I’m gonna say something controversial, but maybe Bridgerton wouldn’t have felt the need to rush Penelope and Colin’s season to screen if the show had a cable release schedule.
The show said they pushed Polin to season 3 because they felt audiences were getting impatient to see their love story resolved, which may be true, but they wouldn’t be so antsy after only two seasons if there weren’t two years between each of them. Yes, season 2 had to wait on COVID, and season 3 had to wait on the writer’s/actor’s strike, but they’ve said that season 4 will come out 2026 at best without any exterior obstacles, and they’ve just now convened the writer’s room (after season 3’s full release). I don’t watch many Netflix shows, but seeing as this is how they operate with TV, I don’t know how many people are going to continue sticking around for what will be an 8-season show (if they’re allowed to finish) with two years between everything when they’re already expressing discontent over the fact they have to wait so long, and often forget characters’ names and arcs but are unwilling to rewatch the entire show every time just to remember what happened one season ago. Audiences are finally reaching the point where they’re unsatisfied with 8 episodes every two years (often, in many show’s cases, with half an hour or less per episode), and with shows like Bridgerton losing production quality and poorly handling the source material (see: keeping Penelope and Colin’s core conflict over her being Lady Whistledown, but removing the context around it and providing a weaker argument, or having Francesca fall for Michael/a while being married to John, inadvertently playing into biphobic stereotypes and harming both characters’ love for John and their grief over his eventual death/guilty feelings for falling in love once he’s gone).
While there are things I love that the show changed (making the Bridgerton men much more appealing love interests, adding Queen Charlotte and her miniseries, creating a relevant but not central storyline regarding race equality in alternate England, LGBTQ+ rep, and, more recently, giving Lady Danbury more backstory), the main storyline has started suffering, especially in season 3. I’m not saying 22-episode shows with yearly releases don’t also decline over time, but they also aren’t expected to garner a massive following immediately upon release or face cancellation - or, if they are widely popular, to string fans along for far longer than necessary to retain subscribers for less, subpar content.

"Michael fell first Fran loved John they ruined the books waaa" and????????
Daphne was never the diamond of the season, she was on her second saison and had zero prospect and was perpetually friend zoned which is why she even made that deal with the Duke in the first place
Anthony never proposed to Edwina, he and Kate were caught in a compromising position and got married, the whole wedding drama Edwina figuring out their love during her own wedding thing wasn't in the book
Penelope was 28, officially a spinster, had made money and quite a reputation for so many years as Lady Whistledown, she was so much more mature by the time she and Colin fell in love and got married
Benedict was a fucking asshole, seriously I had to dnf the book he was so awful, Benedict in the show is a sweetheart, he's a little shit and has a wicked sense of humor, but he's a sweetheart. Book Benedict can fall off a cliff and die
All of these details fundamentally changed the dynamics between the characters yet no one was complaining then. The minute we get sapphic rep suddenly everyone is a book purist. Franny fell first, for a gorgeous black woman named Michaela, and we're going to see their whole love story unfold, and it's going to be different from the book, and it's going to be beautiful. Choke on it.
Happy pride fellow sapphic nerds 🌈

I Have Evolving Thoughts on Fran’s Sexuality
Tumblr media
(god hannah dodd is so pretty)
First of all let’s thank GOD francesca is the queer sister and not…that other one.
Anyways upon my initial viewing of part 2 I definitely read Fran as bisexual and if you continue to read her as such I think that’s fine but my mind has changed on the matter.
I believe that Fran is actually a lesbian suffering from comphet.
The reason this actually started to seem likely to me is because of her wedding scene with John. The whole season I thought they seemed so taken with one another and I enjoyed their quiet dynamic. They were more than comfortable sitting in silence with one another and seemed to grow closer in that way.
I like many others assumed this meant their love was romantic, but that kiss
Tumblr media
Would a woman who is attracted to men make this face after kissing the man she loves? I don’t think so. Some people seem to think it’s because she’s shy but it doesn’t seem like she’s even thinking about her family here. It seems like she has retreated into her own thoughts. It seems like she was disappointed. And after spending the whole season feeling nothing for any of the men she meets why wouldn’t she be. She met a man she loved and she kissed him and she didn’t feel those sparks.
Now Fran is also autistic coded so this initially affected the way I viewed her relationships as well, but all of that changes when you take into account Michaela.
