from Erebor. He gives the crown to Fíli who does not accept it, choosing to go with him for Thorin is more important to Fíli than ruling. Kíli never wanted the crown and so the brothers appoint Dain as the rightful king for they would not have prevailed without him.
• Thorin and Bilbo part ways, Bilbo returning to Bag End unsure if he will ever see Thorin again because despite what happened, he never blamed Thorin for it was the fault of the dragon sickness and not his own mind.
• After about a year, Bilbo hears a knock at his door. He is greeted with a very nervous Thorin, quite a juxtaposition from his usual stoic nature. Bilbo doesn’t believe his eyes, convinced that he is dreaming. Thorin cannot help but whisper, “Bilbo…” before engulfing the hobbit in a hug.
• Thorin rambles on a whole poetic speech about how he does not deserve redemption for his actions and he simply came to apologise. Bilbo takes Thorin’s face in his hands, pulling him down to eye level.
• “Stop it. Just stop it, you giant oaf. I forgive you. You never let me speak my mind after the battle. I never blamed you, Thorin. I never have and I never will. It was that bloody dragon, not you. I stand by my word when I say that I am glad that I have shared in your perils. You are more than any Baggins deserves.”

The Rings of Power Liveblog: “Shadow of the Past” (Episode 1)
Two years late, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided I had to see this thing for myself ahead of the second season premiere…spoiler: I didn’t hate it.
I’m not going to gripe about these children looking decidedly human (or at least not Elvish), because I understand the limitations of using, you know—actual human children as actors. But I will question the notion of Elvish children being smug bullies.
But baby Galadriel definitely looks the part.
“It’s not going to float, it’s going to sail.” Not off to a strong start with the dialogue…
Oh, the Elf children are…throwing rocks at her paper boat? All of them? Why?? I know the behavior of Elves in the First and Second Ages tended to be less detached/noble and whatnot, but little Galadriel is literally about to punch this Elf boy…
I have so many questions about this hairstyle choice.
“We have no word for death.” Somehow, I doubt that. This is the Second Age, right? Elves had definitely already experienced death.
Why does this seem like a slightly retooled Minas Tirith design? Is this supposed to be VALINOR??? (Actually, this would be a decent Amber design…)
A very underwhelming depiction of the destruction of the Two Trees…this is what Amazon spent amlost a billion dollars on? I know they can’t accurately depict what happened because, you know, no rights to The Silmarillion, but it still underwhelmed me.
This sequence is just all so obviously CGI. While I’m no fan of the original Jackson films (sorry, I know—boo, hiss), a lot of it looks real.
“See, it’s just like that Game of Thrones spinoff you like, but with terrible CG!”
It would be so helpful if Galadriel’s voiceover told viewers that Orcs were created as a mockery of the Elves, or hinted at why Morgoth created them/why he hated the Elves. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you try to adapt a work to which you don’t have all the rights.
She is very, very pretty.
“What devilry is this?” Is that a word in Middle-earth?
Lots of Galadriel confidently assuming she knows things she can’t possibly know (for the sake of hurrying the story/journey along, I guess)…if only the streaming services didn’t limit themselves to eight or ten episodes and gave their stories room to breathe!
Anyone watching who’s never read The Silmarillion (or even the trilogy): who the fuck is Morgoth? What are the Trees?? What year is it??? What’s going on here??!? Again, the huge problem of adapting a larger story/universe when you only have partial rights…
Insert obligatory video game-esque troll battle that’s also a callback to the Moria scenes of the FOTR film. You can use the bathroom here and miss nothing.
Some proto-Hobbits, because why not? I did like the “hidden village” reveal thing, though!
I kind of love them?
There’s a lot to be said for the charm and appeal of the Shire from an audience perspective, the comfort of it (which is why the Scourging of the Shire is so thematically important and excising it was an irredeemable sin…but I digress), so I actually 100% understand why they included these guys. TTT is by far the bleakest book of the trilogy, my least-favorite, and the lack of the Shire is a huge reason why.
23 years later and I’m still not over the utter miscasting of Hugo Weaving. Visually, this Elrond isn’t really better. Why is Elrond so damn hard to get right??? And his hair is described as black!
The best costumes a billion-dollar budget could buy?
“Elf-lords only.” Such a dignified, Elvish thing to say…
Yes, Elves could be haughty and unkind; just ask Bilbo! But Elrond is an Elf-lord. Hmm.
Also…Elrond and Galadriel appear to be approximately the same age. It doesn’t matter that Galadriel is actually much older (and his eventual mother-in-law!), because TV is such a visual medium.
This is actually a larger overall problem. Because most of The Lord of the Rings takes place over the course of one year, an adaptation doesn’t need to hold the audience’s hand regarding the passage of time. But in this case, as Galadriel’s narration too-briefly mentions, events are taking place across hundreds and even thousands of years. Elves like Galadriel are significantly older than others, like Elrond, but unless you tell the audience that, they won’t know, and the story loses something as a result.
Even though this design is clearly based on Rivendell in the Jackson films, it is quite lovely.
Pretty!!!
How do Galadriel and Elrond know each other? They seem close. Inquiring minds want to know!
The content and context of this scene is meaningless, but I don’t care—it’s just so pretty!
Even though I know they get worse, for now I don’t really mind the proto-Hobbits. They’re obviously not Tolkien, but they’re an homage, and they’re fun/visually appealing.
The casting director gets a D+ for the male Elves. (Then again, they were poorly-cast in the Jackson films too.)
“And as a reward, you will all be exiled!” lmfao. Being shipped off to Valinor doesn’t seem like much of a punishment, though. Where do I volunteer?
Still, it makes sense that Galadriel, who (correctly!) believes Sauron to still be alive and a threat and who wishes to avenge her brother, would be upset about this. They’ve changed her backstory/motivations—which I hate—but her attitude does track with those changes.
Nuns??
This set design is magical, no notes.
Luthien??
She really is perfectly cast.
Elrond, one of the wisest and kindest of all the Elves, is being written as some smug royal enforcer. Just like the Jackson films wrote him as a grumpy, condescending overprotective dad. Sigh.
“[Evil] waits. And at the moment of our complacency, it blinds us.” I mean…yeah, that’s basically how it goes down in Middle-earth. Repeatedly.
Not Elrond mansplaining about Valinor to someone who was literally born there…
None of these people look like Elves.
“I’m going with you!” But why?!? This lady is a healer with a youngish son still dependent on her at home!!!
I really hate them saying “mum” instead of “ma” or “mama” or something similar. (I’d also hate it if they were saying “mom,” to be clear. It’s just so modern-sounding and breaks any immersion they’ve built so far.)
Wow, the hilt of a broken sword with Sauron’s symbol on it… Generic “halfling” characters I can enjoy as a homage. This is lazy writing. And see? I knew her son needed adult supervision. (It’s also a ripoff of Pippin and the Palantir.)
(muttering) None of these people look—oh, forget it.
Elves don’t age as Men do (or age extremely slowly/imperceptibly), so what’s going on with this dude?
Gorgeous, all.
Ents???
Galadriel jumping off of the ship and just…floating there in the middle of the sea is as silly as the naysayers said it would be. However, I thought the scene leading up to it was fairly well-executed, though I wish they’d done a better job animating the rain of silver glass that leads into Valinor…that image has always resonated with me.
The Good:
Many absolutely stunning visuals thanks to great set design (with Valinor of all places somehow being the least-impressive!) and, apart from some cheap/underwhelming looks, costume design that varies from good to great
A solid score that seems to be trying a little bit too hard to mimic Howard Shore’s from the films
Morfydd Clark, in her entirety; the writing for Galadriel might be awful in upcoming episodes, but her casting was inspired
I find the Harfoots whimsically charming, at least so far, especially Nori.
The use of Tolkienesque maps to indicate location changes
An attempt was clearly made, in this episode if nowhere else, to pay homage to the source material, even the source material they don’t have the rights to use outright (the Two Trees, Morgoth, perhaps Luthien)…it’s better than nothing.
The Bad
Every single male Elf is miscast; yes, I said every single one, from Galadriel’s brother to Elrond to the OC Arondir. Gil-galad and Celebrimbor look like they’re in their late 40s/50s, at best, and idk…there’s nothing “Elvish” or “ageless” about any of the male actors playing Elves. (Full disclosure: I don’t remember being impressed by the male Elves in the Jackson films, either.) I also saw someone say that Gil-galad looks like Liam Neeson in a mullet, and now I can’t unsee that.
Some really clunky dialogue
Lack of adequate backstory/exposition…but exposition in an adaptation like this is hard, because most of it is contained in The Silmarillion, for which they don’t own the rights.
Building on that theme, I appreciate the idea of “showing not telling,” however…did they ever tell us Galadriel’s brother name (Finrod)? Or that “the king” is Gil-galad? Or even suggest that there are a variety of different Elves in Middle-earth? A lot of people know these things, because we know Tolkien. But I’ve got to assume that a lot of others don’t. Heck, it took them until almost the end of the episode to name one of their OCs (Bronwyn).
Some worthless scenes, like Galadriel’s company fighting the “ice troll” in the mountains. Actually, the entire sequence in the mountain lair was badly-written.
I don’t care about the “forbidden romance” subplot between the OCs Arondir and Bronwyn…if they’d spent longer than a few minutes in the first episode establishing their relationship/characters, maybe I’d be more invested. (See my earlier complaint about unnecessarily short seasons—some stories need room to grow!)
Even though my criticism outweighs my praise, even though I’m a self-identified Tolkien purist, I thought this was…fine. It’s an absolute feast for the eyes, truly gorgeous to watch (even with all those woefully miscast male Elves)—visually, apart from a few moments of obvious CGI, it’s what I would expect/want from a Tolkien adaptation! My expectations aren’t high for the rest of the series. There are upcoming plot points that I know will disappoint, infuriate, and disgust me. But considering that I went into this episode expecting to loathe it, I was pleasantly surprised.
Besides, I’m going to keep watching no matter what to see more of Nori and Morfydd’s face. This also makes me want to finish The Silmarillion, which I have been starting and then “saving for later” since I was a small child.

Yell about With Good Intentions!!
How did you know I am thoroughly obsessed with this AU at this very moment??? (probably because I won't shut up about it)
YEAH, I GET TO TALK ABOUT THE DEMON AU!!!
Let's just get this over with, this fic is HUGELY Supernatural, Good Omens, and Lucifer inspired...in ways. Some have more influence than others, but look. (I got nothing else, let's talk about the fic.)
Can you believe I've been fleshing this fic out since like....July?
...
Bilbo is a known "burglar of souls" through the demon circuit he works, but has grown tired of the day-to-day operations, and increasingly tired of his superior, Smaug. He's been planning to flee for a long time now, but never had the opportunity. When the time feels right, he makes an attempt, which comes with stealing from Smaug's vaults on the way out in order to have enough of a "stash" of things to get him by.
That goes as well as you can expect, and Bilbo escapes by the skin of his teeth, and now must find some sort of safety - which he finds in the company of a monster hunter, Thorin Durin (who is very NOT happy about this).
Now, how does a demon make a deal with a hunter destined to kill him? An offer he can't refuse, of course! Thorin, reluctant to agree, has his brother's life dangled before him - Frerin died months ago on a case, and honestly, he's desperate enough to buy that, as Thorin continues to blame himself. He protects Bilbo, Bilbo eventually gives Frerin back, and that's it, that's the deal.
or...you know....is it? 👀
There's a magic ring, some soul stealing, monsters, deception, and it's a lot of fun! (I already have the first chapter done....)
“Give me three good reasons as to why I should help you.” “I'm so glad you asked,” Bilbo grinned as he shifted uncomfortably to sit up better. “You help people—” “You're not a person,” Thorin interrupted with a snarl, which was promptly ignored. “You know what I am and what I can do. I have an offer you can't refuse,” Bilbo continued, sounding so professional and matter-of-fact as if there wasn't blood oozing from the corner of his mouth with bruises decorating his skin. “And if you don't let me in, I will wake every single one of your neighbors and ensure you get evicted for a third time,” he threatened harshly, his hazel eyes locking with blues before they took on a solid inky hue. “What was it you said to me the last time we ran into one another?” Thorin mused, playfully thoughtful, even if nothing about this was playful at all. In fact, the memory of being three steps behind this demon, that had been his target far too many times, only made his blood boil beneath his skin. “Better luck next time.” (With Good Intentions, Coming later this year!)
Ask me about my WIPs!

BIO; Gloriana Moondrop
Gloriana Moondrop
Species: Hobbit
Gender: Female
Age:
Hobbit age: 35 Human: 24
Birthdate: 06/12
Hometown: the Shire
Personality:
Overall: Infj-T She is usually quiet in first impression, but she is nice and kind. Usually her demeanor is meek but she is also defensive and protective towards her friends. She loves letting others express or talk about their own kind like for instance, Legolas talking about his elven people- she is happy to listen to what he says about the lore, or in culture. In most of times, she is often curious which applies that she had read many books in the Shire. Most of the books that she has well enjoyed is astronomy and the lore that middle earth has spoken about with the constellations, history of some middle earth and cookbooks to find inspiration. Other than reading, she often enjoys drawing and writing sometimes, though she can only write on her diary and explore around the Shire for a little bit. She often bottles her emotions when she isn't feeling good though.
Backstory: I wouldn't know if she would have any backstory, for I have bits and pieces of before and how Gloriana would start her adventures within the fellowship; but this is a small bit of her backstory; Gloriana's family however, she grew as the youngest out of her brothers, when she grew up, her father was separated to Bree to take care of family members by force, so, Gloriana's mother has been separated from him unfortunately. When Gloriana grew to her teenage years, she reconnected with her father and has visited him for a few times, as well with her cousins. Most of her normal life was just cooking with her mother and her brothers though.
Appearance
Faceclaim is, Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables
(coughs except she has green eyes, some bangs and maybe a bit more chubby 🥺) Height: 3'1 After Ent drink: 3'9
Clothing:
Wedding clothing maybe? and/or hairstyles:
Friendships:
Possibly most of the fellowship is perhaps Gloriana's friends, but i can make a few info of their relationships including; Penegrine Took ; Gloriana recognized him sometimes as a neighbor from the Shire, she doesn't recognize much of him until seeing him in Rivendale, and venturing with the hobbits in the Fellowship. He first suggests her that perhaps she can steal something in mind for curiosity, eventually she dared to steal Aragorn's flask, but they ended up having conversation to each other and getting along well. Merry Bradybuck ; recognizes him as a neighbor from the Shire, she doesn't recognize much of him until seeing him in Rivendale, knowing how he was more polite and wiser than Pippin, mostly she gets along well with him, for she develops becoming a little more brave like him and Pippin. Legolas ; He at first laughs at most of the hobbits and other races, but when he had his first impression over Gloriana, he was most of the time polite, and as well... He didn't think a lady fair as her can go defend herself, he questions why she was counted to follow to a dangerous quest with them... but surprisingly he did underestimated her once he saw her defenses and her drawn weapon. Eventually he does get along with her though, Gloriana gives a listen about him talking of his own people, and the history of his kind. Gandalf ; Gloriana was in awe he was the wizard of what Bilbo's tale has been spoken about, seeing in person made her smile for she was a fan of the tale of Bilbo's story. Gandalf asks if she was sure to join them in the journey, and she agrees for she shows him her weapon, Inglessa.(Her father Hectroc gave her that from an Elven friend that gifted him). Impressed Gandalf may be, he tells her a tale about an Elven weapon in Middle earth as she listens about the tale.
Love Interest:
Aragorn ; She first met him around in the woods to Bree, almost to the night but he helps her to Bree by letting her join his ride on his horse. (Gloriana was going to Bree to meet her cousins Sasia and Valeria). Later, she joins him and the Hobbits for she realized of the danger within the Black riders. Aware of the news that the Shire is now in Hostage to Mordor's servants, she felt bad leaving her family there in the Shire.. Staying at Rivendale, she was spoken if she would join the fellowship to destroy the One ring.. (though the offer was from Aragorn). She hesitated at first, but due to the experience of self defense, and the weapon her father gave to her, she wouldn't mind to join for adventure–for she had love for exploration. During the days with the fellowship, she was slowly falling for Aragorn, though she kept bottling it inside.

