"Our Constellation" is a homebrew tabletop session run by my polycule and I. I am the DM, and this game is a little passion project for us. To help others join the experience by listening in every Wednesday and watching the world grow, we've started a small little discord server to host our sessions live!
In this modern fantasy, a party of 3 retired and now rehired heroes work for an elf named Calavash Spiece, who runs his family company at his manor with his brother Coriander. It's sort of like a fantasy Buc-ees. For some reason he's hiring adventurers now, and not just chefs to work at the in-manor tavern. I hope those weird portals opening up around the world have nothing to do with it. Those are scary! Listen in to our live little podcast, and become immersed in this world with us!
Sessions are 8:00PM weekly EST, and in the session channel, listeners will be muted to give a non-overwhelming experience. We even have a little chat room if you'd like to say something while listening! Hope to see you there, and safe travels through the continents of Arbor!
JOIN OUR humble little server below! Feel free to share your own fantasy tabletop OCs as well! We love to hear from other creators! <3 You must be an adult to join, as the topics in the session may be disturbing to some listeners.
we're only accepting up to 25 members with this link - and if everything goes well, we'll remake the link so more of you can join in! so hop in the tavern while it's hot! tomorrow 9/25/24 will be our first live session with an audience! <3
TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNINGS BELOW! [they're in the server rules channel too but just in case!]
in-character yelling [if a character is angry, we scream as the character. I know this may be common knowledge that tabletop fantasy roleplay has drama and loud scenes as we act them out, but some may not know! we love each other irl, and we are not actually angry. we're at the same table with each other as we play!]
substance use [characters and npcs in game may use stimulants or ingest alcohol]
fantasy violence
body horror
abusive relationships [manipulation, sibling enmeshment - all that usually comes with conflict or dark fantasy/media.]
mentions of injuries
trauma recovery
humorous mlm divorce drama [two party members are divorced]
fictional children in dangerous situations [there may be kid NPCs that have to be rescued!]
cult mentions / interactions [run by a DM who is a cult survivor.]
overall, despite these warnings, Our Constellation is an adventure comedy, and we strive for a happy ending for every character.

Any ttrpgs with a distinctive “grunge” aesthetic?
THEME: Grunge
Hello friend, I’m really glad you asked this question! Grunge feels like it fits indie ttrpg design so well, because so much of it emphasizes low-budget, DIY and messy styles. As a style of music, I understand grunge is about being dissonant, dark, and “ugly. As a theme, what I understand about grunge is that it’s about alienation, isolation, and disenchantment with how society is right now, which is so so relevant to how we feel about our current quality of life right now.
That being said, there’s so much that can be explored in grunge, I feel like there’s a lot of different pieces that could make a work “grunge’. So while I think the games that I’m presenting here all fit some element of grunge, some of them might not fit the elements of grunge that you’re looking for.
Games by Adam Vass.
Adam’s games are often nihilistic, horrific, and creatively designed with mixed media, visual distortion, and a focus on the grotesque or the weird. This includes No Future, a time loop game about punks throwing one last party, Born To Die, a pamphlet ttrpg about anthropomorphic animals in a post-human waste world, and Cybermetal 2012, a lo-fi metal cyberpunk game about surviving in an isolated city of warped technology.
If you love horror as well as a bit of a dystopian edge, you’ll probably want to check out Adam Vass’s work.
Here, There, Be Monsters, by wendi yu.
No matter what they tell you, there’s still weirdness and wonder everywhere. You just have to know where to look. At the edges and cracks of ‘normal’ life we exist, we persist, and we resist: the monsters, the magicians, the anomalies, the freaks, and the outcasts. We gather in the shadows, trying our best to live our lives in a world that, when it doesn’t exactly fear or hate us, doesn't even believe in our existence.
But we’re still here. We’re not going anywhere. And we fight back.
While the layout and art direction of Here, There, Be Monsters is purposeful and cohesive, the goal of this game feels very grunge in the sense that it is meant to acknowledge the messiness and unapologetic anger present in the monster characters. There's a lot of bodies in this art, and these bodies are meant to challenge you - if you find them difficult to look at, that's a you problem, and that feels in tune with the spirit of grunge.
I feel like this game is probably more on the border of punk and grunge, but if what you’re looking for is a game that feels chaotic and embraces the dark and “disgusting” material that grunge is known to celebrate, than this might be worth checking out.
Dead Mall: The Last Great Beast, by Hunter J Allen.
They built us altars only to abandon them. Now they sit as dying, empty relics. No matter what they tell you never forget: These are our relics, not theirs. Don't let them pass gently into that sweet goodnight. They were made for profit but they remain as our playgrounds. If we choose to let them.
This here is a mini-zine and Bingo card about the American shopping mall and its relationship to us, our collective nostalgia, and the significance of cultural ruins.
This is more of a solo bingo game than a roleplaying game, but I think it might be an interesting way to build a modern “dungeon” for something like Liminal Horror. The zine also re-contextualizes a piece of American architecture that was so ingrained into the middle-class experience of the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. I’m intrigued by how you could use this idea of decay and neglect in other urban fantasy and horror games.
MÖRK BORG, by Ockult Örtmästare Games.
MÖRK BORG is a pitch-black apocalyptic fantasy RPG about lost souls and fools seeking redemption, forgiveness or the last remaining riches in a bleak and dying world. Who are you? The tomb-robber with silver glittering between cracked fingernails? The mystic who would bend the world’s heart away from it’s inevitable end? Confront power-draining necromancers, skulking skeletal warriors and backstabbing wickheads. Wander the Valley of the Unfortunate Undead, the catacombs beneath the Bergen Chrypt or the bedevilled Sarkash forest. But leave hope behind - the world’s cruel fate is sealed, and all your vain heroic efforts are destined to end in death and dismay. Or are they?
This is a black comedy style of game that I think has a lot of overlap with the grunge aesthetic. It’s received a number of awards for its art style, which is chaotic, monochromatic, and as best as I can describe it, “sludgy.” Then again, you might look at Mork Borg and feel like it’s more metal than grunge: it’s not casual, but rather designed for shock value. The world is destined to end, and your characters are futilely trying to make a difference in it; a lot of the cues seem to point to your own characters being not necessarily good people.
The Prophet, by The Punk Theologian.
The Prophet is a solo-journaling role-playing game. It requires a tarot deck and can be played in as little as 30 minutes or over days.
Receiving Revelations: Turn over a tarot card and let the prompts and the card image be the revelation from the deity that called you. Navigating through visions of struggle and cries of despair, following the guiding flames of insight, to help turn your people’s trajectory towards justice and equity.
Overcome Events: Flip coins to find out if the people heed your warnings and are aided by their deity in overcoming enemy invasion, surviving a great earthquake, or a raging fire, or are crushed by the weight of divine condemnation reaping upon themselves the consequences of sewing the seeds of inequity.
When it comes to aesthetics, The Prophet feels very DIY-inspired, and when it comes to design, I think the fact that it’s a solo game contributes to the feeling of isolation: your status as a prophet may separate you from your peers, and if your predictions go unnoticed, you could feel even more alone. The inspiration of the creator is defined as “punk,” but since punk is a genre that grunge pulls a lot of inspiration from, I don’t think that this necessarily disqualifies The Prophet from being a “grunge” - style game.
#iHunt, by Machine Age Productions.
#iHunt is a story telling game about killing monsters in the gig economy. In it, you play millennials scraping by paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet. A gig app called #iHunt offers them more money than they've ever made to hit the streets and kill vampires, werewolves, demons, and anything else that goes bump in the night.
