New OC Alert: Azarin & Iris

Azarin Brkić

Firefly Engineering Detachment Chief

Affiliation: Bozjan Resistance Ancestry: Half-Bozjan, Half-Dalmascan Helion Age: 37

Azarin is the leader of a Bozjan resistance engineering unit, the Fireflies; so called that because often all you can see are the sparks from their welding machines deep in the night. She works tirelessly in service of the Resistance, and previously found a close friend in Misija. Her betrayal shattered Aza, and in the aftermath she doubled her zeal for Bozjan independence, as she doesn't wish for anyone else to fall victim to the conflict.

She's a Bozjan Cannoneer (aka Machinist) and has a big fuck ass cannon called Frou because it makes that noise as it winds down after being used.

Her wife, Iris, is a former magitek artificer and they both love to reverse-engineer Garlean designs to work with aether. After Bozja and Dalmasca were freed she wished to travel and see the world. Lucky that Iris agreed.

Iris was once part of the IVth Imperial Legion under Menenius sas Lanatus. After an accident during a Bozjan ruins exploration, Iris was declared KIA, though a Firefly member found and delivered her near-dead self to his leader Azarin who took charge and made sure Iris received immediate medical attention.

Initially resistant to the Bozjans' hospitality, Iris refused to talk, until one day she realised that Azarin was attaching an aether converter to a magitek cannon (aka Frou). She corrected the Hrothgar's attempt and from then on, they became friends through their shared love of machinery and engineering.

Bereft of a homeland to return to, Iris threw her lot with the Resistance... and Azarin. They fell in love, and became a powerhouse of engineer couple, feared for their quick wit and ingenuity. After Bozja and Dalmasca were freed, she and Azarin made ready to travel the world, eager to finally enjoy peace and freedom that they'd been denied for so long.

I can't tell if you opted in to doing an FFXIV q&a or had it thrust upon you but while it's happening I figure I may as well ask something I haven't been able to find a clear answer on, if I install the free trial can I make a female Hrothgar or is that only for real girls

also unfortunately you can only play hrothgar and viera if you own the shadowbringers expansion which would mean you’d need to start paying a sub :( maybe someday they’ll add ShB to the free trial like they did with heavensward and stormblood tho!

until then, you can always download the dawntrail benchmark and play around with designing a hrothgal character at no charge ! but you wouldn’t be able to use her in game until 7.0 and until u had ShB! still fun though!

haven’t really played her much yet but you KNOW i had to make a hrothgal!!! her name is kalina avanya and she’s a helion who left home in order to train and see the world to make sure that she’s a fair, strong, and well-educated leader when she assumes her throne and becomes queen. she’s a white mage and a lesbian and her fiancée is a trans hrothgar 😌

I did the Benchmark and had fun making Kell and his mom (FINALLY!!!) and I love her so much. Hrothgals, my beloved.

First off, please admire my boy. He's my precious bean, i adore him <3 I kinda wish I could have done the Benchmark as Pictomancer for the hell of it, though.

Meet Nadezdha Sorrell, Kell's awesomely purple mom. I also love her. She would totally kick ass as a Viper and I might let that be a class she actually knows xD (OH COULD YOU IMAGINE IF KELL ACTUALLY GOT HIS JOBSTONE FROM HIS MOM???) I've been playing with the idea of her and Kell's dad originally being from Tural and I think that's probably going to be canon now.

I tried out the Anabaseios gear for her and those swords are shiny~

played thru 6.55, and a few thoughts;

item number 1, i love Wuk Lamat, i'm so happy with how hrothgals came out and she seems fun and is so cute, look at the dumb cat smile

item 2, i love that she and erenville know each other, but there is no way "erenville" is a name from south america lol. it's fine, i'll take the contrivance, they have a cute dynamic and i really like erenville. please more women and characters with any melanin, ty.

