Ok, so what in your opinion is the WORST mistake that the showrunners for Game of Thrones made in terms of content, either it's addition or redaction?
WARNING: Looooooong post ahead
Themes are for eighth-grade book reports
This absurd quote by one of the showrunners explains why exactly the show fell appart. They wanted to make a story... without themes. Anyone with a minimally functioning brain will tell that this is impossible because every story, even the simplest and least complicated story there ever, has a theme. Even a nihilistic story has a theme "Nothing matters". Every. Story. Has. A. Theme.
But Game Of Thrones didn't, at least not after the writers ran out of books to adapt and did their own thing. Everything every character did was no longer to build a narrative, but to essentially act as click-bait. The focus was to make people keep watching, not on making any content that was worth watching.
The first four seasons had it's problems, just like the books had it's problems, but Martin's writting was so brilliant that it managed to stay good even while being handled by absolute clowns. The moment season four ended was the moment the show stopped being an adaptation and became it's own thing - and like I explained before, said thing wasn't a story.
Shock
Both the show and the books had MANY shocking, heart-breaking and downright horrifying scenes: Daenerys being raped by Drogo; Bran being pushed out the window after accidentally seeing the queen fucking her brother; the whole deal with Craster and his daughters; the Dotrakhi destroying Mirri's village and her revenge against them and Daenerys; Ned's death; Melisandre giving birth to a shadow baby that killed Renly; The Red Wedding; Jeoffrey's death; Tyrion killing his father; Theon being tortured by Ramsay...
The difference is there were REASONS behind the shocking scenes Martin created. Even when you look at things like rape and torture scenes and threats of rape/torture - Martin used those scenes to remind us that the world he created is an EXTREMELY dangerous and downright vile place, and that the characters are never truly safe, and that there are WAY worse things than just being killed.
Dumb & Dumber on the other hand, gaves us scenes like an evil, former man of the night's watch evily making an evil speech to his fellow evil men, evily drinking whine from a human skull while nameless women were being raped in the background - but little does he know that Jon Snow, the hero, is about to wreck his shit. It takes something that could realistically happen (and that did happen in the books) and takes it up to eleven because the writers think shock is the same as quality and that the audience is SO STUPID that they need to practically make the actor jump out of the TV, grab us by the shoulders and scream "I'M EVIL! I'M THE BIG BAD! ROOT FOR THE HERO TO KILL ME!"
Pretty much every bad guy became a parody of Jeoffrey, ironically enough because the writers took Jeoffrey too seriously. He was a cruel, sadistic character, who had WAY too much power - but he was also a spoiled baby whose reply to Tyrion bitch-slapping him wasn't a threat, but "I'M TELLING MOM!" Jeoffrey worked because he was only allowed to do his thing whenever smarter, more competent characters like Tyrion and Tywin where not around, meaning his actions, while inhumane, never reached the point of no longer being believable.
The horrible things that happened to the characters no longer felt "right". For instance, Sansa had just been taken to the Eerie by Little Finger, who has a weird complex in which he sees her both as the daughter he never had with Catelyn AND as a replacement for Catelyn, and she was starting to truly be a player instead of a pawn... and then the writers realized "Oh shit, we should have not cut the Jeyne Pool/Fake Arya' plot, that was important" and forced it on Sansa, making Little Finger hand her on a silver plater to Ramsay and turning her into a victim AGAIN, this time to a man that dramatically fights his enemies without a shirt own, practically saying "come at me bro"
Compare this to Ned's beheading, or Catelyn and Rob being betrayed and killed by the Freys. These moments were shocking and downright depressing - but they were earned. The writting was on the wall for anyone to see: Ned was at the mercy of Jeoffrey, and the Starks had given the Freys, who are notoriously disloyal, a reason to resent them. These twists felt completely natural, were the only logical way for the situation the characters were in to play out, AND they had consequences to plot instead of just making the audience gasp and then being forgotten about.
Plot armor
It's kind of ironic and almost tragic that the show that became famous for killing characters later became the worst type of high-stakes series, putting the characters in situations they could NOT survive, not even if a goddamn miracle happened, and having them live anyway. What's even worse is that it happened repeatedly. If I had to see Jon Snow almost die and then survive anyway one more fucking time I was going to lose my mind.
There's no bigger proof that there were just no consequences for the "main" characters anymore than watching the second, third, and fourth episodes of season either. The first sets up that this battle against the night king and his army of undead is likely going to kill the majority of them, if they're lucky... and then in the third we see the plot armor in all of it's "glory", and then in the forth we find out that the Dotrakhi, who had ALL been killed, actually still have half the numbers they had the night before, somehow. Even red-shirts weren't dying anymore.
DORNE
This disaster needed it's own session because HOLY SHIT, it's a miracle/tragedy that everyone didn't go "Fuck it, I'm never watching another episode of this stupid show."
The Dorne plot in the books isn't perfect, but what the show did to it was so fucking bad that I'm pretty sure the writers didn't even read the Dorne chapters in the books, they just looked at a wiki, wrote down the names of a few characters and then did their own shitty thing.
In the books, Doran Martel is a clever, dangerous man, who pretends to be harmless so people will understimate him and step right into his trap. In the show, Doran Martel... died. That's it. I can't remember anything else that happened to him. Add him to the list of "Brilliant characters that became stupid due to shitty writing", I'm sure Tyrion, Varys and Little Finger will love making him company.
The sand-snakes, one of the main driving force of that plot, were all distinct characters in the books, with their personalities, goals, methods and motivations - basically they were created by a writer who knew what he is was doing. In the show they were all the same "character" who could be perfectly described by that horrible, cringy, PAINFUL line one of them (I can't even remember which) said to Bron "You want a good girl, but you need the bad pussy" (Seriously, if that actress ever kills the show-runners as revenge for having to say that, she'll be 100% justifyed in doing so)
And we cannot forget the driving force behind that unwatchable shit show: Ellaria Sand. In the books, the death of Oberyn made her believe that revenge only leads to more blood-shed. In the show, his death enraged to the point of wanting to avenge him and his family, and she did this... by killing his family. If that doesn't explain how insane and stupid this plot-line was, I don't know what will.
Hype = Character assassination
Many shows are based around the conflict between the bad guys and the good guys. Game Of Thrones is not one of these shows. Or at least it wasn't. As they ran out of ideas, the writers started mutilating every single character until they could be label as "Good" or "Bad", regardless of what felt right to the story and to the point that there was nothing left of said characters. Stannis's actor, Stephen Dillane, straight up said that the only thing he got from being on the show was money and that his character's motivations and decisions were nonsense - ironically enough, that kind of brutal honesty means that the writers had THE perfect actor play Stannis, and wasted his fucking time.
Here's a list of the characters that fell victims to this horrible fate: Catelyn Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Jon Snow, Melisandre, Stannis, Jorah, Daenerys (bonus points for being mutilated into being both a generic, shitty "hero" and a generic, shitty "villain") Greyworm, Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark...
Pretty much the only character who became more complex in the show than she was in the books was Cersei. While her book self was never just a "Generic Evil Queen", the show version of her was far more sympathetic, which made the stories she was part of interesting. Too bad the writers ran out of ideas of what to do with her after season six and just left her by the window drinking whine until Dany showed up to kill her. Which brings us to...
Why is this happening?
Cersei was seen as a threat in the last two seasons based on nothing but the things she HAD done. Her story just ended the very second season six did, but since she was still alive despite being one of the bad guys she had to die... I guess. She (and by extention Jaime) joined the list of characters that had nothing to do, but were still around: Davos, Theon, Yara, Melisandre, Bron, Sam, Gendry, Bran (the last one being SO unnecessary that he was cut from season five and no one noticed)
To combat that issue, the writers gave characters "motivations" that made no sense. For exemple: Sandor Clegane. His only reason to be in the show was so he could kill his brother. The problem was that Gregor was already dead. He was a walking corpse. There was nothing left of the abusive brother Sandor once knew, meaning he had no reason to fight him, and that, to keep Sandor around, the writers should have come up something new (like the redemption that book fans have been waiting for, and that has a lot of backing evidence). You might as well have had HIM be the one to randomly fly out of nowhere and kill the night king despite having no connection to him.
And since we're talking about the night king... Arya was the one to kill him. Why? Because the writers ruined Jaime's redemption arc, meaning that the only fitting ending for him was to die with Cersei, and so Arya could not kill Cersei despite wanting to, having the ability to do, AND having heard a prophecy that said she'd "Shutting brown eyes, blue eyes, and green eyes forever", the last one being the only one she had not done AND applying to Cersei. But Dumb & Dumber admitted they had no plan for this, so now that they were at the last season, they needed to do something with it, and they retconned it to mean Arya would kill the night king...
But Arya killing him meant Jon had nothing to do, so Dany had to go mad so he could kill her. To "hint" at that, they ignored all the not at all subtle foreshadowing the previous season had of Dany and Jon having a kid, and they even showed her getting jealous that he was technically the true heir... even though that made no sense since they were going to rule together anyway, and even after Dany went full "Mad Queen" she ASKED HIM TO RULE WITH HER. But anyways, he kills her and becomes king...
Except he doesn't actually become king and him being a secret Targaryen has no effect in the plot, because Bran needed to become king so there'd be a reason for him to be alive, because his magical powers turned into a plot-device. A plot-device that wasn't used at any goddamn point. Seriously, the only thing as bad as Bran becoming king was Euron's existence - dude was THE most useless villain ever AND the worst Jeoffrey parody.
A darker story (literally)
I could not end this rant without bitching about this. What is the point of spending an ungodly amount of money on sets, costumes, make-up, special effects... and then using such poor lighting that no one can see what the fucking is going on?
Anyway, this disaster of a series was so absurd it should be used as an exemple of what NOT to do.

Their most common argument is about how they decorate the apartment. Lilac is all in with technology (smart TV, smart home, smart refrigerator, Alexa—the whole nine yards.) Ethan is horrified by it all and just refuses to hook up his apartment to all these gadgets. Especially when in his opinion, these things can simply be done by standing up? And doing them yourself? In the end and in the name of compromise, he let's her install a smart TV.

Physical: Ethan loves her eyes, freckles, smile, and legs (plus he's a boob man but I'd argue he's an ass man with Lilac too. Sorry I don't make the rules) . She loves his eyes, hair, jaw, and basically that body.
Personality: He loves her kindness and passion for her work. She loves his intellect and dry sense of humor.

Ethan remembers because she's such a picky eater and tends to stick to the same dishes. It's hard for Lilac to remember his order because he likes to try new things and orders something different each time.

Ethan makes the lunch. Lilac packs it and leaves little notes in his. They range from inspirational quotes to nsfw content or innuendos because a player's gotta play.
The inspirational are Lin Manuel Miranda's good morning/good night tweets because those are the best thing ever.
She does one in the evening with the good night equivalent. This is because Ethan, though he acts like they're cheesy, got curious and wanted to know what the good night one would say. So she leaves him one at dinner by his plate.
The nsfw ones almost always result in Ethan tracking her down or paging her to his office to kiss her face off.

