COVID still rages, and the Biden administration isn’t helping - Published Jan 6, 2024
Readers who bristled at my assertion roughly a year ago — when the term “post-pandemic” was used a lot more cautiously than it is now — that we should still be masking really won’t like this: We should still be wearing masks indoors, because the COVID-19 pandemic still rages. And, as a physician writing on The Times’ op-ed page makes clear, the Biden administration isn’t helping.
The numbers of new infections and hospital admissions are sobering: Wastewater data indicate that the JN.1 variant of COVID-19 is infecting about 2 million Americans every day, making this surge second in prevalence only to the Omicron wave that hit in 2021 and 2022. Thanks to vaccines, the Omicron peak was less deadly than the wave that hit in late 2020 and early 2021, when mask mandates and social distancing were still our primary weapons against COVID-19 and inoculation was only beginning.
Even though the Omicron wave for most people marks the beginning of the “living with this disease” phase of COVID — where we forgo mitigation and accept the risks of infection by a survivable virus — large groups of people fared worse than ever. You know who did really poorly? Cancer patients, who died at a higher rate than during any previous surge. With compromised immune systems, they benefit more from mitigation measures such as masking than vaccination, but by the time Omicron rolled around many of us had grown tired of covering our faces and keeping our distance.
For most people, the price of an Omicron infection was mild illness and possibly long COVID; for cancer patients, it was a higher likelihood of dying.
As for long COVID — when crippling symptoms persist for months or even years after infection — it’s hard to quantify the price to society from millions of people walking around with brain fog and fatigue for interminable periods, not to mention the increased risk of heart disease and stroke long after infection. Deciding to live with COVID doesn’t mean any of this goes away, if by “living with COVID” you mean refusing to wear a high-quality mask.
Writing on our op-ed page, Dr. Eric J. Topol — whose work communicating the risks of unfettered virus circulation I consider indispensable — reminds us of the damage this JN.1 surge does to people without fully functioning immune systems, and the need of the government to continue developing vaccines that deliver better protection from COVID variants. He ends his piece, appropriately, by criticizing the Biden administration’s complacency:
“It’s crickets from the White House on COVID now, with no messaging on getting the updated booster or masking. The Biden administration has done far too little to accelerate research on effective treatments for long COVID.
“This passivity reinforces the illusion that the pandemic is behind us when it’s actually raging. And this season will be followed by a more quiescent period, which will, once again, lull us into thinking the pandemic is over. But there is no getting over it until we recognize reality and double down on the research that will allow us to block infections and virus spread, and achieve lasting, variant-proof immunity.”
As we head towards this year's election, remember just how much pain and suffering Biden's inaction on covid has caused and continues to cause. There are several candidates running whose covid policy is light years away from Biden's. Vote for what you believe in, not out of fear. Do everything you can to make a better future instead of stifling better for maybe perhaps kinda not as bad (for you personally based on vibes).

this might be a bit late but it’s just so perplexing and interesting to me how tkers a) have an absurd level of influence on the entire fandom and b) are legitimately much more insane than most delusional shippers even larries
as someone who was a tween when shipping really started to become a thing on the internet its fascinating (and disturbing) to see how it has gone from a casual and harmless “wow they look good together and have chemistry i want to see more of that” to “here is an entire dissertation’s worth of bogus theory about a same-sex pairing despite me being ragingly homophobic and probably mysoginistic.”
how it went from an admiration of chemistry and attraction to actual clinical delusion in a matter of years needs to be studied.
anyhow, i was thinking about all of the discourse surrounding jimin, jk, and the buddy system and am shocked by a couple of things. first, the complete undermining of their friendship despite them being ridiculously close for years. whether you like their dynamic or not it’s literally impossible to deny that jk and jimin have been thick as thieves for (at least) the past 5 or 6 years. I became an army in 2019 so it has always been obvious to me that they are extremely close. sure, you can make the argument that they didn’t “hang out” as much during 2023 but there’s still a considerable amount of interactions between them, much more than most of the other members who no army second guesses how close they are (the biggest example being jimin and taehyung who we literally only saw interact towards the end of the year).
second is how people literally pretend taennie never happened. hell, i think more people believe the blurry jk apartment video than they believe th and jn we’re in a real relationship for almost 2 years. there’s actual pictures of him on her BED with her kitty (a literal one) and you’ll still see majority of armys act like it never happened. yes, their privacy was horribly invaded but everyone knows damn well that is not the reason why most armys choose to ignore that relationship and then go and gush about him and IU.
though these two things might seem unrelated, i think both of these narratives that have always been pushed by tkers and have successfully crossed over to supposedly non-shipper armys and demonstrate just how influential tker theory is on the fandom.
this is exactly why i won’t really sweat over whatever a tkker says. if taehyung was in a long-term relationship for years that is confirmed by DOZENS of personal pictures through different dates, months, and locations but they still want to deny it… there’s simply nothing to reason with there. its just a waste of time and space. there’s a chance jikook have not been or are not more than close friends but there’s no chance th was with anyone other than jennie for the past 2 years in what is looked like the most serious relationship he’s ever had.
i feel bad for him too even if i feel he sometimes stokes the flames of shippers. imagine breaking up w your most serious partner ever, grieving that relationship AND your normal life since you’ll soon be part of the military for 2 years and all the while your “fans” are picking apart and making up insane theories about you and your friend.
I agree with most of what you say anon.
Of course we can't know for sure what the nature of jkks relationship last year was but I'm way more inclined to believe that their bond is still going as strong as it was before not just because of the buddy system news but purely because the ease and doting nature of the interactions we saw last year has remained the same.
And you're right, nothing will ever convince tkkrs to really just see the truth for what it is. There's always an alternative explanation, an alternative enemy to set your eyes on, an alternative ploy by the company to break the tkkr spirit. It's quite ridiculous. I think the worst thing with the taennie situation was that the whole 'It's an edit!! It's an impersonator!! It's a PR move by Jen/nie!!" Was that it wasn't just tkkrs buying into this. It was a majority of armys. The general fandom now looks back on taennie as 'a conspiracy to defame tae (except armys and blinks were the only ones who thought that these two adult humans possibly dating would be defamatory to either of them).
I legit had a very close irl army friend, whose not a shipper but still a pretty dedicated fan get into an argument with me because I told her that ppls reaction to tae dating was ridiculous. She word to word reiterated all the bs tkkr theories I had seen floating around and was unwilling to consider the possibility of them being made up conspiracies. I was genuinely surprised because she is generally very chill about these discourses but I guess the need to believe he wasn't dating a BP member took precedent over what the reality really was ??
