Smegtober #16: Future

     “No.”

     “Look, Lister–”

     “Sir–”

     “C'mon, buddy–”

     “No, absolutely not! The fact you're all even considering it is crazy!”

     Though that, perhaps, wasn't far off. They'd definitely gone a bit crazy over the past few years, cooped up on Starbug. Stir crazy, space crazy, likely some combination of the two. Tensions frayed more than ever before, Rimmer's temper erupted with growing frequency, The Cat had practically reverted to his early day habits of slinking off alone, away from the group like a stray–as much as one could on a vessel as cramped as this, and Kryten fretted and hovered with an energy bordering on obsessive.

     It's your fault, whispered a small part of Lister's mind he was forced to push down more and more frequently these days. After the accident when they found the time drive, Lister was no longer able to take shifts in the cockpit, no longer able to go along on derelict raids (and neither was Kryten, who was adamant about staying to look after him), no longer able to do much of anything. He regretted any callousness he showed Rimmer before the hologram had become hardlight; he now could empathize with the feelings of helplessness and frustration that came from the lack of a body. Perhaps that's why it was Rimmer waiting to explain things to him once he regained consciousness. That, or Kryten was too hysterical and The Cat would never be an ideal candidate to break bad news.

     But despite that, now that they recently found a faster-than-light drive on board another ship and got it running, the other three had turned to him as the last word on this proposal, even though they all seemed set on convincing him.

     “It's not like we're going to be dining with Adolf and Eva!” Rimmer exclaimed.

     “No, but it'll be close! In some court of Elizabeth where they'll be looking down on the rest of the country and saying, ‘Let them eat cake.’”

     “Wrong royals, Listy.”

     “The attitude's the same though, eh? I thought you learned that after your 600 years by yourself–selves.”

     Rimmer grimaced, but it was The Cat who continued. “You don't have to worry about taking care of a body anymore, man, you already lost yours. But what about me? I've still got to eat. Some of my favorite suits are getting baggy, and that is a greater tragedy than anything they’ve done.”

     “I'm afraid, Mister Lister, that the recent raids haven't provided much in the way of a food supply.”

     “Haven't provided much of anything, really,” Rimmer cut in. “The faster-than-light drive we found was a miracle, as well as the only useful thing we've come across in ages.”

     Lister did notice then, through the optical equipment to which Kryten had hooked him up, that Cat's jacket was hanging a little loose, that the outfit itself was not as pristine as it would have been in years past. There were deeper lines in Rimmer's face, some slight graying along his temples. Kryten looked the same, but he could guess that the stress and effort of their time on Starbug (of caring for Lister) had taken its toll on his internal wiring.

     “So we're going to go up to some crazed dictator for help? That's the solution?”

     “What would you have us do? Go up to some peasants’ hut, knock on the door and say, ‘Sorry there, miladdo, we know you're starving and probably dying of the plague but could you spare us some fresh fish?’”

     “What about a later time, our time?”

     Kryten and Rimmer shifted uncomfortably. The former replied, “It might be best, sir, to try to avoid a time when JMC and Diva Droid are operational. Not to mention that, in such times, we'd have more advantages.”

      “Technological?” If Lister could, he'd sit up straighter. “Are we gonna threaten to blast people out of existence?”

      “No!” Rimmer replied hastily. “...Not unless we really had to. But–” he continued quickly before Lister could speak up again– “we were thinking more along the lines of financially.”

      “Turns out some of my shiny things mean a lot to some of those old monkeys.” Another warning sign. The fact that Cat was open to the idea of trading away some of his stash of trinkets meant things were dire.

     “And materials for new clothes. I haven't been able to make a new vest in years and that is way too long!”

     “They could buy us food, good food, something other than weevil and moss.” Taking in Rimmer's look of longing, Lister wondered, under these circumstances, if he had eaten anything recently. He didn't need to, but now had the ability to. And he knew, from the incident when they'd swapped bodies, how desperate he could get to sate his hunger.

     “Yeah, food and cloth only possible through the suffering of the people under them.”

     “Was our period any different, Lister?” Rimmer shot back. “You think some of your t-shirts didn't come from people slaving away in some sweatshop on Titan? Do you think JMC was a humanitarian effort? Of course not! That didn't stop you from buying those shirts or working for this company. You benefited from that, and we can do the same thing now. Or would you rather we wither away here in this crowded scrapheap?”

     If Lister still had a face, it'd be twisted in disgust. Not just towards Rimmer, but towards himself: a bit of him could see a logic behind what he said. “What about you, Kryten?” He turned to the mechanoid for some support.

     “Mister Lister, you know that I'm programmed–”

     “Don't give me that ‘programming’ smeg, Krytes; you've broken from it for years now.”

     Kryten, with the decency to look apologetic, said, “Human morality is a very fluid thing, sir. What was permitted one century becomes reprehensible in the next. We can't change that, but we can do what's best for the crew.”

     “Exactly! I don't care what your dozen-greats grandparents did, bud. I hate to say it, but I agree with Goalpost Head.” They all agreed: a rare thing to see from them, especially these days.

     Lister, who always thought he was a decent man, who thought he could do the right thing, felt something in him relent. If he didn't, he'd have to live with the guilt as his crew–his friends–wasted away, and that was something he didn't think he could endure. Taking a first step into their new future, Lister agreed. It's not the worst thing they could do, the most immoral people they could turn to. Of course, they knew better than that.

"You know you never did tell me your name," you took a seat at the table. The stool was to high so your legs dangled over the floor, and the metal backing could use just a bit more support. Ok so it wasn't the comfiest chair. "Why not sit at the other table?" You suggested, wanting to move to the better wooden chairs. (Despite how hard those are going to be.)

"Shut up," he growls, "talk too much." The grumpy blonde shovels food into his mouth, chewing in the silence.

"Was just trying to be polite, and the seats are a little uncomfortable," you mumbled.

"You're wearing my clothes," he gestured to your outfit. Your hair was still damp so it left wet trails on the back of his shirt. "You're eating my food," he gestured to the dish in front of you- already half eaten. "You're staying in my house, in one of my rooms and now you want to decide where we eat."

Well gee mister not anymore, "I never asked to stay with you."

"You were freezing your fucking ass out there!"

"Ok and?"

"Don't be a dumbass," he shoveled more food into his mouth. More silence as the both of you ate.

"You're a good cook," you complimented. A water droplet fell from a strand of baby hair at the bottom of your skull, rolling beneath the collar of the black shirt. You shivered.

He noticed.

"Are you done eating as well?" You were standing next to him, shorter due to the tall ass stool. Your hip was pressed up against the table, plate in hand to take to the sink.

"I'll do the dishes," he rose from his place.

"No it's fine, I've already taken a lot from you." You snatched the plate up from him, moving to the sink to clean them. Another shiver from you, just before the water turned on.

"You're cold."

"It's ok."

You placed the dishes in the rack to dry, just as you turned around something slammed into your face. "Hoodie, so you don't freeze your ass." Black and orange with a large graphic on the center of it. "Rooms down the hall and 'cross from the bathroom." He was already leaving to call it a night. "Go the fuck to sleep."

When morning came you had hoped to sneak out under his radar however he was already up. "Good morning," you smiled from were the hallway bled into the kitchen.

He grunted not even sparing a glance at you as he cooked the eggs. There was an open carton next to the stove, four of the eggs already missing. Freshly cut chives left on a cutting board, accompanied by diced bell peppers and onion. "What are you making," you glanced over at the seasoning he had open. The flavors would be considered bland in your household but you assumed the vegetables were to make up for that.

"Breakfast," he grunted.

"Wonderful conversationalist," you rolled your eyes at his back. "I'll be leaving so.."

"You're not gonna eat."

"You seem like I'm bothering you, leaving just made sense."

"It's too fucking early for talking, I woke up and my room was fucking cold, and now that you're up too the place fuckin' smells like you." He plates an omelet setting it aside and checking whatever is sizzling in the oven.

"I'm sorry, do I stink?" You lifted an arm to smell yourself, you seemed fine.

"Are you a fuckin' idoit? Dumbass," he kissed his teeth. "You have a scent, everyone does."

"I know that-"

He pointed to the dog tag dangling from his neck, "are the dots connecting?"

"Do I really smell that bad," your brows drooped to make a sad face.

He sighs taking the baking sheet out of the oven, and plating another omelet. "No," more smells mingle in the kitchen. Bacon and quartered potatoes, it's like some sort of Disney breakfast. "Eat and then I'll take you home."

"Thank you," you look down at your food. It's quite beautiful actually, everything is proportionate and none of the flavors are too overpowering. "Bakugo."

He looks up at you, head moving so quickly it startles you. Carmine eyes glare with such an intensity it makes fireworks in your brain.

