Tagged by my bestie, sometimes beta, always cheerleader @emi--rose. Rules: Share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. (I'm going to follow her lead and tag one with each fic.)
There’s a flash in Ed’s eyes, jaw working with unexpressed tension. (end up several worlds away) (the missing scenes sequel to for the benefit of all the broken hearts, this chapter is about Ed and Mary.) tagging @knotwerk for the comment today that was TOO LONG FOR AO3, god bless.
It’s one of those rare weeks when they’re not just in the same time zone, not just under the same roof, but under their roof. (for the benefit of all the broken hearts) (my surprisingly long fix-it sequel to the weird and wonderful meta-fiction sort-of-but-not-RPF Water Flowing Underground) tagging @veeagainsttheday for excellent betaing and critical reassurance early on in the project.
Stede loves camping. (BIGFOOT STOLE MY HUSBAND) (idk it's modern AU monsterfucking I GUESS) gotta tag @mxmollusca for this one.
It all started when Stede took Ed to be his plus one at his ex-wife's wedding. (Commit to the Bit) (modern AU where Ed and Stede talk themselves into getting married as a bit; reader I lived this one) tagging @nekosd43 who is not a pirates person, but who was a very good friend to me and Ryn and honestly part of how we originally got to be friends, what with all their excellent taagnus writing.
Thing is, once he gets a break from the routine (wait around, raid, drink, cry, repeat) he doesn't really want to go back. (can't cross the same river twice) (part 3 of "the devil's threeway", a very weird way to get to a reunion fic but I think it works) tagging @chuplayswithfire who kept giving me good ideas for this series.
Later, much later, Stede realizes he can divide his life into two parts, split by that exact moment: when by all rights he should have been dead, gut-stabbed and strung up, and instead the most beautiful man he’d ever seen strolled up to him through fire and smoke and men screaming. (Hungry for love, ready to drown) (me @ me: jfc that's a longass sentence) (Stede POV canon retelling, my very slow love letter to canon. YES the next chapter is on its way, I just finished an editing pass that it very much needed before actual betaing) tagging @red-sky-in-mourning because things they have written or reblogged are DEFINITELY in my project notes.
He has to cut him off. (A secret third thing) (oh look more Stede POV retelling! this time of Water Flowing Underground: I woke up at 3am less than a week after reading WFU with the beginning of this fic.) tagging @gaypiratebrainrot for writing the thing that melted and reformed my brain, and because this fic ended up being the start of a very good friendship.
It turns out there is a second fucking pirate ship trying to board this stupid little Dutch freighter. (Cannonball) (part 2 of devil's threeway, this is the one where Ed gets together with Anne Bonny and Mark Read and also cries a lot) tagging @adreamingofguns, who hasn't written any gay pirates fic, but who has a Special Interests in pirates and contributed to my thoughts about Mark.
It’s not that he prefers the beard, exactly. (nice either way) (the tiny Beard Discourse fic) tagging @blakbonnet for beard discourse reasons.
For Frenchie, that afternoon has the unreal quality of a dream as he sits cross-legged on the deck of The Revenge sewing an addition to Blackbeard’s flag. (what makes me kind) (rest in pieces, this fic) (listen. I had an idea. I had a LOT of ideas. but I kept getting sidetracked. see: everything else on this list. someday? weirder things have happened but idk. if nothing else someday I might just post all the fragments I have written, because some of them I do like very much.) tagging one of my favorite post-S1 longfic writers, @not-nervous-jester. (who has actually finished theirs! two of them!)

All of this + the scene in season 1
Like, it was significant enough that I remember someone messaging (if I remember right) Alex Sherman and asking if that was intentional, to further signify him as a racist (at least a little bit, or unconsciously and ignorant) after he tried to sell out the Revenge to the British - you know, pretty much the most historical symbol of colonization - and the deal he strikes is that he can “take responsibility over Ed” while he does so. And Alex had to say, paraphrasing, “No no no, there were other scenes of Izzy being a dick that were cut for time, he didn’t especially abuse the crew members of color, that was just the only scene we kept to show he was an asshole and a bad captain.”
So, like, they are at least a little bit aware of the fact that season 1 Izzy had some hints at racists acts/intentions, and then adding in these two scenes from season 2? Like, y’all didn’t try to keep an extra eye out after last season? Didn’t want to make sure you didn’t lean into that as you raced through a redemption arc that didn’t even show the audience a real learning curve, we just jumped right into an emotional break down and everyone loves him?
Idk. I really, really don’t like the way they handled Izzy, and season 2 just keeps making it worse and worse, in my humble opinion.
They really needed a lot more time, and they really needed someone watching out for these things if they didn’t want to keep him in an antagonist position who’s going to be served his comeuppance by the end. It’s weird. And I’m so happy when I’m not the only one seeing these things!
ngl the writer's room of ofmd has disappointed me for sure in one way, and it's that they have now let izzy make two racist comments without karmic punishment or a response from anyone else. like, first he's calling ed a wild dog, and then he's cracking wise about mistaking ed for roach?
come on. come on.
comparing an indigenous man to not just a dog but a wild one in need of putting down, and then saying "oh i thought you were one of the other brown people on the ship" come on. come on.
if he's going to have this rushed redemption arc (the bones of which are alright, but the execution of which is poor), they could at least not have him be a racist throughout it.
#Cae Needs You All To See This Too#Izzy Critical#I was noticing these things too and it just feels slimy#There are more than a few things I'm disappointed with season 2 about#And some of them are my fault for expecting a lot and being a fanfic writer who wrote my own wishes for season 2#And I definitely feel like the comedy and stuff is still there#Hilarious as always and a lot of the jokes land well#But a lot of the little things are really feeling... just ignored or forgotten?#Oluwande and Jim's relationship feels like it was completely changed from season 1#Ivan was completely written out with a one-liner - the Swede is only in a few scenes - Jenkins said Buttons might be gone for good#Frenchie still hasn't sung once - but Izzy has#We haven't seen Frenchie and Wee John hang out at all#Oluwande just isn't in any position of semi-authority/advising Stede like he did in season 1#Even though he was even voted to be the next captain afterward!#They gave Frenchie another grift scene but it doesn't wrap in Oluwande again which would've been a fun call back#Idk - There's more that I wish was done differently#I think they prioritized the comedic stuff a little too much and shifted focus away from the anti-racist and anti-conformity stuff#Which is a shame in my opinion#Cae Has Lots of Feelings About Our Flag Means Death#Our Flag Means Death#OFMD#Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Spoilers#Our Flag Means Death Spoilers#OFMD Spoilers#OFMDS2#OFMD s2 spoilers#Izzy Hands#Israel Hands#OFMD Meta

