Hey weird question but what’s your recommend pen pressure for clip studio??? I had the program for a while and enjoying but I can’t seem to get the pressure to feel right
ouu this really will depend on you, some people require different amounts of tension / pressure in their pen grip to feel "right". It also depends on your tablet, some tablets come with a wider range of pressure output - right now the standard across the board seems to be 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity, but other models can come with less and that can limit your range in what's possible (I remember the days when 2048 levels was mind-blowing LMAO and now I'm learning that 8192 is the new norm ?? wild). That said, levels of pressure sensitivity are kind of like resolution differences in TV's - there comes a point where you can't even feasibly see the difference anymore so a higher number in pressure sensitivity isn't necessarily going to make any sort of significant difference for you.
Ultimately what I will suggest is to pick a pen pressure that lightens the burden on your wrist and tablet, you shouldn't have to be digging the pen hard into the surface of the tablet to get lines at their full size. If you find yourself doing that, you should try and lighten the curve of pressure sensitivity in your settings, your tablet surface and joints will thank you.
It should also be noted that you can change both global and brush-specific pen pressure settings. So while I have a general global pen pressure setting that applies to the entire program, some brushes I apply lower - or higher - minimum size values depending on the purpose of the brush. Lining pens for detailed work I'll typically have lower minimum values, whereas large painting brushes I'll keep at a static pressure size because they don't need to get too small for detail and are best expressed with sweeping motions that can be achieved with just a few levels of pressure. And some brushes I just have pressure sensitivity turned off entirely because they're meant to be the same uniform shape throughout!
You should also check your pen tablet's specific pen pressure settings as well. IDK what brand of tablet you're using but they usually require drivers to work and if you start those driver hubs you can find pressure sensitivity settings to apply not just to Clip Studio, but across all software.
I'll share with you my settings if you want to try them, but again, you'll have to adjust them to your needs as what I find comfortable isn't necessarily going to be comfortable for you.
Huion Tablet pen pressure settings:
(I have these set to a linear default, it just means that any customizing I do is exclusive to the program I work in, makes things less complicated for me)
Clip Studio Global pen pressure settings:
You can find this option under File > Pen Pressure Settings; it's where you can adjust the global pen pressure to apply to the entire program regardless of what brush you're using. What's nice about this is that you can actually draw while this is active and it will adjust your settings accordingly to match your technique!
Here's a lil' video demonstrating it:
And of course, just note that regardless of whether you're changing global settings or specific brushes - a higher curve means less pressure is required to achieve the targeted brush size, a lower curve means more pressure is required to achieve the targeted brush size. So if you have a brush set to a size of 15, a higher curve means you won't need as much pressure to get to that size, whereas a lower curve will require more (but that means you can achieve a wider range of smaller sizes leading up to size 15 with a lower curve). Where those curves fall on the graph determines that curve of pressure - if a high curve is immediate, then the range of pressure is very very low; if a curve starts off low but gradually builds up to and ends in a high curve, you'll have to travel that curve of pressure through your technique to achieve that highest point, meaning wider range of size expression, but not necessarily beneficial if you don't need that wide range and want to be able to get from small to big quickly and without much pressure needed.
Specific brush pen pressure settings:
So what's basically happening here is that some brushes have more unique pressure settings tailored to that specific brush (such as the DAUB Basiliscus brush which, iirc, came packaged with those pressure settings, meaning it has unique properties that don't specifically adhere to the global pressure settings I showed above); whereas other brushes have the pen pressure turned off entirely either to prevent it from having dynamic lines, OR to allow it to be manipulated through other pressure settings like tilt/thickness/opacity rather than size.
All of this is why my specific tablet driver has a default linear path for its pen pressure, so that I can alter the necessities of my brushes and software as needed. By default, I don't like having to put too much pressure on my pen to achieve the targeted size value, so my general settings curve in CSP looks like this:
Which means I can achieve that maximum value without too much pressure; if that upper curve was further away from the start point, I would need to apply more pressure to hit it.
Whereas if I need a specific brush to achieve a wide range of pressure expression through a slowly-building curve, then I'll edit those brushes settings to do so! (the DAUB Basiliscus brush seen above is, again, a good example of this, because its pressure curve is the complete OPPOSITE of my global pen pressure settings.)
And if anyone's still struggling to grasp the concept of the pen pressure graph, I think the best way I can compare it is to something like volume, or even video editing fade-outs or animation frame timing. It's all in the timing, if something gets bigger faster you don't get a chance to see what came between point zero and point 100. Here's a visualization with examples in terms of music that is fundamentally the same in how pen pressure operates:
I hope that all makes sense and helps! I probably went into way more detail than necessary but I figure if I'm answering the question anyways, may as well go into more detail for those who might also benefit from this! Especially when it involves graphs LMAO (I'm awful at math but graphs are my jam hahaha)

ZENO STARRYSHARKS BIG FAQ. YAY
this is gonna go over all the questions people ask me about my art, OCs, etc etc ^^ starting with -
ART QUESTIONS:
Q: WHAT DO YOU USE TO DRAW?
A: ibispaint x on shitty samsung. no stylus just my fingers. very occasionally (and not in several months now) i will use MS paint with a wacom tablet and pen!
Q: WHAT BRUSHES DO YOU USE?
A: main lineart pens are love pen and dip pen (hard) on a 60-80% opacity. when i do my pencil style i use hard mapping pen (bleed).
Q: HOW DO YOU DO THAT SCREENTONE THING?
A: this PNG.
you're gonna place the png over where you want to add a halftone, and then lasso that area. then, click "invert selection area", and erase over the halftone layer. it should only be left on the area you wanted it to be on. you can change the color with alpha lock.
Q: HOW DO YOU COLOR SO WELL?
A:
Q: HOW DO YOU DRAW DIFFERENT BODY TYPES?
