Olympic WoHo Newsletter 2/3
Games are officially happening! If you’re on eastern time, like I am, China took on Czechia last night, at the same time Switzerland played Canada. Japan and Sweden played very early this morning, and after them Finland and USA.
NEWS
Brianna Decker out for the tournament after an injury against Finland, leaving Team USA without their top center. Team USA did not bring any taxi squad players, traveling only with their 23 person roster.
Melodie Daoust was also injured during Canada’s game against Switzerland. Team Canada has not yet provided an update on her status.
ROC and Denmark will make their tournament debuts tonight.
Today’s newsletter will be recapping the last 4 games and previewing the schedule for the following day, with previews from @sonnymilano. You can check out all that below the cut!
GAME RECAPS
SUI [1], CAN [12]: Sarah Fillier opened the scoring for the tournament with her 1st Olympic goal, followed by her 2nd (after a 5+ min goal review). Canada’s depth was on full display with 12 different players recording points, with their third line of Sarah Nurse, Blayre Turnbull, and Rebecca Johnston especially dominant, combining for 14 pts. Captain Lara Stalder scored Switzerland’s only goal 5-on-3, taking advantage of one of the 7 penalties Canada took. Despite the score, Swiss goaltender Andrea Brandli impressed, with 58 saves on 70 shots. Full game details via the IIHF here.
CHN [1], CZE [3]: in their first Olympic games, Czechia beat team China in their first games in 12 years in an exciting, hard-fought 3-1 win. While Czechia led 36-14 in shots, 19 year old goaltender Chen Tiya (Tia Chan) of team China held them to just 3 goals. Tereza Radova (Gӧteburg HC) scored the first goal in Czech women’s Olympic history, assisted by Tereza Vanisova and Aneta Tejralova. Mi Le (Hannah Miller), one of Team China’s import players, scored the lone goal for China, with assists from Lin Qiqi (Leah Lum) and Wang Yuting. Full game details via the IIHF here.
SWE [1], JPN [3]: Japan’s women’s team has been building their reputation for a bit now, and they certainly lived up to it with their 3-1 win over Sweden. Both goaltenders stood out, with Sweden’s Emma Soderberg only letting in 2 against Japan’s relentless forecheck, and Nana Fujimoto saving 26 of 27 shots for Japan. Shiori Koike scored for Japan in the 1st, with Maja Nylen-Persson tying it in the 2nd for Sweden. Still tied after two, Rui Ukita scored the game winner on a breakaway with assists from both Shiga sisters. Haruna Yoneyama called it a morning, scoring on an empty net to finalize things at 3-1. Full game details via the IIHF here.
FIN [2], USA [5]: in a game many anticipated to be much closer, team USA looked like the defending gold medalists they are. Captain Kendall Coyne-Schofield led the way with 2 goals, and Alex Carpenter added another 2. Finnish goaltender Anni Kiesala was solid, with 47 saves on 52 shots, despite earlier controversy. Both goals for Finland came from Susanna Tapani. The biggest story, undoubtedly, is USA losing Brianna Decker to a knee injury. While newcomer Abby Roque was excellent filling in on the 3rd line, recording an assist in the 3rd, losing Decker is a huge blow. Full game details via the IIHF here.
UPCOMING GAMES
DEN vs CHN: coming into their first Olympics, team Denmark is another young team, with Josefine Jakobsen the only player over 30. Cassandra Repstock-Romme, coming off a terrific qualifiers, is expected to start in net. Team China will be looking to bounce back from their 3-1 loss to Czechia, and will likely go with Zhou Jiaying (Kimberly Newell) in net. Kang Mulan (Kassy Betinol) is a player to watch for China.
ROC vs SUI: after a memorable quarterfinal game that saw Switzerland come back from being down 2-0, this is a rematch to watch. Russia’s goaltending choice is still unknown, with all 3 netminders either newcomers or returning after some time. Anna Shokhina is coming back after missing the last worlds, currently 18-34-52 in 22 games with the Russian league this season. Switzerland’s player to watch is Noemi Ryhner, having 2 of 15 shots during Switzerland’s blowout loss to Canada and only being on the ice for one goal against.

If only everyone could share our skills days – A blog by Natalie Senior – First Year B.A. Hons Social Work Student - University of Bradford
To realise the ambitions of our, ‘Take Me As I Am’ blog, we introduced the first year BA (Hons) social work students at the University of Bradford to the use of blogs as a vehicle for personal critical reflection. This was part of our Readiness for Practice module, linked to experiential skills days on diverse social work topics. Students were given the space to explore and practise reflective blogging, as formative pieces that will be used as the basis for their summative assessment. To achieve this we ensured there was dedicated time for thought and reflection (Giroux and Giroux, 2004); for safe and open conversations on topics such as the elimination of violence against women. Given that this academic year (2020/21) has been shaped by the Coronavirus pandemic, and as a consequence our teaching has moved online, the use of blogs and ‘coffee morning – well-being’ Zoom calls has made this an opportune time to introduce this novel form of pedagogy. This approach supports our ethos, that academic support must be tailored to the individual, yet balanced with due regard to our profession: social work. Such a pedagogic approach requires challenging the existing power relations between student and academic; it requires, ‘authenticity’, ‘responsibility’ and ‘engagement’ from both parties. The response from the students to our new approach has been overwhelming and marks a new chapter in our exploration and understanding of the student experience. We offer that the following blogs, written by students, clearly evidence the transformative learning and reflection that has taken place, and the potential that exists in this mutual pedagogy through the use of the reflective blog.
If only everyone could share our skills days – A blog by Natalie Senior – First Year B.A. Hons Social Work Student
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women!
What a day to have the amazing skills day we had today. Speakers with so much knowledge and understanding of subject areas and a real passion for what they do. This clearly cascaded down to students in today's skills day and personally gave me a drive to find out more!!
Today’s skills day made me reflect on my past relationship and really made me see what I was living for 17 years is actually real and was not in my head coercion is real! My partner has also lived through domestic violence and has strong beliefs in stamping out violence against women. Each individual part of today gave me more knowledge and understanding of what me and my partner have both lived, it also made me revisit emotions I felt at the time and helped me to see where I have come to from learning from past experiences. For the purpose of this blog I feel I reflected on action as understood by Schon which outlines the process of reflecting after an event, exploring new information and feelings of how I felt at the time and processing these feelings and actions with new knowledge and understanding of my experiences and how I feel now (Bolton & Delderfirld, 2018). Sharing my day with him gave him a desire to look in to the White Ribbon campaign, we have boys ourselves and he models his beliefs and values in this area strongly with the boys, in this way he is a positive role model for our children aged 6,6 and 12.