AUTHOR OF THE WEEK: @monksofthescrew
Our final feature of this week's AOTW is the lovely and always kind Hugo ♥️ Getting to know her these past few weeks has been such a joy and it's so not a surprise that they're such an earnest and fluffy writer, with oodles of love for their friends and the show. Please read on to find out about Hugo's secret sorrow (the word she thinks she uses a lot):
What's your writing process like? Do you start with the beginning or the end? Do you write in order or as the scenes come to you?
I generally start with the beginning and write forward, but then I like to outline retroactively and see if there are any chunks that would be better suited elsewhere in the story. I sometimes have to scribble down an idea for a later scene when it comes to me, but then I sometimes forget to return to it, or figure out that it doesn't fit after all. And sometimes it's not so much a scene as it is a *vibe*, and sometimes it's just, like, a mini-revelation about the emotional arc, or some other little tidbit. I'm definitely still trying to find the right process, though, because mine is absolutely unreliable and I haven't finished anything at all or even really managed to work meaningfully on anything in an age and a half.
Favourite Ed or Stede characteristic or mannerism that are dear to you (Ed liking marmalade, Stede and burying his feelings, etc)?
Yes, Ed's sweet tooth is important to me. Yes, Stede saying one single, heavily veiled thing once and being like, "I have now bared my entire soul to you, right?" is important to me. Ed's brilliance is non-negotiable. Their mutual softness is very important to me. Yeah, their shitty fucking dads are really important to me. Both their childlike qualities and their age. Shearwater pointed out that Stede has so much love to give that he's never been allowed to give before and Ed needs so much love and never having had anyone to give it to him, and I can't stop seeing that now. The way they instantly know one another on a level neither of them has ever experienced before.
What is the one word that you think you use a lot?
HEEDLESS for fucks' sake. Also STEEL as a verb. Is it the double Es? Why am I like this?
Do you have a beta reader? Have they made you a better writer?
YES. I have been swapping betas with @xoxoemynn for, oh my god, two years this August (happy almost-anniversary, darling) and not only has Marianne made my writing better (it was at her prompting that I ended up writing some of my very favorite paragraphs I have ever written) but beta-reading *her* writing has made me a better writer, and also a better thinker. Marianne is absurdly generous with the sandbox that is her brilliant mind and her open heart, and thinking and talking through ideas and theories with her has taught me so much about storytelling.
Why OFMD?
I think the characters, both as written and acted, have so much complexity and nuance, and there's so much room for interpretation, which makes this such a fun sandbox to play in. The canon can support practically any reading. Also, this fandom boasts a really mind-boggling amount of talent, and some of the absolutely loveliest people I've ever had the good fortune to meet.
Please head over to @ofmdlovelyletters and send your love for Hugo and all your favourite authors (and authors of the week 😈 watch that blog for some special letters coming your way)

20 Questions for Fic Writers
thanks for the tag, @seasidesandstarscapes !! 💖
How many works do you have on AO3? 40 :)
What's your total AO3 word count? 137,805
What fandoms do you write for? my active ones right now are the boys in the boat and gloryhammer, but i consider myself a terror/the north water writer despite barely touching any of my fics in yearsssss. i love boat media what can i say !
Top five fics by kudos? i was something made for god to label fragile (now i'm stuck) - 1149 (OFMD) out of time, eternal heatstroke - 641 (OFMD) sure as the sun come up from the south - 380 (OFMD) steppin' around in a desert of joy - 311 (Ted Lasso) I'm a stitch away from making it (and a scar away from falling apart) - 279 (IT Chapter 2)
Do you respond to comments? yes!!! sometimes uhhh years late but that's only because i forget that i only replied in my head. i think even the smallest comment deserves a thank you :) <- tiny fandom rarepair enjoyer mindset
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? amazing question i could list like 6 immediately with vastly different vibes but i'm gonna pick it always leads to you in my hometown (The Boys in the Boat) because i looove the ending. those men are not having a good time with their emotions and marital status.
What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? i HAVE to go with hustling for the good life (never thought i'd meet you here) (Bullet Train) it's one of my fave fics ever and i love the ending so much 🥺🥺 need those guys to be happy (AND ALIVE!) forever and ever
Do you get hate on fics? oh i used to get death threats yeah!! deeply whatever 2 me though i'm writing for me and the 5 freaks who live in my pocket
Do you write smut? less and less lately but yeah :)
Craziest crossover? i don't write crossovers :)
Have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i know of, thankfully!
Have you ever had a fic translated? no, and i'm not sure i'd be into it!! i wouldn't want a translation in a language i don't know because i wouldn't be able to ensure that things are worded the way i want them to be. i've translated my own writing before and i know that's a struggle even when i'm the original writer so you know.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? also no, once again i'm very very controlling about how i want my writing to look and feel and taste. i couldn't write together with someone else without ruining our relationship i think
All time favorite ship i will always always always come back to eddie carr/doc thorne from the second jurassic park novel. they're so crazymaking i'm forever obsessed with them.
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? a so far unnamed continuation of call to rise (Gloryhammer) that lives as a long ass outline and several disjointed scenes in my wip folder. i haven't forgotten about her but i have also not made any progress :(
What are your writing strengths? NOT narration/dialogue balance that's for sure!! i'll get so carried away with my beloved descriptions and fun narration that i'll forget to write a single line of dialogue until i'm 600 words in
Thoughts on dialogue in another language? it's one of my big fic icks to be frank 😭 i simply don't think switching back and forth between two different languages does either one justice. the rhythm is different! the vibe is different! it's always always jarring and a lot of times not done well at all. i avoid it when i'm reading and i don't write it
First fandom you wrote in? everyone can judge me for this. it was hollywood undead rpf
Favorite fic you've written? posssssibly let me under your skin (The Terror) i just like the vibe so so much. absolutely miserable depressing yet tender small town armitozer. beloved!!!! but i have so many unpublished ones i absolutely adore, it would be hard to pick. also i didn't feel like linking my other fav fic which is the dead doviest dead dove i've ever written. it fucks though
If you were forced to write only one genre for the rest of your life (like James Patterson lol) what would you want it to be? keeping this makeshift 20th question by seasides because i like it :) my preferred genres would be either period fiction (not specifying when because i want the wiggle room) or nonfiction. i would LOVE to write nonfiction. who's got the time though
i'm gonna tag @duesternis @derry-rain @smolsleepyfox and @zonkutonshorrifyingpeenie if you guys feel like it :))

