I think this is the reason I can’t bring myself to absolutely love the new series the way I want, and particularly TLJ. The writing and acting clearly codes/plays the first order and Kylo as neo-nazis to the original trilogy’s Nazis, while the *ahem* direction wants you to view the baddies as a sympathetic, redeemable organization. That kind of conflict is just fundamentally incompatible with everything that the first order is tied to irl.

Kylo Ren really is a great example for how sci fi/fantasy writers should tailor their worlds to fit the times, so it could resonate with the actual audience reading them. There would be no point in making a Hitler villain anymore, because we’re not afraid of Hitler, we’re afraid of the 25-year-old malcontented white boy who fondles Hitler memorabilia while sulking in his room.

- V3 is the only Danganronpa where I like every character. Tsumugis a bit bland but that’s how she’s supposed to be, and she isn’t necessarily a horrible character and her free time are kinda cool. Yes, I also like Miu, Gonta, Korey, Angie, and Ouma. (the characters people are generally iffy on although I know a lot of people are also iffy on tsumugi, tenko, himiko, kaede / shuichi, maki, kaito,…. basically everyone)

- The one hundred thousand debates between Kokichi don’t bother me that much (Like the mistranslation and misdrawing of the fifth trial)

- Ok do not slap me before you read all of this but Gontouma is good;; when it’s platonic.

- I don’t actually like Saiouma or Oumami. Saiouma just feels wrong somehow, and Oumami feels like its incest bc of the brother relationship HC / thing people have adopted into canon. I don’t have anything against ppl who ship them though.

- This isn’t an opinion but for some reason SDR2 just kinda skipped my watch list. I got into DR by V3, and watched THH and V3, and I’ve began to watch a series for SDR2 but dropped it. Although I’ve spoiled all of them ahead of time and know their personalities so I still know what happens.

i absolutely despise when ppl paint katsuki as an abuser when horikoshi doesn't even say he's an abuser. Bullying and Abusing has some similar aspects but they are different at the end of it. Katsuki is. a. bully. Izuku recognizes that Katsuki is a jerk and what he did was wrong/bad (and he actually has stated that he hates katsuki, twice) but still sees his strong qualities that make him admire him

(This ask has been sitting in my drafts for the longest time and I thought with the upcoming episodes it was the perfect time to stop procrastinating and finally finish it. Sorry for the wait, nony! I mostly agree with you, but I want to further discuss some points so I hope you don’t mind I got a bit lenghty. You got me an excuse to ramble up some meta haha.)

A TL;DR beforehand: canon analysis supports that Katsuki should not be interpreted as an abuser, but an early bully at most. I also did a little analysis on the early middle school chapter and how it shows BNHA’s society/the peers Deku and Katsuki grew up around set up a bullying enticing enviroment, and how bad translations have us interpret their relationship as more aggravating than it really is - Deku NEVER said he hates Katsuki, for instance. Not once.

I agree that Katsuki is not to be interpreted as an abuser. He does not want to pursue Deku in order to hurt him; instead, he wants to push Deku away from himself. There’s a difference between “I want to possess you, to make you stay around me and hurt you emotionally and physically” - and “I don’t want anything to do with you, go away, don’t interact with me or else”. The first one is abuse. The second one is what Katsuki felt about Deku for most of his life (albeit very simplified). At the times when Katsuki did hurt him - threatening him in middle school, getting out of hand during the heroes vs villains team trial, punching him during the end of the term exam, etc - was because he felt threatened; so his response was to push him away with violence, with an attempt at “teaching” Deku to stay away from his lane.

This is not to defend Katsuki’s actions; this is only a reasoning, not an excuse. His violent behavior towards Deku is still inexcusable. I only want to make clear there’s a difference between “I want to go out of my way to hurt you” and “I will smack you if you push me”, even if his concept of being pushed is distorted to his own experience and it still does not make his violent actions okay. He fears and despises what Deku did at those times: talking to Katsuki as if Katsuki isn’t on the pedestal he grew up believing he was on. This is the core of Katsuki’s feelings. He does not want to abuse Deku. He wanted him to go away, and he WOULD physically/verbally assault him if that meant pushing Deku away from him. And the rest of his threats/aggressive banter is just really how he talks to everyone else.

Even in canon it’s explicitly stated Deku was the one who insisted on following him because of his admiration, and that was what Katsuki couldn’t stand; he wanted him to be away.

