DnD 5e One Shot - The Dragon and The King

So, last saturday our group had our second one shot. I’m writing this up first, because the first One Shot was a Winter Solstice one that takes place in the near future of our party and stuff happens in it (will write down an episode on that once we catch up).

Our ranger @unholysavior was the DM for that one, so our regular dm @lozwithasideofcheese got to play with us again as a player.

Our party consisted of:

Reed, the Firbolg Ranger (as played by our Goblin Barbarian player Hayden) and his companion, the mountain lion and BEST GIRL Ginger;

Kit, the Changeling Rogue (as played by our DM);

Gamin Steak the Eldarin Necromancer (as played by our Half-Orc bard @langsty-mc-langstface);

Nemo Olzien, te Aasimar Paladin (as played by our Air Genasi Monk, @kittehr);

and lastly Esteban “Ban” Carrera, the Halfling Cleric, as played by me.

We started at 5th level and were called to the court of King Adavier (a rather empty court as we found out later on). He tasked us with the job of arming ourselves in the town of Greenburrow/Greenborough (I’m not sure on how it’s written), climb a nearby mountain and fight a 500 year old tyranical red dragon atop the Stone’s Peak of the mountain.

He will pay us “handsomely” 40 gold pieces each for the task and immediatelly we should’ve figured something was wrong with the job. It felt off. But I think we were mainly distracted with Gamin’s shenanigans. Gamin was a bit unhinged (and by a bit, I mean a lot) and almost dove out of a window.

He also secured himself bones from the royal catacombs??? I don’t think we ever followed up on that.

After some shenanigans (for some reason I wrote down that the king sleeps commando style?! Gamin was great, XD) in the court and introductions to each other outside the king’s castle, we made our way to GB. On the way there we avoided a fight with highwaymen?? I think that was a thing that could have happened. But we were too perceptive to be caught by surprise, so they never made their move.

Ban, after some reluctance, ended up riding on Ginger’s back along the way to GB and Reed talked to some horses to get their take on how they were doing in the service of rent horses (Tap once for doing ok, tap twice for nah).

Kit basically robbed Gamin in plain sight, but we all rolled low enough to where we didn’t see her pull that off.

We learn that Gamin doesn’t remember where he lives, but he wants to go home. He wasn’t always like this, the insightful Ban understands from his rolls (It felt so nice to play a character, who doesn’t roll low on wisdom checks X’D). And before we reach the outskirts, everyone but Kit flexes. Yep. Even Ginger.

In the outskirts of the town we meet a black dragonborn named “Dennar” (or Donnar? I’m not sure on the pronounciation), who lives outside of town in a barn, painted black. Gamin adopts him immediatelly.

From Denar’s snoot to our ears, we learn that Sleekclaw isn’t a baddie. In fact, he’s the protector of these lands. Kind and wise. Which gets us to start questioning the king’s motives. (Us not being locals, but travelers from our own paths, we don’t know much about the local lore).

It seems that ever since the king took the throne, he has been a tyranical ruler, who would wreck any town within his kingdom??? He held hostility towards all the non-humany races (Dragonborn and Tieflings included).

We comfort the troubled DB and he basically joined the party from that point (cue the dm making a sheet for Denar, while we have a break).

We continue on the way to the town and find a sword amidst burned buildings. But not from above, which corroborates Dennar’s story to us. We learn, through Nemo, that the sword is cursed and that diamonds are growing from it. According to Reed, the sword is infused with Conjuration type magic. After some more shenanigans between Ban and Gamin (They have a very Order vs Chaos dynamic developing here), Gamin uses a clever way to carry the sword, as it may be useful for later.

The king took power 5 years prior and since then things have been going bad. My favorite quote from the one shot came next. “ It’s like a royalty card! You need to punch a card in corruptness.”

We reach the town, which is covered in diamons of various sizes. It’s disconcerning as we enter town. Greenborough is a small town with a few shops. But that doesn’t really matter, because it’s overrun by these black, red and purple diamonds that have grown all over the place.

