#I don’t think Glenn owns the house tho

I’ve been thinking about Felix and Dimitri’s relationship a lot over the last few days (bc working on a silly little fic where it comes up in the background) and have come up with some Takes(TM) on Felix as a character in general, so I’m subjecting you all to them.

Now going super in-depth, saving Dimitri for last (brace yourself):

The Tragedy:

The Tragedy of Duscur destroyed his entire perception of goodness, imo. He was only 13 when it happened, but somehow he and Dimitri were the only ones to see it for what they believe it was, which was cruel and senseless slaughter regardless of any sense of duty or pride. Not only was he forced to confront the reality of the cost of chivalry, but all of his friends changed and his father betrayed his trust by prioritizing a glamorized view of Glenn’s memory for the sake of his own pride rather than allowing Felix to grieve the way he needed to. That attitude completely disgusted him, and he was somehow alone in that feeling. Again, this boy was only 13 years old.

Sylvain abandoned any sense of responsibility he may have still kept through Mikklan’s abuse and stopped taking anything seriously, but to an extreme. Ingrid threw herself entirely into trying to honor Glenn’s memory, not unlike Dimitri and Rodrigue. Though we don’t hear much detail about it, the way Felix was treated by everyone else also changed drastically and probably also didn’t allow him any time to grieve; he was thrust into the position of heir to his house, and House Fraldarius is arguably expected to be more committed to their chivalric duty (specifically their servitude to the king) than any other house. Because of the way everyone around him focused on this idealized version of Glenn and glorification of death, no one was willing to help him deal with it the way he needed to, so he just hid all his feelings for the next, like, 10 years.

Because he suppressed all that, the new people he meets at the monastery don’t really get the chance to understand him in a meaningful way, save Byleth and Seteth. He literally tells Flayn that he fears losing his sense of purpose, and her response is, “It’s not like you to be afraid of losing something,” which is completely untrue, as we’ll see from his relationship with Dimitri in the next section, and shows that she doesn’t actually understand.

It’s also worth noting that there are little things - very simple things - about him that his close friends don’t seem to know about. His supports with Annette and Dorothea show us that he loves music; he asks Annette to sing for him and gets excited at the prospect of going to see Dorothea’s opera (pretends not to tho, obviously. tsundere.). Bernadetta spends their entire A+ support trying to find things to make him smile because she wants to see him happy. Lysithea puts real, actual effort into finding a cake he’ll enjoy. These are tiny things, and none of them are about his pride or sense of chivalry; they’re about the fact that he’s a human with feelings who deserves to enjoy the little things, and these four are willing to give him that. There’s little indication that any of his other friends have bothered trying to find out.

Dimitri:

Speaking of Dimitri, after the Tragedy happened, he in particular was the biggest betrayal among the people Felix loved, imo. Because of his attitude towards it and his willingness to see the Tragedy for what it was, Dimitri seems to be the only person who acknowledges Glenn’s true personality before it all happened. The sense we get from everyone else is the glamorization of his chivalry, but Dimitri alone ever points out to Felix that he’s actually so similar to his brother - he says that while Felix is actively lashing out at him. I think Felix learned that attitude from his brother, not just his own grief. His desire to get stronger than Glenn had been isn’t just about his regret at not beating him - it’s about how he sees that Glenn was failed by everyone around him after his death when they refused to remember him for who he truly was. Dimitri understands that.

But ultimately, Dimitri turned away from his friends and himself by descending into the obsessive pursuit of revenge to assuage his own guilt for all those who died, and Felix was the only person to see and acknowledge this. I think that’s because they were each other’s closest friends but also because everyone else was blinded by their respective senses of duty.

Dimitri lost himself to grief while also being the only person who would have been willing to understand how Felix felt, but Felix still won’t give up on him, even if he says otherwise. He wants to get Dimitri back. He wants to have a friend who understands. The incident when they were 15 (only 15!!!!) was probably when he finally realized just how tall an order than was - the Dimitri he knew and needed was completely gone - but Felix still didn’t really abandon him. When Dimitri is falling apart at the seams during the last chapters of part 1, Felix is the one who notices first and Felix is the one who asks for Byleth’s help doing something about it. Felix spends the entire time skip searching for his friend, and his first dialogue with Byleth after it is asking them once more to help get his friend back from the brink.

But despite the way his trauma changed him, I don’t believe Dimitri truly abandoned Felix, either. I think the subtext of their supports is that he wants Felix to understand him and accept him and forgive him.

But arguably, Felix doesn’t need to forgive Dimitri except for how he shut him out. He doesn’t blame Dimitri for his sorrow. Proof of that is that when Rodrigue died protecting Dimitri, just like Glenn, Felix never blamed Dimitri. In their A-support, he doesn’t say he wonders why Glenn died instead of Dimitri. He’s kept awake at night wondering why Glenn died instead of himself. I think he feels the same way about Rodrigue’s death, even though he doesn’t explicitly say it. When Dimitri dies in Verdant Wind or Silver Snow, he blames himself for failing to save him.

Like Felix says to Byleth, his bond with Dimitri was forged before they were born, because of family ties, but I don’t believe that bond ever broke. In their paired ending, they overcome the fraying rope, never leave the other behind, and when Dimitri dies, Felix grieves openly in the way he probably wanted to for Glenn and Rodrigue but wasn’t given the grace to do so. They just love each other so fucking much, and not necessarily romantically. (I 100% get why that ship is so popular, but I personally see their bond as brotherly, for exactly that reason.)

