do you guys think that part of the reason Gideon’s death was so devastating to Harrow was that before then, there had at least been one person who survived the mass murder that created her? two hundred souls had been destroyed for her sake, but the annihilation wasn’t complete — there was one who escaped. one who lived. do you think Gideon dying, for the sake of Harrow living, snuffed out her one last glimmer of hope for absolution?

Wait, have we considered how fucking repulsed Harrow would/will be at the sight of Ianthe Naberius? Literally the antithesis of what she tried to do in HtN, making the empty shell of her cavalier a monument to her own ambition and an instrument of her power. Like hghhhhh. She disdained Babs in life, her only positive memory involving him was Gideon knocking him down, but if/when she sees him being used as some grotesque puppet I think she's going to blow a fucking gasket.

I do not now, nor have I ever, expected Gideon to take a principaled stance on the forever war. I just don't think it matters to her. Ostensibly she's on her dad's side because her dad has been on a parenting kick lately, and the best she ever got from her mum was goodbye with a stay of execution. But if she were confronted with the ethics of the situation? Asked her opinion? I don't think she'd have one. She may be a prince, but at heart she's still the abused eighteen year old girl who fought tooth and nail to join the army just for a way out

Ianthe is special bc she has finally achieved the perfect, beautiful, most annoying lovechild synthesis of "I was expecting a battle of wits but you appear to be unarmed" and "your mom suck me good and hard through my jorts"

okay okay so corona and ianthe's mother's name is canonically "violabeth" (whence "coronabeth" gains the "beth"). viola is latin/italian in origin, meaning purple; corona means crown or wreath. congrats, your third house monarch (whose assigned house colour is purple) is called purplebeth and crownbeth
but also! in pondering this, my mind was also drawn to viola from shakespeare's twelfth night - one half of a pair of twins, forced by circumstance to take on the guise of her brother for her own safety. we talk and talk abt who out of ianthe and corona came up w the "corona should pretend to be a necromancer" scheme, and also who enforced it; but is it not fucked up if it was violabeth? (especially considering ianthe specifies their father as the one who "wanted a matching set") and if it wasn't, isn't it still fucked up that, based on literature that existed before the houses, their mother's name is all but a prophecy?

i can't wait to see what will happen with the chekhovs gun that is harrows oath to ianthe but reading it back i think its interesting how a lot of the things she swears by don't really hold a lot of weight anymore?
"I swear by my mother; by the salt water; by that which lies dead and unbreathing in the Tomb; by the ripped and remade soul of Ortus Nigenad." (HtN p62)
im not sure about her mother and im iffy on the salt water (although technically she broke this tradition when she told Jod about how she was born without it) but there is definitely not anything dead or unbreathing in the tomb anymore and ortus' soul was neither ripped nor remade
i don't THINK this is where this plotpoint is going but. it's very fun to think about
