anaxa is a bit of a romantic at heart, even if the cold glares and scary aura act as if otherwise. he doesn't know why people want to explain it, he loves you. why would he be cruel if his heart only beats for you? common sense, he thinks.

and you can feel just how fast his heart is beating as you lay on top of him, under the stars and anaxa's back on the grass, stargazing in the silence of the night. words aren't exchanged because you two have come to realize that not every silence needs to be filled, just appreciated. it isn't every day that the world is quiet enough to hear anaxa's soft breaths, some sort of proof he's real. that he's still alive to enjoy this moment. and he can't be more thankful to the gods he doesn't believe in for the kindness he's always cursed them for never having.

mydei was celebrating your fourth month together, yes he's the type of guy to celebrate monthly anniversaries... sue him for being in love... but yes. four months isn't a lot of time but phainon's been asking about first kisses, which has YET to happen but there's really no rush. he doesn't wanna force anything you're not yet ready for, putting into consideration it's something so big. the first kiss has to be special, which is why he's in the process of making you an entire full course meal of your favorite dishes. all while you sit and look gorgeous by the counter, watching him like he's doing the most attractive thing a man can do. all while in a soft pink apron and his hair tied up since he thinks it gets into the food sometimes which is his worst fear.

what was he thinking again? right... right! not burning his hand. completely lost his train of thought after you complimented how nice he looked at this very moment. he could swear you had a certain look in your eyes, hungry for something entirely unrelated to food. may the aeon's forsake his heart for having it stutter like this. but also don't make it stop, he loves it, a bit too much.

when dinner is served, mydei is sure to tend to your every need. want more salt? he's up to get the shaker. water? refilled the pitcher to the very top as well as your glass. "mydei, i'll just get some tissue from the kitche—" he's already up, and you wanna beat him to it, but he's already stopping your path with the biggest smile. "sweetheart, why are you standing?" he chuckles, and you fake a little pout. "i wanna get it on my own. don't wanna have you do everything."

"if i'm not doing everything for you, i'm not doing things right." he counters while his hands travel to your waist, humming a little murmur of your name. "so perfect. just sit, i'll get them for you."

matching his advances, your arms quietly move to his shoulders, leaning into him as you usually do. "come on, let me do at least one thing for you."

this is starting to sound like it's not just about tissues. "please, just.. one thing."

are you supposed to be leaning into each others lips when you're asking for tissues? probably not. but mydei doesn't want to let this moment slip, he sees your slight hesitation, which if it was up to him he would've totally just kissed that doubt out of you. but he needs to hear the verbal confirmation. a reassurance that he's doing this right. "there are possibilities wherein this moment passes me without ever knowing what your lips feel against mine. please, please indulge in me for just a moment."

it lasted far longer than a moment. <3

phainon is a bit too much for a flirt to not get to the closest thing to a first kiss. cheek kisses is his favorite form of affection at the moment.. gets him all weak in the knees. he loves seeing you lean in for one and he just asks for another one till he's satisfied. greedy, yes. does he care? not really.

in a flowerfield of just the two of you and the prettiest floral scenery, it's a shot straight out of a movie. you're sat next to phainon, putting little flowers in his hair as he gets to admire you, a perfectly fair trade. you get to love the flowers, he gets to love you. all he ever needs to be honest.

"how did i ever get so lucky?" he sighs dramatically, pulling you closer by the waist as you snicker at his theatrics. "your soul is as beautiful as this field. i'm telling you, angel. if you stay any longer then the aeon's might try to take you away from me." his words have never failed to make you feel valued, and it's but a fraction of how he truly feels about you. he knows he will never be able to put everything into mere words, you deserve so much more than just that.

"phai, please. any sweeter and bees will start to use you for honey." and there it is, one of the many things phainon adores about you. just.. effortlessly matching him. his humor, aesthetics, lifestyle, passion.. all those things, you've perfectly matched his own. "i can take a few stings."

because it felt right, he kisses your cheek a couple of times, making you giggle and jokingly try to push him away, even if your strength is basically at zero and almost pulling him closer.

when he's finished, the blue haired hero points at his lips and smirks. "wanna return the favor, baby? right here is perfect."

it isn't the first time he's made this joke, and it probably won't be the last, but for once you feel.. ready. like it's right.

so when you close the gap between your lips and his, phainon absolutely malfunctions for a second. before locking in and kissing you with gentle fervor, one hand barely on your cheek because he wants to reassure you that you're free to pull away.

and when you don't, he's on cloud 9 the whole time. takes you into his arms and you both fall into the flowers, not breaking the kiss for a moment as laughter and lips crashing against one another fill the air.