You swallow, "your tag."

He glances down at the engraved name. Another grunt from the ash blonde, "and you?"

"Oh..."

Groaning as my 2:30am alarm blares in my ear I turn to hit snooze when I remember I'm going to see Lando. He awakens a completely new side to me, the thought of seeing him makes me feel like I have a school girl crush except this time he's actually my boyfriend.

There's a spring in my step as I do my hair and makeup, I'm so excited to see Lando after two weeks the fact his parents are there doesn't even cross my mind. Pulling on a plain white body suit and blue jeans I decide to keep my outfit simple, remembering the orange underwear Lando so desperately wants me to wear. Making sure I have the essentials I throw everything into my bag I'll need for my day trip to the Netherlands; passport, phone, charger, lip stick, vape and bank card. I've never got on a plane travelling this light but seeing Lando is going to be worth it.

Arriving at Manchester airport a short while later I find a space in the short stay car park before making my way straight to security. I get patted down by security after setting the machines off as I always do and make my way for a coffee, this morning requires a lot of caffeine for what I know is going to be a long day. I have a nervousness about me today and I don't know why. I'm sure Lando will want to see me especially after our conversations but there's always that what if at the back of my mind that he doesn't want me there at the same time as his family. Any doubt I have I need to put at the back of my mind seen as it's time to board my flight. There's no going back now.

Less than two hours later I'm stepping off the plane in a sunny Amsterdam, it takes forever to get out of the airport but thankfully my dad has sent a car for me to be picked up and taken to the track. I send my dad a quick text to let him know I've landed and to thank him for arranging the car. Throughout the hour long journey to the track following a quick nap, I use my dad and Chelsea to keep me updated as to Lando's whereabouts, for me to pull this off I can't let him see me arrive at the track. Thanking my driver I meet Chelsea at the front of the paddock to collect my pass.

"Don't worry Lando's on track doing an interview with Sky. If you're quick we can get to your dad before he comes back" Chelsea explains as we power walk through the paddock.

"Thanks Chelsea, I thought this would be ruined when I got stuck in airport queues and then traffic getting here"

"You sound like you need coffee" as we reach Aston Martin Chelsea sneaks me in leaving me to speak to my dad while she gets me a coffee.

"Hi papá thanks for helping me pull this off" I say hugging my dad "Well done on starting 7th, I'm a proud daughter as always"

"But an even prouder girlfriend this week?" My dad asks smirking. I like how he's not trying to make me pick between him and Lando.

"I'm both this weekend papá" I'm grateful in a sense that my dad and Lando aren't directly competing with each other, there's no way I could choose between them. Grabbing myself a quick breakfast I thank Chelsea for the strong coffee she places in front of me.

"What's the plan? How are you surprising Lando?" Chelsea asks sitting with me away from everyone.

"I have two plans, I'm either going to sneak into McLaren's hospitality before the drivers parade or wait until after the race and just turn up to see him" knowing Lando, I know he won't expect me to be here. We've been texting back and forth already this morning and he has showed no sign of knowing I'm in the Netherlands.

"Honestly Lucía regardless of what you do, he's going to be so happy you're here. Everyone who knows the two of you can see you're obsessed with each other, you have been since Silverstone. I think you could quite possibly be the best thing to happen to each other" taking in what Chelsea is saying she could be right well for me anyway, I can't speak for Lando.

An hour or so later it's nearly time for the drivers parade, my dad has already made his way to the track for an interview before he gets on the truck so I'm stood with Chelsea. Out the corner of my eye in the distance I see Lando being interviewed by one of the F1 TV hosts. From her body language I can tell she is trying to flirt with him, I say flirt because he isn't biting. Every time she tries to touch his arm or his shoulder he moves himself away in which she follows. The more I watch her, the more wound up I get.

"Chels please tell me I'm not seeing things. Is that bitch trying to flirt with Lando?" I ask just to confirm I'm not completely nuts.

"She's trying but she's not getting very far. She tries to flirt with all of the drivers, Alex fairly told her when she tried to flirt with Charles" so apparently this girl has a reputation in the paddock. She might think she can get away with it but she hasn't met me yet. "I need to meet your dad for one of his interviews, can I trust you're going to behave while you're alone?"

"I'm not promising anything" as Chelsea leaves me at Aston Martin I run my fingers through my hair I'm startled seconds later when I feel two arms around my neck pulling me into a body for the tightest cuddle possible. I begin to panic for a few seconds until I smell the familiar scent of Lando.

"Baby what on earth are you doing here?" Lando asks hugging me tight from behind. All thoughts of the TV host gone from my mind for now.

"I came to surprise you" I say turning around in Lando's arms to wrap my arms around his neck "you've had an amazing weekend, I couldn't miss out on this race"

"You have massively surprised me! I didn't expect to see you here at all. I was about to go into the garage and I saw the blonde hair, I instantly knew it was you. I'm so happy you're here" feeling Lando kiss me I pull him closer deepening our kiss "thank you so much for being here"

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Who was that bitch that was trying to flirt with you?" I ask. I'm not going to hide my annoyance, I didn't like seeing another girl flirt with my boyfriend.

"Her name is Alesha, she always tries to flirt. It's an ick the way she keeps trying" Lando tells me and I can see he's worried.

"I'm not annoyed Lando, not with you anyway I could see you pulling away from her. Her on the other hand, she wants to keep her hands off you or she'll be dealing with me" I saw the whole thing happen, it would be completely unreasonable for me to take my annoyance out on Lando.

"I like when you're jealous, it's quite the turn on" Lando whispers so no one around us could possibly hear what we're saying.

"Would it be even more of a turn on if I told you I'm wearing a certain orange underwear today?"

"Fuck yes. I hate that I have to go for the parade now when I'd much rather take you into my drivers room and fuck you senseless" biting my lip I can't help but feel turned on.

"Save it for later babe. I'm here all day. Have a good race I'll be cheering for you, pole sitter" Kissing Lando again I pull myself away from him knowing that if I don't let go there's a huge chance McLaren's number 4 will be missing from the drivers parade.

Before I know it, it's time for the race to start. I'm nervous for Lando starting on pole and my heart sinks as he loses a place at the beginning of the race. I'm not going to let that stop my belief he can do this, he's had such a strong weekend so far. Lando doesn't fall far from Verstappen and begins closing the gap until he finally gets the overtake on lap 17. Now Lando is in the lead I have everything crossed that McLaren get the strategy right to keep Lando in front, as lap 28 rolls around Lando pits for a set of hard tyres. They're going for the one stop and I have everything crossed they've brought Lando in at the right time. I'm so nervous I can barely watch as Lando extends his lead with every lap. As it gets closer to the end of the race I know this win is Lando's, I don't want to celebrate prematurely but there's no way Verstappen can catch up now. As Lando crosses the line 22 seconds ahead of Verstappen I can't help but celebrate with Chelsea despite all of the looks I'm getting from the Aston Martin mechanics.  

"Oh my god! He won! Lando's won Chels!" I feel my eyes fill with tears of joy watching the fireworks erupt in the sky for my boyfriend. I'm so unbelievably happy for him, it's the confidence boost he needs after a tough few races.

"You have to go to the podium Lucía! Your pass will get you in there" watching as Lando gets out of the car to celebrate with the team and his dad, I can tell he's looking around "He's looking for you"

"Chelsea I can't turn up at the podium!" I'd love to be in the crowd as Lando stands on the top step of the podium with god save the king playing but I can't just push my way in there unannounced.

"Is Lucía in here?" Hearing my name I turn around and see Max looking through the crowd of mechanics who are sorting out the Aston Martin cars.

"Max what are you doing here?" I ask confused why Max is hunting me down when his best friend has just won his second Grand Prix.

"The same reason as you. Come with me we don't have ages to stand and talk" Max says pulling me with him "when Lando found out you're here I was put under strict instructions to find you and bring you to the podium if he was up there. Luckily for us he is and now we're going to celebrate his win"

"Where are we going Max?" I ask confused.

"You're watching the podium with the team and us because if you're not Lando will have my head on a platter" as Max weaves his way through the ever growing crowd in parc fermé he gets us as close to the front as he can "Adam, Cisca this is Lucía" Max shouts and I practically give myself whiplash turning to look at him as he pushes me through the rest of the crowd before following himself.

"Lucía it's nice to finally meet you! We've heard so much about you!" Cisca says hugging me and I can't quite believe I'm meeting Lando's parents like this. "We're so happy you could be here for this. I know how much it means to Lan"

"It's nice to meet you both too. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else" I feel sick in case I say something wrong. Giving Max a look I can't believe he didn't warn me. Before I can chastise Max, the announcements starts and Lando is brought out to the podium. His eyes instantly land on me and his parents, the biggest grin appearing on his face when he realises not only am I stood with his parents, his mum also has her arm around me as we celebrate Lando's win together.