Further north in town is the castle of the Lord and Lady, who run the township. Gamin looks at a tree and starts crying after a trip to the secret chat. My heart 8( Dennar taps him. “You ok?” Gamin: “Peachy!”

Big oof.

Gamin suddenly decides to run for the castle and we end up following him inside. Once in, we all make will saves and for all we know, we all pass. We find the lady, a green tiefling with heart shaped horns,curled up close to the staircase, looking traumatized. There’s blood up the staircase.

Ban tries to comfort the woman, while upstairs, Gamin finds a door blocked by diamonds. And starts magic missiling the shit out o the diamonds. Once he hears a faint cry for help from the other side.

After a perception check (we made SO MANY in this one shot, amazing), Ban noticed that diamonds were slowly growing on the woman’s wrists and throat. It seems that some kind of diamond plague had reached this town???

Gamin shatters a diamond and sees a red tiefling, stuck under diamonds inside the room that was blocked by the diamonds.

It’s at this point that things go bad. Dennar’s legs are petrified to the ground because of diamonds, growing on him (I guess he failed his save D: )

Through quick thinking on everyone’s part we managed to save the Lord and Lady AND Dennar, thanks to Kit’s swing with the greatsword, taking out the crystals on the lady, Reed bringing the Lord to Ban and Ban using some spells to restore both the Lord and Dennar to a non-plagued state.

The couple embrace and we learn more about what happened.

Yep, the king’s a piece of shit and needs to go down. We discuss a gameplan and ultimately agree to talk with Sleekclaw for back up. (I mean, come on. You give us a dragon, we gotta talk to the guy at least!) Ban promisses to keep Kit safe, as she doesn’t want to die before becoming an adult.

Also further developement happens between Gamin and Ban. Ban explains his faith (He’s a Life Domain cleric to Lady Istus). and Gamin is not impressed. Ban understands.

The party go to Aurora’s peak, where Sleekclaw’s cave is. We have a Proclaimers montage. It’s great.

After a callback to when Gamin befriended Dennar, Sleekclaw joins the party and flies us to the king’s domain, where he disguies himself as a person. Kit stealths like a boss and basically becomes a backpack for Nemo.

Before entering town, more shenanigans happen between Gamin and Ban. Ban gets frustrated to a point where he has an outburst at Gamin and asks him to “MAKE SENSE! PLEASE MAKE SENSE!” and I think he cured him (if temproary?!) of his madness?!

Because Gamin rolls a history check and suddenly remembers EVERYTHING O_O!!!

In tears, on his knees, he reveals his story. His name is Simon Everwinter. He was married to a man named Luke, who tragically died. Simon tried to bring him back through necromancy, but things went wrong and his mind was taken away. (PAIN!!!!)

Simon begs the party to help him remember this, should he forget it. Ban swears to him that he will do his very best to help him remember.

And so, we enter town and meet with the king. We bluff well enough and Reed ends up stabbing the king, initiating a fight that lasts less than two rounds of combat.

Simon ends up with the HDYWTDT for the game, much to Ban’s chagrin.

An argument starts between Ban and Simon over what to do next. Simon wants to raise the king as a zombie, Ban wants to revivify the king and have him stand trial for his crimes against the kingdom. Ginger bites a chunk off the king in the meanwhile (holy shit). The time for Ban’s revivify passes and he ends up distraught over the situation (god, the feels of the whole ongoing narrative between Ban and Simon. Big oof </3).

With the king slain, we have our wrap up. And learn that this game takes part in the same universe as Seon Adventures. But on a different continent. And through a mirror we see our characters from the main campaign.

And that’s how the game ends.

Continuity

((A brief Horus Heresy ficlet I wanted to write about an old War Chieftess reminicsing about the Imperial Palace during the Heresy. Also, stealing @sisterofsilence‘s Tribune for this, cause I’m a Hack!))

