Aster is not "Star Boy" or the one Asha wishes on.

I feel like the name best suited them, because...well idk it just did for the design I was imagining at one point.

Also this one is like pretty old, like I am between 2,000 or more. Yee they have been around for a long time...

So why did this dude want to grant this random ass guy's wish? They really didn't have a choice to be frank. They were wished upon, they have to do their job, and they also were intriuged. Why did this dude want to defeat "The Great Magnifico"?

Also, Aster I dont think will appear nessesarily in "The Kingdom of Roses and Thorns" in the main story where Asha's story takes place. Only in like a possible prequal? Idk man I am just idea dumping

So STAR BOY does know of them, but not on a personal level. I feel like since he knows the story of Aster, he just wants to not have Asha fall down that path.

Yeah yk what? Eugene it is and he is Magnifico's younger brother who had to die. If Magnifico kills him...thats cool but idk if he has the guts at this point of his old life to kill his brother. Or his best friend? Rival? Idk but his name is now Eugene :/

Thats all I got, I am just EXPLORING and IDEA DUMPING. I am not saying that this is CANNON in my story, I'm just looking at other ways to destroy Magnifico and Amaya mentally :3

And now giving them a backstory is breaking my heart like my villains did not deserve this 😭

What is cannon though, is that Rosas was destroyed by a Star, or mainly the star helped do some mass murder on the whole place at least more than over a century ago. How they survived that long is by consuming wishes that gives them new life and live longer (yes I am adding onto what else the wishes do to them yipeee). Still debating if a wish is destroyed, the person dies, but idk yet :3

Funny enough, he doesn't use magic as much as he does now. He was very reclusive with his magic and only used it when nessesary. Never to kill people either....which is the completly the opposite of TKoRaT Maggy is now, same with Amaya :')

New Tangled Fanfic

Hello, Tangled fans.

Even though it has now been 4-and-a-half years since Tangled: The Series/Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure has ended, the show still has a big impact on the fandom. However, there has been one question that has been in my head since the show ended: What would happened if Cassandra didn’t reform? I had even made a post about it back in 2021. After some thinking, I decided to make a fanfic about that theory loosely based on the A Twisted Tale novels that are centered in alternative universes of the Disney films. I also thought that it would be fun to write an “what if” fanfic about a Disney show. However, it might take a while since I am still working on other fanfics, including the current Tangled fic, Varian and Vex: The Mystery of the Crystal Caves. So far, the title is called Tangled: Wither & Decay - A Twisted Fanfic and here is the summary:

What if Cassandra betrayed Rapunzel again?

Zhan Tiri has finally been defeated, the sundrop and moonstone have been united, and Corona is finally safe…at least that's what Rapunzel thought.

Out of nowhere, Cassandra managed to grab ahold of the infused opal and claim its power for herself! After a failed attempt to stop the fallen handmaiden gets them banished to a faraway land, Rapunzel, Eugene, and the gang must hurry back to the kingdom to save it from further destruction. During their journey, the group will learn even more about the magic that enhances the gemstone’s user and the consequences it holds in the wrong hands.

However, as time passes on, tensions rise between Rapunzel and her friends as the princess’s leadership is tested throughout not only their expedition, but for the future of Corona as well. Meanwhile, Cassandra plans on expanding her conquest towards the entire world.

Will Rapunzel stop her former friend before it’s too late?

After reading some posts (spesifically on the nature of magic by @felonytaxevasion and creature design by @lakesbian) and some other urban fantasy novels I have a bunch of ideas floating around about Pact and Pale that I want to explore via writing something

The core three ideas are:

The Magics meaning within the world

The History of the practice

And the people who wield the practice.

I should start out by saying I disagree with @felonytaxevasion's take that the magic is a metaphor about Family specifically and think its more about the systems we build as a society, although the "traditional family" is definitely one of them.

Although to a certain point I don't even think its a metaphor, the practice as it exists , is literally a man made system build by one guy 3000 years ago in a small corner of the world that has expanded and dominated the rest of the world forcing its rules onto everyone because no one can agree on a better solution. The Practitioner must literally agree to a social contract where they define themselves to the rest of the world that causes the speech and actions to be policed by the world around them.

Which is something I love about the Practice, its not a genetic magic system, but one anyone can sign up for. Aside from the unappealing eugenics of genetic magic systems, where some people are born "better", it also speaks a lot about generational determinism the idea that the next generation will naturally be better and more enlightened and that diversity is a new thing. In contrast in Pact and Pale the Practice has a weight of history behind it (hence the name), its grown from a stopgap measure to an oppressive beast that learns from previous generations and grows to encompass and control everything, much like practitioners themselves, and will continue to do so as long as its members are complacent. The practice will only change if it is actively fought, deliberately fixed and made to accept the Other (the diverse/minority group in this metaphor).

But these ideas are more than just metaphors. This is something I really like in Pale with Zed. Now I am cis, so obviously take this with a grain of salt, but the way the practice responds to a trans person, demanding he conform to the identity presented in his awakening and engaging with the struggle of being trans in a system that wasn't built to accept you, seems like a more sincere engagement with the trans experience than a magic a potion that changes your sex to match your gender, although from what @felonytaxevasion said it might also come down to weather or not you want escapism in your story or not.

But this gets into another part I want to talk about witch is the people of the practice. Being a practitioner, means willing participating in a system of exploitation and abuse, a system you strengthen just by signing up. Its not something you are, its something you do. I want to compare two other books to Pact and Pale to explore some ideas.

