LENKA'S ULTIMATE FICS HALL OF FAME ༉‧₊˚.
i’ve been reading fics on tumblr for a whileeeee. many years. i went through many phases, celebrity crushes, fictional crushes and obviously, fics related to them. only some stuck with me through all this time and well, here there are!!
what’s important, i’ve done this type of post before only with theodore nott in mind. i was asked by anon to recommend some more so here you can find him, as well as many different characters across many films, books, tv shows, genres. i lowkey recommend reading most of them honestly, even if you don’t know the characters. some are just in alternate universes so the name or context of the character doesn’t really matter :)
i’m picky and particular with fics so i promise these are best of the best 🤍 well written, in character, super cute all that. and like 80 percent is fluff

a/n: revamped my tom holland series from my main blog ( @wazzupmrstark ) to try and motivate myself to finish it!!
a/n pt. 2: in this series minho and jisung know how to swim and enjoy it lol also if any old 5sos stans are reading this, they're staying in the same treehouse from The bali trip sdkfhds
series masterlist | early access to the next chapter on ko-fi
“Do you ever think about anything else?” you mumbled in annoyance.
“Do you want me to be honest?”
You shoved him, glaring hard. “You’re asking to be caught,” you whispered, eyes widening when he didn’t deny it. “What, you want him to find out?”
“Might be better than sneaking around,” he reasoned.
“We’d still have to sneak around. Your other brother and your parents can’t know,” you reminded him.
“Yeah, I guess.”
He didn’t seem convinced.
“What, do you not like me acting like Jisung’s girlfriend? Are you jealous?”
“That’s not what I meant,” he countered defensively. “I just thought you might feel bad going behind his back.”
He had you there, the bastard. “You already know I do. But I don’t want to lose my friendship with him over it.”
“He’s going to find out sooner or later.”
“Why, you’ll tell him?”
Minho rolled his eyes and sighed in exasperation. Neither of you had the advantage here and he knew that. Telling Jisung meant you’d both lose something.
You considered telling Minho that you’d also decided that you should stop sleeping together altogether, but he was already moody and you didn’t want to worsen it. You’d tell him later, when he was less defensive.
-
You slept for eleven hours straight when you finally made it to Bali.
Everyone was staying in the same accommodation again, but this time it was like a treehouse with separate rooms connected by rope bridges.
Jisung was relieved that you were finally able to sleep and rewarded you with homemade chili when you woke up.
“Is it good?” he asked, sliding onto the barstool next to you.
The kitchen was situated in the middle of the treehouse, sharing space with the common area on the other side of the deck. Despite it being open to the forest, you thankfully hadn’t been visited by any of the bugs or wildlife who might’ve been lured in by the smell of cooking food.
“Everything you make is good,” you answered, spooning another bite into your mouth.
“That’s not true.”
“Yes it is.”
“You’ve helped me through a lot of trial and error with recipes, don’t forget.”
You nodded. “You’re right. I suppressed that.”
He rolled his eyes, but grinned nonetheless, pleased that you were enjoying your lunch.
“What are we doing today?” you asked.
“Still not reading the itinerary, I see.”
“My bad.”
“We’re going surfing.”
“Wha- I don’t know how to surf!” you cried.
“We’ll teach you!”
“Oh my god, this is a nightmare,” you groaned to yourself. “We’re going to be active all day and you fed me chili? What’s wrong with you?”
You were half-kidding, mainly annoyed with yourself for not checking the schedule on your own. You shoved the bowl across the counter towards your best friend and stood from the stool. He’d finish the rest.
“When are we going?”
Jisung was hesitant to answer, probably knowing you wouldn’t like what he’d say. “In like an hour.”
“Jesus Christ,” you muttered, turning on your heel to run back to your room and change.
You ran into Felix as you rounded the corner, accidentally bumping your nose on his shoulder.
“Woah, what’s wrong?” he asked.
“Ask your brother, I’m not speaking to him right now.”
You brushed past him, only to hear Jisung muttering an explanation behind you. “I don’t know, I just told her what we’re doing today.”
An hour didn’t give you much time at all to get ready. You needed to dig through your luggage to find a bathing suit, find something to wear over it, put sunscreen on- you also needed at least twenty minutes to wrestle with a tampon so that it wasn’t painfully uncomfortable when you walked or sat or did literally anything. You’ve tried using tampons a dozen or so times, and not once has it been a pleasant enough experience for you to want to repeat. You knew people who swore by them, wouldn’t use any other product but you were not one of them. Maybe your pussy was broken, or maybe you were just doing it wrong, but you always dreaded using tampons and this was not an exception.
Of course you’d get your period when you’re going to the beach of all places. Just your luck.
You didn’t even want to go surfing, but you weren’t going to be that girlfriend that didn’t participate in family activities, especially since your fear of heights already had you sitting out of things. No, you would be the fun girlfriend that tried new things, that had a good attitude about it. It’s what Jisung deserved.
The resort that rented out the treehouses was right on the beach so it was just a short walk to the shore.
Dom and Nikki set up a spot to lounge a few meters away from where the waves were breaking so they could watch you all surf. Nikki had even brought one of her nice cameras to take pictures of you all. “I don’t have anywhere near enough pictures of this trip,” she’d said when the boys protested. They’d appreciate it a lot more when they saw the action shots later on. You watched as she set up a tripod in the sand and adjusted the legs to make the platform level before screwing the Nikon onto the plate.
Minho organized the board and wetsuit rentals at the little hut by the sand dunes that was associated with the resort. He was the most experienced surfer out of the four of you so you let him choose a board for you. After speaking with the guy working the booth they’d both decided on a foam longboard. The thing was huge. You had no idea how you were supposed to handle something so big, but Minho and the guy had assured you that bigger was better for beginners.
The three boys chose funboards, which were apparently the next size down. You felt a little embarrassed about being the only noob, but you knew you’d be a lot more embarrassed if you tried to use an intermediate board with no experience. You could already see the crowd of people surrounding your lifeless body on the beach.
“What size wetsuit do you want?” Minho asked.
“Um, I don’t really know how the sizes work,” you admitted.
Your eyes flitted to the man behind the desk who briefly looked you up and down and said, “I got you.”
Somehow he was able to determine your size just by looking at you because the one he picked fit like a glove.
“Just put the sleeves over your shoulders like this,” he demonstrated. A quick glance at the lanyard around his neck told you his name was Banyu, at least that’s what was scrawled in the open space in dry-erase marker. “And then pull the body of the suit upwards. The sleeves on your shoulders should create some resistance and help the rest slide on.”
He stepped back to let you do the rest and then showed you how to zip it up. “Like this,” he said again, pulling an imaginary zipper up his back. You did as he did and raised your arm above your head until the zipper wouldn’t go anymore.
“Perfect! You’re already a natural.”
“I don’t know about that,” you chuckled. “I bet you’ll see me eat it in about ten minutes. Maybe less.”
“Do you need a lesson?” Banyu offered, “I’m off for lunch in like thirty minutes. I’m certified to teach beginners, but I won’t charge you or anything.”
You were about to accept when Minho spoke for you.
“We’ll teach her, bro. Don’t worry.” He sounded cheery enough, but you could see past the smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“You’re not qualified, though,” you pointed out, mostly just to get under Minho’s skin. Banyu shrugged as if to say you had a point, but didn’t add his two cents. “They seem to really want to teach me,” you sighed, “but thank you. Although, if I’m still shit in a couple hours I might just take you up on that. And if I die out there, it’s on you.” The threat was directed at Minho and he knew it.
“You look great, babe!” Jisung exclaimed suddenly, finally coming to your rescue. He wrapped an arm around your waist and pinched your hip. “Wetsuits are definitely your thing.”
“Ji!” you groaned, cheeks warming. “My entire body is covered.”
“Yeah, but the thing is skin-tight,” he mused cheekily, smirking when you covered your face with your hands.
“Can we go now?” you hissed.
You were completely mortified to have this conversation in front of a stranger even if it was all part of the act. You’d never be talking to Banyu again, no matter how cute he was.
“Thanks for everything!” Jisung said brightly and turned to help you with your board.
It was pretty heavy which you found strange since it was supposedly made of foam. To be fair, it was about nine feet long, which called for a good amount of foam. Still, you were out of breath by the time you reached the edge of the water.
“He thought you were cute,” Jisung teased once you were out of earshot.
Felix nodded in agreement but Minho didn’t acknowledge the statement at all.
“You think that about everyone.” You shook your head and brushed him off. “You’re biased.”
“Okay, but I’m right this time. Even Lix agrees.”
“Yeah, but I’m staying out of this, for the record,” Felix added.
“Whatever,” you muttered.
The four of you had stopped just in front of the water to make final adjustments when Jisung told his brothers to go on without you, explaining that he’d teach you the basics and that there was no reason to wait up. Minho looked like he wanted to argue but kept his mouth shut and followed Felix out into the waves.
“You okay?” Jisung asked, checking on you as always. “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”
“I do want to,” you assured him. You were getting better at lying to your best friend but the thought didn’t give you much comfort.
Although it wasn’t that you didn’t want to try surfing. Surfing was something you always thought would be cool… to do someday. But you didn’t want to try it now. Learning how with just Jisung might be fun, but here you had an audience and that was what made you nervous.
“I’m just a little nervous.”
“I know. You’ll be fine, though. I’ll be right there with you,” he insisted, taking your hand and giving it a squeeze. You nodded, you trusted him. You trusted Jisung with your life and if he thought you could do it, then you’d give it a shot. “So first things first, you’ll want to wrap that velcro strap of the leash around your ankle so you don’t lose your board when you fall off.” You dropped your surfboard in the sand next to you and did as he said, still listening as he talked. He did the same and placed his board next to yours as he fastened his own leash to his ankle. “You’ve boogie boarded before, right?”
“Yeah. I used to do it a bunch as a kid.”
“Surfing is similar in the way you catch a wave,” he explained. “We’ll paddle out to where Minho and Felix are and when you want to give it a try you’ll paddle with the wave just like you would on a boogie board and stand up when it picks you up and crests.” He huffed and straightened up again, giving you a look. “You’re not going to like the next part.”
“What? Why?”
“We have to practice standing up.”
You immediately understood why he’d said you wouldn’t like it  And he was right. “Right here? On land?”
“Yes. It’s the most important part of learning.”
You wanted to put up more of a fight but didn’t want to make a scene so you merely grunted in displeasure before mirroring Jisung’s movements and lying flat on your stomach on the board. He showed you how to “pop up” a couple of times before he instructed you to try it yourself. There were only a few aspects of your form that he corrected before deeming you ready to get into the water, something you took pride in.
“Are you sure you haven’t done this before?” he asked, narrowing his eyes at you as you waded into the ocean together.
You knew he was just complimenting you to fuel your ego and boost your confidence but you didn’t care. It felt good to hear.
It took a good fifteen minutes to paddle all the way out to where Minho and Felix were waiting for waves. You were exhausted by the time you reached them. Fighting the current and dodging waves at the same time was a lot harder than you anticipated. Jisung was able to duck dive the waves with his board since it was smaller and he was strong enough to push the nose of it beneath the water, but you were stuck facing them head-on. Every time they’d crash into you the force would send you backward and you were forced to make up the distance by paddling twice as long.
You weren’t sure how you were supposed to catch a wave and stand up on a board after this… and then paddle back to do it all over again. Why did people do this again?
Minho and Felix greeted you happily when you and Jisung joined them, offering you both high-fives. Felix immediately launched into a story about how he and Minho had wiped out already while Minnho turned his attention to you. He gave your board a nudge with his knee and smiled encouragingly.
“Ready?”
-
“You know you’re supposed to stand up, right?”
“She’s learning, Felix, give her a break!” Jisung yelled defensively.
You sighed when you finally reached the group again, having paddled all the way back after taking another wave on your stomach. You’d managed to catch a few, you were just having trouble with the standing component, the main component of surfing.
“You’re doing great, babe,” Jisung added when you rejoined them.
 “You don’t have to lie.”
“I’m not lying! It’s not an easy thing to learn, just take your time.”
You took a deep breath and nodded, slumping forward on your board like you were hugging it. You closed your eyes as the tide rocked you gently, secretly wishing to be on the shore with Nikki and Dom. You were soaked, cold, and sticky with salty residue left behind by the ocean’s foamy currents. You honestly couldn’t wait to get back to the room and shower but you were trying to stick it out for Jisung’s sake.
“You okay?” It was Minho, who had somehow made his way over to you. You didn’t bother opening your eyes, not wanting to confront the sight of him in his skin-tight wetsuit any more than you already had to.
“Peachy,” you replied.
“Do you want to take a break? I could sit here with you for a while if you want.”
“No, I’ll be fine. I might sit the next round out but I’m okay by myself.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” you assured him. “I like watching you guys have fun.”
“Suit yourself.”
You relayed the same message to Jisung when he offered to take a breather with you, lifting yourself up to watch them catch a few more waves. Minho went first, likely claiming seniority over the twins, followed by Jisung, and finally Felix. Each of them were able to stand for at least a few seconds, usually lasting until the swell subsided.
“They’re just good at fucking everything, aren’t they?” you mumbled to yourself.
After Felix wiped out for the third time in a row they paddled back over to you, shouting for you to trade places with him.
Jisung waved his arms at you like you couldn’t see him from thirty feet away and cupped his hands around his mouth to yell at you. “Come on, benchwarmer, he’s tagging you in!”
“What’d you just call me?” you shouted back.
“You heard me! Get over here, slowpoke!”
