‘Touch’ Digital piece
This sample was made from images I took for the project,
I changed the brightness of the original images and added in a grain filter to the background. I didn't want to just add in the flower images as is and so I used the pen tool and drew over them in a similar style to all the other pieces and added a few green highlights around the piece to give off the look of leaves.
I them drew over the hand and for a while struggled to find the right colour for the sketch, eventually I decided to pick a orange and pink colour and brighten it by changing the saturation. For the text I did the same thing as the last piece
By adding a section from the original image over top of it to to tie it better into the piece.
Once I felt everything was done I changed the hue and saturation to try and find a tone for the sample that would work best.
I'm happy with how this piece came out, I really like the drawings in the corner as they were fun and interesting to stylise, if I were to do something differently, I would want to spend a bit more time on the hand as I feel like it's too subtle compared to what I wanted.

Unchanging
Synopsis: He was content with the simplicities life had to offer, while you sought out the world.
Pairing: Saiki Kusuo x artist!reader
Genre: Fluff, Slight Angst
Word Count: 3.6k
You first heard of him back in your second year of high school. There was nothing about Saiki Kusuo that stood out to you, but your good friend, Yumehara Chiyo, thought otherwise.
“Don’t you think Saiki looks like a prince? He’s so dreamy that I can’t keep my eyes off of him. He’s so cool and mysterious,” your friend blabbered. If by cool and mysterious, she meant cold and aloof, then you completely agreed.
Even the popular pretty girl, Teruhashi Kokomi, seemed enraptured by him, despite Saiki’s unwillingness to shower her any attention like every guy in school. She never told you about her crush on him, but it was obvious through her body language alone that she was smitten by the pink-haired boy.
You didn’t understand their fleeting infatuation for someone they hardly knew - never experienced the feeling of falling hard for someone from the depths of your soul that they were the only person you could think about. And you were perfectly content with that. You had bigger dreams to achieve than a small high school romance that wasn’t guaranteed to last long anyway.
The Okinawa school trip was an outing that all the second years in PK Academy were looking forward to, you included. Although you had a feeling that your friends, Chiyo and Kokomi, had different intentions for tagging along.
They must have been so elated that the three of you ended up in the same group with the boy they liked.
You carried on disregarding Kokomi and Chiyo’s painfully obvious antics to spend time with their beloved prince charming until later that evening when you decided to take a walk outside the hotel alone. You convinced yourself that a late-night stroll would be an enjoyable pastime, but really, you wanted to get away from the love-struck fantasies of your two friends who were oblivious of the fact that they were both pursuing the same boy.
You don’t know how long you’ve been wandering around, but by the time you returned, the hotel had disappeared from your sight. Two recognizable figures stood by a large hole torn on the ground. A battered ship had risen from the gap where the building used to be.
Toritsuka Reita from Class 2-2 stood next to your pink-haired group member while Saiki had a hand directed at the ship, indicating that he was the one causing it to float midair. Your jaw dropped in disbelief at the sight before you.
Saiki turned his head in your direction as if he knew you were there all along. He kept his usual blank composure, although you could recognize the wary look in his eyes as he stared at you. Toritsuka panicked upon the realization that you were there to witness the whole scene.
You didn’t know how you should've reacted when the two boys told you of their psychic powers.
“I won’t tell a soul,” you promised.
‘I know,’ Saiki’s voice echoed into your mind.
The rest of the trip went by smoothly after that incident. Kokomi subsequently spoke out about the crush she had on Saiki, and Chiyo announced that she had fallen for Kaidou Shun.
You shook your head in wonder at the orange-haired girl. It was astonishing how quickly she was able to abandon her feelings for one boy and move on to someone else so quickly.
You realized that love was brief and ever-changing like the ticking seconds on a clock. There was no point in wasting time on such a fickle emotion when the only thing you would devote yourself to were your ambitions for the future.
Nevertheless, a subconscious bond had been formed between you and Saiki after you learned his secret.
You shared a glance with the psychic from afar as Kokomi relayed to you the dream she had of the boy she liked.
He was kinder and a lot less indifferent than you originally thought. Saiki wouldn’t admit it, but you would notice the subtle acts he performed to help out a troubled stranger and the small deeds he initiated to prevent harm from coming across the people around him.
You finally acknowledged Saiki as a friend after he deliberately shared his umbrella with you during a particularly rainy day.
‘Good grief. I was feeling generous today, so this is nothing. Just make sure to come to school prepared next time,’ he had told you after you first rejected his help in worry of troubling him.
You found out much later that he could have stopped the rain with his abilities.
The empty café was tranquil save for the scratching of your pencil as you scribbled on your sketchbook. Saiki sat across from you, paying you no attention just as you did to him. His usual stoic expression was abandoned as he blissfully devoured his coffee jelly.
“I have a dream. After high school, I’ll travel around the world for a bit. I’ll join a bunch of art competitions and win a bunch of awards. Then eventually, I’ll go to an art school in New York so I can major in Illustration. And maybe I might even make a best-seller manga one day,” you mused.
‘Isn’t it a little too early for us to think about the future?’ Saiki retorted.
“Maybe. But I’ve had this dream for as long as I can remember.”
Art class was the subject you looked forward to the most in school. Not only because you excelled in many art mediums, but also because you took pride in the techniques you honed over the years of endless practice.
For the day’s lesson, you were to pair up with one person in the class and draw each other’s portraits. You casually looked around the room in search of anyone available.
From the corner of your eye, you noticed Kokomi rushing up to Saiki with an excited smile as she called out, “Saiki, do you want to-” a majority of the boys in class crowded around her before she could say her piece. Saiki walked up to you instead, asking if you wanted to pair up with him.
You glanced briefly at Kokomi, feeling a tad bit guilty for stealing her choice of partner while she was being surrounded by her group of fans hoping that she would choose one of them. But you couldn’t bring yourself to reject the pink-haired boy’s request.
Taking a seat from across each other, you adjusted your easel so you could get a better view of Saiki’s face. Despite the red tint dusting your cheeks from the intimacy of his peering gaze, you couldn’t bring yourself to look away from him. You perceived for the first time that Saiki was actually quite good looking.
You looked down at your page so you could sketch his appearance: the antennae on his head, his green glasses, soft pink hair, slender neck, smooth lips, chiselled face, sharp eyes. You looked up to take a quick peek at him again.
The constant blinking on his impassive face made your eyes widen in amusement and you frantically placed a hand over your mouth to prevent a snort from escaping.
‘Why are you laughing?’
“Because you’re blinking so much that it looks ridiculous,” you explained with a chuckle.
‘I have to keep on blinking so my x-ray vision resets. I’m trying to get a look at your face.’
You let out another coy giggle despite the heat rushing to the tips of your ears. He looked down at his paper to continue his piece with a warm smile barely present on his face.
You concentrated on your own illustration, marking down his affectionate expression before Saiki could return to his blank face, and showing it off as soon as you finished.
‘Not bad. Now take a look at mine.’
He flipped his paper over, exhibiting an intricate and beautiful portrait. The focused expression he depicted on your face while you drew him looked so alluring. You almost didn’t recognize it as your own, even though it was practically a mirror image.
"This looks way too realistic for someone who's trying not to stand out."
'It should be fine if it's you.'
You didn't understand what he meant, but his words caused butterflies to flutter in your stomach.
‘I need your help,’ A familiar voice spoke in your mind.
You jumped in surprise at the unexpected appearance of the pink-haired boy you had grown fond of. Your sketchbook flew out of your lap, falling right at your feet.
“How did you know I was here?” You asked with a huff.
‘In case you forgot, I can hear your thoughts. I know that sometimes you like to come here to the school rooftop during lunch.’
“Oh,” you uttered. “Well, since you came all this way to see me, what can I do for you?” You raised an eyebrow in curiosity.
'I need you to help me reject Teruhashi.'
You pursed your lips in uncertainty.
"Kokomi is my friend, and as her friend, you can't expect me to hurt her feelings."
'As my friend, you can't expect me to lead her on when I don't ever intend on returning her feelings. She'll get hurt either way. All I'm asking is for you to help me avoid her so she'll get over me.’
You knew he was right, but you were still unsure of meddling in a situation you weren't a part of, especially when it involved the feelings of your close friend. You looked out the window in contemplation.
“Why are you asking me? Mikoto would be a better choice.”
‘I trust you more, so it has to be you.’
You ignored the churning in your stomach as you casually threw your hands up, giving in to his request.
“I’ll see what I can do.”
‘Thank you.’
Saiki bent down on one knee, reaching out to grab your fallen sketchbook.
“I can pick that up myself, you know, or you if you wanted to help me that badly, you could’ve done that levitation thing you always do.”
‘I know.’
He held the book out, watching you through his glasses while he knelt by your feet. A saying Chiyo once told you a long time ago reverberated at the back of your mind: “Don’t you think Saiki looks like a prince?”
You gripped the sketchbook in his hand. Saiki’s gaze burned on your orbs as your image reflected off his green lenses. Neither one of you let go, even when your fingertips brushed against one another.
“What colour are your eyes?” You wondered.
‘Violet.’
“Major in Economics at Sayftee University and major in Literature at both Komman University and Ahvraj University,” you read out Saiki's school survey. “These are all surprisingly in character for you, but do you really have no dreams beyond living an ordinary life?”
‘I’m too busy thinking of ways to stop the volcano eruption to worry about my future.’
“You have a point there. Any luck with that?” you inquired.
Saiki shook his head.
“I guess that means we’ll be second years again.”
You didn’t keep track of how long time had been looping, and you found that you didn’t really care since you were already accustomed to the familiarity of your seemingly endless high school life. You were happy, even if it meant that the dreams you’ve been chasing for so long were slipping farther away from your grasp with every day that passed.
‘No, it’s about time I put an end to this.’
Saiki’s determined expression was embedded in your mind.
Your screams of disbelief were muffled by the pillow you held against your face.
You had vowed to yourself since you were young that you wouldn’t grow attached to anyone. After all these years, you had to go back on your word just when you were about to leave.
Now was not the time. Not here. Not with him.
Kokomi and Chiyo took it upon themselves to pay you a visit after you skipped school for five days without notice. The dark circles under your eyes and your sunken face visibly worried them.
“I’m in love with Saiki,” you murmured, gazing sullenly at your blue-haired friend. “I’m sorry.”
Kokomi’s face fell, but she showed no signs of surprise.
“I already knew that. It was obvious with the way you always look at him,” she lamented. Kokomi cupped your balled fists in her hands and looked at you wistfully. “He rejected me a few days ago, so you don’t have to worry about hurting my feelings. I think you two would look good together.”
You felt tears threatening to spill over your eyes. Whether it was from relief that Kokomi accepted you so easily or pain from your unfortunate situation, you didn’t know.
“I’m leaving Japan after we graduate,” you disclosed.
A dejected silence fell upon you three until Chiyo spoke up, “For how long?”
“An indefinite amount of time.”
“Are you ever coming back?”
“I don’t know.”
Their glum faces only worsened your mood.
“Why have you been avoiding me?”
You tensed at the accusing tone directed at you. Saiki’s piercing gaze was pointed at your shrinking figure.
No matter how much time had passed since the loss of his abilities, you doubted that you would ever get used to the sound of his voice resonating out loud, or the enchanting shade of his eyes, even if they looked dangerously menacing at the moment.
“I wasn’t avoiding you. I was just busy studying for exams and doing other stuff,” you explained weakly.
Saiki’s deadpan expression indicated that he didn’t believe your lie.
After a few minutes of squirming underneath his scrutinizing gaze, you gave in and told him your worries, “I’m leaving the country soon. I think we should stop talking to each other so that it won’t be so hard for us to say goodbye.”
You pushed past him. You didn’t know where your feet planned on dragging you, but you figured anywhere was fine so long as you could get away from him.
The familiar warmth of Saiki’s hand wrapped around your own, stopping you from taking another step away. You didn’t dare turn around as you felt your heart thumping wildly.
“I won’t ever ask this of anyone else, so I’m begging you not to push me away,” he pleaded. He placed your hand over his chest, giving away the heavy pulsing of his heartbeat.
You could never say no to him.
Memories of the last few years ran through your mind as you smiled at the nostalgia. You took one final glance at your high school building before turning your back on it, striding towards the exit.
You stopped at the sight of a familiar figure standing under the shade of a cherry blossom tree. Saiki must have known that you were staying much later after the graduation ceremony, all thanks to his restored powers.
‘Good grief. Were you really planning on leaving without saying goodbye?’ His voice resounded in your head.
You didn’t respond as you watched the wind blow through his hair, the sun illuminating the affectionate smile on his face, the violet obscured by his green glasses, and the petals dancing around the two of you as they fell to the ground. The timing was right. The mood was right. Everything was right.
He rubbed the back of your hand while you reached out to intertwine your fingers with his. The warmth that radiated off his skin felt like home.
He knew, and you knew that he did. After all, you could never hide your secrets from a psychic, no matter how hard you tried. However, you couldn’t bring yourself to tell him how you felt.
“Goodbye,” you pulled away from Saiki.
What was the point of confessing your feelings to someone you would never see again?
Paris, France was one of your destinations out of many. Most people romanticized the capital as the City of Love, but the only reason you were even there in the first place was to visit the Louvre, the world’s largest art museum.
Influenced by the art and the romantic ambience, you sketched out the scenery around you, deliberating how you could embody the city on paper. If you were to draw a picture of love, what would you envision?
Maybe, it would look like pink locks tousled by the spring breeze, or the reflection of your eyes searching for violet orbs through tinted green glass. It might have been the lingering warmth on the fingertips of someone who trusted you enough to share their deepest secret, or the gentle smile that was reserved only for you during the most intimate of moments.
Your love was constant and unchanging. You realized that now. No matter how much time had passed or how many countries you visited, you always found yourself thinking about home.
Ever since you were a young student in junior high, you had hated the thought of giving up on your dreams to pursue a flighty, insignificant relationship. Six years ago, you threw away your chance at love to focus on your aspirations. There was no point in thinking back on what might have been. You shouldn’t have.
You made a name for yourself through the many art competitions you joined, winning a few awards here and there. A while back, you finished your Bachelor's Degree in Illustration at a famous art school in New York. Things were coming together quite nicely.
Your high school days almost seemed like a lifetime ago. The memories that used to be the center of your universe, the laughter you shared with your friends, and a not so ordinary boy with psychic powers were at the back of your mind. Everyday life without the only person you've ever loved became the norm for you.
You recently got a job offer from a famous publishing company in Japan after you posted a short comic that blew up in popularity. The editor in chief sealed the deal with you after you sent him a promising draft for a manga you had planned out.
It had been years since you’ve been to the country, but your return and the nostalgic surroundings brought back old recollections that made you feel like you were a teenager again.
The chief took it upon himself to give you a tour around the company, showing you the work environment and the employees. He guided you through the different floor levels, offices and workrooms, and acquainted you with the higher-ups. But he had yet to introduce the editor you would be working with.
"There he is."
The chief led you towards the figure of a man who had his back turned to you. The pink tuft of hair on his head and the silly-looking antennae shaped into joysticks poking out of his scalp were noticeably familiar. But you couldn’t believe it.
He turned around, green-tinted eyes boring into yours with the same neutral expression you used to see every day. Even when you had anticipated who it was, you couldn’t help the breathless gasp that escaped your lips.
"This is Saiki Kusuo. He will be the editor in charge of overseeing your work,” the chief introduced to you.
You took the hand Saiki held out for you, shaking it courteously. His blank expression didn’t fade, but his eyes softened under your gaze. The warmth on his grip was just as comforting as you remembered, like the welcoming embrace for a loved one returning home.
Neither one of you let go.
"Well, since it's already after work hours, you guys should grab dinner and get to know each other. You'll be working closely for a while, after all," the chief suggested before leaving you and Saiki alone.
A hushed silence washed over both of you as the world disappeared before your sight. The image of a cherry blossom tree on a sunny spring day was evoked in your mind.
He sat next to you in a secluded booth of the café you used to frequent, away from prying eyes.
"What happened to majoring in Economics and Literature?" you asked.
Your body was angled in his direction while you engaged him in conversation. Despite the many years apart, you and Saiki had fallen back to the easygoing relationship you once shared.
'I finally had time to think about my future, and I realized that this is what I wanted.'
“You wanted to be a manga editor like your dad?” you prompted.
‘Not quite.’
Saiki was composed as usual as he turned to face you.
'I have a dream. After you accomplished your goals, we would find each other again and spend the rest of our lives together. And maybe we might even make a best-seller manga one day,’ he mused.
Your heart was beating rapidly in your chest. The words you couldn’t bring yourself to say on the day of your graduation poured out unthinkingly from your throat.
“I love you.”
He placed a hand on the back of your neck, closing the distance between you.
‘I know.’
Your lips crashed into his, moulding perfectly as they moved against one another. You gripped his shoulders, pulling him in as he snuck an arm around your waist. Your eyelids fluttered shut, relishing in the sweet sensation of his taste.
You only pulled away minutes after to catch your breath. His forehead leaned against yours, the tip of your noses barely skimming each other. The look of adoration in his eyes revealed that he felt the same way.
No matter how long he waited, your love for each other was unchanging.