The Anah Project is a project aimed at women fleeing all forms of abuse, not only localised in West Yorkshire but throughout the United kingdom (Anah Project, 2020). The Anah project isn't just a service that provides safe accommodation for fleeing women but they offer a support network around these women, they educate women on human rights and increase confidence, self-esteem and independence. They do this through a person cantered approach delivering support through individualised plans based on individual needs. It is widely researched and evident in policies and literature that person cantered approaches are the best way forward, they look at individuals as a whole identifying strengths, weaknesses, preferences, aspirations and in turn has a positive impact on the package of care and support required of each individual (Teater2014, Rutter & Brown,2015).
The project is run through a refuge, where self-referrals and referrals from other agencies can be made. As a student social worker I am already starting to gain a knowledge base of what services are available in the local area; just from today I have knowledge of three individual organisations/ campaigns/ projects where I can signpost or access for support and guidance should I ever need to in my professional role as a social worker (although this seems a million miles away right now!). Knowledge and understanding of such projects and campaigns, equips me with knowledge and understanding to promote the rights, strengths and wellbeing of individuals outlined in the social work standards (SWE,2020) using localised and national services. it also helps me to develop my skills when potentially working with individuals in these circumstances promoting rights, wellbeing and individualised plans drawing on individuals strengths and abilities to create better outcomes for them and work in partnership with wider agencies and professionals (SWE,2020).
The project works on principles of empowerment, collective action, self-help, mutual aid, inclusion and equality (Anah project, 2020). They certainly empowered me today! To empower someone is to give them choice and control at the same time relying on honesty and realism as a two way process (Maclean, 2009, Parrot, 2011). this project aims to do this on so many different levels. All these principles are key points in social work practice and hearing from such inspirational speakers today not only touched me on a personal level and gave me some realisation of my own experiences but gave me a desire to learn more and to better my skills and knowledge and personal understanding which in turn will better my practice as I progress from student to qualified social worker.
The issues discussed today sadly are a huge representation of the societies we live in, some societies more pertinent than others; and the work of social workers and organisations, projects and societies working together to drive down these inequalities of life providing social justice and better outcomes for all is indispensable in the 20th century societies we live in.
Domestic violence happens to both men and women but evidence supports that more women than men are victims of domestic violence, evidence also suggests that the prevalence in black, Asian, minority ethnic and refugee (BAMER) communities is a big percentage of figures recorded. Why is this? Is this because they live in a community where it is accepted to treat women in this way? Is it a community issue and an inequalities in beliefs and values of the community as a whole? Is it religion that leads these beliefs and values? No matter of the answer it is not acceptable against men or women. However research shows that women from BAMER communities are at higher risk of abuse than those from other ethnic groups. Honour based violence, forced marriage, arranged marriage and more recently female genital mutilation have become widely recognised within societies and a call to end these acts of crime is urgently required. Research shows that as a minimum twelve women a year have been killed as a result of "honour based violence", BAME women are impacted by specific forms of violence such as forced marriage and honour based violence, these acts of abuse are experienced in context with domestic abuse experienced by white women (Penny, 2020) The disclosure numbers of those individuals form a black, Asian and minority ethnic groups is worryingly less than that of the general population (Penny, 2020) Educated and knowledgeable professionals with the skills to intervene where required, to be able to identify when these acts are happening and know how to deal with them correctly and with the individuals best interests is vital. Professionals require knowledge of early identifying signs of potential risk or abuse that may raise cause for concern, schools and education settings need to have a rigorous set of policies and procedures for identifying where long periods of absence may be a concern, police services need to be more broadly educated on signs of honour based violence and domestic abuse and know how to intervene and respond to these signs promptly and safely.
More needs to be done to end violence against women and that is through us as professionals including police been knowledgeable enough to intervene, read signs and act promptly and make those referrals. Emphasis needs to be put on schools to educate pupils on safe and health relationships, safe and acceptable behaviours and giving them the knowledge of where to go if they are at risk or feel they may be at risk of harm and encourage them to do this with confidence and reassurance.
The White Ribbon Campaign really stood out for me, as I have said my partner has lived a period of his life with domestic abuse and he strongly believes in ending violence against women. He has strong views and beliefs on this subject which he tries to cascade down to our boys who are still young at present. Values are what us as individuals think or feel should happen and are unique to us all, some people share in the same values and beliefs as others, in life we rely on morality and the experiences of others to inform and create our own moral codes, values and beliefs, as individuals we are highly influenced by present and past experiences and understanding within a context of the society in which we live and grow (Parrot, 2011). He believes these morals and beliefs should be understood from a young age, boys eventually turn in to men and instilling the understanding that it is not acceptable to cause harm to women in any context through sharing experiences with our boys and helping them understand age appropriate situations will hopefully allow them to lead healthy adult life's, knowing right from wrong in a society where domestic abuse is widely seen and appears acceptable. The mission of the white ribbon campaign is for men to commit to never excuse or remain silent about male violence against women using men and boys to act as a catalyst for change and take action to change behaviour both individually and collectively (White Ribbon, 2020).
I had never heard of the campaign before today but me and my partner looked in to this further, the idea of using men as a catalyst to educate other men and young boys is an amazing concept. There are many men out there who share the same beliefs and this needs to be heard it needs to be recognised worldwide.
Learning that the university isn't a recognised organisation who promotes the white ribbon campaign at present gives me a platform at the social justice society meeting later this week to discuss with executive members of how we can work to get the university recognised for its promotion of the white ribbon campaign. Following today and the knowledge I gained I feel I have a better knowledge of what it is and how important it could be for the university to be recognised for this.
Finally to end a brilliant information filled day we heard from breaking the silence.