Felix gave you an apologetic look as he took his spot beside you and slicked back his wet hair.
“Why do they need a third person?” you grumbled. “Can’t we both take a break?”
He shrugged. “They must think you’ve rested long enough.”
“Whatever. Thanks a lot.”
You were relieved to hear Felix laugh as you paddled away because you were worried he might have taken your sarcasm to heart.
“Welcome back,” Jisung said warmly and leaned across the space between you to kiss you on the cheek.
It felt a little embarrassing to put on the act in front of Minho who already knew you weren’t actually dating but Jisung didn’t know he knew- and it was all so complicated that you’d rather not think about it at all. Of course, that wasn’t an option so you settled for what was second best, which happened to be pushing everything down as much as humanly possible.
“Call me a benchwarmer again and I’m cooking dinner for a week when we get home.”
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry!”
“That’s… a punishment?” Minho asked uncertainly.
“Yes,” both you and Jisung answered simultaneously.
Minho nodded unsurely at first, then his eyes lit up as if he suddenly understood. “Right, ramen for breakfast.”
“I can’t believe you remembered that,” you admitted in surprise.
“It’s kind of a hard thing to forget, baby,” Jisung pointed out. You glared at him and he immediately averted eye contact. “Anyway, how should we do the line-up this time?”
Minho and Jisung agreed that you should go second just in case something happened during your turn, that way they’d be able to reach you from either side. Once that was decided, they played rock paper scissors over the first and third spots. Minho won and picked first again. Typical.
The current had picked up in the time it took to divvy up the line-order, which meant that bigger waves were starting to form in the sweet spot the boys had scoped earlier. Both of the Hans seemed to take this as a positive thing, but it made you even more nervous.
“We need to start before someone comes and tries to take our spot from us,” Minho said. He seemed to notice the anxiety written across your face and softened a little. “We’ll be right there, okay? No need to worry.”
Easy enough to say, you thought to yourself. You forced a smile and gave him a thumbs-up.
Jisung coached you while you waited for Minho to take his turn. You knew he was trying to be helpful but it wasn’t making you feel any better.
“Remember, once you feel the wave pick you up, pop-up on your feet.”
“I know what to do,” you reminded him, “I’m just scared to do it.”
He rubbed your back soothingly. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay, I know you’re just trying to make me feel better.”
“Don’t think too much about it, okay? Just let your body do its thing. Let your reflexes do the thinking for you.”
“I don’t know if I can not think about it.”
Your best friend hummed knowingly. “Overthinking is a talent of yours.” He dodged your attempt to splash him, giving you an offended look. “I was just telling the truth!”
“Yeah, well next time keep it to yourself,” you shot. “But I don’t think I was built to surf. I don’t have good reflexes like you guys do. I’ve never been athletic, you know that.”
“Plenty of people who aren’t naturally athletic become good at sports through practice!”
“Yeah, but I doubt that’ll happen for me in the span of a single afternoon.”
“Not with that attitude it won’t!”
Your shoulders sagged, knowing he was right- at least partially. “Okay, okay. I’m sorry for being a bummer.”
“Don’t be. I know you like to get into that head of yours,” Jisung said with a grin. “We’re supposed to be having fun. You don’t have to stand up at all today if you don’t feel ready. Don’t let Felix’s stupid comment get to you if that’s what it is. He’s an idiot and he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
You chuckled appreciatively but your attention was torn away before you could respond. It was Minho calling to you from the shallow end, asking if you were ready.
“Yeah, sorry!”
Jisung patted you on the back and gave you a thumbs up. He wished you good luck and gave your board an extra push to propel you in the direction you needed to go.
You took deep breaths as you paddled out to where Minho had just been before he took his turn. By the time you reached it, your stomach was in knots and you were trying not to think about all the possible ways you could hurt yourself with little success.
Thankfully, a lot of surfing was a waiting game. You had to wait until you paddled out all the way to the surf, wait your turn, wait for a wave that was strong enough to pick you up. Most of surfing was not surfing in the same way that most of fishing was not catching fish. Unfortunately, though, you didn’t get much of a reprieve once you got into position. The ocean was choppy, meaning good waves were readily available for the taking.
You didn’t want to wait too long and hold up the boys or risk the chance of getting into your head again, though you weren’t quite convinced you had gotten out of your head, so you took the first big wave that hit.
The first part was easy enough. You’d compared it to boogie boarding, just with a bigger, more awkward board. It was a little more difficult to propel yourself with a surfboard at the speed needed to keep up with the wave due to the sheer weight of it, and you weren’t all that fit, but it was a simple adjustment to make and you caught on to that part quickly.
You could already feel the adrenaline coursing through you as your board cut through the water. Trying to take Jisung’s advice of doing before thinking, you pushed yourself up onto your knees and then your feet one at a time. It wasn’t the smoothest pop-up, but you’d done it! You’d gotten up and were actually standing on your surfboard. You could barely hear Jisung and Minho cheering over the sound of the rushing water but it made you smile nonetheless. Even their parents were cheering you on from the beach.
The whole thing lasted maybe a couple of seconds before you lost your balance and fell off but you counted it as a win regardless, especially since water didn’t even go up your nose. When you surfaced, Minho was already making his way over to you.
“That was great!” he complimented, beaming. “Are you okay? Didn’t hit your head or anything, right?”
“I’m good, thanks. Do you think your mom got the picture?”
Minho laughed. “I’m sure she did.”
You nodded in acknowledgment and tried to lift yourself back onto your surfboard, only for your palms to slip and cause you to fall back into the water. This time you did get water up your nose and you cursed as you ducked under again to try and get it out.
“Oh shit, what happened?” Minho asked, unable to conceal the mixture of concern and amusement in his voice.
“I don’t know,” you explained, trying again. Same results. “Fuck me,” you hissed, rubbing your wrist.
“Right here?” he joked, knowing full well the comment hadn’t been directed at him.
“Shut up.”
“Can you not push yourself up?”
“I’m trying.”
“I can see that. I wasn’t being condescending, I was genuinely asking.”
“Oh,” you whispered, face warming with embarrassment. “I haven’t had this problem before! I don’t know why I’m having trouble.”
“You’re probably getting tired and sore,” Minho reasoned. “We’ve been out here for a while.”
He swung his leg around so that he could easily slide off of his own surfboard and into the water with you. You were confused until you felt his hands on your waist.
“Ready, one, two, three-”
You jumped on three and Minho helped lift you back onto your board, this time successfully.
Your face burned and you couldn’t look him in the eyes. “Thank you.”
“No problem.”
-
“I don’t know how much more of this I can do,” you admitted to Jisung once the rotation was complete and you were back in the line-up.
Minho was out doing his turn again and you were up next but you could barely keep yourself upright and your muscles were protesting even the smallest amount of movement.
Jisung winced at the stiffness you were exhibiting like he knew what you were feeling. “Yeah, you’re going to be really sore tomorrow. I still remember waking up the day after my first time surfing. Felt like I got hit by a bus.”
“Awesome, can’t wait.”
“We’ll all be feeling it tomorrow, don’t worry. It takes a lot out of you.”
“I’ve gathered that.”
“Why don’t you do one more and then call it a day?” he suggested. “We’ll grab Lix again and you can go rest with mum and dad on the beach until we’re finished.”
Hanging out with just Jisung’s parents didn’t sound all that appealing to you but you figured it would be better than pushing yourself too hard out here and getting dragged up to the shore half-conscious by one of their sons later on.
It turned out that your next turn would’ve been your last whether or not you wanted it to be. Somehow you had enough strength left to stand up on your board again but then as soon as you wiped out and tried to get up you accidentally stepped on something sharp. You couldn’t tell what it was but it felt like a rock or a piece of coral and it hurt.
You weren’t sure if you were bleeding but the pain wasn’t subsiding so you knew you would need to check it out anyway.
The boys knew it was your last turn so they didn’t question it when you swam past Minho all the way to the shore, dragging your board behind you. You hoped they couldn’t see you limping when you got out of the water either. You tried not to make it obvious but it was hard when you were favoring one foot over the other and practically hopping your way up to Nikki and Dom.
“What happened?” Nikki asked, immediately standing to meet you halfway.
“I, um, stepped on something out there, I think. I don’t think it’s serious but I can’t put any weight on my right foot so I thought I should get it looked at. Do you know if there’s first-aid anywhere around here?”
She nodded and took one of your hands even though you were dripping wet and she was completely dry. “I’m sure the lifeguards have a kit in their lookouts. And if they don’t have what you need they can point us in the direction of where to find someone who does.”
You let her lead you along the beach to the closest lifeguard chair where the on-duty lifeguard stuck his head into the little booth to call one of the off-duty guards out. You assumed he’d seen you limping up to the stand, knew you’d need help, and recruited backup to deal with you while he kept his eyes on the water.
A tan, lanky boy who looked to be about your age popped his head out of the booth and lowered his sunglasses to get a better look at you. He raised his eyebrows as if to ask “what’s wrong”, to which Nikki loosely explained what happened.
He straightened up from where he had been leaning against the wall to actually come down and assess you, telling you to take a seat on the steps of the stand as he knelt in the sand.
“What’s your name?”
“Y/n.”
“I’m Amir. I’ll try and get you patched up.”
“Thanks.”
He couldn’t be older than twenty-five, and you doubted he had any legitimate medical experience aside from mandatory first-aid training, but his demeanor relaxed you a bit. His air of confidence was reassuring rather than off-putting. You were glad that he didn’t seem nervous or panicked over your injury, you figured that must be a good sign.
“I saw you out there,” he remarked casually as he gently lifted your ankle. “First time?”
“That obvious?” you joked.
“Not at all, you’re a natural,” he lied, smirking to himself.
“That’s why I ended up here, right?”
“All the pros get roughed up, just part of the process.”
“Must be doing something right, then. Good to know.”
You watched as Amir unzipped his fanny pack and pulled an antiseptic wipe and a tube of Neosporin out. He used the wipe to clean the wound first, the sting of the rubbing alcohol making you wince.
“Sorry,” he apologized with a grimace of his own. “Worst part’s over, though. You’re not bleeding too bad, either, which is good. We actually see this a lot.”
“What do you see a lot?” you asked, still unsure about what had happened to your foot.
“Looks like you stepped, or rather jumped, on a sea urchin. Its spines broke off into your toe.”
“What?” you gasped.
“It’s not serious! The urchin isn’t poisonous or anything, we’d know right away if it was. It’s easy to treat, it’ll just be uncomfortable and might take a bit to heal.”
“Do you think the sea urchin is okay?”
Amir laughed at that, giving you a funny look. “That’s what you’re worried about?”
“I-I just feel bad. I hope I didn’t kill it.”
He waved it off as he applied the Neosporin and wrapped the top of your foot in a bandage. “I’m sure it’s fine. Sea urchins are durable. They can regrow their spines like lizards can regrow their tails.”
That made you feel a little better.
Amir tapped your ankle to signal that he was finished and held out his hand to help you back up.
“You’re good to go, y/n.”
“Thank you!”
“For treatment, if you’re able to, soak your foot in Epsom salts a few times a day. That should help the spines in your skin dissolve.”
You shuddered at the thought but nodded and thanked him again right as the Han boys joined you and Nikki at the lifeguard stand.
“What happened?” Jisung asked, taking both of your arms and looking you up and down for any sign of injury.
“Stepped on a sea urchin when I jumped off my surfboard,” you muttered.
“Oh my god, are you okay?”
“I’m embarrassed, but I’ll live.”
“Does it hurt?”
“I mean, it isn’t comfortable.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” he demanded.
“I didn’t know what happened! I just knew I’d hurt myself but I didn’t think it was that big of a deal and it isn’t! The lifeguard said so himself.”
“Stepping on a sea urchin sounds pretty serious,” Felix chimed in from behind his twin brother.
“Okay, well it’s not like I could communicate what had happened from all the way over here when you guys were in the water,” you said defensively. “I didn’t want you to worry either. I know you would’ve wanted to come with me and I didn’t want to cut your surfing short.” The last part was directed at Jisung specifically. He knew you were right, you could tell from the look in his eyes.
“I-”
“Jisung,” Nikki pressed, giving her son a look, like she was trying to remind him that he was arguing with his injured girlfriend right in front of the lifeguard stand and looked like a major asshole. “Let’s go back to our spot.”
You thanked Nikki for taking you to get first-aid and then lagged behind the rest of the Hans as you made your way back over to Dom.
Minho hung back with you, quipping, “looks like you’re making friends with everyone today, huh?”
You weren’t in the mood for whatever underlying implication he was trying to make so you just brushed him off.
“Yeah, that’s what happens when you’re nice to people.”
“And when you look like you do,” he added.
“You and your brother are exactly the same,” you groaned.
He looked affronted by this claim, holding a hand to his chest. “What do you mean?”
You dropped your voice lower so that only he could hear you. “You both think everyone’s into me.”
“Most people are.”
“You just proved my point.”

and the day after that, too
a tom fic (chapter 1) - AO3 or under the cut
Tumblr media
Rating: T - Teen
Warning: tears ahead and I will make you love Tom.
In 2016, Summer had a whirlwind romance with a boy with a British accent. He wasn’t very smooth and he wasn’t the tallest guy around, but for those short three months, he was hers.
JUNE 1, 2016
Summer sat out on her balcony watching orange and pink fill the horizon. Many could only dream of the life she lived; her parents had up and moved from land-locked Ocala when she was only seven-years-old to a two-bedroom condo on the beach down in sunny, fun Key West. She sat with one leg propped up on her chair, a cup of coffee in hand, which her mom warned her not to drink so late. She would officially be 18-years-old in a few short hours and that meant come September, she would be living a life different than the beach sun rises and sets.
