The court heard major cases this year that ran the constitutional gamut: on partisan and racial gerrymandering, public-sector unions, President Trump’s travel ban, sales tax in the internet age, voting rights, politicking at polling places, sports betting, abortion, the seizure of cell phone records and discrimination against same-sex couples. In most ways, it was a firecracker term for conservatives. The court upheld the travel ban, blocked a law requiring “crisis pregnancy centers” to supply information about abortion, dealt a monumental blow to organized labor and upheld most Texas legislative maps that had been called racially discriminatory. In a few ways, though, it was a dud. The court punted a partisan gerrymandering case back to a lower court, it crafted only a narrow decision in the case of the cake baker who refused to serve a gay couple, and it offered another narrow ruling in the cell phone data case.

But no matter how you see the decisions, the latest term, like all Supreme Court terms, generated cold, hard data. Specifically, it generated data about where justices sit on the ideological spectrum and how they interact with one another. With a new justice, Neil Gorsuch, still fully settling into his seat and speculation intensifying about a possible retirement of the court’s swing voter, Anthony Kennedy, I wanted to look at the justices’ judicial relationships with each other over the last term, and what they might augur for the future of American jurisprudence.

This 2017-18 session was the first full slate of high-court cases for Gorsuch, the Trump appointee who took his seat on the bench in April 2017, more than a year after the death of the justice he replaced, Antonin Scalia. Before Gorsuch joined the court, my former colleague Harry Enten and I wrote that Gorsuch’s prior record as a judge made it likely he’d sit somewhere to the right of the conservative Scalia, and somewhere to the left of the arch-conservative Justice Clarence Thomas. In other words, Gorsuch would be a solidly right-wing justice. This is how we saw it 19 months ago:

That picture is more or less bearing out. The most prominent measures of justice ideology are called Martin-Quinn scores. After his first few cases, those scores put Gorsuch right around where Scalia was and Justice Samuel Alito is, a bit to the left of Thomas. The updated scores for the latest term haven’t yet been calculated, but it’s safe to say, given the voting tendencies of the court this term, that Gorsuch will remain in that ideological vicinity — a solidly right-wing justice who likely has decades remaining on the bench.

In lieu of those scores, for now we can simply look at which (more established) justices Gorsuch agreed with most often. At first, it seemed like Gorsuch might be even more conservative than expected: Through his first 15 cases in a partial 2016-17 term, Gorsuch sided with Thomas every single time. That streak has since been broken, but Gorsuch has still sided with Thomas more than any other single justice.

I tallied all of the justices’ votes1 — from when Gorsuch took his seat to Monday morning — and calculated how often each pair of justices agreed with one another. A few pairs of SCOTUS BFFs, eclipsing even the conservative duo of Gorsuch and Thomas, emerged from this analysis. Gorsuch and Thomas have now voted together about 84 percent of the time, but Thomas and Alito, Kagan and Breyer, and Ginsburg and Sotomayor, for example, have all voted together more often.

But the flavor of the public reception has been what you might expect. “Conservatives have generally been pleased with what they have seen, while liberals say their concerns have been confirmed,” wrote the American Bar Association Journal. As ever, not everyone is happy at the same time.

What’s going on elsewhere on the bench? Some of the court’s recent cases have raised eyebrows for the strange bedfellows they’ve created. “Elena Kagan Is Up to Something,” Slate observed, noting she “crossed ideological lines at least three times” this term. What she’s up to, Mark Joseph Stern argued, is building a centrist bloc, shoulder-to-shoulder with Justice Breyer, Chief Justice John Roberts and Kennedy, and steering the court to “sensible outcomes” rather than “conservative blockbusters.” Be that as it may, Kagan still sided with her two more liberal colleagues nearly 90 percent of the time. And, of course, there are always exceptions to a simplified left-right ideological spectrum of jurisprudence. Last week’s decision on internet sales tax, for example, “defied the usual conservative-liberal lineup,” reported NPR, with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joining Kennedy and the conservatives Alito, Gorsuch and Thomas. And Gorsuch and Breyer joined forces in a dissenting opinion just last week — unlikely bedfellows indeed.

Speaking of Kennedy, what is in store for the pivotal, ideologically central, 81-year-old fulcrum of the court? No retirements were announced during the court’s final day of term. Assuming he stays, the court’s tenuous, four-to-four-plus-Kennedy balance will remain. If he goes, Trump could fill the seat and create a conservative majority that could remain in tact for many years. Who knows … In May, Bloomberg wrote that Kennedy was “the focus of retirement speculation” and The Hill spoke of “a frenzy over rumors.” No one except Kennedy himself really knows, and even then maybe he doesn’t either.

2021 predictions for mobile marketing

Last year’s predictions post: 2020 predictions for mobile marketing. Note: this is the first part of a two-part prediction series. Part two will be published next Monday, December 28.

I considered not publishing a predictions post this year because 2021 feels fundamentally unpredictable. Apple’s announcement at WWDC that it will deprecate the IDFA and introduce the App Tracking Transparency framework was foreseeable; I presented a hypothetical chain of events catalyzed by IDFA deprecation back in February, and frankly, I had expected the IDFA to be deprecated at WWDC 2019.

But 2021 is different. Every player in the ecosystem has been put into a defensive posture and sits on far less stable ground than they did at this point last year. Perhaps the lack of clarity around how the mobile advertising ecosystem will evolve in 2021 renders a post like this even more necessary. But if the degree to which 2020 has progressed through a series of anxiety-inducing announcements continues unabated, 2021 certainly promises to be lively.

