TATFS’s strategies for surviving illness with no health insurance- a long post

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a doctor, nor do I have any medical background. I’m just someone who spent a chunk of their time being too poor to see a doctor and scared to death and managed to figure out some basic things that worked, so consume and apply the following text using your own discretion.

So as someone who has spent a scary enough chunk of their adult life uninsured, I’d like to share with you fine folks my own personal general strategy for effectively fighting off nasty illness and avoiding a doctor as much as is reasonable. I’ve sucked out the beginnings of full-on upper respiratory infections with OTC meds before with my own combos and also some tips from pharmacists who took pity on me back in the day. The bare basics are as follows- 1) dry up what’s starting up in there

2) flush it out and keep flushing so it can’t take up residence again.

3) stop fevers that either get too high or refuse to break on their own (fevers are your body trying to kill the bad stuff, and I’ve experimented with letting low grade ones run their course, but if they get too high or don’t seem to ever break, you gotta stop ‘em.)

You can do this with three main things-

1) some sort of decongestant/antihistamine (used to use sudafed (pseudoephedrine) but now use 24h claritin (Loratadine) dissolve tabs- bonus in that it should still be on the shelves. no one’s panic buying allergy meds!). This will start to dry it up. (If you are in a risk group for glaucoma/have eye pressure concerns, cut yourself off after 7 days max for claritin. There’s nothing on the box to suggest it, but I did two weeks once, started getting suspicious, went to the eye doc, and I was on the line. 7 days is a safe cut off, though, and you should be good by then anyway.) 2) guaifenesin (aka mucinex)- super cheap stuff, has no known interactions with anything to my knowledge, and it’s probably the most harmless drug ever created. This is gonna break up all the bad shit and flush it all out so long as you keep up lots of liquids. 3) take TYLENOL (acetaminophen) for fever and/or pain from sinus pressure. And only tylenol. NSAIDs aren’t going to help you and may actually make things worse, especially with corona according to an article headline I saw. whatever, they don’t touch that shit anyway. Tylenol breaks fevers and that’s all you need to know. Deceptively simple, but it’s legit. Once you’re on this stuff, you have three main responsibilities- 1) DRINK LIQUIDS. I like buying 32floz or 1000 ml bottles of water or some mellow tasting sports drink (stay away from stuff with heavy dyes, it’s just bad for your guts. gatorade has plenty of light colored transparent drink flavors. Pocari Sweat saved me from a hospital trip once) because then I know that if I finish the bottle, I drank plenty of liquids that day. Yes you’re gonna piss yourself- that’s the point. Your nose will probably run a bit more, too- that’s the point. Time to flush the gunk out! 2) EAT THREE MEALS A DAY. Guess what’s worth investing in? Your health. Eat breakfast. Eat a bowl of soup with crackers for lunch. Eat something solid that’ll stick to you for dinner. You’re sitting around but your body is burning extra fuel to fight off illness, so feed it!! You’ll notice pretty quickly how much better you feel almost magically after having eaten a good soup for lunch. Throw caution to the wind and feed yourself. 3) STAY STILL. Most of us are stuck indoors anyway what with lockdowns and all that bullshit, but just stay still. Camp out in your room or your couch or something for a change of scenery. Doing work that makes you move a lot or heavy chores will run your body down when it’s trying to fix you up. You’ll get better faster if you just sit still, watch a little tv, and play video games/knit/crochet/something to occupy your hands. Even when you start to feel a lot better, give it a few days- you’re still fighting it, so don’t mess up the progress. Just chill, and relax.

Here are some bonus tips:

1) ECHINACEA TEA. Drinking echinacea tea is actually something the last doctor I saw recommended to me. Maybe do a cup once a day while you’re feeling badly. I wouldn’t do it as a once a day for the rest of your life sort of thing, but once a week is probably fine when you’re healthy. It helps boost your immune system.

