Valkyrae (Rae) x Reader (Gender Neutral) ft. Corpse Husband
Warnings: None
Genre: FLUFF, Humor, RPF (Real Person Fic)
Summary: In the most desperate of times, we may or may not be used to hearing the phrase ‘Beggers can’t be choosers’ which is exactly why Y/N’s found themself asking the most hopeless of cases when it comes to love and romance - Corpse, for help.
Requested by Xara. Hi darling! Thank you so much for this wonderful request you’ve sent me - I love writing for Rae (excuse my bi excitement, I’m just a HUGE simp) and I can’t thank you enough for giving me the opportunity to do so. Sorry it’s been two months since you requested this but here it finally is and I hope it makes up for the wait. Love, Vy ❤
“Corpse, I’m in desperate need for help.“ I don’t even bother with a friendly or even polite greeting. Being best friends for as long as we have, Corpse and I excluded the politeness that comes with phone calls a long time ago, especially when calling with an emergency. Though, let’s be honest, if I’m calling him on the phone and not on video chat like I usually do, it is an emergency.
“Given that you’re asking me, I can imagine how desperate you are.“ He has the audacity to laugh in response, causing me to roll my eyes.
Now, don’t get the wrong idea - I love Corpse with all my heart. Him and I have been through A LOT together considering we know each other since we were teenagers. However, there are some instances in life when he simply doesn’t get me. Not that he doesn’t try to, he does and does so very hard, but he rarely succeeds. Trying is what matters, of course. Given that he is my only close friend, I can only ever turn to him with my problems though I try my best not to bother him too much, but when things get REALLY tough, I can’t help but go and vent to him. Luckily, he’s always been very understanding, but it may be because he feels like he owes me for all the times he has turned to me with his problems. I’ve tried to explain that he shouldn’t feel such a way, but that’s rather hypocritical of me cause I feel the same way.
Alright, enough digressing, back on track!
“Desperate doesn’t even begin to summarize how I feel.“ I sigh, plopping down on the couch in my living room, kicking my feet up on the coffee table as I cover my eyes with my hand. “Brutally miserable is, I think, the correct term to use here.“
I hear Corpse let out a quiet ‘oof’, one I think he hoped I wouldn’t hear. “And what led you to finally give in and ask for help, not that I can offer you much?”
I can’t help but snort at that, a snort that serves as a replacement to slapping myself across the face. “Rae texted me yesterday asking if I’d like to play Minecraft with her and I took THREE HOURS to respond! Not on purpose, I just couldn’t think of something good to say!” I know I sound like a whiney kid, but I think I’ve passed that threshold LONG ago. Of course, this whiney kid version of me only surfaces around Corpse and Corpse only. No one else is allowed to see me like this or that would legit be the end of any sort of pride I may have left in me.
“You mean you couldn’t choose between ‘Sure, I’d like that!’ and ‘Of course, I’d love to!’? Please say yes.“ Corpse already sounds disappointed and he hasn’t even heard the worst of it yet.
“No and sit tight, it gets worse. I...“
He cuts me off, “Wait, no, don’t say it. Let me guess - you turned her down? Keep in mind if you say yes I’m hanging up on you.”
I remain silent, pinching the bridge of me nose and cringing as hard as my facial muscles are willing to allow. I can’t say yes, not cause he’ll hang up but because admitting it makes it more real, and the more real it is the more depressed it’ll make me and I will go back to being a self-deprecating mess that refuses to be productive or properly functioning - aka ‘Whiney Kid Maximum’.
“I’m hanging up.“ Corpse says after waiting five seconds for my response that only comes in the form of dead silence which is more than enough of an answer in and of itself.
“No, please don’t!“ I squeak out despite my agony, “I’ll never break the cycle if you don’t help me, Corpse! I’m a hopeless case!“
“You’re a hopeless case with or without me, Y/N.“ He states, angering me ever so slightly. “Not only cause you really are, but because I have nothing useful to offer you. Not even a single advice. Even if I did, giving it to you would by hypocritical when considered how bad I am on this field myself. Hell, the very person you’re head over heels for is my personal matchmaker. If anything, you should be asking her how to swoon her...“ He pauses.
So does my brain.
For a second we’re both quiet, the silence on the line suggesting big plans are being developed - well, not on my end but still.
“Now there’s an idea...“ He mutters more to himself than to me.
“No!“ I shriek fearfully, “Please, if you love me even the tiniest bit, Corpse, don’t put me in a situation where I have to be alone with Rae! Not IRL not in a Discord call - not in ANYTHING. I close up and end up seeming unfriendly and rude because of my inability to talk to her like a normal human being! I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I just can’t do it! So please don’t make me.“
I maybe can’t read minds, but hell if I can’t at least have a rough guess of what’s on my best friend’s mind - I know he’s already scheming and coming up with odd solutions to my problem - some of which will cause me more problems but let’s not even mention those. That being said, I need to prevent him from actually carrying out any of his absurd schemes, otherwise it’s game over for me.
“Hmm, ok fine, but only cause I wanna spare you your own awkwardness. Consider it charity.“ He sighs, the disappointment even more evident now.
I sigh too, but I do so in defeated relief. It’s bittersweet, to be honest. “Thank you.”
“Don’t.“ He says sharply, “Don’t thank me. It’ll make me feel like I’m encouraging your behavior.“
Well, screw my feelings, I guess. I’m left on this battlefield alone, aren’t I?
Corpse hanging up the call confirms that I am, indeed, alone.
                                                             *  *  *
“Hello?“
“Are you still in bed, for the love of God? It’s noon!“ Not only did he have the audacity to wake me up with his phone call, but now he has the audacity to judge me on my sleeping habits as well. Some darn nerve he has.
“What do you want, Corpse?“ I grumble out, groggy and now grumpy too. The last thing I need is the only person I can turn to turning on me. Especially not now. I don’t need his or anybody else’s judgement of me or my life, it’ll hurt too much.
“I want to know how long you haven’t showered, Y/N.“ He barks back, causing me to roll my eyes. “And when’s the last time you actually ate something healthy and nutritious and not just greasy takeout?”
“I showered last night!“ I straighten up and frown, feeling offended despite his questions being justifiable. I think that’s exactly why I’m pissed off, to be honest - he knows me and my habits too well. “And you’re just being hypocritical on the eating part!“
“Whatever.“ He mutters, allowing me to feel at least a tiny sense of victory for having proven him wrong, “Get your ass up and come play Minecraft with me, you need to be cheered up asap.“ He continues, much to my dismay. “And don’t even think about saying ‘no’. If you do, just remember, I have your address and a strong will to kick your ass into shape.“
“Into shape? We’re going to the gym or something?“ I’m honestly confused and intrigued now. Maybe the gym isn’t such a bad idea, I’m sure I could become really good friends with the punching bag.
Corpse sighs exasperatedly in a way I can basically hear him roll his eyes as well, “Not that kind of shape, Y/N. Just get on Discord, seriously, I’m worried about you.“
That sentence strikes a nerve. Something about that genuine concern in his voice reminds me that I still need to move on from focusing so strongly on just my failures, no matter how big or small, and keep pushing forward, if not for myself then for the people who care about me. For Corpse especially, seeing as how he’s sort of been my babysitter ever since my feelings towards Rae started to consume me whole and suffocate me. I don’t know how or when it happened, in fact I can best describe it as the Titanic: I was doing ok and then instead of hitting an iceberg the iceberg of feelings hit me and I started sinking. Corpse was there to offer me a hand to help me keep at least my head above the surface. He can’t pull me out of the water but he’s not willing to let go either. I’m afraid holding on like that will tire him out to the point of letting go of me completely, but I’m afraid of sinking too. You see my dilemma here, no?
“Ok, give me twenty minutes.“
I would have probably continued sleeping or just chilled on social media, refusing to get out of bed for at least another hour, but the debt I feel towards Corpse is stronger than the desire to be a slob so I motivate myself with every power my fragile mind can fish out of the void and push the covers off me, shivering at the drastic change in temperature around my body now that I’m exposed to the rather cool air in my room, my pajamas hopeless at providing me with any warmth.
Twenty minutes later sharp, I’m seated at my desk, in front of my computer with my headphones on, taking one last encouraging breath before entering the call where Corpse is waiting for me.
“Yo.“ I greet him half-heartedly, drawing invisible abstract patterns on my desk with my finger as if I’m avoiding eye contact with him IRL.
“Glad to see you haven’t lost your sense of punctuality at least.“ He chuckles, sounding a lot more pleasant and a lot more like my friend Corpse and less like sergeant Corpse Husband who was speaking with me on the phone earlier.
“Very funny.“ I murmur in my now common brooding manner, “Anyway, enough about me, how are you doing? Anything interesting happen since we last spoke?“
“You mean in the past ten hours? No, nothing interesting apart from that I managed to catch a few z’s.“ He replies as I join the Minecraft server, managing to get a smile out of me.
“Hey, that’s nice to hear! Good for you, Corpsie.“ I say, honestly proud and happy for him.
“Yeah, and just so you’re not calling me hypocritical on the topic of eating, I’m currently cooking myself lunch.“ He points out, now just straight up peacocking, “On that note, I got a pot on the stove so you’ll have to excuse me for a sec.“
“Please go. Don’t set your apartment on fire the first time you cook” I snicker, leaning back in my chair and fetch my phone to kill the time while he’s gone to tend to whatever attempt at a meal he has prepping in his kitchen. I feel bad for his stomach, and his kitchen, already.
“Corpse? Hi!“
Oh no. No, no, no, no, no - tell me that was an auditory hallucination and I didn’t actually hear that just now! TELL ME!
“Rae?“ I blurt out, almost falling backwards out of my chair, eyes wide, jaw hanging slightly.
Just then I get a text from Corpse:
Consider me dead and carry the convo. I know you’ve got this, Y/N
Oh that prick is gonna get it!
“Y/N? Hi! Sorry, Corpse didn’t mention you’d be playing with us, but it’s so nice to be hearing from you! It feels like it’s been forever.“ Rae replies, cheery and enthusiastic as ever, just like the absolute sweetheart she is.
With Corpse absent from his position, without his metaphorical hand holding mine, I’m metaphorically sinking and drowning. Maybe the drowning part isn’t so metaphorical after all, considering I actually am drowning in all the thoughts produced by my mind at the moment. A mind that’s going completely haywire, might I add.
“Hehe, well, funny thing, he didn’t tell me you’d be playing with us either.“ I chuckle anxiously, already breaking out in a nervous sweat. I solemnly promise to kill Corpse first chance I get, that way he’ll at least be dead for real.
“He set us up, huh? What’s his game, where even is he?“ Rae asks, properly confused as she should be.
All on-point questions, hun. And I can’t answer any of them logically.
“Um, you know, he’s off doing...something.“ And there go my conversational skills out the window, I hope they send me a postcard one day.
“Whatever, enough about Mr. Ominous. Tell me, what’s been keeping you busy?“ Oh crap, this is the question I’ve been fearing. Mostly cause I’m not prepared for it. “Actually no, let me rephrase: Why have you been avoiding me recently?“
‘Oh crap’ squared. Tripled.
“Whaaat? Avoiding you? Where’d you get that idea?“ I’m aware of my high pitched voice, but it’s not like I can do much to tone it down. Every part of me is in critical panic mode and rationality has accompanied my aforementioned conversational skills out the window.
“I don’t know, Y/N. Ignoring my texts, leaving me on ‘Seen’ and then declining my offer just to accept the same one coming from Corpse - can’t really blame me for finding it shady.“ She replies, her words making me wince and hide my face in the palms of my hands as though it’ll shield me from Rae’s brutal honesty and forthrightness.
“I’ve been...bad at replying to everyone lately, nothing personal, I swear.“ Yeah, that sounded convincing, good gosh-darn job, Y/N!
“Why’s that?“ Something about her tone suggest she knows I’m lying and is just humoring me and my agony. I don’t know if to thank her for it or wish she’d just rip off the band-aid and confront me head-on. In that case I’d have only one of two options: freeze up or spill my guts. Honestly, I don’t know which is worse. “I thought you’d reach out to me, given you’ve found yourself in a pickle.”
I frown, confused and wary like I’m walking on thin ice over a pool of sharks, “Pickle? What pickle?“
“Corpse mentioned you needed dating advice.“ She replies simply as though it should’ve been obvious and as if it’s the most casual, regular and normal thing. Little does she know...
“Um, yeah, I guess you can call it that.“ I murmur sheepishly, my cheeks reddening.
“Who’s the lucky girl?“ She asks, the excitement now replacing the previous suspicion she was fronting, making me nervous as hell.
My heart skips a beat, “How’d you know I’m crushing on a girl?“
“Uh...“ She stumbles over her words, pausing to collect her thoughts and formulate a response, “Corpse told me!“ When the reply finally arrives it’s as high pitched as mine was earlier, suggesting something ain’t right.
I stay quiet, my mind and heart racing which is quicker. My leg is bouncing, my fingers are tapping the keyboard rhythmically as I rack my brain, pushing it to put the pieces of this enigmatic puzzle together, connect the dots.
When it finally does, I’m left with a horrific end-result, a realization that makes me go pale as a ghost, “He told you who said girl is too, didn’t he?” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. I keep the tone low so she doesn’t notice how shaky it is.
It takes her a few seconds to reply, but when she does I kinda wish she hadn’t, “Maybe...”
My first instinct is to excuse myself from the call, pack all my kitchen knives and drive to Corpse’s house but with my limbs having lost any and all feeling in them that is practically impossible. So, I settle for my second instinct which is hiding my face in the palms of my hands as though they can shield me from the immense embarrassment Corpse has set me up for.
“Listen...“ I start, not sure where I wanna go with this, “You don’t have to say anything, I get the hint. No need to bother with a gentle reje-“
“I like you too, Y/N!“ Rae cuts off my rambling with a melodic laugh, “I’m sorry, but you can be very oblivious sometimes, and I just wanted to give you a taste of your own medicine for a bit. Sorry if I freaked you out.“ Judging by her tone, she’s not sorry at all. In fact, she’s one step away from bursting out into laughter.
“Trust me, ‘freaked out’ doesn’t even begin to describe it.“ I sigh, exasperatedly, sinking into my chair alike a deflated balloon. “You and Corpse are gonna pay for that heart attack you led me to the brink of!”
This time, she doesn’t hold back, letting out the laughter she’s been holding back this whole time, “I don’t know how Corpse will do that, but could I pay my dues with a brunch on Friday?”
My eyebrows shoot up, “Miss Valkyrae, is this you asking me out on a date?“ I ask teasingly - aka with more confidence than I feel.
Please say ‘yes’. Please say ‘yes’. Please say ‘yes’.
“I don’t know, what do you think, Y/N?“ She asks, tone just as teasing as mine.
“Hey, I’m not as oblivious as you claim I am!“ I argue light-heartedly, “Does 2PM work for you?“
“Any time works for me.“ Rae replies, a smile blatantly evident in her voice. A smile that unleashes a flock of butterflies in my stomach.
And just like that, I have a date with the girl I’ve had a crush on for the longest time. It happened so fast it’s practically a blurred part in my mind, but one thing I’m sure will be crystal-clearly imbedded in my mind forever is that brunch on Friday. Just then, I get yet another text from Mr. Schemer himself.
That wasn’t so hard now, was it?
Some nerve he has, I swear to God.

Me again! For your 900 event! Let’s go fluff-ish! And we both know I’m going to pick Makki because I am obsessed with the way you write him! And let’s go for the quote “I am a damsel. I’m in distress. I can handle this. Have a nice day.” And whichever format fits better for what you imagine!! Thanks friend! Congrats again!! Can’t wait to read them all!

A plastic bag containing a dozen cans of spaghetti-o’s was wrapped around your palms as you dragged your feet forward, demanding your body to continue without complaint. The unequal weight distribution marked your palms in deep slashes, yet you refused to request help. Squinting at the familiar figure ahead of you, a bitter grunt clawed at your throat.
How the hell was he carrying four times your load with such ease?
Despite the softness of the sound, your boyfriend’s ear twitched, instantly catching notice of your struggle. A teasing grin crept onto his features as he paused and adjusted his stance to face you.
