so, with summer hanging around, I'm itching for things to do. since I really like editing and proofreading, I figured I would offer up my services to anyone who needs it!

I'll proofread anything at all, even for a fandom I'm not particularly involved in (though that would absolutely help, I'm willing to research stuff!). as for editing, I'll do it for a fandom I'm accustomed to (which is a lot, even if I don't post about them too much). I'm also happy to help proofread/edit anyone's original content, it doesn't have to be fandom stuff! I've got a lot more experience with that anyway which may come across in my own writing a bit idk.

I'd like to earn a little bit of cash eventually, with emphasis on the 'eventually', so that wouldn't be right off the bat (especially if it's a small thing!). I just genuinely really enjoy proofreading, I find it really satisfying, and I want to be a part of a writing community and help out where I can! as the proofreading-editing part is usually the not-so fun part ':D

So... I wanted to post more about myself so I'm doing that now!

Like I said before, my name's Leora but you can call me Leo as well! I use They/He/She pronouns but I'm really comfortable with any of them (Except It/its) I'm 29 years old and I'm honored to be able to work under Anya on the Tulpar.

I was my own nurse on a previous ship. Her name was the "Amalthea," the type-C freighter 820LU Class A but we all usually just called it 'Tia for short. I moved from there after... well. things changed for me. Anya needed an assistant and I was more than willing to work under someone! My position is a weird hybrid of being her assistant as well as an intern. I'm still learning a lot of things from her lol

There's 5 of us. Anya, myself, Swansea, the Captain, and Jimmy. This is also his first trip! Captain was kinda surprised that Pony Express let two new people aboard at the same time.

-The main Universe of this blog is canon adjacent! Very small things have changed. Mainly just. work arounds to be honest lmfao -The Tulpar is equipped with 6 cryostasis pods. 5 work, one is broken. The tech is too new for Swansea to confidently work on it. (Though he's certainly tried) -This blog is set 2 years before the canon events of the game. Daisuke isn't here right now but he will be later! -The "Amalthea" the type-C freighter 820LU Class A is based on The Last Unicorn! :) the 8 and 2 stem for the movie's release date of August 27th, and LU stands for last unicorn (I probably should've went with another Pegasus thing, or something else from Turkish mythology because that's what Tulpar is, but I thought it'd be cute if Pony Express ship names also had like. Unicorns and stuff lol.) -Amalthea carries WAY less cargo space than the Tulpar and is a smaller ship. It's mainly used to help other ships, space stations, ect. with supplies. (Think fuel, food + water, parts and any tools other ships may need) It's trips tend to be shorter, around 3-5 months depending, but they're no stranger to long hauls. -Leora's old crewmates are old ocs I have :) Obviously need to do a bit of redesigning lol but we have: Captain Arrosa, Co-pilot Ferrand,, Mechanics Umbra and Ami, Head Nurse Leora, and Nurse Assistant River! (who was promoted to head nurse when Leora left)

From now on, if I'm talking and not Leora, I'll be using square brackets! [This is an example and will also be true in the tags!]

let me compose myself I’m too excited rn, she would be the S W E E T E S T gf ever you’re turning me into a full fledged simp for her with this-

pro hero uravity who got all of her paperwork done for the day AND brought in some wannabe villains, even if it meant cutting her lunch break with pro-hero shoto a bit short. she tells her interns and sidekicks to call her if anything serious comes up, but since things seem to be going smoothly, she’d be going home an hour early.

she’s so excited to get home, regardless of whether or not you’d be there- both are good options to her because on one hand, you’d be there, ready and willing to cuddle on the couch. on the other hand, if you weren’t there, it’d give her an opportunity to cook something nice for the two of you- she’d been wanting to try this one recipe for a while now.

opening the door to her condo, she took note of your shoes being absent from the front hall. you weren’t back from work yet. 

she wishes she could take care of more things around the house on a regular basis, it wasn’t in her nature to sit idly by when things needed to be done, but with her hours being so unstable most of the time, it meant leaving it to you more often than not. so when she had time to do something nice for you, like cook dinner, she took full advantage of it.

she just wanted to take care of you, someone who has stood by her since pretty much the beginning of her hero career. you always did such an amazing job at caring for her after her shifts, all she wanted was to return the favour. she had always had the motivation to spoil you, but now she had the means as well. 

after changing out of her hero attire, she headed straight for the kitchen and got out the recipe on her phone. soon enough, she was fully absorbed in what she was doing. so much so that she didn’t even hear the door open 20 minutes later.

“well this is a nice surprise,” you snuck an arm around her waist and kissed her cheek, causing her to squeak and almost drop the pan she was holding.

“baby, you’re home! I’m sorry I didn’t realize sooner, did you call for me?”

you shook your head and smiled at her. “saw your shoes by the door and wanted to scare you.”

she huffed out a laugh. “you menace.”

giggling, you stole a slice of the pepper she had been cutting up. “you love me for it.”

uraraka gasped. “and a thief! I should take you in for that, you know.”

“hmm, you wouldn’t dare, I make things interesting for you.”

“yeah, yeah, just don’t steal any more ingredients please, I’d like to have enough left for our ultra-romantic, super tasty meal later.”

your eyes lit up as if you just remembered something. “oh yeah! what are we making anyway?” 

“we are not making anything, you always handle dinner, let me do it this time. and I’m following that recipe I told you about a couple weeks ago.”

she put the peppers in the pan and turned the heat on low before turning to face you again. giving you a once over, she frowned slightly at how worn you looked, even behind your faux-peppy mask. “how was your day, baby?”

you shrugged. “not the best, kind of rough but nothing I can’t deal with.”

uraraka made a disapproving sound but let it be. you weren’t in need of a lecture about how much you could deal with on your own, she could tell you just needed to be taken care of. 

she pushed herself up onto the counter and held her arms open. you gladly took her invitation and nuzzled into her chest. “how was your day, ochaco?” 

“it was good, thank you for asking. things were running smoothly today so I figured I’d come home early. I’m glad I did, I get to make you feel better now.”

she felt you smile into her skin. “I’m glad you had a good day, my love.” 

“I’m sorry yours was shitty. anything I can do to make it better?”

you hummed. “just having you here is already making it better... but if you’re offering...” you looked up at her and she immediately identified the look in your eyes as mischievous. 

“what is it, my love?”

“maybe while you’re cooking our ultra-romantic meal, I could run us an ultra-romantic bath to relax in after we eat?” you were playfully running your nose up and down her neck as you spoke and she squealed a bit at the tingly sensation. 