intro post
I'll probably add more to/change this later; I've just needed an intro post for a while, and this is what I could think of. you should probably remind me to update it if this section is still here after like six months lol.
name/pronouns/age/gay shit~
honestly you can call me whatever, but I probably won't know you're talking about me unless you use vel/velvet.
prefer they/it; any pronouns are fine.
I'm probably non-binary I guess.
I'm an adult.
I basically just identify as queer at this point, but I'm like,, vaguely aroace-spec probably? still figuring it out. I'm actually very happy to talk about it more specifically, but I might have to sit you down for an entire day to explain it lol.
what I do/post~
I mostly post fandom stuff, and my original posts include a lot of art + occasional meta. I'm starting write fic too, so that might be a more regular thing in the future :)
other accounts~
@/velvetygames -- explicit nsfw twitter/x account, not very active
@cornerbytes -- old dragon prince account that I will probably revisit when the new season comes out
@/velvet_games -- ao3 account
nsfw~
I post occasional nsfw here (never super explicit; that's saved for my twitter); it'll be tagged #nsft.
fandoms~
current fandom: hazbin hotel
previous fandoms:
hannibal (will always have a very special place in my heart)
arcane (will revisit when the new season comes out)
ofmd (literally so happy this exists; devastated it's not getting a new season)
the dragon prince (will probably revisit when the new season comes out)
good omens
lotr (I also read like 2/3 of the hobbit and will hopefully finish it this summer lmao)
things in media that make me go insane (in a good way)~
friendship
happy endings
cannibalism
(WELL-WRITTEN) romance (THAT RESPECTS THE CHARACTERS AS INDIVIDUALS AS WELL AS WHO THEY ARE IN RELATION TO OTHERS)
surrealism
good visuals (even if everything else is shit; extra points if it's animation)
angst
fake-hating
this one's weird but I love situations where a character is really helpless; I thought I liked whump because I can be borderline sadistic about it sometimes, but whump is really not necessary at all to this concept
religious stuff, mythology, angels specifically for some reason (especially when they're terrifying and/or fallen)
gay people
requests~
you are welcome to send in ideas through comments, DMs, asks, etc., but I can't guarantee I'll draw them. if I don't, it doesn't mean that I don't like your idea; I'm probably just busy or have too many brainworms about a specific thing to draw anything but what's on my mind.
notes~
I randomly get really anxious about feedback on stuff sometimes lol, but I promise I read every single comment/tag and cherish them very deeply <33
also, like/rb spamming is totally fine and welcomed! I know some people don't like it, so I just wanted to make it clear that it's completely cool with me.
mutuals~
for a really long time, this was my pinned post, and it's still true! definitely welcome any interactions from mutuals <3
I do have a problem with randomly ghosting people though; I've been much better with it recently, but please try not to take it personally if I don't respond to DMs quickly. I'm probably just being insane and in my head about it. I'm really sorry.
misc~
this is an account that is purposely removed from my irl stuff; I'm here to have fun and relax on my mostly fandom-oriented blog.
I don't block often since I mostly meet nice people on here, but I am very happy to block accounts that make my experience on this app shitty.
I try to tag triggers when appropriate, but please let me know if you need me to tag anything I haven't.
art for me is just a hobby I use for fun and self-expression, so while I really appreciate concrit, keep in mind that my goal is ultimately to make stuff that makes me happy.
I am also very protective of young artists that get made fun of for being beginners or making unconventional art; you should never assume why someone is making art, and you especially should not assume that they are focused on becoming more skilled or making things that are beautiful to you. if they're not hurting anyone and you're not their target audience, get the fuck out.
I am of the mindset that media is not real, but that your reaction/the things you learn are. liking cannibal media does not make you a cannibal, but seeing bigoted portrayals of minorities can feed your biases (doesn't necessarily mean you can't consume it; does mean its effect on you/others irl should factor into if/how you decide to interact with it).
I'm vaguely fucked in the head. just keep that in mind.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @thebeckster, thank you so much!! I love doing these. Sorry this took me so long though, I got distracted by life and then totally forgot until I saw it again in my notes recently asdfasdf.
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 74 total!
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 476,681 since 2018 :)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
A BIG variety, but my top 5 are: RF4 (by FAR, 38 fics), Good Omens (4), Tales of Series (4), Ace Attorney (4), Samurai Love Ballad (3)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Good Mornings (Good Omens)
The Space Between (Ace Attorney)
Glass Heart (ROTTMNT)
in your eyes (Ace Attorney)
The Waves (OFMD)
Those are all from the bigger fandoms I've written for, so that checks out! I'm quite proud of those :)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to every one! I'm sure I've missed some but I generally at least try to thank someone for commenting, and I love engaging with people about fandom.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Uhhh I'll be honest, I write angst SO rarely that I don't really have one that ends angsty. I guess "Bruised" (Lovestruck/Starship Promise) because that's just the most generally angsty fic I've written, but it has a happy ending anyway lol.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I write almost exclusively fluff so they're all pretty happy in their endings. If I had to pick a happiest I'd probably say "Seasons" (Good Omens) just because it's so purely fluffy and sweet, and since they're literally immortal it basically promises fluff for the rest of time? Lol.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope! The most I've gotten is more like, confusion at a fic but even then it's never really been negative.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Haha... Yes. I think uh *checks notes* 4 times now? It's basically always a character study and also purely just. Fluff and with feelings, etc. etc.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not fully. The most I've done is a bit of a crossover between different games within the same series (so like, two Tales games, or two RF games) but even that is rare.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Don't think so!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not a full co-write! I've co-plotted a couple though that haven't quite made their way to fruition, and it was tons of fun. I'm also fortunate that whenever I've got writers block I can find a friend to whine to who will usually also give me ideas!
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Mmmm this changes depending on what mood I'm in, but consistently I have always particularly loved and gone back to Phoenix/Miles (AA) and Crowley/Aziraphale (Gomens)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Ohhhh man. Uh. So mnay. The MOST though would be an unpublished Dylas/Doug kid fic that's still sitting purely in my google docs. I've got 1/5 chapters written and it's like 10k long already lolol. I really, really want to finish that one but uhhh hard to say. Some others are:
Berseria poly-ish fic about fake dating
Doug and Dylas cowboy sequel
Asafure mermaid
Farcille bodyguard/musician AU
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm good at fluff, comedy, and dialogue! I like finding a fun dynamic between characters and really picking at it until I've got it, and then jotting it down!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Oh lord. I am AWFUL at angst, and awful at writing out longer things. I've tried so many times to write out longer things I've plotted and I just always lose steam/get bored/hate it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I think it's great! I love reading it when other people do it. The only language I speak fluently besides English is Spanish, but even so my writing in it isn't the strongest, so I do get a bit self-conscious! Still, I enjoy it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
In general ever (back in 2013 on Quizzaz lmao) it was The Avengers. As far as AO3, since I started seriously writing again in 2018ish, it was Voltron!
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oooooh, gosh it's hard. I can pick two. It's either "Glass Heart" (ROTTMNT) that I just absolutely poured my heart and soul into! I researched a lot, studied the dynamics and characters a lot (I literally have an analysis section in my document about their fears/wants/needs LOL), tried really hard to make it feel like episodes of the show (which I don't often do!), workshopped ideas with friends, and tried to balance plot/angst/fluff! I think it came out well and I'm proud of it :)
And my other answer is "Knowing You" (RF4) which is a fic that's for literally TWO PEOPLE only (me and Patt) because it's a rarepair on top of a rarepair, but I just like... wrote it SO easily. Those 28k (??) absolutely poured out of my soul and onto the page. I also did stuff I don't normally write (jealousy, angst, mild miscommunication) and I think I was able to resolve it well in the plot of the fic!
Tags: Absolutely zero pressure! And if anyone sees this who wants to do it but didn't get tagged, please feel free to just say I tagged you :) @randomstarmuffin, @punkaraoke, @spinachartichokeditz, @quinniehere, and uh anyone else who wants to I'm sorry I've forgotten people's tumblrs lol

