One of the broadbills has fledged, and now there is just one nestling. For some reason the mother was very skittish this morning, so I left quickly, but she has been luring the remaining chick onto the rim of the nest so it can exercise its wings. Everything they do they do quickly, so I may not be able to photograph the baby's first flight. I don't know if there will be another brood this year, but I hope mom recalls the location and nests here agin.

Anna’s hummingbird - Calypte anna by Janis Morrison Via Flickr: Male and female Anna's Hummingbirds are together only long enough to mate, they do not form a lasting bond. The female alone will build the cup shaped nest made of plant fibres, spider webs, feathers with a lichen exterior for camouflage. It is made of these soft materials so that as the chicks grow, the nest expands with them. This nest is about the size of an apricot, not easy to spot. There are typically 1 or 2 eggs per nest about the size and shape of a small jellybean. The eggs are normally laid on different days. The female will incubate the eggs for 14-19 days. When the little hummers hatch they weigh only 0.62 gm (0.02 oz) and are just 2.54 cm (1 in) long. She will then feed and nurture the chicks herself until they become independent at 18-23 days. She feeds her young by eating bugs and nectar and then regurgitates the food into the chick’s mouths. This is what she is doing in this image.

Baby Hummingbird
Baby birds in general always look to me like they're basically a little machine - you put food in one end and the body gradually inflates into being an aircraft.

Some of my favorite native flowers!! (all photos are CC0)
Padre's shooting star. (Primula clevelandii) Lots to love about these little things. They're basically the first wildflower we get each year, a herald of spring, so when I see them popping up I know that warmer weather is on the way.
Purple owl's-clover (Castilleja exserta). It's a hemiparasite that gets some of its nutrients from surrounding plants. I also gain health in the presence of lupines, so we are basically the same entity.
Speaking of lupines, the most common one in my specific area is the chick lupine (Lupinus microcarpus). I love watching it go through its life cycle every year, from the first cotyledons (which are smooth discs, see the second photo) to its chunky little beans.
I could go on basically forever if given the chance so I'm gonna cap this off with alkali heliotrope (Heliotropium curassavicum). The way the flowers grow along the curved stem just captivates me, and the mix of yellow and purple inside the flowers (due to age perhaps?) is so so pleasing.
What's everyone's favourite flowers that aren't like. The normal ones. Like everyone's a fan of roses and sunflowers what's a more niche one. One you don't get in gift sets. Mine's sweet peas

The Palestine Sunbird Persists
The Palestine sunbird, also known as the orange-tufted sunbird (Cinnyris osea) is the national bird of Palestine, and often seen as a symbol of resistance and hope. This species occurs in dry climates, particularly desert, scrubland, and savannahs, but can also be found in orchards and gardens where flowers are abundant. In addition to the Levant, C. osea occurs throughout the southwest cost of Saudia Arabia and the coasts of Yemen and Oman in the south.
C. osea is a small bird, 8 to 12 cm (3.1-4.7 in) long with a wingspan of only 14 to 16 cm (5.5-6.2 in). Males weigh on average 7.6 g (0.26 oz) and females are slightly smaller, at about 6.8 g (0.24 oz). Males are quite easy to identify due to their striking plumage; their feathers are iridescent, appearing dark until they shimmer glossy blue or green, with orange tufts at the side of the breast. In contrast females are fairly drab; grey-brown with a lighter underside. The beaks of the Palestine sunbird are also noted for their distinctively long and curved, which they have developed to efficiently feed on nectar.
Although not directly part of the hummingbird family, the Palestine sunbird shares many similarities with the group. Its diet consists of nectar, and is supplemented with insects. Their tongues are long, and brush-like, and the shape of their beak allows them to reach down to the base of the flower. For flowers that are , they will use their sharp beaks to pierce the side and access the nectar directly. All this is done at very high speeds, but unlike hummingbirds the Palestine sunbird cannot hover in place, and must land in order to feed. Because of their primary reliance on nectar, the orange-tufted sunbird is an important pollinator in its native region. Adults are rarely predated upon, but eggs and young are often targets for lizards, snakes, and birds of prey.
Reproduction begins in June, and continues through October. Males establish and defend territories, and court females by singing to attract a potential mate, then chasing her until she perches to signal her acceptance. Following the pairing, the two construct a purse-like nest, sometimes with a porch-like structure, that hangs from a branch. In this nest, 1-2 eggs are laid, and are incubated primarily by the female, while the male provides her food. The eggs take 13 to 14 days to hatch, and chicks are taken care of by both parents for an additional 14 to 21 days. Individuals can live up to 5 years in the wild.
Conservation status: The Palestine sunbird has a large range and population, and is thus considered Least Concern by the IUCN. Its primary threat is habitat loss due to agriculture and urban development.
If you send me proof that you’ve made a donation to UNRWA or another organization benefiting Palestinians, I’ll make art of any animal of your choosing.
Remember, the donation can be in any amount– every dollar counts!

