Take this article with a whole shaker of salt, because one of the teachers Rose Horowitch interviewed says that this article very much misrepresents the things she told her: The Atlantic Did Me Dirty
Ppl on the other hellsite losing their minds over this in every imaginable direction lmao
#I absolutely do not blame kids for not wanting to suffer through the classics#most of them are fucking tedious and irrelevant to their lives!#idk if they're even given any useful context for the era the authors wrote in and their lives#I sure wasn't and that made most classics even more pointlessly boring to me#frex: I HATED Jane Eyre as a 14-yr-old with zero context as to Brontë's life and very little knowledge of the era#I was only able to appreciate the book as an adult who had that context#I probably still wouldn't have liked it much if I'd had that back then#after all I was only having to read it because I'd already read The Hobbit#and was always going to resent it for not being as cool and fun as what the rest of the class got#but I maybe wouldn't have hated it every single page after her childhood friend died#and to be clear: I was a meganerd who read reference books for fun#visiting my grandparents and catching up on their National Geographics was one of my favorite things#I had more stamina for reading than anything else lmao

âĄLet's just get canon out of the way real quick.
âĄHelen is very calm and quiet
âĄHe isn't very expressive and doesn't speak much, but when he does, he's always the picture of the perfect gentleman.
âĄIf something doesn't concern him, Helen is pretty apathetic towards it. However, if it's something he cares about, Helen will be very passionate.
âĄHis parents treated him as a pet or toy, and this caused Helen to have repression issues.
âĄHe won't show emotion towards a person unless they show emotion first, then he will reciprocate. This is essential to remember as Helen's significant other; you'll have to make the first move every time.
âĄHelen's a Libra. His birthday is October 1st
âĄHelen's parents were so excited when they found out they were going to be parents. That night, Helen's mother dreamed that she had a beautiful baby girl with delicate features, the deepest blue eyes that she had ever seen, and coal black hair so fine that it looked like dark lace against the baby girl's alabaster skin. She woke up certain that she was pregnant with a baby girl that looked just like in her dream. Mrs. Otis went into labor and delivered a baby that indeed looked just like in her dream, but it was a boy. So they decided to continue on and name him Helen, and raise him as they would a little girl.
âĄThis treatment continued until he started school at six. Then his parents decided to dress him as and refer to him as a boy in order to not draw attention.
âĄHelen still suffers from body dysphoria because of this. For a long time, Helen couldn't reconcile whether he was male or female in his mind, so he existed in a chaotic state of one, the other, both and neither all at the same time. Now- after years of therapy, and a great deal of time building his trust with Reader, Helen identifies as agender preferring he/they/it pronouns and a refined but masculine aesthetic.
âĄReader is the only person allowed to call him Helen. And even she doesn't do it often, only when she's serious. He prefers Reader to call him darling, love, honey, dear, and, if he's feeling frisky, Sir đ. All others may refer to him by his surname, Otis.
âĄHelen can be quite manipulative and his intelligence is obvious
âĄWhile in "working" mode, Helen is very cautious of the scene he his creating, and presents every body as if it were a canvas to bear his work.
âĄHis fascination with blood stems from his childhood. He had always had trouble making friends, only managing one at a time and spaced distantly apart. His only childhood friend had been murdered by bullies in the park, rocks thrown at him for being friends with that "weird sissyboy kid" until one struck his temple, killing him instantly. The bullies had hurriedly buried his friend in the deep snow from the night before. Helen knew this, he had told you, because he had watched it all from his perch in a tree. After the bullies had fled, Helen had uncovered his friend and stared at his body lying in red stained snow, and the bullies later blamed Helen with his friends death. Ultimately, he had been cleared, as there had been a witness in the park.
âĄThe false accusations of murder didn't stop there, much to your displeasure.
âĄIn high school, a classmate of Helen's, one who happened to be Helen's only friend, fell from the building and died. A witness said that Helen had killed him, but no concrete evidence was found.
âĄNot to say that Helen is an angel. You know he's far from that, too.
âĄLater, the same year, as a freshman at university, Helen killed 17 people from his dorm building, and wounded 5 on Devil's Night (October 30th).
âĄHelen was found insane by the courts as a minor and received 6 years of inpatient treatment before being released back into society.
âĄHe started "his work" again three years later, and then met you two years after that.
âĄHelen smokes cigarettes (though not as much as Tim) and unwinds after "work" with music and a rum and Coke or whisky on the rocks.
âĄHelen enjoys lofi hiphop; classical music; instrumental and instrumental covers of songs; music from the early 1960's like: Frankie Valli, The Big Bopper, the Animals, and the Zombies; and indie rock like The Flaming Lips, Harvey Danger, Dinosaur Jr, and The Smashing Pumpkins.
âĄHe loves discovering new music with you, listening to playlists you make him for hours. But you're gonna listen to some of his music, too and he makes playlists for you to play according to mood.
âĄHelen's love languages are: quality time, acts of service, and words of affirmation. But the love languages he craves are: all of them except receiving gifts! Getting a gift is uncomfortable for Helen, especially if he has no gift to give back. He wants you to feel just as appreciated as you feel, if not more.
âĄHelen thought that he was completely asexual before he met you. No one he had met had ever... Moved him in that way. And he was fine with that. Why should he mourn something he'd never even wanted?
âĄAnd then he met you at an antique art showcase of pieces by and inspired by RenĂ© Magritte. (Example here: ââŒâ) After you spent hours together at the show, exchanging witty banter, and eventually, phone numbers, Helen found himself thinking about you that night, alone in bed. And then his mind wondered something it had never thought about anyone else. He wondered what you looked like naked. What your skin would feel like. How would you taste?
âĄHe frowned to himself, confused by the foreign thought for a moment before he realized that he felt sexual desire for you.
âĄIt still took him a long while of dating you before he felt comfortable enough to even kiss you in a sexual way. The two of you were practically engaged when he gave you his virginity.
âĄBonus wholesome content headcanon/drabble: Once you convinced Helen to bleach his naturally blue black hair. Not wanting to disappoint you, and telling himself that it was just hair, he consented and you happily set to work. An hour later, he emerged from the shower with a shock of platinum white hair đ±. He had to support himself with a hand on the back of the couch because his knees started shaking when he caught a glance of himself in the mirror over the fireplace. A long, thin fingered hand with a fine tremor lifted to cover his mouth. You knew without him telling you that he absolutely, 100%, no doubt, undisputedly hated it. His already porcelain skin had paled even more, now trembling chalk instead of bone China. His midnight blue eyes held a sort of flinching terror in them as they tried to look anywhere but the vicinity of the mantle mirror. You approached him gently and pulled the towel thrown around his shoulders loose and used his shoulder to balance you as you went up on tiptoe to finish drying his now shockingly white hair.
âĄYou leave Helen waiting shirtless in the living room to deal with putting his shoes and socks on and you pull on a light jacket to guard against the chill that manages to never be around when we need it during the daytime hours as you enter yours and Helen's shared bedroom. You find Helen a clean black tee shirt and pick up one of your beanies from the coatrack behind the bedroom door. This one was black with a tree frog leaping over the words Frog Leap Studios done in a typewriter font in white thread, a circle of bright blue making the frogs eye stand out.
âĄYou take the shirt and beanie to Helen and he pulls the shirt on. You feel a little sad that he's covering up, but there would be time to enjoy his body later. Helen sits on the couch so you can slip the beanie over his baby fine hair easier than going up on tiptoe to match his 6'2" lean frame. The bleach may have stolen its darkness, but it couldn't steal its softness. Helen's hair was probably the softest thing you'd ever touched.
âĄHair sufficiently covered, you and Helen get into your car and head to the only place open at the hour of 3:24 in the morning. Walmart. Your sleep schedule had never been normal and Helen didn't help you normalize it at all. In fact, if anything it had gotten worse, the two of you wrapped up in your own hyperfixations, leaned up against each other back to back, or one of you holding the other as one of you writes while the other draws.
âĄYou feel Helen's hand find your thigh and squeeze it, letting you know he's not upset with you. You reached down and covered his hand with yours, returning the squeeze and you finish out the short ride more relaxed now that you know Helen isn't mad at you. Helen follows you to the beauty section once you're inside the store. He patiently watches as you pick out boxes from 4 different companies.
âĄAn amused Helen watches you as you quibble with the four boxes. You shuffle through them, running through them over and over like a person considering their hand while playing cards.
âĄYou end up with him bending down slightly again so you can compare the dyes to his eyebrows. He thinks it's the sweetest thing that you're going through such a clear effort to fix his hair. Obviously you feel responsible for the mistake and he hates that.
âĄGently taking the boxes from your hands, he picks a random red and black one from the four you were debating between and puts the rest back on the shelf.
âĄThen Helen pulls you into his arms and holds you tight and close, burying a kiss on top of your head. You smile into his chest, breathing in the scent of paint, paint thinner, lavender shampoo, and jasmine soap. On anyone else, the paint thinner smell would have made you sick. But on Helen, it just smelled like home. You two stay in your embrace, Helen swaying slightly to a beat only he could hear. A stolen moment, a stolen dance, to help ground yourselves.
âĄHelen broke the hug after a few moments more, but kept hold of your hand. You walk to the checkout line and pay almost $10 for the dye. The price gave you a mild case of sticker shock, but you shook it off and smiled at the older cashier, who was beaming as her eyes moved between you and Helen. The two of you seemed to get that reaction from older people. That look of pure hope that more people got to experience the love that shone between you. You both thank the cashier repeatedly as Helen payed her the money needed.
"You two have a good night" she smiled at us, "the world needs more couples that look at each other the way you do. You look, at each other like you're reach others entire worlds."
"She is" Helen says softly, pulling me into a hug and a quick kiss, "She's my whole universe."
âĄYou're pretty certain that the woman's smile could not get bigger. But you didn't really want to find out, since you were starting to notice that her teeth were huge and you were starting to get squicked out by it. Helen must have picked up on your discomfort because he led you away in the protective half circle of his arm.
âĄ"My knight in shining armor" you croon at him as you walk back to the car, "Thank you for saving me. I am forever in your debt. However could I repay you, Sir?"
âĄHelen took in a sharp breath and chuckled as he slowly let it out, "I can think of a few things."
âĄ"You'll have to show me when you have the time" I teased as Helen opened your car door for me. He'd taught you that chivalry was not dead, and you'd realized that it would be easier to let Helen be a gentleman than it would be to convince him that you could open your own doors.
âĄYou drove home and locked the doors behind you. You headed straight for the bathroom and Helen borrowed a stool from the island bar to sit on so you could reach all of his head.
âĄTwenty minutes later, you threw dye covered vinyl gloves in the trash and settled an old towel around Helen's shoulders and neck to keep the dye from dripping on him. You'd clipped a pillowcase over his hair and you had just finished hitting the dye with heat to assure his hair took the dye well, absorbed it.
âĄHelen smiled contentedly up at you from his spot on the stool.
âĄYou tilted his chin up to kiss him. He kissed you back and then sent soft kisses across your cheek and jawbone, and then kissed and nipped down your neck. Helen focused his kisses back on your lips, kissing you like the kisses would magically cure everything, would keep you alive.
âĄThe timer you'd set so Helen would know when to wash the dye out of his hair went off, and Helen stood
âĄHaving already taken off his shirt, Helen unfastened his jeans and let them slide down his legs, stepping out of them as they pooled around his feet, leaving him completely nude, comfortable.
âĄinstead of getting in the shower, Helen pulled you closer to the shower and used his nimble hands to liberate you of your clothes. Before you could protest, or even decide if ypu wanted to get in, Helen had pulled you under the spray of the shower and he stood in it now, extra dye streaming in lines
âĄYou turned Helen's back to you and massaged his scalp as the water rinsed the excess dye down the drain. When the water ran clear, you massaged some of the color protect conditioner that came with the dye and Helen switched places with you, his hands never leaving your hips so he could catch you if you slipped.
âĄHelen washes your back for you and then your hair, lathering up a clean washcloth with jasmine soap and making sure not to miss a spot. Then he rubbed some lavender scented shampoo into my hair. Then he rinsed it and repeated the process before leaving some conditioner to sit in my hair.
âĄFinally Helen worked some conditioner into your hair that matched the shampoo. You help Helen rinse everything from his hair and you condition his hair with the rest of the conditioner that came with the dye.
âĄShowers with Helen always end up with him bathing you, his hands and keen eye not missing a single millimeter of your skin. Showers rarely turned sexual between the two of you, instead the two of you focused on the intimacy of showering together.
âĄAfter all the soap and hair products are rinsed from both of you, Helen turned off the water and wrapped you in warm towels, quickly drying himself off and slinging a towel around his hips.
âĄHelen obviously felt better once his hair was back to its natural inky darkness.
âĄYou could tell from the mischievous grin he wore as he escorted you to the bedroom.
AN: so I wrote on this well into the night... Fell asleep in the process a few times đ
. If you see continuity issues with the POV, let me know so I can fix it. I kept wanting to write in first person đ