~
On the way back from the East village, filled with the Gossams, humans and other alien species who had similarly escaped to a simpler life, I couldn’t help but curse at myself for giving in so easily to the pleas of a good-looking stranger.
Aiding someone merely for their physical appearance? How horribly unprofessional.
The voice in the back of my mind was loud. And curiously judgemental.
It had been over a full day cycle since I’d departed the clinic, making Poe vow to remain within the confines of his bed until I had returned. I’d left him with enough food for two days of my travelling, hygiene supplies, a drip running slowly for some pain relief and range of tools for him to attempt getting BB-8 up and running, hoping he wouldn’t have any reason to struggle getting out of bed.
The thought of his still fragile femur bone breaking and splitting the artery I’d spent all my energy on mending was beyond frightening. I worried about him every minute I was awake, imagining any number of complications that would leave me a corpse to find when I arrived back.
Bleeding, clots, stroke, infection, sepsis.
It wasn’t easy to slip those thoughts from my mind in the lone starkness of the Raxus countryside. There wasn’t really anything to look at except grass and sky, nothing to distract me from the worst case scenarios.
I’d convinced some of my old patients to join my cause, promising them better medicine and equipment if I was only able to have a comm-tower to order everything I needed. It didn’t seem like lying. The comm-tower really was my only link to the rest of the galaxy, and I would have needed it fixed anyway. Only now, time seemed to be more of the essence.
After spending the night amongst the locals I had grown to be familiar with over the last few years, I’d begun the trek back with the knowledge at least one problem had been solved. Some promised spare parts, others were going to follow my path within the next day cycle to get my comm-link back online. I hadn’t divulged all the story, at least not the part about this repair job apparently being a determining factor in the fate of the galaxy.
I hadn’t pressed Poe about what that meant exactly. I was used to the Resistance and their soldiers having somewhat of a flair for the dramatic when it came to war, after healing many of their battle wounds in years past. I knew how fervently they believed in their cause - that they were the only thing standing between galaxy wide harmony and First Order dictatorship.
I understood their hope of peace in our lifetime, but I’d lost mine a long time ago. Good, bad, they were just two sides of a coin that would flip for eternity, desperately chasing power for their own reasons.
In truth, I didn’t particularly care. I just hoped to live my life somewhat free from the burden of picking a side.
*
Before unlocking the clinic door, my feet aching from hiking for 6 straight hours, I drew in a long breath with a silent prayer I wouldn’t be walking in to find a dead body. With a fluid motion I turned the handle and pushed the door open, my head popping in first around the entryway to where Poe’s hospital bed stood. He immediately heard the latch clicking and shot his head up to meet with my eyes.
“You’re back,” he smiled, as I noted how much colour had returned to his face during my absence.
He looked so much better.
For the first time, I found myself studying his face, my stare tracing from his strong angular jawline to his high cheekbones, the prominence of his nose, the whiskey colour of his large cheerful eyes, his tousled deep brown hair. Then I took in his wide grin, shapely pink lips curled upwards to show perfectly set white teeth.
Stars, he’s so handsome.
In the muddle of memories I’d conceived from the night of his crash I’d not recognised, at least not during the time I was struggling to keep him alive, how attractive he was. And now with his health a far better picture than the last time I’d seen him, it was all I could notice. My heart quivered through a beat as he beamed at me, soon realising his smile was more a reflection of the prospective good news I brought with my return, making it settle back into a normal rhythm.
“Hi,” I breathed, walking closer and setting my pack down at the foot of the hospital bed. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” he answered, “The smaller burns are almost gone, and my chest wound is closed, look!” He pulled up the grey hospital shirt I’d managed to change him into before I had to leave. This time when I saw the nakedness of his chest and abdomen I couldn’t help but stare at his softly defined muscles, all tensing during his movement. He was right, the hole below his rib now sealed, a newly-formed, pink scar in its place. The chest tube was still secured above it, now redundant.
“Gotta love bacta,” I hummed. “I can take that drain out now if you like.”
He looked at me incredulously. “You’ve just done a 30 hour round trip for me, not even sat down, and you want to dive head first into more treatment?”
“I... uh... I mean... I just wanted to help you feel better,” I stammered.
Poe shook his head, smirking. “It’s okay, I appreciate it. Really, I do. But I’m alright, the tube can wait. How about you rest for a second and tell me how the mission- I mean, trip, went?”
I raised an eyebrow. “Two days ago you were begging me to get going so I couldn’t waste any time, now you’re telling me I can take a load off?”
"Uh, yeah… Sorry about that,” he grimaced. “Having some time to think while you were gone... It made me realise everything you’d done and were doing for me - a stranger you had no reason to help." Poe took a long exhale before speaking again, his tone serious. "I was in a lot of pain, just woken up in a strange place. It’s still imperative to get a message back to the Resistance as soon as possible but... that’s not your burden to bear. I can't thank you enough for your help, but I'll try not to ask too much more of you.”
It seemed not only had his physical health improved, but logical thought and patience had returned.
I took my cue to sit on one of the opposite hospital beds, letting my feet dangle over the edge to kick my shoes off, feet pulsing with gratitude at their release. “There’s some villagers coming tomorrow,” I started. “They will hopefully have a new comm-tower up and running within the next couple of days. I told them about your droid too. There’s some spare parts in that bag.” I pointed my hand out to the satchel at Poe’s feet, glancing at the L shaped table beside his bed I’d set up. BB-8 was sitting on top of it, head and body still separated and now unbolted at separate points, wires haphazardly sticking out in different directions. Falling back into the mattress, I let out an exhausted sigh, relishing the feel of the squeaky mattress under my body.
“I really owe you. The Resistance owes you,” Poe praised after a few moments of silence, as I heard him begin to rummage through the satchel. I held back a frown, even when I knew he wouldn’t be able to catch sight of my face.
I didn’t do any of this for the Resistance.
It occurred to me then I wasn’t really sure why I’d done it at all. I had always been a sucker for those in poor predicaments, hence why I became a doctor in the first place. But the trek had nothing to do with treatment or medicine. It was purely at the behest of this pilot, who’s charming appearance in the dimmed orange light of the evening made my skin feel hot.
“So, how did a girl like you find herself in the middle of nowhere on the Outer Rim?” Poe questioned, fiddling with some of the parts.
I sat back up. “I’m not a girl. I’m 28. That’s a little too old to be called girl anymore.”
Poe chuckled, the sound of his laugh both warming and positively thrilling. “I apologise. How did a woman like you end up here?”
“I used to work on Coruscant, that’s where I started my medical training,” I explained, remembering the glittering planet I’d spent much of my young life on. “Then moved into the war relief efforts on medical frigates scattered throughout the galaxy. Treating wounded soldiers day in day out took its toll, having people constantly injured and almost dying for a war they didn’t start.” I glanced to Poe's expression, seeing a glow of understanding behind his eyes before I continued. “Plus, there were more than a few times I felt a little redundant. The medical droids they have kind of... made my treatment obsolete. I wanted to practice medicine in a place where adequate health care was rare or non-existent. I wanted to help those who were most desperate, who otherwise couldn’t afford it, those who would actually value the care of a live human doctor. So I picked a planet at random, and settled here."
The random part was an utter lie. No one had cared about Raxus since the Clone Wars, and the First Order wouldn’t make it their priority to conquer Outer Rim worlds for a while yet. It was a quiet, calm planet with countless refugees fleeing here to make peaceful new lives. They wouldn’t be concerned about old, rusty equipment, lower quality bacta or no medical droids. They would simply be happy at having a doctor within a day’s trek.
And no one would think of looking here for a Force user.
Poe studied me in quiet thought for a moment, taking in what I’d divulged. “Well, they're damn lucky, with how nicely you patched me up. You’d run circles around some of the doctors and medical droids at the Resistance base.” He grinned at me again, earnestly, another attempt to thank me for my work. I felt the pit of my stomach tense, and it wouldn’t retreat, the thought of his smile lingering in my mind even after he’d gone back to his tinkering.
It had to be because I’d been in isolation for so long, why I was reacting so strongly to the innocent smiles and compliments of a man I barely knew. I definitely wasn’t used to conversing with men so close in age to my own. Most of the local humans were older, married with children, and I rarely made conversation around any other topic than their illnesses.
“What... uh... Why were you flying over Raxus?” I asked awkwardly.
His eyebrows creased together as he looked back at me. “Raxus wasn’t my destination, but I... can’t tell you any more than that.”
“Oh…”
“It’s not that I don’t trust you,” he urged. “It’s just, you know, highly confidential.” He seemed apologetic, like he owed me more of an explanation.
I nodded, agreeing the less I knew about the Resistance and their missions the better. “Well, you’ll be able to get back to it in a couple of days,” I insisted, breaking the awkward silence that had lingered. “Some time and a little bit more bacta and you’ll be like new again.”
“Actually, speaking of that,” he started, an uneasy expression now settling in his features. “I was wondering when you were thinking of letting me get out of this bed.”
“Depends on the reason Poe. I’d recommend starting your formal rehab tomorrow at the absolute earliest, otherwise we can get you up and walking if you need to do something… uh… specific.” There was no hiding the waver in my voice.
He laughed, louder than he had before, the sound making it difficult for me not to blush. “Aren’t you a doctor? Why are you embarrassed for me to use the bathroom?”
“Hey!” I frowned. “I was trying to save you from being embarrassed.”
He shook his head, still chuckling. “I’m alright on that front for now. I was actually hoping to use your refresher. It’s been a few days…”
“Oh of course!” I’d cleaned him up as much as I could before I’d left, getting rid of his obliterated flight suit and helping change into the bland hospital outfit I reserved for overnighters, but even to myself the idea of a shower was enticing.
A thought flashed into my mind of steaming water hitting Poe’s sun darkened skin, trickling down his toned body as he lathered himself in soap suds.
Woah.
Okay.
That was new.
It had been such a long time since I’d felt the fire of blood rushing to the lower portion of my abdomen, insides clenching at the heat so suddenly ignited.
Poe was looking at me expectantly, waiting for me to continue. I internally shook away the incriminating thoughts before they could be conveyed on my face. “How about I get that chest tube out first? Then I can help you to the ‘fresher?”
He breathed out in relief. “That would be fantastic.”
I stepped lightly off the hospital bed, walking shoe-less over to my medical trolley to drag it back to Poe’s side. And immediately, without me asking, he sat up and began a haphazard attempt to pull off his shirt, left arm bandaged and stiff, right arm enveloped in the cast I’d made and evidently still painful to move.
In a wordless reply, I helped him pull the fabric over his head, confronted with the image of a half-naked, strikingly handsome man in front of me.
I couldn’t believe I hadn’t recognised any of his raw allure when he’d been almost stripped completely bare by my own hands on the night of his crash. It seemed bizarre I wouldn’t have noted the strong, broadness of his shoulders, his armoured chest littered deliciously with dark hair, carved abdominal muscles tensed in waiting.
I swallowed hard, hoping Poe wouldn’t register my shaking hands as I prepared the tube removal kit. Snipping the sutures around the plastic, unsteady gloved fingers pulled out the tube as smoothly as I could manage, Poe flinching slightly at the sensation. He continued to look away as I injected some bacta gel into the wound, sealing it closed with a few new sutures and placing a waterproof dressing over the site.
“All done,” I settled. “Like nothing happened at all.”
Poe looked back to me and smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. It was obvious he remained troubled by the memories of his crash, and understandably so. I’d seen the same look in many other military personnel, the attempt to put on a brave face when images of fire, blood and terror pierced their thoughts. I desperately wanted to take his mind to a brighter place. “So, ready to try walking?”
“Absolutely! Lead the way doc.”
Ugh. Eventually I would have to correct him on that.
I stepped back from the side of the bed, arms stretched in readiness for when he inevitably stumbled. “Please take it slowly. Your muscles aren’t going to be pleased with what you’re doing after over two days of bed rest.”
“Sure thing,” Poe scoffed.
Typical male.
Initially he seemed to take my direction, moving his legs slowly from under the blanket, pain now registering on his features. He swivelled himself sluggishly to let his legs fall over the side of the mattress, breathing slightly heavier to push through the discomfort.
He was leaning more on his left side, right arm hovering over his thigh. Tentatively, he slipped his left foot onto the floor and shifted his weight onto it, pushing his hand into the mattress to help himself up.
Soon he was standing in front of me for the first time since we’d met, and even amongst all the burns, bruises, dressings and bandages, he looked impossibly strong, toned muscles wrapping his form.
He noticed the timid smile form on my lips.
“Hey don’t start laughing at me. I don’t think I could handle my ego being bruised along with the rest of me.”
“Oh... I wasn’t-,” I stumbled, quietly relieved he’d misread the reason behind my smirk.
He held his hand up in protest, grinning. “I was kidding. You’re welcome to laugh at the adult sized toddler learning to walk again.”
It was difficult not to snicker at his words. “Come on,” I encouraged. “Just think of how nice that hot water will feel.”
He sighed in agreement and moved, taking a hesitant step onto the previously fractured leg. I swiftly froze with anxiety, even when the logical side of my brain told me both the break and the artery would have stabilised exponentially by now. But the emotional side, the part that remembered the rush of blood that had exploded from the wound site, nagged incessantly at me, insisting that this was a very bad idea.
My eyes were glued to Poe’s figure as he shifted his weight deliberately, muscles tensing at the trigger of pain he was likely feeling, before he made a delicate hop to move back onto his left leg.
Even that one haggard step appeared to take a lot out of him, but he seemed determined, eyebrows already wrinkled in concentration. He continued the process a few times over, my arms still poised in waiting for the foreseeable stumble as I walked backwards. I couldn’t help but hold my breath as he limped, following me out of the clinic room into the hallway that lead to my office, the ‘fresher, and my living quarters all the way at the end.
His steps became faster, more confident, when all of a sudden, his balance wavered.
Reacting quickly, I stepped forward to catch him, arms circling under his own and around his torso, hands now gripping the muscles on his back as he crashed into me. I would have stayed there for a moment, my fingertips registering the warmth radiating off his skin, until I became fully aware where his face had fallen into.
I felt Poe’s heated exhale through the cotton of my white shirt after his face had collided into my chest, directly between my breasts. The twinge in my lower abdomen occurred again, breath hitching in my throat.
He scrambled to push himself back into a standing position, my arms releasing from around him, his hands clamping around my biceps as he fought to reclaim his steadiness again.
“I am so sorry!” he blurted, his face dangerously close to mine, only a small touch of redness visible under his caramel skinned cheeks. I knew my blushing would be much more pronounced.
“It’s okay,” I breathed. “I was waiting for that to happen.”
His eyes widened.
“Not that!” I yelped. “I meant you falling! I was waiting for you to fall!”
Poe’s face illuminated into a beaming grin. “Sure you did.”
I frowned in protest, but couldn’t stop the chuckle escaping. I shifted to face the same way as him, an arm curling around his torso, angling my body under his own. “How about I help you the rest of the way?”
His hand gripped onto my shoulder, the hardened squeeze making the tensing inside me ripple even faster.
Focus Alex.
Poe let me support him as he limped down the hallway, and I desperately tried to distance myself from the thoughts that swirled in my mind at being connected so closely.
Eventually we made it into the ‘fresher, a white and grey tiled room with the large, frameless shower enclosure taking up most of the space, the only privacy a plastic curtain that could be pulled across the entire spans of the room. I’d designed it with the idea there would be enough space to assist overnighter patient’s in washing themselves, since I didn’t have a nurse to do it for me. Yet, it still gave me the ability to provide some discretion by stepping out past the other side of the curtain, ready to swoop in if I was needed.
And that’s what I’d planned for Poe, knowing he was hardly the type of patient that was going to let me do anything for him if he could help it. Guiding him to the backless shower chair, I released him to his own devices and quickly pulled the curtain across. It was more for my own concealment at this point, needing to take a moment to settle myself down, the memory of his hold still lingering on my skin.
“I’ll be right here if you need any help okay? Everything you need will be on the shelf under the shower start button.”
“Thanks Alex,” he answered, his voice huffing out as I could hear he’d already started to shimmy down his pants.
Stop imagining it Alex. Stop thinking about him naked, a metre away, behind that thin curtain.
The sound of water rushing into the tile floor pulled me back into some impression of reality. I busied myself with organising my own hygienic supplies in the mirrored cupboard, desperately trying to think of anything other than the man hidden from my view, steam swirling around his figure, water dribbling down his bare skin. From behind the screen I heard a pleasant moan leave him, obviously enjoying the hot water battering into his aching muscles for the first time in days.
And with that sound I felt a twinge between my legs, heat swelling and rippling outwards through my body.
Stars, that was... hot.
It felt so unprofessional, to be tantalized by the thought of a man, a patient, in the middle of such a basic act of human hygiene. But I couldn’t deny he was more attractive than any patient I’d ever had in my life, and the thought of ripping open the curtain so I could join him was suddenly the most tempting thing in the galaxy.
I locked my hands onto the basin that stood in front of me, trying not to be overwhelmed by the sound of Poe lathering soap between his hands, then sliding over an unseen portion of his body.
It was then I started to pace, hoping the repetitive movement would stop me ruminating over the indecent notions my mind was conjuring. Minutes ticked by too slowly as I waited for him to finish his routine, begging for the irresistible pull of craving to be released from me.
“Hey Alex?” Poe suddenly called.
“What's wrong?” I squeaked, cursing at myself for sounding so startled.
“I actually need some help.”
Oh maker, why do you do this to me?
I swallowed hard. “Y-yeah. Sure. Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” he began, voice sounding a little forced. “It’s just... with my left arm still bandaged, and my right arm still in the cast, I can’t wash my hair. I know it’s a little strange, but could you help me out?”
My heart ricocheted inside my rib cage, frolicking at the thought of seeing him soaked in water, fingers raking through his dampened hair.
Come on Alex, try to keep at least one shred of professionalism.
“Sure,” I agreed, a more competent tone saturating my voice as I withheld my internal fluttering. “Make yourself… uh… decent, and I’ll open the curtain.”
I heard Poe’s movement as he reached for one of the towels hanging on the rail nearby and wrapped it around his lower body. The flowing water soon came to a stop, the sudden silence making me feel uneasy.
“Ready.”
I placed myself in front of the curtain between us, his stature only barely visible through the clouded screen. My jaw was locked as I took a deep breath through my nose, meditating in thought, frantically clawing at a sense of calm.
Then I reached towards the plastic, clenched my hand around it, and pulled.

svt written masterlist || main masterlist
You sat in your apartment opening the box you received from the mail today. Jun had helped you plan this date for Minghao for his birthday and this item would complete the whole date. You pulled out the lanterns that were in a plastic bag and scanned them.
“Perfect,” You place them carefully in the picnic basket, finally set for your date with Minghao tomorrow. You heard your phone buzz on the table.
Minghao : hi yn, what you up to?
You smiled at his text, grateful that he took the time to text you even with his busy schedule
You : i am currently preparing for our date tomorrow :D
Minghao : ooo how exciting. can i know what you have planned??
You : you should know the answer to that question
Minghao rolled his eyes as he stared at his screen. Of course you would turn the tables on him, he always made your dates a surprise.
Minghao : no fair :(
You : how is this not fair??
Minghao : cuz i want to know lol.
You contemplated but stood your ground; you can’t tell him.
You : guess you just have to find out tomorrow.
Minghao sighed, giving up on attempting to find out what you have planned.
Minghao : fine. but don’t think ill tell you what i have planned for your birthday.
You : yeah yeah i know. dont you still have practice?
He looked at the clock in the practice room and then to some of his members who were sitting on the floor or standing.
Minghao : yeah i should probably get going. its late too, you should sleep.
You : i will dont worry. stay safe and dont push yourself.
Minghao : i wont. goodnight my love, i love you.
You : i love you too.
You locked your phone and took the basket, placing it on the kitchen counter. Tomorrow was going to be an eventful day.
~
You placed the basket with all the supplies you needed in the trunk of your car, deciding to make it a surprise. Taking the other basket that you prepared this morning with various types of food, you put it in the backseat behind the drivers side. Getting in, you started the car and headed to Minghao’s dorm.
You tapped the wheel in excitement, you finally get to have some part of the day with Minghao before his birthday. It was November 6th, so it wasn’t exactly his birthday, but you did get to have him until midnight and that’s all that counts. And it made your plan perfect.
You got to the parking garage and texted your boyfriend that you were downstairs waiting. After 5 minutes, you see the elevator open and Minghao step out, looking as handsome as ever.
He approached the car and got into the passenger seat, giving you a quick kiss. “Hi,” he smiled at you, “Hi,” you smiled back. You began to pull out of the building, picking up a small conversation with each other.
“How was the drive?” You turned down the radio, “Same as usual, smooth, nothing wrong, I was safe.” He smiled, happy that you had a decent ride, “That’s good. So, where are we going?”
You took your eyes off the road to look at him for a split second before focusing back on the road. A grin creeped onto your face, “You’ll find out soon Hao. Be patient, you’ll love it.”
“No, I know I’ll love it, I just have to let my manager know because of protocol,” You sighed, “Is that really the reason?” He looked outside the window, playing with his rings, “Half of it, they told me to have fun.”
You smiled and turned up the radio, “Shut up and enjoy the ride baby. Trust, you’ll enjoy it more.”
~
“This is nice,” Minghao sighed beside you on the picnic blanket. “Yeah it is.”
All the food in the basket was empty, mainly Minghao devouring most of it. “So, what are we gonna do now?” You looked at the time on your phone. Sun sets at 6:45 and it’s 3:50. You have three hours for what you have planned so it should be enough.
“I’ll be right back, I have to get something.” You got up quickly and retrieved the extra basket that was in the trunk. You returned to Minghao, “Ta da!”
“More food??” You laughed and sat down in your place, “No, an activity. Jun actually helped me with the idea.” You opened up the basket, taking out of the things you packed inside, “What is this YN?” He picked up one of the lanterns.
“It’s a lantern. I packed all these art supplies so we could decorate them and light them up and release them. Originally, I wanted to do it at midnight because that’s when your actual birthday is, but the timing wasn’t right, and plus it’s dangerous during nighttime.”
He looked at you with his mouth agape, “That’s so,,, thoughtful. I can’t believe you came up with this.”
“Actually Jun-” “-let’s just give you the credit for now.” You smiled at him as he leaned over and kissed you on the lips. You held his face in place as his right hand was planted in between the two of you so he wouldn’t lose balance. Pulling away, you smiled at each other, “Happy Birthday my love.”
“Thank you, I love you so much. Now! Let's get to painting!”
~
“My lantern looks like crap oh my god,” you looked at the blue blob on your cylinder object. “I’m sure it looks fine YN, just keep going.” You put down the paint brush and looked at your boyfriend.
He’s been in ‘The8’ mode ever since you two started painting. He didn’t want you to see what he was making, so it became a rule that when you both finish, that’s when you present your pieces to each other.
“I don’t know why you’re not letting me see yours, it’s not like I haven’t seen you paint before.” You continued to try and make your blob look presentable by drawing a happy face, “You know, when you took me out here in like the middle of nowhere, I thought you would’ve killed me, broken up with me and left me here to starve, or go cloud watching.”
You looked at him with a weird face, “Well for one thing, there are no clouds today. And two, I wouldn’t have let you starve, that’s too painful.” You finally looked up at you, “So you would’ve killed me?”
You purse your lips, “Would you rather starve to death?” He rolled his eyes and looked back down at his artwork.
“I get that Jun helped you with this, but like, how did the idea come about?” You painted mindlessly while pondering on an answer, “Well I thought of you and what you would like, even if you said anything. But I just thought about what you meant to me, like how lanterns are bright when you light them up, and when you release them, they float. It’s a really bad metaphor, but you’re like my lantern. You’re the light of my life and every time I’m with you, I’m always on cloud nine. Plus it fits with your culture.”
He was looking at you when you tried to sneak a peek at his lantern. “I’m gonna pretend I didn’t just see you try to look at my lantern. But besides the point, that was really cheesy, but I love you.” You smiled and put down the brush.
“Well, I’m done with mine.” You looked at him, seeing him also set down his brush, “Me too. Do we let it dry and assemble it?” You contemplated on your answer for a bit, “Uhh, I could probably assemble mine because it looks like trash anyway, but if you like yours, let it dry a little and then assemble it.”
~
Minghao just finished assembling his lantern after it dried for a bit. It was currently 6:50, the sky was just turning into various shades of orange, pink and purple. “Okay, wanna see mine now?” You looked at your boyfriend and he held his lantern behind his back, “Show me.”
He brought it in front of him and lifted it up, slowly turning it to see the details that he drew on. “Wow, it looks beautiful, I can’t really see it.”
He brought it back down and signaled for you to scoot closer, “This here, is the bouquet of your favorite flower that I got you for Valentines Day,” You smiled as he turned it a little to move to the next picture, “This is the tree that we sat by on one of our dates. The one where a bird pooped on you,” You laughed and slightly hit his shoulder, “I can’t believe you put that there.”
“How could I not? It was an amazing memory. Anyway, this is a drawing of our matching bracelets, I didn’t want to paint it because I thought it would ruin it, so it’s a bit plain.” You shook your head, “No it’s beautiful.” He turned it to the final piece.
“This is a picture of us, or a silhouette of us. We’re watching the lanterns fly up into the beautiful sky together.” You felt a tear drop fall from your eye, “Aw crap what the fuck? Why am I crying?” You giggled and quickly tried wiping away the tears with your hands as Minghao laughed beside you.
He put down his lantern and pulled you in closer to him, “Why are you crying though, baby?” You sniffed, “Because this is a celebration for you, and I feel like I should’ve painted something beautiful for you.” You kissed your forehead softly, “I don’t care what you paint baby, as long as I’m here with you, it doesn’t matter.”
“I kinda don’t want to release that one, it’s too beautiful.” He looked at you with a pout, “but I painted the future.”
You laughed, checking your phone, “Okay fine. It’s 7:10, we should light it up now.”
You both got up, lanterns in your hands. Grabbing a lighter, you lit yours and then Minghao’s, “Ready YN?” You held the hand that he held out, “I feel like I’m in high school musical,” he laughed, squeezing your hand, “Keep it PG, we do not makeout in public.”
“Okay,” You rolled your eyes with a smile, “On the count of three.” You both gazed into each other’s eyes, “1. 2. 3.”
You both let go of the lanterns and saw them slowly float into the sun-kissed sky. You felt Minghao release your hand before hearing jazz music begin to play and feeling his arms wrap around your waist, swaying softly to the music.
“Of course jazz music.” You heard him chuckle behind you, “Well, you can’t blame me, it’s a perfect time for it.” You smiled and leaned more into his embrace.
“Did you like the date?” He hummed in response, his chin on your shoulder, “It was perfect. I loved it a lot, thank you for making this special for me.”
“Of course. It’s, well almost your big day after all.” You turned around, placing your hands on his shoulders and his on your waist. “Happy Birthday my love,” He smiled at you, heart filled with love and happiness as he looked into your eyes more. He leaned in and placed a soft kiss to your lips, taking your breath away. You would never get tired of this feeling.
Pulling away, you smiled at each other before he looked up, “We should take a picture.” He took out his phone from his pocket, pausing the music and switching on the camera. He held it at a low angle to get the lanterns in the picture, but also getting the sunset in the background.
“Say cheese!” Instead of smiling at the camera, you placed your lips on his cheek, him capturing the moment perfectly. “You sly person,” you giggled and quickly pecked his lips. You grabbed his phone and resumed the jazz music.
Hold out your hand, “I believe we were dancing earlier?” He gave you a smirk and took your hand into his before pulling you closer, the two of you watching the sunset and dancing slowly to the sound of jazz.