The base game of #iHunt centres around the soul-crushing nature of the gig economy, which in and of itself I think is a great focus for a grunge-style game. The supplemental zines created by the designer have a very chaotic and collage-like look, taking photos or public domain art and re-mixing them to create something new. If you want to get really grunge, you might want to check out The 90’s Sucked Ass Or Whatever, which is focused on the specific events and details that would affect your disillusioned monster hunters during the height of grunge.

Writeblr intro!
Okay, so, I've been here for forever, but if I made an intro post, I definitely don't remember it. So.
Info under the cut!
Welcome to my blog. Enjoy your stay!
"Who are you?" Great question!
Hi folks, my name is Cas, and I'm an amateur writer with a love for all things words.
I use He/they/she pronouns,, but neos are fun. I don't have chosen ones, I prefer to let other people use what they think is apt to depict me. :> but to keep it simple, he/they/she! Use whatever pronouns are in your heart for me!
I'm a slave to the whims of my whimsy. If what you're writing makes me feel things, whether they're dark and unsettling or soft and lighter than air, I'm there. A few of my interests are cryptozoology, psychology, horror, fantasy, music and dance, and just anything I can search for. My favorite game is pattern recognition and completion, which makes things like escape rooms and scavenger hunts, whether for treasure or lore (same thing) a huge treat for me. I love being able to search, so if you like hiding obscure lore, let me at it like a pack of hounds.
I write horror, fantasy, mystery, comedy. My current WIP is a slasher comedy with a side of childish whimsy served up on a silver platter with some slice of life and sex jokes for seasoning. Loosely similar energy to Gravity falls is basically everything I make. What can I say, it's what I like.
I'm 18+, work two jobs and have the retensive memory of a soggy goldfish cracker. My schedule is hectic. If you see me reblogging posts, but I've neglected to answer you or respond to something you send, it's not you! I just have the memory of a wet rag.
Most of my work has at least some suggestive elements to it, because sex is a joke to me (/voice of someone who is very, very aroace). But literally every work does if you peek hard enough. Literally just heed my 18+ warnings on this page and you won't run into anything too gross.
I love weird things! Weird things galore! The more fucked up and absurd, the more I cheer! If you think an idea is stupid, send it to me!! I'd love to discuss it with you. Those little one off facts you've come up with for a character? That Au that stemmed from a joke? That cringe thing you're fixated on? Hit me with it! As a man with questionable morals once said, "Reality is an illusion, the universe is a hologram!" And therefore, we should have as much fun as we can!
If you ask me about Couteau, I will literally pledge my life to you. I swear. Or if you comment on any of my writing with him in it. Anything.
My WIPs!
"Well, what stuff are you working on?" LET ME ANSWER THAT!
"Sweeter Than Silence" (Project status: Active; In Progress For: 7+ years)
This, my magnum opus, that I've been fiddling at and fucking with the concept of on and off for approximately 11 years, but have been writing for about 7-
Is my LGBT, slice of life healing and depression infused comedy about a woman who goes home to find that everything she's been looking for in a fulfilling life is already there. "Everything", being a murder mystery in her haunted town that she knows wouldn't hurt a fly without good reason, a ragtag gay friend group, and the local hot bartender who is so outlandish it's like he's not even human. (spoiler alert! There might be a reason for that-)
Goofing aside, this story is stuffed to the brim with just the most absurd concepts I could think of. A media about embracing the purest form of self, and learning to love that part of you that finds beauty in the weirdest corners of the world, even if it was killed very young, to embrace your curiosity, and to indulge in suspension of belief. A low stakes, supernatural slasher comedy between a girl who's been told her whole life she's too much and a man who only wants her to get freakier.
This story is: - One of three parts! - T4T! Both main characters are trans, and they have a romance. - Stupid. /pos - Full of the stuff that would make a 13 year old go wild - A Composed Character Breaking Down And Losing It (TM) - Morally grey murder - A bunch of other stuff
"Rose Colored Glasses" (Project status: In Stasis, no longer currently active)
A fanfic i started y e e e a r s ago, when the Hazbin fandom was starved for content. A multi-chapter reader perspective fic, where, after falling into hell, they help an overcompensating Overlord Valentino cease his abusive ways. It's a fix it fic. It's me fixing him. Mostly just an excuse for me to dissect and make a dissertation on Valentino's possibly horrifically fractured and bruised psyche. I like the version of him I made up in my head, but I also like him canon, because he's horrific but he's also just. Iconic. Let's be real. Motivation for this passed on when Hazbin itself shattered my theories, but I still keep it around for fun.
The fanfic:
I also have personal notes that I won't be linking, but if you wanna know more about my theories, please ask! Even non canon, I love talking about my AU Valentino.
"You're Free" (Project status: Finished! Just for fun)
A fanfic I busted out in like an hour and a half once for a video game that gripped me by the neck. (Cryptid Coffeehouse, I love you.)
Not much to explain on this one, it was a self indulgent little scribble I did once, although if you haven't played CC, I highly recommend it.
The fanfic:
Books two and three of BISTS (the overarching series that Sweeter Than SIlence starts!) I know what happens in them, I just have to write it out. Wish me luck
Miscellaneous smut fics that I've done as spin offs of my own series just for fun and to explore different power dynamics. If I ever post any of them, they'll go on a pseud specifically for schrodingers fics (both canon and not, it depends on how I feel) under forgotten_scripture (AO3 account)
Miscellaneous Info!
My blog is sorted into tags!
castalk - Me saying words! bists/blood is sweeter than silence - All of my WIP info on Sweeter Than Silence and it's series. couteau my beloved go back into your box - The tag I specificslly use for anything and everything about my antagonist/first book series love interest. I highly recommend checking out this tag if for no other reason so that you have to look at him. coudoodles - Art I've done of. my antagonist. castalk - Me saying words! bists/blood is sweeter than silence - All of my WIP info on Sweeter Than Silence and it's series. couteau my beloved go back into your box - The tag I specificslly use for anything and everything about my antagonist/first book series love interest. Use these to navigate your way around here! I'll add more as needed.
I have a huge fixation on the antagonist of Sweeter Than SIlence. I mentioned him earlier, but, his name is Couteau, he's my stupid 6'4 redhead who wears 2 inch heels to make himself taller, he's a moron, he's immortal, and he's my beloved baby. I lose my shit over this man on a daily basis. Genuinely, bring him up to me and I will talk for hours. I do not regret it. I'm haunted by visions.
I love awful memes. 200% permission if we've never interacted to just send me a bad meme. I want one
And or, I spend a lot of time stuck in spots where I need music recommendations. Throw a song at me!
My inbox is always open. My DMs are always open. I love talking. Do not fear me. Come tell me about your favorite things.
Hey long haired redheaded trans men!
Having a shitty day?
Feeling dysphoric?
Need a mood boost?
Send your selfies to my inbox and watch me go absolutely incoherent about the fact that you look like my OC! For the small price of one existence, I will hype you up to unspeakable levels because you deserve it!! Watch a stranger on the internet rave about how unspeakably fantastic you are!
(mostly kidding about this, but if it would make you feel better, go right ahead, I'm always happy when my obsessions spread love /gen)
Aaaaaand, on that note-
I think that's it!
If you read all of this, wow, look at you!! You did fantastic!!! I can't wait to ask you about your projects, and am waiting with bated breath for you to ask me about mine. HAHAHA
Anyways! Welcome to my blog!
Enjoy your stay!

Anon with the headcanons request from a minute ago. More specifically what are your dark nsfw headcanons? Any uncommon opinions on EJ? What that eldritch horror peen do.... 😇
..... i am clinically obsessed he has been my comfort character for a decade 🤭
EJ IS MY FAVORITE EEK
I hope these will be as good as you're hoping!! enjoy anon!
