I always like to write a little 'that is' after I use complicated words
'the [esoteric term] of yadda yadda yadda, that is, the [short explanation], is etc'
saying i.e. also works, or putting it in em dashes ― like this ― helps if it's a longer explanation.
I think I got this habit from writing cioè ― i.e. that is ― in Italian all the time and now it's stuck.
Even if I don't use a complicated word, I still like to do little simplified rephrasings of myself. Or after a quote I'll just rephrase what they meant, especially if they were complicated.
I like to say that the most important thing a piece of writing (not literary writing, like poetry or novels, I mean like essays and theses and reports) is to be clear. But I also think succinct and elegant/complex words can be useful. It's a balance. And, I mean, research articles are really written for researchers. You're not going to explain concepts you learn in undergrad chemistry (unless you are defining them precisely to question fundamental understandings of the idea or discuss how it has developed or something) because otherwise it'll be a slog for a veteran chemistry researcher to read.
There are people who report on scientific work, and scientists should learn how to talk to the public about their research, and in those cases they should use simple language or simplifications (or analogies I love analogies) but not when reporting their results for other researchers in their field.
The whole “scientists use big words on purpose to be exclusive” is such a bunch of anti-intellectual bullshit. Specific and concise language exists for a reason; you need the right words to convey the right meaning, and explaining stuff right is a hugely important part of science. Cultures that live around loads of snow have loads of words to describe different types of snow; cultures that live in deserts have loads of words to describe different types of sand. Complex language is needed for complex meaning.

PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND:
we, as fans, do not have a right to private information. anything shared with us on this is a privilege. please do not abuse it. the cc's could shut down and never talk about it if we overwhelm them.
also, please keep in mind that ONE HERMIT and THE ENTIRETY OF HERMITCRAFT are NOT THE SAME THING. the entire fandom is not 'ruined' or 'completely unsafe' because of the actions of one person.
PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE OTHER HERMITS KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT WHATEVER'S GOING ON WITH ISKALL. this is not some big conspiracy, it's the consequences of one person's actions. they weren't hiding this from us, that's not how hermitcraft works, they truly didn't know. they probably knew as much as us about this, so making it an 'us against them' situation is immature and shortsighted.
ALSO, I AM BEGGING EVERYONE TO PLEASE NOT SENSATIONALIZE THIS. PLEASE DO NOT TURN HATING ISKALL INTO A MEME OR A JOKE.
mcyt'ers being revealed to be less-than-great people is not a rare thing, sadly, but i've seen it turned into a joke/meme/trend in other fandoms. this both minimalizes the actual people's/victims' struggles, makes the entire situation feel less serious than it is, especially to outsiders looking in, and makes everyone in the fandom look immature, petty, unable to take anything seriously, and genuinely harmful.
this server, fandom, and community are not dying, it is not ruined forever, this is one (major, i'm not trying to minimalize it) issue that we're currently dealing with. it will be okay. we will move on. this is not the beginning of the end. please calm down. i love this fandom, god bless all of you. <3
edit: doc has said on stream that we will likely get more information as time passes. like i said, this is a PRIVILEGE. we are not OWED information. please be grateful for what we're given, and POLITELY ask questions if you must. if a cc doesn't give you the answer you want, or doesn't answer at all, LEAVE THEM ALONE. THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO HARASS PEOPLE. the hermits are likely just as stressed out as us, if not probably more so, so please keep that in mind when contacting them.
don't freak out, we'll be okay, this is not the end of the world, nor is it the end of Hermitcraft. we will be okay.
second edit: please remember that (at least as far as we know) ISKALL AND STRESS WERE NOT KICKED OR BANNED. THEY LEFT OF THEIR OWN VOLITION.
ALSO!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!
WE. DO. NOT. KNOW. EXACTLY. WHAT. HAPPENED.
PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING SIMPLY BASED OFF OF OTHER MCYT'ERS PAST ACTIONS/SCANDALS. WE DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. WE MIGHT NOT EVER KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. WE NEED TO BE OKAY WITH THAT AND NOT DRAW OUR OWN CONCLUSIONS.

