So like something about Marius’s specific flavor of bisexuality is that he seems to like different things in men & women (which feels real to life, tbh!), and part of this is Doylist in the way that Anne Rice wrote about women/what types of women her male characters were attracted to, but in the spirit of meeting the text where it’s at I always tend to think of Marius as someone with just fucking out of control mommy issues who is attracted to strong bitchy confident women (pos).

When you look at Pandora and Bianca they’re both sort of sexually realized women who challenged him, and then you think about his relationship to his mom and his realTIONSHIP TO AKASHA — this is getting into headcanon territory but listen I just know he’s the kinda guy that wants a woman to step on his throat. The way he was a rebellious outsider as a mortal and his complicated social status maybe lends itself to the way he views men & women and his power in between them. It's sort of like an inverse of the power dynamic he might have had in Roman society, and again HEADCANON TERRITORY but it makes me wonder how much of his sexual preference was influenced by taboos in his society and what did his privilege lend to him, vs what ways he might have felt inferior or emasculated.

It seems like he likes women who challenge him and men who will look up to him, right?? How much of it is because of his mommy issues, how much of it is being the spirit of his age and his Ancient Roman sexual hangover, how much is it that he got murdered by a cute guy that took advantage of his barbarian fetish? He is in LOVE with women who are either unavailable or who can cut him down to size. But yeah like, Armand really IS the opposite! Armand was going to be his student in all things, not just his education but even encouraging him to be promiscuous and sexually realized, as well! It doesn’t ignite him the way Pandora and Bianca do. He doesn’t spend CENTURIES obsessing over him and searching for him the way he did for Pandora, he also doesn’t spend TWO THOUSAND YEARS worshipping him the way he does the mother he didn’t have as a mortal. His need for Armand exists in a very specific space and he’s not super interested or capable of of fixing the mess.

The gendered division of labor is present in every known society and every point in history, which is because it is the product of millions of years of evolution, rather than a fictional "patriarchy". If you're asking why men are attracted to and place value in young females, I guess it's because the younger a bride is, the more fertile she will be and the more healthy children she will be able to give him during her life. But you'd really need to speak to people who live in the cultures that practice that to get an answer.

Different bad things happen to women and men. But more bad things happen to men. Explain why men are the overwhelming majority of casualties in war. Explain why men are 93% of all work fatalities. Explain why 80% of the homeless are men. Explain why 80% of suicides are men. And so forth. And so on.

My understanding is that in certain poor parts of the world, having a son is favored over having a daughter, because the son is traditionally more likely in those cultures to be able to make a good amount of money to support the parents when they get old. But it seems to me that nature itself will eventually balance that out, because after a few generations, it becomes very hard for those sons to find any women to marry, and so women become more valued, at least by the sons.

But as I said before: different bad things happen to girls and to boys, but it's the worse option that generally happens to the boys. When Boko Haram kidnapped hundreds of Nigerian girls a few years back, there was global outrage and everyone from Michelle Obama to the cringiest Hollywood actor was photographing themselves with signs demanding their release:

But none of them said anything about what Boko Haram did to the hundreds of boys they encountered, which was to burn them alive.

Of course, murder is worse than kidnapping, but we all care about girls more than boys, and we all prioritize that over justice and equality and human rights and all the other feelgood buzzwords we like so much.

Because of their ability to bear children, females everywhere in the world are seen as having innate value simply for existing, in a way that males are not. Males have to achieve something to be seen as worthy of interest and care. Because of this, everywhere in the world, males are treated much more harshly and brutally in every part of life than females, but you are unable to see and feel anything about that, even when it's unfolding right in front of your face, and that is for two reasons: firstly, evolution made you, along with everyone else, care more for women than men. And then secondly, feminism came along to amplify, politicize and weaponize that innate indifference to males, making you not only callous but openly, gleefully hateful. This is the biggest and most fundamental problem here that you most urgently need to examine and try address in your life if you want to do any good in the world.

Making female characters who're supposed to be 'queen bees' and/or popular comes with a great amount of misogyny and internalised competition amongst women.

• The Mary sue.