2) Dissolvable zinc tablets. Now these were sold out last time I went to the store, but I think they’re great. They’re white tablets that come in a few flavors and you’re to let them dissolve completely. No chewing. Zinc has been shown in peer-reviewed scientific studies to hinder virus replication in the body, which is great. For this reason, it’s best to start the tablets the moment you get the feeling you might be getting sick to head things off and lessen the effects of the future illness, but do what you can. They take about 15mins to dissolve in your mouth. If you follow the directions to the T on the back of the box, you’ll notice by about day three that your tastebuds have sort of taken a vacation and food tastes a bit bland, but that’s just zinc for you and it all goes back to normal after a couple days of not taking them. Remember that the tablets work for viruses, not bacterial illnesses (although zinc can also be good for sore throats in general).

3) Multivitamins can’t hurt, and you can also easily cut half a lemon, squeeze it in a mug, dump a bunch of honey in there, and pour boiling water over it for a tasty, vitamin C-rich drink. HOWEVER, if you have serious, serious heavy gunk in your lungs, please stick to ice chips and avoid hot drinks. Ice chips were a miracle idea some desperate victorians figured out that actually started saving their kids from dying from dyptheria. I’m not saying give up warm drinks entirely, but ice chips can help significantly.

With all this said: Listen to your intuition and your gut and if you feel like nothing is getting better, have had unnerving scares with phlegm, etc. just suck it up and go see a doctor!! No matter what, you living is the most important thing on earth, so if things start to feel like they’re out of your control, don’t think about it, just go.

Luckily as far as corona is concerned, the majority of folks below the age of 40 will have mild to no symptoms at all, which...in and of itself is rather creepy, but take what you can get. As it’s something that also seems to like to cause upper respiratory infections, these above tips and experiences, developed when I myself had the beginnings of an upper respiratory infection, are hopefully useful, especially to folks who don’t have insurance during this spooky time.

JUST TO REITERATE: I am not a doctor and the above is just to share what I do personally during times of severe to moderate illness with no health insurance. It’s up to you to decide what’s the best strategy for you.

sleepover saturday: so i know i should take medication for depression and anxiety but i'm irrationally afraid of it. i can take most other medications no problem, but for some reason this is different. i think i'm afraid of the symptoms or of it changing my temperament, but i also have trouble swallowing pills. i feel like it would help me to take it but i just can't get myself to do it. i've even thought about taking a smaller dosage at first but it still feels bad for some reason. any advice?

[My usual disclaimer: I am not a medical professional! I’m a literature scholar who bases literary scholarship on psychology and who happens to suffer from several mental illnesses, so that’s where I’m coming from]

First of all, this is definitely something you should discuss with your psychiatrist. It may be that medication is right for you, and it may not be. Some types of depression (moderate to severe, and chronic) respond well to medication, and some don’t. Some types of anxiety do, and some don’t. Your psychiatrist will be able to determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for medical intervention, and if so, talk you through the specific medications that are right for you.

That being said, medications for anxiety and depression don’t change who you are. I like to think of them as letting you be the person you are, and taking away weird shit that’s stopping you. Think about it this way: anxiety can be conceptualized as an overactive response to troubling events, or a response that doesn’t go away when it should. Taking anxiety meds doesn’t mean you never get anxious. It just means that you get anxious a normal amount about normal things.

A lot of worries over depression meds changing a patient’s personality are connected (as I understand) to legitimate worries that arose when the first antidepressants, MAOIs, were introduced. They, as a class, require strict dietary monitoring, and tend to have more side effects than more modern second and third gen antidepressants. Nowadays, they’re only used in treatment resistant depression, or when a patient can’t tolerate different classes of antidepressants and has worked their way through the atypical ones.

So you’re not likely to end up on one of the ones people traditionally worry about, and in fact, you can tell your psychiatrist you’d like to avoid MAOIs, or any other specific drug you have questions about.