"Come on let's get you to Lando" Adam says ushering me to follow him and Cisca "I don't think I've seen him as happy as he looked when he found out you were here"

"It was a last minute decision to fly over, thankfully my dad got me a ticket. I just had such a good feeling about the race I didn't want to miss it" explaining to Adam and Cisca why I'm here, I feel like I need to be completely clear with them. I know the world Lando is from, they're always going to be wary of any girl in his life.

"He's probably happier you're here than what he was when we turned up. When we've been speaking to him lately you're all he talks about" Cisca tells me and I can't help blush.

"Luuucía!" Lando shouts as he comes barrelling towards me. His arms go around my waist as he lifts me off my feet "I think you're my good luck charm! Two wins and you've been at both!"

"Maybe that's your secret"

"This just means I need you here every week" Lando says with a cheeky smile before kissing me hard however, I am conscious that his mum and dad are watching us "I'm sorry I threw you in the deep end with my mum and dad but it was the best feeling seeing you stood with them"

"I can forgive you. I think I'm going to get along with them both"

"Are you staying in the Netherlands tonight or can you come back to Monaco with me?" Lando asks and I'm gutted I'm flying home tonight.

"I can't babe. My flight home is at 10, I literally came for the day because I didn't want to miss the race but I still have work tomorrow" I know it's not realistic for me to have every Monday off work but I wish I didn't have to be in the office tomorrow.

"Can you work from Monaco?"

"I don't have my laptop or anything with me Lando. I'm sorry, I didn't plan this very well my priority was being here for the race" I'm regretting not bringing my laptop with me, if I did I could've stayed with Lando and gone home tomorrow.

"Would you have time for dinner before you have to be at the airport?" Lando asks and I know he's doing what he can to be able to spend time with me and after two weeks apart I'd move mountains to make time for him.

"Of course. I wouldn't want to have tea with anyone else" Pulling Lando into a hug I just want to be in his arms. I want to spend a lazy night together just watching whatever ends up on TV and enjoying each other's company.

Lando's race today was incredible to go from P15 to P4, I have no doubt that he would've finished higher if yesterday was different but seeing that smile back on his face after the race was priceless 🥹

Hello!! If it's not too much trouble, do you have any sites you'd recommend for fashion/outfit visuals besides Pinterest? I'm trying to cobble together some fashion visuals for the deity of eternity template but I've honestly just been fighting for my life during the past *checks clock*...... four hours 😔✊🏽

GENERAL resources - I was vehemently looking for a post I reblogged with stock free photos sites, but it's poofed ;; but I remember Pixabay, Unsplash and FreeImages being mentioned! Something very similar to Pinterest, but not copyright free, is WeHeartIt. These sites are very general, though, so it might be hard to find any actual fashion inspo.

European period-accurate fashion - Here is a post about a HUGE site where you can find period-accurate fashion! It also includes a link to an extremely extensive post on period-accurate fashion with resources such as books, blogs, sites, etc. My only gripe is that a majority of these resources are very eurocentric, but the post included a small non-western section for resources.

Uroboros-specific - I made a post all about the fashion of Uroboros here! This is good for finding fashion that is actually within Uroboros, but it is also great in general for finding keywords / search terms for fashion. You find the best resources by knowing the specific time period/fashion you want.

Hanfu - Traditionally worn by the Chinese, but it persists today! This is one of the fashion inspos of Uroboros. The sites suggested in this post will be more modern/inspired than period-accurate, but they are gorgeous! My preference is to use Taobao, a Chinese site for buying hanfu, but currently, I am unable to access it. Hence, this post has a list of non-Taobao shops.

Deel - traditional Mongolian clothing, also one of the inspiration for Uroboros (desert region). Mongulai is a Mongolian shop founded by a Mongolian man!

Once you find all the kinds of dresses you want, though, you might consider looking for them in Pinterest. You only need a general idea of what you want, not extensive knowledge on it--so you might not want to sift through actual books!

Finding things on Pinterest

Finding things on Pinterest is great for general ideas, but the best things you get on Pinterest is by being specific. I already know I want Rococo, Song style hanfu, and some paintings/vibes/aesthetic, so I'll start searching up those things.

Once I find an image I like and save it, Pinterest learns what I like and starts recommending me things through my feed that are even more accurate to what I'm looking for. And of course, clicking on that Pin will suggest other Pins like it, which sends you down the rabbit hole of finding things. This is how I get 90% of the images I have, with only 10% of it being directly searched.

Here's an example of just searching for vibes/aesthetic. I start my search with "ethereal aesthetic", nature aesthetic, and "marble statues aesthetic":

It took a couple of minutes of scrolling to find these after looking through the search results, since my search terms were relatively general.

After saving only a few images, I went back to the feed and it started suggesting me some pretty similar things:

However, when you know SPECIFIC things you want (after looking at the resources I suggested), you get even better results just from searching (in addition to having amazing suggestions from your feed).

Here, I looked up "Rococo paintings," "Mediterranean aesthetic," and "Song style hanfu":

These are pretty specific things, so they find specific things that I want! And after saving them, here is what my feed looked like--chockful of everything I wanted!

do you have any tips for someone who wants to make their own regalia? I've always wanted to make my own fancy shawl but I have no idea where to start 😞

Ive actually already posted some tips as well here, so go have a look at part one on tips and tricks for making regalia :) I'm still not especially good at sewing, but I HAVE done some fancy shawl designing & sewing before, & I know these tips and tricks from my family sewing a lot as well (so I have the information, but the success in execution on my part is still debatable dvdfudhf). So here's what I know:

There's actually some fancy shawl regalia patterns for sewing if you're not confident in designing the actual cut & style of the fabric yourself! Try find one if you'd like somewhere to have a template.

If you're more inclined to design something yourself, try sketching/coloring out some designs & color palettes. Even if you're using a template, having an idea for what colors you want for the designs & where will help a lot beforehand. Making something like a pinterest board for inspo can help (but remember not to directly & exactly copy designs you see on pre-existing fancy shawl regalias) like, what base color do you want your shawl to be? What about fringe? Is the skirt a different color? Stuff like that. Even play around with the same color palette but arranged differently. (Also, I suggest bringing your finalized design with you when you go shopping for fabric so you can get something as close as possible)

^connected to the above, but if you have a set color palette in mind, this could also help you with any matching beadwork. Beadwork could potentially be even more expensive than the rest of your outfit if you buy it separately or even if you bead it yourself (but this could depend on different things). So if you're like me & not bougie, then having a color palette set could help you accumulate beadwork overtime. Like you might buy one hair barrette for $20, then some earrings for $35, and then make your own hair ties: they won't be a matching set, but looking for beadwork of similar color palettes to your regalia will help bring it together. & don't worry, lots of dancers do this. Lots of dancers even have mismatching beadwork/accessories (like me lol). It's also not uncommon to have accessories that a sewn from fabric instead of beadwork/quillwork so you could do this too!

As mentioned in part one, if you don't have access to canvas or you just wanna save some money, you can use old jeans to cut up & use for things like your cape & vest, a cloth belt, & your leggings. Youd put your colored/chosen fabric on top of the jeans, & the jeans won't be seen. If you need, double up the jeans for stability/structure.

I suggest not skimping out & using jeans for moccasins (particularly the bottom) bc your footwear needs to be tough, and jeans will absolutely get demolished if you use them for moccasins. Use canvas and/or leather for moccasins, especially the bottom/soles.

You can pretty much use any fabric you want for your regalia, but satin/silks & cotton are probably the most common for fancy shawl dancers to use, and note that various other fabrics might come with their own pros and cons. Ideally you want something not too heavy, breathable, comfortable, and if you can, easily washable & iron safe. This just makes the sewing process a bit easier, and maintenance less hectic. But for things like the fabrics you might use for the designs on your shawl, go ham & use whatever you think looks pretty

General regalia sewing tips: I suggest making your skirt/dress length to about your calves if you want to show off your moccasins & leggings. Also, having a skirt that is wider at the bottom helps with leg movement & dancing. Make your shawl a bit longer than your actual spread arms length. Your ribbons/fringe can also be sewn up a little on the sides of your shawl rather than just the bottom. Remember to hem the raw edge of your fabric so it doesn't fray, either a folded or rolled em or bias tape works well.

Btw the "cape" is the part that hangs over your fancy shawl in the back, on your back, and its usually attached to your vest or is a yoke (so no vest, & this style usually incorporates a belt instead).