in lieu of a long weekend
10pm, sunday, oct 8, 2023
it's canadian turkey-day tomorrow ~ it's windy and grey outside ~ there is pumpkin pie in the fridge and i'm wearing an extremely pleasing wooly sweater my housemate was going to give away. we've turned the heat on for the first time this season. the cozy season of the year has arrived.
reading finished victoria goddard's whiskeyjack, book 3 in the greenwing & dart series! reading this series for me is an exercise in noticing the easter eggs that tell me it was written by a medievalist, and an academic, and a medievalist academic with a degree from the program i'm currently in. there's so much in this particular volume about poetry analysis. she came so close to using the word 'semiotic' and actually did use the phrase 'exoteric.' while i might have quibbled about things like pacing and plot and how i still don't always think first-person is a good fit in the hands of most authors, these books are like tailor-made for me. i can't not enjoy them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then on the other hand, i spent some extremely happy hours this past week with patrick o'brian's post captain. when i first read the aubrey books, i was probably in high school, fresh out of racing through the hornblower series. because the aubreyad is-- i'll be honest-- better writing, but also demands more of you as a reader, i fully didn't appreciate like 80% of this book. i knew the series, as much by osmosis as by actual time spent reading, and reading it now? felt like coming home. especially since i now have the attention, and the ability, to read between the lines. to pick up on the irony, the allusions, the humor, the misdirection! the women oh my god how did i not appreciate sophie, diana, or mrs. williams before now. i didn't mind before how little of the larger world and society made it into the movie, but i actually understand the griping now. but even more than that, i found the ship action and actual, like, battle extremely tense and interesting this time; i was up well into the night at one point just to see what would happen next, because i was nervous for my dear boys.
watching friday night double-feature with @hematiterings where we enjoyed the first three new episodes of Our Flag Means Death and finished with another two of netflix's Arcane: League of Legends, which we're probably going to finish fairly soon so i'll focus on that one. just quickly though, had a great time with the first new ofmd episode, just extremely good work from all involved, and then was weirdly not as into the second two-- though the end of ep 3 was back to grand. i think in general i like where the season is going, and i'm going to withhold further comment until we've seen some more.
Tumblr media
i was not expecting to like arcane as much as i have been. didn't have a clue what it was when we started, but the art style has absolutely blown me away. here's a quick run-down of the animation, which is a mix of hand-painted digital, 2D, and absolutely gorgeous. it looks like a video game and a painting at the same time-- not in the same way spiderverse combines animation and illustration, but with some familiar elements. people's eyes have this amazing jewel-like depth and clarity? scenery that made us go 'oh, paris looks so nice!' and 'man i love cyberpunk' and other such witticisms. but seriously, if you like good animation and also art nouveau-inspired steam-punk aesthetics, there's a lot here. plus a good (dare I? could league of legends be good, actually?) tragic story-line, and enough twists that i haven't seen coming, to really get me curious about what comes next.
Tumblr media
listening a long time ago, probably back in 2021 around the time of the most recent album, i think @mankillercalledbunny was sharing playlists or links that featured The Amazing Devil, and at roughly the same time i had a spotify playlist include a track or two for me, and now here we are. had their two albums "ruin" and "the horror and the wild" on all week, which made it a bit hard to read at times because i would get caught in the lyrics. this is exactly the kind of music two people who met at the RSC would make, it is dramatic, sort of gothic, sort of folky, sort of theater. the contrary motion, the interweaving voices, esp. in the chorus of "marbles", is where i've been living recently. i like knowing this about joey batey, i like that he has this extra dimension now when i see him as jaskier! i hope he can find a way to come back to it again, whenever.
youtube
playing i finally (after how long!) got the wizard's ink well - witch's pendant - goblins (??) quest in stardew! not a hard one at all, but so satisfying to be able to use that hint that had been hovering there in the library for the past, oh, real-world year or so. i'm like 50 pieces of hardwood away from getting the ferry up and running too, and i'm excited to move off of the plateau i've been on and open up the next level of the world.

making i mentioned the pumpkin pie up top, and it did turn out well this year despite a distracted me happening to leave out the butter when mixing the filling-- i noticed before it got into the oven, luckily, and was able to add it in! but...while it was in the pie crust, which was kind of sloppy. no nicely pinched or braided crust for me this year. and then, since the size of can of pumpkin you buy here is always a little too big for the recipe, i tried out the smitten kitchen pumpkin bread that many friends have recommended before, and that has been a delight. moist without being dense or heavy, but still very substantial? a little bit less sugar than the recipe called for, and no freshly ground nutmeg, but we did have fresh ginger and overall it is very nice. it also rose architecturally, which was maybe a function of it being on a higher rack? or of me miss-counting scoops of baking soda? anyway, hilarious.

working on working on consistency. working on momentum. working on not getting in my own way. draft of this conference paper due 10/26, slides and notes for this guest lecture due 10/25, and the chapter abides. the conference paper serves it directly, however, which i feel good about. i keep finding new things to read about, and keep being glad i've continued researching, since i'm coming up with excellent (it feels) material to work with, but i can't let that get in the way of actually. writing.