“I like that idea a lot,” she giggled. “go get changed into something comfy, I’ll let you know when dinner is almost done so you can start the bath.”

she took your face in her hands and peppered kisses to your squished cheeks before sending you on your way.

an hour later, stuffed with food and dishes done, you were both sat in the bath together, basking in each other’s company. times likes these, when you were cuddled up close and whispering sweet nothings to each other, always made her reminiscent of a time when you hadn’t even started dating yet. 

you were both fresh out of high school, her just starting pro-hero work and you starting your own life, but you clicked so easily, it would have been criminal to not give it a shot. 

it was cute for her friends to see at first, when you happened to see her off duty in a small café with some of her old classmates. you were both stumbling over words- over each other, as she tried to get out of your way to accommodate what direction you wanted to go in.

but they soon grew tired of her pining for a girl who so obviously reciprocated her feelings. so an intervention was held.

“uraraka, I can see that this girl likes you, too. you’re just scared of making a move. don’t be.” said shoto.

“yeah, ochaco, if todoroki of all people can see that y/n likes you, then you know it’s true. you need to make a move!” prompted mina. 

“what’s that supposed to mean, ashido?”

and she was so incredibly glad she did. 

months into the relationship, the shyness finally went away and you quickly realized neither of you had ever felt more at home with another person. that’s not to say you two never got flustered anymore though. any bit of flirting from one of you could render the other speechless and panicked to no end.

for example, how uraraka could feel how warm her cheeks were. it was better now that you were submerged in the water with her, your back leaning against her front, but she was still calming down from before that. 

and of course you just had to tease her. 

“pretty girl, what’s the matter? you’re all red from that? you know we’ve had-”

your girlfriend hid her face in the crook of your neck and secured her arms around your waist. she whined. “stooooppp!”

you laughed and carded a damp hand through her hair. “I’m very sorry, sweetheart, I’m just teasing. you know I love it when you get like this.”

yeah, she smiled slightly into your skin, a new determination to fluster you back arising. I know exactly what you mean.

she raised her head from it’s hiding place and relished in the look on your face when you turned your head to the side and saw a familiar expression. 

she maintained eye contact and brought a hand up to brush her knuckles against your cheek so gently, her other hand still on your wait, thumb caressing your skin. “it’s okay, but... with the day you’ve had, I wonder if you’ll let me... take care... of you for the rest of the night, my pretty girl?” a kiss was placed behind your ear and you squeaked.

uraraka let out a loud laugh as you took in a deep, but very shaky, breath and promptly face-planted into the water. 

she loved you so much and absolutely nothing could ever change that.

Since the Seawings name their palace’s separately… Deep Palace, Island Palace, Summer Palace? What would the names of other Pyrrhian palaces be called? Pantala too, they just have less stuff written since there’s only three of them. This is also a major lore dump for my fan project ( working title help ) so I am rambling about it because I’m hyperfixated on Wings of Fire and My Ocs so

These are gonna be pretty generic and I will also be proposing other palaces for the tribes ( some of these ideas may or may not be used in my wof fan project… plot twist this whole blog was me rambling about the books while also shooting my wof fan project ideas into the void and seeing if they stick and are well received /hj )

Seawings: Well canonically they have the Summer Palace, Island Palace and Deep Palace so no brainstorming needed there… is WHAT YOU THINK! If the Seawings were to have a fourth palace, I imagine they would have a “Pantala Palace” or something along those lines, if the Seawings encountered Pantala I feel like they could place a underwater palace closer to Pantala for easier trade.

Mudwings: I feel generally Mudwings would only feel the need to have one but if they were to name their palace I think it would be called the “Swamp Palace” or even the “Earth Palace” ( the second one was inspired by that one post about how they called the Mudwing Queen the Queen of Earth that was really cool I am so bad with usernames I am so sorry I forgot who made it :,)) )

Skywings: The main Skywing Palace is definitely called the Mountain Palace but since Skywing territory is so large I like to think that they have a second palace farther north called the Winter Palace which has a cold climate where many Icewing runaways have made a home in the surrounding town.

Sandwings: OKAY SO THE MAIN ONE IS THE DESERT PALACE OK OK AND THEN ON AN OASIS NEAR THE SANDWING CAPITAL IS THE OASIS PALACE THAT THE ROYAL FAMILY USES TO TRAVEL AND VACATION AND STUFF

Nightwings: Canonically Nightwings have no palace rn lmao but in my fan project they have multiple! On the old Nightwing Peninsula they have the Old Palace or sometimes called the Historic Palace, mainly Nightwing royal family members who are really damn old like to live and retire here, on the Nightwing Island to the south of Pyrrhia ( not the one with the volcano that one blew up and they gave the land to the Seawings to deal with ) they have the main palace or, as it is commonly referred to, the Moon Palace, named after it’s famous skylights it has, including the one in the royal hatchery which sits under the full moon! They also have a “Pantala Palace” but they like to call it the Palace of Knowledge because Nightwings are posh and act like stereotypical fancy British scholars and like they are better than everyone else.

Icewings: Icewings have the main Icewing palace, the Tundra Palace or sometimes referred to as the Animus Touched Palace by tourists, the second smaller palace in the south of the territory is called the Palace of Peace or the Peace Palace because it’s where the Icewing Queen has political meetings so her guests don’t freeze to death in the normal palace, ( to be fair though it’s more of a comfort thing, other tribes visit the Tundra of the Ice Kingdom they just have to bother with being checked in and given an animus touched earring. ( for context, one recent animus gift to the Icewings was the Gift of Peace which was an infinite supply of earrings that would make the wearer immune to the cold, basically tourists have to check in, right their names, time of stay, etc on a scroll and it’s annoying and outdated because they have to put the exact time of stay down to the second and if they pass the stay the Earring will disappear and if the dragon isn’t a Skywing who can slightly withstand the cold or a Icewing hybrid they’ll freeze to death lol )

Rainwings: Rainwings… they don’t have a palace? I mean they have a royal pavilion but nobody really goes there except the currently rotated in Queen who just tends to sleep there and yell at Dragonfruit whenever he’s being a damn annoying dragonfruit ( goddammit dragonfruit )

Silkwings: Silkwings really only have two palaces, main one is called the Painted Palace due to it’s famous murals depicting how the first Silkwing queen in centuries was crowned and how they and the Leafwings kicked the Hivewings asses and took half their territory and forced them to replant the forests ( and the Nightwings too they weren’t innocent in this ) the second palace is in the Silkwing territory in Pyrrhia, which they were granted so the continents wouldn’t go into all out war, the palace there is called the Moth palace, named after the variant of Silkwings who live there who more resemble moths than butterflies.