Oh man he thinks he’s died and gone to heaven. I mean look Logan doesn’t care what you wear as long as like it. He thinks your attractive in 5 layers of clothes or nothing at all. But its a nice summer day and you planned a nice day out. Deciding its the perfect time to break out this old sundress you found at a thrift store a while back. He does silent when you walk out of the bedroom. Apart of him wants to stay home just so no one else gets the pleasure of seeing you in it but you’d never go for that. He’s following you like a love sick puppy around town. He’s obsessed with the way it swishes and how it looks on you. He can’t keep his hands off you. When you get home he begs you to wear it more often. Especially when you’re home with him. Preferably with no underwear if he had his way

Trilogy Logan -

Absolute menace. He will not be able to help himself. It’s a nice summer day at the mansion and Jean had given you a nice sundress for your birthday. Logan was lying on his bed, grumbling about the damn heat and the noisy kids outside. You knock on his door asking if he wants to come outside with you. He gets up ready to tell you not today but then he sees you in your dress and all thoughts go out the window. You just look so fucking cute. His hand rests at your waist the whole time he’s walking with you. Shooting daggers at anyone who even thinks about looking at you. His hand may slip down a couple times and you scold him for it but he’s never sorry.

He whispers a lot of dirty things in your ear. Asking why you never put this on before and how pretty you look. When he’s sure no one is looking he even lifts it up to catch a glimpse at your underwear. Like I said menace. He really likes it and makes it very known. In fact the next week you find a bag sitting on your bed with a shorter sundress in Logan’s favorite color.

DOFP Logan -

He swears you’re trying to kill him. Honestly you can’t just wear something like that and expect him to be normal. He’s grading papers when you stop by his classroom to kiss him goodbye. You’re taking some students to the mall and you’re wearing the most gorgeous sundress. He makes a comment about never seeing this get up before while checking at your ass. You just shrug and say it’s new.

Forget those damn papers he gets up pulls you into him. Kissing you messily until you’re whining for him. He doesn’t wanna let you go but you don’t wanna keep the kids waiting and so he reluctantly loosens his grip. But not before slapping your ass loudly as you leave. He also tells you to buy more of those kinds of dresses with a wink. You tease him a little by trying on a few more at the mall and sending him pictures. Poor guy, you’re really gonna send him into cardiac arrest with those.

Old Man Logan -

He’s slightly ashamed because of the absolutely filthy thoughts in his head. He wants to take you on a nice date. It’s been forever since you had quality time together. He’s waiting for you and nearly chokes on his own spit seeing you all dolled up for him. He can’t stop playing with the hem of your dress as he drives. He kisses your cheek telling you how cute you look. He can tell you’re a little nervous because you don’t wear dresses much. He struggles to keep his hands to himself at lunch and you can tell. Its adorable seeing the wolverine so flustered at the sight of a dress

On the ride back you tell him he’s always your perfect gentleman and he tells you that the dress is making him think thoughts that aren’t as polite as you make him out to be. That sundress gets ripped when he gets a little too excited and Logan promises to buy you a new one. Fuck he’ll buy you hundreds more if you asked.

Worst Logan -

He lets you know how much he likes it right from the start. A low purr in settles in his throat the moment he lays his eyes on you. He’s very handsy as he pulls you into his chest. You ask if he likes it and he tells you he fucking loves it. He sneaks a peak down your dress and slips his hand up it once or twice. You scold him and tell him to behave and he just grins. Wade tells him to stop eye fucking you so loudly and Logan doesn’t care.

