Takeaways:
Hugh and Linda were married in August on a Sunday
The wedding lasted three days and was attended by foreign dignitaries
In front of these dignitaries, Linda had to stand on her head and Hugh had to cartwheel down the aisle
We don’t know if that was before the exchange of vows or after
Did the tailors have to design the bride’s and groom’s outfits with those antics in mind?
The happy couple defied the superstition that it’s bad luck to toast with empty glasses and decided to make that the photo for the news article
Is it a mercy or an outrage that we don’t see a photo of the couple’s acrobatics?

I screenshotted this newspaper snippet at the beginning so I could actually read it, and… Penvellyn weddings sound very interesting.

How to Trigger Spooky Events in Curse of Blackmoor Manor (SPOILERS!!!)
The last time I played CUR, I missed just about all of the spooky events I saw when I played as a kid. I decided to try to track down what triggers any “event” that takes place in Curse of Blackmoor Manor. In a new playthrough, I managed to find all the spooky events. One big difference was unlocking puzzles after the game gave you the clues (and not solving them by memory or intuition). Further details below. I hope this helps anyone in their own playthroughs whether they are playing for themselves or showing the game to a newcomer.
Nancy hears chanting after the first night. No puzzles needed.
Get the nightmare sequence by completing the 13-ghost-hunt on Alan’s computer and looking at all the portraits in the Great Hall)
To hear Linda cry, open the East Hall passageway and complete the parrot door. Walk by her room to hear sobs (I did actually go back and forth between the door and Loulou for each word)
To see meat by Linda’s bedside, I asked Linda about the passageway and eventually got kicked out after asking if I could get her anything. I opened the West Hall passageway (after getting the coat of arms from Nigel). I also saw that Nancy had to see Linda’s hand and call Paliki to follow up. I also had just come back from unlocking the forge. Whether Nancy has to unlock the forge or just be in another location is unknown (kind of like how to get food from Tommy, I order in Nancy’s room then go to the conservatory. When I go directly back to my room, the food is ready).
Nonetheless, I found that the biggest difference in my last gameplay (with few spooky events) and my latest (with a whole collection of events) was accessing the forge ASAP. I think it has to do with the letters in the forge (in one of the journals) having clues for how to solve the rest of the game. In my bad playthrough with few spooky scenes I completely forgot that notebook was there and skipped right past it.
Scratches on Nancy’s door: Go to sleep after getting the Moon key (opening the box in Nancy’s room, typing in zodiac)
Creepy Dark figure: go to sleep after solving for the lightning key.
Nothing happened after the arrow key. Nothing after finding the time/clock key. Nothing after unlocking the mercury wand.
With the water puzzle, open the food before moving any triangles. There is something at the bottom of the well. After opening well, Jane Penvellyn gets a threatening note.
Get the Crazy Frog dream by going to Jane’s room and clicking on the chattering teeth 10 times to get an Easter egg. Read through the Frog book in Nancy’s room. Solve the Frog puzzle with the filled up well and go to sleep.
Mrs. Drake leaves charm directly after one conversation line with Hugh Penvellyn, so always check if there’s something he needs to talk about
Obtain a threatening note after obtaining the 6 keys, opening the pipes (correctly), and going directly to Nancy’s room.
Hope this guide serves as a help. I replayed puzzles and dialogue pieces half a dozen times to figure out as specifically as possible what triggered the different spooky events. Other people may have found different strategies, but I am satisfied that I found all these events on one playthrough (though with loops until I found the right combination of events).
I do have to thank HAFanForever and Arglefumph for their work in displaying these scenes in their videos. They were great reminders of events, and I discovered new ones (the Frog Easter Egg Dream). I also want to thank Arglefumph for his “Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor - Easter Egg” video which showed how to get the crazy frog dream.

Nancy Drew Mom rant:
Now that I’ve been thinking about it, I LOVE mom characters, we don’t get enough moms. We always have the dads (Carson, Big Island Mike, Ollie Randall, Marek, Judge Danforth, Gunnar Tonnisson, Hugh Penvellyn)
And we read journals from fathers: Julius McQuade (HE IS ISIS PAPA), Ezra Wickford, Meryl Humber, William Akers, and even Miles the Magnificent Memory Machine is a sort of living consciousness for Joy’s father!
It’s honestly ridiculous when I really think about it. I think part of this is because of the pressure to show that women can be more than mothers, but they can also be more AND MOTHERS. I understand avoiding trivializing a woman into just the motions of motherhood, but you are also making it worse by not exploring the lives and feelings and voices of all these women that have died. We don’t even hear from Camille in a story that focuses around HER GHOST! All we get is one letter about Jake’s grief at the loss of his wife, and a second hand account about how badly she wanted children and she couldn’t have them. How AMAZING would it have been to hear that in her words, telling HER story!
I never realized how much Her Interactive has avoided telling the mother’s story so much until now. The one mother we have is Clara (other than step-mom Linda), and yes, she’s done terrible things and treats her daughter like a commodity, but her character is FLESHED OUT. She has bones and she does bad because she TRULY believes it to be the best thing. We don’t love her, but we KNOW HER, and we want her to be better because we see her humanity!
I want that SO BADLY for the other mothers.