The cold air of the Himalazia served to rouse her from sleep. She blinked awake, focusing with a murmur of the machinery that made up her eyes. Her vision flashed green for a moment, motion sensors agitating, and she glanced at the windows. The curtains, heavy velvet drapes that kept the weak Terran light from her room, flowed and rose in the winds, and Veral rose to sit up. Her body, lithe and ancient, had been kept strong by rejuvenant treatments and augmetics, but these bitter mornings in Terra’s highest reaches made her feel so very old.

And she was old, she reminded herself as she pushed herself from her bed, shifting the thick duvet off, and stepping onto the slippers by her bedside. The cut marble slabs that made up the palace floor were beautiful… but no one enjoyed stepping onto winter cold stone in the early hours of the morning.

With a red robe over her night wear, and her loose grey hair bound up into a tail, Lady Veral, a former Steppe-Chieftess of the Urals Region, took her morning walk along the Palace Parapet.

She had gotten used to what Dorn’s Fists had done to the once glorious Palace. Though she had seen the Palace Holy go from a stone bastion set at the seat of the Mountains, to a once grand expanse over the course of two centuries. The new vista of cannons and armoured towers left her somewhat disheartened. The Imperium had fallen so far.

She could still remember the day the Emperor and his Golden Warriors had come to her Clan’s Steppe-Fort, had brokered terms. She had heard word, brought by refugees, by war survivors and fleeing soldiers, that some Great Host had been conquering the barbarous warlords and dynasts of Terra, fighting with an army of Gene-bulked Killers, led by a Golden Company. This had been some centuries in, towards the last, latter years of Unification.

Chieftess Veral had safeguarded her people and carved a sanctuary for them far to the North West of the new Emperor’s domain, but He had not been blind to her Clan’s presence. Nor was He blind to the presence of nearly forty other Clans, all housed near the Urals. Veral had been one of seven Clans who had chosen to bend the knee before the Emperor- a memory that no longer carried shame, after two centuries of seeing His vision. The other thirty odd clans had faced warriors in armour of a seething, hissing make. She had not been surprised that none had survived, not when she had learned these were to become His Legions

She had seen the children of Clans be selected to undergo the Trials to become the Emperor’s Legionaries, seen mothers and fathers weeping as their children were taken. The words of this… aloof, distant Monarch did little to salve their fears and torments. Even she had found it hard to swallow this. No parent could ever bare to see the pain of another in losing their child

Veral’s own child, at the age of twelve, had been taken too… when she had next seen him, thirty years later, he was unrecognizable. Armoured in grey and white, with a collared hound etched upon his shoulder, she had not known it was her son until she had read the Lists of Honour. He had been proud faced, returned from the Compliances in the Outer Sol reaches, before being sent off into the vastness for the Great Crusade.

She had not wept. She was proud. He had lived, and was making this grand vision a reality. So she put her pain aside, and went on with her new duties, as offered by the Sigillite.

She was fond of Malcador, in a way. He was cunning, insightful and had a deep abiding respect for the other Ancients who had seen the Imperium rise. It was a comfort to think on, as she made her way along a once cloistered parapet, to stand at a balcony. It had once afforded her a view of the great minarets and spires and the lazulite decoration of Annapurna Gate. It had been something to take in when that grand gate had gone up, to see the way daylight would shine on it.

Now… now in Terra’s bleak morning, Dorn had replaced it with a great bastion gate of uncaring adamantium, veined with void shield generators, marked with gun cloches and cannon emplacements. Now, in place of a gemstone’s iridescence, there was the harsh glare of active shields being tested every half hour.

She sighed, and made her way to the Tranquil City. At least there, at least near that serene court, there was none of Dorn’s work.

Dressed in the crimson surcoat and quilted underarmour suit of household guard, Veral looked significantly more comfortable, more at ease. She downed the caffiene- some fine ground thing that she had made thick and sludgy with sugar- and began to make her way through the packed palace promenades to Malcador’s next lengthy, unnecessary meeting. They debated how best to defend against the Traitors, and Veral had taken to vouching for an unpopular decision.

She could hear, however, the sound of active Power Armour. Not the deep joint-snarl of Legion plate, but the waspish, imperious hum of Aurumite Battle Plate, the warsuits of the Legio Custodes.