Either way, it'll be interesting to see how they behave post 2025. I doubt they're going to calm down anytime soon with the jikook travel show on it's way. It's going to feed their theories as much as it's going to entertain the rest of us I'm afraid.

First, i want to apologize in advance for bad grammar and long paragraphs . I am not a writer, but instead a rambler at heart <3 some of this is just me straight up screaming LMAO
ALSO SPOILERS FOR THE EXTRA STORY OF PSYCHICS 1 N 2
I will not really be talking about the anime , since the anime covers most of the manga but is really quick and cuts some scenes (that i honestly thought were the funniest but it may be that i havent seen em before thst makes it funny) so i will peimarily be using the manga and novels (Extra Story of Psychics 1 and 2) as references .
Its in total agreement that saiki is a toootal tsundere, or at least i prefer kuudere for him (tsunderes are often aggressive or soft and generally alternating, whereas kuuderes are cynical and appear emotionless but of course have a soft side . Its just behavior difference but still makes a difference jn my heart <3) and of course what with it being confirmed By him in the manga its like Duh. But we dont necessarily see his soft side ? Bc of course we know his 'soft side' is generally sheep herding his friends and caring for their well being, but he doesnt explicitly like ,, say it . And im not counting what he said at the volcano and also i sort of rely on words so having a BOOK of words that i can grab at and string along to my brain is SO good for me honestly dude i love the books so unibelievebly much
Of course, like in any good saiki media the first chapters are generally getting caught up in his friends shenanigans. I was so delighted to note that it was all in perspective of saiki himself ! The first pov!! I usually dont like the first perspective , but in novels its more expected and also its saiki! (Im insane) anyways , we cant really rely on saiki as an output of his emotions to the reader bc hes an unreliable narrator, he doesn't necessarily speak out his emotions or show them that much .
Anyways, besties being besties !! Saiki quite literally follows his friends around . Everywhere . It still amuses me that even though he can just Teleport away when theyre not looking and they wouldnt find it super suspicious (hes done it before in the manga im like 80% sure) he still hangs out with them and now , in the last chapter of the first novel, we know why !! He usually says its an obligation or a social thing in a typical tsundere fashion , but in the last chapter he feels . Sad . THAT SHIT CAUGHT ME SO OFF GAURD . In this chapter , he stays home due to a premonition of his house being on fire . He takes a nap and wakes up to see kaidou and nendou hanging in his room, saying that Saikis mom let them in while she went out . They ask if hes sick and then go cook ramen for him , and he uses clairvoyance to make sure they dont set his kitchen and then his house on fire (being paranoid after the premonition, and end up caring for his friends safety) and afterwards he ends up esting their ramen and tries to send them home . He ends up getting another premonition in thst moment (doesnt explicitely say it to the readers yet), has seconds of the ramen (bc it wasnt bad) and then his friends go home, stepping on a cigarette bud that would have started the fire.
One thing that gets me when i read this chapter is that after the second premonition, he could have still sent them home ! He now knew the cause (that he now revealed) and he couldve nipped the cigarette himself but instead he lets fate do what it does best and they leave later and step on the cigarette then . Its so interesting ! And !!! Right after that, he claims he felt empty, that his room felt larger and more quiet . Of course, in his typical fashion he tries to reassure himself thst this is what he Wanted, and that he should feel happy that he could have peace and (mainly) quiet in his house now but he just . Doesnt . He says he feels lonely . And he explains thst in elementary and middle school he never had people check up on him at home, and thus he preferred the quiet. He is literally defending himself against his OWN FEELINGS . Oh my GOD that shit made me want to CRY . I feel mang emotions a lot of the time and THAT ? THAT WHOLE SEGMENT AT THE BOTTOM OF WHAT FEELS LIKE A BOTTOMLESS PIT OF LONELINESS WHEN YOUR FRIENDS LEAVE ? THAT MADE ME WANT TO CRY!! And even !! At the end, he says "I start reading a manga in my quiet room." OH MY GOD NO FUCKIN WAY .... first , he reiterates that his room is quiet ! Second, he says he starts reading a manga and considering that nendou had bought a manga for him and then gave him said manga when he first woke up, i like to think that he started reading the manga that nendou gave him !! This is SO important to me because hes being VULNERABLE !! In the manga, He never really expresses negative emotions towards the thought of his friends leaving, infact many a time he tries to play it off as a relief (he sucks at playing it off though) , so the fact that hes being OPEN about his feelings to readers about these emotions of a sort of lasting and lingering and Yearning and the fact that its Most Likely (im unsure but for now i will say that it IS) canon!! Hes so silly !!! My silly little guy! He literally says his friends are destined to be there with him!! Thats crazy!! And he proves it in the next volume !
Moving onto the next book :D first , i want to address toritsuka . Though he is fucking crazy , its important to note that saiki Still cares for him !! In the book, first chapter in pov of toritsuka, reita says that saiki looks at him with pity several times and even in saikis pov at the end he feels bad that toritsukas luck is so shit bc his gaurdian spirit(nendous dad) is never around, and even debates talking to the guy . He feels genuine pity for toritsuka , so i cant say saiki is cruel or a distrustful guy bc LOOK AT HIM!! Caring for his buddies !! Even the less honourable and more crazy ones !!! :DD
Back on topic with saiki n his friends! The last 3(or 2 n a half??) chapters are all for one arc !! THE MOST SILLY ARC ! You have probably read it and i dont want to repeat summaries of chapters if yall have, so ill spare yall the big picture!! The chapter thst makes me want to swoon so Badly is the interlude, where saiki is under the spell thing of the parallel! Saiki Kusuo, so hes supposed to be in a dream . In this dream, he is at a festival . No powers . No limiters . He doesnt even know Why he is think of powers or limiters . He thinks hes starting to have 8th grade syndrome . The FIRST person that his subconscious places into his mind to talk to him first was NENDOU! He doesnt know anyone at this festival, all he knows is that this random guy with his face blurred and black out recognized him and is dragging him to a nice hideout . And he lets him !!! Without realizing, in all his thinking, his body moves by itsef, similarly to the chapter "eat all you can!" In the first novel, he just follows and doesn't necessarily register his total surroundings (trusting his body to whoever is guiding him - he can easily fend off anyone that Tries to attack, but right now he is subdued and right now he is a sheep until he becomes a wolf) and he just thinks ! Eventually, nendou leads them to a place to watch the fireworks and is SO genuine with saiki that saiki cant help hut realize just who is leading him, who he trusts the most with his subconcious and honesltly probably dissociating body is Nendou, and he says to Us (or namely to himself but yk) that the person that will Always be there for him, esper or not, real or a dream, is Nendou.