2021 will be dominated by the privacy-focused changes initially from Apple and then maybe from Google. We already know the format of the SKAdNetwork changes to some extent, but the ramifications of those changes will be seen throughout the year.

Firstly, I believe that that will be an arms race for the ownership of conversion values. Ultimately the owner of the conversion value will dictate where the majority of UA spend on iOS goes. This will result in Facebook, MMPs, and developers contesting who decides the schema of conversion values. My bet is Facebook wins by owning or effectively owning conversion values through a bridge to their internal data set.

I do not believe that Google will make privacy-related changes to the extent that Apple has. Google already believes that GAID is privacy compliant, and given that they are an ad network at heart, they have much more skin in the game when considering the impacts to their revenue.

Data is a lagging indicator, and as such it has led to a set of high-iteration, low-value behaviors in UA. The above privacy changes will, in my opinion, result in the pendulum swinging back to somewhere between product marketing and performance marketing. This will lead to a general increase in the quality of creative that we see and a reduction in the “Data only” focus that the majority of UA teams have.

I believe this year will be the year that we truly see a decline in Hyper-casual. The main driver of this will be the fact that the advertisers who were bidding high CPIs on that traffic, in the hope of finding one or two high-value payers that pay for all of the other wasted impressions, will dissipate. The reason for this is advertisers who use high-risk, high-cost, high-reward strategies will no longer have the user-level information that they had before to enable them to understand which strategies work and which do not at the level of the individual user. The only thing that they will understand is aggregate level information and as such, they will be more risk-averse, leading to lower CPIs and lower eCPMS on the ad monetization side. The margins will become too fine for Ad networks and as such hyper-casual will become unviable.

I do not believe that having many DAU combined in hyper-casual titles is actually a viable strategy against IDFA deprecation. The reality is the percentage of those users that have IAP capable payment processing means is extremely low and as such the value is really only in showing another advertising impression. This means the strategies that companies like Zynga have employed to stave off the risk of IDFA deprecation will prove to be shortsighted.

Lastly, the true winners of 2021 will be the products that understand that LTV and CPI are two sides of the same coin. Hyper-core will be a dominant strategy in 2021. Games that have high IPM, low eCPI, but exceptionally high early conversion to payer will be the staple in 2021. We will not see another Game of War-esque success.

The biggest challenge for people in our space, especially in 2021: get out of our comfort zone and adapt to the paradigm shift in tracking as privacy impacts how we execute and measure marketing. Two cliché buzz words we need to “deconstruct” and relearn are: creative and incrementality. Health warning here: these are all predictions, inherently data fewer theories!

Creative, which is often misconstrued as the least scientific aspect in our field, is indeed becoming perhaps the only element we can have real total control of in marketing, so what it really needs is a solid data infrastructure to support it. If you took a simple approach, we could breakdown into 3 distinct pieces:

a background, setting the scene,

a midground showing the MC of the message (human, alien, machine, etc),

a foreground with some interaction, or speech, or object, etc.

These are the variables you can control with your assets and they can be associated with a verified KPI, ideally IPM. Once we have built a significant number of assets in this fashion, we can then run intelligently as many permutations as needed to scientifically find the winning combination that drives successful creative.

2021 might just be the year we finally push business intelligence to creative in order to “rinse and repeat” these permutations because as your audience grows, so should your message change to appeal to different personas. Of course so should the store page but let’s park that can of worms.

Whatever becomes more data-driven in 2021, creative or not, we need to demystify incrementality. In a business where there is no “official truth” (aside from what the stores pay you in revenues!) you have to establish the meaning of “lift” relevant to your business by answering a few simple questions (which could be cohorted by geo/channel/platform) e.g. freemium game :

How much more conversion to pay are we seeing from paid media?

How much more FTUE conversion is being observed by buying users?

How much is the revenue incremented by investing in both channel A and channel B or can we just invest in channel A?

We are going to have to step out of our comfort zone that ROAS that has provided us for years with a false sense of “deterministic security” based on widely adopted inaccurate attribution models. With lift driven KPIs we can build scorecards for every channel based on the weight of each KPI and invest in that media accordingly. We should also be able to understand better the “true value” that the SANs bring to the table without having to “default” to them as standard.

Last thing for 2021: talent management. As the damned 2020 taught us, there are pros and cons to Work From Home, but most importantly we have to learn how to manage and retain talent in these distributed virtual teams. Most talent practices are constrained by physical presence and now we must strive to appreciate what matters to employees not just in the office but also at home. Management must get “personal” as we enter each other’s homes and OKRs should take care of one’s health and family as much as the business.

The Battle pass type monetization will grow in 2021 as it proves to be a model that is more compatible with the post-IDFA UA world. Games will be looking for higher conversion at lower price points because UA teams won’t be able to afford to bet $50 to acquire a whale when they can’t target historical monetizers. This will be especially true for hardcore games, which will need to shift their monetization strategy to focus more on the top of the funnel.

Lastly, this could also impact the nature of M&A in 2021, where more companies will be looking to acquire big user bases to potentially own their IDFVs.

2021 is likely to be a year of foundational stabilization: Apple disturbed the status quo, and the major participants in the mobile advertising ecosystem will need to establish new operating norms. This will entail a great deal of experimentation and trial-and-error, some of which may result in novel new advertising products and services.