For many men speaking out about mental health and abuse is a difficult concept no matter what ethnic background they are from. Personal experiences have seen how difficult this can be for men and unfortunately my experiences also saw a failing in services which put the individual at more risk, but whom eventually left the abusive relationship. More needs to be done to encourage men to speak out, it needs to become more socially accepted that men also suffer abuse and have rights to safe and healthy relationship and life the same way as women and children do. There are a number of articles within the human rights act (1998) that states the rights of all individuals. Article le 3 highlights that everyone has a right to not be subject to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Article 8 also outlines everyone has right to live a life with respect to a private life, home and correspondence, Article 9 highlights everyone has freedom of thought, conscience and religion and Article 10 identifies everyone has a freedom to express themselves and hold opinions (Brammer, 2020) Social workers working with individuals discussed above should endeavour to promote these rights trough all areas of practice and help individuals know and understand their rights when living in societies where this is not always so.
Traditional ideologies place emphasis on the masculinity of men in society where unfortunately men are also weakened and shamed by acts of abuse. An article published by the BMJ (1998) exploring the theories and values in health research found that in social constructivist views the male gender is signified by beliefs and behaviours of been hard and strong and this is evidence through practiced social interactions, it is an assumption that these attributes are fixed and evidence shows they do vary across cultures and religions (BMJ, 1998).
Socially it is not accepted that men can be victims of abuse but research shows that this is in fact the case and more should be done to encourage men to speak out and get the help and support they need, in the same way women do. Black and Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) men appear to find speaking out much more difficult than men of other ethnic origins, why is that? Is it because of racism and discrimination stopping them accessing services and support? Is it social and economic inequalities? Is it the huge stigma around mental health? Is it the society which influences very stereotypical views?
BAME communities can experience racism and discrimination in many forms at many different points in their lives and research shows that this can have a negative impact on mental health and wellbeing (mentalhealth.org, 2020). Disadvantages within societies often associated with BAME communities such as poverty and poorer educational outcomes, higher unemployment and contact with criminal justice systems also plays a huge part in individuals speaking out and accessing support they need, they may not know how or where to access help (mentalhealth.org, 2020). As professionals it is important that we know what services are available in the local area, the support groups that run and how to access these. We have a duty to promote quality and inclusion and promote the rights of every individual we work with (SWE, 2020).
There is huge stigma around men's mental health and a lack of understanding on a community level of what this is and how to deal with it, in some communities it is not talked about and in some it is seen in a negative light. This can often discourage people from speaking out particularly men whom are seen to be strong and bold members of society. Research completed by BMI Healthcare (2020) found that one in eight men have mental health problems that they often struggle to discuss or seek help for (BMI, 2020).
Today’s skills day has been really informative and inspiring and given me more of an understanding of services available to people whom I may work with within my professional career. It has allowed me to develop some understanding of why these things take place and understand some professional jargon when it comes to legal procedures and practices. It has also given me a little closure in that self-acceptance of my own experiences were in fact real and should be spoken about and socially we still live in a world where changes need to be made and working together in communities and societies to change the view and disadvantages caused by domestic violence, and other forms of abuse is highly required for better quality of life and living.
I worried about today as it is close to home but now I feel inspired and enthused to get involved where I can and help make that change in society promoting social justice for all!!

SAIL 2017 - Day 3 McDougall + McConaghy - Moth Worlds 2017 - Malcesine, Lake Garda - ITALY
28 luglio 2017 - The early morning Peler from the North provided contrasting fortunes for the fleet of 220 Moths racing day 3 of the McDougall + McConaghy Moth Worlds 2017 hosted by Fraglia Vela Malcesine. After a lunchtime break to repair boats and refuel with more pasta, all fleets were sent back out for a much more sedate afternoon of racing, but again the Garda wind gods had other ideas. By 1600hrs the weak afternoon breeze shut down for the day determining the all important Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets for the Final series. The Green and Blue fleets were sent out early for a 0830 hrs start but a number of competitors stayed ashore to make a late judgement as to whether to sit out the first race of the day. The Blue fleet was sailing the Southernmost course off the picturesque medieval city of Malcesine. However, just the downwind dash to the race course proved too much for many. The Peler was honking a good 20 - 25 knots with some steep waves. After about an hour the PRO got racing started but only about 16 boats got off on time. Some others joined shortly after to complete one lap and get a score on the board. For the second race of the day, race 4 of the event, the breeze did soften into the teens but the conditions were still gnarly and difficult for the club level sailors. Paul Goodison (GBR) took up from where he left off yesterday adding another two wins to keep a perfect scoreline. He was pushed hard but never really threatened by another Olympic medallist from GBR, Simon Hiscocks, who finished with two excellent seconds. Tom Offer from Rock Sailing Club in the UK was also rewarded for his persistence adding a 3,4 to his score. There were good performances for some of the master category sailors, Americas Cup team coach, Philippe Presti (FRA) finished the tough first race and took 5th in the second. Another Americas Cup sailor, Francesco Bruni (ITA) got round the course finishing 5th in the first race. The Green fleet set up at the Northern course which is where the lake is at its narrowest with the mountains either side. The breeze was similar here with 20 - 25 knots and with nasty steep waves. A number of mothies reported boat speeds in the early thirties (knots), recorded on their instruments. This group was randomly loaded with rock stars and proved to be the most dramatic of the day. Double world Moth champion and hot favourite, Nathan Outteridge (AUS) blitzed the first race but agonisingly suffered another major rig failure as his mast broke going at full speed. “It was pretty fresh out there this morning, we were getting mid 20’s and bigger gusts. At the top of our course, it was quite flat but lumpy at the bottom.” “I managed to win the first race but then in the second race I had a pitch pole in the middle of the bottom gate when I was in 2nd or 3rd, and snapped my mast, so that is two DNF’s in two days from two different things, so I am just running over the boat