Part of the DontNeedADiscord Pride Week, Day 6: Parade
“I’m really sorry Administrator,” I coughed into my tissue. “It really is- achoo-! It really is that bad. But at least it came after I got all that work done yesterday, right?”
The slightly pixelated Administrator on the other end of the Zoom call did not chime in in agreement. She narrowed her eyes, and I swallowed, hoping the sweat beading down the side of my face added to the charade.
After several tense seconds, the Administrator said, “very well. But I expect you early tomorrow morning to make up for the lost contracts.”
“Oh d-definitely,” I sniffed. “I’m sure it’ll be c-cleared up by tomorrow,”
“It better be. Administrator out.”
Her face hung frozen for a half second before the call dropped, replaced by a black void on my screen. I cautiously closed the webcam cover, just in case.
Then, I flew into a frenzy, wiping off the makeup I’d used put fake bags under the eyes. From my nose I removed two stubs of tissue, and took in a glorious breath now that I was freed from stuffy-nostrils. The sweat was real though. I’d never lied to the Administrator before, never to her face, and the sudden adrenaline as I realized what I’d just pulled off threatened to jitter me out of my skin.
“Yes!” I said, punching the air. “Ha! I did it!”
The exultation was short lived, as my head whipped to where my laptop was still sitting open. The call was over but…better be extra safe and power that off before I go.
I changed out of the grubby, sick-girl pajamas, and went to my closet. Habitually, my hand went to one of my numerous purple tops, but stopped just short of the hanger. Was this what I was going to wear, today of all days? Same boring work clothes I did for the other three hundred sixty-four days a year? I drew my hand back and frowned.
Screw it. Who knew when the next time I’d work up the nerve to do this again?
I began shoving hangers aside, heavy with their deep whooshing as I sorted through dozens and dozens of painfully similar button downs. Sometimes there was even a dress! How original! So I just kept searching and searching until-
There! Right at the back: an orange Hawaiian shirt I’d worn exactly once, back when I’d been forced to take my government mandated vacation. I pulled it on with gusto.
The tangles came free from my hair—I hadn’t brushed it yet that morning in order to give it that “sickly” look—and then I was in front of the bathroom mirror. Biting my lip, I looked down at the facepaints I’d bought on an impulse, thinking at the time I could paint little flags on my cheeks, but now that the time was upon me I wondered if it was too much. Already I was wearing a Hawaiian shirt, how much more wild was I willing to get?
But, well, since I’d already bought them…
Fifteen minutes later, I examined myself in the mirror again, and gave a relieved sigh. Hadn’t managed to smudge a thing!
Sensible shoes, my bus pass, and then I was off.
The parade was vibrant, so much better in person instead of looking at YouTube clips later and sighing wistfully. My first day off to coincide with it ever, and all I’d had to do was a little office subterfuge. Now, as long as I didn’t end up in any photos, no one would know I’d been here at all! Everything was going to be absolutely-
“-Oof, entschuldigung, I did not see you there.” The man who’d just bumped into me adjusted his glasses. “Miss Pauling?”
“Medic?” I gaped. “What are you doing here?”
“I am here for the parade of course,” he said, gesturing around. He was dressed for it, his usual vest replaced with one of horizontal rainbow stripes. “As are you, I assume.”
“Yes but,” I stumbled over my words. “What about work?”
“Ah, the Voice? I simply told her I was sick.”
I felt my spirits sink. “Did you now.” I rubbed my face, only remembering to avoid the facepaint at the last second. “It’s fine. Great to see you actually. As long as no one else recognizes us I’m sure we’re-”
“Doktor! Miss Pauling!”
“Aw jeez.”
Pushing through the crowd to greet them was the Heavy Weapons Guy—even worse, Engie appeared to be tagging along behind him, discussing a brochure with a unicorn-costume clad Pyro.
“Did not expect to see you here,” Heavy said as he made it to our side of the street. “Thought little Pauling must work.”
“Could say the same to you guys!” I said, irritation creeping into my voice. “Don’t tell me you all just played hookey together?”
“Naw,” Engie replied. “Didn’t know any of these fellers were coming until we all ran into each other.”
“This is bad,” I began to titter. “If we’re here, then who’s at the office?”
“…Is this a bad time to tell you that Demo ‘n Soldier are coming at us from down the street?”
I whipped around. Sure enough, there they were: Soldier with rainbow-striped American flag tied around his shoulders, and Demo with his afro dyed a deep commitment to purple.
“Ahhhhh!” I couldn’t help but let out. “Why did you all have to skip work at the same time as me?”
“We all wanted to come to the parade, lass.” Then, noting my distress, Demo added with a wink, “don’t fret! The old woman won’t know a thing. Currently, I’m home in bed with the measles.”
“The measles,” I deadpanned. I turned to our now rather obstructing group. “And what did the rest of you say?”
“Gingivitis,” Soldier offered.
“Chicken pox.”
“Halitosis.”
“Cat Scratch Fever,” Scout said, taking a bite from a hot dog.
“Scout!” I demanded. “When did you get here?”
He shrugged. “Don’t blame me, I was just following Spy, seeing why he was sneaking around and crap.”
“And I told you,” Spy’s voice replied, “that I was merely following the bushman and seeing what he was up to.”
“Wankers.”
Maybe I should just stop turning around. Then my coworkers would have to stop randomly appearing behind me, right?
“That’s literally everyone,” I berated them all. This time, when I rubbed my palms under my glasses, I did end up smudging the paint, streaks of white and pink running up my cheeks. “Uhg, we’re so screwed. What is the Administrator going to think when she walks in to the office and sees-”
“Absolutely no one?”
Okay. It looked like I’d have to turn around in a horrified manner one more time.
The Administrator parted the crowd around her, not the least because her shoulder pads threatened to stab anyone who got too close. Everyone shrank before her, except for Heavy maybe because I don’t think he has it in him to shrink before anyone.
“Helen,” I started, then cleared my throat. “I guess you uh…took a guess where we all went huh?”
“That I did.” She blinked down at her employees. “I must say I am disappointed. Of course, I expect something like this from these idiots, but from you Miss Pauling? Couldn’t even engineer a decent structural emergency in order to justify shirking your work. At the very least you could have flooded the building, or released feral opossums into the ventilation.”
“HEY NOW,” Soldier barked from the back of the group. “Have you been reading my itinerary? Because it very clearly says SOLDIER’S DAY PLANNER, DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU ARE SOLDIER OTHERWISE I WILL KILL YOU!”
“…Are you saying you wanted me to fabricate an emergency?” I asked, perplexed.
“It would at least have been more convincing than nine separate emails from my employees, all claiming different maladies. One of which was,” she looked at her phone, “‘A Case of the Mondays’.”
“It is actually proven that worker productivity is up to thirty-three percent lower at the beginning of the week,” Medic justified.
The Administrator stared at him. “It’s Thursday.”
“Alright, alright,” Engineer butt in. “I think we can all agree that we may have messed up a little. Told a few harmless lies about medical issues we may or may not have. But that ain’t exclusive to Miss P here! We all’ve been lying ‘round here, and it ain’t fair to single her out.”
“The laborer is right,” Spy agreed. “The blame should fall on all of us.”
One by one, to my amazement, the others spoke up, or nodded in agreement. When I glanced up at the Administrator again, she had an eyebrow raised, as though I had somehow orchestrated this as well.
“I could instruct you all to return to work, you know,” she said. “It is only fair that your recrimination should begin there. However…”
“You showed up, saw how sick it was, and decided you’re going to hang out and eat hot dogs with us instead?” Scout asked.
She glared at him. “I still have work that must be done before the end of the day. But, it appears Miss Pauling has tripled her workload in the week leading up to today, she has effectively removed any urgency from the rest of your duties. Thanks to her foresight, you are technically not needed at the office today.”
“Aih! Way to go lassie!” Demo said, squeezing me around the shoulders until only my toes were on the ground. Similar congratulations were offered, everyone getting in a pat on the back.
“You inspire great loyalty, Miss Pauling,” she said. “But do not let this happen again.” With that she turned, and disappeared into the revelry.
“Wow,” I said. “I think I’m going to have a heart attack now.”
“Have one when the parade is over!” Soldier demanded. “Look! Floats!”
There certainly were floats. As the chatter died down, and everyone celebrated their good luck, I was left standing among my friends with a new appreciation, these people who’d stuck by me when it’d counted. They were a bit of a colorful bunch but, hey, who better to celebrate pride with than them?

BUILD A BEAR
“Teddy Bear!” Your daughter pointed, her head and arm peeking from the pillow fort you helped her build in your living room. “Big Teddy Bear!” She pointed at her father.
You chuckled, realizing that Jake has returned from running errands.
“You learned new words? I’m very proud of you, sweetheart!” Jake frowned, confused, as he planted a kiss on your forehead, then your daughter’s. Proud was an understatement. He would brag about how smart your daughter was at the simplest thing. Whether she fed herself without making a mess, drew an absolute chaotic art piece with her crayons or found her way to snuggle up in her parents’ bed despite being told not to, he was so proud. She amazed him.
It amazed him how she looked exactly like the two of you combined. She had his piercing blue eyes, but they had your shape, soft and cheerful. She had a bright smile like him. She had your button nose. She had that little curl in her hair that resembled yours. A bad encounter with the coffee table during a tickling session left her with a tiny scar on her chin, which looked exactly like one of Jake’s shaving accidents when he was young and innocent.
It amazed him how fast time flew by. Not even yesterday, the two of you were hearing her first cry and hugging her for the first time. It amazed him how much love he had to give this bundle of joy, while he believed he could never love someone or something as much as he loved you.
Rose repeated the nickname again and again. Maybe it was her new obsession. Last week, she tasted her very first lemon and kept screaming lemon all the time. Quite the learning experience, she had her father’s vocal chords that was for sure.
Jake shrugged it off and brought the mail to the kitchen table. He did not bother taking off his jacket, he kneeled with the two of you. He opened his legs and arms, hoping Rose would crawl and sit with him, but she just laughed and pointed at his face again. “Bear, Daddy is a bear!”
It finally hit you and you brust into laughter, leaving Jake in his confusion.
Rose pretended that her fingers were scissors and she mimicked the snip snip sound as she ran her little hand around Jake’s beard.
“She thinks you look like a bear.” You, too, brought your hand to Jake’s face and you stroked it lovingly. Rose agreed by nodding her head frantically. “You know, with the beard.”
“That’s not nice! I’m not a bear!” Jake pouted and pretended to be sad, which resulted in your daughter covering his face with kisses.
“No sad Daddy, I love my teddy bear!” She hugged him tight and Jake widened his eyes. He mouthed that she didn’t have a teddy bear and suddenly this looked like the biggest emergency in the world.
He scooped her up like she was as light as a feather, pulling out the cutest giggles out of her tiny body. “Get in, sweetheart, we’re going shopping!”
You told Jake you preferred to stay at home and clean around the house. He insisted he would prefer to have his princesses with him, but you gave him a wink. He was quicker to understand it meant you were clearing their evening schedule for something more entertaining than laundry, baby food making and bento box lunches binge watching.
So Jake got the little toddler ready. He let her pick her hat, her scarf and her mittens while he put on her boots. She usually hated that part, but he had this magic trick of singing a silly tune as he did so. It made her want to sing too, and forget about the heartbreaking moment her feet leave her favourite slippers. She opted for teal mittens, an orange hat with a pink pompom and a purple scarf with stripes. “She’s New York Fashion Week ready!”
You laughed, kissing them good bye.
*~*~*
Jake drove to the nearest mall and carried Rose over his shoulder until they reached the door of the shopping center.
“Where are we going?” She kept asking, from the moment she was in the car to now, when Jake was all scrunched over to hold her tiny hand.
“It’s a surprise, Rosie!”
“I love surprises!”
He made the walk to the Build a Bear store fun. He went to grab a muffin from a food stand and shared it with her, washing her hands so she would not stick them every where. He even stopped by a clothing store, taking notes of the pieces she liked from the front windows so he could get her new outfits. And when they finally made it to the store... She was running and dragging Jake along. He was surprised by her strength, but he really should not be. Ever since she was a baby she was strong like the Hulk, or like her mother. He liked to think she got it from you, his super woman with super strength and super everything.
“You can pick one, okay? And we’ll bring it to life together! Poof!” He added sounds to his explanations, catching her attention.
Rosie was impossible to control. She ran from one corner to the other, apologizing adorably when she bumped into a friendly employee. She would pick up a giraffe, no a cat, no, a dog, no, a dragon... Honestly Jake wanted to buy them all. He was aware the mall was closing soon, and he knew better than to torture these poor employees with an excited child who skipped her nap and would crash at any moment (or well, she would when he would stop giving her M&Ms to buy her concentration).
She finally made up her mind on a light golden bear. It came with a flower on its ear and pink paws. “It’s perfect, just like you!” Jake exclaimed and booped her nose. He let the employees teach Rose how to fill the plushie with stuffing until it was the best cuddle buddy in the world.
“How should we name her?”
“Jake!”
He shook his head, trying not to be insulted by the fact she still associated bears with him.
“No!” She listed possibly fifteen names that made less and less sense and gave the employees a headache.
Rose pulled on Jake’s pants, asking him to come down to her level, which he did. “What is Mommy’s favourite flower?” She asked and he answered.
“Daisy!” They both said in sync. It was a perfect name, because the bear had a daisy on it and Jake and you really had this flower theme going on. You, in fact, hesitated between so many flower names for your kid.
“Let’s show Mom your new friend!”
*~*~*
Jake managed to spend the entire car ride without a cry, a scream or a word of complaint until he accidentally woke Rose up from her nap by picking her up. She was tired and fussy. It was dinner time, but you and Jake decided it was better if she slept a bit more before. Your plans for the evening got bumped to tomorrow, but you could not care any less. Rose and Daisy were the new partners in crime and they were too adorable to resist.
“I have another idea!” Jake announced and set Rose down on the couch, inviting you to do the same. He disappeared in the laundry room, where he threw a soft blanket in the dryer with a dryer sheet. He then ran to the kitchen and prepared a platter of hot chocolate. He made sure that Rose’s was just warm enough and he placed a big marshmallow on it. He set the platter down and left again, only to come back with a warm blanket.
He turned on the television to play Frozen and sat on the couch with Rose in between the two of you. Your bodies were wrapped in a coccoon of warmth. And your heart felt the same. Rose quickly fell asleep, she did not even make it to the pat where Olaf appeared, and it was her favourite moment. She snored lightly, clutching on Daisy.
Your head was resting on Jake’s shoulder and you looked up to him.
If somebody told you a couple of years ago that you would live a life like this, you would have never believed it.
You have a beautiful house to live in. A job you love that allowed you as much family time as you wanted. A significant other that was nothing less than your soulmate. And you had this precious soul sleeping soundly with her mouth covered with hot cocoa.
You took a deep breath and Jake stared back into your eyes. The silence said it all.
You wanted nothing more in life than this: the taste of hot chocolate, your child being so peaceful and happy, Jake’s content face lighting up the evening sky and this never ending smell of fresh laundry. Your family was like a basket of clean laundry. So warm, so satisfying, so comforting.
Jake built Rose a bear.
And Jake, Rose and you built a home.

(slight warning: this preview is more than 3k words long).

