I did go to Sephora yesterday and the Internet wasn't lying or over exaggerating! I saw, in fact, MULTIPLE 8-12 year olds shopping there. although a lot/most of the actually youngest ones had parents trailing them.
specifically please pour one out for one dad trailing his preteen girls lmao. That man had the ultimate dad (or parent) expression that combined resigned exhaustion with supportiveness and searching bewilderment hoping for solidarity among adults. Or possibly rescue
.
Anyways one of them darted in front of me to reach/snatch at something she wanted because she was too nervous to say "excuse me," although I had already noticed her telling her mom what product she was looking for and was actively already stepping aside when she zoomed in to do this! I was making space and she literally was too excited to just wait three more seconds.
I mostly found the darting funny because she was clearly just afraid to talk to another person who wasn't her mom (nervous hand clasping, whispering to her mom's ear, hesitant hover back), but also like sweetie, your mom SHOULD encourage you to not snatch things or reach over people and say out loud "excuse me," even if it IS scary. I pre-emptively moved over when I saw what she was saying, she was just faster lol.
I will think on how to gently help them with this next time. I probably could've said something like "hey, it's okay to say excuse me so I can move over more for you! We can both look!"
This little girl DID open the box of what she was looking at which?? Why did her mom not tell her not to do that?? But she didn't unseal product.
Also this is what she wanted:
For anyone fascinated/horrified by the phenomenon of pre-teen girls being sold absurd skincare standards by TikTok, but who doesn't know much about the products involved:
This is a watermelon glow face serum. Serum is basically liquidy topical skincare products. They're often used for a more concentrated delivery of an active ingredient in your skincare. A little can go a long way.
In this case, the serum is boosting in order: (1) niacinamide, which is a type of vitamin B3 that helps your skin build keratin (for firmness), and the natural lipid barrier which helps you retain moisture. It can also help with inflammation/redness/coloration (acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation). (2) literal watermelon extract which idk says it delivers amino acids and hydration in the marketing. It's probably harmless. It's a good add for marketing, Glow recipe does fruit themed products. And (3) hyaluronic acid which could sound scary but is just a humectant that helps prepare skin to receive moisture, like in your moisturizer. (Fair warning: a straight hyaluronic acid serum is not enough on its own if your skin is super dehydrated. It will make your skin go all shriveled if you don't add moisturizer and you were super dry to start with. Ask me how I know)
Basically this angel faced & clear skinned child absolutely did not need anything to help acne or redness, but in this case it's a harmless product that will also help her skin stay moisturized in winter. It's pricey for what it is, but it's not meant for mature skin only thankfully. Basically if I had to choose something from Glow Recipe (which has cute, colorful bottles and fun fruit themes) for a little kiddo, this lands in the harmless to their skin pile.
She got the mini size which is $20
Her skin absolutely doesn't need this product. This is about marketing performative femininity and anti-aging towards girls and women. From an "everyone has skin to care for," perspective, "watermelon pink juice moisturizer" by the same brand is more relevant. Or the blueberry cleanser.
(most of the actual teenagers said things like "excuse me" if they needed to pass by and weren't rude to me at all. Like actual teenagers sans guardians and I had lots of normal sorry, excuse me, go ahead interactions between us. They're NOT all aggressive and rude.)
Idk idk I have such mixed feelings. I know I cared about the onset of acne at 11, 12... I hated the feeling of breaking out, not even just from a social perspective but like, the sensory feeling it produces in your skin. I pick at it even when I shouldn't. I still hate it! But to have that anxiety compounded a bajillion times by social media would've sucked.

March favorites?
Tretinoin and a 2% BHA serum.
These 2 are a very powerful combo. I only use BHAs once a week, there are people who use it every single day and it is true that is a lot more gentle compared to other chemical exfoliators but I do not want to overexfoliate my skin or disrupt my skin barrier again like last year (when I would use the highest percentages of Vitamin C, AHA, Retinoids every day) so I make sure I only use it when I really need it. I use Tretinoin for anti-aging purposes only, it does not require a prescription where I live so I can get it at any pharmacy. 0.1% is the highest concentration available on the market and some people purge like crazy but I have been using it for on and off 4 years so my skin is used to it. My skin is far from perfect and sometimes I break out due to hormones, stress or lack of sleep and I need products to improve my skin texture. One of my favorite things is applying my 0.1% Tretinoin on Friday night and on Monday my skin begins flaking, I take my BHA Serum massaging it into my skin and it gets rid of all my dead skin cells and I love how my skin looks smooth and glowy the next days.
