Thank you for explaining that you are talking about the characters. However, a lot of people with opinions similar to yours berate Scott for being “mean” to Joel and assume that Scott and Joel must genuinely hate each other. I am very sorry that I made the assumption that you were talking about the ccs.

Personally, I don’t feel like their rivalry is one-sided, but Scott is pretty neutral to Joel until Joel does something that offends Scott or Scott’s allies, regardless of whether it’s Scott’s closest allies or secondary allies.

Also, I didn’t say that Joel committed any crimes. I felt like you were applying crimes where there weren’t any. I don’t feel like Scott nor Joel have committed crimes for killing in a death game within the rules of the game.

I’m also not saying that Joel had no reason to go after Scott. I am saying that Joel has a vendetta against Scott. It’s not a real vendetta, of course, but he does target Scott on purpose. He has talked about this before.

The main problem I had with what you were saying was that many of Joel’s fans actively hate Scott because they believe that Scott and Joel genuinely dislike each other. I am sorry that I made an unfair assumption about you, but you are accusing me of things that I didn’t do. I didn’t say that you were erasing Joel’s crimes. I actually erased Joel’s crimes myself, because I don’t think that killing an enemy in a death game should be considered a crime.

My serious posts are mostly about the ccs because a lot of people attack cc!Scott for things that everyone else in the Life Series does too. That does include when people claim that they are talking about c!Scott, but Scott isn’t necessarily participating in roleplay so much as being himself with his friends. It’s really rough to be called the things people call Scott (“toxic”, “manipulative”, “controlling”, etc.) when you’re just playing a game with a good friend. You can tell that it’s having an effect on the creators, too. For example, Scott deciding not to team up with Pearl in Double Life wasn’t a decision Scott would’ve made without audience pressure not to team up with someone twice in a row, and Scar and Grian refusing to team up since Double Life was also audience pressure. You can tell that the criticism has been crossing the line for some creators, especially recently. That’s why I get so frustrated when people criticize the Life Series “characters” when they’re not having character moments, such as when you talked about Scott killing Joel in Limited Life and telling him that he deserved it. I understand that you did not mean it this way, but many people look at moments like those, which are clearly just lighthearted teasing between friends, and blow them completely out of proportion and attack Scott for it. I hope you can understand why that’s frustrating, especially when it so often only happens to creators who aren’t masculine cishet white men.

I just saw a post talking about how Scott always goes after Joel and Joel has never done anything to Scott and “if you watch Joel’s perspective, it’s totally uncalled for”.

First of all, it’s a death game. They don’t need a reason to kill each other. Scott and Joel are very close friends outside of the game. They used to be neighbors. The people who are closest tend to go after each other the hardest, because they’re the most comfortable with ending each other’s seasons.

Secondly, it is not at all uncalled for. Joel’s whole thing is being a menace. He was upset when someone on reddit said that he’s “lawful good” in the Life Series. He said that his goal is to be “chaotic evil”. Joel is a constant menace to Scott and many of Scott’s allies. As a Joel viewer, you might see that as Joel being clever or powerful, but he is just a menace to almost everybody else and that is literally his goal. Of course Scott would want to push back a little.

Third, sure. Joel often doesn’t effectively do much to Scott. This is NOT due to a lack of effort. Joel tries incredibly hard to irritate Scott. It’s his love language. Joel and Scott are close, and Joel thinks it’s hilarious to get Scott riled up. It’s like targeting your brother in a game for the crime of being your brother. Joel failing to do harm to Scott is not the same as Joel doing nothing to hurt Scott. Joel has repeatedly made his intentions clear.

Fourth, the poster specifically mentioned that Scott killed Joel in Secret Life “without a reason”. Joel spent a whole episode of Secret Life recruiting three people to kill Scott. I think their rivalry is a pretty good reason, but, again, they don’t really need a reason. It is a death game. They are friends. They were on different teams. They are bound to attack each other. That’s how the game works.

