"For the first time, genetically modified pig kidneys provided “life-sustaining kidney function” during the course of a planned seven-day clinical study—a first step in addressing the critical crisis worldwide of kidney donor organ shortage.
The University of Alabama’s pre-clinical human study at Birmingham also advances the science and promise of xenotransplantation as a therapy to potentially cure end-stage kidney disease—just as a human-to-human transplants can.
“It has been truly extraordinary to see the first-ever preclinical demonstration that appropriately modified pig kidneys can provide normal, life-sustaining kidney function in a human safely and be achieved using a standard immunosuppression regimen,” said UAB transplant surgeon scientist Jayme Locke, M.D., director of UAB’s Comprehensive Transplant Institute and lead author of the paper...
The peer-reviewed findings published last month in JAMA Surgery describes the pioneering pre-clinical human research performed on a recipient experiencing brain death...
The pre-clinical human brain death model developed at UAB can evaluate the safety and feasibility of pig-to-human kidney xenografts, or transplants, without risk to a living human. It is named for transplant pioneer Jim Parsons, an organ donor whose family generously donated his body to advance xenotransplant kidney research, like the latest patient did.
A Critical Need
Kidney disease kills more people each year than breast or prostate cancer, while more than 90,000 people are on the transplant waiting list. More than 800,000 Americans are living with kidney failure and 240 Americans on dialysis die every day. The wait for a deceased donor kidney can be as long as five to 10 years, and almost 5,000 people per year die waiting for a kidney transplant.
Groundbreaking Study Details
The 52-year-old study subject for this research lived with hypertension and stage 2 chronic kidney disease, which affects more than one in seven U.S. adults, or an estimated 37 million Americans. As part of this study, the subject had both of his native kidneys removed and dialysis stopped, followed by a crossmatch-compatible xenotransplant with two 10 gene-edited pig kidneys, or UKidney.
The transplanted pig kidneys made urine within four minutes of re-perfusion and produced more than 37 liters of urine in the first 24 hours. The pig kidneys continued to function as they would in a living human for the entirety of the seven-day study. Also, the kidneys were still viable at the time the study was concluded.
“In the first 24 hours these kidneys made over 37 liters of urine,” said Dr. Locke. “It was really a remarkable thing to see.” ...
Gene editing in pigs to reduce immune rejection has made organ transplants from pigs to humans possible. The natural lifespan of a pig is 30 years, they are easily bred, and they have organs of similar size to humans. Genetically modified pig kidneys have been extensively tested in non-human primates, and the addition of UAB’s preclinical human research model—the Parsons Model—now provides important information about the safety and efficacy of kidneys in human transplant recipients."

ur making me wanna ship kyman (only if cartman gets therapy) what the actual fuck is Tumblr doing to me
Nice to tempt you to the dark side 👻
lolol in all seriousness, that’s cool! Technically, Cartman *is* in therapy. He’s seeing Thomas (Panderverse), remember? And it’s strongly implied he’s on medication (Cupid Ye). Can’t say if he’s getting better or worse, but Cartman definitely has evolved. If you want to go the redemption route, it’s been shown that it takes little for Cartman to be “fixed”. He just needs discipline, a sturdy male figure in his life. He… needs to be dominated. Literally (tsst) and if not that, he needs to get out of South Park— his biggest enabler. So, he’s not too far gone. He’s a real piece of work though, and South Park’s wellbeing (in-show and out) can’t function without him being an asshole. It’s just who he is. But whoever decides to stick with him has to have a lot of determination to deal some damage control, or keep him in check. (hm, sounds familiar…)
So, there’s your condition met. Go forth and ship kyman! 🫡
#asks#talk tag#kyman#south park#eric cartman#kyle broflovski#analysis#I think wether or not they’re shipped these boys are still gonna be obsessed with each other in some capacity#kyle will always have a weakness for seeing the humanity in cartman. and even weaker in seeing him vulnerable#and cartman always had a fixation on kyle. To a…Cartmanistic degree#they’ve been arguing since day one on the show#their dynamic literally saved kyle#kyle’s been saved by cartman in-world too (san fran + kidney) not always to their enjoyment#they’re just. bound to each other y’know??#like. even in another universe they have a close connection. destined for each other in some way (end of panderverse)#They give each other a lot of shit. a lot of it from cartman’s end. And yet. fucking yet. they’re good friends#they rly carved out a space for each other despite themselves. I think it’s to deep for them to get out of.#also I think it’s funny. It’s just so South Park to have kyman as a couple of all things. it’s hilarious and fucked up. yet can be sincere#and touching. It’s just. idk. These two are south park y’know??#mm. maybe that’s me making it bigger. But they are important

the Thing i Like most about ronin Is That despite obviously being a Deeply Immoral person he Has a redemptive Side To him. it would have Been Easy for the writer to Write Him as Just a 2d edgelord-Bait character but instead He Does actually have like depth to Him and a sympathetic Reason Why he is the Way He is.