“Oh, miss damsel, do you need a hand?” After transferring the weight of one of the bags to his forearm, a hand was extended in your direction. What boiled the liquid in your veins, however, was the little wiggle he provided to his fingers.
“I am a damsel, who is right now very stressed. And if you keep making fun of me, I’m gonna kick you in the chest.” A low growl accompanied your words, yet instead of receiving a startled response from your boyfriend, you were met with adoration.
“You are so cute when you’re angry rhyming.” The volleyball player faked a sniffle, while artificial tears brewed on demand.
“Just go please.” Lowering your head in defeat, an elongated sigh brought your chest to rise and drop.
“Alright, alright!” After issuing a teasing salute, he returned his attention to the dimly lit pathway.
Rolling your eyes at his antics, you tightened your grip around the plastic handle and inhaled a deep breath, aiming to increase your resolve. Like hell you would be his damsel in distress.
Tumblr media
“Are you sure the cameras are off?”
Only a single light remained on inside of the building, casting an eerie aura onto the empty hallways. Truthfully even if the cameras were functioning, it was unlikely they would register your presence considering the limited lighting. However, as the rational one in the relationship, it was your duty to inquire into whether the basics were covered by the mastermind behind the prank. Hanamaki snickered in response, knowing the sound would have earned him a flick if your hands were not occupied.
“Don’t worry your pretty little head. The broadcasting club bugged the cams for us.” The explanation held a hint of arrogance, prompting your eyelids to fall into slits.
“Don’t talk to me like we’re playing among us. I don’t care if I’m holding things. I will hit you.” Irritation weaved through your features as you readjusted the plastic straps for the sixth time. “Can we just get this over with?” The pain was bordering unbearable, and naturally as your ache increased, your mood plummeted.
“We’re here. The main hallway, miss grumpy pants.” The joy that was once circling inside the male had deflated upon hearing your impatience. Usually you found humour in his mischievous behaviour, yet today it seemed that your tolerance for him was extremely low. After removing the grocery bags snug against his wrists onto the ground, he planned on inquiring into what was on your mind. But before he could begin his interrogation, the sigh of disgust exiting your lips silenced him.
“You picked the one lit hallway for this prank? Really?” Once aligning your bag with his on the floor, you began massaging your palms to restore the blood circulation. With the weight no longer straining your muscles, a little relief was bestowed upon you.
“It was lit on purpose, y/n.” The snappiness of your comment only confirmed his belief that his presence today was merely a nuisance. He didn’t want to think it…but what if you became bored with him? Perhaps you were planning on leaving him tomorrow? Many couples break up on graduation day, could that be it? “Why are you so down today?”
Unaware of the insecurity your actions had planted in the male, you shook off his comments with a wave of your hand. “I’m not down. Let’s just do this and go home.”
There was so much he desired to say, words that hung at the tip of his tongue. Why are you acting like this? Didn’t you want to make memories with him?
Did you not love him anymore?
Instead of vocalizing his concerns, he nodded, then settled onto the ground, removing the can opener from his pocket. While he began opening each of the containers, neither one of you chose to eliminate the silence. The only sounds that echoed down the hallway was from the crunching metal that Hanamaki was tossing aside.
At first you sat beside him, your cheek resting in your palm as you stared at the opened containers lined up ahead. A piece of you knew that your behaviour was uncalled for. This was typical behaviour from him – so why the hell were you so angry?
Well, because of graduation. What would the future look like? Were you truly ready to let go of your youth? And most importantly… would he stay with you?
“Should I start pouring them out?” Guilt clouded over you, commanding that you mend the tension that developed because of your sour remarks. It was your final night as high schoolers; it should be memorable. The last thing you would want is to ruin it with an argument. Leaning forward, the tips of your fingers brushed against his cheek tenderly.
“Yeah. If you want.” Butterflies sprouted to life inside of his stomach at your touch, which he tried to playoff by pursing his lips.
“Mmkay.” As you redirected your attention to the spaghetti-o’s, a thought struck you. If tonight was the last time you would be able to act like children, then you should do it right. At first, you simply got up, spilling the contents of the container over the laminated flooring. Hanamaki observed your movements with a grin soon twitching onto his mouth. However, when you got to the seventh can, instead of adding it to the collection painting the ground, you proceeded closer to your boyfriend.
“Y/n? Baby??” A string of awkward laughter was emitted by the male. The devilish glint in your eyes screamed danger, and Hanamaki Takahiro would not go down without a fight. When you took your last step towards him, he jumped at you, swinging his arms around your knees. The action forced you to fall, though he was quick to soften the blow, sliding an arm to support your back. “You can’t trick the king of pranksters, milady. If you try to take me down, I will take you with me.”
“Amazing. We’re like Romeo and Juliet, but covered in canned pasta.” Tiny pieces of pasta were now stuck against your backside – how wonderful.
“I don’t remember how that one goes. Do they kiss?” The cheeky beam showcased indicated that he was scheming once more. Though, this time you graced him with a receptive laugh.
“No, they don’t. At least not like this.”
“Ehh, lame.” Despite the dejection implicated by his response, he remained cheerful and cunning. Sinking down to close the distance between your face and his, he paused just a few centimetres away from your lips. “Well, I guess now they do. Let’s rewrite the classics, baby.”
Your breath instantly hitched in your throat at his proclamation, as your eyelids fluttered naturally shut. The second his lips found yours, every insecurity melted away from your thoughts. Despite his comical personality, Hanamaki was a serious kisser, his strong mouth guiding yours in an allaying manner. Inside of your chest, your heart completed cartwheels, the thrill of the situation only adding to the pleasure you were currently drowning in. Your fingers subconsciously caressed the back of his neck, as you pushed yourself up, desiring to prolong the exchange for a little longer. The athlete complied contently, keeping you pressed against him.
While you both failed to acknowledge it with words – in your hearts you knew the truth, the type of love you shared wasn’t something one could simply get over. It was the type of love to last forever.
Tumblr media
It took an hour to finish the supposed masterpiece, it would have taken less time if you two did not spend fifteen minutes making snow angels in the pasta. Nevertheless, the task was done. A new memory was created, one that you would certainly cherish for the rest of your life.
“Hey, hold on a second. You have Elsa stuck to you.” The pasta piece was one of many that clung to the male’s hair. As you plucked them out of his hair piece by piece, Hanamaki observed you, studying your movements.
“Well, what can I say? I just attract all the ladies.” A little wiggle was given to his brows, earning him a scoff. “So, did you have fun today, miss damsel? You worry too much for my liking. You need some fun in your life.” In an effort to seize your full attention, he caught your wrist, tugging you closer to him before encompassing an arm around your waist.
A low hum sounded in your throat, indicating your agreement on the subject. But you weren’t about to stop there.
“So, will you stay in my life?”
Astonishment crossed his features as he attempted to mimic the pikachu meme. “That was smooth, I’m proud.” Embarrassment flooded your skin at the compliment, his response made you regret your question immediately. But then he squished you against him and said the words you oh so desperately needed to hear.
“Come here, you little sap. Don’t worry. I was never planning on leaving.”

okay, so all i want is for remus to have a crush on reader or whoever . you can do absolutely anything with this remus just has a really big crush on her and he notices things about her personality and all. fluff because I also want them to like kiss at the end of this all.
Okay here’s the deal anon, I owe you an apology because I’m almost certain that the following story is not what you had in mind. I headcanon that Sirius is gay and Remus is bisexual or pansexual (I also headcanon that Tonks is NB, and I do ship Remadora to a point, but that’s beside the point). So while this might not be exactly what you intended, it’s the story that came to me, so I hope you enjoy!
Please Send Me Prompts My Inbox Is Sad And Empty
Firsts
In the three previous years, James had partnered with Sirius in Herbology and Remus with Peter. This was generally how lesson pairs broke down between the four friends, partly because James and Sirius had so much fun goofing off together and partly because Remus wanted to actually concentrate on the professor during lessons. Fourth year, however, was different.
The first day of classes began like any other. The bright September sun followed the four of them across the grounds into Greenhouse 2 for their first Herbology lesson of term.
“I hope we do Devil’s Snare this year,” Sirius grinned mischievously.
“God, I don’t,” Peter paled, “imagine if it got you and never let go.”
“Don’t worry, Pete,” James beamed as he threw glances to the group of Gryffindor girls ahead of them, also on their way to Herbology, “we’d visit you all the time, bring you biscuits, everything.”
“Fuck off,” grumbled Pete. He’d been in a foul mood all day after their disastrous first Potions lesson where he’d managed to melt his brand-new cauldron.
“Someone’s grumpy!” Sirius declared as they crossed the threshold into Greenhouse 2, “don’t worry, Pete, I’ll tell you a joke to cheer you up. Have you ever heard about the troll, the hag, and the leprechaun who all go into a bar-”
“Remus?”
Remus doubled back, not sorry to miss the rest of Sirius’ joke. Amelia Bones stood a few feet away, wearing a pretty blue hair ribbon to match her Ravenclaw tie. She was twisting her hands nervously over her stomach, and he noticed that she was blushing slightly. The effect the flush had underneath her freckles was quite nice.
“Hi Amelia,” he squeaked, trying to sound more confident than he felt, “what’s up? How was your summer?”
“Erm, not bad,” she smiled sweetly up at him, “I was wondering if…”
“Oi, Remus!” Sirius called across the room, “Pete saved you a seat.” James and Peter snickered behind Sirius, clearly in on the joke to make him look a fool in front of Amelia.
Remus waved them off and turned his attention back to Amelia. “Sorry, ignore them. What were you wondering?”
She went from pink to red at his words. “I was wondering if… you wanted to be my Herbology partner this year.”
Remus blinked. “Oh,” he said, unsure if he understood her properly, “um, yeah, alright. You mean all year?”
She looked stunned at his words. “Oh, yeah, if you wanted…”
“I do,” he said quickly. To his annoyance, he felt his hand fly to his hair, just like James did when he talked to a girl. “Yeah. I’d like that, Amelia.”
She beamed at him. “Great! Well, I guess we should get on with it, then,” and she gestured to a pair of empty chairs.
--
And so they sat together in the Greenhouse. Their conversations were awkward at first. They kept running into long pauses between their feeble attempts at small talk. Remus always kicked himself when he couldn’t decide what to say. He couldn’t tell too many stories, so much of his life had to be kept secret. He couldn’t very well tell her why he looked so tired that one Wednesday after the Full Moon, nor where he had gotten a particularly nasty scar that stretched across the back of his right hand. He was sure she’d get bored of him eventually, but lesson after lesson there she was, smiling from the seat next to him. She didn’t seem to care that he had little to say, because after a few weeks she talked enough for the both of them.
She told him about her mother’s work in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Remus braced himself at this. He knew that the Department was none too friendly towards werewolves, but the topic never came up. She told him that she wanted to head the Department herself someday.
“Yeah?” he grinned, “you want to work in magical law?”
She smiled as she misted a rosebush with a spray bottle. “It’s the only thing I can imagine doing, you know, with everything that’s going on.”
Remus nodded. That was one of the things he liked about Amelia. She had parents in the Ministry. She knew about the war that was surely coming, and she wasn’t afraid. She’d told him once that she’d give her life to protect others if it came to it.
“Sounds like you should have been in Gryffindor,” he’d told her at this.
“Nah,” she laughed, “you lot are too aggressive. Give me a book over a fight any day.”
Remus pretended to look wounded. “Not all of us are like that.”
He stopped his work on the engorged Venus Flytrap in front of him and glanced sideways at her. Her large blue eyes studied him carefully as if she were making up her mind. “No,” she almost whispered, “I suppose you’re not, are you?”
--
That night in the Common Room found the boys sitting around the roaring fire. James and Sirius played a game of Exploding Snap while Peter watched, clapping his hands and cheering loudly when one of the players had a particularly impressive move. Remus stared into the fire, the book he had been reading lay forgotten in his lap.
“Moony,” James called, waking Remus from his daydream about Herbology that day, “what’s got your face look all crumpled like that?”
“Isn’t it obvious,” grumbled Sirius, “Bones. Again. Am I wrong?”
Remus was sure his cheeks had turned dark red at this comment. “No.”
Sirius grimaced. “See? Told you.”
James laughed out loud. “Remus? In love? I never thought I’d see the day.”
“Not in love,” Remus argued, trying to regain some of his dignity, “in….like, I suppose.”
“Like...you want to shag her brains out, do you mean?” Peter chuckled.
“Don’t be gross,” Remus tossed his book at Peter’s head, which unfortunately missed. “She’s funny, that’s all.”
“Funny?” Said Sirius incredulously, “I’ve never heard her be funny.”
“Have you ever even talked to her?” Remus frowned. He didn’t know why Sirius was being so nasty.
“‘Course I have,” Sirius muttered, “she seems boring if you ask me.”
“Well, good thing no one asked you, then,” Remus snapped. He wasn’t interested in dealing with one of Sirius’ moods today. Amelia was a nice girl. She had a good heart and she cared about the things Remus cared about. Sirius was just jealous for whatever reason.
Sirius jumped to his feet. “Well, if you’re going to blab on about her all night, I’m going to bed.”
Remus rolled his eyes. “What, and deprive us of your pleasant company?”
Sirius glared at him, then stomped off up the stairs.
James stared after his friend. “What was that about?”
“No idea,” Remus gestured to Peter for his book back, then went back to pretending to read in front of the fire. Really, if Sirius had a problem with Amelia, who cared.
But he did care.
--
The ground had frozen solid already, a sure sign that winter approached. Amelia had insisted that they study for their Herbology exam down by the black lake. He wasn’t sure why they had to be outside, but she’d lit a fire that floated several inches above the blanket she laid out for them which provided a buffer of warmth against the brisk wind.
“Name the Kingdom, Order, and Family of Crataegus, give its common name, and list its magical properties,” Amelia recited from her textbook.
Remus screwed up his face in concentration.
“Let’s see...Crataegus, also known as Hawthorn, Kingdom is Plantae, Order is Rosales, and Family is Rosaceae. In ancient times Muggles believed the Hawhotrn had magical properties of rebirth and fertility, and Wizards use its elements in draughts to strengthen the heart,” He glanced at Amelia, “how’d I do?”
“Brilliant,” she beamed, snapping her book shut. She stretched her legs so that her shoeless feet reached towards the Black Lake. “Let’s take a break, I’m exhausted.”
“Up all night reading, were you?” he teased.
She tried her best not to smile, but the corners of her mouth gave her away. “If you must know… yes. I couldn’t put down our Transfiguration textbook.”
Remus gaped at her. “Oh come on!” he laughed, “there’s being studious, and there’s being a bloody nerd!”
She looked at him in disbelief. “Traitor! I would have thought you, of all people, would understand.” Something changed in her face when she said this. She seemed to grow softer, more earnest. She looked at him as if he were supposed to gain some greater understanding from her words.
Remus laughed nervously. “Well, I like bloody nerds.”
“Yeah?” she whispered. She drew closer to him by the second, her eyes boring into his.
“Yeah,” he breathed. He knew what she wanted from him, and he was pretty sure he wanted it too.
Their lips met across the space between them. Her skin was warm, and her lips moved naturally against his own. It was a nice feeling, and he kissed her back with interest. His stomach swooped when she gently tugged at his bottom lip with her teeth. He lifted a hand to her cheek and rested it there, gently pulling her closer.
--
“You WHAT?”
Remus did not look up from his book. “We kissed. Alright?”
James stared at him open-mouthed. “How!” he howled, like a child who had a toy taken away by a fed-up parent, “how are you the first one to kiss a girl of the four of us? You’re afraid of girls!”
“Apparently not,” Remus grinned despite himself. It was true, he’d never been a flirt. But it seemed that James’ strategy of annoying girls until they liked him hadn’t quite paid off yet.
“And how was it?” Sirius barked across the room from his spot on his four-poster. He still had that strange, hard edge to his voice. He’d been that way for a few weeks now.
Remus shrugged. “It was nice.”
“Just nice?” cried Peter, who looked like he was about to explode, “Come on, we need more than that!”
Remus thought back to the moment down by the lake. “It was...unexpected.”
“Was it everything you’d ever dreamed of?” Sirius drawled in a bored voice.
Remus shot him a dirty look. “And if it was?”
Sirius scoffed. “I doubt it.”