Plumes are very in fashion right now for fancy shawl dancers, but regular eagle feathers are also used, & were more popular in the earlier 2000s, so both work fine.

Gladiator Big Talk: Foundations, Blue

So on the gladiator discord, (Gladiator is a competitive singleton format using the Timeless card pool on arena and you should check us out, it's great) I do a series of long, hastily written thoughts on every single new-to-arena card and call them Big Talks. Foundations is a very big set, so I've decided to move them over here! Some notes:

This is comprehensively talking about every single new-to-arena card in the main set of Foundations. If I don't bring up a card, it's probably because it's already in the format or in Jumpstart Foundations, which I'll cover later.

I'm sorting this by collector number, which, for this set is somewhat baffling, so Ctrl+F is your friend if you want to find a specific thought.

Each card is also a link to it on scryfall, so you can follow along without having the full set open.

Without further ado, let's start off with Arcane Epiphany:

Arcane Epiphany: I think we have much better options, and I'd be surpised if you would be going for this option specifically, but I'd be glad to be proven wrong 

Archmage of Runes: 5 mana is just a metric ton for a guy that's not idiotic, protected, or having an immediate impact on the game 

Bigfin Bouncer: Vibes Report: D-, come see me after class, these vibes are rancid, dude looks like he would shove me into a locker in 6th grade and also jesus that nose(?)

Cephalid Inkmage: This creature is super interesting, but ultimately it does a couple different things that are just done so much better by others that it’s not really worth trying a super inefficient creature for it.

Clinquant Skymage: Today I learned what “Clinquant” means - It does not mean “a flying creature that is playable in gladiator” for what it’s worth, but rather glittering and/or tinseled. Neat!

Curator of Destinies: If I had a nickel for every creature that FoF’d or Steam Augury’d, I’d have a decent number of nickels. If I had a nickel for each one that’s good today, I don’t think I’d have any, including this one unfortunately. 6 mana is just a ton when 1 mana more gets you things like Atraxa, and you already have options like Dream Trawler if you do want to hard cast a 6 drop.

Drake Hatcher: 2 drops with vigilance and prowess are legitimately hard to be so bad they can’t find a home, and this one has a pretty good effect too so I think it’s a shoe in for u based blitz and tempo decks. 3 toughness with prowess is also a very exciting statline, as it means someone will dodge bolt by casting any noncreature spell.

Elementalist Adept: I don’t think this is anything, but flash and prowess really pique my interest and make me want to think about playing blitz and flash decks more. Vibes report: C, dude’s outfit is too monochrome to be fun at parties imo

Erudite Wizard: The problem with the “Draw two” archetype is that the bar for how good your payoffs need to be to be gladiator/constructed playable means they essentially will never go at common or uncommon and be playable in gladiator. If it’s any consolation, this one looks like it’ll be bad in limited as well.

Faebloom Trick: I think this card is surprisingly good especially for being an instant, but I don’t think there’s sincerely a home for this in Gladiator. It’s a very good limited uncommon, but it is still mostly just that.

Grappling Kraken: I really love this effect, but I’m allergic to this effect at 6 mana, so I think I’ll pass. If this effect ever comes around at 4 mana I will be very tempted though.

High Fae Trickster: I am a huge fan of cards like Tidal Barracuda and Yeva, that give you flash on things and still contribute to the board, and this does it the best by a good margin. If you’re not concerned about countermagic but you are concerned about interaction otherwise, this is an absolute slam dunk. That said, the fact that it’s a lot worse into countermagic might make it really only worthwhile in a post-Mana Drain world.

Homunculus Horde: This isn’t even good in Ux Draw-twos, mainly because it just always folds to even the thought of a wrath and doesn’t contribute to the board in a way that actually appeals to winning games. It also often takes a turn to get going at least and that’s a tough sell on a 2/2 with no protection or other text.

Icewind Elemental: Vibes report: C+, this could be much higher but I really wish it had another type to show how goofy it is, like Elk.

Inspiration from Beyond: Any more ways to put Time Warp into my hand is going to catch my eye, and one that can do it twice is extra spicy. The 7 mana flashback is a ton, however, even if it is gravy on an already helpful plate.

Kaito, Cunning Infiltrator: This card's kinda not ok when you're even remotely ahead, and when you're close to parity it does a lot of work. Making 2/1s as a pretty cheap - ability and the fact that a couple fliers getting in refunds that loyalty really boosts my standing on the card. This might make me try doing WU skies again

Kiora, the Rising Tide: The good news is that this is flooting on a 3 cost body, so it can be reanimated quite easily and fills up the graveyard well, and that’s the big appeal I see. That said, it also is there so it can make an 8/8 and it’s quite vulnerable if your goal is to use it for that purpose. All this is to say that you shouldn’t be counting on the 8/8 even if threshold is trivial, but the card can be good without the attack trigger if you’re set up for it.

Lunar Insight: I’m a little cynical of this card, but I think there’s a home for this if you can consistently draw 3+ cards with it. If paradox ever becomes a more played deck, then this will be a choice quantity based draw spell.

Mischievous Mystic: I am very glad for this card to simply be the best version of the “draw two, make a dude” cards, and it plays very well as a piker flier and as a token producer. Emrakul’s Messanger was a little nice, but having the resultant bodies actually be able to kill the opponent puts it a step above, truly.

Refute: Jeez, billy, why'd your mom let you have two futes? This card seems aight, this ain't like saruman's trickery but it is a cancel with significant upside

Rune-Sealed Wall: Double the scryfish, 1.5x the cost! That said, scryfish have never been all that, and it continues here. Vibes report: C+, not doing anything special, but quite cool.

Skyship Buccaneer: Very limited-coded. We have 5/5 fliers for 5 these days, y’know?

Sphinx of Forgotten Lore: Tired: This needs to ambush something to be good, and it’s so hard to do that with 3 toughness. Wired: This evasive 3/3 that snapcasters on attack also gets to come in after my opponent commits to a wrath!

Strix Lookout: Better storm crow is still very bad, so Vibes Report: A, the dude’s got lil goggles! omg look at him all cute n happy :3 :V

Uncharted Voyage: Strictly worse than another unplayable limited common, so welcome back to Vibes Report: B-, it’s very cool to have a removal spell that’s not so negatively poised, and instead is still depicting a progression, just, somewhere new. I think that’s neat.

Aetherize: It’s exciting to see this card land here for the first time, but it’s always a bit awkward to actually use. It is useful as a replacement for settle in non-white control decks to still act as a blowout when you can’t have the more well-known option.

Extravagant Replication: It’s cool to see cards like these make their way onto arena and into standard, but it is very bad and you should not play it.

Fleeting Distraction: Cantrips can only get so bad, and while this one does require a target, it also has the benefit of being active on the board while also being a cantrip. I don’t think this beats out the big 2 of Opt and consider, but it’s still quite good if you’re going deep on the slot.

Time Stop: I haven’t seen much of Discontinuity lately, but Time Stop is an incredibly fun card and everyone should play it at least once in their life. Is it good? Probably not, all things considered, but god is it fun.

Starlight Snare: I’m gonna be real: seeing “When this Aura enters,” as a complete phrase on a Magic card makes my eyes hurt for a second right now, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Bad Vibes Report: D for it though.

Arcanis, the Omnipotent: I don’t think we’re gonna see a great resurgence of Paradorks anytime soon, but this is the kind of card that pushes the deck one step further to really shine as a density based combo deck. That said, it hasn’t aged particularly well in the last 2 decades.

Dictate of Kruphix: I really don’t think we need or want to go deep on Howling Mine effects, but this does keep us moving in that direction. I think it’s almost defensible in a flash deck, but until Mana Drain/Dig Through Time are not major players in the meta, more ways to give your opponents cards and by extension flexible options is more bad than usual.

Flashfreeze: There are cards that fall into the camp of “ok if you know exactly what your opponent’s on in the finals of the season,” and then there’s cards like flashfreeze, which are bad even if they’re going into their preferred matchup.

Fog Bank: This falls into a subset of cards that don’t do anything but buy you a bit of time each turn, and while that can add up, you buy the same time better with just a counterspell or removal spell.

Harbinger of the Tides: This card is a classic, and I really love the mechanic of “pay 2 more for flash”. While I don’t think the merfolk typal deck is at its peak, this is a good thing that the mana for casting it represents a lot of things, like a mana drain, aetherize, subtlety, etc.

Mystical Teachings: I like this card’s vibes quite a lot, but it does suffer from costing roughly a million mana in this format. This format is just too fast for this card’s ideal play, where you get a legal target for it, then immediately cast that legal target, but the options of Mana Drain and Tainted Pact cost a ton of mana to get that going for. The card’s still playable, but the game has gotten much faster since it last was in a new constructed format.