Tumblr media
Francesca immediately starts to stutter and is flustered when she sees Michaela. We have never seen Fran act this way with a man, even her husband. It wasn’t for no reason that Violet describes how she felt the first time she fell in love with Edmund and then almost immediately after Fran reacts the same way to Michaela. The butterflies, not being able to string a sentence together. This was foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
Some people were upset because they said it erased everything Fran said about having a quiet love and that is somewhat true, but I disagree with people saying that it erases slowly built love when Polin’s whole story is about love not striking you like a bolt of lightning.
None of this is to say she can’t love John, I believe she does I just feel it is platonic, and the loss of John would hit hard even if he was her best friend. John is one of the great loves of her life but who is to say that love is romantic? Friendships are the foundation of our lives and they are equally as important as any romantic relationship. Fran met someone who understands her and is like her, that doesn’t mean she has to have romantic attraction for him.
Some of this is affected by personal bias as I am a late-blooming lesbian, but holy shit the way I relate to Fran wanting to get married just because it would mean she wouldn’t have to pursue any other relationships with men and the way she was willing to accept whoever the Queen deemed fit because she didn’t have any criteria except “is kind to me”. Fran does not seem to be searching for love as she has not felt it before. The closest she comes is with John because the two of them are so similar and I believe she thought that because she liked him so much that she must be in love with him which is just so…lesbian coded I don’t know how to explain it.
Tumblr media
This isn’t to say bisexuality isn’t real or is “just a phase”. Ew. Gross. No. This is just the way I am interpreting the character with the information we have now. If it comes out definitely that she is bisexual then I will accept that, sapphic rep is so needed.
All in all they look so good and I can’t wait to see these queers kiss and have a romance.
Also I think that Michaela still could have fallen first. Fran just realized she was a dyke at that exact moment and her brain stopped working which is valid. But did you see the way Michaela looked at her. I KNOW A LESBIAN FALLING IN LOVE WHEN I SEE ONE.

RAMBLING THOUGHTS AFTER FINISHING PART TWO. GONNA ADDRESS MY P1 THOUGHTS FIRST. SPOILER WARNING.
1 & 2: I think Debling could’ve worked in the second half, and I’m kinda sad Cressida didn’t get a happy ending. The Creloise fell of a CLIFF after ep 5 but I think it could still be saved
5: no cishet man has ever loved his wife more than Anthony Bridgerton I’m gonna be ill
6 & 12: kanthony’s absence was felt BAD in the finale, I think their reactions to LW were sorely needed. Also Jonny and Simone have both said they’ll be at every sibling’s wedding and stick around for years but they missed Francesca’s??? Also felt their absence too much then. They’re both booked and busy I think we’ll continue to only get a couple episodes a season from them
8: Francesca did get to thrive happy in pt 2 my baby I love her
9: I think they managed to disconnect the mondrich plot even further like 😭 once again, I don’t mind them their plot just feels very empty
10: Pen and Delacroix CONTINUE to be my fave duo I love them so freaking much and they can never get rid of it
13: Portia’s growth this season continued to be 10/10 I loved her and Penelope’s relationship it really showed what it’s like to be closely related to people you oppose and the process of needing to forgive and understand them for your own peace of mind
14: that was not how I was expecting Colin to find out about Whistledown
15: Marcus felt a little rushed in part two but I think I need to watch the whole season together to fully decide
17: this was indeed the longest 27 days of my life I got Covid day after it dropped lmfao
MY ~NEW~ THOUGHTS:
We finally got character development from Cressida and if they write her out I’ll be inconsolable (as will Jessica Madsen)
I hope they paid Golda Rosheuvel good for her feet exposure. Worth more than titties in this economy
I feel the need to tell everyone that £5000 in 1815 is in the realm of £500,000 today and we cannot brush over the fact Penelope has made herself the equivalent of a literal millionaire
Anthony has two moods ‘I’m obsessed with my wife’ ‘I want to win this game’ like it is comical how drastically different his facial expression is in the game of charades compared to pretty much every other scene
Anthony saying the marriage is perfect and not hard work and Kate being like BOY I will humble you,,,, doing the lord’s work I love her so much
At some points I felt like Francesca was fighting Anthony for ‘Violet’s least favourite child’ award lmao
John saying he’s off to look at the wainscotting was unfairly funny
Cressida in the red dress is even better than I imagined fuck even if she’s not gay then I am
Peneloise back together the universe is healing I love my babies all we need now is creloise lovers and peneloise friendship simultaneously I don’t like it being one or the other sue me
However much Brimsley is getting paid isn’t enough,,,, Hugh Sachs the man that you are
I adored Penelope’s wedding dress so much and as bitter as I am still about no kanthony wedding in s2, it felt kind of right somehow for Polin to be the first wedding we properly see in this show
Most of the costumes and makeup feel like they got worse,,,,, big ‘I hired a 14 year old’ energy. I don’t need historical accuracy but I would like a modicum of care and the costume/hair/makeup dept looking at a single historical reference from before 1850,,,, please
We all got the bi Benedict we’ve been asking for and I appreciate it, and recognise that he needed Tilley to explore that, but I still would’ve preferred if they first main queer experience was not a threesome
If they go straight into benophie in s4 (which idk, I’m so torn bc I feel like F, E and B all could work well next season) then I also feel like bi Benedict was just them throwing a bone for 5 mins but meant nothing
The CONTENTIOUS Michaela Stirling,,,,, I was undecided until I saw it but that was the definition of gay panic from Francesca and it worked so well I am so excited.