Prompt 31
DC Wing Au/Prompt
Humans are born with wings that start out similar to a baby chick’s in shape, and usually start out matching their natural hair color. These wings of course change and grow as they do, and usually end up mimicking birds from earth once they’re adults. The end shape can be influenced by a multiple of things, including their surroundings, genetics, and even the people they surround themselves with.
Some non-humans even have themselves wings too- like Wonder Woman’s wings seemingly made of shimmering bronze and gold, or Aquaman’s wings that shimmer and flicker like the waves he commands. Or Superman with wings large enough to block out the sun glowing like the sunrise, or the Batman’s shimmering shadows that seem to twist and bristle.
Of course these are quite different than say the wings of Diana Prince, with her eagle-like wings decorated with strings of beads or that reporter Clark Kent’s hawk-esque wings, which are large sure, but that’s not exactly uncommon for someone who grew up in the countryside where there’s open sky everywhere.
Quite different from someone like Bruce Wayne, with wings akin to a black swan, or his sons’ equally dark feathers, formed from the same gothic city. And quite different from the the forensic scientist Barry Allen’s hummingbird-esque wings, which is quite ironic seeing as he’s known for being late more often than not.
Bonus DP crossover:
Danny started with what looked like they were going to be large songbird wings like his father. After the accident though? They regrew into the form of a sparrow’s, shimmering with stars and the swirls of the very portal that tore the flesh and feathers from bone.
"Some ancient traditions state that sparrows carry the souls of the dead, so it is deemed to be bad luck to kill a sparrow... Some sources say that sailors would get tattoos of sparrows so they could carry their souls if they died in the middle of the ocean"

June 5, 2024 - Rufous-breasted Sabrewing (Campylopterus hyperythrus) Found in parts of eastern Venezuela and nearby Brazil and Guyana, these hummingbirds live in mountain forests and shrublands. They mostly eat nectar, sometimes gathering at flowering trees, and probably also eat small arthropods, though the details of their diet are unknown. Their breeding behavior has not been described, but females likely build cup-shaped nests and care for the chicks alone.

See how we've grown!
I've been away for just a week, and I'm astonished at how much the neighborhood hummingbird chicks have developed in that short time. They are beginning to show flecks of green in their plumage, and tail and wing feathers are growing strong. I will be watching them tomorrow with a proper camera during feeding time. It will be mere days before they fledge.