GN mentioned with some references to AFAB/AMAB but they're just hcs so it doesn't really change anything!
NSFW under the cut!!
This isn't necessarily dark, but I feel like EJ would have a HUUUUGE breeding kink. He yearns to see his cum drip from any of your holes, and he'd repeatedly fill you just to watch it all seep out. Pump you full and plug you up, take you out in public somewhere to watch you get embarrassed.
We all know he's got sharp as shit teeth. And he would ABSOLUTELY use them on you. Anywhere you have open skin is free real estate to him, making quick work to bloody up and mark the most tender skin on your body.
To follow up, during sex, he absolutely uses his teeth to latch onto you when he's cumming. He doesn't mind the position, but usually picks one where he can see your face and hear you. Although, he isn't opposed to shoving your face into the pillows while you scream.
BONDAGE. He loves seeing you tied up and helpless, squirming under him like some little worm!!! Bonus points if the restraints leave marks on you, he'd absolutely adore that afterwards.
If you're AFAB, he'd 100 fucking percent DEVOUR you on your period. He'd almost beg to do so, twirling his tongues up into you to taste all your delicious goodness just for him.
If you're AMAB, he'd bite all over your inner thighs, tearing up the skin until it bleeds and he gets to lap up the resulting blood while he's sucking you off.
Because he's half demon, his dick is above average. Me and my friend occasionally dabble with the idea he has a tentacle for a dick, cause like, c'mon. Look at him. Human or tentacle dick, he knows how to use it. Could absolutely split you apart.
He takes pride in watching you choke on his cock, staring at you with such hunger in his eyes and grinning as you're gagging, choking and struggling to breathe. He only pulls your head back when he feels you can't take it anymore.
Tying in with that choking thing, he will wrap his hands around your throat while he's ruthlessly fucking into you and will strangle you until you're on the verge of passing out, and then he'll let go.
I've seen a lot of people headcanon that he goes into heat and I really enjoy that trope. I can imagine him locking himself in his room trying to avoid you but of course you come in and look so good he just can't possibly help but fuck you into his mattress until you're crying out of pleasure.
EJ is the type to try anything once before he says no, wanting to make sure you always feel good. If you tell him about a weird kink or fetish you have I'm sure he'd happily indulge you in that! He's not picky when it comes to you.
He definitely jerks off with your underwear, sniffing them as well. He'd cum in them if you're away, and lay them on your bed as a gift to tell you he was thinking about you.
I like to think that he's a bit of a stalker. ESPECIALLY if you show interest in him. He'd follow you around, stalk social medias if he has access, ask around about you, and find his way into your personal life. Definitely has a journal in his nightstand of information about you, maybe even a few cute polaroids of you sleeping.
He can be somewhat shy or absolutely overbearing depending if he's in heat or not. If he's in heat, he'll practically drag you to his room to carry out his disgusting fantasies. If he isn't, he'll approach it differently, touching you and sending subtle signs until you get it.
This absolutely does NOT carry over to sex. Once he has you under him he's feral. He lets his desires take over, and he will not stop for anything, unless you make it clear you are uncomfortable.
This being said, he's pretty good with aftercare! At first he doesn't really understand the concept but he begins to understand once he's messed with you more. He'll clean you up, snuggle with you afterwards and occasionally bring you something to drink or eat. Typically he tries to stay awake with you until you fall asleep first.
As for uncommon opinions, I feel as if he is more of a recluse. He stays in his room majority of the time unless he has to go on a mission. He leaves his room to talk to you and a few housemates. This doesn't mean he doesn't get along with the housemates, he gets along fairly well with everyone.
That's all I have for now! Thank you anon for the request! This was the request that really caught my eye first and I have a few others I'm working on!! Tips about writing and formatting are appreciated! Love y'all!!

Yandere Garrett Denali (Breaking Dawn) x Reader
Chapter 1: Meeting the Yandere Male Lead
You sighed, rolling around your bed as you just finished reading another yandere fanfic. It must be nice to have someone obsess over you to the point of being taken against your will to be "protected".
But then and again, that's also fucked up.
" Not like I'll experience those things in real life. Yanderes in reality are actually really scary, I think" You mumbled to yourself. That's another weird thing about you. You liked talking to yourself and creating weird fantasies in your head. People on social media call it Maladaptive daydreaming but who cares, right?
As long as you keep yourself entertained.
Glancing at your window, you noted that it was dark already. Glancing at your phone, it read 7PM. Meh, maybe you can ask permission from your parents to allow you to walk around the park at this time.
Yes, you're already 26 years old but growing up in an Asian household and just moving here in America for a short vacation means you still need to ask your parents before going outside. They were very strict and overprotective of you after all you were the youngest and a woman at that.
"Hey mom, can I go outside for a while? My room feels stuffy and I think I need a walk."
"Honey, its already dark and-"
"Mom, its just 7PM and I'll just be in the park near our house. I won't be long, just maybe 30 minutes. You can't keep treating me like a child forever." You cut her off and ranted.
She sighed and look at you wearily.
"Fine but bring your pepper spray and taser, okay? You know there's a high crime rate in this country. And call me if someone's bothering you. Remember, don't talk to any strangers!"
Luckily your father was meeting with some old friend since he probably won't allow you if you asked him instead.
"Yes mom, I know. I love you." You kissed her cheek as you happily went out.
Breathing in the night air, you carefully watched for anyone following you. Living with overprotective parents made you a little paranoid yourself and you hated it.
Seeing no one around as you finally approached the park, you sit in the swing. There were streetlights every corner so it helped ease your nerves a bit.
"Okay, calm down self and just enjoy the view" You talked to yourself as you gaze at the stars. Rocking yourself back and forth on the swing, your mind immediately comes up with different scenarios for your favorite character.
Giggling to yourself as you were swept up in your imagination, you suddenly stop when you felt the hairs on the back of your neck suddenly stood up. Something's wrong.
Glancing warily at your surrounding, you caught red eyes peering at you from a distance.
"Shit!" You cursed and immediately bolted out from your place.
You hated running when you feel scared since it felt as if you'll be chased the moment you do but this time, all your senses were telling you to run which you did.
'Don't look back, don't look back' Your mind chanted when you suddenly feel someone breathing down the back of your neck.
"Shit, fuck!" You shrieked, increasing your speed. Now, you wished you've exercised more as you were lacking in stamina and speed to probably outrun this crazy motherfucker.
Finally reaching your house, you bolted through the gates and quickly locked it before knocking furiously on your door.
"Mom, let me in!" You cried and dared to finally look behind you with your pepper spray ready. Much to your relief and horror, no one was there.
What the fuck?
The air was still and nothing extraordinary moves. Your eyes swept your street and you found nothing at all.
Okay, that's seriously creepy.
"Oh dear, what happened?" Your mom looked at you worriedly and you hurriedly entered your house and locked the door.
After giving a thorough explanation of what just occured, you both made sure the doors were locked and all windows were closed.
"I know, I won't go out again" You said in defeat as your mother gave you a knowing look.
After taking a bath, you went to your bed to read some fanfic so you can forget what happened when you see something move quickly outside your window.
Weird, you thought, gathering your courage and taking a quick peek behind your curtain. There's no one outside.
"Okay, okay fine, maybe its time to go to bed" You sighed, getting under the covers. Unlike the usual, it didn't take long before you drifted to sleep.
Garrett's POV:
I just finished feeding on another unsuspecting prey. Human blood sure taste delicious especially when they struggle.
It was still early so I head around the park to enjoy the night breeze when I saw a young girl sitting on the swings alone. Her face looks blank as she stare at nothing in particular. There was certain serenity around her that piqued my interest. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to observe her for longer than I would have like when it seems as if she sensed me.