As your resident peerage expert, it is much easier for women to inherit titles in Scotland than England so I wonder (not that anyone on this show knows anything) if that was a reason they chose Francesca to be sapphic [general peerage info and female inheritance info if you care]
On the above, if they can canonically end racism with one marriage then they can end homophobia with one marriage as well
We all know Eloise was the easy and obvious choice to be the queer love story but part of me does kind of like them not taking the easy route, and them going something more unexpected, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want Creloise/Sapphic El like they had eight children let’s be honest
Finch’s sneeze and Phillips’s “now Varely! The bugs!” were unfairly funny
Everything Lady Danbury said to Penelope about suspecting her and what not felt very in character and you can fight with the wall idc
Did they tell us the name of Polin’s baby boy???
Hyacinth saying she thinks of Gregory as the family pet,,,,, girl you an icon walking amongst mere mortals
Predictions I got right:
Anthony didn’t kill Colin, but “are you gonna duel your own brother” lmao I was on the right track
I knew Polin would win the Featherington baby race and I love that for them (but why were Prudence and Phillipa pregnant most of the season, barely showing, Kate was showing almost immediately, and then in the epilogue the sisters all had baby’s similar-ish ages???? Give the writers room a calendar please)
I SAID FROM DAY DOT THAT THE FURNITURE THEY BROKE FROM SEX WAS A CHAISE I CANT FIND THE POST BUT I KNEW IT I FUCKING KNEW IT WHERE DO I COLLECT MY PRIZE SOME OF YOUR GUESSES WERE TRULY FUCKING COOKED
Okay that was too long if you made it this far I’ll make you cookie ily

Back to Bridgerton hot-takes, Colin’s friendships edition:
I hate the Michaela-Colin fanon friendship dynamic where she roasts him all the time because we literally just saw a season where Colin tried to be friends with guys who snark on him and it made him miserable AND tbh I already get that dynamic in a more loving form with Colin and Eloise. Roasting someone with love is something you have to earn in a friendship, and the Colin & Eloise pairing only just reached the right balance in S3 where they were able to do it in a way that didn’t veer into genuine animosity or bullying.
I actually didn’t like Michael in the book (sorry Michael fans, but I’m already way more optimistic about Michaela winning me over than Michael, Masali was charming from her first moment) but I’m really over Colin’s “barely tolerated” era, I’m ready to see him be loved and appreciated.
The Michaela-Colin friendship dynamic in fan spaces also falls into playing up this idea that Colin is a huge idiot when he’s not. I know people are trying to replicate the vibe they had in WHWW with Michael but with Michaela, but it really does not work anymore with the show version of Colin PLUS in the fanon version of Michaela and Colin, a lot of the back and forth and Colin’s helpfulness is removed, and it’s just “let’s give Colin a friend who’s mean to him for comedy reasons.” And seriously, even in WHWW the dynamic was more about Michael being annoyed that Colin was so happy while he was yearning and miserable, not about Colin being dumb and Michael being so much smarter. This actually would hit even harder in the show with Michaela seeing other couples get to be openly happy and in love, while hiding hers or feeling guilty about John.