FUCK. i FUCKING LOVE THEM . Especially considering that he had teleported to a parallel universe where Nendou didnt go to PK academy, it brings so much emotion to me knowing saiki truly believes thst he and nendou are like . A destined thing . This could be taken romantically or platonically . i dont think it matters that much, although its probably meant to be taken platonically. its so much more meaningful thst Nendou has changed the course of action in his life because he was just being Himself to Saiki, because no matter what in Every universe (namely the only two parallel universes that he has been to) Nendou has attatched himself to Saikis side and isnt really meant to let go . The only reason why this parallel universe is like the worst ever is Because the Saiki Kusuo in this universe gets Rid of nendou, and then all goes downhill. Our saiki originally thought it was a good idea(in the way that he actually was concerned on where nendou was the ENTIRE time he was in class) before he realized just how shit it is without the power of Friendship . AHHHH I LOVE THEM SO MUCH !!! This is what caused me to keep thinking of saiki and nendou, intimately familiar with each other and stuck with each other until the end of days, because saikis omnipresence is all for naught without nendous stupidity . In the last chapter, Saiki even says that a life Without nendo is one he doesnt prefer to be in . Saiki is on the Right track, the Most correct pathway ever , from saving the dog in chapter 1 and indulging in his friends antics in every media ever, he is Correct .
The moral of the story is now my head is exploding st the seams with need for more nendou and saiki twinning . I need more saiki listening to his friends, seemingly uncaring but then reciting their stories or giving them gifts based on what they ramble on unknowingly to him . I Need more nendou not really getting social cues, but understanding his Pals uncomfort in certain situations . I need them to be Best Friends . Twinning . Sillies !! I miss them so much and i just i just 💥 im really losing it i love saiki and his friends interacting , he Knows that he Cares and protects Them, but he is like almost Clueless that they love him back and he most definitely doesnt realize or believe he doesnt need Their protection (AND THEN NENDOU COMES ALONG AND JUST . OBLITERATES HIS WORLD VIEW(LAST CHAPTER IN MANGA))
New challenge !!! Take a shot everytime saiki says "my name is saiki kusuo, and i am an esper(psychic)/i have psychic powers(esp)" <3
#saiki k#kusuo saiki#the disastrous life of saiki k.#saiki and his friends#saiki no psi nan#saiki#nendou riki#nendou saiki k#shun kaidou#rambles#friendship#i actually went insane writing most of this LMAOO#this is not the first long rant ive done about a special interest of mine and it wont be the last#i love saiki and his friends#they need to hug more#dont read all of it if you dont want to my bad it gets more incoherent as you go along

Tamalog Day 6
We started the day at 7AM, i went to bed and before sleeping i fed everyone, Picochutchi wasn't very hungry but she was bored, so we went to the Arcade and played quite a lot, i played until her Happy bar was full, fed her a Cactus Steak and called the Sitter to look after her while i slept. On the Pix, Haretchi evolved to Himetchi, i was quite surprised cuz i spent all day yesterday waiting for her to evolve, but she only evolved this morning, but hey, no biggie. As soon as Himetchi woke up, we went to the restaurant and she had Pancakes for breakfest, then, we went to the Arcade and since today's theme is nature, we picked some fruits and she flew on the Rocket, i then called the Sitter and went on to wake up Milktchi. Milktchi was quite hungry early in the morning and only had one Cheese Dog left, so we went shopping and bought pretty much everything in the shop, she had 1 Curry and 1 Quiche, then i gave her some pets until she was Maxed out and went to sleep.
Waking up at 1PM, knowing two Tamas were safe with the Sitter, i went straight to the Smart to check on Milktchi, she was Sick, i became extremely worried since i thought i had miscalculated something and y'know, care mistakes are a bad sign, so i went to look and apparently it was due to poop, though her fondness meter was pretty low, enough for her to be sad at the top right corner, her food meter was as 3/6, so i believe her sickness was really due to her pooping while i slept and i took too long to clean it, gotta watch out for that. The rest of the afternoon was pretty chill, i gave them food whenever they were hungry, played a bit with each of them and did my daily prize draw which Himetchi got 1st place and won 200G, we also explored on the Pix and Tama Searched on the Uni, making really good progress on both of em, i also cooked a Hotdog on the Pix using my leg and the arm of a chair, i am trying to take my time with the Pix's features, cooking one food a day and trying to explore once at different locations to also take some photos of many places with different Tamas, it's been really fun. Picochutchi said 2 days jn a row that the Antenna is working fine which is great, i wonder what would happen if it didn't work, she sang a song for me at 5PM which is just too cute and i love it, we also went to the garden where Rinsetchi was hanging around, she played with it a bit and them went on with her day. Milktchi went to TamaWork and did some dancing since we blew all her Gotchi Points with food, and having the money to restock when she goes out of food is a strategy i often employ, just making sure i don't have her eating Onirigi all day cuz i was too lazy to play at the arcade that day, i also discovered today (about 4 months of running the Smart every day mind you) that there IS a Sitter option on the Smart, it's the second option in the Care menu, 'Rusuban' which means roughly 'House-sitting', and oh boy, do i feel bad i didn't know about that sooner.
Come night time, Picochutchi went into the tamaverse, displayed her new outfit and played the first match of the Wave Riding event playing for the Macarón team, which first impressions are really good, probably my favorite TamaVerse game since Dragon Jump, and we placed 1st baby oh yeah, after that we gave our Tama Friends some hearts i left her to do whatever cuz she was doing good already. Himetchi was okay so i let her just chill a bit, just gave her a bath and she cleaned the house, when i least expected it, she went to sleep. Apparently the Pix works from 7AM to 8PM, which aye, fair enough, it has too many things to do so i don't mind them going to sleep pretty early, better too cuz less battery usage i guess? idk. Milktchi had more Curry and some Nikujoga, used the Cleaning Robot to tidy up the house and took a bath, after that she asked me for help to fall asleep and went to sleep. Before going to sleep i fed Picochutchi some ham sandwiches and just like the others, gave her a bath and cleaned the house, she then just went to sleep peacefully probably feeling like the MVP of the day, as she was the number 1 Wave Rider for this Tama Day.

To that anon who simply downplayed taedo friendship.....
First this is a personal blog by a person who stan dy as their bias and even considering ty as his second boyfriend and you came here to talk some ridculous thing about taedo....wow you are a brave one though...
