Just a celebrity [knj X reader]
Tumblr media
A/n: Hi, I know it’s been a while since my last post, I legit have no excuse except that it’s procrastination and that I had no ideas to go by, I still don’t, but I’m trying my best to write as much as I can now. I have a fanfic in the works that I have coming up and it’s hard to write each chapter without it being mostly filler and actually relevant to the story, you know? It’s actually something that’s been in the works for almost 4. Fucking. Years. and I’m just now writing most of the chapters I have planned. It’s somewhat of a short story too which I’m glad because I was really worried it would be too long and dragged out with said filler but what I do have is a character introduction to the characters. It’s not all of them but it’s at least something to begin the story so once it’s done, I can post it and show you guys what I’m working on. But anyways I’m getting sidetracked. This was originally supposed to be for an imagine but it became too long and I decided it should be its own story so enjoy.
Warnings: [TW // Mentions of forced strict diet, and starvation, Namjoon really wants to eat but can’t because of his company, description of being underweight. Fluff with bits of angst. Y/n is a cynical bitch to Namjoon in the beginning but warms up to him at the end of their first encounter. It’s a fluffy relationship at the end. If I’m missing any TW, please let me know.]
Word count: 1.8k
Your first interaction with Namjoon was during his concerts in Korea since you were studying abroad and your friend, whom you’ve met online and was the sole reason why you wanted to move here, told you about a K-pop group that had debuted a while ago and it’s safe to say that you...didn’t care too much for their music and you only went to their concert to support your friend who was quickly becoming a big fan of them. It’s a unique story, really, it’s not your simple story of a fangirl who goes to some concert and one of the members sees them in the audience and brings them backstage. No, this was completely different. You never had the desire about fantasizing idols when you were younger, now that’s not to say that you didn’t enjoy music because you did, hell, you even own band merch that you still proudly wear but you never found them to be attractive like most fans would and always saw them just as artists.
While Namjoon did spot you and your friend in the crowd, he didn’t tell some security guard so you could exchange phone numbers – it was by complete accident and fate one day when you were walking home from the grocery store to pick up some food for you and your friend until you heard someone bolting towards you, running away from something that seemed serious. Annoyed and a bit taken back by his actions at first, you glance behind you not expecting much but what you didn’t expect was the amount of crazed fangirls heading your way. Gasping as you saw the hurdle of fans, your feet were stuck planted on the ground, standing there frozen with fear as the young, violent fans inched closer and closer, pushing each other around like a bunch of wild animals, until you felt the warmth of someone’s hand, presumably the same guy from earlier.
“Come on, don’t just stand there like a crazy person! I know a place where we can get rid of them!” He sounded young, about your age, the young musician took your hand in his and dragged you with him.
And that’s how you became stuck with each other behind some gritty, old building, trash bins and garbage all over the bleak scenery, you and the young musician huddled up together in-between two dumpsters as the loud and obnoxious cheers of fans faded out into the air. Both sighing with relief, you look up at him unimpressed.
“I guess this is your everyday lifestyle?” You question the young star and he lets out a heavy sigh, still trying to catch his breath from running so fast. It probably didn’t help matters that he was also dragging you along with him.
“You haven’t seen the worst of it. I usually find these girls in my room.” He tells you nonchalantly, like he’s used to it at this point.
“Shouldn’t that be considered trespassing?”
“Yeah but there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m a big star around here and what these girls want, they’ll sure as hell get it.”
“Wow. And here I thought you were just another puppet for the music industry.” You reply back with a snarky undertone, lifting yourself up from the ground and wiping any muck and dirt left on your clothes. The young musician didn’t take your words kindly and narrowed his eyebrows together.
“Hey listen, it’s not as easy as you may think. Just be thankful you’re still alive because if they had caught you, you would’ve been roadkill by now.” He commented as if it was a statement of fact.
“I barely know you!” You argued, lifting your arms up to emphasize your point.
“Doesn’t matter to them. They see some girl out with a popular celebrity, they become lions and you’re their prey.”
You roll at his comment, thinking he’s just over-exaggerating. “Well thank you for the joyride, but I really should get back to my apartment.”
“What did you get?” He asks curiously as he stares at your bag full of food, he sounded like a kid who saw a bag full of candy on Halloween.
“Black bean noodles with rice on the side.” You explain to him simply, going over to make sure you got exactly what you needed and it didn’t fall out while you were running.
The man rests his hand against his stomach, it begins rumbling with hunger as he heard those three words. He hasn’t eaten since yesterday because of the intense and strict schedule his company has forced him to go through and he would be lying right now if he said he wasn’t hungry. “Black bean noodles? That sounds really good! That’s one of my favorite dishes, I haven’t had something like that in a while.”
You cross your arms, thinking it was his way of attempting to relate to you on some level. “Oh please, you’re a star! I bet you eat everything that’s handed to you.” You didn’t mean for it to come out so cold and bitter but you couldn’t help yourself, this was some celebrity and you’ve had a dislike for them because a lot of them are just stuck-up snobs who bully everyone lower class than them. The man gives you a look that even you couldn’t figure out, almost like he was envisioning the different foods he wished he could eat but couldn’t.
“I wish it were that simple. My company would kill me if they saw me eating anything like that, I’m forced to be on a strict diet and I’m barely allowed to eat a granola bar let alone noodles.”
Shocked by his explanation, you lower down your arms and began feeling bad for making such assumptions. You alternate looking between him and the food, clearly the thought of him starving had profusely disturbed you and you couldn’t help but send an expression of empathy and sadness to the lone musician. When you decided to speak up once more, your voice went up an octave, softly responding back in a more friendly manner, it was your discreet way of apologizing to the poor guy for being so harsh. “Really? I’ve never got it before. My friend likes them and practically begged me to get it for her.”
“Your friend has good taste. I guess I better get going, the fans have died down and it’s probably safe for me to leave. It was nice meeting you.”
“Yeah.” You mindlessly say as you watch him turn around before you could say anything else but when he rounds the corner, you quickly find your voice once again and call out to him, hoping he hasn’t left just yet. “Hey! If you want to, why don’t you come over and have dinner?”
He emerges from the side and leans against the bricks walls, hands in his pockets like he’s trying to protect himself from the freezing cold. “I can’t. Mostly because we don’t know each other and my company would kill me if I ate something that wasn’t on their list which is not many, to be honest.”
You slowly walk up towards him and look at him directly, taking a minute to look at his features. Poor thing looked like he was starving himself, even though you’ve never liked idols and found them all to be the same mindless puppets, it can’t be said for this guy. His cheek bones were hollowed, he’s skinny but to an unhealthy standard, and his eyes were baggy and darkened around the sockets, almost sunken in. You couldn’t tell if it was from a lack of sleep, starvation, or both. You hesitate for a moment before placing your mitten hand on top of his exposed hand. “But you’re starving. I can’t let you walk away and not have something.”
“I really can’t.”
“Please? I really don’t want to leave you in this state and the food I have isn’t that bad for you.”
After realizing that you’re not gonna give up on this and that you really were serious, he took a second to think it over. The thought really was enticing and he would be lying to himself once more if he said he wasn’t interested and desperate to eat anything, even if it came from a complete stranger, and he knew the food was legit because well, he can see it very clearly. “Well...alright.”
Once you heard his confirmation, you show a small smile and nodded with him. “Then it’s settled! Off to my house we go!” You latch onto his arm and begin walking home with him when another thought came to mind and halted in your steps. “Oh yeah, you’d better wear your disguise or we’re gonna be running from your psycho fans. I didn’t even catch your name.”
A chuckle came out of him as he placed his cap snug on his head and his mask covering half of his face, the only thing visible were his eyes, everything else made him seem like he was invincible to the public eye. “My name’s Namjoon.”
“So you’re that Namjoon guy my friend always talks about! Oh boy, this is gonna be fun.” You smirk to yourself as you two resume walking, the thought of your friend acting like a complete psycho in front of her bias entertained you.
Once you and Namjoon arrived at your place, your first instinct when you walked through the front door was give an explanation to your friend about why you were late and how worried she was. When you told her what had happened and showed her evidence to prove your case, her reaction was a lot more different than how she usually is. Throughout the evening, you and Namjoon got along fairly well—with the exception of your friend asking him benign questions about his career as an idol and if the other members are exactly the same in real life—you would frequently apologize for her erratic behavior as it worried you it would make the idol uncomfortable but he says it’s nothing compared to what he always hears from fangirls.
You and Namjoon surprisingly hit it off at the end of the night and you exchanged phone numbers when he was about to leave and promised each other you would meet again soon, this time without your friend in the picture. After he left, thoughts began to provoke and you wondered to yourself that maybe, just maybe, you were wrong about idols for once.
And now let’s look at today’s events, where are you and Namjoon right now in your relationship? Well one thing’s for certain is that you two are officially dating and have been since 2017, two years after your initial meeting. When you two became more comfortable with each other, he had invited you over to the dorms and introduced you to his members, to which they immediately welcomed you into their group with open arms, you’ve actually become best friends with some of them. It’s been a fun and crazy ride, exploring different countries and cultures had never crossed your mind before but now you can safely say that it’s been one of the best things to have ever happened in your life. You were fortunate to have somebody like him and him you because along the way, you have made each other better, Namjoon had taught you that being guarded and stubborn shouldn’t lock you out of the world and it’s okay to let your guard down sometimes, and you taught him that just because he was an idol doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be any boundaries and that he was a human being first.
Whenever the media caught wind of your relationship, they always thought it was just a fling and that the two of you would break up like everybody else in the industry but so far, you have proved each and every one of them wrong and now both you and Joon don’t give two shits about what everybody says.

More Top 20 Must-See Horror Movies
Especially now we are in isolation, who doesn’t crave a good horror movie to watch? To that purpose, I have created yet another top 20 must-see horror movies, along with why you should be watching them. So get into your comfy clothes and blanket, grab some popcorn, and settle in to watch these horror gems (WARNING: May contain spoilers).
Tumblr media
1) Ginger Snaps (2000)
I first saw this movie when I was fifteen years old, and, watching it recently, I was still impressed how it handles the perils of transitioning from teenhood to womanhood. Ginger Snaps follows the story of two outcast sisters, Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins), in the mindless suburban town of Bailey Downs. On the night of Ginger's first period, she is savagely attacked by a wild creature. Ginger Snaps is a terrifying movie with good character development, acting is convincing and it has a fast-paced story line. If you're into well-done horror movies Ginger Snaps is the movie for you. It is one of the best modern werewolf movies I have seen.
2) Annihilation (2018)
Drawing on mythology and body horror, Annihilation is an intelligent film that asks big questions and refuses to provide easy answers. It is Sci-fi horror at its best, boasting a very intriguing and unique idea whilst entertaining the viewer throughout the film. Definitely a must-watch.
3) Green Room (2015)
A punk rock band becomes trapped in a secluded venue after finding a scene of violence. For what they saw, the band themselves become targets of violence from a gang of white power skinheads who want to eliminate all evidence of the crime. Influenced by exploitation movies of the 1970s (and punk music of the 1980s), this horror-thriller is rooted in a gripping, grisly kind of realism without resorting to lazy coincidence or stupidity. This is again a fresh take on horror and worth a view.
4) 1922 (2017)
I learned from a great film critic many years back that your own best judgement of a movie is best discovered when you realise that you are still thinking of it many days later. This Stephen King film stays true to the iconic master with all the tell-tale signs of a Kings classic: A haunting grimness that lingers throughout the movie, a tragedy and of course, outstanding performances. The mother that returns from the dead leaves you in a crazy suspense of whether it is simply a dream, a man’s demented insanity, or an actual reality. Thomas Jane’s performance was stellar and totally believable as a farmer in rural America in 1922. He actually takes you through the movie as if you were part of him and what is going on. The message that Stephen King leaves you with is dreadfully powerful of how greed can destroy all. Definitely worth the watch, especially for Stephen King fans.
5) Evil Dead (1981; remake 2013)
Both versions of this movie are great, but I have a special fondness for the original, which was Sam Raimi’s directorial debut. The camerawork is amazing for a low-budget film, and the creepy atmosphere is eerily accurate. We feel Ash’s pain when his friend, sister and girlfriend are one-by-one changed into Deadites, and the ending keeps you guessing, and wanting, a sequel. I am quite a fan of the Evil Dead franchise actually, and have just finished watching the TV adaptation Ash vs. Evil Dead. I’m savouring the last episodes, and am sad that it got cancelled. I look forward to more from this franchise, hopefully in the not-to-distant future.
Tumblr media
6) Get Out (2017)
This film is unique, telling the tale of young black man who meets his white girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Jordan Peele’s film delivers a chilling satire of liberal racism in the US. More than just a standard-issue thriller, this brutal, smart movie is impeccably made, as well as surprising, shocking, and funny, while also offering a compassionate, thoughtful look at race. Expect only the very best a film has to offer, with a nasty twist at the end that you won’t see coming.
7) Hell Night (1981)
One of the best things about this movie which follows fraternity and sorority pledges who spend the night in a mansion haunted by victims of a family massacre is that it stars legendary Scream Queen of The Exorcist fame, Linda Blair. Other than that, prepare for a fun, wild ride, the way every good slasher movie should be.
8) Insidious Part 2 (2013)
I actually enjoyed this sequel more than the first movie, as it was less plodding and more action-packed, with an intriguing antagonist in the form of the mysterious “Bride in Black,” who turns out to be the evil spirit of serial killer Parker Crane, who, as we know from the previous movie (SPOILER ALERT) has taken over the body of Josh Lambert, and is fighting for control of his soul. I enjoyed seeing the return of Elise Rainier, who was (SPOILER ALERT AGAIN) killed off in the previous movie. James Wan directed this second helping even more masterfully than the first. A must-watch.
9) Sleepaway Camp (1983)
This is a campy slasher gem, where they cast real teenagers, which elevated the drama of the plot somewhat. Sleepaway Camp tells the story of a young girl named Angela who goes to Camp Arawak with her cousin Ricky. Once the two arrive at camp, a series of events/killings leads the campers to discover that there is a killer on the loose. Sleepaway Camp is not in any way intense or fast paced. However, even though many initially might look at as a “rip off” slasher film, the movie does get creative when it comes to the brutal killings and certain aspects to the film that no one saw coming. Including the jaw-dropping twist at the end. I’m not giving it away. You just have to watch it.
10) Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) (2006)
This movie takes full advantage of its snowy, secluded set-pieces, using Norway’s harsh winter landscape to masterfully build tension and heighten the sense of isolation. As horror movies go, Cold Prey is a slow-starter, committing the first third of its running time to investigating the signs of violence scattered throughout the hotel, allowing the characters to theorise about what pernicious acts may have taken place before the hotel’s abandonment. It begins at the intriguing yet deliberate pace of a psychological horror film as the sequestered friends, initially inebriated and giggly, explore the hotel and sharing secrets, but the movie’s party-hard atmosphere bursts open at the 40-minute mark to reveal a black horror centre. Slick and stylish, Cold Prey is a genuine pleasure to watch.
Tumblr media
11) The Hills Have Eyes (1977; remake 2006)
Even if it echoes a better film (namely, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), the original movie is still an important one to view for lovers of the horror genre.  This is a sometimes ghastly  - and occasionally absurd - shocker that really gets under one's skin. Though many critics initially despised the original outing, it has since been called one of the best horror movies of the 1970s. Scary-movie specialist Wes Craven made this viscerally-violent feature on a low budget, and some horror connoisseurs call it his best. Ultimately the "normal" people strike back with a ferocious blood-lust they didn't know they had, and the question is how much a "civilised" person can be pushed before one becomes a savage. Are the Carters really all that much "better" than Jupiter and his spawn? That is a question that you, as the audience member, are required to ponder.
12) The Dawn of the Dead (2004)
This remake of George A. Romero's 1978 sequel to Night of the Living Dead soups up the zombies, cranks up the gross factor to 11, and has a lot of cheeky in-jokes about its predecessor. In comparison with the original, out are the shrieking blondes and rampaging looters, in are smart, controlled Ana (Sarah Polley as a believable nurse not afraid to wield a fire poker) and Kenneth (Ving Rhames), who is exactly the kind of cop you want walking beside you if you are facing scores of the undead.
The zombies are a bit spryer in this film, and the pregnancy of one of the main characters is not the life-giving promise it was in the first movie. But the ending is what differs most from the original. If you're a fan of the horror genre, then this flick is a welcome, if derivative, fright-fest in the school of Romero's classics.
13) The Cabin in The Woods (2011)
What starts out as another five-band teen getaway to a cabin in the woods ends up becoming a fresh take on the trope, with puppeteers behind what is taking place, in a twisted game of Choose Your Adventure. The ending is fittingly grim, but you won’t be disappointed. Definitely worth one hour and thirty-five minutes of your time.
14) The Babadook (2014)
The feature debut of writer-director Jennifer Kent is not just genuinely, deeply scary, but also a beautifully told tale of a mother and son, enriched with layers of contradiction and ambiguity. It presents grief as a demon, questions reality, and creeps out the viewer by making psychopathology seem like something that could happen to anybody. The style of the film is not teasing exactly - it's too sad and lonely - but there is certainly a hair-pulling mixture of glum laughter and vast apprehension. Is the demon real? Does it matter? That’s for you to judge. Either way, if it’s in a word, or if it’s with a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook.
15) Suspiria (Original and the Remake - 1977 and 2019 respectively)
Suspiria is a baroque piece of esoteric expressionism that you enter - and exit - without understanding so much as feeling. It's always fascinating to watch; the thrills and spills are so classy and fast that the movie becomes in effect what horror movies seemed like when you were too young to get in to see them. Director Dario Agento works so hard for his effects -- throwing around shock cuts, coloured lights, and peculiar camera angles -that it would be impolite not to be a little frightened. This entry stands out as it is a visually beautiful horror movie, a bright fantasy that lives off its aesthetic. If you are a horror fan and haven’t seen this movie yet, then you’re not living right. The remake is also worth a watch, something that is oftentimes unique in the horror genre.
Tumblr media
16) A Quiet Place (2018)
This gripping, clever monster movie is one of those rare genre treats that seizes on a simple, unique idea and executes it so perfectly and concisely that it elicits satisfying squeals of delight. It's directed and co-written by Krasinski, who's best known for his work in comedy but translates his experience in that genre to the expert building and releasing of tension here. A Quiet Place is, in many ways, like an extended classic horror movie sequence, such as famous ones in The Birds or Aliens, wherein the heroes must try not to disturb packs of resting monsters.
At the same time, Krasinski uses his quiet moments like music, ranging from moments of restful beauty -- including a father-son trip to a waterfall, where it's noisy enough that they can talk and even shout -- to moments of pause. A loud noise can cause a jump, but it's immediately followed by tension and dread: Will the creatures come this time? The real beauty is the movie's primal quality, based on the most basic elements of life, such as survival and protection of the species. No explanation is given for the monsters' existence; they, like us, are just here. Images of water, sand, bare feet, crops, and plant life serve to underline the theme of life itself. A few overly familiar horror movie clichés keep it from being perfect, but otherwise A Quiet Place is so good that it will leave viewers speechless.
17) The Exorcist (1973)
Once famously dubbed ‘the most terrifying movie ever made,” this movie is steeped in urban legend, especially concerning the unfortunate happenings that occurred when it was being made.
If you think your teen is ready for this shocking film, keep in mind that some audience members in the '70s reportedly fainted after seeing Dick Smith's grisly makeup effects on Blair. In some extreme cases, viewers even required psychiatric care. Also, the moans, snarls, and profane utterances from Regan (most are actually the dubbed-in voice of a well-known older actress, Mercedes McCambridge) amount to some of the most chilling audio ever done for film.
Thanks in part to Linda Blair's wrenching, Oscar-nominated performance, The Exorcist was a huge hit, earning back 10 times its $10 million budget (a then-lavish sum, outrageous for a "mere" horror flick). Movie historians cite it (along with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) as the conclusive end of old-school spook shows featuring Dracula and Frankenstein and bobbing rubber bats. If you haven’t watched it yet, you may have your horror movie fan card revoked.
18) The Final Destination Franchise (2000 - 2011)
If I had to list all of the movies in the Final Destination franchise in order of quality, I would say 5, 1, 2, 3, and 4. Fourth instalment withstanding, the series is a formidable addition to the horror genre, as the invisible killer, Death Itself, stalks its victims and kills them off in creatively gruesome ways after they initially cheat death. The fifth addition contains an awesome twist at the end which in hindsight you should have seen coming throughout the entire movie. Pay close attention. The only downside is (SPOILER ALERT) that none of the characters throughout the series really survive.
19) Let the Right One In (Lat den Ratte Komma In) (2008)
Please watch the Swedish version, and power through the subtitles. This is a horror movie that is tragic on multiple levels, as it deals with a lonely and bullied boy who so happens to live next door to a pubescent vampire. When her benefactor dies, we see how the main character’s life will also unfold, and what lies in his future. A must-see film that is more than just your average horror movie.
20) Terrifier (2017)
This movie definitely gets back to basics by paying homage to the original slasher classics. Art the Clown, who we are originally introduced to in the 2013 movie All Hallow’s Eve (also worth a watch), is a vicious horror movie villain who kills just for kicks. He also subverts the horror movie trope by using a weapon which was previously considered off-limits to horror movie villains, especially those with supernatural abilites (mostly, anyway). This movie also contains one of the bloodiest deaths in recent horror movie history. I like the use of practical effects over the often-overdone CGI. What is Art the Clown? Deranged killer? Demonic entity? Who cares? Its all good fun. Watch it now on Netflix.
Tumblr media
I’ll probably be back again some time in the future with a further 20 horror movies that are worth a watch, because there are so many of them. To everyone, take care during these uncertain times.