Leafwings: The Leafwings main Palace is the Sap Palace, although Sapwings and Poisonwings don’t hate eachother anymore and are one kingdom they still have different palaces, the Sap Palace has the Leafwing Queen, the Poison Palace has the Lady, since their territories are so far apart they borrowed the Lady title from Hivewings and made a Lady Poisonwing. And in their territory in Pyrrhia they have the Petal Palace, where the ��Petalwings” live. During the tree wars Petalwings were the name of the smaller neutral faction of the Leafwings so most Petalwings when the Leafwings all became one again decided to move to the Pyrrhia territory since Petalwings are kinda masters of growing flowers ( pov your a Petalwing who could help the Poisonwings restrain the Poison Jungle but you think flower pretty so you just grow flowers native to Pantala and sell them to people on Pyrrhia. Profit. Capitalism /j )

Crystalwings: The Crystal Palace is the Palace located in the tunnels of Pantala where the Crystalwings are native to. The Gem Palace on the other hand is the Palace underneath Pyrrhia. ( Crystalwings when they discover most mines in Pyrrhia are abandoned or in the Sky Kingdom so they island hop and build tunnels underneath the continent to spy on Pyrrhia and steal their shit like little gremlins: )

No no i get you tho. Its 100% ok to be soft its just that i sometimes have a hard time going about it. Maybe its because i am not necessarily soft. Is Any Advice Good Advice? Where and who to look for direction in online SW

First of all, long time no see. If you haven’t already heard, there are a few major changes that have happened in my own life personally which have affected this blog. Number one, I have retired from live stream webcamming. After six and a half years I made the decision to step back from streaming, for both personal and pragmatic reasons - and I have been really thriving ever since! I’ve moved from my original site (MFC) to OnlyFans, which has changed my daily routine for the better and improved my income while reducing the amount of hours I need to work. The tl’dr is that I’m loving it over there, and have PLENTY to say about how I’m finding success - over on the newly formed Camgirl Survival Guide OnlyFans page.

After years of offering insight and advice for free here on tumblr, I’m now opting to ask for support from those who are interested in what I have to say - so for $10 a month, you can access my new pieces that focus (for now) around OnlyFans, but will also continue to speak about live stream camming in the future occasionally as well, in the event that I feel I have something useful to say.

Why pay for advice when you could access stuff here for free, or simply learn things yourself? Excellent question: and it’s one I don’t necessarily have an easy answer for, to be honest. I personally went back and forth for a long while about putting any advice behind a paywall, because for one I truly believe in supporting other SWers and for the other ... I mean, who am I to tell you how to run your business? Time and time again on this blog I’ve insisted that my advice is formulated around my hustle, and that what works for me may not work for you - so putting a price tag on something that may not necessarily benefit an up and coming content creator or camgirl felt ... off. 

Then again, people sell stuff that might not help ALL people all the time. Gym routines, study guides, tutorials of any sort ... loads of other professionals sell advice. Self help is a booming industry, and writing self help requires zero qualifications. 

So how is this different when it comes to SW? To me, it boils down to the audience looking to consume it. Joining the industry is not always someone’s first choice - and if it IS a first choice, a lot of the time, newbies are not totally aware of the extent to which stigma and discrimination can truly harm them down the line. People are often in tough positions before choosing to join SW, whether they’re suffering from some sort of a disability, in danger of or experiencing poverty, or attempting to support themselves through school - and while SW can seem like a saving grace (which it is, for some), I worry that without proper disclaimers, entering the industry can do more harm than good. I wouldn’t want to lead someone into thinking listening to my *~*~10 Simple Tips to SW*~*~ would help them transform their lives instantly without any repercussion. 

That, and people are gullible and susceptible to influence. Lots of younger girls will look at a pretty, thin, white and financially successful camgirl and think “I wanna be her!” without really considering things. I mean, it’s just selling nudes, right? How hard can it be? How bad could things really get?

But I remember the headlines of SWers raped, murdered, beaten. I hear stories from friends about abuse, violence, death threats from strangers online; of having their nudes or p*rn sent to their families, their bosses, plastered all over websites that they’ll never be able to remove. I think of friends who are turned away from housing opportunities despite handsome income because the renters just “don’t think it’s a right fit” after finding out their involvement in the industry. I think of the camgirl moms I know who struggle to get visitation rights for their own children because of their line of work. I think of the woman who attempted suicide after her school ran her out of her nursing program after it was discovered she did porn.  I think of being run out of my own program after being outed. I think of the last year of my own life. 

I would love to believe that the majority of people offering advice are doing it out of a place of genuine desire to be helpful. I think there’s a big part of most of us that, upon finding success, wants to figure out how to raise others up with us. The Psychologists Fallacy is the belief that because I can do it, so too can anyone else - but this isn’t really the case, and when the drawbacks are as immense as they can be with SW, being naive as an advice giver can do more harm than good.

So who gets to give advice, then? The demand is there, so there will be supply. With how easy it is to make money off of referrals on OnlyFans (and with pressure being put on live streaming websites to implement similar features), it’s even easier for established creators to profit off of people who want to do what they do. I think the people who think twice about giving advice, or think long and hard before they publish advice let alone charge to access it, are probably the safest bet - but the people who are less experienced will probably do it first. If you’re looking for advice, I suggest seeking out credentials like time spent in the industry, variety of SW experiences, which skills that you think they could teach you in ways you couldn’t learn quickly or easily on your own, and/or whether or not they’re able to TEACH their experiences to others (because teaching and knowing are two completely different skillsets). Follower count or income matter less these days than meets the eye when we consider viral success stories - yet at the same time, I understand looking at the lure of luck and wanting to find a formula for your own instant rise to fame and fortune. Sadly, I’m here to tell you that I don’t think there is one, regardless of who might be selling their version of a How To.

I want to say to anyone seeking advice a simple, age old “do your research” -- but I also recognize that time is of the essence when many of us want to take the plunge. We need to make a paycheque right now and whatever comes our way first will likely be the only bit of direction or advice, if we get any at all, that we consume before diving in. I recognize that those who take their time, are able to discern which creators would likely give the best advice, pay for that advice and then have the time to study that advice and put it to use (paying for equipment, shooting and stockpiling content, so on and so forth) are likely considerably more privileged than the rest, which stands to further widen the gap between marginalized survival SWers at the bottom and those at the top. 

I guess, in reality, this message has tilted from one for advice consumers to one for advice producers. Think before you offer help. Remember that what helps you is not guaranteed to help others. Remember the immense amount of responsibility you have when you offer tangible, procedural steps to entering an industry that can forever irreversibly damage someone’s life. Remember that wanting to help is good, but that sometimes helping is worse than choosing not to.