We’ve been over this before
Folks, please pay attention to this.
Do not send me (in my inbox, or via message, or anywhere else) suggestions for things you’d like me to write. No matter how vague and nonspecific you think they are. By doing so, you are guaranteeing that they will never happen.
Such suggestions, even in the inbox, leave an electronic “paper trail” that the platform is required to preserve. People bent on making legal trouble for a writer can subpoena a platform for such data as proof that you got your idea from somebody else (like them) even if you genuinely previously came up with it by yourself.
“Oh, come on, who’d do a thing like that, what are the odds…?” people will say. But it’s not generally known that I’ve already been involved in a high-stakes lawsuit in which someone tried to sue Mattel over material I wrote when developing the initial form of the “Barbie: Fairytopia” universe (and the first Fairytopia film) for them. I’d never so much as met or communicated with the person suing them, had never read even a word of their work… but they still went to great trouble and expense attempting to prove that I’d had access to their material and used it without permission.
Mattel won the suit—as I’d frankly been expecting: the attorney handling their defense was one of the most expert IP lawyers in the US. But it gave me the chills… and made it clear how very wrong things could go, and the kind of damage that could be done to my career and my personal life, if I even accidentally used ideas from unauthorized sources.
Seriously, folks. I know you mean well! But please don’t make me tap the sign.
I already have a list of things that can never happen. It’s already too damn long. Don’t make it longer.
DO NOT SEND ME STORY IDEAS (or “prompts” or anything of the kind) no matter how general or conjectural or unformed they may seem to you. To do so is to guarantee that they will never, ever happen.
And in my own universes, your innocently-meant suggestion could mean that neither you or anyone else will ever see that particular Young Wizards or Middle Kingdoms plot, no matter how much you’d like to… because I take this stuff seriously.
Okay?
Thanks.

Yeah it depends on what is meant by work. I wouldn't go work 40h/week at some company, no. But I would likely pick up making stuff and selling it. I love making things, but I don't have the money for material, equipment, etc. Making rugs looks super fun! Or making sweaters with a knitting machine. I'd probably also finally start writing a book. Or maybe start streaming for real!
I just wouldn't work for someone else's gain, to make some shareholders some more millions under threat of poverty
I'd do what I love to do. And most importantly, when I want to. I have ADHD. This thing bores me? Put it aside and get the next thing going. Without worrying about having to make rent
That'd be neat
If we had universal basic income, would you still work?

I think my favorite thing from the sex scene is just how goofy and fun it is. like don't get me wrong, it was hot, but it was allowed to be silly because sex should be fun. I know a lot of people wanted to see them fuck nasty, but I like them having a sweet silly time while making each other cum their brains out.
like it's soft, but you can see how much they enjoy it, how much they care about each other. How they both giggle at Vi fumbling with Caitlyn's belt or how Vi's eyes look after Caitlyn takes off her shirt and shows Vi the Kirraman estates. Caitlyn being honest with vi about what she did with Maddie in the last few months because communication is important, and Vi doesn't think it's important compared to what she feels for Cait right then and there.
It's not as majestic as the Mel Jayce sex scene in the first season, it's not as rough or dirty as some people wanted, but it just fits them in my opinion. that they're literally bare to the world, no commander or pit fighter, just two women in love. It's not perfect and titillating like unrealistic porn scenes, it feels just real and it fits the two of them.

The hermit community is pretty old so I probably don’t have to say this, but I know a lot of people in the fandom are young; but here’s a few tips from an old school yog fan
1. just because someone has left or did a bad thing, doesn’t mean you’re a bad person for enjoying the content, along with still wanting to watch that old content they did or were a part of
2. Just because someone has left or did a bad thing does not mean you cannot continue to make fan content. While it’s understandable if you don’t make more or remove art you have made, you are also not bad if you don’t. YouTube is all about collaboration and transformation. Fanart? Fanfic? Cosplay? That’s all transformative, you don’t have to stop making a new thing from the old thing. It’s fully in your right to do so, but it’s not required.
3. Do not harass people about whether they do or don’t make art or delete art, it’s transformative works and personal choice, the most you should do is ask for it to be tagged so it can be filtered.
4. Don’t harass the creators either, it’s clearly been handled and handled well. If this was a case of it being ignored for years by the company or group (COUGH SJIN YOGSCAST COUGH) then it would be more complicated, but it’s a solved issue. Don’t harass iskall or stress either
5. You are allowed to hold off on making a value judgment until you have more information. We don’t have a lot of information and things around kids media tend to be a lot more stricter then adults for what’s appropriate. so it could be a lot of different things of highly varying morality ranging from assault to a bad case of public intoxication that didn’t fit the child friendly brand of the Hermits. We don’t know. Especially about Stress her resignation and how it relates is a near total mystery right now.
6. Be kind to each other, and remember the people you watch are people, and people do dumb or fucked shit sometimes, it sucks, but these are just people, hopefully it’s something to be grown from by Iskall and not something life ruining, but let this remind everyone to not put people on pedestals as unproblematic. Every hermit has probably held an opinion or been a part of something you’d find distasteful, that’s just what it means to be human. It’s up to you to decide where your personal line is and your comfort levels on that stuff, and no one can make that choice for you.