fic author q&a
tagged by @zannolin <3 tysm!
why do you write fanfic?
i love everything about it. i love how immediate it is. i can just click post and people can see it. i love when people tell me their favorite part in the comments. i love having 100% creative control. i love having no deadlines. i love shouting something i'm proud of into the void and then getting a reply from somewhere halfway across the world in a mutual second language. i love building community with strangers over things we both love. it's the best.
which of your posted stories do you think of the most even though the story is "finished"?
probably there's daggers in men's smiles because that one has the biggest piece of my soul in it. i also think of anti-hero a lot but i'm still working on the sequel so I don't count it as "finished".
if you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?
if it's a multi-chapter, get to the 90-95% mark before you start posting. not only does this increase the likelihood of you actually finishing it and ending up with a completed story you're proud of, you'll also end up with a better final product because you can go back and edit earlier chapters once the later chapters are taking form and make the themes more cohesive.
what's your relationship to fic stats?
i like em. i used to track them obsessively when I was younger but honestly i have neither the time nor the motivation for that anymore. but it's nice to see a number and picture actual people. 25 kudos is abstract to me, i don't care about that. but realizing that 25 people looked at a project and went "nice. thanks for letting me read it" is wild to me. makes me really happy.
is there a pairing or scenario or friendship that you miss writing? if so, why? if not, why not?
yes and no. i used to read so much fanfic and write almost none, and now it's pretty much the opposite. so there isn't really a lot of content i'm "no longer writing" because there wasn't much for me to abandon in the first place. steve/bucky was my bread and butter ten years ago (how is the winter soldier ten years old already? wtf?) and i don't really see myself returning there, but i keep finding similar vibes in my newer projects and i'm really happy about that.
what motivates you to write?
i don't know how to stop. it's how i deal with being a person. wish i had a smart inspirational answer but that's what it is. it just happens. if i'm bored or sad or happy or tired or nervous, i write.
why do you write for the fandom(s) you write for?
i haven't fully understood why i write for some of my fandoms but not others. there's a lot of media that i adore and have never written a single word for (hannibal, the x files, ofmd, discworld...). often it's specifically the idea of "this character trait / this dynamic feels underutilized, I want to explore it further". cobra kai is a yarn drawer of messy but compelling character arcs that often go nowhere, and i like untangling the potential of them. star trek is comforting and it's good soil for planting angst, hope and humor plus an ensemble cast.
if you're stuck writing a WIP, what do you do?
work on a different one. i have so many and i'm always obsessed with at least one of them. sooner or later i'll have an idea for one of the older ones and then that's back on the menu again. i never force myself to work on something specific.
what do you wish people knew about comments?
a long unhinged comment is the key to my heart (as @zannolin who tagged me in this knows all too well), but i love each and every one so much. i love comments that are just a chain of emojis, comments that say nothing except 'how dare you', comments that dive into themes and metaphors. i love comments that tell me my fic made them laugh out loud, made them stay up too late, made them tell a non-fandom friend about it. there are so many different types of comments that make up the tapestry of a fun community, so please don't assume that there's a right way to leave a comment and the author will be disappointed or upset if you do it "wrong". i'm always worried my comments are not as funny / intelligent / memorable / observant as other people's comments and i hope i can take that fear away from other readers!
(also i try my best to reply fast but sometimes it takes a bit and i'm sorry! it doesn't mean i don't love your comment!)
maybe there's a question you wish had been on here. what's that question (and answer)? -> what are some writing challenges you're personally looking forward to?
writing more funny miscommunication and seeing how far I can push it. scenes that are set in darkness so I don't rely too much on describing visuals. maybe a mystery one day when i feel up for doing something plot-heavy.
tagging @vimesbootstheory @dykesynthezoid @russolaw @ficusin and @blinkasaurus and anyone else who wants to participate <3
thank you @zannolin for tagging me! love that i can always count on you to be just as unhinged about tdims as i am

20 Questions for Fanfci writers
I was tagged by @thetragicallynerdy ! Thank you!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
278. Please remember I've been writing for 20+ years and I did port everything over when I left LJ.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
4,491,070, but that is artificially inflated from the 800k repost of Leda Verse in one file, so it's actually 3.6 million give or take.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Right now just OFMD, but uh...many. So many.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. How (thanks to Gabriel) Dean and Castiel (accidentally) raised each other (and Sam). Supernatural. Dean/Castiel. Sam/Gabriel. I wrote this 11 years ago. It's a juggernaut.
2. A Mountain I'm Willing to Die On. Zootopia. Judy Hopps/Nick Wilde. I have no defense, I was compelled as soon as I saw the movie.
3. (Redacted because fuck J.K. Rowling, but I refuse to take down work and pretend that I was never in the fandom. The story comes with a very clear disclaimer that I do not support or agree with her in any way.)
4. Jonathan to his David. MCU. Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes. The one were Steve has a tiny penis and Bucky is into it.
5. All the First Times. MCU. Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes. One of those stories where Bucky heals in the Avengers Tower.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
YES! Because I love to stay thank you and it helps build community! <3 Love you all.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Treacherous Waters. The Hobbit. Fili/Kili. I got many shrieking comments on this one, including 'I actually curled around my computer making distressed sounds of horror' Very proud of myself for that one.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
That's pretty subjective. A lot of my fics end pretty happily with personal growth, found family, and parties.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
So far I've mostly managed to avoid being picked up on that radar. I've gotten stray comments, but it's rarely hate. I think it's mostly because I've never quite gotten popular enough to draw that kind of attention. I know the more attention a fic has gotten, the more likely I am to start to get odd comments or asks. I'm also not very active on Twitter which I think helps.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Rarely! I used to subscribe to the theory that if you don't put in smut, no one will read your work, but as birthday present to myself five or six year ago, I just stopped writing it as an experiment and while my hits went down, not nearly as much as you'd think. Now I only write if the mood really strikes me and am much happier for it.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Yep! I don't think it was crazy, but I wrote a short Avengers/Mad Max one that I'm pretty proud of: Fresh Eden
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not stolen. I did have them put on Goodreads without permission which was a weird moment in fandom a few years back. I mean it's possible someone's stolen something and I haven't found out yet, I guess. My book has been pirated though.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Thanks to all the translators out there, you do incredible work for your community.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A few times! Nothing super recent though there's WIP out there.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I don't have one. I'm a consummate multishipper. I will say my most consistent ship over the years is Brian/Bender of The Breakfast Club. I will always go back to that well.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The SMAU I was working on in OFMD. It was a really fun experiment and I don't really have that much left to go, but the amount of work to make it was extensive.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. I really love writing how people talk to each other and I think a lot about tone and vocabulary and styles.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plotting. I tend to go by the seat of my pants.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I will generally just note when someone has switched languages. I don't have any confidence in auto translators and unless it's an established canon nickname or endearment, I try to avoid it. I admire multilingual authors so much!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Buffy! I was fifteen and it was a Willow/Spike fic. That was...almost twenty five years ago.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
The answer changes, and for a long time it was this Sam/Gabriel fic where I put my whole philosophy major ass into it. But these days, it's definitively Leda House and the Kraken Verse. How could it not be?
---
Thanks so much for the tag, this was a lot of fun!! Neat to look back, too.
I'm gonna tag (but only if you feel like it friends!) @internerdionality @museaway @napneeders
If you didn't get tagged but see this and want to do it, consider yourself tagged!!