Tribune Arlette, Wing Commander of the Custodes, and confidante of the Emperor, was pacing in frustration, marching along one of the cloistered sections of the Ennara tower walks. Her expression, whilst almost neutral, showed the Custodian’s quiet exasperation. The way her fingers clenched on the Guardian Spear, were all tells that the legendary patience of a Custodes had been worn down.

It may have been the stress of the Heresy that was unfolding, or the Secret War that the Ten Thousand and the Oblivion Knightesses were conducting under the Imperial Palace. Veral had no knowledge of it, save the number of Servitors, Mechanicus thralls and munition trains that had gone under the Palace. And she had rarely seen Custodes emerge from it, in armour rent and sundered in countless, impossible ways.

Arlette was a striking woman, and her position in the Golden Legion leant her a degree of autonomy. But she had been fighting that secret war for so long, it felt… wrong for her to be upon the parapets here. Veral could see some faint bruising, the discolouration of broken blood vessels and the marks of trauma upon Arlette’s face. It was as if something had struck her in the mouth.

Veral made the gesture of the Fist of Unity, which Arlette returned, gauntlet clammering to the ornate breastplate that was her authority. Towering over twice the height of the old Chieftess, Arlette stared down from the harsh, decorated gorget, meeting the gaze of the Ural’s old War Lady.

“Guard Captain,” Arlette said, her voice a little harsh, as if her throat had been worn raw. “It has been some time. Regent Malcador is convening the next Council in his personal chambers.”

Veral nodded, and finished her cup of Caffiene- nearly cold in the high air of the mountain palace- and she idled the cup between her fingers. “I am. The Household Guard are finding the Fists a difficult prospect to work with, and my proposals for the War are not… popular ones.”

In the light of dawn, Arlette’s smile gleamed, a knowing smirk. She rested her spear against her shoulder guard, and smiled. “Not many people are keen to overturn the Decree of Nikea, Captain. Some believe the Psyker may be the root of his Heresy.”

Veral glanced over the ruined Palace, at the bunkers and gun emplacements and batteries and void shields. She breathed in the cold air, and her fingers- augmetics of beautiful craftsmanship rather than flesh and bone- clenched on the stone. “But the reports we’ve read… Of Warp abominations, the enemy employing… profaned means of war. I believe Guilliman wrote in his treatises that we cannot shy away from any method, any tool or weapon, if its exclusion spells defeat,” the Old Chieftess said, leaning on the balcony, staring out over the grey scape of militant Imperial Defense.

Arlette ran a gloved thumb over her jawline, ignoring the faint throb of pain that throbbed through her bruised lips and cheek. “That is a pearl of wisdom from the Thirteenth,” she murmured. “One that would be easily open to abuse, and the quotes of another’s authority may not seem the strongest argument.” Arlette strode over to look at the ruin of her home.

“The wisdom behind the statement must be heeded though, Lady Tribune,” she breathed. “Lord Dorn and Architect Singh have followed that mentality, destroying the Palace so it may be made a fortress to spite Lupercal’s ambition.”

The Custodian had to catch the acid remark that had rolled up in response. But Veral had a point. One inelegantly underlined by the vista before them.

“I fear you may be right, Chieftess,” Arlette said, regarding the ancient Captain.

In this clearer light, Veral turned to look at the Tribune, could see the damage, the scars on her armour. She could see clearly the faint blossom of healing bruises upon her face.

“The Secret War. How goes it?” she asked, in quiet, conspiratorial tones. She was… concerned for Arlette- and the notion of being worried over a Custodian seemed almost funny. It was the sorrow and the injuries that stole humour from it.

It seemed, for a moment, that Arlette would not speak of it. She seemed hesitant, as if speaking of it would somehow doom them. When she answered, it was soft, low and almost unheard.

“We still stand. We resist. We shall always hold,” she murmured. “Do not ask more. For this is Our War, Chieftess.” She smiled a little, and hefted up her spear.