Wishful Thinking: The Nintendo Cinematic Universe Part 2 Electric Boogaloo
Tumblr media
The Nintendo Cinematic Universe. This an idea/joke/meme that has been thrown around ever since Nintendo in 2016 announced their plan to make movies based off their IP’s again. They have recently joined forces with Illumination Entertainment to create the upcoming Mario movie. Since then I've been thinking about how Nintendo could truly capitalize on this idea. With video game adaptations slightly getting better and better each year (with stuff like Castlevania, Detective Pikachu, Sonic Boom TV Show, etc.), I think this idea while somewhat far fetched could still be somewhat possible. Let’s continue talk about my crazy idea for a Nintendo Cinematic Universe.
The Second Phase:
Let’s look back at the diagram again:
Tumblr media
With phase 1 the general the general theme I laid out was “Recognizable”. Essentially kick starting the NCU. In our hypothetical reality, the first phase of the NCU is a success. Nintendo/Universal succeeded in capturing a consistent audience willing to go see these films. So what to do for phase 2? Well the theme for phase 2 is “First verse, slightly the same as the first”. Let’s get into it:
Tumblr media
The Legend of Zelda 2
Zelda is pretty interesting in terms of continuing it’s storylines. Most Zelda games take place with a different Link, a different Zelda, and a different Hyrule between installments. This isn’t entirely true. For example, the Link from the orignal Legend of Zelda is the same Link that appears in Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. The Zelda movie sequel will echo this format. Being a direct sequel to the first movie. The basis of the plot would be similar to that of Zelda 2. While Ganon has been defeated. His minions seek the Triforce in order to revive him once more. With this goal in mind, Link, Zelda, and other allies journey off to stop Ganon’s minions from reviving the dark lord. I imagine this film to be more action packed and dark than the first, while not completely throwing out the themes and relationships established in the prior film.
Tumblr media
Super Mario Bros. 3
The third and final film in the Mario movie trilogy. That’s all I really have to say on this.
Tumblr media
Kirby
Okay I know what your thinking. How the hell would a Kirby movie work? Kirby isn’t the most linguistic character in Nintendo’s roster of heroes. Between the “hai’s”, poyos, and the occasional engrish (see Sm4sh and Smash Ultimate voice clips). But I think what Kirby lacks in words, makes up for in terms of set pieces and visuals. Planet Popstar is a beautiful place and that’s thanks to the strong art design of the Kirby series. But another reason why I think a Kirby movie could work is the “deep lore” of the franchise. In more recent games, the franchise has been experimenting with more story elements. From a heart broken monarch wasp waging war against those who live under her to a mechanical empire ruled by a emotionally destroyed business man. Yeah, those are antagonists from a Kirby game. Not to mention the final battles of Kirby games are visually insane and intense, making for good cinematic material. Is a Kirby movie a bad idea? You be the judge.
Tumblr media
Kid Icarus
This just makes too much sense. Kid Icarus out of most Nintendo franchises I feel would work perfectly on the big screen. The wild and crazy universe that Kid Icarus Uprising explored would be great cinematic material. Not to mention the dialogue and gameplay of Uprising would easily put this movie in the action/adventure genre. Think of something like Pirates of the Caribbean. It would also be a treat if the movie was animated in the style of some of these shorts.
Tumblr media
Fire Emblem
Let me preface this by saying I know jack all about the Fire Emblem series. Ok that’s not entirely true. I know the general gameplay structure of the series, it’s a tactical JRPG. But besides that I am completely in the dark on the franchise. But what I have seen from trailers of more recent installments, I can say a Fire Emblem movie would be almost Lord of the Rings in nature. And that’s coming from someone who hasn’t watched or read a whole lot of LOTR. I really don’t have much more to say other that a Fire Emblem film would target a more teenager to adult demographic similar to Metroid. Speaking of...
Tumblr media
Metroid 2
Samus returns in the sequel to the first adventure. Again with most sequels, this film will severely raise the stakes. This film would take elements from Metroid Fusion and Prime 3 where a new evil force threatens galactic civilization. Samus would be pushed to limits as a bounty hunter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus: Wario spin-off
Who said the NCU can’t have spin-off movies. How I imagine a Wario movie to work is something along the lines of Lupin the 3rd. Wario and Waluigi along with other Warioware characters attempt to carry out a daring heist. Along the way the gang come across various death traps, plot twists, law enforcement, and even Captain Syrup. The treasure hunting/making money aspect of the Wario games would fit perfectly into the heist movie genre.
Conclusion:
So to recap, the primary goal of the second phase of the NCU is to continue with the momentum of the previous phase. Continuing or concluding the storylines of previous phase 1 films while also introducing audiences to Nintendo’s beloved but no quite as well known IPs like Kid Icarus or Fire Emblem. So what happens in phase 3? Stay tuned to find out.

tell me that i’m not crazy | shawn mendes
university au, shawn x goth gf
masterlist | series playlist
It's a psychological fact that you have multiple versions of yourself that you present at different times. You are not the same person in everyone's eyes.
Being self-aware and moderately narcissistic, I detected a few of those selves. Girlfriend Me: Still reserved, but letting loose. Affectionate and supportive. Less bitchy than normal. Adored by Shawn Mendes for some reason. Extended Family Me: Quiet and moody. She wants to be anywhere but here. Constantly pestered to bring someone home. Customer Service Me: Professional, but shy. Blunt and efficient. Always smiling even though she wants to die. Finally, Crazy Me: Nervous and insecure. Bursting at the seams. Wanting to talk but fears being ridiculed and rejected.
You could understand why I didn't want to tell Shawn about Luca being my coworker. He didn't ask if I still saw Luca at all, because I had told him I cut the bastard off… on a personal level. Professionally, I saw Luca 3 times a week. We work at the same car dealership. That's how we met.
It was less stressful having to see Luca at work now that I wasn't hung up on him. As long as he called me a bitch and ridiculed me constantly, I was okay. As long as I had Shawn to be kind to me, everything was fine.
It was easy for me to sit behind a desk at the window of a tiny office. I worked with three other people in this office: Stacy, the business manager who never stayed past 2 o'clock. Then there was Jason, the salesman who was always stoned. Finally, there was Luca, the other salesman who got up in everyone's business. He and Jason were very good friends outside of work, and they sat at their respective desks at the back of the office when they weren't out in the showroom entertaining customers. I was stationed at the front, being the receptionist. It was easy keeping my back to everyone else.
Being at a car dealership, I had quite a few boring responsibilities. They were all easy, and done quickly. so the only thing I had to worry about was answering the phone every so often. Most of the time, I was catching up on coursework and pretending not to listen to Jason and Luca banter.
“Imagine having a car in the twentieth century,” Jason sarcastically droned on.
“Couldn't be me,” Luca finished.
Yes, 90% of their conversations went like that. You could say my sense of humor warped a little because of them. I mean, I still find offensive jokes to be far from funny, and that was the other ten percent. I lose my one brain cell just by sitting in this office.
The phone rang just after Jason and Luca started talking about women in a vulgar manner. I quickly got annoyed by the amount of testosterone increasing in the room, so I was glad to have a distraction. I picked up the receiver and said the usual professional greeting in the cheeriest tone I could muster.
“So that's your happy voice, eh?”
Just like that, I unclenched and dropped the fake tone. “Hey, you.”
“No, no,” Shawn said, “go back to the other voice. I'm a loyal, paying customer here!”
I giggled. “Maybe later. What's up?”
“Wanted to see if you're hungry. I can pick you up on your lunch break.”
“Yes, please. I need to get out of here for a bit. I'll be ready in about an hour.”
“Perfect, I'll see you then.”
We hung up, and my cheeks were burning. I didn't realize I was beaming until I turned in my seat.
Luca and Jason had walked up next to me, clearly interested in what I had been doing. Luca had a shit eating grin on his face.
“Who was that?” he asked in the most ten-year-old sounding voice.
“Don't worry about it,” I snapped.
“Someone's got a boyfriend!”
“But bro,” Jason piped up, “she doesn't like anybody.”
I chuckled. “True. But my guy likes me, so…”
“Who is he?” Luca asked, sitting in the chair next to me. “Since when did you get a mans?”
I gave him a pointed look. “Why do you care?”
“You're just not the relationship type, y’know?” Jason answered.
“D’you loooove him?” Luca teased.
I scoffed. “Oh, now you wanna talk about my feelings? You never did before!”
Luca’s grin faltered. His face flushed.
“What does that mean?” Jason asked.
“Nothing. She's kidding.”
Oh yeah. No one ever knew about mine and Luca's office fling. It took me a while to realize it was because he was embarrassed of me. I know, what the hell was I thinking, getting involved with someone like that?