Secondly yes....everyone can express their view but ordering what to do or not do is something you shouldn't talk about...you dont have that kind of right....you were rude..
Secondly when you point out something please do it with evidences..let take a look ty how many times he mentioned dy in his speech is it becoz jn is his head full time??? and who said he is satisfied when dy said ty is cool?? Cant you see the smile everytime ty talk about dy? Whome ty wanted to get a back hug from and wanted to hear i love you from?..did he ask jn??not it is from dy right?....leave it did you watch the latest NCT show where dy and woo interviewed ty? Did you see ty's look or not? Wasn't he upset when dy said he is leaving?? And you saying dy act strange around ty? That's why woo said dy is going to treat ty after all music show ends??? Mygoodness how can you even talk about taedo when you cant see these small but sweet interaction of 2 bestfriends whom they consider as their emotional pillar?..
And lastly I am not trying to say johnny is not ty's bestfriends list...yes he is...like huh nim said they both need attention and comfort and they can give it to each other...but at some point they really need dy to fill them up and that's where dy stand for both of them...just appreciate their friendship and wish them to get their bond strong for a long long long period....be happy all....
I have doubts people like that anon stay long enough to read the feedback.
The tone of the message was polite enough for tumblr standarts, that's why I replied. I receive worse "scathing criticism" from Jaeyong shippers (I delete them).
People tend to notice and remember only things that align with their view on things. Taeyong constantly talking about Doyoung will be ignored, words "I miss you" by Tae left on Do's IG turned into Doyoung avoiding Taeyong, Tae developing friendships with SM's producers explained as Tae not needing Do anymore.
Secondly, people have tendency to succumb to the opinion of the majority. Therefore, a skewed perception can be formed if a fan doesn't leave his/her Do-hater or JohnDo/JaeYong info-bubble and eco-chamber.
I guess, the proclivity to make everything black and white also plays a role. If there is a perception of JohnDo being under "attack" (the anon missed me using words "best friend, cherish, support" and concentrated on "both need Do more"), than a retaliation with escalation follows. The threat needs to be punished and eliminated (in this case Doyoung and me). I'm disgraced by being called "you shippers" (the negative connotation is obvious) and Doyoung painted as a ex-friend who abandoned Taeyong. TaeDo can't be simply left as positive or neutral.
Anyway. I reply to such messages in a harsher tone than usual to stop others from wanting to fall in step and to feel deserved backlash themselves. I don't get really disturbed.
And the only real threat to TaeDo is Peaches, haha.

LK 18:1-8
Jesus told his disciples a parable
about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
He said, “There was a judge in a certain town
who neither feared God nor respected any human being.
And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’
For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her
lest she finally come and strike me.’”
The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night?
Will he be slow to answer them?
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
***
FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.” Luke 18:6–8
It’s interesting that Jesus uses the example of a dishonest judge to illustrate the importance of praying to God, calling out to Him day and night for justice. As the parable goes, this judge cared little about a widow in his town who continually came to him asking for a just decision. He felt as though she was continually bothering him. Because she was so persistent, the judge thought to himself, “…because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.” Jesus’ conclusion from this parable is quoted above.
The simple lesson we ought to learn from this parable is that we must be persistent in prayer. God will always answer our prayers, seeing to it that “justice is done” speedily. But many people have prayed and prayed and prayed for some situation, prayed even for justice, and it appeared that God did not answer their prayer. Thus, some may question the promise of Jesus that persistent prayer will always be answered and justice always be rendered.
If this is your experience, it is essential that you remind yourself of two things. First, Jesus’ words are true. When we persevere in prayer and trust in God, He hears us and answers. This is our Lord’s unwavering promise. But secondly, the “justice” that God delivers may often be different than the justice we expect. It may be that we want someone to pay for a wrong they did to us, but after praying fervently, our expectation is not met by our Lord. For this reason, it is essential that we know that God answers every prayer we pray, but in accord with His perfect will and wisdom. Therefore, God’s view of justice at times may be very different than ours. At times, His justice is satisfied by His invitation to us to show mercy in abundance. True mercy always satisfies justice.
Take, for example, the case of someone speaking in a rude manner to you. If you offer that situation to our Lord, He will enter in and provide His grace for you to deal with it in accord with His will. Perhaps He will soften the other person’s heart so that they apologize, or perhaps, if they don’t apologize and their heart is not softened, then God’s answer to your prayer will be to give you the grace of humility so that you can love that person despite their unrepentance. Regardless of the way our Lord intervenes, the fact remains that He will intervene and enable you to fulfill His perfect will. If, however, your prayer is that the person be held accountable and condemned, then you are trying to tell God what to do, and He will not accede to your request. All of our prayer must ultimately be for the fulfillment of God’s perfect will in accord with His wisdom.
Reflect, today, upon how completely you trust in God. Do you know, with certainty, that He will answer every prayer that you fervently pray with faith in accord with His divine will? Believing this is freeing and enables you to live more fully in union with Him. If there is some issue with which you struggle right now, even some apparent injustice, then entrust it to our Lord, day and night without ceasing, and know that His grace will guide you as He answers you in accord with His will.
Let's pray ...
My all-wise Lord, Your will is perfect in all things, and You always bestow Your grace upon me when I pray without ceasing. Please give me a trusting Heart, dear Lord, so that I will never waver in my hope that You will always answer my prayers in accord with Your will. Jesus, I trust in You.

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Margaret of Scotland
(1045 – November 16, 1093)
Saint Margaret of Scotland’s Story
Margaret of Scotland was a truly liberated woman in the sense that she was free to be herself. For her, that meant freedom to love God and serve others.
Not Scottish by birth, Margaret was the daughter of Princess Agatha of Hungary and the Anglo-Saxon Prince Edward Atheling. She spent much of her youth in the court of her great-uncle, the English king, Edward the Confessor. Her family fled from William the Conqueror and was shipwrecked off the coast of Scotland. King Malcolm befriended them and was captivated by the beautiful, gracious Margaret. They were married at the castle of Dunfermline in 1070.
Malcolm was good-hearted, but rough and uncultured, as was his country. Because of Malcolm’s love for Margaret, she was able to soften his temper, polish his manners, and help him become a virtuous king. He left all domestic affairs to her, and often consulted her in state matters.
Margaret tried to improve her adopted country by promoting the arts and education. For religious reform she encouraged synods and was present for the discussions which tried to correct religious abuses common among priests and laypeople, such as simony, usury, and incestuous marriages. With her husband, she founded several churches.