Point the third, i know i just said "please give me more women in the story" and I like Krile fine, but BOLD move to make room for her by having one of the most beloved characters step back.

like, it's good characterization for G'raha to have him volunteer to stay so Krile can go. he NEEDED to go on his adventures with the WoL when he first showed up, but he seems less insecure about that now. which is good, he's a multifaceted character, he is both the quiet dignity of his 300 years of wisdom and also "hehe, catboy fluffye," but he's also the best. and i love him. and i want my fluffye :(

point 4, pictomancy! ... looks cute. definitely not for Talia, that's viper and beastmaster, babey, but i'll probably try it on an alt someday

item the fifth, I'm cautiously optimistic for how they seem to be handling Tural. I'm Mexican, I don't have time to get into it, but I am hopeful in seeing what their take on un-colonized fantasy South America will be.

i'm not touching the discourse until i play the fucking expansion and see for myself. i've already seen people calling it "stormblood 2" which... okay? i didn't like base stormblood either, but we haven't played it yet. and base stormblood had redeeming qualities, and by the patches it was genuinely, unironically good. also it gave me Zenos. He might not be a good character, but what a character. Holy shit.

final thoughts, it looks like Thancred and Urianger are getting a competing offer to champion a different member of the Tural royal family, so that'll be a potentially very fun dynamic/rivalry, i'm excited for that. I trust they'll find a way to get Y'shtola over there too, and Estinien's involvement is shoehorned as always, but I like Estinien, so I don't care

i have 1 last thought, but it will be its own post, so yeah, cautiously optimistic

Oh, you are seriously overestimating how much time and effort I put into her. Or that I am going to play her at all.

I just decided to try out the looks of Hrothgal when the first benchmark released and that was the design I had landed on. I might use her as a design or basis if I want to make a secondary char on another server/region ... but also there is still a lot of stuff to do with mael.

Somehow TIMEY WHIMEY BALL Set right what went wrong because someone(Alexander/Tycoon/Omega/ pick one) was playing with time and an entire Allagan civilization(because someone else was playing with time and streams collide) got stuck in time!!!!

The original citizens can't leave their city but others can visit them

How advance is Allagan or Elpis past? Ghost in the shell - In view of the locked in time thing A bunch of Allagan had tried to replicate creation magic and cross the time streams and time lock happened. Allagan brains in biological shell (a la Doga nd Unei) to wake up later and see how world progress but the original citizens can't leave their city Garlemald had wanted to come here for their tech but Zenos happened

Young lady in white is key to this but is sealed in there. A Riona to seal Ultimecia?

What are the odds of Hylnyan going short Hrothgar(176-180 as with her OC Cat shpeshifter) for future town? Unconfirm if she's half Hrothgar or not on her father's side, mainly because she's already taller than the average Miqo'te.

Free Fantasia yes? maybe? Be taller than Thancred and start combing his hair like mother cat or something. To be the one carrying him instead This --> a Hrothgar NPC with a thing for Thancred and carrying him under her arm or slung over her shoulder because she can run faster than him. And they are fleeing from very big trouble Yeah I ship him with Miqo'te, Au Ra and Hrothgar women because he has a thing for tails.

Garlenmald rebuilding on the moon? Rebuilding civilization that Meteion destroyed? Help them makes sense of what had went down?

Pictomancer looks wicked cool but Hylnyan's weird aether is slower to effectively manifest for Pictormancer during MSQ. Main BRD-DRK dropping into GNB for solidarity

There was a conversation in my FC discord lately where everyone was like “I’m surprised you’re not making a hrothgal, Koko, you seemed the most excited about them out of all of us.” And I had to patiently explain to them that I am extremely excited for female hrothgar, but not to be one. I just really want my miqo’te to have one as a girlfriend.

Chatting about the benchmark! A very long post comparing my characters looks and such. This is mostly for myself to reference back on.

I'm really hype with this benchmark, however at least a couple characters need to be changed a bit for me- particularly my fem Au Ras.

Baatu looks pretty good imo! I can tell that Baatu's eyes are different. The color of the limbal ring is totally different and not as bright. His eyes are less open, his brows are closer to his eyes now. But his skin seems smoother and less aged which is good for him. Of course, I'll have to see if anything changes from now to release, I might have to mess around with some colors on him. [Left Benchmark, Right Old.]