If they're away because of work, they text and call each other constantly. No matter how much Ethan claims he hates texting. He loves it when they're away because she will text him random pictures of her day (her food, something she saw that reminded her of him) or silly selfies. Eventually, she convinces him to do the same though he misses the point because his pictures are always so serious lol

Okay, doing this over here because my main tumblr is usually a place for me to vibe and I don’t want all the bullshit tied to that account, but basically: I’m really angry and disappointed with the dndads cast for how they’ve put a lot of the minors in their fanbase in danger. Everything below is a repost from twitter (with permission from the OP, crypticjoy), and I’ll link the thread in a reblog.

“I don’t usually do this, but: the way that the cast of @/dungeonsanddads engages with their audience is actively dangerous to minors, and they need to get it together. (cw for discussion of grooming, sexualizing minors, sexual assault)
First off, there are some iffy jokes and situations in the podcast itself. I’m not going to get into all of it right here, but have a google doc: [doc will also be linked in reblog]
Yes, the kids in #dndads are fictional, but that doesn’t mean this stuff doesn’t affect real kids listening. a. it normalizes talking/joking about kids in that way and b. There’s a lot of inconsistancy and confusion on the lines they draw--
Paeden saying “baby” is weird but Ron sitting in Terry Jr’s lap isn’t? I’m confused. You know who the fuck relies on that type of confusion and unclarity? Fucking predators
And I’m not saying every in-character decision has to be perfectly moral or acceptable, but the way the cast, out of character, discuss what’s weird and what’s not sends a lot of mixed messages. And that’s legitimately dangerous.
So then you take all of this, and you add a patron discord server that lets nsfw discussions run virtually unchecked--you create a fandom space that allows adults to discuss kinks, and porn searches, and just, all this other stuff, with teenagers...
... and it becomes a breeding ground for grooming and abuse.
The creators aren’t responsible for babysitting their fanbase or for how people engage with their content outside of their spaces (though, again, I’d urge them to be very careful about what kind of messages they’re sending)
But they ARE responsible for taking basic steps to keep the spaces that THEY create and engage with safe.
“But the rules for the server say 18+!” The rules say you have to be 18 *or have parental permission.* They also say to keep things PG-13. That’s vastly different than establishing something as an adult-only/nsfw space.
“Minors shouldn’t be joining/listening anyway!” The cast can’t control who listens and neither can I, but there’s a difference between knowing teens are listening to you discuss sex with your adult friends vs facilitating conversations between teens and adults on those topics.
“If people are uncomfortable they can just leave.” First off, this situation isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s unSAFE. Second: fuck that. It’s not on minors to set and maintain boundaries about this stuff; a lot of them literally do not know how
Not because they’re stupid, but because they’re young and inexperienced. It’s the responsibility of adults to set and enforce healthy boundaries around sexual discussions, and this particular group of adults has done a fucking terrible job
(Maybe don’t encourage listeners to DM you about kinks! Maybe especially don’t do that when you’ve communicated, intentionally or not, that making and escalating sexual jokes is a really good way to get a reaction from you guys)
I get that they didn’t expect to have so many young listeners, but to be aware of that fact and make no adjustments whatsoever is irresponsible and it WILL lead to someone getting hurt. Does their “young, thirsty, female” audience only exist to them when they can laugh about it?
And let’s be absolutely 1000% clear: this isn’t an issue they’re unaware of. The stuff I’m talking about is an ongoing problem with how their server is run, but it came to a head with one specific situation very recently:
They released a bonus, patron-exclusive episode about the dads taking the bdsm test. Given the general state of the server, I was worried about where those discussions might lead, so before it dropped, I reached out to @/anthony_burch to express my concern
He told me he raised the issue with @/fwong and Ashley, meaning at least three members of the dndads team were aware of the situation, and decided it didn’t warrant any type of preemptive action on their part
(alternatively, it means Anthony lied, which would be a whole separate issue)

I’m not overreacting. I have seen this shit happen, to my friends and to myself, and watching the dndads cast take absolutely no meaningful action to prevent situations like that from occurring directly under their noses makes me fucking livid
I can guarantee that the #dungeonsanddaddies fanbase includes both predators and survivors of abuse, grooming, etc (including those currently living through it), and I need them to think very, very hard about which group they’re prioritizing.
And I need that choice to be evident through more than just their words, because it doesn’t fucking matter how much you “really appreciate” that I brought up my concerns if you do fuck-all to address them.
It doesn’t matter how many times you say the word “consent” if apparently everyone was okay that “Darryl gets sexually assaulted” was almost a plot point played for laughs.
(His dare from Scam would have been rape, straight up. Just because no one said the word doesn’t mean it wasn’t coercive and gross).
I’d like to think the @/dungeonsanddads cast isn’t intentionally encouraging abuse, but they’re sure as hell enabling it, and they needed to get their shit together ages ago, because they’re not the ones their negligence hurts.”

So hey, @/fwong, some thoughts:
1.The rules are vague and unclear: what /exactly/ do you mean when you say “NSFW content is not allowed!” when the content of your show itself is so often nsfw? And how are you planning to enforce this?
Does it mean you’ll shut down the MBIC conversation that is literally just kink discussion? I need you to be clear on where the line is, because, again, predators rely on that confusion. Don’t give them a gray area to play in.
For an example of a more clear policy, it’s pretty easy to say, “yep, ‘Henry gets pegged’ sure is a sentence we said on our show and you don’t have to pretend it’s not, but if you’d like to discuss it in any more detail at all, you need to move”
2. Remember how I said I needed to be clear on whether you’re prioritizing survivors or predators? While I doubt it was intentional, the language you’re using here is prioritizing predators.
It’s not “don’t get people in trouble,” it’s “don’t make people uncomfortable.” It’s “we all have a responsibility to make sure this space is safe for everyone, especially the younger members of the community.”
You’re setting people up to be afraid of expressing concerns for fear of “getting people in trouble” or “inciting unnecessary drama.” Even if it’s not what YOU meant, it’s very easy for those words to be manipulated, so +
You absolutely have to be explicitly clear that if someone expresses their discomfort, you’ve got their back. Being safe is more important than being polite.
3. I need every cast member to take responsibility for their own actions. I’ve gotten no indication from any of you that you understand the ways in which the in-show things I brought up were harmful.
Acknowledging that harm is important not just because of the immediate effects of that content, but also because it implicitly sets an example for how similar complaints should be dealt with going forward.
When someone says “hey, I was uncomfortable that you seem fine with the Glennary ship, because she reads as very young to me,” I don’t need a dissertation on how the perception of characters can evolve due to your improvisational nature
I need to hear “oh, I interpreted her differently, but you’re right, we should have been more clear, and I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable.” Because your responses to your own mistakes set the tone for any other situations like that going forward.
How comfortable is someone going to be with coming to you, or Ash, or any of the mods about someone making them uncomfortable if they’ve seen that when people call YOU out, they’re argued with and shut down?
Don’t tell people you’ve “made it clear that you won’t go there” when they tell you that you ARE there. Listen to them and do better.
Set the expectation that people will be respected when they raise their concerns. “If you want to come at me you have to bring the heat” is not an appropriate response on a subject that made people genuinely uncomfortable.
In essence: set people up to be supported and protected, not dismissed.

1. Make designated channels for nsfw/18+ discussion. Generally speaking, this is a lot more effective than banning those discussions altogether, because it’s a lot easier to say “hey, can you move this conversation?” than “hey, I need you to stop”
In fandom spaces, it’s usually a good idea to have separate channels for talking about nsfw fiction vs discussing your personal sex lives.
2. Give everyone minor/adult roles; make sure your 18+ channels are locked to people who don’t have an adult role. It’s important that there’s more of a barrier there than just checking a box.

6. Make sure mods are on top of things BEFORE people have to say anything; sometimes being a mod means being willing to be the “asshole” who shuts things down before they get out of hand, even if they’re not asked.
Be generally aware of signals that people are uncomfortable or that things are escalating too far, and address those situations sooner rather than later.
*It should be noted that safety involves a lot of components beyond just containing nsfw discussions; this thread just happens to be focused on that one specific element.

Books of 2021, September
(Posting this now because there’s no way I’ll finish another book before the day is out.)
Reading slowed down toward the end of the month (managed to land in a bunch of thick reads at once, and none of them audio) and I still didn’t get to many of the books on my TBR. I’m also not counting a reread of The Ballad of the White Horse since it’s all of two hours on audio.
#65 - Mark of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse (original ‘21 TBR) - 5/5 stars
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Finally I found another Christian fantasy novel/series that isn’t heavy-handed about morality or allegory. The writing style was clean, if sometimes repetitive (trust me, after saying it four times in two chapters, I know the guests from that one noble house have blond hair), and there were moments of heavy exposition in the form of dialogue between characters who wouldn’t have needed to share such basic information they all knew; but neither of those complaints greatly detracted from the narrative. It kept a good, steady pace, the stakes were clear, and I cared about the characters. It was very easy to enjoy. And that ending!
Also also! A princess-adjacent character who never complained about dresses, the advantages of her birth, an arranged marriage, or her duties to her family!
I definitely plan to read the sequel.