Who are you and what have you done with my little bastard lad:

The biggest part of all of this, the number one indicator of his growth and character arc, is what he says to Ashe during their B-support (for context, they’re talking about Ashe’s own regrets over the death of Lonato):

Ashe: You said it yourself. Be more moderate in your passions. To me, he always seemed like a knight out of a story. And I was so caught up in my ideals. I turned a blind eye to his sadness, his hatred...even when they were right in front of me. I guess I'm pretty far from real knighthood, huh?

Felix: Perhaps. Yet knowing someone well does not mean you know how they feel. Whether family or friend. To know someone's sorrow and turn blindly from it... That is the act of a fool. But pursuing your ideals is not foolish.

I think in this line, he’s referring to both Rodrigue and himself more than anyone else. He can see that Rodrigue (and all his friends!) were wrong to turn away from Dimitri’s and his own grief in favor of their ideals, but he also knows that he himself was wrong to turn at any point turn away from Dimitri’s grief and the grief of his friends (and also his own, tbh). He knows he was also wrong to blame his friends’ commitment to their own ideals for his pain (which he learns from Seteth in their B-support. Again, growth.). He knows he was wrong to refuse to see any element of choice in both his brother and father’s deaths - he may still disagree with their ideals, but he knows now that they weren’t wrong to do so, and his friends and father honoring Glenn’s memory by acknowledging that wasn’t them disregarding who Glenn truly was. Rather, they were honoring a different part of them than what Felix had known or understood.

It’s so important to acknowledge that this line shows he doesn’t just change his attitude. He accepts that he was wrong and selfish the entire time and that he was hurting people because of it.

At the end of the day, he never truly abandoned any of his friends or values, even as he pushed them all away and hurt them, and I think he understands that he doesn’t have an excuse for hurting them. A huge number of his max supports with people are him admitting how much he cares, and as he comes to terms with that, he realizes that he can also love the parts of them that he doesn’t understand. And honestly? He’s as clingy as ever.’

In conclusion:

TWD 11x20: What’s Been Lost - Analysis, Part 3

Yesterday, I wanted to repost the stuff that my fellow theorists had come up with that struck me as important for what’s going on now (the spinoff officially starting to film) but here is some more discussion about ep 20.

Here are the shots of Bob from Alone and Lance in this episode. 

And I know that we've had lots of shots from above of different people laid out. Daryl comes to mind from Always Accountable and I should have tied that one in also, but when I saw Lance, this shot of Bob immediately came to mind. Especially since I had thought about the remix of the scene between Daryl and Carol and Beth and Daryl from Alone. I don't know why Lance and Bob would be tied together. I just know this looks like a visual clue to me. My takeaway is that we're getting closer and closer to Beth.

All this is great. I am glad you reminded me of Carol’s “I won’t leave you,” comment, as I meant to include that in my section about her being a Beth proxy. I saw that too. I think so many of these scenes can be interpreted in a lot of ways, and like you said, @wday, they just all seem to point to 4b-5a and more specifically Beth.

When I saw Lance lying on the ground like that, and then they did a pan of the stars in the sky I thought it might be commentary on how he couldn’t change his stars. I didn’t know what that meant. I think there’s something to be said about who we were. Who we BECOME is important, but we can’t forget where we come from and who we used to be. Remembering our roots, even if it’s painful, makes us stronger once we see how far we’ve come.

I thought of a possible tie for the Bob and Lance overhead shot. In Alone the shot in early in the episode. Soon after Bob meets Daryl and Glenn on the road and goes back to a new community. In this episode Lance's shot is near the end of the episode. Daryl and Carol is headed to follow the train that will take them to new community. Daryl is the common denominator.

I thought more about what you said above about adding in Daryl from 6x06. I’m not sure they’re the same thing. They’re definitely related (cuz Beth and Daryl symbolism) but I think they’re conveying different things. The point of Bob and Lance, in my mind, is that they’re alone in the wide universe. Bob���s shot is in the episode called Alone, and as you say, it’s right before he finds his next family/community. 

Lance died alone because he was never loyal to anyone but himself and his own ambitions. Bob did not. While he was alone for a time, he died with friends and loved ones around him, who cared enough and felt his loss deeply enough to mourn him. And that makes all the difference.

In AA, the shot of Daryl lying beside the walker is, in my mind, more trying to convey his emptiness. His search for someone who isn’t by his side at present. The walker he lays by isn’t unlike what you’ve both said this season about the empty chairs: they represent Beth being there, present in his mind, but not there physically.

Just my interpretation, tho.

Also, I’ll admit I was watching on my phone and it was dark and I couldn’t SEE a lot of that scene w Lance, Daryl, and Carol in the end. Was that a house or a train in the distance? I think it’s possible they all end up in the same place. If the bus is calling back to season 4, then there’s a Terminus on the horizon—the place where all lines converge.

Oh, yes, the WHITE bus. In Self-Help Team D.C. left the white church in a white bus. When it later overturned, we saw a shot of Eugene with the license tag which was the same tag number as the black car, white cross license tag number. Also the same as the blue truck tag in the garage that Daryl and the Claimers stay at and the same tag on one of the police cars from Grady. I guess it would be too much to hope for that we will see the license tag on this white bus and it would be the same number. That doesn't mean that I won't be looking. ;D

Guys, did you notice that Eugene was in a blue, not orange, prison jumpsuit with a nod to s4e10 Inmates. Instead of an orange jumpsuit that usually says PRISONER, Eugene had a blue jumpsuit with INMATE.

Yeah, for sure. I totally hope we see the license plate. I hadn't thought of that. And your comment about who we become made me remember something I keep meaning to mention. We've heard a LOT of episode titles in these past episodes. What Comes After. Alone. Who Are You Now. There have been others. And really, those are show-wide themes, so they're working them into the dialogue of these final episodes. Just really interesting.