The way I’d describe having an antidepressant that works as feeling is like going from a world where everything feels the same or terrible to a world where you can get excited, you can cry, and you can feel a full range of emotions. It’s the most liberating thing I’ve ever experienced, and it made my life so much better that the thought of going back to being without it strikes fear into my heart.

Think of antidepressants and anxiety meds proscribed by a doctor like any other med that treats symptoms of an illness - because that’s what they are.

Last but not least: swallowing pills. First of all, most prescription antidepressants and anxiety meds are a lot smaller than the OTC stuff you might be used to, so they’re much easier to get down. Secondly, there are ways to learn to swallow pills. I used to be incapable of it, but got repeated ear infections as a kid, so I had to learn how. My grandmother had me ball up pills in tiny bits of bread and then chew the bread a few times before swallowing it - it taught me to get the pills down. There are lots of similar tricks you can look up if you end up taking medication.

Whatever you and your psychiatrist work out is best for you, you don’t have to stick with it forever. If you decide you don’t like the effects, you can always choose to go off a pill regimen for depression and anxiety. (Though only do so under your psychiatrist’s care. You don’t want to suddenly stop taking any med that’s proscribed for long term use.)

Hey, question for other autistic people:

Anyone know any key words to look out for when searching for a PCP? I’ve had some...not so great experiences with other doctors claiming I ‘can’t be autistic’ because I’m ‘too normal and responsive’...and I’m also scared of one treating me like I need to be ‘cured’. I was diagnosed shortly before I turned 21, so navigating...everything...is complicated.

However, I need to find a new PCP, as the PCP I’m currently seeing doesn’t take my concerns seriously*. I’m starting a search, and have to keep it within my family’s insurance plan.

So...are there certain types of specialists to avoid, or alternatively specialists that tend to be more responsive? (I can’t word right now, sorry).

*Examples under the cut as it doesn't ultimately matter but I want to emphasize the type of woman this is.

So, first off, my mom and I share a PCP, and my mom LOVES her. Because she respects Mom as a fellow healthcare provider, and is therefore more receptive when Mom wants to discuss medication options.

Me? Not so much.

About two years ago, in late October of 2015, I suddenly found myself sickened by food. It hard to put into words, but just the thought of eating had me nauseous, and if I did eat, I felt like I would be sick. And yet I also felt like I was perpetually on the verge of a hypoglycemic episode. I brought this up to my PCP during my yearly physical, explicitly making a point to emphasize that it impacted my ability to eat anything (which is honestly very stressful if you’ve ever had an eating disorder).

She told me to buy some OTC ulcer/GERD meds (despite me already telling her I tried that already), and then proceeded to tell me to pursue a diet with more veggies (which I’ve stressed is challenging because of sensory issues) after I got over it.

I struggled to eat for three months after that. At least one meal a day was usually Naked juice. I nearly fainted in a Target. My dad ended up sneaking me metoclopromide tablets (don’t take Rx meds w/o a prescription, btw; my entire family works in pharmacy, so we know the risks, but it’s still not a good thing to do).

And then last spring, I made the mistake of breaking in new, supportive shoes during Spring Break camps-when I was on my feet for at least 8 hours straight a day. I was in so much pain. I couldn’t lay down, could barely walk-I spent as much time as possible in a chair and everyone at the center respected that because my face was constantly contorted into an expression of agony. Because Mom was working out of town, I had to see my PCP by myself again.

First off, I guess she completely forgot I’d ever seen her before, despite being my PCP for two years, as she completely re-introduced herself, titles and all.

I explained my pain and how much it was limiting me, and made a point to mention that I didn’t think it was a pinched nerve, as it was never numb or tingling. Rather, I had a sense that a tendon/ligament/muscle (I can’t remember which) had slipped too close to one of the sockets of my hip. It’s been nearly a year, and I think I’ve blocked the exact memory of the pain, so this might not be the most accurate description, but the point is I knew exactly what I was feeling, even if I couldn’t find the term for it.