She's perfect, she's everything. While partying everyday and not studying once in the entire book, she's able to be both the magnet and the nerd who knows everything being taught in the class. All men turn to look at her, all women are envious of her beauty.

Most of such characters are described as having certain particular beauty standards. Beauty is different for different people,and attraction isn't warranted by looks. There's a stark difference between being easy on the eye and attractive.

Such characters are also shown to be either incredibly revealing in clothing in places where they shouldn't be, and are described using adjectives that make you more uncomfortable than enamoured. Most of the time they're said to be 'inspired off IT GIRLS', when being an IT girl says nothing about bringing other women down by saying how they surpass everyone around them.

• The Edgy Bombshell.

One woman can't be both popular and nice, for that's a sin. Kindness doesn't warrant popularity, for women are always fighting amongst each other in their mind.

Popularity is gained because of a lot of things, and most of them aren't positive things. The only time people end up liking you is if you're aware of other people: and don't put other people down to raise others. Women are much more than their bodies, their beauty, their sexuality. They can have off days, they can have many different kinds of personalities and moods depending on the situation.

And it’s just such a bizarre statement: even if we were talking about a drama that was aimed at teenagers, in what ways is it “groomer” for an adult to watch this show (lol, on the website that is full of adults freaking out over kids’ shows) or for that adult to find the adult characters played by adult actors attractive enough to write sexy fanfic about them? It’s just really obviously reaching for an excuse to call a gay man a groomer.

In general, I feel like this website has a serious problem (it’s been the case at the very least since the panic over CMBYN, and before anyone gets pissy, I’m not talking about anyone taking issue with the content of the film itself, but the people making weird insinuations about gay/bi men for liking it or “the gay community” for embracing it or over the bi male novel author’s own sexuality or reasons for writing it, etc.) where a lot of people who are not gay/bi men think it’s okay for them to make weird homophobic assertions about it, and generally not bother to question their homophobic beliefs about gay and bi men, because they themselves are some other kind of LGBTQ+. I’m a cis lesbian and a lot of this particular seems to come from cis lesbians and bi women, often trying to couch it in a general sort of skepticism that women as a marginalized group might have toward men as a privileged group, but then it only ever seems to be directed at men who are also marginalized such as gay/bi men (and also MOC) and specifically for things that are a result of those marginalized identities and that don’t affect women — NOT a situation where a man is using his marginalized identity as an excuse for misogyny or anything like that. Anyway, people need to knock that shit off. Not every person in the LGBTQ+ community has the same experience, and being, say, a cis woman who is queer doesn’t necessarily make you any better of an authority on gay or bi men’s lives than cishet people if you aren’t making an effort to talk to them or read stuff by them or learn about their lives, and certainly doesn’t mean you can’t be homophobic toward them — just like how in turn, queer men can be bigoted toward lesbians and/or bi women. I don’t understand how people can be aware of other kinds of intra-LGBTQ+ bigotry — cis gay or bi people being transphobic, gay people being biphobic, etc. — and not be aware that this is also a thing that can happen from other LGBTQ+ people toward gay men.

And being ANY kind of queer absolutely does not give you a get out of jail free card for buying into and disseminating the moral panics about groomers, “kink at pride,” “drag is problematic and always sexual” etc. which are used by the right wing to hurt all of us. While I won’t deny that there is some misogyny in Hori giving Mirko and his other female characters costumes that expose more skin (mainly for fan service) whereas male characters get costumes made from their dna so they don’t have to be half naked, people hating on Mirko BECAUSE of her costume is so laughable since her leotard is meant to look like the one-piece bodysuits wrestlers wear and her hero alias was even inspired by a real life wrestler

At most, the female characters do expose skin.

But the male characters also service fanservice, if not more. It's just that people are so use to male characters going shirtless during fights, I feel like it just flies over their head that some of those moments are fanservice.

Need a whole board to count the amount of time Midoriya and other male characters went shirtless. That one shot of Todoroki after he almost killed Midoriya after their match? Yeah, the way it's shot, even in the anime, that's fanservice. The costumes are tight, and there are scenes to showcase how tight to give emphasis on the muscles. Crust's costume exposes his abs and thighs and Vlad King's got a whole cleavage window.