In terms of what Carol and Daryl saw, I'm pretty sure it was a train station. So, not unlike the platform they all stood on talking about Pamela's plan. Just a place the train would theoretically stop. But they didn't see the train itself. That's why they were surprised and remarked about the CW having an actual, working train. The station might have been built before the turn, but it's surprising they have a working one that might actually pass by periodically. So, the idea, as they said, is that they'll wait for the train to pass and either hop aboard or follow behind it.

And you're both hitting on the reasons I said before that the train is so important. I definitely agree that it's a replay of Terminus, but this is also the second time around. There's also the fact that in 5x09, part of the hallucination having to do with Beth was the camera moving along train tracks through the woods. Now, we're seeing that again. So, anything that involves a train or train tracks is, in my opinion, indicative of her, her arc, or something leading to it.

And that already makes sense based on what we've seen. I'm assuming Daryl and Carol will eventually end up at whatever place Zeke and co were taken. That's where the leaked footage of them escaping and Daryl carrying Judith will take place. If the CRM shows up there (and we can kind see a black vehicle behind Zeke, so I think they will) and Beth is with them, then these train tracks are leading to her arc and reveal.

Anyway, good stuff. I also keep meaning to say that I loved that Carol called Ezekiel "Zeke" when he disappeared. I'm not sure we've ever heard her do that before. If we have, I didn't catch it. I just always notice that most people call him by his full name, Ezekiel. I usually call him Zeke, but that's just me being lazy and not wanting to type out the entire thing, lol. So, when she called him Zeke, it made me illogically happy. ;D

IKR? @wdway observed that in the earlier scene on the platform, Carol and Daryl walked away from one another, and Daryl picked up the apple (often indicative of separation). It makes me thinks Carol and Daryl’s separation might play out here. But that also seems like it will happen too soon and too abruptly. So… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Remembering at Terminus, too, who are the two characters that are not there? Beth and Carol. Those are also the two characters who were removed from the main timeline/train tracks and abducted away to Grady. They are Daryl’s two women (sister/lover). I wouldn’t be surprised if a separation happened here.

But I also wouldn’t be surprised if a convergence happened first. It seems foreboding, like something dark is on the horizon. Lance is a snake. Did he lead them astray? Is there a dark force awaiting them in that train station? Is it a “portal” to the past or future, like Leah’s cabin?

Yeah, that’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that but given that he tried to kill time when they cut him loose, and that he kind of abandoned Carol in the dark tunnel place (I couldn’t tell exactly what that was supposed to be either) he really could have been planning to lead them into a trap.

I'm so looking forward to seeing Daryl court Beth. I think/hope that this will be TWD true romance novel of TWDU. Tptb has called the Rick/Michonne spin-off an epic love story and I'm sure it will be, but it will be a couple that was established before the separation. A renewing of their love story but not the beginning. Whereas what we have with Daryl and Beth will be hopefully a true romance an epic romance and that is what they have saved Daryl for this story. 

I remember Lynn Collins on TTD saying that the viewers didn't see Leah and Daryl kiss because of the covid virus restrictions, and the writer jumped in quickly to state that at no time was there ever a plan for a kiss between the two. She wanted to make it perfectly clear that it had nothing to do with the covid restrictions. So why would she be so adamant in letting the viewers know that? Because Daryl's first kiss on screen will be an epic moment in his story.

I’ve thought about whether he might see her through glass at first, like in a research facility, re: the Snow-White theme. The building would be burning or something and he’d have to get in. I’ve thought about her treating him before he wakes up, and then she leaves, not remembering him, and Daryl has visions of her like in the Little Mermaid lol. I wonder if Daryl will meet back up with Morgan, and he’ll be with Beth. Morgan never met her.

(So, he’d have no idea what was going on lol)

Yeah, I’m the same way. I always think about characters she might be with. Heath. Morgan’s group. Jadis. TWB characters. I have an illogical desire for Beth and Silas to be pals. And of course he and Daryl eventually will be too. I have one where she sees Judith. In this one, she doesn’t have memory loss. Of course Judith looks very different from when she was a baby, but maybe she still recognizes the eyes or something. Kind of a spidey sense. And then Judith even says her name, and Beth thinks, “huh, that’s a weird coincidence.” (Because she thinks Judith died as a baby at the prison.) Then she says something like, “as long as your last name isn’t Grimes.” And of course Judith says it is. Cue Beth to turn into a puddle on the floor.

Yeah, I have ones where she’s lost her memory, and ones where she hadn’t. I often think of her helping him from afar. Like things he needs showing up mysteriously. Or he’s about to die (cuz zombies) and some sniper on a ridge saves his life, and he has no idea who it is. And it’s always her helping him from afar. Of course, he’ll realize it’s her at SOME point, which is where it gets fun. I could go on and on. But, I won’t. ;D

I have an episode question. I didn't quite get why Carol and Lance went into what was basically the tombs; that cave-like sewer deal. Would you clear that up for me. Didn't get it other than some type of weird tie in to the subway in the first this season or the water, sewer system at AZ where Carl died.

To tell you the truth, my first thought was that they came out the same place they entered. Logically they must have gone through to another opening. From the previews I wonder if this is the same place we see some of the scenes of them in some kind of similar situation with other TF members.

I am not sure, but I do have it in my notes as an “infrastructure repair project” that the CW abandoned because of too many “cave-ins.” I kind of thought it was a tunnel? Like for a road or train tracks. I read it as a reference to the cave-in in season 9, which is a manifestation of one of Carol’s past sins. She has to kill a bunch of walkers in there in the pitch dark, and I believe Lance may have led her in there purposely to try and lose her, but I’m not sure.