She heard the smooth woosh of the glass door opening. “Do you wanna watch that new Netflix show “Stranger Things” with me and Daddy?” Her mom leaned against the siding of the doorway with a longing look in her eyes. Many people commented how much Summer looked like her mother; the same golden hair, freckles that danced across from cheek to cheek and short stature. Although it was something that her parents were more likely to say, how did 18 years go by so fast?
“I’m okay,” Summer smiled warmly. “Oh, but can we go see “Me Before You” this weekend?” Summer had plenty of girlfriends who would love to go see the movie but she knew it would make her mom elated to go with Summer to see it. Summer’s dad was a good man, but sappy romance movies were not his thing.
“Of course, we can!” Her mom’s smile broadened. “Love you, Summer.”
“Love you too.” Summer returned her gaze to the sky and the waves. She heard the glass door close again and she let out a sigh. It would be strange to her one day soon when her parents weren’t in such close proximity. Some may think living in a 1200 square foot condo with their parents would be awful as a teenager, but Summer didn’t mind it so much. Her parents were what most of her friends considered to be ‘The Cool Parents,’ since they did own one of the bars down the road.
A loud clang made her jump, a small bit of her coffee spilling on her white tank top. She shot a glance to the balcony next door to find a boy leaning on the railing, brow seemingly furrowed in anger. “Uh, are you okay?” Summer asked with caution.
“Huh?” the boy’s eyes widened as he turned his head to face her.
“Hello,” she said with a wave. “What’d that glass door ever do to you?”
The boy’s face softened, blue eyes shining in the sun’s last moments. “Too clean,” he replied shyly. “I, uh, ran into it earlier.” He shifted his body, now only leaning on his side to face her completely. He moved his weight from one foot to another, his cheeks a light shade of pink.
“Ah, the power of Windex.” She placed her coffee mug on the small table before standing up, heading to the side of the balcony closest to his. “So where’re you from? I gotta ask, considering I’ve only heard British accents from my friends when we’re pretending to fancy.” She leaned on the balcony. “Well, and on TV.” Her smile faded. “Wait, you are British, right?”
He smirked deviously as he ran his fingers through his hair. It looked as if he was trying to be suave, he was trying to be flirtatious, but he fumbled with a small knot in his hair. He pulled his hand from his head and grinned awkwardly. He glanced around and leaned on the railing closest to Summer’s railing, clearing his throat to try and play off the hair failure. “Don’t tell anyone but I’m actually an alien from outer space.”
“Wow,” she responded with an over-the-top playful voice. “I didn’t know aliens were so cute.”
“Oh, uh, I mean… You probably say that to all the boys on holiday,” he chuckled but it was obviously forced to cover his nerves as his face turned bright red.
His reaction made her smile, it made her heart rate quicken in excitement and made her stomach flutter with butterflies. She reached her hand out over the balcony. “I’m Summer, and I definitely only say that to the cute ones with British accents.”
He looked apprehensive for a moment and just stared at her hand. He met her eyes and his lips curved upwards. Then he grabbed her hand. “Tom. Tom Beresford-King. Nice to meet you, Summer.”
“Oh, the full name, too? Fancy.” She giggled, which only seemed to turn Tom’s cheeks an even deeper shade of pink. “I’ll join in. Summer Marie Reynolds.” She took a step back and did a dramatic bow. “Nice to meet you, Tom Beresford-King!” She moved back to the railing and placed her elbows on top, leaning over again. He was cute enough, but seemed so awkwardly and painfully shy. “What brings you to Key West?”
He wouldn’t look her right in the eye but cleared his throat. “Holiday. My parents were looking for investments. Apparently, there’s a bar here that has a lot of promise.”
“Chick’s?” she asked.
“Yes,” he nodded, “and you knew that off the top of your head quite quickly. Are you local?”
“Born and bred in Florida.” She sighed. “Hey, you don’t seem like you’re doing anything tonight. My birthday is tomorrow and my friends are having a bonfire. Want to come?”
He tapped his fingers on the railing as he shot his attention back to her. It was almost as if she could tell he was absolutely shocked that she’d asked him to hang out. Was it bad manners? He seemed harmless enough, plus she could use a distraction from her own life. And would it be so bad if the distraction happened to be a super cute British guy? “You’re asking me to go to a party?” He shook his head. “You’re inviting me to your birthday party?”
“Should I not invite you?” She grinned. “Is this, like, the beginning of a summer horror flick? You gonna murder me and my friends?”
“No! No, I would never.”
“Relax, Tom. I was only kidding.”
Summer noticed him starting to fiddle with his hands, picking at his nails and fingers. “What time?”
She lifted herself up from the balcony and moved her hands up and down, pointing to her shirt. “As soon as I change my shirt,” she said, “we’ll go.”
***
Summer waved to her parents as she headed out the door. She was in a bit of a rush, knowing she had been keeping poor Tom waiting for at least ten minutes outside her door. Her mom rushed after her and squeezed her tightly in a hug and mumbled something about growing up too fast. She laughed at her mom, who seemed overly emotional compared to a short fifteen minutes ago. “Be careful,” her dad called out. Summer knew what it meant though, ‘Be careful’ was really ‘I love you’ in dad language.
She opted to wear a new crop top with a cute oversized cardigan. She wore her faded blue jean shorts with white converse, a coffee-stainless white crop top with a tan knitted cardigan, the one that always seemed to fall off her right shoulder a bit. She closed her front door behind her and found Tom leaning against the wall, between their two front doors. He was in his own world, scrolling through his phone with shaky hands and humming to himself. His brown hair fell over his eyes a bit and somehow, even with the parking lot as the background, he looked more gorgeous than he did out on the balcony.
“Ready to go?” She waved and planted a big smile on her face.
He glanced up with wide, shocked eyes and nodded. He looked speechless as he stared at her. It was a bit cute, she thought, he clearly had the opinion that she was pretty. “Yes, sorry, I was distracted.”
“What? Why would you be sorry? I’m the one who took forever to get ready!” she laughed. She grabbed his hand, which made him gasp. “Come on! I can’t be late to my own birthday party!”
He followed behind her as they headed down the stairs and towards the beach. “I don’t think I’ve asked. How old are you?”
“I’m turning eighteen.” She didn’t head towards the beach but towards the street instead, deciding she didn’t want to wade through the sand.
“Oh, so we’re the same age then. I, uh, turned eighteen last month.”
“So where are you from exactly?”
“Windsor,” he answered, “it’s close to London, if that helps at all.”
“You trying to say I don’t know my geography, Tom?”
He cleared his throat and a nervous giggle escaped his lips. “No, uh, I’m not. It’s, um, just not a town people know much about.”
She turned around and placed her hand on his arm, giggling. “I’m screwing with you, relax!” His muscles tensed up, but she was more than sure it was the nerves. The color washed from his face, telling her that he was not flexing his muscles for her. “Sorry.” She pulled her hand away, feeling a bit terrible. Maybe she shouldn’t have invited a total stranger along with her. What was she even thinking?
He stayed quiet, his head hung a bit. He wasn’t the tallest guy around; he was, maybe, around 5’10”, if she was to guess but he towered over her nonetheless standing at 5’ even. She wondered why someone that looked like he did was so apprehensive, how he could seem so closed off. He kept his eyes pointed at the ground as they walked in complete silence.
It would be her birthday in a couple hours but in a way, she wasn’t really feeling the whole beach party vibe, at least not anymore. She stopped walking, to Tom’s surprise. He took a few more steps before looking over his shoulder at her, guilt written all over his face. “You said you were here because your parents like that bar, right?” He nodded. “Want to go?” She pointed across the street, the neon lights glowing in the night.
***
“There’s no way!” She stared at Tom with her eyes and mouth wide open. “I don’t believe you.”
Tom lifted his water to his mouth and took a gulp. He chuckled softly and leaned back in his seat. “I wish I was kidding,” he said as he stared at his glass. “But it’s true. His parents were out of town and we threw this massive bash.” Summer placed her hand over her mouth. The boy was so clearly out of his realm, sitting in her parents’ hole-in-the-wall bar. “I had too much to drink, which was entirely my fault for thinking I should drink out of the bottle.”
“I know we just met,” she said, “but I cannot see you walking around a house with your hand wrapped around the neck of a bottle.” The vision of Tom yelling with a bottle of Grey Goose held over his head was humorous to her, she couldn’t help but giggle trying to imagine it. “How’d your friend even manage to get ahold of your clothes, Tommy boy?”
He huffed a light laugh, clearly amused by the nickname she’d given him. “I, uh, sort of passed out in the bathroom. Tolly and a couple others thought it’d be a right laugh to take my clothes and hide them.”
“Oh no.”
“Oh yes,” he said. “They did leave my boxers thankfully.” He bit his lip and gave her an awkward smile, which was a bit cute. “Anyway, I had to walk across campus like that the next morning. I got a ton of wolf whistles, too.”
Can’t blame them there, Summer thought to herself. She wasn’t normally the girl that had a crush so quickly, especially with someone she hardly knew. There was something calming about his presence though, it was almost as if she’d known him for years. She leaned herself back and glanced him up and down as he gave her a look of confusion. “You know, I can’t say I blame them.”
He blushed again. It was becoming one of her favorite pastimes, making him flustered. “You’re a right charmer, aren’t you?” He wrapped his hand around his glass again and studied it. “Ah, you probably say that to everyone.” It didn’t sound like he meant to say it out loud. How could someone who looked the way he did be so not used to hearing things like that?
“A charmer, yes,” she answered, “but I do not say that to everyone. Ask anyone around, they’ll tell you the same: Summer Reynolds is hard to pin down.” She glanced towards the bottles in front of her behind the bar. It was Wednesday night, which meant the bartenders would be lenient with her sitting right at the bar. While she was the owners’ daughter, they still wouldn’t let her be front and center on a weekend night, especially being underaged. She flagged one of the bartenders down. “Barry! My favorite bartender!”
Barry grumbled a bit but laughed. “Summer, my favorite owners’ daughter.” He walked over slowly, pausing in front of the teenagers. His eyes shifted between the two while he continued to dry a glass with a bar mop. “Guess I should say happy early birthday, right?”
“The best gift would be a drink! Please, Barry? Pretty, pretty please?” She let her lower lip quiver as she pouted jokingly. “And one for my friend, Tom.” Summer lifted her hand and placed it on Tom’s arm. He jumped slightly, stiffening and sitting up a bit straighter upon her touch. She knew she was making him nervous, but the way he reacted made her realize that he had no idea that he had the same effect on her.
“What’ll it be Summer’s friend, Tom?” Barry asked. He kept an intense gaze on Tom.
“Um, maybe a Tom Collins?” He sounded unsure of his response. Summer wondered if Tom even knew what he had just ordered.
Barry stared back with a dazed and puzzled look. He placed the glass he was drying on a rack underneath the bar and narrowed his eyes at Tom. He clearly had no idea what Tom had ordered. “Just give him a Gin and Tonic, Barry,” Summer suggested. “Make it two, please because you’re the absolute best!”
“You can have one and you’ll be staying here until after midnight, kid.” Barry kept his eyes on Tom, almost like a concerned father would. Summer had a feeling her dad would be asking about who this British boy was that all his employees were talking about.
And they did. They stayed and they talked all night, even after midnight. Tom was nothing that she would have imagined for herself. He was timid, he was shy, he was easily flustered. But at the same time, he was brave, he was sweet and she was easily flustered by every move he made.
She grabbed his hand out on the sidewalk, maybe a block away from the condo building. She almost expected him to pull his hand away but he squeezed it in return. Barry had made the drinks so light, she was sure that he didn’t put any alcohol in it at all. She didn’t even drink very much of it. She didn’t need to, she was certain she was drunk on the cute British boy she’d taken on a tour of her town. “What’d you think of the bar?”
“It was cozy,” he said. “So it’s your family’s establishment?” He spoke so eloquently, she thought. The way the neon lights hit his gorgeous blue eyes, with the mixture of the faint moonlight out on the street, she was hooked. He had no idea she was hooked.
They started up the stairs to their doors, which made her heart sink. The night was over and she was stupid enough to think this could even go anywhere. Of course the first time she truly wanted to get to know someone, it would be a boy from overseas who wouldn’t stay long enough. “Yeah, it’s my parents’ bar.” She paused at her front door but he didn’t let go of her hand. The two of them stood in front of one another, both unsure of the next move they should take.
Tom took a long but somehow, shallow breath then chewed at his bottom lip nervously. She took a step closer, even though she knew she shouldn’t. She’d be leaving in September for college, he’d be going back to Windsor at the same time. She shouldn’t but for the exact same reasons she shouldn’t, she knew she should.
She could feel his heart pounding, leaping and racing as she placed a hand on his chest. With a shaking touch, he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to him. She leaned in most of the way but he moved quickly to meet up with her, almost as if he couldn’t believe his luck. Both of them caught their breath, both shocked at the spark that took place when their lips met for the first time.
His jaw was dropped when they pulled away, but she had an untamable smile on her face. “Will I see you tomorrow?” he asked with reddened cheeks.
“I hope so,” she said. She lifted herself to her tip toes and kissed his cheek. “And I hope the day after that, too.”
“And the day after that?”
“And the day after that one, too.”