âAre you absolutely sure you want to go?
Bloom sighed and winced as Stella pulled a strand of her fiery hair too hard, sharp pain from the tug settling in her temple lobe making her regret her decision to have her blonde friend help her get ready for, yet another, Eraklyon ball.
âWell it seemed like a good idea to me at the beginning⊠but judging by the number of times I have been asked that question, I am starting to think it is not such a good idea after all.â Bloom responded sarcastically.
âLook Bloom,â Stella began as she took another strand of Bloomâs hair and curled it around the curling iron, âI get it. You guys broke up on friendly terms, but no one is going to blame you if you choose not to go.â Bloom frowned and she was about to open her mouth to protest, but Stella paid her no mind as she continued to curl her hair. âItâs his engagement party at the end of the day and the one that could turn rather messy considering who the bride-to-be is.â
âI know this might seem slightly unorthodox Stell, but I honestly have no hard feelings towards Sky.â Bloom shrugged one of her shoulders. âBesides, Iâve moved on.â
Stella snorted and tried to cover the sound (not befitting of a royal) with a cough but Bloom saw right through it as she leveled her best friend with a flat look. âSorry Bloom. But youâve got to admit that the situation is slightly absurd.â
Bloom sighed, her shoulders slouching forward in a clear sign of defeat. âWell, yes, I admit that the situation might seem weird-â
âWeird?â Stella laughed. âSweetie, I hate to be the one to break this to you, but the situation ceased to be weird when you decided to spare the bastard.â Bloom saw Stella raise one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows in the mirror but an amused smile full of mirth was present on her lips. âThis right now, this is insanity at itâs finest.â
Bloom rolled her eyes. âOkay now youâre exaggerating. Besides, the two of you are getting along quite well. With the way the two of you strive to get on my nerves, Iâll even say, you get along better than him and I do.â
âOkay, thatâs just hurtful.â Stella pouted, her bottom lip sticking out and Bloom laughed at the puppy dog look her friend was giving her.
âIâm just kidding Stell.â
âI donât know Bloom. I now might have to tell your boyfriend you find him annoying.â Bloom never quite considered Stella as a snitch, but the devils dancing in blondeâs eyes reminded her that she needed to thread carefully unless she wanted to be eaten alive by the devil himself and his accomplice.
âNow, donât be twisting my words. I never said I find you or him annoyingâŠâ She stopped for a second to debate whether or not she should say the next sentence. âNo matter how true that statement might be.â She mumbled at the end.
Stella burst out laughing and hugged Bloom from behind. âThatâs ok Bloom, you annoy us too.â At the red headâs confused look, Stella continued. âBetween your constant rushing into danger without thinking and doing the exact opposite of what youâre told, itâs a miracle neither of us has a set of gray hair from worrying too much.â
Bloom felt the heat rushing to her cheeks and she lowered her head to conceal the blush that was climbing up her neck. âIâm not that bad.â
âNo, youâre not.â Bloomâs eyes met Stellaâs in the mirror. âYouâre even worse.â
âThanks a lot.â Bloom mumbled but she had to bite her lip to stifle a laugh as Stellaâs sharp elbow stabbed her in the back making her bend forward slightly.
âSpeaking of the devil, how is Valtor?â Stella asked as she started tucking delicate curls into a bun with an elaborate pattern. âI mean, you did leave him with your parents, your real parents, after all. Arenât you worried that there will be nothing left of him when you come back?â
Bloom grinned. âIâm sure heâll be fine. He knows he should stay away from the throne room when Iâm not there⊠He had to learn that the hard way though.â
âThat hard way wouldnât happen to be an angry king of Domino with a magic sword?â Stella asked through her giggles as the mental picture of an aristocratic wizard being chased across the hall by Bloomâs father popped up in her head.
âWho blabbed?â Bloom asked with genuine interest painted across her features.
Stella shrugged. âOne of the maids that has a cousin working in Solariaâs palace happened to be at the right place and at the right time.â She pinned the final curl to the right place and stepped back to admire her work. âAnd I happened to be at the right place and at the right time to hear it being passed directly from one person to another.â
âWell, arenât you lucky?â Bloom mumbled as she stood up from her chair and stretched her stiff muscles.
âYeah, I guess I am. I never had the misfortune of being chased by your dad with a sword after all.â
Stella laughed as Bloom pushed her slightly, slight grimace present on her face. âThank you for your help.â She leaned in to give Stella a hug. âIâll see you tonight?â
âOf course. Wouldnât miss the show for anything.â Stella smiled and wiggled her eyebrows.
Bloom laughed. âYou know, it is not nice to rejoice in someone else's misfortune. Dragon knows I would rather jump off the bridge than marry Diaspro.â
Stella waved her arm dismissively. âEach to itâs own. He shouldâve sucked it up and come clean right away instead of preventing you from moving on and just prolonging the misery. A bit of suffering might be good for his soul.â She stopped for a second. âThough Iâll admit, marrying Diaspro might be too cruel of a punishment, even for him.â
âWell I am certainly not going to pull a Diaspro card tonight. I just hope he will live to see himself get married. After that, he is beyond my care.â
âHoney, he was beyond your care the moment you ended things, donât pay too much attention to him.â Stella wiggled her eyebrows playfully. âValtor might get jealous if you do.â
Bloom shook her head. âHeâs not necessarily the jealous type Stell.â When Stella raised an eyebrow and her face morphed into an expression of disbelief, Bloom frowned. âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âAre you completely blind or something?â When Bloomâs face continued to show nothing but plain confusion, Stella continued. âAre you seriously telling me that you do not see the glares he is sending to other people who look at you for two seconds too long?â Bloom shook her head negative but a stunned expression tensed her facial muscles and if Stella focused, she could probably see the cogs turning in Bloomâs brain.
âIâve⊠honestly never noticed.â
Stella smirked. âIâm not sure why Iâm even surprised. The two of you separately could conquer the world, but apparently when youâre together your brain cells eat each other or something because you are stupid for anything and everything besides for each other.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âBloom, honey, if there was a picture for âcrazy in loveâ in the dictionary, it would be a picture of the two of you.â
Bloom rolled her eyes. âIâll have you know that we actually talk quite a lot.â
âIâm sure you do⊠when youâre not too busy getting lost in each otherâs eyes from across the room.â
Bloom exhaled and pinched a bridge of her nose. âOkay I think thatâs enough of that. Donât injure that fashionable brain of yours by thinking too hard about me and Valtor. Iâll see you tonight.â She gave Stella another quick hug, ignoring the âHey!â she got and opened a portal to Domino. She threw a quick âI love youâ to Stella before stepping into the portal.
Shining rays of sun almost blinded her and she had to squint her eyes as she stepped into the throne room, making the people in it stop what they were doing to greet the princess. Bloom dismissed them all with a wave of her hand and a friendly smile as she climbed the steps to greet her parents.
âYou look gorgeous honey.â Her mother said as she kept Bloom at an armâs length to examine the hairstyle. Marion brought her hand to Bloomâs face and twirled a lock of fiery strand that framed her face.
âItâs all Stella mom. But thank you.â Bloom laughed cheerfully and tucked the lock behind her ear. âHave you seen Valtor by any chance?â She ignored a dangerous growl that sounded next to her, courtesy of her father, and continued. âWe should get going soon.â
Just as Marion opened her mouth to answer, the door to the room opened and Valtor, wearing classic black pants and white shirt, strode in. Oritel jumped from his chair and Bloom saw, in her peripheral vision, how Marion gripped his forearm when Valtor came closer and started to climb the steps. He acknowledged no one as his eyes locked onto hers and Bloom got a flashback of Stella gushing about him having eyes only for her. Bloom felt the heat rushing to her head but paid it no mind as Valtorâs hands finally wrapped around her waist and he leaned down to kiss her forehead in greeting. She collapsed onto him, feeling almost boneless, her knees barely supporting her. The dragon fire connection burned pleasantly in her veins, carrying even more heat into her cheeks but Bloom was too busy basking in the euphoria that their connection provided to care. His thumb was drawing lazy patterns on her waist and Bloom had to resist the urge to giggle quite childishly. Instead she distanced herself from his embrace slightly, only now realizing they were not in private, and looked up at his face that had the beginning of a genuine smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Someone (Oritel) cleared their throat and Bloom broke eye contact with Valtor as unkind lights flashed in his eyes, his hand tightening around her waist, a clear sign of sheer annoyance on his part.
âSoâŠâ Bloom began rather awkwardly, clearing her throat as Valtor and Oritel continued to shoot each other unkind looks from across her head. âI trust the day has passed without any incidents involving swords and other sharp objects.â
âThat only happened once.â Both of them spoke at the same time, a similar grimace painted at both Oritelâs and Valtorâs face.
âAnd once was enough, thank you very much.â Bloom said as she looked between the two men, trying to suppress her laughter.
âHe started it.â Both men mumbled at once and turned an evil eye to each other.
âVery mature.â Sarcasm was dripping from every word Bloom spoke, her teeth nibbling at the bottom lip as she felt that exploding argument was about to commence and she really had no time for such shenanigans.
âIf I remember correctly, your majesty,â Valtor began, sugar coating his voice but his face frozen in a sour expression, âyou were the one that chased me with a sword, not the other way around.â
Bloom mumbled an âOh no.â and pinched Valtorâs side warningly. She squeezed her eyes together as dull pain began thumping against the walls of her skull. Her eyes met the worried but slightly amused eyes of her mother, and the queen shook her head clearly referring to the childish argument between the two grown men.
âNext time Iâm simply going to break one of the hardwood chairs against your back then.â Oritel continued with a sheer, his frame slowly molding into one ready for an attack. The men leaned towards each other dangerously, and Bloom was afraid that sooner or later lightning will shoot from their eyes.
âThere wonât be a next time. Your luck is that I chose not to defend myself, because otherwise, the outcome of that meeting wouldâve been very different.â
âWe can test that theory right now!â
âBring it!â
The two were about to rush at each other, Oritelâs hand reaching for his sword and Valtorâs hand already lit with a spell, but an explosive spell rushed between their faces and forced the two to close their eyes and turn in the opposite direction. When the searing white finally retreated from their retinas and they were able to see clearly again, they turned to the women standing on the side, Marionâs hand raised as remains of the spell still sparked at her fingertips.
âGentlemen. Please, behave.â The queenâs tone bore no traces of jest and Valtor and Oritel straightened their clothes in an effort to compose themselves, both coming to a conclusion that the continuation of a quarrel could result in serious bodily injury provided by none other than Marion.
Oritel cleared his throat and looked across Valtorâs shoulder towards the open hall. The servants were frozen in surprise, some were even huddled together as numerous whispers passed through the room. He looked towards his wife who was shaking her head in disbelief as if to say âLook at what youâve done now.â He once again cleared his throat and turned towards the people in the room. âGo back to your duties, there is nothing to see here.â The servants scattered across the room, fearing the wrath of their king, but amused chuckles still broke through some mouth.
âIf youâre quite done,â the queen began, âmaybe it would be for the best to go separate ways for today.â
âBut Marion he-â what was undoubtedly about to be another epic rant about whose fault it is was put on hold by a simple hand gesture. Marion crossed her lips in an universal âZip it.â motion and kingâs mouth snapped shut. Seeing such scene, Valtor opened his mouth to say something but a sharp elbow to his ribs made him rethink his decision. He cleared his throat and grabbed the owner of the said elbow, a girl who was red in the face and almost had steam coming from her ears, and pulled her towards himself. Bloom struggled against his hold for a second but relaxed fairly quickly when Valtor sneaked his arm across her waist.
âI agree with mom.â She looked at Valtor and the hard look she gave him indicated that there was no room for refusal. âWe should go get ready.â
As soon as the door to their room closed, Bloom snatched the shirt she was wearing over her head (weary of her hairstyle) and flopped face first onto the mattress. The dull ache in her head was turning into a full fledged migraine and she had to resist the urge to rip out all the bobby pins Stella placed into her hair. A sigh sounded somewhere next to her and a bed dipped slightly to the side due to the added weight. Bloom reached across the surface of the cool bed sheets blindly until her fingers wrapped around a gloved hand. She tugged on the hand slightly, a chuckle sounding in the room, as Valtor leaned above her to place another kiss at her forehead.
âAre you sure you want to go?â
âIf another person asks me that today, I am going to scream.â Was her muffled response as she rubbed her face into the pillow she found laying around on the bed. âIâve sat in the chair for hours, Stella practically tortured me with how much she pulled and tugged on my hair. There is no way, and I cannot stress this enough, no way in hell that I will miss Skyâs engagement ball just because Iâd rather stay in bed.â
âIf you say so.â He ran his thumb over her knuckles. âBut in that case, we should probably start getting ready.â
Bloom groaned and pressed her face harder into a pillow. âFive more minutes.â
Valtor huffed a sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a sigh but moved towards the middle of the bed, one of his arms planting in between the bed and Bloomâs head replacing her pillow, while the other arm rested at the curve of her hip, his fingers drawing patterns at the soft skin. Bloom shuffled quietly on the bed as well, her head settling at the space where his neck met his collarbone, while one of her legs settled across his stomach. The hand that was mapping out the skin of her hip trailed teasingly upwards and Bloom twitched when his fingers ghosted over her ribs.
âThat tickles.â She whispered against the skin of his neck, her lips brushing over the sensitive nerves with every letter.
âAll the more reason for me to keep doing it.â Bloom pouted and lifted herself up on her forearms, her weight supported by her arms placed at his chest. Valtor huffed jokingly when she shifted her weight and he was rewarded for it with a slight punch to his shoulder. She ignored the fake âOuch.â from his side and moved to straddle his legs. He moved to meet her halfway when she leaned down for a kiss, the movements slow and gentle but no less passionate.
âMaybe we should just stay in.â He murmured when she broke the kiss only to descend down with short pecks to his neck. His hands took hold of her hips, fingers squeezing the tender flesh harder than necessary in a fit of passion.
âMmmmm no. No. No, we donât have time for that.â She groaned when his hands reached for the clasp of her bra.
âWe can make it quick.â He huffed, annoyed and frustrated, when Bloom reached around to grab his hands and stop his movements. He fell back onto the bed as she moved up towards his face, his hands still held captive by her small fingers.
âNo, we canât.â She giggled and kissed his cheek quickly before swinging her legs off his lap and walking to her closet to pick up her dress.
âYou always have to spoil my fun, donât you?â He groaned and sat sup in bed, his fingers threading through his hair.
âDonât sulk, weâll have time to play later.â She didnât even look at him as she continued rummaging through her stuff, but a teasing note and a promise was very much present in her voice. She let out a victorious âAha!â when she found the dress. âBesides, as my partner, I want you there.â The dress was tossed carelessly across the chair as she moved to stand in front of him at the foot of the bed. âAre you telling me youâd let me go all alone?â Her voice took on a slightly higher pitch and her lower lip wobbled slightly with every word. âYouâd let someone else dance with me, put his hands on me?â She was playing a dangerous game and that was evident by the low growl that escaped from deep within his throat and by the darkening of his eyes.
She squeaked, slightly startled by the sudden movement, as his hands took a firm hold of her thighs and pulled her to him, his mouth attaching to her left hip, his sharp teeth leaving a bruised bite in the area as she wiggled in his hold, the pain from the bite sharp but not unpleasant. He soothed the tender spot by placing gentle, barely there kisses, no more than a brush of lips against the flesh. She hummed and ran her fingers through his hair, making him look up at her mischievous eyes. âYouâre jealous.â It was not a question, but a statement and he groaned as he buried his face in her stomach, his arms circling her hips, hands resting on her behind. Bloom chuckled and tapped his shoulder twice before she pushed slightly on them, a clear sign he should let go, and grabbed her dress before she retreated to the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
She emerged ten minutes later, silky turquoise dress sitting on her frame perfectly, loose curls placed behind her ear. Valtor, in the process of buttoning up his vest, stopped what he was doing and smiled at her. She mimicked his movements and stood right in front of him as her hands smoothed out wrinkles on his sleeves before straightening the collar of his shirt. No words were spoken as his large palms took hold of her delicate ones and brought them to his lips. The intimate moment was broken with the loud blaring of a cellphone and Bloom moved to answer it, Valtorâs hands letting go of her.
âHello Stella.â
âHey, where are you guys? We just landed. Are you going to be here soon?â Before Bloom even had the chance to answer either of the two questions, Stella continued. âPlease say you will, because Bloom, I cannot promise I will not do anything if I see Diaspro.â
Bloom laughed, her hands rummaging through her makeup bag in search for lipstick. âWeâll be there shortly Stell, donât worry.â
âYouâre teleporting, right?â
âMhm.â Bloom hummed absentmindedly as she continued looking for the lipstick.
âOkay, Iâll see you soon then. I love you.â
âI love you too Stell. Donât do anything stupid.â
Stella laughed. âNo promises. Ciao.â
Bloom threw her phone to the bed as she finally dug out a lipstick from a black hole that is her makeup bag. She leaned over the desk to apply it and she was about to turn around to ask Valtor if he could carry it in his pocket but gasped in surprise when two hands came up from behind and something cold was placed on her neck. Bloom bit her lip when she noticed that the cold object was a beautiful sapphire necklace, the color of the precious stone matching her eyes almost perfectly. Valtorâs hands moved from her neck, following the line of her spine, before settling on her hips. His lips ghosted over her hairline, down the line of her jaw before they settled in the junction of her neck and he placed a proper kiss there.
âYou look stunning.â He whispered in her ear, his lips barely touching the shell of her ear, but the hot breath washing over her face made the goosebumps erupt across her skin.
âThank you.â She spoke, her voice shaky, her fingers twirling the necklace resting at her sternum.
Colder breeze passed over her the very next second as he moved away from her to look at the mirror, spell words already on his lips and his appearance morphed back into perfection, not a hair out of place and no wrinkle on his clothes. He cleared his throat and turned to Bloom, who was still quite red in the face, and offered her his hand.
âShall we?â
Bloom took his hand as his other one was already busy creating a portal, she moved closer to him, one of her hands searching for a pocket in his blazer. She smiled when she found it and looked up at him with a twinkle in her eye. âWe shall, good sir.â
Valtor smirked as his free hand landed on Bloomâs left hip, his thumb tracing the bruise he left there, before the two stepped into a portal and disappeared with a flash.

MLQC Gavin - Fluff abc headcanons
So by the popular demand - I am back.
Just kidding. No one was asking.
Fandom: Mr. Love: Queen's Choice
Warnings: None (the reader is gender neutral)
Dedication: @marytheredqueen
A = Admiration (what do they absolutely adore about you?)
You need to trust me when I tell you that Gavin had indeed tried to find at least one thing he could dislike about you. Many times.
Yet your body seems to have no flaws. He checked quite a few times at this point.
Your heart is pure. Loving. Patient. Loyal.
Whenever youâre at his side⊠The world is at peace. No pain exists, nor does suffering.
You are his purpose. You are his equilibrium. Nothing matters as long as he can be by your side.
B = Body (what is their favorite part of your body?)
Your beautiful eyes.
There will never be anything more beautiful than the way they shine before your lips meet in a loving kiss.
C = Cuddling (how do they like to cuddle?)
Him on his back.
You in his arms. Laying on top of him.
Your head rests on his chest, no matter if itâs your front, side or back that presses against his muscular torso - itâs perfect.
He also likes the smell of your shampoo⊠itâs just intoxicating for him.
D = Dates (what does their ideal date with you look like?)
He likes doing things outside with you.
Attending festivals, engaging in new, interesting sports, indulging in some street food or picnics.
Heâs a sucker for long, romantic walks too, soooooo
He takes you out to the festival. Buys all kinds of yummy food for both of you to share. Wins you an enormous plushie and then carries it around for you. While holding your hand. Tightly.
Then takes you for a night stroll, to then kiss you under the sky full of stars before you turn back.
E = Emotions (how do they express emotion around you?)
He only feels like he can really express himself around you - so it will get intense. In all the best ways.
Gavin doesnât shy away with showing you his affection, even if he tends to have a slight problem with voicing it sometimes.
His expression softness, his fingers brush delicate circles on your skin.
He doesnât need to say anything. You know.
F = Family (do they want one? If they do, when?)
Oh he really, really wants a family.
Two kids⊠or maybe more.
A dog for them, maybe.
House with a big garden and a treehouse.
He wants to play and fool around with his kids. Put them to bed. Support them. Be proud of them⊠Everything his father never did.
G = Gifts (how do they feel about gift giving? What are their habits when it comes to this?)
When you want something, no matter how silly it might be - itâs yours.
Donât even make me start on what you need.
Because there are very little things (and all of them are about you) that could make him happier than seeing you happy because of what he gave you.
H = Holding Hands (when/how do they like to hold hands?)
It's not optional.
There will be hands holding whenever it's possible.
Itâs as much for your safety as it is for his comfort.Â
All these guys with eyes better donât use them to stare at you.Â
See this hand? This beautiful gem of a person is with ME.
Likes to hold your hand while snuggling on a couch. Or in bed while falling asleep.
Holding hands is like a physical projection of the bond thatâs between the two of you - and he loves it.
I = Injury (how would they act if you got hurt?)
He would blame himself. No matter what. It might be ridiculous, but he would always feel guilty for not preventing it from happening.
Wouldnât leave your side. Would help you with anything and everything.
If thereâs a concrete person or a group of people that caused your harm... Insert a very, very angry and strong bird cop with a gun.
J = Jokes (do they like to joke around with or prank you? how?)
You would have a light-hearted relationship in which he would tease you from time to time and he wouldnât be mad if you did the same to him.
However heâs not one to prank you. He would find no enjoyment in it.
K = Kisses (how do they like to kiss you?)
Gavin loves to be kissed and he loves to kiss. All over your face. All over your body.
Any kisses are game. Slow and passionate ones. Heated ones. Sweet, delicate, loving, appreciating - he loves them all as long as he can share them with you.
L = Love (how do they show you they love you?)
Acts of service - He looooves to spoil his lovely sweetheart (you) this way. Wants to bring you food, tidy up your apartment for you, brush your hair, paint your nails⊠Just ask him and he will do it. Whatever it is. And then he will do things on his own initiative, because he likes to surprise you. You smile so beautifully when he doesâŠ...
Gifts - He likes gift giving as I already mentioned in G, but itâs no indication of love to him. He just enjoys your reactions. Prefers to show his love differently.
Physical touch - His number one and you can not convince me it is not. Heâs a snuggly bear who loves kisses. You are just so soft and warm and he loves you sosososososo much. Would never want to hold this way any other. His physical affection is something reserved only for you.Â
Quality time - see Q.
Words of affirmation - Gavin is not very good with words. Not that he canât be when he wants to, but he kinda doesnât want to most of the time. Itâs uncomfortable. Heâs feeling unconfident doing so. He prefers other ways, but when he does speak up⊠Itâs the most adorable and loving thing you will ever hear in your life.
M = Memory (favorite memory together?)
It was your first 'real' date, but even though you both confessed love to each other, you weren't a âofficialâ couple yet.
At least there was no proper act of becoming a one.
You walk through the park on an evening of a chilly fall. Not many people in sight.
You just finished a lovely dinner date. Gavin even bought you a dessert to share.
And it just felt right. Everything.
The way your fingers were laced. How you both couldn't spot peeping at each other.
"Will you be my girlfriend Y/N? Please?"
He sure was pretty sure you wouldn't deny him, but he didn't expect you to throw your arms around his neck and kiss him the way you did.
"Nothing could ever make me happier than that, Gavin."
N = Nightmare (what is their worst fear?)
Heâs scared of losing you.
Either by you walking away from him after discovering that you âdeserve so much betterâ
Or by not being alert enough to protect youâŠ
Surely, he would prefer the first option, but he canât deny that both would hit him harder than anything else ever could.
O = Oddity (what is one quirk they have?)
Gavin is a little bit of an odd duck in general, but I think he has one major weirdness about him.
I would call it⊠A Keanu Reeves complex.
He doesnât like compliments. Always feels like theyâre far from true, because he always feels like heâs not enough and maybe even never will be.
Which is so far from true.
Like, Vivi, come on! Youâre so freakin perfect!
P = Pet Names (what do they like to call you?)
He usually calls you simply by your name, but the boy has his moments.
Moments when he can help but call you all sorts of the cutest names.
Little angel, starry eyes, little munchkin along with the classics like honey, babe, sweetheart, treasure and my precious.
Q = Quality Time (how do they like to spend time with you?)
How?
Often.
Intensely.
Calmly.
Comfortably.
Restlessly.
He just wants to be by your side. Any. Chance. He. Gets.
R = Rhythm (what song reminds you of them?)
Moonlight by Ariana Grande
Because Gavinâs sweet like candy, but heâs such a man...
Or A Drop In The Ocean by Ron PopeÂ
S = Secrets (how open are they with you?)
Not at all. At least at first.
He gets better with time, but you still need to ask for it. He would never just come to you to lean on your shoulder and tell you what troubles him.
T = Time (how long did it take you to get together?)
Well. A lot.
Because of what I say in X below.
He just assumes that you donât reciprocate his feelings, because he doesnât deserve it.
He eventually tells you about his feelings under your insistent questions regarding the subject.
And then? After he finally tells you?
Thatâs when it escalates quickly.
U = Upset (how do they act when youâre upset?)
At first he tries to keep it inside. Not let you see⊠But itâs pretty obvious since he doesnât talk to you. Barely throws any acknowledgment your way.
It would take quite some convincing for him to tell you whatâs wrong.
Unless itâs jealousy that is a reason behind his anger. Then he will show you just how upset he isâŠ
Not necessary in a bad way, tho...
V = Vaunt (what are they proud of? Do they like to show you off?)
Heâs very proud of you. Always.
Even when you think youâre a failure, he still recognizes how hard you work and how smart you are.
And he also prides himself for earning love of a woman as wonderful as you.
But heâs not a show off. He doesnât like to be in a center of attention. He doesnât care for compliments or recognition.
He knows how wonderful you are and thatâs all that matters to him.
W = Warrior (how do they feel about you fighting? Would they fight for you, beside you, etc?)
Well, it goes without saying.
Yes. Obviously.
This is Gavin. He does it actively throughout the whole story like itâs the only thing he knows.
X = X-Ray (how well are they able to read you?)
Heâs not an expert in emotions.
He gave MC a blood stained letter and was surprised she was troubled by that.
Okay, letâs not sugar coat it - heâs not good at it at all. I said it.
Iâm sorry. I wish it was different for you Vivi.
Y = Yes (how would they propose to you?)
I think in Gavinâs case it would be no kneeling with a ring type of thing, because he personally sees no value of that.
Of course, he would if you told him that thatâs what you want, but if you donâtâŠ
It would be a beautiful, summer evening. The both of you watching a beautiful sunset from the rooftop of a high building.
Last months you spent together were absolutely wonderful. Life with you by his side was much happier than Gavin could ever dream of⊠And the way the golden sunlight graces your skin is so, so beautiful.
It wasnât the first time the thought crossed the bird copâs mind. He caught himself thinking about it more and more often as your relationship progressed⊠And before he knew it, the words left his lips.
At first you were sure you must have misheard, so you asked him to repeat. And he did.
His beautiful eyes glimmered with so much love⊠just as much as you felt for him.Â
How could you say no to that gorgeous man that adores you so much?
And after that, expect to someday come back home to find the most beautiful and meaningful ring in the world waiting for you to wear it.
Z = Zen (what makes them feel calm?)
Gavin is a man who enjoys simple things in life.
He likes to cozy up with you on a couch on his birthday.Â
Watch a sunrise and drink cocoa with you on Christmas.
He obviously enjoys various sports, especially if he can enjoy them with you.
But what really, really makes him perfectly calm? Driving Sparky with your hands around his ways and your chest pressed against his back.
The feeling of freedom mixed the warmth of your closeness⊠how could anyone ask for more?

