Hello Claire! I was wondering if I could ask about a bit of one of your pieces. In the Mos Eisley Morning piece, there's a bit of writing on the right-hand side (above the astromech). May I ask what it says? Thanks!
it says "KARK JABA" or the equivalent of "FUCK JABBA" in Huttese—Disney made me take it out for the final, unfortunately. 😅

this is little more than a personal headcanon but i just find it so annoying when people equate anakins experience with language to that of a modern third culture kid. framing huttese as his native tongue, a part of his culture and personhood, with basic as an addition, something foreign that he had to learn to assimilate into the order/function in the galaxy, when really its the other way round! huttese is the language of his enslavers. basic is his mother-tongue, literally, its the language he uses with shmi. she has an accent so it might not have been her first language but afaik the story is she was kidnapped by pirates as a kid so even then her native language sure wasn’t huttese.
i think trying to map the experiences of someone from an ethnic or national minority moving into a more powerful nation as a kid in our world onto anakin is just bound to fail because the culture he’s being taken away from was not his in the first place. it’s a culture from which he was explicitly excluded, a place and system and language that denied his personhood.
it’s not the tragedy of someone struggling to hold onto their roots while a stronger culture threatens to sweep them away, it’s being denied any culture of his own. it’s the tragedy of a mother speaking to her son in the lingua franca of the universe because she knows her own tongue will not be useful to him in the life they live. if she even remembers it, if the memories of her free childhood aren’t too distant and too painful.
it’s someone who’s first language is the second language of the whole galaxy. whose second language is that of his enslavers. who then joins an organization that unifies its members as its own culture, but unlike other jedi, he wasn’t raised in that culture either. we see jedi like ahsoka or luminara maintain connections to their cultures of origin despite leaving them as babies, but what exactly does anakin have to anchor him? the culture of the place that subjugated him and killed his mother? or the culture of the jedi from which he will always be a little excluded because he doesn’t have the same experiences as those who grew up in the order
#like i get it im bilingual too was raised all over the place and projecting onto anakin is in my top ten favorite hobbies#but this comparison just doesn’t work. also i thought i was out of my overlong dramatic star wars meta era but apparently not#star wars meta#anakin skywalker#huttese#shmi skywalker#star wars#mine.

Anakin says "Mami" to goad you into speaking Spanish, but if you get a little too smug about him not knowing what you're saying, he gets all rough and starts speaking huttese because he's petty and defensive.
Maybe he shoves his dick in you and yells in your face to speak huttese until you muster up what little you've picked up from him.
"speak, are you stupid? You fucking dumb"
"Ani I ca—"
"Speak right or my fist is going in your mouth."
got your other msg saying this was donnie 💕
what do i even say other than holy fucking shit. this shit had my jaw drop to the floor im freaking out rn bcos oh my fucking g o d DONNIE DONnIE DONNIE DDODNDIE who is out here doing it like you
"ay, mami," smirking, knowing he's getting to you, grabbing onto your hips. "c'mon," a taunting drawl. and you get out of your own head about it, you let the words flow, and you can tell he's into it. all until you get too big for your britches (of course you do 🙄, he should've known). "you don't even know what i'm saying, do you?" you tease, all high and mighty. you can feel the change in his demeanor with how his grip digs into you. "what do you know, huh?" combating it with huttese out of his own insecurity. "i know shit too."
"really impress me. go on, show me what you've learned. or have you been slacking?" he asks in basic, only to switch to huttese. a vulgar attitude along with it, his upper lip snarling just like it usually does when he speaks it, "what do you got? let me hear it." his dick is fucking bullying your insides. shoving in and making room for itself. the sting of stretch not so bad because of how fucking wet you're getting from this. "yeah? you like when i call you stupid, whore?" his eyes widen with interest when he sees recognition pass over your face. "yeah, you know that word, don't you? say it. say 'schutta'."
threatening you he'll fist your mouth if you can't speak right.. fucking christ. im about to cum i swear this is so fucking hot. calling you stupid. "what have you been learning all these months? haven't been keeping up. ask me to teach you and you keep disappointing me. how many times are we gonna do this?" all because you spoke a little spanish to him and he happened to not know it.
kinda need him to shove his fist in your mouth tbh... fucking christ i cant stop thinking about "speak right or my fist is going in your mouth." holy fuck.