SEPTEMBER 4TH, 2016
She shouldn’t do this, she thought. But it felt right, it felt like the timing was there, it was perfect. Would she kick herself in the morning for this? Would she kick herself in the morning if she didn’t do it? It was their last night. She knew she’d probably never see him again, as much as it made her heart break to face that realization. Tonight, she wouldn’t think about it. Tonight, she wouldn’t let that thought cross her mind again. Tonight, she would just be his and she would tell herself it would be the same tomorrow as it’d been since June: wake up, see him on the balcony and rush down to the beach together as if it was their last day.
She pressed herself against her chest against him and placed one hand on his arm. She felt nervous as hell as she moved herself on top of him. He didn’t make a sound, but placed his hands on her waist, almost in a too-respectful kind of way.
They had kissed a million times over, they had been wrapped up in each other's arms a million times more than that. He pulled away and stared into her eyes. He looked worried, he looked scared. She’d come to know his expressions so well, she’d come to know him so well. “This isn’t just a fling to me,” he said. “It’s more than that to me.”
“It’s more than that to me, too,” she answered. She cupped his face and smiled.
“No, Summer.” He shook his head and swallowed hard. She could tell he was nervous by the way his eyes moved slightly, the way he was unable to pick one thing to focus on. His breathing was uneasy, his hands barely against her skin even though he was holding her tightly against his body. “I love you.”
She felt the goosebumps prickle against her skin, a feeling of floating as the smile wiped off her face. She felt the tears filling her eyes but she never thought in a million years… “I love you, too.” …that he could feel the same way about her. “I don’t want to think about tomorrow.”
“Then… then don’t.”
But it wasn’t that simple. “But I’ll miss you,” she said. “I’ll miss you and I don’t think I will ever love someone again, not like how I love you.” Her hands fell to her side as she gulped, trying to keep herself from looking like a mess.
He pulled her closer. “I’ll miss you,” he said, “and I’ll never love someone the way I love you. You’ll always be the one for me.”
“Even tomorrow?” she asked.
“And the day after that,” he said. He kissed her gently and sighed. “And the day after that one, too.”
***
AUGUST 29TH, 2022
One night had turned into a week, which turned into two weeks, which moved into a month and then a couple more. She didn’t expect him, she didn’t think she’d fall for some rich pretty boy from overseas, but she did. She knew it was young love, that it could be nothing more than a summer romance. But it didn’t stop her from giving everything she had to him.
That was years ago, six years to be exact, but Summer would be lying if she said she hadn’t thought about him often. There were plenty of times she thought she should look him up, that she should just reach out and see how he’s doing. It was stupid though, she knew it was. She doubted he even thought about her anymore. They’d lost touch many, many years ago. Her parents weren’t around anymore and she’d been avoiding cleaning out their condo. She didn’t live in the Keys anymore, she was up in Nashville. She sat on her bed in her teenage bedroom and sighed. The memories of the place made tears burn in the corners of her eyes, a big ball in her throat made it difficult to swallow. She shook her head and leaned down, pulling out a box from under her bed. She opened it and started sifting through the photos of her adolescent years. Pictures of her and her parents smiling, of her friends at graduation, and then, of course, of her and Tom. A picture she didn’t need to find because the memory was burned in her mind: the night she turned 18 and fell in love with a cute boy with a British accent on vacation one balcony over. She still loved him though. She knew she always would. She would love him tomorrow and the day after that, and the day after that.

I don’t know why i do this to myself but I’ve been rewatching them among us streams and i have so much appreciation for Tommy. Like he’s absolutely horrible at the game and i can understand ppls annoyance but at the same time in his position, even knowing it was a bit, i would just rage quit. They would just vote him off for nothing lmao, Wilburs jokes that literally only works cause of the “brotherly relationship”, or people just being happy he was dead. And like it’s very obvious all just jokes and bits but if i were him i would just never do tasks out of spite.
Omg i just had a thought (an add on to the among us ask) i can’t even imagine how upset todays stan twt would have gotten at these games lmao, people were apparently getting panic attacks because of the George prank on tommy. One time people started tweeting tommy neg because he didn’t put tubbo in the title of video, or even just the reactions to cc tommy accidentally blowing up tubbos things in Minecraft. I would honestly be scared to see how twt would react to that stream where Wilbur went into graphic detail over how he wanted to kill tommy and then when he was caught proceeded to let everyone know how worth it it was to see Tommy’s body drop to the floor. I’m really just glad they don’t play among us anymore but also it would be so funny to watch Twitters reactions.
yeah i never really found among us that entertaining in the first place, but it was always real rough to watch from tommy's pov. im not like mad at the jokes or anything because it's literally just a bit even if it's not one i find particularly funny. like if i was rolling my eyes every time tommy got voted out, i'm sure someone out there was pissing their pants with laughter, so it's literally fine.
tommy's a real good sport though, in any situation he's willing to lose and set himself up to be the butt of his joke, that's why "tommy is a dumb child" is a common easy bit for anyone he's streaming with. like wilbur once said "tommy purposely digs himself into a hole" (or something along those lines). like by loudly boasting that he can beat the blade in pvp, he's setting up a really funny bit where he dies in two seconds. by being a little shit to niki, it's funny when she shuts him down with "that's because you're a child, tommy." theoretically it's the same idea with "tommy is annoying and bad at among us, so him being instavoted out every round will be funny," however, the problem is that while it is funny from other perspectives im sure, the fact that tommy was also streaming and never actually got to play the game made it kind of boring to watch, so it got old quickly. like he was just floating around doing tasks and eating biscuits, not great entertainment for tommy himself. at least that's my theory for why the among us streams just aren't that fun from tommy's pov.
also about the "not doing tasks out of spite thing" one of my favorite exchanges from the early among us streams was tommy asking "what happens if i don't do my tasks after i'm dead." and sneeg replying "then you're screwing the team over tom." and then tommy goes "yeah but you all said 'im so glad he's dead' after i died.' to which sneeg replies 'yeah fair enough.'
and finally about twitter,,, oh my god they wouldve fucking rioted. you remember what happened when wilbur wouldn't let tubbo have the fucking color yellow for his among us character? and his entire chat started yelling at him and he had to end stream and raid tommy who gave chat a stern talking to. that times a thousand but like every single time they played.

Never Mine
Sebastian Stan x Fanfiction
Part One
"With my dog as my witness, to whoever was riding my ass if they didn't back off my bumper I was going to stop in the middle of the road and rip their windshield wipers completely off!"
That type of anger coiled around me like a snake, because there was nothing that bugged me more than someone driving bumper to bumper. The long and exasperated breath I just released helped ease the tension out of my body temporarily. Just in time for reason to settle in. Though in reality it wasn't like I was actually going to jump out of my car and confront this road demon. Who clearly needed to take a course on etiquettes of the road. What I did know was that whoever was behind the wheel of the car had headlights that were so blinding I am sure extraterrestrials in space could spot them.
Trying to find the calm in the situation I focused on the road ahead of me. What little road I could see for that matter. Which wasn't exactly much. I had checked the forecast earlier in the day with the report of it showing that there was to be only clear and blue skies. By the amount of downpour before me you would think there was a tear in the sky if that was how rain fell. I just needed to hang tight for a few more miles until I reached my exit to stop for the night.
I had been driving for nine consecutive hours and it wasn't until the third hour I realized I was not cut out for long distance driving. The plane ticket I turned down from my father was starting to look like a missed opportunity. I opted out for Cooper's sake. I just rescued the little guy a few short weeks ago and I didn't have the heart to leave him alone so soon.
Despite having only six more hours of this painful drive I needed out of my car. A hot shower and a bed was calling my name like a siren's call was to a dazed sailor at sea. I was fervidly drawn to it. Granted, I wasn't exactly going the speed limit in my own defense. Simply because I chose to be a cautious driver not a careless one unlike the dip shit behind me. Cooper and I were going to get to Sonoma, California in one piece if I had anything to do with it! I had no intention to speed in the rain even if it annoyed the person behind me. After all I was driving down a one lane road there was literally nothing else I could do but drive forward.
Taking a glance up at my trusty Garmin my gps projected that at this rate I wouldn't make it to my hotel for another hour and a half. Ahead of me the sky was starting to look like a terrifying shade of gray and to top it off the dismal weather was becoming more and more hard to drive in. I could barely see the paint on the pavement. My defrosters seemed to have given up on me as I began to notice that my rearview mirror fogged up as though it was twilight hour.
I needed to pull over to try to wait out the heavy rainfall. The only problem was that I did not know where I was nor could I see where the road even had an end. The cheap gas station coffee was starting to wear off and the pep talks could no longer motivate me. The words of encouragement quickly transitioned into self deprecating quips of "I can not fucking do this!"
I was too far from home to turn back now and hearing a lecture from my dad despite being well beyond the ages of even receiving one, certainly would not stop him from scolding at my absence. I am more than certain that fiancée number three would not mind if I missed their prenuptial celebration. Especially if arriving on time meant I would be showing up dismembered. It was official I was going to die in this storm.
All of sudden like I called upon a bad omen my tiny Kia Forte jerked forward. I thought I accidentally stomped on the gas pedal too hard without realizing it. When it happened again I knew exactly what it was. Clearly the driver had mistaken this for a game of bumper cars. I laid the palm of my hand on the center of my steering wheel and relentlessly pressed my horn. Not sure what that was going to necessarily ward off , but I had to try something in the efforts that they would leave me alone.
Cooper's head shot up from his bed in the backseat. He looked just as displeased and annoyed as I felt. Why wouldn't they slow down? Is the question I could not figure out. I don't know if it was all the Stephen King that I read, but my paranoia was increasing as I started to settle on the possibility that they were now following me.
Maybe I was tired?
Maybe my imagination truly was getting the best of me?
Or maybe whoever that person was also suddenly decided to take the same random exit as I was taking.
I didn't think. I veered my car off to the right and got on the first breakaway from this seemingly endless road. I had no idea where I was headed at this point and neither did my Garmin. It made multiple attempts to reroute itself, but even that could not locate where I was. I took an unexpected detour by driving off into the middle of nowhere with a now stalker in my midsts.
Adrenaline now filling up my bloodstream. I gave my steering wheel the death grip and drove as fast as the tire tracks of my car would guide me. On a midsize billboard to my left I saw a logo for a gas station and a non franchised bed & breakfast saying it was right up the road. I was taking a chance by trusting that the establishment was clean and safe. I just needed to go where a crowd of people would be. The battery on my phone was likely dead and yes this was now becoming the opening sequence for a King novel. I'd laugh if my heart wasn't fluttering as fast a hummingbird's wing.
I managed to make out lights ahead as I neared the petrol station first. However, it just about looked abandoned. The dim white lights flickered around the desolate parking lot. I saw only two freight trucks parked side by side and I immediately thought
. . .hell no.
I kept driving forward in the hopes that the bed and breakfast sign wasn't last updated in the early nineties. I nearly combusted from relief when I finally saw it. Several cars and mini vans lined up with people inside of them probably doing the same thing that I was. I didn't plan on staying the night I just planned on staying long enough to hide out from the rain and from the trouble that still followed my trails.
Luckily there were free parking spaces close to the entrance. It was still hard to make out what the place truly looked like. From my view in the car the rain made it look like it was a melting oil painting. In a swift motion I put my car in park, turned my ignition off, reached in the back to grab Cooper and grabbed ahold of my purse in the other arm. I bolted out of my car for the door.
It felt as though I was running through a hurricane. I was completely drenched. I could barely keep my eyes from closing as I ran up the slippery steps in my worn Toms praying that I wouldn't eat concrete. There was an awning over the door that offered relief from the storm's cruel embrace . Looking down at the fuzzy brown welcome mat I noticed a quote was scribbled out on it.
"some beautiful paths
can't be discovered without getting lost."
As I reached for the doorknob I couldn't help but notice the intricate design. I'm aware of how wrong the timing was to fawn over something so utterly mundane. I just could not conceal the fact that I was a sucker for antiques roadshow and architectural designing. Growing up with a dad that built and reconstructed vintage furniture one might pick up on the interest. It was a white privacy doorknob with hand painted roses, with a Victorian long plated silver keyhole. The sound of distant car door slamming snapped me out of my daze. I turned my head in the direction of the sound low and behold it was that same car. Crazy thing is I didn't see anyone by it.
Instinct guided me forward considering my brain was scrambling with worry. I ushered myself inside and it was as though I fell into a pink wonderland. From the pink carpet to the multicolored pink pinstripe wallpaper. Hot pink roses seemed to have been the main theme for the lobby. There were various black and silver picture frames with photos of pink roses hanging on every wall. On every surface my eyes could catch, red and pink plastic roses sat in circular olive green vases. It was certainly....something. I thought I was doing the most logical thing by coming inside, but it quickly dawned on me that I saw no one around.
"Hello?" I cautiously called out.
I paced myself as I walked up to the front desk, simultaneously looking around for any potential red flags. My right arm was going numb, my little guy was tiny but felt like I was lugging around a sack of potatoes. I wandered away from the desk to poke my head around the place. There was a entry way that led to a dinning area with a handful of seats adorned with of course pink table settings. I was standing next to a spiral staircase to what I assumed led to the rooms. There was only one door that held a sign for a bathroom. Perhaps there was a power outlet I could use long enough to charge my phone to call my dad.