A typical Friday night for me consisted of skincare and watching whatever TV show I was intensely fixated on. Whether or not Shawn joined me, it was my personal recharging time. My life has gotten so mundanely stressful that I looked forward to sitting on my dorm room couch alone.
Tonight was different. Shawn was going to sing at a bar downtown, and I promised him I would go. I managed to string along my roommate, Stella, so I wouldn't be sitting at a table by myself. She was the one who brought me to Shawn's show long before he and I started dating. Stella now takes full responsibility for getting my introverted ass into a relationship.
Shawn had to get to the bar early to set up, so I showed up with Stella on my arm. We grabbed a table near the back window, away from where the band was setting up. As soon as we were sitting down, I texted Shawn to let him know I had arrived.
“So he's gotten you outta the dorm,” Stella commented, “yet you still manage to place yourself in the corner of the room.”
I shrugged. “As long as he knows I'm here.”
Stella hummed and then flagged down a waiter. She ordered a cocktail, and I stuck with water.
“Are you ever gonna let loose again?” she asked me once the waiter had gone.
“As long as I'm on antidepressants, I'm always loose,” I told her. I was very cautious about mixing alcohol with whatever pills I was putting into my body. I hadn't had a drink in months.
“Does your mans know you take antidepressants?”
“He will.” Maybe. Probably… not.
Shawn performed a few minutes later. He was insanely good at working the crowd. Then again, there were some enthusiastic fangirls standing directly in front of the stage that got everyone else into it. Can't say I blame ‘em.
I was what you call a “metal head” and also a “nerd.” I was also a “supportive goth gf,” meaning I always listened to Shawn's music when he wasn't around. I told him I lived for the slow, sad songs, especially Mercy. Secretly, I fully bopped to all of his fun, upbeat songs. Even more secretly, it brought me immense joy to see Shawn sing his heart out on stage. I was his biggest fan, though I would never tell him that. It would just go straight to his ego.
The song I loved hearing the most was Mercy. It was the first of Shawn's songs I had ever heard. It resonated with me deeply a few months ago, just after I had left Luca. I got very choked up hearing Shawn sing it in that little coffee shop. Later, when Stella introduced me, he said he had seen my face in the crowd. He knew it hit home.
We are very happy now, I swear.
I can say with confidence that the past is behind me. Now, Mercy is my favorite song because of Shawn, not the guy that came before him. I never realized how unhappy I was until I wasn't anymore. Therapy, medication, and new people made their contributions.
~
“You look so happy when you're up there,” I told Shawn once we were back at his place.
He had been beaming since we left the bar. A couple of drinks may have had something to do with that. “I am happy. I get so giddy every time I get to sing. I wish I could do it all the time.”
We sat on the couch, basking in the silence. Shawn slung his arm around me, euphoria still radiating off his whole body. I looked up at him, and I couldn't help but hug him around his middle. I felt a bit mushy.
“Proud'a you,” I told him.
Once I was in that position, Shawn took full advantage and lied us back across the couch. I was somewhat awkwardly on top of him, so I shifted my legs so I was practically straddling him. Then, I lied my head on his chest.
“Did you have fun? I saw you all the way in the back,” Shawn said.
“Yeah, I had fun. I love that you kept Mercy in the set.”
“I know it’s your favorite.”
There were things I wanted to know about that particular song when I first heard it. Of course, I didn’t want to seem nosy or interested when I first met Shawn. But now we were out in the open, and it was getting easier to do things like talk normally.
“Who hurt you so bad you had to write a song?” I asked as I sat up, still on top of him.
Shawn was smiling up at me, very aware of the position we were in. However, he still answered my question. “Actually… Mercy was about a friend of mine. He went through that.”
That was brand new information. No, seriously. I actually had to get off of Shawn’s lap to process this. “You write other people’s stories?”
He sat up and made space for me to sit next to him again. “Sometimes. This one in particular was about my friend having a complicated relationship with a girl he works with.”
I chuckled. “I know that feeling all too well.” Then, as a joke, “That guy wouldn’t happen to work at a car dealership, would he?”
“He does, actually.”
My entire body shifted away from Shawn. Okay, this was getting weird. I work at a car dealership. I had a complicated relationship with a coworker. Not to mention, Shawn was quite popular and knew people all over the area, and he was a regular at my dealership. My favorite song was slipping through my fingers.
Shawn didn’t seem too concerned. “It’s probably a coincidence, babe.”
“What’s his name, then?” I had told him quite a bit about my past relationship, apart from the guy’s name. I had so many questions.
“Luca…”
I stared at my boyfriend in utter shock, while he had a look of disbelief on his face.
“No. No way. I wrote Mercy over a year ago. Plus, he was high when he was telling me about-”
“He’s always high!” I snapped. “The only time he isn’t is when his pen runs out of whatever-the-fuck!”
I couldn’t believe it. My current boyfriend knows my ex… flame. My ex flame talked about me to my current boyfriend, before he was my boyfriend. The song that came out of it was my favorite song. If that wasn’t the most fucked up fanfic scenario ever-
Oh god. What if they had seen each other when Shawn picked me up from the dealership? What would have happened? What kind of shit would Luca had given me? What would Shawn have said to him?
“When exactly did this happen?” I asked, mildly frantic. “How long have you known him? How long have you known about me?”
“I didn’t know it was you,” Shawn said. “He always called you ‘the girl from work,’ and some other things that upset me now that you’re my girlfriend. I met Luca in one of my classes last year. Sometimes we smoked together, but I never considered him an actual friend.” He put his hand on my shoulder. “If I had known you then, and if I knew what was really going on, I wouldn’t have…”
Here I thought Luca was far too embarrassed of me to even act like I exist. I had been under the impression that he never thought of me when we weren’t in the backseat of my car. I thought all of his friends were just as bad as he was… but he knows Shawn well enough to confide in him? Or rather, Luca told Shawn I gave him such a hard time that he had to beg for mercy?
“I know you spent a lot of time being pissed at him,” Shawn told me after a while, “but he really did have feelings for you.”
I let the words sink in for a minute. “That… That is the fattest fucking load of bullshit I’ve ever heard.”
“Well, I never thought of Luca as that type of guy. He’s pretty reserved, but-”
“Still a grade A asshole. He was way different when it was me and him. Sometimes he was nice to me. Most times, he acted like I didn’t exist, and if he did, he called me a bitch or a whore or he made some rude comment about anything I was doing. He thought I was insane for trying to call him my boyfriend, but he would beg to get into my pants every few weeks. I was too emotional, too cringey, too goth, not sexy enough. I was never enough for him, so don’t tell me he ever had feelings because that’s not what I saw.”
Shawn had a sad look in his eyes. He nodded lightly.
“And worst of all, he ruined my favorite song by my favorite person.”
“I’ll write you a new one. A better one. You’ll never have to hear Mercy again.”

So... I never want to forget what BTS Chicago Night One was like... the pictures and video will help that I got.. but I wanted more. Something concrete...so I wrote this:
I have sincere doubts that I’ll ever be able to accurately describe what going to BTS’s Speak Yourself show in Chicago on May 11, 2019 meant to me. Part of being able to convey why it was such a life-altering experience for me would include y’all having an understanding as to why I love these guys so much, what their music, and general existence means to me. And that, is a task that is beyond my capabilities…but I’ll try.
I didn’t know what I was missing. I shrugged my daughter off when she’d try to tell me about them or get me to listen to their music. I didn’t understand why anyone would listen to music outside of their native language. How do you even enjoy it? But then…in July…I heard Fake Love on the radio while on my way to a Hanson String Theory show. Something about it called to me. I jumped in and started reading lyrics (as the message is always my number one concern—after having a good groove/sound) …and I fell in love. –Do you know how hard it is to find a great beat and fat bass WITHOUT sexually degrading lyrics? Damn near impossible until BTS for me. Instead of ‘bitches, hos, money, drugs, and pimping’ they’re singing about chasing dreams, rejecting status quo, finding home with those you love and who love you, about love, relationships, and connection. They sing a wide range—pop, pop/rock, rap, hip-hop…it keeps my many moods quite satisfied.  Their music fully transcends language. You can just FEEL it, so deeply, so wholly, you don’t need to know every last word to get the message.
Then, I fell in love with THEM. I fell in love with their message of loving ourselves, speaking our truths, of not trying to meet anyone else’s expectations, to do what makes YOU happy. They are so engaged, humble, gracious, and kind. They’re funny and dorky. They’re reflective and intellectual. They’re driven and talented.
Yes, they’re a “boy band.” Yes, they dance and wear ‘costumes.’ But these boys also write and produce their own stuff (with others as well…but still—active participants!) and always sing live. They give 110% for a minimum of two hours-even to the point of getting sick/passing out/injuring themselves.
And the fan base!! Holy mother! Sure I feel a little isolated here in small town MN in my love for these boys (aside from my kid, my cousin’s kid, and a few friends of theirs) but the fan base is MASSIVE. And incredibly welcoming (for the most part). There’s drama of course—I mean, there are at least 20 million of us. But it’s pretty easy to stay out of and find people to connect with. It’s one thing to know there’s a network of us online… it’s a completely different thing to experience it.
Which, I guess, brings me to this past weekend. After a roughly 8 hour drive, we arrived in Chicago. Right away, the streets were sprinkled with ARMIES—BTS and BT21 gear proudly worn and displayed. A sense of belonging and home seeped in. And that’s not a new sensation for me, as I’ve felt that every time I went to Tulsa, or Back To The Island or any other Hanson event/show. It’s a beautiful feeling. We got checked in and decided to head to Soldier Field as the merch lines were already open and apparently essentially non-existent. The field area had a small number of ARMY milling about, nothing too crazy. We stopped and took a picture of a few BTS banners, then found the merch area. And yeah, after less than a half hour later we were at the front of the line, mostly certain of our merch choices. I pretty much wanted it all, but had to limit myself. We wandered a bit more, and that’s when it finally started to sink in…I was in the same city as seven men who had altered my emotional well being over the last 10-11 months, I would be seeing them LIVE in around 12 hours. I was quickly overwhelmed and started to cry. It feels somewhat embarrassing to say, and I don’t even fully understand what it was that overwhelmed me so much. The rest of the evening was pretty chill—grabbed some dinner and mentally tried to prepare ourselves for the next day.
The next day we went back down to Soldier field—equipped with layers and an umbrella because the weather was turning cold and rainy. When we arrived we knew we made the right call by going to get merch the afternoon before because the merch line was RIDICULOUS – we’re talking thousands of people in line. There were multiple merch locations—all with the same size lines! But we wanted to get pictures done at the BTS Studio – a very neat little booth where you get to “interact” with one of the guys via a sort of hologram like thing, but the pictures turn out so freaking legit I was dying to get one. ….however….BigHit/Mattel (I don’t know who made this call..but!) cut off the general line after we waited for two hours. There were at least a couple hundred more behind us waiting, as well as about a hundred in front of us, and there were five hours left before doors opened to the stadium so it literally made ZERO sense to cut the line. BTS SOLD OUT Soldier Field (roughly 70,000 seats) and they only allowed 250 general people into the studio (there were more QR holders—which tons of ARMY tried for an only a few got) … it was a disaster. I suppose I would have been less angry had it not been so ungodly COLD out. We certainly did not plan for 40 degree weather in MAY.
We decided to hop an Uber and go back to the hotel until showtime. After lunch we drove downtown to check out the BTS Pop-up Store situation, and then made a quick decision to avoid that line as it literally wrapped around an entire downtown Chicago city block – INSANE—but beautiful. So, back to the hotel. The weather was not clearing up, and I was starting to worry about the show—both for our comfort but also and more importantly the guys’ safety. Wet stages are slippery and these boys don’t hold back, the risk of injury was high. So, we joked and tweeted a bit about how Yoongi (Suga) needed to say out loud that he wanted the rain to stop and skies to clear because anything Yoongi says out loud tends to happen – saying he wanted BTS to win daesangs (Korean absolute top awards – they now have 15 from 2016 to 2018) saying he wanted to go to the Grammys (and they presented at this year’s Grammy Awards) saying he wanted Billboard top 200 (done) Billboard top 100 (done) A Billboard Music Award (done x4 – three top social artist and this years top group award). So we called on Yoongi to say he didn’t want the rain… and while the boys may have said it was the power of ARMY that cleared the skies I still say it was Yoongi.
When we got into the venue another rush of realization hit me when I saw how CLOSE to the stage we were. I may have missed out on the VIP tickets (thanks to the stupid ticketmaster app freezing on my phone) but level 100 was INCREDIBLE. Absolutely astounding really. We got our ARMY Bombs paired to our seats and then waited. They play music videos while we wait, and it was amusing to have fans scream for those as well – and indicative of how insane it was going to be once all the fans were in and seated because it was loud even with just around a few thousand inside. My brain still couldn’t quite comprehend that I was about to see BTS live, that I was as close as I was, and that it wasn’t a dream.
The thing about it is…once it started, I had no idea what to do. Do I watch the stage, do I watch the screen, do I not try to capture any video or pictures and just dance, sing, and scream? I tried to do all of those options, but I still feel like I missed so much. I feel like it all went so quickly.
They opened with DIONYSUS – from their new album Map of the Soul: Persona. A heavy hitting, party-anthem type song. A great opener to get the crowd hyped up (as if we needed the help) The pyrotechnics warmed it up a bit when they went off (holy shit we really were close!) The stage was amazing! Large silver leopards behind them, Greek pillars adorning the sides…totally fitting of Dionysus.
They transitioned straight into NOT TODAY—another heavy hitter for bass, power, and intense choreo. Theses guys BURST into their stage presence, taking no prisoners and leaving us all breathless and trembling. The sensation of hearing tens of thousands of other fans screaming with you, singing with you, and doing fan chants for the guys…well, that’s a feeling I’ve never felt before.
My first round of tears started when they did their introductions/welcome speeches. Let’s be honest, I’m Jimin biased through and through. He will always hold the biggest part of my heart out of the seven. And, honestly, I thought he was the most beautiful being I’d ever seen…but to see him in person…holy mother, there is no comparing it. He’s absolutely ethereal. An angel just walking among us. But each of their moments touched me, made me smile or laugh or just bask in the feel of love they send to us. And then…WINGS. I was so excited to know that they were performing Wings as it’s one of my favorite songs and I worried I’d never hear it live since it’s an older one. My teary-eyed state did not go away once they started it, even though it’s an upbeat song. There’s just something about BTS singing about facing fears and chasing dreams, having their wings spread and taking them to where they want to go…feeling that it was the work of ARMY helping them get there…but I know for a fact that ARMY also feel that BTS are our wings too—the way we feel encouraged and empowered to live authentically and without apology, to chase dreams and find our passions.
A small break and then we got J-Hope’s solo JUST DANCE Hobi is a great entertainer, clearly loves the stage and his passion for dance is legitimately felt through the entire stadium. After J-Hope we got an iconic performance of EUPHORIA by Jungkook. Kookie is stunning! Absolutely beautiful. He goes from adorable baby bunny to professional rockstar in half a second. His vocals are solid and his choreo locked down. But who thought up the crazy idea of hanging onto a giant hook-like-thing and just soaring over the crowd on a cable!? My mama bear heart struggled with that, fam. But he did great and seems to really enjoy it so we’ll let it pass.
BEST OF ME!! Ugh, another song I was DESPERATE to hear live and worried I never would. A stellar performance! The energy was still high with them and us, everyone singing along and dancing. So many of their songs are “one of my favorites” but this one definitely is. And I was GIDDY hearing it live. And yes, the answer call between Jimin and Jungkook was a highlight.
Clear the stage, play a quick video… and then… SERENDIPITY. This experience STILL feels like it didn’t happen. Jimin singing live… wow… just… I lack words to express Jimin and his performance. His choreography is always some of the most intricate and demanding and yet he does it flawlessly while maintaining his angelic vocals. He didn’t get the title main dancer by chance. The level of professionalism is incredible. You can tell he feels so loved by ARMY, his smile is so genuine and gracious as he’s absorbing all our cheering and screaming…and yeah, maybe a little bit of sobbing. He’s a soft, sweet person and an absolute powerhouse on stage—even with a ballad such as Serendipity.
And then RM brings us back up in energy with his solo LOVE. They’re all great performers, and RM is no exception. It’s hard to capture a good picture of him because he’s constantly moving on the stage, making rounds to every corner. Another beautiful moment to be chanting “salam salam salam (person person person) and salang salang salang (love love love)” with tens of thousands of fans… it’s quite overwhelming.
BOY WITH LUV is like a blur for me. They all looked AMAZING. I loved the mix of pink and blue clothing. I probably missed a ton of moments through that song because my brain short circuited, I tried to get some pictures but the movement is so constant that not many of them turned out. Strong vocals, a ton of fun together, an all around great performance.
From the newest to some old school – DOPE followed Boy With Luv. I love the energy and power in Dope. I also loved the cute little moment I got on video between Jimin and Jungkook. Dope blended into BAEPSAE and FIRE … this medley is INSANE. I LOVE watching the guys freestyle their dancing and then effortlessly joining formation and nailing the song’s choreography. It’s stupidly impressive. JHope jumped out and attacked us all with some power dancing and then the dreaded/desired hip thrusting.
I got absolutely zero pictures or video from IDOL because I was so enraptured by them on stage. I couldn’t take my eyes off them. It was pretty neat as Idol faded out, they went back to the top of the stage then went full in to the Idol choreography again. Like a second dance break when it appeared the song was over. Another small break and then Tae (V) comes out in pajamas on a freaking bed. The crowd lost their minds. It was a stunning performance of SINGULARITY, and I’m really hoping I can find video of the small dance break he has in it where he flung off the jacket. Sometimes Tae fades a little into the background but this performance wasn’t one of those times.
After Singularity we got a seamless transition into FAKE LOVE—another song I have zero pics or video from because the whole thing was an experience. Seriously. Damn. From the strong, solid vocals to the hard hitting, precise choreo, to the passionate fan chants…Fake Love was perfection. …And do I really need to mention Jungkook’s abs? Oofta. I was utterly enraptured by this performance. Also, since Fake Love was the comeback I came into the fandom during, it holds a unique place in my heart.
I don’t remember Fake Love ending, but I do remember the next song starting. SEESAW. Shit. Again, I shall remind you that Jimin is by bias—always has been always will be. But I’d be a bold-faced LIAR if I tried to say that Yoongi isn’t the most amazing performer I’ve ever seen. They are all phenomenal. But Yoongi has something extra. Something you don’t expect from him. He often flies a little under the radar, not often the highlight of red-carpet appearances or interviews, fairly soft-spoken. But when he hits the stage—watch out! Min Yoongi was BORN to be on stage. Even with a softer song, and less intense choreography Suga owns it. He commands all attention. He’s claimed in the past that he can’t “sing”, since he’s a rapper, but Seesaw (and First Love—his solo from Wings) prove otherwise. Gorgeous. I was speechless, and a bit teary watching him.
And if I wasn’t already an emotional mess by then, Jin gets the stage to perform EPIPHANY. Oh my heart!! This was a song that when I first heard it, my heart and soul KNEW it was intense and it touched me instantly. And then, when I listened again with subs/lyrics I had a little bit of an emotional breakdown. Epiphany live was like the first time all over again. And to be surrounded by tens of thousands of other fans singing “I’m the one I should love…” Well, cue me crying.  A message of needing to love yourself before being able to find love with anyone else…well that’s a message we all need to take to heart. A stellar performance. An emotional experience.
But then! Then you know what they did!? When we’re already emotional hot messes? They go into THE TRUTH UNTOLD. Whhyyyy!? Why would you do that to us!? The Truth Untold is a transcendent song, no way around it. A song about feelings of inadequacy, of being rejected if people knew who we really were, hiding behind masks because we’re so afraid… God, just rip out my heart. And our dear vocal line (Jimin, Jungkook, Jin, and Tae) were so lovely and beautiful and somber. The song has no choreo, no fancy stages… just four guys singing their absolute hearts out.
Cue the rap line (Suga, RM, and JHope) coming to pull us from our emotional state with OUTRO: TEAR. Oh lord, as it started there was a woman the row behind us who asked her friend, “what song is this?” and her friend was so offended! She screamed, “Tear, bitch!” It was slightly hilarious. All three rappers dominate the stage, and having never been to a live rap show before, I gotta say the ability to maintain the flow at the speed they do is impressive. TEAR flowed into MIC DROP and ooooooh how I lost my mind! MIC DROP was the song that really got me to jump into the BTS scene head first. It’s always been a favorite, will always be a favorite. I tried to get video, but I couldn’t stop dancing so it’s pretty bad video. (also, no one wants to hear my horrible voice fan chanting and singing along) The choreography to MIC DROP kills me. The choreo (and the song itself) just screams “we’re badass and we have no apologies” so get on board or get the hell out.
A small pause so that they could set up the guys’ giant Anpanman bounce house! ANPANMAN has always been a fun song and a great live performance, but it hit a new level when you get to watch the guys play on a giant bounce house. It’s easy to forget how young they all are and how much of their youth they kind of missed out on as they chased this dream. I mean, Jungkookie is only 21 now, was 15 when they debuted. Jin, the oldest is only 26 and was 20 at debut. They lost a lot of freedom and playful years as they trained for debut. It’s freaking adorable to watch them play on stage. Even cuter when Yoongi goes from savage rapper in MIC DROP to soft and playful on the inflatable. Jungkook chased Jimin to the top, did a little dance and then they slid down (JK after Jimin though I think he had wanted to go down together)
Anpanman transitions into SO WHAT which is truly a sight to see. No set choreo, just the guys dancing along every last inch of the stage to spread their love to everyone in the stadium. Playful moments, a lot of laughter. It’s BTS being authentically them. And I love it.
We all got a bit emotional during the closing speeches. Jin being classic Jin and screaming AARRRMMMYYYY at us, “today is so cold, you know…thank you for coming out today even though it’s cold and rainy, I’d like to hug you with my warm heart” (and he hugs JK) “I actually really hate being cold, I was so happy though because I was with you, Army. I LOVE YOU ARMY!!” Jimin showing us how floored he was by our presence, soaking in our cheers—eyes wide and smile bright. “I’m so so happy today. But! I hope you guys don’t catch a cold.” He then essentially points a finger at us, daring our immune systems to go against his wishes.  (the screams overtake the next part of his speech so I’m not positive as to what he said) Jimin always finishes with “I love you” and lots of hearts. Jungkook and his adorable bunny smile, acted shy when it was his turn. He starts with “…It’s been awhile. I know it’s was rainy and cold, rainy and chilly…but you warmed my heart. I hope you also felt warm energy from us. One more thing, please, don’t catch a cold. Alright? See you all again!”  Suga – commanding the stage once again. “Chicago make some noise! I heard it’s actually really cold in Chicago but I didn’t know it was going to be this cold. But because of you Army, you guys melted this place. Chicago make some noise! Today’s going to be such an unforgettable day. Thank you so much for coming out today, see you tomorrow!”  JHope: “My lovely Chicago!! Did we have fun today? Since it was raining hard, and cold, I was worried for you all. However, as I was watching all of you, having fun, with your smiles on your face, my worries disappeared and I gained my power back. Army, you guys are my hope, you’re my hope, thank you so much Army Chicago, see you tomorrow.”   Tae: “How you feeling Chicago? Make some noise. A few days ago I had a dream about chasing some stars and this scenery was exactly my dream. I really wanted to chase and make sure to grab a star. I want to keep this scenery forever (Tae fooled me and I thought his speech was over so my video stopped)…ssshhhh…we will come again next year!”  RM: (gets bundled up by Tae, fans chant KIM NAMJOON) “My parents are gonna love this.” (in response to the chanting) “Guys, welcome to the first BTS winter concert. You might catch a cold, it’s freezing but whatever, it’s special right!? It’s fresh. It’s Chicago. Is the weather a serious problem for us? So right before we get onto the stage, like during the sound check, um while we were coming to the stage it was raining a lot and like these friends and every staff were so worried that it was raining and maybe we might do the little dance not very good, so we were worried, but I told them ‘don’t worry Chicago army is going to stop the rain.’ And you guys did! Seriously you guys gave us a miracle and I love this special weather in Chicago. So when the snow comes in Korea I’ll definitely think of Chicago. …”
And then they came right for my heart and soul performing MAKE IT RIGHT and MIKROKOSMOS. Two of my absolute favorite songs off the new album. Sweet, personal, emotional. And the realization that this euphoric experience was coming to an end and I started to lose my composure during MIKROKOSMOS. “Shine, dream, smile” …always for you boys, always for you.
It was around this time that Jimin stood at the corner of the stage facing my section and started to blow kisses. And I teared up because somehow, in a crowd of thousands of people the way Jimin sends his love into the crowd every last one of us feels like the ONLY one of us at that moment in time. You just FEEL the pure love emanating from him...and it’s a feeling unlike any other. A feeling I’ll never forget.
I still don’t think, almost 4000 words later, that I’ve even scrapped the surface of how incredible that night was for me. How touched I was not just by the band, but by being surrounded by thousands upon thousands of people of all ages, races, nationalities, sexual orientations, classes, genders who love them just as much as I do. BTS is so much more than seven beautiful men who dance well. BTS is connection and love. BTS is inspiration and encouragement. BTS isn’t a phase, they’re making an impact far beyond what anyone imagined. Music with a message? It’s been far too long since we’ve had that. BTS is like a long drink of fresh water after being stranded in a desert.
BTS – Seven lights in an otherwise dreary and sad world, reminding us to find our own lights and share it with the world.