Sphinx of the Final Word: I remember when this card was first printed and there was a lot of hope for it, but it just fell flat because it was 7 mana in a format where getting to 7 also meant being able to cast good eldrazi. Here, it’s even worse, where you just have to contend with things like Dream Trawler and give me a reason to play a 7 mana dolt instead of a 6 mana cooler one.

Confiscate: There’s an unfortunate truth that this kind of effect sucks to play below 6 mana without some restriction, but also is just not good enough for a constructed format below 6 mana, and that means cards like Confiscate just ain’t it unless they’re a classic Mind Control, which is to say at 4 mana.

Rite of Replication: I actually like this card a little bit more than I should, but it’s partially because I like cards like Doppelgang so seeing another version of the effect does make me raise an eyebrow for GUx ramp decks.

Why I like them/why I don’t I LOVE RIN. What first drew me to her was her design, which I think is just amasing. I loved that she had short hair, that it was green (one of my favourite colours) and such a fun style. Then I found out about her deck and loved her even more. I like how she's a scrappy mechanic who built a D-Wheel with her best friend using scraps and what money they managed to scrunge up. How she shared a dream with Yugo. Even if we didn't get to see her much in the show, I love what they've done with her in Duel Links.

But for something I dislike, it'd be the tired slapstick jokes she has with Yugo. I've never been fond of those jokes, and find they come at the expense of character writing. I think Rin and Yugo's friendship is just more fun without it.

What I like about their appearance Covered above already sjdhg, but I will say I love her overall colour scheme, and how she doesn't have One Singular colour to her, which extends to the other bracelet girls. It's so easy to do that when you've got a set of characters like this, and I appreciate they didn't go that route.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names? Luckily Rin didn't get a name change in the dub. Though having Yugo call her RinRin as a nickname is.... kinda silly ngl. He doesn't have a nickname for her in the sub, and it's not like it shortens her name. I get it might be a pun on the ringing of a bell, but it's still eh to me.

OTP Main Rin ships would be Swiftshipping (girls forgotten by the narrative and world who also hold hands) and Appleshipping, though apple leans pretty hard towards queerplatonic nowadays. I really enjoy Natureshipping as well.

OT3 Can't really think of any that stand out to me.

Favourite card they use You want me to choose a WindWitch?? Ice Bell is one of my favourite of the designs, but I gotta go with Winter Bell. It's such a cool design, I love that it's not completely humanoid like girls in Yugioh usually get, and RIN RIDES IT?? SHE HOPS ON TOP OF HER MONSTER AND RIDES ON IT LIKE A BOARD??? It's so frigging cool.

Favourite moment they were in Hmmm, I think it's a tie between Rin hopping onto Winter Bell or the flashback Yugo has to one of their duels in the Friendship Cup. It's just a cute character moment man.

Least favourite moment The frikkin.... Rin vs Yugo duel. It's such a rough watch. It's so sad.

Yuya

Why I like them/why I don’t I love Yuya man, he's such a fun character. He's having a time of it the whole show but he's still going at them. I love how he's energetic and a showman but is naturally low-tension outside of duels. I don't really have anything I dislike about Yuya, he's just such a fun character.

What I like about their appearance Honestly, I love his hair, specifically the styling. I love how his hair and eyes are the same shade of red. The goggles are a great distinctive detail that's used to show Yuya's current state of mind. I love his outfit so much. It's such a perfect balance of elements that flair out, are tight, or baggy. The white jacket also really helps him stand out. Those zoom-zoom boots he gets at the end of the show kinda ruins the balance though.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names? Same as Rin, no change from sub to dub, thankfully.

OTP I really like Dimensionshipping. But I have a giant soft spot for Syncshipping.

Favourite card they use Oof probably.... Odd Eyes Raging Dragon. The moments iconic, everything about it is phenomenal, but I just really love Raging Dragon's design a lot, the wings especially. Honestly all of Yuya's Entermates are a delight any time they show up.

Favourite moment they were in Honestly any time Yuya gets in the groove during a duel. Actually the most fun protagonist to watch make a comeback for me. It's a mix of expressive animation, fun monster designs, and great voice acting. You feel the pull he gains over his opponent and audience as everyone is wrapped up in his pace and style of dueling.

Least favourite moment Gosh do I even have one.... I guess the argument with Crow in the Synchro arc?? But that's mostly because it's such a pointless debate to begin with, like what are we even doing here.

Earlier today I also shared the Saturnian lore with my best friend, and he asked me some worldbuilding questions about them. I'll paste some of them here, prepare for massive infodump.

Is this like written by the Saturnians pov or Humans? Since its like an exstensive look on Saturnians

Human observation, yes. Saturnians are very secretive on what data they want to share. Except basic census data, that is still fine for them.

Does the inter space travel from earth and satun back and forth exists?

It does exist. Their space travel enables Earth-Saturn travel in 3-4 months depending on orbit position of the two planets.

For comparison, Pioneer 11, the first Saturn space probe, reached the ringed planet after about 6 years (1973-1979)

also interplanetary space travel is now common? Like earth residents can afford tour to Saturn or is it still closed off to general public?

They use Saturnian ships to transfer people back and forth. Frankly no one really wants to wait 6 years to reach the ringed planet when it can be done within 4 months.

The agreement that the two races had to make to get permission to board Saturnian ships was lengthy. Even then human passengers are closely supervised to make sure they don't "steal" technology.

its interesting that if Saturn itself is 'alive', does the Saturnian revere every land that they built upon and try not to damage or relentlessly build on them and have lenghty process to learn if the soil should be preserved and everything like that?

They try to build… what's the word… respectfully? Responsibly? One of the two. Minimizing altering the landscape and build on whatever is there for them to use.

They claim to be able to "speak" or "hear" from the planet itself, a concept that's truly out of human comprehension. Whether it's actual extrasensory perception, a form of indirect communication with other individuals, or simply just a belief is anyone's guess. They have words for things that humans can't define. And the fact that their life expectancy is 5 to 7 times longer than an average human is already well beyond human comprehension.

They've been around for more than 1.5 million years. Modern humans (that is, homo sapiens) have only been around for 200,000.

whats saturnians blood color? Do they have the same blood types like humans

It's black, nearly void black. Blood types, I haven't done that far on worldbuilding. I may just left it out for simplicity.

also what they were look like in their tribal stage before being one of the most advanced race in the universe? Also if we ever venture outside Saturnia, will we ever find other settlements or civillizations or maybe ruins of Saturnians past?

They've conserved their history completely in digital media through augmented reality in almost perfect detail. This allows anyone in Saturn to access it for research purposes with minimal need to travel. Any leftovers of past civilization have been repurposed for building and manufacturing.

Currently they're experimenting with copying consciousness into digital media although the ethics for that is still debatable among various cultures and subcultures.

if Saturnia inspired from solarpunk aesthetics, does communal events exist? Like maybe a massive festival dedicated to Saturn or 'nature' in our sense or a national potluck day or smth like that, just wholesome communal events that connect with nature and everything

They still do in less populated areas. A bit difficult to do in large dense settlements, where instead it's done through virtual reality.

Saturnian "virtual reality" has successfully replicated senses like touch and smell, alongside visual and audio, by directly and wirelessly interacting with the brain stem and providing "fake" senses. Which means this has also allowed the disabled to partake in virtual reality events.

I don't have ideas for Saturn-specific social events right now, but once I do, I'll tell you.

did they ever harness nuclear power?

Fusion reactors, in extremely limited numbers and in very specific use cases. Majority of power is still harvested from wind farms.

i mean if saturnians are technologically advanced, they must've created a technology that can replace or repair limbs?

Prosthetics? They're not super advanced in medicine. They still haven't solved their low healthy birth rate issue. 1.5 million years and they haven't figured out why only 7 out of 10 to 11 of their eggs are able to successfully hatch.

Some cultures believe it's the way Saturn intended and they shouldn't try to figure it out, like why would one question how nature works. Some other cultures believe it's a hidden genetic code waiting to be unlocked, and then some other cultures also believe that doing so will just cause disaster.

If it was an alien utopia, they wouldn't need weapons like railguns. But here they are, still having internal issues waiting to be solved.