ATT will be made mandatory in March. I don’t believe that Apple will offer any additional delays to ATT implementation or change its scope, and developers will need to implement ATT as it is currently understood. No substantive workarounds or loopholes will surface that allow developers to evade the impact of ATT.

App advertising spend on iOS will contract by 30-40% over the course of Q2 following the rollout of ATT. Advertisers will immediately scale their spend back once ATT is made mandatory as they observe how CPMs, install rates, etc. react. This pullback will persist over Q2 2021 and will be meaningful: 30-40%.

Advertisers with products in the “broad middle” will scale their ad spend in the second half of 2021. CPMs will decrease as competition for the best-monetizing users abates (since they are no longer specifically targetable), but some companies with products that fit into the “broad middle” of consumer appeal may not see their funnel conversion metrics degrade to the same degree, allowing them to scale spend.

Demand for PMPs and programmatic direct placements will increase. Large, multi-product companies will recognize the need to in-house programmatic advertising, with contextual analysis being seen as a competitive advantage. PMPs will become increasingly popular as companies seek to buy relevant, pre-vetted traffic, and so will direct placements.

Facebook experiments with projects that blunt the impact of ATT and marginally increase efficiency. Facebook will test a number of methods for improving ad targeting with contextual or aggregated signals and differential privacy techniques, some of which may be successful at marginally winning back some of the efficiency lost with ATT. I also think Facebook will make more aggressive moves in shifting content either entirely to within its app (eg. Facebook / IG shopping, which takes place in FB-loaded modals and is entirely first-party) or on the open web, such as with its new gaming platform. The war between Facebook and Apple will intensify, accelerating the world closer to the future of mobile content platforms.

Android becomes the new battleground for advertising inventory and some apps abandon iOS advertising altogether. Android might become the only platform on which certain types of apps are able to capably advertise; as some developers shift their focus to more broadly-appealing content themes, others simply stop advertising on iOS and focus exclusively on Android as their apps. The most attractive Android inventory becomes even more competitive than top-tier iOS inventory.

D2C advertising spend decreases by as much as 50%. Facebook dropped a bombshell on the advertising industry last week when it announced that app-to-web campaigns would be impacted by ATT restrictions, which means that D2C campaigns will become much less efficient as ad performance is aggregated at the campaign level. Most D2C companies are almost entirely dependent on Facebook’s ability to target historical spenders and email lookalikes for growth, and this change to app-to-web targeting and measurement will imperil the D2C business model.

Google will announce a privacy preservation policy with respect to the GAID near the end of 2021, but it won’t be as impactful as ATT. I don’t think that Google will fully deprecate the GAID, instead electing to keep it hidden from advertisers while still processing it via Firebase and passing it to ad networks (including its own!).

A history lesson: There are free people, they are dancers. Free people dance, captive people do not dance. Dancing is the most sincerely human form of freedom.

There are terror soldiers who hunt and capture free people. There is a feast after the hunt. At the feast, the children sit at a table suitable for children, while the adults sit at the adult table.

The adults take the best parts of the hunted meat, the white meat. The children get the dark meat, the drumsticks, thighs, other dark meat.

The table where the children sit is called "the Kiddie Table". The meat that the children get, is also called "Kiddie Table" because that is what is served there at the "Kiddie Table".

There is a party that happens from time to time, before the feast, where the hunt for the free people is done. Many are lured to the sounds of music, cheering, people gathered at a festive event as the festivities are presented, and the sound can be heard through the air all over the shire.

There are dancers at the festive event, where hunting happens. Later, at the feast, at the adult table, the stories are told of the festival. Each adult tells how they "Danced on the Tables" at the party.

Think about that. Add a sword.

You should understand that two kinds of free people are at the festive event where the table dancing happened. There are the event planners, and there are the people who heard that the event was happening. Both groups, it turns out, are free to do as they choose. Free to lure victims, and others who are free to be victims. The adults at the adult table eat the best parts of the victims, while the children are served Kiddie Table at the Kiddie Table, arms, legs, hands, feet, are Kiddie Table.

The meat is stored in a "Hibachi" until it's time for the feast. It's an ice, chest with salted water and meat inside.

The terms Kiddie Table and Hibachi often are used simultaneously, one thing requires the other thing, so, if you listen closely to what is happening around you, you may have opportunity to learn on your own, before the party is started. I have known those two details for most of my life, since the 1960's. The entire Twitter Verified Accounts line-up are the commanders for the terror army, they all work in aggregate to say a single message, and there are many aggregates, many messages.

It's not easy to do, but the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Twitter is "Time Warp Terror". That throws a giant obstacle into the deciphering. The tweets are repeated, identical from 2008 when they were first presented, so, the instructions are present in the coded tweets, but the location is not present, sometimes the time of day is there, but not the place or town where attack is planned.

Unfortunately I have not found the key to the location information. That is going to be coming from a more live source somewhere other than twitter, I think.

Another way to explain similar idea is with a real terror scenario called "Crumpled napkin".

Local update: 5:16 pm: I took a walk to the mailbox just now. There on the road was Myers in their car, sitting at the cross-roads corner at the Y in the road in front of the South-East corner of my property. Then, a MedDems member from 598 Manning drove by quick, to reach Myers there at the corner, a brief pow-wow took place between the SAG MedDems, and the SDA Myers at the cross-roads.