The first is "magic for liars" in it mages are something you are born as and when asked why mages didn't stop Hitler they say mage law and never bring it up again. In comparison in Pact and Pale practitioners fought in WW2 with Jude's great grandfather and Aimon Behaim getting injured fighting enemy practitioners. More than that practitioners have philosophy, from whole books on the philosophy of a discipline like Diabolism to the textbooks in Pale that (purposefully) read like they were written by someone who believes in the white mans burden. There s the weight of an ugly history to the Practice that makes it feel more real than other books.

I'm not sure what the thrust of this is but I really like Pact and Pale's magic systems and I love practioners in a strange way, there existence is like heartwarming but bad, a tragedy, but one of the status quo not disaster and i find that really compelling.

Enid Sinclair Werewolf Headcanons

Basic Understanding:

Strength: Enid is the physically strongest member of the squad (Bianca, Yoko, Xavier, Ajax, Eugene, Divina, and Wednesday) majority of the time she doesn’t get to show it as she has no interest in any form of fighting. Her muscles do expand a little more in her human body, more noticeable when she’s wearing sleeveless tops. She lands the designated jar opener of the group. Speed: While Yoko is still the fastest, Enid comes second (in human form.) She’s both a fast walker and fast runner - when she shares food with people, nobody sees how fast her swipes are from the bowl.   

Which is why sometimes she gets her own food bowl.

Endurance: Her athleticism is all thanks to both her love for moving and being a werewolf. Her cardio workouts have to be on the extreme end in order to make progress, like running in the woods in all fours for 5 hours straight instead of normal running. She spends all her energy to kpop dance tutorials. Noises: Growls, Grunts, whimpers, barks - They all exist in her vocabulary. Although she feels rather embarrassed whenever it slips up. Something about her emotions getting the best of her whenever one of those come out. Nobody in the squad teased her about it, lest they want to end up on Wednesday’s personally hit list. She whimpers a lot when watching horror movies.

Roomie Privileges: (These are special cases that only occur to Wednesday.)

Pets: Whenever Enid is in a particularly needy mood, she goes to Wednesday for pets. It could be on her hair, a rub on her back, the slight massage of the nape or even gentle scratches behind her ears. Enid patiently waited on Wednesday’s bed, scrolling on her phone mindlessly until the clicking of the typewriter comes to a halt. The blonde perked up as Wednesday sighs and move towards her. She didn’t hesitate to zoom in her head on Wednesday’s lap, looking up to those dead eyes.

“Same as last time?” Wednesday says stretching her fingers.

“Yep!” Enid’s eyes shutter to a gentle close. Cold fingers stroke and scratch her scalp, lulling her to a comfy nap. Scent Marking: Enid has subconsciously scent mark anything she and Wednesday have touched. From Wednesday’s blazer to her hand. For safety and her personal sanity she reasoned. Like to protect her from other furs. Then again, maybe it’s really because the furs needed to be protected from her instead.

“Enid. Hand it.” Wednesday crossed her arms. “I merely asked you to hold it for a minute.”

“Yeah I know but...” Enid looked down shyly. The blazer wrinkled under tightened hands. “It smelled uncomfortable!” Wednesday merely raised a brow. “... I am to assume you made it ‘smell comfortably?” Enid cringed. “Y-yeah?” Wednesday only blinked at her. She took the jacket and gave it a curious sniff. “Your cinnamon candles emanate a most nauseating scent, Enid.”

Enid perked up. She watched Wednesday slip it on with ease, straightened out perfectly well. “Suppose it’ll be efficient to strangle any passerby idiotic furs... Now, let’s return to the dorm. This ‘Bomb Time Haste’ show you speak of sounds torturous.” Enid’s smile reached to her ears. “Jeez, it’s Big Time Rush!” Biting: She gently bites or nips on Wednesday whether it be on her clothes or skin. It could be from a slew of reasons, but she mostly does it because she’s fond of her roommate. She bites the side of Wednesday’s hand usually not too hard but enough to leave a mark. On rare occasions, the collar of Wednesday’s clothes when they’re in the middle of some intense petting session. Enid took a deep breath while she leaned further into Wednesday. Her face to Wednesday’s neck as she practically laid on top of her. The pets from both her head and her back were driving her to bliss she’d never thought of having. To add on to it, their scent mixed together... “Enid, you’re biting.” Enid lazily opened an eye. She whimpered quietly. “I am not mad.” Wednesday sighed as Enid further dove onto her neck. A small huff and a grunt. “...It would seem I have spoiled you far too much recently.” Enid tightened her hold on Wednesday. More whimpers. “Don’t put words into my mouth. I simply said I have spoiled you.” Wednesday gently brushed her nape. “I did not say I’ll stop.”

Licking: Funny enough, it wasn’t Enid that started this habit. Rather a curious Wednesday. After studying more on werewolf culture, the goth learned licks from werewolves formed a way to calm down a pack member. Enid happened to be nervous for an upcoming test and well... “Wends! Did you just lick me?!” Enid’s voice rose to octaves she didn’t even know she could reach. Her wide eyes and a quick hand landed on the spot just below her ear. Wednesday merely nodded. “One of the encyclopedia’s of canine monsters mentions it is a therapeutic method: Heart rate returns to acceptable levels in a single lick.” “Actually I think cardiac arrest is far closer!” Enid huffs, “And that only works if we’re both werewolves!” Enid held her tongue when she saw Wednesday tighten her jaw. “W-wait you were researching...?” “Yes, for the past few days your distracting pacing around and whimpers during your studies have halted my writing time.” Enid processed the information as quick as she could. Before hastily standing up and putting Wednesday’s hand in hers. “You can be so sweet you know, that?” “I’ll skin you alive in your next wolf out, Sinclair.” There was no bite to it at all. Enid only smiled. “I’ll let you lick me... If you’re okay with me licking you?” Wednesday blinked. “I’m not a werewolf.” “And that didn’t stop you from licking me.” Enid teased. In the end, she gave a sigh. Wednesday’s space needs to be respected. “Okay - I get it you -” “You may.” Enid tilted her head to the side. “You may lick me, Enid.” There it is, another blinding smile. “Only in this room. Anywhere else, I will personally pack that wretched red bag of yours and hurl it at Yoko’s door. Are we clear?” Enid nods quickly and immediately leans in for a few licks on Wednesday’s cheek.