Dreams into Reality
Summary: Falling asleep to the hobbit, but waking up in the Shire, how would you react?
Warnings: Eventual Smut, slow burn romance, implied/reference to self-harm, depression, self-harm. MDI
Masterlist
Thorin Oakenshield x Reader
Do you know those dreams that feel so real? I like to think I’m currently in one, a dream, but that's not the case.
I fell asleep watching one of my favorite movies, The Hobbit, which I tend to do every night, before you try to tell me how to live my life, don't, just fair warning. The hobbit brings me more comfort than I believe any human could, besides the actors in the movie.
Back to what I was saying. I fell asleep watching The Hobbit, the part at the beginning where the dwarves are throwing Bilbo's dishes around causing the little hobbit distress, but the next thing I remember is hearing a familiar voice and then hearing a crash all around me, before feeling hard ground against my back, compared to the soft comfort of my bed, as well as a heavy feeling on my chest, I look down seeing my backpack.
“What the hell…” I groan sitting up, eyes quickly searching my surroundings, “The shire… there’s no way I’m here, this is a fucking dream, or I shifted, but shifting has never given me pain like that before” I mutter looking around, quickly pulling the sleeves of my sweater down as I hear that familiar voice again.
“My dear Tayler, I’m glad you were able to make it, I was unsure if my magic would reach you.” I try to center myself, hoping that I'm only dreaming, or shifting like I normally do, but when I look down and see the clothes I fell asleep in, I know that's not the case.
I turn quickly, looking up at the wizard in front of me, “Gandalf… What am I doing here? How did I get here? I have got to be dreaming… this can't be real” The older wizard chuckles softly as he listens to me talk, “no, my dear Tay, I brought you here, because you’re needed for this quest, you’re needed here, and more importantly, you’re wanted here. Now, let's head inside so you can meet the others of Thorin Oakenshield's company.”
He moves to help stand me up before he starts to usher me inside, and I try to fight it, but all he does is push me through the door, “I’m hardly dressed to meet anyone, I-” My voice faltered as we got inside the hobbit hole, seeing it in person was better than seeing it on a screen.
“Gandalf, you finally came back inside…” the voice starts to trail off once they round the corner of the wall, I look up seeing Bilbo first, “that's a lady… a rather small lady, but she’s no hobbit, her feet aren’t like mine, she's no dwarf, has no beard…, definitely not an Elf, no pointy ears and she's rather short,” Gandalf interrupted the poor Hobbit, “she’s a man, dear Bilbo, let's get into the kitchen with everyone else that way I can explain why she’s here.”
I follow behind Gandalf, trying to stay hidden, my arms being wrapped around my waist, and my shirt being pulled down to cover a certain spot on my legs.
“Thorin and Company, I’d like to introduce you to… where’d you go, my dear?” Gandalf looks around before chuckling and pulling me from behind him, smiling softly. “I’d like to introduce you to another member of the company. This is Tayler, though she prefers Tay.”
I feel all the eyes on me but I continue looking down at the floor, “She’s not from middle earth, from rather another reality at that. She needs to be here for certain parts of the Durin story to stay true.” I finally find the courage to look up, my eyes finding a certain pair of blue eyes already staring at me, my eyes go wide and I quickly look back down, my heart pounding against my chest.
‘Fuck, why did he have to be here already’ I look back up, avoiding the king's eyes as I smile, waving softly.
“Gandalf, are you sure she’s needed?”
I turn and see Dwalin questioning the wizard, and I too, look up at the wizard raising a brow, “I didn’t want to say this, but where she’s from, we’re in a book, and a moving picture, she knows everything that's going to happen, from before to the future, she’s needed Dwalin,” the intimidating dwarf looked my way again and I looked around meeting more brown eyes.
‘Kili’
I smiled more before finding his brother's blue eyes, who had a worry in his eyes. I see them glance down at my arm quickly covering the blood that was seeping through, “excuse me..” I quickly leave the kitchen, making my way away from the group, hearing footsteps behind me.
“Tay,” I turn to the oldest of the Durin brothers, and I can see the worry still evident in his eyes.
“You’re bleeding, did you get inju-”
“n-no... I’m not bleeding,” I quickly lie, shaking my head gently, his brow raises as he moves closer, taking my hand softly.
“I’ve hidden a few of my own wounds to know how this works…” he pulls my sleeve up slightly, his eyes wide before they soften. “what happened to you?”
All I can do is shake my head quickly before he pulls me to a farther room, “breath dear, it's okay,” he whispers, pulling me into a tight hug, holding me tight as I break down.
I finally calm down after a while, taking a deep breath before I pull away from Fili, “I... In my world, I’m not the strongest, I can’t... I don’t believe in myself as everyone else does, I fight my thoughts every day, my mind is a battlefield and I’m the person getting injured.. so, instead of talking, I control the pain... I use anything I can get a hold of, because when I control the pain I can’t hear the thoughts in my head..” I admit quietly.
"I know it's not the greatest thing, and I was clean for over a year but then something happened and I couldn't handle it anymore, the pain was getting too much, my mind was getting too much for my heart to handle so I became weak."
Fili was quiet as I explained, before he pulled away fully, walking to the nearby sink before coming back and cleaning the fresh cuts before he wrapped them gently.
“May I ask what caused you to do it this time? These look fresh, like moments before Gandalf brought you here kind of fresh..”
I look down, biting my cheek, soon a metallic taste coming into my mouth, “the people.. or I should say one person I live within my world, I feel like I’m nothing to him lately, like I don’t matter, it's like he’s only with me to have someone warm his bed, to keep him company... It hurts my heart and soul, so to combat that pain, I use the only thing that I know helps me…” I avoid contact with the blonde Durin, not wanting to see the sadness crowd his eyes.
“If you feel anything during this trip, come to me please,” his voice was just above a whisper, “I won’t tell anyone what's happening but if you must, and I’m not there go to Kili or Balin, they will help you until I can.” I let my head nod in agreement, he finished up wrapping my leg, “if you feel comfortable with it, you should tell Balin, he's one you can trust if you cannot place your trust in anyone else,” his voice was just above a whisper, I nod, letting him know I heard him.
“But please dear one, I know we hardly know each other but don't hurt yourself again if you can,” he started before Kili walked in, causing our conversation to halt.
“Oh, my, are you okay? Did you get hurt when you arrived?”
“She did, she’s all set now though, I noticed it at dinner, I'll just have to check the wounds now and again to make sure they don't get infected” Fili responded for me before I could. “Oh well, I’m happy you noticed brother, don’t need her getting an infection,” he was even sweeter in person, same as his brother. The only person I dreaded talking to was their uncle, the man who stole my heart from my world, the same as he did the moment my eyes met his earlier.
“Bilbo found some clothes for her, he thinks that they’ll fit, and says she can cut them if she needs to,” Kili spoke gently setting some clothes down on the table near the entryway, “I’ll be right out that door, get changed and then we can go back to the others,” Fili’s voice was soft as he spoke to me, I nodded letting him know that was okay. I quickly change before moving back to stand by Fili.
We walk back out to the group of dwarves, a hobbit, and a wizard. Before I speak, I look around at the company around the table, chewing at my cheek. I still couldn’t believe I was in my favorite movie with one of my favorite characters by my side, helping me more than people from my reality when I was there.
Thorin’s POV
The moment my eyes met her’s, I just knew, it was exactly as Dis described it, my world felt complete, almost making me want to go back to the blue mountain but I needed to get to Erebor, I needed to be king, same as my father, and grandfather. I watched as Fili chased after my one once she left the room, making me question what was going on, I shook my head, turning my attention to Gandalf who was already looking at me like he knew exactly what was happening, the small smile on his face telling me he did. He knew exactly what was going to happen, or at least he made it seem as if he did.
“So, she knows about us. What can you tell us of her?”
“She's a small woman, as you've noticed. Part of that is due to where she's from, her world is not the kindest to those who are kind. A warrior, she knows her way around a… a blade if you will, not in the way she should, but she does. She knows what will happen, though I suspect she won't speak about it until she deems it necessary, as I would hope.” He began to explain, "she is a fighter, you can trust her to fight along your side if it comes to it," Gandalf’s voice had sincerity in it as he spoke, causing me to nod, knowing he spoke the truth, and after his anger earlier when they were speaking of allowing Bilbo to join, I did not want to bring that forward again.
I stopped the conversation when my nephews came back with my one behind Fili, in different clothes now, making a small growl escape past my lips without me realizing it until Balin nudged me with his elbow, cursing the dwarf in my mind, always knowing everything.
As she speaks, I calm my heart. “I'm sorry about the sudden absence. I got injured upon my arrival and Fili helped me get patched up, as well as Bilbo has provided me with more suitable clothing.” She admitted. I frown, turning a glare toward Gandalf, who only shook his head softly, meaning the injury didn't occur here. He knew something about her that he wasn't wanting to speak of. I had to get it from him or see if my nephews knew anything. At least Fili, who seems to have gotten close to her within these moments of her being here.
“We shall leave in the morning, despite Gandalf telling me you do, I wish to hear from you. I do have to ask, do you have any weapon experience?”
I noticed Fili physically freeze, panic in his eyes before he cleared his face quickly, “I do, daggers and bows, I suppose swords as well,” she spoke, her voice sounding like a warm spring coming to life after months frozen.
‘Mahal Thorin stop’
I nod softly, “Fili, can offer you a dagger and a sword, my nephew has quite a few to spare. Don’t drag us down,” I spoke before I could stop my words, a frown evident on my face as I noticed the hurt come across her face.
“I’ll offer her the weapons when sh-” “give them to her now, Fili,” I growled out before he agreed, handing her the weapons I had insisted on. I notice a look skim across her face as she takes the weapons, before it's quickly replaced with a smile, "thank you Fili, but I have a dagger of my own, I shall be fine with that for now," her voice was like honey, and it made my heart flutter. I quickly nod, "fine, don't get lost, and don't lose the weapon, you'll probably regret it."
I remember hearing Bilbo and Gandalf arguing in another room, before hearing Balin, "it appears we have lost our burglar. Probably for the best. The odds were always against us." He spoke, causing me to turn to look at him, "after all, what are we? Merchants, miners, tinkers, and toymakers, hardly the stuff of legend."
"There are a few warriors amongst us," I told my dear friend.
"Old warriors," he told me in response.
"I would take each and every one of these Dwarves over an army from the iron hills. For when I called upon them, they answered. Loyalty, honor, a willing heart. I can ask no more than that." I stood up from the wall, standing straighter as Balin stands, "You don't have to do this. You have a choice. You've done honorably by our people. You have built a new life for us in the blue mountains. A life of peace and plenty. A life that is worth more than all the gold in Erebor. Especially now that your one is here, My king..." I look down at my hands, before glancing into the next room and seeing my nephews with Tay, her showing them what was in the pack she had brought with her.
"From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day when the Dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice, Balin. Not for me." I knew deep down he was right, I glance back at Balin, holding the key up, "Then we are with you, laddie. We will see it done."
Balin and I head back to the other dwarves, I make my way to the fire place, leaning against it as I light my pipe, soon all of us humming before I start singing
'Far over the misty mountains cold
to dungeons deep and caverns old
we must away, 'ere break of day
to find our long-forgotten gold.
The pines were roaring on the height
the winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.