pretty closely now.” Another top contender and long term Moth worlds podium finisher, Scott Babbage (AUS) also suffered further breakages with a vang failure. Even the unflappable current king of sailing, Pete Burling (NZL) suffered a number of stacks as he appeared to be suffering from control issues downwind. Pete finished 8 and 11 for the day. Ben Paton (GBR) usually revels in the strong winds but having crossed the finish line in 3rd in the first race, he was leading race 2 when one of his ample biceps (arm muscles) caused him pain, forcing him to retire. The standout sailor from the Yellow group was another 49er Gold medallist and AC sailor, Iain ‘Goobs’ Jensen who found form and speed in abundance to card 2,1 from the morning session. “I was just getting around cleanly, the boat was working really nicely, it was definitely a survival day, there were big waves and gusts of up to 26 knots, so it was basically whoever didn’t swim was going to be in the top few.” “A few guys had new foils on and we're still just getting used to them, but I had the standard Exocet small foils on and they were going well. It was really good fun, awesome sailing, some guys who had the Velocitek’s on were recording top speeds of 32 knots.” Also enjoying the heavy stuff was Arnaud Psarofaghis (SUI) scoring 6,2. Emma Spiers from Australia did well to finish both races upright with a respectable 19,23 and one of the lightest and smallest mothies, Josie Gliddon (GBR) finished 22,22 with her cut down rig proving a valuable asset. Around 25 boats finished both Green fleet races. The Yellow and Red fleets left the shore around 1100hrs, by which time the breeze was beginning to drop down to a more manageable 12 - 15 knots, fading to 10 or less for their second race of the day. The waves had also dropped resulting in much less boat damage and capsizes. There were 44 finishers in the first race and 50 finishers in the second for the Red fleet on the Northernmost course. The race track looked a bit more one sided with the fleets sailing straight off the start line to hit the steep Western shoreline of the Lake before mixing it up with the local ferries scuttling up the coast, totally mind boggled by what was happening around them! At the front end former Moth world champion, Josh McKnight (AUS), sailing his own Moth design, shared top spot with Rob Greenhalgh (GBR) finishing with a 1,2 for the day. Franco Greggi who is one of 5 boats from Buenos Aires in Argentina, was one of the outstanding performances of the day in the Red fleet, mixing it up with the leaders with a 3,5. “It was a very difficult morning because you have to choose your mast and foils carefully, I chose the smallest foil I had and I am happy I did. My main idea was to start well where there were no boats and try to use my speed in order to get to the front. There are a lot of top sailors with a lot of speed so It was really good to be with the leaders. I am very happy I am in the top 30.” Another of the Corinthian sailors, Dave Hivey (GBR) continued his good form with a 7,3 to keep in the top group overall. The Yellow fleet was the last to start their races, sailing on the Southern course off Malcesine. By the time they started the Peler was all but gone and they raced in a much more sedate 10 - 15 knots with flatter water. Tom Slingsby (AUS) fired another bullet and a 7th to stay in the lead bunch overall. Fellow Australian Laser Gold medallist, Tom Burton finished 4,2 and a third Aussie, Harold Mighell from Sydney, finished 2nd, but with a bad second race finish of 26th. Corinthian, Rory Fitzpatrick, one of a flutter of mothies from Ireland finished with an excellent 7 and 1 in the morning session. The Yellow fleet was the first to be sent out for the afternoon session in a light 10 - 12 knots from the South and flat water however after a long wait the weather gods again foiled the race committee and racing had to be curtailed for the day. With 4 qualification races completed per group, sailors can discard their worst score. So the points table at the end of qualifying shows Paul Goodison (GBR) with a string of bullets followed closely by Tom Slingsby (AUS), with three wins and a discarded 7. Rob Greenhalgh (GBR) sits in 3rd, Iain Jensen (AUS) 4th and Josh Mcknight (AUS) 5th. Pete Burling (NZL) sits in 15th and due to damage Nathan Outteridge (AUS) is down in 35th. For the same reason, Scott Babbage (AUS) sits in 41. Some regular club mothies stack up in the top 20 which is a credit to them in such a high-class field as this. Annalise Murphy (IRL) is the top female competitor, easily qualifying in the Gold group. There is a cluster of women who will race against each other in the Silver fleet. Emma Spiers (AUS) 102, Wakaka Tabata (JPN) 108, Josie Gliddon (GBR) 113 and Emma Gravar (SWE) 114. Of the Masters, Jason Belben of Stokes Bay sits in an admirable 23rd, one place ahead of long time Moth campaigner Rob Gough from Tasmania, Australia. Phil Stevenson, the grand master of the fleet is comfortably in the Silver fleet in 133 spot. The two Italian Ferrighi brothers lead the Youth category (under 23yrs), Gian Marie qualifies in 18th and Stefano in 44th. The Final Series of racing begins tomorrow (Friday) for Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets with a first start scheduled for 1300hrs.

Russian Dressage Team Qualified for the Olympic 2020 Games
Russia will be embodied by a Dressage team at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 after claiming the single spot on offer at the Group C Olympic Dressage qualifier staged at Maxima Park in Moscow (RUS) today. Group C covers Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia, embracing a total of 29 National Federations from FEI Regional Groups l, ll and lll, and the hosts pinned Belarus into runner-up spot in an exciting contest. Olympic Dressage fans from all over the world can buy Olympic Dressage tickets online.
“It was the first time I performed in my motherland; usually I perform in Europe where sometimes I am the only member under the flag of Russia at the event. Here I feel great support and at the same time all of us feel a big responsibility in this tournament. I fully concentrated on my performance, and each of us did everything for the sake of this victory today!” said Russia’s Tatyana Kosterina.
And the talented team from Belarus was gracious in defeat. “We are not rivals, we are all friends here. Of course, the Russian team is very strong. I think that we also managed to perform our best. We have a very young team” said Hanna Karasiova.
Svetlana Evschik, Chef d’Equipe for Belarus, said during the team’s announcement press conference that “the absolute leader of our team is Anna Karasiova and her horse Zodiac. There was a short period when she did not perform but nevertheless she showed good results in Nizhny Novgorod World Cup leg and we hope that the same will happen now.
Volha Ihumentsava competed at the European Championship but her horse was injured a year ago and in April 2019 it just took its first start after recovering. The fourth rider is a young athlete who can still compete in the U-25 category - Anastasiya Dudkova”, she explained.
Davydova (35), who along with Kosterina and Sidneva was a member of the Russian team that finished tenth at the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 in Tryon, USA, threw down the Russian challenge with a highly competitive score of 69.022 from her dark-bay KWPN mare, awakening. And when Kosterina (41) backed that up with 69.087 from her mare Diavolessa VA, then the hosts were already looking very confident.
The Swedish spectators fell in love with Regina Isachkina’s (48) fabulous black stallion, Sun of My Life, at this year’s FEI Dressage World Cup Final in Gothenburg (SWE) where they finished 15th.
