do you have any recommendations on how to get into The Doors lore?
(cheesy smile) I'm so glad you asked :)
this sounds kind of counter-intuitive, but I would actually recommend starting from The Lies and working your way backwards. the movie The Doors (1991), for instance, will provide you a great overarching lore framework as long as you understand going in that its not very accurate on the details (except for the concert sequences which are almost scary). after you watch it, you can research what it gets right and wrong, and get a clearer picture than you would from just doing that in the first place. if you're a big reader, the same goes for books like 'no one here gets out alive' (a classic) and 'light my fire' (ray's rpf autobiography).
the best place to get a real accurate picture of things (imo) is the guitarist robby krieger's autobiography 'set the night on fire'. of the three remaining doors after jim's death, robby is definitely the most reliable narrator, and in the book he goes out of his way to tell the "real" story to the best of his ability and dispel a lot of myths. but like I said, it kind of helps to know the myths beforehand.
you can find pdfs of all three books I mention here in my resources folder (along with jim's poetry if that interests you). robby's book is also on audiobook on spotify and its very well done.
#I guess 'start with the lies and work backwards' is kind of how it is for every band#but with the doors we're dealing with like. ancient greek levels of mythology#my print version of 'no one here gets out alive' has a different much longer forward that is just astoundingly jimpilled#i can't find it online so I'll have to scan it when I get back to my apartment after winter break#I consider it a must read#asks#the doors

#metropolis 1949#metropolis manga#tezuka star system#mitchy#kenichi#art tag#i dont think i consider metropolis a must-read unless youre a hardcore tezuka fan but it IS a very interesting one#especially as a fan of astro boy metropolis 2001 AND metropolis 1927#mitchy is the son of fritz lang's false maria and the mother of atom#and the whole work is a fascinating reminder of the cyclical and referential nature of all art#(not to say metropolis 1949 doesnt have value standing on its own- it totally does and i really enjoyed reading it)#(but it's almost impossible to look at completely on its own given its place in this long chain of things vaguely inspired by each other)#(all of which are much more well-known)

Ivypool's Heart: Finished
Just completed reading the new super edition! I'm pleasantly surprised by this one. Overall, this was a very good book, MUCH better than the past 3 which were some of the most boring and unnecessary entries to the entire franchise.
If you were on the fence about this one, I'd recommend it. Just take this warning; it does the Warrior Cats thing where it harps pretty strong on parenthood and nuclear families being a borderline essential part of life, including a ton of bashing on how uniquely horrible this makes the Sisters.
If you can get past that, it's a pretty solid story about grief that makes some really fun additions to the WC lore, including the wildcats, StormClan, and a broad expansion to the afterlife system.
Meandering thoughts below the cut;
One of IPH's biggest flaws is pacing, but it's not nearly as bad as the past 3 SEs.
Not to mention, this is a pretty small SE. If you're ever bored, it won't last long.
Before the book introduces the Wildcats, it REALLY meanders. It'll pick up, but you will have to wade through relatively uninteresting scenes of the cats traveling and talking about their feelings unprompted.
A lot of "quicktime events" happen out of nowhere to fill pages with cats running away from random bullshit.
There's a horse carriage, an apple picker, dogs, weasels, foxes, a storm, traffic, humans, boats, sandwhiches. It's endless. My eyes glazed over during most of these scenes.
I know a lot of people were dreading Ivypool being nasty and unreasonable during this book, but honestly? I was hoping for it and didn't really receive it.
I find her most compelling when she's holding a grudge, acting on her anger, and generally working through messy issues. But aside from her just thinking about being annoyed or angry, she's really not snappy at all.
I feel like there could have been a lot more interesting and organic conflict between Icewing, Dovewing, and Ivypool's personalities instead of boring Quicktime Events. In fact, I felt like Icewing and Dovewing were kind of underutilized.
The conversations often feel quite stiff, especially in the first half. Everyone is very understanding of each other, respect boundaries and knows not to push too far, resolve their personal issues very easily, etc. It's kinda... unnatural.
Personally, I found that disappointing because I WANTED to see the cats actually process their grief over the course of the book. Watch them act out, maybe get in an fight or two and resolve it for the sake of the mission, have them come to a greater understanding of each other, etc.
Because Icewing and Dovewing are both so motherly and gentle and we're in Ivypool's POV, we don't really get to see them process their grief because of that.
They're not TOTALLY neglected though! I just... wanted more from this group.
However. I wanted LESS Rootspring.
I understand he's there to process the loss of Bristlefrost with Ivypool but god, every time he was on screen I wanted to push him aside and talk to Icewing lmao.
Stop trying to sell me "cool, mellowed from grief" Rootspring. He's a silly little hyperactive man and you will never be able to convince me otherwise.
As a silly little hyperactive semi-manthing myself, it would have been a lot more cathartic to see a clown like me going through grief. Not to mention just generally make for better chemistry with the group.
Between Ice and Dove who are already quite chill as characters, Whistle could have used someone more goofy to bounce off of.
I REALLY didn't like the whole implication that Rootspring is going to move on from Bristlefrost and "find a mother" for the kittens he wants so badly, though.
Erins PLEASE remember that adoption exists. He does not need a wife to be a dad. I'm beaming myself directly into your brains and telepathy-ing directions to the nearest cat adoption agency
aaaaaand on that note.... yeah. I did not like the way that this book leaned so hard on the whole "nuclear family" dynamic. Ivypool has had like two major interactions with her husband and one JUST happened in this book.
It especially bugged me that they leaned into Ivypool having been a very active mother, when we saw very little of that in the ACTUAL book. It wasn't even mentioned that Fernsong was allegedly the primary parent of the kittens when they were young.
But... I was able to look past it and just accept the book in a vacuum. There's a lot of good here.
Like the wildcats.
While I'm still wary of these being Scottish Wildcats and reserve my misgivings about the misuse of species that are very unlike domestic cats... I LOOOOVEEE the culture they've set up for them
I LOVEE the way that individual spirits reach out to the kits, guiding them through life
I LOVE the connection to StormClan
I LOVE their idea of the elements and general spirituality
And I LOVED the fact that a big part of Ivypool coming to terms with her grief was the expansion of her worldview. The way that she realized the religion she was raised with is quite small, and that there is an immense beauty in coming to understand other cultures, accept their advice, and see the world as they do.
I just wish the book had been able to tie that to a flaw that Ivypool has expressed since her very introduction back in OotS-- that she's smallminded.
It would have been a FANTASTIC way to really tackle and address that flaw, and pay off literal decades of set up. I really wish she had been messier in this book because of that!
But, digressing.
I'm over the moon that the team's actually playing with the series' spirituality! After such a long time of them outright avoiding some of the weirder elements in the series, like Rock and Midnight, it's exciting that they're finding some freedom in making new magic lore for themselves.
Hopefully, in the next few super editions, we'll be able to get some more insight to StormClan and the Wildcats.
The book really hits its stride in the second half because of this, and the ending chapters are actually fantastic. Some of the best stuff that's come out of the series (on purpose) in a loooong time.
#bones reads iph#Ivypool's Heart Spoilers#And with that... I must now consider what to keep for BB and what to not.