I would be honored if you could do an imagine for Fili crushing on someone who went on the journey with the Company. He thought she liked his brother, but after seeing him with Tauriel, Fili feels like he has a chance and offers everything to make her as happy as he thought she would be with Kili. Lovely fluff and some misunderstandings with everyone living because IF I CAN'T SEE CANON THEN IT DOESN'T EXIST
Mixed signals, Fili Durin (platonic Kili x reader)
what do you mean they don’t usually live???? Idk I always skip the last half hour of botfa. If I don’t see it, it doesn’t exist.
Ahahah I got taken away a bit so it’s a long request. Sorry….
Headcanons, female s/o
Tw: misunderstood feelings, mention of injury and blood, tiny sprinkle of angst, fluff, Kili being a lil shit, Fili being jealous, few mentions of Y/N I’m so sorry.
- This man is whipped for you. I posted a request similar to this one yesterday, and I feel like it says enough.
- The moment he sees you, he knows you’re his One. Yet, he can’t allow himself to show you. His brother wouldn’t shut up about it and besides that, after Erebor was to be reclaimed, he had to marry royalty in order to form an alliance.
- But Thorin wasn’t blind. He has seen the look in Dis’ eyes many times before. He had seen his sister find her One, so it came as nothing out of the ordinary when he witnessed his nephew do the same.
- And this is pre-dragonsickness. Back when Thorin was all “I hate everyone but I guess I have to keep up with these two idiots so I’ll tolerate them.”
- And he wanted to grant Fili the opportunity to be with his One. He had even told him to simply go for it.
- But Fili was a bit insecure. When you met him, you didn’t seem taken away in any way. It was almost as if it had only been him who was in love.
- And with that, you had grown remarkably close to his brother, Kili. You two joked around all the time. You sat together during the evenings, Kili would help you up on your horse/pony, he would take offer your watches and he even let you hold his bow and arrow. That is basically dwarven language for “I love you and I wish to court you” or “I love you and I’m so glad to have you in my family.”
- What Fili didn’t know is that Thorin told Kili about you being his One. But instead of teasing Fili about it, Kili had made it his duty to agitate his brother so much that he would have no choice but to confess to you before Kili would sneak you away.
- For your information: Kili had no intention of sneaking you away. He just wanted to make it look like it for Fili, and, lucky for him, you had just been going along with it subconsciously.
- But it did not agitate Fili. It made the poor lad confused and tired. You were showing so much affection and endearment to his brother that he felt like he could never compete. Even though Kili had never been attractive in dwarven standards, he knew his way around women. And seeing someone finally pay attention to him, made Fili happy for his brother.
- And Kili just kept up with the act. He was oblivious to what his brother was feeling. Thorin had quite specifically told Kili not to tell his brother, and for once, he didn’t. But when days turned into weeks, Kili made more advances. Not in any way uncomfortable for you, but they had been a step further.
- He would let you rest against him during night shifts, he would let his hand linger on your waist when he helped you get onto your horse/pony. This sneaky bastard even managed to toy with your hair.
- Fili grew absolutely devastated at these moments. He had distanced himself more and truly felt as if his One had been taken away and he would die alone.
- But then Mirkwood happened. It was obvious to Fili that his brother had taken a liking on Tauriel, the female elf that saved him earlier. You had been passed out of exhaustion in your cell, not paying attention to your surroundings anymore.
- And that was when Fili finally decided to speak.
- “What are you doing? I thought you liked Y/N and now you’re flirting with that elf? You can’t treat her like that!”
- And now Kili was confused.
- “I thought you liked Y/N?” He had questioned, not even knowing whether his uncle had been lying to him or not.
- “That doesn’t matter. What matters is, you can’t just run around-“ but Kili had already cut him off. “It does matter. Because Y/N isn’t my One. I’m not attracted to her!”
- And now Fili was dead silent. He had been contemplating on whether to act furious or taken aback. In reality, he had been a bit of both.
- “You don’t like Y/N?” Fili asked, nearly insulted.
- “I was only trying to agitate you. Uncle said she was your One but that you wouldn’t confess.” Kili admitted finally, knowing that keeping the act up any longer wouldn’t work.
- “So you tried to beat it out of me?” The only response the blonde got was a quiet hum.
- “You thought I would take away your chance of happiness?” Fili wondered aloud, his anger now showing more clearly. “Well, not if you put it like that-“ “How else am I supposed to put it?”
- With those words, the space grew quiet. One more question lingered on Fili’s mind, and he had to ask it.
- “Does she know you don’t like her?” A short pause was heard from Kili before he responded. “She does. When we grew closer she told me she wasn’t attracted to me and I told her she wasn’t my One.”
- A sigh of relief came Fili’s way, but his brother kept on talking. “She grew all confused by the concept of ‘Ones’. Had to give her a whole history lesson. She thinks it’s adorable. I’m sure she won’t reject you.” With those words, Fili’s ears pricked up.
- “How so?” “Because every time we are together, she won’t stop asking me about you.” Fili never thought someone could ever bring him more butterflies than when you smiled at him, but as Kili’s sentences reached him, his stomach felt all light again.
- “At first I thought it was because you were ignoring her, but I quickly figured out that wasn’t the case.” Kili shot a quick look his brother’s way, even though he had been in a cell on the other side of the hall. “She likes you, she really does. She’s not as good at hiding it as you are. If you ask her to court you, she won’t say no.”
- Fili had spent the entire night pondering over his brother’s words. Even as they escaped the dungeons and took the boat to Laketown, his anxiety bubbled up.
- But as soon as the orcs entered the city, reality sunk back in. They had been on the run while simultaneously claiming their homeland. There might be a chance neither of you would make it. And it terrified him.
- As you were busy holding off the orcs in Bard’s home, Fili had been right beside you covering your back. He knew asking you to court him would require more steps. Up until this moment you had only held a handful of conversations, but Fili was running out of patience.
- “When all this is over, I need you by my side.” He told you quickly, his voice heavy as he fenced off the attackers. You grew confused at your words, yet your actions did not falter one bit. And it only made Fili more attracted to you. How you maintained yourself on a battlefield, yet somehow managed to hold that perfect look. It could quite easily take his breath away.
- “But I am by your side.” You answered, not catching his meaning, thinking it had been too good to be true.
- “I mean by my side at Erebor. When we reclaim the mountain. Will you stay with me?” Upon your silence, Fili tried explaining his speech. “I know asking you to court me requires more steps but we might not have time for them anymore. I need you to stay with me. We can do all these steps afterwards, I promise.”
- You cast him a quick look before giving him a sincere nod. “I’ll stay with you.”
- And that is exactly what you did. Upon finally arriving at the mountain with the four dwarves, Fili finally got the time to braid your hair, even if Thorin told him to look for the Arkenstone. You had even managed to braid his hair too, even though you had no beads yet.
- Even as Thorin slowly grew insane, Fili had done what he promised; he remained by your side, defending you against his uncle and keeping you as safe as he could.
- During the battle of the five armies, you stayed with him and Kili. You traveled with the three of you, not once separating. Not even when Fili decided you should split up. Because of that, you managed to do quite a number on Azog before Thorin called out to him.
- Azog had gotten a good slash on your leg, nothing life threatening but enough to make you collapse on the spot. Fili had been so worried. He had promised to look out for you, but now you were bleeding out on the snow covered floor. Kili had already ran off for help, even though the possibility he would come back with one would be highly unlikely, as battle was still raging on.
- On top of Ravenhill everything had grown silent. Bodies of dead orcs were littered over the floor but all that mattered to Fili right now was you being safe. Eventually, Kili had ran back with Bilbo, Thorin and Gandalf by his side. They had successfully beaten Azog, finally putting an end to the bloodshed.
- As the mountain was being rebuilt, Oin had put you on bed rest to let your leg heal and Fili had been with you the entire time. Thorin hadn’t even tried to get him for royal duties. He knew he had been awful to you during his dragonsickness, and this was his way of apologizing to you. And you had been fine with it.
- When you had finally recovered, Kili took you to the forges to make beads for Fili. You wanted it to be a surprise for him, but you needed supervision. At first, Dis, Fili and Kili’s mother, had offered to help, but it had become her duty to distract the crown prince.
- A few burns and scratched had started to form on both your and Kili’s hands but it had been worth it. The beads were incredible.
- Fili was so happy when you gave them to him. He was so surprised by the amazing details and the thought and time your poured into them.
- He wears them the entire time. Now exceptions. Not even for bed or bath. None. They must always be in his hair.
- I WANNA WRITE MORE BUT IT’S ALREADY SO LONG BUT JUST ASSUME HE LOVES YOU SO MUCH AND WILL TREASURE YOU FOREVER AND LOVE YOU FOR EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DO

Whumptober 2022 - No. 5 - blood loss
Fili & Kili, T
Battle of the Five Armies Fix-It
--
“Fili!” The shout echoes off the smooth rocks.
Again.
“... here,” is all Fili can manage.
Swearing.
His name again.
Kili’s voice has an edge of desperation.
Fili closes his eyes. He takes a deep breath. He opens them. He tries to gather his feet under him. He will figure out the how he is going to stand once he gets halfway there.
Nothing happens.
He can see his legs, they are fine. He can feel them. But they do not listen to him. Much like his voice.
“Fili!”
Kili is closer this time.
And he is not alone. Fili had not heard their voices before.
He forces himself to sit forward even though he knows he should not, but cannot remember why. He moves to brace his hands on the large rock he had been leaning against.
Then he remembers. With a shout.
He falls; pulls his arms close to his torso to stop to…
But then Kili is there.
“Fili.” There’s relief there.
“Hey,” Fili croaks. “You’re okay.”
“Yeah. I am. But you’re not looking so okay yourself,” Kili’s tone is light, but his expression is pinched. ‘Had he always had those creases next to his eyes’ Fili wonders.
Other faces press in close. But Fili does not look at them. He only wants to see Kili, to reassure himself with Kili’s okayness.
“Press here.”
Kili’s attention is torn away from Fili’s face to where a slender elf with dark hair is pointing. Kili’s rough, shaking fingers dig into the space behind Fili’s clavicle.
“Sorry,” Kili says softly in response to Fili’s grunt.
“It will slow the bleeding, but we need to move him.”
Fili looks to the voice and starts, pulling away from the elf’s hands that are pressing bandages to his side.
“It’s okay,” Kili soothes. He brushes Fili’s hair back with his free hand. “The battle is over.”
“Did we win?”
“I don’t know if there’s ever a winner of a battle, Fee.” He looks out towards the field still littered with dead. “But we turned them back and there are more dead orcs and goblins than there are of us.”
“We need to move him now.”
Kili nods.
Fili cries out when they move him to a stretcher that had been hastily constructed from two spear poles and a discarded cloak. Kili talks to him the whole time while keeping pressure on the spot behind Fili’s collarbone.
The walk to the camp seems to take forever. Fili keeps one hand on Kili’s arm and squeezes it at each jostle of the stretcher.
“We can take it from here.”
A smaller hand replaces Kili’s and—
“I’m not leaving him.” The force behind Kili’s words surprise Fili.
“Fine. But if we need you to move you need to move.”
“Fine.”
The only constant, the only thing that Fili really remembers from what came next was the haze of pain and Kili’s hand in his own.
But eventually it all fades away.
When it all starts to come back Kili’s hand is still there.
A smile, “You’re awake.”
Fili gives Kili’s hand a weak squeeze. “And you’re still okay.”
Kili nods, his eyes moist.
“And everyone else?”
“Dwalin had some cuts, but I thought he was going to get himself killed when he started fighting the elf that tried to dress them.”
Fili laughs only to wince and curl to the side. “Sounds like Dwalin.”
“And even then he insisted on making sure that everyone else was taken care of before that. He helped carry you back,” Kili’s smile fades, “Most everyone else is fine, just some cuts here and there.”
“Most?”
“Fili…” Kili starts and then pauses. “Thorin, he… he killed Azog, but… he didn’t make it. Bilbo was with him at the end.”
Fili’s voice is soft, “I’m glad he wasn’t alone.”
Kili nods. There is a long lull in the conversation. They just listen to the sounds of the camp outside the tent.
Kili breaks the silence, “Dain’s already been making a fuss about planning a coronation.”
“His?” Fili’s eyebrows furrow.
“No. Yours.”
“I… I don’t know if anyone will follow me. We’ve made such a mess of things.”
“I’ll always follow you. My brother. My king.” Kili presses his forehead to Fili’s.
Fili squeezes Kili’s hand and tries not to think of everything that he will have to do soon.

Thoughts from the last few chapters
A Knife in the Dark
Ah okay phew Fatty Bolger is fine. Scarred for life, maybe, but alive. That’s the important thing.
Butterburr is such a simple man and a good host that even the potential of any of his guests getting hurt, regardless of whether or not they actually were, makes him go >8-O
Aragorn: “We’re gonna be delayed for three hours :-|” The hobbits: “Well at least we get breakfast!”
Tolkien brings the WHOLE STORY to a SCREECHING HALT to assure us that the hobbits’ ponies made it back to Tom Bombadil who eventually sold them to Butterburr and they lived happy lives ever after and I’m not saying Tolkien was a horse girl but Tolkien was a horse girl
One thing we missed in the movies was that ALL OF BREE comes out to watch the hobbits and Aragorn leave and if that isn’t small-town energy then I don’t know what is
Did Tolkien ever visit the American Midwest?? Because those Neekerbreekers sound a whole lot like the hellish half-cousin of cicadas. Not that cicadas aren’t hellish to begin with.
SAM DOES POETRY and we’re all very proud of him
Aragorn: *nerds out about Beren and Luthien* Me: *SNOOOOORE*
Ah yes, Thingol. King Thingol. Turin’s barely-there foster dad, Thingol. Dad Joke Man of Doriath Thingol. ….That Thingol?
FRODO STABBED THE RINGWRAITH LET’S GOOOOO
Flight to the Ford
Sam stands over the wounded Frodo to protect him what a good lad ;-;
Movie!Frodo after being stabbed: *AGONIZED SCREAMS AND WHEEZES AND CHOKING* Book!Frodo after being stabbed: “Ow. Ow. Ooh mountains. Who built that? Can’t see my friends. Ow. :-/”
THE TROOOOOLLS
Weak and wounded as he is, Frodo knows immediately that Sam made up the song about the troll himself, and takes the time to say “well look at you go, I’m so proud of you :-D” they’re so frickin’ cute I’m dead
GLORFINDEL GLORFINDEL GLORFINDEL GLORFINDEL GLORFINDEL
IT’S MY MAN LET’S GOOOOO
Frodo: “I’m not gonna leave my friends in danger!” Glorfindel: “Your friends would be in far less danger if you left! :-)” Frodo: “Oh :-.”
Thinking of the whole flight to the ford with the sound of bells constantly ringing on Asfaloth’s mane makes the whole thing simultaneously funnier and more dire. Here’s a beautiful house, bred in the joy and safety of an elven kingdom, decked out with bells because of course a jolly old elf would put bells on his horse, and now those bells are the only things screaming of joy and happiness and hope in a desperate fight to outrun darkness and death and despair. Kinda poetic, actually. But also DING DING DING DING DING DING DING
Frodo makes it across the Ford by himself! On horseback! Barely conscious! And sits up in the saddle and draws his sword and TELLS THE RINGWRAITHS TO GO BACK TO HELL! GO OFF FRODO, GET IT, KING!
Many Meetings
“A chat with Gandalf” ought to be an idiom for unwieldy amounts of exposition. Seriously, every time Frodo and Gandalf sit down to talk it’s like 5-7 pages of infodump.
Elves can do surgery. This is canon.
Frodo was partly transparent?? Wow. I wonder if that ever lingered in any way……
Elrond made the flood, and Gandalf added horses and boulders just because he’s ExtraTM.
SAM. IS. ADORABLE. But more on that later.
Tolkien: *waxes eloquent about Arwen* Me: *SNOOOOOORE*
Frodo was so surprised and delighted to see one of Bilbo’s old traveling companions that he sat up too fast and scattered all his cushions. And then Gloin helps him pick them all up again. This is the cutest darn thing.
BILBOOOOOO
LINDIRRRRRRR
Bilbo and Aragorn write songs together and Bilbo teases him about his love life this is adorable
The music literally cuts out when the Ring-thirst overcomes Bilbo. This is some big-picture movie stuff and I’m reading a book that was written over half a century ago.
Sam comes to Bilbo’s room to say it’s time for Frodo to go to sleep how homey and sweet I’m done

