"New" guy! You might have seen him before hehe

This is Iris, or rather how he used to look like in his younger days. In the current story he's an old retired criminal along with his boyfriend Buckthorn (by @furgemancs ) who was just as into heists as Iris.

I'm not quite sure how to talk about this guy's story yet, since we're kind of working out their past through two old coots remembering the days of their youth and puzzling them together as they do. It's very fun!

I'll toss some random stuff about him bellow

-So Iris and Buck are actually "side" characters that appeared with idea of being briefly just there to help two other characters (Astra and Thorn) but we got too attached lol

-The whole cowboy vibe for Iris is due to me watching Undertale Yellow at the time, sort of wanting to pull of a similar feel as Starlo because I didn't intend this guy to become a whole character like this haha!

-He lives with his boyfriend Buck in the middle of nowhere near some woods. They lie that they have riches due to being royalty that escaped to be free and do what ever they want which is why they hide away in the first place.

-The truth is, they used to work as criminals who stole stuff for themselves (and Iris for his abusive gang), mostly from noble or rich bugs, good or not.

-Iris and Buckthorn used to be heated rivals, competing for the prize of their heists. Buck was so cunning Iris hated his guts but over time they started having fun racing for the items they would steal, ended up getting used to each other and eventually close.

-Both had difficult pasts. Iris also worked for the gang akin to mafia while forcibly dating a girl from it so the two eventually had find a way to get away from all of that and not end up hunted down and murdered. It was hard but they eventually succeed, forcing them into hiding not just from getting away from the law but also the gang.

-Luckily, many many years later, they ended up growing old and safe at their humble home in the woods, with enough (stolen) riches to keep them retired for good~

-Iris can go from calm and collected to easily flared and upset depending on the situation. Both Buck and him are perceptive but Iris is not a smooth talker. He can be deceiving and if Buck is around the two are such a good tandem they'll make you buy any lie or truth they say.

-Iris is very very good with ropes and knots. Good at aiming with his crossbow! As young, he was able to fly well too and it helped him reach places and leave scenes faster.

That's all briefly put at least. Have doodles I have so far!

Oh my goodness! Haha thanks for showing me! And no, of course, this guy is still selling my dream while claiming it’s totally nothing to do with me. I hadn’t heard about it so thank you.

For those just joining us, here is the saga of the elder teletubbies:

1. in 2017 I posted a dream I had on Tumblr. In the dream I discovered that the childish teletubbies shown on BBC’s Teletubbies are merely the children of a species that grows up to be forest cryptids as adults. The post contained a detailed character description explaining how the children’s simple antennae become more complex antlers; their coats become thicker hair; their eldritch screens are unknowable; here, look:

The adult Teletubbies have more branching, complex antlers and shaggy coats. They are less brightly coloured. They are terrifyingly large. Their strangely human faces, emerging from the thick fur, are unquestionably adult; remote, serene, reproachful. Their television screens are glitchy, esoteric and unknowable. They are cryptids whose public exploitation has undermined their rarity and their strange, alien dignity.

That’s a pretty clear description.

2. The post quickly gained attention and many people drew art, made sculptures, designed in-depth character concepts, and even made DnD character sheets and entries with detailed notes. It was 2017. The post got over 90k notes. It had an extremely clear description of the cryptid in it. This wasn’t at all obscure.

3. The post and four pieces of the concept art, including the first piece by were screencapped and posted on r/tumblr. The post included this art by the now-deactivated @finoliatav which is, I think, the first piece of art. Most screencaps don’t show that it’s animated! Once you see it you can no longer pretend that any more work needs to be done in designing these characters, really - they’re all variations on a very clear theme.

4. A guy called Jars started drawing the BBC Teletubbies as adult Teletubbies. He noted on Reddit that his inspiration for the first one was the r/tumblr post but after that, he considered it entirely his own creative work. He drew each of the 4 BBC Teletubbies as adults using my character description and wrote a little story about how his character had stumbled upon them in the woods. He’s a good artist and his work went viral on Reddit and instagram. Those places being separate from Tumblr by the walls of the enclosure, they quickly believed the Jars was being highly original and praised him for it.