The same door I walked in swung open and droplets of rain was blown in by the wind. A shiver rolled down my spine, sending a myriad of sparks that shot through my body. Turning around a strange sensation filled the pits of my stomach. It felt like butterflies and moths had taken up space there. Excitement and fear. I just stood completely mute like I had never seen a man before. Well to my defense I hadn't seen ones that look like him in my town. Without even seeing my reflection I had an inkling as to the state of my appearance. I was utterly perplexed by how he pulled off the kissed by an ocean look. To embarrass myself further of course my dog chose that moment to shake water off of his fur on to me.
"Really Coop?" I tried to hide my disgust, but he got it around the corner of my mouth! The good looking stranger offered a half smile that probably pitied my overall state.
"Is the black Kia parked out yours?" Even his voiced oozed sex appeal. He angled his frame so he could face me. There was about an arm length of distance between us. His eyes practically bore into my face I suppose waiting for me to say something. Must have been the buzzcut, the facial scuff, or the fact that some creep was still parked outside waiting to do who knows what. But my thoughts were not where they should have been.
I blinked and straightened up my posture. "Yeah why?" I finally answered.
It was a causal question, yet it felt completely random like there was something else to it.Neither of us spoke for a few seconds. The silence was so thick it would take a hacksaw to cut through.
"Well I'll be damned! I didn't think I would get to see you until after you got back from your trip in California." A woman most likely in her late sixties came rushing down the stairs for him. She draped her arms around his body clearly taking him by surprise. Her cotton candy colored pink bouffant made up for most of her height. Sebastian returned her embrace. Although it looked extremely awkward considering he stared at me the whole time and I stood there watching.
"Moe's old truck didn't give you too much trouble did it?" She asked.
"No it still got some life left in it." Sebastian's jaw went slack and he looked from her to me once more. Only this time he was looking at me with a cold glare. Realization suddenly crashed into me like a wild horse.

my thoughts on captain america: civil war (2016)
wow i haven't watched this movie in a while everyone looks so different
okay yeah, start the movie with bucky being tortured why not, it's not like i feel bad enough for him already
seb... babe i love you but who made you say отвечач instead of отвечать (okay okay, i'm just joking i know it's a small pronouncation mistake)
steve&nat teaching wanda how to watch her back during a mission is so cute (also wow, my queen has come a long way since this movie)
"he's cute go on pet him" SAM STOP PQJDOWBDIW
i feel like rumlow could've been used more in these movies why did they just kill him off like that
"who's the homeless person on the couch" i love howard
"if that's true you'll be a great man someday" and he did become a great man howard, he did, indeed
tony feels guilty about sokovia, wanda feels guilty about lagos and bucky feels guilty about his past. give them a break marvel
zemo switching into his own accent as soon as he got the hydra agent tied up lmao
"compromise where you can, and where you can't, don't. even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. even when the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree and say no. you move." sharon believed that with her whole heart and look what they did to her now I'M MAD
"staying together is more important than how we stay together" and she gave her life for them at the end no matter how much she didn't want to go
THE KING HAS ARRIVED (we miss you chadwick)
''we have orders to shoot on sight" meanwhile bucky: oooh lemme get some plums
ok so caramel chocolate bars are bucky's favourite, that's good to know
awww bucky couldn't even control his strength in this movie (throwing people off the stairs, hitting them with bricks, punching the shit out of them) and now he is barely even using his metal arm bc he's scared of killing people AWW MY BABY
i swear to god if sam wasn't there to save these two's asses all the time *eye roll*
oOOHHH THE CHASING SCENE WAS SO GOOD
when bucky grabbed that motorcycle we all felt something right?
i remembered how much it broke my heart when rhodey said "congratulations sam, you're a criminal"
vision cooking for wanda is still the cutest thing in this movie
"so you like cats" SAM
the fact that they were so scared of bucky that they had to put him in an extremely protected capsule thing... THE POWER HE HOLDS
"pregnant?" "uh, definitely not" and a few years later we see morgan wearing her mother's helmet WHY AM I MAKING MYSELF CRY
i love how steve was actually about to sign the accords until tony mentioned wanda
i forgot how much i wanted to punch zemo in this movie, he was literally so desperate to find bucky that he had to turn 7 billion people against him
"let's talk about your home, not romania, certainly not brooklyn no" well, we have some news for you zemo
the look on bucky's face when he sees the notebook and how he immediately starts screaming after hearing "рассвет" hurts my soul
BUCKYNAT BUCKYNAT BUCKYNAT
sebastian looked so ripped in this movie holy moly
wtf he really is like a death machine he could've easily killed steve in that helicopter scene
OH I FORGOT THIS WAS TOM'S FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE MCU WTF
"it's so hard for me to believe she is someone's aunt", "we come in all shapes and sizes you know" AUNT MAY I ADORE YOU
"i retire for like what 5 minutes and it all goes to shit" well he's not wrong
"move or you will be moved" ayo always steals the show with one line (tfaws spoilers guess?)
the scene that started it all guys "can you move your seat up" "no"
"thinks for thanking of me" SCOTT LANG IS A TREASURE ALRIGHT
"suit up" YEAH AND DON'T THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES SHARON WILL PAY FOR BRINGING YOUR TOYS
when the craziest thing happened in the mcu was spidey joining the avengers ah good old times
the airport fight was sooo good omg
i love t'challa is just like ''just lemme kill barnes i don't care about your white nonsense"
"i didn't kill your father" "then why did you run?" UHMMM I DON'T KNOW SIR MAYBE BECAUSE YOU'RE ALWAYS TRYING TO CHOKE HIM BEFORE HE HAS A CHANCE TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF??
scott's "hohoho" will never not be funny for me
this movie got me so hyped up for a possible buckynat storyline dude i'm still mad, they had such potential
peter getting scared of tony approaching him shows how hard their job actually is i feel so bad for them
vision accidentally shooting rhodey OH MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THIS
and wtf did sam do tony for fucks sake
zemo calling the hotel from moscow so they can find the body in the bathtub lsndjsbdjs he's such a diva
avengers getting treated like criminals is still pissing me the fuck off
"you better go get a bad cop cause you're gonna have to go mark furhman on my ass to get information out of me" OKAY MY FAV SAM WILSON LINE
zemo killing all the winter soldiers instead of waking them up is a great way to show his ideology actually
"there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes" well that sounds poetic
i don't know which is worse: seeing tony watching his mom killed, or the amount of guilt bucky must've felt in that moment, or the way tony managed to keep his cool until he realized steve acted like he didn't know the entire time AGH IT HURTS
"i remember all of them" and that look on his face SEBASTIAN STOP
the fight between steve&tony&bucky was actually one of the best scenes in the mcu in my opinion, especially when bucky's arm gets destroyed (seriously tho, watching the way he pushes tony into the wall, trying to rip off the arc reactor with his metal arm and the fury in his eyes agh i love this scene)
aww zemo deleting the voice message of his wife before attempting to kill himself broke my heart
i remember crying in the cinema watching steve and tony beat the shit out of each other... my friend who's never seen any of the mcu movies before was looking at me like i was an alien
bucky still trying to protect steve by gripping tony's foot i- HE LOVES STEVE SO MUCH
oh when tony lifted his hand to protect his face with that terried look, he thought steve was gonna finish him
i!!! wanna!!! die!!!
"are you tony stank?" stan lee we miss you, you beautiful man♡
"i've been on my own since i was 18" having multiple illnesses, and probably mental ones as well, steve only had bucky on his side. he was the only one who always got his back, making sure he was okay, always protecting him. so he knew he had to do the same. bucky was the best friend he ever had.
soo, this gave me enough trauma for today. i think i'm gonna go cry until the next episode of tfaws.

I’m here to prove that Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-man/peter parker in The Amazing Spider-Man is objectively the best love action adaptation of the character. In this essay I will....(yes this is really happening)
Edit: 10/20/20- i want to indulge myself in spiderman content but finding non mcu spiderman content is exhausting so imma update this instead
TL;DR
Andrew Garfield is my favorite of the 3 Spider-Man actors. TAS’s Peter is more fun and dynamic than the cookie cutter “shy introverted nerd that has a crush on a girl who’s way out of his league” Peter in Tobey Maguire’s movies. I enjoy Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character, but hate the way Disney has written the movies.  I enjoy the characters, plot, and humor of The Amazing Spider-Man far more than the other 2, and i deeply wish we had gotten the third movie with the canon BIder-Man of Andrew’s (and my) dreams.
[DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NOT SEEN THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 OR ANY MCU SPIDERMAN MOVIES OUTSIDE OF CLIPS AND REVIEWS ITS ALSO BEEN A VERY HOT MINUTE SINCE IVE SEEN A TOBEY MAGUIRE MOVIE]
Characterization
Most arguments against Andrew Garfield’s Spidey( AG’s from now on) begin and ends with “he was a good Spider-Man but a bad Peter Parker”. This references an outdated post comparing all three Spidey actors.(Id attach the image here but i dont want the post to be too long(thats a lie this is so long what am i doing with my life)) The post also claims that Tobey played a good Peter and a poor Spidey; and that Tom is good at both “roles”.(Honestly I think it seems silly that this seems obey the “third time’s the charm” rule but thats just me).  Most people using this seem to be Tobey stans who have forgotten or ignored the rest of the post funnily enough, but the ones that go further into the WHY AG is a poor Peter are also incorrect. This argument also ignores the idea that there can be more than one version of Peter Parker which is blatantly incorrect.  Just look at Into the Spiderverse or the PS4 game; these provide 4(5 if you count the pig) versions of Peter themselves, and that doesnt even include the comics.
Arguments that go further in depth claim that the AS Peter is too cool or well liked by his peer to be a “true” Peter Parker. The evidence for this seems to be that Peter has a skateboard.(which what? didnt realize that having a skateboard would instantly make you cool brb guys). Adding to that i dont really see where people get the idea that Peter is popular or well liked. While looking for complaints i found this qutoe from reddit(theyve since deleted it looks like but i’ll add a link in the notes) “He's angsty, pretty socially awkward, has an aptitude for science, and is kind of an outsider. He gets bullied by Flash and he gets his ass kicked after trying to stand up to Flash. He isn't a "cool" person in any way (until the ending, in which he's best buds with Flash, so I'll give you that). While Maguire is more accurate to the 60s comics where Peter in high school is just a fucking loser with basically no friends, in the ultimate comics, Peter is more of the kid who has a small amount of friends, but isn't popular.”. Honesty i fully agree with this because once again, other versions of a character are allowed to exist. You can dislike one version, but its silly to dislike something for not being exactly like another thing.
Ive also heard that Peter isnt “nerdy enough” in this movie which really doesnt make any sense considering the entire plot happens because Peter was looking into some of his parents’ research. If he wasn't interested in looking further into his father’s work what reason would he have to go to Oscorp where he’s bitten by the spider? Why would he have become Dr. Conner’s assistant? If he wasn’t intelligent how did he develop the web shooters?(something that Tobey!Peter doesn't have to do out of plot convenience might i add).
Another complaint i see is that the quips he uses in the movie(the first one specifically it seems) makes him seem like an asshole. Honestly thats a fair complaint, but i think its a good bit of characterization; espcially if he does get better about it in the second movie like the internet suggests. The Peter in this movie is a rightfully angsty teen; of course he acts a bit of an ass to criminals(also i feel like its important to mention that he’s like that to criminals? its not like hes being a dick for no reason).
Compare this with the Tobey Maguire(TM) movies. Like i said i haven’t seen these in awhile but as far as i’m aware TM’s Peter doesn't really do anything particularly nerdy in the film? I may have forgotten something( ok in the scene before he gets bitten he knows a cool spider fact) but he doesn’t have to invent the web-shooters because they came with his powers and he’s only at Oscorp in the first place because it’s a school field trip that he appears to be taking photos for. This Peter does fit the definition of outcast(friendless and bullied for it), but honestly i just dont like him. He’s weird and something about the character makes me feel like i should be a little grossed out every time he looks at MJ at the beginning of the movie.
I honestly don’t have any complaints for Tom Holland’s(TH’s)Spidey. Tom is a great actor and from what ive seen i enjoy his portrayal of the character.( He made me cry when i character i actively dislike died).
Story
I cant really say much for TAS story. It’s interesting but nothing special really. However, there is one scene that i don’t think i’ve seen anything like since( the closest would probably be the train scene in the original trilogy).
The crane scene. Early in the film Peter saves a boy from a car that has fallen off of a bridge, and at the end of the movie this becomes relevant again when it is uncertain that Peter will be able to get to the lizard to stop him in time.(as Peter is already injured and pretty far from the lizard’s location). The boy’s father is then revealed to be a construction worker who recognizes that Spider-man is going to need help to get to the lizard; he remembers how Spider-Man saved his son and organizes the rest of the construction workers to build a path out of crane arms for SM to swing from. All of them are putting themselves in danger by not evacuating, but SM’s actions in the first act of the film motivate them to do what’s right.
I love this scene primarily because it highlights something that i think is a really important part of Spider-Man’s character; his connection to the people he saves. SM is often shown interacting with and chatting with the people he has saved after the fact. One comic shows Peter accidentally scaring some bullies and then taking the time to ride the bus to school with them to continue their conversation and educate the students on bullying.( There’s definitely more but this is off the top of my head).