In light of recent events with iskall85 (+stressmonster?) i’d like to take a moment to thank around 98% of the community. I know its rough, and some people are upset or curious, but the community is handling it wonderfully right now, and I’m extremely proud of everyone who is taking a step back and not harassing creators. Heres a list of things we, as a community, can do to help!
1. Please don’t harass any of the Ccs! By that, I mean Hermitcraft AND vault hunters. I know that you’ve heard it a billion times by now, but I do want to emphasise that they have said they cant say much now, and they’re probably taking it more rough than we are. We aren’t owed any information, even if we would like it, so harassing people will only make the situation worse.
2. Comfort your friends with iskall or stress introjects, irls, fictionkins, alters, etc. reminder that none of this is their fault, and they should NOT be harassed for living their lives as they are.
3. Keep speculation private, or to a minimum. Its human nature of course, to be curious, but discussing it in publicly is a BAD idea. Keep it to the dms, or if you’re going to speculate in your blogs, I recommend not maintaining iskall, and putting the discourse tag in so that people can filter it out.
4. Keep your fanarts and fanfictions up until the situation is clearer, or if you don’t want them up, send them to @pearleisuma to be archived. Just because someone did something does NOT mean that you need to delete anything you worked hard on, it just means be wary making things in the future, involving them, about it, until we get more information.
4. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, Watch ANY commentary youtube channel videos about the situation. This is how false information spreads, and youtubers are going to look to make a quick buck off of anything they can use to blow up. Please only get your information from trusted sources, such as CC’s twitter pages, any videos released by Ccs/streams, or if iskall or stress make a statement themselves.
5. Dont jump to conclusions! Luckily, mumbo has tweeted out that the situation has nothing to do with minors. Jumping to conclusions will lead to misinformation, so do sit back and wait a bit before any assumptions or conclusions.
6. Take care of yourself. Its okay to be sad about them leaving, its okay to be sad that Iskall apparently did something, and its okay to be curious as to what it is about. As a fandom, try to lift eachother up and comfort eachother, rather than bring eachother down about the situation.
Keep being awesome hermitblr, and stay strong 🫶 we’ll get through this

shinigami eyes is inaccurate sometimes. that doesn't mean it's evil.
I've seen more people talking about the shinigami eyes extension lately, specifically because it seems like some "trans inclusive" radfems have been using it to incorrectly mark anyone who disagrees with their hateful rhetoric as "anti-trans".
the conclusion I see people drawing is that shinigami eyes is full of transandrophobic, exorsexist/enbyphobic, intersexist radfems using their moderation powers for evil.
that's now how this works!
shinigami eyes is crowdsourced. everyone who uses the extension can mark anyone and anything as "anti-trans" (red) or "trans-friendly" (green), or "clear" any current markings they might have.
that input is taken into account when determining how said blog/website/account/whatever shows up to everyone else using shinigami eyes, but you will see things marked the way you mark them immediately.
Tumblr media
shinigami eyes claims to have some level of human validation involved when they determine public changes to how things are marked, but it's not clear what that looks like. looking through their (fairly inactive) github community page, I stumbled on this person asking about what to do if they've been incorrectly marked "anti-trans":
Tumblr media
which confirms my understanding of how shinigami eyes tends to work.
basically, shinigami eyes isn't actually told why anyone marks anyone else as "safe" or "unsafe". even if/when there is "human validation", they're most likely just making their best guesses based on the information available to them: a cursory glance over the blog/account/website that was marked, and how other people have marked the same thing.
if someone's blog is incorrectly marked red, it's probably because one or more people completely unrelated to shinigami eyes moderation submitted that marking. if there was nothing near the top of that person's blog to indicate that person was vocally supportive of trans people (and not just trans themselves) if/when it was checked by a human, they likely just went with what seemed to be the safest bet.
which means if people are abusing this extension to mark folks as "anti-trans" when they're not, we can take action to fix that!
If someone is marked red/"anti-trans" when they shouldn't be, mark them "trans-friendly" yourself. then tell someone else who uses the extension to do the same. it'll update the public marking eventually.
if you are marked red/"anti-trans" when you shouldn't be, and you want to reverse that & prevent it from happening again, it might be a good idea to put something explicit in your bio- like "trans rights are human rights"- so it's front & center if and when a human at shinigami eyes checks a marking someone submitted.
there's another conversation to be had about how much people should be relying on shinigami eyes in the first place, but it's not evil. it doesn't hate you. it's not even exclusionary, historically speaking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the one thing I will say is that there is definitely some very valid contention around this specific stance they currently hold:
Tumblr media
I understand why they might want to avoid wading too deep into questions about what "counts" as a transphobic slur vs. what does not when it comes to intra-community issues, as a pretty public-facing tool for the trans community broadly speaking. but like, "theyfab" is a pretty explicitly exorsexist term, imo.
still, I think this should probably just be taken to their github issues board, where folks can have more of a conversation than the reviews page allows for. trying to pressure them into compliance isn't going to cut it, and our community deserves better than that anyway.