Wee Shahnit... Sleemo
STAR WARS EPISODE II: Attack of the Clones 00:24:28
The subtitles for this scene read "Wee Shahnit... Sleemo" but if you listen closely, she clearly says the Huttese word Murishani translating to "bounty hunter".
In Star Wars Chronicles: The Prequels by Pablo Hidalgo, he writes that Zam's last words are "murishani sleemo".
The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader by Ryder Windham, a young adult novel from 2007 which retells the events of the Star Wars saga from Anakin/Vader's viewpoint uses the words "Wee shahnit".
R.A. Salvatore's novelization of Attack of the Clones simply omits the line altogether, with "It was a bounty hunter called-" being Zam's last words.
Thanks to @darkblades75 for sharing the script page and also suggesting to check the Attack of the Clones comic adaptation from Dark Horse Comics. Much like the novelization, both the script and comic leave Zam's last words as "It was a bounty hunter called..."
I couldn't find any other sources, does anyone know anywhere else that describes this scene in either direction?

Imagine if writers peppered their Star Wars fics with Huttese the way people pepper it with Mando'a
Brought to you by the fact that I had to add a sentence in Huttese and it took way too long

(god i'll fucking regret this in the morning) Virgin Mando'a
basically a dead language
only spoken in one particular sector of the galaxy
spoken by rapidly-aging clones
Mandalorians themselves don't even speak it among each other
frankly overhyped
british influences (disgusting)
difficult to apply in sentences, you come off as a nerd
Chad Huttese
simply refuses to die
THE most widely spoken language in the galaxy second to basic
spoken by borderline immortal crime lords
Hutts don't even bother with basic, indulge in their glorious language freely; foreigners stumped
older than the Republic itself
no lesser earthly influences
can easily fit into sentences, perfect for swearing
#star wars#mandalorians#hutts#mando'a#huttese#this is satire#but oh my god how come we have entire glossaries in Mando'a meanwhile Huttese is still largely unknown#meme#star wars memes#please don't take fictional space languages so seriously

Your Mando’a guide to grammar is so helpful! ❤️ You wouldn’t happen to have a guide for anything with Huttese, would you? 🥺🙏😖 I be struggling with full sentences in my fic sometimes. Lol.
Thank you! Unfortunately, I have no advice for Huttese aside from what’s in Wookieepedia: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Huttese

I’ve written before that I headcanon that there are actually several Mandalorian languages. Today I had the thought that the same is probably true for Huttese to an even greater degree.
The Huttese civilization is even older than the Galactic Republic. So Huttese is probably an old language that has had time to develop all sorts of complexities that may seem rather alien to humans speaking Coruscanti-family languages. So let’s call the ancient variety spoken before the Hutt Cataclysms of 15,000 BBY Varl Huttese after the destroyed home world, and its modern descendant i.e. the variety of Huttese spoken by native Hutts in the modern day Nal Huttan Huttese.
Now this native Huttese has probably spawned dozens of different slave pidgins and creoles, rather like the European languages have done around the world. These creoles would have mostly Huttese vocabulary (with some percentage, sometimes a significant percentage, of words of other origin) and much simplified grammar.
The Huttese that’s spoken as Outer Rim lingua franca is probably a Huttese or Huttese-creole based trade language/pidgin and resembles the Huttese slave creoles much more closely than Nal Huttan Huttese.
(I like the “language family explanation” because a) it reflects reality, and b) it covers multiple sins if you can’t logically retcon everything.)
