basically, to put it simplest, BBC's John Watson is not anything like John Watson as a character. As a standalone character I think I wouldn't have cared nearly as much? I mean I still personally wouldn't like him cuz he was kind of a piece of shit at times but I can still find the appeal in that. no the main issue I face is that he just acts nothing like Watson and tbh like- a lot of his actions even go against Watson's ideals??

first of all his relationship with Holmes (im gonna be using their last names here because calling them by their first names feels wrong to me) is just- weirdly negative? I don't know, him constantly making Holmes out to be a total asshole and a villain in his life is SO out of character. (though to be honest it's warranted given how out of character Holmes is in that show too, he's a total asshole for no good reason)

I think honestly the best example of this change with Watson's personality and how drastic it is, is The Empty Hearse/The Empty House

in The Empty Hearse, John's immediate reaction is to PHYSICALLY HARM Sherlock

in The Empty House, Watson's immediate reaction is (and I'm not even kidding) to faint, be woken up, and be incredibly starstruck and just happy that his best friend is alive

Watson in the books is really intelligent and helps Holmes in numerous cases as well as gives his input (WHICH HOLMES TAKES TO HEART AND DOESNT JUST COMPLETELY IGNORE, BTW 🙄🙄 that always ticked me off with BBC) and does more than just get kidnapped a couple times and take notes.

ALSO ACD WATSON WOULD NEVER CHEAT ON HIS WIFE!!! OR BLAME HOLMES FOR MARY'S DEATH!!! NEVER!! would absolutely never happen. (though to be fair, ACD's equivalent of Mary's death happened in the 3 year gap between The Final Problem and The Empty House, so, yk)

LITERAL HELLWORLD. because italy would totally cheat on germany and germanys heart would have youtube poop glass shattering effect explosion and italy would be #unloyal and #mean #scumgong and he would break up with germany for being so clingy and upset about him breaking his heart everyday or germany would break up with italy because everyone in his entire life (2 people: japan and prussia) is telling him that he needs to because italys making him chew glass (they take like 6 years to convince him and have to resort to saying its for italys own good if he breaks up with him). and then when they break up germany would hashtag die and explode because he obviously still loves italy but hes held back by prussia to not come back to him and tries to satiate his autistic brain by thinking "he was mean to me and told me to leave. im sorry ill leave now sorry for bothering you" and he also doesnt feel close to anybody except italy and has to go "brother....... i am.... not feeling good right now........" and cant say much else bc WE SAW IN THE ANIME GERMANY WANTED TO VENT ABT ITALY AND REALIZED HE HAS NOBODY BC HE ONLY IS CLOSE ENOUGH IN THAT WAY TO ITALY. and then cut to italy and hes partying it up because hes pissed off at germany for being on his ass hardcore every single day for the past god knows how long (hate my wife syndrome) until a while later the partying slows down and he has a bunch of moments where he thinks "well usually right now germany would do [thing]" and that builds up until he is hit with the full realization that germany is not going to stay by his side anymore. because hes run away now and hes never ever coming back. and that realization is like the evil version of italy realizing that he loves germany and wants him to ALWAYS be by his side; so much so that hes willing to do what it takes and compromise and be loyal n shit to make that happen. and now italy is freaking out because he doesnt feel this urge ever and now hes already fumbled the dude hes fr in gays with. but this realization is evil because its under a sense of panic and shit so its also motivated by italy feeling a sense of entitlement to having germany by his side and like HES SUPPOSED TO BE HERE.

and from there italy would get back together with germany either easily bc he would just ask and say sorry and germany would go "well to be fair I should have been better as well. yes we should try again i want to too, i will try my best to not fail you this time." or it would be hard because germany would have his mind made up (with prussias support and urging and shit) to be like no italy we arent good for eachother and i cant (shouldnt) forgive you for doing those things to me and italy would be like Oh. and chew glass and freak the fuck out until he decides hes going to use #emotional manipulation and sob to everyone about how germany wont take him back and make everyone hate on germany and call him a terrible guy n shit to make germany feel so guilty and think hes an awful person to italy that he takes italy back. but even then their relationship is now fucked up forever because they live in perfect symbiosis thats their entire thing but now they dont because germany now has doubt of italy because of how he went into their relationship before and didnt give a fuck and italy unlocked his evil paranoia because now when he gets scared that germany will leave him he cant be comforted by thinking that would never happen because IT DID. zevlor always talks about "the others" and "his people" regarding the tieflings at the grove, but tends to leave himself out.

in early access in the camp celebration if you point it out he tells you he was going to plan the road ahead but relents and lets himself celebrate. he "celebrates" by still performing a duty: he uses magic to display a false scene of stars above you "for every life you saved" and said its what he used to do in Avernus for the tieflings because the sky is pitch black.

