I am SO sure that my local kookaburra knows I’m obsessed with him because anytime I hear him or see him in my backyard I’m running and pressing my face (and phone camera) to the glass with the giddiest smile on my face.

Also he’s looked right at me with all the judgement a bird with mocking laughter for birdsong can have. I love him.

OH MY GOD YES I AM FOAMING FROM THE MOUTH AT THIS ASK

-> 5 || Lyrebird ( Family: Menuridae)

These are a popular bird for its ability to mimic literally anything from sounds of other birds to construction noises to guns and lawn mowers. These birds are INCREDIBLE, and I was able to see them when I was doing research in Australia!

(They're also pretty gorgeous in my book <3)

-> 4 || Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo)

One of the LARGEST owl species in the world! Females can have a wingspan of up to 6 feet! I adore their calls and I just think they're cool.

Fun fact about BARN OWLS which I will not put on here because they're ok but not my fave, is that they're not TRUE OWLS.

-> 3 || Cockatoos (Specifically Cacatua leadbeateri and Cacatua galerita! In order of photo shown)

Cockatoos in general are extremely impressive in mind power, but they're also the loudest bird I have ever come into contact with. I also studied this ones of my own will in Australia and I resonate deeply with their bouts of baby talk and blood curddling screams. I think it'd be an incredible experience to own one but they are EXTREMELY needy and complicated animals and in order to keep one healthy and happy you'd have to quit your job and devote your entire life to it.

This diver / loon is one of the largest found in the United States! It's my home state's 'State Bird', and I had a huge fascination with these birds when I was younger. They make haunting calls, and every time I hear them I get chills. I used to own like 5 different CDs of just loon calls that I would listen to on repeat because I used to think they sounded like lonely ghosts.

Fun fact, red eyes on water fowl / loons are for under water visibility! The pigment in their eyes help them see better in darker water. The picture below is a breeding adult's signature plumage!

I realize I'm kind of obsessed with Australian birds but these birds really take the cake for me. They're a sub family of KINGFISHERS which are just very cool looking birds on their own in general (MY Big Beaked Babies <3). Everybody knows the signature call of this bird because it's commonly used as a stock sound for jungle noises (despite primarily living in dry areas with eucalyptus trees...?) I had the pleasure of being woke up by these beasts at 3 AM for a whole 3 months because they're the crows of Northern Australia and New Zealand. I actually had the pleasure of watching a courtship happen and a really intense territorial screeching session that followed suit!! I love these birds !!

Not mentioned are crows and any bird of the corvidae family because there could be an entire top 5 corvid post dedicated to them. If you know me at all you know I currently am studying American Crows and Stellars Jay's and their foraging behaviors around areas of public transportation. <3 Thanks for the ask about my literal favorite thing on this planet. I could talk for hours about these creatures!!