“Look,” Remus said angrily, “I don’t know what your problem is, but I’m sick of this. You’ve been sulking around me for weeks. I don’t know if it’s jealousy, or-”
“Jealous?” Sirius’ eyes flashed with anger, “you think I’m jealous of her?”
Remus faltered. “No,” he stammered, “I meant-”
But Sirius cut him off. “Of course, I didn’t mean,” he took a breath, “I just don’t want you lording it over the rest of us, alright? That you’ve got a girlfriend, or whatever. Us Marauders have more important things to think about.” And with that, Sirius tore the hangings around his bed closed with a huff.
Remus stared at the spot Sirius had been feeling shaken. What had Sirius meant, “you think I’m jealous of her?”
“Let him sleep it off, mate,” James said uneasily, glancing at the closed hangings around his friend’s bed, “he’s just in a mood.”
“Fuck off, James,” Sirius called from out of sight.
James sighed, threw Remus one more apologetic look, then began to get ready for bed.
Remus sat quite still for a moment. Just minutes ago he could think of nothing but Amelia. Now, Sirius filled his brain. They fought so rarely, it was hard to believe that his kiss with Amelia had made Sirius so angry. After a while, Remus realized he was the last boy awake in the dormitory. Confused and upset, he got to his feet and turned out the light.

It takes a pack to raise a pup
“This is bad... What am I going to do?!” The gofer nervously paced around the infirmary, clutching the bitten arm in his hand before turning to face the Janitor “Please tell me that this is just a bad joke!” He pleaded “Please tell me that this is just a mistake...”
“Sorry ta break it to ya Bud.” The janitor lowered his cap down in sympathy. “But I ain’t jokin’ and I ain’t wrong about this: dat ova here is definitely a werewolf bite. I should know, I saw what my table an’ chair legs looked like after my first few full moons.”
As this was a very serious situation, he forced himself to hold back his laughter at the intrusive memory of his wife telling him that her solution to keeping him from turning the furnature into his chew toys was to swat his snout with a rolled up newspaper every time he ignored his bones and squeaky toys in favor of the table legs. This resulted in him letting out a noise that sounded like a cough.
“B-but what about my Ma and Grandpa?! They don’t even know that monster stuff goes down in the studio! How am I supposed to explain to them that every month, I’m going to turn into a blood-thirsty monster!?”
“If ya don’t wanna tell ‘em, they don’t have ta know.” Wally shrugged. “A lotta wolves don’t tell even their closest family members.”
“What if my Ma questions why all my clothes are getting ripped up?! What if Grandpa finds out when he sees me turn for the first- Oh no... WHAT IF I BITE THEM?! WHAT IF I EAT THEM AFTER I TURN?! WALLY, WHAT IF I END UP KILLING THEM?!”
Buddy felt sick to his stomach as he slumped down to the floor, Wally sat down next to him and patted his back.
“Hey Buddy, you’re gonna be fine. Trust me! There’s a ton of werewolves here at dis studio, none of us would mind showin’ ya the ropes or givin’ ya some good advice for dealin’ with this. Who knows, it might even be a little fun ta get a new pup in the pack.”
“Uuuugggggghhhhhhhhh...”
The Janitor’s words and smile didn’t reassure the nervous gofer, if anything, hearing that he and Wally weren’t the only wolves in the studio made Buddy wonder if the monster that bit him last week was one of his own coworkers. As he thought about it, The wiry music director who was in a constant state of irritation seemed like he was a good candidate to be the wolf who bit him...
He would be lying if he said he couldn’t imagine the man sinking those sharp teeth of his into a human being’s flesh.
“Buddy, c’mon, look at me. It’s gonna be okay, I’m not gonna lie to you, changing is always scary the first few times but you don’t have to do it alone. I can rally up the pack if ya need all of us or I can just keep this between you and me, but no matta what happens, I’ve got your back.”
“Thanks Wally...” He sighed as he still dreaded what was to come. “How soon can you get them?”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Ta-daaaaa! Welcome to werewolves not-so-anonymous!”
Wally unfurled the crudely-made banner as Buddy walked into the break room, Susie clapped, Henry smiled and gave a friendly wave, and Lacie looked bored and unamused but gave a thumbs up and a half smile.
The gofer let out a sigh of relief that he didn’t know he was holding in. Wally alone could’ve been an outlier among werewolves but not all of them. He knew most of these people; the voice actress was hands down one of the most infectiously cheerful people he’d ever met, The Head Artist was a patient and kind man who the gofer looked up to as both an artist and a father figure, and while he didn’t know the mechanic very well aside from the facts that she wasn’t the most friendly or social of people, she didn’t seem half bad.
These people weren’t monsters, he wasn’t a monster.
“Alright, I know a some of us here already know each other but others don’t so lets start ourselves off with some introductions. Who’s going first?”
“Okay. Hi, I’m Buddy, I’m the studio’s gofer and I got bitten pretty recently so I’m kinda scared about all of this...”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the day of the full moon, Henry rented a van with the intent to take the werewolf pack to a cabin in the woods so that Buddy’s first transformation would be in a secluded area.
“So how’d your folks take it?” Lacie inquired to break the silence. “They didn’t look happy when we picked you up.”
“They took it better than I expected, I guess?” The gofer sighed “I mean, my ma seemed pretty scared, but she seemed more scared for me than scared of me.”
“Yeah, that tends to happen...” Henry nodded.
“Guys, I have a question”
“Go for it.”
“If Sammy’s not a werewolf, then why is he coming with us? Wont he get turned?”
The music director rolled his eyes and took a very long sip from his coffee, he also wasn’t looking forward to tonight but for a very different reason.
“Nah... Don’t worry.” Lacie laid back and stuck her boots up on the dashboard. “Hell’s Songbird is cursed with something else so he’s immune to lycanthropy.”
Nobody noticed that the man had flinched at Lacie’s statement.
“...Is he basically an unofficial member of the pack?”
Wally and Susie’s eyes lit up at the question and they smiled at each other before answering.
“Yes.”
“Definitely.”
“Absolutely.”
Wally broke down laughing as Susie broke out her stage voice, even Buddy let out a soft chuckle at her dramatic movements.
“The grumpy banjo man is indeed the pack’s loyal brother, not by blood or spirit, but by true love-”
Said grumpy banjo man turned to face the back seat, the regular irritation in his voice gave way to a sarcastic, deadpan tone.
“If you people genuinely think I ‘love’ getting chewed, slobbered on, roughhoused with, pounced on, and ripped apart by a pack of near-mindless wild animals almost every single month, then you’ve probably been huffing too many ink fumes.”
“Yeah, yeah, so bein’ the ‘designated driver’ of da group isn’t always fun... But ya do it ‘cause you looooooooooove us!”
Henry sighed in a mix of annoyance and acceptance in a way that implied he knew exactly what was going to happen next.
“I’m a married man.” Sammy continued to deadpan. “I thought you knew that by now.”
This response only egged Wally on.
“Psssst! He’s not denyin’ it!” The janitor stage-whispered “So it must be true!”
“Shut UP Franks.”
Sammy huffed and crossed his arms, but not denying Wally’s statement, which led to a loop of Wally’s teasing and Sammy’s fruitless attempts to shut the conversation down, which was only ended by reaching their destination.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buddy felt goosebumps as the van pulled up to the cabin and the sun slowly started to dip down.
“Here we are.”
“Finally! I swear, every single car ride I have with that. walking. headache. becomes the longest one I’ve ever endured.”
“Hey!”
The cabin itself probably looked like a much more warm and inviting place during midday, but as the shadows of the trees started to cast down on the humble little abode, it looked almost sinister. Although, that could’ve just been Buddy’s imagination working against him.
He hoped it was just his imagination working against him.
“Fuck, it’s gettin’ dark real fast.” The mechanic remarked as she looked at the sky. “Should we slap the meat on the grill now or just wait after we change and eat it raw?”
“We should wait.” The animator replied. “At this rate, if we try to cook it we’ll change before it’s halfway done.”
Buddy helped carry things into the cabin; a cooler, a couple of blankets, a duffle bag filled with dog toys and bones, they all seemed like reasonable items, but he couldn’t deny he felt something was missing.
“Hey Sammy, you’re looking out for us after we change, right?”
“Unfortunately.”
“So where are the ropes and chains? And isn’t there supposed to be bear traps and tranquilizers or something like them?”
The musician raised an eyebrow at the gofer.
“...Why would we need those?”
“...To tie us up and keep us from killing people?”
Sammy’s Jaw dropped at Buddy’s suggestion.
“Holy fucking shit... kid, you’re not turning into a monster, you’re just becoming a glorified puppy.”
“But you said it yourself, you get ripped up!”
“So?” Sammy scoffed. “That’s just what all dogs do.”
“He’s more of a cat person than a dog person.” Susie called out from the kitchen “Take everything he says about werewolves with a grain of salt.”
“Easy for you to say!” Sammy called back. “You’re not the one who had to cover over ninety-seven miles in different directions to round up a bunch of whimpering wolves because SOMEONE decided to set off a bunch of firecrackers just as the moon rose!”
“Hey!” Wally called out. “I said I was sorry!”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was time.
Like it or not, he was going to become a beast.
He knew the others’ own transformations were happening right now, he heard their bones snapping and cracking, the changing shadows cast on the floor as he dashed to his own room praying that he’d make it in time.
In the madness, he saw a glimpse of what Sammy’s curse was. He wished he didn’t see that, it would’ve so much easier to trust Sammy’s protection if he didn’t know that burden of the musician’s curse was like a werewolf’s curse except the ‘wolf’ part was scratched off and replaced with something else. The chill that ran down his spine when his eyes met the monster’s also didn’t help.
Buddy locked himself in his room, quickly taking off his clothes so they wouldn’t get ripped during the change and wrapping himself up in the provided blankets to keep himself from seeing his own transformation.
His heart pounded against his chest as he heard someone whimpering and scratching at the door on the other side.
“Focus, Buddy...” He tried to reassure himself. “Deep breaths, don’t get scared...”
He highly doubted he’d be lucid for his first full moon, but the idea of losing his mind and becoming a ravenous monster just didn’t sit well with him, So he tried his best to stay ‘awake’.
No matter how hard it was.
The curse started off his own changes with either his skin, his senses, or his mouth. He didn’t know for sure as it felt like all three were happening at once as he spat out a bloody mouthful of his own teeth into his hands and watched fur sprout up all over his arms, the taste and smell of blood in his mouth and on his now paw-like hands, as well as the smells and sounds of everything else in the cabin was overwhelmingly nauseating.
“D-don’t freak out... the others have been through this lots of times... this is completely normal... Stay calm Buddy...”
He tossed aside the teeth and threw himself deeper into the blanket pile in spite of his body’s increasing temperature and new fur coat. The gofer couldn’t tell if the whimpering he heard was coming from the other wolves scratching at the door or from him.
The next thing the curse went after was everything else; muscles, bones, etc.
It was painful, but at the very least it was fast, he didn’t even have the time to whine for mercy before the malevolent force of the werewolf curse stopped. Buddy let out a sigh of relief as he dug himself out of his blanket cocoon.
He looked at the mirror and saw a frightened looking young wolf, his eyes still looked human and his fur seemed to match the color of his hair. While he didn’t like looking at this and calling it his reflection, he couldn’t help but feel a little bit proud of himself. In spite of fear trying to drive him to the same level as a wild animal, he was still him.
Or so he thought as he was startled by the sound of his door unlocking itself and creaking open.
He let out a yipe and started to bare his teeth and growl at the weird beaked creature that poked its head into his territory. The said creature was not impressed in the slightest and simply came into the room.
Buddy growled louder and snapped his jaws at the creature, his ears laid back and his hackles bristling straight up. While the creature did move away from his bite, it was still not impressed. Out of desperation, he lunged at the black-feathered beast, desperately trying to scare it out but the monster looked like it had dealt with this before as it glided out of the way of his attack and picked him up by the scruff of his neck.
The young wolf flailed, bit, clawed, and snapped at the creature. But he could swear that the beast’s only response to Buddy’s last-ditch efforts to keep himself alive were to roll its eyes and toss the wolf out of the room.
And into the line of sight of two other wolves. Both adults, one of them had pitch black fur, the other one had dark gray fur, but both of them had curious almost human-like eyes.
Thankfully, they smelled familiar to him. Even as a human, he could always recognize the smells of cleaning supplies, bacon soup, and ink. As he got a little bit more used to his new senses, while most of the smells and sounds were still new, and there was too much of it, he could at least identify what they were.
The black wolf came closer to him and sniffed his face before licking it. The other wolf pawed the first wolf’s face away from his own. Assuming that this was just some kind of greeting, Buddy sniffed the first wolf’s face and licked him back, the second wolf let out a noise that sounded like an amused snort.
THUNK
A loud noise from the kitchen that came with a new smell made him realize how hungry he was. Assumingly all thinking the same thing, the three wolves dashed into the kitchen to see the toppled-over cooler being raided by two other wolves. The bird like creature was biting and flapping its wings at them, clearly trying to keep them away from the coveted red meats the cooler held.
“STOP. EATING. PLASTIC!” The creature cried out to deaf ears of the pack. “YOU’RE GOING TO GET YOURSELVES SICK! JUST WAIT FOR ME TO UNWRAP THEM FIRST!”
This tyranny would not stand with the wolves, united as a pack, the five starved beasts joined forces against the giant bird-monster that stayed between them and their food.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buddy woke up groaning with a headache, sore muscles, and an upset stomach the next morning.
Last night was a blur to the gofer, like a dream, the most of what happened during the full moon quickly faded from his mind as he woke up. If it wasn’t for the fact he could still see the bird-monster form of the music director looming over him in the cabin’s rafters, he would’ve chalked the whole thing up to just be a bad dream.
“Sammy?” He groaned. “What happened last night?”
“As soon as I opened the door, all of you ran to the fields instead of the woods.” The music director sounded like he was too tired to be irritated. “I tried to steer you back towards the woods because there was a barn over there, but as usual, none of you listened to me.” Okay, maybe he was still a little bit irritated.
“Oh no... Did I eat anything there?”
“No, but you did get your head stuck underneath a fence and whined until I let you out.”
Buddy blushed in embarrassment as he wrapped his blanket tighter around him.
“Don’t beat yourself up about it, everybody does stupid things the first time they change.”
“So how come you didn’t change back?”
“My curse isn’t determined by the moon, it’s determined by... other things. I don’t like talking about it.”
Sammy wrapped himself up in his wings, ending the conversation.
“G’morning.” Wally set down a fizzing glass of water by Buddy, the Janitor looked more exhausted now than he did after a 12-hour deep clean of the studio. “Ya might wanna drink that, it’ll help with the headache.”
“Thanks Wally.”
He smiled as he sipped down the liquid, while the gofer knew that the changes weren’t going to be easy for him to adjust to, at least he had other people who were willing to help him through it.