Favorite films discovered in 2020
Well, this year sucked. I did see some good movies though. Some even made after I was born!
Perfect Blue (dir. Satoshi Kon, 1997)
I watch a lot of thrillers and horror movies, but precious few actually unsettle me in any lasting way. This cannot be said of Perfect Blue, which gave me one of the most visceral cinematic experiences of my life. Beyond the brief flashes of bloodletting (you will never look at a screwdriver the same way again), the scariest thing about Perfect Blue might be how the protagonist has both her life and her sense of self threatened by the villains. The movieâs prescience regarding public persona is also incredibly eerie, especially in our age of social media. While anime is seen as a very niche interest (albeit one that has become more mainstream in recent years), I would highly recommend this movie to thriller fans, whether they typically watch anime or not. Itâs right up there with the best of Hitchcock or De Palma.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (dir. Sergio Leone, 1966)
Nothing is better than when an iconic movie lives up to the hype. Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, and Lee Van Cleef play off of one another perfectly. I was impressed by Wallach as Tuco in particular: his character initially seems like a one-dimensional greedy criminal, but the performance is packed with wonderful moments of humanity. Do I really need to say anything about the direction? Or about the wonderful storyline, which takes on an almost mythic feel in its grandeur? Or that soundtrack?
Die Niebelungen (both movies) (dir. Fritz Lang, 1924)
I did NOT expect to love these movies as much as I did. That they would be dazzlingly gorgeous I never doubted: the medieval world of the story is brought to vivid life through the geometrical mise en scene and detailed costuming. However, the plot itself is so, so riveting, never losing steam over the course of the four hours it takes to watch both movies. The first half is heroic fantasy; the second half involves a revenge plot of almost Shakespearean proportions. This might actually be my favorite silent Fritz Lang movie now.
Muppet Treasure Island (dir. Brian Henson, 1996)
I understand that people have different tastes and all, but how does this movie have such a mixed reception? Itâs absolutely hilarious. How could anybody get through the scene with âTHA BLACK SPOT AGGHHHHHHHâ and not declare this a masterpiece of comedy? And I risk being excommunicated from the Muppet fandom for saying it, but I like this one more than The Great Muppet Caper. Itâs probably now my second favorite Muppet movie.
Belle de Jour (dir. Luis Bunuel, 1967)
I confess Iâm not terribly fond of âbut was it real???â movies. They tend to feel gimmicky more often than not. Belle de Jour is an exception. This is about more than a repressed housewife getting her kicks working as a daytime prostitute. The film delves into victim blaming, trauma, class, and identity-- sure, this sounds academic and dry when I put it that way, but what Iâm trying to say is that these are very complicated characters and the blurring of fantasy and reality becomes thought-provoking rather than trite due to that complexity.
Secondhand Lions (dir. Tim McCanlies, 2003)
The term âfamily movieâ is often used as a synonym for âchildrenâs movie.â However, there is an important distinction: childrenâs movies only appeal to kids, while family movies retain their appeal as one grows up. Secondhand Lions is perhaps a perfect family movie, with a great deal more nuance than one might expect regarding the need for storytelling and its purpose in creating meaning for oneâs life. Itâs also amazingly cast: Haley Joel Osment is excellent as the juvenile lead, and Michael Caine and Robert Duvall steal the show as Osmentâs eccentric uncles.
The Pawnbroker (dir. Sidney Lumet, 1964)
Controversial in its day for depicting frontal nudity, The Pawnbroker shocks today for different reasons. As the top review of the film on IMDB says, weâre used to victims of great atrocities being presented as sympathetic, good people in fiction. Here, Rod Steigerâs Sol Nazerman subverts such a trope: his suffering at the hands of the Nazis has made him a hard, closed-off person, dismissive of his second wife (herself also a survivor of the Holocaust), cold to his friendly assistant, and bitter towards himself. The movie follows Nazermanâs postwar life, vividly presenting his inner pain in a way that is almost too much to bear. Gotta say, Steiger gives one of the best performances I have ever seen in a movie here: heâs so three-dimensional and complex. The emotions on his face are registered with Falconetti-level brilliance.
The Apartment (dir. Billy Wilder, 1960)
While not the most depressing Christmas movie ever, The Apartment certainly puts a good injection of cynicism into the season. I have rarely seen a movie so adept at blending comedy, romance, and satire without feeling tone-deaf. There are a lot of things to praise about The Apartment, but I want to give a special shoutout to the dialogue. âWittyâ dialogue that sounds natural is hard to come by-- so often, it just feels smart-assy and strained. Not here.
Anatomy of a Murder (dir. Otto Preminger, 1959)
Iâm not big into courtroom dramas, but Anatomy of a Murder is a big exception. Its morally ambiguous characters elevate it from being a mere âwhodunitâ (or I guess in the case of this movie, âwhydunitâ), because if thereâs something youâre not going to get with this movie, itâs a clear answer as to what happened on the night of the crime. Jimmy Stewart gives one of his least characteristic performances as the cynical lawyer, and is absolutely brilliant.Â
Oldboy (dir. Park Chan-Wook, 2003)
Oldboy reminded me a great deal of John Websterâs 17th century tragedy The Duchess of Malfi. Both are gruesome, frightening, and heartbreaking works of art, straddling the line between sensationalism and intelligence, proving the two are not mutually exclusive. Itâs both entertaining and difficult to watch. The thought of revisiting it terrifies me but I feel there is so much more to appreciate about the sheer craft on display.
Family Plot (dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1976)
Family Plot is an enjoyable comedy; you guys are just mean. I know in an ideal world, Hitchcockâs swan song would be a great thriller masterpiece in the vein of Vertigo or Psycho. Family Plot is instead a silly send-up of Hitchcockâs favorite tropes, lampooning everything from the dangerous blonde archetype (with not one but two characters) to complicated MacGuffin plots. Youâll probably demand my film buff card be revoked for my opinion, but to hell with it-- this is my favorite of Hitchcockâs post-Psycho movies.
My Best Girl (dir. Sam Taylor, 1927)
Mary Pickfordâs farewell to silent film also happens to be among her best movies. Itâs a simple, charming romantic comedy starring her future husband, Charles âBuddyâ Rogers. Pickford also gets to play an adult character here, rather than the little girl parts her public demanded she essay even well into her thirties. She and Rogers are sweet together without being diabetes-inducing, and the comedy is often laugh out loud funny. It even mocks a few tropes that anyone who watches enough old movies will recognize and probably dislike-- such as âbreak his heart to save him!!â (my personal most loathed 1920s/1930s trope).
Parasite (dir. Bong Joon-ho, 2019)
This feels like such a zeitgeist movie. Itâs about the gap between the rich and the poor, itâs ironic, itâs depressing, itâs unpredictable as hell. I donât like terms like âmodern classic,â because by its very definition, a classic can only be deemed as such after a long passage of time, but I have a good feeling Parasite will be considered one of the definitive films of the 2010s in the years to come.
Indiscreet (dir. Stanley Donen, 1958)
Indiscreet often gets criticized for not being Notorious more or less, which is a shame. Itâs not SUPPOSED to be-- itâs cinematic souffle and both Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant elevate that light material with their perfect chemistry and comedic timing. Itâs also refreshing to see a rom-com with characters over 40 as the leads-- and the movie does not try to make them seem younger or less mature, making the zany moments all the more hilarious. Itâs worth seeing for Cary Grantâs jig (picture above) alone.
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (dir. Joseph Sargent, 1974)
This movie embodies so much of what I love about 70s cinema: itâs gritty, irreverent, and hard-hitting. Itâs both hilarious and suspenseful-- I was tense all throughout the run time. I heard there was a remake and it just seems... so, so pointless when you already have this gem perfect as it is.
They All Laughed (dir. Peter Bogdonavich, 1981)
Bogdonavichâs lesser known homage to 1930s screwball comedy is also a weirdly autumnal movie. Among the last gasps of the New Hollywood movement, it is also marks the final time Audrey Hepburn would star in a theatrical release. The gentle comedy, excellent ensemble cast (John Ritter is the standout), and the mature but short-lived romance between Hepburn and Ben Gazarraâs characters make this a memorably bittersweet gem.
The Palm Beach Story (dir. Preston Sturges, 1942)
Absolutely hilarious. I was watching this with my parents in the room. My mom tends to like old movies while my dad doesnât, but both of them were laughing aloud at this one. Not much else to say about it, other than I love Joel McCrea the more movies I see him in-- though itâs weird seeing him in comedies since Iâm so used to him as a back-breaking man on the edge in The Most Dangerous Game!
Nothing Sacred (dir. William Wellman, 1937)
I tend to associate William Wellman with the pre-code era, so Iâve tried delving more into his post-code work. Nothing Sacred is easily my favorite of those films thus far, mainly for Carole Lombard but also because the story still feels pretty fresh due to the jabs it takes at celebrity worship and moral hypocrisy. For a satire, itâs still very warm towards its characters, even when theyâre misbehaving or deluding themselves, so itâs oddly a feel-good film too.
Applause (dir. Rouben Mamoulian, 1929)
I love watching early sound movies, but my inner history nerd tends to enjoy them more than the part of me that, well, craves good, well-made movies. Most early sound films are pure awkward, but thereâs always an exception and Applause is one of them. While the plotâs backstage melodrama is nothing special, the way the story is told is super sophisticated and expressive for this period of cinema history, and Helen Morgan makes the figure of the discarded burlesque queen seem truly human and tragic rather than merely sentimental.
Topaz (dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1969)
Another late Hitchcock everyone but me seems to hate. After suffering through Torn Curtain, I expected Hitchcockâs other cold war thriller was going to be dull as dishwater, but instead I found an understated espionage movie standing in stark contrast to the more popular spy movies of the period. Itâll never be top Hitchcock, of course-- still it was stylish and enjoyable, with some truly haunting moments. I think it deserves more appreciation than itâs been given.
What were your favorite cinematic discoveries in 2020?

Just Another Class Trip :) Part 6
Marinette goes on a nice peaceful trip to the pool. Me? sarcasm? how dare you sir!
First< Previous >Next
---------------------------
âDid you find what you were looking for Marinette?â Kagami asks oh so foolishly.
âKagami look into my eyes and ask me that again,â Marinette dares, her eyes red rimmed with bags underneath bigger than Chloe's luggage.
â... You found your glasses?â
âNever mind,â She sighs, finishing the rest of her coffee, âAt least that one isn't missing,â
âI thought you only wore them as M-you-know-who,â Chloe whispers, a purposeful look towards Lilaâs posse leading the way to the bus.
âJust wanted to try them out without a mask,â She brushes off easily, she needed to be able to transport back to Paris at any time after all.
âOh it was just terrible!â Lila cries, capturing the attention of everyone surrounding her.
âDid she finally hear a recording of herself?â Chloe scoffs, making Adrien shush her and Marinette crack a smile.
âThis Starling kidnapped and tortured me for information,â
If only I had
âLuckily Batman was there to save me, but I knew he would be,â Lila croons, the class fretting over her all the while, âHe was probably searching furiously the second I didnât return his call,â
âWhen did she get Batmanâs phone number?â Chloe whispers to her.
âNo idea, think sheâd give it to me?â Marinette smirks.
âOh sure I bet it's 3825968,â Chloe laughs at her own joke.
Marinette doesn't get it but Kagami starts laughing, so she moves to stand next to Adrien while they share a moment.
âAny idea?â
âNot really,â
They reach the door going through it to find Gotham in the nice peaceful state it's always been.
Just kidding, lights start flashing in their faces and everyone around them is yelling. Lila of course tries to take this opportunity to get attention. To Marinette's great delight they push right past her, and to her horror opt to shove a million microphones in her face.
âMiss Wayne were you adopted?!â
âYes but-â the cameras start flashing and the yelling increases tenfold.
âWhen?! How long ago!?!â
âA baby I guess?â She hadn't known her birth parents after all.
âHow have you stay'n out of the public's eye for so long?â
By not being like Lila for one
âMari I donât think youâre talking about the same thing,â
âYeah thanks, Iâm getting that Adrien,â
âAdrien Agreste? Are you two dating?!â
âGreat,â She ignores them, instead whispering to Adrien, âFrom now on Buttercup will be your codename,â
âCool,â He leans in to whisper in her ear, âBut I donât think thatâs helping things,â
Itâs at this point the cameras are going crazy taking a million pictures of the two whispering in each others ear, while Kagami and Chloe try to push them all back. The class follow behind just as confused. Madame Bustier is trying to reason with the crowd, trying to . They reach the curb, fighting not to be pushed onto the road by the crowd. A limousine  pulls up and for a wonderful second Marinette thinks Liam has come to save her, the wonderful manager he is. Instead Alfred steps out, surprising to say the least. He ushers her inside and tells the rest of the class the bus will be through momentarily. Marinette slides into the car right next to Bruce Wayne⊠well.
âHello again, I umâŠâ Marinette thinks back to their last meeting, âI donât think I actually told you my name,â
âNo you didnât,â Bruce chuckles, âAnd Selina has been avoiding me ever since,â
âSorry, well Iâm Marinette Dupain-Cheng Auntie Selinaâs niece,â Marinette shakes his hand, âShe didnât tell me she was engaged,â
âBruce Wayne, Selina didnât tell me she had a niece,â
âYeah, that's a bad habit isn't it?â
âIndeed,â Bruce pauses, both trying to reach for a conversation topic, âSo you like fashion?â
She had said she would design her aunts wedding dress. She should probably double check that with the groom, whoops,
âI do I already sketched out some designs,â She takes out her sketchbook which has a good thirty pages dedicated to wedding dresses, âOh you were probably going to hire a professional designer werenât you?â
âWe were considering MDC,â
â.... I think thatâll work out just fine either way,â
âHm,â Bruce looks curiously at her as she hides away her sketch book, she would be using those designs either way.
âAnyway!â She changes the topic oh so subtly, âAbout those reportersâŠâ
âTheres a certain rumour running rampant that you are a Wayne, after someone took a photo of you with my son at the airport,â Bruce explains, switching over to business mode in a heat beat, she could appreciate that, âWeâve been doing our best to contain it, butâŠâ
âAt the airportâŠâ She mutters to herself, âOh! Timâs your son, that explains Alfred, that must mean Dick is too!... work at Wayne tower, yeah very funny,â
She tries not to roll her eyes at their understatement of the century, wasn't Tim Drake a CEO there?
âImpressive, have you met Damian too?â Bruce asks, a slight smile that would have called Kagami expressive.
âNot yet, but should I invest in a bingo card?â
âMaybe so,â
They fall into silence Marinette would usually hold polite conversation but her thoughts were in turmoil. Lila didnât seem to know anything about the miraculous then again her interrogation was cut short by a certain someone . However Tikki had advised her against placing all the blame on Lila, she needed to consider other options as well. But who else could it be? she was in Gotham Hawkmoth couldn't reach her⊠unless he somehow...
âMarinette are you alright?â
Marinette startles look over at Bruce who is blurred by tears. She hadn't even realised sheâd been crying.
âI-Iâm sorry,â She hiccups trying fruitlessly to wipe away the tears, âI-it justâŠâ
âItâs ok,â Bruce rubs her back comfortingly, but boy did he choose the wrong words.
âITâS NOT OK!â Marinette yells not looking at anyone in the car, they didnât matter, nothing else mattered, she had failed and people were going to suffer for it, âI left it behind! Itâs all my fault! Now itâs GONE! Itâs been stolen and I donât know where it is!â
âWhat was stolen?â Bruce presses, getting over the shock of the polite and put together girl melting down into a puddle of sobs.
Now Iâve gone and messed up, time for a classic cover story and some half truths
âA good friend of mine gave me a very important jewellery box,â Marinette sighs, wiping the tears away and rebuilding herself, âIt was stolen shortly after arriving in Gotham and Iâve been trying to find it,â
âDo you know who stole it?â
âI thought it was one of my classmates,â Marinette frowns, they should have certainly been there by now, ïżœïżœïżœStill do honestly,â
âWhich one?â
âLila probably,â Marinette tries to keep her tone neutral, tries, âBrown hair that looks like sausages,â
Marinette could almost see the words âoh fuckâ written across his face.
âMiss Dupain-Cheng, we have arrived,â Alfred speaks up for the first time, not leaving her time to puzzle over the reaction, âYour class arrived some time ago,â
âHow did that happen?â Marinette frowns, they should have arrived ages ago.
âAlfred must have taken the scenic route,â Bruce shrugs, acting like an innocent party in all this.
âWell then I guess Iâll see you for the wedding,â Marinette tries not to rush out of the car, certain her class or rather Lila would have caused some grief by now.
âIâll make sure to send the invites to your family personally,â Bruce promises, shaking her hand before she can run off.
âAnd Iâll make sure Auntie Selina doesnât destroy them,â Marinette smiles back brightly, she can see the concern for her all over Bruce's face but doesn't have time to reassure him.
Marinette walks into the indoor pool, knowing her luck the class was already inside. They were and the owner was not happy about it.
âFirst your class was late then you waltz in here late as well?â The manager berates her.
âIâm sorry sir,â Marinette tries to seem more sincere but her tardiness falls short on the things she has to worry about now.
âThat class mate of yours came an yelled at me that one of our pools were dirty so we had to drain the whole thing,â
âLet me guess, sausage hair?â Marinette raises a bow, it really being all the energy she can put into the action.
âYes,â
âSorry sir Iâll talk with her,â Marinette promises, she slips into the changing rooms as they grumble about lazy employees.
There is absolutely no way Marinette was going to talk to Lila. She enters the changing room, a shower running somewhere. She tucks Tikki and Kaalki into her bag, Tikki had insisted she relax today, recharge and get ready to find the miraculous. She couldnât find enough will to argue not after having to wake up in the middle of the night to fight an Akuma back in Paris.
She slowly changes into a red and orange ruffled one piece swimwear. She honestly just wanted to take a nap in here, hide away from the class and the well meaning questions from her friends. Instead she drags herself towards the shower, they are all open and there's someone towards the back standing underneath the spray in their bathers.
Something fires back at her to be careful, it puts her on edge but with miraculously potentially loose in Gotham city itâs no wonder her instincts are screaming at her. Instead she steps under the spray hoping to loosen up.
She doesn't, after standing there for ten minutes she still canât relax. Maybe itâs the cold water, maybe its the other person. The were still standing there, they had been in the shower even before she entered the changing room. Marinette peaks over, they are still standing still, with their arm out⊠the same way they had been ten minutes ago.
âAre you ok?â Marinette calls, no answer, not even a twitch.
Marinette creeps over. They are standing stock still, she canât see evidence of them so much as breathing.
âHello,â Her voice echoes off the tiles, not a noise in the empty room besides from the shower running.
She is right behind them, they haven't even moved, arm still raised. She walks around to see their face. Frozen in a look of concentration, not so much as blinking with water running into their eyes. She follows their eyeline to see them peeling off dead skin from their arm, stretching towards their fingertips. There's a faint glow of yellow all around them, concentrated at their back.
Marinette steps away, walking out the showers, she closes the nearest door to find herself in the pool area. Her friends are on the other side. Kagami is dunking Adrien as Chloe waves her over. Marinette sprints over to them.
âNo running!â The life guard yells.
But that doesn't matter, all that matters is that there is someone using the bee miraculous for evil, she has to stop them before they get another Hawkmoth. They probably have the whole miracle box! She'll need the back up.
âMari-â
âCome with me,â She doesn't let them have another question helping Adrien out of the pool.
She pulls them along despite Chloe's protests, pushing them through the door.
âMari what's-â
âHush now Buttercup,â
âYou were serious?â Adrien gasps, Chloe just giggles.
âYes,â She walks over to the frozen body, âLook at this,â
âWhats-â Chloe pokes them, immediately recoiling, âThe fuck?â
âTheyâre frozen,â Kagami does the same.
âWe have to help them,â Adrien waves in front of their face, looking on in horror.
âWe have to hide them,â Chloe pokes them again, getting slapped away by Kagami.
âWe have to find the culprit,â Marinette races at the idea that this could be the Bee miraculous.
âWeâll do all three,â Kagami decides, getting their attention, âNow first let's put them in a stall so we donât alarm anyone or the villain, then we need to look for clues,"
They all nod, Marinette turns the water off. Adrien tries to move their arm to no avail.
âLooks like we have to carry them,â Adrien suggests, he and Marinette each taking an arm.
âEw, no Iâm not touching it Buttercup!â Chloe cringes away, backing up as Kagami lifts a leg off the ground.
âHas that really stuck?â Adrien asks Marinette, as Kagami sends Chloe a powerful enough death glare to get her to help.
âYou bet Buttercup,â Marinette grins, as they shuffle through the changing rooms to the toilet stalls.
âFine then, Iâm calling you Cupcake,â Adrien teases, sticking out his tongue.
âAs you wish Buttercup,â
âSomeone get the door,â Kagami commands.
âI will!â Chloe lets go of the leg, the body becoming no heavier.
They manage to fit them inside the stall without too much hassle.
âWho could have done this?â Adrien looks on sadly at the person, tilted at a slight angle to fit into the stall.
âIâve been thinking,â Marinette speaks up, âIf this is a villain it doesn't make much sense to attack a random person, and if they were trying to be stealthy they would have hidden the body,â
âThey arenât dead!â Adrien says aghast.
âExactly, why wouldnât a villain just kill them?â
âThat's very dark of you Cupcake,â Kagami says, missing Adrienâs pout, âWhatâs your theory?â
âThis is likely a new villain, one not ready to kill,â Marinette decides, not even blinking at the nickname, âThey have something against the pool, they probably want to ruin its reputation,â
âYou did say that this was a very safe pool for Gotham,â Chloe closes the stall door, âMinimal murders, so why would someone want to ruin it?â
âInsurance? Sick of their job?â Marinetteâs eyes go wide in realisation, âThe pool!â
She darts out the changing room the others close on her heels.
âNo Running!â
âWhere are we going!?â
âThe manager said they were refilling the pool,â
âWhy- oh my god,â Chloe gasps, overtaking the lot of them, âRun faster!â
They burst into another pool room, the pool noticeable empty with diving boards on the other end. They run to the edge of the pool. A frozen body wearing employee uniform frozen at the bottom the water slowly rising.
âGet them out! Get them out!â
Marinette jumps down into the pool, causing a splash, the water is up to her ankles, barely a centimeter from covering the person at the bottom. She runs over and tries to pull them up. Kagami makes a splash behind her running over to help. They drag the person, frozen in horror the yellow focused on their chest instead. The pool is far too deep to climb out of so they pass the body up to Adrien and Chloe.
âWho would do this?!â Adrien can just reach them when Marinette and Kagami lift the person over their heads.
âI heard the manager mutter about lazy employees,â Marinette gives one last push, Chloe and Adrien pull them up over the edge.
âSo we have a suspect,â Kagami says, water rising up her leg, âWe should check their office next,â
âWell, they went from no murder to yes murder in record time,â Chloe huffs, the employee safely to the side.
âItâs concerning, but they may have more of a grudge against them than the other person,â Marinette points Kagami towards the ladder to get out.
âMore evidence towards the manager,â Kagami nods, letting her up the ladder first, âWe should choose codenames if the manager is potentially familiar with us,â
âThey did have the class roster,â Marinette nods along, then grins, âYou should be Teacup!â
âFine by me,â Kagami nods, not showing how happy she truly is with the nickname.
âOh I want to be-â Chloe cuts herself off head snapping towards the door.
They hear scratching at the door, everyone tenses. Marinette crouches in a position to defend her friends. The door slowly creeps open and⊠a little snout pokes through followed by the rest of the dog.
âIs this what you wanted to see Cuppy?â A person wearing a lifeguard uniform follows in a second later.
âExcuse me is your dog named Cuppy?â Marinette plasters on a fake smile quickly pulling a nearby towel over the body.
âYes itâs a weird name I know,â
âNo! Itâs perfect! On another note could we please borrow your dog?â
âUm... sure?â
âThank you, we have to go! Careful the pool is empty!â She calls as they race out the room, the person tucked away out of sight, âCome on Cuppy!â
"NO RUNNING!"
The dog wags its tail following them out the pool area and through the changing rooms. They come to stand outside the staffroom door, dripping water on the carpet.
âEveryone ready?â Marinette asks, hand on the door, they nod and Cuppy lets out an 'off', the door slowly creaks open.
Marinette looks through to see, nothing, the hallway is desolate and dark.
âItâs safe,â
âYou call that safe?â Adrien pokes his head through the door, followed by Chloe and Kagami.
âBe brave Buttercup be brave,â With that Chloe pushes him into the corridor.
They creep along the empty hallway, footsteps echoing around them. The manager's office door could be seen at the end of the hall. Gold color plate glinting in the few stray beams of light filtering through. Marinette could feel every hair stand on end, danger seeming to lurk from every shadow in the dark hall. The pressure of something ready to pounce and immobilise them at any moment hung heavy in the air, dragging them down into a pressure that-
âHIC!â
Everyone jumps out of their skins, Adrien actually hits the ceiling, rubbing his head on the way down. Kagami draws her sword, Marinette falls into a defensive position.
âHic!â
âChloe!
âIâm sorry! Hic! Itâs not like I can help it! Hic,â
âThats it! Youâre Hiccup!â Kagami snaps, Marinette tries not to snort.
âWhat?!â Chloe screeches stamping her foot, âNo way!â
âDeal with it and lower your voices!â Marinette shouts, Cuppy barks along, âNot you too Cuppy?â
Another yip
âTraitor,â
âCupcake stop picking fights with the dog and lets move on,â Adrien implores, still rubbing his head.
Marinette rolls her eyes speed walking to the manager's office before the tension rises again. The reach outside the door, Marinette counts down to three on her fingers and they burst through the door.
Inside is silent, the bright light blinds them for a second, she shuffles in front of her friends acting as a shield, waiting for them to adjust. When she does she sees the desk chair is turned away, Cuppy pads forward Marinette doesn't grab his collar in time.
He starts licking someone's hand, Marinette creeps around the desk, waiting for the hand to snap out and grab her. The others follow, surrounding the chair preparing to come face to face with the villain. She peeks around the edge they are sitting there, she freezes the others following her lead. A beat, another one, nothing. Theyâre frozen.
âItâs not the manager,â She relaxes, patting Cuppyâs head.
She lets out a sigh, releasing all her tension.
BAM
Turning around the door is slammed shut, a striped villain standing before it. They all drop into a fighting stance watching for the stinger on their right hand. Cuppy starts wagging his tail, trying to approach the villain.
âCuppy no,â Marinette grabs his harness, bringing the Pitbull back.
âHeâs my therapy dog,â The villain growls, Cuppy wagging his tail happily.
âNot a very good one is he?â Chloe sneers, looking the villain wearing her stripes up and down with disgust.
âWait, youâre the lifeguard at the pool?â Marinette gasps, maybe she really shouldn't have run, âWhy did you-â
âI work here, you canât imagine the horrors I face every day, people are disgusting,â The villain shudders, this was the guy who stole the miracle box?
âYes, but murder?â Kagami gets a nod from Chloe and hissed at by Adrien.
âMy co workers are completely useless and the boss always yells at me,â A sinister smirk crosses their face, âOr at least they did,â
âSo you thought murder before you thought quitting ,â Adrien points out, probably not the best time to imply a villain is stupid.
âI didnât kill anyone,â
âAh yeah thanks to us!â
âShut up!â They lash out at Chloe, stinging her in a single strike.
âRun!â Marinette shouts, they all scatter.
Marinette dodges the first swipe, ducking down. They get distracted by Kagami lashing out. Marinette darts around them to get closer to the door, Kagami gets hit. Marinette reaches the door the villain comes after her, they are inches away. Adrien leaps in front of her, getting stung. With the distraction Marinette bursts out the door Cuppy on her heels.
âTraitor,â She sprints down the hall, âDid you know?â
Cuppy happily pants beside her. She can hear the villain banging around the corridor behind her and runs faster. She dodges into a room around the corner, hiding among the pool noodles. She sees the shadow pass under the door. Pause. She holds her breath intently watching the shadow, she has no one, not even Tikki. He heart beat rises, she can feel her breaths shorten, this is it, this is it, this is it, this is-
Something nuzzles her hand, she looks down to see Cuppy. He starts to lick her hand, letting her relax into it, focusing on him as the shadow continues on. With a sigh Marinette starts to take off her skirt, flipping it inside out to the cape side.
âYou aren't going to tell anyone about this are you?â Marinette asks Cuppy, right before pulling up her mask, he lets out a happy bark, âGood boy,â
She sneaks out the room, looking up and down the clear hallway. She walks the opposite way of the office. She doesn't need to see her friends paralysed, she just needs to help them, she just needs to fix her mistake.
She reaches the pool area, hiding behind a lounge chair, watching through the slats as the villain gathers everyone together. Starling sneaks closer, Cuppy on her heels. There are several civilians, locals if their calm demeanour is anything to go by, although they do seem uneasy at an unknown villain. Her class is significantly less calm.
She had told them time and again that there was no coming back in Gotham, no miraculous cure. It seems for once they had decided to listen to her. Unfortunately they did not do well under pressure. Lila of course was aggravating the situation, making empty threats. The villain reared up to silence her and man, Marinette could relate.
âI donât suppose I can wait a minute can I?â She whispers to Cuppy, he settle a paw on her knee, letting out a quiet whine, âI guess thatâs a no,â
She runs up behind the villain, signalling the civilians to be quiet. Lila looks down at her, anger flashing over her face. Starling bears her teeth right back, she can just try it. Lila ultimately decides her life is more precious than petty revenge, a hard choice for her to be sure.
Starling stands up to her full height behind the villain tapping them on the shoulder. They turn around in surprise, to find her dazzling smile. But the real thing that makes them see stars is her right hook. As the fall Starling rips the bee miraculously right out of their hair, their transformation falling. Marinette stands above them as they detransform, Pollen hiding behind her. It makes her stomach churn watching them detransform, looking up at her with fear. The twisting of her insides lessens when Cuppy nuzzles up next to her. She busies herself with hiding the miraculous away.
âItâs them!â Lila screeches, ah now she can get to that petty revenge, âThe one that kidnapped me!â
âLook what you did,â Staling bites instead, looking down at the villain.
âI had nothing to do with this!â Starling is highly entertained when Cuppy growls at Lila, actually getting her to back off.
âSure you didnât,â Starling openly rolls their eyes, grabbing the villain and hauling them up by their shirt, "Where is the rest!"
"I-I don't know what you're talking about!" She scowls, making them whimper, guess they really didn't know,
Shit
"Where did you get this?" She holds up the miraculous.
"I found it! it was just lying out on the street!"
Shit
"Did you see any others?!"
"No!" the blubber swearing by it and begging for mercy.
Shit
The police sirens can now be heard, Starling drops them and runs from the room.
âNO RUNNING!â She turns on her heel and glares down at the villain, â... sorry, itâs a reflex,â
She nods running from the room to change, grabbing her bag with Tikki and Kaalki on the way. After a small celebration at finding another miraculous and reunion with Pollen, they have to make a plan to find the other miraculous. They are cut short when sirens are heard outside. She wears the Bee miraculous under her ponytail, to keep it hidden from view.
When she is ready she goes to find her friends. They are outside talking to the police. Marinette only gets the chance to signal sheâs ok before being intercepted by officers to get her statement. When sheâs retold her account of trying to find the pool freezer she is finally allowed to check on her friends.
âHey Cupcake, glad to see you missed all the fun,â Chloe teases.
âSorry Hiccup,â Marinette looks her in the eye deadly serious grasping each shoulder, âYou were an adequate shield,â
âShut it,â Chloe pushes her away playfully.
âTeacup, Buttercup are you alright?â
âIt was nothing,â Kagami assures.
âDidnât you guys think their powers were a lot like Queen Bees?â
âYou would know Hiccup,â She nudges Chloe playfully, âIf it was I think we should keep that to ourselves, wouldn't want that information somehow getting back to Hawkmoth,â
She looks purposefully towards Lila, the others nod along.
âStill some random person now might have the miraculous,â Chloe glares down at the ground, âCan we really trust this Starling person,â
I mean no I'm operating on negative six hours of sleep, but also yes
âI donât think we have much other choice,â
âMarinette,â She freezes at that familiar, low gravelly voice.
âBatman, sir,â She adds, trying to look like someone who wasn't chased down by him yesterday, âHow can I help you?â
âI heard you knew the most about this villain,â How did she get in trouble for interrogating Lila when this is how he talks to civilians.
âNot really I just found someone paralysed and tried to find the culprit,â Marinette shrugs, hoping her friends wouldn't point out that she is lying to The Batman.
âYou didnât call the police,â
Well thats a good point, not that I would have
â... To be honest it absolutely did not occur to me,â
âThese abilities were spontaneous and now they seem to be gone,â Batman points out, damn he already knows too much, âDo you know what caused this?â
âI do not,â
âVery well,â Batman nods turning away, âGo to your class,â
âYes sir,â Marinette walks away far too quickly.
How was she going to search the city with that hunting her down?!