JADE | QUIET
The story broke a year after their return as ninja.
Cole tugged on the sails of Destiny's Bounty, turning them northwest. The wind was strong; it wouldn't take long to reach their destination. What awaited them, he wasn't entirely sure. He only knew that its prospect filled him with dread.
The laws of chronology dictated that Cole was 3129 years-old. In appearance, he looked no older than twenty-one. He had lived through thirty-one lifetimes. Some were happy, some were sad, but most were lonely. Until now, he had long since accepted the latter as a permanent symptom of agelessness. It wasn't very often that he got to live his days surrounded by friends.
It crushed his heart to know this was the last time it would ever happen.
"I knew her once, didn't I?" said a robotic voice from behind.
He tied down the ropes and turned around. Adorned by his white ninja robes, Zane stood stiffly on the wooden deck. There was a familiar sadness in his eyes, the kind that came around whenever he encountered something he could no longer remember. It pained Cole to witness. They had promised to continue their lives as ninja to create new memories, not mourn the ones they had lost.
It would get easier over time, he assumed. In Jamanakai, they would no longer be surrounded by reminders of the lives they had once shared together. They would both heal in the village's snowy landscape. And then they would prosper.
"We barely knew her," Cole replied. His memories of her before her death were faint, a vague recollection in lieu of anything concrete. "Lloyd and Nya knew her better. We were trapped in another dimension when she ruled with Garmadon. By the time we came back, she was gone. It's a little worrying."
Zane tilted his head to the side. "Worrying?"
Memories of sifting through the ruins of a fallen building crawled across his consciousness like spiders, pinning the visuals just behind his eyes. Chunks of grey brick. Dirt. Shattered glass. He lifted the treasures beneath them with shaky hands.
A strand of pin-straight white hair, now soaked in blood and coated with dust.
"I knew the others well when we approached them. They were different, but the same in all the ways that mattered. Their souls hadn't changed at all," he said. He clenched his fist to keep his hand from shaking. "I feel like I'm going into this blind. The Jade Princess was never one of my closest friends."
Zane hummed. "Then why help her?"
His decision to return to Ninjago City was impossible to rationalize. Despite initial false appearances, Harumi had always been an enemy to them. She had lied to them, taunted them, tried to kill them—and yet, she drew such deep feelings of sympathy from him. There was no way for him to answer the why without going into abstract emotions that made no sense to anyone but himself.
"I can't explain it," he finally responded. "I just feel this is something I have to do."
Zane came forward and placed a comforting cold hand on Cole's shoulder. "If you believe so, we will stand behind you."
Cole nodded and swallowed thickly. Right now, it wasn't Zane or the other ninja that worried him. It was Borg Industries and what they would do when they realized he'd betrayed them.
The previous evening, the police had sent a memo to the Bounty's communications system. A sixteen year-old girl, adopted only a few years ago into a wealthy family, had slit her adopted parents' throats and hidden away somewhere in Ninjago City. Afraid she would hurt other people, the police had requested the aid of the ninja in her retrieval. Of course, they had accepted immediately. But they had their own ulterior motives.
The story was too familiar for Cole to ignore. Even without her name, he knew this was the work of the Quiet One. Harumi was well and alive and Lloyd's desperate gamble had more widespread effects than initially thought.
Last night, he'd dreamt of the building's wreckage. When he'd awoken that morning, he'd remembered the testimony from a family who claimed that Emperor Garmadon's right-hand had played a personal role in their survival. After lunch, he'd made his final decision about what he would do when he reached Ninjago City.
He would find Princess Harumi. And then, he would let her go before any of the police's nindroids could take her away to the Kryptarium.
The police didn't know she was a reincarnation. Cole planned to use their secret connection to his advantage.
It was a risky move. A treacherous one. But he believed in her potential for redemption, and to him, that was enough reason to put himself back into danger again.
He just hoped that she wasn't beyond saving.
The city came into view during sunset. Its dark skyscrapers disrupted the soft pinks and oranges of the horizon; metaphorical spikes that cut into the delicate skin of nature and made it bleed heat and waste. Buildings stretched on for miles upon miles, an endless jungle of concrete and metal that had consumed much of the west coast in its expansion. They spoke to him in nonverbal tongues and made their demands ever so clear: We may trip, we may stumble, but we will never fall. What makes you so certain you can undermine us and win?
He could not answer their question. Doubt bloomed in his belly as the Bounty flew closer to Ninjago City. To help Harumi, the ninja would need to defy the police, Borg Industries, and the government of Ninjago itself—this was a gamble that threatened them with major institutional backlash. If they failed, they would spend the rest of their lives on the run. Nindroid agents would stalk them to the smallest of rural villages. Drones would shoot down the sails of the Bounty in the dead of night. Any reprieve they had found in their year of liberty would be lost to the threat of imprisonment.
They would become enemies of the state. Dangerous to the public. Wanted.
Hunted.
Autopilot kicked in and the Bounty lurched forward. They had begun their descent into the city.
Cole held his breath in a bid to slow his racing heart. Somewhere in the city, hidden away in an abandoned home or a dark alleyway, awaited the last reincarnation for him to encounter. Like Nya, had Harumi figured out she was a reincarnation on her own? Had she stolen her memories back just as Morro did? When they came face-to-face, would she recognize him as someone from their shared past, or only as a stranger from the present future?
The Bounty's thrusters roared as it lowered over the football field that acted as their temporary landing pad. When he looked over the edge of the deck, he could see many trucks and police cars in the parking lot next to the field. It seemed like the Commissioner was in a hurry to move things along.
The deck below his feet shook as the Bounty stuck its landing. Below deck, it was Zane alone who controlled the Bounty's motions. Nya would be in her room, getting ready to come upstairs. Out of all the ninja, she was the only one Borg and the police really trusted. Zane's memory loss and control by Nadakhan had spooked them, the other ninja were nobodies in their eyes, and Cole was a little too rebellious to be seen as someone they could depend on. Nya was their stable link that was about to be treacherously severed.
The hatch opened beside him. Nya's head poked out, and Cole offered his hand to help her climb the rest of the way out. She wore her gi and knee armour, but her hood rested at her shoulders. When she got to her feet, she took one look at Cole and rolled her eyes.
"If you want them to trust you—" she reached forward and yanked down Cole's hood "—you can't make it seem like you're trying to hide from them. I know you're a good liar. Put your acting skills to use."
The autumn air stung his cheeks. "You remember the code?"
She gave him a knowing smile. "If something is wrong, I say 'piano'. If something is disastrously wrong, I say 'Ronin'."
He put a finger to his ear and pushed down. "You guys hear that?"
"Yes, dad. We all heard," retorted Kai's voice over the channel. "Connecting to line five. Have fun."
Line five, the emergency line. The ninja were aware that for such a high level investigation, their usual communications channels wouldn't be safe. The police would want to work in conjunction with the ninja, so it was wise to assume that their voice channels would be secretly listened into by police forces. Line five was unique because unlike their other lines, it couldn't be listened into. Or at least, not until the police realized what they were doing.
Buried inside of Zane's original hardware was a transceiver for basic communications. It was this transceiver, as Nya and Jay had explained to him, that allowed Zane to hear sounds as well as emit them. "When you talk to him, the transceiver converts your words into radio signals he can receive," Jay had told him. "He digests them in a human manner, forms his response, and then transmits it back in audio waves perceivable by you. It seems complicated, but it's not really. Just think of him as a living walkie-talkie." It was this transceiver they were manipulating for line five. Instead of relaying their communications through the Bounty, they now had a much more personal short-range radio tower: Zane.
Line five routed its communications through Zane's personal transceiver. As long as they were within a few kilometres of each other, line five would transmit their words on a secure channel that could only be used by those with access to Zane's body. Thanks to Nya's purge of Zane from the system after the Nadakhan takeover, that number had been reduced down to a comfortable six.
To reduce suspicion, they would only use it in dire emergencies. The codeword piano, spoken over the main channel, meant one of the ninja needed help. Ronin meant that the police were growing suspicious and the ninja needed saving. A call for help over line five meant that evacuation was likely in order. He hoped it wouldn't come to that. They were being so careful—if all went according to plan, Harumi would be on the Bounty by the end of the night while they flew her to the moderate safety of the countryside.
At the edge of the deck, Cole wrapped an arm around Nya's torso and used airjitzu to float them safely to the ground. They crossed the grass and passed through a gate, where the parking lot awaited them on the other side. The Commissioner and several detectives were gathered beside a police van next to the parking lot entrance.
The Commissioner stretched out his arms in welcome. "Oh, how great it is to see you again, Miss Nya. Let me tell you, the current head of security is nowhere close to as good as you were."
She shook his hand politely. "You need to keep hiring reincarnated ninja. We're pretty special, you know."
The Commissioner laughed and offered his hand to Cole. "Is it safe to assume neither of the original ninja would be interested in the position?"
"Way too stressful for me," Cole replied with a smile. He hoped it didn't look too forced. "We're both pretty dead set on retirement, but who knows? Maybe we'll get bored after a few centuries and Zane will want to help out in the city again."
The Commissioner's thick moustache twitched as he smiled. "Then I look forward to your boredom."
"We're not doing the debriefing here, are we?" Nya cut in. "We should get moving. Or did we all forget there's a dangerous murderer on the loose?"
A nindroid opened the police van's side door. The Commissioner gestured to its interior.
"Of course. Climb in."
Throughout all of his years as a ninja, Cole had only visited the police headquarters a handful of times. His memory painted it as a crowded place, each floor in the tall building packed wall-to-wall with nindroid officers and human detectives. He recalled shouting and phones ringing, a place that was always loud and always busy. Tonight, it was eerily empty.
"Please excuse our appearance," the Commissioner said as he led them through the vacant halls. "Just about every capable employee we have is searching for the suspect. It's a very high priority mission for us."
All for one person, Cole thought. It occurred to him that they might not have received the full story in the transmission to the Bounty. What had Harumi done to warrant such a reaction?
Nya shared a glance with Cole. A year of masks had taught them to read each other's eyes well. In the darkest parts of her brown eyes, hidden by their feigned impartiality, was an expression of sincere worry. He was certain they were both thinking the same thing: with every cop in the city on the case, this was going to be a lot harder than originally anticipated.
The debriefing was held in a small conference room on the fourth floor. A sleek wooden table stretched across the room, its top covered in scattered paperwork and discarded takeout coffee cups. At the end of the table, three human silhouettes watched a 24-hour news station being projected onto the wall.
"Before we continue into the next story, a reminder to stay indoors if possible for the night," the anchor said to the camera. A photo of Harumi was displayed in a box next to her head. "The suspect is still at large and considered to be dangerous by the police. While the Commissioner has not yet signalled an intent to move the city into lockdown—"
"You look very busy," the Commissioner commented loudly. "Can any of you explain to me why public funds are being spent so you can watch TV?"
One of the detectives waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. "Yeah, yeah. We were just waiting for you to get here."
The lazy, deep drawl of his voice froze Cole in place. In the flickering light of the projector, he caught glimpses of the detective's personal features. Puffy, gelled-up hair. Trimmed eyebrows. A cleft chin. A smile that seemed to stretch a little too wide.
Really, Cole should have expected his return by this point.
Dareth turned to face them completely. "How are the ninja doing, anyways? Still okay after ditching us for a year?"
"We're doing fine, thank you," Nya said. Her hand touched his arm. She would take the lead from here. "Are you the detectives we're working with?"
"More or less," Dareth responded. "I'm the only mystery-solver here. The other two are just intelligence."
The female detective to Dareth's left slapped his arm. "I haven't spent ten years undercover for you to write me off as intelligence," she complained. She leaned forward on the table and winked. Her clumpy mascara brought attention to the sharp look in her eye. "The name's Violet. Nice to meet you."
The last intelligence took this as his queue to face the ninja as well. This was a face Cole was more excited to see.
He adjusted his glasses. His wheelchair squeaked as a result of the movement. "Cyrus," he said simply.
Nya flashed Cole a look, asking for confirmation. He nodded. Yep, it was the same one.
"This will be your team for the rest of the mission," the Commissioner said. He gestured to the chairs at the table. "Why don't you take a seat? I think it's about time we got on with the debriefing."
"Of course," Nya said. Cole moved to follow her to the chairs, but the Commissioner stopped him with a firm hand to his chest. "Not you. I need you to stay up."
Cole swallowed nervously. "Why?"
In lieu of answering his question, the Commissioner moved to the front of the room. The projector flashed erratically over his body. He lifted an arm to Cole, gesturing for him to come closer.
Nya gave Cole a small nod. It was safe to go forward.
The projector hurt his eyes. He looked into the dark corners of the room as the Commissioner clapped a large hand onto his back.
"As I'm sure you all know, the black ninja here is blessed with memories stretching all the way back to the unleashing of the Great Devourer," the Commissioner began. The hand on his back was more forceful than comforting, an idle threat that scared him more than Morro ever did. "Tonight, your debriefing won't be done by me. I think it's only fair that we let the expert take the lead."
Cole snapped his head to face the Commissioner. "I don't follow."
A laugh. It was a little mocking, a little sarcastic.
It was one Cole couldn't trust.
"Why don't you tell us what you know about the Jade Princess?" His hand trailed up his back, fingers dancing along the nape of his neck. "Judging by the presence of our friend Nya here, I'm sure this isn't your first time dealing with a reincarnation."
Just like that, the plan burned. The police knew Harumi was a reincarnation. The ninja's only advantage was gone.
If Cole had planned on stowing her away and then playing stupid, this was now completely impossible. They would expect him to know everything. If he couldn't locate her hideout, they would at the very least expect him to locate her corpse. Even after all these years, he could remember her original death bed in perfect clarity.
The Commissioner knew that Harumi's hours were numbered. With a case this serious, there was no way Cole would be allowed to operate without supervision. He had two choices: turn in Harumi to the police, or once again find her broken among the rubble.
His status as the only ninja with memories was being weaponized against him. There was no easy way for him to liberate Harumi and remain on the good graces of the law at the same time.
Well, it was a good thing he didn't work alone. It wasn't like the Commissioner could keep track of six fully-trained ninja at once.
"Harumi wasn't a friend," Cole said. He willed his voice to be forceful, channelling the ninja leader inside of him. "She was a monster. A dangerous, evil monster. My only regret is that I never got to take a swing at her myself."
A finger tapped Cole's neck. "You must remember more than that."
Cole found comfort in Nya's quietly terrified eyes. Her hand was balled into a fist below the table, and she seemed ready to spring from the chair at a moment's notice. She must have reached all the same conclusions as him.
The faint hum of the earpiece in his ear inspired his next words.
"Well, she was always a little closed off on the Bounty. But I do remember her being really, really good at the piano."

With all live performances canceled, this was truly the year of demo videos and home studio recording for me. These are 10 pieces of gear that came out in 2020 that helped keep me feeling creative and inspired during lockdown. In no particular order:
EHX Oceans 12 Dual Stereo Reverb - The Oceans 12 ticks all the boxes for what I’m looking for in a great soundscaping reverb. I used the Shimmer and Reverse algorithms in conjunction a lot when I was composing music for a film score.
Chase Bliss Audio Blooper - While I don’t actually own a Blooper, I had the pleasure of borrowing one from Mike of Baranik Guitars after NAMM this year. He made an incredible Blooper-inspired guitar and I was completely charmed by them both. Chase Bliss always delivers pedals that push me creatively and the Blooper truly hits the mark.
Cooper FX Arcades - I love everything Cooper FX has released to-date so the opportunity to access those sounds in one pedal via plug-in cartridges is just awesome.
SolidGoldFX NU-33 - I was asked to do a demo of this pedal for its release and ended up being really charmed by this box’s approach to lo-fi nostalgia. I’ve used it a lot for film scoring and highly recommend adding it to your collection.
Demedash Effects T-120 DLX V2 - I LOVE a good tape echo and the T-120 Deluxe V2 ranks up there with the best I’ve tried. This pedal made its way to me this Christmas and I look forward to making some beautiful sounds with it in the new year.
Hologram Electronics Microcosm - The Microcosm is one of those pedals where you should fully read the manual before diving in but once you put in that initial effort you’ve got a massively powerful tool on your hands. It does glitch like no other. Definitely worth the homework
Azzam Bells MP019 - I discovered this unique instrument through a post on Reverb’s IG page and immediately looked it up and ordered one. These experimental percussion instruments are hand-made in Italy and they’re as beautiful visually as they are sonically. I used it for bowed cymbal and daxophone sounds on a film score and it was absolutely haunting.
Echopark Dual Harmonic Boost 2 - I love the control you have over dialing in the perfect amount of grit with these dual boost circuits. I use it a lot as a textural tool when I’m laying down drones or bringing in big distorted swells. It’s one of the most versatile overdrives in my collection and I love that.
Fender Parallel Universe Series Volume II Maverick Dorado - I was smitten with the Maverick Dorado when I first saw it at NAMM. It has a lot of the specs that I look for in a guitar and the body shape with the Mystic Pine finish just blew me away. I hope that I get to use it live soon.
Polyeffects Beebo - The Beebo is one of those pedals that I genuinely feel is smarter than I am. It’s like an entire computer in one small touchscreen box. I can’t claim to have mastered using it yet but the sounds that I have managed to get out of it so far have been brilliant. I’m looking forward to spending more time with this box in 2021

HELM 2020 REVIEW
Let's get the bad stuff out the way first, 2020 was undoubtedly an awful year. I'm still not sure how to really respond to seeing a global pandemic bring the capital to its knees and everything I love and hold dear to a grinding halt. Our government fucked it's response, putting profit before people and killing tens of thousands. The Labour Party descended into farce with the newly elected leader Sir Keith revealing himself as a bland centrist with no opposition or ideas. On a personal level it sucked not being able to travel or see my friends in different parts of the world - or even the same country - who I am starting to miss a lot. However, I was fortunate enough to get through the year with my sanity intact. Music, art and culture once again being my main positive. I think I listened to more music than I have in any year ever. I read more books than I have done since I was a teenager probably. I also re-discovered the joys of walking long distances and am extremely thankful for living near a lot of incredible green spaces: Epping Forest, Walthamstow Wetlands, Walthamstow Marshes, Wanstead Park, Wanstead Flats...
Music. My favourite albums of the year.

A shout-out to Jon Abby's AMPLIFY series on Bandcamp / Facebook, which I contributed a new piece of music to.
A shout out to the labels where most of the music I listened to seemed to come from:
The Trilogy Tapes Iron Bonehead Penultimate Press Dais La Vida Es Un Mus
Gigs. Despite live music being destroyed in 2020 I still saw a few unforgettable performances at the beginning of the year.
Graham Lambkin @ The ICA, London Puce Mary / JFK @ The Glove That Fits, London Demilich @ Finnfest, The Garage, London Container / PC World / National Unrest @ Venue MOT, London S.H.I.T / Asid / Chubby & The Gang @ Static Shock Festival, ExFed, London
Books I enjoyed. Most not published this year, but all read in 2020.
Joe Kennedy - Authentocrats David Balzer - Curationism Tom Mills - BBC: The Myth Of A Public Service Simon Morris - Consumer Guide: Special Edition Luke Turner - Out Of The Woods Various - Bad News For Labour Mike Wendling - Alt-Right Baited Area issues 1 & 2.
Film. Three good films I saw this year which I hadn't before.
Suspiria (Remake) Midsommar Cannibal Holocaust
Podcasts. I listened to a lot of these whilst walking.
We Don't Talk About The Weather Novara Media Tysky Sour & Novara FM Grounded with Louis Theroux System of Systems Red Scare loveline episodes Suite 212 NOISEXTRA Social Discipline CONTAIN
TV.
Didn't watch a huge amount and what I did was mostly trash. For some reason I rewatched both series' of This Life, a British drama from the late 90's about a group of young professionals house sharing and navigating their careers. Very cringey and has aged terribly, but it was perversely fascinating to revisit something from that time in the age of the pandemic. Following on from this I binge watched the entire series of Industry which was entertaining enough. A programme about a bunch of horny bankers with what felt like a confused ideology behind it. It seemed stuck between trying to criticise and glorify the culture around the industry, but also protect the industry itself from outside criticism by portraying anyone who may oppose as an insufferable wanker. Currently halfway through Succession which is OK. The Murdoch documentaries on the BBC were excellent and a rare respite from their descent into client journalism.
Thanks to anyone who listened to my music this year also. Best wishes to you all for 2021.

1. My Nr. 1 lesson: patience. Whether it's bouncing through 30 seconds of severe turbulence at 39000 feet or slogging through 30 minutes of a interminable piece of concert music, one attribute I've tried to develop is the ability to see past the discrete and awaited ending, the exact framing of the immediate process, but put it into the context of a larger time frame. I've found that this year more than all others has demanded it. Breathing helps...
2. Books: revisiting old favorites from the realm of Thomas Pynchon and Philip K. Dick (both especially relevant), digging into John Lomax's portrait of Jelly Roll Morton, the works of Colson Whitehead, random things off of the shelf…
3. Composing: with touring off the table, I focused on that which needed to be written, some requested and commissioned, some spontaneously springing forth. Composing requires that one open the windows wide to the world, which at this moment brought in grief, terror, uncertainty, anxiety, visions of plague and pestilence and incipient fascism. Okay, now shut the window and get to work! How to process, translate, transform? The work can be a comfortable and obsessive cocoon once one learns to handle the radioactive materials and put them into the creativity reactor.
4. Beans! We have long been a fan in our house of the wide world of legumes but this year brought two stars to the front: the black bean and the red lentil. The black bean commands the lofty peaks but the seemingly infinite variations of dal surround it. Ginger, garlic, turmeric, smoked paprika, cayenne, onions, and olive oil form the basis then imagination builds.
5. Online teaching substituted for my canceled conduction of workshops in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. Between the participants and myself, we built a temporary but very congenial space online to share concepts and music. In addition, private lessons brought conversation and music with new friends in Germany, Italy, California, Australia, Illinois, Denmark, Pennsylvania, Spain, Florida, Brazil.
6. What started out as "stress baking" (before I even had heard of the term) soon became a frequent practice that yielded very edible results. The twins preferred the sweeter forays into banana bread and chocolate cake. I tried to find a balance between tried-and-true techniques and experiments in texture and taste with yeasted pumpernickels, multi-grains, and seed breads.
7. While not the same as performing 'live ', online gigs proved that it was possible to generate a surprising amount of adrenaline even without the pheromonal handshaking of a room filled with receptive ears. As a corollary, online recording collaborations with friends worldwide proved to be inspiring and a suitable substrate for sonic experimentation, exploration of new instruments, tunings, effects programming, structures. In these realms, shout-outs to Helene Breschand, Mike Cooper, Henry Kaiser, Tracie Morris, Mikel Banks, Dougie Bowne, Payton McDonald, Billy Martin, Colin Stetson, Jim O'Rourke, Scott Amendola, Roberto Zorzi, Jason Hoopes, Eric Mingus, Melanie Dyer, Dave Hofstra, Don McKenzie, Sergio Sorrentino, Veniero Rizzardi, Taylor Ho Bynum, Scott Fields, Bachir Attar, Karl Bruckmaier, Robbie Lee, Matthew Evan Taylor, Matteo Liberatore, Al Kaatz, David Barratt, Jessica Hallock, Kolin Zeinikov, Robbie Lee, Jeremy Nesse, James Ilgenfritz, Sergio Armaroli, Steve Piccolo, Sandy Ewen, David Weinstein, Jim Whittemore, Chris Vine, Werner Puntigam, William Schimmel.