biopolitics was originally conceptualized by foucault in a series of lectures- the very simple explanation of it (which foucault scholars probably would feel doesn't do it justice) is that the state has a vested interest in creating citizens who are "healthy" (as defined by the state usually by military/work readiness) + reproducing more "healthy" citizens (in this way it often intersects with outright eugenics). people often refer to it as the politics of "making live + letting die" (necropolitics by achille mbembé is an incredible analysis of this second part, focused on colonial power's interest in determining who dies)

what this means is that, at its core, the state engages in programs to improve the "health" of the population not out of altruism but because it needs a supply of work-ready, combat-ready, reproduction-ready individuals. the concept of "health" is tied up in one's ability to perform labor in service of the state, so much so that disorder or the severity of disorder becomes defined by this ability. public health efforts center not on decreasing suffering but on restoring the population to a condition in which they can once again perform labor (including reproductive labor) + serve the greater needs of the state.

my friend cora at umadison did an excellent presentation on how the u.s evokes within "anti-obesity" campaigns a concern that "obesity" is a threat to military readiness. messaging concerning family planning/abortion are often engaged by the state to coerce certain ppl into having children + others NOT to, based on the idea of the Type of Citizen they want. on a deeper level, this haunts us from birth- were there programs to try to improve your mother's pregnancy? public school health surveys? scoliosis tests? presidential fitness tests? irt COVID-19, whose death was seen as acceptable + whose death was seen as worth preventing? was prioritizing a 'return to work ' an out-of-the-blue approach or a natural conclusion of a public health system structured around producing + maintaining a steady supply of labor? none of this is asserting that state public health intervention is inherently BAD, just that its core motivations are not altruistic but rather political (so it has no interest in expanding into a public health model where fitness to work/serve/birth is NOT seen as the marker of health).

a very cynical read of the opioid epidemic would be that the state is so heavily involved now because it is finally impacting individuals that they want to Make Live. harm reduction is reluctantly being adopted (thanks to the tireless work of incredible activists!) but only if it can fit into the framework of Making Them Live Until They Can Become Sober. sobriety is the unspoken end goal not because it reduces suffering but because it allows for workers. the truly liberatory logic of harm reduction, which focuses on autonomy + safety + reducing suffering, is antithetical to the motivations of a state which openly despises those who don't 'produce' proportionately to what they receive.

my interest is in reimagining medicine + the body + disability + suffering outside of this biopolitical framework by acknowledging that our very definitions of all of these things have been engraved in the public imagination with labor production in mind. i'm not interested in trying to create new state programs that are 'untouched' by biopolitics because that's impossible + i can still extract tangible benefits from it (for example, i got all my covid vaccines early + for free bcuz my labor was important enough for the state to invest in my life). the idea is to engage with these programs clear-eyed + willing to look at who we Make Live + who we Let Die. most importantly, we can find what lies outside it all + envision new ways of living

Headcanons - Hetalians Singing Opera

In case you haven't noticed before, I am both a Hetalia fan and an opera nerd. I played piano as a kid and sang for a couple years too, learned about a few operas as a teenager in my music history courses, and my adulthood Spotify library is probably 40% full opera recordings and 40% Broadway musicals. I'm way out of practice now, but I can still hit a high C if I try.

Naturally, since it's not happening in real life, I've allowed my imagination to be run over with imagining which Hetalians would sing what parts in all these operas I know. Some of them are very constant in what voice type I give them, whereas others vary. And of course, I do this with Broadway musicals too, but the women tend to sing lower there too.

So, what voice types do I headcanon for these Hetalians? Read below to find out!

Nyo!Canada - Soprano coloratura

Yes, I will address my bias right off the bat, my beloved (self-insert) muse is a soprano that can sing all those INSANELY high parts. Think the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann, Violetta in La Traviata, and of course Lucia di Laamermoor and Turandot.

Liechtenstein - Soprano (soubrette)

This sweet girl's range can vary from low to high, but I like giving her roles where she is indeed the sweet young woman entering adulthood. I'm thinking Zerlina from Don Giovanni or Liu from Turandot. I've also imagined her in trouser roles too, the Composer in Ariadne aux Naxos and Cherubino in Nozze di Figaro.

Czechia - Soprano as well, more background. I have imagined her as Sieglinde in Die Walkure.

Seychelles - Soprano as well, more background. She could sing a lot of soubrette roles like Liechtenstein, and I've also imagined her singing Aida.

Belarus - Mezzo soprano

I sometimes can't decide how high or how low Belarus should be able to sing. Sometimes she's a powerhouse dramatic soprano (Ariadne aux Naxos), sometimes she nails the trouser roles (Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier), but regardless she can take on a lead role like Suzanna in Nozze di Figaro no problem.

Belgium - Mezzo soprano, occasional leads but a lot of background characters. She would 100% sing Carmen.

Monaco - Mezzo soprano, occasional leads but a lot of background characters. She's my original Despina for Cosi Fan Tutte.

Ukraine - Mezzo soprano or alto, more of a background character.

Hungary - Alto, very much a background character. Basically, I've tried to imagine filling all 11 ladies roles in Die Walkure.