I just finished reading the books and I've come to the conclusion that I actually really like that Sam married Rosie and Frodo left?
Before reading the books, the ending to ROTK used to lowkey upset me, because Sam and Frodo love tf out of each other! But Frodo leaves and Sam stays behind to get married to someone we don't know and is happy in the Shire without Frodo?? It bugged me. But after reading the books, I've come to the realization that in order for them to get the happy endings they deserve, Frodo needs to leave and Sam needs to stay. And Sam's life with Rosie is essential to his happy ending and completed character arc and is entirely separate from Frodo and Sam's love for one another. The reasons behind why I think their endings are perfect for them have to do with autonomy and the difference between choices made selflessly vs. choices made in self interest.
TLDR; Frodo and Sam’s endings are perfect for them (imo) because they get to choose them for themselves. Both hobbits spend the entire trilogy sacrificing everything they are for the Good of Middle Earth. Frodo leaving is The Good Ending for him because he is suffering the traumatic effects of the Ring; Frodo isn’t happy in the Shire and chooses an adventure of his own to Valinor so that he can heal. Sam staying and getting married and becoming part of the community is The Good Ending for him because he is invested in the Shire; from the moment he returns to the Shire, he chooses to pour his time and love into its restoration and abundance. Sam is a gardener and he chooses the Shire because it brings him happiness, but Frodo can’t find happiness there and so chooses to leave because that’s what’s best for him. (And then eventually, after Sam’s lived his happy ending in the Shire, he sails to Valinor to live with Frodo, and they both get that happy ending, too.)
There’s a little mini essay on Frodo and Sam that I put under the cut because it’s just me rambling, but if I didn’t make my reasoning clear enough above, it might clear it up. (Forewarning: These notes are probably uncoordinated af, because they were jotted down in my phone while I sat on the floor of my kitchen for 3 hours in a feverish ADHD-med-fueled determination to wrap my head around the LOTR ending.)
Frodo and Sam have the same goal (destroy the Ring), but their jobs differ. Frodo is tasked with the actual job of carrying the Ring (the metaphorical weight of the world) to Mordor. On top of physical, Frodo suffers through enormous mental and spiritual anguish to complete this task. Sam, meanwhile is tasked with protecting the Ring Bearer, and every decision he makes is in Frodo's best interest before anything else. He handles the Ring very little and his suffering is mainly physical, but he spends the entire time as Frodo's second, and defers to Frodo's choices and well-being above his own the entire time.
When they return home to the Shire, of the two of them, it's Sam who takes the lead in the resistance against Saruman. Afterward, it's Sam who spreads the dirt and plants the mallorn from Galadriel. It's Sam who takes an active role in saving and restoring the Shire. Of the four hobbits, I noticed that Frodo seems to be the one most affected by the Scouring of the Shire. While they're all affected, Frodo is the only one who doesn't actively start rallying troops and planning attacks. Instead, he takes on advisory duties and then withdraws as soon as he is able.
All four hobbits come back physically changed, but the book makes it pretty plain that on top of this, Frodo is also experiencing chronic PTSD, depression, and withdrawal from the Ring. Frodo isn't completely present in his life because he's trying to cope. He tries to be there for Sam, he even lets Sam and Rosie move in with him after they marry, but on the whole, Frodo is really, really sick.
Sam explicitly states that he loves Frodo, and he tries to be there for Frodo through Frodo's sickness. But unlike the trek to Mordor, there's really only so much Sam can do for him. I think Frodo is aware of this, and it's why he encourages Sam to actively pursue happiness (Rosie, a home, a family, social standing, etc.). Frodo loves Sam and wants him to have the happy ending that Sam wants, but Frodo can only give so much of himself as he is currently. Sam is in love with the Shire, but Frodo's happy ending isn't in the Shire. He's not happy there, and Sam is. Frodo can't give Sam what he needs, and vice versa. They have a conversation about this in "The Grey Havens" chapter. Frodo asks if Sam would be willing to travel with him, and Sam says of course, but that he can't go too far from the Shire. They love each other, but their needs are different, now. Frodo needs help with trauma recovery, and he can't stay in the Shire, but he's also not going to ask Sam to leave it behind to be with him while he recovers. Frodo doesn't need Sam to go with him, and he actually kinda needs to do this himself. And it's really important to Sam's character arc that Sam says he wants to stay.
Sam's life with Rosie is essential to his happy ending and completed character arc. Sam spends the entirety of the books looking after Frodo, caring for him, risking his life for him, and making sure they both go "There and Back Again." For 15(ish) months, Sam is on constant Frodo Protection Duty, and looking at how Sam addresses him and treats him beforehand and during the journey, Sam has honestly probably deferred to Frodo his entire life. But in order for Sam to really complete his character arc, he needs to choose his future for himself. When they get back to the Shire, he begins the process of self actualization, and Frodo helps it along. On the topic of Rosie, it doesn't matter that Sam marries HER necessarily, but it does matter that he settles down and gets to live a quiet life of gardening and family and community, because that's what he WANTS. And it's important that he himself chooses it, independently of anyone else's well-being.
For Frodo, it's both very similar and the exact opposite. He spends the journey to Mount Doom inside his head, facing things he can't physically fight, and he has to lean on Sam the entire way. Frodo DOES make the choice to take the Ring to Rivendell, and then to Mordor. It could be argued that every step he takes toward Mordor is a choice, but it's never his personal choice. It's a choice between Good and Evil. From the very beginning when Bilbo leaves him the Ring to a year later when he finally returns to the Shire, Frodo's one and only choice is the big picture question: Will you choose Good or Evil? Will you give up, or will you continue to put your mind and body through intense trauma so that your entire world doesn't burn? They're both terrible options, but they're the only ones he's given, and both are detrimental to him personally.
When Frodo returns to the Shire, he could go back to living quietly there for the rest of his life, and he actually does try to do that for a little while. But he has choices available to him now, and it quickly becomes clear to him that he's not happy there. He's been changed so much by the Ring and the experiences he's been through and the wider world around him that his journey can't end in the Shire. It's impossible for him pick up where he left off, because he's not that same hobbit anymore. He's unhappy and unhealthy playing that role, and it would be antithetical to his journey and the opposite of character growth. For Frodo, his happy ending looks like trauma recovery and a kinder adventure that he gets to choose for himself, and that's why Valinor is such a good ending for him.
Before he leaves, Frodo does as much as he can to put the Shire to rights and set Sam up to live his happy ending (he INVITES Sam to live in HIS HOUSE, did I mention that? I love them), and then Frodo leaves for Valinor to heal and find his own happy ending. And he gets it. He does heal, and after he's much recovered, Sam comes to live with him after he himself has lived a full happy life in the Shire.
OTHER (other) THOUGHTS:
(((This ending also makes sense, because if Frodo can't live happily in the Shire after going on a huge journey to save it, SOMEBODY better.)))
I also think it's nice that Sam and Rosie get to be in love, and that Sam is allowed to love multiple people. And I think it's lovely that his love for Frodo is not diminished in any way by his love for Rosie. "You're allowed to love multiple people deeply in your life, and that love is not made lesser because it's being given to multiple people" is SUCH a good message.

Hobbit Fic Rec List!
MODERN AU!
Hello! I always wanted to share a gigantic list of awesome works in Hobbit fanfic, but realized they are too many. So let's start small. A few modern AU that everybody has to read!
.......*.......
How to fall in love in 100 days by Kytanna
As their lives intertwine, Thorin, Bilbo, and their nephews learn the meaning of finding a family, love and the hard path towards healing. All, over the course of a hundred days.
A lovely piece with all the cuteness and fluff.
Softer Strokes by autisticalistair
Thorin is a well-known artist living a secluded life in the Swiss Alps. Bilbo is a former history professor living in a trauma rehabilitation centre after a devastating accident that took his parents lives. Through a mutual friend, Bilbo finds himself in Switzerland, and Thorin finds himself with company for the next few months, and neither of them are prepared for what that will bring.
I'll never say 'I love you' by JustReadingMaybeWriting
Bilbo is a veterinary student who one night saves the life a handsome but wounded man. Bilbo should have called an ambulance. If he had called an ambulance, he wouldn't be in this weird mess. He certainly wouldn't be falling in love with the man he saved, who can't seem to leave him alone.
This one's a bit dark, but I love it.
painted blind by nasri
The last time Bilbo stepped foot in Aberdeen it was with a broken heart and a bachelor’s degree. All things considered, this time isn’t so different.
Plan B by Drenagon
Plan B: an alternative strategy; a contingency plan, devised for an outcome other than the expected plan.
Or, sending an unqualified temp to act as Thorin Oakenshield's PA because no one qualified can put up with him.
(He'd say they can't meet his standards. Of course he would.)
Meet Bilbo Baggins. He just became Plan B.
One Modern!AU I always wanted to read and this is just it! It's amazing!! And the whole COmpany is there!!
A Land Far Away by Prollyaghost (Callmerin)
"If we were in a different time or place, this story may have begun with ‘once upon a time’, or even ‘In a hole in the ground, there lived…’ But as it so happens, we are in this time and place, in the outskirts of London, where there are no ‘once upon a times’ and the only holes in grounds lead to sewage tunnels. There does happen to be, however, a man who has dedicated a great deal of his life studying these ‘once upon a time’s. He is an English teacher, enjoys afternoon teas with homemade raisin scones, and he most certainly does not believe in fairy-tales.
His name is Bilbo Baggins, and that last bit about him is about to change."
Bilbo Baggins, an English teacher who has never been outside of England, suddenly finds himself thrust into an adventure when a strange man named Thorin Oakenshield requires his help to fulfil his father’s dying wish. Turns out studying the niche topic of the ancient, fictional society of dwarves was more useful than his parents could have imagined. Plunged into a forgotten land, Thorin and Bilbo must find the mythical Arkenstone, before the legends of the past come back to haunt modern society.
Okay, this one's a WIP, but damn the premise is super interesting and honestly can't wait for the next update!
Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples
Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job that’s… let’s say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarch’s more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
This is one of the fics that does not need an introduction. No matter how many times you read this, it isn't enough. And we all love Fili and Kili here.
What to do When Your Cat is an Asshole by lily_winterwood
“You have a cat?” asks the face on the screen. “Yes. His name’s Smaug, he’s orange, and he’s an asshole. Aren’t you, Smaug?” Surly Food Provider glowers at me, which, of course, I am immune to. “Aren’t you a little asshole?” I don’t see why he needs to call me that. My butthole is perfectly licked, and it smells wonderful.
The AU where Smaug is Thorin's asshole cat. Written for the Bagginshield Unexpected Anniversary.
This one's small, and hilarious and even better if you imagine Benedryl Cucumbersnatch narrating the whole thing
No Ordinary Love by badskippy
Bilbo and Ori have been best friends since they were ten years old and tragedy brought them together. Now, a new job, a sudden rainstorm, a chance meeting and budding romance with a burly, handsome stranger will not only alter their lives, but set in motion events that will change everyone around them, and reveal how lies, deceit and assumptions can leave deeper scars than the ones that can be seen.
WIP, unfinished, but damn was this an interesting tale. For anybody who loves angst, go give it a read!
Remember Me by thehistorygeek
Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield are destined to suffer. In every life they live, in every age, in every era, they meet, and this meeting brings back all the memories of the lives that have come before. But every meeting serves also as a death sentence, for once they have met, one of them is doomed to die soon after, usually tragically and prematurely. They remember nothing of their past lives until they meet, and once they have there is nothing that can be done to stop their fate.
For anyone obsessed with Reincarnation and/or History, this is it.
A Remover of Obstacles by MistakenMagic
"Dis often chided her older brother for being a misanthropist. She did it so often it had become a term of endearment. It was true that Thorin struggled with people; he struggled to form and maintain relationships. Dr. Grey had diagnosed him with this and Thorin hadn’t the heart to tell him this wasn’t a symptom of his PTSD, it was a symptom of his personality. He exercised a sense of apathy with almost everyone he met… But Bilbo was different. Thorin actually found himself wanting to know more about him."
Another fic that DOES NOT need an introduction. I have read it thrice and every time the emotions are still the same. Trigger Warnings, but damn this is all worth it.
An Unexpected Meeting by what_am_i_even_doing_tho
This is the chronicling of the modern day shenanigans of Bilbo Baggins, who is an absolute gay disaster, and Thorin Oakenshield, who is unashamedly enamored. Aka, the modern Bagginshield AU that no one ever asked for but they're getting anyway.
green and gilded by nasri
The next time he visits his parents there are flowers left in the grass, pressed back against the gravestone. They are yellow and white daffodils, plain and wilting.
“Who’s been to see you?” He asks, taking a single photo of the flowers with their drooping stems and curled petals and the wet winter grass that surrounds them. His mother would call it kind, his father might say it's curious, and Bilbo takes another petal to tuck into his pocket.
You know those stories that you read once and then they never leave your head? And somehow your whole life begins to revolve around that one story? Yeah, this is it. Spoilers in tag and I would suggest you read before advancing cause many people do not like it, but even if you are not in that group, just give it a read. This story deserves all the reads.
Bran' New Suit by pibroch (littleblackdog)
Andrew's description had been sufficient to recognize him— a riot of honey brown curls, short in stature, a well-favoured face with expressive features— but it hadn't quite been enough to prepare Tom for the sharp, almost painful tug in his gut at the sight of the man. They had never met before, to the best of Tom's recollection, but there was something eerily and inexplicably familiar about him all the same.
One of the first Modern AU I read and dauym...you won't get it until the end but then...it's fun.
Under New Management by frostyjack
Fili's life is pretty good -- he's doing well at university, he gets on well with his uncle and guardian Thorin, and he's never likely to know what it's like to be poor or unwanted. Then Thorin takes in a foster child -- Kili Oakenshield, a long-lost relative whose past is a total mystery. Suddenly, Fili's life gets a whole lot more complicated. But maybe it gets better, too.
Lots of trigger warning for this one, but when the end comes, you'll know it's all been worth it.
One-Sided Conversations by northerntrash
"Thank you for listening," Thorin said, getting to his feet. "I hope to be able to return the favour, one day."
The man on the bed didn't respond, but since he'd been in a coma for longer than Thorin had known him, that wasn't entirely surprising.
(Not Quite) Prince Charming by manic_intent
The problem, Bilbo would later tell Gandalf in aggrieved irritation, was not so much the unannounced visitors, oh no, but the fact that due to the lateness of the hour and sheer merciless fate, it came to be that at the respectable age of forty, Bilbo was being introduced to a real, live king while wearing striped pyjamas and fluffy slippers.
The Making of a Story by northerntrash
When Bilbo finds a case of old family photographs, he becomes determined to find the original owners: what he does not expect is to become quite so involved in their lives, or that those photographs should prove quite so important.
Misunderstandings and other obstacles for love by ylc
This series dammit! It's amazing, and the dynamics you would ask from a Modern AU.
Candle Glow and Mistletoe by euseevius
Bilbo and Thorin have been married for six months now. The thing is, Thorin’s family doesn’t know this. And because pretending to be just friends for the three weeks you’re going to spend at the family cabin is so much easier than telling the truth, that is what they will do.
(Of course Bilbo has his own ideas of how believable it is for a grown man to bring a friend to spend Christmas with his family. That’s why they make a bet out of it.)
For days you need to just laugh at these two idiots.
The Lost Kingdom of Erebor by Twisted_Barbie
AU. The Lost Kingdom of Erebor is shrouded in myth, likened to the heavens and compared to Atlantis. Until an archaeological discovery unearths that which was lost and awakens the Mad King from his cursed eternal rest.
Not a happy ending, and mysterious and you need to give it a read. Just, do it. It will all be worth it.
Of Palaces and Ruins by livelongandgetiton
Slow burn. Bilbo Baggins is a half-baked archaeologist who has put his dreams of adventure on hold to teach secondary school. Thorin is the grandson of a politically powerful figure in the historically rich and deeply isolationist country of Erebor. When he flees conflict and corruption in Erebor to settle in London, he finds his hands full with two young boys. Gandalf meddles, and Bilbo signs on as a personal tutor for the boys in hopes of getting a foot in the door to archaeological work in Erebor. He soon discovers that Thorin is a tough nut to crack. As Bilbo takes care of the boys he and Thorin grow closer, and secrets about not just the brooding stranger, but the mysterious country and politics of Erebor begin to unravel. It turns out that Bilbo isn't leaving adventure behind, after all.
WIP, updating. JUST READ IT!!!
Write Me Down Easy by lucyraebrown
Bilbo Baggins, a simple man with a wish for something more than his life teaching high school English, is obsessed with a famous author by the pen-name Oakenshield. Although he knows the future is dim for his chances of finding out about the man behind his favorite book, it's reassuring to know someone has the same thoughts about the world.
WIP, updating. It's mostly fuff and happiness, so yesss...feed your inner Bagginshield!
Show Me My Silver Lining by BiSquared
Three years after the hostile takeover of his grandfather's record label by one DJ Smaug, lead singer Thorin Oakenshield is ready to give up on his dreams, even if his band isn't ready to give up on him. If Thorin can convince talent scout Bilbo Baggins to sign them, they might just have a fighting chance. Of course, this is the night when Thorin gets stage fright.
The music industry AU no one asked for.
Love-In-Idleness by perkynurples
Taking Bilbo Baggins, a successful movie actor who is only just getting used to the perks and intricacies of becoming A Face People Want To See, and putting him together with Thorin Oakenshield, with his very traditional (read: slightly backwards) ideas about what constitutes Real Art and Real Talent, might very well be viewed as just some clothead’s idea of a joke. But there are jokes, and then there are carefully calculated risks the size of controversial reproductions of classic Shakespearean plays - for Bilbo, it is the chance of a lifetime to prove himself to all those who have ever deemed him too one-dimensional to even attempt stage, while Thorin has the opportunity to get out of the rut that’s been hindering his career for so long now, and shine in a role worthy of his talent once again. That is if the two learn how to share the same space for more than ten minutes without wanting to tear each other’s hair out. The course of true love never did run smooth, after all…
Did I read this in one go? Yes I did. Did I fall in love with Bagginshiled all over again? Yes I did.
.......*.......
And that's the list folks! I hope you guys have fun reading all of these nice fics! (And all the bagginshield angst/fuff)