Painful Silence | The Originals x Mute!Child!reader
CW: Canon-typical violence, implied/referenced abuse of a child
Summary: Takes place after the events of "Not A Peep". A bit of backstory of Mute!reader from an unexpected source.
She had never been a vocal child.
Her Papa had voiced his concerns about that when Mama was still alive. Mama had merely smiled gently down at her three year old, quietly playing with a hummingbird figurine set.
"Nothing wrong with a little silence," Mama softly told her Papa, running a loving hand over her daughter's hair. "Her silence allows her to perceive the world so much more. She's an observant child. She listens, rather than just hears. And that is a precious gift for a bloodline like mine."
Her Papa still had his reservations, but he trusted his wife. Magic and witchcraft still confounded him but his lover's carefree attitude eased his worries for his daughter's lack of vocalization.
As the days went by, her Papa had felt more and more at ease, having heard several peels of laughter and grunts of frustration erupt from his daughter at times when he was at home. It was only a matter of time before she would begin to speak, he'd told himself.
Their household had been a happy one.
Until it wasn't.
It happened in the middle of the night. Papa had was at his usual night shift at work, with only her and Mama at home.
She had been woken from a rather lovely dream of talking pelicans and flying penguins.
Angry voices coming from the living room downstairs had her creeping slowly off her bed, making sure to grab her pastel green throw blanket with baby chicks printed in patterns, and tiptoed over to the second floor landing to find out what was going on.
When she peeked in between the banister, she could see her Mama with two other women in the living room.
"The laws of the coven no longer apply to me, sister. I renounced my position when I did." Mama said calmly.
One of the women, who had a very similar resemblance to her Mama, stepped forward, voice forceful, "The child is of our bloodline, tainted, though it may be, but ours nonetheless. She must be with her people."
Mama took a step forward, her face hardened, eyes alight with fury, "You will not touch a hair on her head. I left because I no longer believed in the covens ideals and practices. What makes you think I'd let you take my daughter to the very thing I cut ties from?"
The third woman, aged beyond the years of her Mama and the other woman, spoke, "The elders will not allow one of our kin to grow outside of the coven. She must come with us."
Her Mama looked at the older woman pleadingly, eyes stinging with unshed tears, "Mother, please, please, you can't take her from me. She is everything to me."
The old woman, the child's grandmother, held herself with poise and looked down her nose toward her pleading daughter, "I am sorry, child."
Her Mama's sorrowful face quickly morphed into rage and before the young girl could blink, her mother had let out a vicious cry, lifting her hand toward the woman that looked like her, Mama's sister.
The child felt the hairs on her body raise from the electricity in the air. The air seemed to vibrate and the girl stared in wonder as she saw lines of color and light dance around her mother.
An audible, sickening crack broke the girl out of her awestruck wonder and she gazed down at the still figure of her mother's sister, her auntie, on the floor. Her neck was at an odd angle, eyes open in shock, glazed over, seeing nothing.
"What have you done!" Came the shrill cry of her grandmother.
A rumble coursed through the foundation of the home in response.
Her Mama yelled back, "Leave! You are not welcome in this home!"
Her squeak of shock was her undoing. Both her mother and grandmother looked toward the banister and spotted the shaking form of the child.
Her mother's eyes went wide with fear, "My little Bluebird, please, go back to—MOTHER NO!"
The young girl felt the magic before she saw it. Flames erupted to the girl's left, barring escape from the stairs. The child squealed in terror as the fire nipped at her feet. It got close enough that her blanket, trailing limply at her feet, caught fire. The girl quickly let go of the cloth.
"Sweetheart, run!"
She obeyed her mother and stumbled shakily away from the growing flames. She didn't dare to look back, but she could hear the cries and yells coming from both her mother and grandmother in the living room, could feel the magic like static shocks to her skin.
She took refuge in her room, grabbed the penguin stuffy that she had and hid herself under her covers.
Blasts and yells could still be heard. Her room was getting hotter and hotter. A chocked sob erupted from her throat, and the only word that spilled from her lips was, "MAMA!"
The only thing she could hear was herself, her guttural screams for her mother, her pulsing heartbeat in her ears, her ragged coughs as she inhaled smoke.
The door to her room burst open after a few moments. The blankets were ripped from her, and she was brought into the familiar and warm embrace of her Mama.
"You're going to be alright, little Bluebird. Mama's here. She will always be here."
The child, exhausted from fear and panic, fainted in her mother's hold.
Her mother didn't have the sufficient power to calm the inferno raging in her home. Only enough to block it from spreading into the child's bedroom for now.
There was not much she could do. Her own mother and sister lay dead in the living room and she herself would not survive this night. The hex her mother placed on her before her death would complete its task within a few hours.
She looked down at her daughter's sleeping form. Tears welled in her eyes knowing this would be the last time she would see her. Her trembling lips gently kissed her forehead, "I love you, my little Bluebird. Mama loves you."