A No Proof Nancy Age based on Timeline Idea
What the title states.
Look, we’ve all been wondering Nancy’s age, and this is just a fun way to guess how old she is in each game based on nothing but context and creativity. There maybe some typos and grammar issues because I wrote this super fast.
The first 4 games occur when Nancy is in highschool. She has a history of solving crimes since she was young and her aunt just turns to her for help which sets off a career.
SCK/SCK Remastered: Nancy is in 9th grade. Younger than the suspects which fits her general confusion about how highschool works and the ease with how she enters the school.
STFD: Nancy is in 10th grade. Most likely on spring or summer break. This puts her at a much younger age than the cast and makes sense why they treat her as a junior. It also makes Rick Arlen’s behaviour very disgusting.
MHM: Nancy is in grade 11. Almost an adult, but still dependent on others. It also makes sense why Hannah would chuck a teenager for summer odd jobs help, over an older Nancy. Rose, Abbey, and Louis’ behaviours as dismissive, and kind of mean, makes sense because they see Nancy as a young kid. It also makes Charlie’s friendliness towards her make sense in comparison to other characters.
TRT: Nancy is in grade 12, winter break. Same situation as MHM.
FIN: Now things change! Nancy specifically mentions Maya as a friend, but Maya is a university student! And what university student would remain close friends with a highscholer? The difference in responsibilities naturally puts a distance, UNLESS, Nancy is also a university/college student! Nancy has joined as a history major due to inspiration from Hotchkiss, and often writes articles for Maya.
SSH: Nancy is a second year history major and is doing an internship at a museum to get curatorial and archives experience.
DOG: Nancy is a third year student and is on fall break/long weekend holiday. Her discover of a speakeasy fits into her history major focus.
CAR: Nancy is a 4th year student and discovers a historical artifact that got stolen. Her interest in history and detective work bridges together, but she’s hasn’t decided what path to take. Should she be a historian, archivist, curator, or detective?
DDI: Nancy is a recent grad and is exhasuted and overworked. To celebrate her graduation she goes for a whale watching tour rest vacation thing and ends up solving another mystery with the aid of some local history.
SHA: Nancy is a fully fledged historian and is looking for a job. She uses the past to figure out the present, and really cements the idea of combining history and mystery as a career.
CUR: Nancy starts a career as a historical detective, but she’s not a licensed detective and is burnt out to start another career. So she advertises herself as a historian but everyone in River Heights know her as a detective and often reach out to her. CUR becomes Nancy’s first real work work.
CLK: Backstory of why Nancy is interested in history. some odd fascination with the 30s.
TRN: Nancy’s reputation is spread around by Hugh Penvellyn and reaches the ears of Lori.
DAN: The news of TRN and Lori makes Nancy well known internationally and more people reach out to her. As always, Nancy’s penchant for history makes solving the mystery easy.
CRE: Nancy has a career existential crises. Maybe she wasn’t getting enough work, or people were commenting that she seems unmotivated. She’s also not sure what she likes and decides to go towards science. Maybe go back and learn to be a forensic detective.
ICE: Nancy continues to see if forensic detective would be a career for her, yet history keeps calling her name.
CRY: Nancy takes a vacation and Ned requests Nancy to check on Henry. Using history and archival knowledge, Nancy solves a case.
VEN: The Italian police reach out to Nancy based on her success with CUR, TRN, and DAN to solve an art smuggling operation. Nancy is now confident that History is what she was always meant to focus on, and forensics science is good information to have.
HAU: Nancy gets invited to her first wedding and realizes people around her are growing up and moving onto different stages of their lives. Yet again, she uses history to solve a mystery.
RAN: Nancy goes on vacation and again uses history to uncover a kidnapping mystery.
WAV: Again, Nancy gets an opportunity to work professionally due to her reputation. But she finds it harder to fit in and relate to the girls because she’s much older now.
TOT: Nancy is in her mid 20′s and is solving a professional mystery. Her experiences and knowledge in science helps her with the case. She also finds herself surrounded by people who are all having career existential crises of some kind. But Nancy grows from the experience and becomes determined to make her dream career work out.
SAW: Nancy gets a vacation and solves a mystery, but this time she’s super confident in herself.
CUR: Nancy’s reputation land her an AWESOME opportunity.
ASH: Well.... someone tries to tarnish Nancy’s reputation...
TMB: Needing a break from River Heights and to give people time to move on from the scandals the came out, Nancy reaches to a former manager for a reference to work on a dig sight. Her history and archaeology degree come in handy!
DED: Nancy gets another awesome professional opportunity.
GTH: Acquaintance asks for assistance and Nancy’s on the case!
SPY: Nancy has a guts to face her own past with all the experience she’s gained.
MED: Nancy decides she needs to up her physical fitness to be ready to take down anyone after her experiences in SPY.
LIE: Museums are contacting each other left and right about this amazing history detective who can stop smugglers!
SEA: Dagny hires Nancy but tricks her into what type of mystery she’s solving.
MID: Ignoring the MESS of MID, it pretty much follows the whole using the past to solve a present mystery.