tbh I'm never going to stop being mad about the Manx syndrome that makes Manx cats manxes. It's an easily, Visually identifiable trait that causes the afflicted animal life long discomfort and mobility issues so severe many need specialized care and equipment to give them a normal life. And that isnt even taking into account how many die as kittens or who need to be put down because they'll never have the minimum quality of life needed to subject them to their difficulties.
there's 2 genes that can cause shortened tails/no tail in cats and while it's debatable how ethical the other one is, due to how important tails are for cat communication, the bobtail Gene is at least not devastating to the animals welfare. Unlike Manx syndrome it just causes the kittens to be born with fewer tail vertebrae. All the other vertebrae are unaffected.
Manx syndrome, in the more severe cases, which to be clear are the breed standard and are considered Desirable, cause the back half of the spine to fail to form correctly. This causes the cats to "hop like bunnies" bc their hind legs are partially paralyzed. they have severe nerve issues bc their spinal cord isn't fully encased in bone like it should be. The paralysis effects their guts too, making many of them incontinent or unable to relieve themselves properly. which leads to chronic UTIs and them needing frequent baths. which, they are cats, they do not like baths.
The main defense of the continued intentional breeding of manxes is that it is a naturally occurring mutation, as in its a landrace breed that initially happened on its own in the feral cat population on the island of mann. "if they were able to survive and reproduce under those conditions then surely it's ok" type of argument. A dominant trait spreading through a feral cat population on a small island that has no predators and plenty of small animal prey to eat, is not a defense. it's the law of large numbers.
#Prime was intentionally bred by a breeder who wanted to get rich selling manx cats nc they saw how expensive the kittens were#the kittens are so expensive bc many litters end up like Primes. with 3/5 kittens needing to be put down within weeks or days of being born#Of the two kittens who made it to 6months only Prime was ever deened adoptable. her brother had to stay at the manx specific shelter#and he only made it to a little over a year before he started suffering from kidney failure bc of the constant UTIs#he had perfect. Specialized care and as much resources and attention as he needed and he still didn't get to live his life#Prime's better off obviously but i still have to spend a lot of time on her care and she doesn't get to be a cat in the same#way as her sisters#ie my other two cats who are just random bred shorthairs#cw animal cruelty#most of the sources about manx syndrome are in reference to it occuring randomly in livestock or humans#bc like#it is something that does just happen without any intentional breeding for the trait unfortunately#cats just handle it a lot better for their own reasons#' spina bifida' is the technical term but its called manx syndrome in other animals too

Falin panel in my style
:D I suddenly felt compelled to redraw the panel. Miss Touden you are my muse
Lineart + original panel under the cut
I mean, look at the improvement from one drawing to the other, Ryoko Kui’s art makes me think hard about anatomy + physics and it feels really good to draw :3
\/ original panel!
#I <3 Faligon#This was actually so much fun but it had me searching up weird stuff like ‘human vital points’ and ‘how to draw realistic boobs’#I still have the child safety thing on my iPad so it was hard to find 😭#Had a lot of fun with the ripping fabric! It felt very instinctual and kinda just like scribbling#A lot of people who have been reblogging my stuff lately have been copying all of my tags. Like not just the general/organisation ones#So can you stop doing that :) thank you :)#It’s when someone reblogged it copying me talking about my crush? Or something personal? It’s really odd to copy them 1 for 1…#Falin Touden#My art#Dunmeshi#Dunmeshi fanart#Dungeon Meshi#Dungeon meshi spoilers#Dungeon Meshi fanart#Falin#Farlyn Thorden#Falin fanart#Blood#cw blood#I drew more stab points then are in the panel because Kabru stabs her 3 times (not counting the neck) in the lungs kidney and heart#But only 2 of those are visible in the panel? The lung puncture is missing so I decided to add it#gore#I mean it’s fairly mild#I cannot draw wings for the life of me thank you Ryoko Kui for helping lol#Faligon