Does Lena have PTSD?
This excellent post from @drummergirl231-2 goes into a detailed analysis about Della and the examples showing possible PTSD. I, being who I am, wanted to look at the same for Lena. Full credit goes to them for the idea and format!
According to the DSM-5, in order for a person to be diagnosed with PTSD, they must have a certain number of symptoms from eight categories: Criteria A through H.
For a diagnosis of PTSD, someone needs: to meet Criterion A to have at least 1 symptom from Criterion B to have at least 1 symptom from Criterion C to have at least 2 symptoms from Criterion D to have at least 2 Symptoms from Criterion E to meet Criteria F, G, and H
DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional. I do NOT have a degree in anything related to psychology and simply enjoy dissecting the layers of a fictional character. If you feel you fit any of the criteria, please see a professional for a real diagnosis. This isnât something that can be easily self-diagnosed, and a professional diagnosis would open you to more opportunities for help.
Lena does and doesnât fit the criteria in general for PTSD. Sheâs certainly suffered from traumatic events, but the event is more... her entire life. Sheâs a classic child abuse victim, which makes her more of a candidate for C-PTSD.Â
Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD; also known as complex trauma disorder) is a psychological disorder that can develop in response to prolonged, repeated experience of interpersonal trauma in a context in which the individual has little or no chance of escape. Being stuck with Magica for fifteen years absolutely contributes to Lenaâs current issues. C-PTSD and PTSD share similarities, there are a distinct differences - mainly that PTSD focuses on one event and the effect it has on a person long term, while C-PTSD focuses on years of repeated trauma. However, thereâs no approved criterion yet for C-PTSD. So Iâm using the PTSD criterion with some added explanation where C-PTSD would be applicable.Â
Criterion A: The traumatic event
A person must be exposed to one or more events involving threatened or actual death, threatened or actual serious injury, or threatened or actual sexual violation in one of the following ways:
Direct involvement
Witnessing the event happen to someone else
Hearing about it happen to a loved one
Repeatedly hearing details about traumatic events, such as police officers repeatedly hearing stories of abuse
The obvious example here: Lena effectively died. Twice. Following that, she was trapped in a realm where she couldnât be seen or heard by anyone and she couldnât touch anything for six months (give or take). Her first interaction with anything since she had been trapped there was smacking the Boggle case in Friendship Hates Magic! And even sheâs surprised by that.
In addition, she spent fifteen years with Magica in her shadow, who effectively acted as an abusive parental figure. Sheâs proven to be an expert in gaslighting, and knows exactly how to manipulate Lena - by hanging the promise of freedom over her head and reminding her repeatedly that people will think sheâs a monster if they find out the truth about her.
Criterion B: Intrusive Symptoms
Expected or unexpected reoccurring, involuntary, and intrusive upsetting memories
Repeated nightmares related to the traumatic event
Some form of dissociation, such as flashbacks, where the individual truly feels the traumatic event is happening again
Strong emotional distress when exposed to internal or external triggers associated with the traumatic event
Strong bodily reactions (such as rapid heart rate) when exposed to reminders of the traumatic event.
Nightmares:Â While we canât say for absolute sure that Lena has nightmares outside of Magicaâs influence via the helmet in NOKH, the fact that no one is surprised by her nightmares does seem to imply thatâs she probably had more than sheâs letting on. Lenaâs biggest fear is turning into Magica, after all - itâs no surprise she would have dreams along that line.
Emotional distress, strong bodily reactions: These really come out in Violetâs library, when Lena gets overwhelmed and tries to hide. The fish-eye view of everyone trying to talk to her while she sees Magica over their shoulders was most likely meant to imply she was having at least the start of a panic attack.
In addition, her reaction to Webby calling her (looking like Magica) a monster was pretty extreme. Again, the dream world setting makes things a bit wobbly, but given everything we know about Lena up to this point, and the fact that she yelled at Magica for saying theyâre both monsters, it feels safe to assume sheâd be angry and upset and scared if anyone ever called her a monster (again, something Magica constantly used against her.)
Criterion C: Avoidance
An individual with PTSD will frequently avoid reminders of the traumatic event in one of the following ways:
Avoiding thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations that trigger memories of the traumatic event
Avoiding people, places, conversations, activities, objects, or situations that bring up memories of the traumatic event
Whether the nightmares were caused by Magica or not, their effect on Lena is real and pretty easy to see. She sets up an entire sleepover just so the kids can help keep her awake. Avoiding sleep to avoid nightmares is pretty extreme.
She also continues to keep secrets from everyone despite Webbyâs constant reassurances that they all care about her and donât think sheâs anything like Magica, because the alternative is having to talk about it or worse, have her fears confirmed.
Criterion D: Negative changes in thoughts and mood
The inability to remember important details of the traumatic event
Persistent and elevated negative thoughts about oneself, others, or the world
Exaggerated self-blame or blame of others for the cause or consequence of the traumatic event
Pervasive negative emotional state (anger, fear, shame, etc.)
Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
Feeling isolated or detached from others
Difficulty experiencing positive emotions
Lenaâs opinion of herself seems to be pretty low. We only get one episode to really see it, but her fear of turning into Magica and active attempts to avoid such an outcome definitely make it seem like she still considers herself âevilâ, and is trying to make up for it. She also readily gives in and says, âI am herâ, essentially giving up on herself.
The dream adventures also excellently illustrate how Lena feels âOtheredâ from everyone else - they get butterfly wings, she gets weird monster wings. She falls behind at Dewey High and is separated from the others. Sheâs the only one in Louieâs dream, aside from Louie himself, to experience any sort of physical change. Even when she tries to be happy with them, she canât keep up the facade.
And before all of this thereâs the classic example of her being jealous of Violet (under the guise of protecting Webby from being tricked again). She immediately assumes the worst of Violet and follows Webby around telling her not to trust Violet.
Criterion E: Alterations in reactivity that started or worsened after the traumatic event
Irritability or aggressive behavior
Impulsive or self-destructive behavior
Hypervigilance (feeling constantly on-guard, or like danger is lurking around every corner)
Heightened startle response
Problems with concentration
Sleep disturbances, such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless sleep
Lenaâs personality in season one was mostly that of the sarcastic, irritating cool teenager who canât be bothered. Under that, she was an unwilling slave to Magica, and while she did show irritable tendencies toward her, those can be forgiven as âMagica is terrible and provokes her.â
Season two, on the other hand, shows us a much different teenager - one who snaps easily and seems constantly frustrated by her own perceived shortcomings. Those emotions, of course, come out on the other kids (i.e. snapping at Huey and Violet). And while all of that can be attributed to her inability to sleep, which is being driven by Magica, Frankâs already said this isnât the last weâll see of Lenaâs emotoinal growth and negative feelings.
Criterion F: The above symptoms must last for more than one month.
Obviously time is relative in Ducktales. Given everything that was going on around them, we can assume sheâs been home for around a month-ish. Donald left for a month-long cruise two episodes before Lena came back, and everything after that has to have taken place within that month or it would have been way too obvious something was up. And again, Frank has said this is going to come up again. But even while she was still in the Shadow Realm, she was showing signs of trauma.
Criterion G: Distress from symptoms significantly impairs the individualâs ability to function in multiple areas of life (social, occupational, etc.).
While we havenât seen much of Lenaâs daily life, we do know a few things - before returning, she was living in Webbyâs shadow, presumably following her around and getting comfortable in her shadow-y life. Violet throws a complete monkey wrench into that comfortable life, and Lena reacts... poorly, to say the least. She initially refuses to take responsibility for the tulpas feeding off her own negative feelings, continuing to project all the reasons she hates herself onto Violet (âSheâs a spy, sheâs a second-rate me,â etc.).
In NoKH we see that the triplets arenât quite used to the fun, happy persona Lena tries to project, which immediately gets a frustrated yell and fire flaring up. Sheâs so worried about trying to be Good that her anxiety bubbles over into her life. Sheâs also constantly keeping secrets, something that is, unfortunately, normal for her, but not normal overall.
Criterion H: The symptoms are not due to substance abuse, medication side-effects, or another condition.
So the real issue comes in here - while thereâs no medication or substance abuse, there is an outside force. Most of what we see of Lenaâs symptoms are due to increasing sleep deprivation via Magicaâs brainwave helmet. By the time NoKH starts sheâs already gone at least several days without sleep, and itâs obvious the dreams are deeply affecting to her, to a point where she arranges an entire sleepover with her friends just to keep from going to sleep. Thereâs no way to know what she was dreaming about (although I have a few theories), but it almost certainly involved Magica, the main cause of her trauma. And we see how understandably upset she gets when sheâs finally face to face with Magica.
In conclusion:
Lena is a complicated character with a lot of different factors playing into who she is, but thereâs little doubt that after fifteen years of emotional/psychological abuse, two deaths, and six months trapped in what could almost be summarized as an isolation chamber, that Lena has some serious trauma. And while Magica influenced a lot of NOKH, it should also be noted that Magica, as her abuser, most likely acts as her trigger now. She spends the entire dream sequence running away from Magica, terrified to confront her. And while she has an amazing, empowering moment at the end of the episode, Iâm sure this is going to come back up again.

favorite murder tableau: if weâre talking just hannibalâs- the judge. if weâre talking Murder Bad But Kinda Pretty like in general probably the mushroom people or the totem
favorite blood spill: will imagining hannibal while he beats randall to death or The Gutting of Will Graham
whatâre some of your headcanons?: - will is good at shibari (backed up in canon: his fishing knots, the firefly manâs full body hishi karada harness) - hannibal rarely listens to modern, non-classical music but heâs a björk fan and he saw one of her chapel performances during the vespertine era and was Moved - will listens to classic rock (zeppelin, the doors, pink floyd) with some classic country (patsy, merle, johnny) and blues (billie, muddy, bessie) thrown in. heâs also a sucker for early/mid-90s college rock/alternative/grunge - will plays the piano (because of the piano in his living room) and the harmonica (because heâs country white trash); heâs kind of shit tho - hannibal fell for will somewhere between âmy thoughts are often not tastyâ and âyou wonât like me when iâm psychoanalyzedâ (love at first sight! at last sight! at ever and ever sight!!!) - willâs circumcised, hannibal isnât đ€Ș - hannibalâs a gemini!!!! adaptable, creative, intelligent, outgoing, impulsive, etc - willâs an aquarius!!!!! analytical, a loner, temperamental, unique, compassionate, etc - willâs mom was jewish go read my fic about it https://archiveofourown.org/works/26774326 - hannibal is an agender man (tbh i think of this as canon, itâs just unstated/undefined) - hannibal can speak russian, spanish, and a teensy bit of portuguese in addition to the other languages we know he speaks (lithuanian, english, french, italian, japanese) - will speaks limited amounts of french; he learned it as a kid in louisiana - ED TW will sometimes has a Difficult relationship with food due to food instability by the way of poverty as a kid and goes through periods where itâs hard to keep himself fed, but hannibal is so good for him in that way because he keeps him from going hungry đ (yes this is me projecting but also it makes SENSE) - hannibal typically bottoms but THEY DEFINITELY ARE BOTH VERS and will never stops being surprised by how much he loves catching a dick. every time is like religious experience. okay? okay - theyâre also both very kinky and switches but tbh.... will was made to Dom hannibal like thatâs the reason he exists he could drag that old bitch around by a leash and hannibal would be in heaven HANNIBAL WOULD CALL HIM SIR - the first time they have sex hannibal comes like immediately but he isnât embarrassed because heâs hannibal fucking lecter and hannibal lecter doesnât get embarrassed - i have a hc for their favorite sex positions but iâm not gonna put that here because i donât want yall calling me crazy any more than you probably already do but if you wanna know just DM me all i do is think about them fucking itâs a curse - okay no more dirty stuff abigail called hannibal âdadâ on more than one occasion and it was half-joking but it also felt comfortable to her; she never thought to call will âdadâ because heâs a weirdo and never knew her as much as he knew his idea of her - hannibal taught her to play piano at the cliff house - beverly is pansexual!!! - brian and jimmy kissed one time when they were drunk and they NEVER talk about it EVER - chiyoh is straight probably. i know, i know, everyone says sheâs a lesbian and if sheâs a lesbian to you thatâs awesome! sheâs a lesbian! but idk i just think sheâs SO fucking straight and tbh i mourn bc thatâs my wife. she could MAYBE be bicurious... - chiyoh is non-monogamous and doesnât do serious relationships, she doesnât like the idea of being tied to one person ever since she left the lecter castle - she helped hannibal and will escape after The Fall; she told hannibal she would continue to watch over him and i think she did, she got them a boat and got them the fuck out of there - MOLLY IS DOING SO MUCH BETTER WITHOUT WILL. SHEâS SO GLAD SHE GOT OUT OF THAT WHEN SHE DID. she has a good, long talk with alana and finds out all the shit about him and hannibal that will never told her (and it was a lot), gets drunk and burns all his shit, and then washes her hands of the whole thing; moves to a different state, gets a girlfriend, and never thinks about will again
okay iâm capping it there or iâm never gonna stop!! iâm not tagging anyone cuz i think everyone has done this by now lmao but if youâre a mutual who hasnât and you want to just do it and say i tagged you!! mwah!!!!