A: it's kinda complicated because i myself believe that i have poor body diversity when it comes to my original characters, but i'll try to explain myself. by a general rule, contrast is most important. top-heavy, bottom-heavy, larger lower limbs, smaller lower limbs, etc etc etc it's all in the contrast baybe. let's use nova (a skinny character), pins (a top-heavy character), and novocaine (a fat character) as examples. please ask me directly if you want any advice on other body types.
firstly, nova. she is very thin with a more scrawny build rather than athletic. to draw her, there are three parts (excluding arms) -
head, body and legs.
these are parts that almost every character has and the most important thing about them is their size. different characters will have different sized heads and bodies and legs as we'll see later, based on age, body type, etc... nova is only a teen, so she'll have a big head with big eyes to up the childish moe-factor of her design! other than that, she's pretty proportionate by anime standards with a regular sized body and long legs.
however for a character like pins a lot changes. pins is extremely top heavy, and larger than nova. he has a muscular build that's heavily unrealistic - while there's probably someone out there with a similar build to nova absolutely nobody can achieve the elusive pins build. because his body is so exaggerated, it must be the forefront, and he has small legs and a small head to compensate.
because i have few muscles in my oc roster, i tend to exaggerate the buffest characters. i would give another example but his existence is spoilers for the project he belongs to. ;;
when it comes to fat characters, i have little to say for dudes because i don't draw them often (sorry fat guy enthusiasts 💔). but novocaine is an example of how i go about drawing fat girls. namely it all comes back to contrast - rather than drawing her ankles and lower arms larger, i draw them smaller to emphasise the size of her thighs, hips and upper arms as when it comes to irl fat people, those parts are usually larger. i also added more examples from my dangan art.
otherwise the proportions are similar to the skinny teen model, just with shorter legs.
more on body types here:
Q: WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
A: western cartoons, like invader zim and mlaatr. 2000s moe anime like lucky star. my mutuals <3. robert valley. jamie hewlett. alex ahad. splatoon. stuff i find on pinterest. and you guys who say that my art inspires you!
OC QUESTIONS
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR OC PROJECTS? WHAT ARE THEY ABOUT?
A: as follows:
MAIN THREE:
(AKA these are the ones i'm dead-set on making, and will probably actually become fully realised one day.)
ULTIMATE X-CALIBUR - sci-fi adventure comic about a girl called nova who travels across the galaxy with her friends to find the shards of a broken star called the ultimate x-calibur. like one piece but with cute kemonomimis in space.
REASSASSINATION - horror comedy comic about a dead girl who loses her memories after being resurrected by a manic scientist. she becomes his personal assassin in order to get shots of medicine that will bring back her memories, and has to deal with school life and a mysterious group of catholics coming to kill her on top of that. it's currently being written and will come out eventually.
STARSAINTS CARNIVAL - psychorror (kinda) fantasy RPG game about a group of children who are transported to an wonderland-esque paracosm where they have to make their own wishes come true before their 13th birthdays with the help of ghosts named starsaints, or risk having their heads chopped off. it's one of my largest-scale pet projects so will probably take a while to wrangle.
LESSER/EARLY DEV PROJECTS:
(AKA the ones that are either too early in development to confirm anything, or will probably not be fully realised any time soon, but it's still fun to rotate the characters around in my mind.)
MAGICAL GIRL WARD - another psychorror magical girl comic about a group of girls who who plan a group suicide online, but are turned into magical girls on accident and have to fight "viruses" to help other girls. very messy in terms of development right now and will take a while.
METALLIC MIRACLE - sci-fi about a child solider cyborg who is sent back to earth after being in a deep sleep for some 50 years after a war she was forced to fight in. i actually really wanna do this one.
SINSTRING MANOR - survival horror RPG game about a doll who finds out she's a doll attempts to escape her family home and gain autonomy with the help of a fly and a servant boy.
PLANET☆PIGTAIL - magical girl comic about girls who channel magic through their pigtails to defeat evil monsters while dealing with middle school problems.
+ a billion more that i can't even remember lololol
Q: CAN WE ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR OCS + STORIES?
A: PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLE
Q: CAN WE DRAW YOUR OCS?
A: PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLE
OTHER QUESTIONS
Q: WHEN ARE YOU GONNA BE OFF HIATUS?
A: when my exams are over i'll start posting personal finished illustrations again. so, like, mid-june!
Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DRAWING FOR?
A: i came out of the womb with an anime girl drawing in my hand

<< Chapter 3 || Series Masterlist || Chapter 5 >>
Elijah quickly walked into the conference room. "What do we have?" He asked as he looked over at the other officers in the room.
He had gotten a call moments ago that he was needed down at the station asap. Without hesitating, he was there at the station in record time. All he knew was the information coming in was about Damon Salvatore.
"We got word that Damon will be making a few calls today." One officer said, looking over at Elijah. "No doubt calling Rosa to confirm that she got the black card. "
"We've got a direct line to overhear the conversation, courtesy of Rebekah." Another officer added before handing Elijah a case file.
Elijah's eyes scanned the file. The only thing that was considered noteworthy was that Damon had already called Elena minutes before he arrived. Closing the file, he tossed it on the nearest desk.
"Alright, all ears in this room need to be open." He said as he addressed the room. "Whatever piece of information you think might be of use, write it down. If Damon is making this call to Rosa I want to know where she is in this city. If I catch anyone that so much as yawns during this call, you'll have me to deal with."
A throat cleared, getting Elijah's attention. "Sir, he just made the call."
"Bring it up." Elijah said with a nod.
The officer connected the call to the speakers in the room. The ringing played through the speakers, and it seemed as if everyone held their breath for a second. A moment later, the call connected. A distorted voice answered.
"Are you fucking nuts, Damon?" The distorted voice asked, earning a chuckle from Damon.
"I take it you've picked up the kitten." His voice clear over the line.
"Obviously. You know I don't mix business with personal affairs." The voice said, causing Elijah's eyebrow to rise. "This is definitely crossing my line of mixing the two."
"Take note of that." Elijah said as he snapped his fingers, wanting someone to take down that as a note. If Rosa didn't entangle herself in personal affairs, there might not be a hit after all. At least Elijah was hopeful about that thought. "Rosa isn't happy with who is on the hit list." he noted. "She might actually have a heart."
"Come on, Rosa." Damon said, not missing a beat. "You know this type of kitten a lot more than anyone else. You can train it in your favor until you get it to Elena."
"You're missing the point-"
"I get the point, Rosa. I get how attached you used to be. But things changed from the last time we were all in the sandbox and I need this done."