Our eyes made contact for a moment and it seems as if time literally move slower than normal.
'Mine' The first thought that came to my mind. I glance down and saw a red string tied to my pinky connecting to hers before it turns invisible. After centuries of living, I finally found my soulmate.
Unfortunately, my excitement didn't match hers as I probably comes off as something creepy. Her innocent eyes widen in fear before she take off.
Of course, her speed is nothing compared to mine and as I chased after her, I relish the sound of her heart pumping vigorously. I can easily reach out to catch her but enjoying this moment, I teasingly breath down her neck and had to hide my chuckle when she cursed and ran even faster.
So cute!
I had to stop myself from embracing her and taking her right then and there as I realized I scared her too much tonight. Hiding behind a concrete wall, I watched her quickly enter her property and knock at the door, her eyes finally trying to search for her 'stalker'.
Seeing her distressed face made me suddenly feel guilty. I shouldn't have teased her so much. After thinking of ways on how to make up to her and have a proper introduction, I saw the lights on her room turn off and her bedside lamp open.
Jumping on the ledge of her window, I try to peek between her curtains to see her one last time before she sleep but I think she sensed me again when she suddenly draw her curtain to gaze outside.
'Too close' If I still have a heart, it would have been beating hard as I barely hid myself the last moment. She can't see me. At least not yet.
'Soon' I promised, closing my eyes as her scent wafts over my senses.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Your POV:
The weather today was gloomy. Dark clouds hang above with the promise of rain and the occasional breeze was chilling you to the bone.
Your favorite kind of weather.
"Ah, this is really nice" You mumble to yourself. It was still late afternoon so you got permission to go to the nearest grocery store to buy ingredients for dinner.
'Ohh chocolates!' You excitedly pick out a bar of Twix when a hand reach out the same time you did, accidentally enclosing it around yours. The hand was a lot bigger and you tilt your head back to see a really tall stranger in black clothes looking down at you with surprise etch on his face.
'Woah so tall and handsome!' You inwardly squealed.
"Oh sorry!" You smiled at him nervously and motion him to go pick up his chocolate first.
"Ah, no it was my bad. Go ahead." He smiled at you.
Okay, what in the freaking romance movie shit is happening? That's weird cause you swear you were the only one in the aisle that time so since when did he appear?
"Oh no, no, its really okay. Anyway, I still have to pick up something so yeah, goodbye and thanks!" You awkwardly bowed at him and left the scene in a hurry.
'Ah shit, that was awkward' Sighing to yourself, you decided to pick out the ingredients first and then return later when the stranger is gone.
Finally getting out of the store, you carried your things ready to go home when a voice broke your thoughts.
"Hey, fancy seeing you again here" The stranger from before walked up to you casually. In his hands were a bag from what he had bought in the store.
He wore a jeans and shirt topped with black jacket and a necklace was hanging on his neck. Truthfully, he's gorgeous but something seems off about him.
"Yeah, hi"
"You got the chocolates, darling?"
Okay, he's suspicious. Why the heck is he talking to you and calling you darling? Is this what they call creeps here in America? Too bad if he's one as he's actually handsome.
"Yeah" You shortly answered and proceeded to ignore him as you start walking. He followed you, walking alongside as he strike up a conversation.
"Uhm sorry but do you need something? I don't know who you are but what you're doing is making me uncomfortable" You wanted to use the 'Leave me alone or I'm going to call the cops line' but you refrain from doing so and instead waited for his response.
"I'm sorry darling, my name is Garrett. Charmed to meet you." He proceeded to take your hand and plant a kiss on the back of it while gazing at you seductively.
If you knew how to blush, you would have been bright red by now but since you do not, your comical expression seemed to amuse him instead.
You never thought in all your life, you'd experience a guy kissing your hand like in those historical films. The slight stubbles on his face tickled your skin and you hurriedly take your hand away, the sensation of his soft lips on your hand imprinted on your mind.
"What the fuck?" You unconciously said out loud. "That's-"
"Romantic?" His teasing smile returned and you gave him a horrendous look.
"No, its creepy! What the heck dude?!"
"I can hear your heart beating faster than normal" He supplied.
"Yes cause what you did is just, I dunno scary? Leave me alone, bro" You said and proceeded to hightail it out of there.
"No wait, I haven't got your name yet" He touch your shoulder and it felt like an electricity zapped you. He retracted his hand, looking at it weirdly. Ah so he felt it too. Must be static electricity or something.
"I don't know who you are and no, I'm not giving away my name to any stranger. Now please leave me alone or I will have to call the cops" You finally said, giving him a stern look.
Garrett looked down at his mate, threatening him. Her small stature made her look so vulnerable instead. An adorable mouse trying to play tough before a lion, he chuckled at the thought. Finally unable to resist himself, he leaned down, embracing your form as he sniffed your neck in hunger. You smell so divine, so heavenly. He wanted to claim you as soon as possible.
Your squeak in response only made him crave you more. You have absolutely no idea what you're doing to him.
Placing a kiss on your neck, his lips linger as he feel your pulse rate increasing, the flow of blood rushing in your veins and your heart thumping erratically inside your chest.
He pull back and grab both your cheeks to look at you. You pupils were blown wide as you gaze at him in fear.
"You don't understand it yet but you will soon enough. You're mine."
Daintily placing a kiss on your forehead, he gaze at you one last time before turning to walk away from you.
You reach your house in silent contemplation. Still shocked at the turn of events, you numbly greeted your mom who worriedly voiced her concern to your unusual self. Debating on whether to tell her or not, you decided to tell her another time as your mind were still reeling from what happened.
After changing your clothes, you lied in your bed and stare out your open window. Down the street, you saw him staring at you and you shriek in response. The next thing you know he wasn't there at all.
'What the heck, am I hallucinating?' you grimly thought, rubbing your chest to calm yourself down.
"Goodness, that guy sure acts like a real life yandere. I mean I like them in fanfics but geez, I don't need a yandere in real life" You talked to yourself as you closed you windows and curtains seeing as it was soon to be night.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
You carelessly flung your sheets as you prepare for bed. You had just finished showering and doing your bed time routine but still feel annoyed with your parents lecturing you again about your diet.
"Well maybe I want to die early by consuming sweet foods, the heck they care about it" You grumbled to yourself while closing your lamp. You always feel like enclosing yourself in darkness when you let your irritation washed over you.
It has been sometime probably when your window suddenly slam open.
Sitting up quickly, you watched as two red eyes peer at you before a tall, well build man entered through your window with ease.
You grab the nearest object which is your pillow- fucking useless- to try and defend yourself.
"Who are you?"
"Its me, sweetheart" A soft, velvet-like voice answered.
"Wait, is it you Garrett?" You squinted in the dark before he suddenly lunged at you, pining you to the bed. He nuzzled your neck, inhaling your scent as he sighed blissfully.
Your body stiffened before pushing him off you and rushing to escape from your window.
Looking back as you run away from your house, you find him suddenly behind you, arms wrap around your waist as he run to who knows where. Wind slapped against your face as you felt dizzy and nauseous.
What's with his super speed? Is he a vampire or something?
Before you knew it, you find yourself in a forest. Thick, overhanging trees that sways with the wind coupled with the sliver of the moon slipping in between the spaces made the woods appear daunting and mysterious in your eyes. Its actually breath taking and the kind of scenery that you love but not in this situation.
"I told you before you're mine. I came back to get you" His eyes looked sincere as he softly cup your cheek with one hand.
"Uhmm, you know this is real life right? We're not in some kind of romance book shit bro. Or wait, are you taking any medications right now?"