I miss Anne. Her children and the Meredith kids are adorable, but I miss Anne.
#67 - Flight of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse - 3/5 stars
MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE. YES.
So much angst. Excellent characters. All the angst. Strangers to friends to lovers. ANGST.
Aaaaand then it went a little weird. Like, awkward Christian romance kind of weird where I misheard a bit of dialogue and ended up in the fetal position, cackling until my stomach hurt, while a friend demanded to know how that got past the editors.
Toward the end I kind of gave up. The author did a certain character dirty and I can’t countenance that. I’m not sure why she chose to make this character a POV when she ended up killing her before her internal conflicts could be realized and addressed. It felt incredibly contrived and forced and did absolutely nothing for the plot or the main character; while keeping said character alive would have added some depth and conflict that could have aided the story.
Right up until like the last quarter of the book I was content with the pacing and the stakes, even if the plot was kind of basic. But with that ending, I’m not sure I want to finish the trilogy because I’ve kind of lost interest.
#68 - Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery - 4/5 stars
This one hurt. Like, I knew what was coming. I accidentally read a “spoiler” and then Lucy alluded to it back in...Anne of Ingleside? So I knew what was coming and it still hurt.
I wasn’t ready for heartache yet here I am. Yes, I cried. Yes, it was probably a bad idea to read this right around 9/11. But it was still good.
As I don’t currently have any interest in The Blythes are Quoted, this closes out my read-through of the Anne of Green Gables series. Overall I loved it. Overall, even in the grief, it was a comfort.
#69 - Bloomability by Sharon Creech - 5/5 stars
Borrowed the audiobook of this middle grade on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a favorite book of one of my writing friends, so ended up on my TBR on her recommendation. A quick, fun, cozy sort of read. Weirdly enough it reminded me a bit of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls; possibly the similarities between that story and Dinnie’s “first life��.
#70 - The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui T. Sutherland - 3/5 stars
Read this at the insistence of my Sunday school class. So many kids have told me about this series.
I can definitely see why they enjoy it so much, and it would certainly have been a series I’d have devoured at their age. However, I wouldn’t say it carries over well for older audiences. (Not that this is a bad thing, only the reason I probably won’t read more unless it’s with my nephews in a few years.) And like...it’s so over-the-top? Everywhere you turn there are beheadings and murders and blood and angst. Not really my speed.
#71 - Orphan’s Song by Gillian Bronte Adams - 4/5 stars
I’ve had this book on my radar for a while but hadn’t planned to get to it until next year...but I needed something to listen to and the audiobook was on Hoopla. (Most of my reads this year have been audio...)
Definitely enjoyed this one. The characters were the highlight here; the writing style was easy to fall into but nothing remarkable, and the plot was pretty basic. (Nothing bad with “bad guys trying to take over the world and one girl with unknown power can stop them”, but it’s not complicated.) Excellent pacing, rich dialogue, organic world-building. My one true complaint is that the MC was supposed to be 12 but she acted and spoke more like 15 most of the time. My other, personal-taste complaint, is that the magic system seems a little deus ex machina. While I will definitely recommend this book (especially to my students), I don't think I'll continue the series.
#72 - The Electrical Menagerie by Mollie E. Reeder (original ‘21 TBR) - 5/5 stars
It took a while for the characters to develop. Before that, it was the delightful world that drew me in: the steampunk Wild West, the islands, the tech, the culture. Reeder crafts a delightful story and you can sense her experience and personal interests coming through in the details. The plot was well-paced and engaging, and I loved the dialogue. By the time the characters came into their own I was hooked. Thoroughly enjoyed this little adventure.
Bonus? The fantasy world Christianity was an easy fact of life and not heavy-handed at all.
#73 - The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (original ‘21 TBR) - 5/5 stars
I’ve long held that the first time I tried to read this book (back in high school??) I never finished it. But I remembered certain events which, it turns out, take place toward the very end of the book, so now I think I did actually finish it that first time and then just...forgot.
Anyway. I had a goal to read this in a month. Given the number of chapters, I had planned to read one a day, and have a few extra days in case things got crazy.
It...didn’t quite work out that way. Thankfully most of the chapters are short but I had a spate of time where I was too busy to read or didn’t have the brainpower for it. When I actually sat down to read a chapter I could get through it relatively quickly, and then in the last few days of September I just crammed. (And shouted at Tarva, the major Tolkien nerd among the friend group, much to her delight.)
This book is heavier than LotR, yes, but there is still that constant thread of hope tracing through it, however dark things may be. And that’s what I love most about Tolkien: that he saw and endured so much darkness, and out of it he painted light.
DNF:
The House of DunRaven by Steven Thomas Lympus (original ‘21 TBR)
The writing style was pretty off-putting and I couldn’t get into the story. (He started it off with a good scene, asked an important question, and then went back to explain stuff. Which works if it had been a chapter of explanation at most. No, I was into Chapter Four and he was still explaining.) Absolutely didn’t care about the characters. Not at all invested.
A Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson
Almost not worth mentioning since I only got one chapter in. What on earth was the author doing giving weirdly detailed descriptions of every single character? (I later discovered this is something like a companion novel to an established series? All the same, clearly not my cup of tea.)
Deerskin by Robin McKinley
I had high hopes for this, but it turns out not even McKinley can redeem this fairy tale. In fact, I think she might have made it worse. There isn't even a donkey that poops gold.
Even if I’d finished it, somehow, I still would have detracted points for the narrator. Her voice was dry and muffled and dull, with almost no inflection even where there should have been something for McKinley’s dry sarcasm.
100% would not recommend this book based on the content. Reviews suggest McKinley handles it all pretty well, but all the same....

- PINKY AND THE BRAIN - EXPERIMENTS -
Below the cut is a personal project on the much more morbid side. Animal lab experimentation is always something I’ve found equal parts horrible and fascinating. Once in a blue moon, I’ll do research on the subject out of curiosity and/or for storytelling purposes. Even as a kid, I found this of interest, and when watching Pinky and the Brain I was always a bit disappointed that we never saw more of what the characters actually went through in the lab during the day. Granted, there’s a reason as to why this was never shown, as a child audience had to be kept in mind, yet still I pondered about it....
Over the last few days, I’ve been churning out compositions based on internet findings -- old and new experiments that rats and mice are put through, many of them humane, some of them very much not. It was an eye-opening journey for me artistically and otherwise, discovering what I’m comfortable drawing and what I never want to sketch again, as well as learning more about this realm of the scientific world.
WARNING: SOME GRAPHIC CONTENT BELOW THE CUT. If needles, patients dealing with the effects of cancer, and general portrayals of pain bother you, I wouldn’t bother venturing onward. I not only drew out experiments that the characters might have gone through, but also describe all of my findings in detail and provide video footage to go along with it. While I didn’t go full-on vivisection or anything, some of this might still be disturbing, so I’m taking extra precaution.
All of the images below are “color-coded” and graded. The experiments start out fairly tame, then get worse... and worse... and worse. The backgrounds reflect this, going from fairly light to quite dark.

Experiment #1 - Tail Flick Test
A fairly harmless experiment. The subject is mostly restrained, leaving only their tail exposed. An intense light beam is projected onto the exposed appendage, with the animal flicking their tail when the pain/heat becomes too much. This test is utilized in basic pain research and to measure analgesic effectiveness.
I wanted Brain to wear an expression of deep apathy -- he’s done this a million times and will probably do it a million times more. At this point, he doesn’t even care anymore.

Experiment #2 - Rotarod Performance Test
Another experiment that’s generally harmless. One or multiple subjects are placed on elevated rotating rods so as to measure such things as endurance, balance, grip strength, and more.
I imagine Pinky would enjoy this test, as he’s familiar with running on a wheel and actually enjoys more strenuous activities. Brain, on the other hand, would only participate via sheer force. He’d also be more prone to fall after a shorter period of time, getting tired faster than his cage mate.

Experiment #3 - Shot (General)
Nothing special. Just Brain about to get shot.
This is all highly exaggerated, of course. A mouse would simply be held firmly, not strapped down, for a simple injection. Also, I can’t imagine why they’d be shot in the face, although Meg told me that scientists tend to draw blood samples from a mouse’s cheek. Need to look that up. I wasn’t at all going for accuracy here, but rather how it might feel -- how scary it would be.
Experiment #4 - Sciatic Nerve Constriction
An experiment in chronic neuropathic pain, due to the central or peripheral nervous system sustaining damage. Under anesthesia, the animal’s sciatic nerve is exposed via skin incision. The connective tissue between the biceps femoris muscles and the gluteus superficialis is cut. The nerve is then loosely tied with four chrome gut ligatures so to occlude, but not arrest, blood flow. The wound is sutured, the animal is given 24 hours to recover, and then both hindpaws are tested for pain sensitivity. Sounds terrible, but it’s certainly not the worst of the experiments I researched.
I have no idea what’s going on with the coloring in this. Again, going for feel more than accuracy, but the hues are way too calm.

Experiment #5 - Writhing Test
Particularly cruel test in which acetic acid is introduced into the system, inducing severe internal pain. The typical response includes writhing, abdominal retraction, and stretching of the hind limbs. Despite the test being withdrawn in 2004 for unethical reasons, it is still employed by some.
This was my favorite one to draw. Although the lighting and shading are not the greatest, it made for an interesting experiment. I did not intend for the lines to be so bold, but it kind of turned into an almost comic-style illustration. I ended up playing around with it a bit and like the result enough to post it.
I would not watch the video below if you are squeamish. It is difficult to swallow. On another note, you may find the “Empathetic Behavior: Emotional Contagion in Mice” section in the second link of interest. For cage mates in particular, if one or both mice were injected with the same acid, and allowed to observe one another, an injected mouse would writhe more if its partner was also in pain. I can’t help but imagine Brain and Pinky in this type of situation....

Experiment #6 - Transgenic K5ras Mouse / Nude Mouse (Combination)
Experiment in which cancer is induced in the system. Nude mice are bred for a number of tests, and are used for this one, as well.
My least favorite to draw, but my favorite to color. One particular experiment I found showed a tumor in every follicle on a mouse’s muzzle. Was trying to go for this look, albeit exacerbated.

Bonus:
This is based on a test that I found absolutely hilarious. There’s a certain chemical, called W-18, that’s been on the drug market for... some years. The potency of it is supposedly insanely high, although this has never been proven. It’s basically a research chemical (created at a university in the 80s) with analgesic properties that were shown to be “painkillers or blockers of the painkilling effect of morphine in mice”. Mice, not humans. To quote a specific article:
“... when they first injected some of these chemicals into the animals at a dose similar to aspirin, the mice stood up for about a minute and fell over unconscious. They remained unconscious – for five days. But they weren’t dead. They were still breathing. And when they woke, they seemed fine, other than being really hungry and thirsty.”
They literally keeled over from the supposed potency of it. From what I recall, they don’t even know exactly what it was doing to their system, other than the fact that it knocked them out. I just find it funny that they were completely fine after awakening days later.
Although the pure smell of it wouldn’t cause such a reaction, I liked the idea of it in picture form and so depicted Brain simply taking a whiff before passing out.

Experiments researched, but not implemented:
- Tail dipped in ice cold water (mentioned here: cold water) - Morris water maze - Porton Down nerve agent test(s) (the worst; not even sure how I’d depict this)
The Porton Down tests sounded so indescribably cruel that I simply couldn’t bear to put Brain or Pinky through either of those, much less draw them out. It was the most horrific of the experiments I found, second only to a story about a French physiologist in the 1700s/1800s who performed, I believe, vivisection on live, six-week-old puppies. There’s a limit and that’s my limit. Even the cancer-based composition above was difficult to create. I legit felt dirty drawing it.
Researching these subjects was incredibly interesting, and I came across a few articles that touched on animal experimentation and the question of whether or not it’s ethical. Should such practices continue? It’s more complicated than a simple “yes” or no” answer. Some tests are fairly harmless, whilst others border on the inhumane, and some are downright cruel. Some people say that, without testing, there would be a lot less medicine on the shelves to assist in relieving and curing our ailments, whilst others argue that 90+% of the time the testing done is unnecessary, the results yielded by the subjects dissimilar to those that would be shown by humans and, henceforth, stating that the inaccuracies are numerous. This particular article offered up what I thought was a pretty genuine and interesting debate on the matter:

In an interview with Dr. Jeffrey Mogil, a neuroscientist, he mentions that:
“You have complete control over everything in mice. Within limits, you can do whatever you want as long as you minimize pain and suffering of the subjects.“

While many establishments do follow the Animal Welfare Act, other laboratories still implement unethical practices. Also, the rules for what constitutes as acceptable in regards to tests that can only be performed without painkillers or anesthesia administered is... nebulous.
Thankfully, there is a number of lab testing equipment on the market specifically designed to be more humane and less stress-inducing to its subjects. These restrainers, for example, allow the animal to “walk in” without having to be physically forced backwards into a container:

So there are options. How often are such options utilized in the field? I have no idea, although there are laws that should be followed and, from the sound of it, generally are adhered to. Not everyone in this business is cruel. Though you do have your occasional psychopath who performs very morally questionable operations behind closed doors, I believe that this is a great exception to the rule, and that there are a lot of laboratory workers who genuinely want to inflict as little pain as possible upon the animal. Just an opinion. I don’t have tons of evidence, but it seems like most people are sane. Lol.
Most of the experiments I inflicted upon Brain because, I think, Pinky is so pure that I have a hard time imagining him sustaining any kind of extreme pain that would genuinely hurt him. Also, he borders on being freakin’ masochistic, finding pleasure in a lot of painful situations, whereas Brain does not. Brain has been through a lot, mentally and physically. It seemed more... “appropriate” to put him in these situations, as terrible as that sounds.
All of that having been said, I never want to do this kind of exercise again. While a lot of it was interesting, and some of it even fun, parts of it were legitimately painful. The cancer one.... I felt horrible....

originally 2am thoughts/concepts that i might draw aka revisiting the concept of the egos as different regenerations of the doctor (debate and additions are welcome):

(first regeneration after the time war and as such major guilt and lonliness from being the sole survivor who also had to be the one to end it. this paralleling to schneep’s 9 month disappearance and his possible guilt resulting from the events of say goodbye and moreso kill jse (as well as schneep probably doing risky things in the name of stopping anti). other things including, sass, calling humans “stupid apes”, rational, angry sometimes, but can appreciate the ancient human music that is tainted love, saving their friend/companion and telling them to live a good life as they head off to face their longtime enemy,the pain you see on his face when he gets compared to said enemy (”you would make a good puppet dalek), bananas being good source of potassium)

(is kind of a mess but a cool mess, generally the most emotional/human of the incarnations, starts off as a cool, charismatic type of guy but slowly goes downward into a spiral of sadness and lonliness as everyone he loved leaves (ya see the connection im getting at?), loses the girl he loved and missing the chance to tell her he loved her, ”im fine” he says as he just lost his best friend and is now alone standing in the pouring rain, accidentally quoting the lion king and harry potter but also “no second chances im that kind of man,” loves little shops and making things that go ding and silly made up words like “wibbly wobbly timey wimey”, literally Human Nature/Family of Blood shows how much he wanted a human life with a wife and kids and the episode "the doctor's daughter" where he finally gets a kid and loses her, the hero who goes from saving the universe with all his friends around him to him dying alone not wanting to go, literally called “the man that regrets” in dotd, listen to love don't roam on YouTube)

Reasons why Terminator Dark Fate is a worthy sequel of T2
It wrapped up a stale story and respected its predecessor’s finale
Skynet is dead, long live Skynet. Yes, there is no fate and Sarah was able to kill Skynet, but Skynet wasn’t a product of only its time nor an incident made by rogues: Skynet was a warning of what would become of people if they were too arrogant. It’s a tale of hybris. Men get too self-reliant and create something that will bring about their downfall: they become God, but by becoming God they commit a sin so big, they will need Jesus Christ (John Connor or James Cameron, if you will) to save themselves. I mean, if you don’t see the correlation between the Virgin Mary and Sarah Connor (Sarah is also the wife of Abraham, the quintessential mother in the Bible), y’all are blind (she gets inseminated by an “angel” sent to protect her, by her own son, ergo God). Terminator Dark Fate didn’t become woke, it did what T2 started to do, it de-christianized its message for a wider audience (Hollywood doesn’t pander to white christian americans anymore in 2019, go figure). In both movies, Sarah isn’t the Virgin Mary anymore, she’s the mentor, she takes action and she changes her own future and that of billions of people: she becomes the saviour. In the sequel to TDF she obviously was supposed to be the mentor to the new saviour. By killing John, it gave the story back to Sarah and a new hope for the future, taking out some of those harmful tropes where women are only good to “birth” the father of the resistance and not be them. John Connor was never a character you were going to be satisfied with, because he’s an ideal. You liked the teen version, because he was a rebel-ish punk who did everything he wanted, had a motorcycle and a pet robot. You were never going to like the gritty future version of a man destroyed by everything and also he was never supposed to become that. All of Sarah’s struggles the moment she found out she was pregnant were to protect her son from that future. Hadn’t they killed him off in 1999, he would’ve just been a 45 year old drunk - that’s where his character was going after defeating Skynet.
It isn’t contraddictory to have another AI replace Skynet.
Skynet and Legion are a cautionary tale, they are false gods, Frankenstein’s creature and the devil. It’s not repetitive, it’s not something that can be prevented in full, because humanity IS on that path. Humanity wants to play God and Sarah and John’s effort to stop Skynet was silent, it was secret (despite Sarah’s efforts to have people believe her, nobody did). Do you really think it would be so difficult to imagine another company, working on a similar project, at the same time in the late 90s - early 2000s? The only weak point is the implication that Legion would occupy terminators and the same tactics as Skynet, but I’m guessing if Sarah has been killing Terminators in the past for 30 years, Legion could’ve “read” something about it and developed itself to fit the past or got inspired, I don’t know. It’s not that far-fetched to have another AI use the same tactics.
It introduced a new scary terminator, who is perfect for 2020
The Rev-9, like its predecessors, is an inflitration model (and that’s the only reason they cast a latin actor) who is built to hunt the same way the first two were, but it does it better: because 2020 is a scary time. The T-800 had to look on a phone book and kill three Sarah Connor before getting to the right one. This one? It needs a working internet connection.
Also, to all of you saying that politics should stay out of movies,
- the T-800 was an intimidating male hunting a defenseless woman
- the T-1000 was a cop hunting a supposed “crazy woman and criminal”
- the Rev-9 is an immigration officer hunting a defenseless immigrant.

Arnie is old and that’s what made it so much more believable for me.
People keep using this quote from The Terminator to say how terrible writing and what a huge plot hole it was to make the T-800 a dad: “That Terminator is out there. It can't be reasoned with, it can't be bargained with...it doesn't feel pity of remorse or fear...and it absolutely will not stop.Ever. Until you are dead.”
Here’s a few reasons why their reasoning is biased:
First, off screen reason: this is the first movie, Cameron had no idea what would become of its own sequels. He hadn’t predicted Arnold would have such a following and I’m sure a re-programmed Terminator wasn’t in its plans. The first movie was about the horror of the terminator, we weren’t supposed to feel anything for it but fear, because its purpose was to scare us and nothing else.
Second, in-character reason: Kyle Reese is a soldier in the future. He has only seen these machines kill and maim and knows that, just because this one has skin and hair and muscle on its endo-skeleton, it isn’t less machine than the ones he has been fighting all of his life. He only knows this one’s worse: because he has a single purpose.
Third, non canon reason: Cameron from TSCC. Nobody was offended when she started to develop feelings for John in that series, why is everyone so offended by Carl now? Yeah. But it’s not canon, so let’s go to the last reason.
Fourth, canon, on-screen, in-character reason: THE WHOLE EFFING MOVIE YOU LOVE SO MUCH. Terminator 2 is all about the differences between the T-1000 and the T-800. Yes, it was re-programmed, but it wasn’t programmed to get attached to John, to learn from him, to almost act as a surrogate father, to give him a sign of their relationship as he was lowered to his death. It has been established machines can feel. Even the Rev-9, who’s still fully on mission, has a personality, the same way Patrick’s was. They exist, therfore they are. They have their own thoughts, their own doubts and that means they can develop a conscience and get attached. Carl says he doesn’t love his family the way a human would and it shows, the same way the T-800 from T2 didn’t love John like a Kyle Reese would have.
It gave us a new found family dynamic and used old tropes to tell new stories
Dani, Grace and Sarah have an amazing dynamic. Adding Carl to the mix was a bonus, because it created tension, but at the same time it gave us back that soft T-800 everyone of us fell in love with at 10-13 years old.
It did what TFA tried to do but better, imho. Star Wars fans were starved and when Disney made that movie, it still was considered a good producer of excellent content (now, not so much). TDF was produced by a variety of studios, because nobody wanted to take full responsibility after the disaster that was Genysis (and who could blame them?). Nobody praised TFA for its attempt to start a new saga, re-using ANH’s storyline with new characters and then build from there a new story, but it’s because they didn’t do it right. TFA doesn’t give you time to care about the characters, it’s a messy introduction of what could’ve been a very good trilogy if only they tried harder.
TDF, in my opinion, did try harder. It gave us a simple hunter-hunted storyline, where all of the cast is in the same place at the same time. This way, you can care about the development of their relationships. You care about Grace and Dani, not because the movie told you to, but because you can see Grace’s affection and ammiration from the very first scenes and, by the end, you see the affection Dani has for this stranger who’s sole purpose it taking care of her, when she’s so used to be the one to take care of others (see the first few scenes with her brother and father). You care about Dani and Sarah, because the whole movie builds up to the mentor storyline without telling you. You care about Carl and Sarah, because of all the build up from past movies, but also because of the little things (”I’m never f* calling you Carl” to calling him just that a few scenes later or Sarah calling out the Rev-9 by telling it, “we’re not machines”). Everything it did, it did without telling us what to feel and that’s rare in a world where franchises are constantly telling you who you should like and why, instead of writing a good story and letting you figure it out by yourself.

It is not by far a perfect movie. Having 3 producing companies and six writers didn’t help, the same way it didn’t help that Tim Miller was basically ghost-directing for the ever-too-busy James Cameron.
It could have been better in many ways: firstly, by using smaller scenes and a smaller budget and maybe a little less CGI and a little more practical effects. It was too ambitous and fans hadn’t yet forgiven this franchise for Genysis, because fans are butthurt babies who only want things to be they way they want them (I hated Genysis, don’t get me wrong, but I decided if this movie was going to be worth it once they said it wouldn’t be a sequel and watched a couple of trailers, it isn’t that hard). Another reason it bombed, beside the active boycotting, was the close to absent promotion except for a couple of lines.
Anyway, this messy post is just to explain the reasoning why I believe it is a worthy sequel and, in my opinion, without the nostalgia goggles on and taking out of the equation the “originality” factor, I dare say it’s perfectly on par with The Terminator.