Question: why can't Broadway musicals tape their performance and put it up on a platform for rental while the shows still on Broadway?
Obviously you charge a fair price for the rental, make it like 48 hours and cost maybe whatever their general admission ticket costs. Then, after the musical comes off Broadway, you make that original cast recording avaliable to buy permanently (like including downloads) for that general admission ticket price and knock down the rental price.
Now you'd have to either come up with a streaming service or license it out to one which is not ideal, but it would vastly improve the availability of musical theater especially to people who live outside of New England or people who don't have thousands of dollars to drop just to go see a musical. Not to mention it could help make newer musicals more accessible and easily spread, and don't get me started on accessibility especially when it comes to physical disabilities that would disallow travel or actually seeing a musical in person. This would also allow people to see the musical and then maybe go watch it in person, which increases revenue.
It also allows a continuous revenue stream for the creative team and possibly actors (depending on how contracts are structured), particularly in cases of musicals with specific historical or literary settings that could be used in classrooms (think Hamilton, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, the upcoming The Outsiders, or like every Shakespear play ever). Or even if a musical is really popular and gets a cult following like 30 years later, it would be available in a watchable format and not just as a soundtrack. Plus it'd get rid of people going to musicals for the sole purpose of uploading a slime tutorial.
#broadway#musical theatre#broadway musicals#i say this because I wanna see the new outsiders musical and can't afford too#like it would be probably 2K conservatively to do a full trip#if I just went for the show and maybe an overnight it'd be like 1200#which is 1200 I don't have#the outsiders#the outsiders a new musical#ponyboy curtis#darry curtis#sodapop curtis#two bit mathews#dally winston#johnny cake#johnny cade#steve randle#alexander hamilton#hamilton musical#west side story#fiddler on the roof#idk I feel like this could work#but theater people are either the nicest humans#or the most pretentious#and I feel like a lot of broadway people can be pretensious#like i live not within driving distance of NY it's a literal kidney for me to see a broadway show#it's money I will Probably never have#a lot of people will never have#so just let us have this#Hamiton and Newsies have stage recordings that are both wildly popular

i saw that post about roy smoking pot and i raise you the headcanon i have that ed uses weed as a way to self-medicate with the chronic pain brought on by his automail ^^ and also recreationally because he's a little punk and thinks its fun as well as helpful
Ed's stunned for like 0.2 seconds upon finding out that Roy is also low key a pot head, until rapidly getting excited to finally have someone to get high with haha
The alchemic theories these two would come up with while stoned together though lmao
#fullmetal alchemist#Roy Mustang#Edward Elric#Ed *hits blunt*: If I used your blood and extra materials to build like a kidney would that count as human transmutation?#Roy: Probably *hits blunt* let's try it#discovering these two have this in common *instantly* takes like 5 years off Hughes' lifespan XD

I would really like it if the hive mind could move away from the idea that the exception disproves the rule every time
there's such a thing as statistical distribution, the species is made up of unique individuals that nevertheless aggregate into identifiable trends, you can have something be true of most or virtually all people and nevertheless find exceptions. This runs the gamut from effective medical treatments, to the kinds of media people like, to gender roles and expressions, all kinds of things
This Procrustean effort to force everyone to conform to the standard and/or the delusion that the standard is just an axiomatic lie that can be tossed out on a whim are both ridiculous, you can have rules of thumb and broad heuristics that allow for all kinds of exceptions without being falsehoods
#I don't know why it's so hard to hold simultaneously that 1. boys and girls might have identifiable aggregate characteristics#and 2. there can be dramatic variation and exception#and also#the idea that a person is 'differently abled'#no man#I'm sorry#I'm not going to pretend there's no such thing as 'normal'#otherwise what is even illness#oh this person's kidneys work differently#you mean they've shut down?#my brain just works differently#my love if you're incapable of interacting with human beings that's a problem that's not just a harmless variation#some people have two arms and some people have one or none#yes maybe#but it's not unreasonable to expect to find the pair#it's not like it's a 33/33/33 split among one two and no arms#usually if a person doesn't have two arms something happened#I digress#AND I FAIL TO SEE how acknowledging that being able to walk is normal and healthy is incompatible with disability accommodations#put that ramp on the building#I just resent the pressure to lie#or to pretend I don't see what I see