NO KEY WITHOUT TOIL • a nancy drew fic concept (tw blood / horror clips in trailer)
decades have passed since nancy (amy adams) first visited blackmoor manor. after a divorce and the passing of her father, nancy finds herself in london accompanying maya nguyen to brady armstrong’s metamorphosis from cable tv to theatre.
nancy is all too happy to duck out of the play and take a call from hugh penvellyn, who is desperate to uncover the whereabouts of an adult jane (mia washikowska) and five other missing girls - one being mei parry, who travelled to london to meet an online friend with a passion for game design.
nancy feels just as washed up as brady armstrong. she’s been a nickerson for years now - she wouldn’t know nancy drew if that long-lost legend shook her by the shoulders and screamed.
perhaps the halls of blackmoor can guide her back to herself, whoever that might be.
if frank hardy wants to help light the path down those gloomy, twisted moors, who is she to stop him and joe? but the addition of deirdre, the married ghost hunting duo jessalyn thorton and henry bolet, plus dylan carter, who is now giving spook-ridden tours of blackmoor? well, let’s just say that rediscovering nancy drew might be tricker than expected.
my actions ensure that my name will endure, right?

The Bluebeard Room, Nancy Drew Mystery Stories #77 (1985)
Simon & Schuster took over the publishing rights to the Nancy Drew titles in 1985, and maintained the continuity of the Mystery Stories but introduced a new, more adult style to the stories. The first S&S published title was The Bluebeard Room. The new style became the template for a spin off “sister” series called The Nancy Drew Files, aimed at an older female teenage audience and contained more current themes, including drugs smuggling and murder as opposed to the traditional Nancy fare of lost heiresses, hauntings, art thefts and kidnappings. Nancy’s independence was also enhanced by a split with boyfriend Nick Nickerson, enabling Nancy to explore new romantic adventures and avoid the “damsel in distress” trope, being continually rescued by Nick from danger in the final reel.
The action of The Bluebeard Room is set in Cornwall, England, where one of Nancy’s old friends, Lisa, appears to be plagued by a coven of witches following her marriage to an English nobleman, Hugh Penvellyn. Her friend’s mother, Mrs Harwood, asks Nancy to investigate her daughter’s increasingly strange behaviour, mistrusting her son-in-law who she fears maybe poisoning Lisa to get his hands on her fortune. Nancy travels to Cornwall with Bess and George and soon finds herself tangling not only with witches, but cocaine smugglers too. The pagan coven turns out to a front for drugs dealing and Lisa has been being fed an elixir by one of the baddies to encourage her to sleepwalk on the dangerous battlements of the ancestral house as a warning to Hugh. Nancy has a couple of romantic encounters with an up and coming American rock star and with a local reporter, but manages to solve the mystery while keeping her reputation intact.
The story falls a little uncomfortably between teen romance and girls’ adventure and whereas the exploration of Cornish pagan survivals is good fun, the 1980s cultural references date the book more than the classic Nancy tales and the new edgy feel doesn’t altogether work. The style was developed more successfully as the Files series took off, and the new approach certainly rejuvenated the popularity of the girl detective.

I know Nigel says at one point he could do better than Ethel as Jane's tutor. Maybe he makes several pitches to Linda while Hugh is away, telling her what he would be teaching Jane instead, including local history like the Elinor Penvellyn and the Beast of Blackmoor. Linda asks for more specifics from Nigel, and knows enough that by the time she discovers the curse, she's heard there's a "precedent" for this transformation she's experiencing.
Hugh says he's forbidden Ethel to so much as mention the beast to Jane (even though we know she does). But that means Jane isn't supposed to know about it and she can't SAY as much to Linda to plant the idea in her head about Elinor and the beast. She has to use a book on werewolves and plant a copy of the passageway's curse in Linda's room to start the headgames. If Nigel was supplementing some of that lycanthropic knowledge to Linda with specifics about the family's history, it makes him a threat to her health and more of a suspect.
How could Nigel be better implemented as a suspect? Mrs Petrov says he was up to something and we find out pretty early it's just the book he was hired to write is supposed to be scandalous. I feel like he hasn't even spoken to Linda before. Any ideas on how he could be a better implied threat to Linda's health?
Hm. Good question. Although I have noticed he's a bit underutilized as a suspect, I never really thought about what I would change if I were to write him. Maybe he'd be more of a source of paranoia for her, like he played more of a role in suggesting to Linda that she was turning into the Beast of Blackmoor, what with him being the sensationalist historian.
It also might be fun to have him also chasing the treasure and have a false reveal halfway through, kind of like Jacques in TRT.

Conversation
Linda: My hands are shaking. Mrs. Drake, I need some Pirin tablets.
Hugh: What are you taking?
Linda: Nothing!
Mrs. Drake: Okay but just two. No more. So don’t ask me.
Linda: Thank you.
-later-
Hugh: What are you doing giving her drugs?! What the hell are Pirin tablets?
Mrs. Drake: It’s Aspirin with the A and S scraped off.
Hugh: My god, what a brilliant idea!