Ten Things That Didn’t Happen in 2020
1. I didn’t write a ton of new music. Don’t get me wrong, I wrote some. I always do. But mostly I focused on my new YouTube channel, essays, and on getting old recordings released. I haven’t even been working a day-job so I thought I was going to write my next Ring Cycle, but I really didn’t find Covid inspiring.
2. Trump wasn’t re-elected. Cool.
3. I didn’t lose anyone to Covid. I am, of course, profoundly grateful for this. But I feel pretty embarrassed remembering group-texting ten friends in March, “We are all going to see a loved one die. Every single one of us. Don’t kid yourselves”. I can get hysterical, and that was somewhat irresponsible of me.
4. No revolution happened. I don’t mean to be smug or cynical, or to belittle anyone’s participation in the protests. But, as far as I can tell, nothing happened in 2020 that promises to reduce police brutality or human suffering of any kind. We’ll see. That burning Minneapolis police station was exciting to watch at the time, if only on an aesthetic level.
5. I have a stack of unread books I bought this year, just staring at me, with nary a crease among them. These include:
Adorno and Horkheimer, The Dialectic of Enlightenment (looks amazing, but I haven’t touched it) Marx, Grundrisse (it’s 1000 pages for fuck’s sake. Amazon also accidentally sent me two copies, and its double presence in the stack is just comical) Reza Negarestani, Intelligence and Spirit (the first 15 pages blew my mind, then my mind blew it off)
6. I didn’t settle into living in LA. I moved here six months before Covid and I was just starting to cultivate some friendships and play shows. This was quashed and I still feel like I still live in New York. I still barely know the layout of the city here.
7. No brand-new buzzy musical artists burst onto the scene, that I can recall. No new hyped micro-genre of the moment. There was just no way for there to be a hot new trend. I’d say that was refreshing, but it wasn’t.
8. Tyson’s return was not awesome. Two minute rounds, ended in a draw. I’ve been getting way into boxing this past year. This fight was a bummer. I’m looking forward to Mayweather vs Logan Paul (LOL) because we know it’s comedy ahead of time.
9. For three weeks in July, I didn’t do a single thing other than watch street fight compilations on YouTube and Worldstar. That’s just grim.
10. There were no school shootings in March. Apparently, this was the first March with no school shootings since 2002. Not a single 7th grader got a hand job in March either. I cannot begin to imagine what it’s like to be a kid now.

Work 2020
Despite Covid 19 lots of things actually did happen.
In Feburary I visited the only active nuclear plant in The Nederlands as part of my "Expanded Field Recording” project together with SML. In March revisited the Acousmonium at the Elevate Festival in Graz with an additional trip deep inside the Schlossberg recording old mining trains. In March and April I did two daily recording projects “Pending and Auditory Scenes” - both of Amsterdam during lockdown. In May did my first Zoom field recording workshop with the CAMP project. In June & July two research trips in Waldviertel, Austria with Franz Pomassl. In August recorded bells and organs in 10 different churches around Amsterdam for Jacob Lekkerkerker. In September recorded Kali Malone at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. Performed at Heart of Noise Festival in Innsbruck and A4 in Bratislava. Also went ice-skating for first time in 20? Years. In November and December I travelled to Jeju island to record field recordings for a project by Femke Herregraven for the Gwangju Biennale, commissioned for 2021. Did lots of gardening, released two tapes “Call it Philips, Eindoven” and “Zomer 2020” with Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson. NOW! Looking forward to 2021.

Yeah so sometimes you draw Perry the Platypus in the context of the ducktales universe and realize that means everyone else would be birds and stuff so you have to draw that too
Anyways, why I made some choices under the cut!
~
Phineas
I couldn't figure out how to give him a triangle head, my bad :(
Was originally going to make him a robin, but then I was looking for some reference
Stumbled upon Panchito
This man has half of Phineas’s hair and when I was drawing it came out looking like a comb anyways
So yeah he’s a chicken!
Ferb
Typically in Human!Perry aus they make Perry the uncle on Ferb’s side
So I decided to stick with that and make Ferb either a duck, beaver, or platypus (ignore how that technically doesn’t work it’s fine)
Wasn’t feeling beaver, so I got to drawing and when I came time for the tail I just went duck
Plus green ducks exist and are cool so it works
Candace
You know we have to get that long neck in when it comes to Candace
So my first thought was Ostrich
My second thought was swan but I decided Ostrich made more sense to stylistically make orange
So ostrich!
Yes I know Phineas and Candace are biologically related so it would make more sense to make them the same species
but consider, we don’t know who the father is and I didn’t draw Linda so it’s fine
(I know I also kept all the other people who are related the same species but shh its fine)
Isabella
She just gives off hummingbird vibes guys
Plus hummingbirds can be pink
Not much to say here I do like how she turned out though!
Baljeet
I wasn’t sure what to do so I defaulted to duck
again not much to say here
Oh wait!
When I make HDLW/others eventually interact I’ve decided Huey meats the group first!
And it’s through Baljeet because they met at some nerdy summer camp thing
Yep!
Buford
Once again I was looking for reference
I was like, Big Time Beagle and Buford kinda look similar
See what I mean?
So yeah Buford could distantly related to the Beagle Boys?? Maybe?
I’m not sure that would be an interesting concept though
Stacy
I defaulted to duck again
Even though her neck is long too it’s different than Candace because of her head shape
so therefore she is not an ostrich
Jeremy
Jeremy’s a different story
His head shape is MUCH more like Candace
He may not have quite as long of a neck (could anyone truly have as long of a neck as Candace?)
But it’s close so he's an ostrich too
Dr. Doofenshmirtz
We all saw Dr. Atmoz Fear in that one episode
You should KNOW Doof isn't against name changes for the sake of branding
So I just drew Atmoz Fear
They even say in the wiki for Atmoz Fear that he looks like Doofenshmirtz
So it’s fine I can be lazy
Plus could I really think of a better design than him? No, no I could not.
Vanessa
Almost made her a different species but then I didn’t
Once again it just kinda turned out that way
Ginger & Gretchen
Same as Stacy, so just a duck
then I defaulted for Gretchen too
Look I have so little to say that I combined them!
That's it! I have more for this au I'll post in a bit!

3D Wireframe Retro Setting-Process & Outcome
Shown below is the process in which I did in order to achieve my retro setting outcome on Illustrator using the perspective grid tool.
Firstly I opened up an A3 document and then selected the perspective grid tool and then used the rectangle shape tool with only a black outline to draw some buildings and a road in front.
If I wanted to draw the buildings from the centre to the left hand side I selected the left hand side of the cube as shown above, if I wanted to draw on the right hand side I selected the right hand side of the cube, and then for the bottom of the grid I selected the bottom of the cube.
Once the building and the road was drawn in I then started to fill the shapes in with colour by selecting the shapes and adding a fill, I chose black for the road and then a light pink for the left hand side of the grid and then a darker one for the right as I wanted there to be shadows as to where the sun is coming from.
Then I used the pen tool with a lime green colour to draw a geometric palm tree in which I think would look quite cool in my retro setting.
I then wanted my palm tree to have a glowing effect to it like a neon sign so I decided to add a green outer glow by going effect-stylize-outer glow and matching the glow with the colour of the palm tree.
Next I copied and pasted (cmd c and cmd v) my palmtree next to the side of my retro setting ready to place, in the meantime carrying on with my setting I used the rectangle shape tool and drew around the page with a black fill and went arrange-send to back to have a black background.
I then decided to change the colour of the road because when it came to inserting my wireframe drawing, which I did using the pencil tool with a black stroke and then going effect-3D-bevel & emboss and selecting wireframe and then experimenting with the angles, the road was too dark for the drawing and sort of blended in so I decided to fill it with a light grey colour. I then increased the size of my palmtree and then duplicated it across to the other side of the setting and then inserted my motorbike drawing in the centre of the road, after that I changed the background colour to a dark shade of blue because I felt as though it worked better with the buildings and palmtrees. Then I used the ellipse shape tool to draw a circle and then using the gradient tool to add a pink to orange fill and then I added an outer glow by going effect-stylize-outer glow and then selecting the colour pink and adjusting the appearance.
Finally I added some texture onto my setting by going onto google images and finding a old grungy looking paper texture and then inserting the image and changing the blending options to multiply so then the background has the effect and appearance of the above.
This is my final outcome of my 1st 3D wireframe retro setting and I really like how it came out because of how all of the colours go well with each other and the neon green palm trees stand out in the foreground of the purple background as they are contrasting colours and work together in harmony, I also like how the buildings are a light pink on one side and dark on the other to showcase where the sun is shining. My favourite aspect of my outcome is the sun itself because of the gradient effect used and how it has a pink outer glow to match the colour of the building as well as the 3D wireframe of the motorbike because of its overall appearance and how it was done with one consecutive line, but if I were to change my outcome I would try and make the tyres more symmetrical and not so sloppy looking.
For my 2nd outcome I started off by using the perspective grid tool again and going view-perspective grid-one point perspective-[1P-normal view] to change the perspective of the grid.
Then using the same technique as the grid before and then instead of using the rectangle shape tool I used the rectangular grid tool by going to the line segment tool and right clicking and then selecting the rectangular grid tool and drew grids like the above.
Then using the rectangle shape tool with a black fill I drew in some rectangles coming out of the platforms as shown above and then I switched the fill so then it was blue and then went over the central grids instead of selecting them separately and changing the fill and then I drew a rectangle over then and right clicked and went arrange-send to back but for the other two I just selected them and changed it so then there was a blue fill with a black outline.
Next I used the rectangle shape tool and made it so then one had a blue fill and the other one has a red one and then placed them both next to each other in the centre of the page so they split it horizontally, then using the ellipse shape tool I made a symmetrical circle and then added a gradient fill with orange and yellow and then went effect-stylize-outer glow to add a blue outer glow to go with the background. After that I then made my 3D wireframe by adding a new artboard and then using the pen tool to go over a photograph of a motorbike helmet in one consecutive line with a black fill and then I went effect-3D-bevel & emboss and then making sure that it’s set to wireframe and then I experimented with the angle settings, once done I then dragged it over onto my original artboard and then adjusted its positioning and size.
Using the rectangle shape tool again I drew some rectangles with a black fill underneath the ones coming out from the platform grids and then decreased the opacity of them and then went effect-blur-gaussian blur to then make it have the appearance of a shadow.
I then did the same thing to the helmet and I also decided to add a blue outer glow to the original one in order to make it stand out a bit more by going edit-stylize-outer glow and then duplicating it and changing the size and angle of the helmet to make a shadow below as shown above.
Finally I decided to add a bit of texture to my 2nd outcome because I felt as though it needed a bit of a grungy texture to it and I did this by finding a texture online and then opening it in Illustrator and then adjusting the size so then it fit to the page and then I went to the blending options and then changed it to multiply so then I got the result of the above.
This is the final product of my 2nd outcome and I quite like how it came out because of how the perspective used is different to my 1st outcome but I wanted to make another one to experiment with different perspectives, I also like how the colours used are very simplistic as well as the shapes in which have been used which sort of makes the 3D wireframe stand out because of its unique shape and overall appearance.