Veneziano - Tenor

One of our two lead tenors, he's singing all the roles Pavarrotti did. This should not be a surprise to anyone.

Lithuania - Tenor

This might be a surprise, but I like to think he's a tenor too. Along with my bias of having nyo!Canada sing the prima donna soprano roles, I like having Liet with her as the lead tenor. Also, Belarus refuses to sing anything where she and Liet have to be romantic.

Latvia - Tenor, but more minor roles at most.

Poland - Tenor, but more minor roles at most.

Romano - Baritone

Yes, he's a baritone, but with a higher range bordering tenor. He doesn't get all the leads like his brother does, but there are some gorgeous higher-range baritone roles that he would sing so well. He is 100% Figaro, nobody can take that character from him.

Switzerland - Baritone

Full disclaimer for pretty much ALL the baritones, I've been unable to decide over time what range they should be. Switzerland started as a lower baritone, before I incorporated other baritones that could sing lower, so nowadays he can sing higher roles. If he were to learn Russian, he'd be good at singing Eugene Onegin.

Germany - Baritone

Tends to be a mid-range baritone, sometimes lower or higher as needed. He's the main one where I've previously assigned roles to, before handing them off to another baritone as I've expanded the cast. At the moment, good examples for him are Count Almaviva in Nozze di Figaro or Enrico in Lucia di Laamermoor.

Spain - Bass baritone

Yeah, here's a hot take, Spain singing lower than Germany. To be completely fair, this is probably the range where they can sing the same notes, but it's a matter of the roles in the story. I like having Spain play those elder figures, sometimes a father, and they keep getting written as bass or bass baritones.

Also, it helps that he has brown hair and green eyes, so that he looks like a father figure to both our lead tenors above.

He has 100% fought with Romano over singing Escamillo in Carmen (he's a Spanish matador!), but I've also imagined him as Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Timur in Turandot, Don Bartolo in Nozze di Figaro & Barber of Seville, Wotan in the Ring Series, and Leporello in Don Giovanni.

Netherlands - Bass baritone

A newer addition to the cast, mainly because I needed a nation who could look like a father figure to sing Nabucco and Rigoletto.

Sweden - Bass

We need a bass singer somewhere, so Sweden's a newer addition to the cast. Once again, a lot of minor roles, though he'd do well as Dapertutto in The Tales of Hoffmann.

Tangled Fic Recommendation

Every so often I like to talk about a fanfiction I am reading and recommend it to people.

Today, I'm not only recommending one story, I am recommending an entire series.

23 stories in their series so far and counting. And there is still a lot more to come.

Not only has this author embarked on a thrilling rewrite of the series, they have written it so well that I am always eagerly awaiting the next part.

I am of course talking about the series on A03 starting with the fic: "Two Tangled Sisters" which begins with the premise that Cassandra was taken to the Tower before Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel and then subsequently cared for Rapunzel and became an older sister. The first fic shows them growing up in the Tower and then covers the Tangled movie, introducing Eugene and showing their adventure as Rapunzel and Eugene fall in love, alongside Cassandra who just wants to protect her little sister.

The series has expanded from there, following through with how Rapunzel and Cassandra adapt to Royal Life (because Arianna being the most awesome mum ever decides to adopt Cassandra too and she becomes a Princess of Corona). It is fascinating following their journey together, and the different paths Rapunzel and Cassandra take in this AU.

It continues into The Coronation, with Rapunzel getting her hair back, and then onto a rewrite of Season One, Two and now Three. I cannot talk much about it but each story written so far has something for everyone!

There is so much this series has given! To this day, the season finale for season 1 still hurts me.

I love the character progression all the characters go through: they all shine in this series!

As a Eugene fan, I cannot express my excitement enough as to his future role in this series! I am so excited for it!

And, despite the series being called Two Tangled Sisters, Eugene has a big role in the series and his and Rapunzel's relationship does take centre stage.

There are twists and turns and rewrites of episodes! An unexpected pairing for Cassandra that I did not expect to want but now its there I am rooting for them! Such great development of all the characters and it shows what a great author we have for this series, for them to be able to tell such great stories and make a pairing work.

This series is so much more than just a Cassandra series. It is so much more than that. It is one of the best rewrites I have ever encountered in my few years in the fandom. The author has done the impossible and, as a fan who wasn't fond of Cassandra to start with, this series has certainly helped me see Cassandra, even in canon, with a new light. I cannot wait to see how this series goes!

I urge anyone not to brush this series off, to give it a try. You do not have to read every story in the series. The core set of stories following the series are enough, and there are multiple side-stories that add a bit extra to the characters.

I urge people to give this series a chance, whether you are a Cassandra fan or not - this series has something for everyone. And this is a series I wouldn't have read myself if I hadn't given a chance - and the only reason I did was because of the daily updates. I am so glad I gave this series a chance. It is 100% worth it!

Now, for some of you here, it will be very obvious which author I am talking about with this fic recommendation.

Unfortunately, this author has been, in some aspects, ostracised by the fandom in a lot of places. It's got to a point they still do not feel comfortable on tumblr, and this, to me, is very sad, because @twotangledsisters is such a GREAT PERSON to interact with.

She has become one of my favourite people on this site. Her writing, her opinions, her art are absolutely fabulous, and yet, people block her, excluding her from being able to interact with their content all because of her love of Cassandra from Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure.

@twotangledsisters is not just a Cassandra fan. She is a New Dream fan too but has been excluded from a lot of New Dream spaces because of her love of Cassandra and that is absolutely heart-breaking, that someone who loves this show so much, cannot fully interact with the fandom simply because they love Cassandra. If someone reblogs a piece of New Dream art that she likes, she finds out she's blocked from the original poster's blog so cannot follow them or see their other New Dream content.