Megs: Max, I am so happy that you are here! Can you believe that you’re here today?
Max: Haha, yes - I can. But I am honored to be here.
Megs: Max, sit with me. For those in the audience who may not know you, tell us about when and why you joined the fandom.
Max: Yanno, I always made my best guess at this before, but I knew you were going to ask me this - so I looked it up. Did you know that now there’s this Official Tumblr blog called @memories, and it knows down to the minute when someone joined? Let me go check it… *digs through the blogs posts* Okay, it was apparently 07/31/2017 at 1:17:15 PM, which means it must have been on the weekend because of the time of day haha.
As for why ... hmm, well… I found the Choices app one day, when it only had like… three series I think! Anyone else remember that time?
Megs: I do! Because I was playing Hollywood University I think I downloaded choices the day the app came out.
Max: Awh! Well, I fell in love with The Freshman Series. Mostly because of Chris Powell and Zack Zilberg, and a long time ago I was in another fandom that had tons of fan fiction/art… so I googled “Choices Chris Powell” and any other combination I could think of looking for possible fanfiction. The fandom was almost non existent at the time. There was actually one person, who has long since left the fandom due to fandom dramas - we all know the kinds I’m talking about - but a few others had started posting their works as well… and I got hooked. Eventually I felt the bug to write how I felt TF should play out as well, and here I am *looks back at the “joined tumblr timestamp”* uhh… 20ish months ago! Haha!!
Megs: LOL, when you put it that way it doesn’t sound like that long ago ... lets call a spade a spade - that was almost 2 years ago! That’s amazing! You have to have seen so much in this fandom! What is it that keeps you around?
Max: There are so many awesome people in this fandom, in this world we’ve all created for our pixelated loves lol. Soooo many creative minds to follow and enjoy. The content people share, original or repost… it’s great.
... Unfortunately it is also a double edge sword ... the drama, the jealousy, the rumors, the hate, etc. I’ve sadly seen far too much and it comes in so many forms… it’s unnecessary.
Megs: I couldn’t agree more! If you could tell the fandom one thing - what would it be?
Max: It would be that we’re all here because we want to have a good time. No one came here to get ridiculed, to be scrutinized or chastised for their opinions, their likes or dislikes. Real life has enough of that going on. We are all individuals - if you want to be treated nicely, fairly, etc. you must also do the same to others. There is no reason someone must agree with you or anyone else. Live and let live. Embrace our differences as it makes us who we are. Most of the issues I see stem from a simple difference in opinion. That is ridiculous. Everyone’s entitled to their own thoughts. We must build each other up, not tear one another down. No one here owes anyone anything, now go have some fun.

Awh, Max ... okay, let’s get back to you. We know that you’d fight anyone for the position of The Chris Powell Appreciation/Fan Club. And for those who don’t know, Max has been retelling the full The Freshman series, interweaving dialogue and plot from PB but also adding much of her own content. MC and Chris get a backstory. Chris gets best friends from back home. What is your favorite piece that you have written?
Max: Oh geez hahaha. Um… can I just say The Freshman Chronicles as a whole? I’ve written for different fandoms, and I have original WIPs but I’ll stick to the Choices fandom for this answer. I’ve put a lot of time into TFC. Tons of additional story work, research on characters and their backgrounds, PBs and my own OCs. You should see my file folder setup haha. It’s crazy… I have so many docs, pictures and gifs. Most organized by location (Hartfeld, Boston, New Haven, Cherryfield, etc.), then by character… and on some I get more detailed and split them by emotion and situation.
Megs: By what again?
Max: Emotion and Situation ... Yeah. I warned you it was crazy! *laughs* TFC was the reason I joined tumblr really. Instead of staying a Nonny and only reading others posted works. I wanted to comment, like and reblog what I enjoyed, while I also worked on my own contribution to the fandom. I had a vision for Chris and MC that had more than the game could give, and I wanted to see if i was still any good at writing since it had been years and years… it’s funny to see how different my current posts are from my first over a year ago. Makes me want to go update a few because they could use a little help *awkward laugh*
Megs: I’m sure we can all relate to that! Hmmm ... I’m starting to get a feel for this, I think, but what is your writing process?
Max: Lots of planning, mostly in my head. When I feel like I have a decent concept I might type out some notes or work it into my outline (another crazy thing I have going for TFC because it’s so big haha). But usually, once I hatch out a basic plan on where I’m going… I just start typing. Keeping the general plot and main points I want to hit in mind, I simply start typing… keeping it as organic as possible. It usually works out well.
Megs: Do you have any advice for other writers?
Max: First, and most importantly… do it because you enjoy it. Don’t do it for likes, reblogs, popularity, etc. If you’re having a good time dreaming things up and typing them out, that’s what’s important. The rest is just an extra bonus. Also, don’t give up. It’s easy to become discouraged, frustrated, distracted and more… but remember - your creative cells can’t be running all the time. They need to rest just like your body. Take breaks… go read, play games, hang out with friends/family, watch a movie… whatever. Just do something to help you relax, to reset and you’ll very probably find inspiration and/or motivation to continue. Remember, this is for fun. *wink and finger guns*
Megs: So what do you do for fun?
Max: I actually have a few things I do regularly. A big one is making costumes/props for conventions, small productions, etc. I also train and show horses. I do the same with my dogs, but more for competitions and not really any shows. I’ve always drawn, sculpted, painted since I was old enough to hold things with my hands… and about a year ago I started learning how to do it digitally as well. I run (not at all for fun haha) and play hockey (totally for fun), follow comics and watch anime. I've restored houses, cars and old furniture. I like to read as much as I can - that’s an important one. I also play video games. Something I’ve done since I was young… I've even competed, and won, a few gaming tournaments.
Megs: You don’t know how to be bored do you?
Max: LOL, Megs. Yeah, um, so there’s a “few” *makes air quotes* of my never ending list of interests haha. Gives me a lot to talk about with people, eh?
Megs: Not that I can understand how you’d have time for this ... but what do you do to help pay for your many activities?
Max: Oh like, my job? Well that can be a simple answer… like “I work in software” but the more interesting way to say it is I use my MBA, experience in business, the financial industry and technology to improve and stabilize my customers environment through technological solutions that fit their specific needs. *presses lips together* I solve problems by designing solutions. Bored yet? Hahaha.
Megs: No! That sounds wonderful! Who doesn’t want their stuff to be designed better? Any chance you could start working for tumblr? Some of us have a few complaints ... tags ... mobile losing our work ...

Megs: *blushes* Oh my gosh, you have to stop! Here’s the key to how I do it ... I wake up at 5:30am and read for about 30 minutes. Then I workout and start my day. I read in line at the grocery stores. I read on my breaks at work.
Max: Oh my gosh - you’re such a nerd and I love that! Okay, nerd, what is your favorite thing to do, besides reading all the things of course?
Megs: This show, of course! And, of course, getting people to do silly things on this show with me. For instance - with as athletic as you are, I hear you can’t jump?
Max: Megs, shhhhh. You told me you weren’t going to bring that up.
Megs: I did no such thing! (Meg says while laughing) I said I might not bring it up.
Max: Uh huh.
(Kris Kross’s “Jump” starts playing in the studio)
Megs: Come on - show me what you’ve got!
(Megs starts “singing” along and jumping along with the song. Max stays seated. Megs finally pulls Max up into a standing position. Max plays along and “jumps” next to Megs - getting no air at all.)
Oh, come on Max - put some real strength in to it. Jump! Jump! Jump!
(Max jumps and gets the smallest amount of air time.)
Max: *laughing* Megs - I’m tall! I don’t need to jump to reach things!
Megs: *laughing* That must be nice. I got good at this type of jumping because I had to learn to jump up and gently grab things from the grocery so I didn’t knock everything down.

It's funny how Rouge literally fell due to knuckles, which made her fall for him.
(Rouge falls towards lava. knuckles saves her.)
Then shadow fell beacuse of overworking himself (even sonic started telling him to go back to he arc to rest. It's kind of sad really.), so instead of him falling beacuse of sonic, sonic's falling for him. (To yknow save him.)
(Shadow falls towards earth. Sonic tried to save him. It failed. )
To me it's kind of weird how to two instances are almost identical (makes me think the Rouge stuff mightve been a foreshadow. Hehe.)
But the idea that Rouge later wanted to pursue romantic intrest in Knuckles after saving him always intrigued me.
Beacuse, what if sonic DID manage to save shadow? Or went down with him?
Or hell- shadow in the Twitter takeover already acknowledged sonics little heroic gesture.
Addressing the elephant in the room, I'm not the most common type "shipper" (I mere enjoy speculating and theorizing on interactions rather than romance. The romance is a side bonus to me.) I don't like it when ships become cannon, even if I like the ship itself. What I do enjoy is speculation and theorization.
Turns out sa2 just happens to be one of those story's I can break apart like Legos and rebuild to my hearts content.
The way that Rouge and Knuckles are meant to be these kinds of "opposites" to Shadow and sonic in the same way Rouge and shadow are the opposites to sonic and knuckles.
It's so intriguing to me. It confuses me too, beacuse clearly the writers weren't going for a romance. If they were, then it was incredibly watered down.
I try to wrap my head around it. The way sonic thinks of shadow and how he thinks of him at the end of the final act.
Espically since out of all the paired characters (Rouge and knuckles, Eggman and tails.) Sonic is the only one actively thinking about Shadow and that "ultamite lifeform" shit. Which let me remind you- there is a (apperently not cut out) line from shadow where he says he thinks sonic is the ultamite lifeform, instead of him. (THEN OH- DIED?!?!?)
Sonic gets distracted by amy. Which if I am correct, might actually be the pair for sonic in the case? (Everyone is paired up on the arc with their opposite counter part except for sonic.) (Its nice considering she only went to ask if he was okay. The problem is that sonic is definetly showing a face here and not expressing the thing that's troubling him.)
I feel like its not purposefull, but the scene reminds me the one amy had with shadow. The way she brings the two boys out of that melancholic thought process and gets them moving along. (I don't know how she does it, but somehow she gets people out of a rut.)
My bias with this is that the foreshadow this was Shadow's scene where he cried thinking of Maria. I never seen sonic cry in game not once! Yet why the hell do these two scenes directly contrast eachother?
Shadow is thinking of Maria, a person he holds near and dear to his heart to the point of where this entire arc (haha) and story was made beacuse of that Inciting incident. Sonic is thinking of shadow, a person he basically just met! JUST LIKE ROUGE WHEN IT COMES TO KNUCKLES.
Rouge, just like sonic comes with antagonizing their red counterpart. The whole: " your stealing MY emerald!" And "you FAKER!" Both create the same reaction out of their counterparts. That being "faker? Hah! You're not good enough to be my fake"/showing off abilities to disprove that, and "your emerald? That's my emerald, your just trying to steal it!" (Or something along the lines of that beacuse im going off memory with the quotes.)
Then, after a few battles, (forest battle, over lava in space, e.c.t) they come to terms with one another after their final battle/interaction where they learn something new about one another.
(Rouge gives back the emeralds as a thank you for saving her, showing some generosity in her own selfishness. Knuckles shows that he actually cared about her by trying to save he. Both brush it off and make an excuse to hide it.)
(Shadow asks Sonic is, taking intrest in him as a person. Thia contradicts the rest of the story where he showed no interest in Sonic at all, showing he's actually grown some respect towards the sonic. Sonic also later shows a level of concern and care for Shadow, as he tells him to go to arc to rest during the fight with the bio lizard, and even almost sacrifices himself to save shadow from certain doom. This contrasts with the earlier version of him, who wanted to beat the guy up every chance he got.)
Plus, the way Rouge and sonic interact on the arc seems very genuine to me, yet it confuses me.
See, Rouge is doubting her knowledge of Shadow, and Sonic reinforms her of who shadow is. (The same way shadow had ask who sonic is, now sonic is telling Rouge who SHADOW is.)
Something along the lines of: "he a brave and heroic hero who sacrificed his life to save the planet. Shadow, Shadow the hedgehog."
This confuses me.
Why is it that Sonic, someone who spent most of his time just fist fighting and racing rather than talking to Shadow, suddenly know enough to give what I beilve to be- the most heartwarming speeches of the entire game?
Then again, now as I write this... Rouge did show Shadow a paper of the "BioLizard" asking if he really was the "ultamite lifeform" or if the giant lizard was.
So perhaps, her questioning Shadow's authenticity makes sense.
At the same time, this moment makes me wonder what the relationship between Shadow and Sonic mightve actually been like if I weren't for the "Shadow= angry edgy angst boy who always has to fight sonic" charactization he's been getting.
The ended off as companions. That could blossomed into a freindship. (Or I guess in this cause, whatever relationship type you think mightve happened.)
Even outside sources, like the Sonic Boom games (not TV show, suprisingly) shows sonic even saying something along the lines of, "too bad he's such a grump, else he would've been a great addition to the sonic team."
Going back to Rouge and knuckles though:
Rouge us on team dark.
She's openly flirtatious.
She's is more talkative (than anyone in her team.)
Rouge is incredibly dominant (Shadow as well, but anytime she's not paired with him she's taking over everybody- sooo?🤷)
Rouge is the one who brings her team together. (She got shadow and omega to hold hands and do a team hand thing)
Now there Knuckles, on team hero.
Knuckles is way more introverted. (Do you think a person who gains energy from social activity could survive in his situation? No!)
He's a protector. (He protects the emerald, and his freinds. He protects people.)
He is a bit easily fooled/gullible due to lack of knowledge on the outside world.
Now they have way more characteristics that this. The reason for why I only wrote these is beacuse:
Sonic is also the most talkative on his team, (Though it's debatable whether or not he's flirtatious.), he also tends to be pretty dominate as he's defined as a "leader" of his team. He also brings his team together (Knuckles, Tails and Amy all met through him. It's safe to assume he brought them together.)
Shadow is also the more introverted of the team. (Just to clarify, I'm using introverted in the more stereotypical way here? Like quiet, more internal than external, e.c.t.) He's also somewhat of a protector. (Despite his purpose being a "weapon" he decided to protect Maria, he protects his identity, and in someway, protect earth. He's got a heart of gold.)
He is also somewhat gullible, just in a different way. (Also, apperently in the Japanese version of sa2, he uses a certain pronunoun to describe himself. If I can recall correctly, it translates to something like "young boy", which is a more innocent and pure way to describe oneself..I may be wrong so take with a massive amount of salt.)
(Oh and remember he's been up in space his entire life and then trapped in a giant refigerator for about 50 years, so in terms of knowledge of the world he's probably just as gullible as Knuckles is, even to the point of where both of them were tricked/manipulated by Dr. Eggman in order for them to work for him. What's even worse is his memory problems, which means there's definetly a higher chance he can be manipulated AGAIN.)
So basically, Knuxouge vs Sonadow doesnt truly exist as separate entities beacuse the two ships and characters themselves are so entwined that its hard not to see the comparisons.
Also, Rouge and Shadow were introduced in the same game. (Along with others but they're not the focal point right now.)
There is no way in hell that these two wouldn't have similar traits to sonic and knuckles BEACUSE THE OPPOSITE OF SONIC AND KNUCKLES IS KNUCKLES AND SONIC.
THEN THEY TAKE THE OPPOSITE KNUCKLES AND SONIC, (which is sonic and knuckles) AND THEN CONTRAST IT DIRECTLY INTO THE CHARACTIZATION OF SAID CHARACTERS (sonic and knuckles) CREATING COMPLETLY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS-
OUT THE SAME FUCKING CONCEPT.
which- CONFUSES THE FUCK OUT OF ME.
BEACUSE IF THEY HAVE SCENES THAT ARE NEARLY IDENTICAL TO EACHOTHER- YET HAVE DIFFERENT OUTCOMES-
WHAT IT IS TELLING ME- IS THAT IF ROUGE HAS INTEREST IN KNUCKLES-
SONIC SHOULD HAVE INTREST IN SHADOW.
YET- shadow DIES whiles Rouge LIVES.
Knuckles SAVES someone while Sonic DOESNT.
Rouge is PAIRED up, Sonic ISN'T.