5. jars got carried away by his fame and started merchandising for all he’s worth. He’s selling elder teletubbies placemats. He got a collaborator to help him make and sell plushies.

6. Plushies of my character design applied to BBC characters. Jars sells them. To people. Who buy them. He sells these.

7. I think this is like… his job.

8. It has been years of this. I don’t think he has actually come up with anything else to sell by himself. But given that he now has millions upon millions of views on platforms I don’t use, let alone dominate (Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok) he seems to have fully subscribed to the idea that this is his THING.

9. After a while I wrote him a friendly email expressing that since my original dream was very much about discomfort with how the teletubbies were being exploited, I didn’t mind him selling his own art but that I wasn’t happy with him selling plushes based on my writing.

10. He wrote back along the lines of it all being his original intellectual property and absolutely nothing to do with me, etc, so jog on and don’t interfere.

11. I’m not entirely sure where the original intellectual property is when taking BBC characters and drawing them according to someone else’s detailed description of how to “evolve” them (branching antlers, shaggy coats, eldritch screens, serene adult human faces) especially having drawn them after seeing four separate detailed reference photos to base your own drawings on; especially when they’re the existing BBC characters from the show and not even your own. Like, Jars, you were given an entire detailed brief, several sets of references, an entire concept and a television show: the only artistic choices made here were to pick up your own personal pen and do the drawing. You have never deviated from my description, which you did not come up with yourself in any way. But okay Jars. You did some real intellectual heavy lifting here, this is Intellectual Property suddenly, and I guess this is your day job!

12. I myself actually have a day job, am capable of generating lots of other original material just for funsies, have never asked you guys for money, and I’m not generally huge jerk I don’t think. Also, I’m uncomfortable but have never been clear on how to stop him - I don’t think I can. So I don’t do much about this, apart from occasionally scream with hilarity with you guys about it.

13. Like this is the opposite of Goncharov. This is a guy making his wage on a 2017 tumblr collaborative shitpost insisting that this is the beautiful fruit of his only brain. And millions of people believe him.

14. There are now YouTube documentaries with millions of views and TikTok lore about Jars, and his lore, the Elder Teletubbies, which apparently he invented. People are making their wage talking about the history of Jars and his teletubbies lore. These documentaries are, if you can’t tell, not especially well-researched, as it is not difficult to find the original elder teletubbies art on the internet, which is all timestamped. Occasionally hilarious people from Tumblr point this out in the comments (thank you, you guys are hilarious) but the juggernaut is unstoppable!

15. Jars is now, apparently, doing a kickstarter to raise money for some kind of DnD sheets using the grown up BBC teletubbies.

16. I will point out that tumblr made and played with DnD teletubbies in 2017 for free and nobody had to pay $3000, but again. The juggernaut is unstoppable.

I have never, ever known what to do about this guy.

I have always been open to advice but genuinely never been able to articulate how it “damages” me, apart from ethical discomfort about how much I hate my writing being monetised by other people, especially when it was about my discomfort with exploitation. The juggernaut is unstoppable though. He fully intends to get thousands of dollars from this. He almost certainly will!

what's a simple character you ask?

simple characters are only made up by a few shapes, I've put some examples up. (some of these characters are not mine i just drew them for art fight/commissions) other examples includes Kirby and most kirby characters, level 1 (baby) Digimon, some pokemon, tamagotchis, sanrio characters, or your own simple oc, or anything similar to these examples

i like to take simple characters and make them look nice i can draw them in two ways, with a pencil brush or a pixel brush (pixel brush example is the Kirby with cowboy hat)

what can be in the picture: a simple character with a simple object if you desire it will be fully colored and shaded

want more than one character: each character is 35 usd I don't offer discounts on additional characters

Yesterday I was bored and tried to draw local bats gossiping about their cult life

This was just an excuse to try practicing how to draw bats with some diversity and ended up having a mini crisis midway as I realized I chose the species I sucked the most at drawing for my own bat-

What's funny to me is that...for some reason, SOME REASON, both characters were drawn-Hands On Hips-THREE TIMES. BOTH OF EM.

