film recs for comfort when feeling sad

mamma mia (108 mins.)

usually for me it’s enough to cheer me up or get my mind off sad things just to watch lighthearted films when i’m feeling down, and it’s always an added bonus if it’s a movie i have seen before - and i know your love for mamma mia is greater than that of anyone else i know so it came to mind first thing :) i also thought the music in the movie might be uplifting for the vibes and nostalgia ahh

20th century women (119 mins.)

because greta gerwig <3 and women <3 and both those things put together is comfort at its peak and it’s also said to be comforting, funny, and bittersweet all at once ??! one of my friends said it lit up their lives and yeah, i think you’d just like it maybe :)

bottoms (92 mins.)

this is the film by emma seligman that recently came out / is only out in select theaters but it’s essentially this silly fun campy stylish movie about bffs pj & josie starting a fight club to rizz cheerleaders lmfaoooo my description doesn’t sell it very well but! yes

the woman who ran (77 mins.)

full of women and cats (!!!) and just one of those quiet, simplistic films where the emotional undercurrent sneakily washes in

imagine me and you (93 mins.)

the og “never let your husband stop you from meeting your wife” film + cute romantic comedy!

café lumière (103 mins.)

a film where nothing really happens but whats cool about it is that it’s dedicated to yasujirō ozu (whose movie ‘good morning’ i considered adding to this as well, and maybe you’d like it too? :o) so it’s kinda in celebration of the routine and/or stillness of life and the beauty (and meaning) in ordinary moments

there are some really nice train and nature and city life shots as well that reminded me of you when i first watched so there’s that:) but just a caveat it’s either you might enjoy this or find it extremely boring btw hajshaja this also probably goes for most films on here bc i suck

that little miss sunshine meets the royal tenenbaums energy yessireerrrrr

cha cha real smooth (108 mins.)

i have honestly yet to watch this so i can’t give any real faithful summary but based on the premise and from what ive heard i think it might be a bit resonant for you? and maybe even be a little boost of serotonin?? will have to get back to u on this fs

scott pilgrim vs the world (113 mins.)

brie larson’s performance of black sheep is healing to the ears and soul ngl

luca (95 mins.)

this is a coming of age, animated movie that i think you’ll enjoy for a couple reasons! one is that it's a colorful, energetic slice of life movie. second is that even for a film that’s small in scale it navigates so much, like a lot of it is about identity and the anxiety and challenges of growing up and/or older, but is also about discovery and acceptance !! third it has so many heartfelt moments that almost reminds me of the last wish which i know you liked so :)

mystery train (106 mins.)

i was thinking a lot about what you said, that you liked films that are about the mundane, that don’t necessarily prioritize plot and action. hence why when mystery train made its way to me, i immediately thought of you :) knowing you enjoy wong kar-wai films, i think this will be one that you can’t miss! think of it like a more humorous and lighter chungking express <4

film recs for wallowing and/or Thinking when feeling sad

mistress america (84 mins.)

this one acts as a transition from the previous set of films to this new one in the sense it can technically be in either ??! but yes this is also a greta film :) it’s a bit weak in some parts of the film but has some heart in it too and some gut punchy scenes saurrr

tokyo.sora (127 mins.)

melancholy film about loneliness, friendship (or rather just connections in general), isolation, mental struggles, yknow all the depressing good stuff thrown in with really pretty visuals lol + i’d say there’s some sensitive scenes/topics here though so ! just a warning :)

columbus (105 mins.)

i havent finished the full thing yet, but there are scenes in this film where we get to just hear the birds, the cicadas, the score sweeping in as the conversation melts away, and there are these breathtaking shots of architecture and nature that just have this meditative, sweet, attentive feel to them

but i placed it on this list in particular because the characters and their flaws, arcs, and desires really drive the story. and kogonada somehow uses the sights and buildings in the film to be representative of the feelings and/or relevant to something internal within the characters and it makes all the emotional highs that much ?? better ? if that makes sense !! so yes that !! i think you’d really like this !!

la la land (129 mins.)

this is just if tbawy x blue lightning was a musical

sad and gay

frances ha (86 mins.)

sad and contemplative and Should have been gay (probably is anyway! we love subtext!)

my broken mariko (85 mins.)

a somber and sensitive rumination on grief, loss, and friendship - this one’s a bit on the heavier side so i perhaps only recommend this if you want something that fuels your sadness or if you want to maybe cry? but then i’d still advise to be careful bae

my life as a zucchini (66 mins.)

