The weird thing about being a writer, especially a writer focused on memior and essay, is that if you find a collection of your old stuff, you can basically shake hands with a version of yourself that you forgot existed.

They make strange word choices and reference jokes anchored in cultural context.

You have the same memories, but the details are different, and your understanding of them has changed.

Anxieties and conflicts that once were the main focus of your writing may no longer haunt you. Perhaps you've resolved those issues. Or maybe they've gotten worse.

People you once wrote about with affection have succumbed to new character analysis. Or an annoying character has disappeared since you wrote about them, and you cringe reading what you thought.

For me, the weirdest part is seeing my imposter syndrome tangled up in so many things I wrote. Now, looking back at these pieces written by a person who feels unfamiliar now, I think Wow, this is so good, why did I ever think I was bad at writing then? If only I could grasp the irony that I think everything I create now is inadequate too.

That and I found some typos.

I can see John Henry and Natasha Irons in a trade. Fuck you Chip.#it's why it takes such a special person to write a good ensemble story/a good Batfamily story. you have to be good at writing a LOT #of different characters. which I don't think most people are. I can write maybe 3 at a time confidently well.#and you also have to give all of them at least SOME love or else people will be upset that you aren't focusing on their fave #and also the writing as a whole will suffer. Chip Zdarsky is a pretty good Tim writer. #movies film cinema #zero day #ben coccio #I actually talked to the director on Facebook super nice guy and he told #me a lot about the filmmaking process and even helped me with tips on directing non-actors and new actors #I remember him telling me to always be supportive and tell your new actors they're doing a good job even if they aren't in the first take #cause you can instill confidence and still reshape and change their choices and mistakes later #Sometimes I'd message him for advice when I was running into problems on some of my early projects #he told me once ''did ya choose to collaborate with this actor cause you were lonely or you guys had passion and chemistry''#“collaborating is like a relationship” and he was so right #there's nothing worse than working with people you disdain cause there's no communication and no trust.#he told me how he wrote the first couple of drafts of Place Beyond the Pines but his take on the 3rd act wasn't clicking for the director #so he took the script and went and had another writer rewrite the 3rd act but he liked the process cause he learned a lot and still got pai #but I'd still like to see Ben Coccio's take on Place Beyond The Pines he says the 1st and 2nd act are mostly unchanged #Ryan Gosling's scenes are still mostly the same he said but he couldn't tell me too much cause of the NDA he signed #The bloopers of Zero Day are hilarious his tip he gave me about being supportive #“This is actually great but can we-” and Cal interrupts him “He says that no matter what if you're doing good or bad!” and everyone lols #I hope I can make it and ask him to collab with me on a script #He's such a nice dude compared to the harrowing film he made.#I wish there was BTS but he had only one tape to film on and this was made when digital camcorders were infants #I think he had only one 2 hour tape that's how low budget #The bloopers is just Cal or Andre secretly filming and Ben getting annoyed “Is it recording?” and Cal going “Nah..."#Cal is such a funny guy IRL I wanna see him act more cause he's so good. He was so great at playing a sadistic psychopath in this.#the final shooting is so harrowing and disturbing #I told Ben he srsly gut punched me/disturbed me and this is what made him really open up.