With the last reserve of power she held, she cast a protective spell over her little girl. Although her mother and sister were dead, the coven would not rest until they had her kid. The spell would deter any unwelcome eyes, keeping her girl safe for a few years at least.
As she lay at the foot of her daughter's bed, clutching the girl safely within her embrace, her last thoughts were of her baby and her husband. She hoped he would not resent her for this mess. He knew her coven was coming for their child. He never liked the whole witch aspect of her life and she could only pray that his hatred of it would not consume him after this.
Her gaze flitted down to her little Bluebird. Hearing her child cry out for her had filled her with so much joy and so much anguish. She had no idea how this night would affect her. She could only hope that her father would help her recover. As she closed her eyes for the last time, she could only hope.
Let my little one find happiness in this life.
***
The three Original's stared down at the child in the woman's lap.
The child's mother stroked her hair soothingly. The girl snuggled further into her mother's touch, a smile forming at the nostalgic ministrations.
Klaus turned his wary eyes to the woman.
Her presence in their home had been unexpected. He had found out that the Veil, which acted as a barrier between the physical world and the Other Side, had been brought down due to the goings-on in Mystic Falls. Because of this, supernatural entities that had previously died, could now interact with the physical realm.
The Mikaelson siblings had been skeptical of the woman's identity when she had appeared before them. All doubt about who she was had been dashed the moment their little Bird had caught sight of the mystery woman.
It had been a shock to the three ancient vampires when the girl, whom hadn't uttered a single sound since meeting, had let out a wail so primal, so heartachingly hurt. The three siblings could still hear the haunting cries in their ears.
The woman had scooped the little girl in her arms, rocking her soothingly and muttering sweet words into her ear, "I'm here my little Bluebird. Mama's here. You've been so strong, sweetheart."
Klaus was loathe to admit that he felt a pang of envy roll over him, seeing his Little Wing being soothed by another, but he had to reign in his ire, reminding himself that it was her mother and that ripping the two apart right now would not go over well. With his Little Wing, nor with his siblings.
"Thank you." The woman's voice broke through the Mikaelson's thoughts.
Each of their questioning looks at her gratitude caused her to smile as she explained, "For looking out for her." Her eyes strayed back to her daughter, "You have no idea how agonizing it was to see the aftermath of my death. To see her detach from what happened, see that she blamed herself for it, and even seeing my husband hurt her the way he did."
Her eyes shot back up to them, brimming with tears. "Thank you," she said again.
Rebekah huffed, irritated, "Your husband was a worthless, wretched wanker. Good riddance, I say. How could you even stand to stay with him?"
"I make no excuses for how he treated our daughter after my death, but he was never that way when I was alive. He worried for our little Bluebird. He knew about my being a witch and he knew that my coven would be coming for her." She gestured to the sleeping girl. "I truly loved him, but what he did...the neglect he subjected her to was..." She stared off into the distance her eyes glazed before she turned them to Klaus and Rebekah, silent fury burning bright in her gaze, "I do not condemn what you did to him. My only regret is that I could not partake in his judgment."
Her admittance eased Elijah's mind. He was pleased to know that their Baby Bird's mother had the proper motherly instinct to eliminate any threat or harm to their child, regardless of who the cause of it was.
Klaus grunted and crossed his arms, ire still simmering within his chest, "Your blessings regarding that brute's death aside, what else did you hope to accomplish with your limited time?"
Elijah rolled his eyes at his brother's rude attitude. He understood his irritation, he could see the jealousy festering in him, and he would be lying if he said that he didn't feel similar himself. The three of them had come to care for the child. At this point, she was a Mikaelson in all but blood.
Rebekah tsked at her brothers tone, "Honestly, Nik."
The witch, however, seemed to find the hybrids tone amusing as she chuckled softly, a knowing smile spreading on her lips, "Niklaus Mikaelson. I thank you for your concern for her, but there is nothing more that I want than to spend what little time I have left holding my daughter."
The hybrid narrowed his eyes at her, cold gaze studying her carefully, "I find that quite hard to believe. Any sane parent would fight tooth and nail to drag their child away from a monster like me."
The witch regarded him warmly, "Hm. It seems I have yet to witness this monster you speak of. The man I have seen with my daughter has been nothing but gentle and sweet; aquiescing to her needs when the situation called for it."
She turned her gaze to Elijah, "She has been under the protection of the one they call the Noble Brother. Who has treated her with equal care as you, Niklaus."
She finally turned to Rebekah, "Besides, this beautiful spitfire that is your sister has shown that she has the instincts of a mother bear when it comes to the protection of my child."
Her eyes went right back to Klaus, "Tell me. Why would I take her from a family that has prioritized her happiness and safety?"
The three Originals said nothing.
There was no sense in denying her observations, it was clear that she had been there for all their interactions with her child, invisible to the from her place on the Other Side.
The mother said nothing further, merely continuing the soft caresses on her little Bird's hair.