I have a implanted microphone transmitter that was put into my jaw by the terror army at a dentist visit after I was shot in the face in 2011. The thing has been broadcasting every thing I say since then.

Also, Centurylink ISP is part of the SAG terror. They use the Symantec norton product master copy to access computers of anyone who uses the Centurylink network. So, my computer, and yours, is equipped with two kinds of wireless capability, one is Wifi to a Wifi modem, the other is blue-tooth capability. Centurylink operatives are able to easily access my computer and yours through the DSL network, they can easily change the settings for Wifi and Blue-Tooth of the computer. They are able to reverse the setting indicators too, such that when you turn off the blue-tooth, and turn off the Wifi, the indicators say they are off, you believe they are off because you turned all of that off, and make sure that it’s all turned off.

Centurylink turns all of that stuff on, while also reversing the indicators, that say the wireless is off, when it’s all really turned on, and is broadcasting with no possible way to stop the broadcast because there is no one watching the baby.

Meanwhile, the terror bastards are sitting in the car, in blue-tooth range, stealing what I write as it is written, they are faster at typing than I am, can change the information, post it somewhere else, to fool the nsa fools who insist on being fooled all of the time by trusting the local authorities.

That’s what happened. MedDems warned Myers that I was coming outside so they drove away from the blue-tooth listening zone at the cross-roads.

It’s sort of like a rolling bomb that does not explode. The SAG terror has been using remote control bait cars ever since the introduction of cruise control. The cruise control of a car is a basis on which a fully remote control car is modified. They need to incorporate a brake, and a reverse, and a way to engage the gears to modify a cruise control car into a remote control car. In the 1990′s, they were installing a brake on the drive shaftif the vehicle. See Datsun Truck, 520 and 521 models to see how a drive shaft brake works. I don‘t know how the arrange the gear engagement remotely, or reverse, except that later made transmissions are made with an electronically engaged reverse that is operated electronically by design from the factory, does not rely on linkage. So, later model transmissions are built for access to a remote application that way.

There are many ways that a remote control bait car can serve the terror army when the driver and passenger are already dead people who are stuffed, taxidermy applied, and look very alive, in a car that is operated by someone who is in visual range of the car as it goes down the road, luring victims. Boeing 737 MAX airplanes. We are all brainwashed to believe all of the airplanes are broken, don‘t work, can‘t fly, are grounded, and unusable.

There is nothing wrong with the airplanes. Two airplanes crashed, we were told, by newsmedia. That means the airplanes are just fine, they are parked, or are being used, while everyone assumes they are broken. The 737′s are just repurposed is all, but for what?

Some can be used right now, they look like other airplanes do, so, in the sky no one is going to differentiate them from some other airplane.

On the ground, they can squeeze into a line-up at a airport un-noticed, the Screen Actor Guild took over the air-traffic controllers long ago, when the Department of Homeland Security was invented by W. Bush, so, those guys are not going to say when a 737 MAX is in the line-up on the runway.

The thing I want to focus on here is two things, that the airplanes could have been modified for carrying and releasing a lot of nitrous/Medazolam mixture over geographic regions to assist Amazon Prime ground crews with a prime of the area. Department of Transportation in the states is also part of what I say is the Amazon Prime Ground Crew for attacking by the SAG/Britain/Vatican agenda.

I don‘t specifics for that beyond being at Boeing Seattle on a tour on the day that the place was hijacked by men who did not speak English and had machine guns. The killed the office workers while me and my family was there. Payroll office workers are specifically what I recall about that.

So, the other thing I do have some specifics about, and that is an escape plan for the SAG leadership they laid out as a failsafe in event that something goes wrong and they need to go fugitive. That plan includes a few layers of threat to them, where the first layer is that they go to Puerto Rico, either physically, or symbolically with some news story about Puerto Rico, such as a lot of Democrat congressional terror bastards who all went there to watch Hamilton not long ago. I suggest that was a level one threat to them that prompted the symbolic excursion to Puerto Rico where they watched a Broadway play in a tropical paradise.

The next level of threat, should they need to, is to go to Costa Rica, either symbolically or physically. Same as the Puerto Rico escape, but farther away, and to a place that is said to be home to many retired US Military service persons. That, in my opinion, is the level of when the mass murder of our US Military becomes known, and of course the SAG and Congress all arranged that to happen, but is not yet public knowledge. So, if they are found to have been involved with that, then, the plan is to head for Costa Rica (”Co-Star Eureka! They found us”). So, those 737 MAX airplanes that are just sitting around start to become very handy with this kind of knowledge.

The way this escape plan works is to allow that the leadership can go hide somewhere if nsa finds out about what SAG (Congress) has done. They newsmedia presents a story about Costa Rica, and some other information, avd that kicks in a failsafe damage control set of circumstances that are all prearranged to solve that kind of problem, has much complexity, designed to overwhelm investigative persons, make detour, distraction, delay, and some lures into dangerous traps where the investigative people are taken out of the picture. Damage control is done by the SDA terror army as the SAG leaders are soaking up the sunshine in a tropical paradise in Costa Rica and have a lot of 737 MAX airplanes to cart them around until the dust settles. The airplanes also serve as a part to the damage control on their own somehow I am sure. They will use up every advantage those airplanes can offer.

So, the last and final exit SAG on the run fugitive actors, Musicians, Clowns and Magicians is Guiana, Suriname, and French Guiana at the north Eastern part of South America.