The fact I only drew my Petey with that kind of pose ONCE, and yet random artists do it on the spot for me is insane/silly.

And Yolay, ok well I DID draw her hands on hips in her own ref so...she gets a pass :3 and it fits her sm so I can't really argue XD

sketchy “dress up doll” outfit ref of Dawn, some lore and design notes under the cut!

Dawn is a wasteland wanderer known as a "stray" on a rocky, dry planet on the rim of a galactic empire in the far future! She is a calm and capable person who is generally kind but she is not very expressive and often feels detached from her own emotions, she is not a lousy fighter, skilled with a knife and a rifle, but that’s just out of neccessity of her lifestyle, she also has some arcane and healing knowledge. As most strays, she is not too keen to divulge her real name or who she was before she became a wanderer, the only thing people know for sure is that she has been one since she was a child. 

Some obvoius inspiration for the setting and story is all your favourite desert media, such as star wars, dune, mad max and trigun.

 For her outfit I looked at some demobaza clothes and star wars concept arts specifically but I have a whole pinterest board for this story so I have some other stuff there that were kind of an amalgamation of references, once an other artist drew her and interpreted her pants as calf length from an old drawing of her and I really liked that so I incorporated it here as well! Other stuff I wanted to include is a sport bra like undergarment not like the little bandeu I drew her with in the past, nothing too structured just something to keep the girls in place while she's running or jumping. A head covering is important of course, she lives in a sunny desert climate like place after all! And the firm ankle coverage that gave me some problems with the ankle lenght pants, so I ended up giving her sort of spats, they're for some protection against small venomous snake or scorpion like animals! They also have an added bonus of reminding me a little bit of foreign french legion vibe which matches the desert aestethic so happy accidents! Her poncho looks a bit too much like Jyn Erso's on that one concept art that is in my pinterest board and overall her clothes are bit too dark for desert dwelling I think, so when I come back to her design these are things I'm looking to improve!

I said I would make this account if multiple people were interested but went ahead and made it anyway, I can't get this au out of my head and I need more people to be obsessed with it WITH ME. Here are the refs I recently drew!

A small introduction and explanation. This Alternate Universe exhibits the idea of "What if Badgerclops was a full on bad guy, top tier villain in his home town, most dangerous guy around." I have a similar au, Mao Mao: Vice Versa but this is if Badgerclops left Maos side to be a villain once again.

The difference between these two ideas are:

Badgerclops is physically different, he's more violent and doesn't do petty crime as often, he's extremely dangerous, and badgermao is not a part of this au (not planned to be, at least)

The obvious similarities:

Badgerclops is a bad guy, he and Mao Mao fight... but that's about it.

I'm going to go into a little lore to maybe help those who would like to ask the characters questions.

Mao Mao broke the Ruby Pure Heart on accident, after fighting the sky pirates which is similar to canon so not much has changed with him. His physical appearance is different but that's because his path of life is different from canon. He's mental state and personality are also a bit shifted, ask him a few questions to see what I mean 👀

Badgerclops arrives a few days or weeks before Mao Mao, he was harassing and battling the Sky Pirates for territory before MM showed up and revealed the valley. Since then he causes problems and has to be stopped by MM. He's been going around stealing and harming people for his own reasons, and will now do the same thing in PHV. His physical appearance and mental state/ personality are also pretty divergent from canon so ask him a few questions to see how similar or different he is from canon Badgerclops 👁️

Adorabat still lives with Eugene but she sneaks out when she wants to be trained and taught to fight. She witnessed a fight between Mao Mao and Badgerclops and can't tell if she wants to be a hero or villain. Both seem exciting and fun, much less boring than her everyday life in PHV. Mao Mao tries to tell her why being good is so important but it seems she's imprinted on Badgerclops, who thinks it's funny to mess with their dynamics. Her physical appearance is different from canon but her personality is mostly the same, ask her why she looks the way she does for some answers :))))))

I plan on writing and posting a fic eventually but I can't promise it'll be the best read on the block, I'm terrible with vocabulary :')

When Hell Froze Over

Background Info - In a world where women no longer exist, society is split into two; dominants (the ruling class) and valets (who possess the 'inualidus chromosome' that allows them to bear children). Stripped of basic human rights, valets are expected to be entirely subservient to the dominants that claim them and few are prized higher than the valets of the WWE. Seth Rollins and CM Punk are both such valets and are married to Roman Reigns and The Undertaker, respectively.