It is sad and horrible to find out the way she did that people have done this to her. And how some people sent her horrible messages, telling her she was not welcome in New Dream spaces, when she absolutely 100% is WELCOME.

@twotangledsisters has so much love and care and creativity she wants to share with everyone but now feels she cannot. I am thrilled that she continues to produce brilliant artwork for my own fics! I'm honestly astounded by what she has produced so far for my fic: The Lost Prince!

I would just like to say that I am loving “never asked me once about the wrong i did” so far! I was wondering, what compelled you to write such a fic focusing on the entire life of snafu?

The short answer: absolute brainrot.

The long answer: Snafu fascinated me the moment he popped up (thank u rami for my life). I really wanted to dig into his psyche, early life experiences that would have affected him, made him predisposed to psychological stress and his violent behavior during the war. As a hardcore sledgefu shipper, I also wanted to expand on his own feelings, past relationships, WHY he fell for Eugene, and all the reasons Eugene would love him back. Snafu has a hard time seeing his worth, and why anyone would love him (can we say “avoidant attachment” ten times fast). Here’s a little excerpt from the next chapter that highlights just that.

He pushes the selfish thought away, it only adding to the guilt that is tightening like a noose around his neck; it is easier for him to think that everyone in his life will be happy he is gone, glad to be rid of his twisted jokes and unnerving gaze; that he will fade out of their memory, the mention of his name leaving them with a sense of déjà vu that is quickly brushed away.

What are some ideas, elements of your worldbuilding, or plots you'd like to explore in rp, but haven't yet had a chance to?

Ooh, that's difficult. I'm pretty good at asking for what I want. That said, I have a very strong love for the idea of characters exploring K'war and experiencing it, whether as a kei or as something else, and while I have started some plots, threads, even tabletop games on the subject, I unfortunately have yet to get far with any. I like being the 'gm', if that makes sense, even if it's not actually a tabletop game, I love getting to work my worldbuilding and character building brain as hard as I can to pave the way for the other to explore freely and experience new things and have fun! It scratches the same itch as these world and character building asks I requested for my birthday. So, I suppose that's a sort of vague plot tendency I crave!

For specific worldbuilding aspects, I'd really love to dig into Midlands Kei religion and festivals. Midlands Kei refers to a wide set of technically-Imperials not as an empire but as a race/ethnicity without the actual imperialism and religious warfare that wrecked a lot of their culture. They are a race within the Imperial subspecies including the grasslands, southern mountains, and the capitol. Their cultural inspirations include a lot of Europe, not English, but Ukrainian, Irish, Welsh, even Armenian, and they worship deities of the wind primarily, but have a healthy admiration and following for all deities depending on the individual, Imperial and Sea faiths alike. They have more greenish skin tones, like Skrap.

In ancient times, they were actually more prominent than the reddish, sun-worshipping Imperials you think of now, due to their wider area of origin rather than the Imperials originally coming from a smaller, concentrated area, though Midlands kei population was always more sparse with small villages over a wide area, rather than densely populated cities like the Imperials. The Southern Imperials rose up and claimed the Midlands Kei as part of their culture, erased quite a bit, and then began slowly eradicating them over generations via eugenics ranging from subtle beauty standards to outright government action. That said, Midland Kei do persist and are present over a wide area even if in fewer numbers, and some of their bloodline have even made it into the royals. Many especially wealthy Imperials, especially royals, will act as if the Midlanders are fully gone and no longer exist/have fully integrated into the Imperials, a thing of the past. That is patently false, but they just kind of ignore it because it's inconvenient to their supremacy. They are the same subspecies, hence my calling them technically Imperial as that is the term for the land dwelling subspecies. That might change.

I have always had the Midlands kei exist as a history for the Imperials, but have only recently made a distinction between them and the Imperials, as originally I had the two sort of combined, but as my lore expanded, this no longer made sense. You may see mentions of Midland kei as Plains kei, or see me mention an Imperial has Plains ancestry, this is the same, as the Midland is full of, among other things, wide rolling plains and grassland hills.

Sorry that this topic is heavy, but your posts are always very well thought out and I value your insight and antipsych perspective. What are your thoughts on some countries (now possibly including canada) allowing medically-assisted euthanasia for young mentally ill people if they request it? There was a story recently about a belgian terror attack victim being euthanized at 23 at her request. I personally believe that committing suicide is a right that every person should have because I think that punishing suicide attempters is the worst thing you can do for them, and ultimately, it’s their life and they deserve ultimate autonomy over it. Not that I think suicide should be encouraged, either, and having a specific government-endorsed suicide program seems sort of bad…? Like euthanizing young people comes with a lot of ethical complications — but I don’t know how to express why it feels weird given my personal beliefs about suicide being a right. (additionally, it feels even weirder because I do support these types of programs for the elderly (although i know what an ethical minefield those are too)). What are your thoughts?

I have a lot of mixed thoughts about MAID (Medical assistance in dying) and also about what it means to consider suicide a right and in what ways I think that should play into mad organizing.

Firstly, I think the way that Canada's bill C-7 was written and the way it's being put into practice is just blatant eugenics. The rhetoric while legislators were debating and passing the bill made it clear the way they saw disabled lives as unworthy. In a context where many disabled people are forced to live in poverty, where treatment is often impossible to reach, where accessible affordable housing is often nonexistent, where the medical system is filled with ableism and stigma--it is incredibly fucked up to add suicide as an option on the table when there are so many coercive factors at play. Instead of working to make society more accessible and do things that improve the quality of life of disabled people of any age, the government and doctors are using MAID as a way to completely ignore structural ableism and spread narratives that disabled lives are not worth living. I am incredibly, incredibly infuriated about the way MAID was expanded in Canada. I would recommend that people check out the amazing work of the Disability Fillibuster to learn more about MAID in Canada.