As the sun sets and the weather turns colder he’s got you close to him. Your back pressed against his chest and his hand wrapped around your waist. He pops a claw and slowly lifts the back of your dress up so that you shiver. He coos and tells you he’ll help you get real warm. Total perv hehe

musing on horror fiction and disability.

i've seen a lot of interesting discussion recently on whether or not disability horror is Okay (TM). the most common conclusion (from people who, like, care about ableism) is that disabled protags should Exist, but their disability shouldn't be the source of the horror, and should perhaps even help them survive. and there's been a lot of good horror fiction written around this specific concept!

it's a pretty sensible starting point because, like. disability Actually Exists. you don't want to write a story where the point is to gawk at an actual subsection of your readers n go "wow, GOD, that would suck!! how scary!! so glad it's not me!! okay byeeee"

On The Other Hand, though. when i write horror, i DEFINITELY plot using chronic illness and other disability-related stuff as a key source. so i'm musing on that.

people who already Know my horror work are gonna say "yeah, because you're writing from experience!! so you do it Right!!"

and if we're gonna set Rules (TM) on what narratives are or aren't done "right," then... yeah, i agree. i know what i'm doing and i will not stop doing it anytime soon, regardless of where the Discourse (TM) falls. but i'm trying to figure out what, specifically, makes it Right. you know??

so.

i think some of it is about knowing Why the thing is scary. the Why is what makes horror effective in the first place, anyway! if you know the Why, then you can lean into & manipulate your audience's feelings!

and sometimes the Why is just. shitty.

like, psycho is scary because crazy men in dresses with DID might kill you in the shower. split is scary for similar reasons. i'm trying to remember bad horror about physical disabilities but my mind is protecting me. let's just say, like, the whole subgenre about haunted hospitals with scary disabled patients. the PATIENTS are going to hurt you??? the PATIENTS??!!?!

but the Why re: disability isn't Always othering or cruel or inaccurate, imo.

sometimes being sick Is Scary. not gonna get too deep into it here, but like. it just is. it just fuckin' is. it's scary both internally and externally. the loss of control is scary. the loss of ability itself is scary; the consequences for that loss of ability are also scary. the loss of autonomy is scary. it's scary when doctors don't know what's wrong, and it's scary when they do. it's scary to undergo treatment, and it's scary not to have access to treatment. it's scary not to know what the future holds. it's all fucking scary!!

so like. the "why" in "why is it scary," for me at least, often boils down to "because it is Real."

disability is coming for everyone who's blessed with old age. disability is coming for a wide swath of much younger people, too. it is happening. that's a scary thing for people to reckon with on a personal level, and so it just seems sensible to me for this to crop up in horror.

what is scary about being sick?? take your pick. but for the love of god, ground it in truth.

then the Other thing is: i think you Have to know your audience. and i think you Have to assume a good portion of your audience Will share the disability in question.

i write my horror FOR chronically ill people. i don't really care about anyone else or anybody else's opinions.

and that's part of why stuff like psycho sucks -- the othering. the takeaway is "people like you are frightening and dangerous." another example that's not actually horror, but which Does hurt my feelings, is a little life by hanya yanagihara -- that book is engineered to tell all the disabled rape victims in the audience that the only sensible course for their lives is suicide.

but then, like. the episodes of the magnus archives dealing with hospitals and psychosis and addiction are Fucking Brilliant. because they're taking the Very Real Horror of those Very Real Experiences and telling the audience, "no, you're not crazy. that was fucked up. it was fucked up that it happened and it's fucked up that it still happens and you are right to feel violated. that's the horror here"

and like. that is!! SUCH an enormous comfort!! at least for some of us!!

so. i write about how being sick is fucked up. and i do it for the people who want someone to tell them, yeah, it sucks, it hurts, and it's fucked up.

not everybody wants this! many disabled people want The Exact Opposite of this in their horror stories. which is why the "disabled horror protag beats the slasher villain to death with their prosthetic leg" stuff rocks.

but different people want different things from their fiction.

for example, on a purely personal level, i can't Stand fluffy escapist fiction about no-ableism worlds where the disabled protags are all perfectly cared for n happy. it just makes me unhappy and upset about the world i'm currently living in.

but that specific genre is a lifeline for other people!!

so. anyway.

i don't know if any of this makes sense.

i will conclude by saying that i'm remembering something hank green said about how he only takes cancer advice from fellow cancer patients. his example was that if someone tells them weed helped with their chemo pain, he's like, thank you, that's great to know!! but if someone tells him to do weed for cancer bc they're.... just a stoner.... then he's like, "uh.... i do not care."

in that vein, i always always Always find it really valuable to hear from other people with the same kind of autoimmune diseases and degenerative illnesses i have/write -- those perspectives on horror/representation/visibility are Wonderful. (even when disagreeing with me!)

but if people's feedback amounts to "well, being sick Doesn't suck for me, so you should be more careful about writing sickness that sucks"

it's so hard to explain bear with me- BUT, your mind sees something, you'll persist, and it shows up, that's the thing, there's no "oh what if in my other reality-" that's shifting for a reason baby, once you set your foot on the reality you want it stays that way, and everything follows through.