because who doesn’t want to cry over lumps of clay who just want to feel like they belong

i’d say this one is mostly for the vibes hahah like it has quite a skam feel to it that i think you’d enjoy. and i think on a bad day in a particular where you’re not feeling so great, this film could be one that helps you be a little invested in someone else’s thoughts, emotions, and life, and almost take a break from your own? :)

i know the opening’s meant to sound ridiculous but having been involved with a particularly dysfunctional orchestra between the first time i listened to gdańsk and the present day, this is just tame

happiest season (2020) thoughts (aka spoilers) under the cut

god i have so many thoughts & feelings but first and foremost, let me boldly and bravely say i was rooting for adultery the whole entire time.

fjkdghsd ok that sounds bad and i don’t condone adultery obviously (aside from hit the switch because i very much do in hts kurt and blaine’s case) but PLEASE. give me abby x riley over abby x harper any day!!!

i... hated harper. i understand her backstory and the reasons and motivations behind all of her decisions but asking abby to go back into the closest is already asking a lot (and she asked it at a point when abby couldn’t really say no! that’s manipulative! help!) but then to add on to it all of the other bullshit? honestly at times it felt like she was toying with her and using affection to distract her from how fucked up the whole thing was. and then SHE got mad at ABBY?

anyway listen i could go into that more but. lots of stuff about harper did not sit right with me despite understanding her. there’s a limit to how much that excuses how she behaved and what she expected of abby. also i deeply related to abby (maybe the first time that’s happened for me? like an, oh there’s me completely on my screen moment? that’s pretty big!) so i’m feeling sensitive and protective

anyway i need an entire movie about riley and her backstory like that is painful! and i just think that aubrey & kstew look cute together. SUE ME. personally i think it is so progressive and wonderful of me to always take movies with wlw’s and ignore what they give me and want something else/more/different (wine country i’m looking at u. specifically tammy x cath)

what else? mary steenburgen ily u know i’ve loved u since those clara clayton days. alison brie thanks 4 gracing my screen and ily to ur hair change in the time jump. hi to burl moseley i’ve missed u since cxg ended and i think about don’t be a lawyer every day sir! a bop if i’ve ever heard one. miss sarayu i saw u and i appreciated the looks thanks so much. dan levy i literally love u so much pls have my whole entire heart and the fish tank prop work was impeccable. MOST IMPORTANTLY miss ana gasteyer i did NOT appreciate the homophobia but it’s my right as a lesbian to focus on how HOT and EXPENSIVE you were in this film and that is what matters. thank u for existing

anyway in conclusion this movie made me feel insane and i know what happened in canon happened but also maybe it didn’t and abby realised that she’s allowed to want to be treated better whilst still understanding the complexities of coming out and families, and that she and riley are in love somewhere right now amen xx

Footsteps. Who's? His. No, no, not his. You're safe, remember? Things are safe. But why would his footsteps be so close then…?

Aya's thoughts echo for a moment, before her mind finally allows her to reenter the world of consciousness… Immediately aware of the short, bespectacled boy currently holding her phone.

"... Aki? What… What're you doing?" Aya asks quietly, before clearing her throat and actually sitting up.

Aki looks over with a jolt, his ears tilting back slightly when he realizes he woke Aya up. "O-oh- sorry, I didn't mean to wake you…" He says, smiling apologetically.

"It's fine, Aki…" Aya says, then does a double take. "Why're you holding my phone…?"

Aki pales a bit, before a blush rushes to his cheeks. "U-um, well… I wanted to call and get you a day off… I-it's your birthday, after all… Um- happy birthday, by the way!" He says, trying to change the subject with a sweet smile.

"Shit, that's today? I'd forgotten… Thanks, Aki, but I still need to work. I can't just randomly take a day off…" She says, shaking her head as she gets out of bed.

She's wearing what she usually does while she sleeps, a tank top with her hair loose on her shoulders, but she immediately goes to get the button up and pants she wears for work.

"I- okay…" Aki sighs, putting her phone down.

"Hey, I love you. Thanks for trying to look out for me, but I'll be back after work…" Aya says, smiling at Aki.

Aki smiles back, his usual cheerful demeanor returning without a hint of his previous expression. "I love you too! I hope you have a really good day at work…" He says.

"I will. Now shoo, I need to get dressed." Aya says, laughing a bit as Aki rushes for the door with an "Oh- sorry!"

Aya pulls off her tank top, revealing the light bruise on her rib with clear scarring around it. "Damn… Must've rolled onto it at some point and aggravated things…" She mutters, slipping her arms into her shirt and starting to button it up to hide the markings.