Margaret was not only a queen, but a mother. She and Malcolm had six sons and two daughters. Margaret personally supervised their religious instruction and other studies.
Although she was very much caught up in the affairs of the household and country, she remained detached from the world. Her private life was austere. She had certain times for prayer and reading Scripture. She ate sparingly and slept little in order to have time for devotions. She and Malcolm kept two Lents, one before Easter and one before Christmas. During these times she always rose at midnight for Mass. On the way home she would wash the feet of six poor persons and give them alms. She was always surrounded by beggars in public and never refused them. It is recorded that she never sat down to eat without first feeding nine orphans and 24 adults.
In 1093, King William Rufus made a surprise attack on Alnwick castle. King Malcolm and his oldest son, Edward, were killed. Margaret, already on her deathbed, died four days after her husband.
Reflection
----------
There are two ways to be charitable: the “clean way” and the “messy way.” The “clean way” is to give money or clothing to organizations that serve the poor. The “messy way” is dirtying your own hands in personal service to the poor. Margaret’s outstanding virtue was her love of the poor. Although very generous with material gifts, Margaret also visited the sick and nursed them with her own hands. She and her husband served orphans and the poor on their knees during Advent and Lent. Like Christ, she was charitable the “messy way.”

Friday of the Fourth Week of Easter
Readings of Friday, April 26, 2024
Reading 1
ACTS 13:26-33
When Paul came to Antioch in Pisidia, he said in the synagogue: “My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent. The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath. For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death, and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are now his witnesses before the people. We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our fathers he has brought to fulfillment for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.”
Responsorial Psalm
PS 2:6-7, 8-9, 10-11AB
R./ You are my Son; this day I have begotten you. or: R./ Alleluia.
“I myself have set up my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.” R./ You are my Son; this day I have begotten you. or: R./ Alleluia.
“Ask of me and I will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession. You shall rule them with an iron rod; you shall shatter them like an earthen dish.” R./ You are my Son; this day I have begotten you. or: R./ Alleluia.
And now, O kings, give heed; take warning, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice before him; with trembling rejoice. R./ You are my Son; this day I have begotten you. or: R./ Alleluia.
Gospel
JN 14:1-6
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Mon Mar 25th, 2024 ... Monday of Holy Week, Year B
Reading 1
________
Is 42:1-7
Here is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one with whom I am pleased,
Upon whom I have put my Spirit;
he shall bring forth justice to the nations,
Not crying out, not shouting,
not making his voice heard in the street.
A bruised reed he shall not break,
and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,
Until he establishes justice on the earth;
the coastlands will wait for his teaching.
Thus says God, the LORD,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spreads out the earth with its crops,
Who gives breath to its people
and spirit to those who walk on it:
I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice,
I have grasped you by the hand;
I formed you, and set you
as a covenant of the people,
a light for the nations,
To open the eyes of the blind,
to bring out prisoners from confinement,
and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.
Responsorial Psalm
_______________
Ps 27:1, 2, 3, 13-14
R. (1a) The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life's refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
When evildoers come at me
to devour my flesh,
My foes and my enemies
themselves stumble and fall.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Though an army encamp against me,
my heart will not fear;
Though war be waged upon me,
even then will I trust.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Verse Before the Gospel
________________
Hail to you, our King;
you alone are compassionate with our faults.
Gospel
_________
Jn 12:1-11
Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany,
where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served,
while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.
Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil
made from genuine aromatic nard
and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair;
the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
Then Judas the Iscariot, one of his disciples,
and the one who would betray him, said,
"Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages
and given to the poor?"
He said this not because he cared about the poor
but because he was a thief and held the money bag
and used to steal the contributions.
So Jesus said, "Leave her alone.
Let her keep this for the day of my burial.
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."
The large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came,
not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus,
whom he had raised from the dead.
And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too,
because many of the Jews were turning away
and believing in Jesus because of him.

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
Today we start one of the most important weeks in our church. A week that is full of suffering and pain yet equally full of promises and hope. This is a week where we will see the cross, as a symbol of great suffering, be then transformed to a symbol of hope, of trust, and, above all, of love. On the surface, the readings for today conveyed to me two major themes: acknowledging the Lord as our Savior and recognizing what is important in the here and now. The second theme is especially significant given what is to transpire during this week.
The first reading from Isaiah sets the stage and prepares us for the coming of Christ while the responsorial psalm clarifies the Lord as our Savior and our need to let go of our fears – we are safe in the arms of God:
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
The story of Mary anointing the feet of Jesus is one that has always intrigued me. Mary “gets it” – she understands the value of Christ in her life right there and then. We have other readings where Mary sits at his feet and allows herself to be completely present to Jesus and soaks in his words and the gift of him. She does not allow herself to be distracted or try to multi-task around him. Here as she pours her precious perfume on his feet, she conveys that she recognizes the value of Christ and that honoring him is more important than riches or anything else. Judas, of course, has some ulterior motives and is quick to chastise.
Whenever I read this passage, I have to reflect upon whether I am keeping “first things, first.” Do I allow the busyness of the world to overshadow what is most valuable to me and my salvation? Of course, there are commitments to be fulfilled and work to be done (especially if we wish to be paid!). I am constantly challenged to keep my priorities in mind and to balance my life. It is so easy for me to be all consumed with the demands of work and my profession. I struggle at times in the choices I make and need to consciously remind myself of what is most important in the grand scheme of life.
Another theme from these readings that “haunted” me and caused me to have some angst in writing is that of forgiveness. While that theme may seem hidden, the subtlety was there for me and kept causing me to come back to it and face it. It is critical to me where I am at this point in my life and maybe why it kept echoing that I must address it. All of what is to come this week and what Christ spoke of relates to forgiveness. God’s love for us is so great that he forgives us all our sins and symbolizes that love and forgiveness by giving us his only Son. It is the underlying point of all of this – Love and Forgiveness. I am well aware (reminded every time I pray the Our Father) that I must forgive if I am to expect forgiveness (and salvation). It seems for me that I can more easily forgive those who directly hurt me than those who hurt the ones I love. It is painful for me to see poor treatment of my loved ones – I feel enraged and indignant, I want to shake whoever is hurting them and tell them to stop. Yet, I know in my heart of hearts, I must pray for the person and forgive what has transpired and continues to transpire. I can only hope that God gives me that Grace to forgive and let go. It has been a real stress of late. Yet the fact remains that many times (too many times) as I turn on my car radio, the song that plays is Forgiveness by Matthew West (link below):
The words haunt me and remind me that forgiveness is the bottom line and if I want the rest that I must find a way to forgive and release myself. I will leave you with some of the words of this song (I skipped some verses because of space).