Although I don't think every instance of MAID is inherently unethical, I am VERY wary of any bills that expand MAID like Bill C7 because I think that in the context of an ableist society that already doesn't consider disabled lives worth living and tells marginalized people every day millions of reasons why they wish we were dead, MAID bills will come with dangerous levels of coercion that cannot be safeguarded against. For example, the American medical system, with a long history of eugenic sterilization, medical experimentation on Black Americans, and widespread institutionalization, is not a system I ever trust to be able to handle the power of MAID without treating marginalized people's lives as disposable. (Link to read more about the history of medical experimentation: content warning for antiblack racism, sexual exploitation, slavery, and medical abuse of many types. )

At the same time, I am deeply invested in noncarceral approaches to suicide, and I believe that in order to effectively fight against psychiatric incarceration, we have to expand our understanding of the right to autonomy. The psych system, like many institutions of total control, weaponizes a fake concept of safety to justify depriving people of autonomy. In the context of prison abolition, Mariame Kaba and Andrea J. Ritchie use the phrase "carceral safety" to talk about the ways that police use the rhetoric of "safety" to continue perpetuating a violent system of incarceration:

"The state’s carceral safety robs our communities of the conditions and nutrients that would allow true safety to grow, forcing us into the position of constantly reaching for more security from the very institutions that make us collectively less safe." (from Reclaiming Safety, August 2022).

Similarly to police and prisons, the psych system wants us as mentally ill people to believe that the only way safety and suicide prevention can occur is within institutions where autonomy is deprioritized and any kind of abuse is acceptable if it can be explained as a "life-saving" measure. So part of noncarceral suicide prevention involves rethinking the way we think about autonomy, and prioritizing autonomy and freedom as inherent rights, regardless if people are making risky or harmful choices about their own wellbeing. Suicide should never be criminalized and I think that a step towards decarcerating suicide requires us to embrace the importance of autonomy.

Rethinking autonomy to include the right to harm ourselves is something that I think is an important topic to grapple with in noncarceral suicide prevention, but I think it's one we also have to be careful with and approach with a lot of nuance when talking about it publically. Approaching suicide prevention with a bodily autonomy framework does not mean that we need to support government-sanctioned suicide, does not mean we need to advocate for eugenic policies, does not mean that we should advocate suicide for marginalized people who are already so used to being told that the world wants them dead. Suicide prevention is incredibly important to me, and it will never feel liberatory to me if I'm using my understanding of bodily autonomy to promote suicide in any way. Liberatory suicide prevention includes more than just noncarceral crisis response and helping people map through their distress. It also includes advocating for the material conditions we need to survive in our everyday life, and in my mind, that includes things like advocating for disabled people to have our basic needs met so that we don't have to live in poverty, inaccessible housing, and aren't coerced into suicide through eugenicist bills like Bill C7 in Canada.

Definitely think there is a LOT more to say on this topic and that my opinion is not the only way of looking at this, so I absolutely encourage followers to jump into the discussion.

I'm excited for everyone to meet Marc, and appalled at his situation, and still very aware that everything I do to this broke-ass website is built on sand. Mixed emotions!

Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to fix social issues with eugenics! We still do this! We're a bit more subtle about it, but we do it! I was naturally disposed to be "one of the smart ones," so I got thrown in a class with more people like me, and we got more resources and higher expectations! Then, later, I was naturally disposed to be one of the loser, burn-outs, and I got thrown in a class with more people like me, and we got fewer resources - but lots more supervision! - and lower expectations! Except then they decided I was smart again, and then dumb again, and now Capitalism and I don't have much to say to each other. I need money to eat, but I'm not worth any. All things considered, I haven't earned a place here. I'm a burden! Some people would like to be rid of me!

And sometimes those people have really fun ideas about how to be rid of me. Sometimes allowing me to exist at the edges, as long as I figure some way to get by, just isn't enough, ya know? There's a little bit of that folded into this as, if you'll recall, immies are as many of us at once as possible. We do try to train the children to be a little more convenient when their way of being is inconvenient - not just the autistic ones, but it's still considered a legit "treatment" for them, and a few others. And psychosurgery is not that far in the past!

It's not fixing the social issues in my story any better than it works IRL, of course. They've just created entirely new ways of being divergent that are no easier to control. ...Except maybe that last guy on the sheet, the smoke, but we'll deal with that later.

I needed something happy to mitigate the horror, so I got to write a tiny short story for the NDA to find. It's hard to keep pushing to heal from damage someone inflicted on you, sometimes it's hard to even figure out what "healing" means, but it helps to keep trying. You do pick up a few wonderful things when you keep trying.

I want to write what really happened to him, for continuity reasons, but I'm still murky on the circumstances of the reveal. I'm pretty sure I know who'll help out, but not exactly how. Broken is just the beginning!

(Man, I dodged several bullets with David, by putting off writing his past for so long. I managed to connect all the dots! Even if you'll probably never get the whole truth out of him. I could tell you if I had to. For now, only the spouse knows!)

Marc would not be happy with the NDA taking Erik home, but he also wouldn't be happy with how Erik ended up helping the RA. He'll have to reconcile on his own time, but I think he'll manage. For now, at least he gets to register an objection, even if he may issue a partial retraction later. I think he's justified. I'm still gonna send Erik home, but Marc's not wrong.