(TW) Can I get reactions for Kenshin, Ieyasu, and Hideyoshi (or anyone else you want) with an MC who is always really bright and happy around others but, depressed&self h**ms when they are alone? Thankssss xoxo
-Request from @arthotsglasses
Thank you for this ask ^.^! Little message: This is relatable to me and many others, and depression is a bully that causes mental and physical hurting. To those that have depression and self-h*rming tendencies, know you’re not alone and you have so much value as a person <3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Here’s a helpful link with some helpful alternatives that have helped me and others if anybody would want to try these as an alternative, and there’s a lot of lists and ideas from other websites as well that are helpful too :

TW: mentions of depression, s*lf h*rm, su*cidal thoughts
Kenshin: He always noticed that something was troubling MC, even if they did not try to make it obvious. MC was always cheerful around him and the others, being a ray of sunshine to his dark coolness. He noticed MC would keep their sleeves from rolling up, almost like they were terrified of showing their arms. He realized this when it was summer time. MC was sweating and overheating, but when Kenshin asked if they’d like to change in lighter clothing or just even roll up their sleeves, MC quickly shut those ideas down. “Hehe I’m fine. You’re such a worrywart!” MC said with a giggle and smile, but Kenshin wasn’t buying it. When MC almost fainted from the sudden heatwave, Kenshin propped them up, loosening and rolling up their sleeves to cool them down. It was then that Kenshin noticed the many cuts on MC’s arms, some faded while others more fresh. His mind immediately went into panic, adrenaline overload. “Who did this? Who hurt you?” he frantically asked, panicked and enraged that MC could get hurt like this. “I-I did. I’m so sorry. I keep on thinking of everything I do wrong and I don’t want to bother anybody else with my problems. I get so tired of constantly switching between being happy for everybody else but so depressed and self-hating when alone. It’s so hard. I feel like a disappointment” MC’s normally smiley face was welling with tears, sobbing as they explained. Kenshin quickly scooped up MC, eyes wide with fear and sadness. He already lost one person to suicide, he didn’t want someone so dear to him now to harm themselves. “I am so sorry. I failed to protect you. Your wounds are my wounds. Don’t you ever do this again. I can’t bear to see the love of my life hurt and hate themselves.” After tears were spilled by both MC and a few from Kenshin while hugging eachother, they discussed how to help MC. As much as Kenshin would want to lock MC away somewhere where there’s no way MC or anybody else could harm them, he knew that would make things worse and restrict MC’s freedom and desire to connect to their close friends. He would definitely be more observant of MC, being slightly overbearing. If he noticed that MC was starting to feel drained and not feeling up for being cheerful, he’d make an excuse to the others so MC could get some space. Would encourage MC to be honest with their feelings, telling MC to tell him whenever they’re feeling a depressive/harmful episode coming and that it is never a bother and considers it an honor that MC can trust him. Whenever he’s unable to be around MC to comfort/provide company, he makes sure his bunnies are around MC bc he figures they’d calm MC down and distract MC from the urges to self harm. Both Kenshin and MC learn from eachother that they each have mental scars and emotional problems and that is valid, they can lean on and support one another to be the healthiest and feel the best they can be.
Ieyasu: MC was always helping Ieyasu see the bright side of things, making his grumpy pouts turn into a slight smile. MC’s goofy laughs and smiles lit up the room, something he greatly admired about them. However, sometimes MC would have a sad look in their eye, something they’d instantly wipe off and deny if somebody asked. When he got closer to MC, he tried to express concern in his roundabout way, but MC was always able to dodge the question, finding a distraction for him and going away to their room. Unfortunately, when MC was making a hot soup with Ieyasu, they spilled the contents on their lap, burning their legs. Ieyasu immediately went into doctor mode, ordering MC to roll back their kimono cloth so he could put inspect the degree of the burns and assess what he should do to treat it. MC fought him, but finally agreed when Ieyasu looked so earnest and worried at them. When he saw MC’s upper legs, he saw the burns from the soup but he also saw scars and cuts. “How the hell did these happen and how come you never came to me to treat these?” He’s seen self inflicted cuts and internally knew what was going on, but he dreaded the thought of MC doing this. When MC knew they couldn’t lie or smile out of this, they opened up, expressing how frustrated they get at themselves and how they feel like they deserve the harm they give themselves. How MC never wants others to worry about them and did not want Ieyasu, who already had negativity in his life, be burdened by MC’s problems. Ieyasu grabbed onto MC’s shoulders, looking into MC’s eyes with the most hurt gaze they’ve ever seen. “You have never been a burden. And you do not deserve the pain you give yourself. I have seen several crooked, horrible people and you are definitely not one of them. And you don’t have to be cheerful all the time if you don’t want to. I love you for who you are as a human being, not an idealized image. I know I’m not the best at being open with my feelings, but believe me when I say that you are allowed to make mistakes and have faults and be vulnerable. Just please do not hurt yourself over it.” Ieyasu made MC spend the night, treating their leg burns and cuts and also finding calming herbs that can help calm MC’s nerves. He would be more gentle with his words around MC and being more mindful, he’s not the best with words but makes sure that MC knows he’s there for them and wants to do anything he can to help them. Would probably roast anybody into a corner if they so much as say one harmful thing to them. Would go into the library and pull out any books about depression and what can help lessen the symptoms, trying to find any way to physically help. He learns to be more honest with his feelings by reassuring MC that they are capable and lovable. Suggests MC keeps a log tracking their moods and to write their feelings to help. Read somewhere that animals can help, leading him to put MC in charge of taking care of Wasabi because he’s “too busy and Wasabi keeps getting in trouble.”
Hideyoshi: MC always made sure to brighten up the place and work hard to make sure everybody was happy. MC would always lend an ear and encourage Hideyoshi when he was doubting himself or fed up with certain people/things. Hideyoshi always offered to help them, but MC would refuse, saying that he’s already got a lot on his plate and that they’re totally fine. He noticed something was off with MC one day, almost as if MC was pushing a happy front all day to hide something wrong. He decided to drop by with some tea during the night when he heard heavy breathing and sniffling, making him enter quickly to see if something was wrong. What he saw was MC with a knife in their hand, just about to graze into their skin. Hideyoshi dropped his tray, running to MC with wide eyes and roughly grabbing the knife, chucking it across the room. “WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?” he’d harshly ask, scared and confused as to what he saw, unfortunately this just caused MC to cover their face in their hands and start crying with a panic attack, making him soften his gaze and pull MC towards him to rub their back and calm them down to the point they were able to talk. “I’m sorry for doing this. I just keep trying to make everybody happy but I just feel so sad and empty and I don’t know if I want to hurt myself just to feel something or because I am angry at myself or what but I feel like I can’t stop. I didn’t want to bother you with this I’m sorry.” “You have no reason to apologize. I should be the one sorry for not noticing you were in pain. You are so positive and loving towards everybody, but you don’t feel that way about yourself, that seems very unfair. The only thing that bothers me is that I can’t find a way that can magically make you see yourself the way I see you.” “Sounds like something I should be saying to you.” MC sniffled with a small giggle. After a little bit, they talked out how to help communicate their feelings and recover from self harming. He’d be very cautious and a bit overbearing at first, hovering over MC and internally panicking when they were around sharp objects, but after some talks about it he learns to give MC some space when needed while also being supportive. Would look up all he could about depression and helpful things to do, leading him to get herbal teas that have calming properties and also getting ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he can get his hands on in town that looked like it could help MC. Things that could make good stress balls or trinkets to rip/pull/roll around/squish: get ‘em. Journal paper, brush, and ink to either write down their feelings or brush on their own skin: get ‘em. Would suggest MC to write down the good things that happened during the day as well as things they like/make them happy so they don’t just focus on the negatives in life. Would reassure MC that their feelings are valid and that they are still a wonderful human being that he wants to be with and support their healing and growth.

An Unexpected Tagalong (P.4)
    An Unexpected Tagalong:
(Hello! I hope you enjoy the third chapter! I would love to hear what you all think and any constructive criticism is gladly taken. I want to get better! ^-^)
In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. Estella Took loved the comfort of her home. The smell, the sounds. But something was always missing. She was a Took after all. She had the need for adventure in her blood. The stories she has read by her fireplace have twisted her mind and she often daydreamed of adventures of her own. Little did she know that on her 35th birthday, she would get exactly what she always dreamed of.
Main Characters: Estella Took, Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins
TW: None, I don’t think. If I’m wrong please tell me and I will fix it right away!

♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡ When the house grew quiet, Estella grew eerie. Just a moment ago the house was booming with happiness and laughter. Now it was so quiet she could hear her own heartbeat. Boom, boom. It steadily beat against her chest. Estella and her cousin follow the wizard to greet the newcomer. The other dwarves watched from the distance. They all stood as tall as they can. Their chests puffed out proudly. Whoever was waiting beyond the door, the dwarves held to high regard. Estella didn't know it but she held her breath within her lungs. With anticipation building up inside of her, she stands close to Bilbo, a stern grip on his forearm. Bilbo wouldn't admit it to Estella but he was so curious. Deep down he was actually excited. Gandalf slowly opened the door, and there he stood. A dwarf with sharp features. Long black hair. His eyes glanced around the house quickly and when Estella met his her breath hitched. Blue meeting brown. Ocean washing up onto Earth. Time felt so slow in that split second their eyes met. Bilbo stared in awe of this man as well. He wasn't like the other dwarves, though he bared some qualities that were similar to Kili and Fili.
Estella's mouth urged to drop open when the dwarf walked in and talked. His voice gravelly and deep. It was like a symphony. Almost beautiful from words so common. "Gandalf. I thought you said this place would be easy to find." He grumbled. The man was grumpy. He wore it on his face in a scowl-like frown. Estella might've thought that he was just pissed off but soon she would find out that it was his resting face. " I lost my way, twice." He clips off his cloak and drapes it over his arm.
Estella raises a brow. Was the Shire really that complicated? The others seemed to have no trouble. The man glances at the open door behind him. " I wouldn't have found it at all, had it not been for that mark on the door." He says. Bilbo almost looked like he was going into cardiac arrest. "Mark?" He gasped. "There's no mark on that door, it was painted a week ago!" Estella laughs nervously when Bilbo goes to examine his door. She quickly slides between him and his entrance, closing the door with her rear. "Better if you don't look at it, don't you think?"
"There is a mark, I've put it there myself," Gandalf admits, almost quietly. The disapproving look that Bilbo had for Estella quickly turned to the tall wizard. There is an awkward pause before Gandalf continues. "Bilbo Baggins, allow me to introduce the leader of our company, Thorin Oakenshield." Thorin looked over Bilbo. He looked down at him as if he was prey. Bilbo shifted his weight to each foot uncomfortably under Thorin's gaze.
"So, this is the hobbit." Thorin scoffs. He hands his cloak to Kili, retaining eye contact with Bilbo." Tell me, Mr.Baggins, have you done much fighting?"
Bilbo's head slightly tilts and he chuckles as if what Thorin said was a joke, "Pardon me?" He shared a confused look with Estella quickly before turning his attention back to the dwarf.
"Axe or sword, what's your weapon of choice?" The question made Estella wanted to laugh. The image of her Bilbo carrying an axe far too large for him, trying to swing it and ultimately falling on his butt. Thorin begins to circle around Bilbo.
"Well, I do have some skill at conkers, if you must know. But I fail to see why that's relevant."
The second-hand embarrassment spread over Estella. Her cheeks grew pink for Bilbo while he remained absolutely clueless. Thorin shakes his head, " I thought as much. He looks more like a grocer than a burglar." Bilbo scoffs, offended as the other dwarves laugh.
"Now, now!" Estella barks in Bilbo's defence. "Bilbo may not be experienced in the way of a warrior, but if you're looking for a hobbit then Bilbo is the best you'll get!" Bilbo flashed her a horrified look. A tad bit grateful but none-the-less horrified.
The dwarves' laughter died down when Thorin looks past Bilbo and straight at Estella. She stared into his deep blue eyes and could've sworn she was drowning. His stare was so heavy but she stood her ground underneath it. "Who might you be? Mrs.Baggins?" He asks.
"Ugh, no!" She groans. Estella has had to answer that question far too many times tonight. She lets out a sigh, releasing her annoyed feelings along with the exhale. "I am Estella Took. Bilbo's cousin."
Thorin glanced her over, an eyebrow arched. "Greetings." He mumbled. Bilbo gave his cousin a thankful look before going to settle their new guest down in the dining room. A warm plate of food was given to the dwarven prince, and then the discussions were started. The dim lighting was a perfect ambiance for the feeling of the room. While the dwarves talked, Estella and Bilbo stayed toward the back close together, watching and listening to every detail.
"What news from the meeting in Ered Luin? Did they all come?" Balin asks curiously.
Thorin gives the old warrior a nod: "Aye, envoys from all seven kingdoms." The dwarves happily give little cheers.
Dwalin hums, looking intently at his prince, "And what did the dwarves of the Iron Hill say? Is Dain with us?"
Thorin sucks in a breath as if he was scared to reveal what his cousin had said. "They will not come." He finally admits. The entire table of dwarves groans in disappointment. Their expressions express almost sadness that their kin will not assist them. "They say our quest is ours and ours alone."
"So it's true? You really are going on a quest then?" Estella suddenly butts in. She hadn't meant to intrude but her words poured out of her mouth before she could stop them. Thorin looks at the halfling and before he could reply Gandalf coughs quickly. "Bilbo, my dear fellow, could we have some more light?" He asks.
Bilbo, still intrigued by the happening going on in his dining room, clicks out of his little wonderland and nods, "Oh yes, of course." The hobbit quickly goes to retrieve a candle to provide more light to his guests. Once Bilbo leaves the room, Gandalf takes out a worn-out, folded paper from his grey robe. "Far to the East, over ranges and rivers, beyond woodlands and wastelands, lies a single solitary peak," He lays the parchment flat before Thorin. Estella couldn't help to get a closer look at the scroll. A map! She looked over Thorin's shoulder in awe. A real-life map, like from her books! Bilbo swiftly returns with the candle, holding it over Thorin's left shoulder. Both halflings stare at the map, their eyes twinkling in wonder. Gandalf points at an ink mountain upon the parchment. "The Lonely Mountain," Bilbo reads. His voice was low but curiosity was laced in the words. Gloin nods, "Aye! Oin has read the portents, and the portents say: it is time."
"Ravens have been seen flying back to the mountain as it was foretold. When the birds of the old return to Erebor, the reign of the beast will end." Oin confirms.
Bilbo looks around, "I'm sorry... 'beast?'"
"Well that would be a reference to Smaug the terrible," Bofur says, almost a little too cheery. "chiefest and greatest calamity of our age. Airborne fire breather, teeth like razors, claws like meat hooks, extremely fond of precious metals."
"A dragon then?" Estella asks in an excited tone. Bilbo couldn't believe the excited expression Estella wore at the mention of the fire drake. Ori suddenly rises to his feet. "I'm not afraid, I'm up for it. I'll give him a taste of the dwarfish iron right up his jacksy!" He exclaims bravely. Estella couldn't help but grin at the courage of the small dwarf. His friends around him cheer him on until Dori pulls the lad back into his seat.
"The task would be difficult enough with an army behind us, but we number just thirteen," Baline begins. He looks around at his brethren, not exactly in a fond way. "and not thirteen of the best, nor brightest."
The dwarves begin to argue amongst themselves at that. Swearing that they are not dim. Fili hits the table, getting the attention of those around him, "We may be few in number. But we're fighters, all of us! To the last dwarf!"
Kili nods in agreement with his brother. "And you forget we have a wizard in our company, Gandalf will have killed hundreds of dragons in his time." He points out. Gandalf puts his hands up. "Oh, well. No, uh, I...I wouldn't say..." He stutters out.
Dori looks up at the wizard expectantly. "Well, how many then?! Go on, give us a number!"
The dwarves begin to argue once more. Voices growing angrier by the second. "Please... Please!" Bilbo tries to ask. Even Thorin's face was expressing annoyance toward the loud shouts.
Estella huffs at the dwarves. "Excuse me!" She shouts above the yelling. The dwarves grow quiet and look at the young hobbit. "Please, lower your voice. Heated voices will not solve anything." The dwarves mumble to themselves but remain quiet. Thorin gives her a pleased glance, and she bows her head at him as a "you're welcome."
"If we have read these signs, do you not think others will have read them too? Rumors have begun to spread. The dragon Smaug has not been seen for sixty years. Eyes look East to the mountain, assessing, wondering, weighing the risk. Perhaps the vast wealth of our people now lies unprotected," Thorin continues. "Do we sit back while others claim what is rightfully ours? Or do we seize this chance to take back Erebor?" Thorin stands up and for a moment the company was united once more, cheering with their leader.
"You forget the front gate is sealed," Balin reminds them. The cheers die down into silence. "There is no way into the mountain."
Gandalf shakes his head. "That, my dear Balin, is not entirely true." He holds up a key. It was old looking. Sharp edges. Very dwarvish. The hobbits look at it fixedly. It was very new to them.
"How came you by this?" Thorin watches the key the moment Gandalf takes it out.
"It was given to me by your father by Thrain, for safekeeping. It is yours now." Gandalf hands the prince his birthright. Fili, on the other side of the table, smiles widely.
"If there's a key! Then there must be a door!" He exclaims.
Estella chuckles at the dwarves. Sure they might be great warriors, she thought to herself, but they sure aren't the smartest. Bookwise, anyways. Gandalf points to red markings on the map, to which Bilbo and Estella look closely at. "These runes speak of a hidden passage to the lower halls," Gandalf says.