Ava Bekker
Hey you! Are you bored? Great me too, I’ve given this more time than I should, but I’ll say this. Bravo Med. They are not known for doing long plots, they are known for doing a thing and then promptly forgetting the thing. But not with this story. Med has never had a true antagonistic character. Until Ava Bekker.
In the Med fandom she has almost always been maligned, hated, shit-on, and fans are constantly asking for her to be taken off the show. I have no idea if this has shaped the current story for her, but it makes it a bit more interesting. Even more interesting has been the ushering of new blogs on this sight and others who use her face and likeness to celebrate her. But I always wonder what they are celebrating. I’ll give you a clue; It rhymes with her last name.
At some point when the show announced that Norma was being added to the cast, they also mentioned that she would have sexual tension/be a love interest, you know cause, Med can’t hold water. Please remember that statement going forward.
That was it for some of you, so excited to see what would happen with your favorite male protagonist and the new pretty white woman, you were so excited that you stopped paying attention, like almost immediately, to her behavior. Rose colored glasses.
To be fair Med has worked harder than it ever has in order to pull the wool over our eyes. But let me help you see some things.
The very first time we meet Ava it’s pretty clear by her composure and the ever-present smug look on her face that she has an ego. She talks down to anyone who isn’t a surgeon (Ethan) and immediately bumps heads with Connor, who in my opinion over reacted to her comment about Latham. She is set up as a rival and that’s what it seems she is until AFTER she operates on Robin. Ava claims that people in the hospital have been gossiping and she found out all the dirt on Connor that way. I could buy maybe finding out about Robin that way, but Dr. Latham would not entertain gossip in his OR.
What I think actually happened?
Ava took a tour around the hospital noticed an entire wing bearing the name Rhodes and now wanted to know more about the rising star at Med. So, she approaches him in THE most inappropriate and sexual harassing way. She casually brings up his mother’s suicide like she’s talking about buying bread, disrespects his relationship to Dr. Downey and his memory, and then insults the woman she just assisted in operating on, Connor’s girlfriend. Connor lets it’s roll off his back cause if you hadn’t noticed that’s how Connor is, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t upset or offended. She sums it all up by saying all this tragedy is because of him (blaming the victim) and then she does something so off, she says she’s into dangerous men. At this point SHE is the instigator and has made eyes at him (basically since they met).
Connor’s face is NOT intrigued. It’s the same looks he’s been giving her as of late. A feeling of wondering who she is, not because he’s intimidated but because he’s offended, alarmed, and reminding himself to stay cautious. If this feels like a stretch pretend the roles were reversed and Ava was a man and Connor was a woman. Does that scene still seem like a hot couple on the rise? Or a creep who has already crossed a social boundary in the first 5 hours of meeting someone.
From here on out Ava is painted in a confusing manner. She seems to try her best to undermine Connor in their “rivalry” over getting surgeries. She NEVER truly wins. She’s also failing to deal with HER sexual attraction to HIM. Connor NEVER flirts with her, in fact he explicitly states that he wants nothing to do with her and would not like to spend his free time with her. This is after she asks him to get a drink, a request she badgers him with even after he makes it clear he isn’t interested. Once again, reverse the roles, a man who does nothing but question your intelligence all day, makes snide comments about your significant other’s mental health, or your ability to take care of them; then propositions you for a drink. You’d think he was a sleazebag.
But it’s not all negative, Ava realizes she can’t get honey with vinegar, so she makes all the attempts to be nice, but why be nice to the person who’s been an asshole to you? Which is why Connor isn’t, plus it’s obvious she wants to get into his pants and he’s not going to encourage anything, even friendship. Remember ladies, this is probably what you too would do in a sexual harassment scenario.
Then Robin leaves. Connor goes on a sexual bender NONE that include Ava. She is somewhat passive aggressive in her nature with him at this point. This is the part of the story that snowed EVERYONE. She seemed “okay” with it until they made out in the breakroom, went home and had vanilla sex. Whatever, you know it was missionary don’t @ me. But by the next morning she feels like it’s a mistake. This is when I began to side-eye her, never believing we’d be where we are now, but it was wild.
Think about it, this doctor who has been wildly inappropriate (even in front of a patient) FINALLY sleeps with the man she’s been after since day one and now she’s calling time. You could say that sleeping with him was the realization that she had crossed a line that was only meant to be flirty, but I don’t think so.
The line she crossed was one of her mental health. See I have a theory. This is NOT Ava’s first time dealing with obsessive thoughts and behavior revolving around a person. I think she knew she was falling into a dangerous territory.
The only reason I theorize this is because of the hints they give about Ava’s empathy around patients being bed-ridden and unable to live their lives. One could empathize if they had been stuck in a room unable to leave…like in a padded cell.
Also, one line she told a patient: “I believe that whenever you do something out of love, it can’t never really be wrong.”
We aren’t going to discuss the “Steal a win” or even “The means justify the end” because we’ve all seen it. I rather focus on what everyone forgot.
Fast forward to the last half of season 3. Ava is playing nicely with Connor, he is falling in love with her, saying things like “We make a good team” and “Good job in there” but that pesky attending spot is still a point of contention. After his epic failure saving a mother and baby it looks like Ava is going to clench the spot. But he comes in and saves the surgery. Securing a spot at Med AND Mayo. This should make Ava happy, but we’re led to believe she’s hurt doubly because he’s bested her (again) and she’s losing the man she loves. But more than anything I think this episode shows she’s beginning to lose it.
Now let’s get into the premiere. It’s obvious that he wants to stay, and she wants him to stay. He is still putting himself out there and she is still playing aloof. Until he REALLY looks like he’s leaving, a party is thrown, and he has said his goodbyes. But Ava has a trick up her sleeve.  We all know what it is. It’s the first time she does something to control his actions. THIS IS NOT LOVE. THIS IS ABUSE.
The only way Ava has not slept with Connor’s dad (for money) cut herself (to play on his need to save the day) and snitch on him to the board (so she could save him) is if the show is REALLY using the whole “she doesn’t know how to express her feelings” story line but it doesn’t make much sense, maybe in season 3, but now? It isn’t plausible. Ava fits into an OLD diagnosis.
“Obsessive love disorder” (OLD) refers to a condition where you become obsessed with one person you think you may be in love with. You might feel the need to protect your loved one obsessively, or even become controlling of them as if they were a possession.
What are the symptoms of obsessive love disorder?
Symptoms of OLD may include:
·        an overwhelming attraction to one person
·        obsessive thoughts about the person
·        feeling the need to “protect” the person you’re in love with
·        possessive thoughts and actions
·        extreme jealousy over other interpersonal interactions
·        low self-esteem
I could write a dissertation on how Ava fits all of these. She was immediately attracted to Connor and intensely.
Connor is the only person she interacts with and the only person she discusses almost all the time. We never hear about her life or if she even has one. No holidays with family. Nothing.
The last episode illustrates that as well as her stepping up to the plate to take the blame too.
The last two are going to be seen when Robin shows up. It’s already in the synopsis about her being jealous, and jealously is often accompanied by possessiveness.
Most of these actions accumulate to low self-esteem…
Oh, and lookout for these in the future:
People who have OLD may also not take rejection easily. In some cases, the symptoms could worsen at the end of a relationship or if the other person rejects you. There are other signs of this disorder, such as:
·        repeated texts, emails, and phone calls to the person they’re interested in
·        a constant need for reassurance
·        difficulty having friendships or maintaining contact with family members because of the obsession over one person
·        monitoring the actions of the other person
·        controlling where the other person goes and the activities they engage in
However, as much as I believe they are going down this route I don’t completely agree with it. Why is that all the women on the show “go crazy”? Especially around Connor.
His mother jumped off a building (she was married to Cornelius so there’s that).
Robin was literally institutionalized and had a complete breakdown in front of her colleagues at the hospital, messing with her sense of integrity and self, and ultimately being the end of their relationship.
And of course, Sarah, who could forget the “How are we supposed to do our jobs if we don’t feel safe Maggie!” scream heard round the ED and of course, tazering a patient.
Somehow, they’ve managed to make the men seem sound even when they have issues.
When Ethan is ready to tackle his PTSD it’s done in the safety of Daniel’s office and intimate chats with Vicky.
Daniel’s is the same, he contacts his psychiatrist on a lovely walk and apologizes to Sarah for his behavior stemming from his depression; no harm no foul.
Even Will, whose behavior is supposed to be “erratic” the last couple of episodes is really just season 1 Will and not anything indicative of needing help.
I don’t like being right, well in this case, a little. But normally when I am its Med letting me down. Med has always been as subtle as a sledgehammer. They can almost NEVER keep a secret, they don’t trust their fans. So, most of you aren’t used to being kept in the dark. I can’t even begin to tell you how sad that just made me to write that. The fact is there is NOTHING to explain her behavior that will make you feel good. No matter how you spin it Ava slept with his father. She did. Ava got mad at Connor for not listening to her and cut herself on his blade; purposely. She did. Ava is the one who anonymously turned him in. She did. Ava is the one who sees herself as a victim, and Connor as ungrateful for everything she has “done” for him. She truly believes she’s is doing the right thing and that’s what makes her so delusional and dangerous. Take a breath, a walk, get a drink. But get good with the fact that the character you love isn’t stable and probably never has been.