Since Colin has married his actual best friend, I’d prefer to see is friend group be John, Will, and Phillip and to see better use of his relationships with his siblings like Benedict, Eloise and Francesca. As someone who misses matchmaker Colin and would love to see him give Michaela advice like in the book (although I fear the show will give that moment away to some other character besides Colin) I could enjoy a Michaela-Colin friendship, but I just can’t with the toxic friend energy. If they are friends, then please let them be friendly?

Okay, I think I realized what it is about Bridgerton that has made it so popular and why messing with the story to the point where the Bridgertons may not end up with the person they did in the books could be their downfall.
Please hear me out.
They've recently announced that Eloise might also be getting a queer storyline, which I'm sure no one is surprised by, including myself. Benedict having a queer storyline is not surprising either and makes sense with his character (but for the love of God, Benedict, please stop being the community bicycle, at this point, he's had so many lovers that I'm starting to worry for Sophie's future health)
Francesca getting a queer storyline (changing Micheal to Michaela) is not an issue in the grand scheme of things. It's how they went about introducing it.
Francesca's story was beautiful and tragic because of how much she and John loved each other and then losing the child that would've been theirs (John and Fran's) after he died. How she mourned him for years and then slowly fell for Michael years later when he's been in love with her since day one but had too much love and respect for both her and John to do anything about it.
The show creating this sense that Francesca might have regrets about marrying John and then meeting Michaela and becoming seemingly smitten with her cheapens the story they could've had later on. It's almost like the show wanted us to root for John dying so that Francesca and Michaela can get together. If you're going to do an LGBT+ story, even as an adaptation to a heteronormative story, do it! But do it properly. It is not fair to your characters to give them such a cheap start.
This is where the show's downfall could happen because part of the appeal of the show (in my opinion) is knowing who the characters will end up with and that they will be together.
We spend so much time and dread with other media with their "will-they-won't-they" storylines that half the time we can't enjoy the journey. With Bridgerton, I think half the fun is that we can take in all the drama knowing that things will be alright in the end. Like I don't think I could've enjoyed Season 3 as much as I did if I hadn't known that Penelope and Colin would end up together.
Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter. I honestly think they have good ideas when it comes to adapting future stories. They just need to make they have good execution.

hello have not been on here in literal years and reactivated simply to post my modern bridgerton hcs that came to me as i was falling asleep would not let me go until i wrote them down! enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~
the entire family is still very much british upper class - they regularly interact with the royals and attend all the family event like wimbledon and ascot. they are regularly featured in the pages of the tabloids much to their annoyance. they also went to either oxford, cambridge, or st. andrew’s (franny)
- anthony - still who he is, took over edmund’s position in the family business. huge company either a law firm, business like real estate or holdings. he’s ceo and damn good at his job. still viscount but it is really in name only.
- kate - still very much who she is, i can see her either going very much a lawyer or the artist route but i like to think of her as leaving her art as a hobby that she does simply for the pleasure of it.
- benedict - artist can do either painting or photography but has become very famous for it, initially it was because of the family name but then people started seeing his talent for what it is. his photos have been featured a bunch of times in british vogue and he is one of their go to photographers.
- sophie - very much a primary school teacher because of her experience with araminta as a child she was determined to not let that happen for other children so she makes damn sure that while they are at school in her class they know some one is looking out for them.
- colin - travel writer. he works for some magazine and has his own column. the magazine is owned by like some big media company that has their own building.
- penelope - pen works for a different magazine that is owned by the same parent company as colin’s so they work in the same building when colin is not on assignment. she secretly still runs lady whistledown that is like deux moi and once she gets outed she starts her own mini media empire. still besties with eloise.
- daphne - she is very much the perfect socialite philanthropist that is so perfect she seems like she would be a bitch but truly is that nice. is still married to simon after they fake dated due to some media scandal. lives her absolute best WAG life and has the season down to a science.
- simon - is a huge sports star, think david beckham. technically was still the duke but officially gave up the title to piss off his father. this man was born to be girl dad.
- eloise - once she realized just how much privilege she has, she put her money where her mouth is and is constantly going to protests much to anthony’s annoyance (not because he doesn’t agree with the cause just because she is giving the family a bad name in the press, he actually super proud of her.) el went to school for a degree in women and gender studies and is super involved in academia when not getting arrested.