As far as this blog goes, I imagine I’ll still update from time to time, but I will be focusing my efforts over on OnlyFans moving forward - until the CGS book is ready, that is. Stay tuned~

i know in one of my other posts i compared bellamy to zuko but as of rn he’s more of a jet (charming yet ruthless leader of a group of kids) especially back to whatever episode where he did a speech about privilege and wanting the upper class to do the work for once--> very reminisce of Jet and the freedom fighters. both bellamy and jet are very bitter towards those in power because they did wrong toward their family members. BUT also season 1 of avatar where jet is willing kill a village just to get rid of the fire nation is similar to bellamy wanting everyone to take off their wristbands despite clarke’s warning about how the need the aid of the ark to survive

1. Name one person (real or fictional) that you think you could 100% take on in a fight

Foaming mouth guy from Avatar. He’s got no stamina, barely any health, no skill. He’s unfocused and weak and my noodley nerd-ass could take him. (Though I am a little concerned he has rabies.)

2. What’s your favourite snack rn

Grilled cheese w veggies, mustard, and grilled tofu w a side of ketchup made by my roommate. It’s honestly the purest thing.

3. Which apocalypse do you think you’d do the best in? (i.e. Nuclear winter/ robot uprising/ Too many vampires, etc)

O man. I love apocalypse movies and I love survival horror (that one episode of the X Files where they’re trapped in a cabin, anybody?). I also genuinely love camping and I’m a bit of a medical hobbyist. I also watched an unreasonable amount of prepper videos on YouTube. That said, as mentioned above, I am a couch potato weekling. Furthermore, I don’t do well in conflict so if the world hierarchy collapses into a power vacuum where you have to Orange is the New Black-style intimidate ppl for supplies, I would melt and die quickly.

My best bet, it would seem, is an Arrival-esque alien apocalypse where the ones who have enough patience and sci fi knowledge to communicate w aliens are at the top of the food chain. And worst case scenario it’s better for my ego to die at the hands of an alien than a human.

Sci go apocalypses are just cleaner y'know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯


4. Best and worst fandom you’ve been in? Or have you somehow managed to avoid fandom completely?

Worst has to be Steven Universe. I regret not just moving on after I got bored. Ah well.

(I also think celebrity/real ppl fandoms are a dead end.)

My other fandoms all have various pros and cons and it’s hard to pick a favourite.

Adventure Time has great fanart, great meta and ppl have yet to descend into Homestuck-ian chaos. That said, they’re quiet af. People also fixate way too much on the fake fanfic AU Fionna and Cake. I have yet to read a really good Bonny/Marcy fic and that is a tragedy (a few have come close tho). Bottom line for AT tho is that it’s my go to wholesome cartoonist fandom. I like that it has depth but that it’s generally very simple and fun and that the fans are mostly shut in animation adults.

AtLA/LoK fandom’s biggest pro is that it’s huge and you literally never ran out of quality content. I’ve even made a few friends via this decade old franchise. It’s also enjoyably rich and complex. One of my favourite (now inactive) blogs was one that connected world building and little background Easter eggs to real Chinese history and culture. That wAs so cool!! I defs think as a Chinese person it allowed me to connect to non-western culture in a socially acceptable way.

The downsides tho are many: it can be overwhelmingly complicated (esp as someone who knows jack shit abt Chinese history), people take it too seriously, The Great Shipping Wars, it’s so big it’s a little lonely, the show itself has so many flaws upon greater inspection you wonder why you wasted your time on anything related to it, it’s an Asian themed story created by white dudes who make fun of their fans, the best parts of the show were written by other writers but those same white guys get k the credit. Also as w any fandom related to POC culture, racism happens. Anyways most of you know this already. IMO the best thing to have happened do the fandom is korrasami. Now it’s just abt Asian lesbians ruling the world.

(Though I also thoroughly enjoy the Family Rivalry part of the fandom. There are so mNy dysfunctional families to choose from!)

Rick and Morty is technically speaking my newest fandom. It’s got a lot of obvious cons (pickle Rick sexists, Szechuan sauce racists, asfhkkh incest) but one other con is just how pedantic and overly analytical people are abt the world building. I can’t breathe wo being corrected. RM has a misleadingly complicated high sci fi aesthetic that begets the kind of overanalysing my brand of overanalytical nerdiness can’t handle. Too many alternate universes. It’s just too complicated.

However one thing I like is that conversely I can overanalyse the writing and characters’ psychology/relationships (which I LOVE) and ppl take me very seriously. (At least they used to.) it’s kinda validating to have your 3k word essay on an old man’s bedroom and what that signifies for his depression get over 1k notes.

Rm also attracts the fun, super talented animation crowd so there’s boundless fanart and memes. I never knew I would like a gravity falls crossover retirement home AU btwn Rick and Stan so much but the art is objectively gorgeous?? So ??

I really dislike the lack of attention the female characters get from fandom bc they’re all really great? Female rep is limited but both canon and fic really do their 2-3 tokens justice. Also the jerry hatred is getting old (that male aggression… Like… Calm down, Jake) but it’s a refreshing departure drom when Megg from family guy was the butt of the joke.

Harry Potter, one of the pillars of nerd society, has both changed my life and irreconcilably annoyed me to death. (W no thanks to the racist creator herself!) One can’t underestimate how huge the hp fandom is which offers you as many reasons to love it as reasons not to. Harry Potter’s canon has complex world building that’s also charming enough not to take itself too seriously and much the same could b said of fanon. To a degree. Certain corners of the fanbase are fantastic shitposters and meme-ers and can draw you back in like a black hole. Casually enjoying Harry potter imo is where it’s at. The fanfic is probably one of the most impressively vast. Strangers at Drakesaugh, believe it or not, still updates and not only that, I still read it.

Not casually enjoying Harry potter is, um, yikes? HP and Hunger Games love to insert themselves appropriately in real life political traumas and honestly the dedication of the fandom can be overwhelming.

The HP fanart corner of deviantart circa 2010-12 and @flocc HP comics however are the best.

Meet the Robinsons, Ye Olde Fandom, still stands to this day. (Thanks in part to me ngl) As Iroh might say, they are a proud people. MTR is so bizarre and tiny it’s the only fandom I was able to read EVERY fic summary in existence (ones published on obscure sites excepted). The fandom has never ceased to surprise me for better or worse and mostly due to its age range. The original movie was intended for 8-12 yr olds and their (jaded) parents which means that now, ten years later, the fans are anywhere between 12 and 25. It has approximately 20 pieces of professional-grade fanart and fic and I am downright serious abt the quality and thoughtful complexity of this minority of fanart. Like I shit you not some of it’s almost too dark. However, tragically, one can’t talk abt obscure Disney fandoms wo also mentioning the incest ships (this is what happens when middleschoolers have to resort to cartoons to explore their sexuality in an anti sex ed world), the disorganised crossovers, and the blinding lack of imagination. Nonetheless, that a fandom of any kind could sprout from a 90 min cgi movie before the recession, based off an obscure but objectively fascinating children’s book, is still impressive. The fandoms smallness can in many wars work to everybody’s benefit: it’s a tightly knit community w little to no drama. And lots of memes (that I mostly make) to enjoy sincerely or ironically.

