#I have a lot of problems with the Kenobi series but Obi-Wan's character was not one of them

My Star Wars hot take is I'm honestly a really big fan of the characterization of Obi-Wan in the Kenobi series. This isn't a joke, let me explain.
In Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan blames himself for everything that Anakin's fall to the dark side triggers. He was Anakin's teacher, his mentor, his brother; it was his responsibility to raise Anakin, to teach him the ways of the Force and keep him from the dark side. And now, with Anakin finally having given himself to Sidious's command, Obi-Wan is now (in his mind) responsible for the destruction of the entire Jedi Order, the fall of the Republic, and the rise of the Empire. But more than anything, he feels responsible for failing PadmƩ; he couldnt protect Anakin, and in doing so failed to protect her from his fall, both mentally and physically. All he has left by the end of the film is the child of the two people he loved most in the galaxy, whom he's sworn to protect despite being unable to protect either of Luke's parents. So with his entire world shattered, and with no one but himself to blame... is it any wonder that Obi-Wan becomes this shell of himself?
He has ten entire years to reflect on every single thing he did wrong by Anakin. Every single stern word, every overly-impatient criticism. They all haunt him, every single one. What could he have done differently to have saved his best friend from himself? By the start of the series, Obi-Wan is this broken man, wracked with guilt and unable to look himself in the eyes. It doesn't help that he knows there may come a day where he has to protect Luke Skywalker from his father, and Obi-Wan simply doesn't know if he has the strength to look Vader in the eyes. The entire show exists in service of the final moment where Obi-Wan comes to terms with the fact that he didn't fail Anakin; Anakin chose this path. It's heart-rending, but it finally frees Kenobi of the guilt he's felt for Vader's rise. And with that freedom, he can finally accept that protecting Luke from going down his father's path is simply the only option he has left. He couldn't save Vader's soul, but he just might be able to save Luke's. And that's worth fighting for.
#star wars#obi wan kenobi#anakin skywalker#darth vader#luke skywalker#kenobi series#I have a lot of problems with the Kenobi series but Obi-Wan's character was not one of them#Bringing back Hayden and Ewan to finally give them closure for RotS was amazing#Every time the show focused on Obi-Wan and Vader it was amazing#I just wish the entire series had been as good as that

What's 'Star Wars' about?
A while ago I got an 'Ask' that concluded with "what is Star Wars about, if not the Jedi, right?" And weirdly enough... I have to disagree.
I mean... to me? Yes. Star Wars is about the Jedi. A Jedi-less, Sith-less, lightsaber-less Star Wars movie or series will struggle to get me on board (which is why I was surprised that I loved Andor so much).
But if you read everything George Lucas said, if you think about the Jedi's place in his two trilogies... they're not front and center, right?
Sure, there's Luke Skywalker... but he's a learner, in the Original Trilogy. Same goes for Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, in the Prequels. They're going through character arcs.
Otherwise, the Jedi are either used as mentors to the protagonist...
... or to deliver exposition...
... but they're mostly vectors Lucas uses to present his thesis.
Functionally-speaking, the Jedi are important in that they embody the Buddhist philosophies the movie's themes are based on.
But when it comes to the plot, they're secondary. That's because the the themes of these films are bigger than the Jedi themselves.
So the question becomes... what's are the themes?
The primary goal of the Star Wars films is to inspire kids to start thinking outside the box and teach them a set of values and psychological motifs that have been passed down through mythology and fairy tales.
These values can be summed up in the dichotomy between greed and compassion / selfishness and selflessness / pleasure and joy.
We all have both aspects and need to strike a balance between the two. After all, being greedy ultimately comes from fear and being afraid can happen to all of us. Problem is, unchecked fear can lead to anger, hate and a whole lot of suffering.
The more selfish you are, the more you want things and the more you're afraid that you'll lose everything you have, you'll get angry when someone tries to take it and that will hurt everyone around you.
In other words, fear is the path to the tempting/addictive Dark Side.
Thus, seeing as we'll be inevitably tempted by the Dark Side and give in at some point (because nobody's perfect), we should aim to be as selfless and compassionate as possible for our own good... but also for the greater good, because we're all connected to a life energy. You can call it Qi or God; in Star Wars it's known as the Force.
As such, we all form a symbiotic circle and working with that in mind is better than putting ourselves first and draining from everything and everyone around us.
But we also need to be careful because there will be people who give in to that selfish side and will try to control everything. When the time comes, we must stand up for what's right.
So that's Lucas' thesis.
If I had to sum them up, the six movies illustrate it as follows:
The Prequel Trilogy is about the consequences of greed, explored through Anakin on a smaller scale and the Senate on a larger one.
The Original Trilogy shows the triumph of compassion, through Luke, Leia & Han and the Rebellion's fight against the Empire.
Lucas talked about it multiple times, the Prequels are about how Anakin becomes Darth Vader and how the Republic becomes the Empire, and in both those cases, it happens because they're greedy.
The Senate is greedy in the more classical sense. They could give a shit about "symbiosis", no they're taking bribes, letting corporations dictate policy, using loopholes to keep themselves in power and halting any meaningful progress out of fear that the new status quo will conflict with their own self-serving goals.
Anakin's greed manifests in a different way. He turns to the Dark Side because of his attachment. He wants to stop PadmƩ from dying... but not because he wants to save her, rather he wants to save himself from feeling the pain of loss again and will do anything to not have to live without her, her own wishes and the natural cycle of life and death be damned.
In both cases, they cave under pressure orchestrated by Palpatine, but nobody puts a gun to their head. They make a deliberate choice that comes from a selfish place, and neither one takes personal responsibility for it, they blame others, the Separatists in the case of the Senate and the Jedi in Anakin's case.
The Republic becomes an Empire with thunderous applause, betraying the people it was meant to protect.
And when faced between doing something he knows is right and giving in to his selfish desires...
... Anakin elects to do the latter, thus betraying his family and leaving the Force in darkness.
These selfish choices impact the galaxy as a whole, including the only characters in the trilogy who were doing their best to be compassionate and live in symbiosis: the Jedi, PadmƩ and Bail.
These champions of the Light Side are stuck playing catch-up or helplessly witnessing the events unfold, throughout the trilogy. They're playing by the rules and Palpatine uses this to his advantage.
Thus, as the galaxy tears itself apart because of Palpatine's manipulations, the Jedi and Bail are ignored and gradually weakened until they're either rendered irrelevant or killed.
A new order is born, one built on blood, lies and greed: the Empire.
But a new hope remains.
While before, the Jedi and people like Bail stood alone as everything around them became willfully corrupt... now, a Rebellion inspired by their legacy has banded together to overthrow the current order. But they don't fight for power or personal glory, they fight for altruistic, compassionate reasons. There's a sense of general responsibility that moves them, they're all doing their part.
On a larger scale, we focus on the Rebels, who are tired of seeing people suffer and decided this needs to stop. They have gone from being passive, to proactive.
On a more personal scale, we see the evolution of Luke, from naive farmer to a hero, and guess what? More and more selfish people - like Han or Lando - are inspired to join the Rebellion, after seeing the exploits of Luke, Leia, or even Ben.
It all culminates in the final film, wherein:
The Rebels band together with the Ewoks - literal teddy bears whom the Empire, in their arrogance, never even considered to be a threat - to destroy the Second Death Star and free the galaxy from imperial tyranny.
At the same time, Emperor Palpatine pressures Luke, who is tempted by the Dark Side like his father was.
But instead of giving in to his selfish desire to kill Darth Vader for all the horrors he's done...
... he finds the strength to rise above it, instead showing compassion for his father, which, in turn, inspires Anakin to do the same.
He faces a choice, like he did in Palpatine's office, two decades prior...
... and this time he chooses right.
Children teach you compassion. Anakin lets go of his fear and anger, and saves his son at the cost of his own life, finally bringing balance back to the Force.
Good triumphed over evil. Its champions achieved victory by being selfless, hopeful and fighting together / helping each other.
And that's it, that's how the movies thematically tie together.
As you can see, the Jedi aren't that directly impactful on the overall plot, because it revolves around Anakin, Luke and the respective factions/institutions around them.
But what the Jedi do bring to the table is their ability to teach and inspire others, both in-universe and out. They're spiritually impactful.
The Jedi are the epitome of compassion, and it's partially through them that George Lucas teaches his values to the audience.
#to be clear: Star Wars doesn't HAVE to be about all this#This is just me trying to summarize what Lucas said in all his interviews and speeches#The post-Lucas Star Wars transmedia franchise made the Jedi more central than they were originally meant to be; especially in the Prequels#You see this in interviews from current SW creators /writers#but also small stuff like renaming the Prequel era āFall of the Jediā when it was originally named the āRise of the Empireā era#meta#george lucas#star wars#jedi order#the force#anakin skywalker#luke skywalker#prequel trilogy#original trilogy