I prrrobaby should've made Marc a girl, just for gender diversity in pathetic, lovable characters, but I like my men pitiful and damaged and my women competent but conflicted. (You can tell!) I can only self-correct so much. And, in this case, Erik's not into boys, so that prevents things from getting to complex on my end. The romantic entanglements are gonna be bad enough as it is!

-Axel is one of Zoey's best friends, Zoey sees Axel as something of an older sibling that she looks up to.

-Axel is a bit of a ass on the outside, he's irritable, cranky, doesn't like to talk about his emotions a lot of the time, and is just really hard to get through to as you have to really put in the effort to get through to him. But deep down, he's a big loving teddy bear.

-He cares immensely about his loved ones, it's just that he doesn't show it outwardly & uses his bad temper as a way to manage with his emotions. He's a good hearted soul, just one that's got a lot of thorns covering it.

-Oh also, he's REALLY good at punching, he's able to punch hard enough to shatter boulders & tree trunks.

-He's got a very thick new zealand accent

-My headcanon voice for him is just Hypnopotamus from ROTTMNT

-He's big into cars, he's an incredibly skilled (but wreckless & with a bit of a daredevil attitude who, when given the option, WILL take the most dangerous & death defying path entirely because he just loves the pure addrenaline fueled rush of doing some fucking holy-shit-you're-a-fucking-menace-behind-the-wheel level tricks) driver who knows damn well how to function behind the wheel of anything on wheels, does he do boats and aircrafts too? Eh, not so much. Especially boats, he thinks boats are lame.

Geto Suguru from JJK. I came for the hot Asian guy with long hair and a cool outfit stayed bc I'm interested in how cults and eugenics hurt ppl irl and also how they're explored in fiction. But between heaven and earth I alone am trying to find a fic that actually treats him being a cult leader as the problem it is and also gets fucking Nanako and Mimiko out of their. Uhhh fuck idk if u know JJK so spoilery ranting under the read more that assumes familiarity (so not like. Explaining specific plot shit bc my brain will explode)

so basically ppl have called out the eugenics shit with like "kill everyone who isn't a sorcerer" and generally they're like yeah that sucks but whatever not important lol. And I've seen like 0 shit actually about how he's a cult leader + how cults are Abusive. And some ppl are like "actually he has a point bc blah blah blah" like okay. If sorcerers were a stand in/comparable to real life marginalized groups. WE DONT NEED MORE "MARGINALIZED EUGENICIST" PLOTS. But even within the story they don't seem marginalized? Like, there are Marginalized Sorcerers, but being a Sorcerer isn't something that's consistently oppressed? The closest thing is either misdirected ableism/sanism ("they see things that aren't there and are assumed to be psychotic" which is its own can of worms) or like accusations of witchcraft which... I guess that's sorcerery based on this universe but irl those were usually used either along with or as cover for other shit (racism, misogyny, land grabs, etc). So hes not necessarily marginalized on that level- tho growing up in a family without other sorcerers mightve caused problems for him that's a LOT different from systemic oppression. And, also? In a lot of cases it seems like sorcerers are relatively privileged with a lot of economic, social and maybe political power? Like the big three families are obv examples bc they're fucking Rich and control the sorcery world so. Y'know. Also it's stated at one point sorcerers receive some like exceptions to the law but aren't allowed to hurt ppl who aren't sorcerers so. Yeag

anyways going more in depth on eugenics- okay real quick terms: negative and positive eugenics. That's not in reference to the quality, "positive" doesn't mean "good" But Rather in reference to wether the action is meant to Reduce "bad genes" or Increase "good genes". And obv negative eugenics includes shit like forced sterilization and murder which I don't want to downplay, but positive eugenics is also coercive and fucked up. For example, forcing ppl to have children they don't want. Which isn't Discussed in the series, but the fact is sorcerers a SMALL minority of the population, and they're already having trouble with curses, so. Theoretically sorcerers would be coerced to have more children to bring the population numbers up. Personally I think that's Not Something Suguru Believes In (I'll get into that but main thing is his eugenics isn't an actual strategy but rather lashing out and ego) but like. There's abuse on both sides of the equation no matter what. Eugenics isn't fucking redeemable.

Now onto the cult shit. It's not super expanded on besides needing money and curses to like. Kill ppl or whatever. But my interpretation of Suguru is that he started a cult, and believes in eugenics, because his ego was damaged. Like the trauma impacted him and influenced his actions ofc bc trauma Does That but also I straight up think his ego was bruised and he wants revenge.

Like first of all, the wider context- he's a kid who is alienated from his parents and probably most of the ppl he interacted with due to his abilities, which is understandably damaging esp at a young age.

He is then scouted and labeled as a special grade- he is one of three in Japan and I believe the world, if I'm not misremembering. He is on par with Gojo Satoru (category wise) who. Literally "Gojo Satoru's birth changed the world" like that's a NUTS ego boost to get

Anyway Gojo called the two of them "the strongest" literally pairing them up and positioning them as equals so like. Whoo boy. Also special grade sorcerer is defined as "a sorcerer who could single-handedly take down a nation" which okay! Labeling children as essentially weapons of mass destruction. Normal behavior

Then Toji happens and this random fucking guy beats you up. He kills your best friend and the girl you were escorting. But he doesn't kill you- because of your cursed technique being risky to deal with, but also. Obvious subtext of "you aren't important enough to kill"

Then your friend comes back from the fucking dead. Kills the man who tried to kill him. Discovers entirely me abilities and becomes even more powerful. And you are stagnating, with a technique you fucking hate. Your entire power is the power of Other Things.

So like. Understandly, thought maybe not justifiably, your ego is fucked.