Broken heart t'was made of wood
Part 3 - Not here
Words: 2505
The full serie
Bilbo sat next his dining table, cold tea and apple pie forgotten a little further from him, which really was rare of him. Right in front of the hobbit was a small, wooden box. It had played a very beautiful melody, very similar to a lullaby. And for a moment Bilbo had marveled for dwarven engineering and craft. But then he had learned from Thorin, that it was made by (Y/n), as a gift for the dwarven king...
... along side with wooden statues of his family.
Bilbo had, of course, been rather angry when he also learned that Thorin had ordered them to be destroyed. Weeks, maybe even months worth of work, destroyed in few hours by his right hand man and best friend, along side with two best jewelers and crafstmen of Erebor.
"Well, what can one expect from dwarves, who only see beauty in diamond's, gems and stone" Bilbo had sneered, seemingly angry for the king, and for the bald warrior standing a little further from the table. Thorin had stared down to his hands, looking rather quilty, whilst Dwalin didn't look anywhere near the hobbit after that comment, whatever being offended and angry for him about the so called insult or because of the quilt he felt for helping to destroy the statues. Or both.
Bilbo sighed and lifted his eyes from the box to Thorin, who was spacing out, staring the half empty teacup in front of him, but not really seeing it.
"She had a reason to leave, and I do not blame her" Bilbo starts, waking Thorin from his thoughts. His pearsing blue eyes turn to Bilbo, still showing the quilt and sadness in him. Bilbo knew he was sorry for what he had done, and he understood perfectly well that Thorin wanted to apologie and make amends. But there was only one problem. "It just that... I have heard that Gandalf did visit Buckland some few weeks ago, he just never came to visit me. And I also believe that he was alone, like he always is when he comes to our lands, since there were no rumours of young woman travelling with him. And do believe me, if woman - at any age - had travelled with that blasted wizard, word would have travelled trough our lands faster than a wind"
Dwalin sneered and glanced to a dwarrowdam next to him, who in turn galred a hole to the warrior, whilst Thorin was frowning and staring somewhere behind Bilbo. Bilbo looked at them with pity. He felt bad that he had nothing else to offer, and that the married couple seemed to have their own guarrel, seemingly about (Y/n), and he wasn't helping it at all. If anything, Bilbo felt like he was making it only worse, since he had no information about the young woman.
And still Bilbo wondered, how did other's mistake, his loyalty to his king and to his duty, to his job cause such a hatred between them? No, not hatred, they still did love each other.
Bilbo lowered his eyes to the small musicbox. Both of these dwarves loved their king and (Y/n), but where Dwalin was loyal to Thorin and his best friend, Olka was loyal to (Y/n). They might not be best of friend's, not quite yet, but Bilbo could see that in near future Olka would be (Y/n)'s right hand man, or rather woman.
And then he knew that it was that loyalty what was causing all the disagreemend and problems between them. And Bilbo was sure that they would eventually sort it out. Maybe it would even help them, if they had good new from (Y/n). And just then Bilbo had a rather good thought, if one was to ask from him.
"Did you look for her from Rivendell?" Bilbo asked, lifting his eyes from the musicbox to Thorin. Bilbo knew it might be futile to ask it, but, well... You never knew when was talking about dwarves and elves. And the way how Thorin sat a little straighter, more kingly like, how he tried to extend the time before he answered, gave Bilbo the answer he needed. And he gave Thorin a small, tierd yet knowing smile.
"We came straight here. I had no business in Rivendell" Thorin replied, looking Bilbo with emotionless face. The same face he used in council room and pretty much in every situation and conversation he didn't want to be part of and which he wanted to end as quickly as possible, if Bilbo had to guess.
"Expect trying to find yer one" Olka grumbled, glaring the king. And Bilbo smiled a little, trying to hide his grin with his hand maybe a tad too late, for he had been meaning to say the same thing. Thorin and Dwalin looked openly annoyed by the fact that (Y/n) might actually be in Rivendell and not in the Shire, in good hands with their bulglar.
With a small sigh, Bilbo rose and went to collect now cold tea and food from the table, taking it back to the kitchen. All the while he did so, he cursed his adventurous side of the family tree. Those Took's never knew how to live peaceful and normal life, like any respectful hobbit would.
When he returned back to the dining room, Dwalin and Thorin were grumbling something quietly a little further in the room, while Olka was staring out of the window with a little frown. When Bilbo stopped next to her, the dwarrowdam turned to look at him.
"She might be anywhere" she whispered. Bilbo only nodded, turning to look at the two dwarrow a little further away from them.
"There's a change she is in Rivendell. Lord Elrond offered her a place and home from his halls back when we were staying in Rivenell" Bilbo confronts the dam. Dwalin and Thorin stops their quiet talk and turn to look at Bilbo and Olka, and for a while they are all quiet.
"And if she's not in Rivendell?" Thorin finally asks. Dwalin's intence stare almost seemed to drill through Bilbo. Back at the time before the quest he's stare had been intimidating, but now Bilbo could easily brush it off. The dwarves could easily intimitate others if they so wished, unless you knew them well. And were enough stubborn and hot head to not to get worked up and threatened by them. And now that Bilbo could feel himself being unaffected by Dwalin's glare.
"Then she does not wish to be found" Bilbo said, smiling a little sympathetic. "Because in the end, it is her choise what she does with her life, not yours. And you made it pretty clear that you did not have any interest for her" Thorin lowered his head, and swallowed. He knew Bilbo was right, of course he was. Thorin's quest to find his One was almost as trivial as trying to find his father all those years ago, and he had died before they could meet eachother again.
"And since you are going to meet the elves, I believe you are going to need someone who has good relations with them and who can talk to them without offending them" Bilbo said with an ease, moving from the dining room to lobby and from there to his room, muttering to himself. The dwarves look at each other with confusion. Then, Dwalin turned to look at the direction Bilbo had walked, still utterly confused.
"But the wizard is Mahal knows where!" he half shouted so that the halfling could hear him. And as soon as the words had left his lips, Olka sighed, half facepalming and half messaging her temple, while Thorin turned to look at he's best friend. Then Dwalin turned to look at the two and he made silent "oh" sound as he understood what the halfling had meant.
After 15 minutes Bilbo came back to the room after leaving an ragback to the lobby, wearin a travel fit clothes on him. He walked straight to the kitchen, not paying any attention to the dwarves, and after 10 minutes or so, he came back with a small bag full of something and another bag hanging over his arm, empty. Again, Bilbo passed over the dwarves, not looking at them or paying any attention to them, as if he had already forgotten that they were still there. Dwalin and Thorin exchanged looks, while Olka was staring after the halfling with keen interest and a little smile over her lips.
After 10 more minutes or so, Bilbo appreared back in the lobby, now looking at the dwarves, smiling little to himself. He had big bag full of something with him, which he lowered to the floor next to his travelling bag.
"I have a newly wed relatives that I'd like to watch over Bag End while I'm gone, so if you don't mind a little delay, I'll go and fetch them" the hobbit said. Thorin and Dwalin only nodded, a little puzzeled by their little friend's eagerness for travelling. Compared to last time, this was a huge change. But, then again, this time they were only travelling as far as Rivendell and there was no dragon looming at the end of their travel. Olka, instead, was nodding with approval.
"Of course, master Baggins! We can't leave your home without someone watching over it. And not to forget your garden!" she said, still nodding. And Bilbo smiled. She was the first dwarf he liked from the moment they had met. And there were quite many dwarves he had met!
Draco and Primula Baggins were more than happy to watch over Bilbo's home, and they even promised to throw a small party to few of their friends to epty Bilbo's pantry - for they had claimed that since it was just the two of them at the moment, they simply couldn't eat all their own food and Bilbo's food before atleas half of it would spoil.
Happy for the situation, Bilbo started his new adventure with the dwarves. They had to get him a pony, since the dwarves only had three with them and they all rather travelled alone on a pony, even Bilbo. And this time the ponies hair didn't bother him, he had remembered to take - not one but three! - handkerchief with him! Bilbo still missed Minty sometimes, but his new pony, Rosabell, was as sweet as the late pony. And as beautiful with her dark brown mane and chocolate and white fur. So, Bilbo was more than happy to own her, and he was sure that he would go riding more often when he would return back home from Rivendell.
Their traveles went on well without any incidents until they stopped at familiar, destroyed farm house. Bilbo let out a long sigh after seeing the house and regocnising it. Thorin threw a quick look to the hobbit, before orderin Dwalin and Olka to look some firewood. The two left rather quickly with muttered "Aye", while Thorin and Bilbo stayed behind to mend the ponies. When the two dwarves were far enough, Thorin turned to look at Bilbo with a small, reassuring smile.
"This area is safe now. Myself, Dwalin and Olka camed here on our way to your home, and we made sure that there are no more trolls in the area" Thorin reassured Bilbo with a small smile. Bilbo sighed, relieved to know that. He still remembered too vividly their encounter with the three trolls.
"That's good to hear. But still, if you don't mind, I'd rather still be on quard than take it easy" Bilbo said, still being a little tense. He already feard how many nightmare's he would have. Or, how little sleep he would have. Thorin squeezed his shoulder and gave a symphatetic smile to the hobbit.
"No need to be sorry, Bilbo. It's good to be on your guard at all the times, even when one tells you there should not be any danger" Thorin said and then he left Bilbo alone with his thoughts as he went close to the old farmhouse. Bilbo stayed a while with he's pony, still feeling uneasy. After Dwalin and Olka came back with the firewood, Bilbo sighed and gave a quick kiss on top of Rosabell's snout. Then he joined sitting with the small company. And soon after Dwalin had gotten the fire going, Bilbo started to prepare their dinner. Yet again. Dwalin and Thorin weren't that good of a cook's and Olka rather enjoyed the hobbit's food. Even the green one. Sometimes the dam offeren to help the hobbit, sometiems she rather sat close to the hobbit to tell him stories.
That night Bilbo had nightmares of the jorney to reclaim Erebor, and more specific, of the evening they had encountered the trolls. (Y/n)'s scream echoed in he's ears as one of the trolls had grapped her and the terror was still fresh in his mind as Olka woke Bilbo. After reassuring the dam that he was fine, Bilbo lay there on his bedroll, unable to sleep for the rest of the night.
Why was here, again?
Bilbo was leaning to a white fence, staring to one of the beautifulest scenery's he had ever seen. And yet, he still couldn't see it. He's mind was apsent, blank. He could only, still, hear Thorin's heartbroken cry. The elves would escort him home the next day, while the dwarves would... go back home, back to Erebor, if Bilbo had to guess. Then Bilbo lifted his eyes, finally somewhat focusing to the scenery.
Not here.
The second Elrond's face dropped, turned serious, Bilbo knew the truth. How the elf lord lost all the emotion's from he's face.
She was not here.
How convenient that Gandalf was here. From all of the places. And how nice of him to deliver the news to the group. Not. Yet again, the wizard being there seemed to be more of an joke than usefull thing.
She was not here.
It was a miracle that lord Elrond and Gandalf were still alive, given the circumstances.
She's with her family now. Lord Elrond and king Thranduil, of all the elves in the all the Middle Earth, had found a way to send her back to her world. She was where she wanted to be, where she belonged. And why ever Gandalf hadn't dropped by Bilbo's home when he had been visiting in Buckland and informed the hobbit about the new was still a mystery to the hobbit.
Bilbo's eyes finally found a lonely person standing in a far balcony. Alone, broken, and a small wooden box on his hands, playing a lullyby his mother had hummed to him when he had been a pebble. A roque tar dropped to Bilbo's cheeck as he heard Thorin's wistfull voice, how he remembered his longing look.
"One day, I wish to play this to our pebble. Mine and (Y/n)’s"
Not here.