That was enough for everyone in the room to know Rosa had known her target intimately. This hit wasn't just some random person that Damon needed to be handled. It was someone who they both knew.
"Run a list of known associates to Damon." Elijah said, looking over at an officer. "Go far as back as you can. Including classmates. There's a connection in there somewhere."
"Don't expect me to do the works on this. I'm changing it to a drop and run."
The chuckle that came through the line from Damon was dark. "Just think of all the fun you'll have beforehand. You might hate dropping it off later but at least you'll enjoy it while you can. While dropping and running would be easier, you know you've been waiting a while for this."
"Fuck off, Damon."
"Has anyone ever found out what 'the works' meant?" Rebekah asked as she entered the room.
"Still working on that." Elijah mumbled as he listened to the next part of the call.
"It seems I've struck a nerve."
"No shit. I've got half a mind to back out of this and return it to sender."
"But no one does it as good as you do. Come on, Rosa. You promised if I called, you'd answer. Plus it'd be a shame if I had to have a talk with V about this."
"I dare you Salvatore. It'd be an eye for an eye and there's only one of them that's currently a sitting duck. While a personal visit would be fun, I have friends in low places that would be willing to help a girl out."
"There it is." Elijah said with a small smirk. "Our list can be narrowed by anyone with a name starting with a V or even their nickname. That's where our ticket to Rosa will be."
"As much as Rosa has been a pain in my side since taking this position, I do enjoy her threats against the Salvatores." Rebekah said with a smirk pulling at her lips. "We'll need a list of anyone who has access to both Salvatore brothers."
Damon sighed. "Look, I want this taken care of, and you're the best I've got. It's a bad one to you, and I get that. But name your price, and I'd gladly pay it if you don't walk away from it. We don't need anyone else being involved."
There was a brief pause in the conversation. It was as if Rosa was debating on whether or not she wanted to do this. Both Elijah and Rebekah held their breath. They hoped it would be easier for them all if Rosa just opted out.
"Triple the payment, upfront." The voice said a moment later. "And I'm cleared from your database."
"Done."
"That is one hell of a payout." Elijah noted as he looked towards his sister.
Rebekah nodded her head in agreement. "He's got enough to do just that."
"I'm serious, D. After this, I'm out. Our contract will be over and I expect you to find someone else."
"Deal. We won't discuss business at the dinner table anymore."
Without another word from Rosa, the line went dead.
A thought crossed Rebekah's mind as the call came to an end. "That payout is so she can completely disappear after she makes the hit."
"Looks like we'll just have to catch her before she does." Elijah said with a small smirk pulling at his lips.
_____
Adriana threw the phone across the room the moment she ended the call. She wanted nothing more than to strangle Damon for this black card. Damon knew all of her reasoning for why Adriana never wanted to mix business with personal dealings. And yet here she was.
After seeing Elijah's name at the bottom of the tablet's screen, Adriana couldn't get herself to go to dinner. She couldn't face the girls knowing that Elijah was her intended target. She couldn't sit there and pretend that everything would be okay. That she wasn't having an internal panic attack because she was supposed to kill the only positive best friend she had.
She hadn't even bothered to look at the complete file. The initial shock of it all forced her to shut down the tablet and put it away until now. She couldn't bring herself to look at any of the details just yet. Her heart wasn't ready for it.
It wasn't ready to find the traces of her past inside of it. Or learn the new things Elijah had gone through while she was gone. But this was a part of the job that she usually would breeze through. And with every passing second, it was a reminder that she was about to cross a line.
Part of her believed that she would already know a lot of the information contained in it. Even though it had been years since she last spent more than a few hours with Elijah, she still knew a lot of the details of their past. And that alone is what made her the right person for the job, just as Damon mentioned.
What she wasn't ready for at all were the plans Damon had forced on her. "The works" was a term that she and Damon used when Damon wanted Adriana to weasel her way into the target's life. Once she was in and they were least expecting, Adriana would make her kill.
But this was Elijah Mikaelson. The very guy that she had known for the majority of her life. He was the one that could easily tell when there was something wrong with her. And now, she was going to have to put on a brave face if she went through with this.
If
Now it was a matter if she could do it or not. She may have demanded triple the payment, but she didn't believe Damon would give it to her. But when Damon wanted something, he usually got it. What made it worse was Adriana never failed at her assignments. It's what made her the best on the market.
Elijah Mikaelson was going to either break her streak or make it so she could disappear from her life as Rosa. Adriana just didn't know which one she wanted to go with yet. She knew from the moment she left home that her life as Adriana Vega was a distant memory. Her life as Rosa was about to end if she completed this job. But it was the ghost of her past that was about to make or break everything.
_____
"What happened at Dinner last night?" Bonnie asked as she handed Adriana a cup of coffee.
Taking the cup, Adriana led her down the street. "I took a look at the travel arrangements after I left the bar last night."
"And?" Bonnie asked as she walked right beside her. She brought the cup up to her lips, taking a drink.
"I couldn't face the three of you after I found out who it was." She admitted. "This was never a life you were a part of-"
"That's bullshit." Bonnie said, cutting her off. "While we may not have known the life you were in, we were still a part of the same crowd."
Adriana's tongue clicked against the roof of her mouth. "Same crowd or not, I am stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to this hit. Damon crossed a line with this." Her words had barely been above a whisper.
Bonnie sighed. "How close is this person?"
"We were all in the sandbox together." Adriana said with a nod. "But I can't give you more than that." She shook her head.
Bonnie nodded her head in understanding. "You obviously care for this person. I know this is going to be hard for you to take care of."
"Taking care of it is the easy part. It's getting my emotions in check that will be the hardest." Adriana's voice was emotionless as she spoke about it.
"What happens if you don't go through with this?" Bonnie asked curiously. She probably shouldn't have asked, but she couldn't help it with how Adriana was looking at the moment.
Adriana thought about her answer. All she could think about was Greta's voice in her mind at that moment.
"You are not to fail." Greta said as she circled Adriana.
Adriana stood tall as Greta took her steps around her. After all the training Greta had put her through, Adriana was the perfect killing machine. Everything Greta knew, she taught Adriana, and she made it better.