11-29-2020: 6:04 pm: That above is example of British SIS GCHQ terror code, uncoded enough to see that it’s real terror code. I did a sloppy job of unraveling it, and could go back through there to clean it up, but I am not going to do that.

What you see is a reflection on a time and place where changes occurred at l O Downing, the place was repurposed, the existing pirate ship at the time was recommissioned as a pirate submarine, and the Beatles song is part of that recommissioning.

Taskade is The Only App You Need for Work-Life Productivity

Forget email drafts, notes apps and to-do list managers: Taskade does all that and more

Everything I need to keep my life running is stored online. Somewhere. I just can’t find it.

I’m talking about all the account numbers, meeting notes, to-do lists, contact information and column drafts I need to see every day. Plus the recipes I want to cook, wines I need to try, and YouTube videos I ought to watch. Some of that stuff lives in my email inbox, and some in Google Docs. Then there are my Pinterest boards, miscellaneous bookmarks and the Evernote account I can never organize coherently.

In theory, the internet makes it easier than ever to keep everything I need a few taps away. In reality, the internet has a way of fragmenting our lives. It’s like I wrote everything in a notebook and then got drunk, ripped out each page and hid them in different places around my house.

Taskade makes a great tool for simple to-do lists, and you can use photos, emojis and stock art to spruce them up.

Over the past few weeks, an app called Taskade has helped me turn chaos into order. Taskade combines many of the best features of Google Docs, Excel and Dropbox, along with lots of task-management and organizational tools. Taskade Labs Chief Executive Ivan Zhao describes the product as “the next generation of Microsoft Office,” which is a little hyperbolic and a lot ambitious. But it is the best life-organization tool I’ve tried.

Taskade combines the features of a note-taking app, a task-management app and a spreadsheet tool the way that Steve Jobs combined an iPod, a cellphone and a web browser into the iPhone: All these tools work together to create something more than its parts.

I should mention that Taskade is fairly expensive: It has a limited free tier and costs $8 a month for heavy use. Still, it might pay for itself in the apps it replaces, and I’ve found it easily worth the cost.

I now have a page with all my airline and hotel loyalty numbers in a bulleted list, above a photo of my dental insurance card and an embedded map with directions to my dentist’s office. I made databases with all the movies, books, TV shows, and YouTube videos I need to get to—each cell opens to a rich document with my notes and thoughts. I used to need five separate apps to keep all this stuff straight. Now it’s all in Taskade, a few clicks or a simple search away.

Block by Block

It might be easier to think of Taskade is a super-simple website builder than a productivity app.

When you open a new page in the app, you’re really creating a blank grid onto which you can place and arrange just about anything. The app’s basic element is the block, which could be a paragraph of text, a bulleted list, a table, an image, a code snippet, a YouTube video, a PDF and more. You insert blocks with a tap or keyboard shortcut and then reorder and organize these to your heart’s content. You can easily change the nature of a block, too. For instance, you can select a bunch of text and turn it into a to-do list.

Taskade’s basic element is the block, which takes many forms: text, links, images, bookmarks and more.

Taskade is like chess: easy to learn, hard to master. The app itself looks fairly familiar, with a sidebar on the left and your open page on the right. It has a few aesthetic niceties, like the option to add a cover photo to the top of any page.

When you first open the app, though, it doesn’t do enough to help you understand everything it can do. Even after weeks of using Taskade daily, I’m only now figuring out the most efficient ways to do things while trying to avoid making terrible layout decisions. Do I really need a full-page photo inside my to-do list? My advice: Make heavy use of Taskade’s templates, because they help you layout pages and show what the app’s capable of.

There are native Taskade apps for Windows, Mac and iOS. Mr Zhao says an Android app should be available within weeks. The web app works beautifully on desktop and mobile, too, and it’s the exact same experience no matter which platform you’re using.

Taskade is very dependent on internet connectivity. It works offline only with pages you’ve opened recently while connected—which means all you can do is cross your fingers every time you open Taskade on a plane. On the upside, you can embed tweets and YouTube videos, even entire webpages, within a Taskade document.

Though I use Taskade to stay on top of my own work and life (and you should too), Taskade is designed for business teams. It offers collaborative editing, inline comments and useful tools for managing permissions and assigning tasks. If you use Slack, you can get alerts every time someone comments on or changes a Taskade document. It isn’t a substitute for Slack or Salesforce, but it can replace many of the tools so many companies use to store and share information.

One-stop Shop

Matt Galligan, the founder of the Picks and Shovels Co., a cryptocurrency services startup, offered a useful metaphor for Taskade. He says using the app is akin to shopping on Amazon. Before, “stores specialized,” he said, “and they did a good job.” Then Amazon came along and aggregated everything. It maybe wasn’t the best store for any single thing, but the one-stop convenience made it unbeatable.

That’s just it: Taskade isn’t as powerful a spreadsheet tool as Excel, and it doesn’t have some of the task-management features I want—when a task is due, I would like an alert, for instance. (Taskade says that’s coming.) Yet the app has helped me whittle the places I keep stuff down to just two. I can’t stop email from coming in; I can put everything else in Taskade.

There are lots left for the Taskade team to do, of course. In addition to task reminders, it’s also working on calendar sync, PowerPoint-style presentation features, a web clipper, better offline support and that Android app. It’s also planning to support services such as Zapier and If This Then That (IFTTT), which help move data between apps. But it already does more than any of its competitors.