How Ted Lasso Sneakily Crafted its Empire Strikes Back Season
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains Ted Lasso spoilers through season 2 episode 8.
Perhaps youâve heard, but Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso was the subject of some dreaded Discourse recently.Â
Since the Internet is infinite and we privileged few in the media have nothing but time, a handful of features came out weeks ago essentially questioning what Ted Lasso season 2 was even all about. Many of these features were well-written, well-argued, and fair, but when filtered through Twitterâs anti-nuance machine (i.e. Twitter itself), every feature boiled down to the same reductive take: Ted Lasso season 2 doesnât have a conflict.Â
In some respects, this take was the inevitable reaction to the metanarrative surrounding Ted Lasso in the first place. Despite drawing its inspiration from a series of somewhat cynical NBC Sports Premier League commercials, the first season of Ted Lasso was all about the transformative power of kindness.Â
Or at least thatâs what we critics declared it to be. And I donât blame us. Awash in a flood of screeners about antiheroes, dystopias, and the end of the world, the simple kindness of Ted Lasso seemed revolutionary. They made a TV show about a guy who isâŠnice? They can do that? But the inherent goodness of its lead character was always Ted Lassoâs elevator pitch, not its thesis.Â
Thereâs been a darkness at the center of Ted Lasso since its very first moment, when an American man got on a flight to London in a doomed attempt to save his marriage. And, as season 2âs brilliant eighth episode rolls around, itâs become clear that that darkness is what the show has really been âaboutâ this whole time.Â
Season 2 episode 8 âMan Cityâ (the title is referring to AFC Richmondâs FA Cup match against opponent Manchester City but also stealthily reveals that this installment will be all about men and their respective traumas) is quite simply the best episode of Ted Lasso yet. It also might be the best episode of television this year. Near the episodeâs end, right before AFC Richmond plays a crucial FA Cup match against the mighty Manchester City, coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) finally comes clean with his coaching staff. Heâs been suffering from panic attacks of late. His assistant coaches hear him, accept him, and then head off to the pitch where Man City absolutely obliterates their team.
Man City destroys AFC Richmond. They annihilate them. Embarrass them. Stuff them into a locker and steal their lunch money. The final score is 4-0 but it might as well be 400-0. The coaching staff is rattled but the players are hit even harder. Richmondâs star striker and former Man City player Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) is forced to endure watching his scumbag father cheer for his hometown team from the Wembley Stadium stands at the expense of his son.Â
After the game, Jamieâs father, James (Kieran OâBrien), enters the locker room where he drunkenly accosts him for being a loser and demands that Jamie grant access to the Wembley Stadium pitch for him and his scumbag friends to run around on. When Jamie refuses, his father pushes him, so Jamie reflexively punches him right in the face. James is dragged out of the locker room by Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), leading a stunned and traumatized Jamie Tartt standing in the middle of the room, as if in a spotlight of pure pain, surrounded by teammates too afraid to even approach him. And then something amazing happensâŠ
Hereâs the dirty secret about television: thereâs a lot of it. Due to the sheer number of TV shows released each year, even the best of them are destined to become little more than memories long-term. Sometimes all you can ask from multiple episodes and seasons of television is to provide you with one moment, one line, or one warm feeling to carry with you into the future. I donât know how much Iâll remember from Ted Lasso 30-40 years from now when Iâm immobile and reclined in my floating entertainment unit, Wall-E style. But I know Iâll at least remember the moment that Roy hugs Jamie.
The great Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) â a character so disconnected from his own emotions that some fans are convinced heâs CGI â embraces the one person in the world he is least likely to embrace. As Roy and Jamie wordlessly hug, itâs hard to tell which man is more shocked by the moment. Ultimately, however, it might be Ted Lasso himself who is hit hardest. Shortly after seeing Roy play father to the younger Jamie, Ted quickly exits the locker room and calls sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) on his Apple TV+-apporved iPhone.Â
âMy father killed himself when I was 16. That happened. To me and to my mom,â Ted says, weeping.Â
And that, my friends, is what Ted Lasso is all about. Pain. And dads. But mostly pain.Â
None of us can say that Ted Lasso didnât warn us it was coming. To go back to the discourse of it all real quick â I donât blame anyone for not picking up on the direction that this show was so clearly heading in. Ted Lasso is, first and foremost, a sitcom. The beauty of sitcoms is that you welcome them into your home to watch at your own pace and your own terms. If having Ted Lasso on in the background so you can occasionally see the handsome mustache man who smiles while you fold your laundry is the way youâve chosen to engage with the show, then great! Just know that season 2 has been operating on a deeper level this whole time as well.
Letâs take things all the way back to the beginning â back to before season 2 even began. Youâve likely heard the old philosophical thought experiment âif a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?â Well Jason Sudeikisâs interviews leading up the season 2 premiere beg an equally as interesting hypothetical âhow many times can one man mention The Empire Strikes Back before someone notices??â
Sudeikis referred to Ted Lasso season 2 as the showâs âEmpire Strikes Backâ multiple times before the premiere including in his local Kansas City Star and his technically local USA Today. The show even explicitly mentions the second Star Wars film in this seasonâs first episode when Richmond general manager Higgins (Jeremy Swyft) tells Ted that his kids are watching the trilogy for the first time. Sudeikis (who co-created and produces the show) and showrunner Bill Lawrence clearly want us to take the idea that Ted Lasso season 2 is The Empire Strikes Back seriously. And why would that be?Â
Think of how ESB differs from its two Star Wars siblings in the original trilogy. This is the story that features arguably the series most iconic moment when Luke Skywalker discovers his dad is a dick on a literal universal level. It also has the only unambiguously downer ending of any original trilogy Star Wars film. Luke is thoroughly defeated in this installment. Having oneâs hand chopped off by their father and barely escaping with their life is definitely the Star Wars version of a 4-0 defeat.Â
The Empire Strikes Back can safely be boiled down into two concepts:Â
Dads are complicated.
Everything sucks.
When viewed through those two conceptual prisms, so much of Ted Lasso season 2 begins to make more sense.
Episode 1 opens with the death of a dog and then leads into a classic Ted Lasso speech that could serve as this seasonâs mission statemetn. After recounting the story of how he cared for his sick neighborâs dog, Ted concludes with: âItâs funny to think about the things in your life that can make you cry knowing that they existed then become the same thing that can make you cry knowing that theyâre now gone. Those things come into our lives to help us get from one place to a better one.â
Things likeâŠa father who you didnât have nearly enough time with? Following episode 1 (and following just about every episode this season), Bill Lawrence took to Twitter to assuage viewersâ fears about a lack of central conflict this season. He had this to say about Tedâs big speech.
Look, Merrill. It was thought out, but the speech he gives after (Written by Jason himself â I loved it) is the core of the season, but we knew some people might bum out.
â Bill Lawrence (@VDOOZER) July 27, 2021
Sorry, truly. Tedâs speech after (which I love, but am obviously biased) is a big part of the season. But it sounds like you had a crappy thing happen recently.
â Bill Lawrence (@VDOOZER) July 28, 2021
Itâs not. But Tedâs speech has big relevance. Stick around!
â Bill Lawrence (@VDOOZER) July 26, 2021
He also had this to say about dads.
Effin Dads, man. Love mine so, but heâs struggling a bit.
â Bill Lawrence (@VDOOZER) July 27, 2021
âEffin dadsâ and our complicated relationships with them are all over Ted Lasso season 2. In the very next episode, Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) tells Ted âYou know, my father says that every time youâre on TV, heâs very happy that Iâm here. That Iâm in safe hands with you.â
Ted smiles at this bit of info but not as warmly as you might expect. Because to Ted, a dad isnât a reassuring presence but rather someone you love who will just leave when you need him the most. Thatâs why heâs been trying to be the perfect father figure this whole time. Thatâs why he did something as extreme as leaving his family behind in Kansas while he heads off to London. If giving his wife space was the only way to preserve the family and remain a good dad, then he was going to give her a whole ocean of space.
Moreover, Ted hasnât just been trying to serve as a father figure to his son this whole time but to everyone else as well. Samâs comment to Ted reminds him that not everyone has a good dad, which encourages him to bring Jamie into the fold in the first place.
As time goes on, however, the stress of being the consummate father to everyone in his orbit begins to wear on Ted. Throughout the entirety of this season, Ted Lasso appears to be trying to be Ted Lasso just a bit too hard. His energy levels are too high. His jokes go on too long. The same life lessons that worked last year arenât working this year. AFC Richmond opens with an embarrassing streak of draws before Jamieâs immense talents set things straight.
It all culminates in this seasonâs sixth episode when Ted has his second panic attack in as many years. This time itïżœïżœs in public during an important game. The experience sends Ted running through the concourse of the stadium until he somehow ends up in the dark on Dr. Fieldstoneâs couch, instinctively, like a wounded animal.Â
Itâs certainly no coincidence that this panic attack occurs on the same day that Ted received a call from his sonâs school asking him to pick him up, not realizing that heâs an ocean away. In that moment, Ted canât help but remember what itâs like to be left behind by his own father and subconsciously wonder if heâs doing the same.Â
Though the shallow waters of Ted Lasso season 2 may have appeared consequence free for half its run, beneath the surface was a tidal wave of conflict. Just because the conflict wasnât taking place between a happy-go-lucky football coach and a villainous owner doesnât mean it wasnât there.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is terrible at meeting deadlines but great at writing. According to him (and William Faulkner, from whom he borrows the quote), the only conflict worth writing about is that of the human heart with itself. Thatâs something that The Empire Strikes Back understood. And itâs something that Ted Lasso season 2 does as well.

Melanie Martinez Should Never Change Her Brand
So if you donât know Melanie Martinez, sheâs a singer/song writer who really launch into the mainstream after her 2012 appearance on The Voice. She didnât win, the good ones never do, but she did catch many peopleâs attention with her interesting look. Her hair is split right down the middle with one half bleached and one half black, she wore very preppy clothes, and topped the look off with a giant bow.Â
Fast forward 7 years later and she has solidified her brand. Sheâs Cry Baby, a kid at heart with morbid ways of expressing herself. She traded in her preppy attire for what I would describe as puffy, frilly, and pink. Majority of her songs focus on some element of childhood, and she uses this as a lens to express her feelings in her adult life. Nothing better represents Martinezâs brand than her most recent album, K-12.
So the premise of K-12 is Martinez going through each grade level of school starting with kindergarten all the way to senior year of high school. Each song focuses on some element of school life starting with the first song titled Wheels on The Bus. I can only give my personal interpretation for all of these songs, but I'm sure it wonât be too far off from the general consensus. This song is a play on the classic nursery rhyme of the same name and itâs about children being left up to their own devices when the adults arenât paying attention. This song is very upbeat and lighthearted vocally and instrumentally, but lyrically itâs a bit more mischievous (couldnât think of the right word so that will have to do). With lyrics like âNow, I'ma light it up and pass it Puffâ puff and pass it Don't be a dick and babysit, c'mon, just pass it over hereâ it reminds me of the side of growing up that the parents like to imagine doesnât happen. The part where you get high with your friends in the school bathroom, or hookup with the kid who sits next to you just because heâs kinda cute. It happens all the time, but parents like to pretend their child is the exception. They are not. 7.8 out of 10.
Class Fight is up next. The song is about two girls fighting over the affections of some boy. There is a common theme that pops up in some of Melanieâs songs, and that is that her parents are awful. This song is no different. During this fight her dad is encouraging a hesitant Martinez to âgo for the throatâ. I canât relate to this song in particular but Iâm sure someone somewhere can. Itâs less than three minutes long but itâs way too repetitive for me, in fact I just looked it up and the phrase âfor the throatâ came up 38 times. This song is usually one I skip. 6.5 out of 10.
Her next song is titled The Principal and its about a power hungry man who does not care about those he was suppose to protect. In the song she talks a bit about the state of the US with the opioid epidemic and the constant school shootings in the line âKilling kids all day and night, prescription pills and online fightsâ. In hindsight I should have already known this, but the song is about our president Donald Middle Name That Iâm Forgetting Trump. This song was in my top 3 on the album before I even knew it was about Trump, and now I hear it from a different perspective. Sheâs frustrated and truly angry with this man, and she feels left behind. The post-chorus is just Martinez calling out asking whereâs the principal. I never got that part before but now I have a whole new appreciation for this song. 8.2 out of 10.
Show and Tell is the next song and it has the interesting beat. It feels like a slow grandfather clock ticking. While I'm at it I might as well mention that I love the little effects she adds in backgrounds of her songs, like dogs growling, or kids cheering, itâs a nice touch. Okay back to Show and Tell. This song focuses on Martinez struggle with the constant spotlight that is on her, and how the paparazzi can make her feel like an object that is meant to be observed and toyed with. I love the beat on this song, it makes me feel like something is creeping up on me, I always expect some kind of beat drop but it never really comes. 7.9 out of 10.
Nurseâs Office  is the one song off the album that perfectly describes what my middle school experience was like. In the song Martinez wants to avoid the hell that is school by faking an illness and getting sent to the nurseâs office. It reminds me of all those uncomfortable years we all went through growing up. I remember faking a stomachache and going to the nurseâs office during gym class just to sit alone on a mat for 40 minutes and scroll through my phone. The feeling is real and this song captures it. This song sounds the way Alice and Wonderland looks and feels, there is no better way to describe it than that but hopefully when you listen to it youâll know what I mean. 8.8 out of 10.
Do you remember all the bullshit you had to pretend to care about in middle school? Like when Stacy told Erica that Bethany wasnât her friend anymore and omg how dare she do that? Or when someone makes fun of your socks for being too colorful, or calls you an attention whore for dying your hair red?  Thatâs what Drama Club is about, itâs about how words get misconstrued, things get blown up out of proportion, and if you donât follow the script of life perfectly you asking for drama. Drama in middle school felt like the end of the world especially because half the time you couldnât tell what even started it. It was tiring, it was senseless, it was frustrating, and I hate to admit but it was painful, and all on that comes through in the vocals. Thank fucking god  we outgrow that all that stuff. 8 out of 10.
Strawberry Shortcake talks about the pressure many girls feel when they are growing into their bodies. People stare, comment, compare, judge, grab, and hurt young girls all the time and blame them for being too tempting. I heard it from my own mother all the time growing up, she told me going out in cutoff shorts is why men will take advantage of me. In the lines âIt's my fault, it's my fault 'cause I put icing on top Now, the boys want a taste of the strawberry shortcake That's my bad, that's my bad, no one told them not to grabâ Melanie takes on an apologetic tone when talking about her own body. It is only towards the end of the song when she takes on a more confident tone and claims her body for her self. 8.1 out of 10.
The 8th song on the album is a short little song titled Lunchbox Friends. The songâs about fake/temporary friends that only want you around when itâs convenient. I love the chorus in this one because her voice was altered to be a lower and slightly distorted pitch. Thereâs not much to say about this song but it is remarkable high on my ranking for this album, 8.6 out of 10.
Orange Juice covers the very serious topic of eating disorders and uses orange juice as a metaphor for bulimia. The vocals are very soothing and the instrumentals relaxing. The song is gentle, and the lyrics are of Martinez trying to comfort a friend that is currently suffering from an eating disorder. Itâs a powerful song without needing all the force or heavy beats from a traditional empowerment song. 8.5 out of 10.Â
Detention is the one song off the album I always skip. The beat is almost tropical and the lyrics donât have as focused of a message as the rest of the songs. Itâs similar to Show and Tell in messaging,  itâs about dealing with fame and having to be on your best behavior to satisfy other people. But itâs always been the song I could do without. 5 out of 10.
Teacherâs Pet on the other hand is a song I have never skipped when it came up on shuffle. The songâs about a student-teacher affair, and how the student has to grapple with the fact that the relationship is wrong on paper but hiding the relationship makes her feel like a dirty secret. Melanieâs voice is sultry and the beat lurking and intimidating. This song doesnât hit close to home for a lot of people but it does a great job placing you in the students shoes. 9 out of 10
High School Sweethearts is not only my absolute favorite song off the album but itâs one of my favorite songs ever. The beat and vocals starts very slow and romantic until they pick up pace as the song goes on and it becomes more more bouncy. Melanie is asking her sweetheart to treat her right in her own special and dark way. One line that sums this up best is âStep six If you can't put in work, I don't know what you think this fucking is Step seven, this one goes to eleven If you cheat, you will die, dieâ. Itâs a fun song, itâs a sweet song (kinda), and Iâm obsessed with it. 9.99 out of 10.Â
We made it. The final song is call Recess. The song reminds me of what would play at end of a movie after the happy ending and when the credits are rolling. The song is about prioritizing yourself and your happiness and not letting others take advantage of you. Itâs the perfect ending to the album and itâs a neat little song. 8 out of 10.