Last, to go, this lady whose career highlights include the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, three FEI World Equestrian Games, five FEI Dressage WC Finals and six European Championships produced an effortless performance from the 10-year-old gelding Fuhur who, with the utmost composure, presented fabulous passage, piaffe, and tempi changes to top the individual scoreboard with 72.022.

What is the minimum that one has to rank at Nebelhorn in order to qualify a spot for their country? Or is it just for those who make the podium?
Thanks for asking!
There is no minimum rank, nor is it for those who make the podium.
Available at Nebelhorn are 6 spots each for the men and ladies, 5 dance spots and 4 pairs spots. So, for example (since I seem to have been asked about him twice), Michael Christian Martinez would need to finish in the top six of skaters from countries that don’t already have a spot. This might mean that he finishes 10th overall. Because countries that already have spots can still send competitors (Nebelhorn still being a regular Challenger event as well as the Olympic qualifier), their finish position overall and their finish position for Olympic qualifying won’t match up. (This makes watching Nebelhorn really really nerve-wracking).
Let’s say the overall result is like this (I am literally just picking random skaters here):
1. Jason Brown (USA)
2. Maxim Kovtun (RUS)
3. Brendan Kerry (AUS)
4. Keiji Tanaka (JPN)
5. Misha Ge (UZB)
6. Denis Ten (KAZ)
7. Michael Christian Martinez (PHI)
8. Julian Yee (MAS)
9. Nicolas Nadeau (CAN)
10. Alexander Majorov (SWE)
USA, RUS, AUS, JPN, UZB, KAZ, and CAN all have spots qualified in men already. This means the first qualifier in this instance is PHI, even though he finished 7th. Second qualifier would be MAS, followed by SWE (even though he finished 10th.)
I hope that clears things up?

UE Chapter 23...yet again
Let’s try this again, shall we. I had every intention of working on chapter 23 over my break from school, however, as with the best laid schemes, it did not come to pass. I find that my ability to write is directly linked with how hectic my life is in that moment. The more hectic it is and the less time I have to dedicate to write somehow leads to more motivation and taking time out of a day that is already reserved for something else. I have officially entered my last year of school, which means that hectic is just a part of my day. I am taking 19 credits, am an officer for our school’s section of SWE, and am working two jobs. I think this qualifies as just hectic enough to possibly maintain at least a flicker of motivation for this story, as well as other stories that I am working on.
As for the real reason we all are here, I have chapter 23 of Unexpected Odds open in front of my at this very moment and have in fact added onto a beginning that I finally have decided on keeping. As for when the chapter will be posted, I will not even attempt to give an answer. There is a great deal of middle that I still need to write to bridge the gap between beginning and end.
For now, I leave you all with reassurances that I am very much intending to finish what I started, albeit later than planned.

Army applicants flock 4ID’s recruitment booth
#PHinfo: Army applicants flock 4ID’s recruitment booth
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 21 (PIA) -- Many aspiring army applicants flocked the Army Recruitment Office (ARO) – Mindanao’s recruitment booth during the Static/Kinetic Display and Peace Concert of the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division on January 18-19, 2020 at the Activity Center, Ayala Malls – Centrio, Cagayan de Oro City.
Ariel Pilonggo, 20, who traveled eight hours from Pikalawag, Sultan Naga Dimapuro in Lanao del Norte said, “Akong tan-aw sa mga sundalo usa ka Bayani. Gusto nako mahimong sama nila aron makatabang sa akong pamilya ilabi na sa katawhan.” (I see soldiers as heroes. I want to become like them and help my family especially the people.)
Sweetsel Mae Abero, 22, a recent board passer of Mechanical Engineering from Puntod here also expressed, “The soldiers inspire me and every time I see them I am amazed at how they keep our country safe. I have always felt the calling of service and I believe that being a soldier will fulfill that calling.”
The online registration of the ARO-Mindanao is part of the activities in commemoration of the 50th Founding Anniversary of the 4ID. It is the first step in the application process of becoming Candidate Soldier (CS), Officer Candidate Course (OCC) and Officer Preparatory Course (OPC) trainees. The next steps will be the AFP Service Aptitude Test (AFPSAT) examination, Army Qualifying Exam (AQE) and Special Written Exam (SWE) for OCC and OPC applicants, Physical Fitness Test (PFT), Medical Exams and Interview.
MGen. Franco Nemesio Gacal, Commander of 4ID said, “We are happy and we warmly welcome the influx of applicants who aspire to serve our country. The profession of arms is a very noble road to take and serving the people gives us the ultimate happiness.”
“We encourage our young generation to apply and become one of us rather than being recruited by terrorist groups. The Philippine Army will surely give you a much more secure future,” he added. (4ID,PA,PIA10)

Confession: I am super jealous of @patrickesbjornsson He got to meet @niklasedin and @teamniklasedin at the #MeridianCanadianOpen this week #goals I hope I get to watch the #SwedishVikings in action in person and meet them like Patrick has. * This video needs English subtitles too 😂 Kvinnan talar inte svenska! 😭 I love languages, but they’re very experiential for me - I think I need to live in Sweden to actually learn Swedish. Then once I go back to the US I’ll probably lose it all like Mandarin. Wo bu zhi dao 🤷♀️ * The Swedes are taking on Team Mouat right now. They had to win the C-qualifier this morning to make it to the playoffs. It’s the rematch of the 2018 Euros. I hope experience and determination reign supreme over youthful hunger. Marco Wittmann second in the final race of the DTM season
BMW M Motorsport ended the 2018 DTM season with a strong team result. Marco Wittmann (GER), at the wheel of the BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM, finished second in the final race of the year to take his place on the podium for the sixth time this season. Before the race he had secured his first pole position of the year in qualifying. Wittmann was joined on the podium by race winner René Rast (GER, Audi) and the new DTM champion, Gary Paffett (GBR, Mercedes). All six BMW drivers came home in the top-ten and picked up points in the 20th race of the season.
Bruno Spengler (CAN, BMW Bank M4 DTM) crossed the finish line in sixth place, ahead of Augusto Farfus (BRA, Shell BMW M4 DTM), Philipp Eng (AUT, SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM), Joel Eriksson (SWE, BMW M4 DTM) and Timo Glock (GER, DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM) in positions seven to ten. This represents the first time this year that all six drivers have finished in the points.