Working as a nurse back in your home country, you've also studied about different kinds of mental disorders and you worried this guy probably have some serious issues.
Garrett scoffed and looked at you in disbelief before laughing it off.
"Come now, YN, don't be like that to your soulmate. I'm hurt."
Seeing as you don't look convinced, he sighed and stare at you seriously.
"Fine. I'll do this just once because you're special to me. I'll give you a head start for 1 minute. If you reach that specific tree-" He pointed at the pine tree with white marking on its trunk a few distance away from you.
"-if you reach that before I do then I promise I'll let you go but if I catch you first, then you're staying with me."
"Uhm for how long?"
"For eternity, sweetheart" He said, grinning mysteriously.
'Okay fuck that, I'm yeeting it out of here'
Before he can start counting to three, you immediately bolted leaving Garrett staring flabbergasted at his mate who run away without notice. Shaking his head in amusement, he gave her exactly 1 minute before starting the chase.
Running past the leaves and the branches of the trees surrounding you felt like a deja vu. This scene...it happened to you before. Then it hit your self. You had this dream years ago where you were running in a forest and someone was chasing after you. You remember reaching that tree but someone-
"Hey there sweetheart, maybe you should run faster"
Garrett's taunting voice filled your ears and the adrenaline pumping through your veins increased your stamina and speed. If you could just reach that damn tree, its so close!
Extending your hand to touch your goal, your fingertips almost brushed the rough edges of the branch when you felt his hand rest on your shoulder and his cold presence behind you.
Cold shivers ran down your spine as you felt sweat dotted your forehead. Panting heavily, you feel your heart racing in both fear and anxiety.
"You lose, love" He whispered in your ear and you can't help the gasp that came out your lips. Turning slowly, you lifted your gaze to see him with a dark, contented smile on his face.
His pale face and red eyes filled with satisfaction made you asked the question itching on your mind since the first time you met him.
"What are you?"
"I'm a vampire, darling. And I've come for you as I promised."

My media this week (21-27 Jan 2024)
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Cat Person (The_She_Devil) - 72K, shrunkyclunks - Bucky's the SHIELD agt tasked with bringing newly defrosted Steve up to speed on the 21st century - there's really hot sex in a secluded cabin PLUS feelings. All around deliciousness.
😊 Dark Carnivals: Modern Horrors and the Origins of American Empire (W. Scott Poole, author; Enrique McGavin, narrator) - interesting, edifying, depressing. Not as much discusssion of the films as I expected/would have liked - like 70% rundown of USian imperial activities of the last two centuries, 30% horror/scifi film discussion. [In hindsight, should have read this in text, as there were passages I really wanted to highlight/quote and the narration was…weird. Voice sound & tone was OK but there were lots of bizarre pauses. Sometimes when reading a quotes from a notable figure, the narrator did do some very credible imitations of Clinton & Reagan.]
😍 Waking Up Slow (odetteandodile) - 44K, shrunkyclunks - single dad Bucky, living in a isolated lighthouse in Canada, finds an amesiac, just-thawed Steve Rogers washed up on his beach… (reread for stucky bookclub, forever fave!)
😊 for a good time, call… (EvanesDust) - 46K, sterek, omegaverse fake-dating - solidly enjoyable
😊 Maurice (E.M. Forester, author; Peter Firth, narrator) - read this for a discord book club, can't believe I hadn't read it before & it's been 30 years since I watched the movie. Forester's language & turn of phrase is amazing.
🥰 And My Love Life Waits for Me (Bittersweet_in_Boston (author); Alaskan_Outsider (artist)) - 62K, shrunkyclunks soulmate fic - satisfyingly enjoyable, not nearly as dark as the tags might make you think
💖💖 +190K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Own Me series (nrnyx) - TW: Jordan/Derek /Stiles, 62K (series) - Stiles gets picked up by husbands Jordan & Derek at the club and what starts as a very hot one night stand becomes so much more. Very werewolfy omegaverse stuff. Hot quality smut but also action-y plot!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Goncharov (berlincorpography) - Goncharov (1973): OFC / OFC, 6K - very clever & funny fic featuring disaster lesbians, film criticism & academia
Once Upon a Time (softestpunk) - The Sandman: Dreamling, 14K - just so soft & warm, pure delight! They're both single dads! Falling in love! Dream is a children's librarian!

Hii! Previous shipping discourse anon here after doing some Thinking(tm). I think the problem that people see in proshippers is not that it *is* dark or deals with sensitive topics, but that's its weirdly...fetish-y? Like, there's a specific breed of anti that I don't like that's that's kaeluc antis(basically, sworn bros v adopted bros)(because their entire argument is a bit sinophobic) but there are ppl who will go out of their way to make them adopted bros anyway so. You can Tell it's a fetish
Oh man I vaguely remember when we were talking about kaeluc on here. Still know Nothing about it but I remember it (for some reason) came up.
…or I read about it on another blog?
Whatever. More to the point.
I’m a strong defender of “it’s cool to like dark fiction just because you enjoy it.” I don’t think anyone needs a justification. We don’t demand people explain why they like watching action movies with blood and death, do we?
But also I know exactly what you mean. Like. Eurgh. I am way too tired to explain my very complex thoughts about human sexuality. But for one thing, adopted siblings falling in love is like. A really old trope. Do I like it? No. Is it a thing? For some reason! (S/o to Cassandra Claire for letting me accidentally read her weird incest fantasy books.) But okay, I think I can say…
There are people who write things purely for porn purposes. I try not to judge those too much, with a few exceptions, mostly what I referenced earlier.
Then there are people exploring themes etc. Which is like. That’s what I do. Actually it’s funny that you used that example because one of my fic ideas includes the line “Why do I want to call you my brother when we’re having sex?” (It’s a joke in context, but explaining that context is beyond the point.) So like yeah they are generally speaking fine in my book.
And then there’s the middle ground where things get murky. It’s clearly not someone just writing something for the purposes of getting off, but it’s also not a sincere exploration. It’s…yeah, it’s something else.
I’m too tired to really wrap this up. Lemme try anyway.
I think a lot of people…okay, this goes back in part to media literacy, but there’s also some current cultural factors here, but a lot of people struggle to separate their intrinsic disgust from actual risk. It’s like — there was a spider living in my bathroom for a while. It kind of terrified me at first but the spider is just chilling. The spider is not an actual harm to me.
And as an author, sometimes I just want to make people feel revulsed and disgusted. God knows I’m familiar enough with the feeling.
Okay I am literally falling asleep as I type. Hopefully this makes sense? I am so exhausted, it’s been a Rough Ass Week in ya boy.
Maybe like. In reference to my previous comment on Lolita, I want people to understand the disgust they feel in response is part of the stories. Stories are meant to be felt. Sometimes horror is part of the feeling.
Oh my god I cannot keep my eyes open why did I think this was a good idea.
I really don’t have a label in the discourse. I don’t care what I am labeled as, so as long as it doesn’t involve misinformation.
K that’s all for tonight but I’ll check my inbox for you in the morning nonnie
#mine#ask#anon#shipcourse#sorry if this is incoherent I’m that tired#these shipcourse discussions are my favorites#the ones that don’t waste time on legs#fuck#can’t do it too tired#love you night

Hi! I’m trying to befriend my favourite mutuals so I’m asking a bunch of questions to get to know you all better
What was/is your favourite subject in school? Were/are you good at it?
What country do you live in? What do you like/dislike about it?
Are you currently writing/planning an original story? If so, what is it about?
What genres of media do you usually consume? What books would you recommend to people?
What is your favourite poison?
what is your favourite method of murder (both to read about and what you would actually use)?
What patterns do you usually notice in the people that you hang out with?
Can I message you?