That AFO scene when he regenerates his body and he's all buff and nude? That was fanservice.

That scene when Mr. Compress shows his face? Fanservice. Shigaraki and Dabi have became walking moments of fanservices.

What reason does Shigaraki actually need to be shirtless?? After season 5, he can't keep a shirt on. Dabi? "It's to show his scars." Oh, that, too! But it's obvious the team caught on that he has fans that want to lick him. Hence, his recent costume change.

If people gotta talk about the fanservice over Miruko, then bring the same energy for the male characters and the female characters more. That's what bothers me.

Miruko is designed to reference an actual kickboxer. Mirko Cro Cop is a real person (even referenced in the first chapter of JJK which tickles me because it was for Itadori, who is my other favorite. Yeah, Horikoshi and Gege read other's stories and are friends). If the wrestling gimmick wasn't clear enough, her backstory has her wear a mask like a wrestler does and she fights others... in a wrestling ring!! She fights like a wrestler!

So her costume actually makes a lot of sense! Both in the case of her fighting style and aesthetic.

Yes, some of the designs for the female characters could be a little better, but it's the amount of energy people want to bring to voicing their hatred about Miruko's actual pretty tame costume to everyone else. She ain't the only damn body in the story serving fanservice, so stop acting like she is.

And considering that Miruko is also a grown woman is always what make me even more confused.

In the case of Yaomomo and Hagakure, it makes sense people would be uncomfortable. They are still teenagers, just 16. I'm sure we all are tired of the teen girls being half nude for fanservice trope.

Hello, this ask is probably going to be rather heavy, so it's fine if you don't want to respond to it.

So my situation is that for several years (from 13 to 17) I considered myself to be a man trapped in a woman's body and wanted to transition to become "my true self". However, since then I became gender critical and stopped pursuing transition because it would not fix my internal issues and above all it would not actually ever make me male. So transitioning became pointless to me.

Now as an adult however, I've recently started feeling my desire to transition creeping back on me, although this time it was because of how apparent it became to me how misogyny all around the world is seen as a non-issue. Every day I hear of women dying, being sexually assaulted, forcefully impregnated and in general being disrespected by everyone. All of this became too much for me to handle so that's why my desire for transition came back. (Not to mention that I'm the only GNC woman in my social circles, so there is also the added alienation from other women.)

I think my question is: is it really that bad to transition in order to avoid or at least lessen the amount of misogyny i face every day? I know that by doing so I would be throwing other women under the bus, but I'm not mentally strong enough to challenge the oppression women face. I know that transitioning would make me miserable in many ways and probably physically sick as well (with all the hormonal side effects), but at least it would mean that men would harass me less. I'd rather be safe than happy.

I just need to vent for a second.

More and more I'm thankful for the blogs who are not afraid to call out something problematic that Jensen Ackles says or does. I'm not looking to pile on the guy. We're all human, but when someone says something that isn't right, as a society we tend to call it out for what it is: racism, sexism, homophobia, or just plain wrong. That church abuse joke, the Brendan Fraser Whale comment, the misogynistic and homophobic comments he's made in the past are all wrong.

Can someone grow and learn to be a better human? Sure. We all do that every single day as time passes. I like to think that Jensen has grown quite a bit in some areas and has learned. But those two recent "jokes" were not okay. One is incredibly fatphobic and fat-shaming while the other is literally disregarding the hundreds of victims who suffered sexual abuse in the Catholic church over decades. Do I think that he stood there both times and thought of the bigger picture? No. I think he just said what came to mind because they're both funny to him so they should be funny to his AA's. But I think what flabbergasts me is that they were! There are still AA's traversing this site and other social media that are defending them, particularly the church joke. Saying that if we call it out for the problematic statement that it was, if we don't immediately laugh, then we're not true fans of Jensen, we don't understand his humor, there's something wrong with us, we're just looking to hate on him, and all that crap. And it's like, no, there is something wrong with YOU if you find that funny and then would even defend that. Why is it that common sense continues to elude AA's when it comes to the topic of Jensen? Is he an attractive guy? Yes. Does he seem like the perfectly wrapped package for some? Sure. Are some of these same people obsessed with him? Yep. But that shouldn't completely eradicate common sense and empathy (I'm being kind here). I just don't get it. And these last two instances have left me even more disappointed but sad to say, I'm not surprised. Shocked, yes, but not surprised. Born to parents like other humans, grew up and went to school like other kids, started a career like other people after school ended, got married like other people do, had kids like other people do, and on and on and on. He literally gets up every day and puts on his pants the same way as many other people on the planet do every single day. He's not this messiah-like figure for crying out loud who is above everyone else. So why do they act like he is? Why can't they see the forest for the trees? You can be a fan of his and still have common sense and live on planet Earth.