“Beware…Dracula!” Miguel O’Hara — Spider-Man 2099 (Vol. 1/2024), #2.

#everyone is of course free to read any text however they desire#however i must admit. when people comment on telltale (my lawlight fic) seeming to consider it domestic fluff#it does confuse and distress me slightly. just slightly.#i feel like i did not sufficiently make my point in this case#(again however if this is how you wish to read it to bring you joy then do so)#(and thank you for reading regardless)

i had the concept for an isekai story where the main character is an aroace succubus. no reason other than i think isekais need to be nicer to women and a squad of people with a crush on the main character who doesnt return their feelings is always funny to me. also, of course, aroace succubus.
#/#in my mind she is very tall and buff with long hair and pink/purple themed#you know what. im naming her Shara#hm. most of the isekais ive read are actually fanfictions#so maybe i could incorporate that#shara has to avert a horrible future from happening. she assists a different character acting as a gaurdian angel of sorts?#must consider further

in MDZS the novel, the innkeeper in Yunping mentions that people are too scared to go petition Yunmeng Jiang for help because someone once walked in on Sect Leader Jiang whipping a guy in the main hall, supposedly because the guy was a demonic cultivator.
#mdzs#jiang cheng#wei wuxian#jc apologism#anyways as you can hopefully tell by now this is a jc stan blog.#so as a stan i will do my rightful stan duty and insist that my fave did nothing wrong#so. onwards. the “jiang cheng tortures demonic cultivators” claim is interesting on several levels#because we don't see it happen onscreen. and because thematically mdzs is a book about the unreliability of rumors#especially when said rumors conform to your preexisting understanding of someone. or what you want to hear about someone#it would have been so easy for mxtx to include a scene where jc tortures a demonic cultivator onscreen. i would love to read it too#but that doesnt happen. when jc actually corners wwx he just shoves a dog in his face and bullies him emotionally#smh jc get your shit together!! what is this lame ass display?? not living up to your reputation here loser#anyways. tbh i consider two things separately: 1. mxtx's intentions. and 2. what the text itself implies#for 1. i am legitimately unsure of what to think. mxtx relies on rumors/empathy/etc to give us info about side characters#in part because she's constrained herself to writing from wwx's perspective and has no other easy way of getting the info to us#does she intend for us to question the rumors? or are we supposed to take them as fact because of the narration limits described?#2. what the text itself implies is not necessarily the same as what mxtx intends.#for me mdzs is in part a story about the unreliability of rumors and reputation etc etc. other meta writers than i have explained it better#so for the work to go “all the rumors about wwx were exaggerated/manipulated/not 100% correct.”#“but the rumors about everyone else are 100% true!!!!!”#is peak stupidity. and shit-tier writing#and i actually like mdzs so i would like to believe the writer is more intelligent than that#thus. i conclude in part due to this emotional necessity of mine that there must have been something more going on#anyways. i have similar opinions about the “did jiggy kill rusong” business but that's a post for later#ill probably put my jc torture opinions in their own post some day#yanyan polls