It could also be a tunnel under a bridge. The word infrastructure makes me think it is a part of how the CW moves supplies.

I remember something interesting about it though. There was a large amount of “skin” stretched over a table or something? I think they comment on it but don’t linger too long.

One thing that’s going on this season is we’re seeing a really effed up version of the human condition. Those cannibalistic freaks in Connie and Virgil’s funhouse. The deformed men Maggie saw and their limbless, silent wives. The walkers with their vocal cords cut in the sewer. The way the Reapers hang their kills upside down. Now a bunch of skin in a tunnel somewhere? The world is getting more and more hellish, it seems. Like it’s getting further and further away from its humanity.

Honestly the last time we saw something like this was in 4b-5a with the Claimers and then the Termites. Those groups were truly terrifying and indications that sometimes, evil wins.

This then progressed to the Wolves who would dismember people and killed indiscriminately. There was also the evidence of a horrible, dark massacre at Pine Vista. It’s like what Lori says, which is that the only thing more terrifying than the dead is the living.

What you mentioned about all these horrible situations that have been brought to light especially this season reminded me of something Greg said about the Country Club in Still about it being the nine levels of hell like in Dante's tale.

“D’ya know what I reckon?” Wayne starts, pausing to light his cigarette. 

Daryl turns to face him, leaning on the wall behind him as he watches his friend’s concentrated expression. “McMurry needs to tone it down about twenty-five percent?” He suggests, bringing the bottle of Puppers to his lips and taking a swig.

“Something like that.” Wayne nods, pulling the cigarette away and blowing out a puff of smoke.

The pair look back to the dark horizon. They originally came outside to smoke and get a few minutes away from the ruckus of other drunk townspeople.

A comfortable silence falls over them. As much as Daryl likes spending time with Dan and Katy, there was something he liked more about being alone with Wayne. It was less pressure, especially for someone like Daryl who sometimes had trouble interacting with other people.

“Hey look!” Darry breaks the silence, looking up and pointing to the sky above them. “Shooting star! Make a wish.”

Darry looks back towards Wayne, who is already looking at him with his eyebrows raised. He pauses to wait for Wayne’s normal response of ‘wish you weren’t so fuckin’ awkward, bud’. Instead, there's a soft look on his face. He nods but doesn’t say anything before looking away.

That was the first night Daryl realised he was sweet on Wayne.

He managed to push those feelings down for the better part of a year. It’s not like Letterkenny would crucify him for it. After all, Roald is out and besides from a few ignorant comments he’s living in peace. Darry’s main concern was how Wayne would react.

Even though Wayne didn’t particularly care about people’s sexuality, he always clammed up when Glenn made comments about him or even if Dan came up with a hypothetical situation about being gay.

It wasn’t until a warm Spring day that things caught up with him. Daryl was sitting in front of the produce stand with the other three to his right in their own lawn-chairs. “Now... it’s impolite to kiss and tell,” Wayne starts, grabbing everyone’s attention. “But I don’t think I’ll be going on another date with Lisa again.” 

Darry sinks further down in his chair, turning back to the ground he was staring at earlier. He turns his head to spit on the grass beside him as Wayne begins to vaguely describe his latest date. Daryl tunes in and out of the conversation, trying to ignore the pang in his chest.

“What’s going on with you Darry?” Katy’s question snaps him out of his thoughts.

“What?”

She sighs and looks at Dan then back to Darry, “you’ve been out of it for a few weeks now. Sometimes I think you’re not even here.”

Darry looks to Dan who nods in agreement, then to Wayne who also seems somewhat interested. “Well, uhm… oh bother.” He sighs, looking down at the Puppers bottle clasped tightly in his hands.

“Well? Pitter patter!” Katy snaps, definitely not in the mood to wait all day for an answer.

Darry’s pale face is now covered in a light blush. Even though Katy would normally love to see him in such an uncomfortable situation, something tells her it’s not quite the time to hang shit on him. Feeling awfully like a child who has been caught in a lie, He takes a deep breath before answering. “I’ve been thinking and… there’s a chance that I might be gay.”

There’s a long pause before Katy speaks again, “well I’ll be damned!” She grins, easing the ball of doubt that had settled in his chest for the past year. A similar smile appears on Dan’s face and he leans over, patting Daryl on the shoulder.

“Well, I think this calls for some celebration shots!” Katy announces, standing up from her lounging position. “Dan? Wanna help me bring drinks out?” She looks back to Dan who nods.

“You always have the best ideas, Katy, and that’s what I appreciates about you.” Dan joins her as she starts walking towards the house.

“Take it easy over there, Squirrely Dan” Wayne calls after them.

Daryl stands up and moves closer to where Wayne is, pulling Dan’s seat closer so they can talk. “What?” He asks, noticing Wayne’s stare.

He glances around before leaning in and lowering his voice a tad, “well, you see… I was wonderin’ when you were gonna tell us.”

Darry’s eyes widen in shock, “you knew? How?” And here he thought he was doing a decent job hiding it.

“You’re fuckin’ awkward bud.” The two stare at each other for a moment before looking away. Dammit, he was right. “Also… I could be wrong here, but I think I might know something else too.” Wayne confesses, obviously trying to choose his words carefully.

Darryl’s stomach drops at the thought of Wayne knowing he’s sweet on him. He so desperately wants to interrupt him and let him keep going at the same time.

“-Ah fuck it.” And just like that Wayne is pulling him closer by the sleeve of his coveralls and connecting their lips.

It wasn’t anything too much, just a peck but even that was enough to make his stomach flutter and his cheeks burn. Darry pulls back quickly, obviously flustered. “What was that for?”