His stanbase really needs a fucking reality check. Had Jared said that, he'd be in deep shit. Had Misha or Danneel said that (and I am no fan of theirs), they'd be in trouble. Dissecting some examples of rhetoric that tries to force trans people into privileged/oppressed dichotomies (CW transphobia, transmisandry, misogyny, biphobia, aphobia, exorsexism)

NOTE: This list is not comprehensive. The point isn't to cover every possible piece of bullshit rhetoric, but to educate people on the common problems and logical errors that characterize these kinds of claim. As such, this is mostly going to cover shit that harms transmascs, because that's the material that I know the best. This is not a claim that this bullshit only goes one way. It can happen, has happened, with ANY group cast as the oppressor.

"Trans women are publicly shamed and bullied for being trans. Trans men are 'just' invisible, so they're privileged because they don't have to deal with that!"

"Transphobes want transfem people dead. But they just want transmascs to detransition, so transmascs have it better."

Both of these are examples of oppression Olympics - claiming that one group is really privileged because their oppression doesn't look as bad. It's also misleading as hell, because it never explores what the actual consequences are of what's being done to AFABS/trans men - for example, that invisibility exacerbates the difficulty of finding transmasc-inclusive resources, or that the reason many transphobes want us detransitioned is so that we will be "sexually available" to them (I.E. they want us as sex objects and breeding stock, which is not all that better than death).

"AMABs are hated no matter what they do, because they're either seen as perverts or Evil Men. AFABs can avoid being seen as either simply by detransitioning, convincing society at large that they are harmless, vulnerable women."

And here's yet another example of the claim that being forced to detransition isn't "that bad", as if gender dysphoria and the pain of being in the closet are magically washed away by the healing powers of society's overwhelming love and support for women. And the assumption that that exists is a problem in itself, because misogyny? Racism? Islamophobia, fatphobia, literally everything that causes people to clutch their pearls and treat others like absolute shit? Apparently none of that matters at all, literally any (supposed) cis woman can say "jump" and society will start tripping over themselves to do so.

You get it. This logic has been re-used and regurgitated so many times that it's mostly bare wires and bits of vomit. And yet people are still using at least half of the versions I just mentioned, plus more that I didn't have energy to cover. And all of it stems from the same, laughably conceited premise: that the mainstream model of gender and sexuality is so close to perfect that your understanding is all it needs to finish the puzzle.

Despite her coldness, Yui is always nice to her. This makes Hikari angry, since she thinks Yui is being fake too.

It secretly angers her how genuinely kind Yui is, she’s jealous at how she genuinely has a good heart despite being surrounded by pain.

She envies how “pure” Yui still is even though she has suffered a lot, she hates that she couldn’t stay like that.

Eventually, after Hikari realizes Karlheinz’s real motives and starts acting for herself, she apologizes to Yui and asks if they can be friends, and they become really close !

You paced back and forth in the common room waiting to hear that Kit was taken back to his cell. He was in the process of being punished, and you knew in your heart that it was going to be a really, really harsh one. Your heart was beating what felt like 500 beats every single moment that passed and your head was racing with the the event that lead you to where you were.