Looking at either Oath of Devotion or Vengeance for his potential Oath, both have interesting implications regarding how his oath could have been broken in Avernus, and/or why he acts so desperately heroic towards "his people"

Oath of Devotion follows:

Honesty. Don't lie or cheat. Let your word be your promise. Courage. Never fear to act, though caution is wise. Compassion. Aid others, protect the weak, and punish those who threaten them. For Devotion I can see Honesty being broken the easiest if we look at how quick he was to undermine Kagha. He seems almost "fae rules" honest the way he phrases things to try to get the player to help the tieflings. That could also very well be the "cheating" aspect of oathbreaking honesty.

For Vengeance I can see Any Means Necessary being his undoing, in that the exiled tieflings possibly meant so much more to him than his oath that it was broken.

Other oathbreaks I'd be just as intrigued by, however.

When he says hes done with soldiering, I want to hope/assume he means. retirement. but i think he just hasnt thought about anything but getting the tieflings to baldur's gate and doesnt care what happens to him, in a sort of depression haze where nothing (else) matters.

also, being a hellrider is for life, so the fact hes "done soldiering" despite that has weight to it, enough that even Tilses, another Hellrider, tries to tell him as much. he doesnt see himself as a hellrider and might very well intend to exile himself hermetically or die.

the forgotten realms wiki on hellriders says:

"Those determined to resign were given a final mission involving very difficult tasks, and even if they succeeded, and survived, they were stripped of their gear, exiled from the city, and named a heretic in the eyes of Helm, God of Guardians, for abandoning their post."

he's by himself off to a corner in the camp celebration, mourning the tieflings they lost on the way, and talks himself out of celebrating with them. he says he'll be "ruining" the celebration the next day.

going by what the Absolute twisted his desires into, he seems very concerned about "being a paladin again" with a god to guide him.

it sounds like he's aimless and feels purposeless, grasping at anything that will give him said purpose; im sure ge 100% cares about the tieflings' wellbeing, but i think he's also surrogating a purpose through getting them to baldur's gate. but without a Guide (gods, hellriders, a quest, etc), if/when he accomplishes this he could end up aimless again.

hes so casual with his self-loathing as if its Fact hes just a godless disappointment. His "lie that's kinder than the truth" line, if you tell him its his fault tieflings were taken prisoner he says "i imagine its worse than you realize," he hesitates when he asks to help you, and if you DO ask him to help you he says "he doesn't want to put a sword in your back. "only if you trust [his sword] wont be buried in your back"

She's honestly a way deeper character than people give her credit for, her arc is that of acceptance and being true to your heart despite what society thinks of you. Oh yeah and for the record she doesn't stand in the way of Lougosi because of her crush on Legoshi because I honestly think that she was more in love with the idea of being in a same species relationship than she was with Legoshi himself. I'm talking about the part where she falls for Louis and struggles with the knowledge that if she actually pursues him she's gonna be seen as a freak and never reach the social status she strives for. There's a lot to discuss with her character arc but NOOOO let's all just laugh at how she gets no bitches because Beastars fans see Juno as a joke. (I'm not mad I'm not mad it's fine it's fine)

shes cool but she doesnt have good chemistry with her canon love interest and therefore the fandom chalks her up to having no personality whatsoever. they see her as either an obstacle or a sex object basically

Certain People I Could Name insist on shipping her husband with the annoying twink doctor Julian Bashir because of the friendship they develop over the series. I maintain that O'Brien would never cheat on his wife, let alone with another man, and the response is often "they're in a polycule together!!!" which is even more out of character. Everyone please show my girl Keiko some more respect 😤