Wayne was never one to show much emotion, except if there was a dog involved, but there was a clear pleased look on his face. “Well I mean, isn’t it always worth giving it the ol’ college try?”

OH HELL YEA CAST LIST TIME

let’s do some (inevitably wrong) first impressions, shall we?

(following is based on cast bios ONLY, haven’t watched any interviews

Steve: he’s either a derrick or a glenn and it’s a little hard to say which but im leaning towards glenn. that being said i agree with the whole “don’t have a strategy thing” because he’s right, this show can be too unpredictable. however, should have at least *some* outline about what he wants to do. wanna say he’s gonna make it at least to week 2

Sam: YOOOOOOOO WHY SHE GOT THE “I NEED TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER” HAIRCUT SHE’S ONLY 27 SHE’S TOO YOUNG FOR THAT. i get the distinct feeling mom won’t like her which means i almost certainly will. i like her strategy because. same. but also im intrigued that she called the show a social experiment cause like....it’s been so long since anyone’s really seen the show in that way. it’s kinda nice tbh. anyway imma keep an eye on her.

dream trip: OK PICTURE THIS - I take a long-ish car ride. not so long that i get sick but long enough that when we finally stop it’s like AAAAAAAAAAH SWEET FREEDOM. when i say “we” i mean @shoeeatingshark and my teacher aunt and my mom but only if she’s on like a high dosage of valium or something to mellow her out. at the very least we don’t tell her where we are going so she can’t micromanage the trip. we stay in a cabin at the top of a mountain. 

day one, we go hiking and it is pleasant and windy and we have salami and cheddar cheese sandwiches for lunch. we eat at a nice local restaraunt. 

day two we spend vegging around our cabin, grilling and watching movies and taking in the sights. 

day three we go to some local landmark that probably involves civil war era history and also going down into a cave. we hang out later in some open late water park.

day four we go to an amusement park that is conventionally located within half an hour of our cabin. the lines aren’t stressful bc my mom thinks ahead and gets me a wheelchair so we cut in line AND i’m not in pain. if anyone stares at the young adult in the wheelchair, then dani or my aunt says really loudly CAN I HELP YOU and they move on while i laugh at them.

day five we go the beach because somehow we are located near a beach AND a mountain. it is cloudy but still warm and the water is very nice and not gross like lake michigan so you don’t worry you’re gonna die of some disease if you accidentally swallow it. 

day six me and my mom and aunt stay home to do some more lazy shit, maybe go to a local restaraunt while dani gets dropped off at a mountain trail for the day and left alone to look at bugs and fish and whatever it is one does on a mountain. we all shower and then see a live show, doesn’t have to be broadway standards, local theater is just as cool.

day seven we all go home but of course there is lots of stopping on the way and we take pictures and shit.

dream job: 

I run a library. it is difficult but fulfilling. in my spare time i write a book that gets on the bestselling list for a few weeks. it doesn’t get mega popular but it gets a shitton of critical acclaim and i’ve got a good following if not a large one and i made enough money that i can afford to take a day off if my body hurts.

The Walking Dead 7x13 - Bury Me Here

Uh... Is that supposed to be a statement? "Here, a melon is what we have for you, Saviors: Key, bye". You know this is the episode when Ezekiel is going to realize that yes, he has to do something about them Saviours, or else, when it starts with him having only one melon to give as an offering.

Well, this can’t be good. I know it’s supposed to be sweet: Morgan training the little brother after mentoring the big brother. Very Mr. Miyagi. But this screams “DEAD” all over.

Well of course Carol has nightmares. How is everyone else not having them? That kid is going to die, isn't he? And it's going to be the little brother's villain story. You know this is going to be the episode when Carol breaks out of her retirement of being a badass, when she’s so far away from believing Daryl’s lies about the Saviours not killing anyone in Alexandria, when she’s even having nightmares about it.

Oooh who's spying on Carol. Is not going to end well for you mystery person. Is it the same spy we saw in Alexandria back then? But was that spy not from the crazy garbage people?

I get Morgan no telling Carol, because Daryl decided to lie for whatever reason and she decided to believe the obvious lie. Now go confront your people, girl. At leas Morgan’s character is consistent in his peaceful demeanor. Which sometimes get’s a little annoying for my taste. You’re a badass man, come on, you know, you have to know, deep down, there needs to be something done to stop the Saviours.

I wonder when are we going to get the whole backstory of this intense dude (oh, right. Richard). Who's Katy? Oh, oh what did you do, dude? I really hope the grave is not supposed to be for Carol. I thought Daryl made it clear to you dude.

Desperation is never good in these cases. This is going to be a disaster. I don’t get what’s the trap about, tho? Oh... Oh he hid the melon? Damn, that’s some elaborated plan to make a melon disappear. How committed.

See? This is why you don't negotiate with terrorists. The saviors are always going to end up turning on you. And that longhaired dude is so terribly annoying. He needs to go. Why would you insist on bringing him over? I wonder if it’s Negan’s call. Because the leader of the retrieving pack obviously is not here for this bullshit.

Well shit. I knew it. I knew the poor guy was dead.

It's a little (this is going to sound horrible) refreshing that it was a white man dying to push the others into action, though. You know is usually a woman (wife, daughter, sister, etc.) or a queer character, or a poc. But this was practically a kid, so I don't know if it counts. (It doesn’t).

I'm glad we didn't forget about Morgan's mental health. This was what I was missing from him. He was clearly unstable the last time Rick saw him. Back then when we were still at the prison. And the next time we see him his the zen master?