I donāt understand people shitting on āObi-Wan Kenobiā and āThe Book of Boba Fettā. Loved both series. I found them quite exciting ā both were interesting (rewatched recently), lovely character development, good acting. I donāt even have a lot of qualms with the plots. Yes, probably pacing shouldāve been better, but in general ā very positive impression from both series. Unlike from āAhsokaā when absolutely fine characters from previous projects become unlikable as people (looking at Ahsoka āattachments are ok and Jedi kinda suck, only Iām perfectā Tano and Sabine āfuck everything and everyone ā I nullify Ezraās sacrifice, and also I act like an insolent moody teenager at my 30sā Wren), and as a whole, I found āAhsokaā boring. āThe Acolyteā ā notorious for disjointed actions, flip-flopping motivations and shitting on previously established almost 45-year-old canon.
āOWKā features authentic Star Wars atmosphere. It was captivating to follow Obi-Wanās change, same as Revaās and Leiaās. I was touched by the moment with Darth Vaderās broken mask when we see Anakinās face peeking out of it and his voice teetering on edge of Anakinās natural and Vaderās mechanical, showing that we shouldnāt distinguish these two (as Disney loves now) ā theyāre one. Almost shed a tear at Jedi symbol scribblings on walls ā representation that for lots of common citizens Jedi are still a symbol of hope (that, as we know, will come). Owen and Beru, Bail and Breha ā caring and loving parents for their respective nephew and daughter. Obi-Wan coming back from his depression and finding hope again, relieving his heart of burden of smth that wasnāt his fault. Agrh, lovely.
āTBOBFā shares Star-Warsāy Tatooinian atmosphere with āOWKā ā except episodes of āThe Mandalorianā. Frankly, I felt put off by a sudden change in color scheme ā from warm sandy to cold metallic (ep.5-6). I really think the creatives should have focused on Boba alone ā tell more about his relationships with his new associates and with the town citizens, couldāve touched slavery problem (if he did anything with it, Iād love if he did), how he holds his business. Also instead of following Mando (who has his own series!!!) Iād enjoy talking more about Bobaās past, his relationship with his fatherās legacy and how he feels about leaving it behind, if he identifies himself as a Mandalorian or a Tusken or his own thing, how he feels about his clone ancestry⦠Lots of interesting themes to explore. I loved his character development, I adore that heās not depicted as this heartless hunter from the books. Also he shouldāve been given more agency in his ruling (the bigger part is done by Fennec). But still ā I rewatch his episodes with pleasure.

As someone who grew up on the clone wars, but didnāt watch rebelsāI canāt really comment on cohesiveness of continuity of the storyābut in general do you think Felony (that cracks me up) could have fleshed stuff out better in terms of characterization if season was given 12 episodes instead of 8?
I think it could have helped, but ultimately, no, I don't think the runtime was the problem--because it's not just 8 episodes, it's 8 full length episodes, which would be the equivalent of 16 animated/half-length episodes. I think there would have been plenty of room in these episodes to put more content in, because some of those fight scenes were hella long and not always that interesting, and I get that he wanted to write the story of how they found Ezra, but honestly he could have included some flashbacks if he'd wanted to flesh things out more, they wouldn't have had to be more than a few minutes long, and I think he could have spared the time for that. I'm trying to have sympathy for this, because I know you can't show every little thing--think about the jump between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, that before we ever had The Clone Wars, that was a massive chunk of the story that just didn't get covered beyond showing the start of it and showing the Battle Over Coruscant! But Felony isn't in the same place as George Lucas was--this is the Disney era of Star Wars, there have been multiple animated series, multiple live action series, and the Ahsoka series seems designed to have always been at least two seasons, so he had the room for it, if the equivalent of 16 episodes wasn't enough time. Ultimately, though, I just don't get the sense that he was interested in the set-up, that it had been cooking in his brain for too long and he wanted to get to the meat of it without the ramp up for those of us outside his head. I mean, maybe I might be wrong, but I found his writing for TCW s7 to be pretty thin as well, so I think he's just kind of Like That for me these days. There's plenty that's really good in the Ahsoka series! There's a lot I loved about Ahsoka herself, especially when she's prickly and almost kind of mean to Sabine, I love that she teases Huyang and clearly loves him so much, I love when she sighs and tries not to roll her eyes because everyone just has to make her day harder, the lightsaber fights were a lot of fun, her interactions with Baylan where he was hitting all her sensitive spots were delicious, I'm glad we got the show and I have great affection for Ahsoka's character in it! But I also stand by my criticisms of how a lot of it was just very, very aggressively less than it could be and I don't think more space would net us anything but more of the same. (But I do enjoy when my dash is excited about the show because it reminds me that my experience is not universal and some people got an absolute charge out of it and I really want to read about exactly what they loved about it. And I hope that I can give that back to, say, someone who found the Obi-Wan Kenobi series kinda disappointing, but I was over the moon for it, it's okay that you don't agree, but let me tell you about my joy for it anyway, just indulge me for a minute--!)