Garnier Hyaluronic Aloe Replumping Superserum.
I would never really purchase something from Garnier. However, my aunt was recently diagnosed with preoral dermatitis (it's terrible) and her dermatologist told her to stop using any makeup or skincare so she gave me most of her cosmetics that I have been trying out the past few weeks. This is one of my favorites. Whenever I use a hydrating ingredient I always spritz my face with water first to maximize its benefits and this serum makes my skin feel so much more hydrated and fresh, it has a very calming & pleasant smell, and I sometimes add another layer depending on my skin's needs. It gives me the perfect base before I move on to applying my skin makeup. What makes this serum amazing is that it includes so many different hydrating ingredients - Aloe, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin... My skin loves this superserum so I use this one quite often.
Missha A'pieu BB Maker SPF 30/PA++
This is another product that proves to me that Korean makeup products are amazing. The BB creams I've tried from Western brands have been lackluster at best, they never match my skin tone, they look off on me but I bought this in 212 Natural Beige and it is so perfect. It's called 'BB cream' but this product is so high coverage that I would almost call it a foundation. When my order first arrived, I was shocked at how small the product was, I thought I'm gonna finish it in two weeks tops but the thing is you put 1/2 a pea size on the back of your hand and realize you could easily cover your whole face with it. I don't know how that's possible but you really need soooo little, only a teeny tiny amount and it's something I still need to learn, I put a 3/4 pea just to be safe and it always turns out to be way too much. I know someone who works for Missha so I got this product at a heavy discount, I ordered 2 and she sent 4, what a darling and what an amazing excuse to buy more products!
Apple AirPods (3rd Generation).
These were a gift from my mom, my Huawei Freebuds stopped working and I've been complaining about it nonstop so she surprised me with a pair of Airpods 3, she was torn between the 2 and 3 so she gave me the receipt to let me decide. I went in the next day and got them exchanged, and I love them. I can do calls, binge my shows, participate in virtual meetings, listen to podcasts on my way to uni, listen to music for hours on end with no issues and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a pair of good headphones, the battery lasts a long time as well. The headphones may feel weird at the beginning, like they could fall out any second which is why I was hesitant in the beginning but I got used to it, it does not bother me anymore. I also got a cute little case, it's silver stoned and I am not really a bling person but I did not want to get silicone because they stain and rip, I wanted to try something different, so I just went ahead and bought this one, I love how it sparkles and it is pretty much impossible to damage.
A White Long Sleeved Leotard.
I am obsessed with this long sleeved leotard, it is a game changer and I think this is the best purchases I have made this year. It literally solves 90% of all my cloth-related problems. When I go to the dance studio, I throw this on with my black leggings as a base layer, I just have to take off my skirt and I am good to go within seconds. The material is stretchy but very fitted and I love how the fabric feels on my skin, I also how it looks on me and how it emphasizes my slim arms and my small waist. The fabric is very thin but it is not see through so I can wear my cropped wrap tops and all my see through tops over it without looking frumpy. I love a fitted look so I can wear it on its own with a pleated dark navy skirt or a black pencil skirt (my favorite) as well. It is a 10/10 and I have already purchased many more in various colors and this is the type of thing I never knew I needed.
Love, Cat.

Hand care – Moisturisers
What to look for in hand creams?
There are a million different hand creams on the market, and some independent companies even produce their own hand creams. So how are we going choose? We'll be looking at a few criteria, which, honestly just comes down to personal preferences:
Ingredients
Lasting greasiness
Scents
Packaging
After which we will then look at brands available in the UK, and brands I love (which may not be available in the UK).
1. Ingredients
Realistically, you probably won't be able to tell whether you'll like a hand cream until you've tried it. And if the store doesn't have testers, then you might just have to look up reviews online and trust them.
However, there are some ingredients which may be indicative of moisturising guarantee. (And speaking of ingredients, remember to always go paraben-free, especially if you have sensitive skin.) Here are a few most common ones:
Aloe vera has natural anti-inflammatory properties, which is why you've probably seen aloe vera used in healing gels like for sunburns. But did you know it's also a very hydrating and is full of Vitamin A, C and E? Therefore it often appears in face masks too.