PCP did a very quick, basic manipulation of my legs and hips, barely applying any stress (which I understand, but at the same time inconclusive results from a lack of testing mean pretty much nothing), and when I expressed almost no pain, she decided it was a pinched nerve.

Still, she agreed to write me a referral to a PT.

Also she told me again that I should diet (you guys have seen me, right? I’m not the thinnest, but I’m not outside of a healthy weight range, either, or if I am just barely), and again ignored ‘I have debilitating depression and certain foods are hard and you’re demanding a giant leap instead of helping me with small steps’.

I saw a PT a few days later with Mom, who actually went out of his way to see me at a secondary office on a weekend. After a more thorough but still not painful series of manipulations, he came to the exact same conclusions I did.

So long story short: my PCP is not a good match for me and I really need a new one.

Day 1 - Escitalopram

Let’ start here. I’ve had OCD most of my life. It’s morphed in different ways with different avoidances and escapes. Gambling. Drinking. OTC Meds. For 30 years, I’ve just lived with it as I could.

Anxiety about a lot of things. Lots of triggers. Tons of avoidance.

CBD helped for a couple of years now. Took the edge off and really made me calmer. But now the hormones are changing and I find myself in the OCD morph again and it’s getting harder and harder to eat, live, focus and enjoy life at all. Sometimes I think I’d just like to not be me or be here anymore. Yet I am grateful for the wonderful life I have had (minus the bad stuff). So I don’t have too much choice. Live with it and develop another addiction to benzo’s or whatever, or try therapy and SSRIs.

So here we go.

Day 1: So fucking nervous and scared. I am terrified of meds. The only med i took for the past decade were acetaminophen and advil. I haven’t drank in years. Don’t even take cold meds except dye-free Dimetapp. Paradoxyl reaction to drugs like Benedryl and now even acetaminiphen. So i take vitamins and that’s about it other than allergy spray for my nose.

And I just took 5 mg of escitalopram. I’ve been researching the side effects and what to expect for the first couple of weeks. Not that many good stories out there to be found easily. And i get that most people when they feel ok don’t go shouting it out. But when it’s bad, people look for help and that’s when you hear the stories. That’s one reason for this writing. I want to know,DAY BY DAY, how it went for someone. To relate to. Can’t seem to find that. So I figured I’d start one.

I woke up a little light-headed today. Probably weather. We have warm weather with clear skies for the next few days.

So that’s this morning so far. I took it about an hour ago and so far, I am still just nervous. I’m praying things are as easy as possible and that the side effects are manageable with a lorazepam here and there. I should mention I’ve been taking .5 mg lorazepam since December, and that is starting to feel like a physical dependancy, which is another reason why i want to take these meds.

Anxious about taking anxiety meds. Fucking stupid.

How to Keep Your Child Naturally Healthy

I see it in the natural mama community all the time.

A lot of the mamas are brand-new to this whole natural-living gig. They’re used to the mainstream advice to go to the doctor, get vaccines, and take lots of medicine. This is all they know as far as “keeping kids healthy,” but they’re looking for a different — and better — way.

Many of these mamas are nervous. They feel like if they aren’t doing all that mainstream stuff, they need to do something else! Something to keep their precious babies from getting sick.

I get it. I really do.

But, mamas? We need to talk. There are things you can and should do, but they’re not as complicated or expensive as you may feel like they are. It’s the mainstream that convinces us we need a lot of things and that it’s hard to keep kids healthy. For the most part, though, it’s not.

Let me explain….

How to Keep Your Child Naturally Healthy

Keeping kids healthy didn’t used to be a big deal. They played outside a lot, often barefoot. They got plenty of fresh air and sun (for vitamin D). They ate farm-fresh foods because that’s what there was. Outside of crowded, unsanitary cities (where disease spread easily because of human and animal waste and a total lack of understanding of hygiene), people were pretty healthy. They didn’t have the rates of chronic illness that we have today.