Another scene in TAS that i love is shortly before the crane scene when Peter is originally attempting to make his way across the city to stop the lizard, and he is shot down by the police. They manage to unmask him before Peter comes to his senses( he had just been shot and fallen pretty far out of the sky in his defense). From there Peter is able to deal with the police while keeping any of them from getting a good look at his face. The one cop he cant take out happens to be Gwen Stacey’s father who had previously had an argument with Peter about Spider-Man(Peter obviously on SM’s side and Mr. Stacey against SM). Peter turns and allows Captain(?) Stacey to see his face. I believe that this is an example of an unwilling identity reveal done right. i really enjoyed this moment because Peter had just shown that he likely could have gotten out of this encounter with his identity in tact as he had just taken down however many men. This implies that it was an active choice on Peter’s end to trust that Captain Stacey would ultimately do the right thing and allow Peter to go fight the Lizard, rather than a final desperate attempt to get away unscathed. Whether or not this interpretation of the scene is correct or not it still gives the character a bit more agency than some versions have done with their identity reveals.
In Spider-Man 2 Peter starts to lose his powers because he’s having internal conflict about wether or not he should be Spider-Man. Honestly thats kinda neat and i might want to give that a rewatch. As for the one i have seen i don’t have any complaints. I do however prefer the way that Peter was bitten in TAS because it was a result of him poking around where he shouldn’t’ve been rather than him just happening to be standing in the right place for a spider to land on him.
Onto TH’s movies; the way Disney has treated Spidey in the MCU is why TH’s is my least favorite version of the character. I feel like too much of the story revolves around Iron Man; Iron Man made Peter’s suit and equipment, Iron Man introduces Peter to the MCU(via blackmail but thats another rant for another annoyingly long post), its Iron Man that “makes” Spidey in this universe rather than Spidey being self-made. In Homecoming(which remember i havent seen outside of clips so bear with me) most of the conflict is cause directly or indirectly by Tony’s refusal or inabilty to communicate with the teenager he’s meant to be mentoring
For one the entire incident with the ferry could have very easily been avoided had Tony bothered to communicate with Peter enough to tell him that the situation was being taken care of. On top of that at the moive’s climax Peter is shown trying to get in contact with Happy(from what ive picked up isnt he a chauffeur? like idk his deal i just know he’s someone Peter got pawned off onto after Civil War). Peter even goes as far as to somehow hack into Happy’s phone(i think thats what happened it was a weird tech thing that shouldve been a red flag that the call was important though) but instead of listening; Peter is ignored. If this was a different kind of movie Peter literally could have died and itd be the fault of Happy and Tony like..... A large portion of conflict comes from characters being incompetent and not communicating and thats just poor storytelling.
Before this turns too much into an anti mcu rant id also like to say that the way they did Civil War was really dumb considering that Peter defects to Cap’s side in the comics, but whatever.
Also i loathe the way they handled the identity reveal at the end of Far From Home. With MCU movies most people know to expect an end credits scene by now, but typically that scene is not important to understand what’s happening in the films; they just aren’t important. Putting an identity reveal here makes it seem significantly less important than it is. On top of that i dislike their use of J Jonah Jameson for this scene.
JJJ is a character who has been repeatedly shown to have a genuinely good heart. All of his anger comes from a place of love for his city(he even says this hemself in the ps4 game when May writes in to tell him that he needs help). He hates Spider-Man because SM reminds him of the masked man who killed his wife; JJJ has never been able to get past that( and Peter’s antagonism of him definitely doesnt help) However, JJJ has been shown to care for people; he has a son who he often brags about, and one comic shows that JJJ is paying Peter for “amateur” quality photos because he knows that Peter is having a hard time and “just need some help”. JJJ has even learned Peter’s identity before and kept his secret for him(seriously though i cant remember the name of the comic but its defiantly worth the read), and in the original trilogy when Goblin threatens JJJ he claims that he doesn’t know who sends in the photos of Spidey because he does it via email( this is a lie). The MCU will have a very difficult time convincing me that JJJ would ever out a teenager’s identity and put him in danger like that. It goes too far against his character.(this could be hypocritical of me to say considering how i just insisted that multiple versions of a character can exist but whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
This is accidentally turning into an MCU rant but id also like to say that i hate the lack of a TH!Spidey origin movie because it gives you no motivaion for Peter becoming SM or explanation of his powers; most people will know these things but if youre unfamiliar with the character its bound to be confusing(and im a sucker for origin movies)

Okay so I recently saw a tik tok basically saying Dixie Damelio should have stayed with her ex boyfriend as he treated her better, but she dumped him when she got famous. She responded saying, they broke up when he went to college and are still friends but go off . Now I don’t know anything about Dixie that’s not important but it just reminded me of the way a lot of Tom and tomdaya stans talk about Tom, as if he’s a fictional charecter who we can be like he was better with x y z. We don’t know much about his life and past relationships even the most obsessive fans only know about 20%. Now this isn’t a dig at you as from the account you seem like very rational, but the way some fans are like “omg he hasn’t liked nadias posts, do you think him and zendaya are going to get back together”, people are talking about Tom as if he’s a charecter in a tv show and we’re predicting what’s gonna happen next season. Toms a person, he dated zendaya when he was 21-23 sorry but very few people end up with who they were with that young, you still have so much to go through, and now he’s with Nadia, and they might break up at some point, and he might date a lot of people before he gets married, because he’s a person, he’s not a fictional charecter you get to decide the canon for, or you get to be disappointed when he doesn’t end up with who you were expecting, the whole zendaya, Nadia and Tom love triangle people have invented literallly sounds like a subplot on a tv show not reality. It’s ok to wonder and speculate I do to, like I’m hoping Him and Nadia are still together, but we need to be able to keep fact from fiction. Sorry this wasn’t meant to be as long as I made it
moi:  I’m not sure why you felt compelled to send me this.  You do realize this is a tea/crack account, right?  It’s in my bio.  That said, you’re right – we get only glimpses into their lives.  We see their brand and what they want us to see, along with the occasional fan commentary that reveals they’re human after all, paparazzi and fan sightings, accidental posts (e.g., Nadia sunning herself in Tom’s garden, Tomdaya Thanksgiving), their friends and families’ posts or spilled tea, some of their actions, and over time, a plethora of telltale signs that add up to Tomdaya or Tadia or whatever the case may be.
People are entitled to feel disappointment.  Many of Tom’s fans are disappointed he’s dating someone other than them.  That’s perfectly fine as long as they don’t cross the line into his personal life.  I’ve seen, for myself, those who have taken it upon themselves to express their displeasure with both Nadia (present) and Z (past) on their social media accounts or those of their friends’ and family.  That’s crossing the line, imo, and I not only frown upon it, I have discouraged it on the blog.
I can’t and don’t pretend to influence who others ship or don’t ship.  People ship whomever they want to ship, and that includes people who will never be together.  I ship Star-Lord and Gamora, but I know that irl, Zoe and Chris are happily married to their respective spouses.  As for Tom and Zendaya, I appreciate their continuing support of one another and I look forward to the next Spider-man sequel.
I’ve repeatedly said I ship Tom with happiness.  Sure, I have my opinions about that, but that and $5 will buy me a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Dating Tom Holland would include
A/N: I know there are tons of these ones, but I couldn't help myself. :))
- Hitting it off since the first moment you saw each other
- At first it was just a mild crush
- That soon escalated into something stronger
- I mean his accent, just UGH
- But not just that
- He is literally the sweetest creature
- And he’s capable of making you melt with just the tiniest effort
- You telling your friends about him
- Them shipping the two of you
- Your best friend dropping subtle hints you like him
- Being nervous most of the time, fearing he will find out
- One time you were talking to your friend on the phone
- Making the mistake of putting the call on speaker
- Tom casually walking into the room and overhearing
- At first he heard his name in the conversation and that’s what made him stay and listen
- It wasn't his fault that he "accidentally" heard the WHOLE conversation
- Him hearing about you crush on him
- Trying to get out of the room as silent as possible
- Tripping over everything on his way out
- You turning around and freezing when you see him standing there
- "d-did you hear t-that?"
- "uuh….may..be"
- you blushing……a lot
- Awkward silence before he decides to speak up
- "if..if it makes it any better, I like you too"
- "you do?"
- "yeah"
- Having a huge smile on your faces
- Suddenly hearing your friend on the phone
- "Finally"
- Having the most loving, caring, goofiest, relationship
- His mom adoring you, and secretly planning the wedding
- his brothers loving to spend time with you
- Tom being jealous of his brothers' affection towards you
- But loving how you are around them
- you being such a clumsy ass
- him teasing you about it
- Him making you nervous sometimes (even though you are dating)
- And him enjoying it
- He loves telling you you're beautiful
- nicknames
- "love"
- "darling"
- "sweetheart"
- "baby"
- "babe"
- "gorgeous"
- "prinCESS"
- "babYGIRL"
- you blushing a deep red with each and every nickname, no matter how many times you've heard them before.
- He loves how he can make you blush very easily
- when he catches you blushing, which is often, he usually pokes your cheeks
- and you blush even more
- but, there are few times when YOU catch HIM blushing
- oh and do you enjoy teasing the hell out of him
- "well look at how the tables have turned"
- him shutting you up by kissing you
- one kiss escalates to a make out session
- soft kisses EVERYWHERE
- kisses on your forehead
- on your nose
- cheeks
- jaw
- shoulders
- and some other places ;)
- him taking care of you when you're sick
- you taking care of him when he's sick
- cuddling with him after a stressful day at work
- his head lying on your lap while you run your hands through his hair is his favorite thing after coming home from work
- it's also your favorite thing to do
- Ok, so many many make out sessions when you haven’t seen each other in a long time
- Adoring each other completely
- Loving each other unconditionally
- Spending lots and lots of time together when you can
- Basically being attached by the hip
- Harrison third wheeling a lot
- But you try to make him feel less of a third wheel
- Him being annoyed by the two of you
- But loving how happy you make Tom and vice versa
- Getting to know the Avengers cast
- Fangirling over the three Chris' and Sebastian Stan
- Because oh my god, Sebastian Stan
- Tom getting jealous
- You assuring him you won't ever leave him
- Having pointless arguments over pointless things
- But it's okay because you both know they're never going to affect your relationship
- And in the end of the day you are one of the sweetest, most loving and caring couples
- Who would do anything for the other
- Lots of love
- This made me wish I had a boyfriend
- Peace out
- See ya next time
Wow was this long. Tell me what you think. :))))

Wednesday Roundup 6.12.2017
Another short but completely satisfying week for the Roundup! And this time we have something of a theme -- genre stories and, especially, genre stories that have developed from or are directly a part of Japanese storytelling tropes, which is engaging, interesting, and would have been rather ingenious on my part if it had been on purpose. Which... sure! Totally was on purpose. How smart of me. I’m sure anyone who believes me there is very impressed.
Regardless, let’s get right into the thick of it~
Tumblr media
IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dark Horse’s Usagi Yojimbo, Viz’s Yona of the Dawn
IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2011-present) #77 Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Damian Couceiro, Ronda Pattison
Tumblr media
I have to really give it up to the ingenuity that goes into IDW’s take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles once again because I am just so stunned and amazed by how near flawlessly they are able to make something that all fans are most certainly familiar with and turning it not just on its head but providing the familiar in completely surprising and innovative ways to where even I, the Turtle Historian that I am, can’t predict where we’re going with this.
It’s not exactly novel that the Turtles had a relationship with the Triceratons prior to the Invasion forces. That dates back to Eastman and Laird’s original stories in the 80s. But every representation of the Triceratons since then and even then have provided an outsider’s perspective as the turtles were caught up in a conflict completely outside of their personal connections and to which the Triceratons were a slaver, gladitorial, and genuinely unrelatable force of evil from the start. With only one-off exceptions of solitary Triceratons they befriended (or... dated in Mikey’s case because the early 2000s Vol. 4 comics were weird), the perspective of the Triceratons was never something that had shades of gray.
After all, they were such a warring, barbaric race that their original origins had it that they accidentally blew up their own planet which had spawned conflict with forces like the Federation to begin with.
But in the IDW comics, villains come in layers and dimensions, to the point that even Stockman as the hilariously played straight Mad Scientist antagonist, is someone that the Turtles and April can conceivably work with to meet the same ends. To the point that we’re at odds with Master Splinter, that him working with Bishop’s forces is not shocking even in the gut wrenching feelings of betrayal.
Everyone has their motivations and everyone has good reasons for those motivations, most especially the Triceratons themselves. They want a home. They were molded by generations of warring and enslavement. They were attacked first. And the camaraderie that they have with the Turtles genuinely makes them not just sympathetic but heartbreakingly backed into a corner.
This is great storytelling made all the better with solid art and even more solid execution of it all together. I am constantly impressed with this series and that doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon. 5/5 stars well earned.
Tumblr media
Dark Horse’s Usagi Yojimbo (1984-present) #164 Stan Sakai
Tumblr media
Now that we’re on part two of three of this storyline, and fully progressed in the overarching mystery of what I’m for the time being referring to as the Inspector Ishida Mystery, I’m feeling more and more comfortable in assuring new readers of Usagi Yojimbo that the current arc is just a fantastic jumping on point for new readers. Because, really it’s been one of the most engaging and entertaining storylines arguably since the original “Grasscutter” saga itself.
One of the things that Stan Sakai is a master of is the episodic narrative, and how easy it is for readers to engage at any point that they start picking up issues and in any order. And while that continues to be true -- which is marvelous in the current age of pushing for trade-style storylines -- more and more he’s also presenting the outline of the larger narrative and rewarding readers for engaging on every level.
That’s a difficult balance between two very different forms of storytelling but I find myself further awed by just how well Sakai manages it. He truly is one of the great modern masters of the medium and it’s just a comic that fans of the medium have to eventually read for themselves to get a full appreciation for it all.