BMW ends the 2018 DTM season, with 623 points, in second place in the Manufacturers Championship – behind Mercedes but ahead of Audi. Wittmann, with 164 points to his name, is the best-placed BMW driver in fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship. Glock is just behind him in fifth place with 144 points. BMW Team RMR ends the year in fifth place in the Team competition. Eng is the rookie of the year with 102 points.
Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director):
“The DTM season draws to a close with another exciting race in Hockenheim – with Marco Wittmann on the podium, all BMW drivers in the points, and a thrilling conclusion to the title race. It has been another spectacular season, with highs and lows for us. One positive aspect was definitely the fact that we were well positioned across the board. Every one of our six regular drivers finished on the podium at least once over the course of the season and we claimed four race wins. There were a lot of highlights, including the fantastic battle between Timo Glock and Gary Paffett at the season-opener in Hockenheim, Marco Wittmann’s victory on home soil at the Norisring, and Alex Zanardi’s unforgettable outing in the night races at Misano. On the whole, the 2018 DTM once again thrilled fans with fantastic motor racing – exactly as it should do. We would obviously have liked to have been battling for titles right down to the finish. Despite many individual successes, the big success has evaded us this time. Congratulations to Mercedes and Gary Paffett on winning the Manufacturer and Driver titles: it is hard to believe that Mercedes are turning their back on this fantastic series and its fans. We are now looking forward to the 2019 season – with a new car, new opponents and, without any doubt, the same enthusiasm for this series.”
Stefan Reinhold (Team Principal, BMW Team RMG):
“Marco had a slight issue at the start, but after that he had superb pace. Our guys had top strategies for all three cars. It has been a tough weekend for us. The guys in the pit lane have done a great job to get the cars ready. I would like to say a big thank you to the team for their efforts this season. It has been fiercely-competitive. However, we never gave up and were rewarded for our efforts again today. I am looking forward to returning to Hockenheim with the guys for the start of next season.”
Marco Wittmann (#11 BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG – qualifying result: 1st place, race result: 2nd place, points: 164):
“I am very happy with second place, particularly after the bad day we had yesterday. The guys worked extremely hard and I was able to thank them with pole position and second place. Unfortunately, we came up just short of taking the win, but René was simply a bit too quick today. The podium is still a nice way to end the season.”
Augusto Farfus (#15 Shell BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG – qualifying result: 5th place, race result: 7th place, points: 56):
“We gave it everything and had decent pace – but it was simply not good enough for a better position. We did manage to make up a few places and score some points at the end. I would like to thank BMW Motorsport and BMW Team RMG. We have had a tough season, but the guys have always done their very best. Unfortunately, the points total does not reflect our true performance.”
Timo Glock (#16 DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMR – qualifying result: 10th place, race result: 10th place, points: 144):
“I have no idea what was wrong today. We had such good pace yesterday. We could not do much on either set of tyres in qualifying, when we were well behind Marco. We had absolutely no balance in the car on the first set, just under and oversteer. When we switched to the second set, it was just about okay, however the opportunity had gone by that point. Congratulations to Gary Paffett on winning the title.”
Bart Mampaey (Team Principal, BMW Team RBM):
“First of all, congratulations to Gary Paffett on winning the Drivers’ title. After yesterday, we worked very hard to allow the cars to qualify higher up the grid. We managed that and finished with all three drivers in the points. That is a nice end to what has been a tough season. The team introduced two rookies to the DTM. We did our best and made great progress over the course of the year. I am proud of the team.”
Philipp Eng (#25 SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMR – qualifying result: 8th place, race result: 8th place, points: 102):
“Eighth place is okay. It would have been nice to have been on the podium again. At least I have been the top rookie. Today’s race was great fun. We had good pace and the right strategy. In the end, I was unable to raise my game. All in all, however, it was okay.”
Bruno Spengler (#7 BMW Bank M4 DTM, BMW Team RBM – qualifying result: 4th place, race result: 6th place, points: 85):
“The start was very good. I was a bit cautious in the first two corners, as I did not want to get involved in the title race. As such, I was a bit careful when Gary and René were involved. Later on, I tried to stay in touch, but we did not have the pace – particularly in the first stint. The second stint was a bit better. On the whole, it was a positive day. We will now focus on development work over the winter.”
Joel Eriksson (#47 BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RBM – qualifying result: 7thplace, race result: 9th place, points: 72):
“It was a tough race today. Our pit stop was perhaps a little too early. As such, we struggled a bit with the tyres later. Otherwise, my race was okay. The season has been really good for me. I have learned an awful lot and made great progress. My personal highlight was obviously the win at Misano. It has been great fun and I would like to thank BMW for this fantastic opportunity.”

Jeremy Van Horebeek and Covington Take Pole Position in Valkenswaard
The first day of the MXGP of Europe has wrapped up in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands where MXGP, MX2 along with EMX300 and EMX125 both presented by FMF Racing took to the demanding Dutch Circuit. Tricky conditions combined with cool temperatures would lead to a memorable day of racing. Heating up with their first pole positions of 2018 were Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington in MXGP and MX2 respectively.
Alongside the MXGP and MX2 stars were the first round of the European Championships of EMX125 and EMX300 both Presented by FMF Racing. The group of 300cc racers was composed of both former champions and upcoming stars. Last year’s title competitors, Brad Anderson and Mike Kras, again found themselves at the front of the field but the young Belgian Greg Smets would take the lead from Kras early on his way to his first ever European Championship Race win as Kras and Anderson took 2nd and 3rd. In EMX125 class former 85cc Junior Motocross World Champion Rene Hofer also took his first European Championship race win against a field of more than 80 riders at the start of the day including Emil Weckman and Mario Lucas Sanz in 2nd and 3rd.
MXGP Off of the start of MXGP Qualifying Race Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek took the Holeshot but Dutch sand master, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, passed the #89 almost immediately.
Behind Herlings and Van Horebeek was last year’s MXGP of Europe overall winner, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin and 2016 MXGP World Champion, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser. Gajser who is returning from an injury suffered only one month ago showed he wasn’t phased by the pressure or the conditions.
First to press onto the back wheel of Gajser was Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Shaun Simpson, however near crash and impressive save by Simpson allowed Gajser some space to breath. Though it was not long before Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli slid past a rattled Simpson and closed on the Slovenian.