"And if I fail?" Adriana asked the moment Greta was back in front of her.
The woman took a few steps towards her until she was right in her face. "You may as well as turn that pistol on you before the buyer finds out. It's never pretty, Rosa. Cause once they get a hold of you, you're gonna wish you had done it yourself."
Sighing, Adriana brought the cup up to her lips and took a drink of the hot liquid. "It's either them or me. And I kind of like having the air in my lungs."
"Damon wouldn't-" Bonnie began, but Adriana stopped her.
"This is a business." Adriana stopped in her tracks and looked over at Bonnie. "I knew what I was getting myself into the moment I left. Salvatore is no different from his father, and I've seen what is done to those who go against Damon's orders."
Adriana didn't miss the way Bonnie's eyes widened at her words. As much as Bonnie had been learning from Elena and Caroline, they were blind to what went on behind closed doors. It is evident to Adriana that this wasn't the world Bonnie belonged in.
"Are you going to go through with it?" Bonnie asked a moment later.
Adriana shrugged. "We'll see how deep down the rabbit hole I go tonight."
_____
Marcel's eyes scanned the list of connections to Damon Salvatore that started with a V. The list still held a decent amount of people on it. Most of them had a record. While a part of the list was still locked away and a few others were six feet under, two names were sticking out to him the most.
Shaking his head slightly, he sighed. The names were going to make things harder. Getting up from his seat and grabbing the paper, he headed over towards Rebekah and Elijah, who had been talking away about the case.
"You guys might want to see this." He said as he approached them and held out the paper.
Rebekah took the paper, and her eyes scanned the list. "Is this the known associates of Salvatore?"
"Yes." Marcel said with a nod. "Going back as far as the sandbox."
It was as her eyes landed on the same names Marcel had taken notice of that they widened. "That doesn't mean anything."
Elijah took the list away from his sister as she spoke. He went through the list quickly, trying to figure out what they had been talking about. His heart dropped at the names.
"We knew this." He said, shaking his head. "Vega and Salvatore were always tied together."
"You heard Rosa, though." Marcel said, looking at Elijah. "Only one of them was a sitting duck."
"It might be time to go speak with them and see what they know." Rebekah said, placing her hand on her brother's shoulder. "Victor is the only one who is still out in the open, and he might just be the connection to Rosa we need."
Elijah sighed. "Adriana isn't going to like this."
“The Mikaelsons to come and question a Vega isn’t going to sit well with either of them.” Marcel added.
“It might be better to give her a call as a heads up.” Rebekah said as she turned to grab her things.
Marcel grimaced. “She’ll still give us hell.”
Elijah shook his head. “Better to have before than after we get there.” He pulled his phone out and dialed her number.
The phone rang a few times before Adriana answered.
“Hello?”
“Adri, I hate to be the barer of bad news, but we are going to be heading over to speak with your father.” Elijah said as watched Marcel grab his things.
“Is there a reason, Mikaelson?” Elijah hadn’t missed the venom in her words.
“We believe he may be able to help us out in a case.” He wanted to give her as much information as possible without actually discussing the case.
“What case? The same one you questioned Caroline for?”
“Yes.” He said with a nod, even though she couldn’t see it. “Just a couple questions. If you’d like someone to be there, we’ll wait.”
“If my father leaves in cuffs from the house after you are done asking your questions, you won’t like what comes next.”
A small smirk pulled at Elijah’s lips. “Is that a threat, Adri?”
Adriana’s chuckle came through the line before she hung up.

2020 - What A Great Year!
There's nothing like disease and death on a mass scale to remind us that bar crawls and barbecues aren't everything. Almost, but not quite. I'll miss this year: the grim news reports, the vacant streets, the realization upon waking that Trump really is President ... 😱😥😖😔 ... that urinal smell of fear. It hasn't been boring; I hate boring. Managed to finally finish all five seasons of Chuck. Had a major fight with my brother. Cared for the elderly and the mentally ill (still talking about family). Resolved to spend my last days in an Arizona desert trailer park with my telescope and a satellite wifi connection. Ah, paradise!
We had plans to visit Japan this year, a long-held dream of mine, but the pandemic put the kbosh on that. My increasingly bad knees and feet may put the kbosh on future plans. All this kboshing is getting to me. I need to switch it out with some kvetching or klatching maybe (wait; pandemic; no klatching; damn). In 2019, my in-laws' home city of Hong Kong became engaged in a titanic struggle between youthful residents who fear a creeping authoritarianism and the single party communist government who want to bring the city more in line with its mainland counterparts. We watched in pain and fear for family as well as admiration for the protestors' resolve. In 2020 the pandemic also put the kbosh on mass protests. Smaller, bemasked actions have broken out here and there but not with the same safety in numbers. Kboshing postponed perhaps forever a travel dream of mine. It postponed perhaps forever Hong Kong's dream of a freer future. It brings perspective.
When I hear Americans kvetch about their loss of freedoms due to the pandemic I'm led to wonder: how do citizens of poor nations that face epidemic diseases on a daily basis get their party on? I mean, do they just accept that one third of the guests will die? Or if they're more careful than we are how are they able to meet their needs for Jell-O shots and beer pong? Perhaps we should commission a study. Just a thought.
Complaints about loss of income are, of course, more understandable. Nothing creates more fear and stress than the feeling that your family's well-being is threatened. That's primal. That's hard-wired in. So when self-serving politicians and media providers help to spread conspiracy theories that the pandemic is a hoax perpetrated by the Deep State (a phrase we Progessives used to use) it's no wonder that protests break out and trust in government health authorities sinks even lower than it already was. Why would politicians and media providers do such a thing? Power. Influence. Money. All three or some combination thereof. Some of the oldest motives in human history. Hollywood hasn't helped with its endless string of conspiracy thrillers and persistent view that if the military or CIA is involved it must be for sinister reasons. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with patriotism and service; how silly. Conservative pundits who excoriate liberals as radicals and extremists create absurdly cartoonish pictures in people's minds. Do you know what my fellow progressives do? We teach, we help mentally ill people, we take care of unwanted kids, we deliver water to areas with poisoned water supplies, we take time off to build houses for people. We do all these terrible things and then get insulted for it by obnoxious conservative commentators. Huh, I wonder where all this anger and disgust comes from.