For years, I’ve bounced around various note-taking apps and productivity tools, never quite happy. Evernote makes it easy to capture information, but I never liked the interface. Google Docs and Keep don’t offer enough features. Trello, Asana and other project-management software don’t work for note-taking.

Taskade fuses the best of each—and others—into a rare renaissance app, proficient in countless methods of creation and organization. I can’t put a price on the peace of mind that comes from an unfragmented life. Wait, yes I can: It’s eight bucks a month.

Believe me, I’m old enough to know that sometimes words are just shifting sand, and it is often impossible to gain footing. I’ve learned to be satisfied with the effort, because I know how impossible it can be. As much as I adore language, it is sometimes rubbish at communicating all that should be said, or conveys too much. Humans have to divulge so much that is unnecessary just to convey a tiny piece of information. You’d be amazed how much time it takes for proper words to be arranged to meet a new situation for the first time.The other day I saw an old woman who had obvious difficulty walking. She was carrying a shopping sack and hobbling with a cane. One of the store clerks came over to her and said “Hello ma’am! I don’t want to presume anything about your mobility, but I know that shopping trips take a while. Would you like to use one of our scooters so that everything is easier? It holds your groceries for you too!” And I could see that the old woman had intended to become defensive, but the “I don’t want to presume anything” made her realize that it was merely an offer that respected her difficulty and offered a solution. She said “I wouldn’t know the first thing about driving one of those!” And the clerk laughed and said “They only have three controls, and as long as you can use your thumb, you can do it! If you want, I can go around with you and help you get things off the shelves? Or I can just show you how to use it!” The lady took a training course on the scooter, got the hang of it, and then the clerk followed along beside her chatting, as if he had somewhere else he was going, but was just having the conversation to have it, but he was actually watching her very carefully and waiting for her to get her confidence. As soon as she appeared to have it, he excused himself and went back to his other tasks. It was beautifully handled, and I’ve seen such a thing seldom in all my years. Especially from strange young people.It’s taken that long, hundreds of years of combined and aggregated education for humans to learn to use words in a way that isn’t condescending. I’m not surprised that it takes humans a while to figure out what they should mention, how, and in what context. They often tend to be unsettled by me, afraid, or they assume things about me that put them on edge. I can only behave as I’ve always done, and wait to see if they gain their feet.Patience is the curse of the aged. There’s no other choice but rage, and rage can be toxic for all concerned. It has its uses, but seldom solves anything on its own.I am resigned to it.

Datafold is solving the chaos of data engineering

It seemed so simple. A small schema issue in a database was wrecking a feature in the app, increasing latency and degrading the user experience. The resident data engineer pops in a fix to amend the schema, and everything seems fine — for now. Unbeknownst to them, that small fix completely clobbered all the dashboards used by the company’s leadership. Finance is down, ops is pissed, and the CEO — well, they don’t even know whether the company is online.

For data engineers, it’s not just a recurring nightmare — it’s a day-to-day reality. A decade plus into that whole “data is the new oil” claptrap, and we’re still managing data piecemeal and without proper systems and controls. Data lakes have become data oceans and data warehouses have become … well, whatever the massive version of a warehouse is called (a waremansion I guess). Data engineers bridge the gap between the messy world of real life and the precise nature of code, and they need much better tools to do their jobs.

As TechCrunch’s unofficial data engineer, I’ve personally struggled with many of these same problems. And so that’s what drew me into Datafold.

Datafold is a brand-new platform for managing the quality assurance of data. Much in the way that a software platform has QA and continuous integration tools to ensure that code functions as expected, Datafold integrates across data sources to ensure that changes in the schema of one table doesn’t knock out functionality somewhere else.

Founder Gleb Mezhanskiy knows these problems firsthand. He’s informed from his time at Lyft, where he was a data scientist and data engineer, and later transformed into a product manager “focused on the productivity of data professionals.” The idea was that as Lyft expanded, it needed much better pipelines and tooling around its data to remain competitive with Uber and others in its space.

His lessons from Lyft inform Datafold’s current focus. Mezhanskiy explained that the platform sits in the connections between all data sources and their outlets. There are two challenges to solve here. First, “data is changing, every day you get new data, and the shape of it can be very different either for business reasons or because your data sources can be broken.” And second, “the old code that is used by companies to transform this data is also changing very rapidly because companies are building new products, they are refactoring their features … a lot of errors can happen.”

In equation form: messy reality + chaos in data engineering = unhappy data end users.

With Datafold, changes made by data engineers in their extractions and transformations can be compared for unintentional changes. For instance, maybe a function that formerly returned an integer now returns a text string, an accidental mistake introduced by the engineer. Rather than wait until BI tools flop and a bunch of alerts come in from managers, Datafold will indicate that there is likely some sort of problem, and identify what happened.

The key efficiency here is that Datafold aggregates changes in datasets — even datasets with billions of entries — into summaries so that data engineers can understand even subtle flaws. The goal is that even if an error transpires in 0.1% of cases, Datafold will be able to identify that issue and also bring a summary of it to the data engineer for response.

Datafold is entering a market that is, quite frankly, as chaotic as the data being processed. It sits in the key middle layer of the data stack — it’s not the data lake or data warehouse for storing data, and it isn’t the end user BI tools like a Looker, Tableau or many others. Instead, it’s part of a number of tools available for data engineers to manage and monitor their data flows to ensure consistency and quality.