- he video calls me every day on his way home from work because he misses me and doesn't want to wait until he gets home to see me

- keeps our house clean and organized better than anyone i have ever lived with

- never wants me to help him carry the groceries in cause he doesn't want me to be uncomfortable

- indulges in my interests to the extreme, and buys me just about any sanrio or squishmallow treat i find

- always tells me not to rush or get hung up on prices (within reason) when we're shopping, combatting a lot of my guilt complexes

- plays my favorite board game with me even though it's a word game and he's not a words person

- watches musicals, reality shows, and documentaries with me even when they aren't in his wheelhouse

- will play games with my family without me if we go to visit them and i need to go rest, but always comes to check on me

- cooks dinner for the family from scratch multiple days a week

- will build furniture, re-arrange a room, spend hours decorating, and always completes a project. has endless patience while doing so and stays calm and not frustrated even when the process is super irritating or tedious

- says "we" did it when he accomplishes something, because i support him and hold things down at home so he always gives me credit when he does well

- does jigsaw puzzles and builds lego with me; he gets the star wars sets and i organize the pieces for him to build, and sometimes we take turns doing pages, and he buys me the botanical sets for holiday gifts

- takes care of all of the laundry, and he works retail so he folds everything perfectly

- left me fully in control of making decisions during my pregnancy, even though he already has two kids. he would tell me his experiences and things to consider, but empowered me pick every baby product and make every medical decision

- i've never heard him raise his voice except to yell "HEY" to break up the kids when they're arguing and getting loud, before bringing it back down

- talks every day about marrying me, our plans for the future and the quality of life he wants to give me and our family and what he's willing to do to get us there

- coordinates his outfits with me and the kids when we go anywhere, has matching shoes with me, lets me wear anything of his that i want, wears my necklaces

- will let me go off for hours about my special interests while he asks questions. he recently has been asking me about queer identities and lgbt history

- never judges me for my health issues (that i'm very self-conscious about) and tells me to relax and not be hard on myself when i'm not feeling well. he never gets mad at me for not doing enough or pushing myself and will pick up extra daddy duties around the house to let me rest

- regularly takes me on dates and makes sure we get grown up time to spend with other adults so i don't feel like i'm only a mom, and encourages me to make plans with my friends and visit my hometown while he's working

- is an active parent who is determined to give the kids experiences. we pretty consistently take them out to see family and friends, trampoline parks, ice skating, mini golfing, bowling, play zones, zoos, pools, parks, beaches, arcades, etc. even when he's fully exhausted

- helps me do my hair when i try to style it and i get frustrated cause i can't see the back and i don't know what i'm doing

- re-arranged half of the house to be able to make me plant shelves out on our apartment balcony so that i can start keeping plants again, and got me my dream plant (pink princess philodendron)

- will do arts and crafts projects with me and the kids, and will cook meals with me and the kids. he let me teach him how to bake and we all made cookies together

- let me paint his nails and color his hair, has gotten his nails done with me at a nail studio, and will pick my nail colors/shapes for me

Ari's crew docked of the coast of Nwe'Simbata[1] and lowered the gangplank. Almost immediately, their ship was quickly boarded by merchants, eager to trade for more goods or coins. Soon the deck was picked clean, and each crew member's wallets were full. Ari sighed; glad the journey was even more profitable. Despite Zik's assurances, the Priestess had been remarkably good at tempting their crew to mutiny. Thankfully, they wouldn't have to worry about future discontent as the Priests were to disembark at noon.

"Your crew seems to be very happy with their newest haul." Olarya shuffled next to Ari's spot overlooking their crew. "Imagine the wealth you could gain at Comraich Kyst. I hear they even sell fine Sh'tàiyán spider silk, enough to outfit your whole crew. Or Greci pickled olives. Those taste great when paired with Meyni spiced agave wine. I've had it once, it goes down like fire a-"

"Don't tempt me with the idea of profit and booze." Ari turned to face the priestess. She was leaning against Ari's captain chair, eyes twinkling with mischief.

"Oh, I would never do such a thing." She answered innocently. "But if I was... Is it working? Hypothetically speaking."

"Nope."

"You can't blame me for trying." She shrugged.

Olarya was about to respond but was drowned out by the noise of something heavy hitting the deck. Their sailors were rolling several barrels of palm wine out of the hull and began to feel their wine horns. Zik plucked the strings of his akonting while Niyilolawa joined him on their talking drum. The scent of palm wine gave Ari an idea.

"Honestly Priestess, I don't think you'd be able to handle my crew for much longer," Ari said as the music below got louder.

"Really? How so?"

"Once most of our work is done and we've sold off our goods, we can get pretty raucous." Ari winked at the Priestess. "I don't think a woman of the cloth could really handle it"

"I'm sure I can handle it," She hmphed, folding her hands and pouting.

"I bet anyone of my crew could drink you priests under the table." They learned in, leering with a shark grin. "I bet I could drink you under the table."

"Is that a challenge?" Olarya's eyebrow rose.

Ari shrugged. "Maybe."

"What's in it for me?"

"Name your price."

She paused for a moment; Ari could see the gears whirling in her head. If they'd played their cards right, Olarya would take the bait. "If I win, you come with us to Comraich Kyst and join the expedition."

"And when you lose?"

"If I lose, I'll stop trying to convince you."

"Deal." Ari offered their hand. "Don't say I didn't warn you Priestess."

Olarya ignored their hand at first. "Don't worry about me. I just need to know you'll keep your word."

Ari anticipated this, but quickly moved to reassure her. "I swear it on my honour and on Tian themself."

Tian was the god of justice and truth, as a demigod and priest, they kept particular watch on any vows they made on their name, promising swift retribution if the promise was broken. The priestess grabbed their hand with little hesitation after that, trying her best to squeeze in a way Ari guessed was supposed to be intimidating. With how tiny her hand was, it's almost comical.

Ari chuckled as she dropped their hand; The pair began to descend to the quarter deck and joined the revelry. They announced their intentions to Niyilolawa who mutely nodded and began to tap out an announcement on their talking drum, letting the whole crew know a challenge was placed. Someone else rolled another barrel of palm wine onto the deck and yet another dragged a table and two chairs to the centre of the deck. Zik poured the first two tankards.

"First to twenty wins," He announced as Niyilolawa+ began to drum along. "Three, two one... drink!"

Ari slammed down their tankard and grabbed the next one Zik had already filled up. They finished that too and grabbed their third as the priestess just barely managed to shakingly lift the tankard to her lips. Ari smirked. They 'd drink the priestess under the table in no time. For the first ten drinks, that proved true, but soon Olarya began to catch up.

"...fifteen." Zik announced.

Ari roughly gulped their drink down in surprise. They were on their fourteenth drink. Somehow, Olarya had started to outpace them, like a turtle outpacing a hare, while still looking as prim as when she started.

On their nineteenth drink, Ari's vision started to blur, and their head was cloudy. They couldn't let up though, Olarya and them were neck and neck. They quickly downed their drink and their next, but it was too late Olarya had already reached twenty.

"I win." The priestess grinned smugly.

A cheer went up from the crew as Ari slumped in their chair, delirious. They had underestimated the Priestess. Somehow, the little bird had outdrank them. Thankfully, their metabolism would burn through their drunkenness soon, leaving them sober to ponder their terrible decisions. Eventually, after a few moments slumped over the table, Ari begrudgingly joined the revelry.

If my trip was to be extended, I might as well have fun.

The priestess was on the deck above, still drinking as she spoke to another priest and overlooked the celebration below.

She smugly lifted her drink to Ari as they approached.

"Still drinking?" Ari asked, they noticed out of the corner of their eye the priest she was speaking with back away to the quarter deck.

"Ah, yes of course, the party's still going. You should join us." She answered, holding back a shit-eating grin.

Ari's stomach turned at the thought of alcohol. "Maybe later."

"Ah, I see someone's still recovering," She teased.

Ari shook their heads. "How does a light weight like you even hold her drink?"

"Practice. The church holds vast amounts of ceremonial wine, priests are terrible at securing it and teenagers are great at getting into things they shouldn't."

Ari couldn't help but laugh. "You were a troublemaker?"

"Not exactly. I was just... curious." Olarya shrugged.

"You've been in the priesthood since you were a teenager?"

"Since I was a child. It's what I've always wanted to do and what I plan to do for the rest of my life." Olarya smiled softly to herself. "What about you?"

"What about me?" Ari asked, confused. They weren't much for work in the church.

"What do you want to do, later in life, when you're too old for sailing?"

Ari paused, thinking. They weren't one to dream so far ahead, still used to fighting to live day by day. Finally, they answered. "I'll settle down in my hometown; buy an inn with my savings."

"We could make that easier, you know, help you settle down."

"No need to keep offering Priestess, you've already outdrank me." Ari chuckled. "I intend to keep my word."

"I know, but it can't hurt to sweeten the deal." Olarya giggled into her cup, a little wine dribbled down her plump lower lip.

Without much thinking, Ari whipped away the drop of alcohol, pausing the priestess' words. 

She's remarkably beautiful, up close. Olarya's features were delicate like the rest of her, as if she'd been moulded from porcelain. Her silver eyes caught and reflected the moon's light back. They'd already committed themselves to going to Comraich, so Ari felt free to properly notice without fearing temptation.