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers (except me because obvs I have done it). Spread the self-love ā¤
This is a lovely ask thank you!
Now let's see. 5 of my favorite fics I've written, hmmm.
I know no one asked for explanations but I'll give them anyway XD Here they are (these probably change depending on my mood), in no particular order even though they're numbered:
Lonely Stars Drifting In The Black (gen) Why is it fav? I of course CANNNOT go without mentioning this fic. My first, properly long fic that I finished. I remain so proud of what I achieved here and my commitment to writing it all out and FINISHING it. That used to be something so hard for me to do and I'm so proud of how I managed to write these complex relationships without sacrificing the character's morals. I-m still working on the series that sprouted out of it and I'm STILL so happy about the stories coming out of it. Fandom: Star Wars: Prequels Characters: Jango Fett & Obi-wan Kenobi Summary: It's an easy job, go in, get some information, and then Jango Fett can be on his merry way out of the disgusting Death Watch camp which he has nothing but contempt for. It WOULD be an easy job, that is if it weren't for the chained kid they've got, tied up like an animal⦠Jango sees red and nothing more. He'll make them regret the day they dared to lay hands on a child.
Of The Old Things Hidden In The World (gen) Why is it fav? I consider this one of my most self indulgent projects and I love it for this XD. It's a crossover but I take myself very seriously with it and that's one of the things I like so much about it. Could be silly but I don't let it be. I took a concept that I really liked (Merlin turning Aithusa human) and then I just REALLY ran with that idea. When I would usually hate miscommunication, this story is filled with it but it's purposeful and no one is being stupid about it. Fandom: Merlin BBC x Avengers MCU Characters: Aithusa, Merlin, Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff & Clint Barton Summary: Merlin and Aithusa have weathered this world together since the long gone age of Camelot. But now Merlin is in grave trouble and there's nothing Aithusa can do to help him. Merlin has commanded him not to follow, not to help. If Aithusa keeps doing nothing at all, it'll soon break his heart, surely. But⦠this new age has heroes, perhaps they might help. After all, Hydra IS their problem, isn't it? The should be the ones to deal with it.
A Crime Of Passion (gen, but can definitely be read as shippy) Why is it fav? This story gave me SO much grief but since the MOMENT I conceived this story I've loved the idea and at the end (despite all the problems) I keep loving the result I got from it. I got some good narrative out of it and TENSION. Characters being forced to do something they don't want to my beloved. Fandom: Twilight Characters: Carlisle Cullen & Aro Summary: For the life of Edward, Carlisle Cullen must make a bargain with the devil of Volterra himself, the bargain though, is not at all what the Doctor thought it would be. (Canon Divergence from the end of New Moon)
After The Mist (pre-ship but SUPER gen vibes) Why is it fav? This ones OLD and you can see a lot of mistakes in the writing but I LOVE the interactions that I wrote and the relationship I was crafting. I like it so much, love the idea of the story, that I STILL want to finish it and give it the love it deserves. Fandom: Frozen ll Characters: Agnarr & Iduna Summary: After young Agnarr returns to Arendell that faithful day in the forest, there's a grief too deep inside his chest he cannot begin to comprehend it. But there's no time to dwell on it, he's a king now and he must act as such. Still, he is drowning, he's drowning all the time. But there's someone out there who might just understand what this profound pain is doing to him. "My name's Iduna."
Drizzle By The Sea (Gen) Why is it fav? Another VERY old work which I'm still very fond off. It captures one of the things I love writing the most and it's this little pleasures like walking in the woods or getting soaked by the rain. I find the feeling it produced beautiful and it makes me happy so, yeah. The execution is maybe a bit clumsy but I know what old me wanted to transmit. I keep coming back to this sort of writing and I hope I never stop cause it makes me feel alive and like the world is magic. Fandom: Teen Titans (cartoon) Characters: Robin & Jericho Summary: Jericho is a bit... weird. Robin can see in the way the sea captures his attention that there's a natural feeling and a sense of delight that he carries with him. It's contagious.
Thank you so much for the ask @cilil it made me very happy and I did want to answer something like this today. I'm glad for that emotional boost, so thanks again <3

For the fanfic ask game: š š š„ŗ š¤² š„° (sorry I know that's a lot LOL feel free to pick and choose!)
The ask game <3
Oh no donāt apologize! I love people asking a bunch of questions because I love rambling about my fics!
š- What made you start writing?
I have two answers for this question, since I actually stopped writing a while ago and then got back into it.
I first started writing in general because I was primarily a Wattpad user (I had no idea Ao3 existed, but give me a break I was like 13) and I was reading fan fiction for a manga/anime series called Kuroshitsuji or Black Butler and I just wanted a heroine reader like me.
Most of the "readers" or "ocs" in those fics didn't really stand up for themselves and often let the guy characters walk all over them--or they would be referred to as "badass" but were never really given a chance to be badass. And, at the time, they were also mostly blonde haired/blue eyed.
So I started writing because I wanted a heroine reader that stood up for herself and didn't take anyone's shit and was actually badass on paper--and who had brown hair and eyes like me. I actually still have the full outline of the fic I was working on, and a draft of the prologue, and here are two commissions I bought for my oc:

I did eventually stop writing for a while, though, because I was just tired of writing and rewriting and rewriting (the outline and draft I have currently is my 3rd rewrite of the entire thing, 4th if you count the other completely different version of it--I get very nitpicky with my fics sometimes).
What got me back into writing was actually you. I started reading "Shoulder the Sky" and I saw how much work you had put in and how passionate you were about your fic and I just...got inspired. I already had an outline for The Great War sitting in my Google Docs (from back when I first got into Star Wars) and I basically decided "fuck it, if they can do then so can I, I'm gonna start writing again" and I did, and now I have two fics ongoing and several in the works that I can't wait to get to.
š- Tell me about an up and coming WIP!
Ok, one of my WIPs that I'm working on (that I hope to start writing soon, once I finish the outline) is a Modern!AU called "Deeper Roots."
Basically Cody and Obi-Wan are high school sweethearts who have had a long-distance relationship for over a decade now, since Obi-Wan had to move away from their town when he got custody of his siblings (Anakin, Ahsoka, and Reva) from their father (Qui-Gon) due to family issues.
Well, Obi-Wan and Cody decide that he should move back to town since Anakin will be starting college soon (he's 21, but took a gap year and then waited since he had an accident that took his arm) and the college of his choice is nearby + Ahsoka wants to go to that same college + they all miss Cody a lot and want to see him more.
Only one problem. Cody hasn't come out to his family and they have no idea he's dating someone, let alone that he has a boyfriend and that he's--for all intents and purposes--technically a father of three. They all try to keep things a secret from his family still, but things obviously get a whole lot more complicated once the two sides of Cody's life start to intermingle.
(also, I think Reva should be incorporated into their family in Modern!AU fics more often, I think she'd make a great youngest child)
š„ŗ- Is there a certain moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?
Ok, slight spoilers for BCC, but one interaction that always makes me emotional when I start to think about it is this one line that I have planned for the end of BCC.
Basically Obi-Wan and Cody are hiding away in a storage room after a hard battle and Obi-Wan says something about "not wanting to be High General Kenobi."
So Cody says that they don't have to be Commander and General. That, when it's just them, "they can just be Obi-Wan and Cody."
š- Would you please share a snippet of a WIP?
Nothing else is really written yet, so here's a snippet of the next chapter of Bloodshed, Crimson Clover:
The Force sparked restlessly under Obi-Wanās skin as he stared at the empty holomap in front of him, eyes searching it for the readouts of a battle that hadnāt happened yetāor, rather, was happening, but just out of reach. He could look away. Attempt to meditate, or finish last missionās report, or do something more productive with his time, but the near-blinding blue light of the blank screen had already seared itself into his mind and he knew that, even if he walked away, it would follow him.Ā
So he stayed.Ā
Staring.Ā
He hesitantly reached out along his and Anakinās Force Bond, gently pushing forward the memory of Crys announcing they were only fifteen minutes out and an impression ofā you? Them? Safe?Ā
Part of him didnāt expect Anakin to respond, and another part of him dreaded that very fact, butāas alwaysāAnakin was full of surprises. He was quickly hit with a twin pair of waves, harsh impressions of impatience and frustration that burned the back of his throat, and their corresponding memoriesāone of the 501stās Star Cruisers disappearing in a flash of fire and smoke, a supply ship they were escorting quickly succumbing to the same fate, Anakinās admiral informing him that they couldnāt hold out much longer.Ā
The taste of ash felt thick and heavy on his tongue, and it took him a moment to recover from the sheer intensity of it allāalthough he was careful to keep his expression devoid of any emotion. Anakin was strong in the Force, but that meant he often forgot to take into consideration how his power might affect those around him. Obi-Wan was used to it, however, so he was able to disperse the effects quickly enough, and the emotions that followed were all his own.Ā