Lists âN Stuff: 00s Heavyweights
Lists âN Stuff: 00s Heavyweights
Iâve been watching a lot of boxing. A lot. Too much even. Originally it started out of my desire to catch up on fights I had missed after I dipped out on boxing in the late 90s before getting back into the sport around 2007 or so. It eventually delved into a deep dive on what basically amounts to the last 20-30 years in combat sports. Given my love of things like lists, I figured Iâd do one. Doing a list for the HWs in the 90s was genuinely a lot of fun because it meant re-watching a bevy of classic fights with classic characters. Doing one for 2000 to 2009? Well....Well ya know. Inarguably  the worst division in all of boxing for its entire run of the 2000s, this was not easy BUT by the grace of God and plenty of rumchata, I survived. Here we go!Â
Honorable Mention:
John Ruiz- I was not going to put John Ruiz on this list. Even as a Puerto Rican, I couldn't go that far. Ruiz's trilogy with Evander Holyfield are among some of the worst fights ever and he was styled on by natural light heavyweight Roy Jones Jr where the only competitive fight that night was Norman Stone fighting with whoever was refereeing. He did beat Andrew Golota (and I think that was a fair call), he lost to James Toney, lost to Ruslan Chagaev and honestly probably got jobbed vs Nikolai Valuev. Ruiz deserves a lot of credit for doing the best with what he had but consider that he fought in TEN straight title fights by the big four and only finished one of them and went 5-4-1 with a ton of split decisions in there and tell me he deserves a spot on this list.
Evander Holyfield- The 2000s were arguably most sad in the HW division because Evander Holyfield was still fighting for titles well into his 40s. Holyfield went 6-6-1 in the 2000s with a trilogy with John Ruiz, wins over dudes like Fres Oquendo and Vinny Madalone and losses to James Toney, Nikolai Valuev (in a fight I thought he won), Larry Donald, Chris Byrd and Sultan Ibragimov. Holyfield was just sort of there in the 2000s with nobody ever really letting him go away because he was one of the divisions few remaining stars. It's not pretty. Â
Jameel McCline- It kind of gets lost because of how bleh he was but McCline was a pretty solid HW during the 2000s. He was pretty much the epitome of a big dude journeyman tough guy spoiler. He gave tough guys to Sam Peter, Chris Byrd, Calvin Brock and John Ruiz when he was a bit more focused of a fighter plus has wins over Shannon Briggs and Michael Grant. If two fights had gone his way (the Peter fight could've been stopped on Earth 2 and I thought he beat Byrd) then maybe McCline sneaks on this list.
Nikolai Valuev- Some guys are too big to fail but Nikolai Valuev was too big to succeed. Â His natural size limited how good he could be and unfortunately for Valuev, he was a boxing gimmick from start to finish. Valuev struggled endlessly whenever he got a step up in competition and seemed to always wind up on the right end of a close decision. Boxing's funny like that. The Valuev end came against Ruslan Chagaev but he managed to win another title and eventually fight David Haye in the crowning ceremony of the Hayemaker as a HW.
Oleg Maskaev- Fullest credit to Maskaev who started out the 2000s with a 2-3 record and went on a killer run to eventually find himself set up with a fight vs Hasim Rahman. Losing throughout the entire fight, Maskaev ralled in the 12th round and stopped Rahman to become a champ 10 years after the start of his career.
1- Wladimir Klitschko Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 22-2 Record in title fights- 17-2 Record against other fighters on the list- 6-1
"Wladimir Klitschko looks so good, you wonder what's wrong with him." That's the line Larry Merchant uttered prior to Klitschko's fight vs Corrie Sanders. It was the same fight where Merchant pretty much washed his hands of Klitschko after Corrie Sanders wiped the floor with him and exposed Wlad's questionable chin and recovery chops. Turned out all Wlad needed was Emmanuel Steward to basically rebuild him from the ground up, focus on protecting his chin and using one of the HW division's best jabs ever to keep scared opponents at bay and set up a perfect right hand. Wladimir Klitschko is unfortunately a victim of the times and of a style that led to a lot of stinky fights with barely satisfying conclusions. It's unfortunate because I truly believe regardless of era, Wladimir Klitschko has the skills to be top 10 quality in any time period. The Steward led Klitschko was just a perfect boxing machine and very few guys had the chops to sort of get through that. In the 2000s, Wlad beat and fought everyone and the only guy on this list to beat him was Brewster in a fight where Lamon just basically refused to go away. Wladimir has over Ibragimov, Chagaev, Peter, Byrd twice and Brewster in a rematch. I don't think he would've beaten Lennox Lewis but he would've probably wiped the floor with anybody else on this list and that includes Vitali if only because Vitali was in various stages of broken for most of the early 2000s and once they reached the end of the decade, Wlad's athleticism was so much far beyond anybody else in this division. You don't have to like it (and I don't blame you if ya don't!) but Wlad's one of the greatest HWs ever and the best of the 2000s.
2- Vitali Klitschko Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 12-2 Record in title fights- 6-2 Record against other fighters on the list- 1-2
I'm totally fine if you have Lennox Lewis OVER Vitali Klitschko in your top 10 rankings. It's a justifiable and fair enough argument to be clear. I'm putting Vitali over Lennox because even with a little under four year long break, Vitali fought more and in a way Vitali fought the best of both worlds. He fought the dying days of the late 90s HW explosion and then came back and fought at the end of the Klitschko legacy era. Vitali's wins are actually not that impressive in theory as Sam Peter is not as highly regarded as I would have him and his second best win after that is either crude South African banger Corrie Sanders or then undefeated HW Chris Arreola. Guys like Danny Williams, Vaughan Bean, Ross Purrity, Orlin Norris and Larry Donald are good wins to have but any credible top 10 HW for his era should handle those guys well. Vitali Klitschko's resume might've looked even better had he stuck around for those three years and either gotten his Lewis rematch (which I truly believe he would've lost) or just beaten up on the John Ruiz, James Toney, Hasim Rahman and Andrew Golota's of the world. He's my #2 HW of the 00s.
3- Lennox Lewis Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 6-1 Record in title fights- 6-1 Record against other fighters on the list- 2-1
The ONLY reason Lennox Lewis is SO low on this list is because he wasn't around for much of it. Lewis retired in 2003 after a controversial fight against Vitali Klitschko and....I honestly think the Klitschko fight is really overblown to the legacy of Lennox Lewis. It's often hyped up as Lewis retiring after a really tough fight because he knew he couldn't beat Vitali or what have you but in truth, Lewis was well on his way to stopping Vitali anyways before the cuts. Furthermore Lewis was fat and happy and had pretty much retired before the fight even began anyways. The only thing that stopped Lennox from pretty much wiping out the rest of the HW division for much of the 2000s was that Lewis made his money and didn't want to have some B-Hop esque run where he beat up on limited competition well into his 40s. Lewis' 2000s run features Frans Botha, the corpse of Mike Tyson, Vitali and David Tua. An argument can be made that if Lewis doesn't get smelted by Rahman (a win he'd eventually get back), he could be arguably one of the top 3 heavyweights ever.
4- Chris Byrd Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 11-4-1 Record in title fights- 5-2-1 Record against other fighters on the list- 1-2
The general argument I have (or feel I have) is that once you get outside the top 3 HWs, you're sort of open to interpret the top of the HW division however you so wish. Chris Byrd is my #4 HW if only because of his ability to stick around as a slickster boxer who managed to win fights at HW despite having absolutely zero pop in his hands. Hell if anything Bird should be this high just because of how lucky he was (theoretically) throughout his career. He survived close calls against Andrew Golota and Jameel McCline, he managed to not suffer a knockdown at any point in a 12 round fight against eternally hard puncher David Tua, he was getting wiped out on the cards vs Vitali Klitschko and then won the belt because Vitali tore his shoulder. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good although Chris Byrd was arguably both of those at the same time. Chris Byrd ended the 90s getting smelted by Ike Ibeabuchi and then once the decade turns to the double zeros, Byrd went 8-1-1 with wins over Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield, Jameel McCline, Fres Oquendo and DaVaryll Williamson. His losses in the 2000s were to Wladimir Klitschko twice, Alexander Povetkin and Shaun George at the very end of Byrd's run. He's my #4 HW.
5- Sam Peter Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 33-3 Record in title fights- 5-2 Record against other fighters on the list- 2-2
Sam Peter is actually a pretty damn cool success story. While he became a meme on boxing sites, Peter went from being a poor kid growing up in Nigeria to a HW champ of the world despite his many limitations. Maybe Peter was just a beneficiary of a vacantly empty heavyweight division but that's also unfair to him given the work he put in to even get to that point. Peter fought both Klitschko brothers, James Toney twice, the underrated Jameel McCline and veteran HW Oleg Maskaev and racked up a 4-2 record throughout that time. Peter wasn't the most talented dude but he was tough, gritty and hit really damn hard. Â Two of his losses during this era were to the Klitschkos so that accounts for something. WHONEX indeed.
6- Lamon Brewster Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 13-4 Record in title fights- 4-2 Record against other fighters on the list- 1-1
Maybe it's not a great sign for the HW division that Lamon Brewster is up this high. Actually I think it's fair to wonder how good Lamon Brewster could've been had he not suffered a torn retinae against Sergei Liakhovich in one of his last real "big" fights. Brewster wasn't the most naturally gifted boxer but he hit really hard, had enough cardio to go hard in fights and was the sort of dude who could get anybody out early. Until Tyson Fury's masterclass, the last guy to beat Wladimir Klitschko was Lamon Brewster in a rock 'em sock 'em sort of fight where he was getting beat up early and then rallied to drop Wladimir en route to a stoppage victory. Brewster hurt his eye really badly against Sergei Liakhovich and was never the same afterwards, basically ending his relevancy before he had even hit his mid 30s. The Liakhovich fight by the way is one of the gnarlier HW fights you'll see and sort of gets lost in the shuffle given how dismal the division was during this time period.
7- James Toney Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 13-2-1 Record in title fights- 1-0-1 (1) Record against other fighters on the list- 0-2-1 (1)
Let's be fair now. James Toney doesn't belong on this list because he probably should've never been a heavyweight. It's never a good sign when Jim Lampley refers to you as a "Fat tub of goo" before your first title fight in the weight class but alas. Toney started the 2000s off beating Visiliy Jirov in one of the greatest fights ever and then jumped all the way up to HW to face Don King's batch of merry men at the top. As such Toney fought Holyfield (and beat him decisively), Rahman twice (and I thought he lost one and would've won the other if not for a headbutt) and John Ruiz in a fight he won decisively but popped for steroids of all things. Toney's resume has a lot of fluff in it at heavyweight (HAR HAR) but the fact he was still able to be competitive despite probably being at most a cruiserweight is pretty awesome. Toney vs Sam Peter I is also one of the best fights of the 2000s if you want to see an underrated HW banger.
8- Ruslan Chagaev Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 23-1-1 Record in title fights- 3-1 Record against other fighters on the list- 0-1
So funny story but Ruslan Chagaev was a big reason why I got back into the HW division. Watching him mid afternoon on Fox Sports upset generally bad Nikolai Valuev made me want to watch the heavyweights again, primarily because it meant in theory that I didn't have to read about how Valuev had stolen yet another fight in Germany. Chagaev's career is pretty much married with injuries and stop starts as torn ACLs, hepatitis (!) and other medical ailments led to him fighting on again off again later into the 2000s. Chagaev wasn't the most skilled HW out there but it's fair to wonder how much better (or worse) his resume would've been had he stayed healthy enough to fight guys like Lamon Brewster, Sultan Ibrabimov and Wladimir Klitschko far earlier in his run. I thought he cleanly beat guys like Valuev and Vladimir Virchys but I also thought Chagaev lost to John Ruiz for whatever it's worth.
9- Hasim Rahman Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 13-5-2 Record in title fights- 2-4-1 Record against other fighters on the list- 1-3
I don't have a great way to say this but basically it was never a good thing in the 2000s when you the likes of Hasim Rahman, John Ruiz, James Toney and Andrew Golota in a title fight. It usually meant you were about to be robbed of your time or your money with either a shitty fight or a quick stoppage. Hasim Rahman dominated the early 2000s in terms of title fights and title opportunities and our reward for that was a lot of weird bad fights and "What the fuck?" isms. So how did Rahman make the list? Partially because "The Rock" fought everybody and anybody and did well enough in almost all of those fights. To his credit, Rahman's record also has some victimhood in it. I thought he beat David Tua (and was robbed of a knockdown) when the judges gave him a draw and I thought likewise against James Toney (I had it 7-5 Rahman) but he once again got a draw. Who knows if he would've beaten Evander Holyfield if Holyfield didn't basically headbutt him to death in their fight. He beat respected dudes like Kali Meehan, Corrie Sanders and Monte Barrett during this time period. The biggest reason he's on this list? The KO win over Lennox Lewis. Even if Lewis eventually rectified that, it happened and Rahman's one of two guys to finish Lennox Lewis. That helps push him up on the top 10 list.
10- Sultan Ibragimov Record in the 00s (Jan 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009)- 22-1-1 Record in title fights- 2-1 Record against other fighters on the list- 0-1
If this was strictly about skills, Sultan Ibragimov would be ranked so much higher. Ibragimov was genuinely great and adapted his style from a stay busy all activity fighter to a more defensive oriented counter striker with quick hands. He, like most heavyweights of this era, just lacked the power to put folks away and lacked any semblance of urgency. Ibragimov rose up the ranks quickly and wins over 90s names like Shannon Briggs and Evander Holyfield put him on this list. The reason Ibragimov isn't ranked higher? That god damn Klitschko fight. Arguably the worst heavyweight fight ever, Ibragimov basically threw jabs for the first six rounds and then nothing beyond that. It pretty much killed Wlad as an attraction in the United States and dude didn't return to the Garden for seven years.

BnHA Bonus Rant #4: Bakumom
Okay guys. This is my post about Bakugou Mitsuki. This is actually my third attempt at trying to write a post on this topic; I tried to do one back when I was getting ready to post the recap for chapter 96, but wasnât able to coherently get across all of the thoughts I wanted to convey, so I ended up deleting it. Then in response to one of the comments on that recap, I ended up writing another post, and this time I managed to get out almost 1200 words on the subject! But during the editing process, I realized that it just wasnât something I had the energy to discuss. The topic of âis this character abusiveâ is obviously a very sensitive one, and something that a lot of people have very strong feelings about, and I realized that my post wasnât going to convince anyone one way or the other, and that it was more likely to lead to a discussion that I had absolutely no spoons for. Like, all my spoons went into the post itself, and that was it. So in the end I scrapped that too (and my apologies to @temperatezone, who made a very reasonable point very tactfully, which I basically ended up just ignoring because at the time I wasnât ready to get into it).
Before we start --Â regarding spoilers, Iâve done my best to keep this post spoiler-free so long as you are caught up with the anime (or have read up to the manga equivalent, which is around chapter 125 or thereabouts). There is, however, one manga spoiler in here from chapter 165 (which, if youâve read the chapter, youâll know why it was unavoidable, seeing as it pertains directly to the subject at hand). It is not in any way a plot spoiler; itâs basically a single line from one of the characters, and the details regarding where and when that line is said are irrelevant, so Iâve left that out. So if you are anime-only, itâs up to you whether you want to skip this post or not, but that will be the only spoiler in here.
So now that Iâm on my third attempt, Iâve done a bit more thinking on how I want to approach this. Basically, I think the problem I kept running up against before is that as far as I can see, there are two ways to look at this. The first is by looking at the authorâs intent. âOkay, the scene is clearly presented in the context of humor and is a classic example of the well-established Tough Love style of anime parenting (see also: Izumi from FMA, Reborn from KHR, Isshin from Bleach, etc.) and not meant to be taken in an overly deep way. The scene immediately afterward with her ruffling Katsukiâs hair and thanking Aizawa for his understanding and mentioning her worry and relief during and after the kidnapping and asking his teachers to help guide him is meant to serve as a contrast to the violence and shouting and insults to show that contrary to that initial impression, she loves and cares about him just like any other mother. The scene is meant as a lighthearted way of showing where Bakugou inherited his loud and angry temperament from, and kind of jokingly implying that heâs more or less just a clone of his mom.â
Whereas the other approach is to look at what the author is actually portraying. âIt doesnât matter if it was intended to be a joke or not; she is abusive. She smacks him repeatedly for basically no reason, and screams at him and insults him to this degree even when there are other people present. Perhaps more disturbingly, she implies that him being kidnapped was his own fault, because he was âweak.â Later on we learn that he genuinely believes this and has internalized it, and blames himself not only for getting kidnapped, but for what it led to with All Might losing his powers as a consequence. Even further down the line, Bakugou makes a throwaway remark to the effect of â[violence is] how I was raised.â This implies that it wasnât just a one-time thing and that his mother is like this all the time, to the point where violence is basically the norm for him and he doesnât even realize how fucked up it is.â
So those are basically the two perspectives here. And for me, I realized that the problem that I had was that both of these perspectives are valid. At least I think they are. If I were to try to argue the former -- which was my first instinct -- I would in all likelihood have to try and refute the latter. And honestly, I donât think I would be able to do that, because that argument is a completely valid argument. Not to mention I donât have much of a leg to stand on as far as trying to argue that Horikoshiâs intentions matter more than his end results, because if youâve read any of my recaps, you know that this is basically the one and only time Iâve ever said that, lol. Iâve never particularly cared about his harmless intentions when it comes to Mineta, or overly sexualized teenage girls, or Ochako being comically poor, or any of the other topics Iâve occasionally bitched about. So it seems a bit hypocritical for me to suddenly start arguing that now.
So I wonât. Instead, Iâm going to go ahead and acknowledge that itâs a valid interpretation. Regardless of what Horikoshi was going for, if youâre looking solely at the end result, then yeah. What he showed us can definitely be taken as abuse. I donât think itâs an overreaction, and there is a lot to back it up.
That being acknowledged, what Iâm going to talk about instead is why I have such a strong desire in this case to ignore the clumsy way the relationship is presented in canon, and to instead view the relationship the way I believe itâs intended to come across. Why do I so badly want for Bakugou to have a (more or less) healthy relationship with his parents? Why does the idea of him having a bad home life leave such a bad taste in my mouth?
And I think this is what it is: one of the key things that draws me to Bakugouâs character is that he doesnât have A Tragic Past. Thereâs this tendency in shounen manga to give virtually every important character a sad backstory (looking at you in particular, Naruto and One Piece), with the level of tragedy gradually escalating as the series goes on, until you get to a point where the fandom is literally having debates over whose past is the most tragic. And this has kind of indirectly given rise to several beliefs that I often see articulated and/or implied in fandom:
That there must always be some observable external reason for a characterâs personality and temperament, rather than that just being who they are.
That there is a direct correlation between the severity of a characterâs past and the validity of that characterâs actions. In other words, the person with the more tragic backstory has the moral upper hand in any dispute, simply because theyâve been through more bad shit.
That a characterâs potential for redemption is directly tied to how sad their backstory is.
I see this all the time, and not just in shounen fandom for that matter. The basic idea seems to be that if bad things have happened to a character in the past, then it means any bad things they themselves have done are not their fault, and they should be forgiven and given a second chance. The thing is, Iâve always disliked this way of thinking, because to me it strays from what I think is the most crucial element of any redemption arc: taking responsibility.Â
Redemption, to me, shouldnât simply be about whether we feel sorry for the character, or whether they have suffered enough and been punished enough for whatever it is they did, or even whether or not they had a good reason for it. To me, itâs about one thing and one thing only: is the character trying to be better. Do they want to change? Are they making the same mistakes over and over, or are they actually learning and trying to grow?Â
To me, redemption is an active process. Itâs something the character has to seek out themselves. Itâs not something thatâs granted to them (key difference here between âredemptionâ and âforgivenessâ), nor does it matter whether or not anyone else thinks they deserve it. For me, at least, itâs simply a matter of whether or not the character is willing to take responsibility for their mistakes, and whether they actually take action toward becoming better.
That being said, this is the main problem I have with the âMitsuki is abusiveâ line of thinking: from what I have observed (and not always, mind you, but often enough), this headcanon tends to overlap with the idea that Bakugouâs violent behavior is not his fault, and that heâs only like that because of the way he was raised. In some cases Iâve seen it taken even further than that, with basically Bakugouâs entire backstory basically being rewritten to make him out as just a poor traumatized kid who would never have abused Izuku if it wasnât for Mitsukiâs abuse, and so the blame actually falls on her and not him. And that, right there, is probably the biggest problem I have with this. That shifting of the blame. Making it so that Bakugou is absolved of responsibility for his own shitty actions, because it turns out that he was just a victim too.Â
And actually, itâs even more than that: itâs also the implied suggestion that this is the only way he can be redeemed. That he only qualifies for redemption if he had a good reason for his actions. That we can only feel sorry for him if heâs not to blame for the mistakes that he made, and if it Wasnât His Fault.
And damn it, but I just take so much issue with this. Because to me, ironically enough, this narrative robs Bakugou of the agency that I personally believe is key to him getting the redemption arc he actually deserves. Does that make sense? Basically, I want Bakugouâs mistakes to be acknowledged as his own mistakes. Because they are. I want him to be able to take ownership of them and to realize what he did wrong. I want him to learn from those mistakes and to grow as a person because of them. I donât want it to be all âoh sweetie itâs okay, itâs not your fault.â I want it to be âoh fuck, I really screwed up, and I hate the way I feel now because of it, and I never want to feel this way again, so Iâm going to do better.âÂ
Because thatâs the only way that real change actually happens. When it comes from within, from the characterâs own desire to change. I donât want a âhe was never really bad, just misunderstoodâ narrative; I want âhe fucked up, but he is learning from it, and he is growing.â Thatâs what I want.
So that, I think, is why the whole thing bothers me so much, and why I just canât get behind the idea. Again, I wonât deny that the evidence is there. I just choose to interpret it another way. And it is just that: a choice. Itâs a conscious choice to read between the lines and to add my own headcanons where necessary and insert little justifications and explanations for things when needed.Â
Because to me, Bakugou having grown up in a supportive -- if chaotic -- household is important. Itâs important because it shows that even people who grew up in healthy environments with no obvious trauma can fuck up regardless. And those people are still worthy of redemption.
I hope that all makes sense. (Particularly since if it doesnât, I've just gone and pissed a whole bunch of people off, probably.) Anyways. So with all that being said, Iâll wrap this up with a list of my own personal headcanons about Mitsukiâs and Katsukiâs relationship.
First and foremost, if any of you have ever seen Malcolm in the Middle, I can very easily sum this all up by just saying that Mitsuki = Lois and Katsuki = Malcolm, Francis, and Reese all rolled up into one. Thatâs it. Thatâs the dynamic, right there.
But if you havenât seen MitM, basically what Iâm saying is that Katsuki is a precocious little brat whoâs headstrong and rebellious and extremely independent and prone to only learning things the hard way, and Mitsuki is the stern and stubborn mom who is still caring and loving but also overbearing and aggressive. The two of them are always butting heads because theyâre both extremely prideful and view themselves as always being right, and because Mitsukiâs overbearing tendencies clash directly with Katsukiâs independent streak.
Mitsuki actually is right more often than sheâs not, which only fuels her own stubbornness as well at Katsukiâs teenage resentment towards her. She spent a lot of time when he was younger just trying to keep him from setting the house (and himself) on fire, and because he hardly ever listens, the two of them end up getting into a lot of screaming matches with each other, and nowadays thatâs just kind of their dynamic and theyâre just used to it.
She doesnât actually think heâs weak, and she only said that because she knows thatâs one of the few insults that rankles him enough to actually make him listen, and she was trying to get him to hush up and be respectful to his teachers, who were guests in their home and also his teachers, one of whom just saved his life and the other of whom defended his honor in a nationally broadcast press conference. And also this was part of the whole Japanese culture of being overly humble, and since she knew he was never gonna do it, she was kind of doing it for him. You know, like âthank you so much for saving me, I apologize for inconveniencing you.â Even though it wasnât actually his fault.
He didnât internalize the guilt about All Might because of what she said. I honestly think he barely even processed what she said because theyâre always just yelling bullshit insults at each other that donât actually really mean anything. Heâs always been terrified of being weak precisely because he never has been. Itâs the unknown. He wouldnât know what to do if he wasnât strong. Itâs a fear heâs always had, and one that had been secretly growing stronger since he first started at U.A. What happened to All Might simply exacerbated that fear. It was already there, and heâd just kept it hidden for a very long time. His mom didnât put the idea into his head, and never would have said it if she had even the slightest inkling that her cocky, arrogant, loudmouthed, forceful son was secretly harboring insecurities about that very thing.
Any violence in their household is the comedic shounen type of violence where no one is actually hurt in any way. But mostly itâs just loud.
They are so used to this being Just The Way Things Are that ironically, Katsuki would have been much more unsettled if, after he returned home following the kidnapping, his mom had been tender and affectionate. Mitsuki, being a smart mom, picked up on this, so in an effort to make him less uncomfortable, she took deliberate care to behave The Same As Always around him so that he could feel more normal. In fact she was actually still very freaked out herself for days afterward, much more so than she let on (because sheâs just as bad at showing vulnerability as he is).
It actually helped. He will never ever acknowledge this out loud, but he realized what she was doing, and heâs grateful.
And I could go on and on, but I think this more or less summarizes how I view the two of them. They basically have their own language by this point, where phrases like âfuck you tooâ mean âI love youâ, and so forth. She loves him to death and worries about him constantly and is so, so proud of him. He loves her too and she doesnât piss him off nearly as much as he pretends, and he would be devastated beyond words if anything were to ever happen to her. He actually thinks sheâs the strongest person he knows, maybe even tougher than All Might, and he would never, ever say this out loud.
Sooo... yeah. Iâm trying to think of a good way to end this post now, but I canât think of anything lol. I think Iâve said everything I wanted to. Tl;dr, Iâve made a conscious decision to view Mitsuki as a highly combative but loving parent to her troublesome tsundere son because I want Katsuki to man up and take responsibility for his own shit, because I love him. The end.