It’s the hardest thing to give away
And the last thing on your mind today
It always goes to those that don’t deserve
It’s the opposite of how you feel
When the pain they caused is just too real
It takes everything you have just to say the word…
Forgiveness, Forgiveness . . .
Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness
It’ll clear the bitterness away
It can even set a prisoner free
There is no end to what it’s power can do
So, let it go and be amazed
By what you see through eyes of grace
The prisoner that it really frees is you
Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Forgiveness, Forgiveness . . .
I want to finally set it free
So show me how to see what Your mercy sees
Help me now to give what You gave to me
Forgiveness, Forgiveness

My Good Friday of the Lord's Passion Daily Blessings
April 7, 2023
Be still quiet your heart and mind, the LORD is here, loving you talking to you...........
Good Friday of the Lord's Passion (Roman Rite Calendar) Lectionary 40, Cycle A
First Reading: Isaiah 52:13-53:12
See, my servant shall prosper, he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. Even as many were amazed at him -- so marred was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man--so shall he startle many nations, because of him kings shall stand speechless; for those who have not been told shall see, those who have not heard shall ponder it.
Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth; there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, nor appearance that would attract us to him.
He was spurned and avoided by people, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom people hide their faces, spurned, and we held him in no esteem.
Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; but the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all.
Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth.
Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away, and who would have thought any more of his destiny? When he was cut off from the land of the living, and smitten for the sin of his people, a grave was assigned him among the wicked and a burial place with evildoers, though he had done no wrong nor spoken any falsehood. But the LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity.
If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him.
Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear. Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked; and he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 31:2,6, 12-13,15-16, 17, 25
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."
Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:7-9
Brothers and sisters: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.
In the days when Christ was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
Verse before the Gospel: Philippians 2:8-9
"Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name."
**Gospel:
Jn 18:1—19:42
**Meditation:
Who can bear to look upon the bloodied cross where Jesus hung without shame or sorrowful grief, disbelief or reverent awe? The cross brings us face to face with Jesus' suffering. He was alone - all his disciples had deserted him except for his mother and three women along with John, the beloved disciple. And his death was agonizing and humiliating. Normally a crucified man could last for several days on a cross. Jesus' had already been scourged, beaten with rods, and a crown of thorns pressed into his skull. It is no wonder that he died mid-afternoon. Pilate publicly heralded Jesus "The King of the Jews" as he died upon the cross, no doubt to irritate and annoy the chief priests and Pharisees (John 19:19).
The King who ransoms us with his own life Jesus was crucified for his claim to be King. The Jews had understood that the Messiah would come as their king to establish God's reign for them. They wanted a king who would free them from tyranny and foreign domination. Many had high hopes that Jesus would be the Messianic king. Little did they understand what kind of kingship Jesus claimed to have. Jesus came to conquer hearts and souls for an imperishable kingdom, rather than to conquer perishable lands and entitlements.
Jesus' death on the cross defeated sin and death for us We can find no greater proof of God's love for us than the willing sacrifice of his Son on the cross. Jesus' parting words, "It is finished!" express triumph rather than defeat. Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit knowing that the strife was now over and the battle was won. Even on the cross Jesus knew the joy of victory. What the Father sent him into the world to do has now been accomplished. Christ offered himself without blemish to God and he put away sin by the sacrifice of himself (see Hebrews 9:24-26).
As we gaze on his wounds - we touch the scars of his resurrection While the close company of Jesus' disciples - his apostles - had deserted him and hid out of fear from the Jewish authorities, Jesus' mother and some of the women who were close to Jesus stood close to him while he hung upon the cross. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 A.D) in his sermon on John's passion account focuses on the gaze of the women who witnessed the shedding of his blood and the offering of his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world.
"As they were looking on, so we too gaze on his wounds as he hangs. We see his blood as he dies. We see the price offered by the redeemer, touch the scars of his resurrection. He bows his head, as if to kiss you. His heart is made bare open, as it were, in love to you. His arms are extended that he may embrace you. His whole body is displayed for your redemption. Ponder how great these things are. Let all this be rightly weighed in your mind: as he was once fixed to the cross in every part of his body for you, so he may now be fixed in every part of your soul." (GMI 248)
Augustine invites us to present ourselves before Jesus crucified who took our sins upon himself and nailed them to the cross. Through the eyes of faith we, too, gaze upon the bloodied body of our Redeemer who paid the price for our sins - and we touch the scars of his resurrection who defeated death for our sake so that we may know the victory of his cross and resurrection and receive the promise of everlasting life and glory with him in his kingdom.
The miracle of my salvation In the cross of Christ we see the triumph of Jesus over his enemies - sin, Satan, and death. Many Christians down through the centuries have sung the praises of the Cross of Christ. Paul the Apostle exclaimed, "But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Galatians 6:14).
Hear what Gregory Nazianzen (329-389 AD), an early church father and bishop of Constantinople, wrote about the triumph of Christ's exaltation on the cross:
"Many indeed are the wondrous happenings of that time: God hanging from a cross, the sun made dark and again flaming out (Luke 23:44, Mark 15:33); for it was fitting that creation should mourn with its creator. The temple veil rent (Matthew 27:51), blood and water flowing from his side (John 19:34): the one as from a man, the other as from what was above man; the earth shaken, the rocks shattered because of the rock (Matthew 27:51); the dead risen to bear witness to the final and universal resurrection of the dead (Matthew 27:52). The happenings at the sepulcher and after the sepulcher, who can fittingly recount them? Yet no one of them can be compared to the miracle of my salvation. A few drops of blood renew the whole world, and do for all men what the rennet does for the milk: joining us and binding us together. (On the Holy Pasch, Oration 45.1)
Rupert of Deutz (1075-1129), a Benedictine abbot and theologian, wrote: "The cross of Christ is the door to heaven, the key to paradise, the downfall of the devil, the uplifting of mankind, the consolation of our imprisonment, the prize for our freedom."
The throne of love and sign of God's mercy The Cross of Christ is the safeguard of our faith, the assurance of our hope, and the throne of love. It is also the sign of God's mercy and the proof of forgiveness. By his cross Jesus Christ has pardoned us and set us free from the tyranny of sin. He paid the price for us when he made atonement for our sins. The way to peace, joy, and righteousness in the kingdom of God and the way to victory over sin and corruption, fear and defeat, despair and death is through the cross of Jesus Christ. Do you follow the Lord Jesus in his way of the cross with joy, hope, and confidence?