Spectember 2024 Day 27: Goliath Macaw
With a head-to-body length of 145-150 cm, a weight of 5 kg, and a wingspan of over 3.2 meters, the highly-social Goliath Macaw is the largest species of the Potworian parrot genus Neoara and one of the largest flying birds ever to inhabit Potworia's far southwestern continent of Svarogia. It lives in dense tropical rainforests where it uses its powerful, hooked beak and talons to feed upon the fruits, nuts, flowers, seeds and nectar produced by gigantic relatives of fabacae and other flowering plants and trees, and it will also fly after riverbanks in large flocks to consume clay or other mineral nutrients that aid the macaw in digesting potentially poisonous plants. The Goliath Macaw shares its habitat with other kinds of endemic Svarogian birds such as hummingbird-like passerines, hornbill-like toucans, omnivorous woodpeckers, and a several smaller species of parrot or macaw. Like most other macaws of the genus Neoara, The females of these monogamous birds lay two or three eggs inside the hole of a tree shortly before the breeding season ends. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs for 35 days, and the rat-sized chicks will soon fledge from the nest in about 100 days from the time they hatch.

Twisted Monsterland: Sleepy Birds
So…let’s talk harpies.
Without going into details about the overall species (I’ll save that for the baby monster bestiary I’m working on), I will say that harpies can be based on all species of birds. Falcons, eagles, and vultures? Sure, they’re more commonly known as the base foundation for the species, but they’re not the only ones! Crowley is a good example as a corvid harpy, and some of Rook’s siblings are based on birds of paradise like parrots and macaws! Some can even be based on delicate birds like the hummingbird~
Oof…just thinking about having to flap my arms that fast as a harpy makes me tired! 0.0
Now, you’re probably wondering, “That’s neat! But…where are you going with this?” And that’s a good question! Because we’re gonna talk about birbs~!
I’ve never owned a bird as a pet before, but my grandparents had one when we used to visit in my childhood. One thing I learned about birds (aside from the fact that we had to clap whenever their bird performed a trick on her own and someone saw it) is that one common thing bird owners do to calm down their feathery companions:
The “sleepy-time blanket”!
When the blanket goes over the cage, it’s supposed to mimic night time so the bird thinks it’s time to sleep. And when the cover is removed? It’s time to sing good morning~! Granted, it seems like this varies from bird-to-bird, but considering how often I’ve struggled to stay awake in school whenever the teachers used powerpoint slides in a dark room? Yeah, I get very sleepy in those cases. 😅
Now…imagine if Yuu discovered this by complete accident in the Monster!AU. >v>
////
Yuu: *hanging laundry out to dry on a bright, sunny day* “Hey, Grim? I need another clothes peg. The middle is sagging too much.”
Grim: “Yeah, yeah, here.” *flaps wings to hover next to Yuu, holding a bag in his paws* “Are we done yet? I’m bored…”
Yuu: “We’d be done sooner if someone hadn’t taken one of the bedsheets while the ghosts were collecting laundry and added one more load to wash and dry.” *unaware of a large shadow on the other side of the sheet, Yuu frowning as they go to take the sheet down and redo the arrangement*
???: “Bonjour, little Trickster~!”
Yuu/Grim: “Ack-!?!”
Crash!! Fwomp!
Grim: *pinned under Yuu* “Get…off! You’re heavy!”
Yuu: “Ow…sorry!” *climbs to their feet with a wince before turning to face the visitor now covered under the sheet* “Rook! You scared us half-to-death!”
*Rook doesn’t move, eerily silent as he stands there*
Grim: “Hm? Hey, wazza matter? You usually start talkin’ funny by now!” *huffs when he doesn’t get a response and goes to peek under the sheet* “Hey! Are you listenin’ to m…eh? Wait a minute…he’s asleep!?"
Yuu: “Huh??”
Grim: “He fell asleep standing! See?!” *yanks off blanket, pulling off Rook’s hat at the same time*
Rook: *straightens up with a blink, fluttering his wings before feathers settle down and he smiles* “Oh, there you are, Trickster. How are you faring this morning?”
Grim: “Mrah!? I thought you were asleep! What gives?”
Rook: “Hm? I was asleep? I don’t recall…”
Grim: “Yes you were! You were practically snorin’!”
Yuu: *picks up the sheet again, looking between it and Rook before slowly climbing back on the stepladder near Rook*
Rook: “Non, non, I promise you that I did not fall aslee-”
Yuu: *throws sheet over Rook’s head again*
Rook: “Mon di-!?” *freezes before slumping, standing in place in silence again*
Yuu: “…holy crap…I wonder if this’ll work on Ace or Cater?”
Grim: “What’s going on?!”
////
Needless to say, Rook was thoroughly confused by this until Yuu told him what happened. This also leads to a discussion on harpy parents using their wings to settle down rowdy chicks and restless hatchlings. Suffice to say, Yuu decided to run their own experiment on their fellow winged students. The results were…interesting to say the least.
Ace: Froze in place but was wide awake.
Cater: Fell asleep but collapsed on his side.
Leona: Blanket was torn to shreds from manticore quills. Hiding out in Diasomnia until he cools down.
Kalim: Normal blanket activates the zoomies. Introduced weighted blanket. Instant calm and Jamil is left baffled and grateful at the same time by this discovery!
Crowley: Fell asleep instantly. Sheets have been weaponized by the staff on occasion, so now he flies away at the sight of anyone carrying one towards him.
Seeing these results makes Yuu question what other animal reactions the students can possibly have. Meanwhile, their fellow students are warily watching the human scribble down notes in a notepad while carrying a jar of peanut butter.
Jack: “…why do you need me to be in beast form?”
Yuu: “I wanted to see something.”
Jack: “Okay…but what’s with the peanut butter?”
Yuu: “This? It’s just a tasty snack.” *opens it and scoops out a large spoonful* “See? Just regular peanut butter.”
Jack: “…alright.” *shifts into Fu dog form, nearly eye-to-eye with Yuu now* “Okay. What did you want to se—mfph!?!” *scrambles back after Yuu shoves the spoonful of peanut butter in his mouth, licking and trying to chew at the same time* “Blamph! Namf-nif-thaths?!”
Yuu: *scribbling notes* “Fu dogs react to peanut butter like dogs. Fascinating…I wonder if catnip affects manticore too?”
Ruggie: “Do you have some sort of death wish???”