I’m also going to mention, very briefly, the Twin Peaks fandom, most of whom, even the die hards, are v casual when it comes to fan content (I need more fic damnit). Nonetheless it’s a decidedly cool art kid crowd for an art house show and I really enjoy befriending twin peaks watchers.

5. What’s one hot food that you prefer cold? (or, alternatively, one cold food you like hot)

Is it snobby to say I like food to be the temperature God intended?

Like I like cold pizza and salad-y pasta but I wouldn’t mind if everything were room temperature as long as the food itself was well made.

6. ya like jazz? What music do you enjoy listening to? Can you recommend any songs/ artists from that genre?

I think in some contexts I can like jazz. It’s very cosy and nostalgic, it can make you feel like a grand dame stepping out of your limo into your martini filled mansion as records pop around you and your fur carpeted living room. I also occasionally like jazz covers and alternate genres of jazz like electro swing etc.

Generally though I also think jazz is a little antiquated and a little all over the place. I lean more towards the ambiguous minimalism of mellow techno music like Jonna Lee, Grimes, Björk, early Lorde, Yasmine Hamdan, Austra, TRST, etc

I mean I don’t stick to just one genre (I imagine most ppl don’t). I like alternative (Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Joanna Newsom) and some musicians who seem to completely exist outside of genre like iMonster and the Gorillaz. Not to mention straight up pop like broods, Ellie goulding, lady gaga and Lana del rey. (I mean technically Ldr isn’t pop but u get the ideer)

7. What binge worthy show do you like?

So many man. There are so many out there! Twin peaks, Transparent, Love, Grace and Frankie, Adventure Time, House of Cards, Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, Mad Men, Girls, Broad City, Black Mirror, Avatar TLA, 6Teen, Chowder, Over the Garden Wall, Flapjack, the first season of Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, etc

The list goes on. I’m a TV fiend.

8. What’s an old meme that you miss and wish would be brought back?

Always liked the Gothic [x town or whatever] meme. It was like a text post version of the cursed images meme. Currently I’m really enjoying the song from another room meme and I hope even after it gets old it’ll make a comeback.

9. Tell me your aesthetic



O man. That’s a can of worms! Okay. Deep breath.

I like futurism, of all kinds. I like strong lines and clear shapes. I like colour blocking and minimalism and glass and holographic LED neons. I like white Japanese urban tiled buildings. I like aliens and ruins and cubes and white and colour blocking and black. I like technology and aliens and Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake. Rooms that are empty but for one light and one window and one plant. Love that.

I like the midcentury cubism and Mod and 30’s futurism. Clear and strong industrial shapes and curves and post modernist abstractionism.

I also love nature, I love most every Björk and Iamamiwhoami music video. I love the mountains and the forests and the desert and the winter tundra and most of all I love the water. A vast expanse of sky and sea w so many colours and textures. I love the 2000s and funny blob shapes and y2k’s obsession w secondary colours and shiny round things. Love pink. I am a grown adult who will never tire of pink. (Though I don’t really like when people overdo pink.) I love cursed image family photos taken with flash in a suburb. I love the grime and the sanitary aesthetic of suburbs and hospitals and brutalist office spaces. The fluorescent lights of the institution but with purple carpeting!

I love 70s mod and I love colorful 80s brutalism I like it when houses are shaped weirdly and they have carpets and polished curved wooden countertops and spacious nothingness where everything looks clean and cosy and bizarrely ugly and it all looks like an art gallery w too many plants.

I also really love maximalism and wood and detail and fur and velvet and embroidery and silk and windows and wood carvings.

I love 70s kitsch like John waters movies and Shrimps designer fake fur CDG17 where they just piled on knickknack after knickknack onto white dresses w food long trains. I’m a cartoonist who’s a nerd for design so I like when concepts are taken to the extreme in a humourously charming and clear-minded way. Whatever aesthetic someone chooses, they should go all out and really dedicate themselves to the highest form of that aesthetic. It has to be perfect without being sanitary of fake. It has to be alive yet beautiful, frozen in one perfect moment.

10. Favourite time of day and why?

Dusk. I think it’s a nostalgia thing. I loved the hours before bed time as well the hours before dinner when it was getting dark and the sun was reflecting freaky colours along the horizon while I ran around the grass. It’s cozy but it’s spacious and adventurous. So many things can happen at dusk!



11. You have the choice to live in any fictional universe - which one do you pick and why?

Harry Potter!!! You get the best of both worlds: magical, over-romanticised Victorian/medievalism, wish-fulfillment surrealism and wifi. It’s great. Likelihood of dying is so low, medicine is so advanced and even then ppls n°1 choice of lethal weapon (Avada Kedavra) is painless. Me and Luna could hang in her garden. I’d never have to pay for the subway again. I could live a nomadic life in a tent w infinite space. If you chose to live as a wizard amongst Muggles you’re basically god and you can cheat capitalism. Gravity is my bitch! And I’m not gna lie my dream house has always been a combination of The Burrow, the Lovegood house, and Shell Cottage.

If I was the kinda oddball economics green i mighta been in another life I would suggest you might be able to set up a purple-for-purple homeschooling group and argue the income as being purple either on the basis of it being like house spousing or like consultation (in that being your caste *is* the qualifying factor for a purple-for-purple homeschool)

Rn I'm living on kind of a toxic house for idk how much longer (trying to move out asap) but a lot of things make me anxious/angry/feel all kinds of negative emotions. Could this affect my magic? If so, what can I do to fix that? I can't go anywhere else to do magic and I have to be discreet, my parents are hardcore Christians. I don't want to stop doing witchcraft tho, I really enjoy it even if it doesn't work, it kinda helps me feel better.

It can if you think it will. I assume that’s already a worry in your mind, since you’re asking this question. It’s like how we say doubting your spells can actually help them fail - this is sort of in that vein of thought. If you think it matters, that it will have an impact on your impact, then it can.

A lot of people talk about not needing to be in a calm / positive state when it comes to your spellwork - it really comes down to your frame of mind. Some spells require those emotions to fuel them - mostly curses, but certain spells call for you bring up those things to bind or banish them as well.