For the ao3 ask game..
🏜️🧩🥤
🏜️ ⇢ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?
Kinda stealing this answer from @scarlettrust who said something similar, but when people point out individual lines that they like? I eat that shit up. I also just love genuine breakdowns and analysis of my work. People notice themes or parallels that I don't even intend sometimes and I LOVE that stuff. I just love when people tell me how my stuff impacts them
Or comments that tell me something I've written is something they reread. Something about that is incredibly touching to me.
But like. Any comment makes my heart happy as long as it's not nitpicking my work tbh
🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?
This one is hard because it depends on what mood I'm in. Generally speaking, I'm pretty picky, but I can't describe like. In What Way. Vibes, really. If I feel like the characterization is off in a specific way that I don't like, I'll probably click off. Usually if the characters are Too Emotionally Intelligent tbh. I dunno how to describe what I mean, but if I think they're too transparently author inserts, I'll click off. Which is something I always worry about when I'm writing.
But just because I don't like something doesn't mean others won't! Write whatever you like and don't give a shit about other people.
🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
For OFMD:
@izzyspussy hands down. His fics are great and make me feral and I love his characterization just... so much. Especially the way he writes the Ed/Izzy dynamic. Also just has... incredible ideas that I want to tear my teeth into
lovedhands on ao3 is another good one. I eat their shit up and I'm kinda obsessed with how they're able to write so much and how it's all so good.
@carrymelikeimcute writes some really, really good stuff too. Obsessed with the way they write Stede and Izzy tbh
For the Penumbra Podcast I've always gotta shout out @prydon who has written probably my favorite fics in the fandom. Her way of writing is incredible and she captures emotions so well. I also just think she's so creative and her ideas and the way she weaves things together in her fics are amazing
Also @blue-mood-blue who knows how to write angst in a way that scratches my brain
And like so many others, but my brain is too exhausted right now to name more, especially since I haven't actually read fic for tpp in ages.
If you like Avatar the Last Airbender, I gotta recommend @lovelyelbowleech whose fic War Games I've been reading for months
And of course there are so many other fics and authors that I adore, but can't name all of them. Every single fic writer in the universe is doing an amazing service and I appreciate them

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @devirnis <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
342
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
a little over 1.8 million
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Right now, 9-1-1, though in the last two years I've also written Merlin, Ted Lasso, Stargate: Atlantis and Our Flag Means Death, and I've completed two OFMD vids and am working on a third.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Accept No Substitutes (Merlin) 2. What Child Is This (Merlin) 3. Best Man (Merlin) 4. Motive and Method (Hawaii Five-O) 5. Revelation (Merlin)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Of course I do. Why wouldn't I?
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I might put angst in the fic itself, but I don't usually leave it in an angsty place. I suppose overall the angstiest fics ending-wise would be the Doggett/Reyes fics I wrote in X Files, probably because that was kind of the mood of the show.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I haven't really written any non-happy ending fics, and to classify one as "happiest" after 300+ stories over 20 years is pretty much impossible, sorry. Oh wait, in Defenders of the Realm (linked below) Merlin and Arthur save millions of people so I guess I'd pick that one. ;)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I haven't gotten hate specifically; I've shown my ass once or twice over the years and been called out for it, and I've apologized and corrected where possible. And lately with 9-1-1 I've had the odd person upset about the actions of a character in a couple of my fics, but it's not that they think the actions are out of character. It almost seems as though they don't want characters to ever do things that are personally frustrating or upsetting to them even if those actions make sense for that character in that situation? It's odd, but thankfully it's been pretty rare.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yep. I've written a wide variety of stuff over the years. Even straight people getting it on! :D
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Harry Potter/US Queer as Folk, anyone?
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't really care if I have.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, several times! I'm always so amazed that someone took the time to do that.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, though not recently; it used to happen a lot more in the good ol' days of LiveJournal.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I couldn't even begin to pick. So many men, so little time. When I'm in the throes of fandom love, that's my favourite.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have one Merlin WIP up on AO3 that still bothers me from time to time, but I'm not sure I'll ever get back to it because I just got mired in a plot dead end and saw no way out. I also have over 10000 words of an OFMD modern AU, but again, I hit a point where I realized I had no idea how to end it so I hit the brakes at the end of act one.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I would say characterization, and making an effort to research and try my best to work the location or the culture of the characters into a story in an authentic way.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plot-heavy stories are not my favourite thing - I can do it but I'd rather write basic bitch romcoms. And you're not going to get the most original shit ever from me - my writing is not gourmet cuisine, it's comfort food.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Research, and/or have a beta who speaks that language.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Oh god, I think it was either V or Adderly, a very Canadian show from the 80s. Those were written on high school foolscap and will never see the light of day.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Again, it's really hard to pick one after all these years. Just a few random fics I have soft spots for: Auld Lang Syne (due South), Refugee Status (Sentinel), The Road to Nevada (SGA), Defenders of the Realm (Merlin), And We'll Talk in Present Tenses (Lewis), Skin Deep (I Spy), From a Rut to a Groove (Die Hard), and too many heartbeats for one ribcage (911).
I don't tag, so anyone who wants to do this have at it!

📓👀
so my friend @frommybookbook got really into Perry Mason, and we talked once about a Perry Mason OFMD AU, and the characters don't match up at all if you're going to try to do the "X is Y" version of an AU, alas.
but then I had this idea for a crossover where Stede and/or Ed are the clients, because I was watching an episode of Perry Mason and thought: oh right Stede is definitely one of those "blond girl client" types who absolutely doesn't take Perry's advice.
(for those who have no fucking idea what I'm talking about: Perry Mason was a TV show in the 50s and 60s, and also a book series, about a defense lawyer. every episode/book involves a murder, and Perry's client is always accused and always innocent. it's great stuff, highly recommend. watched a TON of it in reruns when I was growing up.)
obviously the murder victim is a Badminton (maybe both of them get killed over the course of the show?), and I think???? Ed is the client, at least initially. the daydreaming bit is trying to work how to make the mystery plot work, and putting all the OFMD bits into a mid-20th century context and all that. it's just complicated enough that it's very much a "one of these days maybe" idea, because argh mystery plots. but it's a lot of fun to think about.
[plot of a fanfiction that I haven't written but daydream about]