The greatest disease we Americans face is smugness. We are all infected. We all get up in our heads and our emotions. We all pronounce judgment on other Americans like Charlton Heston and his tablets. One of the sure signs that the disease is progressing is when we fail to see it in ourselves but sure as hell see it in others. I know I can be arrogant. So can everyone I've ever met or known of in any way. Except maybe Jesus. When you're God the only direction you can go is humble. Once you cut through all the myths and lies and bullshit stories we tell ourselves we're just kids on a playground fighting to make our place. One of the greatest gifts of the pandemic is getting us to shut the hell up for awhile. It wasn't long - maybe two or three months starting in March - but for a short while we were all watching the numbers tick up and the body count rise. Some of us were infected. Some of us have loved ones who died. Fear has a way of undercutting smugness. Maybe that's what we need more of in 2021: fear. An alien invasion, an asteroid careening towards us, a revival of CATS. Something to make us forget how important and angry we are. It could just save the human race and make 2020 lead into the best year ever!

Is there really not a perfect 11.5-13.5" Windows tablet choice?!
Hello guys. For the past week i've been researching to find the perfect windows tablet choice for my specific application need. However it seems there isn't even one device that doesn't have some type of throwback. I'm not asking for everything, but it seems it is either hit or miss, even if you take into account overpriced products. Please hear me out and let me know your thoughts.
I am essentially looking for a WINDOWS TABLET which its primary purpose is to be fitted to my car as a secondary "dash" per say so i can use it to interact with my aftermarket motorsports ecu. It will function as a monitoring dash for the most of the time, but can be used to datalog (aka record data) or for direct tuning (so i don't have to bring my laptop everytime i need to make changes to my engine calibration). I wouldn't mind using it at home as well since i will have it, but mostly will work as a travel/trip companion since i have a PC at home. It has to be a WINDOWS tablet as the software that interfaces with the ecu is only windows based.
After thinking and revising my requirements several times after getting disappointed by what is available here is the break down:
Dimensions: Height needs to be around ~205mm +10mm max so the tablet can be secured in the glove box when not in use. Ideally height should be maximized so that the display area is maximized as well. Length larger than 300mm is not a problem but would get annoying to fit to the car since it will extend more towards the passenger side. This effectively limits me to ~11.8-13.3" tablets, so Microsoft Surface Pro can be used as a reference design (since i haven't seen bezel-less windows tablets yet) Display: This is the most important attribute of the tablet. 1080p absolute minimum resolution, 2K ideally, 3K is probably not gonna be noticeable at the usage distance. Here is a screenshot from my 1080p laptop so you can see the ECU software in datalog mode (slightly cropped but so you can get an idea: http://content.invisioncic.com/r260425/monthly_2017_09/fuel_pressure_link.png.bc827c0a96fe120632f1d7c168e66a64.png However let's not forget brightness and contrast. Brightness should be ~400nits or better for a glossy display, and contrast should be considered over color accuracy. Viewing angle in the length span should be at least 150deg but i think it is hard nowadays to find such a bad display panel. Finally a fully laminated panel is recommended. Physical interfaces: I essentially need a single full size USB port so i can connect my ECU to the tablet. After my research i decided to allow for USB-C assuming that i can get a dongle that will allow me to interface without any issues; but it's best not to allow for that route due to possible incompatibility issues (like what happened when usb3.0 was released). Extra USB ports, USB-C that allows charging and data, video output port, headphone jack, m.2 expansion slot, sd card slot are all pluses. Wireless interfaces: Min wifi and bluetooth. 802.11AC and bluetooth v4.2 or better all pluses. CPU/GPU performance: Generally something better than N3450 (tested my brother's CHUWI surbook mini) and more recent will help, GPU performance is irrelevant for the task so the majority of intergrated GPU's will do fine. RAM: 4GB absolute minimum, 8gb ideal Cooling: I prefer passive cooling, but usually the cooling solution used is sh*t. At least in some cases it can be modded (i'm experienced and willing to do) Battery: 4 hours light use with full display brightness as minimum. If charging is performed over USB-C i hope it is not the stupid kind of power->battery->device like in phones and can work like in laptops where the battery is not used when power is supplied to the laptop. This way you don't wear out the battery since the device will be connected to power most of the time it is operated. Storage: 64gb absolute min, ideal min should be 128gb, speed is relative but i think at least m.2 sata interface ssd; NVME huge + Others: Pen support and attachable keyboard are pluses, but i plan on using a good bluetooth keyboard with backlight (required) so it makes them irrelevant if the tablet is good, Thunderbolt 3 is a +, unlocked bios +, kickstand should work on a lap without cutting your pants off and stay in one place, sd card reader + Reliability: From what i read most chinese tablets are pretty bad with both hardware and software issues out of the box. Backcover should be metal to act as heatsink and be stiff enough, weight and thickness is not that important Condition: New or used. I believe some products offer better value when bought used and others because have been discontinued Pricing: My budget is flexible but depending on the features lots of them are overpriced especially bought new. I would say ~500eur for a new tablet with min features required and 1000eur for one with better hardware. Considering i'm building a 7nm PC in a couple of months the market pricing is really unacceptable for most windows tablets. Blame Apple for it, but i'm not a rich consumer neither i am a sheep. Performance to value is what i always look for.
I literally checked every windows tablet and 2-in-1 i believe. Here some potential picks and what i didn't like.