Stuff About Isa Nobody Asked For
Genuinely misses Anti. Not for any intimate or morally questionable reason but just bc she misses the adrenaline rush being around him was and getting to observe him idly existing. Sheâs gotten to see more plain, human behavior from Anti than anyone and she deeply misses the power it gave her. She misses reading him and having the privilege to safely just.. watch him exist, and misses the high of weaving through conversation with him without getting herself in trouble. She partially blames her longing to have this ability back for her hookup on Anti.
Since she canât have this privilege back she really wishes she had someone to gush to and reminisce about it to but anyone sheâd consider gushing about anything to in general would likely frown upon her fondness and yearning for it. Writing about it obsessively in her journal isnât satisfying enough.
She frequently gets this almost instinctual feeling sheâs going to play a major part in whenever Anti suffers his downfall and how it happens. Sheâs got Iâm The Main Protagonist And I Donât Think Its By Choice syndrome and she gets this feeling so vividly so often sheâs dreamed of ways it would play out many times. Theyâre all saved in her journal in extensive detail.
Isa is incredibly introverted- partially out of personal shame she canât quite shake off -and finds it hard to be as boldly present as she used to be. However, as soon as sheâs comfortable with those who are present, she absolutely thrives off deep conversations that flow smoothly from topic to topic and has a huge affinity for extremely detailed analysis. She could sink her teeth into something and milk every last detail out for hours, stretching out thoughts about even the tiniest, most insignificant things. She could intricately discuss the details of details. This is what makes her such a passionate theorist (aside from her copious amounts of intel on Anti) and exactly why Cali appointed her head of the ONW Resistance Theorist Department.
At times she can be too self-aware for her own good, which only makes her more self-conscious. Sometimes sheâs too cynical, sometimes sheâs too obsessed with trauma, sometimes sheâs too focused on her guilt and shame, and the list goes on. She hates that sheâs picked up on these mindsets she has and hates that they all feel so intense.
Sheâs a huge tinkerer and loves crafting things, especially if theyâll be useful for her or others to use. Sheâs built devices and random trinkets as gifts for family members, especially Henrik, and built a majority of Community all on her own out of sheer enjoyment in having a huge project to hyperfocus on for a good while. Even now after Community has existed for months, sheâs still finding little things here and there to build and add onto.
Despite her bad habit of doubting and sometimes degrading herself, sheâs extremely grateful for everything she has. This is especially true with Henrik. She is thrilled to have an actual healthy father figure in her life, even though she is still struggling with a) feeling like she deserves him b) getting used to having a father figure at all since she hasnât had a father since she was a toddler. The same can be said for her relationship with her boyfriend Kai.
She l i v e s for her relationship with Henrik. Theyâre so alike in so many ways, she gets an absolute kick out of how easy it is for her to bond with him.
She sometimes forgets how lucky she is to know the egos personally and gets confused at how magical it is for others to even see their faces. Although sheâs become accustomed to them living around her constantly, seeing other community members being stunned to see the egos in person warms her heart.
She despises wearing dresses and skirts yet loves the aesthetic of them. Masculine Gay(tm) to the core.
Even with her love for details and deep analysis, overloading her with them or with a broad topic with a lot to unpack sends her attention spiraling and she gets overwhelmed. This often causes her ramblings and such to fall short or feel lesser in quality than something she feels she can cover the entirety of easily.
She has an obsession with big cats and its one of the few ânormalâ passions sheâs maintained even after the war has changed her so much.
She either feels super proud and powerful about how much sheâs changed after all sheâs been through or feels like a stranger in her own body desperately trying to contact the ghost of her old self and grieving its death, thereâs no in-between.
When it comes to kids and babies, she is the classic ânononononono no no no no no oH MY GOD I LOVE THIS SMALL HUMANâ type of person.
Has a probably semi-unhealthy okayness with how often and how hard her permanent corruption causes her to disassociate. Sheâs interested in attempting to study how her own mind and body functions when it happens.
Ironically even though sheâs super interested in analysis and studying how things work, sheâs not very into science. The closest interest she has to science- which could be argued that it IS a science -is psychology.
She has the sketchbooks she obsessively drew Anti in during October 2016. Looking at them now fills her with an emotion she canât really describe.
Part of her wants her loved ones to invade her privacy and read the things in her journal, even though a majority of it would concern or otherwise bother them. Sheâs curious how theyâd react.
She constantly seeks out Mantis and Caspian so the three of them can hang out alone. They often reminisce and talk about their puppet days and what recovery is like from all of it.
She especially, but also the boys, sometimes have âoff daysâ whether caused by permanent corruption or something else where they want to do nothing but stick together and only speak to each other.

Relevant information from Ayallaâs livestream:
>Are we going to finish him? He's on his last leg. So, to be honest, I feel like with everybody he's speaking out about their own stories it's pretty much already finished, and clearly we all know he tried to go on that crazy smear campaign essentially turning all the accusations against him against me, which, I mean, was pretty nuts but if you watch it it's pretty obvious what he was trying to do, so. >He outed someoneâs sexual assault after she came out. Yup! Well, Greg actually made sort of an underhanded joke in a video about something that he very vaguely knows about me and it seemed like he was just trying to let me know that there was more about me that he knew that he could talk about, which he, you know, has brought up before over email asking me about the abuse that I suffered in my past, and I told him that it all wasn't true because he, you know, was clearly doing it to try to use it against me, and I am not going to be blackmailed by the things that I've already been through my life. Like, that's pretty⊠pretty nuts to assume that that would silence me. I mean, I've never been quiet about what I've been through in my life so it's just a little nutty but he does very clearly dig up people's pasts and look for abuse to try to use it against them because a lot of people aren't comfortable with having their abuse stories public. I'm not really afraid of stuff like that I feel like I've always been pretty open with my following so that does not scare me. [Playing video games] >If you come out with your trauma, heâs got nothing against you. Yeah, I actually spoke to my mom about it because I didn't really know what to do if he does ever decide to try to like publicly smear me for getting abused as a child. I don't really know what the right course of action is. My mom just said, âhave you ever seen Eight Mile?â You know, if there's anything you think he's gonna throw at you just throw it out first and he's got nothing, and I feel like in a lot of ways she's right. Though, I was never really quiet about it before. >What happened when you were caught sneaking out? He just tried to convince us to stay but it was pretty evident at the time that that was not a situation we needed to be in. >He thinks because he shares way too much that no one else should have boundaries. I believe that he over shares about himself because he gets some sort of validation from me but he is very aware that people have boundaries, and I think that that's why he does it. So he can say that he thinks that everybody should be open but it's not typical for everybody to put, you knowâeverything that's ever happened to them on the internet. I mean, I haven't talked about every single thing that's ever happened to me my whole life. I talk about important things. I've talked about, you know, mental health issues. I've talked about fear. Iâve talked about a lot of different things, so⊠>He needs to have basic respect in the first place. That is true. I mean, he has gone out of his way to try to out a lot of people for things that they didn't want public so that they would stop coming out and speaking about the things that he has done, and clearly it's not working. I've been in contact with a lot of the girls who suffered from some of these situations and it's not really working on them either. I'm so glad for that because I can tell you from the first time that he went on a crazy smear campaign  about me it was terrifying. I had no idea what to do. I mean, I posted a video crying on the internet because I had asked him so many times privately to stop speaking about me, and stop using my name, and my face, and everything like that. He does not respect boundaries. He does not respect people's privacy. He will post your deepest darkest secrets if he has to to try to make you look bad, and for me, you know, my deepest, darkest secrets arenât even bad things that Iâve done. Theyâre bad things that have happened to me. I really feel like I might be, you knowâit might be a better idea to just come out and speak about what happened to me as a kid before he tries to use it against me, which I don't even know how he would try to do that or how he would try to spin it to make me look bad because I don't think that you should ever blame a child for being abused. Itâs clearly not their fault, but⊠>He's quite the sunshine, isnât he? Yeah. >Did he ever use publicity as a threat? So, he doesn't ever say specifically that heâs going to do things like that. I think that he just does it and it's typically whenever he feels that he is losing power in the situation or he does not have control over a situation. He will do things like that. Yeah, he talks a lot about how he's getting death threats now because of everything that's going on, and it's actually a classic manipulation tactic to try to play the victim and deflect blame whenever you are caught up in something. >He wants to manipulate you so youâll stop talking about him. Yeah, I understand that. I mean, I was very aware what he was doing even the first time when him and my best friend didn't work out. Well, and then Lainey and my best friend didn't work out, and he went on this crazy campaign to try to make us look awful because he knew that we were very aware of all of the crazy things that he did and requested. >What did you mean last time you said he very different online as when heâs offline? In person, I would say he's he's very charismatic, which is, I think, very different from how he is online. It's a little more, I think, cold online. It's a little more calculated. If he does post things for a purpose online whereas in person he just uses a specific way of speaking to get what he wants. So, it doesn't take as much effort in real life to do the things that he does. >Has he verbally and psychologically abused these girls? Yes, absolutely. It's actually pretty scary to see the way that he goes about things because he does pretty much all looks a typical manipulation tactics where he starts off with very positive reinforcement and love bombing and slowly but surely he will sort of take away those things or he will sort of mistreat you if you're not acting the way that he wants. Heâll threaten to send you home or take things away or a lot of different things. He will insult you if you are not acting the way that he wants. He will clearly publicly humiliate you if you're not behaving in a way that he finds acceptable. >Do you think that the judicial system is going to be able to make a case against him? From what I can see, Greg is very careful to make sure that he skims that legal line so that he will not get in trouble. He's very tactical about the way that he does these things so that legally there's nothing you can do. I can tell you  times a day that he's morally corrupt and, you know, he gets into people's heads and it's scary to be honest, but he works very very hard to make sure that he will get away with these things, and that's why I felt like saying something publicly is really one of the best things that I could do because even if everything he's doing is not against the law per se, that doesn't mean that it's morally right or that people should not know that he's doing these things to young women and it's not, you knowâ Young women out there should have access to the information that you will manipulate his way into getting you to do things that you would have never done or say things that you would have never said before and⊠yeah. >How do you feel about himâ Ok, so. I didn't ever try to sleep with that young woman. I think I've made that pretty clear. It was clearly a defence tactic to try to sort of deflect blame onto someone else. I was 19 years old at the time. I was also a teenager and he clearly tried to paint me as this horrible pervert, and I didn't ever try anything with her but I was also a teenager at the time, which has no comparison to a 33 year old man or a 25 year old woman doing similar things. I know he tried really really hard to make it look like I was this awful person and I'm sure it's pretty obvious, like, how he did it and why he did it and I'm actually very glad that people can understand that I'm not that kind of person. >He tries to punish these girls for acting ways he deems disrespectful That's true. He once threatened to send the young woman that was discussed before and also Billie home because they wouldn't babysit his children. So, it's pretty crazy. >Does he restrict everyone from seeing their family? He did ask one of these girls to not contact her family for an entire year and move in with him and have no contact with anybody from where she lived including myself. So he does go through and use isolation as another tactic to keep these girls, you know, within his grasp. All of its kind of messed up it's just I know that they skim the legal line. Everybody says go to the police but I plan on talking to the police and bringing them all of this information but they are very careful about whether or not they break the law so that even if  this all comes out one day and people realize what he's been doing to these women that he can't actually go to jail it would just ruin his YouTube, but it's pretty⊠[sigh]. Just the whole thing's messy. >Let the police decide what to do. Right, and I do plan that. I'm actually not in my hometown right now, which is the only reason they haven't gone to the police yet, but I will be going back tomorrow but I plan on going to the police and sort of giving them all of the information that I have and ask them what I should do about it. About the videos he's made about me painting me as a pervert and about all of these things that he's doing to these young women because he's clearly got a pattern. There's clearly a very evident way that he goes about things, but Iâve been doing research to try to understand a little better how he does these things because it's scary and it's important that you can recognize the things that he does, or the things that anybody like that will do. >Can you go into detail about him getting mad at the two girls not wanting to babysit? Those are the details that I have, that they were not doing an adequate enough job to babysit so he threatened to send them both home. >Has Greg tried to contact you since the last e-mail? Other than the text that he posted in his video trying to smear me he has not contacted me since then, no. I know itâs not their job. [As in, not the girls job to babysit] >Did Lainey genuine want a relationship with a female? I have no idea what Lainey really wanted. It was a deflection tactic very clearly. I was 19 at the time, like, it's just crazy to be painted as a pervert when, first of all you didn't do anything, but also, like, a teenager talking to a teenager. I don't know it just doesn't make any sense see why he was under the impression that that would work, and I'm sure that it was just an intimidation tactic to be like, hey, you know I can make you look bad, too, but it's not just me coming out and speaking about the things that they've done. I think that me being able to come out and say anything at all has inspired a lot of young women who have suffered through this to come forward and tell their stories and share what happened. >Greg is scared of you. I don't think he should be scared of me. I think he should be scared of the truth. I have never done anything to Greg. I have never really been rude to him him. I have never really done anything to him other than being vocal about the abuse that he so clearly associates himself with. I mean, the first time he went on a smear campaign it was because I was public about some of the things that he did to my best friend even when she wasn't because he was trying so hard to make her look awful, and I tweeted about how he tried to chain her up in the basement for a week, and make her shave her head, and dye her moss hair, or get I'm a liar tattooed on her. Even cornered her in the garage once to try to convince her to get a tattoo, and I came in shortly after and I was like, this is not okay, and that's actually the day that we left. >What was the last straw? So, for a long time I really was just too scared to say anything because after I said anything about what he had done to my best friend he went on this horrible smear campaign about how Iâm a criminal and a degenerate and all of these things and I was scared. I mean, he made videos about me for over a year after I had even seen him. I only met him one time. So it took a long time. I mean, it's been two years since this situation happenedâtwo years in a month, I think. For a year and a half of that I was still on the front page of his YouTube, or I was in his videos, or he was referencing me in a lot of different ways, and I was scared because I don't know what he's capable of. >Why was Sarah under the [inaudible]? I have no idea. Because thatâs what they said. >Standing up to Greg was very brave of you. It took a lot. I mean, to this day it still takes a lot. It's only been a short time since I came out and I haven't really been sleeping because I know some of the girls that he's trying to blackmail and use information against to keep their silence and it's scary. That's just, like, I don't want him to try to ruin my life because I think that it's important that people know what he does young women and what he tries to do the young women, though not always as successful as heâd like to be. >Do you think he sees himself as a normal guy? Well, maybe he does. I feel like it would be scarier if he didn't realize what he was doing. I feel like it's pretty impossible to be so good at manipulating and doing it to so many people without even realizing. I don't even really think that thatâs a thing. >How does he think any of this is ok? I really don't know. I feel like for somebody who comes off as honest and moral and some white knight it's pretty insane. I mean, he once posted an email he got from an ex-friend of mine on Twitter, like, trying to paint me as this awful person. I had to email him and have him take it down because the e-mail was from somebody who I knew in real life but I had had to threaten to call the police on that person before for showing up at my house and it was pretty clear then that if he has anything from anyone that could put you in a bad light, whether or not that person is dangerous to you, he will use it, and he acted like he was my hero for even taking down that post. Also whenever he e-mailed me aboutâasking me about the abuse that I suffered as a child he insinuated that I should be thankful that he hasn't said anything about that publicly online, and I know that that was just another tactic to get me to not say anything but it's pretty scary. He goes through a lot of effort to make sure these people are too scared to come forward and a lot of them are. I'm sure that there's many people who won't even say anything about it because they're worried about what he's going to do, and I knew going into that it would be really really hard to do this and that he would go out of his way to try to make me look bad, and make videos like the one that he posted, trying to paint me as this awful person, and I knew that from experience. He's done it to me before but I realized that it was more important to come out to speak about this so people will know what's going on instead of avoiding it to try to save himself. I would rather you know go down in a blaze then let two, or three, or four more people go through this. It's not right and it's not ok. >Did you help Billie out of the manipulation and help her leave? Yeah, I did because I noticed it a lot sooner than she did, and for a long time she was too deep it in to do anything about it, so she needed some assistance, which I feel like is pretty typical for a lot of these girls because you don't even realize how deep in it you are until it's too late. >It's weird he uses Richie to attach you and then attacks you himself. Yeah, I do think it's pretty crazy that whenever he was attacking Richie, he says that he defended me from blackmail from Richie, and thatâRichie was gonna come out and say all these bad things about me, and though Richie did threaten to blackmail me so I wouldn't speak out about the fact that he had cheated on me so many times and he was looking for 18 year old girls, you know, Richie was trying to keep me quiet, too, using the same tactics that Greg used because he's got such a large following. He tried to defend me when Ritchie was trying to blackmail me, but now he himself is trying to blackmail all of these other girls. I think it's so twisted and crazy that he acts like heâs such this, you know, righteous person for defending me at any point but he goes around and does the same thing to not only me, but to so many other people. I didn't offer anybody drugs. I smoke marijuana. We've been over that, but I don't go around handing people drugs. I don't even have any drugs. I mean how was I even gonna get these drugs if I was locked in his house. Thatâs what I want to know. Well, I wasnât locked in. Clearly I could have left because I did. Yeah, no. I didnât. Not a thing. I never hit on Sarah. She [Billie] has very much separated herself from this situation and she's got no interest in diving back into it because clearly they will never leave her alone. >What other red flags did you notice? It's prettyâitâs, like, typical language. I mean, he will offer financial gain or financial loss. He will insult you, or make fun of you, or try to make you feel like you're doing something wrong if you're not acting the way he wants you to. It's a lot of different things. If you look up just manipulation tactics, which I was earlier today actually, it's pretty point-blank everything that he does. Victim-blaming, deflection, all of those sorts of things. It's pretty cut and dry. >Did he write your visit off for taxes? I believe he did. I know that he made a video with me and that's normally all he needs to write off stuff in taxes, so even in his vide he said that he paid for my tickets. Itâs pretty typical for him to write things like that off on those taxes. So, again, just another way to try to make me look like I was doing something that was wrong, I guess. >Question about how Billie is doing She's good. Billieâs actually great. She's really happy now. She's been working a lot on YouTube channel and trying out new things and she's really a lot happier than she was. It's actually kind of great to see her doing so well because for a long time she wasn't for obvious reasons. >Billieâs flourishing. She is! Sheâs living her best life these days. Her best life. >Are you and Billie working? Actually, I have an interview on Tuesday for a new job, which is very exciting and hopefully they don't Google me right now because clearly Gregâs off the handle. Iâd be pretty upset. The last time that he contacted her [Billie] was not ten months ago. It was much more recent than that but, you know. Whatever. >Why does he keep contacting her? He's obsessed. He says things like he has dreams that won't go away, and, you know, things like that. He once called me and essentially spoke to me non-stop for about an hour just about howâwhat started off, oh, Lainey misses Billie, and Lainey needs closure, and then he pretty quickly went into, like, Lainey has dreams about her all the time. Pretty quickly into, oh, I have dreams about her and I can't get her out of my head. So, he was using Lainey to try to say she's the one who needed something but yeah. It's clearly him because he only talked about himself in the end. >Do you know more women will be coming forward? Truthfully, I hope that they do but I know that not everybody is willing to go through what I'm already going through to try and take him down. It's pretty scary especially when you are a young woman to have you know a 33 year old man trying to essentially defame you. I mean, it's terrifying for me and I'm a lot older now than I was the first time. Greg said a lot about my best friend cheating but that never happened. Not a real thing. >Has Lainey ever talked bad about Greg? Yes? Though not publicly. Yes, I was in contact with that young woman. And she contacted me, so it was direct. I donât think that they claimed her on their taxes. I am going to go to the police and bring them all of the information that I have but they are very careful about skimming that legal line so I don't know that they will do anything about it but I will be giving them all of that information just to make sure that they are aware. >He's the Youtube version of R. Kelly I feel like I've seen it a lot. That's funny. We never encouraged anybody to starve themselves. Billie and I have never had an eating disorder. We've never been diagnosed with an eating disorder or treated for an eating disorder. I'm 130 pounds right now at 5â6â. I mean, by no means underweight I've been essentially this weight since high school, so, you know. It was pretty much just a part of the initial smear campaign him saying that we starve ourselves and we've got all of these issues, but it was never a real thing, which my mom tweets about a lot actually. Every time my mom sees me eating she'll tweet a picture of it because there have been so many rumors about me having an eating disorder because of Greg. >Is there anything you havenât said because youâre scared? There are things that I am not going to share because it has been requested of me not to share but, no. There's no information that I have about them pertaining to me specifically that I have not at least tried to share. >It can mentally screw with you. Right. Well, it was pretty crazy for a couple months having my whole feed just being like, oh, stop starving yourself⊠[irrelevant talk] I don't mind you asking any specific questions. There are just some questions that I don't really have a clear answer to. I do not know every inner working of their marriage or what they talk about in private, so there's only so much I can speak about truthfully, and I never have any intention of misrepresenting myself or them. >Is there anything about Lainey that would surprise us and that we should be aware of? I don't really know that there's anything that would surprise you about her. She is pretty similar to her online personality in real life.