Eldritch: Chapter Two
Warning: Smut
Living with Orihime felt extremely alien and uncomfortable at first. He wasn't used to the hardwood floors that made the long claw-like nails of his toes scratch and drag on the surface, the plush bedding he sank a good two-feet into, the stifling warmth of a heater. His wings were entirely too large and cumbersome in the small apartment no matter how neatly he folded them.
One morning Orihime gasped and caught a lamp before it hit the ground- knocked over by a long tail. Again. He glanced at her and coiled it closer to himself, awkwardly perched on a barstool at her kitchen counter.
"Look at you. I really gave you random features when I was a kid, huh?" She sighed. "I'm sorry, they must be uncomfortable."
"You asked me to get the features you desired and I obeyed," he muttered, sipping some water. His claws clicked on the glass, dragging and leaving faint scratches as he adjusted his bent knees. "Since I'd received sight and other useful things from you, I had no grievance with changing my appearance. It's inconsequential."
Orihime righted the lamp and bit her lip, wandering closer and brushing a gentle hand over the black feathers on his back. Lean muscle tensed. Every nerve ending pricked and burned, anticipating her touch on his bare skin. It never came.
"Do you dislike it?" Escaped him.
She twined some lengthy wisps of fur that mingled with the softness of the feathers around her fingers, smiling nostalgically. "No, you're still mine, silly. It's kinda like looking at a drawing I made when I was younger."
Bitterness rose in his throat, clogging like mud- even as his body flared alive with her admission of ownership. "Yes," he muttered. I am yours. "You seem unexpectedly fine with talking to a 'childhood drawing.' Most humans don't exhibit this kind of behaviour."
He'd tried and failed to keep the hiss out of his words, the sting of being referred to as a figment of her imagination.
Orihime pried out a few leaves that had tangled in the dark fur, brushing out some dried dirt. "It's just like I told you, I've always been bullied for being a little strange," she giggled. "Daydreaming too much, eating weird things, thinking about stuff differently from other people. They mistook me...and thought I saw myself as better than them for not fitting in. I don't know why," the gentle note to her voice became quieter. "Just shows I haven't changed after all this time if I'm still talking to and seeing you. I mean most people would probably be fine with their brother's death after so many years."
He wasn't entirely sure how grief worked but did not know enough about the subject to object. His body stiffened and sighed as she touched a leathery wing. "Anyway, not to change the subject but I think you need a shower, mister."
Ulquiorra blinked slowly.
----
That was how he found himself being playfully shoved into a shower cubical. Orihime turned on the water, which hit the expanse of his back at full blast. He made a noise of surprise, claws reaching out and dragging over her waist and slicing the material of her nightgown. She merely laughed and tried to bar his escape from the cramped space by blocking the exit, "just calm down~ I promise it won't hurt you!" She giggled, gasping as the water soaked her as well.
He grit his teeth. Realising he was acting childishly to the unfamiliar situation, he held himself rigidly still.
Reaching for the shampoo, Orihime lathered her hands and worked slim fingers through his hair. Ulquiorra stared, watching as the material of her blue clothing became sodden, leaving it fairly see-through. It showed the suggestion of skin laying just beneath, the shape of her full breasts as the material clung to her, rose-pink nipples hardening slightly.
"Close your eyes."
Ulquiorra flicked his curious gaze up, but she was merely smiling, having not noticed. "The shampoo will sting if it gets in them."
And then he realised; she was not looking at him as a man. It made sense, since to Orihime he was not real. If she were attracted to him she'd never be able to bathe him so thoughtlessly. Intense green eyes slid shut, tail sliding to wrap around her leg. A security measure to prevent her escape.
As soft palms slid over his fur, wings and arms, washing the splashes of dirt away, Ulquiorra sensed reluctance the second her hands met his chest. "You didn't have this before," she murmured, voice barely heard over the sound of the spray. His eyes cracked open, breath hissing out of mismatched lips. Her fingers glided around the hollow hole.
Heat hooked low in his stomach. "No, I did not," he thought for a moment. "But it's always been there, beneath the surface."
Orihime's brows drew together, "I really should have given you a heart. This is just cruel."
She continued bathing him, her body occasionally pressing and dragging lightly, torturously against his. Ulquiorra didn't know why his gut kept tightening but something was happening to him. It was like he'd flown for miles in a single few seconds, limbs burning, breath quickening.
"Maybe you could get a heart," she was musing. "Like a pig's one. They're meant to be similar to a humans. Oh! Dummy," she knocked her head with her fist. "You could get a heart from the hospital. There are organ donors, that's a thing."
"You told me never to steal," he pointed out, panting a little. Sweat on his brow mingled with the water running down his chin and brow. It was becoming difficult to think of anything else but pulling her body closer and moving against it. For some reason he wanted to taste her.
Orihime was biting her lip in that maddening way- and he drew closer, leaning down until they were nose to nose. "And I do not want just anyone's heart."
Her cheeks reddened, lush body stiffening against his. Those captivating eyes widened, roving over his face questioningly.
Good, he thought. Look at me.
Orihime broke the moment by giggling a touch nervously, patting his arm. "I-um...better leave you to it. You've got the hang of things now and I need to dry off if I'm going to make it on time for school."
The thin tail shifted and tightened around her leg, holding her in place. Ulquiorra stared, catching the moment she noticed.
"Let go, Ulquiorra." Her voice was soft.
Reluctantly, he obeyed, watching as she eased away and flashed a smile that said she'd already forgiven his slip.
Ulquiorra felt the cold attack his skin much more brutally than any rainstorm or blizzard he'd experienced before. That same hunger returned, causing him to place a hand over the gaping emptiness in his chest.
----
During the hours that she went to school, Ulquiorra couldn't help his curious mind. He opened draws, tested light switches, read the food magazines she'd stored, brushed up on sex education and puberty, learned how some electrical appliances worked, watched documentaries, found her diary and a stash of chocolate hidden under the bed- took a bite- and decided chocolate tasted too sweet.
The evenings were his preferred time of day. He wasn't sure why.
Orihime always came home in the late afternoon and would teach him new things he'd overlooked about the human world. Namely, hobbies. Video games, board games, painting, cooking, sculpting.
Sometimes he could hear her speak with school mates outside the door. When they questioned why she was suddenly being so secretive about her apartment, Orihime would deflect or say renovations were being done.
Ulquiorra's lips twitched at the corners.
One day, his curiosity prompted him to lean down and peer through the blinds of the apartment. The window looked down onto the street, sunset bathing everything in warm colours, including Orihime as she stood talking to her friends.
There was a girl with short dark hair who looked like an athletic type. The other, a young man. He stood tall and slightly lanky, with light orange hair. His expression told Ulquiorra that he was complaining about something. None the less, Orihime laughed, a blush colouring her cheeks.
Something pricked in the depths of his chest. His hollow hole thrummed, the edges biting. He grunted, touching it lightly. It had never done that before.
When Orihime returned and she called out her standard 'I'm home!' Ulquiorra met her eyes. Whatever she saw on his face had her instantly quieting, the happiness fleeing to be replaced with worry.
The creature blinked and wiped his expression clean, ensuring it was blank.
"Welcome back."
----
Ulquiorra learned what the young man was called, and it was the very name that Orihime had filled her diary with.
"...Do you desire Ichigo Kurosaki's heart?" He asked randomly during supper. Her cheeks bloomed with that same colour which churned the blood in his veins. She stuttered and waved her hands, laughing it off.
Ulquiorra glanced away, moodily continuing to eat the pickles in custard she'd prepared.
----
When night fell he would fly out into the world, trying to find answers.
There were sometimes different pressures in the air. Sensations fleeting in the sky like if he just let something click inside him- he'd be able to pierce the veil between the human world and the unknown beyond. Since he was neither human nor animal, he wondered if he were originally from such a place. If, perhaps...he was supposed to belong there.
Ulquiorra didn't understand why he hesitated. It would surely provide answers, possibly about death, resurrection and Orihime's brother.
When the hours crawled towards morning he'd return to her.
Orihime lay on her side in a sprawl of limbs, firey strands of hair dishevelled and splayed around her pillow in loose spirals. Her lips were slightly pursed, a small snore occasionally disturbing the quiet, the covers thrown back from her habit of kicking them off in the night. It left the contours of her figure exposed to his assessing gaze.
Ulquiorra swallowed, wondering why his mouth had filled with saliva.
Tonight she'd worn a loose tank top and shorts, which had ridden up on her thighs, the curve of her ass and exposed stomach causing a similar sensation he'd felt while in the shower. Arousal, most likely, from what that book had described.
Because of what he'd read about human behaviour, Ulquiorra was aware of how inappropriate it was to watch her sleep. Others would find his fascination frightening, creepy. He didn't care. He only desired to know what Orihime's reaction would be, as she was the only human who mattered to him.
The matress quietly groaned under his weight as the creature knelt onto the covers, crawling up the bed. He braced himself over the sleeping woman, staring with unblinking eyes. Despite what he knew about humans, reading about them, about touch, lust, sex...all of it was cold. Facts and figures.
Being so close to Orihime was warm. Images began to invade his thoughts, of his tongue gliding over her skin, nails dragging, cutting that ripe flesh open to lick and suck at her wounds and blood. Maybe bite down with the blunt, adult teeth she'd blessed him with. The fine hairs at the end of his tail glided up her thigh, tracing the shape.
And if...if she touched him in return, it would undo whatever control he had and spout lightning into his nerve endings. Just to see her looking up at him with want and open desire-
Instincts hazed, gut tightening as he heard a soft noise that caused his cock to stir.
Green eyes immediately located the tears sliding down her cheeks. Though she remained asleep beneath him, the woman trembled. Her lips pressed together, wobbling, more sounds escaping.
"S-Sora..." she sobbed, turning her face into the pillow.
Ulquiorra watched silently. He then achingly, carefully drew away from her, grasping the covers and lifting them to settle over her shoulders.
The creature then escaped into the vast reaches of the night, plunging himself through the resistance of the world and falling into an unknown one full of white sands, dead trees, and a crescent moon hanging in the sky.
---
"I found him," he said the next evening.
Orihime looked up from her cup of hot chocolate, eyes refocusing from her clouded thoughts. She did that sometimes, slipped away somewhere he couldn't follow. Slowly, the words registered, and life was breathed into her features once more.
"You have?" She whispered, voice thin.
He glanced away, discontentment churning. "He is not the same person you once knew."
"I don't care," she stood from her chair, gaze bright. "Oh Ulquiorra," she breathed, hurrying to him and taking his hand prisoner within her own. "Thank you. Thank you so much."
Green eyes slid back to her as though they loathed to look away too long. "Why is it so important that you see him?"
Orihime bowed her head, glancing at Sora's picture. She'd explained before that the display in her home was a shrine to her brother, one that she prayed to every day.
She then raised her hand and touched the blue hairpin's securely clipped into her locks. "We had an argument the day he died...about these. I keep feeling like he got into the car accident because he was distracted. And no matter how much I pray and try to assure him not to worry about me, I feel guilty. Like I can't move on. Or maybe something won't let me. Hehe, maybe I won't let myself~" she giggled in the light, nervous way she usually did to try and dispell sombre moods.
"And you feel that if you speak with him, you will move on?" He struck into the heart of the matter, undeterred by her attitude.
"I-I don't know," she murmured. "He did so much for me. Raised me as his own since he was 18. I repaid him by being a brat on his last day alive."
Ulquiorra shifted, fingers twitching. Slowly, they curled around her own. "He is called Acidwire now."
"Acid...wire..." the name sounded cold and cruel, completely at odds with the vision of her brother.
"I'm not human, therefore I can't say what is best for you. Your desire to see him is most likely misguided and will shatter the idea that you have of your sibling. Do you still want to go?" He asked, not curbing his acerbic tongue. Ulquiorra theorised that was exactly what would happen, but she raised her head, taking him by surprise.
Her eyes were hard as flint. It was a rare thing to see Orihime glare. "If he's different, then that just means I'll have to adapt and accept it. Nothing changes the fact that it's him. I don't care if he's not human, I'll still love him."
The gears in his mind rusted, stilling. His entire being felt anchored to the blazing passion he gazed into. Ulquiorra inclined his head, grabbing her close.
Orihime squeaked, holding on around his shoulders as black fur glided under her thighs, his arms supporting her. He then walked briskly to the window and squeezed out of it with her- leaping into the air.
A cry sounded out as she gripped him hard, and Ulquiorra felt frustrated with the subsequent leap in his gut. Large wings flapped and took them higher into the sky, the wind lashing at their hair and mixing charcoal black with fiery orange locks.
---
As stated, Sora had changed. However, the full scope of how much he'd changed could have been better detailed.
The...being towered above her in size. Orihime stared up at it with wide eyes, breath catching in her throat. A bone-white mask hid its facial features, dark hair framing the ghoulish face. It's more human-like red arms and torso disappeared into a snake body, supporting itself upright by coiling its tail behind it.
Those red eyes were the most jarring, filled with no light or hope, much like the sands and bleak landscape surrounding them. Every fibre of her being screamed at her to run, to leave the terrible, desolate place that gave an odour of death.
Setting her shoulders, Orihime stepped away from Ulquiorra's side, brows pulling together. "Brother?" She said gently.
Acidwire made a low, guttural noise. Dark locks hung forward as he bent over her, teeth glistening.
"It's me, Orihime. Do you remember?"
Her grey gaze roved over his face as his shadow swallowed her.
"...Ori...hime?"
She felt small before him but took another step. Her childhood ability to look past imperfections and create something friendly reared its head, and Orihime found herself smiling despite the situation, filling up with happiness.
The creature's jaws pried open- lunging down toward her.
Orihime gasped, a loud thudding sound filled her ears, sand kicking up into her face. The sound of bone cracking soon followed. Realising that she was unharmed, she shakily pried her eyes open, coughing, the sand caught in her hair and lashes. A strangled noise chocked her throat the second her mind registered the figures before her.
Ulquiorra stood between them, hands gripping Acidwire's upper and lower jaws as they bore down upon him. Her friend's foot was planted in the ground, no sign of strain on his face as he looked up into the second pair of teeth within the pitch-black mouth.
"...Trash," he muttered lowly.
"Ulquiorra!" She quickly moved out of the way, eyes wide. This wasn't going anything like she'd imagined, and if this was all in her head why was Sora- why had he tried to hurt her?
To her surprise, Ulquiorra grunted, shifting his stance and lifting the snake-like creature's jaws back over his head- before tossing its large body into the air. The creature sailed away, landing a good distance away in the white dunes. A distant thud could be heard, followed by a roar of outrage.
Black wings unfolded, tail swishing with agitation. Orihime grasped his arm suddenly. "Why...did he try to hurt us?" She murmured.
"I told you he was changed," was his dispassionate response, features cold and blank as ever. Except for those eyes. They burned with a colour more vibrant than she could recall seeing before, leaking into something new. "He's...like me now."
Orihime's heart lurched and she gripped tighter. "You're nothing alike!" Her voice became sharp even as she thought of the hollow holes in their chests. She couldn't accept the idea of her friend she'd played with in the woods turning on her in such a way. To try and devour her. "Don't say that."
"Sister!" White sands were spitting up into the air, something beneath them racing towards them at a breakneck speed. "Orihime, come with me. We can be together now! Die. Stay with me!"
She turned to Ulquiorra with wide eyes, "run away! I don't want you getting hurt!"
"The first order is quite impossible, but I'll endeavour to follow the latter," he muttered evenly, just as jaws burst forth from the ground aiming straight for Orihime.
A black wing swung out, slamming into Acidwire's neck and pushing the attack off course. He then leapt into the air after it.
-----
Ulquiorra hit the ground standing, skidding on his heels and looking up at Sora Inoue as he followed, snarling with bloodlust. Sensing energy beneath the sand- Ulquiorra thrust his talons into the mound, gripping bone and yanking it to the surface.
Another creature like them was revealed, shrieking in horror. With a hard twist and yank- Ulquiorra broke off one of its porcelain horns and pressed it to the side of his skull.
Bone weaved and connected itself, it's twin building on the other side of his head until large horns appeared. They struck out towards the heavens- in time for Sora's body to impale itself upon them mid-leap. The horns pierced through tough scales, causing him to cry out loudly.
Ulquiorra's gaze brightened, something collecting into his index finger. Raising it, he needed only to let instinct click into place, before black energy burst forth. It consumed Sora Inoue's form, sending him sailing away and hitting the ground with a heavy slam, arms lulling at his sides.
This time he did not rise.
Orihime trembled from where she stood, slowly padding over the sands and approaching the body.
It trembled and shook a little, coughing. Her hand flew to her mouth, tears collecting in her eyes.
The mask had broken in half, revealing her brother's face beneath it.
"I-I'm sor...ry...sis..." blood curdled, escaping the corner his mouth. He coughed, some drops landing at her feet. A gaping, singed hole from Ulquiorra's power had devastated his chest, leaving his arms and neck barely connected to his torso.
Orihime knelt next to him, leaning down and hugging his lifeless jaws.
When she heard footsteps approaching behind her, the girl turned, cheeks stained with tears. Her eyes were hazy as she looked at the thick black tear marks on his own morbid face. The hollow hole on his chest now gaped wider, what looked like black oil spilt out from it to leak down his chest and abdomen. With the new addition of nightmarishly large horns, Orihime felt drenched in the shadow of a predator once more.
Instead of fearing for her soul, all that wobbled out was: "Why...did I imagine something so terrible?"
Those irises had leaked into blazing gold, scleras dark green. His tail whipped out, sliding around her waist and yanking her to stand, pulling her against him.
"Does it not occur to you, woman, that this may be real?"
Orihime shuddered, pale and cold. His taloned fingers were biting and hard on her waist. It hurt. She wasn't sure what was real or fantasy anymore. The things she'd imagined had always comforted her from the pains of reality, and yet they wounded her now?
Biting back a whimper, she steadied herself against him, palm resting against his abdomen when she suddenly noticed it. Wet, dripping noises coming from his right side. Orihime shifted and gasped, seeing nothing but a stump for a right arm. Black blood trickled from it.
"Ulquiorra! Y-you're hurt," she shakily switched gears.
His steady, penetrative gaze slid down to it. "Yes. Seems I couldn't follow your orders. It doesn't matter, I can-"
"No this is terrible!" She fussed, moving around him, hands fluttering up. "Oh no...this is all my fault," she grit her teeth, shuddering violently.
"The fault lies in my second of hesitance."
It didn't matter what he said, she wasn't listening, his calm voice a dull roar. Light sparked from her fingers, an orange glow hovering over the space his arm used to occupy.
Ulquiorra's eyes widened, attention ensnared. Gradually, bone, skin and fur collected from thin air and reconnected. They solidified into his arm, muscles rejoining. When the light died, he flexed his sharp fingers. Good as new.
"You can regenerate," he quietly mused.
"I-I guess so," she croaked, gaze dulled as she turned to look at the fallen body of her brother. "I just imagined fairies over it and the light followed. This is...so confusing."
His tail tightened around her waist. "You're like me," he said in a soft monotone.
Orihime raised her head to look at him, flesh ghostly pale. She slowly drew in close and slid her arms around his waist, hugging him.
Those deadly hands rested on her lower back, dragging up her spine and causing the girl to shiver. She was aware of him smelling her hair, but felt no disgust from it. "I need to heal him," she murmured, drawing away and gently prying his tail off around her hips.
Kneeling once more, the orange light spread over the gaping hole in her brother's chest. When it faded, his inhuman flesh shivered, a groan sounding out. Orihime gave a tremulous smile, recalling their argument as she touched her hairpins.
"I'm sorry, please be safe, brother," the words she'd wanted to say all those years ago flowed out.
Returning to Ulquiorra's side, she rubbed at her cheeks and took a steadying breath.
"Let's go home."
He considered this for a moment. "...Did you do everything you came here to?"
Hands drew into loose fists at her sides, "no," her voice wobbled. "But I guess this is what happens when you try to live life backwards. Try as I might, and no matter how happy I was..." she glanced at Sora. "I-I can't go back to those days at the summer house anymore."
The dead trees, sand dunes and crescent moon in the sky were the only witnesses to their silent departure. By the time Acidwire had drawn himself up, the mask over his face restored, Orihime and Ulquiorra were gone.
----
Everything lay quiet and undisturbed in the apartment as they entered. Ulquiorra had to break his horns in half, lest they scrape the ceiling. Orihime broke away from him and shakily made her way to the shower in her ensuite, disorientated. After stripping, she sat under the spray for what felt like an hour, legs going numb. Disengaged from her body, Orihime rested her cheek against the glass.
All at once however, she realised Ulquiorra wasn't with her. Panic erupted in her chest, and she stumbled out, grabbing a towel and half-heartedly drying herself. Changed clothes in her bedroom, she hurried out in her nightgown.
She stopped half-way to the couch upon bumping her nose into a pale chest. Glancing up, she found his eyes had yet to return to emerald green hues, remaining watchful, bright, burning gold.
"You're still here," rushed out, a sigh of relief soon following.
"Naturally."
Feeling a little silly now, Orihime brushed damp hair behind her ear. Seeing his steady, expectant look, a lightbulb went off in her head. "Oh...right!" She forced a smile, squeezing his arm. "What was it you wanted in return?"
Dark lashes dropped slightly, stare becoming half-lidded. It took her a moment to realise Ulquiorra was staring at her mouth. That gaze then slid down, fixing on a certain spot that his fingers soon rested against.
Orihime swallowed, feeling talons drag over the material of her night-gown, the pads of his fingers a hard pressure against her chest.
"My heart?"
He stroked the area with an almost reverent, yet firm touch. "I lack one, and yours is elevated above all other humans."
She became quiet, not screaming or running away, though he hadn't expected her to. The woman was strong. Her heartbeat drummed a little faster, but not at break-neck speed like those others he'd harvested limbs or organs from.
Emboldened by her lack of aversion to his touch, his free hand found her cheek. Claws dragged lightly over her chin, cool digits soaking up the warmth beneath them. "You won't resist?"
It pleased him immensely when she leaned into his hand. "You're so silly," came the faint mumble. "Or maybe it's my fault, for not teaching you everything you'd need to know about humans. I was a child though."
Fire spouted into his palm the moment soft lips brushed against it, heat blooming up his wrist. "There's more than one way to hold a person's heart in your hand. Not everything has to be literal."
Ulquiorra backed her up into the wall until her spine protested. His nose brushed against hers as he inhaled her exhale. "You're referring to sentimental emotion, aren't you? But there's no physical proof the metaphorical heart you speak of exists."
"The proof is in what humans feel for each other," she said softly. "What I feel for you."
Slit pupils thinned. His body became rigid.
"...Ichigo Kurosaki," he reminded her stiffly.
Something conflicted entered her gaze, honest as ever. "Ichigo is...like the summer house," she murmured. "I like him. I've always...liked him, but he doesn't see me, and I don't even know what would happen if he suddenly wanted me. The idea of him has always been so comforting. But what I imagine and want, it's just my idea of him. A prince on a white horse instead of his usual stubborn, short-tempered self. I know that. I've always...known that. But he was something nice to imagine, so that I didn't feel so alone."
Ulquiorra's wings unfolded, hands finding her thighs and hooking beneath them, lifting, forcing her legs to wrap around his waist. His breathing hitched, nose and lips finding her neck and gliding without really pressing down. He hovered on the precipice of something that threatened to ruin him.
"How do you know I'm not like the summer house?"
"Because I see you clearly now," she muttered. And it was there. It was there. His reflection glinted in those silver eyes. The first pair he'd ever looked into. "You...your wings, your tail, your tongue...I understand now, I got it when I saw you rip those horns off that creature and put them on yourself. You didn't get those other features from me, but you had to get them from somewhere, just like how you wanted my heart."
The image of him wavered and swam, waterlogged by tears. "I'm sorry I didn't help you live as a human. I could have given you a normal life."
"I'm not human," he uttered. "And any life with you wouldn't be normal. We have curry and wasabi together, topped with strawberries."
Orihime burst into a tearful giggle, smiling at him.
Ulquiorra leaned in, unable to hold back anymore, mouth crashing to hers. It was clumsy and hard, and to his surprise, she yielded after a brief noise. She coaxed his lips to move against hers, something wet and soft hesitantly sliding against his dark upper lip. Slowly, he opened his mouth, tongue meeting and brushing against her own.
Claws nicked at the sensitive skin of her thighs, and Orihime jolted- hips bucking. It caused a groan to hiss out, tail sliding, winding around her chest and squeezing the air from her lungs. Her breath puffed out and he gulped it down, kissing her hungrily.
"Your skin is soft…"
Ulquiorra's hair caressed her collarbone, causing Orihime to shiver in his arms. Her cheeks reddened as an appealing scent floated into the air that he hadn't smelled before. He broke away from the kiss slightly, "tell me what you're feeling."
"N-no!" She gasped, face scarlet. Ulquiorra dragged his lips down her neck, palm sliding to set on her navel and teasing lower. "The scent is coming from down here. Show me.." he breathed, nipping her ear.
When she shook her head again, teeth tugging on her plump bottom lip, he sank to his knees and dragged her down with him. Orihime squeaked as she was turned, falling backwards- landing not on the cool hardwood floor but cushioned by leather. Wings shifted beneath her back as she was laid down, the creature leaning over her and impressive wingspan rising up, containing them in their own personal cacoon that blocked out almost all light.
Clawed hands came up to settle on her hips, before one smoothed under her thigh, lifting her leg up for a better angle as he leaned down. Orihime made a noise of surprise, squeezing startled eyes shut and rolling her hips instinctively despite nothing pressing against her yet.
"You're unexpectedly wanton," his monotone sounded lighter, almost as though amused.
Her nightgown was hitched and yanked up, leaving her bare sex exposed and vulnerable.
He experimentally drew his tongue out and licked the glistening folds, soon sucking on her clit, talons biting into the nightgown. Gasping, Orihime threw her head back, arching into his mouth. Her ankles locked behind his head as frantic hands descend to black locks. Ulquiorra started and paused, unused to such a place being touched. His hair slid like soft feathers through her fingers, and ultimately he continued sucking, grunting quietly and shoving his tongue inside her. The woman in his grasp makes a curious noise, hips bucking up.
He watched her almost obsessively from his position, waiting for the moment she begged him to stop. The scent was impossibly strong, an intoxicating taste coating his tongue.
"Please, more," she whispered, startling him. For once, Ulquiorra disobeyed, leaning back and away from her sex and touch, dark satisfaction curling inside him as she made a weak noise of protest. His tail brushing up against her clit instead, sliding between her legs. Orihime didn't notice, too consumed by the sensations. The firm glide of his tail became a harder pressure against her sex, rubbing.
His hand slid up her torso to cup a full breast, barred from complete touch her clothing. "...It's firmer than I thought," he tilted his head slightly, squeezing with perhaps too much force. Her body sang beautifully with its honest reactions, her groan signalling her enjoyment as she rocked her hips against the pressure of his tail.
"I'm so close..." Orihime whimpered, squeezing her eyes shut tight. Grabbing his horns without seeming to think about it, she writhed and squirmed like a woman possessed. It made a low rumble build in the back of his throat.
Careful hands became impatient- tearing the material over her chest. A hungry mouth clamped over her breast, sucking and sinking blunt teeth in, causing her to spout gibberish, words and moans blurring into one another. Fur slid against her hips and navel, parting her legs wider as his tail rubbed quicker, gliding on the outskirts of her folds and flicking against her clit.
Writhing for a few moments longer, a loud cry filled the room, pressure snapping like a string. Her back arched, core quivering. Ulquiorra watched with undisguised fascination, sucking at the wound on her flesh.
The thin tail coiled, pulling away and coated in her wetness. Ulquiorra lifted his head and licked it clean with a swipe of his tongue, witnessing the moment her eyes cracked open and registered what she'd done. Orihime flushed deep red, glaring a little in her embarrassment. His lips twitched, rubbing his knuckles against her sex in reward.
Orihime panted, letting hazy eyes slide shut as she took in a few breaths. He then leaned over her, impossibly close. Those slit pupils pinned her in place the second she met his gaze.
"So this is lust..."
He braced his weight on one hand, the tail suddenly gripping her around the waist lifting, causing her back to arch, head dipping back.
Orihime sat up instead, fighting it- wrapping her arms about his neck. "May I touch you?" She asked quietly.
Vague surprise flit over his face, hand coming up dazedly to rest against her heart. It thrummed strong and sure against his palm. His touch then glided up, lifting claws to her cheek and touching the soft skin there.
Ulquiorra looked at her hands. "I haven't been touched before, not by anyone else except you."
He grasped her under her thighs and lifted her onto his lap as he sat on his heels, feathers and fur caressing her under her thighs.
"Me neither," she whispered like it were a closely guarded secret. She then smiled, causing him to blink. That smile brought him back down to earth. He held Orihime Inoue in his arms, hollow hole pulsing and aching with all that that meant, and for a few blind moments of pleasure, he'd forgotten how much that really meant to him.
Orihime kissed him on the lips, running a hand down his back to stroke the fur. His muscles tensed under her touch but soon relaxed. He dipped his head to her shoulder, just resting his forehead there a second, inhaling. Catharsis washed over him, arms tightening around her.
She felt so good.
Her needy hips squirmed against his, dragging one hand down his chest, the other lacing their fingers together, palms intimately meeting as she kissed down his neck. He inhaled sharply, the power seeming to make her giddy. It was a very nice sensation, having someone respond to your touch. Orihime experimentally sucked on the skin of his collarbone, squeaking when he rut his hips up. Ulquiorra then lifted his head- catching her mouth with his own. Growing more adventurous with his tongue, he moved it against hers and brushed it inside her mouth, running it along her teeth and grunting.
Something hard started to rub in between her legs, now showing from under the furs. A shaky moan escaped her.
"Feeling you respond, I think I quite enjoy it," he said quietly, wings shifting behind her, the thin leathery feel of them slid against flushed skin. Silver eyes glanced down, widening a little at the sight that greeted her. Orihime reached down, grasping his cock, skimming lithe fingers over the skin.
Ulqiorra jolted and hissed, resting his cheek against hers and breathing out.
"Does it feel nice?" Came her innocent question, cupping the tip and smoothing her fingers around the shaft. He rutted up into her hand in response, shoving her down onto her back, wings cushioning her and completely enveloping her with himself.
"More," he breathed. She was happy to oblige, stroking him harder, enjoying his enjoyment of it in that usual selfless way of hers.
Golden eyes practically glow, staring at her. Her hand pumped his base, lips finding his throat and sucking. Ulquiorra shuddered, leaning his forehead down and grunting. His eyes widen at the sensation, hips shifting forward continually. Orihime made a small noise, quickening her strokes. Her thighs rubbed together needily, getting squirmy due to his rapid panting and low noises.
Blunt teeth clench, eyes squeezing shut- before they snapped open and he shifts his hips back to drag his erection out of her grasp. A second later, and her wrists were pinned above her head via his tail, a pale chest braced tightly against hers as his cock rubbed hard against her sex.
"We're starting now," he said in a harsh whisper of sound.
Orihime's mouth opened to encourage him- but twitching hips are already ramming forward, forcing his length inside her. Due to the wetness, he managed to slide in quite far, but soon her tightness had him stopping and panting. One of his hands gripped her under her thighs, the lower length of his tail manoeuvring to spread her leg out wider with her ankle hooked on it.
Their breath mingled, everything seeming to stop.
Orihime's lips were frozen mid-gasp, eyes wide. Nothing to quell the invasive, full sensation. Sweat broke out on her forehead, which he caught on his lips, kissing it away.
The oddly sweet gesture had her smiling weakly. "I thought..." she gently panted, bucking her hips experimentally, "that we were starting."
Ulquiorra snaps his hips forward again the second those words were out, managing to thrust deeper. He liked the sounds of her moans he decided, watching as her eyes flew wide, head tossing back. Her full breasts bounced, damp, auburn hair clinging to her skin.
His tongue brushed along her bottom lip as he thrust, before pressing his mouth hard against hers. She suckled his tongue, arms straining against the tight clasp of his tail wound around her wrists. She moved her hips with him.
"Harder," she pleaded against his mouth, a mindless order. If she weren't drugged on pleasure she'd be blushing like a maiden. Ulquiorra panted, her demand only serving to heighten his lust. Grabbing her hips, he angled them up, ramming his cock inside her so that the full length sheathed inside. Her subsequent loud cries only encouraged his ferocity.
His clawed toes dig harsh rivets into the wood of the floor as he nipped her lips, moaning. Rosy lips press against his again, and Ulquiorra realises that his right hand is still being held captive, had been all that time. Her fingers squeezed over his, watery eyes remaining locked with his.
The creature had to fight the urge to utterly and completely consume her.
His clawed hand cupped her breast, sharp nails digging in slightly to the soft mound as he squeezed, rubbing a thumb against her nipple and leaving red scratches on her flesh. He drank in her moaning and high, keening sounds, their kisses becoming sloppy as he thrust erratically, harsh slapping sounds filling the room. The black fur and feathers of his lower half had become soaked from their combined juices.
Her wanting tongue licked against his, a string of saliva connecting them. "Please, Ulquiorra, more," she whimpered, eyes hazy.
"Your greed will be your undoing, Woman." He let out a groan, eyes darkening. He suddenly grabbed her hair and tugged it back, slamming inside her quicker and quicker. Orihime screamed, feeling his length hit a sweet spot deep inside her.
He has no scruples about slamming harder into her, his hips hitting her own with the ferocity of his thrusts before gnashing his teeth together, making a low noise as he released, shuddering. Orihime soon followed, crying out and trembling against him, legs going slack around his waist.
"You...you came inside," she murmured dazedly.
"If you're r-referring to the orgasm and possible procreation, I think it's unlikely," he muttered, catching his breath, lips brushing her neck. "There is nothing else like me," he thought of Acidwire and those other creatures in the dunes. Maybe there were similar things, but whatever he was, Ulquiorra did not think he was meant to feel this way.
"...You're not alone though. I don't think there's anything else like m-me either. I don't know what I am."
Ulquiorra blinked and shifted back. It felt somewhat like torture to pull away from her, the loss of heat almost unbearable. He hated the sting, that he knew no cave would ever be a comfort from the rain again. His tail released her wrists, leaving purplish, tender rings."I suppose you're right," he said, back to his monotone voice. Black wings slid out from beneath her, folding behind him as the creature lifted her against him and crawled onto the bed, placing her on it. "Or perhaps you're exactly what I thought you were when I first saw you. My creator."
"But you're real."
"It doesn't change your part in my quality of existence," he said, making to go. The bed was her space.
Orihime grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him down, cradling him to her. "Don't leave," she mumbled tiredly, eyes already slipping shut. "Whatever we are, I know that you're the only thing left that makes sense to me."
Ulquiorra stiffened, head pillowed to her chest as he glanced up at her. "Never mind your species or powers, I don't understand you," he said slowly but settled against her, body sprawled against the soft curves and dips of the woman's body as she quietly giggled.
For once, Ulquiorra drifted into sleep first, lulled by her fingers stroking through feather-soft hair. Giving an extinguished sigh, the creature surrendered himself to her.
---
When the first rays of the morning sun crept through the bedroom blinds, a thin rectangle of light fell over Orihime's lids, urging them to crack open. Wincing, she raised her arm so that it blocked out the harsh blaze. Glancing down at the weight on her chest and stomach, her eyes briefly widened, before gentling.
Orihime hugged the man closer, smoothing her hand over the filled expanse of flesh where a hollow hole had once been.