So, at that point it’s a matter of letting yourself believe and know that it will not affect your magic, and trying to keep the doubt from your mind. And I know it’s easier said than done, but as long as you keep trying, keep pushing those thoughts, eventually one day it will just be that way (the whole “fake it ‘till you make it” mantra, right?). 

You can still research magic and call yourself a witch, even if you’re taking a break between castings. I mean, it’s been, like, months since I did a “proper” spell, with candles and crystals and herbs and stuff like that. But here I am, still a witch, just focusing on expanding my knowledge at this time. That can be an option if you are willing to wait until you leave the house to do magic, so the negativity won’t impact it. And it makes me feel better too, I feel you.

Otherwise, you have a couple of other options as well.

From there, [cleanse often] to keep any negativity out of your space, and from you. A discreet cleansing is open up a window and direct the airflow to come in, sweep up any negativity, and bring it back out again. The “light visualization” is also a wonderful way to cleanse a space with no tools. You can also [decontaminate people before they enter your space], an amazing idea brought forward by @stsathyre​.

Self cleansing is also great to help with any negativity you may have picked up in the meantime - you still have to interact with the rest of the house right? Shampoos and body washes can be enchanted simply to help you cleanse as well as clean in your shower. My favorite method of self cleansing is standing out in the rain as it falls - and it’s getting to be better weather (at least where I am), the ideal time for this! 

Discreet practicing comes down to a lot of [energy work], in my opinion - you don’t need any tools, really, just your own body and an understanding of working with energy. I do spells with my intent and tapping debit machines to make them load faster. I also draw down rain by willing it, and some subtle hand gestures.

[ruby will send you as good an account of how the fight went down as she can. It was her and a dude who works for the same company, but mostly at the hospital (who also helped her with this account of the fight), and they were jumped returning to their body transport vehicle. Two cops with extendable sticks. The other red was mostly able to keep out of it since they weren't really going for him, he was trying to get into his work bag for the closest thing he had to a weapon (a scalpel) but by the time he got it out it was over. The cops clearly didn't intend to kill her, just send a message - but at the same time, they can't have been overly concerned with *not* killing her, because they easily could have just by a blow landing a bit differently in a way they couldn't precisely control.

Ruby's only notable action was to try to crawl under the hearse in the hopes that they wouldn't be able to get to her, but since they were willing to lay hands on her they just dragged her out.]

Thanks, that was helpful for me, hopefully you won't be attacked again especially by the police but he are some possibly helpful thoughts. The hearse move was a good idea, even if it didn't work.  Playing dead might have been a good idea.  Also using your hands to protect your head while exposing tempting but less fatal targets as sacrifices.  Getting caned in the butt or similar hurts but you know enough anatomy to know you'd prefer it to your current state.  Lastly, its probably best for your coworker that he was forced to stay out of it, but if he had gotten involved using the bag as a shield and /or to entangle the cleansticks (thats the actual name I didn't come up with it) would probably have been a good strategy.  I'm not a cleanstick specialist, but knives are a bad match against them even when pre drawn, but they are *relatively* easy to screw up with tangle weapons and makeshift shields since they don't have a cutting edge or the weight of traditional staffs.

Almost forgot, I was assuming that the bag was heavy enough to hurt when swung but light enough that you can swing it pretty fast like 5-15 pounds.

Yeah, thats what I meant by it being best that your coworker stayed out of it.          I included my advice based on the best way to deal with actually fighting but really, like ok if I had been swapped with your coworker by magic AND been able to draw the scapble to dual wield AND you're not in Biyan then I probably could have won the fight.  But thats some rather big ifs and doesn't get into what would happen afterwards.

Biyan is just behind us here in Tapa when it comes to overall cleanstick fighting, and thats going by the performance of athletes and police department champions (as in representatives) in tournaments.  I didn't realize this until recently, but my research suggests that they spend a lot more time training their normal non-specialist cops in it than almost anyone else.

Yo girl listen. I, in no way, am any sort of matchmaker. In fact, it took me almost three years to tell my fiancé that I loved him more than just a friend. But girl, you really need to talk to your friend. There is nothing more degrading to oneself than for something like an unspoken emotion to slowly tear you down. You in no way should ever feel any less than who you are because of how someone treats you, or lack there of. You’ve probably received them in the mail. Those colorful flyers from companies that advertise a variety of preventative health screenings. I used to think they were scams and immediately tossed the flyers into the wastebasket.

Why Was I Sceptic?

Part of my scepticism came from hearing about a few health screening companies that promoted expensive exams that were completely unnecessary. Some of the tests even bordered on ridiculous.

In addition, there have been concerns that these exams sometimes turn up benign abnormalities. This means that the conditions aren’t exactly normal, but they don’t cause the person any harm. Oftentimes, this results in follow-up testing that’s invasive, expensive and not necessary.

What Changed My Mind?

Hearing this, you’ll probably be surprised to learn that I recently signed up for one of these exams, and I had it done last week. So, what changed my mind? This particular flyer offered what is called a vascular screening.

Several years ago, my mom died shortly after going through a surgical procedure known as carotid endarterectomy. It was a necessary procedure because one of the main blood vessels in her neck was becoming blocked.

The build-up of plaque (a fatty substance) in her artery interfered with the flow of blood to her brain, and this put her at a greatly increased risk of a stroke. The surgery was meant to clean out her carotid artery and restore adequate circulation. Unfortunately, Mom didn’t survive.

My Decision

As I approach my 60th birthday, I’m concerned I might follow in my mom’s footsteps and develop this condition, too. Besides the increased risk of stroke, it also places a person at higher risk for dementia.

Today I’ll share my experience with a vascular screening and perhaps help you decide if this or a similar screening is right for you.

I think it’s important to note that since these tests are considered preventative, health insurance typically won’t cover the exams. In my case, the charge for the screening was $75.

My screening experience consisted of the following steps:

Carotid Artery Ultrasound

A carotid artery ultrasound is the test that looks for blockages in the carotid arteries, the condition my mom experienced. A small probe was placed on the front of my neck over the two main arteries that supply my brain.

The resulting ultrasound took pictures of the insides of these arteries to reveal any blockages. I could hear a ‘swooshing’ sound as the test was being done. The technician put a gooey gel on my neck before the procedure, but otherwise, I didn’t feel any discomfort.

Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound

Similarly, the abdominal aortic ultrasound involved placing a small probe on my abdomen to look at my aorta, the main artery coming out of my heart. The ultrasound looks for enlargement or bulging of the aorta which could result in a rupture of the weakened blood vessel wall.

This type of aneurysm is sometimes hereditary, but it can also develop from a variety of other risk factors. While there is no history of this condition in my family, I was glad the test was included, as a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is often deadly. Again, there was no discomfort with this exam.