Microsoft Surface Pro (4 - 5 - 6): At first glance it is a good base candidate..but..really Microsoft? It's 2019 and no USB-C? Proprietary connector and overpriced hardware? Questionable reliability? Get the f*ck out of here. Unless you find a good used deal i don't think it would be worth it. Another Apple wannabe. Eve-tech EVE V: This is one tablet that hits all the boxes, kinda, since by now it is almost obsolete in terms of CPU performance..sadly while i'm greek-cypriot i would go with the stereotypical view for greeks because the CEO is a "malakas" and i'm really sorry to all the people that were scammed. On the other hand i believe there is some truth to the Paypal issues he had since my friend had similar issues (because of not much experience) and even I couldn't help him get them fixed as Paypal is run by assholes as well which need a punch to the face (their excuse it is the system and they can't do anything about it - like wtf). I still use it but the time a different payment system reaches similar adoption i would gladly switch. Chuwi Surbook: Slow CPU, screen is not fully laminated, mediocre specs but was good price at some time ago. Maybe the announced "surbook pro" would fair better? Voyo Vbook i5/i7 Plus: Nice screen, fair pricing? Not the most quality build, shitty battery, i7 model throttles? Teclast X6 Pro: A slightly better vbook i5? No full detailed reviews yet, and i wasn't that impressed from the previous X5 review Alldocube Knote 8: Seems good on paper, but no type-A usb ports Jumper EZpad 6: Possibly the only windows tablet in stock with a good value, however i need something with a better and larger display Acer Switch 3/5: Mediocre screens, single type-A port on the right side (since my car is RHD and the ecu is on the left side i would prefer it on the left side), shitty battery performance, a little overpriced Dell XPS 12 9290/Latitude 5290/Latitude 7285: Great displays, powerful, only 5290 has type-A port, mediocre battery life, overpriced but there are good used deals Asus Transformer 3 Pro T303UA/T304UA: Premium specs but discontinued, expensive, only 1 type-A port and it is on the right side (again), T304 is a huge step backwards even though newer (what the heck Asus, are you drunk?) Lenovo ThinkPad X1: Overpriced, no type-A ports, Gen3 is too big and has display coating issues, Gen2 is more suitable due to size and type-a interface but older and screen brightness not that good - all too tall Lenovo MIIX series: new 630 uses an ARM processor so no go (since i can't force the software developpers to re-compile), 720 rates very high in the features i need, 2 usb type-A ports, nice display, etc. 520 is a little newer with weaker hardware but still good for its price HP Pro X2/Envy X2/Elite X2 1012: HP's other offerings like the Elite X2 1013 are too tall for my needs, and while they have good displays and good build quality i am not font of their design decisions. I have a Zbook 17 G5 workstation at work we bought new and not even 6 months passed and the CPU fan now rattles like crazy..here's my 1st day rant about it: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Note-to-HP-Zbook-17-G5-design-engineers-Please-read-and/td-p/6914797 Also they are overpriced like crazy. I wouldn't ever think of buying again from them. Also the power supply is proprietary as some of the internal hardware. F*ck HP Huawei MateBook E: Aside the lack of ports it is a pretty good designed device, display is perfect but slightly smaller than the biggest i can fit - depending on price it might be a good consideration assuming i can run a USB-C dock i can charge within the car Samsung Galaxy Book 12: Similar to the Huawei above, just a little faster but with a worse display, extra usb-C port. Older and more expensive than the Huawei Toshiba Portege X30T and others: Ports are on the keyboard and not on the tablet, won't work for me.
I think i've covered 99% of the options but i may could have missed 1 or 2. To be honest i won't need this tablet for another 3-6months i would guess but at least i've done my research so i will be prepared when the time comes to buy one. What do you think? I know i went a little crazy but i'm that type of person that never regrets his purchasing choices because i don't buy blindly.

hey just wondering what do you use when you do your art on the computer? like what are you drawing on & what programs do you use? I'm trying to figure out what to get for a drawing tablet so I thought I'd ask what you use
i’ve got a lot of different stuff i use depending on my mood, but here’s a breakdown of what i use and what i’ve used in the past.
TL;DR:
i use a wacom intuos pro (medium size) with clip studio paint for sketching at my computer
i actually color my art in adobe illustrator cc, but i mostly use my mouse for this actually
sometimes i use a samsung galaxy tab A with S pen as a portable digital sketchbook. i’ve liked autodesk sketchbook as the app for this but there’s tons of free art apps out there. i transfer the sketches to my computer and finish them with illustrator from there.
i also have a 2-in-1 laptop with a pen that i use for art occasionally, but i wouldn’t recommend this route unless you already need a laptop
sometimes still i use a plain paper sketchbook and photograph/scan my sketches to color them digitially in illustrator. i like using colored mechanical pencils for this, with normal mechanical pencils or pens for a refining pass if i need it
i have a lot to say about my tablets specifically, so i’ve got a sort of detailed comparison of buying a wacom tablet vs buying an android tablet below the cut (in case it sounds like an appealing option to you)
as a point of interest, since i only use my tablets for sketching, this is very oriented around usability for sketching. other artists that finish their art with their tablet may have different opinions on what’s viable. overall, what sort of thing you need depends on what sort of art you want to make - vector art (which is what i make) can easily be done with a mouse, but if you’re interested in digital painting or more typical techniques you’ll probably prefer a wacom tablet since there’s more powerful software available.
first up, wacom intuos tablets. these are what most people are talking about when they mention art tablets. there’s some cheaper brands (such as Huion) that are starting to gain popularity, but i’ve never owned any before so i can’t give advice there. here’s the newer model of what i use: LINK
pros:
wacom is the gold standard most tablets are compared to. they have good pressure sensitivity, (mostly) well-behaved drivers, and feel good to use and last a while (especially if you don’t stress the cable by using it on your lap, etc)
good features - shortcut buttons, pressure sensitivity, etc. are all really nice. they feel pretty good to use
PC art software - since this hooks into your computer, you can use it with the standard art tools that people use like photoshop, SAI, clip studio, etc. in this way, it’s very flexible in what you can do with it
comes in many sizes/features/price points - there’s some expensive and huge wacom tablets but also some smaller cheaper ones. you can usually find one that does the stuff you want. i’d say you probably want a Medium size one, though, because the small tablets are quite cramped and awkward to draw on in my experience, and the large ones are massive.