ALRIGHT thanks to the thranduil gifset I just reblogged a couple days ago, I’ve now got some Thoughts™️ and am subjecting you all to them so bone apple teeth if you’re a lotr fan and R.I.P. to everyone else
so here’s a long-winded (tbh when am I not) explanation of why I absolutely love thranduil’s characterization in the movies, because yeah we love to hate him but he’s also an incredibly complex character and mr lee pace did a stunning job in this role LET’S GO
so when we’re first introduced to thranduil he’s this regal, cold, imposing figure who we can see is very proud but also willing to help thorin’s company…for a price. thranduil wants a share of the jewels in the mountain and is willing to invest his soldiers, time, and effort in order to receive said jewels, which he claims are rightfully his. let’s call this battle option 1, taking erebor back from smaug, although we’ll never know how involved in fighting the dragon thranduil actually would have let his forces be. moving on.
thorin very gracelessly rejects thranduil’s offer, and reminds the elven king of another instance involving erebor in which the elves turned away and did nothing, aka battle option 0, helping the dwarves defend their home from smaug’s attack and invasion. thranduil and his army had marched all the way to the region of erebor, potentially to help, but once the king saw the scope of damage that had been done, and the fact that smaug had already entered the mountain, he retreated back to mirkwood and offered no aid to thorin’s people. obviously this is a bit of a sore point between them.
so after our bestie bilbo helps the company escape via barrel waterslide, the orc pack that had been hunting the company (specifically thorin, fili, and kili) catches up to them and begins an attack while still on elven land. the following skirmish between team erebor-mirkwood and team orc is the first time we actually see any of thranduil’s people fight, so let’s go ahead and call this one battle option 2, the elves of mirkwood chasing down both the orcs and the dwarves but ultimately letting the latter group go because the orcs are a more immediate threat. once both the orcs and the dwarves are out of thranduil’s borders, he couldn’t care less what happens to them, an attitude and decision that makes tauriel and eventually legolas leave in pursuit of the orcs.
then we spend a lot of time focusing on the company, and thrandy doesn’t show up again until movie 3, after the company has reclaimed erebor and middle earth’s T.A. 2941 MVP bard has slain the dragon. at this point people of all shapes and sizes are starting to remember that hey that dragon was sleeping on a pretty hefty bed of gold and there’s only a handful of dwarves + one hobbit to defend it, and they all start moving toward the mountain, including the displaced people of lake town and mr sir king thrandy himself, along with his entire army. thranduil let the dwarves go, waited to hear what happened, and now is once again poised and ready to fight for those gems of pure starlight or whatever. he offers food and assistance to the people of lake town, with the expectation that they will all fight with him to get into the mountain and take some sweet sweet treasure back out. everyone clap for the introduction of battle option 3, thranduil getting ready to start a whole war over some shiny rocks. he’s willing to fight for the gems and win because he knows the dwarves are severely outnumbered.
however, Azog the Needs-to-Buy-Some-Self-Tanner has other plans. he brings in an absolutely massive swarm of orcs and wargs to take down anyone who stands between him and his two prey: the direct line of durin and the kingdom of erebor. suddenly thranduil’s not so keen on fighting for the mountain after all. even after dain’s people arrive to aid the dwarves of erebor in their fight, thrandy does nothing. he asserts multiple times in this movie that he doesn’t want to shed elven blood if he doesn’t have to, even if it means the destruction of another people. however, bard, gandalf, and even bilbo yell at him enough to where he orders the elves to swoop in at the last second to help the dwarves and keep them from being slaughtered. stepping in to finally do something actually helpful is our much-awaited battle option 4, woo!
so the battle rages, and while the elves and dwarves and handling things pretty well, there are a LOT of orcs, and unfortunately Azog’s not stupid. the Forces of Evil start to overtake the Forces of Moral Grayness but With Good Intentions, and thranduil begins to see his people, his prized warriors, fall. almost immediately, he recalls his army, telling them to retreat because, “I have spent enough elvish blood in defense of this accursed land.” thranduil has weighed his soldier’s lives against those of the other fighters, against the prize in the mountain, and made his choice. however, tauriel stops him and berates him for abandoning the fight, after which thrandy tells her the dwarves mean nothing to him because whether they die today or tomorrow, it doesn’t matter. she claims he has no love left within him to act as a good person and he responds with the very interesting “what do you know of love?! nothing! what you feel for that dwarf is not real! you think it is love?! are you ready to die for it?” despite this sour encounter, legolas and tauriel end up rejoining the fight, and we don’t really know what thranduil does. however, it’s safe to assume he was shamed enough to continue to fight, since azog and his army are later defeated and thranduil shows up to talk to legolas and tauriel after the battle is won. let’s call this combined retreat and return battle option 5: thranduil fights, regrets it, and then fights some more because one of his subjects hollered at him.
the final time we see thrandy, he gives us the biggest hints at his true character yet. he goes to speak with legolas first after the battle is done, and legolas tells his father that he can’t go back to mirkwood. thranduil doesn’t try to stop him, but after giving him some advice, he says this: “your mother loved you...more than anyone...more than life.” NOW up until this point we have only heard one other mention of legolas’s mom, and it came from legolas himself. earlier in the movie, he and tauriel traveled to the fortress of gundabad to see what aforementioned Forces of Evil were up to. legolas tells tauriel that the elves once waged war in the lands beyond the fortress, the ancient kingdom of angmar, and goes on to say that his mother died there, in battle, and that “my father does not speak of it. there is no grave, no memory, nothing.” this is INCREDIBLY important to thranduil’s character, and one of the lines of dialogue that necessitates a second viewing of at least movies 2 & 3.
cutting back to the end of the movie, thranduil tells legolas that his mother loved him, which is maybe only the first or second time legolas has ever heard thranduil speak of her. strange that he should bring it up now, no? after legolas departs, thrandy sees tauriel near kili’s (r.i.p.) dead body, and they also have a very interesting conversation. tauriel tells thranduil through tears that if this is love, she doesn’t want it, and she not only asks him why it hurts so much, but also begs him to take the pain away. she says, “why does it hurt so much?” and his response? “because it was real.”
We all remember that like three paragraphs ago he told her she didn’t really love kili, right? scroll up real quick if you’re not sure. it’s only after he sees her mourning kili’s death, weeping, in pain, that he either realizes or admits she really did love him. and after this encounter, thranduil doesn’t show up again.
now, this is all well and good, but it doesn’t really explain why he’s such a cool character and why he’s a lot more relatable than we first think. Bravo to you for reading this far, but unfortunately we’ve got a bit more to go so buckle up and get ready for some feels.
SO
if we go back and look at every “battle option” instance, as well as thranduil’s conversations with his son and his former captain of the guard at the end, we see a heartbreaking pattern emerge. in options 0, 4 (kinda), and 5, thranduil is incredibly reluctant to fight, choosing instead to keep his own people safe even though it means death and/or destruction for the people who need help. in option 0 he intended to help, but once he saw how difficult/dangerous the fight against smaug would be, he withdrew his forces. the only reason he enters the fight in option 4 is because he had very angry people yelling at him and knew it was only right (also he definitely wouldn’t have gotten any treasure at all of the orcs won instead of the dwarves). then in one-half of option 5, he tries to get his forces to stop fighting because he can see the damage that is being done and the elvish lives being lost. it seems that he will always choose his people over any other option, unless prompted or forced to do otherwise.
but sav, you say, options 1, 2, 3, 4, and part of 5 all prove that thranduil had no problem sending his army out to fight! he’s ready to fight off orcs and whatever else is after thorin’s company in option 1, when he offers them assistance in getting to and into the mountain, for a pretty reasonable price as well. he sends his guards and his own son after the orcs when they trespass in pursuit of the company in option 2. option 3 shows thranduil arriving at erebor with his entire army in tow, ready to take on the company and invade the mountain himself, just to reclaim some diamonds. go off king I guess.
all of the evidence appears to tip in the “battle-happy” version of thranduil, UNTIL we considers his reasons AND who he’s up against. every time we see him gear up for a fight without a problem, he’s facing someone he knows for a fact his forces outnumber/can defeat. these are easy battles, and any casualties that might come from them would be minimal at worst. he offers thorin help because he believes that either the dragon can be defeated by their combined forces or that a beowulf situation in which mutual destruction of dwarf and dragon will happen, freeing up ownership of the mountain’s treasures to the first person to sit on the throne. he sends his guards after the orcs because there are only like 30 of them, max and they’re trespassing on his lands. he goes after the jewels because the dwarves are probably dead, and if not, there’s less than 20 of them, up against the thousands in his army. easy peasy.
anytime he turns away from battle, it’s easy to see why: there is a greater chance of failure and bloodshed. in desolation of smaug he also appears to be very callous and uncaring with both the spiders and the orcs: he attacks them when they’re on his turf, but once they move to other lands, he doesn’t care to hunt them down. movie 3 is the first time we see him fight for something beyond his own borders. this makes him seem like a very unlikeable, selfish, defensive leader. and this is how we’re introduced to him. but as the final movie plays out, we realize we were misled. we were given one piece of the puzzle that is thranduil king of mirkwood, and as we fill in the rest of the pieces from the final movie, our perspective changes.
time to tie it all together! (although y’all have probably figured out where i’m going by now) legolas reveals that his mother died in battle while fighting in angmar, which is far behind mirkwood’s borders. at the end of the movie, thranduil knows his son has been to gundabad and was probably reminded of his mother. we are told again and again that thranduil is not interested in pursuing evil creatures outside of his kingdom’s reach, that he considers elvish blood to be sacred and priceless, that tauriel does not know what real love is, and later, only after she’s lost it, that she does.
so my theory (which isn’t really a theory because it’s pretty much canon, you just have to be reading between the lines) is this: thranduil has been and will always be on the cautious side with his people’s lives because of the death of his queen. he knew what tauriel was going through because he went through the same thing centuries before in angmar. the last time we know of that thranduil sent the elves to fight outside of the borders of mirkwood ended with the death of his wife/soulmate. no wonder he stays in his own kingdom. no wonder he would rather retreat than risk losing any more elvish lives. no wonder he is closed off, haughty, proud, and cold. he has felt love and pain before and he’s not eager to show any weaknesses concerning them again.
and if you look, if you just look at how lee pace acts this character out through movies 2 & 3 you can see that he knows how complex this character is, he knows the tragedy and fear that thranduil keeps wrapped up tight and locked away. and the more you watch the movies, the easier it is to see.
okay rant over, sorry y’all. if you’ve read this far, thank you for coming to my ted talk, and if you just scrolled to the bottom, i don’t blame you at all. hope you all have a good day :)
#hoo boy that was a LONG POST#sorry y’all#but I had a lot of thoughts and feelings#and this is the only place I can or want to rant about them#thranduil of mirkwood#lotr#the hobbit#long post#sav speaks#sav writes a whole essay on a fictional character

Hi, I really like your blog! Can I ask: "how will Haldir, Lindir, Thranduil, Torin, Fili and Kili behave if they fall in love with s/o, but She is human and does not know that they love her)) Sorry for my English 😅
Thank you 😊. Also don’t worry your English is perfect 💞
Thorin
First off he acts so kind and protective it’s definitely noticeable the way he treats the company compared to you but it’s mostly because he knows he can be rough around the edges.
He shares his stuff with you which was very very surprising especially since it consisted of his cloak when he saw you were shaking from the cold, his share of the food and he even tossed you his dagger when you were in a tight spot
You and Thorin definitely grew as friends but he also got frustrated as time went on you were human and didn’t understand that sharing blades and clothes was a thing strictly kept between family and lovers therefore you didn’t understand he was being more than friendly
Someone else would have to tell you what Thorin meant for you to understand his motives or if Thorin got really frustrated he would grab you and kiss you roughly to convey his point and feelings for you
Fili
He gets cuddly and sweet, Fili is usually a nice person to be around and he’s compassionate to those he likes but around you it’s like he’s finding a way to pay off an endless debt
He has definitely gone to Kili, Bilbo and Gandalf if not the entire company asking what stuff you like and how to convey that he really likes you or even just to rant about how much he loves you
He will cuddle you in a friendly way but deep down he wants nothing more than to call you his own you’ve both fallen asleep with each other before and that was the best nights sleep you’ve both had
A bit like Thorin he gets frustrated as time goes by and you’re still oblivious but he gets more desperate than frustrated until one night he can’t help himself and just straight up confesses he can’t deal with keeping you at an arms length anymore
Kili
He’s like an excited puppy constantly all over you, very needy for your attention, compliments 24/7, cuddles and not just the gentle embrace he full on tackles you for a hug, shares everything he owns in short he’s adorable
There’s also a fiercely protective side to him which can be rather scary to whoever manages to upset you and you best believe Kili with fight whoever talks bad or gets under your skin
It’s so obvious he’s crushing hard on you just the way he looks at you says it all but for some reason you’re still oblivious and he takes this as rejection and gets really sad when once again you’re just friendly with him
The way you finally find out that he really likes you is when the company tease him over it, you were sat right there and watched him go bright red then he admitted he really likes you and has for a while now
Thranduil
Very jealous this elf is more jealous than words could say he wants you to himself, he wants to call you his queen, kiss you, cuddle you at night you name it he wants to do it
He uses his position of power to his advantage, he often calls you to meet with him he gets very dependent or what would seem dependent on you he’s just making excuses and he gifts you with riches you could only dream of
Though you still don’t know he’s being more than friendly he’s persistent but he loses a piece of his calm and collective nature each day you treat him as just a friend
Eventually he gets drunk and tells you absolutely everything, every little detail is spilt he would’ve told you when he was sober at some point but his drunk self caught up to him and exposed his little secret
Lindir
He’s shy but that doesn’t mean he isn’t the sweetest person around you he respects you completely, gives you flowers, let’s you borrow some of his stuff including cloaks and a few things here and there
He adores you in fact Lindir would drop all his duties and responsibilities if you needed him for anything, he’s always the first one to help you and he even offers to take your workload so you can relax for a while
Lindir loves taking you to the prettiest parts of Rivendell to see your face light up or hug him as a means of thanks you really get his heart racing and in these moments he almost breaks and confesses but gets really shy at the last minute
Elrond is the one that can’t stand to watch you so clueless and unintentionally break Lindirs heart so he tell you how Lindir is feeling confident that you feel the same way too
Haldir
He’s actually a little mean to you elves only fall in love once but he’s never felt so strongly to someone before and needless to say you mess with his head you’re on his mind every minute of the day and it started to affect him
He always went out scouting with you or to fight with you so he could keep you safe but always kept you at arms length and sometimes you felt he pretty much hated you
It was no wonder you didn’t understand he had any sort of romantic feelings towards you in fact you were convinced he never wanted to see you in any circumstances but after a while Haldir came round and it ate away at him that anyone or anything could swoop down at any second and take you from him
It’s not until he begins to come round and realise he could well lose you for good that he confesses and shows you the side to him that’s been begging to show since he fell for you

Thorin x reader.
(Not my image.)