She finishes getting dressed pretty quickly, heading out and immediately met by the sweet scent of something cooking in the kitchen. Naturally, it draws her attention, and a smile tugs at the corners of her mouth as she walks to the kitchen with quiet steps.

Of course, the cook still looks back when Aya enters, bright red hair pulled back into a ponytail that bounces as she moves. "Oh, good- you're up!" Laura smiles warmly at Aya, although she's still working on… What looks like pancakes, but there's definitely something else cooking in the kitchen.

"Good morning…" Aya says with a smile, walking up to Laura to wrap her arms around her waist loosely and give her a sweet kiss.

The kiss can only last for a few moments before Laura reluctantly pulls away to return to making the pancakes, already to the point of using the plates she'd pulled out ahead of time. Aya lets her go and backs up just enough to be out of the way, although Laura isn't avoiding 'accidentally' brushing up against her as she goes.

"Here you are. Happy birthday, darling~" Laura says, and Aya replies with a warm smile as she takes the plate from Laura, although she's interrupted by a kiss before Laura makes the rest of the pancakes. Aya stays nearby as she eats all she can, her curiosity about the other thing cooking clear as she glances towards the stove, realizing that it must be in the oven.

Laura giggles, looking over at Aya before looking back at the food she's dishing up as Aki walks in.

When they finish, Aya walks out with a hug from Aki and a slightly longer than normal kiss from Laura before heading to her car and driving to work… She doesn't expect what she finds when she gets there, though.

"Happy birthday, Aya!" Her coworkers and even the manager got together to wish her a happy birthday, along with getting her one of the good brownies. Altogether it was almost enough to make her cry… Who am I kidding? We all know she cried.

After they had sufficient time to congratulate her at another year, her manager sent her home with the untouched brownie. The first thing she noticed was Brie's car in the parking lot beside where she usually parks. Aya doesn't think too hard on it, assuming Aki had yet again meddled and gotten Brie here for her birthday.

As Aya opens the door, Laura greets her with another kiss as she pulls her inside, Aki going to close the door behind them while Brie, sitting on the couch, averts her eyes for multiple reasons. Laura only releases her from the kiss when she realizes the others are simply averting their eyes and trying to keep their awkward energy at bay without luck.

"Happy birthday, darling." Laura says quietly once they part, a thin trail of saliva connecting their lips for a moment before they actually separate and Laura goes to the kitchen to fetch something.

"Ah- y-yeah, happy birthday, Aya!" Brie says, standing up and kind of awkwardly smiling at Aya, only able to keep her eyes on her for a few moments before looking away.

"Happy birthday big sis!" Aki adds on, smiling brightly as he subtly glances over at Brie to see if she's okay.

Laura returns before Aya can say anything, carrying a pie in her hands with gently flickering candles topping it. As soon as she's in view she starts to sing, and the other two join in very quickly.

It's easy for Aya to pick out each voice, even though they actually harmonize rather well… Needless to say, she didn't realize she knew so many people that could sing well. After the candles are blown out, they divide the pie into several pieces to share with the others. With how little Aya naturally eats, and how much she's had, they'll have more. She still tries to eat as much as she can of the pie, although that still isn't much…

Once they're finished, Brie reveals a present she'd bought a while ago just to give to Aya once she discovered her birthday… Neatly wrapped in paper decorated with flowers, a pair of sketchbooks and a large pack of colored pencils. Something she'd decided on when hearing Aya offhandedly comment that she missed drawing but would always run out of materials too quick and it got expensive.

Aki… Well, he started by organizing all this, and continued with setting everything up, but he also made her a card and actively collects trinkets all year to give her on her birthday and on Christmas, since he doesn't really get many opportunities to buy things.

And I'm not sure what Laura would get for Aya so I'll just-

All in all, Aya cries multiple times making both Brie and Aki panic because Aya isn't exactly known for happy tears…

The rest of the day is filled with actual joy in the house, which is something that really wasn't common. Brie leaves soon after the presents, however, saying something about how she had to get back home or her mother would get upset.

And thus ends my only happy story~

Monday dawns with perfect spring weather. It’s warm enough that Nikolai doesn’t need more than a t-shirt, and as he and Seth walk to Teas Please, they see several PHU students in shorts, sundresses, and sandals. The combination of Spring Festival Week and the good weather lends an air of celebration to campus and the surrounding homes. Towels are spread on lawns, music plays loudly, and people are everywhere outside, tossing frisbees and footballs, or basking in the sun while studying.