- phillip/a - a botany professor at the university where el is based out of. still has the kids from their previous relationship with marina but they were able to get a divorce because it is the 21st century and co parent the twins quite well. their gender honestly doesn’t matter for this, they love plants and eloise - the order of that is not important.
- francesca - autistic, it is important to me that you know that. she is a film composer, she loves getting to create the score for movies and that it doesn’t require that much human interaction.
- john - still unfortunately passes away, but prior to that was some kind of finance guy. was generally the nicest guy and loved fran with his entire heart.
- michael/michaela - hot. like the most beautiful human being you have ever laid eyes on. they work as an actor because it’s fun but secretly are insanely smart and like build computers for fun.
- gregory - anthony’s mini me and he wouldn’t have it any other way. he works for the family company and loves it. generally small bean like but is insanely tall, like taller than benedict much to everyone’s annoyance but no one more than hyacinth. he worships the ground lucy walks on but they only have three or four kids because they have access to birth control.
- lucy - a mini kate. also a lawyer who’s family firm got bought by kate’s and then started working under her where she eventually met greg when he was visiting his favorite sister kate for their monthly lunch date. has ocd.
- hyacinth - a child prodigy, started university at like 15 (which she never lets greg forget) works as a ta (or whatever the uk equivalent is) for agatha who is an old family friend through whom she meets gareth. her field is like archeology or some other super niche thing. (agatha does not have to teach, she does it because if she doesn’t how else will the new generation ever be taught the right way to do things)
- gareth - is so fucking chill but absolutely matches hyacinths freak. no one is quite sure what he does, he has explained it many times but no one truly knows even hyacinth.
- violet - was besties with princess diana (old money england) she unfortunately passes around the same time as edmund and she just loses it. luckily it is the modern days was able to get help but it took a little while. though once she is back on her feet she is a force to be reckoned with. she runs the family foundation which focuses on mental health and allergy awareness.
thank you for reading this! i will take no criticism at this time but welcome any addition thoughts!
All the people who say that Franchael's story will obviously remain the same despite the change in genre and that we cannot judge on the only scene of Michaela's appearance that we have seen, the opposite... Except yes.
Literally the entire basis of their story has already changed.
It is insinuated that Fran not shares true true love with John through Violet, who describes her meeting with Edmund as ultimately what happens to Fran with Michaela.
Without forgetting the face Fran made after sharing her first kiss with John...
I remind you that basically, Fran is not supposed to have an immediate crush on Michael. And that she's supposed to love John. She only sees Michael as a friend during the time John is alive and even it seems to me still 3 / 4 years after he died.
The point of the story is about second chances at love. Fran loves John as much as Michael, just differently.
There, it seems that she made a mistake by marrying John and that she does not share true love with him and worse, it seems that Fran already has immediate feelings for Michaela.
The whole basis of the story is changed.
Not to mention the fact that I am convinced that changes will only come one after another in the future.
So no, this story will not be the same, basically (since we know that the Netflix version always takes quite a lot of freedom anyway) as in the book.
She already isn't.
My only gripe is that I really bought into the tragedy of John and Francesca finding that one person who understood them without ever speaking a word, finding love when Francesca at least didn’t expect it, only for John to die young and devastate Franny (and us) so now I feel stupid because that wasn’t the story they were setting up at all!
I loved the set up so much, I had confidence they’d do Francesca/Michaela gracefully too (I believed the spoilers so had been expecting the gender bend for months), but now that I know it likely wasn’t romantic love Franny felt for John and that she fell at first sight for Michaela, I have concerns about how the two women will be characterized and if they’ll be able to do justice to John too. Oh well.
Thank you for all your insights and of course, your beautiful stories. You’re a treasure. 💛
I think this is the thing that’s made me most disappointed about the change.
It’s actually not Michaela at all. There’s plenty of avenues for them moving forward. Their story is all about anguished pining. It’s actually sort of perfect. It’s the fact that they’ve made Francesca fall first.
That’s… the literal opposite of her arc in the books. The way she slowly falls for Michael is so beautiful. But no. She was thunderstruck.
And Violet Bridgerton was right. I am once more living in a world where Violet Bridgerton is right. It’s actually almost too much to bear.