Shea butter is packed with Vitamin A, E and F, and offers intense moisture for dry skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, so moisturisers with shea butter can also help with soothing minor skin irritations.
Hyaluronic acid, which is not actually an acid, exploded in skincare products in recent years. Don't ask me how it works but it holds up to 1000 its weight in water, like a sponge. It appears very often in face moisturisers and face masks.
Jojoba oil is good for more sensitive skins as it is easy to absorb, non-comedogenic (so it doesn't cause breakouts), and has rich antioxidant content (it fights off environmental damage).
Vitamin E helps prevent skin aging.
2. Lasting greasiness
Have you ever used a hand cream and then realise... you can't hold on to anything because your hands are so slippery, and now you're not sure whether to just sit there and wait until your hands absorb everything, or if you should wipe it off?
Some hand creams actually absorb better than others leaving less greasiness, and some are even advertised for "working hands"! I have no idea if that affects the effeciency of moisturising though. So if you find that the hand cream you use doesn't leave greasiness but isn't hydrating enough, then I guess you can use it more frequently, and save the greasy moisturisers for when you're off to bed.
According to my impression and looking at the ingredients we talked about above, shea butter would probably be on the higher side of the greasiness scale, whereas jojoba oil would be on the lower side.
3. Scents
I love a good lavender scent. A lot of scents in cosmetics can be mainly categorised as floral or fruity, with the latter normally sweeter.
However, some people may prefer them unscented, especially if you have sensitive skin, as parfums can often be the main cause of skin irritation.
4. Packaging
Most hand creams come in tubes, and personally I do like tubes more, it's just easier to squeeze out the amount you want. The tubes are prettier normally and are easy to carry. But most importantly, some tubes come in smaller sizes, which means you can try more scents!! 😉 Sometimes you may even find multiple small tubes in a gift box set too. 👀
And honestly, let's be real, it is very gender affirming to use a hand cream that not only feels good, smells good, but also looks good as well. :3 So with that in mind, let's look at...
Brands
Nivea is a brand on the more affordable side. This Soft Moisturising Cream is one I've used, it has jojoba oil and vitamin E. This moisturiser has a mild cotton-y scent, and kinda middle-ground in greasiness but absorbs quickly, I find I don't have to wait too long to start using my hands again.
The Body Shop has quite a few scents to choose from. I believe that most, if not all, hand creams at The Body Shop contains shea butter, so they can be on the more greasier side. However, it also means they are definitely on the more moisturising side. If you visit a brick and mortar store, you may even be able to try their testers, see if you like the scents and the feel on your hands.
L'Occitane is a French brand and definitely on the higher end price-wise. They also have a wide-range of hand creams to choose from, and I have tried it once as my mom uses it sometimes. It was kinda greasy, but the one I tried was not as greasy as those from The Body Shop. It does feel better and nicer than some other hand creams, but it is more expensive.
Burt's Bees is known for hydrating lip balms based on, well you guessed it, honey, and they seem to have started doing hand creams as well. There's not a wide-range and I haven't tried any so I don't know what it feels like or how it smells, but I think Burt's Bees is a trustworthy brand.
If you look in local UK drug stores, you'd find a ton more brands, I'm sure there are more out there that are good.
Before I go on to talk about the moisturisers I like, naturally I also asked my mom some of her favourites. :3
She used to be such a fan of Crabtree & Evelyn before they closed globally, because there were literally giftboxes of maaany scents and she'd get to try them all. Nowadays though, she said she likes Innisfree (KR) and Fiancée's (JP) hand creams.
And lastly, here are three moisturisers that I quite like that are not easily obtainable in the UK:
Sebamed's Hydrating Hand+Nail Balm used to be available in the UK, but it seems they have stopped stocking it. You might be able to find it in other parts of the globe though. This is a very practical hand cream, it's light, has a mild scent, and is low on the greasiness scale. It's very good for more sensitive skins, and is also good for your nails too.
Yuskin's Hana (JP) has a few scents to choose from, and is very low on the greasiness scale. But because of that, you need to put more each time to have full coverage on your hands. I like it because of its low on greasiness, but also the mild scents that sparks joy.
But nothing beats my absolute favourite hand cream, Furupuru's Hand and Nail Cream (JP). It's so light and the scent is absolutely wonderful, and its selling point is literally that you can use the touch screen on your phone after using it, which means it's very low on the greasiness scale. AND you get cute animals printed on the tube, what's not to like?