The startup is targeting companies with at least 20 people on their data team — that’s the sweet spot where a data team has enough scale and resources that they are going to be concerned with data quality.

Today Datafold is three people, and will be debuting officially at YC’s Demo Day later this month. Its ultimate dream is a world where data engineers never again have to get an overnight page to fix a data quality issue. If you’ve been there, you know precisely why such a product is valuable.

Big data holds great promise: structured and unstructured data harvested, processes and analysed in near-real-time by organisations sifting for new opportunities or seeking to refine existing activities. Data is pouring in: from sensors, shoppers, IoT, social and more with companies investing in big-data projects, from data lakes and processing frameworks like Hadoop to analytics tools and Intel hardware.

As we pump increasing amounts of data into these systems, how we source and manage that information is becoming increasingly important.

Users can take advantage of the increased analytical computing power offered by scale-out configurations of x86 processors, but not all companies have been fastidious about data quality.

That might not sound like a problem, but reliable foundations are required in this new world and information that might not be accurate could cause problems down the line. You are a financial services firm selling insurance based on customers’ combined fit-bit and shopping data: what if you deny somebody a policy because but data you founded that decision on was somehow wrong – it became corrupted somewhere during creation, transmission, storage or analysis?

“Not much attention was paid to data,” according to Melanie Mecca, who directs data management products and services at the CMMI Institute, a Carnegie Mellon organization that focuses on best technology practice, on our new desire for data. “It was seen as the toothpaste in the tube of features, technology and automated capabilities. The data itself was never viewed as the foundation and the life blood of the organization’s business knowledge. That is why it has been neglected.”

A standard for data assurance?

One organization looking to tackle this is National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK’s national measurement standards laboratory and home to the country’s largest applied physics organisation. NPL is working on introducing a systematic approach to create a measurable level of confidence in data.

“We’re trying to apply our way of thinking that comes from the measurement domain to thinking about how it applies to the digital domain,” says NPL Fellow Alistair Forbes.

When thinking about big data quality, NPL looks at the four Cs: collection, connection, comprehension and confidence.

Collection means verifying the source of the data and assessing its credibility and accuracy. Taking data from an unverified source with no measurement of data quality is a bad idea. Connection looks how the data was transported and whether there was proper error correction in the event of interference.

Comprehension means ensuring the data “properly,” according to Neil Stansfield, head of the digital sector at NPL. “When we’re doing analytics, using data from lots of sources, how do we ensure that uncertainty propagation through those data sources is properly understood,” he says.

Today, the best tool for modeling that propagation is the Guide to Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), which was developed by NPL and the International community. It describes how uncertainty propagates across different sensors and data sources, and what that means for decision making.

“If you’re trying to guide people to collect information, put it together and use it, this is how uncertainties will flow,” says Stansfield. “So when you do system level design, you can get it right first time.”

Forbes describes it as a relatively narrow guide, and NPL is doing the research to expand it beyond how uncertainty spreads, to how much there is.

“We’re going from a paradigm of uncertainty propagation to a paradigm of uncertainty quantification, which is a comprehensive assessment of where the uncertainty sources are and trying to account for them using better statistical tools,” he says.

Today, we measure the certainty of something by modeling it, which becomes more difficult as the model becomes more complex. NPL is developing a methodology to quantify the uncertainty associated with a model. It is mainly targeting the engineering domain, but also wants to address other areas from satellite imaging to life sciences.

NPL is also exploring how metadata around data quality might be stored at a machine-readable level, to make this data more accessible.

While NPL focuses on confidence in source data, others are helping to ensure that it is managed properly in scientific applications. For example, Intel – who you might normally associate with silicon engineering – has been working with a number of partners on the subject of data management.

Intel has, for example, partnered with the US Department of Energy’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and five Intel Parallel Computing Centers (IPCCs) to create a Big Data Center (BDC). This will work on creating robust infrastructures for data management.

Tech names are also seeking sector-specific solutions: Intel this summer announced with carmaker Toyota and others a big-data, the creation of the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium. The group will work on standards, best practices and architectures for emerging mobile technologies within the car sector.

Looking further up the big data stack

Intel has been working on the stack, too, partnering with Hadoop-specialist Cloudera on open-source enterprise data management by tuning the data-crunching platform on Intel architectures. Hadoop is becoming an industry standard big-data processing platform while Intel accounts for more than 90 per cent of the global data-center market, meaning a potentially overlap between the two. Intel and Hortonworks are developing a joint roadmap, to accelerate the performance of encryption and decryption, data compression and decompression, caching and I/O-intensive workloads.

SAS, meanwhile, is working on metrics that can than help improve quality management in a big data environment. Metrics often used in client engagements include completeness, consistency and accuracy, says Ron Agresta, director of product management for data management there. “A lot of organizations will categorise what they’re looking for and the check they’re making along those lines so that they can aggregate those and roll them up to dashboards,” he says. However, he adds that one customer’s requirements for these metrics might be different to another’s depending on what they’re using the data for.

“I don’t think we’re seeing any standard way to go about data management in this current environment,” says his colleague Todd Wright, senior product marketing manager for data management at SAS. Where standards do exist for ensuring big data quality, they’re handled at a sector-specific level in heavily-regulated areas like healthcare, he adds.