And that was way before. The game is changing, and the development of their relationship is one of the core points of the series. Katsuki recognized him as someone who is not allowed to lose, someone worthy of All Might’s trust, and just very slowly started talking to Deku like he does to everyone else.

I also believe that affirming Katsuki would be an abuser in a romantic relationship with Deku misses the point if the person is okay with it if it’s a friendship/platonic relationship, or if they ship Katsuki with other people. Someone who is abusive does not isolate their behavior to one single person, nor does abuse happen only in romantic relationships. Abusive friendships exist. If one thinks katsudeku is okay as long as it’s platonic, if they believe in their growth and healing enough to believe they can start and share a healthy friendship, then the same should be applied to a romantic relationship. Also if Katsuki were to be an abusive partner to Deku, he’d be the same to other partners. If he were to be emotionally manipulative, possessive, constantly putting him down and hurting him while also keeping him - he’d do it to any other partners. The thing is people who ship katsudeku usually don’t ship it hc'ing that Katsuki keeps his ill behavior towards Deku in the relationship - we cherish the character’s growth and development. The canon Katsuki, the Katsuki with the bad behavior in the older chapters, as stated above, didn’t even wish to keep Deku around as a peer, let alone to form some kind of deeper bond. The romantic katsudeku ship I personally want is the kind where Katsuki grows and changes (as it’s slowly happening in canon) enough past his insecurities towards Deku to be okay with approaching him like he does to other peers. No possessiveness, no emotional abuse, because I personally don’t see that coming from him.

Since we got to this point, something interesting and relevant that I don’t usually see being pointed out is that in the very beginning of the story, it wasn’t only Katsuki opposing to the idea Deku could enter UA while being quirkless. The entire class laughed at him, and the teacher didn’t bat an eye.

This is not to gloss over the fact Katsuki did show unexcusable behavior towards Deku, but I think the scene was set up that way to show it was not only Katsuki’s isolated behavior, but the system, BNHA’s society is shaped to mock and discourage individuals who believe they can become heroes or achieve certain things despite the conditions of their quirk(lesness). The way the society is shaped was Deku’s childhood bully. He was mocked by his peers as young as 4, while at the same time Katsuki was put in a pedestal because of his quirk - which led to his massive ego complex. We can’t analyse their personalities and relationship without taking in account the context they grew up in. Many people frame Katsuki as the single-handed culprit for Deku’s bullying background without taking this whole context into account, while also casting Deku the role of a submissive, persecuted victim when he deliberately chose to stick around Katsuki, and just generally shows to be a character with a lot more agency than that.

And what’s interesting in this scene is that Katsuki didn’t laugh along with everyone else when Deku says he wants to apply and he might have a chance. Because Katsuki takes that seriously. He takes that as a personal offence. The whole point of Katsuki’s ill feelings towards Deku were always that he

feels as Deku is mocking his efforts by believing that himself, a quirkless boy who didn’t do any kind of physical preparation for a heroics course - has chances of becoming a hero as much as Katsuki, who is a born genius AND presumably prepared himself to apply to UA, with training and studying, going as far as scolding his colleague for smoking because he wanted a clean student record.

he feels threatened by Deku because ever since they were kids, as much as Deku admired him, he also saw Katsuki as someone who was able to get hurt and could have a hand offered to like anyone else; Deku saw him as superior in terms of skill, but an equal as a human being, while all the other kids did not. And that made Katsuki not stand him. Because he’s scared of being anything less than the very best, he’s scared of being someone who can be offered help - in his eyes, someone who can be pitied and looked down onto.

And that’s why he reacts with hostility. He wants to intimidate Deku out of even trying to apply to UA. It’s even stated by Katsuki’s colleagues he got out of hand this time, implying it’s not normal behavior for Katsuki (and I’ve seen people saying it was confirmed by Horikoshi himself, though I don’t have sources so don’t quote me on that). Again, he will only seriously smack Deku down if he feels threatened. He does not go out of his way to put him down on a daily basis because he doesn’t want to interact with Deku to begin with.

Also, Deku actually never stated he hates Katsuki. Not once. What he actually says is closer to “he may be a jerk, but-”, which is how the official english translation translated it, as seen above (stole the picture from this post by @kiraelric because it’s where I found it faster :P). Here’s a post explaining it, and I quote @sugarmagic who gently broke down the first panel - which FA translated as “I hate his guts” - for me:

Basically the word 嫌う, the verb form is “to hate” but 嫌な奴 is “unlikable/disagreeable guy.” So what I’m pretty sure happened is that they didn’t realize な was modifying the word to be an adjective. It’s not describing Deku’s feelings, it’s describing Kacchan’s character. The reading of the kanji is written as “iyana yatsu,” versus “Kacchan ga kurai” which really would be “I hate Kacchan”. Then again, even if they read it that way, the furigana explicitly shows the reading, so I don’t even know what they were thinking.