“Sadly, I must bid you goodbye. An Imperial Fist officer is about deliver the ten thousandth request to access the Tranquil City, and I must deliver to him my firm dismissal of that motion.”

Veral’s laughter was a hearty bark, as solid as a bolter, and she pushed back from the balcony, hand on her sabre belt. “And I must endure several hours of boredom. I wish you victory in your battles, Tribune. “

“And I wish you luck with yours, Lady Veral.”

IN DEPTH with Rapper ShayJToday - SMART CHAT series - LV CONVERSATIONS.

This conversation is one of many that has truly confirmed for me that our so-called ‘Millennials’ are anything but prey to bad habits and a short attention span. If anything, perhaps the exposure to tech has encouraged them to evolve at a much faster pace creatively (and personally/professionally) in terms of insight and self awareness.

ShayJToday was born in St. Mary's Georgia (small city outside of Savannah Georgia) and raised in Riviera Beach Florida (aka Palm Beach County). He now currently lives in ATLANTA, Georgia. This in depth conversation took place on an Insta chat - the first in a series of ‘Smart Chats'. Why not.

Why did you choose a philosophical approach to rap and music?

I would have to say my influences played a great role musically. At the same time, my family and the culture where I'm from plays a role too. One of the first music videos I came across was Scarface's “never seen a man cry" and it blew my mind! I was also a part of a club in high school under a civil rights organization in the past where I witnessed Congressman John Lewis speak. He talked about having a voice and using it to make a difference. Back then I used to just rap for fun and attention. But that made me realise I can truly reach people through what I do and that it is a gift.

In high school I had a couple of direct inspirations. First was my older brother. He was known in school for rapping and was very popular to the point I was overshadowed as "Kario's little brother”. But he quit pursuing rap which hurt me because I believed in him so much (and I still believe in him). But I started to take it seriously back then just to show him where it could go, and in time I ended up falling deeper in love with the craft.

My rapping became popular in high school and the old clips you see of me in 'Ghetto Geppetto' are actually from that time. I had a vision way back then that I would use the footage in the future for something related to music. Being into TV production since elementary school, I would check out a camera on a random friday and record myself freestyling during lunch with friends.

How did you fit in amongst your peers?

As far as my peers go, I have had conflicts with that growing up all the time. I used to try to fit in with friends and family but it never worked out for me. By the time I was in high school I gave up on trying to fit in and focused more on standing out or being the best me I can be. Sure, I had my moments where I compared myself to others, and I've even been envious of people too...but that was when I did not know my worth. So I compared myself to evaluate where I thought I stood. In the end I learned that none of that matters. It's all about being the best me I can be. I believe in actions, and that's what I use to inspire others to be great. By focusing on being the best version of myself.

How old are you?

I'm 28.

Where do you see yourself fitting into in terms of a 'genre' of rap? Is there a style you identify with more than any other? And can you also name a few of those artists who are your biggest current influencers?

I personally don't care much about fitting in when it comes to rap groups, however I am honoured when my name is mentioned amongst or in comparison to great MC's in my eyes. I say this because even if I relate to an artist via similar sounds (lyrical, etc.) I may not relate or share the same views as those rappers personally.

Before I go on, I have to mention that musically at first all I knew was down south/west coast music. I have musical influences and I have rap heroes too. But currently I would say… OutKast, The Pharcyde, Scarface, Common, ATCQ, Slum Village, Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, Devin the Dude...just to name a few lol. My top 3 influences of all time would have to be Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and 2Pac. All of these people had a common thread; plenty of heart. It shined from each and every one of them in their own way. Allen Iverson is an honorable mention lol!

In your opinion, where does influence end, and individual creativity begin? Or do they overlap and appear in concert with one another? How is it possible for an artist to separate artistic influence from their own expression?

Everyone starts off as a skeleton of their direct influence, however once you find your own identity, I believe one is able to find their true voice in their artistic expression. I live by something that Lauryn Hill said in an interview once. She said that there is a time to Live, and them there's a time to create. It's a great big cycle. It's more about an artists preference and ability to make it happen. Like Lauryn, I prefer to take in my experiences and let them come to me in time. To separate artistic influence from our own expression can be tough starting off unless you're Bobby McFerrin, lol (that man is pure individuality).