Tel Aviv 2019: Straight outta Croatia to Eurovision with a confused angel lad and his lowkey over-enthusiastic mentor
youtube
Yeah, well, I definitely have hoped for this nation to finally finally bring back Dora as their national selection, as I myself have never really felt their internal entries since they abandoned it (well maybe except Nina from 2012 but even then by now I grew out of it softly). Not even Nina from 2016 which was tipped as a huge fan fave (though I’m so sorry for it getting completely lambasted in Eurovision, especially because of the poor clothing choice and Nina’s warbly notes here and there).
And they did! After like what, 7 solid years??? After the last Dora ending out with a disastrous end result and spawned a person to (more) stardom who even qualified a couple years back and this year he’s there to be a songwriter for his home country because of the Eurovision 2019 slogan inspiring him???? Well... yeah that happened. With having fought 15 other participants made up of familiar faces, up and coming starlets, the already legendary divas or just some people, he won as a songwriter for this next target of my review - the target that is aptly titled “The Dream” and is performed by a 19 year old up-and-coming pop star, Roko Blažević. Yep, Jacques Houdek won a NF but not with himself singing. Man did his magic game get stronger over the years since Dora 2011.
And interestingly enough, Jacques’s wizardry comes in with him being capable of selling chanceless music as something worth buying into. How can that happen???
Well, to be frank with you all, this song is not that bad, unlike everyone thinks it is. It feels like a low-rent musical ballad, sure, but it's not terribly composed or anything... well, I know I usually hate on those songs that like using mostly not the "verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus", but there are plenty of songs that mess with that structure that usually just omit the last two components (radio pop music) or don’t even need one, and they sound great. Here we have the omission of the last two components that more reminds me of “Grande amore” (I am not saying they’re comparable but still), as in, slow ballad in the F minor (”The Dream” even slaps a keychange on) that tries to sound majestic/dramatic, not very much so to be intense, just something theatrical I s’pose. And has a little too little time for another full verse so they just go to a bridge (and "Grande amore" had two long pre-choruses too?!?). I don’t hate this one, if I had to make a 2019 ranking this instant I’d put this in Top 30 somehow.
So what is there to be found that puts people off? They cannot be hating on Roko’s voice, which is really great for a young man like him. (In fact, God forbid I say one bad word about him, because some specific one on Twitter will have a beatdown with me because I dissed her hubby... so I’ll keep my mouth shut about any qualities of his :X) I guess it consists of several factors: 1) the song sounds dated; 2) the lyrics, especially in that chorus (I DREAM OF LOOOOOOVE, YOU DREAM OF LOOOOOOVE~ lol I actually dream of hatred, hatred will prevail >:) ); 3) the vocal volume is loud at parts; 4) the song is English-Croatian and somehow it should be sung in Croatian just to hide away the hideous understandable lyrics. My personal caveats are: 1) the song is too plodding and it shows a lot in that chorus with Roko holding his long notes (can we get tothe point FASTER?!); 2) the chorus lacks productional depth and maybe with a slight revamp (given Jacques wouldn’t be so stubborn about it!) it could have sounded the right amount of dramatic. If anything, I am GRATEFUL that it sounds more palatable than "My Friend", as THAT one was a joyful of cringey clichés tbh. The cheese became rotten and smelly and the sudden violin lead-in into the bridge still creeps me out. Goddamn it Jaq.
Not to mention Mr. Houdek is soooooo optimistic about his song, he finds everything in it perfect enough to not change it! Not the melody, not the language decisions, not the wings (did I tell you Roko wore wings on his NF performance??) - no! Did someone not tell him that Eurovision is rapidly evolving and his fantasies of coming top 3 with this song just better stay fantasies? Oh wait, it's the same man who once sang "dare to dream and make it real", of course he's stuck to his guns like super glue. Can't blame him, there were worse songs in top 3 over the years. Still though, the wings is a stupid idea. There should be something else involved if Jacques wants a performance to be memorable. Roko can't just stand there and only do what he's told to do by his guardian songwriter - granted he has to behave but still...
In the end, how would I summarize this tl;dr? I am one of a handful of folks who find this alright. There's a bigger minority who outright adores the song but I'm just there that likes this and nothing much more, honestly. Everything's just alright. Guess I'm sometimes soft enough to accept cheese, huh. But seriously, the mentoring behind the scenes... it's creepy to say the least. I'm happy Roko's having a helluva good time at least.
Approval factor: Oh I don't know with this one, statistically we can just go ahead and... try approving this? I’m not a huge fan of Croatian entries this decade, at least Slovenia redeemed themselves in my eyes last minute with “Sebi”, while even in my Croatian faves (they mostly are “Nebo” and “Crazy”, and I maaaaaybe like “Lighthouse” a bit too actually?) I see some negative qualities that completely overwhelm my liking for them. But since I legally find “The Dream” okay, I give this one a bit of a pass.
Follow-up factor: Sadly this kind of choice feels to me as a steady divedown in overall quality of what Croatia usually offers us. Well the decline was always on since “My Friend” followed up “Lighthouse” I suppose, or it's just so happens that Croatia sent the duds on this decade only in odd years ("Celebrate" was fun but tragic trash, "Mižerja" was pleasant I guess but everything here was miserable from the beginning and everyone still doesn’t get why “My Friend” qualified and “Crazy” didn’t). I like it though.
Qualification factor: I’d like to believe that this one can borderline sneak the fuck in to the finals for no reason other than Jacques knowing how to work things in his favour. Yes, I’m not writing this off completely. Although I still see some parts where this wouldn’t work out, it’s actually not 100% doomed... if anything, I at least don’t see it coming last in semi easily! It’s not as LAME as Iceland last year was. And it too was a basic love-peace-dreams message inserted into an older-timey-sounding singalong ballad and was given for a young singer that has a helluva lot of potential later ASIDE Eurovision. That is if they don't pretend Eurovision "ruined [their] careers, njeh!", of course. At least Roko can SANG live and maybe it will happen again that a singer's voice will make this surprisngly qualify over the song? We'll see. For now Jacques should just stay focused on how to make Roko's angel wings (sigh...) more memorable on stage in case the voice is not qualifying but the gimmicks are.
NATIONAL FINAL BONUS
EMA 2019 at least had positive surprises all over for a NF this non-cared-about-by-me. Dora just... did not. Really. This NF did not interest me all that much song-quality-wise, and it even had SIX MORE SONGS than EMA!!! Crazy, huh?? But it’s okay, I can talk about the show to you if you want me to:
• From the Dora participants list announcement I was mostly excited to hear like two entries, and I'll mention both of them right away separately. And it's by two artists I've heard of before a lot! Though this first one kind of made me feel like I've been somewhat betrayed... enter Luka Nižetić who has got a nice vast catalogue of songs now - soft song(s), upbeat summer songs, and so on. And I kinda liked some of those songs of his I heard (if you're looking for recommendations, give "Vječno" a listen!), but “Brutalero”, his actual Dora 2019 entry was... on a whole different level. Dude, when was ripping off “Mi gente” ever useful?? It’s the year people were chasing after “Fuego” as the Latinesque bop to copy, not this! I hate it when people rehash annoying (but catchy) songs, and it’s certainly worse when they do it as their Eurovision NF entry. Brutal. And I actually remember hyping him before hearing the song, which is a bigger facepalm-worthy moment of mine. When will I ever learn?! ;( Thank God for the juries who served this song right. IDC if the revamp version of this made it any better, I’ll be fuming over this not being an inspired song. Oh and the comic book cartoon style made this brutally laughable to me, I said what I said. It might have entertained some kids though. So to summarise, Luka’s capable of having bops out, but “Brutalero” ain’t it, sis.
youtube
• Well guess what - Friendship ended with LUKA, Now MANNTRA is my best friend! Hell yeah lol. Did I tell you I like rock music so much? So I really foresaw kind of liking Manntra's song “In the Shadows” and rooting for them based on me knowing their name (just like Luka but oop), and in fact I really did root for them in the end! I wish I supported them more than Luka instead. They’re bangin’. They’re blazin’. They’re pure awesomeness. Their costumes. THAT BREAKDOWN. Magic. Should’ve won, and if them winning were any forbidden because Croatia is just refusing to accept stuff I’d stan for, at least come second. Screw Luka, screw Lorena. Bring the rock music back. ^^
youtube
• oh yeah and the others I guess. Well, if I had to recommend a few entries, here goes: if you’re nostalgic for old-timey early 2000′s bops (in the style of “Everyway That I Can”), you go and listen to the aforementioned Lorena Bućan‘s entry, “Tower of Babylon”. If you dreamed of one of the Femminem singers becoming a 60s retro artiste (actually you did not, that sounds very utter random), go check her project’s (Gelato Sisters) entry, “Back to That Swing”. If you’re here for THE QUEEN DOMENICA, go ahead, check out “Indigo”, the ultimate shopping mall background music anthem. My actual other favourite together with Manntra was Beta Sudar though, as “Don’t Give Up” as some really nice pop I guess. You see what I mean when I said that Dora this year did not interest me all that much song-quality-wise? Well ofc some songs were nice but that's all and too much 'just niceness' is slowly breaking me honestly. I would have gladly cancelled the NF and put Manntra through internally instead. Epic boys deserve an epic platform to showcase themselves, I don’t make the rules here.
Thankfully that's that out of the way, now I'm just going to wish this sweet little angel man all the best in Tel Aviv and not to be too upset if he flops. I know Jacques would be upset, but for that he shouldn't put Roko through a similar mind process also...

A Beatles fan gets back to where he once belonged
Tumblr media
(Some albums from my collection)
(First of three parts)
As a really big fan of the Beatles, I have always been somewhat in awe of those who are really HUGE fans of the famed singing group.
They just seemed to enjoy the music on a whole different level, with thorough knowledge and appreciation for what was produced by this unique musical foursome in their eight-plus years together.
So, over the last four months, as a retired-geezer-bucket-list endeavor, I took a huge leap towards earning my “huge fan” badge.
I re-listened to, re-enjoyed and studied — consulting at least five books — each of the some 300 Beatles’ recordings, as contained on their 13 official albums/CDs along with many of their various related versions (on the three two-CD anthologies, various collections like “One” and the BBC live sessions).
I am blogging about it because, honestly, I’d just like to share my experience and put my basic impressions down in writing.  It was riveting and sinfully fun, spending too much money and too much time — including many breaks to just sit back, travel down memory lane and simply be entertained by these pop songs/albums that took me through the 1960s, from my pre-teen to college years — on what’s really a rather personal, trivial pursuit.
But I’m also holding out hope that my findings could be interesting for other Beatles fans, of whatever level.
Quick bottom line: I am more impressed now than I was before with the output of this pop group and the incredible blending of the four multi-talented musicians Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.  I’ll write about why and list the highlights of what I learned in the second part.
First off, though, I should define “really big fans,” my current state and that of many millions of my contemporaries worldwide from the sixties.
This group is familiar with all the Beatles recordings (able to identify them when hearing just the opening notes), their background as a group and individuals (back to teenage years), their basic timeline as recording artists (who authored what compositions and when), their alternate recordings, their post-Beatles recordings, their relations (girlfriends, wives), and their basic life stories.
In other words, we just just paid attention all these years, watching the relevant movies and videos, buying their records and reading at least the most reliable major books about them — first by Hunter Davies and then by Bob Spitz — while also picking up more than a few of the annual money-grabbing “new” ones.
I’ve read two books by “first wives” Patti Boyd (“Wonderful Tonight”) and Cynthia Lennon (“John”) and Lennon’s sister, “My Brother.”
I also bought one of the first song-by-song compilation books, “Beatlesongs” (1989) by William J. Dowling. For decades, it was my go-to source for day-to-day inquires like “who played that great bass part on ‘Hey Bulldog’”?
By being a big fan, my Christmas and birthday presents from family and friends often have been Beatles stuff (when they tired of stuff feeding my other passion, baseball) including three coffee table books, a box of “The BBC Archives” TV and radio broadcast material, and three other books going into each of the group’s songs.
From all that, I am left wondering if the Beatles ever had a private, unphotographed, unrecorded (in writing or audio) stretch long than five minutes.
It was the final gift last Christmas,  “Revolution in the Head” by Ian MacDonald, that propelled me to finally take on this long-planned intensive study of the Beatles’ music.
MacDonald’s definitive work, updated three times since published in 1994, is classified as a textbook by the Los Angeles Public Library. It goes into great detail on the musical and sociological aspects of each song so it was sometimes beyond my sphere of interest. But it was most useful to me by going song-by-song in chronological order, referencing all the alternative versions of the songs and telling where to find them.
Along the way, I also found the fascinating (although partially disputed) book “Here, There and Everywhere” by Geoff Emerick, a teenage recording studio prodigy who helped engineer (record, mix) just about every Beatles song, either as an assistant in his teens or the primary engineer in his early 20s.
His first-person observations helped flesh out the more technical aspects or third-party accounts of the Beatles songs.
(Other books used for the song-by-song marathon: “The Beatles: A Hard Day’s Write. The Stories Behind Every Song” by Steve Turner and “All the Songs. The Story Behind Every Beatles Release,” a massive, picture-filled coffee table book by Jean-Michel Guesdon and Phillippe Margotin.)
Meanwhile, there are a ton of other written works out there awaiting my attention once this project is done – exhaustive books by Mark Lewisohn; memoirs by the group’s producer (and Fifth Beatle early on) George Martin and original drummer Pete Best; “Shout: The Beatles in their Generation” by Philip Norman; and “Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now,” by Barry Miles — to name a few . . . in my price range (more on that in part three). There’s a seemingly never-ending flow of written material and reworked music.
And it’s fair to assume “really huge fans” have read them all. (I’ll delve more into what constitutes that fan level in parts two and three.)
The original idea for trying this project came after advanced technology, resolved legal issues and a favorable marketplace brought about the production of the entire Beatles catalogue on CDs nine years ago.
I had tried keeping up with the Beatles’ output over the years on vinyl, eight-track tapes and cassettes but, for one reason or another, had some holes.
Nearly my entire Beatles collection of vinyl albums was stolen from my college dorm room in the early 1970s. I then rebought some of the biggest ones at that time but then sat back and waited for releases in the latest medium (eight-track, cassettes, CDs, digital) and lost track of what I had.
So, when the complete collection on CD (remastered to sound even better!) became available, I perked up. But the price tag ($150-200) gave me pause.
Then came an offer to buy the whole shebang at half price. I was ready to pounce.
But there remained another major issue.
The Beatles’ studio personnel, I learned, recorded each of their songs in both monaural (“mono”) and stereo. Each version had/has its strong backers, especially as the original tapes were revisited and reproduced with improved quality (both in stereo and mono) for the latest CD versions.
For the “true experience” of listing to the Beatles songs, did one really have to possess and listen to both stereo and mono versions? The inner Beatles fanatic and picky perfectionist told me “yes.” My practical and realistic self, though, said that’s crazy, unnecessary and an expense only the crazy wealthy fan would want to pay.
Luckily, many music critics recognized the dilemma this posed for the average fan. From reading a few of their comparisons and conclusions, I came up with a fairly consistent recommendation for which albums are best in mono and which are best in stereo:
Mono sounds best for “Please Please Me,” “With the Beatles,” “Hard Days Night,” “Beatles For Sale” and “Help.” Stereo is recommended for “Rubber Soul,” “Revolver,” “Magical Mystery Tour” “The Beatles (The White Album)” “Yellow Submarine” “Let It Be” and “Abbey Road.” (The latter two were only mixed in stereo anyway.)
Mono and stereo versions of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” both offer great listening experiences, and the 50th anniversary remix in 2017 added yet another aural mix.
The mono box set includes all the songs released as singles (45 rpm) and not on any of the basic albums (though some, those that rose to no. 1 on Billboard lists, are included in the “Beatles — 1” album/CD).
Emerick actually recommended the mono mixes of  “Revolver” and “Sgt. Pepper,” which he engineered. He said much more care was given to the mono versions than the stereo ones, which were rushed at the conclusion of the project.
He wrote:
“True Beatles fans would do well to avail themselves of the mono versions of Sgt. Pepper and Revolver because far more time and effort went into those mixes than the stereo mixes. The stereo versions of those albums have an unnecessary surfeit of panning and effects like ADT (Automatic Double Tracking) and flanging. (Fellow engineer) Richard and I would sometimes get carried away with them because of their novelty value . . . especially if George Martin wasn’t there to rebuke us. Needless to say, it was John who especially loved that kind of overkill — we’d sometimes whack something on too severely just to see how it sounded, only to find him winking at us, saying, ‘More!’”
It should be noted that Emerick wrote his book in 2007, before all the remastering of the Beatles albums took place. So, perhaps the new stereo mixes enhance those versions to the point that they now are preferable.
And then there’s the whole “Let It Be” controversy, when the original recordings were turned over to “wall of sound” maestro Phil Specter, reportedly by John Lennon, much to the chagrin of McCartney.
So, a stripped down version of those songs “Let It Be-Naked,” was produced.
For my listening project, I listened to that naked CD as well as a number of mono vs. stereo renditions of Beatles’ songs.
Basically, I agreed with experts (they are so grateful, I’m sure!) that the early albums are best in mono.
This was a time when few people had quality stereo systems, if any stereo at all (I had a small portable one in my room), and thus much more time and care was given to the mono versions (says my books). Those tunes in stereo sound pretty tinny and awkward to listen to (says my ears), especially with headphones (e.g. the drums and base in one ear, the voices in another).
Of course, musical preferences, like all reactions to art, are wholly subjective. When I posted a list of my personal choices for “five worst Beatles songs” (yes, they did produce some songs I cannot stand: “Rain,” “Paperback Writer,” “Baby You’re a Rich Man,” “I’m Down,” “Helter Skelter”) on a Facebook site, several respondents said the tunes were actually among their favorites. Some fans treat all of the group’s output as wonderful and any criticism as sacrilege.
In the books I consulted, Beatles tunes certified as “classic” by one author sometimes were depicted as “a disaster” by another. Even the Beatles disparaged as “garbage” some songs I (and others) enjoy.
Typical of most listeners, my reactions when sampling the stereo and mono recordings are probably based on how I first heard the songs. And for nearly all of them, that would be mono. Anything different sounds off kilter.
Some examples: The stereo “Taxman,” the lead song on side one of “Revolver,” has the bass and rhythm section on the left side while the lead guitar and percussion are on the right, with vocals in both. It sounds wrong to my ears, which first heard all the music coming out of both speakers (mono). Likewise, on the same album, “She Said She Said” (a favorite of mine) splits the instruments into separate channels and doesn’t sound quite right to me.
Still, the later works, as remastered, do have much greater depth and clarity in the stereo versions. Songs like “Martha, My Dear,” “Savoy Truffle” and “Glass Onion” sound terrific (I played them over and over). Likewise, most of Sgt. Pepper, which was remastered a second time for the 50th anniversary CD, is fine in stereo.
In several cases, like “Martha My Dear,” I enjoyed a song in the latest version far more than I did originally.
Which brings us to my general observations on what I heard and read. That would be part two, coming tomorrow.