i think andor was outstanding for star wars standards to be honest, mind blowing. but at the same time i get it why some people are defending shows like the mandalorian/ahsoka - after all star wars has always been mostly about the jedi and the sith and the force etc. andor's strength was that it was about more normal and daily life side of these events but it doesnt mean i dont want to see the jedi and the sith and their "glowing sticks" (although that treatment of TYPICAL star wars elements makes me raise my eyebrows... bc why are these people even in the fandom if they HATE everything star wars is about... i don't mind people wanting every star wars content to be andor's quality but i do mind people hating on literally everything star wars related and yet claiming to be in the fandom). the thing is... a show about the jedi and the sith and the force doesn't have to be a polar opposite of andor's quality. i wish we got a show about the jedi and the sith and the force that would be so full of powerful allegories, metaphores and quotes that would eat our hearts out. something like that duel scene in obi-wan kenobi series. on the other hand, i like how lighthearted the mandalorian is. but so far ahsoka feels boring because it's not as lighthearted and entertaining as the mandalorian but at the same time it lacks the depth of andor...
im sorry for leaving this in your inbox but you seem like a cool person and i dont have many friends to talk to about star wars fandom. also sorry for any language mistakes, i hope its not too chaotic but english is my second language š
No don't worry! I think I get what you mean, anon.
Some people seem to think Andor (and its fanbase) treat the Force and anything "fun" with disdain, when that's not the case at all.
One of my mantras for being a Star Wars fan has always been that I can go along with anything, as long as I can tell it's been done with care and a vision in mind. And without getting too into it, a few modern Star Wars projects have been lacking that care and vision for me.
I thought the first two eps of Ahsoka weren't terrible, but I wasn't invested in the main characters at all. Maybe that's because I've not seen all of Rebels. But then again, why should I have to watch all of Rebels to care? And that is the problem with a lot of modern Star Wars.

10 characters/10 fandoms/10 tags
the always amazing @aevallare tagged me <3 sooooo:
Astarion Ancunin (Baldur's Gate 3) - getting the obvious one out of the way early. you put a character in front of me who gets mad at you for being good and kind because no one has ever been that to him, who is a bitch and that's a feature not a bug, and im not supposed to become deeply obsessed with that? he is everything. to me.
Gideon Nav (The Locked Tomb) - tamsyn muir WHEN will my wife come back from the war? Devotion even when you hate it. Being a weapon in more ways than even you are aware of. Love when you don't know what love is, really, getting it wrong and right at the same time. Gideon @ Harrow is just "its rotten work. especially to me especially if its you. i'll fucking do it but christ alive."
Murderbot (The Murderbot Diaries) - i think i am one of the only people who thinks that Murderbot is on the fem-presenting side of androgynous but i do think that and i'm right. I haven't read the latest book yet. Being forced to interrogate an in-between space, Murderbot's "dont look at me" in combination with vulnerability, the desire to cut and run and figure yourself out and then, like. not actually figuring yourself out much. did the running help? did escaping do anything? or should you have stayed?
Stede Bonnet (Our Flag Means Death) - Cringefail fuck-up pirate my beloved, i hate watching him do things it's like looking in a mirror. Theater kid playing dress up, steeped in self-doubt and trying to get everyone to talk about their feelings. In season one he looks at his own life and says "is anyone going to ruin this?" and doesn't wait for an answer. I want to kiss him in the moonlight. Every time I think about him I want to throw up. <3
Keyleth (Critical Role) - The weight of the world on her shoulders because she's been raised to lead her people, and all that simmering rage she tries to keep under wraps, and then she only gets a tiny bit of time with the person she loves before she has to live for years and years and years and watch everyone she cares about leave her. Archdruids with timeless body are an existential nightmare.
Alex Louis Armstrong (Fullmetal Alchemist) - okay listen. when i rewatched fmab in college, I was fully ready to fall in love with Riza. I was very surprised when I realized that it was not the badass with the gun I was fixated on, but the. big muscle-y guy who cries a lot and gets used for comic relief 60% of the time. but. im here. i love him. the ishval flashbacks got to me.
Blue (This is How You Lose the Time War) - Loving someone enough you're willing to let them close enough to kill you. The inherent rot beneath blooming things. Taking the slow path. Not leaving well enough alone. Love, but with teeth. I'm so normal about her (lying)
Cora Sabino (Noumena Series) - I wish I could tell everyone to read Axiom's End because I loved it, but I cant because the sequel fucked me up so bad. Its good! but god the atmosphere is so oppressive and Cora's struggle with depression is extremely real for an alternate history story that asks the question "what if we found out aliens were real during the bush administration?" I was legitimately unwell.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars) - I just think he's the funniest guy with a laser sword. so repressed. had one of the most grey-jedi masters to ever do the damn thing. bitchy. the chosen one is his padawan. honestly he had to know anakin was sneaking out to canoodle with padme and just decided it wasn't his problem. calls himself fucking ben on the hell sand planet. why was he like that.
Spock (Star Trek) - this is the most "i just think he's neat" of all of them. i inherited this blorbo. this blorbo was handed down to me from my mom. he was hers first, im just picking up the torch. "guy who acts like he has no emotions but every seven years enters a fuck or die frenzy" im sorry but that's. that's too good. i have no choice but to rotate him in my mind.
I cannot tag 10 people but i will tag @asterordinary and @werewolfnobody and if anyone else wants to do it go for it! tag me so i can read your response!