Nobody cares that Nikolai and Seth walk hand in hand down the street. Some kids wave cheerfully, and one apologizes after diving in front of them to capture an errant frisbee.

“I think I’ll miss this place when we go,” Seth says quietly as their near miss darts off again, flinging the frisbee at his friend. “Not enough that I want to stay, but there’s something about this—”

“It’s innocent,” Nikolai agrees. “Freeing. It’s like it’s easy to live here.”

“That’s it, yes.” Seth’s thumb slides along the edge of Nikolai’s hand. “We can go get food. We don’t have to scramble for a place to sleep. If we stayed longer we’d have to work somehow, I’m sure, but right now, we’re just able to enjoy everything. I’m going to miss that part.”

Nikolai grabs the door to Teas Please when they get there, pulling it open for Seth to go through first. Nate spots them and waves, calling out, “I’ve got them,” as the hostess at the front pulls two menus from a stack.

“I guess Nate will be with you shortly,” she says with a small smile, handing them the menus while they wait.

Seth holds the menus as they follow Nate into the back of the restaurant. A group is already at the u-shaped table, but Cass sits at a table for two next to it, and the table next to her is empty. She looks up as they approach and sighs heavily, standing up to help squeeze the two smaller tables together into one space.

“I’ve got lunch break coming up,” Nate says. “Give me your order and I’ll get everything in at once and bring it out, or—” He breaks off, frowning as he leans in close to Cass. “Hey. Want a Mallory special?”

She rolls her eyes and sits back, arms crossed over her chest. “Whatever. It was good before.”

Nate hesitates a moment, then nods. “Okay, fine,” he says before he walks away.

Nikolai has the chair opposite Cass, with Seth next to him. She’s piled a light sweater and purse on the bench next to her, effectively making it so no one could get close. “Are you okay with us sitting here?” he asks.

She looks at the ceiling, shakes her head. “No. But it’s fine. I knew when I came here that I’d probably end up with half my sorority or some other random group of people I know coming in eventually.”

“Then why did you come?” Seth looks for a moment like he’s going to say something else, but his expression gentles instead.

Cass shrugs. “Nate’s here. The food’s decent. I don’t have most of my classes this week because the professors know no one’s going to show up anyway, except for this one stupid exam I have on Thursday. That professor’s a total dick; he made the exam this week just because it’s the festival and he knows people will be out drinking on Wednesday.” She tilts her head to look at them more directly. “That’s Election Day.”

None of that makes sense, but Nikolai nods like it does.

“Would it help if I—” Seth cuts off, his hand in the air when Cass glares at him.

“Don’t,” she says curtly. “I don’t need any kind of Talent induced high, or the equivalent of an emotional back rub. My emotions are just fine the way they are and I will deal with them, thank you very much.”

“Noted,” Seth says, his hand falling back to the table.

It occurs to Nikolai that Nate never asked him and Seth what they wanted to eat. He supposes they’re getting a Mallory special as well.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Seth offers. He doesn’t shrink away when Cass glares at him, just watches her with the same quiet consideration he’s given Nikolai his whole life.

Cass blinks first. She picks up the napkin wrapped around silverware and carefully unwraps the fork and knife. She lays them on the table, flattening out the napkin before putting it on her lap. “I’m fine.”

Even Nikolai can tell she’s lying. “You don’t sound it.”

“This semester—this school year, really—has been… a lot,” Cass says slowly, her voice tight and words careful. “This,” she gestures at Nikolai and Seth, “is just the end of several months’ worth of too much to deal with.”

“And you’re the kind of person who would rather bottle it up than rely on anyone else,” Seth says. When she tries to skewer him with a glare again, he just spreads his hands palm down on the table. “It’s an observation, not a judgment. You have your reasons, and given that I don’t know what they are, I can’t say whether this is a good or a bad thing. But you seem pretty miserable just from body language alone. I’d know even if I couldn’t feel it radiating off of you. Not that I’m listening on purpose. I can’t help it—you’re doing the emotional equivalent of empathic screaming right now. I’m kind of surprised that Heather hasn’t tried to hold you down and smother you in happy. She seems kind of like the type who’d do that.”

“Heather isn’t very good with negative emotions.” Cass has a small smile at that. “She likes being our social director, because it means she gets to work hard at making people happy. On the other hand, she’s also very easy to fool. A thin layer of pleasure over everything else and she doesn’t try to dig any deeper than that. I love Dax. I love sex with Dax. And I generally have fun at house events. Just the Dax parts are enough to keep her from looking for more.”