Butterflies/Chapter 3
The colors of the cars blended together as they crossed the highway, the breeze nearly knocking her off her feet. This would be the hard part of getting to the public library. Though the library was a lot closer than the bookstore, the one downfall was that you had to cross highway 10 to get there. Highway 10 usually brought a lot of deaths and accidents in its wake. There was a medium, however, that one could cross to for safety. Celestia of course planned to do this with ease. She'd done it many times before. There was probably a safer way of doing this, but she couldn't think of one on the spot.
Celestia waited for her opening. It'd have to be a big one considering she had short legs and couldn't run very fast. Cars going around 70 miles per hour zipped with a swoosh past her small body. There. A large opening came to. Celestia took a deep breath and crossed. Not as dramatic as she thought it would be, though she kept an eye on her left, making sure nothing was coming. Nearly tripping on the sidewalk, she made it to the medium. She had run a lot faster than she originally thought at first, taking into deep breaths. She waited for her second chance. She didn't have to wait very long, crossing as soon as she could.
The library was a building of considerable height and width with glass windows from floor to ceiling and about three stories. This used to be her favorite spot after school, coming here to just relax and read for a bit. That was when she enjoyed reading a long time ago. She didn't anymore. It was just as simple as that though, no other reason. At least none that she could think of.
The moment she entered the building, cool air enveloped her. It wasn’t too hot out or anything, it just felt nicer inside. Fresher. She hadn’t been here in a long time. Celestia figured the first thing she should do would be to check the computers. There weren’t many people here today since it was Monday, so she wouldn’t have to worry about a wait. The computers for searching were across from the fiction section, a small seating area next to a window nestled near the bathrooms. She found a chair and set her bag down, pulling herself forward to start up the computer. It was already on with something in the search bar. “Devil In The White City” in tiny letters in the bar at the top of the screen. That had been another book on her list. That sounded interesting as well, but she deleted the text and typed in the book she wanted.
Endurance
Searching...
No results found.
Great. Celestia sighed, her hopes dying again. Then she had a thought. Maybe they did have it and just hadn’t put it in yet. She jumped up, almost forgetting her bag by the chair before scooping it up over her shoulders again. She tried not to look like she was in a hurry. There was no time for small talk or questions. The lady at the front desk was sat at her computer, reading. Her thick blonde hair yanked back into a short ponytail and her tan skin dull against the white of the walls.
“Uh, excuse me ma’am.” Celestia started. She could barely see over the desk because of her height. Her hands held onto the edge of the tall desk while she brought herself to her toes. An attempt to see over the marble. The woman glanced up from her book then drew her attention back down.
“Hm?” the woman hummed to her. So she was paying attention.
“I was wondering if you had a book here. Endurance by Shackleton. I searched on the pc but-“
“If you didn’t find it there then we don’t have it.” the lady cut Celestia off rudely. Celestia quickly hushed herself, willing her eyes not to water.
“O-oh… okay, excuse me for bothering you…” she heard her voice crack under the pressure of staying stable. The woman simply hummed again, not even looking at Celestia. Celestia took another breath, stepping out of the library and near the highway again. She felt tears welling up already. She would have to make the trip to the bookstore and be home before dark somehow. Celestia tried to think. She could wait until tomorrow to go and get it, that way she would definitely be home before dark came around. The sun looked like it was getting closer and closer to the horizon.
Then again, what if her parents stayed home tomorrow and they wouldn’t let her go at all? That possibility was more than likely to happen. Celestia leaned her head back, looking up at the orange tinting sky. She would have to do it today. She turned again, making way towards the other side of town.
Celestia wasn’t scared of walking alone. The town she lived in was actually relatively safe. At least, she felt safer outside than at home. People bustled around as they started to come out of work. Going to get groceries, moving into their homes for probably the rest of the day, fast food places being filled to the brim with people. Celestia always forgot just how packed her town was. Her short legs tried to move a little faster though, trying to save some daylight. Despite the safety of the small town, it was still dangerous to travel alone at night. Who knew what thugs were prowling around the streets when everything went dark?
The streets were slower as the cars passed. Celestia could actually see the passengers as they drove by. This of course made her feel better, as everything was a lot slower and more manageable. Now only down to about 30 miles an hour. She could still feel the breeze of the cars as they flew by. The bookstore was a bit of a ways down the road, but just having a relaxing walk couldn’t hurt, right? She hoped not.
After a little more time of walking, Celestia’s legs grew tired. She could now see the bookstore up ahead in the mall. She kept going, not wanting to falter and end up being out later than she had to be. The building was of course smaller than the public library. A giant sign across the top of the door that read “Book Warehouse” shined in the light. She smiled, her body perking up and the ache in her calves ceasing entirely. Celestia swiftly entered through the door, peeking around to see how many people were here. A lot more than she had expected. The store was a little cramped due not only to the amount of people inside but the amount of shelves packed together.p in the tiny space.
Celestia hurriedly moved towards the back of the store near the nonfiction section, avoiding anyone she could. She pleaded in her head that Endurance was here. She could have just asked and everything would have been quicker, though she wanted to avoid people if she could help it. Small talk was best avoided.
Once she got there, she immediately noticed it. The deep blue cover with the ship set a sail, broken and battered in the storm. Celestia smiled again, stretching her arm up for it. However, she couldn’t quite reach it. She cursed under her breath, trying again. Her fingers could barely touch the cover. If she just hopped up a little…
She tried to do just that, coming back down and, with a squeal, nearly falling backwards before strong arms caught her. Fear coursed through her and once he let her go she whipped around. She expected to see the long brown hair and cold brown eyes of her father, filled with rage at the fact that she hadn’t come home yet. However, it wasn’t him. Rather a handsome man stared back at her. Messy black hair slightly covering a wrapped bandage over his forehead. He was in a casual dress of jeans and black hoodie. He looked a lot older than Celestia, but around her age at the same time.
“S-s-sorry…” she stuttered, her hands clasping together in front of her and her eyes averting his grey gaze. The man chuckled.
“You’re alright, is this what you needed?” he asked. He stood directly in front of her, easily grabbing up Endurance and holding it out to her. She looked back up, nodding. Celestia gently took the book out of his hands.
“Thank you sir…” she spoke softly. He smiled.
“What’s it for?” he asked suddenly. Celestia knew she should be getting back by now, but something in her said she could stay and speak with him. Something pulled her into him. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it either….
“It’s for a class I’m in… AP Literature…” she explained her project. The presentation she was going to do and how she was going to do it. The man seemed genuinely interested in her explanation. Celestia took this as a positive, stranger danger going out of the window completely.
“Ah~ Endurance is a good choice. I assume you haven’t read it then, hmm?”
“No sir, but of course I plan to.”
Well of course she did.
He didn’t seem to notice this however, simply smiling again at her. He started conversation about Endurance, talking about how much he personally had enjoyed it and how he thought it would be an easy read, considering it actually wasn’t for AP Literature students, but AP Language students instead. Celestia listened to him, not even realizing just how quickly time had been passing by.
“Mind if I ask your name?” he stood over her, closer now. It wasn’t dominating however, not like her father. It felt different. Safe couldn’t have been the word, she’d only just met him. Yet she couldn’t help but feel a little lighter on her feet when he moved closer to her. His body heat felt comfortable even through the layers of her uniform.
“Celestia. Celestia Fae.” her last name might have been a bit much, but she held out her hand to shake his. He took it, his smile deepening.
“That’s a beautiful name you have there, Celestia. I’m Chrollo. Chrollo Lucilfer.” he shook her hand. A strong handshake, but it didn’t hurt. It wasn’t forceful. Something in this interaction made her heart swell. He was being so gentle with her. This made that feeling she continued having to strengthen again and her knees felt slightly weaker.
She let go of his hand, hoping she hadn’t lingered too long and made things awkward. Celestia could feel the pink in her cheeks brighten as she looked down at the book.
“Uh… sorry if I’m intruding but um,” she started, her body feeling hot, “do you uh… do you come here often?” she questioned. She knew this might have been a little more invasive than he may have liked, though if he thought such things, he didn’t show them. Instead he showed her yet another gentle smile.
“No, not anymore. I’ve been busy with some business stuff lately where I work. I just haven’t had the time.” he answered her. Celestia’s heart sank and she didn’t quite know why. It should have been what she expected. Typically when you meet strangers, you never see them again.
“What’s the matter?” he noticed, squatting down to her level to look her in the eye. Celestia’s cheeks flushed again and she backed away slightly. Not too far though, she didn’t want to come off scared. That would make her seem even more vulnerable than she probably already looked. She shook her head.
“Nothing… you just seemed interesting and with what you said, you being busy, I’ll probably never speak to you again… sorry if that’s weird…” she rubbed her arm a little in embarrassment. She shouldn’t have been acting like this. This was a complete stranger and she already had felt an attachment start to build. A soft chuckle interrupted her thoughts.
“I haven’t even left and you already miss me?” his smile wasn’t teasing or mocking. It was genuine. Her cheeks turned a darker shade and her hands began to shake again. She held them behind her back to hide them. Chrollo stood again, towering over her. He held out his hand.
“Can I see your phone?” it was a sudden request. Before Celestia could stop herself, she was already handing it to him. The charms in the little port at the top of the phone clunked together quietly. Chrollo opened her phone. She wasn’t allowed to have a passcode on it since her parents liked to check it often. Lately they hadn’t been doing those routinely checkups though. Chrollo typed something into the phone, handing it back to her.
‘Chrollo Lucilfer’ stared back at her, his phone number underneath. A text message made her phone vibrate roughly. At first, a chill ran down her spine. She had thought once again that it would be her father, requiring she come back this instant or he would raise hell. It wasn’t. It was Chrollo.
Just so you know you have the right number. ;)
“O-oh, you didn’t have to-“
“I insist, if you want to speak with me more, then I’d be happy to. You don’t have to of course. I won’t force you.” the words were kind when they came out of his mouth. Celestia’s lip quivered. Someone to talk to. She’d never had that before.
“Thank you, Chrollo…” she didn’t know why she was thanking him. Or more so, she knew but she knew that he didn’t know. Chrollo didn’t question it, again, just smiling.
Celestia finally took a glance outside, her blood turning cold. She looked at the clock on her phone.
9:59
She started to shake. She wanted to stop herself but she couldn’t.
“Celestia? Are you alright?” his voice sounded through her ears. The shaking didn’t entirely stop, though it slowed. She could manage to move her head enough to look at him. Everything felt like it stilled. Just like the movies and the books. Everything in her head went quiet for nearly a full second. She was okay. She opened her mouth.
“I should get home.” she squeaked the words out, sounding like a toy. Chrollo blinked at her.
“Okay. I’ll pay for this and I can take you home. It’s dangerous for you to walk yourself, agree?” he offered, his voice always so gentle and calm. Celestia nodded, simply following Chrollo to the front. He did in fact pay for Endurance, and then led her out of the building. His hand was near the small of her back, not exactly touching her rather than simply reminding her he was there. Chrollo led her to a white car in the parking lot near the back. For some reason, he didn’t feel the need to run. She didn’t even feel uneasy. She felt fine. Relaxed. Safe.
“Where is it I’m taking you.” he asked, his eyes gazing down at her. She looked up at him.
“Home- uh I mean…” she gave him the address.
“But, could you drop me off a few houses before? I don’t want my parents to know I let a stranger drive me…” she didn’t know if that was worse or walking home. Chrollo’s eyes narrowed a bit, but no malice surfaced in his expression.
“Alright.” he finally said. He opened the door for her. The seat was soft, made of expensive leather. She sunk a little in the seat, pulling her seatbelt over her tiny frame. Celestia let her bag lie on the floor while Chrollo entered the car. He started the engine, pulling out to start heading to her address. It was strange. He knew exactly where he was going. She didn’t say anything about it, afraid she’d end up coming to a false conclusion. Maybe he had just been around the area a lot. He probably lived here.
The lights passed by on the highway. The glare slightly hurt her sensitive eyes as she stared through the windshield. Neither of them spoke much during the car ride. Celestia would have started reading, however, it was dark and she couldn’t see.
“Would you like to read some? I apologize for not saying much. I am a little weary…” Chrollo explained. It was like he could read her mind.
“As long as it doesn’t distract you from driving…” she said. Chrollo leaned over and turned on the light so Celestia could see. She felt like she was in a spotlight. Everyone outside of the car could see her now and she felt shy. Not only that, but someone who knew her may notice her and say something to her parents. She tried not to let it bother her, opening her book to start.
She read the entire way home, glancing up every now and then to make sure they were still on the right track. She shouldn’t have gotten in the car at all with him, she realized. It was too late now. Though, he was still going the right way. He never made an awkward turn or turned off somewhere on the highway. Celestia noticed her neighborhood up ahead.
“Right there.” she stated. Celestia closed her book, slipping it into her bag and unbuckling while Chrollo turned on her street. She was grateful that he didn’t take her anywhere else. He stopped right at the end of the street.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to pull up to your house?” he questioned one more time. Celestia nodded.
“I’ll be okay, thank you for the ride.” she pulled her stuff up from the floor and got out of the car, waving. Chrollo shut the light off, staying in his spot, the engine quietly rumbling in contentment. Celestia hurriedly rushed to her house. Once she got there, she checked the door. It was unlocked. A shiver rolled up her spine. She walked in, but saw no one.
“Mommy? Daddy?” she called out. She regretted it right after. No one answered though. She shut the door, locking it behind her. She heard an engine outside. She scrambled up to her room, nearly throwing her things onto her bed. But when she chanced a look out of her window, she noticed Chrollo’s car driving away.
He had stayed to make sure she got inside, safely.

Jump Scare
Summary: Mingi does everything in his power to scare Yeosang. But what happens when Yeosang gets scared?