Summary - Seth Rollins had it all and was convinced nobody could take it away from him. Until the static hit!

He was the Visionary! He was the Revolutionary! He was Seth Freakin' Rollins!

And he was on top of the world!

Standing in the cage, he closed his eyes and savoured the sound of the crowd chanting the sweeping notes of his entrance music long after the TitanTron had gone quiet, waving his arms to encourage them to carry on and on and on. Precious gold hung heavy around his waist, the World Heavyweight Championship, symbolising his position as the top dog on Monday Night Raw. The headliner, the main-eventer, the face of the brand. Even backstage, he was looked up to and respected, acknowledged by all as the valet locker-room leader.

Meanwhile his husband Roman Reigns, the Tribal Chief and dominant locker-room leader, was making headlines with his historic reign as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion over on Smackdown, proving once and for all that he was the Head of the Table, while his other husband, fellow valet and recently re-branded Jon Moxley, was dominating the 'other company' with his faction, the brutal Blackpool Combat Club.

The Shield may no longer exist in paper, but nobody could deny their stranglehold on the current wrestling landscape. Sweeter still, nobody came close to challenging them for it.

Not even the Judgement Day! Chasing their newest runt, JD McDonagh to the top of the cage, Seth and his team mate, Sami Zayn, grabbed hold of their foe. Ignoring his pleas for mercy, they threw him towards a waiting Randy Orton below who executed a picture perfect RKO to finish off the Irishman, adding him to the list of his fallen brothers. All it took was a Cross Rhodes for Cody to metaphorically cut off the head of their leader, Damian Priest, and going in for the pin, the ref counted the one, two, three.

The bell rang and the crowd went wild for their victory. Grinning from ear-to-ear, Seth lapped up the applause, his body wracked with the pain and exertion of the brutal War Games match. Below him, Cody was embracing his husband, Randy, who had triumphantly returned from an eighteen month absence due to a back injury. Seth gazed warmly at the happy pair but beneath his smile, his cogs were already turning. Randy was no push-over in the ring, and Cody, the prodigal son, had a way with the crowd that almost rivalled his own. They were potential threats, ones that could prove dangerous in the future. However, as of that moment in time, they were on the same team and on the same wavelength. Seth wasn't worried. He was too engrossed in relishing his fresh victory, cherishing the noise of adoration from the WWE Universe.

And then the static hit!

Somehow the noise grew, a jet engine roaring in his ear.

'No! No fucking way!'

And there he was! Sauntering in with a plain white shirt and the smuggest grin on his face. As if he had any business being there at all!

CM Punk! Phil fucking Calaway, himself!

Seth couldn't believe his eyes, this couldn't be happening. Punk was finished, washed up, done! He'd been fired from that pissant company, branded a thug, a bully, a locker-room cancer. He'd had his character, his reputation and legacy dragged so viciously in the dirt that he'd never clean his slate again. Never!

So, how the fuck was this happening?

Seth saw red! Pushing back his stunned teammates, he stomped out the cage door, heading for the ramp. His path was blocked by refs and production crew, sensing the rage pulsing through the champion's veins. Seth didn't care. He saw the so-called Best in the World posturing at the entranceway, taking selfies with fans, teasing them with taps on his wristwatch.

And they were lapping it all up! They should have booed him out of the building like they were doing on those other shows, blowing the roof off with chants of 'CM Sucks! CM Sucks!' Not welcoming him back with open arms like some conquering hero. This wasn't fair! This wasn't right!