Wife of chief engineer Miles O'Brien, who is shipped with the chief medical officer, Julian Bashir. Show itself veered into misogyny regarding her and her marriage, manifesting as Miles constantly complaining about her and her encouraging him to go hang out with Julian and leave her and their daughter alone. Fandom responded to this by creating the "O'Brien polycule" including Keiko, Miles, Julian, and first officer Kira Nerys (who has another strange semi-romantic subplot with both O'Briens). Really, though, it just exists to have Julian/Miles without reckoning with Miles having to cheat to get there. I, too, was guilty of this in the past. Keiko had the potential to be a very interesting character (and started to be, early in the show) but it was never realized. She deserved better :(

keiko is a lovely lady and astrobotanist who had a whole romance with and married the more main character miles obrien but now frequently people sideline her to (semi-jokingly?) ship miles with his friend julian. she’s not the best written character and she deserved so much more from the narrative, but it still feels weird that the fan joke about her is always how much she is constantly encouraging her husband to cheat on her (which to be fair does happen a few times but not That much)

Kota and Eri like him and even help him when class A1 forced him back...cool. but it tells me smth...if Izu is not killed (its Hori if he can shit Izu, he will) will he be respected by others heroes or...single out again? 1. I've heard about this novel. Izuku's just Horikoshi's punching bad isn't he? It feels vastly OOC for the girls to say something like that. Admittedly, Izuku doesn't have many visible romantic qualities shown, but he doesn't have any negatives either. He's a fair bit younger than me so I won't comment on looks past him being a cutie pie, but I would think Kaminari would be the pick for bad boyfriend. He might not be as bad as Mineta, but he does condone and sometimes encourage Mineta's behavior. The Trainee ep 9 initial reaction

Well I enjoyed the few offgun scenes and I liked Pah finally having the accounting scene wrapped up. I’m not gonna talk about the Judy Bah-Mee scenes cause 😩 WHY DOES BAH MEE GET MORE SCREEN TIME THAN RYAN?! Okay okay let’s get to the photo review.

Can Jane look any less enthused to go to lunch with this man. Also it gave me the big feels when Jane suggested to go get lunch and looked at Ryan like he wasn’t afraid of who knew. 🥲 but I am not thrilled that Ryan hasn’t learned anything from the previous times he thought Jane liked someone. ESPECIALLY AFTER Jane tells Ryan that they’ll do dinner instead? But I guess Ryan is supposed to be baby so….. 18-20 year olds are stupid in a first relationship.

Well. I hated him APOLOGIZING TO THE GIRL WHO CONSTANTLY LOOKED DOWN ON HIM. He should fuck her ex boyfriend just for the thrill. Gah I hate the evil lesbian plot line. But I like Pah so watched his scenes. It wasn’t fair him having to apologize. If someone cheats or abuses or manipulate my friend they are dead and I don’t care what feelings they have. Bah Mee still is the secondary main character for some god forsaken reason. But what sympathy I’m supposed to feel for her is none.

That’s a real issue when you start working. I grew up in Mississippi which is a southern state that is very poor and loses in everything. So when I moved started my job I still struggle sometimes because I don’t have family money. I can’t change up my look. I can’t just go out to eat everyday or buy a new car. Feels like everyone can tell I’m a poor idiot. Of course that’s usually just in my head my work is still good. So I liked this conversation btw Pah and….. the president of the company.

I was very happy that Pah’s supervisors got slapped on the wrist for not teaching Pa. Whatever episode they introduced they introduced the invoices I went on a rant about how important this is. Also side note about Pah’s shoes… I’m pretty sure he’d have to wear closed toed shoes not because of the look but for safety. Can’t have an employee get injured on the job and he’s with the art department they paint and make stuff. He could get hurt. Just my workplace experience so grain of salt. We do have delivery and lab guys who dress super causal but closed toed shoes are actually important and enforced.

I think he has lied to Ryan? When he gets upset and anxious he says some lies like why doesn’t Ryan leave and Ryan doesn’t work hard. He definitely lied to him about things he needed Ryan to do when Jane was jealous of Ryan’s friend.