Hi, darling!! Love these questions, thank you so much for sending them through 🥺 Honoured to be considered a favourite mutual.
My favourite subject was absolutely English. It was my top subject when I graduated as well, and I was definitely good at it. I wasn't always though. I actually had trouble reading as a kid. I didn't even really like reading until I got to around 10 years old. And I had a few rough years in high school where no matter how hard I tried in English classes, I could have sworn two teachers in particular were out to give me a hard time for a couple years (to the point where I was nearly averaging on a D in their classes, whereas all other years I was a straight A student in English, including my final years, so the contrast is still weird to look back on, considering nothing substantial actually changed in my learning between those years).
Australia! I like the environment here, generally, not just in terms of vibes from folk but also nature. I do like that where I am in particular they seem to try and incorporate more greenery into built up areas. I dislike our education system deeply and the fact that geographically we're split off from much of the world.
Yes, I am! Both writing and planning (have done so much planning over the years, vaguely, went to write, and realised I needed an outline, and I'm still finishing that up so I can continue the writing part). It's about the sacrifices we make to protect what we care about, essentially. It's also what I would consider high fantasy (though it's technically a blend between high/historical fantasy and low fantasy). Also, horror and romance elements because it's not my work without a bit of horror and some romance at this point (sue me, this stuff goes hand in hand so well sometimes).
Genres of media: dark fantasy (so not outright horror but also too dark to be purely what you might just call fantasy), historical drama, aaand romance (but it's usually mixed in with something else because I struggle to read straight up romance). Books I recommend people are usually tailored to what I know of their interests. Will usually try to squeeze in something by V.E. Schwab though.
Ooh. Good question. Assuming you're talking about actual poison and not just a drink (drink: mocha) it would have to be mistletoe. It's not suuuper effective in small doses, I know, but hear me out: it's a hemiparasitic plant and there's been debates over whether it can be considered a carnivorous plant because of how it feeds off a host plant (tree). I can't remember whether it was argued that it could have been a passive or active trap, though I guess it doesn't really matter, because in the end it's really not carnivorous at all. Still! Toxic to consume. Vomiting and so on. Possible death etc.
Hmm, favourite method. I love poisonings, actually, because they're interesting to orchestrate in stories and can make for dramatic symptom reveals and realisations (and I've written them before too, but reading is just as fun). And, to be honest, I'm pretty shitty at writing other sorts of death scenes BUT oh you know what goes hard?? A good old fashioned stabbing where Character A leans into it and Character B to whisper one last thing -- usually something that holds a lot of weight. THAT is brilliant. I have one of those planned to write. Really excited for it.
People I hang out with are massive nerds. Okay, more seriously... I don't know. I hang out with a variety of people, because I also have a wide array of interests and so I tend to meld into different groups at a time. That's why I say nerds. I like to be around people who care a lot about Very Specific Things. Oh, well, they're also often neurodivergent, so there's that. I find it difficult to get along with people who are so chill about everything and give off the vibe that they have no personality and or passion.
Absolutely you can message me!!

Considering your recent musings on worldbuilding, fantasy, and magic realism, would be interested to hear your thoughts on superhero worlds, where practically all those subgenres crossover (soft science fiction for the technology, dark fantasy/horror for the magic, high fantasy pantheons loosely based on mythology and entirely made-up and genre-busting ones, space opera for the occasional interstellar travel, etc.) and yet from some point on it gets merged into the background of an universe supposed to be just like our world until noted otherwise (particularly in social trends, etc.), in true magic-realist fashion.
i gotta say, superheroes are just... basically uninteresting as a concept to me. whether you're deconstructing or reconstructing or playing it straight, you have to torture basic narrative plausibility (irrespective of SF/fantasy/realist plausability) to make the genre function that i simply tend to lose interest.
also, i don't think "a universe supposed to be just like our world until noted otherwise" is a very good definition of magical realism. magical realism is, IMO, about emotional logic overwhelming other systems governing the narrative at specifically heightened points, in a way that should break those systems (but apparently does not). but not everywhere in the narrative (that's more like surrealism), and typically not in ways that are marked as unusual within the narrative (characters don't go "wow, that was weird/amazing/terrifying!"). your definition seems to me to be a better definition of "low" or "urban" fantasy, or certain kinds of near-future science fiction, than magical realism.
because in superhero fiction, the weird/amazing/terrifying nature of the fantastical elements are part of the point. superman is a hero because he is remarkable and, well, superhuman. it would only be magical realism if clark kent was an ordinary guy who one day caught a building that was collapsing and saved lois lane because of his overpowering love for her, and his sense of personal alienation from the rest of the human race, and everyone acted like this was pretty normal and it was never brought up again. as soon as you make him an alien, as a causative factor in his supernatural abilities, you just have regular science fiction.
i do think it's kind of fun that the superhero genre is one of those genres that borrows freely from others--narratives where tropes from horror, fantasy, and science fiction can coexist comfortably are neat. i have friends who are english major types, you know, real insufferable book nerds, who speak of the superhero genre not unlike you do: they evoke the image of a febrile amalgam of different artists in the same shared universe, where the contradictions and paradoxes only add to a kind of semi-surreal character; and of more independent auteur-style projects like Watchmen and Worm which comment cleverly on established tropes of the genre.
but whenever i dip my toe into superhero fiction of any flavor, i feel less that i'm sampling from a roiling cauldron of imagination too rich to be contained by any single narrative approach and more that I am tasting a bland wafer of something whose foundational characters and stories were almost instantly converted into an undifferentiated paste by particular commercial and cultural demands; and rather than injecting new and exciting material into that paste, most innovations in the genre have taken that paste and tried to sculpt it, like making little sculptures out of spam and calling it cuisine.
this is not to say i have never enjoyed a superhero movie; just that even the works praised as daring innovators within the genre seem to me to be basically more of the same. like licensed star wars media or video game tie-in novels, it's incredibly difficult to transcend the limitations of your genre when the thing that crystallized the genre in the first place, the thing that has your audience present in the first place, are those limitations. i don't think it's possible to make a superhero story very interesting for the same reason it's not possible to build the burj khalifa out of spam: spam is not steel, and in order to make spam have the properties of steel, it would have to cease to be useful as spam.

Hey could I get a match up with Male characters from Stardew?
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: BI
Zodiac: Capricorn
MBTI: INTJ
Appearance: I am 160 cm. I wear thin glasses. I am a bit chubby and have a lot of scars from working with animals or cooking. I always end up walking on my toes. I have short dark brown almost black hair and blue eyes.
Personality: People’s first impression is that I am either very mysterious or very sophisticated. With my natural paranoia of people, it takes a long time for me to get comfortable with someone. I usually have a dark sense of humor or completely dry and sarcastic despite most people not picking up. I often end up being a comfort to a lot of people, being a shoulder to lean on; many people say that I am the type of person they can talk to and just open up to me. I always am the type to be bold and be super blunt, I say things how I want and when I want. I often go ahead and stay stuff that most people are afraid to say because I know nobody else will if I don’t say anything. I am what people have described as chaotically good, I work towards a general good but I am not always a nice person.
Hobbies: I love writing, so much so I am an author. I love creative writing though specifically because I create worlds. Cooking and baking is what I usually do in my free time, trying to give people my cooking is the best thing. I love playing video games, especially RPGs and a lot of complicated stuff. I enjoy playing D&D campaigns, especially other table top rpgs. I sometimes do art but not all of the time. I love reading, especially good horror books.