i love it that you reblogged the āget to know the bloggerā post bc i saw you reblog a lot of āle belle et la beteā gifs and was curious about your general taste/favourite films šļøšļø
this is going to be so long i'm sorry but i just love talking about it so let's start!
i'm going to highlight some of the movies from my favourites list on letterboxd aka the movies that butter my bun:
ā Skyfall (2012) and 1917 (2019) both directed by Sam Mendes are honestly great movies with Skyfall for me being the best Bond movie and 1917 as one of the best war movies. What made 1917 one of my favourites was the watching it at cinema experience plus the reveal in the end is just *chef's kiss*
ā Tarantino movies. Like that's it. I know a lot of ppl don't like him but for me he's one of the best writers and sure has his problems but you cannot deny his work is great. Inglorious Basterds for me take the cake as his best movie with Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill: Part I being up there as well. One of his underrated movies is definitely Jackie Brown which I've loved.
ā Period dramas. Another one of my fave genres. Emma. (2020) being one of my favourite movies. Emma (2009) is also a great adaptation albeit it is a series. Pride and Prejudice (2005) and (1995) are great as well. Little Women has recently grown on me way more and remains my favourite Greta Gerwig movie. Another underrated movie for me is Ophelia which as the title says focuses more on Ophelia from the play Hamlet. It's really well done and I've enjoyed watching it.
ā This one is also a period drama but it is a bollywood movie so I wanted to highlight it. Jodhaa Akbar is a MUST watch such a good movie it's insane like I'm sorry you have a sword fight sequence between two lovers and you have won me over.
ā Let's get franchises out of the way. Obviously Marvel movies are some of my favourites with Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: Ragnarok which are in my top 3. Both Black Panther movies and Spider-man: No Way Home are taking honourable mentions. For their series my favourite has been Moon Knight. (Sony gets their cookies for Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse and obviously Venom because come on now eddie and venom are otp y'all don't get it like i do)
ā Next big franchise is Star Wars. Original trilogy: Empire Strikes Back. Prequel trilogy: Revenge of the Sith (I'm an Anakin girlie unfortunately) and Sequel trilogy: The Last Jedi (Rian Johnson supremacy). Series: Obi-wan Kenobi (i cried). Honourable mention to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (i also cried).
ā Since I mentioned Rian Johnson let's expand on that because the man just gets movies and everyone should watch Looper and Knives Out!!
ā Denis Villeneuve. MY MAN!!!! Arrival and Dune *chef's kiss* if you can bear longer movies also Blade Runner 2049 but it isn't one of my favorites exactly because it was long and boring. And since probably someone will say the same for Dune at least Dune has you looking at Oscar Isaac and Timothee Chalamet sure they look miserable but that's when men look the best.
ā Spy movies? like idk how to call this but let me list them all. Anna (2019) they succeeded where The Red Sparrow failed like if you're looking for anything similar to Black Widow Anna is the one I would recommend a thousand times. The Nice Guys and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. great comedies I just love them. It's not really a spy but assassin I guess but John Wick franchise is the shit and the best movie is obviously John Wick 2.
ā Another director that has me is unfortunately Christopher Nolan. Can I get more basic than that? I do admit his faults and that's sound mixing is fucking awful, I don't understand his movies while I am watching them most of the time and this man cannot write a female character for the life of him BUT š¶ shapes and colours š¶. His ideas are what draw me in and it's just visual masterpieces doesn't matter if I can't hear the dialogue if it looks good am I right?
ā Smashing musicals and animation together because this is already becoming too long. Singin' In The Rain and The Sound of Music are a MUST watch and also I'm a Phantom of the Opera girlie so if you're going to watch anything watch the 25th anniversary version. I am also unfortunately a Hamilton girlie and the damage to my life caused by that damn musical is irreparable. For animation musical Hercules, The Emperor's New Groove, Anastasia, The Lion King and Tangled and purely animation Howl's Moving Castle, Lilo and Stitch, The Incredibles and Inside Out.
ā Now it's time for a quick fire: Ford v Ferrari and Rush are two best movies for my motorsport girlies, Gone Girl and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire for my book girlies, Death at a Funeral and Hot Fuzz for the british comedy girlies, i'm also unfortunately a Titanic girlie probably the movie i've watched most in my life, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS!!! A. MUST. WATCH. Monty Python movies are great if you ignore some of the outdated jokes. Jackie is one of my favorites just because it's one of Natalie's Portman's best performances and that's also including Black Swan but both movies are also visually stunning.
ā The Death of Stalin is one of the best comedies as well. Ready Player One is one of my weirder favourites since many ppl see it as an average movie but i'd recommend it to anyone (literally can't believe it's my favourite Spielberg movie šš). Also add to the video game genre Tron: Legacy because I will also recommend that movie to anyone. The Grand Budapest Hotel is also a must watch like if anyone made the world go through a pink paint shortage before Barbie did then it's this movie and finally The Batman (2022). Let's end on a battinson note just because.
ā Crazy to think I haven't even mentioned all of my favourites but I guess this is kinda the jist of it all. Basically my taste is anything as long as I like it I guess jsbsjsbsjs. (I forgot to mention the horror genre but that's just because I don't really have a favourite movie like if I had to say anything it would be The Conjuring movies.)
ā As for Le Belle Et La BĆŖte it's one of my new favourites and honestly got me into a french cinema mood so I'll probably find more favourites there. One of my goals has always been to watch more foreign movies but not many have entered my favourites club unfortunately. Also fuck disney live-action remakes (except you cinderella (2015)).

Weekend Top Ten #666
Top Ten Jedi
Sometimes I nurture these things like a big-time CEO in a 1980s movie would nurture a Bonsai tree. And sometimes I just kinda bash āem out. Iāll leave you to decide what todayās list is most like.
Anyway, I was going to do something vaguely Star Wars-related due to the launch of new TV series Skeleton Crew. This show looks great fun, like Explorers or Goonies but with a delightfully Star Wars twist; and itās amusing that now Jude Law is having a go at being a Jedi.
Truth be told, I've fallen off the Star Wars train in recent years. I think itās a combination of fatigue ā so many different new things to keep up with ā and the fact that theyāve had a couple of mediocrities. I really didnāt get on with Rise of Skywalker, and as great as I thought The Mandalorian was, I have to confess to being disappointed by both Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi. In fact, I've still not got round to watching Andor, Ahsoka, or The Acolyte (which I guess makes me part of the problem now theyāve gone and cancelled it). However, i will make more of an effort for Skeleton Crew (and catch up on those other ones before the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in cinemas).
So basically all this preamble is me saying that I hope I can start to feel enjoyment for all things Star Wars again. For a while there, it was a pretty huge part of my entertainment life; now, though, it has been utterly usurped by the MCU (and probably the DCU too). In fact ā whisper it ā I'm way, way more excited for Star Trek nowadays. Please, whatever you do, donāt go back in time and tell teenage me that. I donāt think heād ever recover.
Anyway (again), one of the things I really love about Star Wars is the Jedi. I've said this before, but because weāve got so many different outer-space type shows these days, itās really the whole mythological thing that continues to set Star Wars apart. A sort of industrial/Wild West/used future thing, with bantering, wisecracking leads? You kinda see that in everything from Firefly to Guardians of the Galaxy and even ā oh no! ā modern Star Trek. But you add in some mystic, magic space monks with their sexy laser swords? Oh baby, now youāve got a Star Wars on our hands. More of that please.
And thatās what this weekās list is celebrating; those pyjama-clad denizens of Force Goodness, the Jedi. Theyāre cool in the original trilogy, with their whole magic, thought-control, telekinesis, swordfighting schtick; but itās the prequels that added so many fascinating wrinkles to the concept. The structure of the Order, their Byzantine rules, the way the Jedi comported themselves, and ultimately the fact that their adherence to old rules (as well as a dose of hubris) allowed the Sith to take over. And then thereās the fact that thereās, like, tons of them. One of the huge failings of the sequels in my view is that they didnāt lean back into the Jedi as a force (no pun intended); imagine an army of them fighting an army of Sith? That would have been epic.
Something else to note is that this list is pretty light on extended universe characters or those introduced in the āDisney eraā. This isnāt a criticism; itās just that Iāve not really seen, read, or played loads of that stuff. But in, I guess, the ācoreā Star Wars stories, there are plenty of really cool characters who embody lots of aspects of what makes the Jedi so⦠Jedi-ish. Unique, otherworldly, and just all-round cool. I mean, how many sci-fi or fantasy groups become so popular that people end up claiming it as a religion on a census? But, yeah, if you happen to be reading this and youāre a big fan of Mara Jade or Cal Kestis or, er, whoever theyāre called in The Acolyte, and youāre wondering where your favourite character is, thatās basically it.
So thereās nothing more to say except ābegun, this Top Ten hasā. Sorry.
Luke Skywalker: yes, it seems like a basic and obvious answer; heās basically the Jedi of the franchise. But thatās just it: he exemplifies all the best aspects of what the Jedi are meant to be, without the trappings or structure of the Order. Heās the prototypical boy hero, but just through his own inherent goodness he overcomes both the temptations of the Dark Side and the failings of the older Jedi. And then. And then! Older, wiser, and with failure hanging over him, he still manages to redeem himself, save everyone, and pull out one of the greatest feats of power in the whole saga. Basically, growing up watching Luke as a young man, then being a dad and watching him in sort of grumpy dad mode, is an incredible experience as a Star Wars fan.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: I like his as Alec Guinnessās wise old mentor in the first Star Wars, but really itās Ewan McGregorās take that seals the vote. At times pompous and arrogant, heās also very human and empathetic, straddling a line between emotionless fealty to the Order and his brotherly love for Anakin. Plus he manages to be both a bit of an action badass, and also a sassy camp git: āHello there.ā Ā
Anakin Skywalker: whilst thereās a whininess to him in the early years, heās a brooding presence over the prequels. Also, whilst heās a bit of a dick about it, his grievances are genuine: the Jedi are simply awful to him from the get-go. Heās also a war hero and a fantastic swordsman, and then he gets to become Darth Vader. And whatās more iconic and badass than Darth Vader? His whole arc ā the fall and redemption ā is the spine of the first six films and really needs to be celebrated.
Qui-Gon Jinn: the wise old mentor of the prequels, in a way, but thereās a humanity to him thatās lacking in most of the other Jedi. He might be the ideal of what the Jedi should be; dedicated to helping everyone, incredibly empathetic, but also serene, wise, and very powerful. If the Council had listened to him none of the bad stuff would have happened. Plus: he has a noble end. Not like that you filth.
Mace Windu: itās almost all in the performance, but thereās a swaggering sense of badassery to Windu. Heās basically the Jediās number two, the second most powerful member of the Council. He has some great lines, a sexy purple lightsaber, and gets to chop off Boba Fettās dadās head. Heās just so cool, dammit.
Yoda: in a way itās a surprise to see him this low! But heās the mentor of the Jedi Order, who manages to be incredibly wise and venerable but also has a quirky sense of humour and iconic speech pattern. Thereās a sense that he maybe understands the failings of the Order, how theyāre sleepwalking to disaster. He gets an awesome fight with Dooku, and arguably the best scene in the prequels (āwe are what they grow beyondā).
Rey Skywalker: the sequels are depressingly short on Jedi ā so much so that the only new one really is Rey herself. But as the lead across the trilogy, sheās terrific; skirting a line between light and dark in such a way that we did all wonder whether there might be a (temporary) fall on the cards. sheās empathetic and sees the good in others in a way reminiscent of Luke or Qui-Gonn but also carries a bit of the arrogance and physicality of Anakin. She was, all told, a very charismatic presence in the films. I hope they do eventually manage to get her new film off the ground.
Kyle Katarn: ah, here we go ā onto the expanded universe at last. It was really the games that drew me into the franchise in between trilogies, so it stands that the star of the Jedi Knight games would have a presence here. I like his arc in the games: he basically goes from being a Han Solo stand-in in Dark Forces to being a secret Jedi, combining the two best aspects of the original trilogy. I love his look, his voice, and his beard.
Ahsoka Tano: like I said earlier, Iāve never watched a lot of the supplementary spin-off shows ā whether thatās the likes of Clone Wars or the newer Disney ones. But Ahsoka is a cool new character even in the ones Iāve seen, starting out as a young apprentice to Anakin. Sheās full of spirit even back then, an excitable force of nature. Whilst the specifics of her leaving the Order Iāve not seen, when she reappears as an adult ā older, wiser, perhaps a bit more world-weary ā sheās remains a great character in a different flavour, doing that cool thing of combining the best of the Orderās teachings with a more humanist approach to the galaxy. Plus she has two lightsabers.
Leia Organa: sheās only this low because across the whole saga she doesnāt really do a lot of Jedi-ing. She clearly has a connection with her brother, and is just a generally empathetic presence. Itās only in the sequels that we get any proper examples of her using the Force ā subconsciously pulling herself across space, and the flashback of her training. So, as a result, we donāt really get a real sense of her as a āJediā; but, look, itās Leia. Sheās one of the best characters in movies. Sheās gotta be on the list.