Joel fans, you don’t ever have to defend Joel from Scott. If you were a real Joel fan, I think you would know that Joel loves Scott dearly and that’s why he’s such a menace to him. Don’t attack Scott for his mutual friendship with Joel. They know each other’s boundaries and have never stepped on them. The members of the Life Series have stated again and again that everyone in the Life Series shows a healthy and mutual respect and love for everybody else in the series and that, if it made it into a video, everyone is okay with it. Joel and Scott literally take time out of their day to excitedly talk about their sessions with each other by themselves. Take a chill pill. Scott and Joel are just fine.

rewatching season one really makes me see how will's right, mike is the heart.

he's the one who insisted to look for will to hopper.

he's the one who convinced lucas, and dustin by proxy, to ignore the adults and look for will.

he is the one who brings up the fact that el is scared and hurt while lucas and dustin are yelling.

all these examples are within ep 1 and the first fourty seconds of episode two. mike was always the heart. he just lost his way after outside expectations. at the end of the day, he is the care and love and protection of the group.

of course mike is going to date el even if it doesn't make him happy. of course he's going to conform to ideals of the outside world. all he wants are for his friends to be happy, so he'll conform to the expectations of what the outside world says he should want, what his friends think he wants, what el wants. fuck, even what he thinks will wants, since the painting. he is the perfect victim for comphet, because it was never about him. it was always about his friends.

I do think there's something special about the way that audio drama creators seem to love including cameos of voice actors from other popular audio dramas. Obviously, part of the reason why actors from one show might pop up in another is because the audio drama creator community is relatively small and interconnected, and also because those actors are very talented.

But there's also often such a sense that creators are having fun with these cameos. Like Greater Boston casting audio drama heavyweights Briggon Snow, Zach Valenti, and Felix Trench as famous film actors Matt Daemon, Ben Affleck, and Mark Wahlberg respectively. Or Faux and Stallion having Tom Crowley (who plays a Victorian detective in Victoriocity) pop up as Dr Watson. Or Unseen casting Beth Eyre and Felix Trench as characters who are twins. Or Arden getting Emma Sherr-Ziarko to play an actor impersonating a character played by her former Wolf 359 costar Michelle Agresti (with Michaela Swee also appearing as an actor impersonating the other main Arden lead).

In these cases, it's not just that there's a cameo, but that the cameo is given particular (often comedic) significance to those who are aware of the featured actor's other work. The vast majority of people wouldn't recognise any of these voices. But by doing these very intentional cameos, these creators show confidence that a fair chunk of their audience will know these actors and enjoy the link. There's an awareness that listeners of one audio drama are fairly likely to listen to (or at least be aware of) other fiction podcasts, even when the shows in question aren't of particularly similar genres. Recognising these cameos feels like being in on a secret. It feels like these shows are giving a little nod to listeners to say that we're part of the same club.

Recently I heard from my Professor about a discourse going on Twitter about a PhD thesis titled "Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose" by Amelia Louks, a Cambridge scholar.

To be simple, the thesis is about olfactory oppression. To quote "Olfactory oppression itself is a form of discrimination based on body odour, or smell of an individual".It is also expanded to oppressed communities at large, of course.

So, anyway, I'm not at all well versed in this topic, and I could be wrong. I don't know but it just reminded me of…

Okay, that is in Stranger Things season 2, Mike, Max and Lucas looks for Dart in the dumpster, and it is Lucas who gets into the dumpster and actually looks for him where the other characters stand outside, ready to attack if Lucas finds him.

So, right after Lucas jumps out of the dumpster, Max comments "you stink" and goes to the opposite side and stands near Dustin. I just thought, Why Lucas? Why not Max? Considering Max would have probably winced at the thought of getting into the dumpster, we have Mike, who previously had shown a lot more enthusiasm about finding Dart. So why not him? Maybe Mike bickered, leading Lucas to get into the dumpster, or simply it could have also been Lucas who agreed to do this first.

Moving on, later in the episode we have Lumax arguing about Max being treated poorly by the boys. So when Max leaves she comments “you still stink by the way” again. (Lucas smells his clothes afterwards), Which follows with Billy's Racist remarks; first he glares at Lucas as he walks away. Second, he questions Max about what she was doing with him and why she looks upset, then he continues.. by saying, and I quote, “There are certain types of people in this world that you stay away from, that kid Max… that Kid is one of them, Stay away from him you hear me? Stay away.”