 The translation group Fallen Angels takes way too much freedom and completely distorts some lines, and the dislike of Bakugou/his relationship with Deku in the western fandom was heavily influenced by interpreting it via FA’s aggravated translations. I had people who know japanese tell me how gratuitously innacurate the translations are - as an example, FA translates Deku thinking Katsuki is difficult to deal with as Deku thinking Katsuki causes him to be aware of his own flaws (source). The translations paint Bakugou’s character and his relationships, specially with Deku, unnecessarily harsher than they really are. In fact, something the localisation usually fails to translate is how Bakugou’s “die!” and similar threats are not be taken as seriously in japanese as one would in english - but rather pretty immature and petty (source).

Okay! So I saw tlj again! ⚠️ Spoiler Warning! while they’re are still are problems I have with the film, i genuinely enjoyed it more the second time.

For one, I found the scene transitions, and cinematography much more beautiful. The framing of the entire film was lovely. The manipulation of lighting and atmosphere and color was... The entire thing was just genuinely really beautiful.

I also enjoyed the music and fight choreography much more.

The two things I have the most problems with are the scenes between Rey and Kylo and the mischaracterization of Luke, Poe, and Finn.

Rey and Kylo clearly had a hateful and abusive and manipulative relationship. Both in Tfa and even in this movie. However, it felt like Johnson was trying to force this kind of ~chemistry~, which just felt wholly uncomfortable. Now, I could argue that it was supposed to feel uncomfortable, due to the manipulation of Snoke. However, I dont think that was Johnson’s intention. I think it’s more myself trying to see how to go forward.

Okay. Now for the Big Problems.

Luke would never even consider killing a student. This is the guy that saw good in Darth Fucking Vader. Luke would’ve talked to Ben about it before he ever considered killing him.

Poe wouldnt carelessly sacrifice ppl just to take out a big ship. He also wouldn’t disobey a direct order from Leia. He respects and loves her immensely.

Also! Holdo also couldve been much more interesting. However, because the plot dictated she needed to fuel an unnecessary conflict, she decided to keep her plan secret :^) why? she should’ve told everyone her plan? make ppl believe in her? like for real there was no reason for it to be kept secret?

Finn. Finn didnt get nearly enough screen time. He shouldve been seen as a Hero (im looking at you Holdo and your “a stormtrooper” line). Finn also would probably understand what was disgusting about the gross consumerism of Canto Bight. I just. He should have been given more. Much More.

So. I still have problems with the film. However, I feel much better seeing it a second time. Again the scenes i found most uncomfortable were the ones where Kylo and Rey interacted. But I did like it! Especially the cinematography. The framing of the film was beautiful. So yeah! I dont hate it! Which is nice. It hurt before, feeling disappointed in something I wanted to love.

But now I feel like I’m ready and excited to see how we move forward.

So far you have 4 butch villains out of the entire show, and you can't use the 'Lapis and Peridot don't count because they've changed' excuse because then anyone can point out that two of your four villains are gone now so they shouldn't count either. like. they dont get a chance to get development to become more than just big butch villain before theyre poofed away, or whatever fucking else happens. 

fun fact as well; when introduced and at the peak of her villainy, y’all notice that peridot had a lot of angles that made her boxier?? sharper?? peridot when she was first introduced was As Overtly Butch as jasper was but as a lesbian i still got those major butch pings, and i reckon the same can be said for a lot of other ppl. 

also; lapis has never been coded as an out and out villain. shes always ALWAYS been framed as a victim. anti-hero before she got shipped to the barn and just became a big ol depression/ptsd running joke. 

why the fuck do you all care about this so much anyway i dont even care about su im just making an observation and yet you all think im taking torches and pitchforks to the show. good fucking god. get a grip.

Its like one of those ships where its fine and sometimes even enjoyable in theory! If i werent terminally online id probably like. Genuinely ship it as a timeskip friends to lovers slowburn thing. Like one of the things i just accept as part of my future hcs of the cast post canon. Eda and raine have a wedding officiated by lilith. Darius and raine have catty (ha) custody battles over hunter. Lumity and huntlow go on double dates and have a rom com double wedding in their thirties. Im fine with this.