Tumblr media
Viz’s Yona of the Dawn (2009-present) Vol. 9 Mizuho Kusanagi
Tumblr media
One of the fascinating things about the current landscape of media is that we have so many examples of how to not only deconstruct certain genres and storyforms, but we’re really living in a reconstruction of them the likes of which hasn’t had the momentum or tenacity that it has now at least in my lifetime. And I think there’s probably no better example of that right now for fantasy and fairy tales than Yona of the Dawn. Yona has been running since 2009, but it’s pretty clear why it was picked up for an anime in the last few years and also why interest in the original manga has reached the English speaking fandom more and more. I can definitely say that there’s more Yona on my dash here on tumblr this year than there was in previous years and it’s certainly not because I follow different or more blogs!
Yona is a feminist reconstruction of fairy tales, of the roles of princesses, and of the nature of strength. The more our titular protagonist yearns and struggles to prove herself again and again by masculine measures, she is inspiring to those around her. But what makes her endearing and what earns her the faith and love of her newfound family and all the people they have helped throughout her kingdom on their journey, is the strength of her more feminine traits and how she does not lose them but instead yields them even more powerfully as she grows into a woman.
I feel like, more than any other volume officially translated yet, Vol. 9 does the most to portray this dichotomy directly and because of that, her reverse harem of faithful suitors’ relationship development with her and with each other this time around feels more earned and feels more respectful of the character that Yona already is. And with the setup at the end, with the second son of the Fire Tribe’s general coming to face her once more, it’s clear that there will be even more juxtaposition between the Yona of the past and Yona as she is now with someone who once knew her confronting her again as the more empowered and more protective force that she has become.
It’s an incredibly exciting read and a fascinating reconstruction of a genre I really love. But it’s still far from perfect. For a feminist work, the fact that no permanent members of the cast are women besides Yona and that, in this volume, no speaking roles are given to anyone but Yona is pretty stunning. And there are some stilted interactions still predicated on the very tropes Yona tries to break down that feel uncomfortable at time, particularly her interactions with Hak and how “innocently sexual” Yona tends to be. I hope like many of the other story elements, these evolve as the story continues but they’re still negatives large enough to drop this volume of Yona of the Dawn from 5 to 4/5 stars.

Hello friends! That’s the end of the Roundup for this week, but fortunately if you enjoyed my takes on the comics of the week, for my Ramble reviews, or more content that I produce, I’m able to continue to do so thanks to the support and backing of my Patrons on Patreon.
As a way of thanking my patrons, I’ve opened up suggestions for future content to be covered -- comics for me to pick up on the Roundups, current comics for the Rambles, subjects for the fledgling future podcast, or more!
Patrons receive notifications about my upcoming content on this blog, but also receive updates on other upcoming projects including exclusive looks at my art.
Currently membership goes for as little as a $1 per project, but if we reach my current goal of 20 patrons I will hopefully be able to move to a $1/per month payment schedule instead.
So please, if you would like to support anything I do here, consider becoming my patron!
If that’s not a commitment that you can make but would still like to give a one time tip, I also have a KO-FI or PayPal open for donations.
Thank you all so much for the support, or at the very least for giving me a little bit of your time once a week. I appreciate you all more than you know.

Meeting the Avengers family; Chris Evans x teen reader
This request was my first ever Chris Evans request that I had ever written. I hope you guys enjoy it, not really any warnings except for utter teeth rotting fluffiness, sparks of first romance and the Three Leaders of Team Cap picking on a small Tom Holland.
Tumblr media
_________________________________________________________
It was the beginning of May and my dad Chris Evans and I have just arrived at the first location spot for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War film. Now I have been to all the premieres and heck I have all the DVD's but I've never once gotten the chance to go with my dad to see him on set as Captain America (I blame school for that) but now since I've finished my finals and am currently done with school, I have bargained with my dad to allow me to go with him on set to see Avengers: Infinity War and here we are now.
"Okay (n/n) we're here" my dad said as he patted my knee which made me take out my earbuds and shut my music off and I got out of the car with him and we were guided by some of the Marvel staff into the studio where we were welcomed by the entire cast and crew that were there.
"And there he is Captain America ready to return for one more, grand ass-kicking movie!" RDJ proclaimed as everyone applauded and my dad smiled and saluted before going in and hugging some of his cast mates.
"And I see you brought young Evans with you too huh Chris?" stated Scarlett as she came up to me and hugged me. I have known Scarlett ever since I was a little girl when she and my dad first met and for years whenever he was too busy or any other of my family members couldn't babysit me, he called up Scarlett and she became like a second mother to me.
"Hey Scarlett" I said as we hugged each other.
"Hey (n/n), ohhh girl you are getting bigger every time I see you" she said as she rocked me back and forth.
"Is that the Princess Leia to my Luke Skywalker I hear?" A huge smile grew on my face and I ran and glomped my big bro Sebastian Stan. He twirled me around the two of us laughing with each other as he squeezed me in his famous Sebastian teddy bear hugs. "Ohh how you doin doll?"
"Been better just glad to be out of school and see you all become your characters for what may seem the final time. I didn't know you were gonna be in this movie?"
"Told your dad to keep it a surprise from you".
"That's why you randomly took my phone away from me that week!" I exclaimed at my dad as he and the other Avengers laughed. Seb wrapped his arm around my shoulders and brought me in close to him and kissed the top of my head playfully while also gently giving me a noogie.
"Now then, there are some other superheroes you have yet to meet so me along with Seb and Anthony Mackie are gonna give you a little tour around the set to meet them before we get you settled in your trailer".
"For realzies?"
"For sure Lady Liberty!" I heard Mack-attacks voice. He opened his arms out for me and I went into his arms as he rocked me back and forth. "What's up Lady Liberty? You getting bigger or something? Last I saw you, you were—" he then teased me as he placed his hand on my head and measured me and then went about a foot down as he continued, "That tall?"
"Haha very funny!"
"No Chocolachino's right, when I first met you back in 2010 you were about—this big" he teased going lower than Mackie had his hand then I exclaimed out.
"Who you calling small that you wanna crush like an ant!?"
"Hey there will be no ant-crushing while I'm around!" It was then Paul Rudd came up along with one of my favorite actresses and role models Evangeline Lilly.
"Hey Rudd, Eevee" my dad said. "(Y/n), this is Evangeline Lilly and I'm sure you remember Paul Rudd" and believe me when I say I was a little star struck when I found myself standing face to face with Evangeline Lilly.
"Hi (y/n) Paul's told me a bit about you during the Ant-man and Wasp movie from when he met you during the Civil War premiere" said Evangeline.
I froze in shock and nervousness and smiled bashfully I swear my face was probably even redder than the Ironman suit.
"Aww (n/n) gone all shy now!" teased Mackie.
"Shut up" I stuttered. I then turned to Evangeline and said, "It's a real honor to finally meet you I've—I've been a fan of yours ever since I first watched you in Lost. Then when you were on the Hobbit I just—oh my god...." I looked down almost tearing up and everybody awed at me then I felt Evangeline Lilly actually hug me.
"It's always nice meeting a fan of mine. It's an honor to meet Captain America's daughter, I'm thrilled to meet you sweetie" she told me.
"You know Eevee, when we went to Wizard World last year, she actually cosplayed Tauriel and she actually made the cosplay herself. Weapons and all" my dad said.
"Really? Do you have a picture?" she asked.
"Right here, I actually got a video of it on my phone" Sebastian said. We then crowded around Seb and he opened up his phone and played back the video of me doing a testing of my handmade Tauriel daggers in full costume in my hotel room. The video first showed a door and my voice came out.
"You ready Seb?"
"Yeah I'm rolling, Anthony cue the music!" Seb's voice rang out and soon Tauriel's battle music came out and the door swung open and there I was in full costume twirling the daggers pretending to fight and intimidate any orc that came my way. My father's, Seb's and Mackie's voices all cheered out and cried out in exclamation.
"Oh my god! That is so cool!" Eevee exclaimed. "You look exactly like Tauriel! How long did it take you to make the entire cosplay?"
"Four months to make the actual cosplay itself and the weapons about a month so in total five, five and a half. I wanted to be as detailed as possible because she's my favorite character and I wanted to do you justice" I admitted bashfully.
"Well justice is served, wow (y/n) that—that is amazing! High-five badass She-elf!" I then high fived Evangeline and soon the directors called for the actors to get ready for shooting so everyone dispersed and went into their trailers to put away their stuff and get ready for the big day of shooting Avengers: Infinity War.
While heading to my trailer I accidentally bumped into someone dropping my luggage and the damn zipper broke spilling out some of my movies from my bag.
"Oh shit! I'm so sorry here let me help you with that" we both knelt down and when we looked up at each other I was staring face to face with the new Spiderman Tom Holland. Though I did see him at the premiere of Civil War I never did really get a chance to talk to him but I would be lying if I didn't admit that I had a small little crush on him.
"Thank you" I said as he handed me my Star wars: The Force awakens Blu-ray.
"So you like Star Wars too?" he asked me.
"Yeah I—I grew up with it and know every single line to the originals and this movie". I said to him shyly.
"Me too, my brothers and I loved having our Star Wars days when we were kids".
"Me too, hell my dad and I still kinds do that with my cousins whenever he's on break. I also love watching them with my big bro sometimes too".
"If you don't mind me asking, I mean I feel like I've seen you before but I can't quite put my finger on it".
"Well you might remember my father. He's the one your character shares a common New York charisma and my brother is the one who had the metal arm which you thought was awesome".
"Oh my god—you're Chris Evans' daughter?"
"Yep. (Y/n) Evans at your service". After the introductions and gathering up my spilled DVD collection to keep me entertained while my dad is filming, Tom and I went inside my trailer and the two of us just talked for hours on end until he was called to set.
For the next several weeks, I got to meet several other actors who had come in to shoot their scenes like Benedict Cumberbatch, the Guardians of the galaxy (Pratt and I hit it off and he officially claimed himself as my 'other father' since he and my dad have the same name, Hemsworth preferred to be the spoiling uncle carrying me around as Thor whenever he could), Brie was also a lot of fun to be around she became like another sister to me alongside Lizzie and Eevee Lilly.
But the one cast member I found myself bonding to the most was Tom Holland since he and I were the youngest on set that and my crush on him was really starting to blossom into something more. He and I hung out almost every day until he got to set, we worked out together, watched movies on my computer together, he shared with me some pictures and videos of his cute dog Tessa, we did almost everything together.
And of course things like this never stay quiet on set. As the Avengers and the Guardians were all at a late night dinner, RDJ brought up the topic.
"Hey have you guys noticed that lately (n/n) and Holland are spending a lot of time together".
"Robert don't you dare even go there!" warned Sebastian as he ate his dumplings.
"No need to get so defensive there Robocop all I'm asking is if anyone else has taken notice of it".
"I have and I gotta say it's kinda cute" said Scarlett.
"I agree, they do make such a cute little couple together" admitted Lizzie.
"Well I don't like it, little brat's not good enough for her!" stated Anthony.
"I conquer! No man is good enough for my daughter!" exclaimed Pratt.
"Pratt stop she's not really your daughter" stated Zoe.
"Well what do you think of it Evans? You haven't said a word on it and she is your baby girl. What do you say?" asked Paul Rudd. Chris drank his diet-coke and stated.
"My daughter hasn't really had the chance to find love, and even when she did the guys she's dated have just used her to get to me or any of us. Broke her heart over and over again. I'll be honest; even though I've never been cool with my daughter dating, I'm grateful she's found someone who seems to care for her and not just because she's the daughter of Captain America. Mackie, Stan, tomorrow we're gonna give those two a little chat".
"Way ahead of you man" stated Sebastian.
"We got your back Cap" said Mackie.
The next day, Tom actually had a break from filming and he invited me to go out for lunch. Once I had gotten dressed and I heard a knock at my trailer and when I opened it there stood Tom Holland all dressed up semi-casual and said.
"You ready (y/n)?"
"Yep now let's go before the High members of the Team Cap Protection Program finds us". We then quickly raced out of the studio and got into a van and headed downtown for lunch.
As we ate, and after a few fan encounters during lunch, I couldn't help of how my heart was racing as I looked at Tom interacting with his fans. He was such a sweetheart and a loving, dorkable guy that I wouldn't mind dating but I doubt he'd want to go anywhere else in our relationship, plus with all the guys that have used me to get to either my dad or any other member of the Avengers have left me scarred and unable to trust anyone in a serious relationship.
"Hey (y/n),"
"Yeah?"
"Mind if I take you somewhere else before we head back?"
"Uhh yeah sure, lead the way". We then paid for our lunch and our driver took us to a beautiful park and Tom lead me through it until we reached a beautiful gazebo with a beautiful lake surrounding it with water lilies, and swans swimming.
"(Y/n) I—I've really been having fun these past few weeks with you".
"Yeah I've had a really great time too Tom, thanks for making my first studio experience a wonderful one".
"No problem". We sat there in complete awkward silence for a bit before we both said.
"(Y/n) I—"
"Do you wanna head—ohhh you first".
"No, no you first".
"Tom I insist, what were you gonna say?"
"Well umm—ugh uhh (y/n). You are probably the most—no umm you are the most fun person to be around and don't get me wrong when I say I haven't enjoyed it but I was wondering if uhh—that is if you're alright with it would you uhh—consider maybe being....."
"Are you—asking me out?"
"YES! I'm sorry I didn't mean for it to sound like that but yeah...I love you (y/n) Evans. Will you be my girlfriend?" My heart sped up and my face blushed.
"I—I....."