Out Of The Past (1947)
“Nothing in the world is any good unless you can share it.”
Tumblr media
French director, Jacques Tourneur's ‘Out Of The Past’ has over the years become what’s considered the best Film Noir ever made, though it somewhat disputes over that title with ‘Double Indemnity’, a lot of people find one of the two the best.
I have however during the time that I’ve been participating in Noirvember (there’s more to cover), obviously quite a few films in the genre, and I can instantly say without hesitation that ‘Out Of The Past’ has been my favorite one that I’ve watched so far.
It’s also save to say that outside the context of Noir and Noirvember, it’s simply one of the best films I’ve had the pleasure of watching, just one of those films that quite simply put leaves you feeling like you’ve just watched something spectacular and well crafted.
it makes me regret that I didn’t take the decision to participate in Noirvember earlier, anyhow it’s wonderful to immerse yourself fully in a genre, discover and learn about it and obviously watch a few films of it.
And Out Of The Past was along with Double Indemnity one of the films that my Cinema History book kept mentioning (probably one of the first books I’d try to save in a fire) and various corners of the internet kept recommending to me. By now I was immensely curious about the film, even so much as its film poster somehow exuded a certain cool.
So later I sat down to watch it. And I think it speaks very positively of the film, that I watched it with someone who’s absolutely not a fan of anything that’s not in color and so-called Classics, but she claims to have had as much fun with this one as I did.
When we were about ten minutes into the film, and the picture starts to craft an air of mystery and intrigue and you already know something’s wrong, she said “I love this”, “It’s already so suspenseful, it’s like one of those cheap detective books”.
And with that, she pretty much hit the nail on the head. I found out that Noir works closely with pulp fiction, which is actually nowadays usually considered quite cheap entertainment, the thing that’s considered a guilty pleasure to read; but they did sometimes have interesting themes in them, and filmmakers saw that and could work with it.
Noir’s a dark and pessimistic genre, it literally means black in French, that its name is European also has its reason, it’s what French critics started to call the genre, but it fits perfectly.
It originated in a pessimistic period, before and until after World war two, many of its directors and stars, we’re Europeans that fled Europe, so while it’s an American genre, it’s safe to say that it’s a genre in which both continents held each other’s hands.
War doesn’t bring out good qualities in humans generally, but even during wartime, people have been known to undertake courageous and goodhearted actions. And the genre, some films more than others reflect that.
Most of them very clearly seem to say the world is rotten and the people, even the ones that don’t know it are bad, sometimes they become forcedly so; but it very has the idea that everyone has the potential to become a bad person, a person capable of double-crossing and murder, murder seems to be written in capital letter M all over the genre.
Yet under all that seeming bleakness, pessimism, hopelessness and darkness, there are glints of hope and hints at the possibility of a happy ending, the tragic thing about the genre is that it’s acknowledged but it doesn’t go there, sometimes because it’s characters just can’t take that route, they just aren’t able to connect, and chose to either save their own skin or will take a route that’s going to going to endanger them.
And what I loved so much about ‘Out Of The Past’ is that it very much has those elements, and becomes in a way almost a retelling of a tragic, doomed to fail love story, only it shouldn’t have been doomed, the characters made it so themselves.
It very much plays with what other  films in the genre also play with, ambiguity between good and bad, and it has as I’ve mentioned all the elements of the genre, a troubled protagonist whose past comes back to haunt him, character’s smoking like chimneys, a femme fatale, pretty night scenes, and a large part of the story taking place in an urban environment.
But still something about this one is unique; as many people have recognized, out of all the Noir I’ve seen in November this is the one that’s really engraved in my memory. Some people say it doesn’t even seemingly look like Noir, at first sight.
It’s too bright and too sunlit, too much of it takes place in sunlight and in pretty surroundings, that have nothing to do with seedy, crime-filled streets of some films in the genre.
Still agreed it’s agreed that it is Noir, as it has in its storyline and in its cinematography typical elements.
But when I myself thought about it more deeply (and I’m not the only one) you can almost say that the film has two parts, one that looks less typically Noir and one that’s more typically so, night scenes, fights, double-crossing, playing with shadows. But amazingly it watches like one cohesive whole.
It might be somewhat of a lighter one in its genre, literally in its lightning, but also as in that it really builds your hope up and for a moment when you’re watching for the first.
You think everything even after the characters has been double-crossing each other like crazy, you still think it’s two lovers have a chance of being together, but then the film makes sure to remind you what kind of film you’re watching.
And that’s what I found so great about it, that it’s two lovers have moments of happiness and you see what could be there, and because of their own doing, it doesn’t happen, and it’s tragically and sublimely sad.
What I truly loved about this one is watching the relationships between characters, and watching Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer act opposite each other, there’s a ton of other actors in there (amongst them Kirk Douglas) but Mitchum and Greer compliment each other perfectly and it’s a joy to watch. Its storyline doesn’t even really matter too much, and it’s a challenge, to sum up...
Mitchum Bailey is a private detective who tries to say goodbye to his job after a few nasty experiences. As a garage owner, he tries to start a new life with his girlfriend Ann (Virginia Huston). His anonymity, however, is short-lived when thug looking Joe Stephanos (Paul Valentine) manages to trace him on behalf of professional gambler Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas).
Whit was shot some time ago by his beloved Kathie (Jane Greer). Since then, she has disappeared from his life, as well as $ 40,000. Whit wants her and his money back and asks Jeff to go and investigate. Somewhat cautiously, Jeff takes the job, old habits die hard I guess.
He meets Kathie in Mexico. She tells him exactly what’s going on but nothing about the disappeared money. Jeff believes her, falls for the charms of this femme fatale and tells Whit that he was unable to find her. Soon, however, Kathie doesn’t seem as sweet as she looks anymore...
Does Kathie really care about Jeff? Does she love him despite her inability to endure difficult situations for him and despite her fatalistic attitude towards love?
And how sincere is Jeff towards her? Has he succumbed to her again? These questions haunt your mind while seeing 'Out of the Past'.
As traditionally in this genre, the riddles around a fateful love remain unclear. Who is lying, who is honest? Nobody can be trusted and that makes watching a film noir of this level is so irresistible.
And as it should be; you don’t get clear answers to all of these questions, and thus as I’ve seen in a lot of reviews, people speculate and come to their own conclusions when watching the film.
You see two interesting directions: In some Jeff is the victim. An innocent man, forced to make bad choices but who didn’t enjoy them, but who fell victim to the whims and seduction of a femme fatale, to them Kathie’s a monster, that tormented an innocent man, and there’s no real effort to look any further.
No one in the genre is entirely innocent, Jeff’s aware he’s being played but still consciously chooses for the woman he knows is no good, he still acted out of free will, no one really forced him into anything.
And then the femme fatale herself, a monster? Or just a flawed human being that made mistakes? As I mentioned when it comes to that, you see people mostly veering in one of these two directions.
Personally I think she’s one of the most brilliant characters in the film; Greer portrays her in a subtle yet confident way, that’s almost dizzyingly exciting to watch, she infuses her role with confidence (the kind of confidence of a woman who knows how beautiful she is) but at other times also a deep vulnerability and even fear.
Throughout the film she’s in a world that surrounds her with violent men she’s afraid of the man that she stole the money from, she believes he’d never leave her alone and would almost certainly come after her, and she turns out to be right.
You can understand why she stole the money even, she hated the guy's guts and wanted to get away from him, and if you’re running away from a dude with anger issues, why not do it in a place with an agreeable climate? I certainly wouldn’t like hearing this:
“You're gonna take the rap and play along. You're gonna make every exact move I tell you. If you don't, I'll kill you. And I'll promise you one thing: it won't be quick. I'll break you first. You won't be able to answer a telephone or open a door without thinking, 'This is it.' And it when it comes, it still won't be quick. And it won't be pretty. You can take your choice.”
The exciting element in Greer’s performance comes from, how composed seemingly even cold she seems throughout much of the film, but when you look closer there’s intense emotion, and she remains a riddle, a mystery.
I spent much of the film trying to read her, and she very much has both bad and good at her, she doesn’t regret shooting a man, and when Jeff fights another man, after she speaks the words “why don’t you break his head, Jeff?” she seems almost aroused watching the two men fight, which certainly indicates some twisted personality trait.
But then she also ultimately seems to really love him, as she later in the film goes back to Jeff and gives herself fully over to him, as she chooses to trust him fully, but he is at this point deceiving, maybe still in love with her, but certainly not willing to die for her, and he’s posing himself as more in love than he really is.
But at this time; Jeff has already decided she can’t be trusted, as he told her:  “You can never help anything, can you? You're like a leaf that the wind blows from one gutter to another.” and he’s unwilling to give her a second chance or to forgive, and on that tragic note, both their loveless fates are sealed. So it can also be regarded in my eyes as a tragic love story, maybe Jeff could even be seen as a coward in his inability to forgive in love.
The big joy in the film, however, is how good Mitchum and Greer are (that and how beautifully filmed it is), while Greer seems to do not much else than bat her big doe eyes with their luscious lashes at Mitchum and make him fall head over heels with her, she has as I said a subtle emotionality, there’s depth to this femme fatale if it isn’t clear, I loved her performance.
And Mitchum’s Jeff has an air of indifferent, unforced cool, and seems to come across almost as if he doesn’t give a damn about anything or anyone that surrounds him, as if he’s somehow outside of present events, he only seems to care about either Kathie or ultimately himself.
Mitchum portrays this figure almost perfectly. Like Humphrey Bogart (who was considered for the role, but not even Bogie could be at two places at once ...), he has a certain inner peace about him, which gives him independence and self-confidence.
The man behind this film is French director Jacques Tourneur, who made his name in the United States in 1942 with both the artistically and commercially successful 'Cat People' (which is noted on my list of stuff I want to see). Tourneur was a master in creating the right mood and atmosphere and that skill came in handy when he made 'Out of the Past'.
The typical film noir look - with striking use of shadows and contrast - is certainly present here (the fight scene is a beautiful playing around with shadows as well as the scenes on the beach) but less dominant than in, for example, 'Double Indemnity' (1944). It makes 'Out of the Past' a film that looks pleasant and easy and literally and figuratively is somewhat lighter than its genre and contemporaries.
Out of the past is a dark, cynical treat with an intelligent script, razor-sharp dialogues and a finale that stays with you. Highly recommended!