Word count:4682
Characters:Y/n, the company, humans, elves, and David Bowie as Jareth.
Songs:ziggy stardust, as the world falls down.
Warnings: Alcohol, just ale. Uh mentions of jareths pants , and reference to a jareths 'magic'
It's only forever, it's not long at all. Only if we have forever, but we all die. We are not elves, we are not Morgan Freeman. Unless, you aren't telling me something?
Thus, you must take risks; to live the life you want to. The reason that you finally agreed to go an adventure, via Gandalf's request. Not that the leader of the group, that you'd be joining on this adventure, did not like the fact that a hobbit was joining , let alone alone you, a human, female. Not impressed to say the least.
You had just ignored the tree trunks insults, and seeking the company of the small hobbit. Both of you were in the same position, except you could maybe launch Thorin over a cliff.
Unknowingly Thorin had created a friendships, well between you, Bilbo, Fili and Kili. After you and Bilbo had decided to mock Thorin in secret.
"Wait, wait, I've got one." Standing up placing one leg on the log, hands on hips, head up , shaking you head slowly as if the wind was blowing it. "How's my hair?" Mocking Thorins low voice, looking at Bilbo who had stopped giggling, moving his eyes crazily to gesture behind you.
Turning your head slightly, to see Thorin staring at you. " Can I help you?" Unmistakable using a lower voice than normal, Thorin scrunched his brows together slightly. "What are you up to?" His eyes glazing over your stature, and posture.
"Oh, If you must know, Bilbo has been making sure that my family jewels have not dropped off due to my massive ego, last time he had to stitch them up because I am such a prick. Not that I could produce because I'm like 160." Maintaining eye contact with Thorin, chest fully pressed into the air, basically superhero pose, now off the log.
Thorin did not understand what you were talking about. "Get your things , we are moving on." Bilbo had just covered his mouth facing down, his eyes looking up.
“Do not test me , Y/n, I will throw you off a cliff, as if you was an end of bread. You are not worthy of this journey," Kili and Fili had been sat by, watching the scene unfold, as Thorin just stared at you. Kili walking over to you.
"Uncle!"
"My sisters son," Pulling Kili into a bear hug, him being the little bear, before pushing him off of you. "Get of me, people will think I'm soft, I am pure steel." You had not even noticed Thorin leaving.
"That was horrible," It really was, could you be anymore cringy? "You annoyed Uncle though, I am surprised he didn't put you into line." Fili didnt speak much, but when he did, it wasn't useless trivia.
"My arms may have no muscle, but does not mean I couldn't carry both Bilbo and Kili to their horses." Okay, maybe you would be able to actually, but it gained the trios attention. "I highly doubt that, y/n"
Bending your knees so that your back was in front of Kili, hands ready to grab his calves. "Y/n, are you sure? I don't want you t-"" we don't have all day, Kili."
" okay, Thorin." You had scoffed, as Kili had managed to get on your back, arms around your neck, legs around your front. "No, no,no not me." Bilbo shook his head furiously, in disagreement , as you gestures for him to get up. "Bilbo , please." Bilbo had sighed , as Fili watched you then pick up Bilbo, holding him Bridal style.
It was like carrying nothing, it was definitely a lot of weight, yet you still put in a face and walked through camp with them. Even if you couldn't fight, you weren't completely weak.
You had gained the attention of the dwarves, who Kili waved by in excitement , Bilbo just pretend to be dead in embarrassment. Thorin had caught your eye for a second as you walked by him, lift Bilbo onto his pony, Thorin told you pack, you were packing...Kili had then gotten off your back when you had kneeled down.
But what you didn't know, was that Thorin eyes were on you most of everyday during the the journey, you just happened to be oblivious to the gazes on you.
If you did catch Thorins gaze, you just thought that he was judging your actions, others picked up on their kings behaviour. Though they did not tell you, they did tease Thorin. Well only Dwalin , Kili and Fili dared to. Actually it was Bilbo who noticed first.
It was probably a few days after almost being eaten by trolls, that Thorin had began to develop feelings. At first he had just thought that you were mildly annoying like his nephews, that impression, was terrible. But once you were all captured by trolls...
You had pretended to be dead, the trolls had tossed you aside, and every time they were not looking you would crawl slightly. Tossing you aside for dessert. Thorin had caught this. Pulling faces as at him, as you slowly got closer, Thorin watching for the trolls.
When you had gotten next to Thorin, you had pulled a knife from you pocket , cutting the sack he was in. You had cut through quite a bit of the sack; when Thorin had pulled his hands out lifting you , shoving you into the sack with him, just as Berts eyes had glided over the dwarves.
That was when the trolls had noticed you had disappeared, but you were stuffed into the bottom of Thorins sack. You were too tall for the sack, your legs curled up, back inbetween Thorins legs. "Where is the human?!" The trolls had began to looking around finding no sign of you ,the moved on soon enough.
"Uh...the-the secret to cooking dwarf, is um..." Bilbo had tried to distract the trolls , after seeing Gandalf of course you couldn't see , you could only smell Thorin.
"Uh...not...not that one, he...he's infected!"
"You what?"
"Yeah he's got worms in his...tubes."
"Ooh!"
"In-in fact, they all have. They're infested with parasites, it's a terrible business, I wouldn't risk it, I really wouldn't."
"Parasites? Did he say parasites?" The dwarves were not the smartest bunch to say the least.
"Yeah, we don't have parasites! You have parasites!"
Thorin had realised that Bilbo is trying to buy them time and kicks Kili, but ends up smacking you with his calf, making you groan , only for Thorin to gently squeeze your shoulder, the trolls had been too busy listening to dwarves , that they never heard your quiet groan.
Gandalf soon had arrived, saving you all as always, the trolls turned to stone. It didn't take long for Bilbo to realise you were missing still. "Where's y/n?"
"I'm over here, Bilbo." You could not get out of the sack neither could Thorin, without someone helping you out. Kili being next to Thorin, had heard your voice, turning to see his uncles, feet looking a bit too pointy. "Where?"
Bilbo had turned in circles in search, Thorin just later there with the most unimpressed face.
"Bilbo, she's over here." Bilbo had hoped over , out of the sack, before opening the sack at the top to allow Thorin could shuffle out. Standing up, Thorin had pulled you up and out by your hand.
"T-thanks, um, your thighs are very comfortable, if I was murderer , I would make them into pillows. Oh, um, thanks , uh," your face flushed pink, noticing how you sounded and that both Bilbo and Kili was right next to you. Sometimes you are ought to think before you speak, a common term taught to children, yet you do not. You had rushed off back to camp, after that.
Tis was a compliment to dwarves for a woman to comment on their thighs or stature.
That was it, Thorin began to notice things about you, you helping Bilbo onto his pony when he needed help, even if he didn't directly ask. The way you'd slip on mud , even if it was dry, save yourself and look around wide eye if anyone had seen. How your arms got tired as you'd try to plait your hair. Slapping Kili gently on the back of the head if he said something mean about one of the others. Normally Kili picked on Ori's knitting .
Of course, Thorin thought his affections only went one way. You could not deny, the dwarven king was intoxicating, you were highly attracted to him. He was a mean guy, no he was not , he didn't want Bilbo to get killed going in this journey to help him.
You hadn't spoken to Thorin directly really, well until he allowed the company to stop at an
inn for the night, which everyone was happy about. The Dwarves were mostly excited for ale. You just hoped they had a deep clean...
Luckily they did , and soon everyone was a sat tables in the pub, 3 separate ones, you being stuck next to Thorin ,Bilbo next to you, Bofur next to him,Kili and Fili so on. Next came the ale, being pushed in front of you all.
Bilbo asked for a tea, but Bofur wouldn't have it, so there sat Dildo sipping at the pint of ale. Whilst everyone drank down theres soon enough, you just drinking it , because you was shoved against Thorin. After your fourth ale that's when you heard it.
A noise like a hurricane , the soaring winds of the mans pipes opened.
"Oh
Oh, yeah
Ziggy played guitar
Jamming good with Weird and Gilly
And the Spiders from Mirkwood
He played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man" Looking over to the small stage, a skinny man, with a huge blond Mohawk stood, his bare chest exposed showing a large pendant on his lower chest.
"Then we were Ziggy's band
Ziggy really sang
Screwed-up eyes and screwed-down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan
He could lick 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang" Your breath hitched, as your eyes travelled down to his pants, he wore a legging type pants, showing off everything
"They came on so loaded, man
Well-hung and snow-white tan
So where were the spiders
While the fly tried to break our bones?
With just the beer light to guide us
So we bitched about his fans
And should we crush his sweet hands?" The dwarves and hobbit noticed your change, following your eyes to the man on stage.
"Do you know him?" Fili had snapped you out of your trance quickly, "o-oh, um, I haven't seen him for a long time."
"Who is he, lass?" Thorin said nothing just stared back between you and the man, as you kept glancing at him. Bofur had waited for your reply, calling over more ales. "my best friend ." That was the truth, not that anyone knew but you had wished yourself away to the goblins, thus a friendship bloomed.
Growing up you didn't have many friends, you still don't , Jareth was always there for you, you didn't want to out him being a fae.
"He was the nazz
With God-given ass
He took it all too far."
That's when he caught your eye, sending you a wink before continuing to sing with ease.
Half an hour later, you were starting to feel a little more free, after more ale, leaning onto Thorin for support.
"There's such a sad love
Deep in your eyes a kind of pale jewel
Open and closed." Jareth had started his 15 song of the evening, you had jumped up, well start up. "Thorin! Come on, let's dance." You had pushed him slightly. "Why?"
"Just come on, 'deep in your eyes a kind a pale eye,' that's you so you must dance with me, please." Thorin had finally had budged , standing up, his eyes were gems indeed. You had grabbed onto Thorins hand pulling him onto the cleared floor. You didn't know how to dance not really, but it was the heat of the moment. Well actually you had danced with Jareth during his masquerade.
"Within your eyes
There's such a fooled heart
Beatin' so fast." Placing one hand onto Thorins shoulder, the other into his hand, you could only hope you weren't making a fool of yourself. Jareth did like to be generous.
"In search of new dreams
A love that will last
Within your heart
I'll place the moon."
Looking into Thorins , bright eyes, which stared back into yours, you followed suit with steps , you hadn't realised that Jareth had changed your clothes into a white gown and sorted your hair, but the others and Thorin noticed. Following Thorins eyes down to your clothing you had get let out a snort.
"Within your heart
As the pain sweeps through
Makes no sense for you
Every thrill is gone" The dwarves hadn't seen Thorin dance since he was a prince, yet there he was with you dancing. Your eyes never leaving Thorins, as you danced in sync, turning together in a circular motion.
"I cannot wait for you to see Erebor." Thorin voice was quiet not to interrupt the music. You had grinned in confusion. "I thought you didn't want me on this quest? Why would you want me to see Erebor?"
"Wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you-ou-ou."
"So that you can attend a proper ball." You had smirked at the King, who just smiled at you.
"Well, you have got plenty of time to tell me all about Erebor, on this journey, that is if you speak to me after this."
"As the world falls down
Falling."
"As you wish." Thus you both just went back to just dancing smiling a little more now.
"As the world falls down
Falling
Falling in love." Though there was a room full of people surrounding you, it felt as if you were in your own world. Your own crystal...
"I'll paint you mornings of gold
I'll spin you Valentine evenings though we're strangers 'til now
We're choosing the path
Between the stars." You could only hope that everyone would make it to Erebor...
"I'll leave my love
Between the stars
As the pain sweeps through
Makes no sense for you
Every thrill is gone
Wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you-ou-ou
As the world falls down" As the song finished, you had pressed a kiss to Thorins cheek, Jareth was having a break, you had let go of Thorin, telling him you'd be right back.
Still in your puffy gown, you had made your way over to Jareth standing at the bar with a glass of what could only be described as some sort of rose fancy drink, fit for a fae king. Jareth had placed the glass onto the side, holding his arms out for you.
Jumping into his arms, spinning you around, legs up , before placing you back onto the floor. "Jareth, I missed you." Jareth grinned back you showing his teeth , "as have I missed you, so you and the dwarven king?" Jareth had looked passed to you to Thorin, you looking back too to see Thorin glaring.
"Uh, I dont know, did you know we was going to be here?" Jareth had grinned larger, confirming his answer. "Come meet my friends quickly." You had grabbed Jareth by his hand leading him to your table.
The dwarves and the hobbit had looked up from their conversations, mostly with smiles. "Uh, guys , this is my best friend , Jareth, Jareth this is Bofur, Fili,Kili,Thorin and Bilbo." You had gave Jareth a side hug, he had clicked his fingers and you were in your regular clothes. " 'ello," Thorin had looked Jareth over as you squashed next to Thorin ,with Jareth next to you.
"So, what are you?" Kili bluntly asked, staring at Jareth in interest. "He's the g-ubli- king." Jareth had silenced you for a second blurring the word Goblin. "I'm sorry , what?" Bilbo Baggins was always intrigued by others, especially if you looked like Jareth. "He is a king."
"Of what."
"Now that , Bofur, is for you to figure out." Jareth was indeed a confusing, mysterious man, he seemed to have sobered the dwarves up.
"How did you do that with the dress?"
"You are a very curious lot , aren't you? - "
Jareth could be nasty, you were surprised with his behaviour.
"Well, then how did you meet him , y/n/n?"
" she wished to be taken."
"...Y-you are th-" Bilbo knew he had heard of the man he had heard sing, his books had had came in use. But again Jareth had cut Bilbo off, he knew what Dwarves were like.
"Clever hobbit."
Now, my love, if you need me you know what to do." Jareth had turned to you , pulling you into a hug, looking at Thorin, with a devilish grin. Only if you had know what he had put into Thorins head.
Really he just said, "I will turn you into pie for my Goblins, if you hurt my y/n." That was it, he was gone, you had been hugging air for a good second, before turning back to the group of men , who just stared at you.
"Uh? What?" Bofur, Kili and Fili exchanged looks of agreement.
"You and that strange man, yep, that definitely happened." The smirk inlaced into Kili's voice, as he stared at ,waiting for a response. You had only scoffed at " I'll call him back, and you ask him, I'm sure you'd him to make you into a pie for his Goblins." In that moment, Thorin had realised that Jareth, wasn't just a thin stick, he clearly had fed someone to his Goblins before, Thorin didn't want to find out if that was true.
Thus, the subject was dropped, and that was it,though the other dwarves wanted to know what just happened, and Gandalf didn't give a shit or already knew.
Well that was it until you had all left Rivendell , clean for now, only to get captured by Goblins.
No way were they anything like the unwanted children, absolutely. Stuck next to Thorin, you stuck out being human, wishing you had stumbled onto the actual Goblin king. Thorin had pulled you down and shielded you from the whips.
You could only wish... but you didn't Gandalf saved you all again.
Back on the road again, until Thorin gets chewed up by a warg, you rushing towards him, as the dwarves fought off the wargs and orcs. Only for the eagles to arrive , seeing an eagle fly at you and Thorin, you had laid careful onto him. The eagle swooping you both up . "Hey Thorin, are you alive? maybe I can use those thighs a scarf sometime?"
Thorin did not wake up, until Gandalf had done some magic shit, him and Bilbo became best friends.
Then you were all captured...again, by the worst kind of elves. Dumb blonds, no, Thranduil was just a dick. All of you were stripped down to one layer , all but Thorin and you , were shoved into cells. You was asked the general question, why are you travelling with dwarves, well actually that was it.
You had pretended to faint. When Thranduil stood over your head to see your face, you had pretended to wake up, punching him right in the dick. "O-oh my I-"
"Take them away!" Thorin was surprised you were not executed on the spot, oh how he tried to hide his laughter, as the elven knelt in agony ,and you were both dragged away. Shoved into a cage today, before the elves stomped away. Of course , Balin asks Thorin what happened, instead of telling him what you had done, he had simply said about him shouting in Khuzdul.
" Hey, are you coming to my execution tomorrow? I wonder if my last words should be 'being an elf there's only one down fall, once you get to Thranduils age, your cock shrivels up ," Thorin had snorted , and that is when he saw it, your hair...looked like radagasts hair ,but without poop and birds.
Thorins eyes had stared too long, it was clear to you, you were just talking to him, of course you'd see him staring. Your hair. Well yes that was embarrassing, a king was literally making fun of your hair by his silent judging.
"You're judging my hair? Did you not see radagasts?" Thorin had snapped out of this stare, realising what he had been doing, a light blush upon his face. "You are right, " that's he had said, and went back to looking at your hair.
Sighing you had sat on the cold stone, let again breaking Thorins stare. "Are you going to do my hair or just stand there?"
"Are you sure?" Accepting his offer Thorin was quickly sat behind you, combing your hair, of course you didn't know about dwarvish customs. You didn't know you had just accepted his courtship, but you had.
It wasn't long before your hair was braided completely , and just as you had stood up Ori had spoken up. Though you didn't here what he had said but you had heard Bilbo. "Not in here your not." A jingle of the keys and you were free, well lead to the cellars while the others questioned Bilbo.
Soon enough well when Thorin had convinced the dwarves to get in the barrels, via Bilbos request, leaving just you and Bilbo out. Until Thorin had gestured you over, helping you inside the Barrel, but you stuck out more than the others, you wondered why Bilbo didn't get in one with one of the other dwarves. You barely in the barrel when Bilbo had pulled the lever, gripping onto Thorins shoulders as you were both submerged for a spilt second. Thus, you were off , trying to escape the elves , squished against the dwarven king, that you had unknowingly courted.
Kili was shot, and Bombur did some extreme parkour, and boom you had reached land. Soaking, freezing, lucky your hair was all braided back, thanks Thorin. Stopping to allow Kili's leg to be wrapped up , to prevent further blood loss.
Dwalin had almost give you a heart attack ,as you stood twisting the water out of your clothing. "Who did you hair ,lass?" He had basically popped up beside you , inspecting your braids , his voice louder and powerful.
Looking at the dwarf, who looked right back waiting for your answer , already knowing the answer. "Thorin did, why?" Dwalin only hummed before returning to his brother, him surprisingly whispering to his brother, Fili and Kili had looked at each other in disgust. Even though Kili was supposedly in pain.
"Do that again and you're dead." Snapping your head up, to the unfamiliar voice..was that orlando bloom? A human, a man with shaggy dark hair, worn out clothes , beautifully structured face. Boom, you had been able to board passage on his barge.
"Why is a woman travelling with 13 dwarves and a hobbit?" You had coughed, turning around to face Bard, you weren't very sure what you was supposed to say. "Well, um-" " She's travelling with us because she's betrothed to uncle." Fili had spoken up, saving you from revealing everything, still you had turned to Fili, eyebrows scrunched in confusion, Fili and Kili smirked.
"You are courting a dwarf?" Thorin had scoffed, as Bard kept his eyes on the lake, his tone was almost unimpressed. "Well, I almost fucked a fae s-" "y-y/n! That's not a-appropriate." Bilbo had choked out, without a thought.
"Come on, Gaggins, did you not see the pants he wore? His magic-"
"Enough." Thorin had interrupted you sharply, snapping your head towards the clearly annoyed King, walking over to him, punching his cheek. "Awwe, jealous of Jareth? You have a lot to live up to. Does your dick grow even after erecttion? I call it his magic c-"
" Hold on." Bilbo had pointed his pipe at you, staring at you, " How do you know that?" Bilbo had coughed again , with his cheeks red trying not to cry. "Don't tell him, maybe I held eye contact with not his eyes many times without him noticing , plus I asked him if he could grow tall as a house, and he said yeah, so I just assumed. I swear 100% I never walked in -"
"Hello, love." You had jumped out of your skin, turning around, there stood Jareth, your face flushed red, shoving him gently. "Oh- , not nice Jareth, could've died from shock." Jareth only ignored you, looking at your hair, his hand skimming over it , in interest.
"I heard you speaking of my cock, y/n/n, I'm flattered, but with those braids , I'm afraid you are no position to be making advances on me." Lips slightly touching your eyes, as the vibrations of his whisper sent chills down your neck. “Well, what position do you want me in?” Pressing your back right against Jareths, his hot breath heightened onto your jeck. Thorin was fuming with anger, the dwarves didn’t know what to make of the situation.
“Y-y/n, enough do you not know what you have agreed to by those plaits?”
You had turned quickly pulling Jareth away from the dwarves, well as far you could get anyways. "W-what are you talking about? What about the plaits?" Jareth had laughed loudly, getting the attention of the the dwarves , as you reached up to touch the braids.
"Oh, love, you don't know. Those plaits especially when done by a dwarf , signifies courtship, you have accepted." Eyes widened at the king, as he smirked at you, laughing lightly.
"What do I do? I am courting a king, I mean it’s not like I don’t like him , it’s j-“
“You are just being dramatic, you both share affections for each other, so what’s the problem? You know what to do if you need me.”poof he was gone, again.
So you had made your way over to Thorin, pulling him to his feet by his tunic, his eyes wide, as you pressed your lips to his harshly. His hands making their way into your hair, pulling you closer to him, kissing you back.
Your hands now under his jaw, the company well, they were as you could expect...cheering loudly. Pulling away from his lips, still in his hold , as you looked into his bright blue eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Tell you what?”
“That consenting you to braid my hair , meant that I accepted your courtship? I would’ve anyways, but I had to find out from Jareth, I thought that was just a ruse to explain why I was travelling with a bunch of dwarves.”
“Sorry, thought you knew.”
“You hear that Lads, she thought he braided her hair out of the kindness of his heart.” Company had burst into mocking laughter, but you and Thorin had ignored it.
“Well, if we are going to get married, I need the goblin king as our wedding singer.”
“Goblin king?”
“What? You didn’t know, Jareth is the goblin king. Not that wart of a goblin, “
Thorin had only stared at you.
“No, you can’t kill him, his dick would come off and fuck you in the ass.”
“I’m sorry, who’s dick would what?” Bilbo had popped up , with disgust and confusion upon his face.