He had walked out on them nearly ten years ago. He had abandoned them all; the company, the valet division, the fans, even those that needed him most. Right when they'd finally given him the ball, he'd dropped it and never looked back. Not only that but he had done everything in his power to tear it all down since.

So now, he could just... walk back in?

NO! He wasn't having it! Not in his company!

'Woah, woah! Easy there.' He had more people around him now; Cody and Sami, even Michael Cole and Corey Graves had left the commentary table to try and calm Seth down, force him back. It only ignited the fire further.

It was all caught on a fan's mobile phone. How he had repeatedly stuck up his middle fingers at Punk, swearing bloody murder at him with the foulest language he could muster. It would become viral, as much a talking point of that night as the return that proved hell had truly frozen over.

CM Punk was back in the WWE.

While everything else; the War Games match, the victory, even Orton's return all fell away into the background.

Even for Seth, who now had only one focus, one vision. Hearing Punk spew his empty apologies, prattling on about conquering his white whale of main-eventing Wrestlemania, saying that he was finally 'home' before signing that dotted line that tied him to the red brand - Seth's brand! - caused that wrath inside of him to bubble into a boiling froth until he could stand it no longer.

His music hit and he stormed out to the ring. Standing toe-to-toe with his former friend, now his bitter enemy, he stared down the older valet without fear. Eyeing up the deeper lines in his face, the grey in his beard, the new scars marring his skin. Behind those pursed lips, he knew a tooth was missing. Punk had changed in so many ways.

But so had Seth. He was no longer the kitten, and he had outgrown the Architect. He was now the veteran, the top guy, the champion, and Punk was beneath him in every way possible.

'Don't you dare call this place your home!' Seth warned the older man. 'This is my home! This is our home and I will do everything in my power to protect it from people like you!'

Punk looked on, his arms crossed across his chest, blinking slowly like a bored cat. Never once making a move to grab a mic himself.

'I'm going to say this plainly, with every fibre of my being,' he paused, ensuring he could see the look on Punk's face as he uttered, 'I hate you!' It stung him, the older valet ducking his head. 'The truth always comes out, pal, and I know, you know, everybody here knows... this is your last chance.' Another pause, letting the significance of his words set in. 'So one of two things is gonna happen; you either expose yourself and self-destruct like you always do. Or if, by some miracle, you have changed, and you've got any gas left in this old tank? Maybe one day you'll be lucky enough to stand across the ring from me, in a World Heavyweight Championship match and then I will expose you for the fraud that you are!'

Finally, finally, Punk grabbed a microphone and Seth readied himself. The other valet was notorious on the mic, it had been what had propelled him above the rest, that had broken down barriers and glass ceilings, that had changed the entire culture of wrestling as a whole. He knew that whatever was coming his way was bound to be brutal.

'Are you done?' the older man asked, patronisingly. Seth tried to keep calm, hide his ire. 'That's your one free pass to stand here and speak to me disrespectfully without me coming after you.' Pass? A free pass? Seth didn't need a fucking free pass! But he had no time to argue back as Punk went on, announcing that he was entering the Royal Rumble. 'And when CM Punk wins, maybe, Seth, it's you, he's coming after!'

The confrontation was over, and even though by all standards, it should have been another victory for Seth, it felt hollow. What good was winning a war of words when his enemy refused to fight?

But he was coming for him, he knew that for certain now. He wanted that main event at Wrestlemania, he wanted that shot at the World Heavyweight Championship.

He couldn't let that happen.

But then, as a Scottish poet once said, "the best laid schemes o' mice an' men, gang aft a-gley." Seth injured his knee a few weeks later. He would not be able to fulfil his promise himself.

So he took inspiration from another Scot...

There had been another who was equally enraged at Punk's return. That same night, at Survivor Series, he had stormed out when Cult of Personality hit. So- sprite is actually two concepts (with two different designs) who got reversed mitosised into one guy, one was a self insert oc from my first full playthrough of pokemon crystal and one was a gym leader oc.