"I know this sounds rubbish and completely cheesy but you are the most beautiful girl I've ever met and Robert did tell me before-hand that you have been used before by other guys but I promise," he took my hand in his and squeezed it to emphasize his point "I promise I will not be like those awful gits. I promise to treat you with the right respect and you never have to worry about me using you to get to the Avengers since I am technically apart of the Marvel world, what do you say (y/n) will you be the Spider-girl to my Spider-man?" Tears formed into my eyes and I let out a choked laugh but nodded and said.
"Yes! Yes!" We then leaned forward into our first kiss before embracing each other while I cried in happiness.
When we got back to the studio with me leaning against Tom's shoulder and his arm wrapped around my shoulder we stopped in shock as standing right in front of us with arms crossed over and putting on their 'Intimidating Soldier faces' were the High members of Team Cap, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie and my dad Chris Evans.
"Mr. Evans sir, I promise you we—we didn't do anything we were just uhh—"
"Quiet spider-boy!" proclaimed Mackie.
"Yes sir" Tom said submissively as he looked down.
"Dad can you please call off the Falcon and Winter Soldier there you're scaring the poor guy".
"Its okay guys I've got this" said my dad. He and I walked up towards each other and he continued "so, are you two a thing now?"
"Yes, he just told me he loves me and he loves me for me, not like all those other guys I dated back home. Besides he's already in the Marvel so he promised to never use me to get to any of you guys". He looked between Tom and I a few times before smiling and saying.
"I approve, he's a good kid and he is one of the only guys I would trust you with when I'm not around". I smiled and hugged me dad tightly and he hugged me back. "But remember this Holland, you break her heart, I won't hesitate to take my shield and really cause some harm" he warned to Tom.
"Same goes with me, you harm Lady Liberty, I'mma gonna take you for a flight without your little webbings in our next scene together" threatened Mackie. I could swear poor Tom was going to pass out but of course Sea-bass had to make everything worse. To emphasize his point, Seb took me into his arms as he said.
"This sweet little angel is the Princess Leia to my Luke Skywalker, you harm my Princess, and there will be a fate worse than being frozen in carbonite waiting for you. And I'll even get my father to double account for that since she's met him too and he loves her".
"Oh God Seb don't bring Mark into this!" I groaned out.
"Wait you mean—" Tom started out and both Seb and I nodded and it was at that moment Tom Holland fainted.
"Thanks guys, you broke my boyfriend".
"Anytime". They all answered.

It was the best of years, it was the worst of years, it was the wokest of years, it was the most problematic of years, it was the year of AI, it was the year of scooters, it was the year of Big Tech triumph, it was the year of Big Tech scandals, it was the year of Musk’s disgrace, it was the year of Tesla’s redemption, it was the year of shitcoin justice, it was definitely not the year of AR or VR, it was the dumbest timeline, it was the spring of stanning, it was the winter of wtf.
It was, in short, a year tailor-made for The Jons, an annual award celebrating tech’s more dubious achievers, named, in an awe-inspiring fit of humility, after myself. So let’s get to it! With very little further ado, I give you: the third annual Jon Awards for Dubious Technical Achievement!
(The Jons 2015) (The Jons 2016) (The Jons 2017)
THE FEET AND LEGS AND TORSO OF CLAY AWARD FOR SUDDEN REGRESSION TO THE MEAN
To Elon Musk, who in the past year went from (in many eyes) “messiah who could do no wrong” to “man who has paid a $20 million fine and stepped down as chairman in order to settle with the SEC regarding allegations of tweeted fraud; been sued for very publicly accusing a stranger of pedophilia with no evidence; feuded with Azealia Banks; been roundly criticized for the conditions in Tesla’s factories; and been pilloried (though also, and to my mind more accurately, tentatively praised) for his new Boring Tunnel.” Don’t have heroes, kids.
THE BUT ON THE OTHER HAND THERE ARE ALL THOSE SHINY NEW ELECTRIC CARS AWARD FOR ATTEMPTED DOOMSAYING
Surprisingly, despite the previous award, this one goes to the herds of bears who spent much of the year claiming that Tesla’s imminent doom and bankruptcy would become obvious and indisputable any day now. The roars of the bears seem to have grown much quieter of late, probably because the Model 3’s production rate has rocketed from 1,000 per week at the start of the year to 1,000 per day of late. No mean feat on the part of Tesla employees.
THE YES BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS THE RUSSIANS KNOW IT’S DISINFORMATION AWARD FOR BAD OPSEC
To Donald Trump, who apparently continues to use an insecure iPhone which the Chinese and Russians listen in on. The good news? Officials have “confidence he was not spilling secrets because he rarely digs into the details of the intelligence he is shown and is not well versed in the operational specifics of military or covert activities.” Put less diplomatically, the President of the United States doesn’t pay enough attention to briefings to have any important secrets to share. Nothing to worry about there! Trump responded by tweeting a denial, saying he only had a “seldom used government cell phone” … from the iOS Twitter app.
THE YOU MUST ADMIT I WAS AT LEAST RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING BEING DIFFERENT NOW AWARD FOR BUBBLY BITCOIN PREDICTIONS
It’s too easy and obvious to give this award to John McAfee, who I suspect of actually angling for a Jon year after year. And as a believer that cryptocurrencies have long-term importance, I’m not going to award anyone for their less-outlandish-than-McAfee medium-term beliefs. So this award goes to Bitcoin uberbull Tom Lee, who claimed Bitcoin would end the year at $15,000 … in the second half of November. There’s a point you almost have to admire; the point at which hype becomes delusion.
THE SURE BUT IT’S A MORE CONNECTED KIND OF MISERY, EXPLOITATION, AND DISINFORMATION AWARD FOR DESTROYING THE GLOBAL VILLAGE IN ORDER TO SAVE IT
Not to Mark Zuckerberg, actually, whose company has, in its zeal for connecting the world, and its belief that this is always and automatically a good thing, amplified genocide, provided a platform for manipulation and disinformation which may have helped tip the Brexit referendum, and 2016 presidential election (both of which were admittedly so close that there were probably dozens of aspects which “helped tip” them) and is increasingly widely viewed as a significant net negative for the world thanks to its business model of incentivizing “engagement” above all else. He’d be a worthy recipient, but this goes to Sheryl Sandberg, for epitomizing Facebook leadership’s thin-skinned tunnel vision wherein they automatically suspect anyone who criticizes Facebook of having a bad-faith ulterior motive, when she “asked Facebook’s communications staff to research George Soros’s financial interests in the wake of his high-profile attacks on tech companies.”
THE PICK A HORSE ANY HORSE BUT LOOK JUST ONE HORSE AWARD FOR OXYMORONISM IN THE FACE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
To everyone — especially journalists and media executives — who thinks that the big social-media companies are too powerful and that tech companies should exercise more control over the dissemination of public speech, and/or to everyone who says that the big social-media companies shouldn’t ever censor while being perfectly aware that they are already exercising control over the dissemination of public speech via their timeline algorithms. There are many, many copies of this particular award to go around.
(Note that there are at least two intellectually consistent approaches here: one is to be explicitly supportive of social media companies moderating speech; another is to favor non-algorithmic, non-amplifying, non-optimized-for-engagement, strict-chronological feeds)
THE COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH THE SPECTACULARLY OUT-OF-TOUCH COVEN OF CLUELESS OLD WHITE MEN AWARD FOR REMINDING US THAT SOMETIMES THE CURE IS WORSE THAN THE DISEASE
To the members of the United States Congress, both houses, for making Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai seem cuddly, friendly, wise, warm, human, plugged-in, and in-touch with the common man and woman, by comparison with their unbelievably clueless question. Who can forget “Senator, we sell ads,” and/or “Congressman, iPhone is made by a different company”?
THE STREET FINDS ITS OWN DISUSES FOR THINGS AWARD FOR BOOTLEG URBAN RENEWAL
To Lime, Bird, and the other scooter companies whose products have spent the year being thrown by the dozen into Lake Merritt in the heart of Oakland, presumably with the collective intent of turning that empty water into reclaimed land, just as downtown San Francisco is built on the carcasses of sailing ships from the 49er gold rush.
THE OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ TRONC TRONC TRONC AWARD FOR FINALLY GETTING THAT THE JOKE WAS ON THEM
To Tribune Publishing, until recently known as Tronc, for reminding us of their unbelievably terrible name when they finally — finally! — decided to abandon it in favor of something not risible. A small silver second-place award goes to Oath, the owner of TechCrunch, for thereby rising to the top of the “Worst Media Company Name” rankings.
THE SOMETIMES NOTHING IS A REAL COOL HAND AWARD FOR DOING NOTHING BECAUSE NOTHING WAS NECESSARY
To Twitter, who, when noted far-right wacko Laura Loomer handcuffed herself to Twitter’s NYC building after she was permanently banned by them for hate speech, responded by — brilliantly — doing nothing at all. They did not ask the police to remove her. They did not press charges. They ignored her completely. And Loomer went from “she will not remove the handcuffs until CEO Jack Dorsey reinstates her account” to “After several hours of complaining about the cold, Loomer eventually requested to be removed from the door.”
THE COME ON NOW DON’T BE EVIL WAS A LONG TIME AGO AWARD FOR REDEFINING GOOGLEY
To Google, obviously, for being forced to come to terms with what sure looks from the outside like a culture of pervasive sexual harassment by a massive employee walkout in the same year its plans for a new censorship-friendly China search engine leaked. Look not for the trigram in thy brother’s eye, etc.
THE CENTRAL CASTING MAD SCIENTIST AWARD FOR BRINGING US THE DYSTOPIA WE DESERVE
To He Jiankui, the self-funded doctor who apparently brought us the world’s first two human babies genetically edited via CRISPR, without letting anything like an ethics review board, a well-considered benefit/risk ratio, the pre-existence of well-established less-dangerous ways to achieve the allegedly desired result, or anything else stand in his way. But then, if he had, that wouldn’t really have captured the 2018zeitgeist, would it?
THE WHAT ARE THE NEW RUULES AWARD FOR MAKING NICOTINE MORALLY AMBIGUOUS AGAIN
To Juul, which has made a ridiculous boatload of money and more importantly made a lot of people seem very silly as they moral-panic about vaping as if it is the same as smoking, and others seem just as silly as they moral-panic about that moral panic as if vaping has been guaranteed on stone tablets to have no deleterious side effects at all. Where is the nuanced middle? Ah, let’s not kid ourselves, it’s 2018, no one cares about the nuanced middle any more. Bring on the outrage!
THE LISTEN UP YOUNG WHIPPERSNAPPER I WAS THE CEO OF A CYBERSECURITY FIRM AND THE PRESIDENT’S CYBERSECURITY ADVISOR I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW AWARD FOR NOT ACTUALLY KNOWING ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT HOW TO CYBER THE CYBER. CYBER!
To Rudy Giuliani, who really was the CEO of a cybersecurity firm (Cyber!) and really was the president’s cybersecurity advisor (Cyber! Cyber!) and yet, as shown by his bewildering yet hilarious accusations that one of his tweets was sabotaged by Twitter, does not actually understand the Internet at all. Or, we may presume, the cyber. Cyber!
THE LOOK WE’RE ONLY A $30B COMPANY HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL THESE LITTLE DETAILS AWARD FOR FORCING PEOPLE TO INTERACT WITH OTHERS NEARBY
To Ericsson, who accidentally disabled phone service for hours for tens of millions of people around the globe because it failed to renew a (presumably TLS) software certificate used by its switching services ahead of its expiry. You can get those for free and automatically these days, btw. Never mind the cyber (Cyber!) attackers; it’s malingering incompetence that will get us all in the end. Speaking of which …
THE WHO COULD POSSIBLY HAVE IMAGINED THAT SUCH A THING WOULD HAPPEN OR IF IT DID THAT WE WOULD RESPOND TO IT IN ALL THE WORST POSSIBLE WAYS AWARD FOR A REPERTOIRE OF PANICKED FLAILING INEPTITUDE WORTHY OF ARTHUR DENT
To the authorities at Gatwick university, who first shut down one of the busiest airports in Europe for almost a day and a half during the pre-Christmas rush because there were reports of drones seen over its runways; then said they couldn’t possibly shoot down those drones for fear the stray bullets might harm someone; then conceded the possibility that there were no drones at all (though it seems like there probably were); then arrested a couple who turned out to be completely innocent; then reopened the airport with no resolution but that of the installation of an expensive new anti-drone system and the discovery of a single, untraced, damaged drone. This dithering paralysis raises many terrifying questions. I have two in particular. One: the people in charge of Gatwick — again, one of Europe’s biggest and busiest airports — never done any threat modelling / scenario analysis / contingency planning at all? And two: how many minutes-rather-than-hours would this shutdown have lasted if it had happened at a major airport in, say, Texas, before the bullet-ridden carcasses of the drones in question were dragged off the runway? I guess we’ll never know. But it gives me a certain dubious pleasure to bequeath to Gatwick, an airport I have known and disliked for many years, this year’s Jon of Jons.
Congratulations, of a sort, to all the winners of the Jons! All recipients shall receive a bobblehead of myself made up as a Blue Man, as per the image on this post, which will doubtless become coveted and increasingly valuable collectibles. (And needless to say sometime next year they will become redeemable for JonCoin.) And, of course, all winners shall be remembered by posterity forevermore.
1Bobbleheads shall only be distributed if and when available and convenient. The eventual existence of said bobbleheads is not guaranteed or indeed even particularly likely. Not valid on days named after Norse or Roman gods. All rights reserved, especially those rights about which we have reservations.

It’s the Jons 2018!