You were so hungry. Being a patient that wasn’t much liked, it could be hard to get meals and snacks. And, as unfortunate as it is to say, you were a female and many guards and other male inmates used that against you either denying your food until you gave them what they wanted, or simply taking it and threatening to literally kill you. You learned your place, as so there you were earlier in the day, sneaking around carefully in the kitchen looking for anything you could shove in your mouth and fill the awful ache in your stomach. You hid behind shelves and counters whenever someone would pass and made your way around the large area, eventually being caught by Kit who was already in the process of stealing food. He had a half load of bread in his hands and some dried pasta that was in a jar. You both continued together searching for and getting your hands on as much food as you could. Just as you were both ready to sneak back out, you had been grabbed and thrown to the ground by a guard, your food spilling from your hands to the floor with you. The guard was one who you knew well as he was most often the one to deny and deprive you of your food all because he wanted favors that you always refused to give him. He often grabbed at you by your hips and bottom, even had the audacity to grope your breath before. You knew he was attracted to you and because he had the upper hand in all situations, there wasn’t anything more you could do but push him away and move in with your day. And so he took no hesitation in having caught you stealing — he kicked you, grabbed your face and slammed you back down, anything he could to torture you as if it was arousing him. He hasn’t even touched Kit and you had hoped Kit would take the chance to get away with the food without being caught while you took the beating. But instead, Kit grabbed the man and nearly threw him across the room, going to him and beating him to a pulp. You puke barely move from the pain, and when other guard and a few sisters, including Sister Jude, entered the room, tearing Kit from the man and taking him away — you were in no position to take a punishment. Sister Jude determined you earned yours from the beating and let you go back to the common room while Kit was taken back to her office.

He was only defending you. Stealing food from the kitchen always resulted in punishment if you were to be caught, but never nothing any of you couldn’t take. But you knew from the guards injuries due to Kits rage, he was really in for it. It was your fault, and he was going to be beat for it while you got away with some bruised ribs and a sore head.

You ran your shaky hands through your hair, closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths to calm yourself. But they shout open quickly when you heard Judes voice as she entered the common room. You didn’t move from where you stood and instead listened the best you could to what she was saying to another sister. All you could really make out from across the room was Kit’s name and “infirmary”. It was all you needed to hear and with it, you sneaked out without anyone noticing.

You made your way down the halls, passing a few people who didn’t bat any eye at you. More than likely that had heard of your beating form the male guard and most others, females that is, had enough sympathy for you to leave you be after and so, it was easy sneaking in to see Kit. You opened the door quietly and slowly, leaning in to take a peak in case there were a nurse or anyone who would turn you in and to your own luck, it was empty all but Kits body laying still on the small bed. You felt the breaking of your heart when you walked closer and could visibly see the damages done. The guard didn’t even get a hit in, so he didn’t do this to Kit. This was his punishment, but what? What did they do for him to look like this?

You quietly sat at the chair that was beside the bed, blinking a few times nearly dumbstruck at what to say or do. You were so shocked. You felt so guilty. And so, you took his hand in yours and gave it a gentle squeeze.

“Kit? Can you hear me?” He only stirred a bit, visibly in pain as his face scrunched up and his muscles tightened when he moved. He didn’t open his eyes however and you took a deep breath and let your fingers softly graze the swollen and blackened skin beneath his eye. “What did they do to you?” You whispered to yourself, “I’m so sorry.”

“What’re ya apologizing for?” You’re eyebrows raised as Kit spoke, looking down at him now at another loss for words. Soon, his eyes fluttered open, as much as they could anyways. He looked up at you and attempted to grin reassuringly.

“This happened to you because of me.” You frowned, shaking your head.

“Because I beat that fucka that was beatin on a lady? That was my choice, y/n. You didn’t force me to. So no,” he tried to adjust himself, moaning in pain at the movement while you squeezed his hand feeling helpless. “So no, this didn’t happen because of you.” He continued once comfortable. His voice cracked a bit.

“Have they given you medicine?” He nodded.

“Not enough,” he chuckled, “but don’t worry about me suga, I’m tough.” He grinned again and you sighed wishing there was something you could do.