Likes: I like weird and experimental stuff and music and anything in general. I absolutely love horror, though I am a lot more into complicated horror than anything else. I love fantasy and Sci-fi, both genres are just absolutely a delight to have. I love complex stories and characters, something that I could talk on and on about for hours. I love animals, because I used to grow up on a farm with chickens, turkeys, and horses, but even just cats and dogs I love and take care for. Speaking of that, nature, I absolutely love nature, I love camping, hiking, enjoying to the sights, to the point where I camped in negative degree weather (whoops). People who are willing to go along with this.
Dislikes: People who think they are better than shitty entertainment and or are critical to anything that isn’t top tier. As much as I love good media, I always held the belief that the worst thing a piece of media can be is boring. So someone judging another person for liking bad things that are still entertaining have no sense of fun in my opinion. Like you aren’t better for not liking romcoms, you are just a dick. People who like playing games with communication or something is just a one way ticket for getting me mad. People who can’t understand why people don’t change overnight, or that people can’t just simply fix another person’s problems, they can help sure but not fix. Bad textured foods make me vomit.
Love languages: I love giving acts of service and quality time. Most of the stuff I do is provide a listening ear no matter what, which leads to people becoming comfortable in my presence. I often love cooking with people to make stuff with each other. I love receiving words of affirmation and quality time, because both just absolutely melt my heart.
🐱👍
== Stardew Valley ==>
I match you up with…
Harvey
Harvey is possibly the most down-to-earth guy you could ask for, and he’d be an easy friend and lover for you.
At first he’s intrigued if not intimidated by you and your less open demeanor, but after a few trips to his office after being in the mines or a shopping trip for some medicine, he starts to see little bits of your personality he likes: your humor, your moral values, and, most importantly, your kindness.
After a few dangerous encounters, he always makes sure you have the right tools to go into the mines, and frequently spends his time patching you up in the office chattering away.
Harvey’s an anxious man, so just knowing that you’d be willing to listen to him when he needs it warms his heart immensely.
In a relationship, he’s flooding you with quality time. Whether it’s making breakfast side by side, watering the crops on a hot summer’s day, or just reading together as the rain pours, he’ll always be there when you need him.
He’s enamoured with anything you write, but won’t hide any criticisms from you either. He loves your work, and wants everyone to see it, and so tries to make it the best it can be. Regardless, you often spend time reading your works out loud to him as he gazes at you lovingly.
He’s also madly in love with the fact that you don’t compromise on your beliefs. You’re strong willed in a way he’s not, and he values that you two are very much two sides of the same coin.

hi! different anon from earlier, lol :D
reading ur carrd and u specifically specified that u write non-romanticized yandere, and i am curious how the trope can be non-romanticized? /gen
as far as i know, the base yandere trope has always been pretty wack, and idrk if base yandere could be considered "romanticized" when its been like that since the start
Oh ! No worries, I'm glad to explain my reasoning :3
It's been a bit since I've consumed any original media featuring yand, but from what I've noticed in fanworks is that lots of people seem to think of yandere as a romance trope, if you get me? Sort of putting them in the same basket as "oh, he's a little jealous, but he's a nice guy!" or "oh, she's just passionate, how romantic that she killed her rivals!" which is, hm, dependant on how the love interest reacts, I guess. I think in a dark fantasy where they're both ruthless, it could work as a fucked up romance.
But when I write yandere, I use it as a psychological horror trope. It's scary to me, attractive in the usual weird "scary-hot" contrast fiction can awaken, but scary takes the cake, I think. Stalking, murder, being in danger, your friends/family being in danger, the fact that it's all dependant on the whims of someone you barely know (and then add according to the yandere type - a delusional might hurt you even if you play along perfectly because they'd delude themselves into thinking whatever they want to think, a sadist might hurt you just because they find it fun, a worshippy's horror is more subtle and based on the uncanny and uncomfortable with the whole pedestalling, but it's still there, and so on).
It's just me setting a sort of line. "I write a trope that is commonly shown as romantic, but don't expect that from me, because I see it as a horror trope and write it as such". Though, who knows, I only really read other horror-yand works, but I haven't branched out in ages, the situation might have changed since I was a middle schooler :3 But essentially i de-romanticise it just using a style i'd use to write horror rather than romance so the atmosphere fits what i want to show !
#i hope this all makes sense ! i think i've already stepped away from the origins of the trope#so i kind of just set a line with that to explain what sort of yand i write#asks

The Monster and the Butterfly🥀🦋
Crimson Peak - and Guillermo del Toro's whole filmography, tbh, but Crimson Peak especially. And also other ghost movies/shows, such as The Orphanage, The Others, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mama, Paranormal Activity, The Conjuring I & II.
Panna a Netvor/Beauty and the Beast (1979), as well as Jean Cocteau's La Belle et la Bete.
Various dark fantasy movies and books from the 1980s/90s like The Dark Crystal, Legend, The Company of Wolves, etc. and Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber.
Shelley Duvall's Fairytale Theater "Beauty and the Beast" episode (literally why Susan Sarandon - who plays Beauty - is Sophie's fc)... and honestly, on that same note, Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy because the fucking music is so good, and Brad Dourif as Grima Wormtongue is the whole reason why the modern version of Edgar exists (and is his fc) lmao.
A Taste for Monsters by Matthew Kirby - and to add onto this, KIND OF?? Is that a lot of inspiration for TMATB came from the hate I feel towards some modern BATB retellings (i.e.- Sarah J Maas' A Court of Thorns and Roses series especially) that feature conventionally attractive 'Beasts' who are only beasts in the sense that they're awful, toxic, cruel people who, to me, don't deserve redemption or romance - or even friendship - as well as female protagonists who are just so, so unlikeable in their bitterness, idiocy, and Mary Sue-ness??? I wanted to write a romance that featured love interests that were unconventional in appearance, flawed but still likeable, and having a relationship that is healthy/consensual!
Cheating and adding a 6th one, but the works of Abigail J. Harding's Parliament of Rooks portfolio! GOTHIC BIRD MONSTER BELOVED!
Those Red Nights🌕🐺
Using Bob Odenkirk as a fc for a werewolf character - literally that's the whole reason why this story exists lmfao. So you bet I was watching the hell out of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad for inspo (and simp material)!
Silence of the Lambs, the movie especially! But there is also Thomas Harris' Red Dragon novel (and the movie starring Ed Norton and Anthony Hopkins, and the movie Manhunter) that was a source of inspiration!
David Fincher's Se7en - I wanted to write a neo-Noir story for a hot minute, especially ones with psychological horror elements!
Nightmare by Tuesday Knight - this just helped me develop the idea of TRN being a psychological horror, and writing about the themes surrounding nightmares, the haunting effects of guilt, etc.
Werewolf movies like Bad Moon and Silver Bullet
Temperance & Mr. Wyrm 🐍⚕️- I don't talk about this WIP much but I still think about it regularly!
Wanting to do a retelling of the fairytale "The Lindworm Prince" and also wanting to explore writing a weird body horror romance!
The Shape of Water - again, del Toro out here inspiring goofy fucking monster romances!
David Cronenberg's The Fly - tragic body horror romance goodness, my beloved!
General 1980s media and pop culture - a lot of this was kind of inspired by reading My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix! It's a book set in the 80s and utilizes the 80s nostalgia, but it also doesn't shy away from how ugly the 80s were in terms of social stigmas for people who weren't straight white men. In TAMW especially what I'd be alluding to is the stigma surrounding AIDS, and other blood-borne illnesses.