So you start creating a new dichotomy: sorcerers and everyone else. If everyone else is lesser, you still have worth because you're Better than them by virtue of existing.

And then you discover 2 children being abused for the thing you have a victim complex over (<- this is also it's own thing I'll talk about) and you murder a bunch of ppl about it (okay this is a little questionable of My Opinions maybe but I could. Not forgive but understand the mass murder bc there's a lot of shit building up and clearly if 2 young girls being badly abused in a small village that implies the majority of people were either okay with it or unwilling to try and help at all. Anyway it's still Bad but like. Understandble mental breakdown trauma kinda bad for me? Also bc most ppl irl recognize murder as being Bad but are Weirdly Forgiving of bigotry yknow)

Anyway you take over the cult that was doing some other shit and my personal interpretation of this is also an ego thing. Bc lots of cult leaders do it for the money, but a lot of them also do it bc they like the feeling of controlling ppl. And there's essentially 2 levels of the cult- everyday people and the people he considers Family (which includes Mimiko and Nanako, the 2 children from the paragraph above).

On the "everyday people" level, there's a feeling of being a revered religious leader, knowing something they don't (curses exist), and the satisfaction of taking advantage of the people you don't like.

On the Family level, you position yourself as a savior and as The Only One Brave Enough To Do What Must Be Done (eugenics genocide) so even if you aren't the strongest you're still Special.

So that's my main analysis of why he became a cult leader, and now I'm gonna make more comments about why I think his shit is "Ego" rather than a (fucked up) desire to actually help ppl

If you wanted to help sorcerers survive: THE CLANS ARE A MASSIVE FUCKING PROBLEM. They hoard techniques tools and knowledge and the Zen'in clan literally cast out Toji who could've been a fuckin BEAST at dealing with curses. The clans reliance of tradition also generally hinders sorcerers ability to grow and improve in ways that aren't Traditional

When he dies the cult falls apart (which: good) but also the members have different ideals like some of them wanna keep doing eugenics, some of them just wanted Suguru to be powerful, and two of them were basically his adopted kids. If you actually had good intentions: CREATE A PLAN FOR WHEN YOU DIE SO YOUR FOLLOWERS CAN ACTUALLY CARRY OUT YOUR WILL AND HELP PEOPLE INSTEAD OF LETTING THEM INFIGHT

And idk if this is totally Ego or starting to move into a separate thing so I just decided to split it up: even when he was "righteous" his beliefs kinda Sucked

Like "the strong must protect the weak". There are inherent sort of... values being placed there, because weak is negative, not neutral. It's relatively minor, but I think it's important to note with how his beliefs evolve.

It's not like "we need to protect the people who can't protect themselves" it's really reductive. There's weak people and strong people and basically Noblisse Oblige but for strength or whatever which isn't really actual kindness or equality but rather pretty much. Pity.

Also he sorts jujutsu sorcerers into "strong" and everyone else into "weak" for the most part so that's... great worldview my guy. Definitely not going to just worsen your alienation from other ppl

so when he goes to "why should the strong protect the weak?" He jumps to "the strong don't owe anything to the weak, and actually the weak should be Punished For Being Weak" instead of. Just doing something else. Just get a fucking job, my guy

Anyway his plan is just garbage top to bottom total mess morally and logistically and he's a traumatized teen who grew into an abuser and like. The trauma influenced that but there were always fucking problems so it isn't "oh he got hurt and is evil :(" it's "he has some worrying beliefs and his trauma is likely making his emotions and ability to reason unstable, and then he finds an excuse to turn that instability into Violence" like. He's not necessarily abusive bc he's mentally ill or traumatized marginalized he's abusive bc he got to a point in his life where he could justify it to himself and it felt Good

And I just remembered this part: for the characters who interact with him I do enjoy that they still like and love him, even though he fucking sucks, because that's very human. You'll love imperfect people, you'll love horrible ppl who hurt you and/or others, and that isn't irredeemable it's just Human because being a Human and Connecting With Humans is complicated like that

I even like it when they excuse his bad behavior! Bc that's a realistic character flaw, to value the person u consider your friend over the people they hurt! It's not ethical, but it's natural and interesting to explore in fiction.

THE PROBLEM. IS WHEN THE AUTHORS DO NOT TREAT OR ACKNOWLEDGE IT AS A PROBLEM.

Like... listen. Love a relationship where one character sucks and the other character forgives them for the ppl they hurt and just wants their loved one back. The problem is when the writers are like "aww this is so sweet/romantic/beautiful" WHATEVER. Because it's not??

Someone defending their fucking abusive partner/friend/family member, especially when they aren't victims themselves, isn't fucking sweet it's scary, either for them or others!!!! And I want either to see the characters grapple with the way they excuse their loved ones' abuses and how that reflects on them and their morals, or, if the characters don't do that, for the author to acknowledge it as A Flaw!!!! I'd that too much to fucking ask

Especially with cult abuse, I don't want to say it's necessarily treated worse than any other type of abuse, but it feels really hard to find things related to fictional cults that actually acknowledge the Real Life Damage and Abuse cults do instead of having the cult be 1. Faceless evil 2. A joke 3. Fetishized/romanticized. And like all forms of abuse are similarly distorted in media + fiction, but I feel like ive almost never seen cult abuse portrayed respectfully/accurately, especially in fan works

Anyways for the wild TL;DR I think Geto Suguru's personality is comparable to an anti-sjw trans guy who is getting scarily close to Actual Fascist beliefs and is hurting all the people around him and his ex mutuals are like "he's not that bad" when he is That Bad and I'm so fucking mad about what happened to Nanako and Mimiko. If I think about their canon treatment I get so upset I start to have a headache