Fic Writer's Showcase Game
tagged by @drgrlfriend - thank you!
Rules: Go to your published works on AO3 and list the first fic you ever published there, the last fic you published, any fic that you wrote for a fandom/ship only once, your favorite fic you wrote in the fandom/ship that has the most works, the fic you wish more people read, the fic you agonized over the most, the fic that sprang fully formed from your mind without any effort, and a work you are proud of—for whatever reason. <3
First Fic:
Left Foot Forward (Marvel, Winterhawk, Omegaverse, E) - This was born of me reading first Bucky fics, then Clint fics, then running out of winterhawk fics and going 'I should write some so that other people make more for me to read. Maybe I'll do all the popular tropes.' I was terribly depressed at the time and spent most of my days watching the food network and doing nothing, so this actually saved me in a lot of ways.
Last Fic:
A Losing Game (OFMD, Rotating Ed/Stede/Izzy But NOT Steddyhands, Death Game/Modern AU, E) - I know a lot of people are scared of reading this one because they don't know the series it's inspired by and no matter how much I promise that it doesn't matter, it's still intimidating. But I think it's the bees knees. I need to finish the companion parts, they're some of the best things I've ever written.
One-Hit Fandom:
Bad Habits / Indisposed (Dying Light 2, Aiden/Barney, PWP, Both E) - Technically a two-hit fandom and I'm always tempted to write more, but this is a hilarious instance of a character in a video game being so annoying that I was like. I need that guy OBLITERATED (sexual.)
Favourite Fic In Biggest Ship:
BANG! (Marvel, Winterhawk, Suicide Squad AU, E) - I loved writing this fic. I'm in my element when writing violent, kind of wacky comedy action romances (see ALG above as well) and BANG! was a lot of my favourite things in one. Also a call back to a few villains I loved who aren't as prominent.
Fic I Wish Was Read More:
See above for A Losing Game. I was well aware that it wouldn't have a massive reception; it's inspired by a series that people probably haven't seen, it's 80k, it's not actually Steddyhands. But it's very good. I stand by it.
Fic Most Agonised Over:
under the heel of a devil (Marvel, Ameriwinterhawk, Western AU, E) - Westerns are NOT my thing. Arson set me this challenge and I was like "welp." And went to watch a few westerns so I had some semblance of an idea of what the hell I was meant to do. I think it came out alright in the end, but it drove me nuts.
Zero-Effort Fic:
An Endless Beating Heart (OFMD, Ed/Izzy & Jack/Stede, Zombie AU, E) - Okay this is technically a snippet collection in the same verse and is Very Disjointed, but I love it. It was so easy. Zombie stuff is so cruisy for me.
Pride And Joy Fic:
Off The Mortal Coil (Marvel, Winterhawk & Platonic Bucky/Kate, Zombie AU, E) - Over 160k words. 160k. I have not and will never achieve a fic this long again. It was a labour of love and I still love it dearly.
Tagging: If you haven't done this yet, do it now. You're tagged. Go. And tag me in the post.

This is going to be random, but I wanted to say something.
For some time shipping hasn't been fun for me, and it's even worse since I enjoy crack-ships and other uncommon couples. When I started watching Stranger Things I liked the idea of Madwheeler, and I also started reading your fanfiction The Pact before even having a Tumblr account.
Today I found out about you, and when I saw that you're a writer for more famous ships like Byler but also made an amazing Madwheeler piece, it really made me smile. It's just somehow refreshing seeing someone having fun with different character dynamics and stuff.
It made me think "Damn, that's a person I can admire.". It made me somehow believe I can have fun with this again. So thank you. I hope you keep writing and sharing your ideas out there. Be weel!
Hey there @abajurapagado!! You have no idea how much this means to me!! 🥹 That I could help you in any way have a better time in the fandom and enjoy it! That's amazing.
That, after all, is what fandom is for first and foremost: Enjoyment.
That being said, I have always been a person who has written for and been a fan of smaller ships, non-canon ships, unpopular ships even in very small fandoms. I just tend to gravitate towards what interests me. In the past I've been a part of the Turn fandom (I liked a gay pairing-townhull- that was very much non-canon), Star Wars (reylo, gingerrose), OFMD (izzy x lucius), The Morning Show (stella x cory). Most of those are all very much non-canon 😂.
And this is the first fandom where I've seen many people be so staunchly devoted to "canon". It's something I haven't come across in my other fandom travels.
But, in the end, it doesn't matter what the pairing is, if it makes you happy and you find the dynamic interesting than I say engage with it! Even if it makes others side eye you or not be happy with it. It doesn't matter. I'm very much a ship and let ship type of person. And in my Star Wars and Shadow and Bone days, have been in support of some very unliked pairings, but I've tried to never to let it stop me from having a good time. I'm here for the dynamics and drama and I tend to lean towards certain dynamics because of that!
Byler is the first pairing I've ever been a fan of, besides Reylo, that is "mainstream" or has a big following. Actually, as a past Reylo, I see a lot of the same thing happening with Byler....people saying that the followers are delusional, where if you watched the SW films...know how that all ended up 🙃
But also, my other biggest SW ship, gingerrose, is a random ship that was built around 3 pieces of dialogue and a finger bite deleted scene lmao....and they've ended up being a dynamic I actually like a lot better and read about more than I ever did Reylo. I think that you can ship multiple things in the same fandom and it's okay if one of them is a little different, unpopular, or people think it's weird. There is no reason for people to be offended by what other people ship. That is such a strange concept to me.
Madwheeler, to me, is interesting. I am VERY much aware it's a "crackship" or whatever. I do not expect anything from canon. That's not the point. It actually is freeing to have something be completely for fun, and I don't have those emotional ties like I do byler or I did with reylo, where I really wanted it to happen it canon. I think the actors have good chemistry, I think they are for sure very paralleled to one another, and I think that it's a ship that has a lot to unpack. I don't give a flying fuck if it's not canon or out of nowhere or if some people think it's "ick". Doesn't bother me. I am interested in the drama, I like to headcanon them both as bisexual which is fun, and I live for the tension of "hating" someone and having sexual tension. It's good shit, and it's SO EASY to do with their dynamic. It practically writes itself.
I love Byler for different reasons: the best friends to lovers trope, the sweetness of it, the angst, the coming of age. Will is my favorite character and I just love his story.
Both pairings offer SO MANY things, but they also are very different. And it allows me as a writer to explore different tropes, different facets of these fictional character's personalities, and as there is always a little bit of myself in my writing, explore some different emotions etc.
And I personally believe that exploring new dynamics in addition to my main one, has kept me more active in the ST fandom and byler community. It's kept me feeling creative, and keeps it fun as we're waiting for season 5 crumbs and filming to start etc! Fanfiction is very much meant for exploring things that don't happen in canon and exploring character dynamics that speak to you personally. Imo, it's the entire point of it. So anywho, I'm glad you're enjoying The Pact, and I am so happy that my tiny self has stoked the fire a little bit for your Stranger Things love. I hope you have tons of fun from here are on out!! ♡♡♡♡♡