Stripped - Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: Being a high powered publicist, the reader is hired to work with the destructive rock star Jensen Ackles. Her task is to revamp his difficult image from the ground up. Will the reader succeed? Or will she get sucked into his crazy life?
Pairing: rockstar!Jensen x Reader
Word Count: 1,175
Tumblr media
“Well, shit. I was expecting room service but fuck that noise. Wanna be my breakfast, sweet girl?” Jensen sucks in his bottom lip, practically radiating sin while his eyes drink you in. Who the hell answers the door like that? Jensen motherfucking Ackles.
“No thanks.” You smirk in amusement, taking in the rock star’s disheveled but still delicious appearance. This man will make or break your fucking world, you’re still torn which way you want it to go.
“Then how will I know if you’re a good girl or a bad girl?”
“I have to say…you’re even more entertaining than I thought you’d be.” The giggle that slips past your lips erases Jensen’s arrogant smile, a pissed off scowl is now staring back at you.
“I’m too hung over for fucking games. Who the hell are you?” He abruptly snarls, chugging down the vodka hiding in his glass of orange juice.
“Y/N L/N. I’ve been hired as your new publicist. I specialize in crisis management.”
“I must still be high cause I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about, darlin. There’s no crisis here…just the opposite. I got laid twice last night and once this morning. Each girl was hotter than the next. Shit is good.”
“You…Jensen. You’re the crisis and I get the wonderful task of managing your ass. Now move, I’m coming in. We have a lot to talk about.” Taken aback from your insolent response, the rock star hesitates before springing into action.
“What the…Cohen!” Jensen flies past you marching into the next room, his exhausted manager Matt Cohen appears seemingly unaffected by his client’s reaction. With a kind smile, he jumps to his feet and pulls you in for a long overdue hug. At least someone around here has fucking manners.
“Good to see you, Y/N.”
“You too, Matty. It’s been awhile.” You chuckle making yourself comfortable on one of the plush couches, ignoring the death stare being thrown your way.
“Oh so you two know each other? Awesome. Wanna explain to me what she’s doing here, dude?” Jensen growls at Matt, his glare so intense that you’re relieved it’s not directed towards you.
“Y/N and I go way back so relax, Ackles. We don’t get to hang out as much anymore because our work schedules are so crazy. It's not a good thing when you need to see her professionally…it means you’re up shit’s creek. And that’s exactly where you are, buddy.“
“Bloody hell…I’m fine! I don’t need some random chick invading my life and fucking it all up. And you clearly picked her because she’s hot and you think that will sway me over this bullshit!”
“Stop being a prick and just listen to Y/N for Christ’s sake.”
With a quick eye roll at Jensen’s dramatic behavior, you decide to jump right into the god damn fire. This isn’t the first time a client has been uncooperative and you know for a fucking fact that it won’t be the last.
“To start off I wanna say that I’m a huge fan of your voice. And I loved the raw sound of your last album. It’s definitely a favorite.” You do your best to hold in a chuckle, the apparent confusion on his face is just adorable.
“I’m looking forward to the new one that’s coming out too.”
“Uh…thank you.”
“It’s just too bad that no one else gives a fuck.” You add nonchalantly, more focused on typing something into your iPad.
“What…”
“Along with the new album, you have a tour coming up in a few months, yes? Being a fan, I was curious about it so I googled you. And instead of finding out what venues you’ll hit or when new music will be released…I found all sorts of fun stuff.” Pretending your new client isn’t shooting daggers your way, you continue.
“Let’s hear some of it shall we? I’m only going to read a few headlines, otherwise we’ll be here all friggin day…”
“Fresh off his arrest last week, Ackles is already back to his destructive ways.”
“How long before rock star Ackles will end up back in rehab?”
“Playboy Ackles leaves strip club Voyeur with a stripper on each arm.”
“Jensen Ackles: drunk and high. What else is new?”
Suddenly feeling a heavy gaze, you snap your head up to witness Jensen practically foaming at the mouth. Letting out a somewhat strangled moan, he hops up from his seat and starts pacing furiously. Matt gestures at you to keep going, knowing full well that all of this needs to be said.
“I didn’t sign off on this!” The rockstar barks into the air, realizing the only thing left to do is call his record label and bitch them out.
As if Matt can read his friend’s mind, “The label is about to drop you, man. The negative press has gone on for too long. They now look at you as more of a liability than anything else.”
“That’s complete bullshit!” Jensen stubbornly fires back, anger clouding his mind.
“No it’s fucking reality. You’ve always been a money maker, regardless of your bad reputation so the label looked the other way. But now your actions are affecting business. One of the three tour promoters has already dropped out. The other two are not far behind. If there are no promoters then there’s no tour resulting in no money. I could go on but you know how all of this shit works.” Matt finishes with a pained expression, clearly worried that this will all go straight to hell.
“You have to think about what you want, Jensen. You’ll continue to lose money, credibility and respect if you keep living this way.” You strongly stress, unexpectedly grabbing his attention.
“Jensen doesn’t get a say, Y/N. This is happening for his own good. Even if his career were to magically turn around without your help, he’d probably still party himself into the ground.” Matt forcefully declares.
“This is fucking ridiculous, Y/N! What the hell are you gonna make me do?”
“First thing…you’ll leave this high profile five star hotel and stay somewhere more off the grid. There will be no appearances whatsoever - personal or professional. You’ll also stay off social media and cut off contact with anyone that isn’t necessary. You will basically drop off the face of the earth for as long as needed. That’s step one.”
“Sure why not. I’ll do all that.” Jensen agrees unconvincingly, his words practically dripping with sarcasm.
“I know you will because I’ll be right there to make sure of it.” You quickly retort, a crooked smile tugging at your mouth as his drops open in shock.
“Wait…you’re gonna fucking babysit me?!”
“Buckle up, Ackles. It’s gonna be a shitty ride.”

Dear Sone, Just trust our girls, we been thru this and we can still go thru this crucial moment. Let’s stay together and support our girls!!!!
United We SONE – 8/16, credit oniontaker
-
17-08-16
For those of you who have been here for a while, you probably know me. Some of you may disagree with my how I conduct myself, but you know where my heart really is. You also know, whenever things are serious, whether you can or cannot believe what I write
For those of you who are new, hello and welcome. Try to keep up with the rest of the pack because this patch of fandom is going to be bumpy.
I’ve done a quick scan on twitter before writing this and I think most people have gotten the gist of my preliminary tweets, whether directly or via SONE hivemind. That’s encouraging since you’ll know where this post is headed.
Bringing you up to speed
SM’s contracts and negotiations were under wraps for the most part until I posted about how it worked, and luckily as it’s become common knowledge it makes my job easier.
SM usually start their idols off on a 5 year contract.
Idols are then usually offered 3 year extension deals with wholly different terms from their first contract (read: a lot better for them).
Idols are made to negotiate individually.
In SNSD’s case, like with almost all idols, their parents get involved with the negotiation (because Korean system of seniority and hierarchy makes negotiation between the agency and young adults very difficult).
Terms are loosely “renegotiated” at the beginning of every year of their employment, using the original contract as a framework.
Actual renewal negotiations are also done during the beginning of the year that it expires (so for SNSD, 2014 and 2017).
January is a pretty tense month for every idol under SM.
Where the the timeline begins
Take yourself back to 2014. I think I was the first person to break the news at the time. SM usually likes to wrap up everything by the end of January but things went a few days over the deadline as SM were still finalizing terms with Jessica.
SNSD were doing great in January 2014. “I Got a Boy” had gotten them more critical praise and attention, they’d won all the awards, they were sweeping through with album sales, merchandise and had proven that they were relatively versatile in dividing themselves up into smaller units to find successes in multiple fields.
I can’t go into any details on the terms but understand that SM gave them a very nice and cushy deal. Things went south towards the end of the year when things played out the way it did. I will still maintain to this day that no matter how many OT8 or Golden Stars will accuse someone or another, the fuller picture that I’ve been privileged enough to see has been that neither SNSD nor Jessica can be blamed for what happened in that time. I didn’t want to touch on it but I have to because it’s a relevant event on the timeline. Since I do, I need to stress that point as much as I can before moving on.
In the remaining contract period, SM got distracted with huge plans involving China and groups that were going to debut. Talk to anyone who claims to be an insider in SM and they will tell you that they are woefully understaffed and their leadership easily distracted by grand plans and ideas. Sure, we got Lion Heart but I think any SONE who was following events unfold in real time would agree that SM made full or good use of the girls; and so SM didn’t get back what they had initially expected, even though really, they were to blame.
The events of this year
Fastforward to the end of 2016 and January, yes the all important month of January, of 2017: SM want to average out what they had wanted from the previous three years with what they will be getting in 2017 to 2020. They want SNSD members to take the lowest possible deal on the table.
SM are fielding several plays at once right now.
Carrot and stick the girls: Show the girls how much SM can give SNSD, and then snatch it away abruptly. You’ve probably seen enough gangster movie stereotypes to know a “play ball and things will stay nice.” when you see it in real life. I’m telling you as someone who’s been watching this play out for years from different companies… this is the entertainment industry version of it.
Carrot and stick the fans: Show the fans how much SNSD they could get, and then snatch it away abruptly. They want us to be worked up into a fever pitch and then beg for more, ignorantly, because we don’t know what’s going on under the surface. I’m telling you that begging SNSD members to “PLEASE STAY UNNIEEEE” is playing right into their hands.
Divide and conquer: they want to divide fandoms into pressuring individual members into doing what SM wants, since the public will be somewhat indifferent and fans will be the tastemakers in the community campaigning and complaining about the situation. I’m going to go deeper into this below.
I think they’ve already released to the media that some members have re-signed contracts and while that is “technically true”, “technically true” is dangerously misleading. Contracts are individually different and each member wants different solo activities (whether it’s acting, singing, variety shows) so all of the terms are different. The situation is intensely complicated and SM are taking advantage of that and trying to make sure that their misleading, simple narrative “some members signed but some members won’t”.
When in doubt, SONEs, where do we look? We look to the girls.
During this comeback, when have the girls ever looked like they were singling anyone out? They don’t blame any of themselves for the choices they have made or the stance that they stand. You can feel how much they respect the wishes of, and trust the intentions of every other member in the group, despite this picture of a divided group that SM wants to paint.
SM want there to be confusion and in-fighting, because we all know how in-fighting ends: we flock to our main biases and start pointing fingers at individual fandoms of other members to blame. This cannot be allowed to happen because that is clearly not going to help the girls in any way.
As much detail as I can share right now
The member(s) who are still fighting SM at the negotiation table have refused to give in, even when SM issued an ultimatum to decide by January 31st (or else).
I mean it’s crazy that they’ve been able to hold against SM for EIGHT MONTHS without giving in; our girls are strong women but I also don’t think you could do that without being able to believe in the support of the girls who had already re-signed. The crazier thing is that winning in small incrememtns right up until the comeback too; they were successful in negotiating SM to make changes to make the unfair contract fairer but quite frankly, it still is unfair.
It’s only now that SM are dangling a lot of different group projects in their face, hoping they’ll cave in for short-term things when the remainder of the three years .
Going forward
There is no grand conspiracy from the K-Pop industry to dismantle SNSD. This is brinksmanship at best and feels more like an inside job. K-Pop is a business and if you’ll excuse the pun, you’re seeing the business end of it courtesy of SM Entertainment.
SM doesn’t always do this but when they do, things can get ugly.
This whole promo cycle. Being edited out of shows. Being excluded arbitrarily after those amazing teasers and a full week of epic action, drawing in huge numbers to TV shows and album sales outpacing manufacturing speed.
As fans, I don’t think we should, however passively, rush the girls, or pressure them into making decisions. SM is trying to use SONEs as a weapon against SNSD and we cannot allow this.
Trust in SNSD to make the right moves and continue to love and support them without picking sides.

Somewhere along the Lincoln Highway in Iowa with The Banana Splits
Hi there, neighbour, Going my way, East or west on the Lincoln Highway? Hey there, Yankee, Give out a great big "thankee"; You're in God's Country ...
--theme song from the radio drama Lincoln Highway (NBC, 1940-42), an anthology of stories set along the course thereof (a/k/a US Hwy. 30) between New York and San Francisco
Let's just say it's somewhere along the eastern part of Iowa's portion of the Lincoln Highway, roughly between Ames and its crossing the Mississippi River at Clinton. Just a typical Lincoln Highway small town having gone in decline for some years, but still managing to keep going thanks to a modest general store, cafe, gas station/convenience store and "opry house" known to host small-time dance bands on occasion.
And let's further say it's a dull, nearly leaden-looking winter's day when they say snow could fall pretty much any moment now. Especially an intense, heavy snow of the sort best associated with blizzard-like conditions, the sort which can disrupt travel for days on end.
Nonetheless, this particular stretch of the Lincoln Highway in Iowa seems deader than a doornail with pretty much local traffic handling things and the cafe dominated by area farmers seeking some sort of respite from the "home cooking" for want of much farm work to be done, yet known for their breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches on oversized buns (something of an Iowa gournet speciality) as have attracted traffic among Lincoln Highway fans in season.
But hark! is there some sort of tour bus approaching, and in garishly psychadelic colours to boot? 'Tis that of The Banana Splits--Bingo, Drooper, Fleagle and Snorky--driving westerly on said Lincoln Highway with no particular concert venue in mind. It was getting to be lunchtime anyway, and Fleagle, driving the tour bus this time around, announces that there will be a break for lunch at this particular cafe ("And I understand the pork tenderloin sandwiches are supposed to be rather good here!"--Fleagle), with (hopefully) much conversation as well. And to imagine such a colourful-looking and at once unconventional bunch in small-town Iowa along the Lincoln Highway was hardly on the minds of middle-aged farmers otherwise approaching retirement leaving the cafe, and just be thankful there weren't exercises in panic attack or shock as they left their bus and entered the cafe.
All in all, the quartet were seated at a decent little table in an otherwise modest-sized cafe for a small town such as this, with a somewhat smart-alecky-sounding waitress who looked as if she just left the nearest high school and was otherwise unable to find "honest work" per workfare serving them. And to a beast, all four ordered the legendary pork tenderloins the place was notorious for, even as she struck up conversation:
"OK, who's the leader of this rather eccentric bunch?"
"None other than Fleagle, myself and in the fur!"
"And I take it you're not the glasses-wearing sort," retorted the waitress.
"Correct. The rest of us are." And the remainder thus introduced themselves:
"I'm Bingo, the drummer and chief bottle-washer for the Banana Splits--not to mention resident joker."
"Drooper's my name. Pulling off electric guitar and backing vocals--"
(Snorky, whose speech is little more than honking and vocalisations chimed in. Drooper responding--)
"That elephant is Snorky. He plays the electronic organ, and I have to interpret for him by and large."
"Well," the waitress shot back, "don't that beat all for a band like The Banana Splits! In any event, I'll get your pork tenderloin sandwiches ready in a few, and--what would you like to drink?"
"You got iced tea?" asked Drooper. "I'll get a pitcher of it ready for you all," was how the waitress replied. "And what's more, we brew it ourselves from tea leaves; none of that concentrate crap for us Iowans!"
In any event, the conversation got rather hilarious and joke-laden as much when the sandwiches were being prepared as when the four went through such, and not even the passing of a couple of freight trains on the Union Pacific tracks close by could distract. But what nearly did was where the radio was cutting in on paleoconservative talkback prolefeed with bulletins announcing the imminence of a Major Winter Storm in these parts of the Lincoln Highway, with traffic likely to be disrupted; as well, announcements of early school closings was getting to be made.
"Uh, boys," the waitress chimed in, "seeing as where it's likely things could get chaotic with the storm they say is coming this way, and they're not advising much travel as well, I could put you up in the rooms upstairs for awhile. We're not exactly much of a hotel, but in its day it used to be a going thing in this regard." To which the wntire crew agreed to accept the offer of such Iowan hospitality under potentially distressing circumstances--even if all four had to get back into the bus to get their belongings and get their rooms assigned, not to mention the manager of the cafe getting out the space heaters and overstuffed quilts for the beds just to get things ready.
"Say, ma'am," Fleagle chimed in, "how much will this cost us in the end?"
"Call this an act of mercy and compassion," the waitress replied, "in the face of what we're about to face."
And before too long, the storm came along. And it was an almost sudden onset of blinding snow that could easily be discerned against the streetlight across the way from the cafe, flakes being driven by intense winds and, given the low-pressure sodium lighting in use, creatd a somewhat magical sort of glow upon things. As for entertaining themselves into the night, our crew couldn't help but go into a crazy pillow fight or two, working on a few possible new items for their show (whenever that was) and trying to get something on their portable shortwave radio besides consumptive-sounding "religious" and conspiracy theorists until tiredness set upon all at around ten that evening. Even if they had to essentially sleep on their bellies, all four managed to get some sleep in.
The next morning: Considering the general state of affairs caused by the storm, not much was going on to begin with, schools being cancelled and roads being worked on in the snow-and-ice-removal department. But in any event, the cafe's owner trated all four to breakfast of pancakes and sausage with rather potent coffee as well to keep things stimulated. Followed by Bingo pulling in some time shovelling out what passed for the town's main sidewalk ... and some talk about the idea of staging a modest little concert at the town's "opry house" as a "thank you" for taking them in, which came up further over lunch ... as well as a walkthrough of the "opry house" and a look at its amenities as the storm was winding down. Suffice it to say that the hardwood dance floor was enough to impress all four, not to mention its campy quonset-hut construction, making things a little more "homey."
And it took at least three days to get everything arranged, but even with such short notice, The Banana Splits' gig managed to get pulled off in an otherwise picayune one-horse Lincoln Highway town. And with admission essentially being what you could afford, such managed to translate into a modest crowd from area farms and farming communities as were otherwise facing the same predictably mind-dulling blandness of the vidiot's lamp of Diognes as things were clearing away from the late snowstorm. Which was quite an attraction, distraction even, the point of which was not lost on Fleagle in introducing themselves ("Looks like we have quite the crowd of otherwise bored and lifeless farmers, and farmer's daughters as well, here tonight!). And it would not be until well after one in the morning (allowing for a buffet supper at midnight) that things essentially wound down and concluded.
Once the concert was out of the way, the crew's sleeping in the next morning just to deal with all the excitement The Banana Splits put into such an impromptu show  was certainly much deserved. As would the breakfast of ham-and-cheese omlettes, hash browns, toast and coffee offered as another "thank you" gift before setting out on their way-ho-way down the Lincoln Highway ...
"You know something, Fleagle?" Drooper asked as the tour bus got back underway.
"What, Drooper?"
"That was certainly a show of hospitality they put on for us back in the last town!" To which Bingo added, "You bet your sweet pork tenderloin!"
In any case, this marks the 100th edition of Fanfic Friday here at It's So Hanna-Barberaesque. Your Correspondent would like to thank you for your generous and gracious support of this very blog, not to mention enjoying these Fanfic Friday missives featuring some of your favourite Hanna-Barbera characters down the years ... and, I hope, finding the time to recommend and share these stories to your friends in the interest of keeping Hanna-Barbera's Funsensically Funtastic World alive and viable to a new generation (and then some).