"There's another way in!" Kili happily exclaims.
"Well, if we can find it, but dwarf doors are invisible when closed. The answer lies hidden somewhere in this map, and I do not have the skill to find it, but there are others in Middle-Earth who can. The task I have in mind will require a great deal of stealth, and no small amount of courage. But if we're careful and clever, I believe that it can be done."
"That's why we need a burglar!" Ori says in realization.
Bilbo nods, still a little clueless. "Hmm. And a good one too. An expert, I'd imagine."
"And are you?" Gloin asks. Everyone looks to Bilbo, expecting an answer. Estella looks to him too, scared of what her dear, clueless cousin would say next.
"Am I what?"
"He says he's an expert!" Oin exclaims.
"Me? No! No, No, No! I...I'm not a burglar. I've never stolen a thing in my life."
"Bilbo has always had a good record," Estella admits. "But us hobbit's are very light on their feet! We are very good at sneaking about! If you need a burglar, Bilbo and I would be great for the job," She thinks of their times when they would hide from the Sackville-Bagginses, hoping to the gods that they wouldn't see them. They were pretty good at that. What's a little dragon? Estella semi-regretted what she had said when all eyes were on her now, including Bilbo's. He really wished she wouldn't include him in her lust for adventure. Sure, he shared that want but he refused to admit it.
"What?" She asks.
"We? Who says you were going, lassie?" Dwalin says, staring at her.
Estella turned red. She had not meant to include herself into the conversation... or maybe she did? The young lass always wanted an adventure, so when one showed up for her cousin...
"No offence Lady Took, but Bilbo nor you, are hardly burglar material," Balin says softly.
"Aye, the wild is no place for gentle folk who can neither fight nor fend for themselves. Especially for a young lady like you." Dwalin agrees.
Voices begin to rise again. Dwarves arguing. Upon the yelling and sudden rejection, Estella wanted to cry. Not because she isn't getting what she wanted but because she thought she might've found a way to get out of the Shire. Have a purpose other than reading and baking and eventually dying with a husband she wouldn't have loved and few children. Don't get her wrong! Estella loved families and children but she wanted more to life. She wasn't getting any younger. Bilbo somehow could feel her sadness, radiating off of her. He pulled her close by the shoulder as the dwarves argued louder and louder. "Enough!" Gandalf booms. A grey cloud rolls throughout the room, the lights dimming. His voice was like a crack of thunder forcing the dwarves to finally get quiet once more. "If I say Bilbo Baggins is a burglar, then a burglar he is!"
The two hobbits stared at the wizard, surprised by his outburst. "As Lady Took had said before, hobbits are remarkably light on their feet. In fact, they can pass unseen by most if they choose, and while the dragon is accustomed to the smell of a dwarf, the scent of a hobbit is all but unknown to him, which gives us a distinct advantage. You asked me to find the fourteenth member of this company, and I have chosen Mr.Baggins. There's a lot more to him than appearances suggest. And he's got a great deal more to offer than any of you know," Gandalf glances toward Bilbo. ", including himself."
"I would also not look over Ms.Took here either! She has shown interest in your adventure, which is more than your own kin! She, along with her cousin, would be an amazing asset to the company," Gandalf vouches. The dwarves mumble and whisper to each other while the wizard sneaks a wink to the girl. She smiled happily at him. Gandalf was truly an outstanding man.
The wizard looks to Thorin, "You must trust me on this."
The dwarf sighs, nodding. "Very well, we will do it your way." He grumbles. "Give him the contract."
Bilbo shakes his head, "No! No... wait please!"
"We're in! We're off!" Bofur exclaims, smiling like a fool.
Balin gets out a folded piece of parchment. Holding it out to Bilbo. "It's just the usual. Summary of out-of-pocket expenses, time required, remuneration, funeral arrangements, so forth." He tells him.
Bilbo takes the parchment. Estella stares at the contract in Bilbo's hand like it's gold. Her heart pounds so hard she can hear it in her own ears. It almost felt as if it would pounce right out of her chest. Especially when Thorin looks her straight in her eyes, "And if you would like to join your cousin, then sign underneath him. You are... welcome to join."
Just at that Bilbo's face grew pale. He looks at his cousin, lump in throat. "Please Bilbo, we must at least look at it!" Estella says.
"I- Estella, he literally said FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS- Does that not scare you?" Bilbo whimpers but sees his cousin's eyes. They were so bright. They have never, ever been this bright. "Very well, let's look at it." He unfolds the parchment. When it fell open, the contract was almost as tall as Bilbo himself. Bilbo glances over, reading out loud. Thorin in the dining room watches the two hobbits as they look over the terms. He looks at Gandalf, a serious frown on his face. He leans in and whispers sternly, "I cannot guarantee his safety, nor the girl's."
Gandalf frowns at that but nods. "Understood."
"Nor will I be responsible for their fate."
"...Agreed."
Bilbo follows the words with his finger, mumbling aloud with Estella watching over his shoulder. "'Total's cash on delivery, up to but not exceeding, one-fourteenth of total profit if any.'" He reads aloud.
"Seems fair," Estella says with a grin.
"Uh...' The present company shall not be liable for injuries inflicted by or sustained as a consequence thereof, including, but not limited to...lacerations. Evisceration...." He carries on. Bilbo unfolds more of the contract. His face grows pale for the tenth time that night as he reads the next word. "...Incineration?" Estella stares at the word in front of her. She wasn't afraid of the word. I mean, they were facing a dragon! Of course, this would be possible!
"Oh, aye, he'll melt the flesh off your bones in the blink of an eye," Bofur confirms. Estella gave the dwarf a stern look as Bilbo begins to breathe heavily.
"Breath, dear. It's okay." Estella says sweetly, rubbing his back comfortingly. Bilbo shakes his head.
"Are you all right, laddie?" Balin asks.
"Huh?" Bilbo says, trying to catch his breath. "Yeah, I just feel- a little bit faint."
"Come on Bilbo, you should sit down," Estella whispers to him.
"Think furnace, with wings." Bofur grins. Not quite understanding that Bilbo is hyperventilating.
"I...I...I need air."
"Flash of light, searing pain, then poof! You're nothing more than a pile of ash!"
Bilbo stares at Bofur in horror. He looks at the dwarves for a moment, and then his dear cousin. The image of him and worst of all her, becoming a pile of ash passes through his mind. "Nope." He mumbles, before falling backward onto the wooden floor unconscious. Estella gasped and hurried to his side. She glares at Bofur, who slightly cowers under her stare.
"He was obviously not comfortable with that! Why would you continue on?!" She scowls.
"I- sorry ma'am-"
"No. Shush." She snaps, shutting the dwarf up quickly. " Gandalf can you help me take him to his armchair?"
Gandalf stands up, walking to the halfling's side. "Of course Lady Took."
"Blasted dwarves, have no sympathy," Estella mumbles under her breath before helping Gandalf take Bilbo to his chair. The dwarves talk quietly amongst themselves, in fear that Estella might snap at them again. They were already very fond of the sweet girl but didn't wish to see her angry.
It didn't take long for Bilbo to wake up from his episode. Gandalf sighs in relief and glances over at Estell who held his hand by his side. "Do you need anything, dear?" She asks. Bilbo shakes his head and pats the top of her hand.
"I'm okay,"
"Lady Took, do you mind-" Gandalf asks, glancing at her and back at the archway.
"Oh no. Of course not," She says kindly. She smiles at Bilbo. "Call me if you need anything."
Estella leaves the room for the two to talk. She decides to walk back to the dwarves who still talked low. She sees some smoking, sipping their ale in silence, whispering to each other. In the hallway, near the room she had just left was Thorin Oakenshield and Balin. Thorin leaned against the wall of the hobbit hole and Balin sitting across from him.
When they see Estella, they sit up a bit straighter. Balin gives her a smile, to which she instantly returns. "How is the laddie doing?" Balin asks.
"Better. I think." Estella sighs.
"He's a bit squeamish," Thorin shakes his head.
"You can't exactly blame him. He's lived in a safe place for most of his life, this is new to him."
"What about you?" Thorin asks.
"What about me?"
"You haven't fainted yet," amusement was in the prince's voice.
Estella smiles slightly, "You're right. I won't lie, I've dreamed of an opportunity to get out of the Shire for years."
"Is that so?" Balin laughs.
"My father always told me of my ancestors. The warriors, the adventurers. It's in my blood," Estella sighs. "I need to get away. I mean, for the love of the gods, you all have been far kinder to me than my own people." Estella sighs. She glances over her should to look toward the room she left Bilbo in. " Bilbo doesn't understand I don't belong here."
Balin and Thorin look at her sympathetic eyes and she lets out a nervous laugh. "I apologize, I doubt you want to hear my life story. I always overshare to people that listen."
"Well, dearie, you are very welcome to our company." Balin kindly tells her. A comforting hand on her forearm.
"A strong, willing heart. That's very important. The world needs more of that," Thorin says, low. His eyes avoided Estella's but it was still very meaningful. Her heart skipped a beat and she felt accepted by him. Not fully but she had foot through through the door.
Suddenly, Bilbo hurries away from the room. Estella watches him with a large frown. Balin shakes his head in disappointment, "It appears we have lost our burglar. Probably for the best. The odds were always against us. After all, what are we? Merchants, miners, tinkers, toymakers. Hardly the stuff of legend..."
Thorin smiles down at his old friend. "here are a few warriors amongst us."
"Old Warriors," Balin frowns.
"I would take each and every one of these dwarves over an army from the Iron Hills, for when I called upon them, they answered. Loyalty, honor. I can ask no more than that." Thorin says fondly and Estella's heart flutters. His trust in these dwarves was heartwarming. Estella already knew that this man is someone she would gladly follow.
   "You don't have to do this. You have a choice. You've done honorably by our people. You have built a new life for us in the Blue Mountains. A life of peace and plenty. A life that is worth more than all the gold in Erebor."
   "From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day when the dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice, Balin. Not for me."
    Balin solemnly nods, standing up on his feet. "Then we are with you, laddie. We will see it done."
    The old dwarven warrior walks back to the company of dwarves, leaving Estella and Thorin. She peeks over at the dwarf who was actually taller than her. She hadn't realized how close she was until she looked over. He was beautiful with his strong jawline, long onyx hair, literally perfect skin. Who was this man? If she hadn't known any better, she would have thought he was a god of some sort. Thorin Oakenshield was surreal. "I am with you as well, sir'. If you will have me," Estella tells him softly.
      "Thank you, Lady Took. We are leaving at daybreak," He informs her.
      They lock eyes and she gives him a giant smile, in hope of getting him to. "You got it! Daybreak it is!" Estella nods. Thorin, to her disappointment, didn't smile back but he gave her a minute grin. Very, very minute. It was better than nothing she supposed. "Get some rest," He mumbles to her, then goes to join his kin. Estella kept smiling though he was gone. What a man. Then she remembered, Bilbo. She supposed she ought to Estella quickly turns and rushes off toward Bilbo's room. "Bilbo! Dear!" She calls out as she enters the room. And there he was leaning against his bedpost on the foot of his bed. He looked upset. Estella sits next to him, putting a hand on his shoulder.
     "You're going..." Bilbo mumbles. It wasn't a question. It was a statement.
     "Yes."
    And that was that. They both just stared into the nothingness. Nothing but low voices beginning to sing. Low and rumbling voices filling the halls, with the sorrowful song of their lost home. The two hobbits listened together, solemnly.
  Far over the Misty Mountains cold.
  To dungeons deep and caverns old.
  We must away ere break of day.
  To find our long-forgotten gold.
The pines were roaring on the height, the winds were moaning in the night.
  The fire was red, it flaming spread.
  The trees like torches blazed with light.

~Can You Promise?~ Pt 1
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Come on Chun-Hei, can't I just move in with you?" I begged.
"As much as I would love to, I already have an idiot brother and a Jimmy living with me. So like, no." I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh.
"I'm just nervous, now I have to meet with the woman who owns the apartment."
"Where are you meeting her?" She asked.
"At the cafe, I figured it would make me feel better to meet somewhere I'm comfortable." I said.
"That's smart, no Jimmy, you can't go with her to her interview. I'll call you later Jinnie, call me when you've finished." I said goodbye and hung up the phone, slipping it into my back pocket.
I nervously played with the hem of my shirt as I opened the door to the cafe that I've come to call a second home. I skipped over to the counter and smiled up at Mi-Sun.
"Ah Jin-Hee, are you here for your interview?" She asked. I let out a sigh before nodding.
"Yes, and I'm really nervous. I need this apartment, but what if she doesn't like me? I don't want to have to live with Jinyoung for the rest of my life." I whined.
Minmin laughed as she placed and Iced Coffee on the counter in front of me. She leaned forward and rested her elbows on the counter.
"Don't worry, you'll do great." She assured me. I smiled as she ruffled my hair slightly.
"Thanks, Unnie, I'm going to sit down." I grabbed my coffee and moved over to the booth by the door.
I lifted my cup ad put the straw in my mouth, taking a sip. I can't believe that I finally get to start college. After everything that happened, I never thought that I would make it to this point. Jinyoung has tried everything he can to help me, my entire family has.
But, I think now I'm ready to try and do it on my own. So that's why I figured it was time to move into the apartment. It's close to the college and close to the cafe. And Mi-Sun is understanding enough to work around my college hours.
I really hope that this all works, I don't want to have to depend on my family again I've done that enough in this life. I heard the door chime as it opened, someone just came inside.
It was an older woman, her elegance was unmatched. Her long black hair flowed naturally down her back and bounced as she walked. A long brown coat covered most of her body and you could see the bottom hem of her black dress. Black heels clicked on the floor as she walked up to the counter.
"Excuse me, you wouldn't happen to know a Bae Jin-Hee, would you?" She asked Mi-Sun. She peeked over at me and nodded.
"Hi, you must be Kim Hyo-Joo. My name is Bae Jin-Hee." I greeted bowing slightly. She smiled and walked over to me.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you. You're so much prettier then I imagined." I blushed slightly at her comment.
She was beautiful, it was hard for me to believe that she wasn't thirty. Light, natural makeup highlighted her natural features. Her eyes were a deep brown color and crinkled at the sides as she smiled.
"Thank you, uh, please, sit. Would you like anything to drink?" I asked.
"No that is quite all right. I would just like to get to know you better." I nodded and awkwardly sat across from her.
"So tell me, do you have a job?" She asked.
"Yes uh, I actually work here." She laughed softly.
"I see, so that is why you asked to meet here. This place is cute, it suites you. And you are planning on attending the University of Yeongu. I am getting a major in English with a minor in photography."
"That is quite amazing. Now, this place that I am offering, four people already live there. My own child being one of them, you rent wouldn't be too expensive, I understand that you work hard and with being in college you won't be able to work many hours. Everything will be provided for you, except for your personal needs. And you would be able to move in as soon as it is convenient for you. Do you have any questions about anything?" She asked.
"Um, a few. If four people already live in the apartment, why do you need someone else?" I asked.
"Well, those kids tend to get a little hot-headed. It almost feels like I'm raising children all over again. It would be nice to have someone like you move in. And I know that it's hard to find a place where you can stay. Especially on such short notice." She explained.
"The ones that already live there, do they go to college?"
"Yes, three of them actually attend the same college as you, and the youngest still attends high school."
"Ah, I, I don't think I have anything else." I said.
"Perfect, you still have my number, so I will call you once everything is ready. Do you need help moving your things?" She asked as she stood up.
"No, I shouldn't have any problems." I said. I quickly stood up and bowed again. "Thank you."
"Of course dear, we will be in contact soon." She spun around and exited the shop before I could even say anything else.
I was still a little confused about what just happened I stood up and walked over to MInmin. She laughed and she leaned over the counter.
"So, that was easy." She said.
"Right? I feel like it was a little too easy." I mumbled.
"Who cares, you got the room. You should go home now and celebrate." She quickly ushered the out of the building.
I couldn't help but smile as I began my trek home. I can't believe that actually agreed to let me move in. But, moving in with four other girls, is that really a good idea? I hope they're nice. She said that one of them was her daughter, and that three of them attend the same school as I do.
This could be fairly interesting. I turned onto my road and skipped down the rest of the street. I opened the front door and cheered loudly.