I suppose I'm curious about identity and influence and how they converge continually and what separates them. How do you feel about it being said / argued that hip hop or a culture is appropriated by people who have no 'reference' to it? A theme I'm looking at is cultural influence and cultural appropriation.

This is why paying dues is so important. I think cultural appropriation is only thrown at people when people use customs from another culture yet don't know the history of the culture itself. That to me is the common thread of any problem when it comes to appropriation of any culture. On the other hand, some people just get mad and throw terms out just to have a fit. But I can see how it insults people who lived the culture (and that applies to anything).

It's a two way street. I can be wrong but I tend to see the grey areas more these days. People get mad over the simplest s#!t nowadays, yet I see how not respecting the cultural customs can actually be offensive. But to me it takes both ends to be flexible for it not to become a problem. From older people who are culturally inclined, to loosen up on their views, and people new to the culture to respect what came before them, even if there is a lack of knowledge.

Fabulous answer. LV is all about the grey area. There's so much more to the clear cut positions put forth. I am curious about how we can meander around these. Negotiate such strict ways of being and thinking. How do you want your music to influence? Your art? What kind of change or impact do you want it to engender?

I just had a talk with someone today on this same topic. They said that strict cultural values are like the titanic; it takes a long time to change direction. So it will take a while but eventually they'll get there. It's just that sometimes we forget about the journey (especially in hip-hop). I touch on this a bit in the trailer I released for my next album. My music is solely to inspire people to grow. For now that is my focus. It won't always be. Different projects may represent different facets of my life in the moment. I may make a party album after this. Who knows. But I can only speak for here and now. How I want it to inspire? In a good way, I hope! (lol) but how It inspires people doesn't matter to me. Just to be inspiring is the most important thing. I've come to realise, that is my purpose in this world. To inspire. Hopefully it prompts people to focus more on themselves. To become a better version of themselves. We often call out problems in the world but we can only control ourselves in the end. So why not focus on "YOU?”. It's the most important thing towards making the world a better place.

Not everyone learns how to focus on themselves early on. You were lucky to get that bolt of lightening. Self realisation is very powerful right?

Self realization is so important. There is a quote that my moms (I gotta say "moms," forgive me lol) lives by. She says to "Define yourself, before the world tries to define you.” I never forgot it after she mentioned that. Before I chose to attempt to really step out into rap I spent a lot of time focusing on who I really am. I did not want to take any major full steps in this game without that realisation because I've heard and seen so many stories of people trying to find themselves after the success/fame etc. It’s scary. I love evolution. Was I lucky? I don’t know. Blessed I guess. I grew up around a grandmother (Alice Rolle - I swear I say her name in almost every song) who was very clairvoyant and full of wisdom. So was my dad and many others in my family.

Paradoxically the world does help to define us. With all its influences. But I get what she's saying. Your ‘Moms' is wise! It is such a useful insight - to know yourself before putting out the work. You can at times learn about yourself whilst putting your work out there. What's next for ShayJToday?

For me, it's all about my next album. It's titled "val{you}." planned for release in 2017.

How do you see content and your brand engagement in the midst of all this capacity to influence?

The thing about my album is that it's bigger than music. I'm actually pushing an idea. That will be explained more once the album drops and is heard. Just from releasing "Ghetto Geppetto" I've had complete strangers reach out to me like never before. And it is still happening now and the song has barely been out a few weeks. Young kids have poured their hearts out to me saying how much they relate to the song alone. And this is just the tip of the iceberg - musically speaking. Social media can be positive but I also see how it can be almost detrimental. Like a necessary evil that is also a helpful tool. That movie “Her" pops into my mind every time I think of social media.

Still, the settlement was expensive, and our home insurance didn't like covering a 6-digit figure claim because of the dog so they dropped us. There is only one house insurance that will cover us, according to my father, but they will only cover us if we don't have a dog, and even then they will charge 4 times as much.