Yeah, Jedi Quest got quite a few few things wrong but this is one of the things it did get right. I wasnāt a fan of it because I felt like that. It recycled a lot of the plot threads from Jedi apprentice, and as I grew older, I kind of realized on how Jedi apprentice shaped a lot of people thinking that the Jedi āwerenāt allowed to feelā because of that authorās particular interpretation in the Jedi order, which was quite erroneous as we see now in canon. Also an introduced a character that I hated. Now I like to quite a few characters in the Jedi apprentice series, because I thought that they were pretty cool. In Jedi quest there was a character introduced that I just couldnāt stand. His name is Ferus Olinā¦. He was introduced as the āperfect Jediā and how that came across as a self-righteous jerk that I wanted to kick off of his pedestal and repeatedly keep kicking him. I was a probably around Anakinās at the start of the Jedi. Quest started with him being 14 years old and I was close to around that age and Ferus just rubbed me wrong. He struck me as that guy who knows that ārightā and makes no allowances for mistakes and act like that he is the center of attention and is always in the right even when heās acting like a complete utter ass.
In fact, there is one story that I personally did not read, but got a glimpse of where he criticized Anakin for having feelings while being drugged. Yeah, he was victim blaming Anakin because Anakin felt something while being drugged. Do you see what I mean about arrogant? And then also on top of that and another book he went to Obi-Wan Kenobi and lectured him about Anakinās training. Yeah, Iāve read the clip and I wanted to jump through the book pages and start smacking him. And it just got progressively worse.
That thatās not getting into the characterization of Anakin. My gosh, what did they do to my poor boy. Yes Anakin has problems, but in the books they made him almost a borderline sociopath. Heās incredibly selfish and arrogant to the max. Was an arrogant in the movies? Yes he was and the narrative makes that clear. But they also made it clear that he was also very compassionate and caring, and while he could be arrogant, he was doing it because he wanted to help other people. In the book series that does not come across at all. All it shows is him being arrogant in a borderline sociopath. The opening book of the series shows him murdering someone who was a slaver in cold blood with no regrets whatsoever. Even in the movies when he massacred an entire village he was shown to have remorse, even if he felt like that, he had to justify his anger and horror.
Put the parts of the book series that turned me off. It was just one event. OK picture if you will thereās a big kerfuffle going around and four teams of Jedi Padawan and masters get separated from each other. Ferus, a guy named Tru who is supposedly Anakinās friend and Darra the fridged girl. Now this is where the stupidity really comes in to play. Tru has a faulty, light saber. Yes really. His master clearly does not notice that his apprentice has a faulty, light saber. No one in the temple notices this. Despite the fact that everybody and their mother says that the Lightsaber is their life and they must take care of it. So does he go to Anakin with his mechanical expertise? Of course, not because this book series wants to frame it as sociopath. The so-called friend goes behind Anakinās back and goes to Ferus who has very limited understanding clearly of Lightsaber working, which makes no sense but there we go. Anakin notices this repair and realizes that it would cause a fault and would make the light saber fail. Does he tell his friend? Nope again this book series is determined to become to let Anakin become a sociopath in the beginning he doesnāt tell his friend that it could short out. While theyāre in the middle of a dangerous combat zone. Which gets Darra, the fridged girl I was talking about killedā¦. Again that scene just rubbed me the wrong way and I could not stomach it afterwards. So much of that scene and that entire situation was raw. Can Anakin have a big fat ego? Yes he can. Anakin never let his ego get the way of saving the people that he cares about. He wouldāve told true about the Lightsaber fault. He wouldāve probably take it in himself and fixed it. He would not because his āfeelings were hurtā let that lightsaber fail so that way his friend would get killed or someone else would get killed. That kind of callousness was later on when Palpatine was goading him more and more because he had to visit him because of the war effort. Not while he was in apprentice surrounded mostly by Jedi.