older models available - you can get cheaper wacoms if you look around for slightly older models (mine is an “Intuos Pro Pen & Touch“). i don’t know how reliable refurbished ones are, but older models in general are just as good as the newest ones since the main features don’t change much from year to year
cons:
basic slate tablet - if you’ve never drawn on these types of tablets before, there’s a large learning curve while you get used to looking up at a screen while drawing with your hand
hard to use without a desk - if you use a laptop or have limited desk space, these are hard to use easily and the cables are more likely to crap out on you if you use it in your lap. the cables are always the part that breaks
pricy - for what you get, these are expensive. there are cheaper alternatives - i’ve never owned any, so i can’t say if it’s worth it, but they exist. replacement pens/nibs are also kind of pricy if something breaks
i’ve also used samsung galaxy/note android tablets (specifically, any galaxy tablet that comes with an S pen), which can’t hook up to the computer. i have one of these right now, which isn’t too pricy since it’s a few years old: LINK
pros:
basically a cheap display tablet that you can draw directly on. these can be easier to work with if you’re not used to drawing on a basic slate tablet, and are a much cheaper way to do this than buying a cintiq or full-size monitor tablet
Good Enough features - the S pen is unique in that it has pressure sensitivity, which $5 capacitive styluses on any old tablet will not. this is a key feature for natural-feeling drawing
no computer necessary - i love being able to draw on the couch or when i’m out or travelling. these work great as a portable digital sketchbook
android tablet - since this is actually a tablet with a pen as a feature, you get everything you can do with a tablet, like watching videos in bed or web browsing or travelling or whatever. in this way it’s not a single-purpose purchase like a dedicated drawing tablet is
cons:
stuck with android - you can’t use these seamlessly with your computer. there’s some tricks you can do but none of them work very well. you’re basically stuck with the art software on the app store, which is good for sketching but pretty limited for finishing artwork
can feel cramped - tablets are increasingly designed for portrait orientation so they can feel sort of narrow for drawing. YMMV here, it’s just something i’ve noticed
these just aren’t quite as accurate or Great for drawing as a dedicated drawing tablet is. it’s definitely just “good enough” but it has enough of its own benefits to be a solid choice if some of those pros sound appealing
ultimately, i feel like both of these are good choices, but for different reasons. if you want to be able to do nicer raster artwork with PC software, you’ll want a wacom tablet. if you mostly want something to sketch with, an android tablet would also work well with the benefit of being portable. if you’re not sure what sort of art you want to do, i’d recommend a wacom tablet or similar since it leaves your options more open.
that was a lot more than i planned on typing but i hope this helps you figure out what would work for you!

My take on Windows 8
Now that I've gotten used to it, I like it.
For most of us, change occurs far too frequently.
When Microsoft or Apple releases a significant operating system update, some users are resistant to the transition. Why should I feel compelled to learn something fresh and unusual? I'd grown accustomed to doing things that way, and now I must learn to do things differently!
Bug fixes and added functionality are the two main reasons for upgrades. Fixing flaws can make the OS more secure and smoother to use. Hardware advancements like as touchscreens, faster and larger memory, and Cloud integration are all part of providing functionality.
On a Dell laptop from the Vista days, I first installed a pre-release (beta) version of Windows 8. I had some idea what to expect because I had done my homework.
Where's My Start Button
Everyone was enthralled by the fact that the Start button was vanished! There was a new screen called the Start Screen, which was made up of tiles or rectangles that constantly refreshed. The original desktop display was also still present. So, what do I do now?
Relax. It's still Windows, though. If you choose, smart programmers can make the new User Interface look exactly like the old User Interface. I prefer to study and work with new materials. It is, without a doubt, a superior option for me. Listen to Jim and Chris discuss Windows 8 and the Start screen in our most recent Gabbing with the Geeks episode.
Find Your Corner
I've discovered that the screen's borders and corners conceal all of the answers and features. The new Start icon can be found by moving your mouse cursor to the lowest left corner of the screen. The Live Tiles Start Screen appears when you click it. This is where you begin! You can put the tiles in a logical arrangement if you want. Tiles can be made for nearly any purpose. They're the application shortcuts you've created. Once you get used to it, it's far superior to the previous start menu and desktop icons. To search for an application, simply start typing at the Start screen. You may get to the Start scree by clicking here.
On the right side of the screen, there is a special "Charms" option. Moving your mouse pointer to the bottom right corner and then up is one technique to get to it. The charms are available at all times. Search is the first charm. It's a potent tool that changes depending on the situation. You have the ability to look for anything, anyplace. Settings is the bottom charm. This is where you can turn the computer off or restart it.
Microsoft released two operating systems that used the same name. The first, Windows 8 RT, would be less expensive and run on tablets, similar to Android or iPad. It could run Microsoft applications, but not my older Windows ones. For many users, this may be sufficient.
Windows 8 Pro is designed to work on "real" machines. Desktops and laptops. And Microsoft was releasing a tablet that will run all of my old programs as well as a slew of new touch-screen apps. The Surface Pro is the device in question. It comes in two different configurations. One has a 64-gigabyte solid-state drive, while the other has a 128-gigabyte SSD. Micro SD cards or USB hard drives can be used to expand memory, although it is designed to work with Sky Drive in the cloud.
In my mobile office, I truly like how I've set up my workspace.
The 10.6" HD touch screen hides the entire computing equipment. My primary monitor is a 22" video monitor, and my secondary monitor is a smaller screen. A conventional keyboard, mouse, and local printer are connected through a USB hub, and I can add more peripherals and drives as needed. When I need to travel with my computer, I simply unplug the monitor and hub, snap in the keyboard/cover, and I'm ready to go. It's now my primary computer.
My Internet connection is normally provided by the FoxFi hotspot app on my Droid RAZR smartphone. The Surface Pro power supply includes a USB charging port.
There's still a lot to learn. We've developed a new Forum section dedicated solely to Windows 8. Anyone can read the Forums, but you must be a member of Geeks On Tour to ask a question.
On Windows 8, we might do some films. On June 30-July 5, we will be holding a Windows 8 lecture at the Escapade in Gillette, Wyoming. Meanwhile, we discovered The Missing Windows 8 Instructional Video on YouTube. It's about 25 minutes long and covers everything you need to know. edutech.

hiya! Have you got any tips for editing your work? i wrote a chapter the other day, came back to it to edit it and found out it was 9k words lmao... needless to say I'm having a hard time fixing up the whole thing without it taking ages!