Their hand migrated to the priestess' chin, tilting her face up to study her better. Olarya leaned into her touch, eye's fluttering closed.

"I.." Olarya began but trailed off as she met Ari's eyes.

"Do you really want to sweeten the deal?" Ari teased, voice low and husky as they lowered their face to meet Olarya's.

"Yes," She breathed out, eyes still closed as their lips met.

Ari woke up the next morning with sunlight streaming onto their face from the porthole. They were in their cabin, undressed, curled up next to them, silver curls splayed out haphazardly, was the priestess. After a moment of surprise, the events of the night before flooded back to her. They looked at Olarya's sleeping form, then at themself, then the state of her cabin. They had a feeling this was going to be a long two months.

what's your process when you make minecraft skins? how do you come up with ideas? what programs or sites do you use? how do you simplify details into easily communicable shapes? skin making is like an arcane art huge kudos to skin artists

im gonna put my whole answer under the readmore since i have very many words to say so hope u enjoy!

ok so i mainly make skins for events and such, which are usually based off of creators' existing skins. usually i'll just give them silly outfits in their team color, but i've been trying to give them somewhat of an overlying theme as well.

(note: i am somewhat retired from event skinmaking? meaning i havent made any in a whiiiiile but i could come back to it at some point? we shall see.)

here's the skins i'm probably most proud of. I wanted to do some kind of cyberpunk-style outfits using their team color (lime), while also trying to get better at incorporating a color palette.

having a color palette to pick base colors from is soooo helpful, it allows you to have a bunch of complimentary accents that really blend well together. whether you make your own color palettes, use generators online (paletton.com is my favorite), or use palettes that others have already made (lospec.com has some cool ones), they definitely help bring the skin to life.

i've also done a few custom skins for friends, starting from scratch. for those, i usually ask them to give me a few references of what they're looking for: real-life outfits, hairstyles, general style of skin, etc.

for both team skins and custom commissions, references are your best friend! i have a pinterest board full of various clothing items/outfits that i might translate into skin form in the future.

(side note: people often don't realize skin making is a type of art too. please don't use skins others have created, recolor them, and try to pass them off as your own work. looking at other skins for general inspo, cool! but straight up copying large portions of a skin and claiming it as your own... not cool. just don't.)

one of the hardest parts about making skins is definitely getting all of the little details across. since you have so few pixels to work with, it is pretty easy for the artist to have one design in their brain and for others to have different ideas about how the cubito would look in 4k.

for me personally, i don't worry too much about getting all the details perfect, as i think the different interpretations are what make minecraft skins so unique! (and, at least for me, seeing any art of someone's interpretation of the skins i've made is the best compliment i could ever receive!) :D

this is the program i use, blockbench! (blockbench.net) it's so much easier to use then the basic skin editor you find on many minecraft skin websites. plus you can create custom models or textures as well! its not just for skin making.

important features:

ability to work on multiple skins at once! makes creating team skins much easier

color palette importer

pixel grid that turns on and off

copy and paste elements to different layers of the skin

posing the skin to see how it looks when players are running vs standing vs sitting, etc.

toggling specific elements/layers on and off

different lighting options!

and a ton more things that i don't even know how to use!

Glassheart DEVLOG 1

INTRODUCTION

Hey, I'm Ianthe Rosingbird. A solo game dev who loves to read and create fantasy, romance and horror visual novels/adventure games. The game I'm currently working on is Glassheart, and while the story is still influx due to me changing a few narrative elements here and there the basic structure goes something like this:

Anya-Torre, is a young woman attending a prestigious boarding school when she's suddenly thrusted into a conflict involving witches, a guild sworn to eradicate all threats to their kingdom and a mysterious society of alchemists. She acts as an aid to the two princes, Ademeus and Radmes as they seek to protect the secrets of the Glassheart; a relic with the power to rewrite causality and unravel the strings of fate.

GAMEPLAY

Since this is a visual novel, there will be the obvious dialogue scenes as well as choices to make, though I don't want the choices to be dialogue based. Instead, I want Anya to use a bunch of items stored within her inventory or snippets of information she gathered throughout the story to make certain events unfold.

For example; If she overhears two people talking about another person, I want her to be able to store that information for use at a later stage. She can also collect objects that you might need at a later date, especially herbs and flowers for spells.

This brings us to the second type of gameplay I want to implement; exploration. I've already began work on this feature as you can see in the gif below, but basically Anya will be able to go from room to room by rotating the camera and clicking on doors. The wand will glow on objects of note and doorways as a handy guide so that you're easily alerted to what is clickable.

The third type of gameplay will be potion making. Since Anya is an aspiring alchemist, she's able to use guides and spell books to whip up all sort of potions that will allow her to access different rooms or defend against obstacles. Invisibility is one of those, but I'm hoping to have a whole list of spells planned out by the next dev log.

The final type of gameplay is still up in the air, but I might do an RPG battle system for cases where characters need to fend against witches and other foes, but we'll see.

There's also going to be dress-up game elements but those aren't as important. I just want to create a lot of pretty outfits for the characters. It's very self-indulgent.

CHARACTERS

In terms of characterisation a lot is up in the air(mainly cos I did a last minute pivot with the lore of the world and the themes of the story so I'm currently shifting things around). The one thing I can guarantee though is that it's going to be messy and very LGBTQ+. So yah. That's all I feel comfortable saying until I commit to some ideas.

The lack of commitment to characterization seems perfectly illustrated in the two outfits I rendered for Anya's sprite.

AESTHETIC

For this game and all the other games I'm planning to make moving forward, I want to go for a 90s anime type aesthetic, with subtitles and basically no UI elements. You're still able to access your setting via a drop down menu but I want you to feel like you're watching an anime rather than playing a game.

Later on down the line, I plan to add some character animations like mouth movement and evnr a few little gestures to give each character a unique flare but I want to get the basic character sprites done first.

I also want to dedicate an entire log to going over my artistic influences and well as the style I was able to develop for this project. Just for fun.

TIMELINES

Glassheart is still in it's infancy. In terms of coding I've got most of the dialogue and choice system down as well as the navigation but I still need to work on saving and loading and other boring things. The story's also going to have a tonne of characters and I'm not even half way through the cast at the moment and I'm even more far behind on the backgrounds so it may take a while before I can confidently release a demo. I'm hoping I'll be able to do that by December which seems to me like a reasonable goal but if I could get everything done much earlier...or later. Hopefully it's the former.

Meanwhile, I might begin a YouTube Dev Log to also show you the actually gameplay footage as well as the tracks I've been working on for the game so I'll keep you posted on that. In the meantime I uploaded a YouTube video of a third year project I did for college if you'd like to see a sample of some of the stuff I've done. It's very much the aesthetic I'm going for.

And with that I think that end's my Dev Log. I'm hoping to have one of these lengthier logs every week or so but I'll also try to post some art and progress gifs every so often as well as some interesting info about the characters and the world.

Will you please share your black adam thoughts?? I was also very nervous about it and how it would handle the JSA but i actually really liked it! I actually work at a movie theater so i saw it twice already 😂

i'm putting these together because they're all related to my thoughts on black adam 2022 and i thought it'd be more convenient for everybody (even if they're wildly antithetic povs)! i absolutely loved black adam and i think i'm gonna see it again quite literally as soon as i can. given that i only got back approx ten minutes ago, here's some jumbled thoughts right off the bat:

i think what makes or breaks a superhero movie is whether the people involved think comic books are beneath them or not (as the folks over at the mcu often seem to do) and black adam certainly loves comic books with its entire heart and soul and you can tell. from various black reign panel recreations to carter's picture perfect thanagarian ship from hawkman 2002, this is a very sincere and earnest movie with none of the parodic tone i so often despise in superhero media.

VISUALLY GORGEOUS. SIMPLY GORGEOUS. the fact that 99.9% of the film takes place in daylight immediately resolves the lighting issue of all modern cinema but lawrence sher (of joker 2019 fame) as cinematographer simply changes the game with this one. in fact, i can say the same thing about the magnificent use of cgi -- cyclone's powers, in particular, are one of the most beautiful things i've ever had the pleasure of seeing in action.

while there are certainly a few things i disagree with, such as carter's estate and kent seemingly having a chauffeur/butler, i think most of the major changes were unavoidable either in a lost in translation sort of way or simply in order to make this movie palpable to average audiences used to marvel. over all, i felt the jsa's dynamic was captured perfectly and what drew me to the team in the first place is very much still there in a way that's definitely absent from stargirl, for example. they're still a horrible little family made up almost exclusively of weird uncles.