But actually spending time in the fandom? The hunter and willow tags are saturated with the ship to the point that you cant even filter it out because some shippers assume that hunter and willow being in love is a given in the show! (It isn't, by the way. Hunter canonically has a crush on willow bc hes been shown with the visual shorthands to indicate a crush when there arent enough episodes left to explore it. Willow has never been shown to have romantic interest in hunter) and since its a given they dont have to tag stuff with huntlow in the background. Either that or they tag everything that mentions these two in the same paragraph or shows them in the same frame as huntlow bc anything theyre doing outside of being a couple is still huntlow bc there still in love while doing this other thing!

And dont get me started on the "winter" tag which is just gets ship content buried under ppl using this very common word in posts about other stuff. Or push a random ship onto ppl who have no idea wtf toh is and just wanted pictures of snow or smth. So you either need to block all content about these two characters to avoid the ship (which isnt an option for ppl who like hunter and willow and their friendship but dont like the ship) or just resign yourself to seeing every vaguely related tag saturated with a ship you dont like

And even if i do like the ship the way the two are represented in in fanworks, especially willow, puts a bad taste in my mouth. Willow and gus needed more focus episodes and the fandom had a preference for edgy (and white) characters like amity and hunter so willow doesnt get as much attention in the fandom. But when willow finally gets another focus episode any focus on the actual substance to her character (self esteem issues, impostor syndrome, effects of bullying) is overshadowed by ppl gushing about how she would make a good girlfriend for hunter

And it almost always is how SHE would be good for HUNTER. Hunter came out of ASIAS with new friends and an understanding that willow will accept him even if he fucks up bc she knows he will do the right thing. Thats really sweet, friendship or romance wise, and the entrails are a good support system for hunter while he recovers from his belos trauma. He has reason to crush on willow, even if i think the "fall in love with your rescuer" trope is iffy if not done right. Willow however doesnt get a reason to crush on hunter, and hasnt had a conversation with him onscreen since ASIAS. Almost every piece of serious huntlow fanwork is about willow helping hunter through some kind of issue. And on its own its sweet. I love me some hurt/comfort. but the saturation of works where willow is just there to be hunters therapist or a symbol to show hunter is getting better by virtue of having a girlfriend makes willow out to be hunters "reward" for helping his friends or worse, recovering from trauma.

Ppl say the obligatory "hunter doesnt underestimate willow so he can help her self esteem" (which isnt how self esteem works) because fans do want huntlow to be more balanced than in canon, so this is their proposed reason that willow would reciprocate hunters feelings. but almost every huntlow fanwork about that focuses on hunter worshipping the ground willow walks on and willow is in the background of content meant to explore HER issues, there to reward hunter for being a "good boyfriend" by being romantically attracted to him. I like a lot of ships where one member has more issues and needs more support than the other. But in those ships, if the other member has issues, thats more acknowledged and explored by the fanbase. Seeing huntlow fans acknowledge willows issues and only exploring on how HUNTER interacts with them feels more hollow to me than if they just characterized willow as a perfect emotional support girlfriend.

Fluff and comedic stuff about huntlow tend to characterize willow a lot more accurately to the show. Either that or they reduce willow to a stereotypical female love interest who swoons at everything hunter does. Hunter however kind of gets reduced to a poor little meow meow willow needs to protect which. He is kind of dumb and pathetic in a funny way in canon but i feel like some works woobiefy him a little too much to the point where it gets uncomfortably ooc. That being said characters get exaggerated all the time for comedy so i dont have a problem with it. Unless the creator uses a REALLY outdated trope to make the joke land. Like willow, whos never been shown to be possessive, being jealous of other girls paying attention to hunter, who no one in canon has found attractive so far. (Just bc yall like the edgy boi look doesnt mean every teen in toh who comments on his looks didnt roast him for looking scraggly as hell)

The way hunter is often portrayed as willows loyal subordinate also makes me uncomfortable. In canon he has an unhealthy attachment to authority figures, putting himself in danger to blindly follow belos's orders. Willow whos technically hunters superior in flyer derby treats him well, but that doesnt make hunters subsequent attachment to her healthy. What makes hunters dynamic with belos bad isnt just that belos abuses him. Its also how hunter sees himself as worthless without something to serve. Hunter calling willow "captain" instead of her name, to me, shows he still sees her as more of an authority figure than his friend. His lack of one on one interactions with willow outside of helping each other in battle, contrasted with how he acts around gus, who he does consider a friend, compounds this. If hunter is to date willow, they have to see each other as equals for it to be healthy. And right now, hunter sees himself as being subservient to her. Hunter respecting and supporting willow isnt the problem. The problem is he seems to think thats his duty as her subordinate.