“Every organization, even in the same industries, has a variety of issues that they’re trying to tackle, and especially among vendors there is no standard way of tackling these issues around big data. We’ve taken it case by case,” he says.

Frameworks for data quality and governance are also there at a higher level. Mecca’s organization publishes its Data Management Maturity (DMM). It focuses on the upper tier of our management stack, looking at the techniques that people use to ensure quality and consistency in their data.

“These are practices that people have to do,” she says, arguing that the organization didn’t come at from a technology perspective. “In terms of making decisions about the data, that’s a person process.” The DMM looks at areas such as data management (the creation of a business glossary for data and a metadata repository), data governance, and data quality.

The EDM Council also has its own framework for effectively managing big data, called the Data Management Capability Assessment Model (DCAM). “They have a circular chart with various aspects of data quality that are assessed,” says Mike Bennett, director of semantics and standards for the EDM Council.

Big data offers grand potential, for greater insight and for new business, but as more devices are connected and data is merged there grows the obvious potential for mistakes. There is missing an overall lack of standards or a consensus on management of data that could help avoid these potential issues.

As vendors and researchers apply more expertise to helping customers improve the quality and management of their data, there’s hope that common agreement will become a reality.

Indeed, that reality may become a necessity. If data is the new oil, something that’s critical to a new way of doing business, it’ll become important to not just identify any mistakes in data but also be able to trace them back to their origin. That’ll be vital for the sake of visibility and accountablity. Like Sarbanes Oxley a generation before, data standards will become a matter of business necessity: a regulatory requirement, a way of not just measuring you are compliant but of also proving it.

Meet 500 Startups’ 26th batch of startups

Following TechCrunch’s coverage of 500 Startups’ 25th batch (and numbers 24, 23, 22, and 21, in case you wanted to go back in time), today we’re saying hello to the accelerator’s 26th cohort.

500 Startups, in case you weren’t aware, is a seed-stage accelerator and a collection of venture funds. The group, now with a few dozen accelerator batches under its belt, has several thousand companies in its universe. 500’s 26th cohort contains 29 companies, including a handful that we’d already heard of (Juked.gg, to pick one).

Data, diversity

Before we get to the startups themselves, a few notes. To get a handle on the companies included in the batch, TechCrunch spoke with Aaron Blumenthal, a venture partner at the firm. After sharing a number of batch metrics with TechCrunch, we pressed for a bit more detail on the makeup of the startups in the group.

Here’s a hybrid of our notes, and his details (condensed and edited for clarity), on the batch that the venture partner called “another rung on the ladder of our diversity and inclusion state of mind”:

37% of the startups are international. According to Blumenthal, “this particular batch from the ‘outside United States perspective’ is a little bit smaller — we usually see north of 50% outside the United States.”

30% of the companies’ founding teams include a woman. TechCrunch asked Blumenthal if that number was up, flat or down, to which he responded that 500’s “average is usually in the mid 30s or so. Our last batch, for example, was 26% female. And this one is more [in] that direction which, of course, we are a fan of.”

70% of the founding teams of the batch “have one or more founders who identify as a racial minority,” according to the firm.

It would be interesting to see a more granular breakdown for future cohorts, but the information provided was more than I expected, and the numbers a bit better. And on the subject of numbers, Crunchbase has recorded 215 exits for 500 Startups. From its accelerator, 500 cites TalkDesk and Shippo as highlights.

Turning to mechanics, 500 Startups invests $150,000 apiece into its accelerator companies for 6% of their equity, and charges a $37,500 for the program itself. So, in effect, it’s a bit less capital for the same ownership percentage.

What else? Just that we’re walking into demo day season. 500 Startups will host the showcase for its 26th batch on March 19. Y Combinator will hold its own on March 23 and 24. The Techstars website defeated my hunt for its next demo day, but in the name of fairness, it’s probably hosting one around the same time somewhere in the world.

Briza: Provides an insurance-as-a-service API that enables instant quoting, binding and issuance of commercial insurance policies.

Butlr: Through sensor networks and AI, Butlr helps retail stores increase in-store sales by applying real-time customer behavior analytics.

CENOS: Easy-to-use simulation software that allows engineers to iterate designs faster than physical prototypes for induction heating and antenna design, among others.

Connected Analytics: Nigeria-based company helping businesses and banks integrate data analytics and rewards in order to retain customers and increase revenue.

Fakespot: Eliminates misinformation and deceptive content on e-commerce sites for consumers, brands and platforms.

GamerzClass: Offers exclusive esports masterclasses with professionals to shape the future of gaming.

Get on Board: Recruitment platform that connects global companies with the best Latin American tech talent.

Juked: Aggregates information on esports games, including live streams, player profiles, scores and calendars to make esports easier to watch and to promote engagement.

Kyndoo: Helps advertisers weed out fraudulent social media influencers, and provides data around their authenticity and performance.

The Atlas: An online community of city officials crowdsourcing ideas that is modernizing the $1.6 trillion local government market.

Thematic: Matches content creators who need great songs for their videos with music artists who need influencer marketing.

Trash Warrior: Offers on-demand junk removal services for businesses. Customers can book services online for affordable pricing and reliable quality.

Userpilot: Helps software product managers personalize the in-app experience across the user journey at scale.

Living in the unicorn era as we have now for some time, it’s easy to lose track of the earliest-stages of startup investment. But accelerators do have a history of helping birth some impressive companies. So it’s worth paying attention. More when we get to the various demo days.