Lord Jesus Christ, by your death on the cross you have won pardon for us and freedom from the tyranny of sin and death. May I live in the joy and freedom of your victory over sin and death.

idle speculation, don't take serious
Egyptian -jn- likened to Amazigh -yan-, the latter a verb meaning "say", and the pathway say -> aux is common, and very common in North Africa, and generally builds something like a consecutive mood or something. Like in analogy to Hebrew's vav-consecutive, which is pretty much and-verb, which got fossilized due to vowel outcomes. Not so much like what Spanish calls a consecutive.
The focus pronouns in many Afroasiatic languages look similar, though. They're generally built on a base like 2an- where 2 is a glottal stop. It was probably not complete when Afroasiatic broke up, though, because many languages build them radically differently - some from the stative pronoun series where the 1S is ~ku, some from the possessive pronoun series where the 1S is ~ni.
There's a hypothesis that maybe that's a relic of an old case system, and the ~ku series is like, the old ergative, while the ~ni series is the old absolute series. But Egyptian at least shows that the old series was like *jnk, *kw(t) *Tj(t), *sw(t) *sj(tt), and only during Middle Egyptian did the *ntk *ntT *ntf *nts replace the 2 and 3 persons. The old Egyptian kw Tj sw etc if anything was more likely the PAA absolute pronouns.
There's also like... I think some contemporary Arabics made new relative clause constructions out of the an base, to the point of creating new focus pronouns through analogy with mismatches with the focus pronoun endings and the developments in the possessives? I think? This was a twitter observation and the ephemerality of that platform means the details are lost to me. I noticed also in Jabalinya's post on Gurran Arabic, Razihit, and Central Sabatic the other day that the perfect suffixes look like Egyptian's statives.
The reason relative pronouns cross linguistically also come from wh- pronouns is due to the latter almost always being in focus. wh-movement is also common, because cross-linguistically we want to put focus near the complementizers, especially in C-first languages. The relative <--> focus gateway seems to be a thing. Tangentially, it's also kind of a thing that VSO languages lack copulas and similar things, making DP-DP a special predicate type instead of one that can be handled like transitive predicates. So, like
I wander if something like *ăn was already a relativizing complementizer in PAA. In Egyptian maybe due to phonetic weakness or something it ended up a second-slot particle like -ne? in Latin or many other such IE particles, and raised the verb: *ăn *săt'amă *pŭ -> *an *sat'aamaf > *sat'maanaf sdm.jn.f. (the j then shows that the vowel was long, the 1v2vv3 -> 1v23vv metathesis being caused by trying to preserve default stress I guess?) Then in just DP-DP sentences you'd have this awkward thing that can't stand on its own, and because the verbs were being reanalyzed as if nominative-ness is possession, maybe Ø-ăn-PRO became a thing that way and you get anaku, an(t?)aku, an(t?)aki, etc that -> jnk, (j)ntk, (j)ntT etc.
I'm not sure on the situation in Semitic at the time, but given how late Egyptian's seemed to have developed, assuming this was an Egyptian-internal thing related to their -jn- perfect, then maybe the an- pronouns are really one of those weird things, where, like, the ground work was done by a proto language but a daughter (Egyptian) ended up projecting it all over the region, like maybe PIE had the ḱ-k thing already and then Scythian or whatever spread satemization.
This also isn't necessarily incompatible with the hypothesis that it's related to Amazigh's -yan- "say" verb either. It could entirely be that say -> some kind of relativizing auxiliary verb and -> the conjugated verb turned into focus pronouns.

Thursday of the Second Week of Easter
Readings of Thursday, April 11, 2024
Reading 1
ACTS 5:27-33
When the court officers had brought the Apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, “We gave you strict orders did we not, to stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the Apostles said in reply, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”
When they heard this, they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death.
Responsorial Psalm
PS 34:2 AND 9, 17-18, 19-20
R./ The Lord hears the cry of the poor. or: R./ Alleluia.
I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. R./ The Lord hears the cry of the poor. or: R./ Alleluia.
The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth. When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. R./ The Lord hears the cry of the poor. or: R./ Alleluia.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him. R./ The Lord hears the cry of the poor. or: R./ Alleluia.
Gospel
JN 3:31-36
The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Mon Mar 25th, 2024 ... Monday of Holy Week, Year B
Reading 1
________
Is 42:1-7
Here is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one with whom I am pleased,
Upon whom I have put my Spirit;
he shall bring forth justice to the nations,
Not crying out, not shouting,
not making his voice heard in the street.
A bruised reed he shall not break,
and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,
Until he establishes justice on the earth;
the coastlands will wait for his teaching.
Thus says God, the LORD,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spreads out the earth with its crops,
Who gives breath to its people
and spirit to those who walk on it:
I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice,
I have grasped you by the hand;
I formed you, and set you
as a covenant of the people,
a light for the nations,
To open the eyes of the blind,
to bring out prisoners from confinement,
and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.
Responsorial Psalm
_______________
Ps 27:1, 2, 3, 13-14
R. (1a) The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life's refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
When evildoers come at me
to devour my flesh,
My foes and my enemies
themselves stumble and fall.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Though an army encamp against me,
my heart will not fear;
Though war be waged upon me,
even then will I trust.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Verse Before the Gospel
________________
Hail to you, our King;
you alone are compassionate with our faults.
Gospel
_________
Jn 12:1-11
Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany,
where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served,
while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.
Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil
made from genuine aromatic nard
and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair;
the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?

At Last.
As the week went on, the day of the mission got closer. Maverick was still determined to go, even after Y/N's protests and he still didn't tell her who all he's taking. Now they were all on the ship waiting for instructions on what was going on.
Phoenix and Bob were hardened close together, whispering something to each other. Hangman was talking with Coyote, Payback and Fanboy on how he was going on this mission as team leader, while Y/N and Rooster were standing in silence.
They kept a good distance between them as they didn't want anyone to know about them just yet. He could see that she was nervous, but he kept his silence as he didn't want to worry her more. Soon Maverick and the two admirals came in the room they were in.
Admiral Bates started "You all have been tranjng for 3 weeks for this particular mission, you've all masterde it, sk it shouldn't matter which one of you goes, but all of you should be ready to give it you best. The team will be lead by Captain Mitchell, since he's the one who finished in time. The rest of the team will be announce by Captain Mitchell."
Pete now stood jn front of Admiral Bates, looking at his pilots. "Phoenix and Bob, will be with me." They both looked at each other with an expression of excitement and fear. "Payback and Fanboy." They were the happiest. Pete then looked at two faces, Rooster and Sparrow, to decide who would be his wingman.