I am going to tell you something you've probably heard before from the perspective of someone who was drawn into those very hate groups as a young man, but who soon realized it was just BS too. It is easy to draw young men into this mindset. Our current culture sees young men as violent, ignorant, stupid, lazy, etc., etc., etc. There is a disconnect between what we as young boys are taught or see from television or other sometimes misguided men, and what is often perceived as acceptable by society at large. For instance, young boys are often punished for trivial things, taught that we have to show no emotions (except anger), and that women will naturally be drawn to us simply because we are men (even when we aren't, yet).
This point in life, almost always in our teen years, we are easily brought into a society that seems to welcome us and says repeatedly that they understand our anger and frustration with society. It was easy for these sorts of groups to get me when I was a child because I had no father figures who spent any time with me. These groups, whether they be racist, fascist, militias, or any other type of hate group draw young men in simply by accepting them and telling them they are good. They say their instincts are right and that society is wrong because it caters too much to (name the poison that the child has or the group wants to put on the outside).
For young men, like me at the time, who have very little "caring" or "supportive" contact, this outreach is very attractive. It isn't hard to see how a group of "men" supporting your beliefs is seen as right where society seems to have a massive taboo against teen boys. Since young people's minds are often easier to manipulate, that simple act of drawing someone in by "accepting" them is all that is needed to start them on the road to full bigotry and hatred.
This is a simple paraphrased version of what happens, but it happens everyday. There are ways around it and ways to keep your boys from falling victim to it. But, honestly, some work needs to be done in our society as well. Young people, both boys and girls, are often demonized for different reasons as society tries to put them into a mold it likes. The thing is, to help keep young men out of this very deadly trap that is set for them, you have to have some lines of communication, whether that be parental or authoritative, where truth and support can flow. I am not saying coddle all boys to make them feel better, but it really does boil down to how teen boys feel in society and in life. If they feel unvalued, they will seek it out, just like anyone else. If there is a group out there with bad intentions, but it seems welcoming and supportive, then it is just like any other cult that grabs you.

what even is considered a better singer though? i think that’s one of the things people forget, too. i find that artists all just have different styles catering to people with different tastes. but objectively, do you mean that mc is better in terms of technicalities (breathing technique, head voice, all that) which is why they’re “superior”? every character says mc is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I’ve always thought they just had a very majestic voice.
yes you're very right! vocal color makes it subjective and i like to think seven has a great vocal tone especially for the genre that they're in and they're very good at emoting but MC also has a great vocal tone and is emotive COMPOUNDED with better technique (better breath control, more flexibility, dictation, and range) makes MC the better technical singer
when it comes to vocal color its subjective, some singers can be amazing but have a vocal tone thats not very pleasant to the ears but MC simply has better technique.
every character says mc is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I’ve always thought they just had a very majestic voice
this part is kinda funny cuz half of the people in the community think every character hates mc and thinks mc sucks while the other half thinks this so lscmsjcsjjs

a group chat I’m in with people I was at uni with came back to life today. I love these people but also my first serious ex is in there. they put some photos from their wedding which was recently.
my first thought was “aw that’s nice, I’m happy for them” and that is true. but then my second thought was what the fuck am I doing with my life?
then there were congratulations thrown around for a couple in the chat that had had a child this year, and then another couple and people start catching up on all their Big Life Moments from recently. and lemme tell you, being a single man in your thirties who has just gone through a really weird break up situation and is generally feeling like an a lovable sack of shit who will never feel or feel worthy to feel the kind of love he wants in this climate really gets The Thoughts goin’
I guess my point is I’m not doing so well folks and therapy can’t come quick enough this week