Writing meme!
7, 16, and 22?
7. How do you choose which POV to write from?
That's hard. I don't usually spend so much time thinking about that, because usually when I come up with a fic, the idea itself is usually from a certain characters pov. So I don't spend much planning it. I spend a lot of my fics focusing on internal processing and experiences, so I usually use the pov of whoever I want to send on an emotional journey
For Nettles, specifically, it really started as a whim that I wrote a quick one shot for. Because some of the big focuses and themes of Nettles are the exchange of gifts, the different ways people interpret and communicate things, and specifically the way Ed and Stede provide for each other, I wanted to flip back and forth between them to kind of mirror that. So we could see some of the miscommunications and differing interpretations and also so we as the audience kind of get passed back and forth like the knife or the paperweight or the bag
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
This is hard to answer. Do you mean vague ideas that exist? Ones I'm actually building on? Half finished WIPs?
The vague ideas are all over the place and literally probably in the hundreds. I'm actively pondering and plotting for probably three other fics? Two for ofmd and one for mdzs. The mdzs one is my only big half finished WIP right now. I've got a full outline and about four chapters of it written and shared with no one but my partner.
For the two ofmd ones, they're both meant to be spinoffs in the Nettlesverse (which is what I'm now calling it). The plan is to write them after I finish the main fic, and one is meant to be a short exploration of Jim/Olu while the other focuses on Izzy and a dog that I am going to give him. Hope that answers the question?
22. Are there certain types of writing you won't do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc)
I have no idea. I started writing fanfic about 15 years ago, any there's a whole lot I've done in that time that I might have sworn I'd never do. As of right now, I don't really like writing in first person, so I probably won't be doing that. I haven't properly written smut before, but I am planning to for Nettles, so we'll see if the changes something in me. On that note, I've never written PWP and at the moment don't think I will (pending the aforementioned Changes). I might one day challenge myself to write something that is Only Fluff. It would possibly cause me to spontaneously combust, but I do want to try
I guess this question is kind of hard because a lot of times, when I become aware of something I'm bad at, I'll write something that's Only That to try and get good at it. For example: I am terrible at writing longfic and commiting and finishing it. Hence, Nettles. So I say now I'm bad at all these things and, at the same time, kind of feel a challenge to do a one shot that's only fluff, or in first person, or PWP
Thank you for asking these questions! This was super fun and I always like hearing from you 😘👉👉

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you babe for the tag <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I have 62 works posted on ao3 (although some are anonymous and some are not fics but original stuff).
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
131,372 words.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Many, lol. The fandom I have the most fics posted is Sherlock (BBC). The second is Good Omens (and also the fandom I have the most WIPs for). I have also posted fics for the MCU, Star Trek (TOS, AOS, TNG, DSC), the TAZ podcast, DC/Batman, OFMD and, most recently, X-Men.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
#1 in all statistics, by a wide margin of difference, is Gotham Online, my DC/Batman social media AU fic, with 3,033 kudos. Second, with 479 kudos is Epiphanies at dawn, my OFMD Izzy/Stede Steddyhands fic; I'm relaly proud of this one actually. Then there's Surprising and unexpected (Star Trek), then There's No Truth Like Home (Sherlock) and fifth is Seeking Knowledge (Good Omens).
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I like replying to comments.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Um, none? I don't write much angst, and when I do it always has a happy ending. Probably the angstiest fic I wrote is In your precense I trust, my last Good Omens fic where Crowley has a shit day and seeks out Aziraphale for some comfort. But it doesn't have an angsty ending at all.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Literally all of them? Most of them have very soft endings because that's what I love.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope. I think I got some weird comments a couple of times? But no. And if I did I deleted them and forgot about them lol.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I haven't posted any smut, yet. I have two (...three? Can't recall) smut WIPs, one OFMD that's almost finished and needs editing (although I haven't touched it in months lol) and one Good Omens one as well that is significantly more incomplete.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don't? I have had a few ideas for crossovers, and I even started writing a couple, but none I've worked on in a while. The craziest one is a Good Omens/Los Simuladores (Argentina) crossover; I had the idead with @two-hands-toward-the-sun and they actually wrote a fic about it, every morning the same big and little words all spelling out desire. It's very good and you should read it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope. Not to my knowledge at least, I hope not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yeah! I translated a few of my own fics (from english to spanish and spanish to english) and I had several of my Sherlock fics translated to russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yup, Obsession is a Sherlock fic I co-wrote with @0therainbowmind0 during late 2019/early 2020.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Something you need to know about me: I am terribly indecisive. I don't have favourite anythings because I can never choose and my asnwers change constantly. So, at the moment and for the past couple years my favourite ship, or at elast the one I keep returning to, has been Good Omens' Aziraphale/Crowley. Although, at this very moment, as in, the day I'm writing this and for the past week or so, I have also been very much into X-Men's Charles/Erik.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Hard question! I don't like posting WIPs, so I almost always wait until I have completed a story before posting it. The only exception is Gotham Online. I would like to finish that fic sometime, although there's not much plotline, I would simply like to continue it because I have many ideas. One other fic I would like to finish but I am not certain I will is my "Heaven's Prayers Department" Good Omens WIP, where some angels in heaven hear Crowley's prayers through the millenia.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think probably writing dialogue is what I'm best at. I'm good at it, even though sometimes I may struggle to properly get a character's voice.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions, I really struggle with them in general. I'm bad at describing places, clothes, everything. Ambientation is not my thing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
It's fine? I don't know; I don't do it. The only time I did was in my Good Omens' spanish pet names fic, which to be fair, I wrote originally in spanish (Los nombres del amor) and later translated to english (The names of love). In the translation I kept the pet names untranslated, as they were the entire point of the fic.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I don't remember if I ever actually wrote or just daydreamed and maybe, at most, wrote down a handful of ideas as a bulletpoint list, but if we count that then it was, embarrassingly enough, for the Spanish gamer youtubers fandom circa ~2016. But the first fandom I actually wrote for was Sherlock. Or maybe MCU? I don't remember which one I wrote for first but the first fic I ever posted was a Sherlock one.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh fuck. This is literally so hard to choose. I think my favourite Good Omens fic is the previously named In your precense I trust or Lavender Suits You, which I wrote for the Ineffable Butch Wives Week last year. Other favourites I really loved writing and also enjoy rereading are: Crush, a TAZ fic written for the Blupjeans Week 2021; Joanna McCoy's Week In Space, written for the Spones Reverse Big Bang 2020-21; my previously mentioned OFMD fic, Epiphanies at dawn; and my most recent fic, age with all its ailing brings blessings, I believe, which is an X-Men fic and the first part of the old men cherik series. The second part of the series is finish and already half edited, and I started writing the third (and probably final) part.
Honestly if anyone wants to do this, consider yourself tagged. It was very fun XD