Oh man, I've definitely had chapters like that. I aim to average about 3k words a chapter, but I let them get bigger or smaller depending on content. It's all about the flow of the story, to me. BUT, that's not what you asked. So, editing tips, huh? Well, I can certainly go over my process. To be honest, I am not the best editor, because I'm usually too impatient to do a proper job. Still, I do HAVE a process, and I always edit at least a little because posting something without editing, to me, is like jumping into a lake of fiery acid in nothing but my birthday suit. It's gonna burn, and oh boy am I gonna have regrets. The bare minimum of editing that I will do on any given story looks a little something like this:1. Write the whole chapter. 2. Read through and adjust where needed. 3. Copy text from Scrivener (my main writing program) into Microsoft Word. Read through again and use the MS Word grammar/spellcheck to catch any missed errors. (you can also use a program called Grammarly that is pretty nifty with this step, too. I'm not a grammar savant, so I like to rely on software to catch the things that I missed because I type how I talk, which is atrocious apparently). 4. Copy text from MS Word and paste into AO3, click preview, and read through again to check for errors and format. 5. PostFor stories like Tearing Down the Heavens and As Bright as the Stars, that was about all I did. I didn't need to do a ton of editing for those because they were lighter to write. For stories like One Hundred Years in the Making or The Traveler, however, this process gets a LOT more complex. Those stories have complicated narratives, and I am balancing several different plot threads at any given time in any given chapter. There are layers on top of layers, and it gives the writing and editing process a whole new flavor. For more complicated stories, the process starts to look more like this: 1. Write the whole chapter. 1a: stop in the middle, double back to check something, realize that it isn't right and redo three paragraphs. 1b: re-read through the beginning of the chapter to get the flow again1c: realize that I forgot to foreshadow something and add it1d: actually write the rest of the chapter2. Read through and adjust where needed.2a: realize I'm still missing foreshadowing. Adjust, start the read through again.2b: realize nobody is talking like a human, not even for the fantasy genre. Edit for human flavoring. Adjust, start the read through again. 2c: Start the read through over to check for flow, make adjustments to the adjustments. 2d: check my outline and check the next few plot points coming up in the story to make sure I didn't fuck up the story progression or miss any OTHER points of foreshadowing. Make any necessary adjustments.2e: Repeat all parts of step 2 until a read through has been completed with no adjustments made.3. Copy text from Scrivener (my main writing program) into Microsoft Word. Read through again and use the MS Word grammar/spellcheck to catch any missed errors. 3a: argue with MS Word grammar check over word order. 3b. Fuck you, MS Word, "chivalry" is a perfectly valid word. 3c: check document from the beginning again to make sure I REALLY feel like I'm right and MS Word is wrong on all squiggle battles (I am not so prideful to think I actually know what I'm doing, so I like to triple check these things when a computer says I'm wrong)4. Copy text from MS Word and paste into AO3, click preview, and read through again to check for errors and format. 4a: notice something wrong, adjust. 4b: read through and make minor adjustments, then copy that back into Scrivener so I have the updated copy. 5. Post5a: hyperventilate slightly until someone commentsAnd those are just my steps for average chapters. If a chapter is Important with a capital I, then I will usually write it ahead of time and come back to edit it repeatedly. This means it will go through a lot of changes, usually with large portions being scrapped in favor of newer ones, but it ends up being polished enough to carry the weight of the big parts of the narrative. If a chapter is giving me any trouble, I usually try the following things to get through editing:Reading it out loudChanging the font as I edit Changing the medium (as in sending it to myself and reading it on my phone, or a tablet, or printing it, etc.)ReAdInG iT oUt LoUdSending it to a friend to get their opinion on something (no joke, this saved my life in the chapters of ABatS where Nicolette is in Jumin's apartment. I think I rewrote a couple of those chapters 8 or 9 times before I was happy with them, but I also needed input because I was trying to balance someone exhibiting detestable behavior while not making them out to be a detestable person, ie still garnering compassion and sympathy. It was a very fine line to walk along. "Test" readers help me get those parts right.)It's also worth noting that sometimes NOT editing right away is a better plan. With most of my fanfiction, I'm impatient and don't bother waiting because I want to post, but with Original works I will usually step away and wait at MINIMUM 24 hours before I try to edit anything. Coming back with fresh eyes can really alleviate a lot of the strain. You'll catch more, have a better grasp of the flow, and be more constructive while you edit. The flip side of that is that you shouldn't wait TOO long. If you wander off into the woodlands and return to your words a year later, you will have grown as a person and a writer, thus making what you previously wrote very inadequate and requiring EXTENSIVE edits, or the need to be rewritten. And while that is good for some projects, if you table everything and continuously come back to rewrite it, then you will finish nothing. Older work should be like shrines dedicated to your progress, not a phoenix rising from the ashes of the past every time you decide you want to give it a new polish. Now, since you said the chapter is 9k, I would recommend reading through it a couple of times. Longer chapters tend to require more attention to the flow, so that each thought transitions to the next properly. This can, of course, change if you have it split by different POV shifts or otherwise broke it up into smaller, more digestible chunks. But with a chapter that long, it needs to flow VERY smoothly through the different segments, otherwise you will have people's attention span snapping in the middle. Then THEY'LL wander off into the woods and get eaten by bears, and the news outlets will find out they had been reading your chapter, and there will be organizations formed of angry mothers who hold up signs and declare that your words drive people to death by bear. That probably isn't what you are going for with the chapter, so...yeah. There has to be a sort of heartbeat to the words, that keeps urging the eyes to keep going down the page and the reader to keep thinking "oh yes, but what then?". Flow and a sense of good pacing are paramount to longer chapters. I think one of the chapters I hated editing the MOST was Chapter 4 of Facing Down the Void. It was a solid, 6400 word chunk of exposition, and I poured over it several times trying to make sure that it flowed well enough to support what was happening. It was basically ALL dialogue, and had several parties to account for in the conversation, so I drove myself nuts trying to make sure it was balanced. Even then, I'm sure if I picked it up and looked at it again I would feel like it needed some re-writing (something I will eventually get to, once I catch back up in my DA stories and get to writing that one again). In the end, if you want to SHORTEN editing time, then I recommend taking a break and coming back to it in 24 hours. Then, when you return, pop it into a different font and read it out loud to yourself. You will probably only have to read through twice before you have worked out all the kinks. I hope that helped, Anon Friend!!!