I've been writing this for about 2 hours now (almost 3) and it's driving me crazzyy..
No body Is going to read this, beacuse it's a reblog on a post that isn't mine. Plus it's long.
So I'm just going to say:
I didn't edit this. This is all me just spewing thoughts out like a meat grinder.
I cant copy and paste this anywhere else beacuse phone tumblr is like that. So I cant make a separate post.
I also genuinely think that sonic is to be paired with Amy? Not as a ship, but just beacuse she's the only one left on the arc who doesn't have a pair.
Yet, the problem with that is that she only appears with sonic for a split second while everyone else has a conversation.
Amy's scene already happened with convincing Shadow to help everyone save the earth. She only comes here to ask if Sonic is okay.
Instead of some (which I assumed would happen) moment where Rouge goes "bye Shadow.." beacuse to me she clearly knows him more than Sonic..
It's Sonic who says "sayonara, shadow the hedgehog."
Which is a line Maria said.
Exactly what Maria said.
Maria.
Someone Shadow literally sacrificed his life In the name of. Someone shadow took revenge in the name of. Someone Shadow cried in the name of, whom he protects in the name of, who he lives and loves in the name of.
It just doesn't make sense to me.
Sonic, is supposed to not like Shadow by the end of this, as it's an opposite to Rouge.
But??? That's not the case?
He ends up being the only one on that arc thinking of Shadow.
The only one (that we know) who said "goodbye forever."
So it doesn't make sense to me. Everything is supposed to be this easy, patterned and formulated story where I can pick apart these 4 characters and everything but I can't.

I was thinking that Maria was Amy counterpart. Looking now, I don't think that's the case.
She appears in both scenes of Shadow and Sonic. To remind the both to go back in to the present, where they are now. To move, and stop staring at a window.
There's something about her here that's like the missing puzzle peice I can't describe.
She's this.. lover. The embodiment of love. Love in romance, family, freinds, companions, e.c.t.
Her entire thing was "sonic's girlfreind" yet I seeing how Shadow and Sonic act I wish it wasn't the case.
I cant go out to people and say I truly beilve Sonamy I'd where Segas going with this, and then tell them,"Oh do you remember that time Shadow sacrificed himself to save the world, but then Sonic fell down towards him to try and save him but failed? Then gave the ring (his only momento) to Rouge as he thinks she knows him more than he does, and then stares out the window after telling Rouge that he thinks Shadow is a "brave and heroic hero" and then validated his identity as not only some lifeform or weapon but as a himself, a hedgehog? Then stared out the window reminiscing over Shadow's words of "the ultamite lifeform?" And then in sa2 battle he tells Shadow he believes that Shadow has a heart, multiple times over and over again, validating him throughout his identity crisises and rapidly changing emotional state? Showing that he cares about him and cares about him in a way that no one has done for Shadow besides possible Rouge (but in a different, less open way.) But also Sonamy is the ship Sega likes.
Beacuse no body is going to read a giant block of words jumbled together as I try to explain sonadow.
I'm not an avid Knuxouge shipper (you could probably tell.) But I'm not going to lie, they have something going there that I very much enjoy. There's push and pull kind of relationship, with the playful Rouge and the shy Knuckles, that you don't get with the more open Shadow and Sonic.
(Oh yeah that's another contrast. Shadow and Sonic are more open about how they feel with one another than Rouge and Knuckles are. Is a bit odd but it makes sense seeing as the two are very blunt in how they feel.)
(It almost makes me laugh how you can put these 4 in a room and make so many compare and contrast essays that It would fill up entire boxes. The way they fight and then suddenly are all goo-goo eyed/ crying on the inside at and beacuse of eachother by the end of the story is endearing to say the least.)
This took 3 hours (probably more) to write.
Is is coherent? Fuck no, I spew out words this isn't supposed to be coherent. Figure it out yourself, lol.