I'm not sharing old art of sprite because honestly looking at anything I've done more than a month ago makes me cringe however- I did an approxmation of "sprites" first design with some fun facts.

Also yes his '!' shirt used to look like that. I actually changed sprites colour scheme because I showed my friend some art and they were like "omg like mcdonalds sprite. is that why hes in the mcdonalds colours." . mortifying. changed immedaitly after.

I dont think I got it across in this version at all but gym leader sprite was supposed to be a punk and had a full patch jacket and stuff.

A lot of sprites design was really open to change when I first started the account, his hair would vary from being over one eye to being over both- his scars would move around since i forgot to make a ref. A lot of stuff just solidified over time the more I drew him the more I figured him out <3. The more I rp'ed as him, the more he became his own character and I got a sense for his likes and dislikes and it impacted his design.

Now drawing him is super duper ingrained into my head and whenever I open a new canvas there is always one of these guys

He also used to have upturned ears, not much to say on those, other than i liked the downturned look more, and changed it in november of last year.

He also kept the blue in his hair after him running away and attempting to dye his hair blue in an effort to disguse himself. He's kept it in the tips since for reasons that he can't explain .

Onto Beedrill! (did some doodles of his old design)

His design changes are really recent because at the start he just wasn't- interesting y'know. just some blonde dude.

But also BD was also first known for sending people meme shirts via pelipper mail so he didnt really need to be more than that. I think the googles and staff helped a little (speaking of which, looking at maybe giving him his staff back sometime)

As his storys become more relevant, I've needed to spice up his design, which I'm happy I did with the funky pokemon esque hair. The fox mask also helps him seem more interesting, but him wearing it isn't common enough to count.

I'm currently doing a redesign of his prosethic finger and another part of his design which i'm excited to share once i'm done.

Now mari!

Not much to say with her old design, her clothes and such were picked out my maris creator and cowriter, and she was supposed to look put together yet ready to fall apart at any moment. She was a real villian, but I've never been unhappy with her design and how it's reflected her personality.

I did like how in maris first apperance, lucians (her bayleefs) leaf was completely seared off along with having severe burns on its body, but by the time she got her blog it was full again as mari has saved up to get a coleus plant implant to regrow the leaf, along with the scars on him fading from her use of burn cream she was sent.

how do you deal with art/writer's block?

You deal?

No but genuinely uhhhh good question. Funny thing was just a few days ago I came off of one of my most debilitating art blocks yet. Usually, my blocks work like this: when I am art blocked, I will write. When I am writers blocked, I will draw. My art blocks usually don’t last more than three days. My writers blocks can last a couple months.

It really sucks, though, when both blocks strike at the same time. My most recent one, as I mentioned, was just terrible. It lasted a little over a week (which I know isn’t a very long time, but it’s much longer than what I’m used to!) and I spent every day trying to get out of that slump. I tried to force myself to finish some WIPS (Miraak ref sheet, Dagon lineart shading piece), made a new character + ship (Harwith and Ghorbash), and pushed my way through an animatic. A lot of the week was simply spent playing God of War in my free time though, lol.

For me, art block is just a lot of padding and waiting it out. But I think something that really helped me this go around was realizing that I didn’t have to work on projects necessarily. I tend to enjoy 99% of all my art once it’s finished, so it was hard to figure out what was a project and what was a “just for fun” piece. Once I worked that out, I just drew some things that made me happy: a new Ego design, and some light experimentation with my favorite cannibal lad. That gave me a lot of inspiration to work on a whole new animatic, which was.. very strange, but very eye-opening! From there I’ve tried to get a good grasp on what I consider projects vs pleasure pieces.

