Realistically I think the Houses don't use guns because John doesn't like guns, in the same way he dresses up the Cohort “like the military wing of disco”

I think there's also something to be said about how Cohort necromancers kill their enemies to drain them for thanergy, and presumably they'd need to be at close range for that, but I'm not sure that swords vs. firearm has a huge bearing on which weapons they use. Because you can kill at close range with firearms, and guns ≠ painless and immediate.

I really think it's mostly down to John losing his mind mid-apoteosis while everyone got gunned down in front of him and deciding that his space empire would do the imperialism thing without gunpowder. That, plus the fact that their whole space navy is based on space stations and moves through spaceships.

Anyway, now I'm wondering if the Houses have any long range weapons at all. Cohort spaceships probably have missiles, but I don't get the vibe there used often. BoE / non House civilisation doesn't have stele travel and I bet they lack an armed navy; there's no ship to ship combat, which is why it was such a Big Deal in HtN when BoE sent those missiles against Cohort ships — it's not something that's ever happened before.

I think necromancers “breaking ground” on a new planet is the necromancy equivalent of bombing it with thanergy, in the same way lyctors “flipping” planets is probably the thanergy equivalent of nuking them from orbit, but do we think they have any long range ground weapons that aren't necromantic in nature?

Okay but does Peri KNOW that Dev has a robotic leg when he shows up? Something about the fact that Peri's wand is a cane and the fact that Dev could have kept his leg and just had a cane for the rest of his life instead tickles my brain.

I mean he doesn't know immediately, he wasn't like briefed or anything, but he basically lives in Dev's house so he definitely finds out. Peri doesn't comment on or react to it all though really, there's no reason for him to think anything of it, plenty of people have missing limbs, a lot of people are born without them, it doesn't necessarily mean anything sinister happened. He had no reason to pry or ask and I think Peri's lack of reaction to it helped Dev feel a bit more comfortable in his skin. (Not by much but.. a little bit.)

I'm still thinking about that scene in Victoriocity S3E7 where Fleet runs back towards the Beast so as to lure it into the path of the train...

Clara's exclamation of 'Teamwork, Fleet!' after Fleet says he's got a plan reflects her conviction that any plan that Fleet has will be a shared plan, something they do together.

This conviction is a kind of trust, and that trust is part of the reason Clara takes a moment to realise Fleet has headed back towards the Beast. She trusts that he's following behind her. She keeps talking to him, her words full of optimism.

When she realises Fleet isn't there, she immediately realises what that must mean he's done, and her voice sounds more small and scared than I think we've ever heard it before.

Fleet's attempt at self-sacrifice is a kind of betrayal of Clara's trust, but when he echoes her celebration of their teamwork in a more somber tone, I think it suggests that he understands the weight of that betrayal.

If Fleet's plan is that Clara won't realise he's gone until it's already too late, then he thinks "Teamwork, Clara" will be the last words he'll ever speak to her. In what he imagines will be their final conversation, Fleet affirms Clara's understanding of them as a team who work well together, even as he is making a choice that rejects the possibility of their teamwork in this scenario. It's a recognition of what their dynamic has meant. It's a goodbye and an apology, even if Clara doesn't understand it as such at first.

I don't think Fleet sounds scared as he initially faces down the train. When he shouts "Yeah, this way, you stupid machine! Come on then!", he sounds defiant and grimly determined.

In fact, I don't think he sounds afraid until Clara appears, until she might be at risk of being in the path of the Beast or the train as well. It's when he shouts "Clara, stay back for God's sake!" and "Please, get back!" that there's real fear and desperation in his voice. He can confront the idea of giving his own life, but not the idea that doing so might put Clara in danger.

Another thing about these lines is that the move from 'stay back' to 'get back' suggests that Clara didn't obey his first instruction but got closer to him (and therefore to the path of the Beast and the train) between those two lines.

Then Fleet gives what might be another attempt at his last words: "I'm sorry! I'm sorry."  A repeated apology before an attempted self-sacrifice is an implicit acknowledgement of how much losing him would hurt Clara. He regrets causing her pain.

Even so, he's accepted that he is about to die and that it'd be worth it to destroy the Beast. But Clara very much hasn't accepted either those things. She's still trying to yell over the noise of the train; she's pulling off her ring to throw at him.

I think it's a good illustration of how Clara's optimism is a kind of strength. She always believes that they can "make a new plan" and that it'll be one in which no one has to die. I think Archibald Fleet needs someone like that, someone who'll tell him to drop to the ground when his death advances from both sides, someone who - even in a dark tunnel with an murderous metal monster and a speeding train - won't stop shouting that there's hope.

Little headcanon i have(and kind of a writting prompt if you want) is that Mei doesn't really like big, fancy parties. She has to go to them since she was quite young because of her family, but she simply isn't really confortable in them. She would preffer being at one of the messy parties at the Zero-Gravity Arcade a thousand times over being around people that feel like they are just looking for an excuse to judge her more and try to not mess up really badly, thank you very much.