Ankle Brachial Index

The ankle brachial index test is a bit different than the others because it involves placing blood pressure cuffs on both arms and both legs. There was a bit of discomfort as the cuffs were inflated, but it wasn’t significant, and it only lasted a couple of minutes.

The purpose of this exam is to look for signs of peripheral vascular disease (PVD). This condition results from the build-up of fatty substances on the linings of the arteries.

Over time, PVD increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke. It also frequently causes pain and loss of mobility. My mom suffered from PVD (and I do mean suffered), so this is another condition that causes me concern.

The Good News?

I can happily announce that all of my test results were normal. So, was it worth it for me to pay out-of-pocket for these exams? Absolutely! I walked away with a huge sense of relief that what happened to my mom probably won’t happen to me.

That being said, it also made me more determined than ever to take steps to protect my health and prevent these conditions from developing in the future.

You see, the last time I had my cholesterol checked, it was elevated. That’s a risk factor for developing the build-up of plaque in my arteries. As a result, I’m now working on dietary and exercise strategies to get my cholesterol level back down to normal.

Does this mean that everyone in our age group needs to pursue these or similar exams? Not necessarily. These are a few factors to consider before making an appointment:

Consider your personal and family history. Choose the tests that are right for you as an individual.

Talk with your medical provider for professional input.

Research the diagnostic company you’re considering and check their reviews. Be sure they have a good reputation before you hand over your money.

Find out if your health insurance will cover any of these tests.

Jumping right in, say hello to your host, veteran type 1, diabetes author and community educator Wil Dubois:

Julie from Colorado, type 3, writes: I could kill our endo. He told my 14-year-old boy that he could eat anything he wanted to so long as he bolused for it. Now my son is eating M&Ms and his blood sugar is a wreck! When I try to call him on it he just tells me the endo says it's OK. What should I do?

Wil @Ask D'Mine answers:

Oh yeaaaaaaaaaah.........

What? Oh! Sorry! I drifted off into fantasy there for a moment. I was picturing your endo leaning against a stained and pot-marked wall, smoking his last cigarette, contemplating blindfold or no blindfold, while a squad of infuriated mothers load their rifles.

All right, so first to the medicine side of this equation. Technically speaking, the endo is right: you can eat anything if you bolus correctly for it. Yeah, and technically speaking, you can swim in bloody water with great white sharks without using a shark cage — if you do it correctly. But that doesn't make it a good idea.

Even when using advanced pump features, super-bolus techniques, a Symlin pen, and perfect timing to make a marching band proud—many adults have trouble bolusing for some kinds of foods. Our fastest insulin is not nearly fast enough for many of the foods in our environment. On top of that, type 1 teens are smaller ecosystems, which are harder to control than larger ones. And teens often lack the...ummmm... focus... needed to make complex boli work. And don't even get me get me started on the whole hormone thing.

So does technically correct advice make for good advice? Uh, no. I think most of us would agree that telling a teenage kid that they can do anything they want, "just so long as..." is a really bad idea.

I'm sure you wanted to tear that endo apart, and I applaud your restraint in not doing so. You could try "talking" to the endo, but I think you'd probably be wasting your breath. Endos don't get continuing education credits talking to moms (although it would be a good idea). My experience with docs is that the more specialized they are, the less open to outside advice they are. And changing endos wouldn't remove the hall pass your kid just got. Worse, even if your endo changed his tune, the kid will still stick with the original statement because it validates behavior he wants.

So, at this point, the die is cast. The train has left the station. The ship has sailed. You get the idea...

Now what?

The core problem here is that a Medical Authority—note capital letters—has given your son permission to do something against your rules/desires. And in the pediatric type 1 universe, Medical Authority can trump parental authority. After all, if mom and dad know it all, there's no reason to go to the doctor, now is there?

I think your only alternative here is to appeal to a higher authority than the endo: King Teststrip.

I propose you make a deal with your son: Fine. The endo is correct. You can eat anything, as long as you bolus. But the endo also gave you glucose targets you have to keep inside of. The latter rule trumps the former.

With apologies to sci-fi author Isaac Asimov, here are my Three Laws for employing this advice from the endo:

You must first keep your blood sugar in target.

You must take insulin when you eat.

You may eat anything you want, so long as you don't break rule number one and rule number two.

Say to your son: if you can stay under your high target, fine, you can eat it. If you can't keep your numbers in target, sorry, you can't eat it. Now, let's test those M&Ms.

Test-bolus-eat-test.

I'm guessing the M&Ms will have a hard time passing the test.

Robert from New York, type 2, writes: I'm 54 years old and my last A1C was in the high 8s. Lately I've been having some trouble in the bedroom. I'm wondering if my diabetes is the cause, and what I should do about it. Should I ask my doctor for the little blue pill? Will it work for me?

Wil @Ask D'Mine answers: I think you should ask your doctor if a prescription for five prostitutes is right for you. But seriously, now that I've offended half the readers with my off-color humor, erectile problems are common for middle-aged guys. They are also common for PWDs with elevated blood sugar. I won't bum out all of you guys with the statistical odds for middle-aged PWDs with high blood sugar, as it's much too nice a day out to go there. Let's just say your odds are long. On second thought, that's a really bad choice of words on my part. Moving on...

There are lots of causes of what we now like to call Erectile Dysfunction, or ED. Some are physiological—body stuff. Some are psychological—emotional stuff. But, yeah, I'd be willing to bet that your diabetes has a part to play in your bedroom problems.

The first thing you should do is get your damn blood sugar down where it belongs. High blood sugar can cause ED, and getting your diabetes in control might be all it takes to get you up and running again (if you know what I mean).

Also, beyond the bedroom, an A1C in the high 8s puts you on the doorstep of kidney damage, which will make your bedroom problems look pretty small by comparison. So a lot of good things will come from getting your blood sugar better controlled.

I think that should be your first step. If you continue to have trouble in the bedroom after your BG is in control, then one of the several prescription meds for ED is very, very likely to work for you. The clinical track record for these meds is excellent.

Not long ago I asked a patient if the Cialis that one of our docs had prescribed for him had done the trick. "Works great," he told me with an ear-to-ear grin.

"Too well!" spat his wife.

Ah....

It's at times like this that I actually don't know what to say.

And, of course, in keeping with the perverse nature of the heathcare universe, ED meds are usually better covered by insurance than diabetes meds and supplies. But that's a subject for another day...

One last note for the guys only: Don't be selfish bums. If you are having some ED issues, please remember that there are other ways to make your partner happy and satisfied until you are up and running again. Be creative about it. Be open about it. Be a man about it.