In short: I think 70% of the process is just waiting it out. It’s miserable and I feel so sluggish during those days, but it’s all I can really do. Hammering out some WIP pieces kept the hand steady for when I would climb out of my hole, but it’s not something that I’ve ever been able to force to end. I don’t have much advice, but I do have experience, so maybe even a new perspective would help assist other artists in learning about and exploring their own art block? Idk, just some food for thought.

ohh man i miss those days so much. my small group of friends in junior high were really into writing about our sparkledog ocs on proboards. we had our own private one dedicated exclusively to our ocs. all our ocs had human, quad and anthro forms and there were so many romantic scandals and plots going on it was MCU levels of convoluted sometimes.

sidenote my best friend at the time and i had a monopoly on the oc roster [it just happened that way] and made up a bunch of wolf gods that drew inspo from greek/roman mythology. each one was a deity of Something and had unique powers. EVERYONE was paired with a mate that somehow managed to corresponded with their own respective power. they had so much going on we often had multiple threads specifically for certain paired characters. if i remember right we created threads for refs, threads for lore, specific universe categories and so on. there was a point i'd even made a seperate website using my neopets-petpage level of html understanding [not too unlike refsheet.net or charahub], listing the bios and relationships of our characters.

my fondest memory was spending the better part of a school year rewriting our ocs into Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End. no, we never rewrote the first or second film. ONLY the third. during this rp we were juggling multiple characters at once, and we did our best to give each character SOMETHING to do. I don't remember which scene we were rewriting but my friend had this old wolf dude named Bon who had NOTHING to do in the moment, so she ended up writing "Bon Breathed" full stop and that shit has stuck with me as the most hilarious thing for well over a decade. We rewrote one or two other things, like Underworld, but the PotC 3 au one was the longest running one.

we all rped together for a few years. by the end of high school i was super interested in making a webcomic for a bit because i'd just discovered resident evil and saw the blackblood wolves starting their comic on deviantart, buuut everyone else was being pressured into picking career paths and/or had lost their creative spark. gotta grow up, i guess.

I've long since lost contact with every person from that group. the majority dropped off the face of the planet immediately after graduation. it sucks, but I still have a bunch of their OC art carefully stored in page protectors in a binder on the shelf beside my desk. i still have notes on each character, and i still have some art from our early deviantart days saved on an external hard drive. i'll likely never see those people again, but the memories leave a warm fond feeling in my chest. i frequently catch myself wondering if i should start that comic i always wanted to make with them.

one of my goals for this year is to update some of my old ocs -- though technically speaking both of these are canon characters in one way or another -- and so, y’know, i thought i’d make a strong start

Shinguro Ryumiya (新黒 竜宮)

Capable of manipulating darkness

Ryumiya was born from, well, the joke of Rumia. The idea that a youkai of darkness was meant to be intimidating, but ended up being just a weakling. But, you know, darkness used to be a lot scarier than it is now -- if anything, with all the electric light pollution, perhaps we don’t have enough darkness.

So that got me thinking; what if Rumia wasn’t always a weakling? What if she used to be really strong? What if -- and bear with me -- she used to be one of those really strong youkai who helped build the Barrier, but she did it too late, and ended up reduced to little more than a feral beast?

More than that, what if, by storing a little bit of her power in that charm in her hair, just enough to keep a bit of what she used to be around, and with a little bit of scheming, she could get it all back?

Then I turned those ideas into a very rough draft for a fangame with her as the final boss, got through about a route and a half, and got distracted. That’s the same game as those two fish I reblogged ages back without context, actually.

But she’s here now! The concept of Ryumiya is that she tied her idea of darkness to more unknown, abyssal darknesses, like deep space and the ocean floor and even stuff like eldritch gods and the like in order to make herself into something that humans still don’t understand and thus fear.

She’s much more powerful than she was even for a long time before raising the Barrier; in addition to her traditional powers of darkness manipulation, she gained the ability to create youkai from the ocean depths (there could be anything down there, after all) and she gained the ability to create pseudo-black holes from deep space (not that she can control them once she creates them, though, so they usually pop pretty quickly). Of course, having spent a full century as a weakling, she’s still kind of a loser, but that’s her charm point.

Iwanaga Yatsugi (岩長 弥継)

Capable of manipulating volcanic activity

Yatsugi comes from... I think specifically it was talking about a character belonging to someone in the occasional discord who was tied to Youkai Mountain that made me think about its other resident kami, but truthfully I’d been thinking about her since I first read that one chapter of CiLR. After that, it was really just a matter of, well, making my own claim of the identity of the Hakurei Kami.