Because of that, she likes to sneaks out of the main place that event is being held in and goes to whatever quiet place she can find, like a Garden or a isolated bathroom, so she can call MK. They usually just talk about random things, like the projects they're working on, what they're going to do the next day and just life in general. Unfortunatly, with MK working at Pigsy's, he can't talk to her for very long because he has work the next day. Sometimes, he can't even talk to her at all because of that. So, in those times, she just keeps scrowling through her social media until it she can go back to her house.

...well, that is what happens before the whole Samadhi Fire thing. And, after it, she somehow gets Red Son's number. So...

Mei, 1 or 2 hours into this party and already sick of it: *calls Red Son's number* please respond, please respond, please-

Red: *picks up* ...

Red, who was actually sleeping and not working in one of his projects until late for once: ...huh?

Person A who works some kind of high-end IT, or other job, that doesn’t require them to be at work all the time. They get home for the weekend to find B sick with the flu (or something else). They take care of them, getting little to no sleep, during the weekend and for most of the next week. Their boss said they didn’t have to be in until Thursday, and luckily B gets better right before Thursday.

A goes into work on about 2 hours of sleep total from that entire week. It starts as a normal day until there’s some kind of emergency. Whatever the job is, A has to continuously work to neutralize the threat while the others find the source of the problem. (Think like, they have to keep an important system running manually until the others can find what went wrong.)

A works off of nothing but willpower and coffee for the next 30 or so hours. They don’t even register their burning eyes or their cramped body until the job is done. They don’t register much of anything past their exhaustion. Everyone congratulates them on their extremely hard work once the emergency is over. A stands, leaning heavily on their desk as their vision swims, and Person C, their coworker and close friend, also stands to congratulate them. C catches A as they sway into their side.

A doesn’t pass out, exactly—C feels their sluggish blinking against their neck where A’s head is still limply resting. But they’re not moving much and are beyond registering anything going on. They don’t have the energy to move or think at the moment. C asks when they last slept, they can usually take an all-nighter pretty well. A mumbles, “what day is it?” C is only more concerned at their slurred words.

“It’s Friday.”

“Friday”

“Yeah, so when did you last sleep?”

“That’s what I said…” A trails off and C realizes, with horror, that they mean last friday. Cue C shaking A awake as much as they can, either dragging them to a break room couch or some other place to rest, or all the way home, with an incoherent, slightly-warm A barely keeping their feet under themselves. C manages to deposit them onto their bed or wherever. You can decide if A is already asleep by the time their head hits the pillow, or if they don’t sleep until C says something like “It’s okay, you can rest now.”

C probably stays with them to make sure they’re still alive, and they eventually notice the sweat on A’s forehead and the flush to their cheeks…

i feel like the ancients in frontiers bother me but im having a hard time pinning down the exact specifics of it. i don't think i have a problem with them being an alien ancient civilization, but the execution of them feels kind of. generic. beyond the implied connection to chaos that is. the echidnas were portrayed as warmongering and power hungry, likely due to their leadership, and they have an interesting position as a part of knuckles' heritage when knuckles is in several ways the exact opposite of their ideals - a peaceful guardian who seeks to preserve and not to conquer. the ancients in boom were left vague due to the dev hell and the repeat rewrites of the story, but in some ways it does them favors i'd say. they are a looming presence upon bygone island, their history scattered about and left to be rediscovered. supposedly a peaceful society sans lyric, who was able to cause havoc and destruction perhaps because the rest of his people did not have something like an army to fight back immediately. lyric was the only one who had any sort of ties to military concepts. the cartoon gives the ancients impressive technology, but i can't recall it being too much more than just fun machines whose primary purposes were along the lines of transportation and entertainment. i think those sort of implications make the ancients more interesting than they perhaps could've been if they were given some kind of obvious and explicit military history.

the frontiers' ancients feel like some kind of unsuccessful middle ground of those concepts i think? we are directed to see them as the peaceful underdogs while they also have a massive military presence and horrific tools of war that we fight directly over the course of the game, that we Require super sonic to bring down. i understand that at least some of that arsenal was built to fight the end, but then you juxtapose that advanced and destructive technology with the seemingly rural architecture littering the islands that, unlike the titans, has rotted and decayed in the face of nature. is that not supposed to speak of their priorities as society? or were their stay at the islands always supposed to be temporary? but then why build something like the cyberspace which is very much connected to the islands themselves?

i don't know maybe im missing something, maybe i've been thinking about the portrayal of military forces in sonic too hard lately, it just bothers me that the ancients are simultaneously supposed to be both a competent and strong military presence which the DLC only amplifies, and a peaceful society that would never even think about doing anything other than defend themselves with that destructive military they've built for themselves

ATOMS! oh my gooood, i wonder how far atoms as a concept have already been explored. There's so much to them. This model (called the bohr model fyi) shows the very stererotypical way most people know an atom, with a nucleus in the middle and electrons orbiting it. It's not true! It's outdated. That's not what electrons do. What we know about electrons is that we don't know what they even exactly do. This isn't because science is lazy but because it is physically impossible to do so (see heisenberg uncertainty principle). Instead we have orbitals, which are 3d spaces and basically a guess at where the electrons are most probably likely to be at. Mr Hart do you know what an orbital is??? This is what orbitals look like btw