"I'm home!" I slipped off my shoes and put my slippers on my feet.
I went into the kitchen where my mother was working on dinner.
"There you are dear, so tell me, how did it go?" She asked turning to me. I smiled and jumped up so I was sitting on the counter.
"It went great. She said I could move in as soon as possible. But, there was something strange about her."
"What do you mean?" She asked handing me an apple.
"Well, she said that four people already live in the apartment, and one of them is her daughter. And three of them are attending the same school as me."
"Hmm, if four people already live in the apartment why would they need one more person?" She asked. I shrugged my shoulders.
"That was my same thought. But, it's a nice place and it's close to school. It won't be so bad. I just hope the girls are nice." I mumbled taking a bite of my apple.
"I'm sure they are. Now, go finish packing. Your brother can help you move the big stuff. Call Min-Hyuk and Jimmy, ask them if they can help." I nodded and leaned over, placing a chaste kiss on her cheek.
"I will, I love you." I ran to my bedroom and stood in the center of the room, looking around.
"Hmm, how am I going to do this?" I asked myself.
I opened my closet and began to take everything off of the hangers. I placed them on my bed and began to fold them up.
"Hey, mom told me you got the place, congrats." I looked up when I heard my brother's voice.
Jinyoung stood in the doorway of my room, leaning against the frame. His arms were crossed over his chest and he smiled at me.
"Yeah, I'm moving in the day after tomorrow. You don't mind helping me do you?" I asked. He chuckled and walked into the room.
"Of course I will, have you called the other two losers yet?" He asked. I shook my head and stood up.
"Not yet, I was going to do that tonight. You don't think they would mind do you?" He scoffed and mumbled something under his breath.
"What did you say?" I asked. He chuckled and ruffled my hair.
"Nothing. I don't think they would mind helping. Especially Min-Hyuk, not like he has anything better to do." He chuckled as he walked out of the room
I looked after him confused. What does that mean? I didn't have time to think about it when my phone began ringing. I pulled it out of m pocket and smiled when I saw Jimmy's name.
"Jimjim, I was just about to all Min-Hyuk." I laughed.
"Yeah, well I'm more important. So, how did the interview go?" He asked.
"Good, I got the place and am moving in the day after tomorrow. Do you think you and Min-Hyuk can help me move in?" I asked sweetly.
"Of course I'll help! I don't know about grouchy pants over there he's being lame."
"Is he now? Am I gonna have to come over and sit on him again?" I asked.
"Do it and I'll kill you." I heard him call.
"Bring it on loser." I laughed. I couldn't see him, but I could tell that he was rolling his eyes.
"We'll be over to help you, don't mind him" Jimmy laughed.
"I'll buy dinner for you guys helping me."
"Free food? I'm in!" Chun-Hei shouted.
"You would be involved if there's food." That's my best friend. One hundred percent food motivated.
"I really appreciate you guys. Thank you for helping me."
"Of course, you know we'll always be here for you." Jimmy said
"Now hang up so she can finish packing." I hard Min-Hyuk snap.
"Jeez you old man, quit being grumpy." Everyone said goodbye and tossed the phone onto my bed.
I turned back around and looked around. Well, it's finally time to start life on my own. And I'm really excited.
NALU prompt-7- Freedom
Lucy was in a fairy tale, she was like Rapunzel enclosed in her chambers forever. Her father had grown overprotective for her after her mother died, it was caused by some genetic disorder and prevention was the only cure for it, so she was enclosed in her room.
She was home tutored and was friends with all the maids who were named after the celestial sign. During her early childhood she owned a dog named plue but her dad suspected that it might cause her some allergy and initiate the genetic reaction and turned him away.
Being alone she had developed a habit of fantasying about the world beyond, she always asked all the maids what they saw? how other people were? Though the small window in her room she could see the hills and a speck of town far away.
“How nice it would it be to go there for once.” She sighed.
Most of the maids were living in the house too. Virgo, Leo and Taurus were the one who went out frequently and Leo was the one that brought few people back, mainly at a time that her father was out of the town.
That was how she met- Gray, Cana and Karen. Though their visits were not so frequent, whenever they came they brought something for her and lots of pictures. She was glad for the developed technology so she could talk to her newly made friends.
  Someone was at her home, and he was pretty loud, Leo must have brought someone else this time. Excitement filled her and she ran out of her room, down the stairs to meet this person.
“It’s huge, Dude you scored high.” He was saying patting his back
When Lucy reached there all she could see was tuft of pink hairs.
“Pink?”
“Huh! It’s Salmon girl.”
They locked eyes for a second and Lucy decided she did not like this person, disappointed she started climbing the stairs to her room.
“Lucy Wait.” Leo called her out and she turned back to act polite.
“Lucy this is Natsu Dragneel”
“This is Lucy?” Natsu exclaimed.
“Yes, pink head.” She simply stated.
“Are you dumb? It’s salmon and not pink.”
“I get you the first time”
“Didn’t feel like that.”
“Humpp”
He stuck his tongue out at her.
“It seems you are getting along well, excuse me I have work to do.” Leo said and left.
Both glared at each other for a few moments, Lucy sighed and said
“let’s go up.”
“I am no going anywhere with you.”
“suits yourself, stay here”
She started going up the stairs and soon enough she heard his little footsteps behind her.
“Weren’t you not coming with me?”
“Shut up.”
When they reached her room, they made grumpy faces and were not talking to each other looking away.
Finally, it was Natsu who broke the silence- “Sooo, whatever I heard about you is that true?”
At this she jerked her head towards him- what did he heard? Her being alone? Her disease probability? Her fantasy?
“you write awesome novels?”
“Eh!”
“Gray told that the only novels he could read is yours.”
“Oh! So he really did sneak into my stuff.” She emitted an evil aura “you are done Gray.” She whispered, and Natsu visibly paled.
“Poor him. Well can I have a look at them.”
“Obviously not”
“Knew you sucked at writing, ice steak is just stupid for liking it, or was it an evil trap to bore me to death.”
“You do remember the author of the book is still standing here.”
“As if that matters.”
Before he could analyse what happened, he was slammed on the wall via a Lucy kick. God what force it contained, she looked fragile but she was strong. And suddenly beside him was a pile of books.
“Have a look”
He cautiously took one out of the pile and read a few lines and he didn’t even realise that he was nearing the end now.
“God Luce this is awesome.” He kept the book aside and started shaking her emphasis.
“Okay I got it now stop shaking me.”
“Actually, I think this way it is good to watch someone read your book, you get to know what the flocks like.”
“Well, where did you get the idea of zoo on top of a mountain?”
“It’s just my fantasy and I think it worked on you, you are being less mean to me.”
“I was mean to you?” he shrugged and continued “you are awesome Luce.”
“Who is Luce now?”
“Obviously you dumbo.”
“Hey!” she protested and punched him lightly on the shoulder to which he laughed and said “I like it better that way and am going to call you Luce from now on.” He ruffled her hairs.
She pouted and blushed a bit.
For the next few hours they played board games with him telling her everything that was happening in their town, his classes, his brawl with Gray, his interests in boxing, the famous food and the beautiful places there. Nobody had told her about such things in so much detail, while making her laugh so hard that she had to clutch her stomach to prevent it from bursting so it was evening and Leo came in to take Natsu back.
“Hey Luce, it was fun today I will be coming a lot now.”
“I would love that Natsu.”
“Wow, you actually hit it off?” Leo asked and both of them glanced at him and then at each other and grinned widely.
  After their first meet Natsu used to call her every weekend, and when ever her dad was not around all of her friends came in and they had a reunion party which was every 3 to 6 months. Now her friends included Erza, Jellal, Levy, Mira, Wendy, Juvia, Lisanna, Gajeel too.
She was very happy and everything was going smooth noow she her friends were entering high school and so she was. All this was happening without her dad’s knowledge but it was not accepted by fate. One day when her Dad was out for the meeting there was a storm and the meeting cancelled and he came home, and that exact moment they were having their reunion and shouts, music, drinks and food was all over when her dad entered her room which was immediately followed by a pin drop silence and wide -eyed audience.
“Shit! Dad”
“Lucy, come to my study. RIGHT NOW.” it echoed in her room, she was so terrified that tears started forming in her eyes and soon enough rolling down her cheeks and then with a loud thud the door was closed.
“Lucy, everything would be fine you don’t worry.” Natsu was immediately beside her, soothing her back and hugging her tightly. Soon she hugged each of her friends as if she was seeing them for the last time and emotionlessly walked towards her Father’s study.
“Dad”
“Lucy, my darling daughter what am I seeing? Why did you do this? Everything I was doing was for your protection and with this step are you trying to tell me that I did wrong? I don’t wish for your well-being?” He eyes were also moisten.
“No dad, it’s not like that I just wanted a normal life that all the kids out there are having, exploring, making friends and enjoying.”
“But I did try to make your life as normal as possible, was it not enough? If you had something you should have told me.”
“Dad-“
“You do understand that I don’t want to loose you too.”
“Yeah dad I understand.”
“Well if my darling wants this then we would make it a 6 months reunion and I would be included too.”
“Thank you, Dad, I love you a lot.”
“Love you too darling.”
  She cheered along with her friends that now that his father had accepted it would be more fun. But, again there was a turn of events, suddenly she fell ill, severely and her dad blamed it on her meeting with her friends though others were trying to explain it had been going on for years now. He didn’t believe hence Leo was fired and all her friends were banned from entering the Heartfilia property.
She was cured within a week- time but, missed her friends badly she was so used to them that this was not acceptable to her. She tried talking to her father but he rejected everything she wanted to say for her own safety, and even banned her from using the phone, now she was restricted entry to all places except her room.
It was week to go for her birthday and Virgo informed her that Natsu was there at her Father’s work place and reasoning with him but he is adamant.
  It was her Birthday. She was turning 18 but she was not happy at all this could be a day of their reunion and here she was sulking near her window, she nearly screamed when someone jumped in from her window if not him shutting her mouth with his.
“Happy Birthday Luce.” He said after parting.
“Thank you Natsu. But, how come you are here?”
“I am here to take you away.”
“Huh! Shut up Natsu it is my home why would I leave?”
“I want to free you from these restrictions so come with me.”
“Natsu, Dad-“
“Luce, believe in me.” He hugged her tightly, god how much had he missed her.
“He wrapped his arms around her waist and jumped from her window, though it was at a height they landed smoothly. Then she noticed the rope hanging from her window. They and got inside a car, her dad’s car for that matter and left in a fast drive towards the gate.
“What in the world is going on? You want it to look like I escaped from a prison?”
“Well you did escape.” He laughed.
“That was not funny.”
“Well you must me knowing the deal I had with your dad.”
He blank face made him blink in surprise and he started giving her the details.
“Well since the strict security was added we couldn’t meet you, so I went to meet with you dad explaining him how he was not providing you the freedom to live your life as you wish and killing you inside day by day, but your old man stuck to his point that if you were in front of him then he would never loose you.”
“So I challenged him, that if I managed to take you out of the Heartfilia property before your birthday was over, he would give you your freedom.”
She gaped at him, he did so much for her?
“Well to make the plan successful first we kidnapped your dad and his car then I came in the security didn’t suspect the car and Gajeel’s wall climbing tools and technique came in handy.” He nervously laughed.
“Where is my dad?”
“He is with Mira, she must be trying her level best to give him a piece of her mind.”
She was relieved and soon enough she was with all her friends and her dad celebrating her birthday in the restaurant preferred by all. She never imagined her birthday would end up like this. It was like her fantasy had come true, and she was living in her dream world, happily.
Haneul just really needed a drink. After this day of constant pestering from her two friends using various means and the annoying meeting, she really wanted to down an entire bottle of wine and try and get some peace and quiet. Wonshik had promised her drinks. But she didn't expect to see Jaehwan and Wonshik waiting for her at the end of the day with giant grins on their faces as Jaehwan declared.
“We're going bar hopping!”
Hanuel’s face dropped as the two looped their arms around hers as Sanghyuk and Hongbin walked into the reception looking mutinous as Hakyeon followed with a grin on his face.
“We’re going for a movie!” he declared as Haneul shot Sanghyuk and Hongbin a look as the two rolled their eyes. Minah entered the room and sat down on the couch reserved for visitors.
“I heard you guys were going for a movie.” she said, looking up at Sanghyuk and Hongbin.
“I asked you to come with me, but you said nooo.” Sanghyuk stuck his tongue out at her.
“I said I didn’t want to third wheel on your date with your beloved Binnie.”
“I am not his beloved!” Hongbin cringed.
“But I see you have your third wheel in Hakyeon.” Minah ended as Hakyeon shot her a peace sign.
“It was Sunbae Notice Me. The newest comedy in the theatres, I couldn’t miss it.” he shrugged before turning to Wonshik, Jaehwan, and Haneul.
“I heard you guys are going bar hopping?”
“I didn’t want to.” Haneul sulked.
“You’ll have fun. We promise.” Wonshik guaranteed as Jaehwan nodded in agreement as they turned to Minah.
“Wanna join us?”
“Nah, not in the mood for alcohol, I have plans, don’t worry!” she grinned.
“Okay!” Jaehwan said before tugging his companions along as Hakyeon turned to Minah.
“Well, we’ll see you soon. Or we’ll be late for the movie.” he said as Minah smiled and waved to the group. It was then that Taekwoon entered the lounge and cleared his throat, attracting Minah’s attention.
“Are you ready?”
“Sure am!”
---
The first bar Haneul set foot in with Wonshik and Jaehwan was lit up in pink and had so many Valentine related things cluttered around that it physically made her wince. But when her drink was handed to her by the bartender, she didn’t mind it as much.
Maybe the place would grow on her.
Apparently alcohol and Valentine’s Day decor only got her even more grumpy as Wonshik and Jaehwan swiftly escorted her out of the bar before she punched the next heart shaped thing in her vision.
“Hearts are so mainstream.” she nodded to no one in particular.
“But hearts are cute!” Jaehwan said. He made finger hearts for her, only to get a glare in return. “Accept our hearts Haneul!” Jaehwan sang making one with his arm over his head and the second half with Wonshik’s arm.
“Are you both already drunk?” she asked, rolling her eyes.
“This one has a really long line” Wonshik noted. They had reached the second venue only to find a long line of people waiting to get in.
“We could go to the club on 27th Street” he suggested. Haneul took a moment to debate the idea. If they did decide to go, they would have to walk another two miles. But the place would be less crowded and they could get in easily. She whined a little, already starting to tire from the long day when two girls walked up to Jaehwan.
“Hi there. Are you guys looking for a partner?” one of them asked. Jaehwan and Wonshik looked at each other, unsure of what the girls wanted. Haneul scowled at being ignored when she was right next to the two men.
“They are taken no thank you” she exclaimed, squeezing in between the two men and linking her arms with them. The girl who had talked gave her a look before walking away.
“I have no idea what just happened” Jaehwan confessed.
“They were looking for partners to get the discounted couple entry. I keep forgetting that both of you are handsome and hence easy targets” Haneul said with a frown. She looked at the two and sighed because both of them were smiling at being called handsome.
“So we are handsome?” Wonshik prompted leaning in to tease her.
“I stand corrected. You both are just idiots” Haneul huffed before unlinking her arms and walking forward.
Jaehwan and Wonshik hurried after her to catch up. They bumped into her as she suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. “Do you want to go to a club or do you want to get drunk?” Haneul asked them in all seriousness. “Because if we go to a club, both of you will just be hit on by random women. And I know the perfect place to go get drunk without being hit on” she explained.
“You don't have to worry about us! Our hearts belong to you” Jaehwan sang. Haneul resisted the urge to hit him and looked to Wonshik who seemed to be deep in thought. “I wanted to destress with some music too. But without worrying about someone constantly hitting on you” he told her. Haneul blushed a little but coughed to hide it.
“Let's just get loads of beer and soju and head over to my place. We can plug our phones in for music and if we shift the couch we can get enough space for a mini dance floor” she decided.
“Taking not one, but two men home with you? What ever would your mother say?” Jaehwan fake gasped.
“You can stay here then” Haneul said sarcastically.
“I was just kidding” he said sheepishly while Wonshik grinned.
“So cute” he thought out loud.
“I know right?” Jaehwan asked proudly.