Because like, despite only being mentioned twice, Iwanagahime is kind of important to Gensokyo, right? She’s the kami of eternity, so she’s who Akyuu prays to; and she’s the kami of Yatsugatake -- that is, Youkai Mountain -- so presumably she was involved in the negotiations surrounding Gensokyo’s location.

Probably? I mean, I don’t think ZUN really thinks about this bit of lore so much, but at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised if he dropped something in the next chapter of CoLA that totally contradicts this idea. But that’s why she looks like Reimu.

Until then, though: Iwanaga Yatsugi. Not a Sage (she’d honestly be amused to be regarded as such), but rather the foremost representative and the greatest beneficiary of the establishment of Gensokyo. Honestly, I feel like she’s probably not a hugely active character, unlikely to cause or resolve an incident, but probably shows up to parties a lot. Mostly acts like a retired old person who doesn’t have to work and spends all their time doing a relaxing hobby (in her case, using heat and pressure to create precious gems).

I drew her with Reimu as a point of comparison, but obviously canon says Reimu doesn’t know who the Hakurei Kami is -- but then again, Reimu’s never been the most observant...

Unlike Ryumiya, I never really had plans for Yatsugi beyond making her, but she exists now. They both exist. I might put them in a piece of writing at some point (sooner if anyone requests. wink wink) but until then. Please enjoy responsibly

Hello! Since you said that you have Mors for nearly ten years I am curious how he came to be and how much he (maybe) changed in all those years. (Really amazing character btw <3)

Thank you for your compliment and question! Very interesting question and the answer will be... big. And full of my old cringey drawings, enjoy. :D

So, it was far 2014, in my rat era (at that time I was obsessed with rats, but I still love them). Searching for rat art I came across a bunch of rat-dragon hybrids and it inspired me to make my own design. So I made the first sketch (December 2 as I can track) and as I decided to make it not just general species design but a distinct character I drew this colored ref.

So basically it was just a rat-dragon, neutral but pretty aggressive.

Mors was one of my characters, who developed through text rp. And for one rp plot my friend suggested to make Mors demon and insert him as an antagonist. It was about half a year after his creation and since then he is an evil demon.

But at that time Mors had pretty plane, one-dimensional personality and his motivations usually came from his hedonism, greed, possessiveness, sadism and ill curiosity. He still got that features now, but I've added some more dimensions.

Coming up with his humanization (so it doesn't piss me off) was a long path.

I believe, this sketch was the first, where I decided to give Mors this... ehh... side bang (but here it isn't as long as now).

And as general design wasn't changing so much, his personality was constantly undergoing some modifications. Mostly related to empathy and romance (and some of his powers, but it all has blended in my head, so I won't go into details). So it shifted from "his inability to love is a punishment and he is unsympathetic bastard" to "demons can't love so they don't get vulnerable" then to "he can't love due to his psychopath and narcissist nature". Even that has changed a little — Mors can love, but it can be almost as dangerous and traumatizing as his hate, since he doesn't know how to make healthy relationship.

In 2019 I made redesign and these colors are still actual now. As I remember, his personality was pretty similar to what he has now, only shifting a little.

About inspirations and influences. I suppose, maybe Mors' palette and this goatee were influenced by Jafar from Aladdin. Or maybe goatee came from basic image of Devil/Mefistopheles as is his whole archetype. Also he took his exquisite manners, calm demeanor and tailcoat with gloves from Sebastian from Black Butler. Hannibal from series defined his cruel and manipulative side and Lucifer, also from series, gave him that "Oh no, I'm a monster 😭" drama queen thing. Actually I once started to make his kin list but forgot about it mid-process. I will make it, I promise.

So, Mors came the long path from quite plane character, both in design and personality, to a complex person with his virtues, flaws and inner conflicts. He is still a bad guy though, but it doesn't mean he can't get better *wink*.