Simpson would later make a mistake which could not be saved and so too did Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP’s Romain Febvre. However the most notable crash and mistake was the one of Jeffrey Herlings while leading. The #84 tucked the front wheel on the landing of a double resulting in a crash. Herlings once going again, pulled into Pit Lane convinced that he had broken his front wheel. As the mechanics of Herlings rushed to swap out the wheel Van Horebeek led.
Herlings in the press conference said: “There was something wrong, obviously I went down and came in (to Pit Lane). I thought I had a broken wheel, which it wasn’t, but it doesn’t matter, it is racing and things like that happen. I’m feeling good, I’m feeling strong so I just need 2 good starts tomorrow from that position and work from there.”
The other Dutch Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider, Glenn Coldenhoff worked his way into 5th after passing Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer. In the end Jeremy Van Horebeek took the Qualifying win ahead of Paulin, Gajser, Cairoli, and Coldenhoff while Herlings, who rejoined the race in 35th, qualified 19th.
Jeremy Van Horebeek in the press conference said: “The track suites me well, I feel good, and you know on this kind of track you just have to enjoy and ride smooth because if you ride too aggressive you won’t go fast. It was a good day, I had a good start and I think that is the key, just to start in the top three and ride your own race.”
MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), 24:48.416; 2. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:07.244; 3. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:11.955; 4. MX2 The MX2 Qualification Racing at Valkenswaard was just as demanding and surprising as that of the MXGP class. At the start of MX2 Qualifying Race Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado flew off of the grid to a substantial Holeshot.
Pursuing the #61 was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington. Covington’s struggle to feel comfortable at the opening round of the season in Patagonia Argentina and the past two weeks of training was unnoticeable in his riding today.
Prado’s Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate, Pauls Jonass followed Covington as Covington’s Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Thomas Kjer Olsen chased Jonass.
2017 MX2 podium finisher, Brent Van doninck who now rides for the Husqvarna 8biano Motorsports team put in a solid race for 5th place to position himself well for a repeat of last year’s performance.
Back at the front a last lap error from Prado came up costly as tried to negotiate his way past lapped riders. Prado fell which let both Covington and Jonass get by before the finish allow Covington to score his first pole position of the new season.
Covington in the press conference stated: “The start was so important today…I am proud I got a good start behind Prado and I followed him for most of the race just trying to stay with him. He (Prado) was going pretty fast at the beginning but in the end we came into some lappers and I was able to capitalize on his mistake down the hill.”
Honda 114 Motorsports’ Hunter Lawrence struggled to bring his Argentinian success into the European qualifying race as he shifted between 8th and 9th position before sneaking into 6th at the finish.
Another rider who did well in Argentina but came up short during qualifying was BIKE IT DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei. Sanayei who led laps in Patagonia – Argentina will head the start in 16th tomorrow.
Sanayei in the press conference said: “After Argentina I got pretty sick, I am just kind of getting over that and thankfully I could train this week. I felt confident coming into this weekend but everything didn’t add up today.”

The GP F1 track transformed into jumping arena
Like a veritable theater stage the Port Hercules in the Principality transforms itself periodically. Even when the last remnants of the F1 Grand Prix were still in place waiting to be disassembled, over 1100 tons of sand transported on 60 trucks were carefully spread over the quay on the southern dock, at the foot of the Prince’s Palace, to create a 2025m2 ephemeral arena designed by Luc Musette, plus 1100m2 paddock for 195 horses, an spectator’s tribune, stunning VIP corporate hospitality loges, chic boutiques and the double deck riders’ club, for the traditional and highly anticipated 13thedition of the International Jumping of Monte-Carlo, from June 28-30, 2018, one of the most prestigious stops of the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT).
A view of the arena in Monaco@Mario Grassia/LGCT 2018
Flawlessly organized and presided by Diane Fissore, and Jan Tops, professional Gold medal rider and leader in the horse-trading world, the competition is one of the highlights of the LGCT, and it is the third most important sporting event in the Principality together with the F1 Grand Prix and the Tennis Masters.
Each lap of the LGCT is a Grand Prix of Euro 300,000, with approximately Euro 100,000 for the winner, allotting the emerging points to the general classification: at the end of the circuit, the eighteen best riders will share a purse of Euro 1,000,000. In Monaco the total purse amounts to Euro 393,500 with €285,000 allocated to the Grand Prix prize. A wonderful three-day program including amateur competitions during the day followed by top-level fixtures after sunset.
A cast of star riders & horses on the Monaco’s arena
Only the 30 world best are invited to this illustrious competition with a truly exception casting of riders in a breathtaking venue. The top three in the LGCT ranking came to compete in the Principality: Two-time LGCT Champion Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) leads the field on 172 points, just a LGCT Grand Prix win away from Ben Maher (GBR) in second who has 143 points overall. Breathing down his neck is another two time LGCT Champion, Scott Brash (GBR), who sits a further 12 points away.
Former winners were back in action this weekend including 2017 winner Alberto Zorzi (ITA), 2016 winner Emanuele Guadiano (ITA) and 2014 winner Bassem Hassan Mohammed (QAT). Amongst the stars, big names, rising talent and legends of the sport battled for the coveted LGCT Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco presented by Sapinda win, one of the most prestigious accolades in show jumping.
Completing the list of competitors were: World Number 1 Harrie Smolders (NED), John Whitaker (GBR), Marcus Ehning (GER), Bertram Allen (IRL), Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE), Simon Delestre (FRA), Maikel van der Vleuten (NED), Roger-Yves Bost (FRA), Marlon Zanotelli (BRA), Michael Whitaker (GBR), Georgina Bloomberg (USA), Pieter Devos (BEL), Jennifer Gates (USA), Gerco Schroder (NED), Philipp Weishaupt (GER), and Sheikh Ali Bin Khalid Al Thani (QAT).
Equestrian Federation team of Monaco claimed victory
On Friday, June 29, 2018 in the evening, the Longines Global Champions Tour of Monaco once again played host to the 8th edition of the Longines Pro Am Cup on Friday evening, which sees an amateur and professional rider pair up to compete for the coveted title with a focus on speed and agility.