“Why am I seriously here?” Haneul asked no one in particular.
And so Haneul ended up slamming three shot glasses down on the coffee table. Wonshik had set up the playlist for the evening and the fried chicken had been ordered to go along with the beer and soju. The three of them had slipped into something comfortable for the night. Haneul tried to avoid looking at how the undershirts they were wearing accentuated their biceps (the memory of Wonshik’s bare chest was still fresh in her mind no thank you very much) and the boys preened a little, showing off at every chance they got.
“Do you want us to move the couch?”
“How about we move the table??”
“We can lift these books. Easy job”
“Do you want us to lift you up so you can reach those glasses?”
Haneul shook her head. At one point, Jaehwan had decided to drink water and she could swear she had been fixated at the way his adam’s apple bobbed. She clearly must have been losing her mind. “Let's start with the beer! And there is so much chicken! Fried chicken!” she exclaimed joyfully, thankful that eating would provide a distraction. She wasn't lying about loving fried chicken but now it was serving as yummy food as well as a way to save her sanity and she had never been gladder for its existence.
“So clumsy” Jaehwan teased before leaning forward and wiping away the sauce on the side of her lips.
“Here. Let me tie your hair for you” Wonshik offered. He picked up a hair tie from the coffee table and made a haphazard bun of her hair before tying it up. Haneul smiled sheepishly before picking up her glass of beer and drinking it as if it was water.
“You should slow down” Wonshik said while Jaehwan exclaimed “Drinking competition! Whoo!”
Perhaps some things are better done in moderation - is a lesson the three would learn the morning after.
“I don't think that people appreciate fried chicken enough you know?” Haneul slurred a little. She had been buzzed for quite a while now. How many shots had they done? She had lost count after the third bottle of soju had been opened. “People don't appreciate potatoes either” she continued while Jaehwan nodded in full agreement and Wonshik was lost in thought. “Have you thought about how tasty it is but how people always discriminate against it? Ugly as a potato. Don't be a couch potato? Maybe I want to be a potato you know? Why would you judge such a vegetable? It's infinitely better than being broccoli??” she pointed out, very confused.
“Stop potato discrimination 2k17!” Jaehwan yelled holding up another shot glass. The three of them cheered and took another shot before putting the glass down. Haneul turned to Wonshik who had been awfully quiet throughout the entire endeavour.
“Why are you thinking and not drinking?” she asked doing aegyo.
“I have been thinking about something very serious” he told her in a low whisper. Jaehwan scooted in to listen as well, effectively sandwiching Haneul in the middle.
“Do lobsters think fishes are flying?” Wonshik asked. He looked at Jaehwan and Haneul who looked at each other before sighing and falling against the couch.
“That's a very good question” Jaehwan noted. Haneul agreed, scrambling for a post it note and a marker to write the word ‘intelligent’ on it and stick it to Wonshik’s forehead. Except it was suddenly very hard so she just drew a heart and stuck it on his stomach.
“I want one too!” Jaehwan pouted.
“Sorry! Sorry” Haneul apologised before sticking one on his bicep. “Sorry” she said imitating a foreign accent before gasping and stumbling to stand up. “Sorry sorry sorry” she started to sing while trying to do the dance. But she lost her footing and ended up falling back on the couch.
“I miss Super Junior” she said with a sob. Tears started to flow soon as well with both Jaehwan and Wonshik trying to calm her down. “
It's okay! They will be back soon!” Wonshik consoled her.
“Till then you have us!” Jaehwan told her.
“Yeah! You'll always have us” Wonshik agreed. Haneul wiped her tears away to look at the two men.
“I really loved them” she said with a sniff.
“You can love us! You can totally love us!” Jaehwan exclaimed trying to cheer her up.
“Yeah! Just look at Jaehwan. He's so cute! He'll always make you smile!” Wonshik said.
“And Wonshik is so cool! And witty too!” Jaehwan added.
“Jaehwan makes everyone laugh. He's the life of any party” Wonshik said with a sigh.
“But have you seen Wonshik’s dj-ing skills? He literally brings the party to life!” Jaehwan countered.
“But you have a lovely voice! You can just make music as you sing! You beatbox too!” Wonshik said.
“But you rap really well and you have a unique style!” Jaehwan praised.
“I try” Wonshik said modestly.
“You succeed!” Jaehwan declared. The two men smiled at each other, leaning in while ignoring Haneul who had tears in her eyes.
“You both are perfect for each other” she said with more sniffs. “I won't need anyone as long as I have you!” Wonshik declared. “Wonshik!” Jaehwan exclaimed as he tried to hug him, forgetting Haneul in the middle who was crying tears of joy. “Just get married already” she said with a lot of sincere joy (for a drunk person).
“We don't have rings” Wonshik lamented.
“I can draw a ring! What's the point of being an artist if you can't draw a ring for your man?” Jaehwan exclaimed.
“Yeah! Where there is a marker there is a way!” Haneul agreed digging a marker out of nowhere. “I have a highlighter too! For shading” Wonshik said holding a yellow highlighter up.
“Brilliant! This is why I love you!” Jaehwan said.
“I have a phone! We can record your vows!” Haneul said.
The three of them stood up. Jaehwan made his way to Wonshik and held him as steady as he could as Haneul found her phone and started to record.
“I do!” Jaehwan yelled skipping ceremony.
“I do too!” Wonshik declared before handing Jaehwan the marker and highlighter so that he could draw the rings.
“And now I declare you both happily married” Haneul cheered when the rings were complete. “You may kiss!” she said happily.
“Noooo. I feel shy” Wonshik said as Jaehwan made suggestive eyebrows at him.
“Both of my friends got married today” Haneul wept as Jaehwan was now hugging Wonshik on the couch.
“Love is so inspiring. We should tell everyone about this” she decided, going through the contacts list. She found the number she had been looking for before hitting dial.
“Biker sunbae! Jaehwan and Wonshik just got married! Say congratulations!” she said at one go. “No no. It was a completely sober decision. Just like this one is. Sunbae let's get married!” Haneul spoke.
“Yeah! Get married! It feels amazing!” Jaehwan yelled from the side.
“I love you. Jaehwan loves Wonshik. Wonshik loves Jaehwan. Taekwoon only loves coffee because he is a cat. That’s one... two… three! Three perfect reasons for us to get married” she explained. She gasped and stared at her phone before scowling. “Stupid jealous cat” she said frowning at the fact that Taekwoon had taken Minah’s phone and hung up on her.
“I think Wonshik fell asleep” Jaehwan said. Haneul looked up to see Wonshik dozing off at one end of the couch. “How can a person fall asleep on their wedding night?” Jaehwan grumbled before pouting and hugging Wonshik. Haneul giggled at the two before opening up the texting group. So what if Taekwoon hadn’t let her confess on the phone? She could confess on the group! And while they were at it, she could also encourage Sanghyuk and Hongbin to get married as well! They deserved love and happiness too, didn’t they? Haneul typed furiously with a new resolve.
She frowned at the text messages sent in reply. Hakyeon was confused while Sanghyuk just asked her if she was drunk. She wasn’t drunk! No! Not at all! She was perfectly sober no thank you very much. She scowled darkly before flinging her phone away and snuggling with her new teddy bear on the floor. Tomorrow morning, she would pop the question to her awesome biker sunbae again. More romantically than Taekwoon ever would, she thought with vengeance. She giggled at the thought of marrying Minah and having cute children like Injung before finally succumbing to her tiredness and passing out. Strangely her couch felt as warm and as comfortable as a human hug.
So I was encouraged to “journal” to get some of the stuff that runs through my head out..so I’m going to try and do this but knowing me, I’ll write one post and forget I agreed to commit to it and not write another one for months.. oops.
Anyways, I’ll make this post about some of the positive things about my job. And save all the negative depressing shit for a different day, different post.
Let me start by saying that I love my job. I never thought I would find a job straight out of school that I absolutely loved. You always imagine that working for a living will suck and you’ll hate it but you’ll do it because it’s what is expected of you and what needs to be done. You never imagine that it’s something you’ll genuinely love...but I was wrong. My job is everything I had hoped for when I went into nursing school. This job provides me with what I had always hoped to gain as a nurse and I’ve only been a nurse for a year and a half. How did I ever get so lucky?
Although I don’t enjoy working NOC because of the hours, I do love other parts of it. I think I get more face time with my residents working NOC because I have less treatments and “nursing” things to do so I get more time to sit with a resident and chit chat. I would miss that if I worked days because you’re so busy all day long. My little talks with my residents is my favorite part. There’s two residents in particular right now that have imprinted themselves on my little heart and they are the two I want to talk about right now. Although all my residents have impacted me and they all hold a special place in my heart, these two are sticking out to me lately so I want to talk about them to start.
We’ll start with my little lady, M. I took care of her as a CNA. I took care of her husband as a nursing student. I’ve known her for a long time. We’ve grown pretty close since I’ve taken the NOC position on the unit I work on. She is the last resident’s room I go into at night so I would always sit and talk with her for 15-20 minutes and we’d just talk about what was going on and just different little things. I really look forward to these little chats. She’s with it enough to hold a conversation and remember it weeks down the line so it’s easy to talk with her. She always asks about my boyfriend and my family, like she genuinely gives a shit. It’s just nice to talk with someone who is very reminiscent of my grandmother. She’s had a lot of medical issues back to back recently and it’s really been bringing her spirit down. She was coming out of her room less, doing things she enjoyed less, basically beginning to give up because well she was sick and tired and sick and tired of feeling that way. So Rene and I took her out to lunch for her birthday to cheer her up. Man, did she love it. She talked about it for days. She was instantly saying how she can’t wait to do it again and was trying to think of a good place to go for next time. A restaurant she hadn’t tried yet that she had always wanted to. She was happy. And it made me happy to know that we were able to do that for her. But then she got sick, again. And she’s just gotten sicker since then. She’s been in the hospital for several weeks now. I’ve visited her multiple times, but she’s sick and tired (like usual) and she just sleeps when I’m there. She had to have a huge surgery done that I always had a feeling would be the end to her because it was a huge change medically, physically, and emotionally and I just thought it would all be too much for her to handle. And, right now...I’m seeming to be right. She was supposed to be discharged back to our facility over the weekend but since then has gone septic and is now in very rough condition. Who knows if she’ll even get to come home to us or if she’ll pass in the hospital. It’s really hard to tell at this point. I’m hoping she’ll get to come back so she can be with us, her only family, when she goes. But I guess only time will tell. It breaks my heart to know she isn’t doing well and may or may not get better. But I try to remember that day we took her out and how we impacted her so much just by doing something so simple.. but man, does it suck knowing she may not be around to chit chat with sometime soon... :/ I pray things turn around for her because I don’t think any one of our residents deserves to die alone in a hospital..
Then there’s my little man, L. He is very reserved and closed off. Doesn’t really let anyone know what’s going on in his head. He has a lot of medical issues as well and was given some not so lovely news recently, but he never really showed how he was processing it all, because he doesn’t really talk much to anyone. And he’s very stubborn and independent and kind of a grumpy old man sometimes, so I feel like he kind of turned off anyone from TRYING to figure him out. But me being me, took it as a challenge. I know he hates being bothered by us nurses. But I figured, me being a NOC nurse who has to do less “nursing” things to do than the day nurses, and between the choices of NOC nurses, I’d be the one most likely to crack him and get him to open up. So, let the journey begin. I’ve been trying for months to gain his trust and get him to open up to me. I’ve done nice things after nice things, I’ve gone out of my way to do things for him. I’ve done way more than I’ve needed to as a nurse for him. I’ve ALWAYS done what I said I was going to do and done it WHEN I said I would do it so that he could see me as someone reliable. I’ve always been joking and playful with him so he wouldn’t view me as some bitchy nurse who just wants to bother him with something. I’ve researched his chart and his medical background to get a better idea of what’s going on with him and what he’s been through. When he got his unfortunate news, I researched for at least 2 hours on things he could do to improve his situation. I got PT to start working with him again (although he doesn’t know I did any of this, I could tell that it was all turning his bad mood around and he was smiling more and joking around with staff more). So I felt accomplished. He has surgeries and procedures done quite often, I would leave him little love notes wishing him good luck and leave them on his night stand when I went home for the day so he would see them when he woke up. I mean, I’ve been working at him for a few months now. And although I wasn’t really seeing any progress until lately, I did notice that although he still rolls his eyes when I bring needles around and that, he never VERBALLY gave me shit like he did with other nurses and I got smiles far more often than anyone else. So it was the tiny accomplishments that I took in stride.
Anyways, my past two nights on were milestones for the relationship I was trying to build between us. He had recently had a surgery done and he was having a lot of pain and circulation issues in his arm/hand. So I spent over an hour in his room trying to regain circulation in his arm so that I wouldn’t have to send him to the hospital (because he would rather die than go to the hospital). And he was so sweet and patient with me. He let me do what I needed to do. He didn’t give me shit for bugging him. He was open minded to all my suggestions. He was great. And I got him feeling better and the next day he was STILL sweet with me and thankful and told the day nurse that I was so sweet and nice to him and stuff which I felt great about. And then...THEN!!! He had bumped his arm and aggravated his stitches so he needed his dressing changed, so I was in his room changing the dressing and when we were done, instead of just leaving and going back to whatever he was doing, he literally just starting spewing off all kinds of stories from when he was younger. He told me all the jobs he did while he was in the Navy. He told me all about his life when he was younger and how he used to be a little shit and con people and just he went on and on for an entire hour! I’ve never heard him talk so much. And he was LAUGHING and SMILING and so happy to talk to me about it and reminisce. and OMG MY HEART. I couldn’t believe that my months of hard work were FINALLY paying off. He has NEVER told anyone on our unit about what he did for a living or what he did in the Navy. He never talked about his life before to anyone. He always keeps to himself and doesn’t talk about anything. My heart was so full knowing I finally broke down some walls with him. I ended up having to go into work on my day off and instead of just strolling past me while I was at the desk, he stopped and smiled and talked to me and watched me play with the cat at work and we were laughing together at how she was playing. I mean, I’ve never felt so accomplished at work and I can’t wait to see how this relationship progresses. I really hope I end up being someone he can genuinely trust with stuff and talk with. I hope this wasn’t an isolated incident and that our relationship can continue to grow. Although I am competing with my NOC CNA, I think I’ve broken more ground than her so I’ll just keep our interactions private now so that she can’t one up me haha.
These positive things are what I need to focus on with my job in order to stay sane but sometimes all I can think about is the negative. So I’m hoping writing it all out, the good, bad and ugly, will make me feel better. So my next post probably won’t be so much full of happy memories but more of the realistic side of my job because those things eat at me as well... Anyways, until next time!
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
an Angel the Series fanfic
Tumblr media
It's the first Christmas for Angel Investigations, but Angel isn't really in the mood. Too bad Cordelia has other plans. Set in season one sometimes after Doyle died. This story was originally written in 2014. It’s been lightly edited for composition and clarity and reposted for the holidays.
1550 words | [PG]
“What’s all this?” Angel asked, pushing aside the cage door of the elevator.
Cordelia balanced on a chair, a string of brightly colored lights in her hand. She smiled down at him. “It’s Christmas, silly.”
“Yeah, but what are you doing?”
“What does it look like?”
Angel crossed his arms. “It looks like you’re decorating my office with Christmas lights.”
“Ding, ding. Ten points for the vampire with the grasp of the obvious.”
Wesley came in before Angel could retort, lights twisted around both arms and his neck. He held out the strand, apparently looking for the ends. “I think these things came straight from Hell to torment me. Who put these away last year?”
They both glanced at Angel. “I don’t do Christmas. Take them down.”
“Angel-”
“No. Take them down.” He pushed past Wesley into the outer office. Lights twinkled from around the edge of the room with large plastic snowflakes hanging from the ceiling. He poured a cup of coffee and took a sip. He cringed, barely able to swallow. “Cordelia!”
Cordelia popped her head out of the office.
“What’s wrong with the coffee?”
She came all of the way out, hands on her hips. “It’s seasonal. It has nutmeg in it.”
Angel glared. “I don’t want seasonal coffee; I want normal coffee.” He put the cup down a little harder than necessary.
“Why are you so grumpy?”