Awwwwwwww Off doesn’t like to hug people but if it’s Gun it’s okay 🥹💚💚💚 okay back to Jane and Ryan it was terribly cute when Jane asked Ryan if he looked like someone who had feels then when Ryan shook his head he stood up and hugged him. just gonna talk about my vessel guy, archive vessel, real quick cuz i never talked about him that much and i dont wanna bother my friends with my oc chatter

these are mostly disconnected thoughts vaguely strewn together that steered up cuz i listened to the man on the internet broken vessel theme with lyrics

anyway archive vessel's a really mild-mannered little guy, a little socially anxious and awkward cuz obviously, and kinda just hangs out despite everything, fucking around in the archives and keeping themselves occupied by reading whatever was left behind and trying to maintain the place once they found it

it kinda started to idealize the idea of family and friends through what they could read and they started to wish they could have that

be a big ol normal family with their siblings and parents

maybe they could have made friends too

be a kid

but they realize that, obviously, due to the nature of their conception and just

what they are

its not really possible

but that doesnt stop them from wanting that

i can imagine they hold a lot of resentment towards their father for abandoning so very many of its siblings to die in the abyss

theyd probably understand why

he had a kingdom to protect and he believed this was the only way

but that doesnt mean they would forgive what was done

they hate how they cant help but feel

cheated at life, yaknow

done in by something they couldnt change

and after its cursed conception, to simply be cast aside to rot among the corpses of its siblings...

their anger is painful to them, like something lashing out violently in a cage barely holding it in

it wants to lash out at those that hurt them, but obviously thats not possible

so it just

festers like that

mind you, they wouldn't take that out on their siblings

they were put into the same situation as it, so it isn't fair to them or itself

at most, they treat their siblings like the most precious scrolls in the archives

theyd also just

put in alot of their time to gather the bodies of their siblings that were able to escape the abyss but died anyway

make proper "graves" for it to just

grieve

even though they never knew them

they just wish they couldve found and helped them earlier, but at the least it finds peace in giving them proper resting places

i feel like their shade wouldn't have the same restrain they usually have with their anger and would probably violently attack anything that comes too close so uh

itd be a really big hassle to try n get them back in their shell if ever it got cracked open like an egg

theyd also act like this if they were ever able to meet pk after everything like in those aus

theyd still have some restraint cuz

be a dad to the archive vessel itd just be

very uncomfortable and awkward, cringing away from touch and, again, keeping things as brief as possible

which may hurt pk (if he cares cuz note my characterization of pk isnt fully done cooking so im not sure if he'd even be interested in doing any of this it might be more likely he never interacts with archive tbh) cuz with other people showing affection to archive, they eat that shit up but with pk itd just

generally, they dont wanna be around him for too long cuz then it'll need to actually feel the things they feel at full force and feeling things is kinda cringe to them

!! oh hell yeah! :D ill disclaim really quick that these are less of "fun facts" or "Worldbuilding Beats" and more of "i thought abt this character in this scenario a bit too hard and now theres a mini narrative." . meaning its a little long. ofcourse. So!! under the cut <33

ok just gonna get the bias one out of the way <33 in regards to the whole "not every ghost is nice" thing, Yahaba is actually one of the ghosts that remained hostile post-death. which wouldve been a problem for Team Foxmask to deal with-- but before much can happen, everything is interrupted by one (1) very distressed susamaru, going on and on about how theyre ignoring her theyre ignoring her they cheated and now theyre ignoring her, its not fair!! trying to calm her down and figure out what the hell shes trying to say is enough of a distraction for Team Kamado to step in. yahaba originally wouldnt have listened to a word anyone had to say to him, but hearing everything from an outside perspective (and listening through how they speak to susamaru) is enough to slowly de-escalate the situation. this serves both to double down on exemplifying the shoddy hand demons are often given, and also to give the Kamado Family a bit more characterization-- to give them more agency other than "fridged family that turns up sometimes." show off where tanjirou gets his values from! anyway those two stick around a little while, mostly just keeping to each other rather than anyone else. (theyre still poking fun of tanjiro in the background. and everyone else. i shrimply believe they should get to actually become friends. :] )