“What did they do to you? Surely Sister Jude herself couldn’t have done this?” You stated, glaring at his arm that was wrapped up wondering what brutal cold hearted person could do something like this as a punishment.

“Wasn’t Jude.” He shook his head, you meeting his eyes again while you listened. “But don’t worry your pretty lil head. You don’t needa know, okay? I don’t want ya dwelling on it.” You frowned deeper, if it was possible. What could he possibly mean? But as if he knew what you were going to ask, he continued. “It really wasn’t as bad as it seems. Gimme a day and I’ll be good as new.”

“Kit..” you started but he only shook his head and so, to respect his wishes, you dropped it. “I don’t want you doing anything like that for me again. That guard is a puke who does things like that to me all the time. He’s just mad because I won’t give him any of myself. So im used to it. I can take it. What I can’t take is seeing you like this.” Your words caused Kit to raise his head and give you a concerned look, having no idea the man was brutal to you and simply because you wouldn’t sleep with him. It pissed Kit off and you could tell. “Please Kit. I won’t ask questions if you don’t.” You nearly whispered out. He only looked at you for a moment, letting your plea play in his mind. He really didn’t want to tell you what they did to him in that place, but he couldn’t shake your words about a guard harassing you and abusing you because you won’t give yourself to him. He was so enraged, but he was so helpless right now. So, he relaxed and allowed himself to lay back into the pillow.

You nodded, squeezing his hand again and this time him squeezing yours in return. “Let me take care of myself, okay? Don’t need you sending up here every time you come to my rescue.” You smiled and he quickly returned it and took a deep breath.

“I dunno if I can agree to that. No man should put his hands on a woman, specially for something like that. Don’t think I can sit there and watch ya and not do something about it.” He stated honestly which only causes you to sigh. You understood him. You couldn’t imagine seeing him get beat in front of you, why would he sit around and do nothing while you were beat in front of him? It was unfair to expect such a thing.

“You’re right. Fair. But if, and that’s a hard if, if you happen to see it again, at least pull him off and just come to me? Maybe it’ll save.. this,” you motioned to his current position, “from happening again. Can we agree on that?”

He smiled and took another deep breath in and finally nodded in agreement. “Deal.”

'director's commentary' on any sex scene you've written that you consider particularly fraught/controversial?

You did not come to play tonight, my friend, and for that I thank you.

This is tough though because I write enough overtly terrible stuff — everything I write that’s more gnarly than like, gentle marital lovemaking is pretty dire — but what can be controversial in fandom is a wide net, so I’m going to go with most fraught/most upsetting for me, personally.

So: DVD commentary for “somebody’s sins but not mine” (Stranger Things, Billy Hargrove/Max Mayfield noncon) .

Content warning on the rest of this post for discussion of sexual assault/sexual abuse/sibling incest, underage (older teen/very young teen), physical abuse, misogyny. The fic is explicit (heed the warnings, seriously) but the discussion here is more general.

Obvious things up top — the title comes from the Patti Smith version of “Gloria”, ‘Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine’. There’s legitimate line by line commentary on the song that digs into Smith’s thoughts and intentions with the lyric, which you can find here.

So much of Max’s s4 plotline is about shame, guilt, and being the opposite of free — grieving someone who hurt her very badly. She has so much to unpack by then.

The big throughline that jumps out at me here is all the very gendered bullying and verbal cruelty Billy uses toward Max — he uses the ancient abuser rhetoric of “teaching” her sexually, but he also frames it as teaching her to be a woman, to be sexually accessible and under his power. He really wants to break her down from any possible angle, and that makes this especially raw. From Billy’s side of things he’s very violently putting his attraction to her into terms he can understand, turning what should be a very fleeting confused thought in a confusing situation into something infinitely worse, but he’s also exorcising his anger at her independence and his own sense of powerlessness. Billy’s also young here, though certainly beyond old enough to be responsible for himself and to have there be a serious dynamic of power — to characters the Party’s age, he might as well be a full grown adult, but relative to actual adults he’s a shitty kid. I wanted to show how his aggressive embrace of a harsh and toxic model of 1980s masculinity is an overreaction to cover up his own experiences of abuse, being derided as weak and feminized, and to reframe the confusing experience of being desirable and desired even to adults in terms of his power over women. It’s not coincidental to me imo that his Big Moment of armor-piercing, monster-defeating humanity is in the context of his relationship with his mom and who he could have been if he’d escaped that trap of violent machismo/who he might be able to claw his way back to being again if he wasn’t getting fatally possessed by a Mind Flayer.