What made me write this was how right after Max comments “you still stink btw”(which can be looked as an implied Racist remark), The next scene cuts to Billy throwing explicit Racist remarks at Lucas.

I'm not at all implying Max is a Racist Just thinking maybe it was intentional. Intentional by the writers, not saying max was being Intentional. Also, I didn't read the thesis entirely, only the Abstract, and I think it is mostly to do with Body Odour and Individual smells rather than someone stinking because they jumped into the dumpster. Just thought this was Interesting and I know this is a very sensitive topic. I feel like I'm just rambling at this point. Love Lucas Sinclair sooooo much(mwah mwah).

So it's been an entire week of Wicked-the-Movie-part-the-first being completely unavoidable and I am so.freaking.tired.

And why am I still going on about why I didn't love it? Because it's one of those things that people vaguely know I'm a fan of the show. So they keep asking me what I thought and I'm just overtired enough to still launch into an incoherent explanation of why it didn't work for me.

That explanation is entirely meaningless, because I am really not the intended audience. I never really thought I would be (probably from about the moment they cast Ariana Grande, if we're being honest). And mostly that's because I read the book multiple times 20+ years ago and I've seen the west end production 20+ times since then. I've sidetracked NYC trips to see it on Broadway and to San Francisco to see it at the original workshop theatre and I remain obsessed with the 2007 Broadway cast. I did indeed show up to the opening night screening dressed in pink and green and I have two different types of Chistery plushies sat on my sofa idk??

I'm a.. fan, to all intents and purposes. But I'm too much of a fan to want a new version that doesn't really add anything meaningful to how the show tells the story - part one is an hour longer than the show and yet it moves it further away from the book, if anything. It took me a LONG time to process how the show adapted the book back in 2006 but the show added that goddamn all time great soundtrack dammit. The movie adds pretty much.. nothing of note?

The things that bug me about the movie are not things that would ever occur to the people asking me what I thought it the film, and they're probably irrelevant to other people who consider themselves long term fans. Everyone is a fan in their own way, and that's great. It also means I reserve the right to want the character choices to make sense (they do not make sense. Why is Elphie being treated like a grown adult and not even enrolled at school?? Why is she wearing a version of her Act 2 dress TO THE OZDUST and not only undermining the costume reveal in Defying Gravity but also making the lyrics of Popular MAKE NO SENSE to the point they then ...have to invent the word 'froat' for absolutely no reason? This version of Elphie does not actually even need a makeover. Why are we even here, folks? I'm so confused 😭)

What I wanted was the damn film made fifteen years ago with a lot fewer intense close ups starring... Literally any of the show cast, idk? Idina and Kristen, Julia Murney and Kendra Kasselbaum, Kerry Ellis or Rachel Tucker, idk I have a lot of favourite Elphies?? Actually let's not get started on casting because *sob* Ariana Grande?? really?? And I will yet again be baffled why every other shot of the film was a close up of the actor's face. It's a musical. The songs are designed to be viewed from a distance. As per the show, the cast are very much decades older than the characters they are playing, but unlike the show this then becomes VERY OBVIOUS in close up on a cinema screen. In IMAX it was veering on fucking terrifying at times, and Ariana Grande becomes an abject lesson in how lip filler can go horribly wrong *shudder*

Here's the other thing: I know full well the show creatives were involved in the film as well, so I'm not sitting here complaining about John Chu per se (although I am also complaining about a fair few of his choices to over-egg the existing story). Stephen Schwartz is just as responsible for how the songs sound in the movie. The choices to keep the nonsensical points of the show plot but pad out the runtime to bizarrely now give you time to notice that the plot structure verges on nonsensical. There's a whole clash of sensibilities as to how they approached the work 20+ years ago compared to now, and to what it meant to me back then and now as well.

Yep everyone else loves it. Good for them. I'm just kinda being forced to keep having pointless conversations about why I didn't love it and it's giving me thinky thoughts about what the hell fandom means in that context idk.