>By all accounts, he shouldnât still care for his father the way he does, but thatâs a topic for another time (and one I will happily go into, if anyone likes).
Sure!Â
Gonna put a warning message before my answer on this, though. Everyone be advised the topics Iâm going to discuss are uncomfortable as the subject is about Ryokenâs relationship (or lack thereof) with his father, who abused not only other children but his own as well and before anyone says âRyoken was never abused!âÂ
Yes.Â
He was.Â
Just not in the same way as the other six.
Abuse takes different forms and just because something isnât physical or doesnât leave marks on someoneâs body, doesnât mean itâs not abuse.
But yes. Big warning ahead of my thoughts. Just in case someone would rather not read it. Also spoilers for the whole series. Thereâs some screenshots in here. Otherwise, carry on.
So Dr. Kogami is a horrible, awful person. We all know this. Not only did he kidnap and experiment on six, six-year-old children for six long months, but he allowed his only child to discover these experiments and showed no kind of remorse for his actions at any point in the series. There was only the one time, just before his death, where he admitted to not doing anything fatherly for Ryoken. Just that one hot second of maybe regret and considering how he immediately jumps into the âBut the world needs you.â drivel, heâs only making excuses and I donât believe he actually regrets how he treated Ryoken all that much.
And thatâs it. A whole lot of nothing that only really enforced how much of a terrible person Dr. Kogami is. It wasnât a redemption (even if perhaps Ryoken himself might have seen it as a sort of apology from a father to his son). It wasnât even one of YGOâs handwaved or half-assed attempts at a villain redemption. He just was never redeemed and things are fine like that because honestly, I donât believe thereâs anything they could have done or could still do to redeem that man. VRAINS continually condemns Dr. Kogami for his actions in one form or another and goes through great pains to express that Ryoken is not at fault for anything his father has done. If anything, heâs a victim and this is YGO so itâs not going to go that deeply into it, but VRAINS has gone surprisingly deep into this subject as well as with the six kids considering itâs, at its core, a card game anime meant to promote cards. And honestly, the later time slot the show was given makes total sense because itâs not so much the graphic depictions of torn-off limbs or avatar corpses it shows, but the entire subject of abuse and learning to heal and overcome it. VRAINSâ theme is âtaking a step forwardâ and it shines through in this sense because while it is a card game anime, it very much is a story about abuse survivors and characters with deep depression finding themselves and learning how to live despite their trauma.
The abuse of the six Lost Incident children is easy to see and understand, but there are other characters such as Ryoken, Aoi, Shoichi, etc. that are suffering through depression for various reasons. Ryoken grew up with essentially no one. All he had was his father. We donât know what happened to his mother. Itâs possible she died during childbirth or died before Ryoken was old enough to remember her and thus could be a catalyst to setting Dr. Kogami on the path to try manufacturing immortality. Itâs also possible that Ryoken was a test tube baby and as much as I hate to think it, itâs also possible the mother just left. Unless the show tells us directly one day, weâll never know. Regardless, Dr. Kogami was Ryokenâs only parentâhis only role modelâand a parent is God in the eyes of a child. His father was his whole world and he loved his father very dearly. He had no reason to believe, at such a young age, that his father was capable of physically hurting someone. Thatâs just not something children think about until it actually happens.
And then, of course, it does happen.
Ryoken brings home a friend one day. That friend is Yusaku. Dr. Kogami, Iâm assuming, used Ryoken to lure Yusaku to him. Canât say about the others because no one except Yusaku has given any indication that they remember meeting a tiny white marshmallow with a deck of Duel Monsters cards, but itâs possible. However, itâs odd that he would only choose to speak with Yusaku and no one else, so Iâm thinking this was either a one-time case or he could only get in contact with Yusakuâs cell. But the fact is he and Yusaku meet and Ryoken takes him home. Maybe they played for a little while and I imagine they probably did. Dr. Kogami was after child duelists, specifically, since he believed dueling was the best way for the developing Ignis to understand human behaviour and a young child would still be in the development phase/easier to study, making his experiments have better results overall. So heâd probably want proof they knew how to duel first. What better way than to let his son have a playmate before taking them away? He could have witnessed the other kids dueling or, considering he had assistants to help him with this, they also could have helped in the kidnapping.
His father was so obsessed with the idea of creating humanityâs successors that he kidnapped and tortured six children for months and months and he used his only child to get at least one of them. His eight-year-old son, who didnât understand what was going on. His eight-year-old son, who had no reason to believe his father could do evil. His eight-year-old-son, who he claimed to never want involved but did absolutely nothing to prevent Ryoken from findingâand hearing!! Ryoken heard them screaming!!âthe experiments he was performing on those kids. He starved them, electrocuted them, left them in cold, lonely rooms where they slowly began to lose hope and inched closer and closer to death.
And those kids absolutely would have died had Ryoken not blown the whistle on the whole thing.
Think about it. Dr. Kogami kidnapped these children to use them for experiments. Test subjects gathered in such a way do not typically have happy endings. Dr. Kogami would not have let them go. He would have kept them in those rooms until they died, until they gave up. He couldnât risk the kids going back and telling the authorities and having all his research taken away from him. They were only there for six months because Ryoken made it end. The only child that might have survived, in the end, would have probably been Spectre. Yusaku was giving up, Jin was being tortured with false hope by Lightning and withdrawing from everything, and canât say about the others. Miyu kept thinking of Aoi and how much she wanted to see her again and that kept her going, but we donât know how long she could have lasted. Maybe she would have survived alongside Spectre, though. So at the most, two of the six would have survived.
But the point is, Dr. Kogami is a bad person. Ryoken has every reason to not care for him. He was neglected, manipulated, used. And his father didnât care. He kept doing it. He kept using him and manipulating him into thinking he had anything to do with this whole mess. Now Ryoken has done some bad things himself. He tried to nuke the entire network in a suicide mission, which was part following his fatherâs orders and part his guilt complex surfacing. His father was going to let this happen, too. He didnât care if Ryoken lived or died so long as the Ignis were also dead in the process. Dr. Kogami is truly, truly an awful person.Â
But like I said before, a parent is a childâs whole world and Dr. Kogami was all Ryoken had. Even though he was manipulated and neglected and never even tried to deny these things when his father spoke of causing him to suffer, he still stayed by his side. He kept quiet and suffered in alone. He shouldnât have had to deal with that. He could have chosen to leave his father and no one would blame him, but a point I want to make here is Ryoken choosing to stay with his father despite all heâs done is both him not wanting to abandon his only father out of guilt heâs being a bad son and a classic example of a victim defending their abuser. Itâs even more complicated when that abuser is a parent. Ryoken was very young and wasnât physically abused, but I think you already know where Iâm going with this because I kept mentioning it. Neglect and manipulation and grooming to be a martyr for killing the Ignis. Ryoken was a means to an end for Dr. Kogami and Ryoken was willing to die for him if it meant his father was paying attention to him finally. Of course, even then, it was all about the Ignis. Nothing Ryoken ever did to please him made him be fatherly.
He says, in front of his own child. Who he has no qualms about letting die along with the Ignis with the Tower of Hanoi plan he hatched.
That must have hurt an awful lot. Ryoken didnât deserve any of this. He was done very, very wrong by his father, who never gave a shit about him. Dr. Kogami doesnât deserve to have him as a son, but I understand why Ryoken stuck with him. He wanted his attention, he wanted his love, he wanted to be important in his fatherâs life, and Iâm sorry, Ryoken, honey, that you never got it.
#Kogami Ryoken#VRAINS#Sery writes a thing#breakdawn-avenue#I can't fault him for sticking with him#he just wanted to be a good son#Dr. Kogami doesn't deserve Ryoken#i hope the bastard stays dead#long post#honestly this was just be rambling and dragging Dr. Kogami through the mud idek if it makes sense oof

Top 5 Things I Disliked About RWBY Volume 6
(Top 5 Likes)
Well everyone⊠we made it. I started doing this Likes/Dislikes series on Monday, hoping to get it done before Saturday. The lesson here is to do better about pre-planning. Nevertheless⊠I did it. Volume 6. The most recent volume. My favorite volume of the entire series. I am so ready to gush about everything that I love about this! But we gotta do Dislikes first, and there are a few. Unlike the others though where nearly all of them are outdated or irrelevant, whether these will be improved on or not remains to be seen. So letâs not waste any time and get to the Top 5 Dislikes of RWBY Volume 6.
#5. Neo Fanservice
This is Number 5 because it more annoys me than anything else, but it doesnât ruin anything. Iâm not a fan of Neo. I find her to be a pointless addition who only exists because of her design. Which she does have a fantastic design, and her being mute is interesting. But otherwise? She was just⊠there. I didnât care about the character then, and I donât care now. I knew that she was gonna come back for CInderâs head, and this feels like the right time. But by the writers own admission, shes there just to flare up CIndrâs plotline. Which⊠why not use this to flesh out Cinder? Tell us her backstory or at least hint at it. Explain her motivations. Have us understand why sheâs as horrible and power-hungry as she is. Explain what the heck happened when Ruby Silver Eyes blasted her in Volume 3 already!
I know that theyâre likely waiting for the right moment, but like with V4 it just feels like theyâre dodging it and people are running out of patience. So I feel like there were other ways to make CInderâs plot more interesting. Throwing in Neo feels⊠well⊠I hate to say it, but lazy. Which I know isnât true. Miles and Kerry are insanely hard-working and devoted to this show and away as far from lazy as it gets. I guess they just hit writersâ block? Knew that people wanted to see Neo again and felt like this was the right time? I donât know. It wasnât badly written or executed and sets the stage for the future. But still, I do wish that they took a more creative route and let us actually get to know Cinder when they had the chance. Itâs disappointing.
Again, this is on here because I know Iâm in the minority. A lot of people really like Neo and want to see more of her character. And I canât lie, with Roman gone, there is some motivation for her and now thereâs room to flesh her out. So while I donât care about her, I am interested in seeing what they do with her. To see what sheâs planning because there is now ay that sheâs not going t give up on making CInder suffer. But I can absolutely see her still wanting payback on Ruby who was both involved with Romanâs death and knocked Neo off the plane and prevented her from helping him. Weâve got a classic revenge story in the making people. Letâs hope that itâs a good one.
#4. The Reaction to Jinnâs Story
This one is⊠complicated. Why? Because I donât hate this. At all. You might think that Iâm about to get mad that RWBYQ were all angry at Oz. But⊠no, Iâm not. I fully sympathize with Oz. I donât think that heâs this horrible monster who did all that he did because heâs horrible. Oz is just a man. A man who has been through so much pain for so long, all because he tried to do the right thing and be with his wife again. He has so much guilt and self-loathing and I just feel terrible for him and all that heâs been through. But it doesnât change the fact that heâs lied and used people, even if it was because he had to. People got hurt. People have died. All because of him and his cause. He isnât as horrible as Salem or the Gods, but RWBYQ has every right to be angry at him for what, in their eyes, is leading them on a suicide mission. So no, I donât have a problem with their reactions.
My problem is that they all have the same reaction.
There is no diversity in how they all take this, nor with JNR. I guess that Jaune, Yang, and Qrow took it worst than everyone else, but all of their reactions are pretty much being angry at Oz and feeling hopeless. The only person who keeps nay sense is Maria because this doesnât personally affect her, but still. Itâs boring to watch and offers no true exploration into the charactersâ feelings outside hopelessness. We donât see them talk about the story or try to debate about it. Whether Oz can ever be trusted again or not. Whether they feel like there are some legit points both for and against Oz. They donât talk about finding out the origin of the world or about Salem. There was so much room for so much perspective and maybe V7 will go into that. But here? It just feels like a wasted opportunity.
IDK. I still enjoy the plot and it adds a lot of moral conflicts. Oz was wrong, but he also had his reasons. There is no right or wrong answer I donât think to any of Ozpinâs choices. Heâs trying to do the right thing, and thatâs not always the best thing or even the moral thing. Itâs complex stuff that can cause a lot of complex emotions. But it feels like itâs all meant to say that Oz was bad and there is no resolution or discussion about it by the end outside Oz helping Oscar land the jet. Can V7 fix that? Maybe, especially since the trailer hinted at the right thing vs best thing dilemma. But as far as this volume goes, it was good, but could have been better.
#3. Caroline Cordovin
Cordovin sucks. Big time. I admit she was amusing in her debut episode, but that was it. Cordo os, overall, just a stingy and arrogant old woman. She isnât funny. She isnât interesting. She pretty much exists to be another âAtlas people suckâ character, especially with her remark at Blake. Now I know that she was meant to be a minor antagonist, and thatâs fine. But she went overboard and got the mech out when there were probably better ways of dealing with the heist peacefully. In fairness to her, the good guys canât explain why they need to go to Atlas so I donât blame her for trying to stop them. But with a huge-sized mech meant to deal with large Grimm? Really?
But really, none of this would have mattered to me⊠if it werenât for the ending. Cordovinâs shift is out of nowhere. She has no epiphany. She never really accepts that this is her fault. We never see her viewpoint shift. And as such, her turn was utterly unprovoked. But most of all⊠she gets away with it. She gets away with endangering Argu. She gets away with her reckless endangerment. She gets away with escalating the situation unecesarially. Sheâs going to fudge her report, so Atlas wonât ever know about it. That is what I hate the most, she didnât get punished for her actions whatsoever.
Still, unlike Cardin, she had a purpose and unlike him and the Fennec Twins, she wasnât around for very long. As such, she isnât the worst villain. But unless itâs to show that sheâs been stripped of her rank, I donât really ever want to see or hear from her again⊠her and Mariaâs bickering was funny though. Iâll give them that.
#2. Lack of Oscar Development
I talked about this in V4, but this was the boiling point for people I think. Oscar is, sadly, underdeveloped. V4 had to rush through his intro and getting him to Mistral, which is a consequence of the separate plotline. V5 was better as he gelled well with the cast, got some training and learned to sue his AUra, and we learned a bit more about how his and Ozâs bonding worked. Itâs still rushed, but hey unlike Ruby he got an actual payoff. Plus thereâs an emphasis that he made a choice to be there both in his talk with Ruby and when he was faced with Hazel. Itâs not a lot, but better than V4 and again, we had a payoff that felt earned,
V6 though⊠not so much. We see Oscar struggling with keeping control and his growing fear of not being the same after the merger is complete. Itâ super understandable and when he nears having a panic attack in Chapter 4, you really feel for him. They do a very good job of getting you to feel bad for this kid, especially in CHapter 8 when Jaune loses it and slams him into the wall out of anger at Ozpin. He snaps out of it and is immediately remorseful, but it was still utterly wrong to do that to Oscar. Qrow was also pretty horrible, but Iâll get to that later. Point is, this kid is scared, being unfairly punished for things that he didnât do, and is probably about to have an identity crisis. So him going missing? It makes perfect sense.
But there lies the issue. He goes missing⊠and when we see him again, thatâs the end of his arc. We donât see him sort through his emotions. We donât see him talk with anyone or with Oz. Iâm glad that Oscar made his choice to stay committed and I love his new look. But we donât get to experience it with him. He feels alienated from the main cast and I think thatâs because we have so many characters. Some are gonna have to be shafted, but Oscar had an on-going arc and shouldnât have been. Itâs the same thing with Grif in RvB17, where his character arc was ongoing but got shafted due to both episode count and character amount. But with Oscar, itâs even worse as heâs still fairly new and is Ozâs host. He should be more important than he is. Not more than RWBY, ut heâs pretty much just a tagalong out of there because he has Oz in his brain. Not because of his own character.
This has been a pretty vocal complaint. Iâm hoping that CRWBY is going to try more in V7. Maybe have Oscar enroll at Atlas or something and get some Huntsman training. Iâm not sure what they can do, but I think itâs time that they do at least something. Because next to Nora, Oscar is the most under-developed character, and he really should not be.Â
But hey, at least I still liked Oscar during the volume. Unlike a certain little birdie... on that note!
#1. Qrowâs Development
I did not like Qrow in this volume. At all. Now his attitude after the Oz reveal? Understandable. I think that Qrow is gonna be what Blake was to me in V4. Me hating how the character acted, but when I go back Iâll feel better about it since theyâll bounce back now that theyâre past the lowest point. And to be fair in the final few episodes, Qrow got better and I felt more sympathetic when he was clearly having a Summer flashback. Plus, again, I get it. He trusted Oz for so long and found out that he was lied to all along. Everything that he worked for? Amounted to nothing. Any worth that it gave him after being marked as unlucky? That amounted to nothing. Him turning to drink himself stupid? Makes sense and it was good to finally delve into the negative parts of his drinking. Everything with Qrow makes sense.
The problem is very simple. Itâ all due to one scene. Had they cut this out, I would be able to look past it. What scene is that?
âDonât lie to him Ruby, Weâre better than that.â
That killed any chance of me sympathizing with Qrow that the volume had. Ruby is trying to comfort Oscar, telling him that he isnât just some vessel for Ozpin. I know that Qrow was upset. I mean he outright punched Oscar, which yeah it was aimed at Oz, but that also didnât help. But that just felt unnecessarily cruel. Worst? He never apologizes for it like Jaune did with how he acted. Qrow is just overall useless, drinking himself stupid in Brunswick and just angrily giving up after Cordo refused them entry. Again, I get why. But I just cannot feel bad for him when heâs being such a downer and an asshole. Not even Ruby calling him out did anything until he began to flip out when the plan started to not go according to plan. Which by then⊠it felt too little, too late.
I donât know. Itâs like I said, I get it. But anytime that Qrow was on screen, it brought things down for me. I think that maybe they went a little too far with it, especially with the jab at Oscar. Iâm glad that heâs on the right path now, and I assume that V7 will help make me like him again. But for now? I really did not like it, and it is my least favorite thing about V6.
And with that, the Dislikes posts are all done! Yay! One more post to go: the Likes post! I hope that you all enjoyed this post, and thank you for reading~!