Billy’s a hot villain but I can’t get into fanworks that elide his bigotry and scariness. He’s pitiful but he’s also really fucking scary in a way that supernatural/otherworldly baddies can’t be to me.

Max’s confusion and resistance to being forced into this role of sexualized object is complicated by her own age-appropriate attraction to girls and similarly pretty normal interest around sex — those recollections and feelings are getting muddled together here and it was important to me to have that layer present. I love bi Max and her relationship to Eleven is so sweet and liberatory, so it’s important to me that her joyful presentation of “girly” stuff like fashion is so focused on self expression and being your own boss, which Eleven desperately needs both as a former institutional prisoner and a kid chafing to grow up under a pretty controlling father figure. (I really hated the whole “Hopper freaks out about Eleven doing teen stuff” plotline, and in addition to that her whole “escaped government captive” thing means that even his absolute best parenting has to be pretty restricted by circumstances.)

I had to do a bunch of reading about the interior of Billy’s stupid car — big ups to all the car nerds who have meticulously documented every car ever depicted on film — for another much more fun explicit fic and revisiting that for this one was a real “what the hell am I doing… I could be writing this same character getting railed on the hood of his Camaro by a consenting douchebag adult instead of viciously furthering the cycle of male violence by abusing his kid sister…”

I write a lot of villain/heroine dynamics but I don’t write a lot of sibling incest pairings and the sibling factor here makes everything sooooo much worse.

This fic is a fucking bummer! That’s my final word. Out of all the grim shit I’ve written this might be the grimmest.

gay xander and what could have been

allegedly, whedon had planed from the very beginning to eventually have one of the scoobies come out as gay, they just hadn't decided right up until the writing of season four whether it would be xander or willow. So what happened is we ended up with three seasons of gay subtext popping up around both of them. and obviously, with willow, we get the follow through. But with xander, all of those little moments and hints just...fizzle out.* It adds such a frustrating element to his characterization. I can't help but wonder what kind of character he would have ended up being if they had decided to make him the gay one rather than willow.**

the main issues with xander that a lot of fans have pointed out over the years and which now dominates the narrative around his character analysis is a) jealousy over any man who receives attention from buffy and/or willow b) entitlement to the bodies and sex lives of the women around him c) continually unchecked slut shaming of women, both his friends and love interests and of course d) the show not only excusing all of this but actively framing him as being right

so if they had landed on making him gay...how would that have effected the way they wrote him? Gay men can absolutely be misogynistic, but the particular flavour of xander's misogyny is so fuelled by his sexual attraction to, resentment of, and entitlement towards the sex lives of the women around him.

The first three seasons as they are would still be the same, and there is a lot of xander being utterly unbearable while the show insists his behavouir is perfectly acceptable and understandable and even noble at times. from The Pack to Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, to just his entire attitude towards angel and later angelus and even later towards buffy in relation to angelus...oof.

i wonder then, if there would have been a shift from young, insecure and closeted xander who covets women as objects, into a self actualized out xander who realizes the way he treated willow, buffy, cordelia, anya ect. was the result of his own sexual repression and desperate need to be validated as a Successful Heterosexual Man.

I mean. we almost certainly wouldn't have. I guess it depends on whether of not whedon continued to identify with xander and use him as a self insert/mouthpiece even after the character was made gay, and if xander no longer being the lense through which whedon could project his own issues would have made him let go of the character a little , and if that would have allowed the writers room to re-evaluate their approach to the character and maybe gain some insight into the ways in which they had been perpetuating misogyny through him. and okay i kind of doubt it...but if that had happened, maybe we would have gotten a less misogynistic xander...or perhaps he would have been just as entitled and judgmental as ever and it all would have been a confused muddled mess because while the doyalist reality of whedon's own misogyny would have continued to dictate the character there would no longer have been any watsonian explanation for xander's attitude/behavouir.

anyways, this is a far from a well put together string of paragraphs but im just pondering the celluloids ya know? And oh man, as a side note, gay xander would have at the very least saved us all from 1) having to watch him thirst after the teenage potentials and 2) dating dawn in season 8.