For the Spirits—Chapter III: Keep Your Plans
At the risk of feeling dumb, check in
It's not worth the risk of losing a friend
Even if they say:
“Just keep your plans, I hope
That you never have to drop
Anything for me.”
—At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb by Twenty One Pilots
.
Yume had to resist the urge to sigh. She already knew how this would go. All roads led to tea, Pai Sho, and no straight answers. If she could go back in time and reach out to her younger self, she’d warn the tired face in the mirror to enjoy Iroh’s company while he still made sense.
She cursed the Crew under her breath, doing her best to give the General a smile back or, at least, keep a straight face.
Why did I even say yes to this?

let Helen be a flawed, complicated character who's allowed to have traits that might make her unlikeable (challenge level: impossible)
#capri talks#lowkey a vent after reading someone say 'if helen loved paris and went along with him that would make her a love sick moron'#??? why are women prevented from being tragic characters??? let helen have hubris and feelings please. PLEASE.#I am quickly learning there is a whole spectrum of opinions about helen and paris on this site. im just sitting here trying to eat my salad#it's almost as if helen must be held up to some undefined moral standard or else we get people going 'what's the point of her character?'#and that makes me weep. she's so much more than that! she doesn't lose her nuance if she chooses to go with paris!#in fact there's a lot of interesting things to consider if she does!! but she can have so much nuance either way!! *screams*#okay deep breaths... i'm done ranting for now lol#helen of sparta

I've been writing my own sci-fi universe on and off after new Trek disappointed me, and has continued to disappoint me. If I had to sum it up it would be Star Trek but more overtly communist and also military sci-fi. I've mainly been inspired by things I've read/played/watched, which has mainly been made by white or western creators, so I wanted to ask if you had any recommendations for sci-fi made by POC creators to broaden my horizons.
omg of course!!! (with the caveat that unfortunately non-Western scifi specifically is a bit of a blindspot for me, so most of these will be Western authors of colour)
Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany
Dawn by Octavia E. Butler
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor (& i recommend reading the complete trilogy - imo it works best read together as one whole)
The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
New Suns: Original Speculative Fiction by People of Color ed. by Nisi Shawl
How Long 'til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin
I'm Waiting for You and Other Stories by Kim Bo-Young
And 2 that i personally haven't read yet but i think NEED to be mentioned, especially if we're talking space stories:
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee (also military scifi!)
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
also, short story anthologies!!! if you're looking for new authors or want to explore works from a specific culture/place, they're a great way to do that. here's a couple from my own reading list for this year:
Palestine + 100: Stories from a Century after the Nakba
Africa Risen: A New Era of Speculative Fiction
Readymade Bodhisattva: The Kaya Anthology of South Korean Science Fiction
Sinopticon: A Celebration of Chinese Science Fiction
& finally, i don't really watch a lot of tv/movies, but i do wanna wholeheartedly recommend:
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer (free on youtube and an absolutely top tier example of afrofuturism)
Nope
They Cloned Tyrone
#this got WAY longer than i intended and it's still far from comprehensive#but. bolding the ones that i consider the BIGGEST must-reads/watches <3#if u wanna do some more exploring on ur own in terms of non-western sf:#i've noticed there's quite a lot of translated Chinese and South Korean SF in particular#or you could look up africanfuturism (which is a separate thing from afrofuturism!) and works that use that label#also: the tv adaptation of 3 Body Problem (aka probably the most iconic piece of Chinese scifi) is coming out in a couple weeks#so that might be worth keeping an eye out for! it's netflix though so idk how good/faithful it'll be 😐#i hope this is helpful and not too much info!