Beans’ Bagginshield Recs
Here it is! My first rec list eight years since I first started shipping Bagginshield. When this lockdown started (and ended and started again) I found myself re-reading OG/classics and discovering new ones. Sifting through my AO3 history I realized I have read and already forgotten so much fic over the years. For a while, I though the ship had run its course but as we can see now, Bagginshield lives! Check back for updates as I discover (and remember) more fics. Pay attention to the tags and trigger warnings!
AU
I Sang In My Chains Like The Sea by orphan_account for lincesque, IronPanda
In which Bilbo is a Jaeger pilot candidate, and Middle Earth stands on the brink of destruction. (Pacific Rim AU) [Wasn’t sure how this one worked but man it did]
At the Turn of the Year by northerntrash
They say that strange things live in the woods, fair folk and things more spirit than man; don't step between the old oaks, parents mutter to their children, or they might find you, and eat you. Thorin never believed that, but now winter is settling into his bones, the shadows are growing longer through the hoar frost, and he is lost among the trees.
And it was there that Thorin met him, that strange, laughing creature, walking barefoot through the bracken.
Canon-ish
Homeward Bound by perkynurples for 61Below
His life slips away from him on an elven boat carrying him overseas, and there is one last journey Bilbo Baggins must take if he truly means to arrive home.
Sansûkh by determamfidd
The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.
The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
The Great Shire Conspiracy by Avelera for Emsiecat
Ten years later, Bilbo can't even go to the Green Dragon without a dwarven tourist buying him a beer and sobbing over Bilbo's great tragic love affair with Thorin Oakenshield. Which would all be quite touching and heartbreaking, if not for one little thing...
Dark (generally not a fan but this one made the cut)
Pain-Bearer by lilithiumwords (unfinished)
In an alternate reality, Erebor was never taken by Smaug, and the War of Dwarves and Orcs never happened. The Orcs invaded the Shire, slaughtering hundreds and taking countless more as slaves. Bilbo is slave to Azog, the Dwarf King's mortal enemy... until the Dwarf King rescues him.
Dwarves! in the Shire
Selling to Hobbits by HildyJ
Exiled from his kingdom and living on the mercy of others, Thorin is determined to make his own way in the world for him and his family. And the annual Summer Fair in Hobbiton sounds like the best place to sell enough of his crafted goods to do just that.
Oak and Mistletoe by HildyJ (series)
After a life dominated by a strange form of sickness, Thorin is sent to the Shire to seek a cure only Bilbo Baggins can offer.
Erebor - Nope, Never Fell
A Most Sensible Idea by HildyJ
Bilbo Baggins isn't sure about this. Not one bit.
Frodo is definitely too young to enter into an arranged marriage with a dwarven king called Thorin Oakenshield. It's a good thing that Bilbo is there to chaperone him through their courtship.
After all, there's no chance that a fussy hobbit bachelor would ever catch the eye of a king.
Signs and Meanings by HildyJ
It shouldn't matter to Thorin that the visiting hobbit cook doesn't speak his language. But it does.
Per Aspera by northerntrash
Deep in the dungeons of the Kingdom of Erebor, in an old, unused storeroom, lived a Hobbit.
In which Bilbo Baggins, a strangely successful thief, makes a mistake, and meets a Prince.
Erebor - Rebuilding
Mother-Tongue by northerntrash for HildyJ
Forget-me-not: a small flower, with four petals, which are normally found in shades of blue with a pink or white centre. These are traditional flowers of intent in the Shire, used to express true love, and remembrance.
In which Bilbo plans to leave Erebor, and Thorin tries to understand why.
Previous Engagements by Lunarflare14
After the Battle of Five Armies Thorin and Company have a new task: rebuilding their reclaimed home. Suddenly Bilbo finds himself up to his ears in responsibility and he surprises himself with how well he can navigate negotiations with elf dignitaries, farmers in Dale, and a dwarf king who has patience for neither.
But as Spring approaches a caravan from the Blue mountains brings something everyone had nearly forgotten: the dwarf woman Thorin promised his hand to many years ago.
Which is fine. It's all fine. It wasn't like Bilbo was falling in love with the king or anything.
That would be tragic.
And I'm Your Lionheart by Lee_Whimsy
Bilbo lingers in Erebor while Thorin recovers from his wounds, and soon finds himself caught up in politics, romance, and the occasional kidnapping. Ensemble cast. AU. Eventually Thorin/Bilbo.
Fix-Its (Gawd we need them)
An Expected Journey by MarieJacquelyn
For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?
Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.
though the stars walk backward by baggvinshield, killaidanturner
Bilbo wakes, always in Erebor, with dark shadows to one side and the first light of a terrible dawn to the other.

Over Your Shoulder by northerntrash
The battle is over, and the lost have been counted. There is too much death, too much blood, and in the middle of it sits one small Hobbit, left quite alone but for a body on the ground and the memory of what might have been. But he is a tenacious creature, and if there is one thing that he has learnt, it is not to give up hope.
In which Bilbo Baggins goes on one last journey, and doesn't come back alone.
Historical Setting
The Ghost And Mr Baggins by perkynurples
They say that everything can be cured by saltwater - sweat, tears or the sea. Bilbo Baggins chooses the last option, taking his recently orphaned nephew and moving to the charming Oak Cottage, overlooking England’s grislier shores. The house charms him instantly, and though he knows nothing at all about the sea, or about making ends meet on his own so far from everything he’s known his whole life for that matter, he’s quite determined to stay, and see his nephew get better, odd sounds in the night be damned. He’s living in a modern world, after all, and the nonsense he’s been hearing about the house being haunted by its former owner, the mysterious Captain Durin, is just silly superstition… isn’t it?
Hobbit! Thorin
I've Grown a Hedge Around My Heart by pibroch (littleblackdog)
Thorin Brandybuck, just recently come of age, still lives in his family’s smial in Buckland, with his parents and two younger siblings. Thorin is an odd duck amongst his relations and neighbours-- unsociable, grumpy, shy, and awkward. And beyond that, he looks rather strange even for a Bucklander, strongly favouring the thick, dark haired build of his Stoorish blood.
It defies all sense and reason why Bilbo Baggins, an exemplar of all the respectable traits Thorin lacked, would ever desire a friendship with him.
Bilbo, as Thorin discovers, is not always as sensible as he appears.
Marriage (or something like it)
An Unexpected Proposal by Eareniel
As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?
He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.
Something Blue by Lapin
Thorin marries Bilbo after the Battle of Five Armies, a marriage of convenience, not love. Slowly, they must come to make the best of it, Bilbo resolves. After all, he's a Hobbit. They make the best of things.
Magical/Super Powers
On Adventures and Other Forms of Conduct Unbecoming of a Wizard by manic_intent for beingevil
For as long as even the old Gaffer could remember there had been a wizard living in the hill at Bag End, overlooking the Shire. As wizards went, this one wasn't the wandering sort, always out to lure gentle folk out onto nasty adventures, or even the powerful kind, the sort that lived in high towers, reaching out into the ways of the world.
Modern Setting
Old Stone, New Fires by northerntrash
Bilbo was not sure what he had expected when he had agreed to supervise the restoration of Erebor House, on the lonely tidal island in the North sea, but it was not this. The winters up here are cold and harsh, and there is a strange feeling on the air, thick with the brine of the sea and secrets to which he is not privy; there is some part of the long and troubled history of the place that has not been spoken of, a shadow between the broken family gravestones and the caves beneath the cliffs, dark and dangerous.
Perhaps it is all in Bilbo’s mind, but as the nights grow longer, he starts to doubt it, and as Thorin sinks ever deeper into black and incalculable moods, he will have to find what has been lost, before it takes them all.
For This by northerntrash
Thorin Durin had lived in his new flat for approximately eighty four minutes when things started to go terribly, terribly wrong. The wrongness came in the form of a package, delivered to his door, wrapped in brown paper and string, with a small tag wishing him a very sincere welcome to the building.
The course of true love never did run smooth, after all…
If There Were Water by stickman
Bilbo Baggins might be in over his head. He’s purchased an old stone house atop a hill overlooking a city he doesn’t know, and plans to live quietly, largely ignoring the rest of the world. But it’s early April, the rainy season, and the roof leaks, and there's something strange about Bywater House that he can't quite figure out.
Thorin Oakenshield is in his fourth month of trying to reconcile his own grief with his failures at anything remotely resembling a competent single parent, living out of a shoebox flat with Fíli (seven, sullen, and stubborn as hell) and Kíli (five, resilient but cracking), working crap jobs and hating everything including himself.
Under the cover of rainy afternoons and sleepless nights, roof repairs and building restoration, Bilbo and Thorin try to figure out how one navigates isolation, and how one breaks out of it. Every step they manage to take forward finds them dragged back again; every question asked has too many answers, or too few. This is a story about living in a world where everyone is on their own, always, and how things go on.
How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us by stickman
Bilbo is a harried 1st year British literature Ph.D. (early 20th century fiction) who happens to have an interest in spatial narrative structures, a lack of time-management skills, and a tiny apartment with a lot of books and very little furniture. He’s stressed, always, and doesn't quite know where he belongs. He tells himself that really, this is, in fact, what he wants to be doing. But sometimes, as much as he loves books, he gets an urge to do something with his hands.
Thorin is a disgruntled M.Arch. 1 in his last year who can’t be arsed to shave and frightens his students, and, frankly, his profs, but his work is top-notch so no one can really say much. They can, however, bully him into running a hands-on design workshop on Saturday mornings, which is complete crap, because he’s used to drinking his Friday nights into oblivion so showing up at Milstein at 7:45 the next morning and trying to teach in a room of wall-to-wall windows as the sun rises is not at the top of his list. Besides, no one ever shows up.
Except one morning, someone does.
The Boy You Met (At The Coin Laundry) by Lee_Whimsy
Bilbo accidentally spends a summer in Ireland. One rainy day, Thorin appears in the hotel laundry room, naked and dripping wet and about to propose. (But not, unfortunately, to Bilbo.)
Gandalf, Thranduil, and a handful of Spanish footballers all guest-star.
Hooked On You by Chamelaucium
Thorin should have learnt not to trust his brother and sister by now.
Come with us on holiday, they’d said. It’ll be fun, they’d said. A nice break from work.
Yeah right. All this holiday had brought him was being knocked around the head, acute hay-fever, and the biggest, most ridiculous crush ever on the cute, golden-haired fishing instructor.
“One”/Soulmates
you lick your lips (you taste like years of being alone) by perkynurples for stopchasingflowers
Thorin Oakenshield was born without the longing, and has spent his whole life merely observing others as they pursued a feeling unknown to him until they finally found their One. He has made his peace with the prospect of being alone, and has been faring well enough, but little does he know the fates have a different story in store for him.
Things We Grow Together by serenbach
Dwarves are born with a bone-deep knowledge of their One, but Thorin stops feeling the pull of his after the dragon attacks Erebor. Needless to say, he is surprised, and not initially pleased, to find his One living behind a round green door decades later.
Hobbits find a seed that represents their innermost self and can offer it to someone else to plant. This creates a bond as strong as deep roots in the earth between them. It is just like Bilbo, after years of thinking that no one would want his, to offer his soul-seed to a dwarf that does not understand gardening metaphors.
But just because they have found each other does not make the quest to reclaim Erebor any easier, and in the end a sacrifice is still made.
Thorin has to trust in the strength of the bond between himself and his One, because otherwise he will never believe that the sacrifice was worth it.
Colour-struck by northerntrash
Soul mates are like adventures, Bilbo had often consoled himself. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things that made you late for dinner. It was no great hardship that he had never met his, even if he couldn't tell which of his petunias were blue and which were purple.
Quest-ions
Discovering Mr Baggins by Eareniel
The story of a Hobbit, told through the eyes of the dwarves.
Thorin Oakenshield's Majestic Diary by Fruitsie
Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain and Totally Majestic Badass of Middle Earth, does not have a raging hard-on for Bilbo Baggins.
No, seriously.
Just read his diary.
Call You Home by northerntrash
In which the Company are entirely too nosy about matters that are supposed to be a secret, and Bilbo learns that being concerned about propriety is overrated when you could be making friends instead.
Time Travel (because walking Middle Earth is not enough)
Of an Arcane Binding by Salvia_G
An inexplicable magic ties Bilbo Baggins, hobbit of the Shire, to Thorin, dwarven prince of Erebor