Ughhhhhhh I hate writing and I hate not writing and I hate myself

#nearly bought a digital typewriter today. actually i DID buy a digital typewriter today. officially yes i have bought a digital typewriter.#the money for the digital typewriter has left my account but i have emailed them to cancel the order because i can't in good faith buy #a digital typewriter when i don't fucking WRITE #i thought it might help me get back into it. distraction free and while allowing me to not judge my own writing #and be continuously editing while i write and going 'i'm crap i'm crap i'm crap no one will ever read this and if they do they will think #that i'm garbage and that i should feel bad etc etc etc'#but it's too expensive and i have the feeling i wouldn't even like or use the thing once i got it #because the IDEAS! the ideas aren't coming to me. or rather they are but none of them seem to stick #i feel underconfident in writing any of them #and then i have old projects that i've always wanted to get back to like the tennis romance thing but SO much has changed since i first #started drafting it. like i don't even know if i like the main couple anymore. i kind of want to put both of them with different OCs of min #but it'd switch up the WHOLE story if i had a different cast #in fact most of the problem lies in the fact that i have this long-running bedtime story i tell myself every night with lore #and a massive cast of characters that i switch out depending on who i'm most interested in right now and every so often i incorporate new #themes and ideas and motifs and plot points sometimes based on media i've been watching because it's MY bedtime story and it doesn't matter #if i plagiarise in my own brain. but then obviously i can't plagiarise in real life #and none of my bedtime stories are GOING anywhere. sometimes i only get through a scene or two before i fall asleep #all of which means my bedtime story is not so much a sweeping epic novel but a sitcom with way too many characters #most of which are werewolves to be honest and sometimes for my own wish fulfilment one of them will walk out of my head #and take care of my problems for me by lending me £1million or murdering my best friend's ex. in my mind obviously #so it's like. it's a case of getting in there and annexing off the stuff i think i can use #it's like yeah i've definitely written several romance novels in my head in the process of this but does it matter if they're IN my HEAD #to be honest i feel like my main strength is in creating characters. like i have this one family of werewolves i've been slowly but surely #adding members to since i was like 16. maybe younger? no yeah i think i made the first one when i was 12 #they're compelling to ME anyway. i care about them. it's just PLOTS. i can't plot #if a book could just be a lot of dialogue and sex scenes and silly moments and character studies i'd be alright #i also can't describe settings. don't ask me to because i can't #and now i'm just annoyed with myself because i sat down at my laptop to try to write and instead i'm here complaining about how i don't wri #and if i had the digital typewriter... i mean i'd probably still be doing this i'd just no longer have £300 #i don't have the £300 anyway. i hope to christ they refund my card i'm a fucking idiot

an update on my dual monitor set-up issues. I think the problem is my PC. I bought a DP to VGA cable and still it won't detect my second monitor. I also have a VGA to HDMI adapter, and that won't work either (I had originally assumed that the VGA cable I had was old and defective but now that I have the new DP to VGA cable I'm not so sure anymore). At this point, I've tried all troubleshooting things I could do, so it's probably time for me to get my PC looked at to make sure that's not the cause of all my problems, which I'm pretty sure it is.

#I think the vga port is bad??#i looked at it and it doesn't appear to have any abnormalities to me #I even opened the pc but I didn't find anything other than dust which I did semi clean a bit #if i have time i'll go take it to this repair guy and have him diagnose it for me. i need to take my laptop for repair too #it also wasn't detecting any of my monitors when I was testing the cables so...#which is honestly annoying bc my work laptop works fine with both monitors and had no issues #ugh. i just hope the repairs aren't expensive #ari talks

I went into the notes of the reading a book =/= reading a fanfic post and just got more cranky but i don't want to get snarkier than the tags i wrote on the actual poll....but...

Nowhere in there is the content of the book discussed in the definition, because it doesn't matter. That's what i mean about exclusionary vs inclusionary definitions of things. There's no way of defining Art that includes 'normal' art while excluding 'weird' art that won't also exclude things often considered 'normal' art. Same with music, with writing, with anything creative humans do- the only way to define it is, ultimately, because you say it is. It's art because it is. It's a book because someone wrote it. You can't argue that books go through an editor and get published because otherwise you have to start picking around the self-published or indie publishers, and what happens if someone writes, does their own editing, self publishes four novels, then does well enough that their next three books are traditionally published? Have they only written three books? Of course not.

You can't even really use content to define what makes a book a book, because how do you define a book that includes nonfiction and biography or autobiographies and fiction and anthologies of short stories or poetry book collections that also excludes fanfiction? 'Is an entirely new story with worldbuilding and characters' will lose you ulysses and the aeneid and neil gaiman's norse mythology and basically every king arthur and the round table story ever written. 'Is over x word count' no, now we're arguing about novel vs novella vs short story collection vs deserialized serial novel vs osv osv osv and that's a side argument that can really only happen if you remove content from the equation- and then you have nothing separating fanfic from nonfic from fic, so why even ask the question in the first place? Is an audiobook a book? A braille book a book? An ebook a book? A comic book a book? Why are we asking?

This is a different use of book but here:

Humans are humans because we are. Art is art because it is. Reading is reading because it is.