Her head tilts as she considers him more closely. “Is it because you haven’t seen me as much with Dax, or because you don’t know us as well? Or am I slipping?”

Seth nudges his glasses up his nose. “I think it’s the first. I’m just getting my first impressions of you now, and I don’t have that formed opinion of you as a part of you-and-Dax. If you asked me, I’d say your closest friends are… hm.” He leans back in his chair, tapping his chin with one finger. “You rely on Dax, but that’s a comfort thing. Like he’s that blanket you take everywhere. And he kinds of treats you the same way. Which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s like you both take each other for granted the way people who’ve been together forever do. Then there’s Mac and Carolyn and you have this weird love/hate thing going with them. You’re like that with all your sorority sisters, but you’re afraid of Heather, which is why I know you don’t like Empaths.”

“Or Telepaths,” Cass admits, “but I’ve only ever met one person who could really get inside my head like that.”

Nikolai’s surprised by that statement. It’s a more common Talent than that. “You may not know you’ve met them. Most Telepaths are more instinctive, like Empaths,” Nikolai says.

Cass’s expression twists into something vaguely constipated. “Lovely.”

“Then there’s Nate,” Seth continues as if they hadn’t interrupted him. “You have this really weird level of comfort with him, but it’s like you’re afraid of him at the same time, and other times you look at him like you have no idea what he’s even doing there. But you trust him and I think you hate yourself a little bit for that.”

“Cass hates herself for trusting someone?” Nate nudges her sweater and purse out of the way so he can drop into the empty spot on the bench next to her. He pushes a plate in front of her, piled high with salad and a thinly toasted sandwich cut into four wedges decorating the rim interspersed with what look like homemade thick-cut potato chips. “One Mallory special. Kim’s bringing out a shared meal for the two of you,” he tells Nikolai and Seth.

He keeps his own plate in front of him, with a three tiered sandwich made of thick, dark bread. Nikolai can smell the peanut butter, and the strong scent of smoke and maple. “What is that?”

“Bacon peanut butter club,” Nate says. “Take a peanut butter sandwich, then slather the top of it with mayo and some cranberry sauce, add lettuce and bacon and a third slice of bread, and there you go. It’s disturbingly good.”

“Ew,” Cass says, but she still holds out one small triangle of her toasted sandwich and accepts a quarter of Nate’s sandwich in return.

A girl who must be Kim arrives with one of the three-tiered contraptions, but instead of small bites on each plate, each one is overflowing, and she carries another plate in her hand. “Mallory apparently thinks you’re starving,” she says as she sets it between Nikolai and Seth. “I hope you’re in the mood for some citrus. You’ve got a carrot and leek non-dairy creamed soup with fresh lemon and ginger, and a spring salad with candied orange peel and walnuts. The sandwich is a chicken and brie panini with apple slices; I’ve had that one and it’s really good and I wish we’d put it on the menu. And for dessert, a lemon berry crêpe with a dark chocolate drizzle.”

Kim straightens up, glancing at the booth next to them where the patrons are filing out in a burst of noise. She lowers her voice, nods at it. “It’ll take me five to get it cleaned up, okay?”

Nate grins. “You know us so well. I don’t think we’re expecting anyone else but I wasn’t actually expecting anyone at all in the first place, which is how it works. If that booth’s emptying out, I figure there are more people incoming.”

Cass rolls her eyes but doesn’t speak, her mouth full of Nate’s peanut butter club sandwich.

As soon as Kim finishes cleaning the table, Nate nudges Cass, and they all pick up their things to move into the booth. There’s plenty of room to spread out, and Cass slides all the way down to the end, leaving space between her and Nate.

“So,” Nate asks. “Who do you hate yourself for trusting?”

Cass holds out another of her toasted sandwich triangles, and Nate silently passes her another quarter of his club sandwich in return. “You, obviously,” she says, before taking a bite. “I don’t trust people easily.”

“But you do trust me,” Nates says. One hand on his heart, he smiles at her. “I’m honored.”

“I’m going to throw chips at you soon.” Cass brandishes her piece of sandwich, and Nate laughs.

He stops mid-motion as he turns away, then lifts a hand, waving as he slides further down the bench and closer to Cass. He makes enough room for Mac to slide in, but Carolyn lingers at the end to kiss Serina.

“I’ll come by later or if you’re still here when my shift ends we can, I don’t know, go somewhere else then,” Serina says. She leans up on her toes and kisses Carolyn’s forehead. “Eat some real food. You’ve been buried in the library so much you’re going to turn into a book.”