Yes to everything this person has said! And I've already gone over the whole Michaela thing myself, but to add onto this and sort of reiterate really briefly in regards to her claim on Kilmartin, Scotland also has different inheritance laws from England and there is very much a precedent of women inheriting their own lands and titles, albeit a rare one from what I could find. Julia Quinn herself made a statement regarding the change and also talked about Francesca's love for John, and even if you still want to bring the book itself into this, the author even admitted that she hadn't thought much of Francesca and Michael having children together until after the book had originally been published, so make of that what you will.
SO's Guide to the Bridgerton Children so @coffeegleek can tell them apart ;)
Violet Bridgerton
Tumblr media
Okay, so first of all this is the mom of all these children. Her husband was Edmund. He got stung by a bee and died, so he is no longer around.
Anthony Bridgerton
Tumblr media
Okay, so the oldest son is Anthony. He is the current Viscount (don't ask me about British nobility, I know nothing) and is currently running the Bridgerton estate, though that is not his favorite thing to do. He had very unfortunate sideburns in season one. And he likes to shout things like "you are the bane of my existence" and "LILACS". He does have oldest child syndrome where he acts like he doesn't want to be in charge, but he totally loves being in charge and telling everyone what to do.
Tumblr media
His wife is Kate Sharma. She is a delight, and possibly the second best character on this show (obviously after Penelope). So just remember, passionate and loud guy with Kate -- that is Anthony. Oh, and they have one child who is being born in India because Jonathan Bailey is apparently very in demand right now.
Benedict Bridgerton
Tumblr media
Benedict is the artsy, bisexual who hangs out on the swings with Eloise. He is an actual delight, but the writers don't seem to really know what to do with him. He makes a good comedic foil to Anthony. Also they cut his hair for seasons 2 and 3 which doesn't help the whole looking the same thing. We're speculating his season is next because of a bunch of hints. In the books he falls in love with a lower class girl.
Colin Bridgerton
Tumblr media
Colin is the sweet, sensitive (most likely demisexual) writer and world traveler. He's got some insecurity issues, a massive hero complex, and is a complete simp for his wife.
HOW HAVE YOU FOLLOWED ME FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS AND NOT KNOW WHO COLIN IS - C'MON GIRL, PAY ATTENTION
Tumblr media
He is married to Penelope Featherington, aka Lady Whistledown, aka the best damn character on this whole show. 90% of the time, Colin is hanging off Penelope, so he honestly should be easy to spot. Also, he got her pregnant BEFORE the wedding and little Lord Feathertington was born 8 months into their marriage.
Daphne Bridgerton
Tumblr media
She was the main character of Season 1, who looks a lot like Keira Knightly. You don't really need to worry about her, because it's doubtful that she's coming back.
Tumblr media
She is married to the Duke - Simon Basset, Lord of Hastings or something. He enjoys licking spoons. Daphne burns for him. Again, he's not coming back so, you know, I wouldn't worry about it.
They do have a child together, a little boy I believe and I think they hinted at a second one? Idk, maybe the kids will come back to hang out with Gregory and Hyacinth at the end of the series.
Eloise Bridgerton
Tumblr media
Probably my personal favorite Bridgerton? (Idk, Colin wormed his way up there.) She stands out because Claudia Jessie is just amazing at giving her a lot quirky mannerisms. She doesn't want to get married and is really into women's rights. She is also fucking hilarious. I would love her to be asexual, but the writers insist she's getting a love story at some point, so.... The internet would prefer her to be a lesbian. That's cool, too, but also unlikely to happen.
Eloise spends a lot of her time on swings with Benedict and in is often the third wheel with Pen and Colin (though sometimes Colin is that third wheel).
Tumblr media
She and Penelope are BFFs. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!
Francesca Bridgerton
Tumblr media
Francesca is SUPER into the piano(forte) and really nothing else. There's really not a whole lot to say about her other than she IS probably going to be the lesbian of the show.
Tumblr media
She is currently married to John Stirling. The two are very quiet together and that's exactly how they want it. Don't get too attached to him, he's most likely going to die in the next season. John also has a female cousin named Michaela, whom the internet is mad about because she is a woman -- making Francesca's future love interest a woman instead of a man. I say more power to the lesbians. Calm your tits folks, it'll be fine.