Morgan is such a badass now. I get the peaceful mentality, but it can’t be black and white. The world isn’t black and white. There are times when you just have to take action.

Uh oh, Morgan's on to you, my dude. He's going to destroy you. I mean, I guess he expected to be outed once he was dead? Because Richard didn’t try all that hard to be subtle. Well, obviously he wanted to be buried there with her daughter’s backpack and all.

But of course it backfired.

Listen, obviously I disagree with him on his desperate methods. But, the dude has a point. When good people do nothing, evil always win. 

The thing with the Saviours is that they are always going to do something like this. They take and take and they don't care about anyone else.

I’m not sure if Morgan is going to get behind Richard’s plans, though. He is furious about the kid dying. And honestly Richard is not that charismatic when he presents his intentions either.

Of course not everyone with the Saviours are bad people. I a bet most of them are decent people who got just trapped like the rest of them. Like the Hilltop and Alexandria and the Kingdom.

From the first time we see him this retrieving pack leader seemed so done with life. Like he’s doing a job he hates. He seems always so miserable. But he has to do the job to survive? It’s actually kind of sad.

I like that he send the long-haired jerk to walk back. He could have just kick his ass, though. I mean, he clearly doesn’t like him either.

And... Morgan went bananas! Wait, so they're ok with Morgan killing the Richard? Just like that. Mmm...

I... I have a little problem with that. Sure what he did was wrong and probably everyone would have want to punch him in the face. Maybe throw him out of the Kingdom? But here we have a dude they just adopted, killing one of Ezekiel’s trusted men. And they’re chill with that?

I kind of like that after all Morgan did follow the dude’s plan, though. I mean, sure, the going crazy and murdering him maybe was a bit of improv. But hey, he did have his own grave digged out, so maybe not so much? I mean, his original plan was for him to die and make his death the catalyst to push Ezekiel to join Rick. It’s just it was the kid’s death, actually. Anyway...

Oh, well. Ok, so Morgan flipped. I guess that’s good, right? That’s what I wanted. and he clearly is not unstable enough to go after the people we care about (like our group, you know?) But I wonder is he’s instability may be the cause of his or someone else’s, someone important, death? In the finale? There’s supposed to be a few important deaths then.

But listen, I think Daryl should have not lied to Carol to begin with. And maybe she should have not pretended she believed him. She was obviously finding out eventually. And they were her friends too. Her family. Particularly Glenn.

I guess she was just trying to hold back for as long as she could. Maybe trying to fool herself into believing everything was fine. That she could keep herself alienated from reality.

But I am pumped for her and Morgan joining the battle.

I kind of think that Ezekiel was already making up his mind into joining Rick against the Saviours at the very beginning of the episode. Maybe even before. When Daryl went all rebel teenager on him. But obviously the drastic events had him like:

Hmm... I have zero clue who’s lurking in the shadows. First Carol, now Morgan? I mean, I know the point of the closing scene was to feel the loss of Morgan zen master persona, when he’s obviously turning his stick into a spear.

But there’s a moment in which he seems a bit startled, like he heard something. Right? So is only natural to guess it was the same spy that was following Carol, as he is in Carol’s house. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But the important question here is: Are the Saviours/Negan, so adamant in establishing their dominance that they make a trip just to pick up 12 melons? I mean, people, we are in the apocalypse here. Gas is more valuable than ever. Do you really need to waste it for 12 melons? And the Kingdom needs a truck to deliver 12 melons?

I feel in last couple of season the show has lost a bit of a storytelling quality. It feels like they sacrificed a lot for Negan’s arc. Which, ok, he’s a phenomenal villain. But still.

At times it feels like they’re rushing things up and then really nothing actually happens. The build ups feel empty most of the time. Frustratingly so. I get that having that many characters and plot lines can get messy and hard to handle. But still.

There are characters that feel misused, underestimated. Like background. And yet is not like the sacrifices were to accomplish something meaningful. We really don’t know all that much about the Saviours, beyond the horribleness of them and their methods. And we know even less of the Kingdom and its people. 

But, hey, at least it looks like it’s finally moving somewhere.

7x16: Non-Sasha Details

Good morning, All! Today I’m going to talk about the non-Sasha related clues I saw in 7x16. (Disclaimer: there will still be some Sasha stuff, but it just won’t focus on the segments I talked about on Tuesday. ;D)

Dwight/Daryl/Tara:

Tara gets in Dwight’s face about Denise saying, “She had a name.” Can’t help but think how much they’re emphasizing that, and of course no one has mentioned Beth’s name since 5x09. Felt kinda on the nose. Like a reminder to us of who isn’t being mentioned. And of course Denise was a major proxy for Beth. And of course Denise, like so many others, is being mentioned in the seasons after her death. Beth, not so much. Very suspicious.

Dwight reiterates that he wasn’t aiming for Tara, which nearly gets him killed. But this is the second or third time they’ve said that in all. They’re really emphasizing it. Dwight using it as excuse makes him sound like a defensive, whiny baby. So I think it’s being emphasized for different reasons. And who else do we think was accidentally shot? Yeah, Grady. The “I wasn’t aiming for her” could apply to Beth as well.

Dwight then says to Daryl, “What I was doing, I was doing for someone else. She just got away, so now I’m here. So are you, because of her.” So just wanted to point out the callback to The Cell. Dwight said this bc Daryl said it to him at the Sanctuary, and Dwight knows Daryl will understand this. And while Dwight’s speech is obviously about Sherry, we know for Daryl it’s about Beth.

When Rosita reveals that Negan has Sasha, Jesus says, “Why didn’t you say anything? He could be our only chance to get her back.” That parallels what Daryl said about Beth in Consumed:

I only point it out because it’s the EXACT same wording. Not, “go get her,” “rescue her” or any other variation. Exact same verbiage.