“I’ve been eating,” Carolyn protests. “I swear I have, but Pawel—” She glances at Mac. “We should bring home something for Pawel. He’s—”

“He ate an apple at breakfast,” Seth comments.

Nikolai thinks that was his whole breakfast. Sort of. “I saw him eating a bowl of cereal a while after that. He’s drinking a lot of coffee. And he eats granola bars. If you put one next to him, it’s gone when you come back. What he’s not doing is sleeping.”

“I tried to stop in and he threw me out and told me you were here,” Mac grumbles. “I bumped into Carolyn on the way over. He needs to take care of himself. He’s no good if he’s so worn out he passes out.”

“I think he’s too grouchy to let go,” Seth says.

“Like a toddler,” Mac insists. “He’s like a toddler who doesn’t want to miss anything and won’t nap.”

Serina gently pushes Carolyn onto the bench. “I have to go work.” She wiggles her fingers at Nate. “See you when your break is over,” she calls out to him, and he lifts a hand to wave back.

Nikolai watches Cass as Mac and Carolyn settle in. She doesn’t tell them to leave, but she doesn’t seem welcoming either, focusing instead on her salad and her remaining toasted sandwich triangles. Mac reaches past Nate to steal a chip from Cass’s plate. Carolyn pulls a laptop out of her bag and opens it up along with a dark purple notebook.

“I have information,” Carolyn says. She looks at the others, frowning slightly. “Not that we came here to meet. We need to order food. But since some of us are together, I thought I could catch you up.”

“Pawel is there every second of the day, but he’s not actually telling us anything. So yes, please, talk to us.” Seth makes a go on motion. “Have you made any progress on the Ritual?”

“Pawel’s still looking into it, but I don’t think the original ritual can be reversed. Not as it was.” Carolyn’s fingers move quickly over her keyboard, then slow as she finds what she’s looking for. “According to what we’ve learned, I think that if we tried to reverse what was done, we might destroy the Split completely, but that could backfire and either destroy all the Shadows—effectively committing genocide against an entire Lineage of Talented humans—or it might end up encouraging another global Emergence, and consume more Talents with vestigial Shadowwalker blood while also pushing them into the Dreamscape. If we close our world, that means we are effectively destroying lives and sending them to other worlds to wreak havoc.”

“That’s not an ideal solution,” Cass mutters dryly.

“Exactly,” Mac replies. She steals another chip, easily dodging as Cass swats at her hand. “Which is why reversing the Ritual is off the table for now. But Pawel’s desperately researching a different Ritual and making plans that don’t involve sleep.”

Carolyn scrolls through her document, frowning as she reads something on the screen in front of her.

“I’m half afraid to ask, but what kind of Ritual is he considering that won’t end up with us all turning into our inner Shadowwalker and succumbing to the dark side?” Cass asks sharply.

“We need a place—or rather several places—where the liminal spaces between reality and the Dreamscape are weak.” Carolyn touches her screen as she reads from it. “The idea is to create a Ritual that transcends this one world. If we have the worlds in contact when we work against the Split, that should protect us. Them.” She motions as if to indicate unseen Shadowwalkers.

Which is exactly what Nikolai had thought they’d been talking about, only this seems a bit more specific. “What about the Benford house?” Nikolai asks. “The Berman place here. We could feel it in our world, before it was cleansed, and here it hasn’t been touched.”

“Would it end up with you dragging us all into the Dreamscape?” Cass asks. Nate gives her a confused look, and Cass points at Carolyn. “When she brought that Shadowwalker back. She dragged everyone into the Dreamscape with her somehow.”

“That was Mattie’s crossover, and has nothing to do with this,” Carolyn replies. She closes her laptop with a soft thunk and crosses her hands on top of it. “It was a unique situation that I think was caused by her soul being so close to the reality and my own Talent still being in the process of Emerging. Not to mention Del’s presence and our history.”

“I think that if you’re looking for somewhere that blurs the line, that’s probably a good place.” Mac’s words nudge the conversation away from Cass and Carolyn glaring at each other. “You think it’s a liminal space?”

“It’s close to the Dreamscape,” Carolyn agrees. “It was close enough that Del and I were able to get us there accidentally. Do you think the cleansing of the Benford place would mean it’s not as close now?”

“You know what happened to the wards,” Nikolai reminds her. “Everything kept coming back to that one place, and I think that points to it being exactly the kind of place Pawel’s looking for. I’ve been to the Berman house here—”

“So have I,” Carolyn says softly.