the pillars have. SO many ghosts. a lot of the time, they really dont want much of anything to do with him-- not usually because they dont like him, but because they have someone to watch out for. two exceptions are masachika and kanae. masachika so very badly wants to actually get to talk to this kid, but unfortunately: Sanemi is Sanemi. he rarely gets the chance to see tanjiro, and when he Does, things are kinda. stressful. because sanemi fucking hates this kid. masachika could easily give a good entryway to hinting at sanemi's softer side-- and also a way to up the escalation of the conflict in the pillar training arc. (sanemi would Not much like this kid suddenly talking about his friend that he Shouldnt Know About.) kanae, i feel, would actually like hanging out with nezuko more than with tanjiro! he might actually not figure it out for a good chunk of time, only catching on when he hears rumors about nezuko running about in the middle of the night, seemingly playing with someone who Isnt There. she would give some good character insight on shinobu-- maybe giving some extra depth to the conversation she and tan have on the roof.

muichiro. is going to be So Weird. yuichiro is likely ridiculously clingy-- constantly watching out for his twin, completely unheard. he... doesnt like tanjiro much at all when they meet for the first time. (though... that scene where mui and tan meet is a bit... complicated. its unsettling watching mui act like that, but yui's also inherently going to side with him on anything. do Not touch him.) they dont get to talk one on one (yui+tan) but it could very easily serve to both give more of an insight on mui's... Weirdness. and also to setup those hints that yui is just. he cares so much. this also gives very very fun opportunities for talk between mui and tan as tanjiro cant get a grasp on what exactly is going on with the ghost situation (its like a weird mirror..? its not the same, but...) and muichiro is just. completely oblivious. ("hey tokito-kun, have you ever died before?" "no, that's stupid. i'm real, and ghosts aren't." [the two continue saying more and more outlandish things to each other with complete sincerity as everyone around them try not to stare.])

honestly there's just a lot of good opportunities for interesting plotlines w/ this concept-- a ghost that helps tan unravel a demon-related mystery that everyone else had trouble finding a way to unravel. the ghost ends up being a family member or dear friend from the demon's previous life who was killed when they turned-- and they just want to be able to put their soul to rest and tell them they dont blame them for what happened, despite everything. ...or even the opposite-- a ghost who misleads any slayers from their turned friend in stark denial of what is going on-- causing a sort of double-antagonistic force that requires both tanjiro And the ghost squad to properly quell.

so like!!!! yknow!!!! waves hands around! its just a really fun way to get more subtle character details across without the characters themselves saying it-- especially for the less sociable ones. yknow. Get Haunted, Idiots(tm) <33

i like to think that? since coming to live with cicero, shark and yarrow gradually grow to adore him but its like. yarrow's adoration is healthy and i think his experience being treated as a tool or a weapon allows him to humanize cicero and see him more clearly, so he still has this sort of divine appreciation for him but also sees him as the person he is, which is loyal and fierce and protective, and deep down hes kind too.

SHARK ON THE OTHER HAND unhealthy adoration hes sort of obsessed and really does see cicero as some kind of blood god 💀

cicero is completely unaware at first, like okay these cannibals wanna live with me. sure human interaction is cool 👍👍 but he slowly like. HIS TIME with them he starts to get a big ego on the basis of how they treat him like hes something greater. not overtly, since he knows hes just a guy trying to survive, but he play into their fascination with him

i wont say his ego was big before? hes very conflicted. in this timeline he wouldve been on the island for about 9 months so hes. seen his fair share of blood and cruelty, dished out an even greater portion himself. he knows he can defend himself but he doesnt get overly cocky. he appreciates that the cannibals fear him, but it also wishes they wouldnt sometimes. its easy for him to lose his humanity when hes basically the same as the monsters he fights you feel me?

its a weird balance. shark idolizes him and makes him feel less like a monster and more like a deity, and yarrow humanizes him, makes him feel more like a man than a weapon

also ive said it before and ill say it again but the fact that shark has TWO big strong men ready to protect him at any costs is so. HE DOESNT DESERVE ITTT hes such a wet noodle of a man such a bastard. so unhelpful and squirrelly like. CONSTANTLY steals, and yet. like the fact that he was friends with yarrow to begin with is insane, and now he has the ex soldier murder machine at his side? its a life lesson always remember you can steal and cheat yr way through life and nature will reward you will strong sexy men to sleep with 👍