And this is the story of Our lives and my husband was telling his first born and it's my first born too how he was interested in school and how he came to be interested in to learn and a lot of it was said Mom and Dad of his food constantly searching for things he liked and one day they finally a comic books and encouraged it and only a little to see if what he would do and he went and bought tons of them they were real happy started reading books it was reading a lot of books and he was studying and they thought it'd be a scientist and it didn't happen and too many people were stopping him he's Reading literature and doing some mathematics and a lot of history and it was curious to them but he was also doing engineering problems on the side and you took some engineering courses college and it's high School and he got enough to have a very strong grasp of it and they are pleased and he thought it was very weird he could understand things nobody was helping. But he needed to learn it he said that high school was very valuable going to the preparatory School was intense and he would probably have all of his kids go there young we pick our mates Young so they must have a system and see him it's kind of nerve-wracking but I think that they go to school together and sit near each other
And Carol Berman was my character and Carole barnhart and different people and I was switching in and out and you didn't notice it and boy was that fun when I thought you might know me and all sudden I figured out something you can't tell any of those stuffs going on so I had to educate him and he's a tough cookie but I can educate my kids and I know how to do it and I know how to get him to do things too and he knows how to get things going a different way in a different method and they're interested to see how and he likes people to know what they're talking about so I'm going to go ahead and introduce this series and we are very inspired by it when inspired by it for many reasons one of them is that we can learn about what's going on and sometimes about what they're using for ships and weaponry detention exaggerate or try and get people to believe stuff but a lot of it is actually what's going on and real and it's cartoonized this series cartoonized and Darth maul was amazed and sickened and it's true he has never said. But this is an amazing series and it's begun and Stan is in it has Obi-Wan Kenobi and they walk around thinking that my husband knows who they are and what they're doing is absolutely no clue what they're doing during the day he's not getting reports about that it's all this huge stuff but really he's absorbed and other stuff and then some of these idiots take up his time it's not really nice or Fair but then when he starts watching the movies everybody tries to get them to go to one side or the other and becomes a real difficult task. And our son and daughter-in-law Savage opress that's both of them they want to speak
Hera
Very well and very good mother and father. We are liking your introduction very much and we are also going to give our introduction to the series. Right now we are there we are part of it our characters are fighting wait alongside others and we are more or less rebels and we are doing the job and they see us out there and they can't tell who we are what we are and it's a huge battlefield and it's in Tunis which is actually Tunisia and it's a smaller part of it. It is where the battle that you've seen in the clones attack part of Star wars but it's not that particular battle but it is working up to it over the next few days it will get to it and that is one of the places where Star wars begins there are several where it starts and that's the movie series. Right now these cartoonized versions are playing all over the world everyone is jumping up and down saying it's happening now and it's the serious they've been waiting for intrigue mystery the Max on the line Darth Vader is even a rebel and one of friends of our son when they were younger and and became an acquaintance because it was very difficult and he did the right thing and they noticed that they have a little tough time getting along and Stan acts much older and he's knows a lot more about what's going on then our father but he doesn't know this huge stuff as well and they're huge huge concepts wrapped up in little events and all of these gifted people try and make one every day and it is disgustingly horrible. You keep on doing it they say we did plan it out and it's like they planted for years like to get me money from social security treasury with a certain number and not to just jump right out there and they did plan a lot of this for a long long time and I started showing them a few things they said wow we get it and we have plans of Our own so they're going ahead with it and they're going to try and do stuff but really this is been going on for a long time but this starts now and we are impressed it is very realistic sometimes difficult to see who we are and who they are but we work it out
Savage Oppress
You think our father for putting so much effort into getting the name right it takes a while but these are important statements. We're going to war with these people and it is a heck of a war it has started it is large and proportionate with what's going on and other some groups are going to be eliminated more locker if you one of them not a big or still last a bit longer? The people have surmise because of the islands. They also begin a large assault on there on the shield in a few days and the empire can see them prepping and it is a very dangerous War. We have a lot of people out there and we have a lot of action and it is very risky but we need to do it right now in Tunis we have 450,000 troops and the empire has 200,000 troops and the rebels have 300,000 troops and the clones who everybody is fighting has 1 million troops it's small but it is the beginning of the clone wars and shortly in two or three days the attack of the clones Star wars the series in the movie series and the book series begins all the characters and all the people you've seen here and other places are real they're real people or they're real deities or real robots and it is intense. And my father and mother know them all and my father has seen them all in person he himself and it is rare and Hera has seen a few in person but with her character just like us but he's sitting there with them and yeah he has trouble staying there with so much vile stuff coming out and it proves that is true. The series has begun we are out there in battles everyday all day long there is something to fight for there it's a shape it's far below it's not the Giant pyramid like thing or hexagon thing it's a dark shadow and people are going after those they don't know what they are and they want to find out
Darth Maul and I am his race I am his offspring
Darth Talon I am his race as well but offspring of different line completely and we intermarried on purpose and the future holds the secrets okay father okay it says like Austin Powers
We're going to begin this process of introducing movies and we're going to try and do it more orderly timely fashion so going to have people help him cuz he has no idea nobody's giving me a heads up here to him much it just ran stand by and smirked at him head stand smirk
Thor Freya we have parts then we were wookie
You're also there and we're having a lot of fun we are there
Hera Zues we have a bunch of characters and we name a few not really headliners like people keep saying it's true
They have some important characters and it's true they're not main characters and that we do it on a purpose

Ranking Magical Mentors
(a completely incomplete and objectively biased analysis, donāt @ me)
Shazam (Shazam!) Score: -~.5/10
Shazam gets -1 point for every year he spent looking for a hero who will receive phenomenal cosmic powers while not having "fully matured brain" as one of the hard requirements of the job. The exact number of years isn't specified; he said he'd been looking for "centuries" but is in fact from Ancient Egypt or before then, so being bad at math subtracts another .5 from his score.
Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter Series) Score: 0/10
Written by a transphobe, fell in love with a nazi, gave a kid to abusive relatives, categorizes some children as evil and then punishes them for it. No points to Dumbledore.
The Ancient One (Doctor Strange) Score: 1/10
Whitewashing and Orientalism disguised as feminist, post-racial open-mindedness. You canāt just throw a bald Tilda Swinton at the problem and expect it to do the work for you.
Glinda the Good Witch (The Wizard of Oz) Score: 2/10
Glinda purposely manipulates an ignorant farm girl and sends her on a path to kill the Wicked Witch of the West even though Dorothy had the tools to get home the entire time. So -5 for being a terrible mentor but +5 for being a girlboss. Depending on what source material you consider canon she is possibly working out some blended family trauma, possibly a figment of Dorothy's psyche? She ends up at a 2/10 for being incredibly patronizing and giving off church lady energy by not only unironically deigning herself "Good" but also making that a huge part of her identity.
Brom (Eragon) Score: 3/10
This was definitely a guy who existed and was in a movie I've seen. Not actually magic?
Gaius (Merlin) Score: 5/10
The magical mentor of the original magical mentor himself. Set up to be wise but in hindsight gave Merlin a lot of very bad advice, chiefly in not advising him to tell Arthur the truth a long, long time ago. Best āsweet old manā vibes on this list though.
Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander (Legend of the Seeker) Score: 7/10
Zed is a wise old wizard who actually survived his protege's call to action, but he was also constantly being written out of fights to counterbalance that. Negative points for reducing the found family aspect of being a magical mentor by, y'know, actually being related to his charge. Gains points again for constantly hyping every new type of magic as "P O W E R F U L Ā M A G I C" and because Bruce Spenceās scenery chewing and Sam Raimi's sense of humor are a match made in cheesy TV heaven. When magic turned him young again he looked a bit like James Spader, but Iām not sure how to score that.
Dishonorable Mention: Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander (Sword of Truth Series) Score: -10/10
I haven't read it, but I've heard this book series described as "Ayn Rand high fantasy". The true Randian ideal is pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and having a magical mentor at all sounds too much like filthy communism to me. Why canāt you teach yourself magic, Richard?
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars) Score: 9/10
He may be from sci-fi but he's a classic magical mentor. He loses some of the mystique he presented in the original trilogy by having his entire background gone over with a fine tooth comb in prequels, expanded universe novels and television. Dramatic b*tch and a bit of a troll, especially as a ghost. Dinging him one point for lack of prerequisite wisdom with regard to some of his life choices.
Moiraine Damodred (Wheel of Time) Score: 10/10
A perfect score for absolute perfection. She's not dead (yet? no book spoilers!) so that puts her ahead of a lot of people on this list, she is also the only magical mentor with enough foresight to invest in a bodyguard. Great judge of character and knowledgeable about a lot of things while still being much younger than your average magic mentor, which highlights her hustle and work ethic. Moiraine takes on multiple possible Chosen Ones at once, proving herself the modern solution to magical mentorship (as well as a perfect representation of the overloaded modern worker being forced to do multiple jobs at once).
Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings Series) Score: 100/10
Gandalf is wise, powerful, frustratingly vague, disappears at inopportune times so the hero has to solve his own problems... This guy has it all going for him, including some of the best lines in the series. Died at the appropriate moment to drive the hero's journey and then walked it off. Somehow manages to seem cool and virtuous even though he's a senior citizen who hangs around small "innocents" while smoking copious amounts of weed and setting off fireworks. Looked better in gray, but what can you do. A true icon.