At Hilltop:

I wanted to point this out, only because I missed it the first time through. It’s not TD, tho. Maggie says to Jesus, “How am I supposed to make this decision?” and she’s holding Glenn’s watch. So then that leads to her speech at the ends when Rick says she made the right one, and she gives that awesome voice over about how the decision was made a long time ago by Glenn. Just some great symmetry there. Not TD, but definitely heart-melting status. ;D

Also, just want to point out that I think Enid just became Judith’s caretaker. Not gonna theorize. Just wanted to point it out. Don’t know if it will be long term, of course, as this was finale.

Carzekiel:

A couple of things I picked up in the scene that was the sneak peek for this episode. Carol said, “Guns up,” which is exactly what Richard said in 7x13. I don’t know if that is to parallel something or just emphasize that the Kingdom is ready to fight. Just pointing it out.

What was really interesting is what one of the Kingdome-ers says when they saw the shopping carts:

“What the hell? He’s dead.”

Obviously he’s talking about Richard. They knew he’d arranged the shopping carts that way last time, which lead to Benjamin’s death. Of course this time it was Morgan, using Richard’s tactics to try and ambush the Saviors.

So a couple of things:

1. Morgan is in a similar self-destructive mode to Richard’s at this point. Unless something changes soon, this does not bode well for him. Of course the fact that he went with Carol and Ezekiel to fight may already be a step in the right direction. Rather than go back to his destructive, hermit ways, he fought with the group and is back in Alexandria now. Here’s hoping he progresses in S8, rather than continuing to retrogress.

2. The wording here is super suspicious to me. I know in the plot they mean Richard, but it still implies that someone they thought dead might not be. Coupled with all the other parallels and details in this episode…yeah, I’m seriously side-eyeing.

Sasha Stuff:

The pancake scene. First, it’s weird that a mainstream outlet thought it was a deleted scene. Obviously it wasn’t. No idea what’s up with that. I did have someone tell me they thought it was more like a second sneak peek. If that’s the case, then it wasn’t really “leaked” which means the site just messed up. Weird.

I said when discussing it before that there were blueberries, strawberries, and green melons on the plate. On second look, I don’t think they’re green melons. I think it’s a green apple. So more Apple Theory. And both the strawberries and green apples point to Sasha being a Beth proxy.

Alexandria:

The scavengers arrived on bicycles. 

I know everyone is having all kinds of fun with this at the Scavengers’ expense, but this is a very important symbol. (X, X, X,). Remember that it most often represents something to do with kidnapping, imprisonment, being taken from TF, etc. No idea what that means for the future but 1) a great indication that these people will be enemies to TF and 2) they were trying to barter for people, which means if Shiva hadn’t shown up they might have taken some of TF hostage. There’s a good chance that someone will end up a hostage to them at some point. Just saying.

Small detail: Jadis covets Alexandria. And no wonder, given the literal junk heap she lives in. But the way she looked around at the houses, telling Rick she was impressed with what he was fighting for gave me the creeps. This is not good at all.

They used red and green explosives. Once again, life and death hanging in the balance. In this case, specifically Eugene’s, though TF didn’t set them up for him. Of course they didn’t go off and no one actually died, but still.

Tamiel’s smokes a cigar. Not sure what that is about. Someone also asked me if we get a clearer shot of Tamiel’s boots here. 

I don’t know if you’d call this “clear.” It’s not a close up or anything. But you can see the lacey design on them from the post credits scene of 7x08. That should put to bed the doubt about it being Tamiel. I know there are still some theories out there that we actually saw two people in that scene. One who looked through binoculars, and a second who jumped to the ground. But Boots, at least, does appear to be Tamiel, as the spoilers said. Sorry if that’s bad news to anyone.

As they’re setting up, Rick says, “The wall’s gonna hold.” To which Rosita replies, “It’ll hold.” This is a callback to 6a. Rick said it to all the Alexandrians after Operation Lead the Walkers Away went awry because of the wolves. Back then, Rosita didn’t repeat it back to them, but she answered when he said Abraham and Sasha and Glenn would be back. “They will be back.” The thing I most want to point out about this is that it was said after Glenn was presumed dead and right before he was revealed to be alive. Just saying.

Can I rant for just a minute about Negan giving Rick a guilt trip? All villains like to twist things around and this bugged me. He told Rick he was a monster for trying to blow up Eugene, “one of his own.” No, Negan. No. Eugene made his choice, and everyone in TF would have been sad, but the second he switched sides, the decision was made. That doesn’t make Rick a monster. It does make you a manipulative douchebag, but we already knew that, didn’t we? Okay, rant over.

Also, Negan asked for the pool table. Asking for Daryl back was kind of a given. The pool table by itself is a callback to Still, where Daryl messed around with a pool table in the golf club, numerous pool tables since then (X) and of course most recently and relevant to the plot, Spencer. Spencer had all those anti-parallels to Beth’s death. Asking for Daryl and the pool table together? Yeah side-eyeing that. The only time we’ve ever seen Daryl + pool table was in Still. Just saying.

I wanted to kiss Carl here, btw. He was the first one to fire and that’s when I cheered.

It’s worth noting that Negan was truly angry about Sasha’s death. I said that before. Oh, and Walker Sasha ate Roy’s eye. No idea if that should parallel to something. Carl’s eye? Beth getting shot above the eye? Just thought I’d point it out.

There was a bit of a parallel between Rick and Michonne’s situations here. Though the results were different, both were on a high platform with a female Scavenger who attacked them and tried to push them off. (Of course Rick fell and Michonne didn’t.) Both were hurt fairly seriously as well. I only point it out to show that tptb like to parallel the arcs of romantic couples.