And, lowkey, wanting to have Gwendoline Christie as a fc for a character?? Like, idk, with who Temperance is as a character within the novella, Christie seems to fit her super well! Also the tall gf x short bf is a ship dynamic I ADORE! (also the character of Jack, the titular 'Mr. Wyrm,' is another character where I use Brad Dourif as a fc for but shhhhh i know I'm cringe, don't remind me)
These are the main WIPs I still work on!! There is also The Faeries and the Lark but that's more on the backburner for now, but that story was inspired by wanting to do a genderbent retelling of Sleeping Beauty but has now turned into a Gothic/dark fantasy Sapphic romance that's a funky blend between Sleeping Beauty and East of the Sun, West of the Moon that's inspired by Scandinavian folklore and seeing images of women in armor lmao.
But if there are any WIPs you'd wanna learn about, give me a shout and I'm more than willing to scream about these goofy, silly little stories!!

I also hate this "child soldiers" speech, it always seems like adults want to prevent children from feeling represented in fantasy stories
Personally, I think it comes from adults who are into children's stories interpreting them through an adult lens, which isn't necessarily bad, but it often results in this kind of bizarre analysis where these people don't want to admit that they're into media aimed at children, but they also don't want to engage in adult stories, so what they do instead is try to adultify the kids' stories they're into as if they were made for them.
It's fine to love children's media. I love children's media. What's not fine is pretending that everything is either for you or is inherently flawed if it isn't.
That's not to say that some kids' stories don't deal with serious topics or with the trauma experienced by the kid hero, but they don't deal with it the same way that, say, an adult story about kids experiencing horrors would. They aren't meant to, because the audience they have in mind is not the adult sitting there going "and where are your parents, young lady?" The intended audience is kids for whom navigating the adult world feels like facing a dragon on your own, and they want to feel like they can face it on their own, from a safe distance, of course. Which also explains why adults in kids' stories are often Like That.
I also blame recent kids media somewhat for this. The example I'm thinking of right now is Harry Potter, and now that it's popular to dunk on HP because the author is a weirdo terf I can mention that this was a problem I've always had with this series without being attacked, lol. If you witnessed those books being published in real time, you know that JKR wrote them intending the stories to grow with their audience. Which resulted in this weird tonal shift as the series went on and the original audience grew up. It was a move designed to keep the series relevant and increase profits, popularizing on nostalgia while also raking in new audiences, and it worked. But it's bad writing, and resulted in weird fandom takes like "Dumbledore is abusive." Dumbledore is a Roald Dahl character who no longer fit the series he was originally written for by the end. The last HP book felt like one of those bad "darker and grittier" parodies of itself. It felt like JKR was no longer interested in engaging in conversation with her kid audience on their level, and even felt contempt for them.
Adults have always been freaked out by kids' stories, and we often forget how resilient kids are. Adults want to protect kids, that's natural, and as an adult I feel the same way when I read kids' stories where the adults are absent or useless. But kids don't want to be protected, they want agency, and reading about kids having adventures that would never and should never happen to kids in the real world is a safe way for kids to practice exercising agency. The more sick and twisted, the better. I'm reminded of what Neil Gaiman said about Coraline, how adults often found it scarier than the kids who read it. Part of that is because Coraline taps into a very specific adult fear, but part of it is also that kids read it as an adventure story first.
And the thing is, when we deny the power of escapism, especially for children, when we insist that kids' media be viewed through the lens of serious business, we also, ironically, end up infantalizing the kid audience it was meant for in the first place. It's a form of purity culture that disguises itself with being dark and edgy and "adult," but in the end is actually very juvenile.

I know you reblogged the post about people being like "fictional cannibalism is deep and intellectual and fictional incest is disgusting and morally wrong" some time ago, but I just wanted to add that it’s absolutely insane how people are calling every piece of media that isn’t wholesome and unproblematic nowadays a direct reflection of the creator’s secret deviant fantasies à la "check their hard drive". Like where does the line between getting called a genius and a master satirist and being labeled a disgusting pervert lie? Whenever I see someone make absolutely nonsensical comments like those all I can think of is Vladimir Nabokov getting canceled and chased off the internet in 2023 after writing Lolita lmao. Seriously tho. Especially in the spn fandom, how can people make posts about loving the fucked up family dynamics and the body horror and the psychological terror and the abuse parallels etc and then fall over themselves to put wincesties DNI DNI DNIII all over their entire blogs lol
My take on it is basically that the line people draw between what’s “morally” acceptable to write about or not is really just what they enjoy. That’s why this stuff usually comes down to shipping nonsense, it’s just fandom flame wars in a different trenchcoat. It’s also why you’ll get dissonant opinions like ‘incest is bad and we can’t write about it’ and ‘gore and murder is just fine to write about.’ If someone enjoys writing about their thing, however dark, and can understand why they enjoy writing about it, of course they’ll give it a pass, but other people’s dark things? that they don’t like, don’t understand? Must be evil. Must be disgusting.
(Plus, obviously, there’s probably something to be said about how in ‘incest vs cannibalism’, one of these is going to be assumed to only be about Sex and Perversion, while the other is obfuscated around sex, sometimes a display of desire but easy to deny that at the same time. Which is not to say that writing about incest is even always about sex, only that it will be perceived as such, no matter what you’re actually trying to discuss in your work.)
All that to say that of course it’s ridiculous to assume that someone’s writing or hell, even their internet persona, is reflective of their desires. I’m ace as fuck and get nervous if I don’t have explicit permission to hug someone, and I also have and will write noncon fic. There’s no secret there, nothing hidden that’s gonna lead to me hurting someone. I just enjoy writing impossibly huge power imbalances. I like squeezing characters like stress balls.
The “Wincesties DNI” thing still bothers me to this day. Maybe because I’m not sure where I even fall on that line. I follow wincest blogs, like their posts, I’ve written I think 2 or 3 wincest fics? But I rarely participate in it or reblog stuff here. Am I a wincestie? Am I tainted by association in such a way that I might as well be? Does “Wincesties DNI” mean actually all incest shippers dni, or are you secretly telling me you’re cool with Jo/Ellen, or did you just forget in the midst of your ship war that other interests exist. I don’t usually follow blogs that announce that, but that’s more because putting that label there just tells me even if I passed the test on that specific thing for you, you’re not gonna be cool about all the other weird shit I post lmao.
(I want to stress, I think there’s a difference between “Wincesties dni” and “wincest dni”. I think that asking people to not leave tags on your posts or comments on your work referencing an incest ship is a valid boundary to have. If that content is triggering to you or just not your vibe, I think you should be able to say, ‘hey, not here.’ That is very different than going ‘if you are a part of this group or ever interacted with this group, get away from me.’ Especially in a fandom where. I mean. Sam & Dean being weird is in the text. It’s a huge part of the show to the point of being referenced repeatedly in-universe, it’s a famously huge part of the fandom to where wincest built the very ground (AO3) we all walk on, and I just think that if you walk into a gay bar, you really shouldn’t complain so loudly about all the bears you see.)
#so there’s my thoughts on this. probably said something like it before but to reiterate.#also if you’re wondering why I picked Jo/Ellen as the example incest ship that Wincesties dni banners don’t account for uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#(alsjfjlfjskfj actually you know what. this is my stance now. Wincesties dni banners are oppressive because they ignore#all us other perfectly problematic incest shippers. make a callout post for us too cowards!!!!!)#spn#ask#tw incest#tw cannibalism#<- also this I think it’s v reasonable to ask for tw so that you may block stuff you don’t wanna see#you may not get that but I think asking should always be an acceptable thing.#tagging for it is polite but not a requirement. especially if you’re like. NecrophiliacSamDeanFucker69 or something as ur url.#I feel like at that point the warnings maybe go out the window#but asking is good. if asked I will make an effort to tag my own posts at least with warnings.#what I reblog? probably not because I rarely tag that stuff. uh. oops.#anyway this has been fandom PSAs with will.#I’ve been doing this too long. im too tired to give a shit about ship wars.#look away dev