Gregory Bridgerton
Tumblr media
OMG, look how adorable this kid is. He's gonna look just like his older brothers when he grows up. They've already given him a tad more to do in Season 3, and he's been an utter delight. I'm sure he'll be great leading Season 8 when we get to it in 2034.
Hyacinth Bridgerton
Tumblr media
The youngest Bridgerton! She is excitable and energetic and super excited about all the marriages and also KNOWS who is ending up with who and is totally down for it. She is also a sassy delight and really can't wait until she starts holding her own with Eloise!
THERE YOU GO THAT'S THE WHOLE BRIDGERTON FAMILY - DOES THAT HELP??
okey im gonna say it.
I hate how they introduced Michaela. No, i dont care she is girl, I actually like the change. However, the fact that the made Francesca fall in love at first sight is so unnecessary. Not only go against of what makes their relationship so special (Michaela falling in love first and having to conceal her feelings) but also I hate the fact that they are making it seems as Violet was right about love always having to be dramatic, forceful and quick (Especially about that beautiful mother and daughter moment they shared before the wedding). And sure, maybe is my ace side talking, but Im so so so tired of that narrative and I was so happy to see Francesca and John having a different type of love…. and then they make her fall in love at first sight AT BASICALLY HER WEDDING with another person. "oH she didnt liked the kiss bc she dosent actually love him/she likes girls", okey sure, maybe, but that wasnt Francesca. She loved John. She really did. Romantically. And their love was easy, and calm. And yes, after her grief she also loved Michael/Michaela. Why did they need to make it seems like her love for John wasnt that strong/real?
idk, it feels so inappropriate, and god, I can't get pass how much I hate that narrative of love having to be dramatic. They could have develop their romance in Francesca season, there was not need of showing that now.
Why Sophie won't be genderbent, exploring sexuality in Bridgerton
I've gathered some evidence for why Sophie will not be genderbent in S4. None of these are confirmed, of course, but I think this should help to alleviate concerns.
Probably the most obvious - they've already risked a lot by gender bending one character (Michael), so I don't foresee them doing it again.
Directly tied to reason 1, the show already made a change from Book!Benedict this season by making him canon bisexual. That is already one substantial change, and I personally don't see them giving both Francesca and Benedict gender bent endgames.
Directly tied to Benedict's sexuality, there is one particular scene that stands out a lot: during Benedict's last conversation with Tilley, he explicitly says that gender does not matter to him.
"Paul could be Patricia, or Polly, or Peter, or all three at once."
I'd argue this was included 1) to convey his sexuality directly to the audience through dialogue itself, 2) to highlight his concept of freedom, and 3) to emphasize that this experience is a bisexual (pansexual, potentially) awakening, not a homosexual one. I've noticed a standard in media to give characters an LGBTQ+ experience that confirms to them that they've never really liked the other gender (in this case, women) all along, they were just "playing pretend." But what we know very well by now from Benedict is that he doesn't play by society's game. If he was not attracted to women, he would not have been pursuing them for so long. Benedict having an LGBTQ+ experience this season makes him so happy because he's finally grasping at the freedom he once found in art. There is a lightness to Benedict in the last two episodes of S3 because he's broken through a barrier, admitted to a core part of himself, and lived the way he wants to, away from the watchful eye of society, in direct opposition to what society deems "appropriate."
Contrast Benedict's sexuality to what we've seen of Francesca, who has never expressed such explicit interest in both genders. Up to this point, she is a societal conformant, and we witness her struggle with that. While I do think she harbors deep feelings of love for John, her last scene with Michaela indicates that her love for him isn't romantic. It's also important to note - Benedict has had previous experience with a gay man; as far as we know, Francesca has never interacted with a member of the LGBTQ+ community and thus does not carry that same knowledge. As we've seen with other plots in Bridgerton, women were not often privy to the same knowledge and experiences as men (shielded, so to speak), and so her understanding of sexuality could be understandably limited.
4. Went off on a tangent there, but the final reason why I don't think Sophie will be genderbent: Sophie's identity as a bastard and maid derives conflict from her gender. Men, even illegitimate ones of wealthy families, were typically fairly well-off. I hardly think the bastard son of an Earl would be immediately cast out and turned into a maid or servant. Additionally, Jess Brownell has indicated that she doesn't want to mess with the books "too much," and while she's made some gender and sexuality changes, I do not foresee her changing something so pivotal. For this backstory to present conflict, Sophie must remain a woman.