SPEAKING OF. AL PRATT? I SCREAMED.

i thought it was made clear that this isn't the entire team but rather just the members carter chose for this particular mission, which i also enjoyed. and while we're here, to touch on some of the points from the anon, i don't think any marvel-style humour was actually present? or at least, it didn't come across that way to me. i mean, it's a very funny film, i was laughing nearly the whole time (or tearing up! or simply absolutely on the edge of my seat!) but it all felt perfectly natural to me, especially in al's case where it's a clear consequence of powers he's obviously still unused to. the relationship between him & carter is actually exactly the element that made me feel a first spark of recognition like.... man i'm seeing my favourite lil comic book guys up there on the big screen.

ALSO THE LEGEND OF CARTER - KENT GAY HOMOSEXUALITY LIVES ON. OLD FRIEND? CARTER CRYING? YES OKAY OKAY I'M ON BOARD. IT'S NOT CARTER IF HE DOESN'T HAVE A BIZARRE WARRIOR BOND WITH SOMEBODY.

considering i was all set on hating this portrayal of kent, i also can't believe how much i ended up completely utterly loving him. the movie definitely has a knack for making you fall in love with its characters nearly instantly (maxine!!!!!!!!! oh maxine!!!!!!!) because it's so well written but kent's random outfit changes for no reason whatsoever, the bit where he's parading around in a dressing gown on carter's ship, "i'm not that kind of doctor", the entire scene in adrianna's apartment... yeah babey. actually i was losing my entire mind at "i remember the day i saw my first aeroplane...", the way pierce plays him might not have been intended to be hilarious but by god, giffen himself couldn't have done a better job. you can tell he's not all there (and i did also enjoy maxine calling him possessed by fate) and it's precisely how kent should be even in the absence of unnatural youth.

the narrative actually allowing carter to be his usual arrogant asshole self-appointed leader with a heart of gold self was also a welcome bonus, i loved seeing him the way he's always been written at his best and i loved that his sharp edges haven't been dulled any by a script that could've easily gone the sanitized route. his black and white thinking is also something that's always been a part of him and i don't think it's necessarily odd to have him say superheroes don't kill -- superheroes certainly don't kill as easily and indiscriminately as black adam does, not even the jsa.

on that point, the jsa's actions are clearly framed to be in the wrong? i loved black adam's arc, i thought mr the rock was acting his little heart out and succeeding like never before but we're also definitely pushed to be on his side to begin with. adrianna and amon are the moral centre of the movie and they certainly stand with black adam! the movie doesn't simply co-opt anti imperialist languages for the hell of it, the jsa is plainly told they're coming here with a us-centric pov and helping nothing & nobody in the name of some nebulous form of justice. i thought it was definitely abundantly clear that the conversation opened around a colonized kahndaq does not condemn adam's actions against intergang etc.

FINALLY, MY THOUGHTS ON THE FATE HELMET AT THE END? HERE'S HOW JARED STEVENS CAN STILL WIN.

this got long enough but god, i really did love it. i loved black adam. i loved the jsa. a respectful, loving, beautiful cinematic adaptation like i never thought we'd ever get.

Time for Show Kaz Appreciation

This is not in any particular order, I'm just gonna ramble all my thoughts.

Now we all know the show is kinda fast paced so everything doesn't settle in your head within a single watch. But after re-watching a few clips, I grew more fond of show Kaz.

1: Starting with Episode 5

Kaz decides Arken will grab Alina whilst the rest of them set up the lynx flush (was lynx intentional? remember Inej's title at the menagerie?)

Anyways, Inej immediately makes a remark because even though they all believe in Kaz's planning, she is shocked he's ready to let the new guy take the most important part. This shows that like usually in the books Inej (and Jesper) don't know the complete details or the actual plan laid out by Kaz.

Look at Arken's joyous look on knowing he's being handed the most important task. He had wanted to be alone with Alina all along so he could get rid of the sun summoner. He probably even lied about the lodestone and its prolonged use making one..impotent?

And its only later after the Winter Fete event, when she sees Alina hanging out with her grisha pals that Inej realises Kaz had lied about the lynx flush. That they weren't acting as distraction but were actually flushing out the traitor. Arken dumbly took the bait cause Kaz let him believe that he as the leader of crows was putting his trust in Arken when handing him the main job. And it all went exactly as Kaz planned 😌

Look at all the fucks Kaz gives about Arken getting caught 😂 whilst Inej is there somewhat worried for this stranger. Soft Kaz who? He only cares about himself and "his crows". 😗

And he's smart as usual. If there's one person whom you can count on to know about profit makers, its Kaz. Where Inej is concerned about the "what ifs" if he's wrong, Kaz is completely sure because he thinks things over. Everything.

2: Kaz being fine with Arken's inclusion

Since from the SS above we can see Kaz knows that Arken is one of the two people profiting from this whole "Grisha smuggling trade", the other person has to be someone powerful enough to allow such trade to run smoothly. Arken has been doing this for quite a while without any governmental issues whicj means someone powerful enough is backing him up. And Kaz knows which is very useful to Kaz and his crows because:

~ their travel won't be gain much attention of higher ups cause people know its that guy Arken's train

~ if they do get caught by Ravkan government, they can put it all on Arken since the guy actively smuggles out Grisha. And the crows can just say they were working for Arken, not the other way around. (i know the Darkling may not let them go so easily but i know Kaz will have a plan to get out his crew if it ever came to that)

3: Suspicious of Arken

Kaz is always somewhat suspicious of Arken if you re-watch. Why would a smuggler just decide to join a bunch of criminals if he's already profiting off a lot from the fold. There must be something in it for him. And Kaz knows, which is why when its time to fetch things for Arken, Kaz doesn't let Jesper or Inej have any thoughts. He immediately takes up the quick task of bringing the goat and assigns Jesper with alabaster coal. He specifies no detours but he knows Jesper will take his time, which in turn will give Kaz more time to go around and spy on what is Arken actually upto. And he does, he discovers Arken conversing with Zlatan who must've also handed Arken the lodestone and the mission to kill Alina.

Thus, Kaz's suspicions about Arken are confirmed and now he's fully ready to expend Arken whenever the need be. And he finds that opportunity when he discovers there's a decoy to be dressed up as Alina. He immediately uses that to appoint Arken, what everyone believes, is the most important part of their mission but instead tricks him.

4: Other things to take note of

• Inej's lose trust in Kaz

Even when Alina escapes from the Crows, Inej doesn't believe for a second that Kaz has dropped the job. When they have a small argument in that tavern, she even asks if he's threatening to send her back to the Menagerie. We know he'll never but Inej doesn't. And same goes for the show onlys. They don't really know Kaz and trust him just as much as Inej.

Even when Kaz decides for them to board the ship as delegates, both Inej and Jesper are unsure. They ask him if truly just wants to get back to Ketterdam. That its merely coincidence that the sun summoner happens to be traveling via the same ship.

This small sliver of doubts about Kaz is something that the others always have about him even in the books. Nobody knows whats going on in Dirtyhand's mind.

• His outfit changes

We have no idea how he acquired the artist outfit or the guard outfit where Inej is about to stab him xD.

We also have no idea how he snuck amongst the Darkling's personal guard. How he acquired the outfit and what went down between him and whomever he snatched it from, we have no idea. A complete magician if you ask me.

• His Quick Wit

Now we were all having fun watching that "JES" moment. But thats where Kaz also informs them he had been focusing on Arken's timings and that he's learnt them. A quick thinker and a fast learner!

• His moments with Inej

Like I've said in my other post, his moments with Inej are canon compliant. Whenever they are alone, he's always more open..more like a boy talking to his crush ☺

All their book moments are like that— meaningful conversations or heated arguments or a mix of both.

• His friendship with Jesper

Its also canon compliant. If you remember "pay someone to pay someone else to burn my kruge" and "i'll hire Matthias's ghost to beat up yours" all happened in canon. Jesper is his bestie, he's always gonna be like that with Jesper.

5: His scenes in Ketterdam

All his scenes in Ketterdam were amazing. (okay him being bested by two of Pekka's men was kinda unbelievable but needed).

Him warning Jesper about loud noises at the table, him stoically standing when Alexei is shot, him casually looking around and discovering that a woman's way of counting money is different. He's really a keen observer and smart.

Also, him stealing the crow club shares, him quickly catching the note sent by Heleen and him telling Jesper he would've done exactly what Heleen did to manipulate Inej. Thats the cold and calculated Dirtyhands for you!

So there it is! Some of what I noticed whilst re-watching. The finer details about him are sprinkled throughout the show but we find it hard to see them because we are used to see such things fully unveil in books when reading his pov. Unless the show gave us a Kaz pov, we wouldn't have immediately taken note of everything I said above..:)