"And your wingman?" Questioned Admiral Bates. Hangman puffed his chest as if to say he knew he'd be the one.
"Rooster." Maverick said. Y/N was disappointed in herself, but went with his decision. Then Maverick said "The seconds will be Hangman and Sparrow."
With that he walked out with the Admirals. No one said a word at that moment. No sparky remark, no victory high fives, no whispers. Everyone just stood silently, looking at each other and then went about with their work.
As they were putting on their gear, Rooster pulled Y/N in another room, away from the rest of the gang.
"You good?" He asked.
"Yes, why won't I be?" She answered and asked.
"It's just your dad. I know yiu get worried about him." He answred.
"I am, a little, but I know he'll handle himself. I'm more worried about you though." She said.
"Why?"
"Because I'm not willing to loose you again." She said. "Just promise me you'll be safe."
"I will." He promised.
"Good." She nodded. "And remember, don't think, just do."
"Yes ma'am." He said pulling her in for a kiss. It was a soft one that didn't last long, but it was meaningful. When they pulled apart, he was resting his forehead on hers.
"Give em' hell." Was all she said.
----------------------------
As everyone qas standing on the deck, ready for take off, Y/N got a last glimpse of her father and Rooster before they were both off. She was scared of two things. The first being that they wouldn't make out alive. And the second being that they'd fight in the air.
"Copy. Faggers dexendinf below rader." Maverick's voice came through the radio. All the daggers went under the rader when the controller room said
"Daggers now below rader. Switching to e2 picture." It was official now.
"Here we go." Maverick started. "Enemy territory up ahead, picture in sixty seconds. Comanche picture."
"Picture clear, decision is yours."
"Copy." Maverick said in a few seconds. "Dagger attack." With that the missles went off. The tomahawk was airborne.
"Daggers assume attack position." Maverick said. "Time 2 minutes minutes 30 seconds set in three, two, one. Time set." He entered the valley.
"Time set." Phoenix and Bob entered the valley.
"Time set." Rooster entered the valley.
"Time set." Payback and Fanboy entered the valley. There was no turning back now.
Entering the valley they spotted a fe SAM'S which didn't go off, indicating they were under the rader. Maverick and Phoenix were going fast and way ahead of the others. But after a point Rooster slowed down.
"Rooster come on man. We gotta move." Y/N heard Payback say on the radio. But Rooster didn't buldge.
This went on for a few seconds, till Rooster whispered "Talk to me dad."
And just then Maverick spoke "Come on Rooster. Don't think, just do."
These words were all he needed to go fast. They quickly caught up to Maverick, Phoenix and Bob, who had completed their inverted dive and hit the target perfectly.
Next was Rooster's chance. They did an inverted dive and were ready to fire, but the laser wasn't working.
"I'm hoping in blind." Rooster said and took a perfectly shot.
"Bullseye." Fanboy said and then they were jn coffin conner. Maverick and Phoenix were already fighting all the missiles whe The other team reached.
There were smokes everywhere. They took down kne missile and another was already attacking. This went on for minutes until Rooster said "Shit, I'm out of flares."
"I got ya." Maverick said as he came behind Rooster and used his last flares to remove the missile.
"Mav look out." Shouted Bob as a missile came and hit his plane.
"Mav's hit." Phoenix said. "I repeat Maverick's down." Y/N's heart was pounding, one of her fears was coming true and she could do nothing about it.
"We have to go back." Phoenix said. "Come on Rooster."
"Yeah man, its of no use." Fanboy said.
"Yeah it is, Rooster said as he flew to the plane Maverick fell, despite the protests of his teammates. The rest of them had no other choice but to come back to the ship.
A few minutes later all communication was lost, Y/N had no idea where her father and boyfriend were and jf by some miracle they would make it out alive, she woul kill them.
Ten minutes and many requests later Y/N was still stuck on deck. Just when she was about to lose all hope, the control room said "Roosters becon is on."
"Then what's the problem?" Admiral Cyclone asked.
"He's super sonics sir."
He was alive, and there was a chance that Pete was too. This was all she needed.
"Sparrow, Hangman, we need you to go. There seem to be two enemy aircraftes chasing Rooster." Said Admiral Cyclone through the radio.
"Copy that." Hangman said, and they were airborne. By the time they reached Rooster's plane, in of the enemy's had already gotten a ton on them.
And just at the right time, Hangman blew that plane up. "Ladies and gentlemen this is your saviour speaking." He said, and Y/N heard Maverick chuckle through the radio.
But the foght wasn't over yet, there was still on more plane left which qas raking care of by Y/N. He was on her, no doubt, be she wasn't a Mitchell for no reason. Coping her dad, she performed a cobra maneuver getting a perfect shot.
"That's what we call a kill gentlemen." She said. She didn't dare look towards the two men in the F-14 Tomcat, because she did she wouldn't be able to hold back her tears.
Sparrow and Hangman landed easily, while Maverick was listing all the things wrong with their plane, and there seemed to be a lot. When all of them were on the ground everyone started cheering and celebrating.
Phoenix was the first one to walk up to Y/N and hug her.
"I'm gald you're safe Nat." Y/N said.
"I'm glad you are too." She went on to Bob, kissing him kn the cheeks making the guy flush.
Now Rooster was walking towards her. He could see she was not olease by what he had done and he only had one thing to say "I'm sorry."
"Taht doesn't fixe everything." She said.
"I know, I'm sorry." He said again taking her face in his hands and kissing her, regardless of people watching. This gesture made her melt.
"You know you can't always kiss me when I'm angry right?" She whisperd innhis ear.
"There's always sex dear." He whisperd back. She was flushed from this comment as he gave her a wink and turned around to hug Maverick.
Y/N was next to do that. But not before scolding her father for what he did and then thanking him for doing that, first bringing him back.
"We're gonna have a serious talk when we get back home young lady." He said in dad mode.
"Yes sir."
----------------------------
A few days later, Rooster, Y/N and Pete were all hardened jn his little workshop, figuring out how to fix his personal plane when Penny came out of the blue. Y/N hadn't see Pete like that in a long time, and she was happy that it was Penny. At last they were together.
"What do you say we have one of those?" Rooster cane up behind Y/N, who was working on the planes engine, and hel her by her waist.
"Teenagers?" She question still focused on her work.
"No. Kids." He turned her face towards himself. "You'd look good as a mom."
"And you'd loom good as a dad." Y/N whispered closing the gap between them. Just as their kiss deepened, Pete came back in with Penny.
"Ew not in front of me guys."