Aoki looks about the same to me, just brighter eyes. I could critique and say his nose isn't as dark as before, but overall I like that he pretty much looks the same! I think it's to be expected for Viera as they are the newest race tho? [Left Benchmark, Right Old.]

Gaia and Shunbai look good. I would say Gaia looks even better than before. The mid range toned skin looks amazing. Shunbai might need a touch up with his red limbals tho.

Now come the fem Au Ra. Mitsuki and Yumi, both needed some tweaks though. The Eyes and lips were the most changed features that I noticed on them.

The scales on fem Raen are beautiful imo. They look opalescent which is perfect for my character Mitsuki. Their limbal rings however look off color and dull. Also, their face looked softer, but thankfully it is possible to change the eye and brows to look more RBF. [Left Benchmark, Right Old.]

Yumi looks pretty different, but it's not bad. I am very surprised by the lips as they are VERY different and not as full looking imo. Her features look better for how I imagine her, but because they are clearly with this update, I had to change her eyes and lips to better match my image of her. [Left Benchmark, Right Old. Oh yea and my Duskwight I never post about looks different. I noticed that face 1 was changed significantly. Thankfully, he is face 2, but I still changed his appearance quite a bit to ultimately make him look new. So Zylavor will be getting the biggest makeover! [Both Benchmark]

I've noticed that the darker skin looks SO beautiful. The shine and textures on mid to dark range skin tones are the best in the benchmark.

My sona Z looks a little less... defined? The liner around his eyes is lighter and his brows are lighter. His lips are also a different color and shape. I think they lightened the black color of hair quite a bit, which makes it looks a bit washed out. [Left Benchmark, Right Old.]

BUT NOW HROTHGALS!!! I am really having a lot of fun designing them and all their voices are really good!! Their starting gear is also super sick ;-; <3 I have saved this design, so I might make her...

Anyway, running the benchmark was good!

Unfortunately, I had to fork over another $10 to Fantasia my Hrothgal back to catgirl. Why? Because Square Enix clearly doesn't give a flying fuck about this race. From heads clipping to just gear looking straight up cheaply "resized" and "widened" just to "cover up the model" without any proper fitting.

Examples:

Any gear with sleeves looks like it was just "widened" for them. It makes it look like they have 2 heads on the side of their body because of how wide the shoulders end up being. Frequently the shoulder pauldrons of some armor just straight up clip into your face. My favorite Nier Raid accessory just straight up clips with most of their limited amount of hairs:

At this point she just looks like a Sattou character 🙄

Anyway was fun while it lasted (barely an hour since that's when my Fantasia hour expired) but until they fix all these problems I just cannot play this race. Most of my glams and plates look terrible on her. I loved all the emotes and the voice I chose but they clearly just half assed released this race. I shouldn't have to rely on mods to have it working. If you can't properly release a race then just don't release it. Should have just used that energy to give Viera 5 year overdue hats for fuck's sake. 💩

Alts I could make but won't:

Melle: Actually part of Canum's story and does 'exist' in ff14 for all intents and purposes, I just don't know if I'll make her her own toon. Well, I might, if Hrothgals are particularly atrocious (like au ra level dimorphism). Yes her hair IS that goddamn pink.

Gabriel/Grav: He's just one of those characters that I have so clearly in my head that he never looks 'right' in ff14, only close approximations. It would be easy enough to slide his og story into being a garlean reaper though, they definitely handed that to me on a silver platter, making Grav his voidsent thematically fits. Though admittedly Grav being Gabby's Fray is... maybe closer to the truth. Unfortunately I can't tank *wheeze*

Reaper: she never actually had a real name, I just thought of her as 'Reaper', but the job suits her still. Her voidsent would be a Grimm, just only, a terribly sweet golden retriever sort of dog. Does it make sense in ff14? No not really. Would I keep it just because? Yeah probably. The release of this facepaint just made me realize she was possible without mods, at least mostly.