Still more? Alright...

So first the standard disclaimer. I have a medic alert tattoo myself. My mother, who hates tattoos, and my wife teamed up on this project because I'm on the sloppy side about wearing medic alert jewelry, and I'm on the road a lot. It gives them a measure of security knowing I have an alert that I can't accidentally leave behind.

Of course, tattoos aren't for everyone, but you'd be surprised how universal this kind of tattoo is becoming. I know a 70-year-old insulin-dependent type 2 who just got one. And she's not the kind of lady you'd expect to find in a tattoo parlor.

Not that there's anything wrong with hanging out in a tattoo parlor.

I'm just saying, you need to free your mind from tattoo stereotypes when we're talking about medical tattoos.

But I do have some tattoo rules: First and foremost is actually advice my mother gave me when I was 16: never get a tattoo that you can't cover up if you need to get a bank loan.

This is good advice. Not everyone loves tattoos. Sometimes you need to look more "mainstream" than you might actually be. Bank loans, testifying before Congress, or trying to talk your way out of a traffic ticket — in all of these cases, if you have a big blue tattoo on your forehead that says "F--- Diabetes" it's going to cause you trouble.

So if not on your forehead, where should an alert tattoo go? The consensus seems to be on the right wrist. The reason for this is most folks wear a watch on their left, so medics are more likely to check for a pulse on the right. Another option is on your neck above the carotid artery, but that can be harder to cover, depending on your wardrobe, when the summons to testify before the US Senate arrives.

Working in medicine, I do have a few health and safety tips for you. Plenty of people got hepatitis in the old days getting tattoos. This really isn't a problem anymore, but make sure the shop you choose uses a brand new needle just for you, make sure they autoclave their guns between customers, and ensure that they either use disposable ink "pots" or that the pots are autoclaved too. That'll keep the viruses at bay. (For many years the whole needle thing was being taken care of but people were still getting sick. It turns out the viruses were living in the ink pots, the little supply wells used to fill the needle with ink.)

The second medical consideration: no tattoos if your A1C is over 9.0, and to really be safe, it should probably be sub-8. If your blood sugar is high, you won't heal well, which opens up a whole range of risks from scarring on the bottom end to sepsis and amputation on the top end. 'Nuff said about that.

And speaking of tattoo parlors, pick someone talented. Tattoos are pretty much permanent, so you want a skilled artist putting it on you. Oh, and I'd avoid going to a tattoo parlor that has a huge banner saying "Grand Opening."

As to design, there is no one universal medical alert design. In general I'd look towards a design that either has the caduceus or the Rod of Hermes on it. These are the two designs most commonly used on medic alert jewelry. The caduceus is the "doctor's symbol," the winged staff with two snakes. Here in the US it has become pretty much the universal symbol for all things medical. The Rod of Hermes is a single staff with a single snake and no wings. It's more common in Europe, I'm told. But we use both here, and I think it just comes down to which appeals more to your eye.

Of course you can "tattoo it up a bit" to quote Orlando Sedillo, the guy who did mine. Just don't tattoo it up too much. If you get so fancy that the symbol can't be recognized, it does you no good when you are lying on the pavement drooling.

It should say, "diabetes," "diabetic," or "insulin" on it somewhere. You don't want to be mistaken for an epileptic.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Which pretty much covers everything but age. Yikes. I can see the comment storm on the horizon already. What about teenagers? Well....

So teenagers, in general, are the most reckless about wearing their medic alerts...

And teenagers, in general, are the most susceptible to blood sugar problems...

And teenagers, in general, are the most likely to undertaking other risky behavior...

And teenagers, in general, are the most likely not be to in responsible company...

But is it even legal for a teenager to get a tattoo? Generally, yes, it is, but of course state laws vary a great deal on this subject. Here in New Mexico, if you are 16 you can get one all by your lonesome, and you can get one at 14 if a parent or guardian is with you. I did a quick Google and was surprised to find most states are even more liberal, with generally no bottom age by law so long as a parent or parent equivalent is present. (Of course there are a handful of states that lock tattoo artists up for life if they even look sideways at anyone under the age of 18.) You can check out your state's tattoo laws hereif you like.

Law aside, how young is too young? Hmm, I really can't pick an age number. It depends on the kid, the family, the community.

I've got one 14-year-old T1 boy who comes to see me at the clinic who wants a tattoo. His parents asked me what I thought. As my conversations with the kid generally start out like this...

Where's your medic alert? I forgot it.

Where's your glucagon? In my nightstand.

Where're your spare pods? I left them at a friend's house.

Got any sugar on your body? Nope.

...I said that I thought it was probably a pretty good idea. That coupled with the fact that this kid really wants one. I think the family's made some sort of deal where the parents sign off on it and even pay for the tattoo so long as he gets his blood sugar low enough to make it safe.

So yes. I think you should get a medic alert tattoo.

Carmen from New Mexico, type 2, writes: My 81-year-old mother was recently hospitalized for several days for pneumonia. The hospital diabetes people basically tore up the diabetes treatment plan her primary care doctor and her educator have been using. The hospital gave her a complex sliding scale for insulin and said she has to attend carb-counting classes. She's a type 2 with an A1C of 8.2, takes Lantus, and has a host of other medical problems...?

Oh screw that! I am soooooooooo going to let my prejudices into the picture.

Hospitals have no right messing with established treatment plans. Hospitals don't know patients well enough, and you aren't under their care long enough for them to make those calls. Plus, if you are in the hospital at all, you're sick, so they aren't seeing you at your best.

The primary care team, on the other hand, has a relationship with their patients. They ostensibly know the character, personality, quirks, family, religion, culture, and economic realities of their patients. They get the "Big Picture."

Hospitals don't know any of that.

So, that's my general overview. But even if I didn't feel that way, I think they gave your mom bad advice. If your mom is 81, that tells me she was born in 1930. The life expectancy for a woman born in 1930 is supposedly to age 61.4. So she's already beat the odds by almost twenty years. Her A1C in the low 8's isn't great, but it's low enough to keep her kidneys safe. As she has a "host" of other medical issues, I'd put money on the fact that her diabetes isn't going to be her demise at this point.

My feeling is that we need to balance quality of life with quantity of life. You can live forever on tofu and cottage cheese alone on some mountain top, but why would you want to? To me, it sounds like her diabetes control is good enough for her age and health. I see no value in trying to make it perfect.

On Lantus she's taking either one or two shots per day. A sliding scale means multiple daily injections, more fingersticks, plus learning to count carbs is tedious and stressful — and completely unnecessary for her.

My take? Stick with the plan the primary doc and his educator came up with.

The hospital should butt out.