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
#yeehaw#1k#5k#10k#posts that got cursed. blasted. im making these tag updates after... 19 hours?#also i have been told it should say speech loss bc nonverbal specifically refers to the permanent state. did not know that!#unfortunately i fear it is so far past containment that even if i edited it now it would do very little. but noted for future reference#edit 2: nvm enough ppl have come to rb it from me directly that i changed the wording a bit. hopefully this makes sense#also. in case anyone is curious. though i doubt anyone who is commenting these things will check the original tags#1) my friend did not do this on purpose in any way. it was not intended to distract me or to hit on me. im a lesbian hes a gay man. cmon now#he felt very bad about it afterwards. i thought it was hilarious but it was very embarrassed and apologetic#2) “why didn't he use 🫵🏼?” didn't exist yet. “why didn't he use 🆗?” dunno! we'd been using a lot of hand emojis. 👌🏼 is an ok sign#like it makes sense. it was just a silly mixup. also No i did not invent 👉🏼👌🏼 as a gesture meaning sex. do you live under a rock#3) nonspeaking episodes are a recurring thing in my life and have been since i was born. this is not a quirky one-time thing#it is a pervasive issue that is very frustrating to both myself and the people i am trying to communicate with. in which trying to speak is#extremely distressing and causes very genuine anguish. this post is not me making light of it it's just a funny thing that happened once#it's no different than if i post about a funny thing that happened in conjunction w a physical disability. it's just me talking abt my life#i don't mind character tags tho. those can be entertaining. i don't know what any of you are talking about#Except the ppl who have said this is pego/ryu or wang/xian. those people i understand and respect#if you use it as a writing prompt that's fine but send it to me. i want to see it#aaaand i think that's it. everyday im tempted to turn off rbs on it. it hasn't even been a week

having good & true friends will literally save and protect you in a million unfathomable ways. like okay we have written so many times about lovers. but the way a platonic friend laughs and cries with you. the way they hold your hand at 14 years old and at 34. the way they keep a little silver tie to you, touching base over and over and over. how you can go years without talking, only to re-meet and discover: oh shit! you're still cool!
there are people who have been in my life for more than half of it, and i have loved every version of them. do you know how fucking beautiful that is. yeah love will save the world. but the way friends love you is gonna save the you.

You don't wish your disability was worse or more visible, you wish your disability was taken seriously. Please stop confusing the two, I guarantee you would not get the support you need JUST by being more severe or more visible. Please listen to visibly disabled people when we tell you it isn't better on our side
#m/cc#mine#I tried extremely hard to word this nicely because I KNOW people don't mean bad and often even know there are unique challenges#and believe me I know the challenges of invisible disability too!!#I have invisible disabilities!#but as someone who has also been at least visibly 'off' since they were 10 I am SO SICK of invisible disabilities being hailed as like#a unique extra oppression that us lucky visibly disabled people don't have to deal with#there are challenges to invisible disabilities that visibly disabled people DON'T have to deal with!#but you need to understand that *the reverse is also true*#there are MASSIVE benefits to being able to lie about your disability for example#or not dealing with the overt ableism that comes with your disability being obvious to everyone#*I do not have the option to pretend I'm not disabled.* that is never an option I have#I walk weirdly. I use a mobility aid now. my speech and face are 'off.' I lean to one side#for a long time I wore sunglasses 24/7 and often didn't make sense. I sometimes can't speak or won't react to others#for the most part people will always know that at the very least something is wrong with me#and more obviously I have people telling me they'll pray for me; telling me I can't do things I'm already in the process of doing;#wanting to shake my hand to tell me I'm an inspiration for not killing myself; giving me dirty looks for existing in public#and yes. I'm aware that this is very much an in-community issue. I know the average abled person doesn't know invisible disabilities exist#that's why there's so much awareness happening for it#but as a visibly disabled person I get SO TIRED of constantly hearing 'I wish my disability was visible :'('#it's just 'I wish I had your disability!' but from other disabled people

I see a lot of people in the aroace community on here talk about how we should have a pride gradient aroace tag, but I rarely see people bring up the possibility of other aspec pride gradient tags for identities of similar levels of specificity to aroace, like alloaro or alloace. As much as I would love to have an aroace colored tag, I think we’re setting our sights too low here.