Launched by Patron Charlotte Casiraghi in 2010, it emphasizes the family spirit of the sport, with its pace and relay format the audience loves. Set over two rounds, 13 teams took part – including reigning champions Team Sapinda, as well as Team House of Sillage, Team Monte-Carlo Polo Team and Team Virtus, all battling to jump clear and with the fastest combined time.
As the competition went on the eight qualifying teams continued to fight for a podium finish as the crowd clapped and cheered for the riders. Victory went to Mona Ferry and Christian Rhomberg of Team Equestrian Federation of the Principality of Monaco, second to Florence Schwizer-Seydoux and Roger-Yves Bost of Team Equitheme, and third to Team Monaco Aces featuring Jeanne Sadran and Julian Epaillard.

A smiling Christian had said after his blistering round: “It’s fun! I’m lucky I have a fast mare that makes even a slow rider like me fast! My teammate did a really good job. I just tried to make her go faster in the second round, but we have a few problems with our language – I don’t speak French!”
Breen claimed victory in thrilling LGCT Grand Prix Prince of Monaco
Under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the 9th leg of the Championship race is a long-standing and popular stop on the calendar, with illustrious names listed on the winners’ roster over the years. The Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix Prince of Monaco took place on Saturday, June 30 in the evening, the last day of the competition.
With 35 riders qualified, Ireland’s Shane Breen, who was the last rider to go, took the biggest win of his career and dashed Alberto Zorzi’s (ITA) hopes of a back-to-back Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix Prince of Monaco Presented by Sapinda win, after a spectacular performance aboard Ipswich van de Wolfsakker on Saturday, June 30, 2018. Breen’s win means he is the latest addition to the GC Playoffs, with a ticket to the elite line-up in the Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix that will take place in Prague this December.

Breen finished just tenths of a second ahead of Zorzi and Fair Light van T Heike with Denis Lynch (IRL) and RMF Bella Baloubet taking third.
This would be the biggest win of Breen’s career, and the Irishman punched the air in triumph ecstatic at his win, and place in the GC Playoffs. Breen was quoted saying: “This is my biggest career win and my first time winning at the LGCT Grand Prix. It is a great honor to be here and to be part of the GCL – it’s a great atmosphere. Ipswich is quite a green horse at this level and has had a few fences down this season. We’ve been knocking on the door but today he jumped fantastically.
He was surprisingly relaxed as he can be quite sharp and has a lot of nervous energy but that was in our favor this evening in Monaco. He produced two super rounds and with Dennis leaving the door slightly open and Aberto with a fantastic quick round, the guys on the ground were saying that if I could do the same numbers my horse is naturally very quick. When I turned for number one, I didn’t have a flier at it, then I went nine strides to the second jump and I had to remind myself not to panick.I got the double jumped and moved on a bit then and fortunately when addressing the last I saw a good stride and took it! I’m now in the LGCT [Super Grand Prix] and I’m elated – it’s an elite group of riders, so I hope I can take Ipswich there again and do well.”

Competing in front of a royal audience
H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, H.R.H. Princess Caroline of Hanover and Charlotte Casiraghi watched from the Royal Hospitality as the first riders navigated the exceedingly technical course in the compact sand arena.
Members of Royal Families from around the world, including H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Prince Talal of Jordan taking their seats for a feast of top show jumping. Bill and Melinda Gates with ringside seats were clearly absorbed in the highest level of show jumping in which their daughter Jennifer competes. The family cheered on Jennifer’s trainer Harrie Smolders (NED) as they watched the Grand Prix from the VIP area.

SPRINGFIELD — Clair Yiting Gu was nearly 2,000 miles from Springfield Technical Community College, but she felt at home at the annual conference of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
Gu was one of eight STCC students who traveled to Austin, Texas, for the SWE conference to join 14,000 attendees, including college students, academic women, and professional women.
“It’s awesome,” said Gu, a computer science student who spoke from the STCC campus after returning from the conference. “You see a lot of women engineers there. You feel like you are not alone. It’s very exciting.”
Another computer science student who attended, Darya Bandarchuk, loved the opportunity to meet women who are interested in engineering. “It was great. It was my second time going to a SWE conference. There are not a lot of events like the SWE conference. You get completely immersed in engineering. You get to go to a career fair, which is a great opportunity,” she said.
The conference, which was held in October, is billed as the world’s largest conference and career fair for women in engineering and technology. STCC prepares students for careers in the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“As a technical community college, but also as a ‘STEMinist’ institution, I am thrilled our students had the opportunity to attend this important conference,” said STCC President John Cook.
Beth McGinnis-Cavanaugh, professor of Physics and Engineering at STCC and the SWE faculty advisor, helped raise money to bring a contingent of students and three faculty and staff to the conference. She said STCC was better-represented than any other community college in the country.
The conference provided an opportunity to attend workshops and meet with major employers from technology companies such as Google, Amazon, and Texas Instruments, among others. STCC students who want to transfer after receiving their two-year associate degree were able to meet with representatives from four-year engineering programs.
STCC students participated in presentations at the conference. McGinnis-Cavanaugh’s presentation focused on a proposal to form a SWE network among the 15 Massachusetts community colleges. STCC staff member Isabel Huff presented on gender stereotypes that can hold women back from pursuing careers in STEM.
“They’re exposed to students from all over the country, mainly from four-year schools,” said McGinnis-Cavanaugh. “They’re also exposed to a lot of professional women and professionals who are there recruiting. They have a huge career fair. They do on-site interviews and résumé reviews. For our students, it’s great exposure. They don’t generally have these kinds of opportunities.”
While the employers were mainly looking to hire students graduating with four-year degrees, STCC students received a tremendous opportunity to practice interview skills, obtain feedback on their résumés, and chat with professionals in the field, she added. As engineering is still a field dominated by men, most companies are seeking a more diverse workforce and are eager to hire qualified women.
SWE, a national professional society for women in engineering and related STEM fields, supports collegiate sections nationally and internationally. STCC is one of only 14 community colleges in the country affiliated with SWE. The chapter, formed in 2014, comprises about 20 women majoring in engineering and science transfer and engineering technologies.
“It was an unbelievable event, and it was great that the college supported their trip,” McGinnis-Cavanaugh said. “We had at least one student who had never been on a plane before. To have an opportunity to visit a city like Austin, which is a real tech hub, and then be with 14,000 women who are in STEM, is pretty incredible.”