“Then you’ve been to both, too. You know what I mean. They aren’t the same, but they correlate,” Nikolai says. “Alia won’t like the risk, but I think Val could be persuaded. The Alia and Val of our world,” he amends, because now there’s a Valentine here, too, and talking about them is potentially confusing. “I don’t know what Alia here would think about it, and it’s probably not something Valentine really gets to talk about. It’s not her home.”

“The Alia of this world isn’t a fan of magic,” Mac admits.

“But she’s getting better.” Carolyn closes her laptop, opens the notebook instead. She shows a page with cards drawn on it, and neatly penned writing beneath. “She actually came to me for a reading a couple of months ago, and I told her to start a revolution. Which is exactly what seems to be happening.”

Mac makes a hmm sort of noise and steals another one of Cass’s chips.

“I actually need to get back to work.” Nate slides his plate in front of Mac, the sandwich gone but a pile of crispy chips still remaining. “Let me out, then you can finish my chips. Leave Cass’s alone.”

Mac and Carolyn slide out to let him go, but Carolyn doesn’t manage to sit down again before her phone sings out. She looks at the number, lips pressed together as she silences it. “I’ve got to go,” she says, shoving her laptop and notebook back in the bag. “I’ll get something to eat later.”

“Want me to bring something back to the house for you?” Mac offers as Carolyn is already walking away.

“Actually, yeah, that’d be great. I just need to—” She stops several steps from the table, turning back to say, “Make Nikolai and Seth take something home for Pawel.”

“If he’s eating granola bars he’ll eat whatever they put out, probably, yes,” Mac agrees.

“And tell Serina that I—”

“Had to go. She’s right there,” Cass points. “Kiss her on your way out. I’m sure she gets it.”

“She probably doesn’t really get it,” Mac murmurs as Carolyn catches Serina and kisses her cheek on the way by. “Serina’s kind of swept up in this because Carolyn is, but she hasn’t really been a part of it. It’s all happening around her. Alaric and Nikita are on her floor. She’s got Carolyn. But she’s not Talented and she just kind of goes with the flow.”

“But she’s there for Carolyn,” Seth says. “Right? Sometimes when one person’s the raging river of chaos, it’s good that the other one’s the stable rock.”

Nikolai reaches under the table to slide his hand over Seth’s knee in silent thanks for being his rock. “Are you saying I dragged you into this?”

“You are the Dreamwalker who dismantled wards so badly that you not only got us thrown out of Havenhill, we left the world entirely,” Seth says. The sharp words are softened by a fond smile, and Nikolai can’t resist stealing a kiss.

“Is that what I look like?” Cass murmurs.

“All the time,” Mac whispers back. “Only you tend to look even more like you’re going to jump Dax any second. What I’d like to know, though, is when you and Nate started trading food like an old married couple?”

Cass blinks. “You stole my chips, not him.”

They’re distracted and it’s a perfect time to steal another kiss that tastes of blueberry crêpe and bittersweet chocolate. While Cass and Mac bicker and laugh in the background, Nikolai can just enjoy the moment here with Seth.

Basically a mildly funny, delusional therapy session!

Ok, I can't anymore I just need to let it out.

I've been in bed since this morning as I got food poisoning/stomach flu and I'm quite sure it's because of D&D and not the T/A.

So anyway let's rant...also my nimble fingers might make typos as I'm super dehydrated (feeling like Ghost after fighting with WWs and being abandoned by Jon the Dumbest).

So we start with the funeral.....and its sombre as shit. Well done David Nutter btw. And we move on to eating food 🤮.

Here we go: Dany! I love(d) her so much, but lately she's all over the place going from crazy to crazy in love. Now don't let my lack of detecting any chemistry between her and Resident Emo Boy confuse you BUT are we just all going to sweep the incestous undertones under the pelts?Here I am watching another make out scene???.....but ok I shall resurrect and go to Kings Landing where Cersei is hosting a party (Wall themed I see). After losing her baby (also wth how did she not see them?why didn't she dracarys Eurons ass?), her Sir Friendzone and her BFF once again Dany is made to seem BAD for mourning in a murderous way (ah I guess it's ok if Arya does it....or Snow?), Being held to higher standard .....JUST BC SHE HAS A VAGINA??? ( Dios Mio, Olenna please).

Next up on my list Arya who went back to her old cuddle buddy The Hound.....Kind of digging it. Gendry you dumbass (❤️) offer her to go on a round-trip of murder (Bonnie & Clyde style) not a marriage. Also mad love for making her an honest woman with those puppy eyes.