Moms look at kids today and they’re fearful. How can they keep their kids healthy with all of that around?

The truth is, just avoiding all the mainstream junk is a big step in the right direction. Not eating junk food, not using OTC meds or repeated courses of antibiotics, not vaccinating…. Avoiding the things that are causing the damage is a big deal! (If you’re curious why I said that about vaccines, then do some more reading HERE.)

Of course, there are also simple, obvious things that everyone can agree on, like getting plenty of play time/exercise, washing hands regularly, and not being around sick people. Those go a long way to helping you stay healthy too!

Do you need to do more?

Maybe.

It all depends on if your family seems prone to illness or not, if you live in a crowded area (more exposure, illness circulates more easily), if you’ve had a less-than-optimal early experience (like you’re transitioning from a more mainstream lifestyle), etc. If you’re already experiencing issues, you may need to be more proactive than someone who’s relatively healthy and wanting to stay that way.

But, either, way…mama, don’t freak out. There is no perfect when it comes to health — natural or otherwise. Your child will get sick occasionally. It’s not a bad thing, when it comes to 24-hour bugs and minor sniffles. Everyone gets those from time to time. What you’re trying to avoid is frequent illnesses, or more severe illnesses. If your child gets a cold, or gets a tummy bug, you didn’t mess up. It’s part of life sometimes. It’s okay.

Gut health is a hugely important area, because so much of our health is rooted in our guts. If we don’t have healthy gut flora, we’re more likely to develop allergies, IBS, and a whole lot of other issues. Research into gut health is very new, and no one fully knows what an “optimal” pattern of gut flora looks like yet. What researchers do know is that getting certain strains via food or supplements seems to affect flora — and overall health — in a positive way.

What About Supplements?

A lot of mamas are worried about supplements. Do you need them? If so, which ones? What brand? It gets really confusing, really quick.

First of all, take a deep breath. Supplements are not required for your child to be healthy. Sometimes they are helpful, particularly if you know there is a deficiency, but not everyone needs the same things.

Plus, not all supplements are actually good for you. Many are synthetic, and have mega-doses of certain nutrients, which could lead to an imbalance. (Read more about supplements HERE, and HERE.)

I don’t personally trust most of the mainstream, or even major ‘natural’ brands of supplements. I think they are a cannon-ball approach to the issue and are not really protecting health the way they should.

Instead, I recommend (and use):

Regular sunlight ( vitamin D) — best 10 – 15 min. right at midday

Magnesium lotion, about 1/2 tsp. on legs before bed (I use this one)

Dessicated liver pills, 1 – 2 per day, for iron, zinc, copper, and B vitamins (I use these, these, or make my own)

Herbal tea or herbal multivitamin, for basically everything else ( Nettle, dandelion leaf, or this)

We really don’t do much else. I occasionally add in some elderberry or mullein if we see sniffles. Astragalus root is our friend in the winter if we’re out and about a lot. We use echinacea from time to time, too.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Really.

What About Essential Oils and Kids?

I’m not a big fan of essential oils. I have a lot of them, actually, but I use them for specific purposes only. I don’t use them often with kids.

I do diffuse lavender or lemon sometimes — lemon often in the winter to kill germs in the air (and it’s kid-safe). Both of these are in our natural hand sanitizer too, which I use on all my toddlers and up.

I also use this rub when little ones can’t breathe well during colds, on toddlers and older.

I don’t use essential oils for general immune boosting. I don’t use them stronger than a 2% dilution with kids. I rarely use them topically. They are potent, and they are only some of the plant’s components — the fat-soluble ones. There are all kinds of important components in plants that aren’t found in the essential oil. That’s why I prefer to use whole herbs.

Some people do use essential oils with kids. Check out safe use guidelines so if you do want to use them, you’re doing it safely.

Bottom line? It’s really not that hard to keep your kids healthy. Love them, play with them, feed them well, and consider only truly safe, natural supplements (maybe).