Jadis wants people, as I said before. She asks for 12 but Negan only grants her 10. I’m wondering if there’s any correlation there with the 12 melons? Really this was a setup for next season, as we’re not clear what’s going on yet with this. Interesting tho. What does Jadis want prisoners for? It’s not like anyone taken from TF would have come willingly or just did what she wanted.

Lots of parallels between the beginning and ending of the season here. The obvious is the lineup. But there’s more detail than that. Negan specifically goes after Carl both times, and arms are mentioned. (In 7x01, he was going to take Carl’s arm; here he told Rick he would take both of his.) In both cases, Carl wore the sheriff’s hat and Negan knocked it off.

The differences show the growth. Before, Rick melted into a sniveling mess in face of Negan’s brutality. Here, he tells him to do whatever he’s gonna do, but it won’t change that Rick will kill him. And the more obvious difference that before, Negan killed two. Here, none. Sasha died but that was by her own hand. So TF has really won a victory against Negan here by not letting him kill them or manipulate them anymore. This is why the war will begin now. Negan no longer has the ability to control them.

Rick also says, “You’re all already dead” to Negan. He means that because sooner or later he’s going to kill them, they might as well already be dead. Badass line. Also a callback to episode 2x07, Pretty Much Dead Already. That’s the episode where Sophia, you know, the girl who’s been missing forever and Daryl looked for, suddenly showed up. Just saying.

Okay, at this point, when Shiva shows up and the fighting start again, my notes look like someone yelling in caps and with exclamation points:

The sad thing was that I didn’t take notes until the second time through. And yes, I was still that excited. ;D

Some details you might have missed during all the action:

1. “Phalanx Out!” Maggie says this. I noticed it because Richard said it when the Kingdom group stopped for the shopping carts. I looked it up then, but it didn’t jump out at me as anything big. It’s basically a battle formation with roots in ancient Greece. I have no idea what the significance is, other than a battle move, but they’ve used it twice in the past few episodes, so it must be significant. Plus, Richard and Maggie never knew each other and were from different communities. So plot wise, it’s unrealistic that they would use the same word to train their people. 

2. Broken Tail lights. In this scene, the camera focused for like 10 seconds on this car and all of the tail lights being broken out. I need to figure out this theme more definitely. Abraham was given a necklace by Rosita, made of a broken tail light. (Abraham = Beth proxy.) Also remember that before taking off to chase the Grady car in 5x02, Daryl broke out the tail lights of his car. So this is very much a symbol that has to do with Beth. And I’ve theorized about it before (X, X) but I’m not sure I’ve quite hit on exactly what it means.

3. The Scavengers climbed over the walls a LOT like the wolves did. I’m just gonna throw this out there. Look at these similarities. I have no idea if that was a purposeful parallel, or what it would mean if it is, but I noticed it.

4. The number 63 on a mailbox. This was very clearly focused on by the camera, but no one is entirely sure what it means. I looked into both episode 63 and comic book issue 63. Both are interesting, but one doesn’t win out over the other in my mind. This may not point to either. The CB issue is the one synonymous with 5x02/5x03. In the CB’s, it was Dale, rather than Bob, who was taken by the Hunters/Termites and his leg eaten. This issue is where they discover he is missing and think Gabriel might have had something to do with it. They then find out Gabriel’s secret about locking the church doors. I just think that’s interesting for several reasons. If this is what the 63 is pointing to, it takes us back to Terminus, which many of us think will come into play again. This is also an example of the lost shoe/foot theory (X) and then in the show, Bob was a major proxy for Beth.

Episode 63 was Remember, which was right when they first arrived in Alexandria. Honestly, this might be more what they’re going for with the number 63. Calling back to all the problems and divisions when they first arrived, vs now when they’re coming together to fight for their home. But I don’t know for sure. Any other ideas about what 63 might mean?

Oh and also, it’ s on a mailbox. Mailbox theory.

I also gotta talk about how much I was crushing on Michonne in this episode. (I tend to do that in MSFs and finales, when she manages to do some seriously badass stuff.) I totally didn’t realize the first time I watched the episode that she was talking while fighting Creepy Blond Scavanger, but she was. She said several versions of “Us! We’re the ones that live!”

It’s a cool callback to her and Rick’s convo in the prison cell. It’s awesome that she’s yelling that at Creepy Blond Scavanger, almost like a mantra. It’s even awesomer that after saying it, she finds the strength to throw Creepy Scavanger over the guard rail, thereby “saving herself.”

And remember that Us was the title of episode 4x15, which dealt with Daryl and the Claimers. And Daryl, um, “claimed” some strawberries. Just saying.

Okay, a few last things. Rick said to Michonne when he found her, “You’re alive,” which stuck out to me. Of course there was the 101 Days Without an Accident sign that most people noticed. (Go you!) Aaron gave Jerry an apple, which I missed. Dwight’s soldier is a callback to 6x08, which was rife with Beth images, dialogue, and parallels.

At first I couldn’t figure out what Daryl was looking at here:

Not sure what the significance of it is. Almost like the Scavengers left a calling card when they went over the wall. Still feels very reminiscent of the wolves.

Finally, Maggie’s voiceover is, of course, all kinds of awesome. Totally got teary-eyed about it, especially the second time through when I could focus on it more. MOST of the words in her speech–trapped, stuck, sacrifice, lots more–jumped out at me. Of course they apply to the entire story and all of TF, not just Beth, but I couldn’t help but see them through somewhat of a TD lens.

Whew! That was a lot. Any other details I missed?