Seonghwa’s hopes that today was going to be a normal day were thrown out of the window when he walked into Mingi, sitting in the living room, surrounded by hay.
Hay was scattered everywhere, some have even been caught in Mingi’s messy morning hair. Mingi had a shirt and a pair of pants in front of him, along with paint, and what looked like a potato sack at his feet.
Seonghwa stared silently at Mingi before speaking up, “What are you doing?”
Mingi let out a startled gasp. “Goodness,” he said. “What are you doing up at 5 am?”
“That’s exactly what I was going to ask you,” Seonghwa said. “What’s with all of the…hay?”
“I’m making a scarecrow.”
“Why?”
“I need one.”
“Why do you need a scarecrow?”
Mingis face turned pink. “To scare Yeosang.”
“Why do you want to scare Yeosang?” Seonghwa asked.
Mingis cheeks grew into a darker shade of pink. “Today is October 1st,” he said, “I’m going to prove to everyone that I’m not a coward. And I’m going to do that by scaring everyone of you guys, starting with Yeosang.”
Seonghwa slowly backed away from the younger boy. “I think I’ll just go back to sleep, and this will all just be a strange dream,” he said before he left Mingi alone in the room.
It was no secret that Mingi was scared of almost everything. Personally, Mingi thinks that he’s just easily startled, but of course that never stopped the teasing. The constant jabs Mingi got at his cowardly nature was all in good fun. But with the Halloween season slowly coming up, Mingi has the amazing, or crazy, idea of scaring as many people as he can.
But this year, Mingi’s main target was Yeosang. Why Mingi chose Yeosang, no one really knew. Maybe it was because Yeosang always had the attitude that nothing really scared him.
And Mingi wanted to prove that wrong.
When Mingi had finally completed the scarecrow, he looked at it for a good five minutes. It looked like any other scarecrow, minus the fact that patched of hay were falling out, and for the clown face with fangs that Mingi had painted on. However, Mingi thought that it would be perfect to give Yeosang a good scare.
Mingi quietly crept to the door of Yeosang’s room. He leaned the homemade scarecrow on the wall, facing the door. If all went according to plan, then Yeosang should wake up, walk out, see the clown scarecrow, and hopefully scream.
Mingi had to hold back his giggles as he walked away.
Soon enough, everyone else began to wake up. Yeosang was not the first person to see the finished product. It was Hongjoong, who walked up in front of it to stare at like a kid at an aquarium. He was soon ushered away by Seonghwa, who seemed adamant on pretending that it didn’t exist.
After almost everybody except Yeosang came out, each reacting to Mingi’s creation with a combination of confusion and curiosity, finally, Yeosang’s bedroom door opened.
Mingi held in a breath as he saw Yeosang emerge. Yeosang groggily rubbed his eyes as he walked towards the dining room. He lowered his hands once he began to walk down the hall. Mingi sat at the end of the hallway, stunned silent.
Didn’t he see the scarecrow? Was he so tired that his brain didn’t register the clown scarecrow? There was no way that he could just walk past it, without any reaction.
Mingi sat at the table with disappointment. He was so sure that he’d be able to get him. As he and the other boys were eating, a shout came from the end of the hall.
“Woah! Look at this thing! It’s like someone had to create Pennywise on a budget!”
A few seconds later, Jongho rushes into the room with Mingis scarecrow in his arm. His hair told Mingi that he had just woken up, and his eyes were widened with surprise more than fear.
Glancing over at Yeosang, Mingi could see his eyes widened for a split second, before morphing back to normal.
“Weird,” he said. “I didn’t notice it. Was it in your room?”
“No,” Jongho said.
Mingi had to do everything he could to not scream in frustration right then and there. He didn’t notice? A clown scarecrow? Right in front of his door? What was this boy on?
“Can I keep this in my room?” Jongho asked eagerly. Judging by his reaction, Jongho wasn’t scared of the scarecrow at all. None of them were. Mingi suppressed the urge to groan. First plan, failed.
Mingi wasn’t about to give up so quickly. He still had an entire month to scare Yeosang good. He was just going to need a better plan.
A week later, the boys had finally begun decorating the house in orange and black streamers, and signs of ghosts that say “BOO!” To some Halloween enthusiasts, (a.k.a Wooyoung) it was way too late into the season. But nobody listened to him.
Covering the bushes in fake cobwebs, Mingi opened the pack of plastic spiders. He placed a couple of spiders on the cobwebs, and when no one was looking, he’d pocket a few for himself.
Hiding fake spiders to scare someone. Not the most original idea, but effective. And much more easier than making a clown scarecrow, which was now sitting in Jongho’s room, much to Seonghwa’s distain.
As Hongjoong and San we’re arguing where to put the fake skeleton, Mingi snuck back inside to Yeosang’s room.
He walked over to Yeosang’s bed, and he lifted up the covers. He sprinkled the fake spiders and spread the blanket back out over them. After a few moments of unnecessary patting down the covers, Mingi left the room, silently praying that his plan would work.
“Why are you hanging around Yeosang’s room?” Seonghwa asked Mingi that evening. Mingi had been walking up and down the hallway, failing to not look suspicious.
“Waiting,” Mingi answered.
“Waiting for what?”
“Yeosang.”
Seonghwa just sighed and walked away.
After what felt like ages, Yeosang finally was walking towards his room. Mingi ran to hide in his own room, almost like a giddy child.
Yeosang opened the door. He closed it as he entered. Then there was silence. And more silence. Which was followed by even more silence.
Okay, why wasn’t Mingi hearing anything? Yeosang must’ve not pulled back his blankets yet. He’s probably sitting at the end of his bed, unaware of what Mingi had left there.
Mingi left the bedroom door. He’d comeback when Yeosang got ready for bed. Then he’ll see the bugs and get startled at the least. Mingi was sure of it.
The sun was setting and Mingi has now unapologetically sat himself right outside of Yeosang’s room after he saw him enter. Mingi was hugging his knees to his chest, waiting to hear Yeosang’s scream.
Mingi felt somewhat guilty at himself for wanting to scare Yeosang so badly. But all of that went away as he heard someone moving around. Mingi held his breath. He’s going to find it. He’s going to find it and scream.
But no scream came. And before Mingi could wait any longer to see if Yeosang even noticed the spiders, Hongjoong told him to get ready for bed. So Mingi would have to wait until morning to see if Yeosang got scared.
Morning came, and once again, Mingi was hovering over Yeosang’s door. Seonghwa didn’t even pay attention to him as he walked by. If there was a way to disown your best friend, Seonghwa would probably do it to Mingi by now.
Yeosang left his room, ignoring Mingi as he walked by. Strange. When Yeosang left the hallway, Mingi went into Yeosang’s room. The first thing he sees, sitting on Yeosang’s nightstand, were the fake spiders.
Mingi collected his spiders, feeling like someone was dragging him into water. He didn’t even bother to try and get an answer about last night from Yeosang. He was pretty sure he just causally moved them because they were uncomfortable.
Time was running out. The 31st was now only two weeks away. Mingi didn’t want to try and scare Yeosang in November, he would feel bad. He had to scare Yeosang. By now, he would even be okay if he was startled.
October 30th. Tomorrow would be Halloween. Technically speaking, Mingi only had tonight and tomorrow to scare Yeosang.
As if Mother Nature herself wanted to prepare for Halloween, she sent a huge thunder storm over. Rain poured over the windows, and Mingi could see flashes of light in the clouds, followed by a boom that seemed to shake the whole house.
Naturally, Mingi was terrified. But tonight, he wouldn’t let it show. He crept into Yeosang’s room. He walked to the windows and drew the curtains close enough to paint the room in black, but also so that lightning could shine through.
Another round of lightning illuminated the room before disappearing with the bang of thunder. Mingi jumped at that, before deciding where to hide.
He wouldn’t fit under the bed. The closet was too full. It would seem that the best choice would be behind the bedroom door.
If there was one time Mingi wished he wasn’t so tall, it would be now. He was so sure that Yeosang would see him before he had a chance to scare him. And if Yeosang does see him coming, then tomorrow he would definitely be on his guard, knowing about Mingi’s plan.
It had to be tonight.
The longer Mingi waited, the more powerful the storm became. The rain pounded rather than poured, and lightning painted part of the room in stark white.
Mingi hoped that he wouldn’t make a sound, despite the storm wanting something different.
As if Yeosang heard Mingi’s prayer, he walked into the room. Mingi held his breath, ready to jump out, but he was too slow.
The second Yeosang opened the door he closed it and went for his bed. He didn’t even turn around. Mingi was just standing, mostly confused by Yeosang.
Then he noticed what Yeosang was doing. Yeosang went under the covers, wrapping himself with the blankets. He lied down in the fetal position, like he was a baby.
Lightning appeared and disappeared. Then a clap of thunder sounded throughout the room. Yeosang shivered.
Was he scared? Mingi never knew that Yeosang was scared of thunder storms. But by the way Yeosang hid himself under the blankets, it was obvious. He was scared.
Mingi wanted to comfort him, but he was also sure that if he went up to him and spoke, he would definitely scare him even more.
But then again, that’s why Mingi was here in the first place, so why didn’t he want to do it now?
As other bang of thunder sounded, Yeosang sniffled. Over the loud rain, Mingi could hear him sniffle even more. He was crying.
Mingi never knew how scared of storms Yeosang was. He had to do something. Mingi reached for the doorknob. As quietly as he could, he opened the door, and closed it. Now standing in front of the door, Mingi spoke.
“Yeosang?” he said.
Yeosang stayed quiet. More thunder rumbled through the room. Yeosang seemed to shrink into the covers.
Mingi took a step closer. “Are you okay?” he asked.
Yeosang didn’t say anything. He still faced the opposite direction of Mingi. Mingi had no idea how he was feeling, other than scared.
As more lightning flashed, Mingi slowly climbed onto the bed. Yeosang turned around, almost hesitantly. Mingi could see his tearful eyes even in the dark. Without saying anything, Mingi just lied down, and wrapped his arms around Yeosang.
Yeosang was frozen for a split second, but then he heard the booming thunder and wrapped his arms around Mingi, pressing himself into him.
They stayed like that in silence until Yeosang’s breathing calmed down. He wiped his wet eyes, before slinging his arm back around Mingi.
Neither of them said much after that. Mingi unconsciously petted his hair like he was a small puppy. After who knows how long, the storm began to calm down, and there was less thunder and lightning.
Yeosang looked up at Mingi in the dark. He wore a small smile on his face.
“Thanks, Mingi,” he said.
“Oh it’s nothing,” Mingi said. “I never knew you were scared of storms.”
Mingi could sense Yeosang blushing slightly. “Yeah,” he said. “I know.”
Mingi hugged Yeosang tighter. “Don’t worry. I’ll be here when there’s a storm.”
Yeosang giggled. “Won’t you also be scared?” he asked. “I know how you’ve been trying to scare me all month.”
Only the rain could be heard. Until Mingi spoke up after probably a year. Or, more accurately, 2 minutes.
“You knew?” he said. Yeosang nodded, even though it was dark.
“Seonghwa told me,” Yeosang said with a small smile.
Mingi didn’t say anything for the rest of the night. Instead, he had another victim he was planning to scare tomorrow.

There was a scent which haunted Rio’s dreams. Lingering, meandering, melancholy, listless. It was of irises and saltwater. She disliked it because she was sensitive to the stellar point of extrasensory.
“What did it feel like to be an agent of the Barian World?” Rio idly asked Aika, one splendour-soaked afternoon, dripping with sunshine streaked rain.
Snip. “I’m not sure. Like a dream, perhaps?” replied Aika, never once lifting her eyes from the arrangement in front of her.
The thought made Rio’s mind muse on the abyss; of snakes for hair and to be of lapis lazuli flecked eyes and yet more marine winds murmuring. Yes, she thought to herself in the frigid silence of the otherwise empty room, with its tatami mats and countless vases, it was like a dream.
“And when you hypnotise people, is that like a dream, as well?” Rio inquired.
“Of course not, Kamishiro,” Aika laughed, “that is like a nightmare. To be forced to relinquish control. Can you think of anything scarier?”
“I see.”
Nightmares. Not dreams. One does not drown in dreams. Suffocated and screaming. But they do in nightmares; in reality. Rio understood her feelings better now, even if her heart did beat, afraid, beneath her breast. She wronged her hands and she thanks Hanazoe for her company. She took her leave.
That night, Rio was not in the throes of that fragrance again. She did not smell her fears in the sea. Nor did she feel the ferocity of fire on her skin. She proceeded to have a calm, dreamless night and the same could nearly be said of the morning which followed.
It, too, was calm, tranquil, but her heart yearned for something she could not yet quell. It was not of the body. She didn’t want to eat and she didn’t. Her head was airy. She was dazed. Dazey. Daisy. But Rio didn’t mind. At least not until she caught scent of yet another fragrance which would bottle her feelings.
But this scent was not of the sea. Of water.
But rather, this scent was of the land. Of earth.
It was a beautiful fragrance and Rio knew she knew it from somewhere, somewhere before but not somewhere from before time. It drove her mad all day. It sparked life in her, once more, where nothing else had. She had been living this daytime like a dream. Vague and aloof without her usual vivacity beyond a creaky smile.
This fragrance was of fruit and of blossoms. Cherries. Cherries, it was definitely cherries and beauteous bark. It threaded through the air, through the school, and Rio felt as though she were the only one who could detect it. And yet she was not afraid that it might be of extra-terrestrial origin.
It was extravagant but not extra-terrestrial but perhaps a touch celestial. It was delicate. Like a lover. It caressed all of Rio’s senses and when the early evening came, with rose petal skies and orange blossom suns, she was still in the thick of this daytime daisy daze but she found it.
Once more: snip.
A cruel smile followed. The smile of a girl who knew that iridescent insect wings were the best ones to pluck to understand the plight of being easy to torture. The smile of a girl who enjoyed having power over others and over nature itself.
“Good evening, Kamishiro.” Aika murmured in the wake of a door slid too roughly to open. “I am pleased that you can visit me again today.”
Rio, like a good little girl, drew in closer. She knelt down on one of the mats provided by the flower arrangement club. She placed her hands on her lap. With a blink, the room became smaller or perhaps she had come nearer. To Aika.
Who never - rarely - acknowledged anyone’s presence but maybe Rio wasn’t anyone.
“I brewed something for you.” Aika said.
“Tea?” Rio guessed.
“No, not quite.” Aika said but she was amused by the sudden playfulness between them, so she encouraged it. “One more guess, please.”
“A panacea.” Rio tried again to guess.
Aika laughed into her sleeve. She adored that guess. “Well, I suppose if you drank it, it would cure all your ails. After all, you cannot be troubled if you are dead.”
“I give up then.” Rio said.
“Boo, your no fun.” Aika pouted. “But I brewed a perfume for you.”
Rio’s eyes sparkled. She held her breath.
“Here, hold out your wrist, my dear.” Aika instructed and Rio obeyed.
Aika’s hands were like spiders on her skin. Arachnids that never got the chance the explore Rio’s blued, dying skin when she had died that first time so long ago; never given proper, primrose funerary rites, no wonder she became a spectre of the sea and the stars. Though she was ice cold all the same.
Aika was gentle as she examined Rio’s veins and the various lines circling on her palms, holding her fingers and curious of how stainless Rio was. She was truly the most precious jewel that there ever could be.
Aika sought a bottle by her side. Rio hadn’t even noticed it earlier but she hadn’t been noticing much of anything today. It was a bluish purple and made of glass. It held a cork in its mouth as a gag and its liquid contents were not pungent when Aika ripped that cork free.
Aika then gathered her sleeve and let the fabric crumple in her hand. With her other hand, she poured her perfume forth and allowed it to soak. The dark pink turned maroon when the perfume made contact with it. She set down the bottle and Rio idly watched. Yet her heart grew excited, as though beating for the first time in hours, as Aika dabbed the fabric on Rio’s wrist.
“How do you like the smell?” Aika asked. “I don’t think I have much of a future in the chemistry of perfumes but it is a fun little hobby to complement my others.”
Aika gently let go of Rio’s hand and Rio missed the sensation of such eerie warmth in her fingertips. Cautiously, Rio brought her hand to her face; fingers curled in, Rio breathed in the fragrance that Aika had bestowed upon her.
“It is a blend of pure, melted snow, lilies, and cranberries, with complimentary base notes to accentuate such scents.” Aika said. “I do hope you find it pleasant; and agreeable with your body, perfume can be so fickle like that.”
Rio was lost in such the tender fragrance. “Thank you. I love it.” There was a vibrancy in her voice which had been absent the whole day.
“I am delighted to hear that.” Aika said and show bowed her head to Rio. “You were my inspiration for that particular scent.”
“Thank you, Aika.” Rio said once more.
And her hand reached out for Aika’s. She gently pulled it in and Aika came closer as well. Their lips connected and Rio came alive. She awoke and she lived in that moment, clearly. With all the clarity of the purest ice. Aika kisses back, eyes closed, and her eyelashes fluttered, moving like the stick legs of beetles, and she kissed back. Rio found it funny that a girl who could put whomever she wanted to sleep with that snip, snip, snip of her floral hypnosis could make Rio, anyone, feel so alive, so awake.
She relished it.

A reading of @ninja-kitty-more-like-no ‘s original short story, submitted to @normal-horoscopes and now read by me. original post here
transcription under the cut
Once upon a time, there was a city ruled by three sister princesses. They were much-loved in their kingdom- the eldest with eyes of brightest blue, the middle with lips of sweetest pink, and the youngest with hair of deepest red. They were incredibly close, acting as each other’s friends and confidantes. They were just, and kind, able to balance the people and keep the peace in their land.
For a time, all was well.
And then it wasn’t.
Mother?
Shh.
A neighboring kingdom, jealous of this city’s prosperity and peace, sought to disrupt it. They dragged to its gates hideous war machines, made of magic and steel and human skin. The king, a man of great magical learning and power, demanded the princesses surrender their city to him, and if they did not, he said, he would raze it to the ground.
Mother, I’ve never heard of this story.
Then listen when I tell it to you.
The youngest daughter, when she heard, did up her deep red hair, put on a delicate crown, and clothed herself in a beautiful dress. “I will offer him an alliance,” she told her sisters. “I will give him my hand in marriage for our kingdom’s safety.”
The other sisters wept, understanding the sacrifice that their youngest was making, and held her close until dawn. They saw her off at the castle gates, and watched until she disappeared into the still city.
When the youngest daughter reached the enemy’s camp, she stood tall, and did not show her fear. She spoke kindly to the weary soldiers, curtsied before the cruel sorcerer-king as custom demanded. She was brave, oh, my darling, she was so brave.
And the king spat at her fine words, and spoke the words that drew all the light from out of her, until she went mad with despair. As the sun set on the day, and on the youngest sister, who lay despondent in the middle of the camp, a soldier came upon her, and killed her in a fit of mercy.
But you said that she was brave.
Yes. She was.
When the other sisters heard, the middle sister donned silver armor, borrowed from the guards in the castle, and took up a crossbow. “I go to kill the king,” she said. “I go to avenge our youngest.”
And the eldest held her close, and wept, until she let her go and watched her disappear from sight into the streets.
When the middle sister arrived at the camp, she moved quietly, looking through the tents with eyes and a heart made cold with fury and grief. She reached the king’s tent- asleep, inside was the enemy, and she raised her crossbow to finish the job. And she would have, darling, she would have, had she not seen, hanging from the post of the kings fine bed, her sister’s delicate crown.
The king awoke when she sobbed at the sight of it, and spoke words that caused her to wither and decay where she stood, crumbling to rotted remains inside a suit of armor.
Mother, I don’t like this story.
You must hear it.
The eldest sister heard the news and she did not weep. She drew her courage about her, and set off into the forest to find her and her sister’s mother, who was a powerful witch.
Her mother answered the door and bade her come inside, offering her condolences about her sister’s fates. Once the door had closed, her mother hesitated, then spoke.
“I left you in that castle long ago, and I will give you your answers, and then I will give you your vengeance against the king.”
And so the daughter listened.
Mother, I don’t want to hear this.
Listen, daughter.
Long ago, there had been a queen with great magickal abilities, but she was never able to find a love, so she used those powers to create three daughters.
One, she formed from a bottle of light captured at the sun’s violent surrender to night. It woke last, a child with beautiful red hair, and so it was the youngest.
One, she shaped from a gentle pink anemone, the last in her castle’s courtyard to survive winter’s onslaught. It woke second, a child with curved pink lips, and so it was the middle.
One, she carved from a piece of sapphire the size of her fist, and as she did, she cut her finger with the blade, so it was made with blood, as well. It woke immediately, with bright blue eyes, so it was the eldest.
The sun took her first child home, she told the sapphire-girl. Her body turned to light, and then to nothing, what it always was. The body of her second daughter rotted in the encampment like a flower decayed beyond its lifespan. “All the king can do is turn you back to what you were before,” she told her daughter. “He will turn you back to stone if you are unprotected.”
She gave her daughter a vial full of black liquid. “This will turn your heart forever to sapphire. The king will be unable to change you- but you will never feel again. No blade shall pierce your skin, but no joy or grief will stir within you. You will never be warm, or cold. I offer you not immortality, but a half-life of invincibility.”
The daughter regarded the vial, and uncorked it. She brought it to her lips, but before she drank, she asked her mother, “Why did you leave us?”
And then she swallowed, so she would not care about the response, and she left her mother in her home before she found the answer.
But why did their mother leave them?
Because she knew, daughter, even then, that her eldest child was capable of committing this act, and she was afraid.
The eldest daughter marched to the encampment, and to the kings tent. She was attacked, but nothing drew blood, and so she went forward. The king, upon seeing her, spoke the words that would have crumbled her to so many sapphire shards, but nothing happened.
She pulled out the king’s heart through his armor, and she felt no relief at having killed him.
She felt nothing.
The end.
Mother?
Mother, that can’t be how the story ends.
Mother, that is not how the story ends.
Do you want another ending?
Yes.
Very well, then.
The people saw what their queen had done, and began to fear her. The queen, unable to feel love or even affection, went back to her mother to find a way to make a child that her people would adore, because, without emotion, she saw that that was what they needed.
The child was made of ice over a pond, and her hair was the orange-white color of the fish, still alive in the cold.
And the queen raised her daughter to love the kingdom, to rule well, and to one day overthrow her mother.
Is that better?
No, mother, it’s- it’s not.
I am sorry.
Why did you tell it to me?
Because you deserved to know, daughter.
You deserved to know what I did.