All of that would be fine if huntlow fanworks portray this dynamic as unhealthy. But instead this is romanticised in almost every fanwork. Its concerning that ppl see a ship where one member is portrayed as blindly devoted to the other because they have a history of idolizing those in authority they think can hurt them, and say its fluffy and romantic. Because the subservient one is the boy its subversive and therefore progressive and therefore good, i guess.

I dont ascribe to the "hunters too mentally ill to have a girlfriend" train of thought bc mentally ill ppl date all the time. Its a case by case basis. But in hunters case, his relationship with willow, romantic or platonic, will reinforce his habit of worshipping authority figures until someone calls him out on it. And if willow knew about hunters admiration for her as a leader, it would stress her out because she feels both responsible for taking care of her friends and inadequate to do so. If they remained just friends, there would be more leeway to not get into that in the show, even if it would be interesting. But if hunter and willow were to get together in canon, it would feel incomplete to just gloss over that. So when huntlow fanworks do gloss over or romanticize this dynamic, i feel like a lot of nuance is lost.

Anyway all of this is to say the way fans portray this ship squicks me out sometimes. Individual huntlow fans arent a problem (unless you go on posts that dont blindly praise the ship and yell at the op in the replies. You know who you are), nor are individual fanworks. I think its more the general fandom culture and the implicit biases apparent in the tropes everyone uses that i dont like. Not all huntlow fanworks rub me the wrong way and some are genuinely amazing. Its just that as someone who relates a lot to willow, its disheartening to see ppl only pay attention to willow when shes attached to an edgy white boy. And as a fan of hunter its disappointing that instead of talking about his fascinating dynamic with wilow, ppl are mostly hyperfocusing on a few blushes.

My problems with the fan portrayal of the ships is just what i dislike about shipping culture and fandom tropes in general. Again, individual fans are just having fun and theres nothing wrong with that. Its just not for me. The ship saturates basically every mildly relevant tag and since im not a hardcore shipper, it becomes annoying even if i like some huntlow stuff. I have a similar problem with lumity, though less so bc i like lumity a lot more and it has a lot more canonical basis.

If i was more active online during my other hyperfixations id probably say something similar about komahina or dirkjake or dipifica. But ive been having owl house brainrot since march. And if huntlow stans can write 800 thinkpieces on why hunter, a survivor of domestic abuse, thinking willow can and will beat him up in fanon and liking it, is a healthy dynamic that proves the ship will be canon, and is also progressive bc this time the one who might get beat up is a boy, i can scream like a deranged chimpanzee about how i find the huntlow fandom annoying sometimes.

Its like. Hunters crush on willow is adorable and i like the parallels they have with lumity as well as hunters parallels with caleb wittebane. And willow has absolutely no reason to return hunters crush rn but she obviously cares about him as a friend. And if they bond more in season 3 i can see her deciding hes cute in a skrunkly kind of way.

And yeah if they want these two to be in an actual healthy relationship in the show they have to address hunters unhealthy attachment to authority figures since he obviously sees willow as one. (The "captain" thing is not cute i will fight ppl on this) they should also address willows inferiority complex and impostor syndrome since landing a boyfriend absolutely will not fix this.

Or they can have them get together in the show before they address this and we get to see their relationship devolve into madness because hunter will be all "omg captain youre so cool ❤❤❤❤❤ ill do anything you want bc my entire self worth depends on the approval of someone ive decided is fundamentally better than me ❤❤❤❤❤ im gonna enable all your attempts to suppress your own emotions to help your friends bc thats how i think ppl who arent mentally ill act ❤❤❤❤❤" and willow will be all "wow hunter youre so supportive 😍😍😍😍😍 and you keep being my yes man and saying i can literally do no wrong 😍😍😍😍😍 so im gonna be your makeshift therapist and never talk about my feelings ever bc i dont want you to think less of me 😍😍😍😍😍" and we can either see them dramatically break up or address this and become closer as friends and love interests and either way itll be glorious

But then i see the way the owl house fandom portrays and talks about this ship and its like. Now I want them to never get together or address this ship in canon. Out of spite.