still hurting
so this one’s a doozy. i’m just going to start with a disclaimer before anyone gets interested and decides to risk reading if it isnt healthy for them. this story will contain very dark and traumatic descriptions and content concerning sexual violence and rape so if that is something that might be dangerous for you to read or could make you too uncomfortable, please please please do not read this. i will not be offended by anyone who chooses not to read, trust me. i care way too much about all of y’all so just stay safe. i’ll have another fic up tonight that is much lighter.
ok! so now onto all of the nice people that requested this! thank you to the lovely anon who suggested these two prompts, as well as SomedayonBroadway on ao3 that commented on my story ‘hold on’ with an ask for a fic where race gets drugged and this is what i came up with. i also have to give major props to readeatsleeprepeat on ao3 who wrote one of my favorite sprace fics with a similar theme that i just love so all of you should check that out here.
alright well i’ll get on to the fic now, thanks guys:)
“Spot, come on! This might be my chance! His mom runs the casting department for the New York City Ballet, I have to go! Trust me, this date will be completely fake, you know I wouldn’t leave you for anything, let alone this guy, but if it gets me a job, we could finally move out of this shitty place and maybe, I don’t know, take some bigger steps together?” Race was practically begging for Spot to understand, but that really made a difference.
“You’re serious?” He asked shyly, taking Race’s hands with a giddy grin on his face. They had been talking about getting engaged for so long, they had been together for almost five years at that point, but it just wasn’t financially realistic at the time, If this fake-date with some guy Race met in his dance program was the ticket to them eventually being able to get married, then Spot would be happy to give up his boyfriend for the night.
“You promise you’ll be careful?”
“Babe, you don’t have to worry, I swear. If I have any problems, I’ll call you, but he’s harmless. Plus, I only need to do this until I can find out if he can actually get me an audition or not,” Race teased, earning a small chuckle out of his boyfriend.
“Fine, just let me know what’s happening along the way, okay? And tell him you don’t kiss on the first date,” he smirked, capturing the boy’s lips once more before he slipped out the door. “Love you.”
“Love you too,” Race called, stepping into the elevator at the end of the hall and he was gone. Spot closed the door behind him, retreated back to their bedroom, and started working on a paper on his laptop.
He received texts from Race throughout the night, each one bringing a smile to his face as his boyfriend complained about literally everything under the sun.
From Race: he’s wearing cargo shorts save me jesus
From Race: oh my god he just ordered a beer and told the waitress, and I quote, ‘it tastes better on a glass so don’t you dare bring it in the bottle’
From Race: well he bought me a drink so that’s a bonus I guess
From Race: I miss you, this asshole just reminds me of how picky jack is when we all go out
Everything seemed to be going fine with updates every fifteen minutes or so until a little over half an hour passed without a single word.
Spot was sure it was nothing. Besides, he kinda felt bad for the guy knowing Race was basically on his phone the whole time from how often he was texting him, but that quickly disappeared.
From Race: so he just told me he made up the whole thing about his mom just to get me to go out with him
From Race: I’m just going to pretend like I don’t care, go to the bathroom and get the check as soon as I finish my drink. I love you, I’ll be home soon
Spot groaned, running his hands through his hair and closing out the extra real estate tabs on his computer. Oh well, at least they tried.
But then more texts came.
From Race: spot I’m scared I really don’t feel good
From Race: he offered to pay the tab and before I knew it he was shoving me into his car
From Race: baby I’m so scared I can’t move very well I think he’s taking me back to his place
From Race: i’m so sorry sean I’m sorry I love you so much I’m sorry
Spot walked back into their bedroom with a bag of popcorn in his hands, set it down on his desk, and grabbed his phone, opening his texts from Race as his blood ran cold.
No. No, no, no, fuck no.
Not his boy, not Race, never. He choked back tears, grabbed a jacket, his keys, and was running out the door in seconds.
He had no idea where he was going the moment his car pulled out of their building’s parking lot. Still, he drive until he was stopped at an intersection, pulling out his phone and frantically searching for any source that could track Race’s phone.
He found an app, knowing it was linked to his own phone’s account, quickly signed out and began inputting Race’s information. Sadly, the light turned red and he had to stop, taking a few more turns before the traffic started up again and he was finally logged in.
The tracker was slow, probably because Race likely urned his phone off, but he eventually got a location; an apartment almost half an hour in the opposite direction.
At that point he had tears streaming down his cheeks as he gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white, taking as many backstreets and topping off the speed limit for any chance to get their quicker.
Everything felt wrong, it was as if every part of his body was screaming at him to do something, but he couldn’t do it. Still, once he reached the last intersection before the apartment complex, he simply pulled his car over to the side of the road and ran. He ran up the stairs, knowing that there was no way he would wait for an elevator, and he was nearly certain he was about to vomit as he found the room, staring at the slightly-agape door before slamming it open.
The place was just like he imagined, unkempt, sparse, and with an air of what Spot could only describe as hell.
No, he wasn’t scared of this guy. He never got scared of fights.
However he was absolutely terrified of what he might find.
He wanted so badly to just burst through every room until he found his boyfriend, but there were other problems, namely the one standing right in front of him.
“You,” he hissed, charging at the guy who looked utterly perplexed as he turned around. Still, there wasn’t much time for that before an awful cracking sound erupted from his jaw aw Spot made the first blow. The guy went staggering backwards, clutching his face as Spot simply swung from the other side. This tended to be one of the only times being ambidextrous came in handy.
He was just so beside himself that this man thought Race was his to do what he pleased. That he could just take someone like that, but Spot didn’t care what he thought because in minutes he was out cold on his apartment floor and Spot’s bloody knuckles meant absolutely nothing to him.
Instead, he needed to find the one thing that did matter.
And there he was. Spot swung open the closest door to him and that was all it took. There he was. Spot could hardly believe it as his feet carried him to the bed where his beautiful, broken boy laid motionless. His face, though consumed by unconsciousness, was full of terror and the tear tracks dried onto his cheeks only made Spot’s fall harder.
“It’s okay, baby. I’m here now, I got you,” he whimpered, sliding his arms carefully around the boy’s bare body, taking a bedsheet from the bed and deciding not to waste any time trying to redress the boy in his clothes that littered the floor. He thought about taking them with him, but knew there was no way in hell Race would ever put them back on again, so he let them be. However, he did notice the boy’s binder laying on the ground, which he knew he definitely would want as he picked it up, his heart dropping as he held the one long piece of fabric, a massive rip right down the middle.
He left it behind as well, scooping Race up bridal style and holding him tightly to his chest. The process to get him out of that building was nearly impossible as Spot could barely see through his tears.
The thoughts kept running through his head over and over.
I did this.
I let him go.
I wasn’t there when he needed it.
I couldn’t get there in time.
I let someone hurt him.
This bastard just hurt my baby boy and I couldn’t do a thing to stop him.
Spot gently laid Race down in the passenger seat, making sure he was completely covered by the sheet before climbing into the driver’s seat and practically speeding to the hospital. His hand held firmly to his boyfriend’s until he pulled into the emergency loading dock and carried him inside just the same.
It wasn’t hard to get someone to help them, in fact, it only took a minute or two before a couple nurses came rushing in with a bed and took Race from Spot’s arms, despite his initial protest. He knew he had to let go, but no matter who they were, he just…couldn’t stand it.
He followed close behind them throughout the whole process, explaining everything he knew to another nurse as the others frantically hooked him up to all of their systems. Spot could barely watch as he spoke the word he never thought he’d have to, and the nurse looked to the rest of the team.
“I-I’m pretty sure he was…r-raped,” Spot choked out, breaking down as he did, wanting nothing more than to lie down beside his boyfriend and hold him tight and never let go.
The nurse let him be and went to go order a test, but not before asking a few questions about Race’s…body.
“He’s trans, transgender I mean. H-he’s been taking testosterone for a few years now and his d-doctor says the he doesn’t have to w-worry about any, um, fertility or anything anymore,” Spot mumbled as quietly as he could manage, keeping his gaze set on his hands.
“Okay, well Mr. Conlon, don’t worry about a thing, we’re going to make sure he’s healthy and safe and then I’m sure he’ll be okay to go home in no time,” the nurse assured him as Spot nodded, thanking her briefly before curling up into the chair outside the boy’s room and waiting.
Waiting was torture. All he wanted was to see Race. To just hold him and make sure he was safe, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t for so, so long that he could hardly tell how long it had been when a nurse finally came out of the room and told him he could finally come inside. First, though, the nurse told him exactly what had happened, per Spot’s request. He wanted to know as much as possible just in case Race didn’t know. God, that was sickening itself just to think about.
He told Spot the drugs that were being flushed out of his system, and how the man must have used a combination of two different sleep supplements, not meant to be taken together, and that was why he would have to stay overnight, much to Spot’s dismay. Still, he thanked the nurse and hesitantly made his way into the room.
“Tony?” He hadn’t meant for his voice to sound so scared as he watched the boy on the bed look up at him with tired, terrified eyes.
He looked so small. Just the mere sight of him there was enough to shatter his heart into millions of pieces.
Race just curled in on himself and let out a painful sob as Spot ran to his side, sitting right beside him.
“Baby, I’m so sorry,” he cried, wanting nothing more than to just hold him until they could pretend their world wasn’t falling apart, but he wasn’t sure in Race would even want to be touched, let alone without him asking first. “I’m so, so sorry, ‘Tonio.”
Race just trembled as he curled the thin bedsheets around him as far as possible.
“Can I touch you, sweetheart? I promise I won’t hurt you, I would never,” Spot continued, pleading in his face that Race knew.
He felt his face unable to hold back a smile as the other nodded rapidly and Spot curled up to him tightly. His shaking body slowed slightly with Spot wrapped around him, his strong arms holding him tightly against his chest. Soft kisses were pressed to his neck and shoulders, each one easing Race a tiny bit more.
“I-I’m s-sorry,” Race whimpered before bursting into tears. Spot froze, sitting up so he could see the boy’s face properly. He shakily reached up to cup his cheeks, gently brushing away the tears as they fell.
“No, no, no, baby you don’t have anything to be sorry for, okay? This isn’t your fault, T. You did nothing wrong,” Spot spoke softly, repeating similar renditions of the phrases over and over until Race seemed to actually believe him.
“B-but, I’m broken, Spotty. I…I want to be okay, but I-I’m not! I just can’t do it! I-I’m not okay!” Race’s sobs were like a stab to Spot’s heart as he wrapped his arms around the boy, letting him cry into his shoulder.
“Hey, listen to me and know that I would never lie to you, okay?” He started, feeling Race nod into his shoulder. “There is nothing wrong with you. You’re still the beautiful, hilarious, dumbass I fell in love with and the same boy I will always be in love with. No matter what, I’m here forever, okay? I’m never letting you go as long as you’ll have me.”

Usually when the bank decides to repossess your house due to debt, you're not given the option to turn it into an item shop to directly pay it off. Young Recette and Tear, the loan shark fairy, team up to sell items to townsfolk and adventurers while slowly chipping away at the debt each week. Meet the quota for the week and you can stay in business. Fail and Recette loses her house for real! But it's okay if you lose--the game will punt you back to Day 2 with all currently-held items and upgrades but no money for you to try again.

Gameplay is split into three parts: You can explore town and manage your shop, you can sell items to customers, and you can hire an adventurer to tackle a dungeon to find items and hopefully not die in the process. There's also a time management aspect to the game. Each day is divided into four wedges and certain actions eat up time. Leaving the shop and coming right back is free, but visiting the locales in town and coming back takes one wedge, while going to the Adventurer's Guild to explore a dungeon takes two. At the end of the day, your items sold, items bought, items found, and money made are counted up and you're given a rating and the next day starts.
There are six areas in town apart from your shop: The Town Square, Chapel, and Bar will occasionally glow indicating there's an event there. Usually these are small story bits where Recette and/or Tear interact with a townsperson. The Market lets you buy 'everyday' items like food, books, and shoes, and you can eventually buy shop customizations like new wallpaper or flooring that affects your store atmosphere, which in turn affects what customers enter your shop. The Merchant's Guild sells mostly weapons and armor for adventurers, and you can use Fusion to combine items into more effective or more valuable forms. You thankfully don't need to find recipes but unknown components will stay a mystery until you find or buy the right item.
The monsters are prerendered 3D sprites but at least one boss is an actual 3D model. They really stand out from the spritework that compose the heroes.
The Adventurer's Guild is where all the dungeon crawling happens. While Recette and Tear are present, they're functionally ghosts since they can't interact with the monsters or be hurt by them and you instead control the hired adventurer directly. Pay a fee and they're yours for the trek until they get killed or until you decide to leave. Exploration is pretty Zelda-like and the first adventurer you get plays almost like Link does even! Maps are randomly put together and there are enemies scattered about as well as chests, traps, and the exit to the next floor. Every few floors you face a boss and are given the option to press on or exit. You have a small carrying capacity but this is where many Fusion components are found, but if your adventurer falls, you're only able to take back one item at all as a consolation prize. There are several hireables but they're not handed to you.
Set up items in your shop and open up and people will start coming in. It's time to haggle! People will come to you with an item on display and you have to give them the price. Instead of putting price tags on everything as you display them, you instead set the price right when someone offers to buy it. You're given the item's base price to start and you adjust the numbers, also being told at what percentage of the base price you're selling it at. Obviously you want to sell for more than 100% of the item's value, but you don't want to set it too high since everyone has a general idea of an item's value and also only so much money on-hand. You're given two chances to sell an item before the customer gives up, unless your first quote was outright offensive. The game doesn't really give you an idea how many people will try to buy something each time you open, but at the end of this phase, you return to store prep and can hit the town or open right back up.