“Because there’s a Christmas tree in my office, nutmeg in my coffee, and is that Bing Crosby?” He cocked his head at the music playing softly from a nearby radio.
Cordelia shrugged. Wesley came out of Angel’s office looking a little less tangled. “I think I have-” He yelped in surprise as he faceplanted in the doorway. Angel and Cordelia just stood there staring. “I’m okay; I’m okay,” Wesley said.
“See, they’re a tripping hazard.”
Wesley got up, dusting himself off.
“Well, traditionally they hang from the ceiling.”
“No.”
“Angel-”
“I said, ‘no.’ Take them down.” He huffed, going back into his office. “And make some real coffee.”
* * *
Cordelia flinched as the door slammed in her face. With a sigh, she began rolling up the lights on the floor. Wesley pulled the snowflakes from the ceiling with a snap of each string.
“I thought you said he wouldn’t mind,” said Wesley. “He’ll probably cut off our mutual communication-”
“He’s not going to kick you out, Wesley. It’s fine. Let’s just-” She looked around sadly. “Clean this up.”
She tossed the rolled up lights into a box on her desk then dumped the coffee. When the new pot was freshly brewed, she poured a cup to take to Angel. She slammed the cup in front of him causing him to jump back.
“Regular coffee without a hint of holiday cheer anywhere to be seen.”
Angel growled, wiping coffee from the paper he’d been reading. “Cordelia-”
“No, don’t talk to me. I want to be mad right now.”
He frowned up at her. “That’s not very Christmasey of you.”
She pulled the chair she’d been using earlier to the edge of the room and climbed onto it. “Well, apparently Christmas is canceled within the confines of this office. So-” She began undoing the lights. “I mean it’s not like our clients will miss the cheer,” she muttered. “The only thing that might make their miserable lives a little brighter as they deal with whatever it is they’re dealing with. Not like we couldn’t use a little cheer ourselves. Nah, we wouldn’t want that. Much better to glower and brood and-”
“Cordelia,” Angel yelled. “Do you have something to say to me?” He turned to face her, arms crossed.
Cordelia glared down at him. “Of course not. You’re the boss, and if you want the lights down, then the lights will come down.”
Angel huffed. “Well, can we do it without all of the passive-aggressive hostility?”
“Probably not.”
Grumbling to himself, he threw open the cage to the elevator. “I’ll be downstairs then.”
Outside, Wesley shouted, tumbling forward and landing with a loud thud. “I’m okay!”
* * *
When Angel dared go upstairs again, he found Cordelia sitting at her desk, not a decoration to be seen. She flipped the pages of a magazine.
“What happened to the tree?”
“Wesley took it home,” she said without looking up.
“Any messages?”
“Nope.”
Angel poured another cup of coffee and went back to his office. Things had been slow the last week. And slow meant he had time to think. And thinking led to more thinking. He rubbed at his eyes. He didn’t want to think. Then he’d remember everything that was missing in his life. He could really go for some action. Maybe Cordelia would have a vision.
Just then, Cordelia peeked her head in. “I’m going to go run some errands, okay? I’ll be back in a couple hours.” She didn’t wait for Angel to answer.
The office was unnaturally quiet without her around, and Angel was surprised to find out how much he didn’t miss the solitude. He picked up a penny from the floor. Holding it on end with one finger, he flicked it with his other hand. It spun around and around, dancing across his desk.
“Knock, knock.”
Angel looked up to find Wesley standing in the doorway, looking sullen. “What? Do you need help with a case? Tell me you need help.”
“Actually-” He ventured a few steps in. “I wanted to talk about Cordelia.”
“What about her?” Angel got up and started rummaging through his file cabinet.
“It’s just- I know I haven’t been here very long, but I can’t help but notice-” He trailed off, licking his kips.
“Notice what?”
“That Cordelia seems a little-”
Angel waited, back to Wesley.
“Sad. I know things happened here before I arrived with Doyle and-”
“What are you getting at, Wesley,” Angel asked, banging the drawer shut.
Wesley took a step forward. “I’m saying that I haven’t seen her as bright and excited as I did this morning when she found those decorations. She needed that cheer.”
Angel dropped back into his chair, feeling heavier than he had in a long time. He felt like crap. Crappier than normal. “Things haven’t been right since-”
“Cordelia is hurting.”
“She seems fine to me.”
Wesley sat down across the desk. “That’s because you don’t want to see it. She feels like you’ve shut her out.”
“She told you that,” Angel asked with a frown. He got back up, pacing behind his desk and feeling more than a little trapped.
“Not in so many words, no. But it’s plain to see.” Wesley got up, too. “She’s all alone here.”
Their eyes met, and Wesley gave a weak smile.
“All of us are alone here,” Angel murmured.
“Yes, well, it doesn’t have to be that way.”
* * *
Cordelia shuffled the bags and boxes between her hands as she tried to open the door to the building. Her arms hurt from carrying everything the two blocks from her car, and now the entire load threatened to topple. She finally pushed the door in, but almost tripped across the lobby and into the door of Angel Investigations.
She shoved that door open with a bang. “The parking sucks around here. I had to walk-”
The top box lifted from her pile to expose a smiling Angel. Behind him, Wesley beamed. Then she noticed it—the twinkling colored lights strung from every inch of the office.
“What’s going on?”
Wesley helped relieve her of the rest of her load. “Well, we just-”
“We just thought-” Angel broke in. “I mean, I thought maybe I was a little too-”
“Harsh?” Cordelia provided.
Angel swallowed hard. “Yeah.”
“Do you like it?” asked Wesley. “We put the tree back up. See?”
Cordelia pushed past Angel to sort through her bags. Supplies were put away in silence. She didn’t look at either of them.
“Um-” Angel started.
She glared at him.
“Cordelia.” Angel tried to stop her as she passed again, but she dodged out of his grip.
“No.”
“No what?”
“I’m still mad at you.”
Angel followed her into his office where she set down a box of paper reams. “I put the stuff back up.”
She turned, arms crossed over her chest. “That’s not why I’m mad.” She sighed. “You yelled at me.”
Angel stared at his feet. “I’m sorry.”
“Are you really? Or are you just saying that because it’s what I want to hear?”
“Of course, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped. It’s just- I’m not really the holiday kind of person. And things have been so strained since-”
Cordelia put a hand on his arm. “I know. I miss him, too, but he wouldn’t want us moping around the office. I have a feeling Doyle would have gone all out for Christmas. He seemed like a holiday kind of person.”
A small smile spread across Angel’s face. “You’re probably right.”
“Of course I am.”
His smile widened. “I really am sorry about earlier.”
“Well,” she said with an evil grin, “you can make it up to me with multiple gifts. I like jewelry, shoes, and money.”
“Right, presents.” He grimaced.
“Multiple presents.” She patted his arm as she went into the outer office. “Merry Christmas.”
Angel sighed. “Merry Christmas.”
my husband dislocated his knee 3 months ago and has been in excruciating pain lately. He can't bend, walk on, put weight on his knee without it giving out and making him fall. He wont go to the dr, since we don't have any insurance (in orange co, calif) and he feels that IF he does go then they will put him in a brace or something that will hinder him from working. And since we are living paycheck to paycheck we can't afford to have him miss a lot of work. Meanwhile, he is in a very, very grumpy mood (which I can understand) and he keeps getting himself drunk so the pain will go away or is more manageable yet we all know that it wont help. (think hot dog bun). the insurance company is now saying that they will pay for the repair of the building and for a new lawnmower, but not the car itself. it was not fully restored, but it was in fair working condition (meaning the engine works and the auto does move). does exterior building coverage also include everything inside, or does it have a limit? is the insurance company trying to weasel out of paying my father? if so, who should I call? General car insurance question(s)?
Which will cost more in car insurance, generally: a passenger sedan (maybe a 1999 Honda Civic) or a pickup truck (1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, perhaps)? Also, if I have two trucks, both exactly the same, only, one has 2-wheel drive and one has 4-wheel drive, which will cost more in insurance? If one will infact cost more, will the difference be significant enough to matter? I live in Colorado. 4-wheel drive is desirable with the snow and ice, but if it will cost significantly more in insurance, I can't justify it.""
How much is your car insurance?
I don't want to sound personal but I am wondering what everyone pays in car insurance. I happen to live in Michigan which has the highest car insurances rates in the country. I am planning to move soon and was wondering how much people are paying across the country. Please don't feel a need to give me the exact number, a range is fine. Also, please tell me the car type because I know that matters. Again with car type you don't have to tell the car. Example if you drive a 911 Porsche you could say, 2 door, luxury sports car. Any other information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!""
""What's wrong with my car, Damage and Insurance Question?""
Two days ago, I was involved in a car accident. Allow me to explain what happened. I was stopping at a stop sign, and as I put my foot on the brake, there was some black ice, and my car slid through the stop sign, straight into the intersection, where a woman hit me in the rear end of my car, which spun my car around, making my tap the back of her car as well. My car was barely left with a dent, and driving away from the scene, my car was just fine. However, when I went to drive it this morning, I noticed something was up with the back end. Whenever I hit a bump, it feels like the back end backs up, and fishtails away from the front of the car. Can you tell me what's up with my car, and how much it would be to fix whatever it is? Also, assuming you understand what happened in the accident, and knowing that I and the other woman have insurance, can you tell me who would end up paying for the damage done to her car, and whose fault it really was? Will insurance cover her damage, and if so, whose company is going to cover it? Hers or mine?""
How much would you estimate the annual cost of living to be in central New Jersey?
This would be for a simple lifestyle- one bedroom apartment, utilities, food, clothing, phone, internet, cable, basic car, car insurance, gas, car maintenance, computer, pet, gifts, and a one-week basic vacation. You can provide an estimate both with, and without, a basic health insurance plan premium. I am just trying to figure out about how much it would cost to live in this area. About Health Insurance?
I just went for a job interview this morning, and it seemed to go well. When I was asked if I had any questions about the company, I inquired about their health plan. She turned a little red and said they offered Blue Cross Blue Shield (not uncommon in my region), but then went on to say The company covers 60% and the employee, 40%). She went on to give an explanation about how BCBS charges the company based on the average age of all employees (which in this company's case, is about 45 or something). Anyway, my question is this: What do you think about that? 60 to 40 equation? Which will cost more to insure? 00-04 mustang base or 00-04 mustang gt?
I'm 17 and live in New York. Been driving with a clean record for one year and I currently pay $100/month on my mom's '10 camry. I want to get my own car and I have narrowed everything down to a mustang, but I can't decide between a base model or a gt. I have discounts on my current policy such as good student and drivers ed. I will also take a defensive driving course for an added discount and the new car will also bring about a multi-car policy discount which will be helpful. My mom will be contributing the same $100 towards the car as she is now and the rest I have to pay for by myself. I have heard that the base and gt will cost about the same to insure, but that doesn't seem right considering that the gt has 100+hp more than the base, but people have supported that by saying the base models are involved in more crashes among young drivers. So can anybody set the record straight for me? Please don't give me responses saying that only my insurance agent can tell me that or too high for you to afford. Also would it be a wise decision to drop collision coverage for a huge insurance discount? I don't plan on racing this car.""
Why is Geico Home Owner's Insurance So Much More Expensive Than other Companies?
I have had my home owner's insurance through Liberty Mutual and I pay $865.00 per year for about 110,000 in dwelling coverage plus other coverages as well. However, I just decided as I wasn't doing anything today to check on the competition and I called up Geico. Get this.. Here it is... Geico, for the EXACT SAME COVERAGE I am paying Liberty Mutual $865.00 per year gave me a quote for $4,200.00 per year. WITH ALL COVERAGES BEING EQUAL. I was shocked... The lady told me because I had one claim for roof damage which cost $4,000.00 that justified the increase in coverage. Plus Geico had a higher deductible of $1,500.00. First I don't know anyone paying $4,000.00 for a one year home owner's policy for $110,000.00 in coverage. But does anyone know why Geico is so ridiculously expensive?""
<strong>Thoughts from the Volunteer Side of a Race</strong>
My newest post has been published on https://thelazy.me/2017/06/20/thoughts-volunteer-side-race/
Thoughts from the Volunteer Side of a Race
I’ve run a lot of races; I’ve spectated during a lot of races; but, Saturday was the first time I was an official race volunteer. I was probably not the very best volunteer ever because I definitely found myself distracted and wanting to cheer for the people running by or wanting to take pictures of things! BUT I TRIED! I promise I really tried to be a great volunteer. Lol.
During the entire process, I noticed a few things I wanted to share with you!
Medals are heavy
It might seem like a good idea to load as many medals as possible on your arm but after you keep raising that arm to put medals around people’s necks your arm starts to get tired! (Obviously, you shouldn’t mention this soreness to the people who just ran the race)
Runners don’t always think
Races run out of food. A lot. I’m sure that the race organizers knew how many people signed up and bought extra of everything but they still ran out of donuts, wet cloths, and bananas.
I heard that some runners took four donuts or many, many wet cloths. It really isn’t fair for people to do this. Don’t get me wrong–I’ve done it myself! “Ohhh I love this drink! I’ll take a couple!” But now that I’ve been on the other side I won’t make that mistake again. Runners should take one of everything so that those who finish behind them can have some goodies as well.
Also if you see someone doing something you don’t think is right–don’t be afraid to speak up! If you see someone without a bib trying to take a medal, say something. THIS IS WRONG. I saw at least ten people try this on Saturday. Luckily, we had one volunteer there solely for the purpose of dealing with this. She was an elderly woman and was amazing! I loved seeing her confront these people.
This isn’t illegal, but if you see someone helping themselves to multiple donuts, speak up! If you see someone giving themselves a full on bath with the wet cloths provided, stop them! Most people probably just aren’t thinking. Give them the benefit of the doubt, but don’t be afraid to say something!
Races need more volunteers
The people volunteering before the volunteers like me showed up did all the real work. I talked to one guy who had been there since 3 am. Those volunteers were amazing and the ones who should really get some recognition!
The regular people volunteers were umm… kinda grumpy. Maybe they were just quiet people but I almost felt like they were there because they had to in order to get their school volunteer hours in or else they regretted their decision to sign up. Smile people!! Races are fun!
This goes with the previous point about food and is truly something I wish every race would do! A small gift bag type bag with two handles prepackaged with water and all snacks passed to each runner eliminates the problem of runners taking more than their share of food. It also keeps the line moving when the finish area gets overcrowded! Honestly, there have been so many races where I haven’t taken food at all because I simply can’t hold on to it. Balancing my medal, headphones, phone and the water I’m trying to drink is hard enough. Adding a banana, apple, a bar and a bagel to that is nearly impossible!
The reality is that races simply don’t have enough volunteers. Bags with snacks can’t be given to runners if there aren’t volunteers to do something like that. So many races barely have enough volunteers to do the bare minimum–never mind the extras.
Everyone does not run the same speed
Obviously, I knew this before Saturday!  I generally fall into the middle of most races I run. Half the crowd finishes before I do and the other half finishes after. I KNOW this, but until Saturday I had never seen it.
On Saturday I saw the final runner cross the finish. The volunteers got word that there were 28 people still on the course. Shortly after this, the loud music that had been playing for the past three hours turned off. The silence was deafening and I immediately started freaking out inside. There were people still running and I felt horrible for them knowing that it would be the sounds of silence applauding them across that finish line.
I did what I do so often and I spoke up. (Sometimes I should keep my mouth shut, but not this time!) I commented to the girl from Lululemon beside me that the music should still be going and she immediately agreed. She asked if I thought she should go tell them and I said, “Yes! Go quick!” She took off running and soon you could hear music again. The music remained until that final runner crossed the line.
What if that final runner had just completed their first race? What if they had spent months changing their habits and preparing for this day and were greeted with silence and an empty finish line? Would they ever sign up again? Would they decide to give up on running? What if having people at the finish cheering for them gave them the boost they needed to get through another week?
Running can change a person in so many positive ways, but running can also be negative for many people.
Crossing a finish line should always, always be positive no matter how long it took to get there.
IF YOU’RE NOT RUNNING, YOU SHOULD BE VOLUNTEERING! Runners know what other runners want on the course or at the finish making them the perfect volunteers. I already have a couple other races in mind to volunteer at this year. You should consider it too!
First on my list is the Beaches Jazz Run! Click here if you want to volunteer too!