ALRIGHT SO, hypnagogia is not forced, nor is it "trying to reach there", you simply always are in that state before you sleep without even knowing, hypnagogia is usually something that happens unaware when you DRIFT off to sleep, simply state and understand that no matter whatever you do, you STILL enter it, you just gotta stay aware of it and that's simply easy, i listed a HUGE range of methods ppl do to keep awake when they are trying for the hypnagogia, it's in my masterlist post ab the hypnagogia. but either way! if you WAIT on GOING IN THE HYPNAGOGIA, you're actually drifting further away from it, because you're keeping yourself awake further more or boring yourself which leads to sleeping, ACCEPT IT YOU'LL ENTER AND JUST LAY BACK AND WATCH, try the forearm method too, it's when you raise your forearm and if you sleep it'll wake you up when it falls.

OFC YOU CAN BE MY ANON, now, for racing thoughts, you can meditate beforehand if you like, OR! let the thoughts come and just observe them until it quietens down and goes blank, or i like to actually focus on somewhere on the ceiling first before trying and just looking at it until i feel everything drift off.

One really good thing I think Princess and the Dragon (and the Pristine Cut in general) added was how it changed the way the split between the harsh/soft princess reads (gonna be referring to them as Harsh and Soft for the rest of this post for simplicity).

Pre-Pristine Cut I saw a good amount of people (mostly on YouTube, I don't think I saw many here) commenting that they preferred the Harsh Princess because they felt that she was more genuine than Soft. This perception was arguably supported by their respective "free the princess" routes: in Prisoner the two of you have to work together to get out of the cabin, in Damsel you kind of just have to ignore your impulse to question things and rush out the door (I'm oversimplifying a bit, I know, bear with me). Between the Deconstructed Damsel ending, Shifty's description of her, and the overall more comedic tone of the route, the game sort of implied whatever relationship you have with Damsel (and by extension the Soft princess) isn't built on anything substantive.

However, I think the additions in the Pristine Cut help to challenge this. First, by expanding the Damsel route with Happily Ever After. In the leadup to Happily Ever After we see Damsel express discomfort with your suggestion to stay (though she'll still agree to it). This is a little thing, but it does help to show that she's still her own person with her own desires (which was a thing pre-pristine cut as well, this just makes it more explicit). HEA itself also helps to flesh out Damsel, and shows that her care for the player is genuine (even if your relationship in the route itself has gone downhill).

PATD also added a detail which completely recontextualized the "Harsh/Soft" Princess: namely, that the Princess can hear if you pick up the knife. Where before it was suggested that the Princess' behavior changed based on the blade because of the player's perception (if you take the blade you see her as a threat & vice versa), now instead it seems that her behavior changes depending on if she knows you're armed.

While you could still argue that the "soft" persona is a facade, I think this change highlights that the "harsh" princess is one as well. If Soft is "acting" sweet to prove that she's harmless and convince you to let her go, Harsh is trying to show that she's dangerous to discourage you from killing her. Her dialogue when convincing you to drop the knife emphasizes this (paraphrasing): "I'm probably locked down here for a reason, right? Best not to risk finding out what I can do." This isn't to say that either version of the Princess isn't "real" or that she "doesn't have a personality" - I think both versions are being genuine, they're just also unsure if they can trust you.

This change also made reuniting with the Heart Princess at the end of the game even more meaningful for me - it's the first time the two of you can speak openly with one another on equal terms.