Recette has her own EXP bar. Selling items grants a small amount of EXP regardless, but selling items on the first try to consecutive customers grants a chain bonus, and there’s another bonus for getting close and very close to what the customer thinks the item’s actually worth. Leveling up unlocks content like having customers sell items to you, or lets you use bought customizations for tables and walls and the floor, as well as expanding the bag space for adventuring or letting you bring back slightly more items if you fail there.
There are also small events that are displayed at the top of the screen during the store prep phase that change the value of items or notify you about a rising interest in a certain category. For example, the harvest can be a failure and that sends the price of all food-class items up and their names turn red/pink. It costs more for you to buy these items but you can charge a lot more for them. Or the opposite happens and the value of armor goes down for example, then all armor-class items will have blue names and you buy/sell them for less. I didn't have this happen but if you really flooded the market with a single type of item, you could get its price to crash and turn their names black, tanking the value hard. Yikes.

There are these events in the dungeons too, like enemies dealing double damage, you gaining double EXP, and so on. These only apply for the current floor and not every floor triggers a modifier.
So this is a cutesy shopkeeping game cross dungeon crawler. Why am I not recommending it? I just didn't really enjoy it. Yeah it's cute and it's charming but I didn't have fun on the ride. I haven't really played a game like it but it still didn't do much for me. Buying and selling items to customers isn't really exciting. I wound up sticking with selling at around 120% and buying at 70% and that worked for the most part. Dungeon crawling was all right but it's kinda basic, and it had its own share of headaches. Like Recette constantly asking if you're okay when you get hurt, even if it was a minor loss of HP. It doesn't happen every time you get hurt but you'll be hearing the same two lines a lot and that really grated my nerves.
At least the localization is done really well.
Equipping adventurers is kinda weird too. You can take items with you to equip when you arrive, but then the items the adventurer was wearing already are stuck in your inventory and because they're just borrowing your better gear, you can't dump their possessions. You instead have to set up your store to attract the adventurer, place items you hope they look at, and hope that someone else doesn't buy it before they do. If not, well, you're not going to be carrying as much out of the dungeon. Not a big issue for most but you're kinda supposed to bring back as many valuable items given the time cost for dungeoning. You don't find money in there, and the quality of items seems to vary quite a bit. Enemies drop food and Fusion material, but some recipes call for a ridiculous number of materials and the result may not even be worth the time spent. You could end up with a really valuable item...only for nobody to buy it even if it's in your showcase.
A lot of the game's story is locked in the dungeons as are all of the other adventurers, so if you're trying to play efficiently, you're not going to see most of it. From what I looked up, there's not a sweeping epic tale, but you'd never know it unless you spent time you may not be able to afford smacking monsters around and looting chests.
I didn't really like that the game seems built around the idea of the extra loops if you fail to make a payment. There are some people who have finished all 35 days without game overing once, but then you have to play really efficiently, like not visiting the dungeon when you instead could be just selling more stuff you bought before, or never watching the little scenes in town because you could just be selling. Some of the items that alter your store atmosphere are extremely expensive and you're never told in what way they change the atmosphere--the same way you're not told how items influence it either. I hope you like saving and loading. Or just looking at a guide.

So after setting up a 100+ plugin modlist for Raka, I started their official Skyrim SE run with SkygerfalI. This is really long. Like, really really long. And it’s packed with spoilers, so my fingers are crossed that the cut works on mobile because otherwise I am so, SO sorry to mobile users.

What a hell of a mod. It was so much easier to swallow than Daggerfall proper, I’ll give it that! For one, the 3D map in Daggerfall drives me batty. I can’t read it at all, and the samey graphics in every dungeon make them really hard to navigate. For another, Daggerfall notably averts the “take your time” trope where players are allowed to fuck off and do whatever they want while the main quest stays politely paused in the background - almost every single quest is timed, and exceeding the time limit is an automatic fail. It’s possible to lock yourself out of the main quest this way.
Thankfully, the Skygerfall mod recreates all the main quest dungeons with a significantly more helpful Skyrim-style local map. The mod page describes the dungeons as hand crafted, and... well, I’d personally describe it as LOVINGLY put together. The attention to detail is exquisite, and it absolutely feels like a recreation of the dungeons. In fact, it’s so carefully and thoroughly remade that for the most part, the original walkthroughs on UESP came in handy for the few places I got stuck (ahem... Direnni Tower). There’s so many twisting corridors, right angles, and those big huge pyramid-esque centerpieces. My unabashed favorites are the little diagonal rooms hidden within other small rooms, tucked into corners in and of themselves. My own playthrough of Daggerfall made me look forward to those spaces as good places to rest or find loot.
There is not much going on outside the cities or dungeons though! Since it was, for the most part, a single dev putting the whole thing together in their spare time, it’s just the main quest. Even the main towns are largely empty, save for tavern owners (who act as general good merchants), a blacksmith in Daggerfall proper, and any NPCs directly related to the main questline. Ironically, Scourg Barrow is one of the most populated places in the entire game, if only by volume of nonhostile NPCs! The palaces also have merchants and guards around, and there’s a... cheerful little kid over at Wayrest who would love to meet your Agent.
That means no questlines for any of the side factions, very few extra merchants to buy your high volume of crap (though you wont actually need more than one or two at a time), no side dungeons to explore, and nothing in the landscape between the map markers. There’s not even any generic NPCs to populate the towns, and almost no interiors.
Still, it’s entirely worth playing, if you want the basic runthrough of Daggerfall’s main quest in a familiar, modern engine. Particular props goes to some of the scenery and levels. Where there’s very little going on outside of your quest targets, the places that have been built are stunning. Shedungent’s exterior in specific enchanted me, looking exactly like a medieval castle with plenty of nooks and crannies to poke into (though no loot, unfortunately... not that I need any extra with how much garbage I haul out of those dungeons). Another particular detail that I loved were... pigs, actually. I loved the pigs. There’s a few dungeons that contain pigs, which existed in Daggerfall.
I love them. They’re darling.
I dunno, the fact that Oracus0 put so much time and effort into making sure that Skygerfall was a true to the original as possible, down to the animals passively hanging out, really brought me into it. Sure, I wish there weren’t giant scorpions in any game ever, but I can also appreciate that since they were in the original, they were there in Skygerfall (and that they dropped a Raka certified safe alchemical ingredient). And who doesn’t get excited when they see the loot pile model tucked behind a locked door?
I also ADORED - spoiler alert - Aetherius, which turned the game into a full-fledged puzzle platformer. Note to anybody playing through the Room of Fire? You can and will fall off if you’re not careful! But the scenery there is also gorgeous, with a stunning backdrop of swirling stars and galaxies, hellfire, and a wonderfully dapper Sheogorath (whose voice actor does a great job, by the way, of holding true to Sheogorath’s canon voice).
Bonus points for having (and I must emphasize) FULL VOICE ACTING. Every NPC available in the game has a voice. All of the custom NPCs have custom voice acting, and every voice actor did a real bang up job. There wasn’t a single character I encountered whose voice didn’t match them.
It’s also way more... cartoony? Than Skyrim, and it shows a lot in places where custom and vanilla 3D assets were used right next to each other. There’s a lot of blocky, and almost plastic-y walls, floors, sconces, etc that made some of the rough-and-tumble stuff stick out, but it’s not actually enough to take you out of the game unless you’re a really picky bastard imo. It works really well for being a faithful recreation of Daggerfall, which looked like... well. This:
I had a habit of taking pictures of any cool animals I saw in Daggerfall, especially if I haven’t seen them in TES before. Speaking of this awesome camel picture, not to fear if you’re worried about hauling all your crap out of the dungeons like I am (my partner has a hard time watching me play Skyrim with the way I lug out everything that isn’t nailed down to hawk later)...

It works exactly like a horse - hop on and it’ll help you bounce between map markers, even if you’re overencumbered by several hundred pounds of loose swords, gemstones, potions, and your enemies’ underwear. It looks AMAZING, and though you kind of clip through his hump a little bit, it’s again not really an issue unless you’re overtly picky.
The only thing I absolutely cannot stand is... mythril.
Mythril in this mod is... blue. The armor is gray, but the weapons and shield are blue. Not a silver blue or a dark slate blue in the way you’d expect from something metallic. No, I’m talking about Hawaiian Punch Blue Typhoon, I’m talking blue raspberry Airheads, I’m talking about Lapis lazuli from Minecraft and/or Steven Universe, Cornflower Blue Crayola, “her cerulean orbs” fuckin BLUE. That was the ONLY thing that really stuck in my craw. Raka is an archer, but in the event of an emergency they dual-wield daggers and for a period the best one I had on hand aside from the ebony dagger was mythril and I hated it. I resented it. Every time Raka had to get into close quarters I grumbled with distaste as soon as that goddamn Manic Panic deep dream knife popped out on my screen. I replaced it with adamantium as soon as I was able to.
Everything else was copacetic! As with the set dressing, a lot of the custom armor and weapons were kind of cartoony and might stick out in Skyrim proper, but they’re pretty charming in that way. If for no other reason than collection purposes, I took one of everything with me to Skyrim at the end of the questline with the intent to maybe display it in one of Raka’s player homes. Especially the adamantium, which out of everything fits in the best with vanilla Skyrim’s assets (as far as I can tell, don’t quote me on that, please!).
Again, it’s a very lovingly made tribute to the original game, with a lot of time and effort put into it. A lot of modder resources were used in order to achieve this end, and what an end it is. For all of the places where there might be criticism, it’s still a fantastic piece of work that deserves a lot of praise and appreciation, especially since it was largely a single dev working and learning by themselves to put it together. It’s still hours of content to work through, having taken me about 4 days to get through via my playstyle, even when it primarily involved jumping between map markers and delving into dungeons. God only knows I’d have never gotten to the actual main quest of Daggerfall in the original engine, and likely not even in Daggerfall Unity, as I was too busy messing around, getting headaches from the procedurally generated dungeons, and trying to climb the ranks of the Mage’s Guild and Thieves Guild. Not to say that that isn’t a fun and completely valid way to play the game. But Skygerfall allowed me to play through the actual main quest, kept me engaged with voiced characters and a streamlined series of events, and a thorough and faithful recreation.
A lot of people mentioned wanting more stuff between the towns and cities currently in the mod, but personally, going forward, I’d love to see what already exists be expanded. I’d love to see more shop interiors, some generic NPCs to chat with or ask about rumors from (or even just to fill out the space! I’m not picky!), and maybe some basic structure for some of the guilds.
That being said, it’s still a complete mod in and of itself. It has all the components anyone could reasonably ask for. It has its dungeons, it has its armors and weapons, it has custom spells, potions, and ingredients. It makes use of monsters from the Mihail mods, populating the underground with lots of scary and lore-appropriate foes to fight. It has very little to explore outside of that, but still offers a LOT, and I was able to enjoy the main quest of Daggerfall in a way that was comfortable and easily playable for myself, which is more than can be said for the clunky DOS the original game is built in. I would not be mad if Oracus0 decided to close it up, call it good, support bugs for a while, and moved on. They’ve done plenty in the way of Skygerfall, and though I’d love to see more I’m also incredibly happy with what I got! I’m pleased as punch, got to roleplay my little idiot moron bosmer in their original context, and then was able to seamlessly integrate them into the world of Skyrim (via Live Another Life, which is supported by Skygerfall) to enjoy the rest of their modlist. I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you want to get a feel for Daggerfall with some of the comfort and convenience of a better engine and less stingy limitations.