Granny Weatherwax (The Discworld Series) Score: ā/~
Granny doesn't hold with all of this numbers and ranks business. She can't be having that kind of thing. However if you must know, she is definitely up there near the top. Has been the magical mentor of at least four young witches and hasn't been murdered yet. Excellent references.
#High Fantasy#Granny Weatherwax#Gandalf#Moiraine Damodred#Obi-Wan Kenobi#Zeddicus Z'ul Zorander#you'll be happy to know two different people have informed me it's not weed#if I missed someone important I'm very sorry that I'm not at all sorry

Please rant. (I may or may not have watched it, too)
Okay so if nobody wants to read this, hereās the TL;DR of how I felt about the entire series at the close of the show:
If you do, I just:
First off, I see a lot of people bash GRRM as an author, and while I think a lot of it is warranted, a lot of it I think, is unfair. GRRM, like every single other fantasy author whoās penned anything after 1970, has to live under the massive shadow of Tolkien, which is not a very easy shadow to get away from, develop a distinctive style from, or not borrow heavily from, particularly if your flavor of fantasy is high fantasy. But despite my qualms with Martin (how have the Wildlings been separated from the rest of Westeros for 6,000-8,000 years and not developed a separate language at this point? Why is the Faith of the Seven and the Faith of the Old Gods SO fucking lazily constructed? Why canāt Martin keep his numbers straight when he talks about his battles? Why did I have to read a sex scene in which a guy who is still somehow massively obese despite living in a frozen wasteland for a year and a half fucks a girl on a ship and drinks her breastmilk? Jolkien Rolkien Tolkien would have never done this to me) I still love his writing. Because Martin has always set out to explore āthe human heart at war with itselfā in a fantasy setting, and despite all the problems I have with him, I think heās done a tremendous job of it.
You see, there are SO many things I could bitch about with this show, so, so many (ask me later why I hate all the blue dresses Emilia Clarke wears) But honestly? None of them really matter as much as what I view as the Main Problem of the show, and actually, a good portion of them stem from the Main Problem. Whatās the Main Problem? The Main Problem is that despite Georgeās pussyfooting lapsed Catholic views (which is why we donāt get, in my opinion, in-universe religions that are fleshed out very well) despite his absolute weeny āwar is so mean and bad :(ā Vietnam draft dodger takes, George Raymond Richard Martin is a Romantic at heart, and he loves his readers, he loves fantasy, and he loves putting his characters through horrendous, disgusting, grimy, hopeless situations, because when they come through, beaten, nearly torn to shredsābut alive, he is right there celebrating the unbreakable endurance of the human spirit with his readers. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are nihilists who hate their audience and who love shoving their faces into mud and filth for no reason other than they take a sick pleasure in the pain and disgust of the people whoās faces theyāre shoving into mud and filth.
I donāt remember the exact quote or interview, or which of them said it, but one of the D&Dās said that they were first inspired to develop the Song of Ice and Fire book series into a show when they read the Red Wedding scene. This is already a horrendous start. They were salivating the thought of bringing a scene that was supposed to be so horrible, so disgusting and unspeakably repulsive and wrong that it reverberates around the world and even is witnessed by characters who arenāt emotionally involved nor even geographically near (recall that Danaerys has a vision of it in the House of the Undying long before it happens). But GRRM didnāt write that scene, nor any other awful scene to rub his readerās face in misery and horror. Recall how the death of Eddard Stark is written. He suffers in a hallucinatory fever for days before his execution, agonizing about the wrong heās committed in his life. His death is witnessed by his two daughters. From a Watsonian standpoint, our hearts are meant to break, just as Sansa and Aryaās hearts broke when they are made to look on the death of their father. From a Doyalistic standpoint, the death of Ned Stark was nearly inevitable, just as the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi and so many other mentors had to happen, because the death of the mentor is an integral part of the heroās journey. Nedās death sets his widow and all of his children upon their paths to their own inevitable triumphs and ends. Furthermore, in any comedy, that is, in any story that ends happily, the hero or heros must travel in gyre. That is, they must travel on a crooked, twisting path to ļæ¼reach the end. If they donāt endure trials before they end, thereās no catharsis for them. Othello travels in a straight line towards Desdemona to place his hands around her neck to strangle her, without stopping. Without thinking that maybe he might check to really see if sheās been unfaithful. As a rule, straight lines end in tragedy, twisted roads end in comedy. The point of what Iām trying to say is that: GRRM didnāt kill Ned Stark to be malicious or to purposely cause pain to his readers. He killed him because the plot needed it. But D&D? Dipfuck and Duckfucker killed Ned, and Ros, and Sandor Clegane, and Theon, and all the people they killed because they think itās funny when people die and they revel in filth and misery and they hate when things are good. Look at the way GRRM writes Nedās arrival in Kingās Landing versus the way D&D write it. BookNed rides up, and is immediately summoned to the Small Council meeting. He tells the messenger to wait while he changes into nicer clothes, knowing that appearances are important, knowing full well that heās walking into a den of vipers. ShowNed? He walks right into the Small Council meeting in his travel clothes, brusquely brushing off the messengerās protestations that he change into something nicer in a thick Scottish accent. Why does he do this? Because Ned Stark is so stupid and so dumb and he doesnāt play the Game of Thrones.why does Show Ned Stark trust people like Maester Pycelle and Littlefinger? Well BookNed doesnāt trust Pycelle, and has no reason at all to distrust Littlefinger or any way to know that heās going to be betrayed by him. But again, ShowNed is a fucking stupid, dumbfuck hick, and he doesnāt know how to blay the GAMBE of Thrones!!! Why does BookNed inform Cersei that heās going to tell Robert about the incest, and give her a chance to leave? Because heās one of the ONLY people who has a kind, honorable, and true heart, and he doesnāt t want to see a woman and children be killed. And again, he has NO possible way of knowing that Petyr Baelish is going to betray him. But ShowNed? Well he does this because heās STUPID and he doesnāt know how to play the gAmE oF tHrOnEs and only STUPID people are nice,,,,IDIOT!!!!!and this is the problem. (Continued in reblogs)