DRIVING MY LOVE - Anri GOSH her entire TIMELY!! album is amazing, but this is the song that's been sticking in my mind the most lately. Citypop is a very fun genre of music that came about in Japan in the 70's, and Anri had (to me) some of the most fun songs in the genre :>

New River and Soap - The Oh Hellos OH BOY OH BOY THE OH HELLOS!!! I LOVE this band!!!!! If you were on art social media a couple years ago you probably have heard Soldier, Poet, King, which is by and large their most popular song. New River is one of my go-to songs when I am going through it. Absolutely love the imagery of the song, allowing new and difficult experiences carve new landscape through yourself. Soap, it is important to note, is the culmination of their four-part EP series Four Winds, and is kind of the resolution to that whole series of songs. It's really interesting and worth looking into! I must note that this is a Christian band in case you find that uncomfortable, but I would still recommend checking them out even if you do- the Four Winds EPS focus specifically on their struggles with God amidst the uh. Bad US Political Climate and all that. Most of their music on the topic is pointed and metaphorical (see: Passerine) and so that knowledge isn't super necessary to enjoy the music, I just think it's neat :] And not every song necessarily touches on the subject- these two specifically don't! Also I GOT TICKETS TO SEE THEM THIS YEAR LETS GOOOOO sorry this section is so long i just really like this band

No More What Ifs - Persona 5 Royal, covered by the 8 Bit Big Band Ok back on track lol. This song is absolutely my favorite from the game, but MAN THIS COVER. The 8BBB is one of the best video game cover bands out there imo, and they COMPLETELY outdid themselves with this one. They actually added a few extra lyrics to the song to better round out the overarching theme of both it and the game and MAN. i will never listen to another version again. The album this will be a part of isn't out yet sadly, but I would 100% recommend checking out their other stuff!

Bones in the Ocean (2023 vers.) - Longest Johns There's a lot to be said about this one but it's best if you just listen to it tbh. I will say that this is a new recording of one of the band's first original shanties, and that it includes all former and current members. Would highly recommend all the other songs on this album too, aside from this song it's a very fun listen! But ourgh this song,,,, if i had time I'd make a dozen animatics for it

'Tis Autumn - Nat "King" Cole Trio There's only one song to kick off the fall season and it's absolutely this one! Also The Autumn Leaves, which Nat King actually sung in Japanese once which is cool. He was an incredible musician and all of his songs are great, but Tis Autumn is probably my favorite :>

Catch You Catch Me (Card Captor Sakura OP) - Gumi Do you want to get ready in the morning feeling like a magical girl? Boy howdy do I have a song for YOU! Seriously the amount of people I've shown this song to under that premise who have come to me the next day saying that it worked is a lot lol. Card Captor Sakura has been a big comfort show for me and MAN the music is *chefs kiss*, especially the OPs!!! Linked the full song, but I would also recommend watching the opening itself :D

#41 - Dave Matthews Band "wow you like dave matthews lol thats such dad music" ok listen. I have been listening to DMB since before I was born. Saying I'm biased is probably an understatement here. But his songs are very good and I like them ok. Anyways #41 is a really stupid name for a song but I love the band in it, the weird lyrics, just the overall jazziness of it. If you wanna listen to more Dave stuff I would highly recommend the stuff from his solo concerts with Tim Reynolds- its just 2 guys jamming out on guitars, it's great. Stuff like One Sweet World, Still Water, Grey Street (This one's a tough listen for me but I love it). For the fun full band stuff I love So Much to Say, Ants Marching, just the older albums in general

Stay I Pray You - Anastasia (The Musical) I am allowing myself ONE (1) musical song. My sister is a huge musical fan and an even bigger Russian History nerd and an even BIGGER Bolshevik Revolution nerd so I watched Anastasia with her a lot growing up. Eventually they made the musical and it's actually tied for my favorite (Phantom is pretty hard to beat)! I got to see it tour and MAN. all the music is amazing, but this to me is the standout song- largely because this song, despite not being in the movie, actually was kinda in the movie- there's this bit in In the Dark of the Night that they took and made into a completely different song which is a fun nod to the movie!!

Music to Soothe The Savage Snake Plant - Mort Garson Got overwhelmed by my options at this point so I'm defaulting to one of my favorites! I believe another song off this album got popular recently, but I will forever know this one from it being used in the final scene in The Adventure Zone, my first and favorite DnD podcast! Honestly I could recommend a dozen songs from the podcast, but this one in particular always sticks out to me. While I'm here you should also go listen to The Adventure Zone, it's a great podcast, especially their first story (Balance, just start at the bottom lol).

Revenant is soooo mid which is disappointing because I was looking forward to it due to the actors and writer (this isn’t a flop like Jirisan, which I gave up on after 2–3 episodes, but it’s not really good).