Peter Parker swearing:
"Holy @$#%%" - ("Holy shit") (Amazing Spider-Man #597)
—
"@☆xxx%#@ bureaucrats!" - ("Goddamn/Fucking bureaucrats!") (Amazing Spider-Man #244)
—
"#$%& me" - ("Fuck me.") (Amazing Spider-Man #798)
—
"#^&$!&!! Johnny Storm and then %#^@$#$&@! his %@#$^!!" - (your guess is as good as mine) (FF vol 1 #17)
—
"Insulate the hell out of it." (bonus dirty talking his own suit, with his tits out) (Sensational Spider-Man vol 2 #27)
—
"Aw, #$%&." ("Aw, shit," knowing Slott's Whedon-esque dialogue patterns, but I'm choosing to read it as "Aw, fuck" instead) (Spider-Man vol 4 #10)
Marvel Team-Up #9 "Fagged out" — not strictly swearing per se but...
—
Will add more as I come across them.
I'm trying to amass a collection... literally no reason other than "for funsies" lol — so on the off chance anyone wants to send me any other scenes of Peter swearing or saying questionably inappropriate things, feel free! i just ask you to keep it to 616 comics peter/spidey only, preferably, and please include the issue number 🙏
(also don't send me the panel of Ben cussing out a news reporter (iirc), or panels of Kaine. I'm not putting them in this post cause that doesn't count as Peter; they're different people.)
#nadia reads comics#peter parker#spiderman#I have ideas of what he might be saying in FF no 17 but ultimately it's a mystery#fuck johnny storm and fuck his corpse?? maybe?? or some kind of unspeakable violence that must be censored#(or at least is censored to give the impression that it's the worst thing the reader can think of someone saying XD)#perhaps something about castration?#i almost included the panel where he says ''Me¸ I'm fagged out.'' from marvel team-up no 9 but idk if i consider that swearing necessarily#differences in linguistic roots aside#peter swearing#to make this easy to find and edit#have i mentioned lately that i think dan slott is a bad writer?

thinking about the way that lady macbeth convinces macbeth to kill duncan and yeah she talks about power and cowardice and what he owes to himself and to her, but at the heart of the whole thing is how their child died and she has nothing else to pin her hopes for the future on. unfortunately the fact that they no longer have an heir is also the driving force behind macbeth’s violent paranoia toward banquo which ultimately dooms them
#like the last thing she does before he agrees to go through with the murder is invoke the loss of her motherhood#that’s what gives him the push. i could scream. it’s evil because they both think they’re doing it for the other person#and how could their relationship NOT fall apart after that honestly? how can you do that for someone and not grow to resent it?#and the fact that we have no details except that she must have had a child at some point if she’s able to nurse a child#and the fact that the matter of children and childbearing is so fraught in the play#oh my god. i could tear off all my skin thinking about it#AND that he kills macduff’s infant son in cold blood…. fucked up#anyway….. the modern reading of lady m as sympathetic because she only wants what’s best for her husband is correct imo#but when you consider this context it becomes even more so because he is her entire family now#due to the mundane perversion of a child dying before their parents#that’ll fuck you up. god forbid women do anything#macbeth

my controversial gw2 opinion of the day is that i actually like isgarren. dont get me wrong. i think he's objectively wrong about everything and also kind of a brat. that's the thing and the problem though. i like isgarren because he's kind of a massive whiny tantrum baby fussy drama queen.. he took brat summer and turned it into brat epoch !
#my stuff#this is a lot of tumblr friendly words to say i like him bc hes kinda a fruit btw#i do not think that he is smart either btw ☝️ book smart perhaps but nothing else#i think he's MEANT to be a really unlikeable character on purpose in a specific hammy way#like he's literally intended to be read as an interpersonally dislikeable and even interpersonally stunted kind of bookish wizard old fart#i think soto introduced him slightly weirdly bc i think. anet like#acted like we're supposed to consider him more morally grey than he actually is#but#JW SPOILERS IN PROCEEDING TAGS#i think its more obvious he's just plain not a good guy moving forward#now that their writing has found its bearings again#every other character is just like yeah this guy sucks..would be really funny if he was stuck in a torment nexus for awhile right#even the commander is like wow i feel the sudden urge to poke the bear with this guy for no reason#must be his generally dislikeable and negative aura#you could say he's morally grey ig because he technically does 'good' its just very transparent how much he sucks at it#anyways#do you think him and mabon knew each other carnally ?

#yuri wins again ☝️#Also the different musical symbols...#Mizi and Sua are both clefs- trebel and base iirc- whic are used w/ different instruments#correct me if im erong its been years since ive read music but treble usually has higher sounding instruments like violin and flute#while the bass clef is used for deeper/lower instruments like. a bass guitar. or cello#and Ivan and Till have a flat and sharp indicators#which tell you to play a note slightly lower or higher than the other#Two clefs can be played in the same piece ans sound good- most orchestras do this- and in fact its often vital to the piece to have both#but flat abd sharp notes usually sound bad together and dont mix (IF I RECALL CORRECTLY. ITS BEEN YEARS)#not to mention how clefs are intrinsic to the piece- like they dont change one part of it tbey determine the ENTIRE sound of the music#it tells you what instuments tou must use and if ifs low or high.