*okay there was that one time in s5 where he goes on in detail about what makes spike so alluring but other than that

it’s a conversation about sexual assault and physical violence for some and that makes sense why people would consider that as a worst case scenario. but it is actually a conversation about global misogyny. sooo many ways you could take this, i have so many arguments and rebuttals that easily come to mind lol.

why would i, as a woman think it is desirable to be with someone who was socialized in various ways to believe i am a lesser or inferior human being.. in a survival situation. (even a white woman is far more desirable to me than a man of my own race)

i don’t see any women arguing that men would maul us on sight like a bear might lol. so bringing up (sexual & physical) assault statistics based on strangers is useless, that’s a cute attempt at a gotcha lmao, but i cite those statistics all the time as someone who was attacked by strangers and the statistics for it are still higher than one might think. i think it’s reasonable for people to bring up sexual assault because men are socialized to place a much higher value on sex than women. (which is why they might still have it on their mind in this case, whereas a woman would likely think she has bigger things to worry about.) also, once you know this man and he doesn’t attack you on the spot, he is no longer a stranger. you don’t have the option of leaving him (that’s choosing the bear), so that is the definition of someone close to you. this is also about what men would do if they knew for a fact they’d get away with it. this is already enough for many women to choose the bear. but let’s put that aside. no, i am not confident that the average man would assault me in some way overnight. men’s subjugation of us is more insidious than that. this debate is not about calling every single man on earth malicious. it is about how malice and ignorance make no difference in this situation (and on a collective level).

so. to begin with, we already know that men are not primed for catastrophe.

women survive longer during famine and epidemics. our bodies are hardier, we are more likely to outlive men through starvation. we have stronger immune systems from our estrogen, which matters in a situation of drinking from river water. let’s say we caught food, a fish. one fish. one could totally see that a man would reason he should get a bigger part of the fish, or even the whole fish this time. men need to consume more calories than women. if we were hunting, a man might insist he especially needs these calories so he could hunt for us. however, he would be better suited to sharing half the food with a woman because men are inferior hunters. they don’t have the endurance for distance. they are more likely to starve especially due to the lack of fat on their bodies, so they should conserve energy and focus on foraging and taking care of the shelter instead.

now let’s set aside physiobiological differences. men are simply not team players. women are socialized to be more nurturing and communal. think of a little girl being given a baby doll as soon as she’s old enough to play with toys. [boys are given toys associated with aggression, competition, and violence - toys that are “things”. girls are given toys that are associated with nurturing and domestic skill (as well as related to physical attractiveness) - toys that are relational.] this contributes to girls’ early age development, we develop empathy and social processing skills due to this. we care for the collective despite receiving much less praise and rewards for it. this plays out in both the workplace and home life/families.

think of a man who thinks he knows better than you do. this is the kind of insidious misogyny i’m talking about. a man may not display unadulterated hatred towards women, yet still believes they need to be protected (protected from who btw?). in a survival situation this contributes to men not being team players. he believes his decisions are the right decisions despite a woman’s input. this contributes to why men are deeply offended and defensive when rejected or disagreed with. why would i, as a woman think it is desirable to be in a survival situation with someone who could drastically change their opinion of me because of a mere disagreement? and what would happen if we explicitly discovered my decision was the better one? and why would i want to be in this situation with someone who becomes very emotional because of rejection, clouding their judgement towards the goal of this situation: us both surviving.

in a hypothetical survival situation, stuck in a forest with a man, the results are just not desirable. men think they are the more valuable counterpart, they believe they are smarter than they actually are (male hubris, female humility), men are less likely to understand what it actually means to be part of a team and to care for each other. and men are less likely to survive in a situation like this, regardless of any other data.