United We SONE – 8/16
From: https://seoulcomplex.com/united-we-sone-816/
For those of you who have been here for a while, you probably know me. Some of you may disagree with my how I conduct myself, but you know where my heart really is. You also know, whenever things are serious, whether you can or cannot believe what I write.
For those of you who are new, hello and welcome. Try to keep up with the rest of the pack because this patch of fandom is going to be a bumpy ride.
I’ve done a quick scan on twitter before writing this and I think most people have gotten the gist of my preliminary tweets, whether directly or via SONE hivemind. That’s encouraging since you’ll know where this post is headed.
I’m cobbling this together as quickly as I can because I genuinely wasn’t prepared for how quickly SM would start the mediaplay. In hindsight, that was stupid and I should have been prepared so I want to apologize for that and will try to keep on top of things again – real life work commitments have been making investing time into fandom a hard task. The funniest part is I was just DM’ing a friend in Singapore about the “one week promo” situation at the time… so really caught with my trousers down.
I'm booting up my computer now. Funny thing is I was just DM'ing someone about this just before the mediaplay article broke. pic.twitter.com/SQRLBKWxay

I will apologize in advance because the following text is not exhaustive account and summarizes/streamlines things. Details of deals that each member has or is negotiating won’t be talked about here: it’s a distraction. Please understand the position that I am in, like people used to understand back in the old days of fandom.
Here's to at least few more years of soshi. Glad everyome came to an agreement

SNSD were doing great in January 2014. “I Got a Boy” had gotten them more critical praise and attention, they’d won all the awards, they were sweeping through with album sales, merchandise… More importantly they’d proven that they could divide themselves up to find successes in multiple fields.
It’s SM’s fault for not making full use of SNSD but try telling them that.
  The events of this year
Fastforward to the end of 2016 and January, yes the all important month of January, of 2017: SM want to average out what they had wanted from the previous three years with what they will be getting in 2017 to 2020. They want SNSD members to take the lowest possible deal.
You can feel how much they respect each other’s positions. You can feel how much trust the intentions of every other member in the group.
The picture of a divided group that SM wants to paint is a lie.
SM want there to be confusion and in-fighting, because we all know how in-fighting ends: we flock to our main biases and start pointing fingers at individual fandoms of other members to blame.
This cannot be allowed to happen because that is clearly not going to help the girls in any way.
They know each other better than anyone, and we trusted them before. Trust the girls again now, in trusting the other members.
As much detail as I can share about “right now”
Do us all favor and keep hyping up Soshi They need you this month. Really. pic.twitter.com/8tCnv0Dbw7

The member(s) who are still fighting SM at the negotiation table have refused to give in, even when SM issued an ultimatum to decide by January 31st (or else). To be quite honest, things didn’t look good in December when preliminary talks were coming out of SM to draw up the new extension contracts. It became rapidly clear as January started that things were not going to be easy.
K-Pop is a business and if you’ll excuse the pun, you’re seeing the business end of it courtesy of SM Entertainment. This is brinksmanship at best and feels more like an inside job.
SM doesn’t always do this but when they do, things can get ugly.
This whole promo cycle. Being edited out of shows. Being excluded arbitrarily after those amazing teasers and a full week of epic promo. Drawing huge numbers to TV shows and album sales outpacing manufacturing speed.
As fans, I don’t think we should, however passively, rush the girls, or pressure them into making decisions. SM is trying to use SONEs as a weapon against SNSD and we cannot allow this.
Trust in SNSD to make the right moves and continue to love and support them without picking sides.

finished-Part-4 thoughts
so listen. I more or less cut my teeth in the BBC Sherlock fandom. there is literally no stone unturned where that group is concerned and I was/am(?) pretty into johnlock.
that said, I am accustomed to both a mountain range’s worth of evidence being available, but that same evidence also requiring a little bit of legwork to attain. in other words, I’m not lazy; not when it comes to seeing and supporting a relationship I’m into. (other stuff, all bets are off, but did you SEE my tumblr handle? yeah, we’re keeping it fairly singular here lol)
so. believe me when I say that when I WANT to see something, I know how to work for it. heck, I might even cheat a bit. unfortunately though, be it “rare pairs” or even some popular ships, if there isn’t SOMETHING letting me see it, I usually move. as I know I’ve stated before,
**these are MY opinions and only that**
so please don’t come for me like I’m telling you what you can/can’t do. fandom is big enough for everyone! if I can block/mute/filter whatever I personally don’t want to see, I intend to use those tools made available to me and let others go on their merry way!!
that being said, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don't see Josuke and Rohan as a pair. I am completely through Part 4 now and I really held out. yeah, that stuff leading up to and with Highway Star was pretty intense, but then the mirror shattered pretty quickly once Josuke healed him at the end, IMO. as a person who looks way too closely for these things (guilty as charged), the fact that Jotaro was there when he hadn't been up until that point really set up a mirror for HIM helping Kakyoin...only Josuke got yelled at and Jotaro's eyes went under the hat. yare yare indeed.
I'm definitely not the first person to draw this comparison, although the place I'd seen it before saw it somewhat differently. iirc, they said Jotaro mirrored his own mother there, like he "understood" the motivation behind why you'd help someone, but I almost saw the whole thing more as Araki making FUN of what happened in Part 3. so in other words, I see it as evidence AGAINST Josuke and Rohan, not necessarily FOR.
okay, well take the time old trope of enemies-to-lovers. sure there is plenty of animosity there, but even after the worst of it burns off, the most I get is a grudging, no I mean GRUDGING respect. they barely acknowledge each other after that, and while Rohan has to be stared down/growled at by Koichi just to come clean with Reimi before she DISAPPEARS FOREVER, it's only convenient to say that "he's never straightforward with how he feels".
BUT SPEAKING OF KOICHI, I don't exactly ship it, but I could probably convince myself sooner that Rohan has a bit of a crush on HIM. I mean you can sort of take some of the things that Yukako mentions as reasons SHE has for loving him, for the things she sees in him, etc. and find similar beliefs on Rohan's part.
but yeah, when I finish a story and start feeling out the fan works to help me continue enjoying the characters, it's definitely hard to ignore the most popular (and by this case I mean most readily available and abundant) ships. however, I'm quickly brought back to what I had said before about Jotaro and Kakyoin. ships don't just exist because of the canon evidence that is there to support them, and the ones with the most "evidence" aren't automatically the best or "more valid". I've been around long enough to know better than to think any of that. hell I wouldn't be writing any of this if seeing wayyy underneath or entertaining remote possibilities or larks wasn't something I could do or took interest in!!
I mean heck, for the most part I've been talking about characters who don't even have on-screen canon partners whose existence I have to sort of gloss over or whatever...these are gift-wrapped by comparison! LOL (otoh, Araki's penchant for killing my favs doesn't really help, but lucky for him I've got a crazy imagination and uh, quite a few audio notes saved on how I'd get around all that. so. 😏)
I won't patronise anyone (or myself lol) by saying "I don't need ships to enjoy something" even though it's probably 50(ish)% true. I simply know myself and that part of connecting with characters for me is to explore those sides of them that you don't really get to *without* putting them together with someone. that "someone" just tends to be a 同性 pair. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(as an aside, I've noticed a truly LARGE amount of chara/READER fic for this fandom? that's never really been my thing, but I'm curious as to why it seems so much more abundant in the jjba fan world.)
so I'll say a few (more) things now that I've wrapped on Part 4.
1) I loved it. I loved the pace, I loved the variety of characters, of situations, THE AESTHETIC. I get why the previous parts were they way they were for the most part, but I'd be LYING if I didn't say that the "slice of life" moments helped make this part my favourite yet!
2) that said, I think my burning need to write for Part 2 in particular, but also Part 3, has a lot to do with not getting those moments. but hey, fandom has always been the best for those sorts of things - I just love Part 4 for letting me kick back a bit...
3) late af, but I'm super into Josuke and Okuyasu. as friends, as more? WHATEVER!! give it all to me. ✨ also THANK YOU Araki for breaking your fucking Kill All The Best Friends curse! you'll probably clap back with Part 5, knowing you, but I'll take what I can get!!
4) did I mention just how much I love Josuke and Okuyasu's relationship?! yeah listen I can take it at face value and still be thrilled but idk man, this one is wide fucking open AND I LOVE IT.
5) ...I think Araki ships himself with Rohan too hard to let anyone else have him anyway. 😂

TMG speaks with Dominic Santana (Suge Knight)
Dominic L. Santana and Demetrius Shipp Jr. star in ALL EYEZ ON ME Photo: Quantrell Colbert
It’s another rainy day in Miami. One of several consecutive cloudy, dreary days when TMG speaks with Dominc Santana. The future, however, is bright for Dominic. The Fayetteville, N.C. born actor is about to burst onto the scene as the infamous Suge Knight in the Morgan Creek film “All Eyes On Me” detailing the life of the iconic Tupac Shakur.
Dominic started his career in small roles in films such a “Black Knight” with Martin Lawrence and TV hits like “Dawson’s Creek”. He’s also appeared in shows and films like “Whitaker Bay”, “Palmetto Pointe”, “Little Britain” and more.
We were eager to sit down with him and get a sense of the actor playing one of the most notable personalities in hip hop history:
Danai Gurira stars in ALL EYEZ ON ME Photo: Quantrell Colbert
TMG How is the excitement building for you in anticipation of the premiere?
DS Of course it’s very exciting. Not only for myself but for the current (and soon to be) fans of Tupac to get to see this. They’ve been eagerly waiting for so long to see this story being told. They were there since we started filming and continued to follow us. I can’t wait for them to see it and what we did and how this can add to Tupac’s legacy.
TMG  From what we understand, this role came to you somewhat by surprise. What happened?
DS  Well it actually came up through the usual channel via my agent, however, what I didn’t know was that he had gone ahead and submitted me for the role. I had no idea he had done it. He called me up one day and said “Hey they’re shooting a Tupac movie and I submitted you for the role of Suge Knight”. It surprised me because I never thought of playing a character like Suge before. I don’t know why. It never even crossed my mind. I was one of the fans waiting on a Tupac movie as well. And so it all kinda came together and I’m crazy happy about it.
TMG  That’s cool to hear. So let us ask you this..Suge Knight personified what it was like to be a business man and a bonafide gangsta at the same time. What kind of research did you personally do to prepare yourself to play one of the most notorious figures in music history?
DS  Walking into the role there were a few things I could immediately relate on. When you’re a big and tall man like I am people are initially intimidated so that’s one thing. Suge is an Aries I’m an Aries so our dispositions are the same. That aggessive side that aggressive nature comes through at times. I’ve been an business owner and entrepreneur I haven’t really worked for anybody since I was like 21 yrs old. Being the boss being your own man. I tapped into that experience definitely. Having people under you that you have to be in charge of. The rest of it I did a lot of research digging up old videos especially obscure and candid ones. Ones that would show certain looks and mannerisms. Seeing Tupac and Suge interact. All those nuances helped. The biggest thing was having people who really knew them and know Suge like the main producer LT Hutton. He was at Death Row and started there. He spent a lot of time around them both and he help guide my study and research. The Outlawz, Dazz and others.. Much in the same way. They all shared stories. All these amazing stories that nobody knows to this day and they would just share all this insight. Even down to the twitch’s that Suge makes in his shoulder because of nerve problems. I absorbed it all.

TMG If you had to say being on set and being part of the production process, What was the one key takeaway that you took away about Tupac that you didn’t know or realize before?
DS  As I said, being a big fan of his I’ve spent a lot of time reading his poetry and song lyrics, listening to his music. What I really was amazed at was how involved he was on the activism side. We all knew he had that side but I didn’t realize how deeply it resonated with him. Or how big a part of his life it really was. I mean starting from childhood ya know with his mother being an well known activist with the Black Panthers and step father and other family members. I really think that had things been different, and he didn’t go down the music road, he would have been an activist and/or community leader. Some kind of leader fighting for rights.
TMG  There’s a particular scene in the movie which we understand was an actual recreation of  Tupac’s historic House Of Blues perfomance. It’s been said that the atmosphere on set was as if Tupac himself was there in spirit. Were you on set that day and what can you share?
DS  Man that was one of my favorite days filming. I was scheduled to shoot all day but I didn’t have any actual lines that day. I was where they had built a VIP across from the stage in the crowd for the Death Row inner circle. All they needed from us were reaction shots to the party and the entire vibe of the place. We were there partying with girls and stuff. Hard work right.. LOL But I had the best seat in the house for this. It was a pivotal part of the film and Demetrius who plays Tupac was almost like possessed by him. This is when we all saw him in Tupac ‘the performer’ mode in his prime running around the stage. I had no idea how deep he put himself into it. He really did an amazing job. His every move was spot on. He was smashing it. That energy transferred to everyone there and so we really started to party like we were there. That day was just incredible.
TMG  Speaking of Demetrius we also understand this might be one of his first acting roles if not his first ever acting role. For someone like yourself who’ve acted before and now you’re in a film with the lead who comes onset with just raw talent, how did you adapt to that?
DS The great thing about all of this was that in order to find Tupac you were gonna have to find a diamond in the rough. Period. I’m sure there are great actors but to capture the essence of this character they had to go with raw talent. I heard Michael B. Jordan was being considered at one point and he’s a phenomenal actor but I’m sure the producers didn’t see that either. He signed on in 2011 so all things considered he’s been studying and training and taking acting lessons from Angela Gibbs (an incredible acting coach and actress) for years to prepare for this role. I heard he even did some Shakespeare as Tupac had also done during his school years. This was way before I even auditioned so its arguable he’s worked harder than most.
TMG  Tupac’s death is one of the most unfortunate occurrences in music history. What was it like to literally have a seat in the middle of the recreation of that fateful moment?
DS  To know about it for so long and to remember it happening  to go from that to sitting on the corner of Flamingo and Koval in 95 BMW next to someone who looks and dressed exactly as Tupac was unreal. You know what happens in that moment and it was rough actually. There were so many funny, intense and happy moments captured during the film and then to build up to and be there for this one, as fans, it was rough. Normally films are shot out of sequence but in this case this was actually the last scene shot and it was near the end of this amazing experience. It’s always emotional the last day of any shoot because you’re been working with these people day in and day out. And then for that to be the last scene. Creatively it gave that scene so much weight because it was truly the end of everything.
TMG  For us, Tupac’s story is timeless. Not only for his rich musical history but also because of the abuse of power coming from the police. Which is still happening to this day. These elements of power and corruption still resonate so any thoughts on that?
DS  It’s crazy because those elements are definitely still in play and we’re still dealing with them and we’re still seeing them in our society. We’re still having those discussions and seeing those situations. I tell people everyday.. You wanna be blown away listen to Tupac’s song ‘Changes’. You would think that he just released that song two weeks ago. You know what i mean. I mean that’s 20 years ago he was pointing out things to people. And these things are still not being addressed. I’ve experienced it in my own life multiple times.
TMG  We’re gonna put you on the spot. Favorite Tupac tracks and after making the film do they mean even more to you now.
DS  That’s tough to narrow to just two. I’ll go with ‘Me Against The World’ and ‘Changes’ which is one I always listen to. I’m very much in tuned with black and brown people and I always seem to get something from it. I’m a firm believer that entertainers, actors, etc. should use their notoriety to speak up on certain issues. I’ve had people try and hush me from speaking up. My mantra is I’d rather die on my feet and then live on my knees. Those tracks inspire me.
    TMG What’s next for you
DS Several more films that I can really speak about publicly yet. I’m also a screen writer so looking to expand into that area a bit more moving forward.
TMG We wish you and amazing opening weekend and looking forward to seeing more of you in the future.
DS Thanks.. I’ll be keeping up with The Man Guide too.