Brienne & Jaime ....and this is where we go cray-cray. Dear fellow citizen of Tumblr, if you still reading brace yourself....by the end of the next 2 episodes (if U ARE a BRAIME shipper) you be losing golden hands, legs, basically everything that you can rip off (like Miss Vanjie did when singing No More Pain). So after reading countless (!!!!) posts about how people interpreted that scene (remember dear reader I was ill today so it was a lot) I think we can settle on Prince Charming Now Turned Old Guy Because Of International Incestous Relations is a dumbass with a death wish. BUT is he a good dumbass or a bad one.Now here I'd like to point out two things I didn't see considered:

Jaime already killed a king to save the population of Kings Landing.

Jaime said to Brienne he would have done the deed at Riverrun....but he didn't cus of Brie-Brie .....I'm assuming we all saw the things he did for her that went against Cersei. He went back to rescue her instead of rushing to KL, he arranged for her to leave as soon as Queen Should Have Been Thanos' Wife even breathed in her general direction, gave her instructions and means to protect Sansa even though his sister wanted her dead, took Riverrun in piece BC Brie-Brie asked !!!!! Come on guys after all that you can't believe he would put Cersei before her (or maybe I'm fuckin wrong since D&D don't even seem to know correct details in their behind the scenes cuts). So yes I believe Jamie wants to kill Female Jaime because....if she defeats Dany she is coming for them in Winter fell (also Brienne and Sansa are in WF).

No I don't ship Jaimsa (because hello fuckin weirdos 💝), but Briennes oath means something to Jaime.

BUT I hate...hate...hate how Jaime left her (the 🍑). He broke her heart after she finally opened it ...and this (D2 will burn in hell, the crossroads demon is on it).

Also my two weirdos having the most relatable and clumsy copulation (yes I said it, someone had to) moment. Like don't we all just flirt like Jaime...so smooth: it's hot in here bitches breeches off. Oh look my poor hand doesn't work I guess I will need your help...🥺🥺🥺

Brienne will NOT die. I can't believe otherwise.There are some characters you don't touch (Juliet from Lost, Clarke from The 100, Castiel) and she is one of them. I love that Gwen was real about her arc of being a woman this season.

I do think I have an unhealthy obsession with Braime as this episode actually made me sick(no it wasn't the take away) and now I will forever remember this as the night Braime became canon and the day when I felt like The Prince of Dorne when his eyes were popping (oh Oberyn....Pedro Pascal I miss your holiness sexiness).

And what with all the articles/YouTubers predicting pregnancies? We watched (with my friend, I'm not hallucinating from dehydration) people predicting a pregnant Dany, Brienne, Arya (?)....basically everyone with boobs. Chill guys if you worried about repopulating Samwell is on it!

And Tyrion best wingman in Westeros. What even was he doing showing off to GingerBain (btw good for you, tap dat rebound ass babe....and have fun going back to the land of the lost....you could have taken Dumbass Emo with you 🤫). Btw guys how many versions of the Two Dudes Just Hanging And Discussing The Fate Of The Iron Throne While Demeaning Rulers (mostly women) As Incompetent do we have to sit through? Can I like request to see actual things like Two Eyed Robot telling the sisters about the heritage or Sansa telling Tyrion instead of cutting away? That Tyrion and Sansa scene was having me on the edge.

And we come to Sansa. My queen, my sunshine and..... apparently my New Little finger ( is it only me who hates this comparison that reduces her to a power hungry, brothel-less creepy dude even thought she's been doing everything for her family????). I lost it when I heard them bring this up in the Untucked Uncut vid. Like maybe give us some actual scenes with Sansa where we get to see her contemplating her goals and wishes and not just her looking pretty up into the sky (compulsory shot of season 8). I've been feeling so far away from Sansa since season 7 (worst season ever....but this one is a contender).

Also from now on I'm believing in Bronn.He foresaw the Bang and said he will collect later. There will be a later for the boys! Bronn gave up on the castle he's now gone to take over for the Witchy Woman who talked to frogs and Cersei. Big ups for the resident Reversed Three Eyed Raven!

I have read the interview where GRRM said he doesn't agree or like some character fates. I agree GRRM so can you give us a book ....I mean God's it takes me ages to get started on my coursework, bit at least I submit it 10 min before the deadline!

Also the total lack of any mention of Braime in both behind the scenes....??!!!...Might be good news.
