The thing that annoys me about people complaining about Edens zero characters being too similar to Fairy Tail (other than not understanding it's intentional, at least the looks) is that how much it reduces characters of both series to a handful of generic adjectives.

People who cry out about how terriblely Mashima treats his female characters then immediately go on to reduce those characters to a handful of traits that you can find in any other story. I'm not gonna defend the fanservice but I can overlook it most of the times because characters in both Fairy Tail and Edens Zero are just that interesting. I dislike the fans who reduce well written female characters to superficial trait more than the needless fansrvice.

So let's talk about the character. For the sake of keeping this (relatively) short I'm only going to focus on the main four from each series. This will also have some spoilers for the manga, but I'm not gonna talk to any scene in particular. For the most part I'm gonna stick to characters and not relationships, romantic or otherwise because this post is way too long as it is.

Natsu and Shiki.

Out of the four these two are the most similar. Although I think a lot of their similarities can be linked to them being protagonist of a action, fantasy, adventure shonen series. They have different powers, different back stories and different goals. While Natsu seem like he's ready to fight at any given moment and he's short tempered, Shiki manages to stay calm most of the times. But when he gets angry it's far more intense than Natsu. While Natsu has cried on several occasions it's nothing compared to Shiki. Because Shiki is a lot more emotional and sensative than Natsu. This isn't a diss on Natsu. Shiki's emotions can get better of him which can be dangerous. Shiki is also a bit more clingy than Natsu and he does have at least a few more brain cells than Natsu. Natsu is friendly but he doesn't actively tries making friends the way Shiki does. For most part Natsu doesn't show any sexual attraction to anyone, Shiki does. I think Shiki just feels things a lot more than Natsu.

Rebecca and Lucy.

Most things that they have in common are just utterly superficial. They are the blonde female lead of their respective series. Their outfits were almost similar in at the beginning. What else? I mean you can go on and say some generic things that applies to most characters, she's sweet, and kind and wEaK (she absolutely isn't but that's a whole different topic). I find that Rebecca has more things common with Natsu than Lucy. Even their physical appearance is not that similar. They have different powers and Lucy tries not to use her powers for fighting, Rebecca has no qualms about it. Rebecca is attracted to dangerous situations in her own wierd way. She was dirt poor and never even considered using eather gear until she joined the crew of Edens Zero. Lucy came from a very wealthy family and was already a wizard when the series started. I mean it's important to understand that a person's circumstances affect them very much. Lucy had the resources that Rebecca didn't. Rebecca's past is also an ongoing mystery. Lucy has longed for people and friends and family before she found fairy tail. While Rebecca can make friends relatively easily she didn't have the same longing. Lucy's dream came true in the second episode. She went on jobs for money and even that mostly for food and rent. Rebecca is far from her goal. Lucy is the smartest person in team Natsu but didn't really knew how the world worked because of her sheltered upbringing. Rebecca isn't the smartest but she does have common sense and she knows the world. She also just goes completely feral while fighting. While Lucy has come a very long way I can't ever imagine her making the kind of expressions Rebecca makes while fighting. If you look at their stories at large while Lucy usually tries to prevent conflicts and disasters. Rebecca's story is more about undoing the disasters.

Grey and Weisz.

Ummmm what? They kinda look alike umm both of them are guys. I'm at a complete loss here. Why do people think they are alike? I took most of images in this post from Hero's where Mashima has mostly kept similar characters with each other. Even then I had trouble finding both of them in the same frame. They just have very different personalities, diffrent powers and different back stories. Plus Grey, Natsu and Erza were childhood friends. That's where his prickly yet friendly relationship with Natsu comes from. Wiesz was just kind of a selfie asshole in the beginning. They just have absolutely nothing in common. Some say he's like Grey and Laxsus and like.. yeah I guess both Wiesz and Laxsus are blond. Lexsus was also an asshole but he had very different reasons and what he did was a whole lot extreme than being selfish for a few episodes.

And lastly

Homura and Erza (and Wendy).

So the moment you see Homura you immediately think of Kagura. They look almost exactly alike. So I don't really get why people compare her to Erza and Wendy. Neither her face, her hair, her clothes or her body type matched Erza and Wendy. Not to mention Kagura has appeared in multiple arcs and had a backstory relating to multiple characters. She might not be a main character but by no means she's forgatable. So the fans who are so concerned about the way Mashima treats his female characters can't even compare Homura to the right character. Also there are literally characters who do actually look like Erza and Wendy. Erza clone is more or less same as Erza personality wise. However they have very different roles in their respective series, different back stories, different relationship with the main characters and their love interests. The Wendy clone just has absolutely nothing in common with Wendy other than her looks. Why is Homura just like Erza? Swords? What else? Erza can change her entire armor and she is more of a warrior or knight type. Homura can manifest swords made of ether and her fighting style is more traditionally eastern than Erza. (I'm not knowledgeable enough to explain what it is exactly). As for Wendy... their hair colour is only few shades apart? They are women? They both breath air? I'm sorry what do they have in common? Homura has no filter and she blurts out the most amazing stuff. Erza can easily be a leader, Homura as much as I love her absolutely can't do that. Not to mention Homura is no where near being as powerful as Erza. Again Homura has a lot more common with Grey than Erza.

Honestly I feel like an idiot for doing this because all of these things I pointed out are pretty obvious. It would be really hard for someone to miss all of it and somehow state that Edens Zero is a copy paste of fairy tail. And yet those idiots exists.

Mashima has drawn dozens if not hundreds of characters. Do people think he couldn't have come up with new designs? I mean making some minor changes to the characters' appearance would make them drastically different from their fairy tail "counterparts". If Rebecca had different hair colour and different clothes in the first few chapters absolutely no one would have compared her to Lucy. My Guess is the characters in Edens Zero superficially resemble characters in fairy tail because Mashima wanted fairy tail fans to jump on Edens Zero as quickly as possible. I don't mind it though. Plus he himself has pointed out the similarities between his characters. He's not trying to "get away with it".

I joke about the character being basically the same, but it's just that, a silly joke. If you try you will find similarities between theses characters. You can take traits and physical attributes from several characters from Fairy Tail and draw superficial comparisons between them. It's it's just that, superficial comparisons.

Both stories have a strong theme of friendship and acceptance at their hearts. But all of the other similarities between them are superficial. But once you start reading/watching Edens Zero, it doesn't take long to realize it is it's own story.