Doing a massive overhaul of my Voice designs, decided on not only the color theming (not changing the colors at all Cold will forever be purple to me) bur also each being a different bird species. I figured I might as well log it down here to not only keep a list for later but also receiving constructive criticism.
Hero: Crow, same as the player himself.
Paranoid: barn owl. Hyperaware of everything around him, especially sounds or visuals. Hunted also has this but Instinct Den forever changed how I see him. Also barn owl calls sound like screaming.
Cold: albatross. "Albatross over your shoulder" referring to numbness in this case (as far as I know that phrase just means something is weighing on you).
Contrarian: hummingbird. Hummingbirds have to be calculated to make sure they don't run out of energy, and that is exactly the opposite of Contrarian. But he still has that energy.
Cheated: cuckoo. Irony. He got cheated out of something (usually slaying The Princess), like how a cuckoo cheats another species of bird out of raising their own chicks.
Opportunist: lapwing. A group of lapwings is called a deceit, plus I decided to switch to him having the wing spur instead (he'd use it to win a fight in an unfair way once he gets an opportunity).
Hunted: loggerhead shrike. They're songbird that would normally be prey, but there's a reason this bird is called the butcherbird.
Smitten: lovebird. What else?
Skeptic: macaw. They're smart and I'm trying to avoid putting another corvid in so Hero is the only one.
Stubborn: eagle. He gives me the vibe of a bald eagle that will interlock talons with whoever he views as a rival (or lover, take this how you will) and plummet towards the ground at full speed.
Broken: dove. Pigeons and doves are closely related and doves works better with the theme of worship (often used as symbols in various religions).
